Metro Must Be Delivered “We cannot be parochial” - Ryan The eagerly awaited Metro North project is quite simply the single most important project in the history of the North County. It is widely regarded as being crucial for the economic recovery of an area. The County Leader decided to test the resolve of the local representatives on this vital issue. Fine Gael’s James Reilly was very positive and upbeat about the merits of Metro North. He said, “Fine Gael is absolutely supportive of the project. It is about connecting 40,000

By Patrick Finnegan The recent comment by people, growing to 100,000 in Swords and beyond to the city. For once in our lives, can we give the people of the North County a break and put this infrastructure in place. The cost benefit analysis is 2:1. In other words, every euro spent will yield two euro. This is an investment that will pay dividends and will make us competitive for decades to come. With so much unemployment, now is a great time to go about it,” he said.

Recently, Dublin Ladies created history when they won the All-Ireland Football Championship for the first time with a wonderful victory over Tyrone. One of the stars of this famous victory was local Swords girl, Amy McGuinness, who brought the Brendan Martin Cup to Gael Scoil Bhrian Boroimhe in Swords last week. the Labour Party leader that he would drop the Metro North project should Labour come to power, has caused consternation in the North County. Senator Brendan Ryan, the only prospective North Dublin Labour party candidate at the next general election was not as bullish about the project as his would be political rivals in the area. Ryan said, “Every project in the Development Plan will have to be examined to see if they are viable. I have always been supportive of Metro North, but we are in a new space now and we need to look at all projects. If Labour comes to power at the next General Election and I am lucky enough to be chosen as a TD by the electorate, I will fight to ensure that Metro North gets a fair hearing in any Cost Benefit Analysis to see if it stacks up,” he said. Nothing has been signed yet. We are all aware of the benefits of Metro North, but we cannot be parochial. Labour continues to support Metro North, but it must be looked

Trad For Trocaire In Malahide The Junior band members of the Malahide and

Kinsealy branches of Comhaltas played a lively seisiún in St

Sylvester’s GAA club recently. The seisiún and fundraising event was organised in conjunction with Gibneys of Malahide in support of Trad for Trocaíre, a national fundraising initiative that was launched for the first time last month. Malahide and Kinsealy’s collaborative seisiúns always prove to be a great success, allowing the students to showcase their talents and build confidence by playing to a live audience. On this occasion the seisiún had the dual purpose of raising funds for Trocaíre’s Hunger campaign. Band practice is held every Wednesday in St Nicolas of Myra School in Kinsealy in conjunction with

Young Rush Piper Is All Ireland Champion There were major celebrations recently when Cillian Harford, a young piper from St. Maur’s Pipe Band Rush, took the top prize at the All Ireland Piping and Drumming Solo Championships. The competition was held in Belfast last month and is a big highlight in the competition calendar with pipers and drummers from all over Ireland taking part. Two other members of St. Maur’s also competed, Darragh Bollard and Gareth Carrick and both gave very good performances and finished well up in their respective grades. Cillian competed in the under 14 championship and gave an outstanding performance to win first prize and take the prestigious All Ireland Piping title. This is a fantastic achievement for Cillian as this is his first year competing at this level and is a testament to his father, Noel Harford, Pipe Major and Piping Tutor for St. Maur’s Pipe Band.

break from its owner and attacked the unsuspecting birds, who flew off over the fence that runs parallel to the train tracks. A witness, who prefers to remain anonymous, contacted the County Leader with their version of events; “it happened at around midday, the dog-walker had their dog off its lead and it went for the birds. One disappeared into the briars, while the others flew up and over the fence beside the railway tracks. It was awful, you could hear them screaming and whining while they were caught. I went to get help, and when we came back they had moved off. We feared they were caught behind the fence, so we had to cut a small hole in it in the hopes they would come back”. Lucky enough, Brewster and his pals have returned in good form, and continue to reside at the side of the busy road they have made their home.

Swords Girl Fosters Abandoned Fawn Swords girl, Danielle Fogarty is certainly unique in her neighbourhood, as she is rearing a fawn in her backyard. Animal lover, Danielle, who is a final year student of Animal Science at UCD, happened upon the abandoned fawn as part of a research day conducted by the college. Danielle explained to the County Leader, “For the past two years, I have gone out with a group from UCD in June to the Phoenix Park, as this is the time when the deer go to fawn. We go with nets to capture fawn in order to take samples of hair and take measurements as part of research, before releasing them back to the wild. On 18th June on our first run of the morning, we happened upon a deer who had just given birth. The mother immediately abandoned the fawn, due to human contact and never returned. The other mothers would not let a strange fawn suckle them, so we knew that the baby fawn, which I

By Patrick Finnegan called Bee Bee was in trouble,” she said. She began to suckle at Danielle’s trousers. Danielle then consulted the Park Ranger who had accompanied them on the trip and he, along with the college authorities,

“My studies at college included animal husbandry, so it was now time to put my theory into real practice. I did some research and came up with my own milk solution from a local farmer, Padraig Ó

gave Danielle permission to take the baby fawn home to Castlegrange estate in Swords to rear her. It is thought highly unlikely that Bee Bee would have survived without Danielle’s timely intervention.

