Approval For New Town Centre For Lusk The news that the new Lusk Town Centre proposal, scheduled for the heart of Lusk has been given approved by Bord Pleanala, has been given an enthusiastic welcome by a local county councillor. Cllr. Tom O’Leary (FG) said that the new development has the potential to create over 200 local retail and service jobs in the town. He told the County Leader, “I welcome the confirmation that the long awaited new town centre facilities for Lusk have been approved by Bord Pleanala on 21st July last. I note there have been some concerns by community organisations in Lusk about the scale and intensity

of this proposal, but Bord Pleanala have taken those concerns into account by scaling back on some of the commercial development.” “The proposed retail discount store, the drive through restaurant and the petrol station have all been excluded and removed by Bord Pleanala, who recommend that this portion of the site be replaced by appropriate residential development,” confirmed O’Leary. The site area covers 18 acres right in the centre of Lusk, which is now a town of 10,000 residents which will grow to 12,500 over the next number of years under the current Fingal Development Plan.

An Accident Waiting To Happen

A very hazardous situation for pedestrians to the north of Swords, has been highlighted recently. It involves a potentially dangerous footpath running from the Lissenhall Industrial Park, where the HSE Ambulance is located, as well as other businesses. This pathway, as it approaches the Estuary Roundabout beside Fingallians GAA grounds, becomes overgrown and inaccessible. Pedestrians here are forced to climb over a crash barrier of the busy R132 to continue their journey on a narrow sliver of grass, right along the road. This area is also home to Eve Estuary, which is attended by people with intellectual disabilities. It is believed that some of

Local councillor, Joe Newman (NP) contacted the County Leader and said, “I was contacted by a local resident who notices people travelling by foot along the grass footpath on their way to Swords. There are a number of local businesses in the area and workers may have a need to use this footpath from time to time. It is also the only pedestrian access to Swords. I inspected the area and I will be putting in a request to the Operation Department of the County Council to have this footpath made more accessible,” he said. For anyone trying to access this area by foot, this represents a

major safety hazard, particularly as there is a southbound Bus Eireann stop at Lissenhall. This indicates that passengers will alight here and may proceed on foot from here. It has also been noticed that pedestrians cross the R132, to access the northbound R132, a very dangerous thing to do, rather than proceed southbound to the pedestrian fly-over bridge, thus avoiding this perilous pathway. The County Leader contacted the County Council about when this overgrown section of pathway would be addressed. A spokesperson replied, “The matter has been referred to the Inspector for the area who will examine the location. If the report is correct any works required will be carried out as soon as possible.”

Community Collaboration At Its Best

“While the work is purely for the top of the charity boxes, they could easily double over as trophies, such is the quality of work done by the Men’s Shed. It’s a really lovely example of community co-operation at its best,” said Tom. Sean Corrigan of Balbriggan Men’s Shed said, “Our job was focused on putting the dog and the timber together. This is another excellent example of collaboration between Balbriggan Men’s Shed and other community organisations. The Men’s Shed got a gift of some mahogany from Gormanston College when they were closing down the school. Out of that, we were able to train the men in the use of a router, so they were able to cut a nice shape around the timber and mount the dog on to that. This was all done at the request of Tom O’Neill of the Balbriggan/North

Tom O’Neill of the Balbriggan/North County Dublin Guide Dogs Association spoke about an unusual collaboration he had with the Balbriggan Men’s Shed, where local community co-operation saved the day. Tom told the County Leader about how his involvement with the Men’s Shed came about. He said, “I’m a bit of a hoarder and I don’t like waste. We would normally have about 80 charity boxes at various counter tops at locations across North County Dublin and some of these inevitably get damaged. Some of the iconic dogs that are mounted on these boxes would have been taken off, broken off or just fell off. One of the teams won their cup, whilst the other one performed heroically losing out in the plate final on penalties to local rivals, Swords Manor FC. This was the first time the under 10s got their hands on a piece of silverware and coaches, Ciaran and Aidan worked wonders. Alan Curran deserves great praise for winning the top goal scorer trophy when he topped seven goals,a great feat. Malahide Golf Club member, Marie Falvey set a special record in this, her club’s 125th anniversary year. She has won the AllIreland Mother and Daughter Foursomes competition for the third time, all with different partners. On June 30th last at Donabate Golf Club, Marie won her third All Ireland Mother and Daughter Foursomes competition, with her daughter, Deirdre Sheehan, a member of Kanturk Golf Club. In 1981, Marie won the inaugural “Freddie Moran” Cup with her mother, Marie. Then in 2015, she won her second All Ireland Mother and Daughter Foursomes with her daughter Ciara Smith from Malahide Golf Club. Fred Moran, Captain of Malahide Golf Club in 2012 and son of Freddie Moran presented the “Freddie Moran” Perpetual Cup to Marie and Deirdre at a well-attended ceremony at Donabate Golf Club. This is a marvellous achievement by Marie, to have won this prestigious event as both mother and daughter.

