Legislative Update
Cowell Hopes to Gamble with State Employees' Retirement Security With the General Assembly session nearing completion, State Treasurer Janet Cowell is pulling out all the stops in her attempt to gamble even more of state employees’ retirement on risky investments to please out-of-state money managers. SEANC is strongly opposed to this effort, and vows to fight off her attempt to pass SB 558, which would allow her to risk 40 percent of the retirement fund on hedge funds, real estate and credit markets. Also this week, legislators signaled that the end of the session is nearing and that a tax reform package and state budget deal could be reached as early as Monday. Read all about it in this week’s Legislative Update.

Upcoming Events Monday Night! Come out to the General Assembly to help SEANC
SEANC’s opposition to State Treasurer Janet Cowell’s attempt to garner more control over the retirement plan’s investments was mentioned in the News & Observer. Cowell took the fight to a national audience, pitching her argument in an interview on CNBC, which is fitting since the plan would mostly benefit out-of-state money managers at the expense of state employees’ retirement security.
