Welcome Return Of Red Kites To North County A

momentous occasion took place last week, with the release of 26 red kites in Newbridge House. After an absence of several hundred years, red kites will soon be gliding over the fields and woods across the North County. Minister for the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan T.D., released the first batch of birds from aviaries in a secluded wood within the demesne.

By Patrick Finnegan The kites, which were collected under licence from wild nests in Wales were released in the public park and a further 13 young kites will be released shortly from a private location in the north of the county. In order to maximise the potential for an expanding Red Kite population in Ireland, it was decided to release 39 red kites in the North County area and establish a satellite population half way between the red kite populations in County Wicklow and County Down. It is expected that this project will be a welcome addition to the rich and varied natural heritage in North County Dublin and that sightings of these graceful and colourful birds will further enhance the local community’s appreciation of their nearby amenities and wildlife. All the kites released here and also those released in Down and Wicklow over the years have been sourced in Wales from wild young kites. “I have great hopes that the release of these red kites here today, will lead to a situation in a number of years where we will have a viable, sustainable and enjoyable population

of red kites,” said Minister Deenihan. Mr Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer, stated that “the County Council are very happy to work with the Golden Eagle Trust and facilitate the Red Kite project at Newbridge Demesne and the restoration of this majestic bird to our countryside”. The project has been supported by representatives of the local Irish Farmers Association (IFA) and the National Association for Regional Game Councils (NARGC). All the birds were attached with a small radio transmitter, each with a

It was decided at the outset to release the birds in or near to busy public parks, even though this may have run the risk of the birds being disturbed or found during the very sensitive captive phase. The Golden Eagle Trust would like to reassure the people of the North County that now that the birds have been released, they intend to open the Red Kite project up to the public and their local media as much as possible by regular media updates, educational activities, project website reports and public talks. North County Dublin and adjoining counties offers ideal red kite foraging and breeding habitat. Red Kites primarily feed in farmland areas and nest in mature trees. Experience amongst the farming and shooting interests in Wales over the last century prove that the rather light weight kite is not a threat to livestock or game birds.

Pressure will continue to be placed on local minister Leo Varadkar, who will ultimately decide whether this vital project goes through or not. Cllr Coppinger (SP) said: “We would like to meet with the Minister to really emphasise our case for the Metro North. We will be looking to put across the point of the project being a good economic investment and will be also reminding

him of his pre-election promise to have Metro North delivered, a feature of his campaign poster.” The Metro North will create an initial 6,000 jobs- 4,000 in the construction phase with 2,000 indirect jobs following. According to the economic plan for the project, a further 25,000 to 37,000 jobs will then be created locally over the next decade.

Heineken Cup Visits Swords Rugby Club Shoppers may have spotted the Heineken Cup being held aloft by the Swords Rugby Football Club in the Pavilions Shopping Centre recently. Leinster became European Champions winning the Heineken Cup earlier this summer and the Swords RFC took the opportunity to offer rugby fans the chance to get their photo taken with the cup and talk about the club. The Swords RFC was born out of the Aer Lingus RFC and the ALSAA RFC, becoming the one club in July 2005. They train on Tuesdays and Thursdays in ALSAA and welcome all rugby players from beginners to the experienced. In September, they will start their new Mini Rugby team for 5-12 year olds, which will take place on Sundays at 10.30am at their new pitch in Holywell. The County Council granted the club the p i t c h l a s t October, making it the first dedicated rugby pitch in Swords. Residents Vulnerable Without Rangers By Jennifer McShane Residents who visit Swords Town Park and River Valley Park are left in a vulnerable state, thanks to the recent withdrawal of the Park Rangers. The parks are now unsupervised with gates to both being left open 24 hours a day. According to Cllr Eugune Coppinger (SP), “this will lead to added anti-social behaviour and reduce the safety and security of people using the parks.” The council have recently rejected these claims, however

Busy Times For Malahide Lions Club

Pupils at Little Ruggers Montessori School, Malahide, raised €550 for St Michael’s House, one of Ireland’s largest providers of community based services for children and adults with an intellectual disability. The funds were raised by the pupils by selling copies of their annual play on DVD, and the money will be used to support St. Michael's House Early Services Programmes. A New Home For Balbriggan Group

Balbriggan Cancer Support Group will finally have their own base. Unit 22 on Harry Reynolds Road in Balbriggan is the building that will be home to their meetings from now on. The committee met recently in the Parish Hall in Balbriggan to launch an appeal to the volunteers to come along and assist the group with fundraising on a permanent basis. McLoughlins Oil People made the first step and donated them the building, now the group are calling on residents for support in order to purchase all equipment necessary

for the new building. “We need people to donate anything they can. We would like people to know that our joint efforts are not only for Balbriggan, but for the whole of North County Dublin.” said Maire Dunne, a committee member. The group is a community driven, volunteer based organisation that was established in April 2010 by a group of local people concerned with the lack of cancer support within the area. The meetings are held, for the time being, in the “Meals on Wheels” base on Hampton Street every Thursday at 7.30pm. The group hopes to have the new premises ready to be launched in six weeks time.

