SEIU Members Share Information State correctional officers and SEANC staff hosted fellow SEIU members from the Michigan Corrections Organization (MCO) SEIU Local 526M at the SEANC Central Office on Thursday. MCO members are investigating the move to 12-hour shifts in Michigan prisons and came to discuss how North Carolina made that same transition.

Awards Deadline Draws Near Do you have an outstanding district or district chairperson? How about a district member or someone whose service and dedication sets him or her far above the rest? If so, submit nominations for a SEANC award! The Awards Committee is accepting nominations until July 23 and judging will be in early August. All awards will be given out during the annual convention.

State Employees Association of North Carolina The SEANC Scoop Good News in the General Assembly! On Wednesday the Senate unanimously overrode SB 781, a bill that would have made it possible for the State Personnel Commission to overturn a judge’s decision on state employees’ personnel cases. The bill will head to the House next, which is scheduled to convene Monday. SEANC will keep you posted on the results.

SB 781, allows a judge, not a state agency, to have the final determination when a state worker and state agency have a dispute. The governor vetoed SB 781 and the Senate unanimously overrode the veto last week. Call your House member today and ask them to override the veto of SB 781.

Exclusive Budget Briefing The Raleigh budget briefing will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the SEANC Central Office. SEANC’s Eastern Region Budget Briefing was Tuesday in Greenville. Executive Director Dana Cope spoke with more than 50 members about SEANC’s legislative victories, governance changes to the State Health Plan, full funding of the retirement system and more. SHP - Follow-Up Enrollment Due to changes made to the SHP during the legislative session, a follow-up enrollment is underway until July 29. During this enrollment period, you have the opportunity to change your plan coverage and add or drop eligible dependents. If you are happy with the plan you signed up for during the initial enrollment period in May and June, no action is necessary. For more, read this article.

Convention Memorial Service Each year at the annual SEANC convention, a memorial service is held to remember those members who are no longer with us. If you know a SEANC member that you would like to honor who has passed away since September 2010, please send an email to Daniel Pate at dpate@seanc.org by Aug. 19. Please include a photograph of the member and the SEANC remembrance presentation form.

State Employees Association of North Carolina The SEANC Scoop July 29, 2011 Legislative Update The House trumped the governor’s veto of Senate Bill 781 on Tuesday following the Senate’s example from July 13. The bill allows a judge, instead of a state agency, to have the final determination when a state worker and state agency have a dispute.