Scanaill. I told him that Bee Bee had not been fed yet and needed some Colostrum, which is a rich first milk that contains essential anti bodies. Padraig gave me a bottle of frozen Colostrum. I fed her this

for the first two days and then on to normal cow’s milk with eggs and glucose as well as a copper supplement.” Warm hearted Danielle kept Bee Bee at her home for the first three weeks. Bee Bee slept all day long during this period. Then when the three weeks had elapsed, she became very active. Danielle went on to explain, “My boyfriend has land in Co. Meath and we reckoned that Bee Bee would be better there with the extra space. We then decided to buy a goat to provide company for her. We called him Tom and they are the best of friends. Both goats and deer are herd animals and crave for company. Danielle and her boyfriend bring Bee Bee and Tom on walks in the Meath countryside and Tom particularly cleans up the shrubs on the roadside. Both animals are very relaxed and are not stressed in the least. Danielle hopes to keep Bee Bee for as long as possible, as she has bonded really well with her new foster mother. “I hope to pursue a career in Veterinary eventually and this has been a terrific experience for me,” she said.

Malahide Marina Gets A Makeover Malahide marina received a good tidying up when a group of citizens got themselves active to help out their local community.

By Jonathan Adams On Saturday week last, 9th October, members of the Junior Chamber International Ireland (JCI) got stuck into this picturesque part of Malahide, as part of Active Citizenship Week. President of the chapter, Brian Smyth told the County Leader what the week is about: “Leadership, motivation, acquiring skills and learning by doing, so it’s about getting out there and getting active,” he said. Active Citizenship Week tries to get people across the country to help their communities in many ways like visiting elderly people, registering to vote, painting schools, giving blood, planting flowers, donating books or tidying the local area. Calling on young people in Malahide and the North County to join in and volunteer their time, Mr. Smyth said, “We’d like them to get out and get active in their

local area, whether it is with a charity or a sports club there are loads of ways to get involved.” JCI’s call comes at a time when there are thousands of young people unemployed and faced with little or no job prospects. According to Smyth, JCI could be a new beginning for young people in this position: “If you get out there and you build up your network and develop new skills, who knows, it could be a potential new career path,” he said. The JCI Fingal chapter meets on the second Tuesday of every month in the Grand Hotel Malahide.

Well Known Author Visits Skerries School

The Skerries Community College was an even livelier scene than normal on Thursday 7th October, as celebrated children’s author Aubrey Flegg paid a visit. The writer gave a thoroughly captivating talk to numerous student groups, who clung to his every word. Flegg’s books include “Katie’s War”, “The Cinnamon Tree” and his current work, “Louise Trilogy”. The first book of this trilogy, “Wings over Delft”, won the Bisto Book of the Year 2003/4, Ireland’s most prestigious children’s literature prize and won the Reading Association of Ireland award in 2005. Flegg spoke of his time working as a geologist for the Geological Survey of Ireland in Africa, and of a research trip he undertook to Angola. As well as reading passages from some of his books, he took the time to speak of his experience with the writing process; “It is always important to choose a good companion, in school, in work and in life. It is the same when you write a character. I find writing to be an adventure. You always think you know where you’re going, but you’ll always find surprises along the way!”

concerning the refusal of the Department of Transport to refuse a licence for a shuttle bus service. Malahide Shuttle has been planned as a service for Malahide residents and has been organised in response to suggestions, to help commuters reach the Railway Station, to avoid traffic congestion, to ease parking problems and to save people having to drive their cars around the village. Michael Gill, Vice Chairman of Malahide Community Forum told the County Leader, “The licence was turned down because it

was judged that Malahide already had an adequate service in the existing Dublin Bus service. This is not the case, as the existing service is far from adequate. It stated that there was an adequate bus and train service, but the Shuttle service was designed to bring people to the train station. The Department of Transport refused our licence application in April and then refused the appeal in August despite being sent nearly 600 messages of support for the Shuttle from Malahide residents." He continued, "The reasons given were that existing services are adequate; possibly Dublin

Malahide Water Problems And Solutions Many Malahide residents have experienced more water problems in recent weeks. Part of the problem is a lack of water reserves in the area. The local Chamber of Commerce has been in touch with the County Council and has been updated on their plans, which are outlined Bus was being protected from perceived competition, though the Malahide Shuttle would hardly threaten Dublin Bus, being only a local service. But all is not lost. Responsibility for bus licensing is now moving to the new National Transport Authority. Their draft Guidelines look somewhat more ‘open’, although there are one or two areas where we were concerned about what was called ‘adverse competition’ and have been lobbying to get them modified. We are hopeful that when the final Guidelines emerge in November they will allow us to apply for, and obtain, a licence. But the earliest we can hope to have the Shuttle running is now sometime in early 2011," he concluded.

