State Employees Association of North Carolina The SEANC Scoop June 7, 2013 Senate Considering Gov. McCrory's Plan to Rewrite the State Personnel Act

The N.C. Senate is considering a bill to rewrite the State Personnel Act, putting members in jeopardy of losing their jobs to political patronage. Members plan to be out in full force at the General Assembly on Monday to show senators just how important this issue is to state employment. Also, the N.C. House subcommittees are working today on the state budget. Read all about it in this week’s Legislative Update.

Take Action: Your Job is at Stake

The time has come for SEANC members to stand up to Gov. Pat McCrory’s attempt to politicize state employment. SEANC members should come to the General Assembly at 5:30 p.m. on Monday night to lobby the N.C. Senate to vote against HB 834, which would rewrite many of the protections of the State Personnel Act. State Employees Association of North Carolina The SEANC Scoop June 14, 2013 House Passes Budget and the General Assembly's Money Dance Continues

The N.C. House passed its $20.57 billion budget bill this week. The proposal includes no pay raises but provides active employees with five bonus days of vacation. The House and Senate will now work out a compromise budget proposal to send to Gov. Pat McCrory. Also this week, House Speaker Thom Tillis hinted at lifting the ban on privatization of maintenance at the state’s prisons, and SEANC members turned out in full force to discuss harmful changes to the State Personnel Act with senators. SEANC Awards 41 Scholarships

The SEANC Scholarship Foundation awarded 41 statewide scholarships this year totaling $33,500. Applications are submitted from the district level to the statewide board, who judged 97 applicants this year. Thanks to all who applied, and congratulations to the winners!

Cope Speaks on Immigration Reform

At a press conference Thursday, SEANC Executive Director Dana Cope joined the Partnership for a New American Economy to announce SEANC’s support for national comprehensive immigration reform. Citing a recent poll that demonstrates overwhelming bipartisan support for reforming the nation’s immigration system, Cope said that “we must provide a sustainable framework of laws that allows businesses to be successful while genuinely respecting the rights of all workers.” Watch Cope’s speech here.

State Employees Association of North Carolina The SEANC Scoop June 21, 2013 SEANC Stands Up for Autistic Children SEANC lobbyists stood up for autistic children in the debate over HB 498, which would require the State Health Plan and some other health insurance plans to provide coverage for autism spectrum disorders. The State Treasurer opposes the bill. Also, dental hygienists in the Department of Health and Human Services’ Oral Health Division took the day off to educate senators about the preventative dental services that they provide in high-risk schools. The House Budget kept these services, while the Senate did not. SEANC lobbyists continued to advocate for state employees on the the State Personnel Act that may be heard next week. Topics discussed included the federal Social Security debate and how the two tax reform efforts in the state legislature will impact retirees.