August is proving to be a particularly busy month for Malahide Lions Club, with two very exciting projects in the pipeline. The club and the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland have arranged a steam train journey from Malahide to Wicklow on Sunday, August 7th. Participants will depart from Malahide Train Station at 10.30am and return at 4.35pm. Tickets cost €35 per person and family tickets (two adults and two children under 12 years old) cost €110. Tickets are available from Malahide Train Station and all proceeds from the trip will go to the Ross Nugent Foundation. Everyone is encouaged to come and join in what will be two fantasic days out. Also, a Classic and Vintage Car Show is to be held at Malahide Cricket Club later this month, in a one-off event, hosted in conjunction with Malahide Lions Club and North Dublin Rotary. The show will take place on home soil in Malahide Demense on Sunday, August 21st between 11am and 6pm. It will provide car lovers with the once in a lifetime opportunity to view classic and vintage cars when the pitch will be open to all vehicles for one-day only. The announcement comes during an exciting time for Malahide Cricket Club following the recent news of a new international standard Cricket Facility to be built shortly after this month’s car show.

RNLI Charity Run in Skerries The RNLI in Skerries are organising a five and 10km charity run which will take place on August 7th at 12pm at Skerries Harbour. All participants are asked to meet at the Figure 8 gym in Skerries. All proceeds from the run will go to Skerries RNLI. Since this will be the first year of the charity run, everyone is encouraged to come out and participate in what is sure to be a fantastic day of fun. Fun Day For Naul Golf Society The 7th Captains Day outing of the Naul Golf Society took place recently. The sunny day on the golf course resulted in 60 golfers taking part on the day. A tasty barbecue was held after the golf and prizes were given out. Everyone who attended then danced the night away in the club house until the early hours of the next morning. A great, fun filled day was had by all and the Captain and Committee would like to thank their sponsors for the lovely display of prizes. Dog Show At Newbridge House By Jennifer Ryan Newbridge House was host to the wagging tails of dogs of all shapes and sizes recently at the recent Little Hill Animal Rescue Dog Show. The Little Hill Animal rescue is a animal sanctuary located in Ballymore Eustace, Co. Kildare which rescues and rehabilitates neglected dogs, cats and horses. They also recently rehoused several hundred ex-battery hens. The charity is funded entirely by donations and holds various events to help fundraising. The fun dog show which took place beside Newbridge House in the demesne held over 10 categories, including 'Best Rescue', 'Best Outfit' and 'Cutest Face'. It was a great fun day out for families, with neither children nor dogs put off by the drizzling rain. Goodie bags and rosettes were given out to the participants and winners and the classes were judged by Celebrity guest judges, Orlaith Rafter, Trish Murphy from aboutyourdog.ie and Deirdre Walsh.

Leaflets have been distributed in parts of Swords, hand-delivered, with no address on the envelope and no signature on the letter from a company calling themselves ‘River Forest Partnership’ and a request for payment of ground rent of €550. Local councillor, Darragh O’Brien (FF) said, “We need to highlight this as a scam and alert residents not to get taken in by this. If received, please note the date it was delivered and contact your local Garda Station and warn neighbours that this is indeed a scam.”

The Dublin Airport Authority staff are continuing to go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to fundraising for the DAA Charity of the Year The 3T's - Turning The Tide of Suicide. Recently the County Leader reported on the members of the Dublin Airport Police and Fire Service who rowed across the Irish Sea from Howth to Holyhead in 12 hours to raise money for the charity. Now another group of DAA staff have attempted to match this event - by jumping out of a plane flying at 10,000 feet. Twenty-four members of the DAA travelled down to Clonbullogue, Co.Offaly to

Colour Splash From Balbriggan Youth Service Some shop windows in Balbriggan town were brought to life recently, thanks to some creative young people who had the brilliant idea to fill them with ingenious designs. The event is part of the Balbriggan Youth Service’s Summer Programme, which aims to involve young people in fun and educational activities with people of their own age. A total of 17 teenagers demonstrated their talent and paint the windows in empty buildings in Balbriggan. Young people worked with artist, Alison O’Grady, to come up with the ideas as to what to paint. “We decided to paint the windows to involve young people in their community during the summer months. The idea is to improve the appearance of the vacant shop units here in Balbriggan and bring some colour to the community,” said Derval Cumiskey, Senior Youth Officer at Balbriggan Youth Service. “We would be delighted to paint any other windows or boarded up premises in the area, so please do not hesitate to contact the Youth Service if you know a building that needs sprucing up,” she added.