The condition begins when the digestive system is no longer able to process particular foods as they pass down the digestive tract. The end result is a build-up of many poisonous intestinal toxins. This toxic intestinal mix eventually escapes into the bloodstream. These toxins are then carried through the body where they cause infection and inflammation in other organs and body systems. The objective of the test is to find the particular foods, which are causing this toxic state.

A new reservoir is required in order to meet increasing water demands and to ensure that adequate contingence storage is provided. Funding is included in the Water Services Investment Programme 2010 to 2012 for the new reservoir, which will provide an additional 2.300 m3 of

Fears Of Monster Sewage Plant In Portrane

utor road in Donabate are “part of a renewed attempt to build a monster sewage plant on the peninsula,” the area’s community council has said. The County Council has applied to An Bord Pleanála for permission for the road that it intends to build, linking the Portrane road to the Hearse road by crossing Ballymastone and Corballis. The council says the road is needed to facilitate housing developments and to deal with future congestion. But in a document submitted as part of the application, the local authority said the road, three quarters of which will be dual carriageway, will also facilitate traffic for a new wastewater treatment plant. In its application, the county council states, “the road will open up development lands at Ballymastone and Corballis and will facilitate traffic from the proposed Portrane wastewater treatment plant.” Chairman of Donabate Portrane Community Council, Gareth Lee said expressions like “proposed Portrane wastewater treatment plant” could only mean one thing – the Council is attempting again to dump a monster plant on the area. Lee said, “it was opposed to

the new road as it is being built to open up the area to excessive housing development, and is a “Trojan horse” attempt to build a monster sewage plant in the area.” A small sewage plant to service Portrane, Donabate, Rush and Lusk is currently being built in Portrane. As this is being built it could not be referred to as a proposed sewage plant, meaning the county council still sees the area as a location for a monster plant. It now appears that the County Council is trying again to push the proposed monster sewage plant on Portrane. If that is the case it will be opposed all the way,” said Lee. He added that the 4 km distributor road would facilitate unsustainable housing development on the peninsula. Some 3km of the proposed road would be dual carriageway. The community council, along with pressure group Fairshare, has so far thwarted attempts going back to 2005 to build a giant sewage plant in Portrane severing the east coast of Ireland. Donabate Portrane Community Council said the proposed road was excessive in scale, and would lead to unsustainable housing development at a time when the country had 2,700 ghost estates.

Grants For Local Senior Citizens

Deputy Michael Kennedy has welcomed the awarding of more than €4,000 to Malahide Active Retirement Association under the new Seniors Alert Scheme. “I’m delighted to confirm Minister Pat Carey has sanctioned a grant of €4,140 for Malahide Active Retirement Association to fund equipment which will enable older people to continue to live securely in their homes. The equipment includes personal monitored alert systems Michael Kennedy TD for security and in-home fire alerts. This is another sign that the Government is committed to ensuring older people can have independence and peace of mind in their own homes and communities,” he said. “The Minister also recently approved almost €700 for Rush Senior Citizens under the Scheme of Community Support for Older People which has now been replaced by the Seniors Alert Scheme.”

Open Space Renewal Project In Lusk A family field day was held in Lusk last Saturday week, 9th October, as part of the programme to bring wildflower and trees

By Liam Keegan to the open field area in Orlynn Park. The programme, launched by the County Council, aims to turn areas of the open field into meadow and this was kicked off with the planting of thousands of daffodils by residents last Saturday afternoon. County Mayor, Ken Farrell said the plan of this pilot scheme was to introduce paths through a meadow and to renew these open spaces, while still preserving large sections of the field for community sports. The family field day provided kids of the area with an abundance of activities, such as face painting, a bouncy castle, balloon modelling, human table-football, ice

cream, topped off by a magic show performed by Mr Zhivago. Park Superintendent, Tom Hussey said that the target of the programme is to bring to the area “more trees, more wildflowers and less places for anti-social behaviour.” “There will a five to ten year turnabout on this project; this is not a quick fix,” Hussey explained. “We assessed the needs of the residents and we have planned the area to suit their needs.” As well as the planting of thousands of daffodils, Hussey hopes to plant large canopy trees. “We hope to eventually have some canopy trees such as oak, but for now, the residents will see spring colours and hopefully some in summer too,” he added. Orlynn Park resident, Tom Kilmurray expressed his delight at the programme. “I think it’s a very good idea, as most of the area is just green grass, we can now look forward to some beautiful colours in spring,” he said.