Balbriggan Shop Front Enhancement Scheme Extended The Balbriggan Town Shop Front Enhancement Grant scheme, which has brought great improvements to the streetscape in Balbriggan has been extended. The Scheme which began in 2016 will now incorporate Chapel Street, Railway Street, Clonard Street, Mill Street, Quay Street and High Street as well as the previous areas of Drogheda Street, Bridge Street, George’s Square and Dublin Street. The Scheme will provide financial assistance to business owners to improve shop fronts and commercial properties on the five identified streets in Balbriggan. Grant funding of up to 75 per cent of eligible costs is available to replace and renovate shop fronts or to paint shop fronts in the town centre. The Scheme which has been in operation since 2016 has proved to be hugely successful and following requests from the Chamber of Commerce in Balbriggan and individual business owners is now being extended. The Council, along with Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce wish to build on the success of the Scheme on Main Street. Donabate Now Included In Beach Wheelchair Scheme Local Fianna Fáil TD, Darragh O’Brien has welcomed the expansion of the Beach Wheelchair initiative, which has been rolled out across beaches in the North County. Specially adapted wheelchairs, which have wheels designed for sand, will be available at a number of popular beaches across the North County this summer. The Beach Wheelchair Project will allow children and adult wheelchair users to get onto the sand and up to the water’s edge at their local beach.

Commenting on the announcement, O’Brien said, “It is excellent news that the County Council has

announced the expansion of its pilot beach wheelchair initiative, which was launched in Portmarnock last summer. This service is free of charge and the Donabate wheelchairs service will be managed by the Waterside Hotel.” “I am delighted to see

Malahide Tidy Towns Fundraising Quiz Malahide Tidy Towns held their annual fundraising evening on 20th July last. It was a table quiz in The Grand Hotel in Malahide, which is one of the main sponsors of the event. The night was a great success with many local residents participating in the quiz, the venue was packed out and everybody was having fun. There was a lovely community atmosphere in the venue on the evening. This year, they have a new Secretary, Daphne Greene for Malahide Tidy Towns and she would like to thank volunteers individually for their significant contribution and most of all, for

Donabate Residents Demand Proper Development Recent proposals to build more houses in Donabate has caused concern amongst many residents. The crux of the concern for many is the potential overcrowding of the limited road space, schools and youth facilities. Traffic congestion has always been a problem but this has been accentuated by the a large scale building programme for the hospital grounds in Portrane.

Summer is rolling around again and with it the 3rd annual Donabate/Portrane Summer Festival. This year the festival runs from Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th August and the aim is to provide fun and entertainment for all the family. Thursday evening sees the second Citizen of the Year Award in the Waterside House Hotel. This was launched last year in Donabate Golf Club with great success. The idea is to give the people of the community a chance to highlight our unsung heroes; people who do a lot of work quietly behind the scenes and who make a big difference to the quality of other people’s lives. The response last year was fantastic, and the first winner, Mary Lynders was indeed a popular and worthy choice.

Do It! The division within the EU on the Refugee Relocation Scheme is about to be ruled on. The European Court of Justice will consider the submitted opinion of their Advocate General in the coming weeks. The issue was referred to the Court by the Government of two Member States, Slovakia and Hungary. Both states where joined by Romania and the Czech Republic when all four voted against the asylum seekers mandatory relocation scheme, when the Council of Ministers agreed the programme. A fifth member, Poland, supported the appeal to the court. It seems certain that the court will uphold the recommendation of the Advocate. It will be interesting to see what combined reaction such a decision will bring from this group of EU dissidents. Last week, France announced that it will commence prescreening of refugees within Libya. This is a sensible move and should contribute greatly to reducing the numbers availing of people traffickers. The EU should commence a joint operation. Such action will immediately save lives, put order on the movement of