Thornton Hall Prison Gets The Go Ahead Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence, Alan Shatter recently published the Thornton Hall Review Group Report. It means that the new prison is set to go ahead as planned, thus dashing any lingering hopes the local residents committee may have harboured to the contrary. The Minister confirmed that the Government has approved the Reportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recommendations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I very much welcome the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to accept, in principle, the recommendations detailed in the

North County Dublinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Report,â&#x20AC;? he said. The timeframe for the Thornton Hall project as outlined in the Report will be discussed in the autumn in the context of the Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s discussions on capital spending priorities for 2012.â&#x20AC;? It stresses the need to improve prison regimes and conditions and to provide in-cell sanitation. It recommends that a new prison, with 300 cells capable of accommodating 500 prisoners be developed at Thornton Hall. The Minister also announced that the Government has decided to abolish the Prisons Authority (Interim) Board, which was set up in 1998.

Martello Towers Exhibition In Rush Library Rush Library will be hosting the Martello Towers of Dublin exhibition from 22nd August until 2nd September. There are 28 Towers from Balbriggan to Bray along the coast. The exhibition will feature a vast amount of information on these landmarks, plus the Fingal Archives have also recently been presented with the original deed of conveyance for the site of Balbriggan Martello Tower which will also be on display as part of the exhibition. It is hoped that this new exhibition will stimulate further interest and research into this fascinating group of buildings. Perhaps you have an old photograph or documents relating to the towers? Superstars Week In Balbriggan Balbriggan’s got talent! This is undoubtedly the conclusion of the “Superstars” Week, hosted recently by Balbriggan Youth Service, starting from 18th July. The week long experience was open to talented young people from Balbriggan, aged 12 to 16, who love the performing arts. Over 50 teenagers had the chance to improve their hip-hop dancing skills, to try their hand at Magic Tricks, to perform stand-up comedy, to learn DJ’s tips or to play drama. “The Kids were very shy at the beginning. Over the week, they worked very hard. We had a great spirit inside the group. They came up with good ideas and on the Friday night we also performed a play,” said Brid Turner who supervised the drama production “Snow White and Seven Dwarfs and Others.” “The kids absolutely loved this experience. The whole show included all their ideas and we had great feedback from all the tutors and young people, everyone really enjoyed the week and made new friends,” said Derval Cumiskey, Senior Youth Officer at Balbriggan Youth Service. The “Superstars” Talent Week was part of Balbriggan Youth Service summer programme which aims to involve young residents in activities during the summer months.

Small Businesses Getting ‘Social’ On-Line Fingal County Enterprise Board, the small business support agency for the North County, is organising a free workshop for business owners, called: ‘Social Media In Your Business,’ as part of Fingal Enterprise Week in September. With half the adult population of Ireland regularly using social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, the small business community are being encouraged to use social media tools to better connect with customers and suppliers. The Biggest Circulation Of

Brilliant Day For Balbriggan The recent Balbriggan Fun Fest Day, which featured a number of pedal car races through the town, has been hailed as a major triumph. The initiative, which took place on Sunday, 24th July last, also included free family fun and entertainment, was the brainchild of Ian Lawless, Chairman of the Balbriggan Formula Fun. He was ably assisted by the Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce, as well as Balbriggan Town Council. The fun filled day was packed with atmosphere and excitement from the word go. It had the full support of the entire town and this was reflected in the outstanding estimated attendance figure of 3,500. This, by any standard, is a ringing endorsement of the commitment of Balbriggan’s residents to pull together and show what a spirited lot they are. All the organisations managed to pull together in an extraordinary display of community spirit, which has drawn praise for near and far. Younger kids in particular, had a ball and showed a great sense of anticipation and skill as they jockeyed for position at tight corners. You could taste the atmosphere, which never waned on the day. Surely a terrific achievement by the organisers. A very proud Ian Lawless spoke to the County Leader about the dedication of those who were given the task of ensuring the success of the day. “Anthony Murphy from the Balbriggan Chamber brought all of his extensive business acumen to bear and this ensured that the shop fronts in the town were beautifully presented and bargains were available to keen shoppers. Brian Murray from the Balbriggan Town Council was a complete workhorse and left no stone unturned to ensure the success of the day. Both men are worthy of particular mention,” said Lawless. The town resembled something from the Tour de France, with all hands packed tightly on the foot-