Report Recommends Greater Facilities For Balbriggan Youth A recent report on the North County’s mushrooming youth population has recommended

By Bob McKenzie that the youth of today need to be engaged more. The report compiled by The Balbriggan Youth Wellbeing Group, made several key recommendations after consulting with 32 bodies who are the experts at dealing with people who are going through one of the most difficult and confusing parts of life. The report recommended that a youth orientated website would be beneficial, as would a drop in centre and a dedicated Youth Counselling service. The report focused on the mental health of

teenagers and called for an expansion of youth services to cater for a sector which is seeing many falling through the cracks of the system rather than getting the professional help they need. The proposed website would see the teenagers linking up with social networking sites to promote a positive mental health message. The report entitled “A Voice Being Heard” echoed it’s title throughout as it called for the expansion of Foroige, recruiting more youth workers. They also suggested the setting up of various teen amenities such as a skate park or a pool, where young people could have their say in the running of the venues. “A joined

The report was warmly welcomed by several of the North County’s elected representatives, with some turning up to lend their support. Councillor Ciaran Byrne (LAB), told the County Leader, “ I believe that the report raises significant issues and feel that it

The objective of the charity is to provide a hospice care within this township, effectively a place of peace and sanctuary where mothers in the last couple of weeks in their lives can take refuge, and continue to have their babies with them to the end. This is an impossibility, unless there is a hospice within the township itself. Siobhan Brady, one of the organisers told the County Leader, “We, in Portmarnock Community

could be a template for the future. As part of an ongoing strategy, I would fully support the setting up of the recommended services in the Balbriggan area and should they prove successful, they could be rolled out across the North County,” he said.

Local Rotary Club Aids Pakistan Flood Victims The recent Pakistani flood disaster has touched the hearts of most people in the North County. In response to this challenge, the Dublin Fingal Rotary Club carried out a collection in the Swords area, on October 1st and 2nd. The collection was on behalf of ShelterBox, which is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide. The collection raised sufficient funds for the dispatch of five boxes to the flood area, which will provide housing and support for 50 people.

The aim of the organisation is to respond instantly to natural and man made disasters by delivering boxes of aid to those who are most in need. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. Shelterbox was founded by Tom Henderson, a Rotarian and former Royal Navy search and rescue diver. He saw that the aid response to most disasters was in the form of food and medicine to help people survive the immediate

aftermath. ShelterBox was launched to fill that void. When news came of the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004, ShelterBox faced its most significant challenge, one that would change its course forever. Donations and volunteers poured in and ShelterBox was able to ramp up its operations, ultimately sending out more than 22,000 boxes. This year, Rotary and ShelterBox have been major contributors of aid in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake and the big current focus is on the areas of Pakistan devastated by flooding. Dublin Fingal Rotary Club greatly appreciates the generosity of the people of Swords and also wishes to extend its thanks to local businesses who

Successful First Season For Corduff Allotments At last after some planning permission delays, Corduff allotments, near Lusk finally got up and running. They managed to get the parking and rabbit fencing done in March. Fortunately, the plots were ploughed and rotovated before the weather turned wet

Home Energy Information Meeting In Skerries Skerries residents were given the opportunity to become “energy-smart”, at a Home Energy Saving Information Meeting held in the Little Theatre on October 7th. The information evening, organised by Codema with the

By Rob O’Hanrahan support of Sustainable Skerries was well attended, with the organisers estimating an attendance of approximately fifty residents. Codema is a not-for-profit sustainable energy agency which acts as energy adviser to the four local authorities in Dublin. The idea is for homeowners to group together in Energy Smart Communities. By doing this, it is not only cheaper for the household, but more environmentally sound. There are currently two government grants available to private homeowners through Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI): the Home Energy Saving scheme and the Greener Homes scheme. The Energy Smart Community allows homeowners to make the most of these grants through a community 'cluster' formation. The work, covered under the two grant schemes above, includes the installation of insulation, boiler servicing, heating controls, solar panels, wood-chip boilers and many more. Suzanne Morgan, a Codema representative, explained to the County Leader that the idea of the meeting was to “get interested people together and to encourage them to take part in our home energy survey. From here, we can look to combine the work of the interested parties. A panel of contractors are thoroughly vetted, to ensure they are of a certain standard, before we choose the best bid on the work. As a non-profit organisation, we are totally independent of all contractors”. The meeting was a great success, with many residents expressing an interest in the scheme and signing up for the energy survey.

changes to the weather, landscape and amount of daylight in our day. Looking after your skin in this weather is so important and protecting it may not occur to many of us but it’s so important. The weather can dry out your skin and give it dry patches or red patches. It may not be so easy to apply make-up correctly if your skin is not smooth and supple. There are lots of ways to put moisture into your skin without it having to cost the earth, helping both your skin and pocket. Try this basic at home facial that works on oily, dry and combination skin. This will take around 25-30 minutes and can be done at your leisure or maybe plan a girlie night in. Have the girls around and try swapping beauty secrets and each other’s little tips.

circular motion on your face. Concentrate on the areas around your nose and forehead or if you have combo skin, work harder on the areas that tend to be greasy. Rinse your face well since exfoliating scrubs tend to be drying. You’re now ready for the mask. This home-made face mask is moisturising and soothing and only takes two minutes to prepare. You will need two egg whites, separated from the yolk and placed in a bowl, two tablespoons of plain yogurt . Mix them up and apply to face. Leave on face for a few minutes then rinse face in warm water, followed by a warm washcloth. Follow with your regular moisturiser and your skin should feel very comfortable.

Let’s Face It

Sleeping on your back will prevent many wrinkles and breakouts on your face, and even wrinkles in your cleavage area. Wearing less make-up makes you look younger and lets your skin breath. Emphasising your eyes and cheeks with natural colours that brighten up your face and give you a healthy glow. Vitamins and minerals are needed for health and beauty so be sure to have a look at what’s on offer and choose the right one for you. When shaving, don’t stretch the skin or you could cause ingrown hairs by shaving hair off slightly under the skin. Drink plenty of water and get eight hours of sleep every day as this is a real treat for the skin. Try to have lunches and clothes prepared for morning, so you’re not getting stressed out and forgetting to look after your skin so your skin can also stay calm. Tighten bra straps as they stretch out, or buy a new bra when they can’t tighten any further, to keep the bosom looking young and perky. After washing your face, rinse in cold water. Fair skinned people should use cool instead of cold, to close the pores and tighten the facial muscles. Good posture can make you look much slimmer. Wearing a low heel will give you better posture than wearing flat shoes. This Autumn keep well and walk tall and remember you’re beautiful inside and out.

First cleanse the skin, you’ll want to wash the face to remove any grime or dirt. Exfoliate, using your fingers, rub a gentle exfoliating scrub in a

Swords Man In Final Of Mr Gay Ireland Twenty two year old Omar Hebib from Swords is one of the lucky men who will be competing for the crown of Mr Gay

By Leslie Murphy Ireland this October 24th. Omar is in his final year studying for a Business degree and working part time as a waiter in a local Portmarnock restaurant. The young man is a fairly social person and enjoys spending time with others, helping and having fun. Founded in 2005 the event is organised by the Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. Mr Gay Ireland has become more than a beauty contest and has become a nationwide community civic and social project designed to overcome negative stereotypes of gay people and to encourage a civic and social action for HIV/AIDS amongst the contestants and their friends. Mr Gay Ireland has donated almost €50,000 to charitable causes including Round Tower Housing Association (HIV/AIDS), St. James’s Hospital Foundation (HIV/AIDS), BelongTo Youth Development, the KAL case and GCN. Omar told the County Leader, “I have to say I’m really excited for the Mr Gay Ireland final this Sunday. I can’t wait to meet the other contestants and

have a bit of fun. It’s not something I would have expected, but I’m over the moon to be involved. I originally got involved when I’d heard from previous contestants that it is a lot of fun to take part, and I’m always up for something new and different. I think it’s so important to try and do your bit for others whenever possible and I’m delighted that I get to represent Swords and do my bit to raise money for St. James Hospital, New Fill Service for HIV/AIDS patients. I think it’s a fantastic project and I’m really excited to be helping out.” The fundraising is important too and Omar has decided to team up with Candy, a gay club night being run in The Slaughtered Lamb, Swords on a Friday nights. Candy are hosting a Graffiti Party this Friday October 22nd including raffles, games of bingo and great prizes with all funds going to St James Hospital Foundation. “It’s great to finally have a gay night in the North County for everyone living out this way, instead of having to trek into town all the time. It would be amazing to win and become Mr Gay Ireland and go on to be an ambassador in Mr Gay World and do even more charity work, just gotta cross my fingers now and impress the judges on the night,” concluded Omar. The online vote on pigsback.com ends this Thursday, October 21st for anybody who would like to vote.

Big Recycling Party In Swords The European Recycling Platform (ERP Ireland) is throwing a party in Swords, and everyone can attend. The party is to celebrate ERP’s milestone collection of one Million Tonnes of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) across its 11 countries in Europe. The party takes place at the Wright Venue in Swords on 21st October 2010 from 8.00pm till late and entrance is open to anyone over 18 and is free to those who bring with them a piece of WEEE. ERP is holding recycling days from Monday 18th to Thursday 21st October at the Wright Venue. People can simply drop off their

old electrical item and collect their wristband to be included on the guest list! As well as celebrating the milestone achievement, the main aim of the Million Tonne recycling party is to raise awareness of the importance of recycling unwanted electronic goods. ERP is encouraging party goers to declutter and bring anything that has, or indeed had, a plug or battery to the party to gain free entry. One Million Tonnes of recycled electrical waste is equivalent to the removal of 3.5 million cars from the road for one year around Europe. ERP has also saved the emission of 11.2 million tonnes of CO2 through the recovery of raw materials – this is the equivalent of flying around the world three million times