paths cheering on the participants in each race. This wonderful atmosphere was greatly enhanced by the excellent PA system, with Alison Comyn giving a continuous commentary on the progress of the participants. Ian Lawless also spoke of the unsung heroes of the day, people like Ray Nugent was got up in the middle of the night to ensure that roads were closed off and hanging baskets were well watered. He also mentioned Seamus Murphy for the use of his storage facilities. “It could not have happened without the support of our local retailers and our brilliant sponsors,” he said. The main sponsors of the event were Moriarty SuperValu, Hamilton Park Nursing Home, North County Leader Newspaper, Balbriggan Credit Union and Bridgestone Tyres. Other sponsors who contributed to the success of the day include, Goldsmith Jewellers, Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce, Balbriggan Town Council, Fingal County Council, Aidan Bissett, who sponsored the kiddies’ karts, Molly’s Coffee Gallery, who provided refreshments for volunteers on the day, The Coffee Pot, who sponsored the face painting, Apache Pizza, Foras na nGaeilge, Harry’s Hire, Pac-On Waste, Mark Halligan, Eric Campbell of Walking Catastrophe Productions, Gallen Alliance, Balbriggan.net and Balbriggan.info Anthony Murphy spoke about a ‘tremendous feel good factor all around the town, with bouncy castles and entertainment by Brush Shields. The buzz word in all of this is FREE. Because of the generosity of our sponsors, we were able to provide all of this for free.” Special mention was made to the contribution of local Community Gardai, Dave Sheeran, Kate Daly Ní Bhrion and Inspector Jacinta Harley, who gave great support to the day. One of the highlights of the day for Ian Lawless was when a lady approached him with her son in his wheelchair, said that her son, who is mad about motorbikes in particular, had the best day ever. Anthony Murphy said that there were business people from surrounding towns who want to be involved in future events. They want to hold heats for this event in their own towns, with the final being held in Balbriggan. It looks like the Balbriggan Formula Fun committee have struck gold. In the words of Ian Lawless, “It was a brilliant day for Balbriggan.”

Balbriggan Group Seeks Volunteers The Balbriggan Cancer Support Group (CSG) is a community driven and volunteer based organisation that was established in May 2010 by a group of local men and women concerned with the lack of cancer support within Balbriggan. Their mission is to be a message of hope and an opportunity to get involved in the fight against cancer. They provide information and support to all people affected by cancer and those who care for them. Balbriggan Children Make Huge Impression Balbriggan children have made a significant contribution to Dublin’s efforts to be designated as World City of Design 2014. Young architect and Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce Council member, Aoife Banim recently organised a hugely successful exhibition in the Bracken Court Hotel of children’s photographs, essays and models of their vision of the heritage and built-environment potential for their ‘Heart of Balbriggan’ exhibition. The children’s exhibition was in support of the adult Public Realm Plan (PRP) for the Town Centre, which is shortly to be published and follows from a huge level of community participation at Public and Special Interest meetings over the last nine months. The Balbriggan Children’s Public Realm Plan exhibits were so

impressive that Aoife, with the assistance of Celine O’Rourke, Town Architect, got an invitation to participate in the major exhibition launch at the Wood Quay Atrium of Dublin City Council. Aoife’s Balbriggan Schools’ PRP exhibition is unique among Dublin towns. This Dublin exhibition is part of an adjudication process by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design in a competition for possible designation as World Design Capital 2014. The award is made biannually to cities which best use design to benefit people socially, culturally and economically. Dublin is already shortlisted in this competition, as one of just three cities worldwide, the other 2 being Bilbao and Capetown. The winner will be announced in the Autumn. The bid has been prepared as a joint venture between the four local authorities of the greater Dublin area.

Swords Ladies Organise Charity Night Swords resident and local child minder, Michelle Mc By Peter Kearney Sweeney, along with her good friend Noelle Driver are organising a charity night in aid of the ISPCC and Barnardos. The event called Charity for Hilarity, takes place on Friday 7th October in Dublin city centre. It’s an extremely worthy cause, which Michelle indirectly became involved with at a very young age, when her grandmother volunteered at Barnardos some years ago. Michelle and Noelle were inspired to raise funds for both these charities, as neither receives much government funding. Donabate Tyre and Service Centre recently re-opened its doors after a fire back in January forced the garage to close. The centre was originally opened back in August 2009 by owner, Steven Styles. The new garage was officially re-opened by County Mayor, Gerry McGuire. The centre is well known in Donabate and is also the sponsor of the local St. Patrick’s GAA team. A grand reopening took place with a fantastic BBQ by father and son team, Wayne and Ben Hand from Hand Catering in Donabate, entertainment from Singer Brian Carey. The event is being held to raise funds so that the club can build an indoor training facility.