PLAN FOR CHRISTMAS Use The Club, Not The Credit Card The downturn in the economy has resulted in many people experiencing debt for the first time in their lives. Many people are faced with credit card debt and owe various loans here and there. Panic can set in as Christmas is fast approaching and if your one of the many who hasn’t started planning for Christmas or other special occasions, it’s not too late to start and maybe you can be the one in your family or circle of friends to start a club. Clubs of all sorts are a great idea for all of life’s little luxuries and they can be lots of fun and as they say, ‘Back in the Good Old Days’. That’s why it is such a good idea to become involved in Christmas clubs which take the pain and hardship out of the festive season. Unfortunately, Christmas has been taken over by commercial interests long ago, and while we give out about it every year, we still are forced to go along with it. This leads to all kinds of pressure and, at a time that banks are reluctant to loosen their icy grip on credit, people are forced into the arms of greedy money lenders. This course of action must be avoided at all costs, as exorbitant interest rates charged by these companies can lead families down the road to ruination. Planning for the big day is all important, remember, Christmas is not an emergency - it falls on December 25 every year, so you know it’s coming. However, it can sneak up on you when you’re not looking. Many local shops in the North County run yearly Christmas clubs and they take the sting out of handing over large amounts of cash at the last minute. The old fashioned clubs are making a big comeback and people realise that saving a little a week makes a lot when it comes to paying out. The County Leader will examine various aspect of Christmas shopping which must be encountered - from single people buying for parents, to newly married couples providing for extended families. Another area we will look at is new grandparents and how

house& home

As the days tick down to Christmas many people will be about thinking giving their home a spruce up for the festive season. It’s well very all throwing up a bit of a and tinsel Norwegian pine for the festivities, but you can change the look of your home on budget. any Sometimes it can be the simple things which cost next to nothing which make the impact, a throw across a neglected battered old sofa brings a wash of colour to a drab room. Even something as straightforward as changing can lampshades have a dramatic effect on the warmth of a room. Energy saving bulbs are also a great idea as the light is more muted bringing a cosier glow to a room. A few brightly coloured scatter cushions strategically placed around the house

will also make rooms look more inviting and comfortable. These days, a lot of homes have laminate wooden flooring and, to take the starkness off the

with warmer colours such as red, purple and chocolate brown, all proving popular just now. Candles and nighlights in burners seem to be very popular and

look, a brightly coloured rug will jazz up any room and scattering a few plantpots hardy around the house can also bring a bit of colour into a room. Alternatively, if you were feeling really energised you could give the old homestead a lick of paint

house, mixing nicely with the aromas wafting from the kitchen as the turkey and ham are roasted and glazed. If you are having guests to stay over the holiday period, that means that bedrooms and bathrooms may need a new look as well. The bedroom is fairly easy to change around- a new duvet set should do the trick and given current offers for bedding in shops across the North County, you should be able to maybe splash out a little bit add and more c o m f o r t e r s and cushions to the bedroom. guest Bathrooms can be more made welcoming by using candles, particularly

scented ones. Also make sure that you take care of the simple things, make sure the toilet bowl and bath or shower are clean and of course don’t commit the cardinal sin of the toilet paper running out! Get a little box or basket which can hold half a dozen rolls to save any embarrasment for either you or your guests. On the big day no doubt you will all be round the table for the big dinner, again dress the table in reds and greens to reflect the season. Perhaps invest in a set of napkin rings to bring that touch of class as you sit down and sip the mulled wine ahead of the big dinner. Candles can again be a big part of the table with maybe a sprig or two of holly set in some oasis with a few pebbles to make a cheap but effective centrepiece for your table.

The name of the area, Donabate, supposedly means "church of the ferry", from Dún a' Bháid, referring to an ancient church which is in the townland of Ballymadrough, west of Donabate, near the Malahide Estuary. Another possible meaning of the name, Domhnach Bheathach or Domhnach Béithe,

is "church of the beast". Sadly, the true meaning has become lost in the mists of time. Donabate is reported to have had a population in 1912 of 734 persons living in 150 houses, and it remained a small village for more than a century. In recent years, however, because of the area's easy access to Dublin (improving roads and the presence of a railway station in the village), the population has begun growing quickly. In the 1996 census, the village's population was 1,868; by the time of the 2002 census it had doubled to 3,854. It was estimated in 2004 that the population had grown to around 7,000, and planned re-zoning and development may take it to 33,000 or more within a decade. Donabate has exploded from a sleepy rural village into a vibrant and bustling town at the heart of the North County With housing estates popping up in the town’s outskirts, it’s not just the town’s population that has soared. Along with the boom in numbers has been a rise in the levels of community spirit and participation. And despite the rapid growth and expansion of the area the town hasn’t lost its old world charm, but rather the blend of old and new creates the best of both worlds! Indeed Donabate offers its locals a piece of the countryside, nestled amid sprawling fields, as well as only being a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. Donabate is

easy to get to, only a ten minute drive from Swords and located on the rail line with Drogheda and the capital city both easy to get to. The Donabate peninsula is also a popular destination for avid walkers and is one of the most scenic areas of the North County. The walk along the cliffs to Portrane offers great views out to Lambay Island, Howth Head and the Dublin Mountains and is the perfect remedy to waking yourself up on a sleepy Sunday afternoon. Martello Towers, built by the British in 1806 in anticipation of a French invasion, can also be seen en route. There are also numerous small coves and caves, which were the haunt of smugglers in the 18th Century. The beach at Donabate is one of the region’s most popular and is used by locals all year round. If it’s history you’re looking for then look no further than Newbridge House erected in 1736. Original family furniture, paintings and a curiosity museum are great features of this Georgian gem. The cobblestone courtyard includes all the original farm buildings and a trip to the petting farm is always a must for any family! Similarly you can have a real pamper me day with a visit to the local hair salon and a nice meal in the local hotel where you can unwind with fabulous views across the bay. The centre of the village has a wonderful array of services where you can check out property opportunities at the local estate agents and look at other people's homes. Here you will get ideas on home improvements and with winter on the way, now is a great time to improve security at home by getting new outdoor lighting, as well as revamping your indoor lights from the local electrical supplier. It is time to head for home, but before you go, you can pick up the newspaper and some provisions at the local newsagents. The town

also has great sporting facilities with six golf clubs in the immediate area if you want to spoil a good walk as the renowned wit Oscar Wilde once observed. Two of them are superb links courses while the other quartet are well appointed parkland courses.

Deputy Michael Kennedy (FF) has confirmed that two schools in the North County are to receive high speed broadband under a Government scheme. “Malahide Community School and Loreto Secondary School, Balbriggan will both receive high speed broadband under the €13 million Broadband to Schools Scheme. The schools will get 100 megabit high speed fibre and wireless broadband,” said Kennedy. “The Broadband speeds that will now be available to these schools are the equivalent to the speeds on offer to multinational corporations here. I am delighted to see this investment in schools in Malahide and Balbriggan and I can confirm the Government’s Broadband to Schools scheme will be available to other local secondary schools within the next two years.” He continued, “As our economy becomes more high-tech it is vital that students are confident in their use of technology and having these extra facilities at schools will assist that. This announcement for Loreto Secondary School follows the awarding of the contract last month for a major construction project of more than 3,600 square metres. This extension and revamp will include a new PE hall and general and specialist classrooms over two storeys,” he concluded.

Enda Kenny Visits Donabate There was great excitement in Donabate recently, when Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny paid a visit to Donabate/Portrane Educate Together School. He was accompanied by his deputy leader, James Reilly and shadow Education spokesman, Fergus O’Dowd. His visit included a reception for him by the schoolchildren, who sang with great effort. Paul Rowe, Chief Executive of Educate Together speaking at the event commented, “When the country is struggling to pay its bills, the expansion of an unproven, high cost model into a low cost base sector simply does not make sense. We applaud the Tánaiste’s stated intent to respond to the demands the changing shape of Irish society places on our education system. However, it must be questioned why the state is creating its own version of a multidenominational school, when a highly successful, cost efficient option already exists. We are ready to meet the needs of our changing education system and are ready to work closely with the Department of Education and Skills to meet the high demand for new multi-denominational schools around the country, he said.” Educate Together operates 58 multi-denominational primary schools nationwide and has applications for 43 further schools pending with the Department. Its model is based on providing equality for all children irrespective of their social, cultural or religious backgrounds. Educate Together opened its first school in 1978 and in 2008 opened 12 schools simultaneously. Places in Educate Together schools are highly sought after and 13,000 pupils are currently being taught the national curriculum in their schools.

Metro Must Be Delivered “We cannot be parochial” - Ryan Continued from page 1 analysis it does not stack up, it should be deferred not abandoned. Fianna Fail’s Michael Kennedy and Green Party’s Trevor Sargent were equally forceful about Metro North. Sargent said, “It is very

clear that the Green Party and I are putting every ounce into delivering Metro North. It is essential on so many fronts and construction will give a lifeline to employment in the area. It will connect, not only Swords, but its hinterland with the city. For an international airport and capital town, it is long overdue and will cost less than expected due to recession. Why does Eamon Gilmore torpedo the biggest job stimulus in the country.? Come what may, Metro North must be delivered,” he concluded. An equally determined Michael Kennedy, (FF) said, “My commitment to this project is firm. The economic and community benefits are too good to walk away from. As long as I represent the people in Dublin North, this project will be built and now is the time to invest in our future. It

can and it must be built and the opposition would serve my constituents, the people of the Dublin and the whole country very well by getting behind Metro North 100 per cent,” concluded Kennedy. Local businesses continue to stress the importance of Metro North to the economic survival of the region. Tony Lambert, CEO of Fingal Dublin Chamber of Commerce was very positive about its benefits when he told the County Leader, “Metro North is the single most important project for the North County region for the foreseeable future. The economic potential of this

Metro North is a much larger project, with enormous benefits for the youngest, fastest growing area in the country.

COMMENT

The compelling arguments in favour of Metro North are indisputable. For this to happen, we must ensure that we elect the most passionate and single minded people to the next Dail, in order that we can all pass on this golden opportunity to future generations. History will not be kind to us if we let this slip away. It age profile and the fastest growing population in the country and we are in a position to provide talented, well educated people for the jobs that will follow as a result of Metro North. The chamber fully supports this public transport project and is confident it will be delivered successfully,” he concluded.

There is no sustainable economic argument against Metro North, as the development cost is being borne by the tenderers. Alan’s work ranges from landscapes to portraits to supernatural scenes and is very inviting on the eye. Every painting opens up a new window of senses and emotion once viewed. Alan has been painting and drawing for over 20 years now and has a very broad range of work. The exhibition was un-named on account of the amount of different styles and subjects included. difference between his paintings and a photograph, so realistic is his work. Alan’s first exhibition was called ‘Shades Of Angels’ and was influenced by painting spiritual scenes and angels. His early work included spiritual scenes, fairies and fantasies where he would then have to add a background to these works and this is when he would introduce landscape. His inspiration comes to him in different ways and he paints things he sees and likes, it’s not always planned. Alan told the County Leader, “ I have always loved painting and used acrylics for a long time because as much as I wanted to use oil, I couldn’t master it. Four years ago, I found a flair for oils and haven’t stopped since. My ambition is to start working towards bringing two to three exhibitions of my work on display yearly. I now have an agent, Joe Lynch and with his help, I hope to bring this dream to fruition,” he concluded.

Donabate for their Autumn/Winter Production, The show will run from 4th to 7th November at 8.30pm. The play marks the directorial debut for Daphne Lynders and stars Neill Kellett as the “Bull” McCabe. St Finian’s Community College will hold their Awards Evening on November 2nd in the Europa Academy, Balheary Road, Swords. Well known local business man Bill Cullen will be the guest speaker on the evening.

Beastly Bagel Bar and Tony of the Glittery Goldsmiths might show you the skeletons in the shop closets. After all the bounty in Balbriggan (kindly provided by the Torture Chamber of Commerce) has been collected, children and their parents can boo-gie down at the fancy dress party in the terrifying town hall from 2pm-4pm. On hand to fight off the monsters will be the fearless teenagers of the Balbriggan Youth Group. WHO DECIDES WINNER? Find out just how scary, or silly you really are in the ‘Best Dressed’ competition. Prizes will also be given for the best home-made costume and the best costume made from charity shop purchases (because you can be nice while trying to look your meanest). While you enjoy your spoils, vote for the spookiest shop front in Balbriggan. But the fiendish fun doesn’t stop there. On Sunday, Freaky Foroige will host macabre music groups at a bandstand where revolting refreshments will be for sale. If you get so frightened you forget, posters will mysteriously appear around Balbriggan to remind you. The winning poster was designed by Kayleigh Ryan, a 6th year student at St. Molaga’s School in Balbriggan and the winning limerick was composed by Dargile Puidokaite, also 11 and a 6th year student at St Molaga’s School. Remember, there’s no escape! So clear your creaky calendars to hunt for treasure, boo-gie down at the party and listen to some Balbriggan banshees... It’ll be a scream!

North County Leader’s Weekly Helpful Guide For Jobseekers

Preparing for interview Writes Siobhán Kinsella Firstly congratulate yourself on being called for interview. You have succeeded in presenting your skills and experience as a solution to the employer’s vacant role! Remember when and how you found the vacancy, the research you did and the effort you put into your CV and cover note. The object of each of those exercises and the time and effort you invested was to get this interview. Your efforts have succeeded in getting you an opportunity to sell yourself in person. Now don’t let yourself down. You only have one chance to make a first impression! Regardless of the role wear business attire, a suit or freshly

pressed shirt and trousers/ skirt. If you are wearing nail varnish make sure it is not chipped! Find out the dress code of the company and please be aware that visible piercings (except ears) are not well regarded in most work environments. Do your research on the company; make sure you go to the “about us” section of their website and google them for details of any recent news about them. Also remember to spend time reviewing your own CV. Firstly give a firm handshake, smile and thank the interviewer or panel for seeing you. Make eye contact, if your interview is with a panel always look at the person speaking to you. Consider your answers in positive terms where possible, you are a “can do” person. If you are asked for an example it is a competency based interview. To score points in a competency based interview you must answer the questions with specific examples not general terms. Therefore include the year, the company you were

working in, the circumstances / situation and the outcome to score maximum points.Remember to have positive questions at the end of the interview and always close by thanking the interviewer or the panel for their time! Best of Luck
