Jonathan Winchester, the CEO of Shopper Anonymous, will be, for the first time, unveiling the findings and discussing the “golden nuggets” that firms need, in order to keep ahead of their competition, as well as changing the public’s perception of the sector’s current standards.

Criminals attack and infiltrate the legal sector every day. From Friday fraud, vishing, phising, email hijacking and locky ransoms, through to ever more sophisticated attacks. Listen as we highlight an anonymous case study about how one firm learnt from being the victim of a £35,000 conveyancing scam. Learn from the mistakes of others as we highlight what you can do to protect and prevent your firm from also being a victim.

This session will cover current AML policy issues relating to the legal sector in the UK and also some practical issues that come with complying with AML rules. 10 Key Points When Choosing the Best Cloud Service for Your Firm

Why Firms Must Embrace ‘the Cloud’ to Realise the Value of New Technologies

Why Branding for Law Firms?

On-Premise vs Cloud Security: What Makes Yours Better Than Ours?

Matthew Newton Operations Director, Oosha Ltd

Joe de Wet LEAP Legal Software

Simon Thompson Managing Director, Change Harbour

In this seminar, Matthew will discuss the options for legal firms looking to migrate their IT to the cloud. Focus will be given to the 10 most important considerations when choosing a cloud service provider with special attention paid to the Solicitors Regulation authority (SRA) Silver Lining Report which outlines cloud computing guidelines for the legal sector. The importance of reliability, performance, information security & data sovereignty will be discussed.

Many firms claim to view technology as a key enabler for differentiation and driving profitability, however leadership in said firms continue to express frustration that their ever increasing technology spend is not delivering the promised business value, but why? Simon Thompson explains why firms must embrace the opportunities offered by cloud computing otherwise it seems inevitable that the more radical promises of new technology such as AI will continue to fail to materialise.

Time Recording in 2016: What’s Changed? The legal market is becoming increasingly competitive and doing things as efficiently as possible has become a must, if you want to maintain your firm’s profitability. Effective time recording therefore is essential. But what has changed and how do we do it better?

Graeme McGowan Technical Director, Bronzeye IBRM

People before cyber security before compliance. More than 60% of data breaches are caused by insider human error or malicious act. Around 80% of large breaches have their genesis in the supply chain. As our DP laws demand more proactivity from executives, with the threat of stiff penalties for failure, our information security defences must be strong, management must be on the ball and everyone must play their part.

Halyma Khanam Websites for Legal Firms

Websites have become a crucial part of marketing and is a great way to advertise your services, and demonstrate your expertise 24/7. However a website that is static with information, and has a “look”, which is not appropriate to their standing is causing some legal firms to lose out on gaining potential clients. In this seminar we explore why ignoring your image is attracting the prospects and clients you don’t want!

Learn why your firm should care much more about its enterprise-wide contracts! Contracts govern over 80% of your transactions. Consider this: A stunning 97% of people will research local professional services online before making a purchase decision and new survey data shows that law firms that aren’t using online marketing tactics are missing out on desirable work, regardless of their reputation or ability to complete that work (sources: BIA/ Kelsey; Alyn-Weiss).

WHY THIS MATTERS TO YOU… You now need a strong digital presence in order to be found (and found first) when potential clients are searching for your services. Where law firms have traditionally been dependent on existing relationships to generate new business, new survey data shows that the majority of clients are bringing their cases to firms that they find and research online without a recommendation or referral from a friend, colleague or lawyer (source: Alyn-Weiss).

This explains why 77% of professional firms now depend on their online presence to generate new business leads (source: Hinge).

authority and earn new clients between referrals.

The fact is, with increased competition from increasingly marketing-smart practices, you’re slowing down your entire firm’s growth when you don’t have systems in place to attract, respond to and convert your best prospects into clients.

You can break this process down into 3-steps; Attract, Respond, Convert.

GROW YOUR FIRM BETWEEN REFERRALS… New marketing isn’t about shouting louder than your competitors (and tarnishing your professional reputation in the process). Instead it’s about being more helpful and offering up the genuine expertise that your ideal clients need. Strategic online marketing not only brings you a consistent stream of pre-qualified enquiries (i.e. people who are looking for the services you offer and are ready to become paying clients), it also ensures that your firm grows predictably and sustainably. When done correctly, new marketing ensures you never miss an opportunity to engage prospects, establish your industry

WHERE TO START...

To attract your best clients, your firm should be producing original content for your website and distribution channels. CYBER SECURITY - TIME TO ACT Recent high profile data breaches have ensured cyber security is again a hot topic of discussion amongst law firms. And despite the best efforts of organisations to secure their systems, criminals know the weakest point is typically the individuals using the system, not the system itself. It’s important to train everyone in a firm, from senior partner to secretaries and fee-earners to support staff to recognise threats and understand how to reduce the risks of a serious breach, which might actually cost more in reputational damage than stolen data or a client’s money. But it’s time the focus switched to practical advice, rather than just news of more impending problems. At Quiss we deliver advice and training to staff at many law firms to help cut the risks, with best cyber security working practices including but not limited to these helpful hints:

PC & LAPTOP SECURITY • • • • •

Lock your PC when you leave your desk. Do not store private/sensitive information on your desktop or in unsecured local folders. If you receive an anti-virus alert, immediately report it to the helpdesk. Do not install any software/ apps that have not been specifically authorised. Read any on screen alerts and understand them. Don’t just click on them to get rid of them! Shut down your PC at the end of the day (to ensure updates are automatically installed).

MOBILE DEVICES • •

Lock mobile devices with a password or Personal Identification Number (PIN). Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth services when not in use.

PASSWORD SECURITY • • •

Learn how to create and remember strong passwords. Never disclose your password (even to IT Support). Change your password regularly.

E-MAIL SECURITY •

Look out for suspicious e-mails, e.g., address, content/wording, urgent requests, requests to follow links, unexpected attachments. Beware Phishing/Spear Phishing e-mails e.g., unexpected request/ information with familiar tone claiming personal knowledge. Be aware the address could be fake, double check content/wording, urgent requests, requests to follow links, unexpected attachments. Ensure you have appropriate e-mail security that’s current, patched and managed.

USING WI-FI – BEST PRACTICES • • • •

When using public Wi-Fi ensure you log off any services you were signed into. Tell your device to forget the network (to prevent future automatic connection). Make sure you can identify the correct network. Avoid conducting financial or corporate transactions on unsecure public networks.

IDENTIFY SECURE WI-FI CONNECTIONS • • •

Is the network name correct? Does it require a security code? Is the security code individual to you?

WEB BROWSING •

Identify secure web connections, check for https:// and a padlock in the browser. Be aware of/look for any suspicious links.

AWARENESS OF SOCIAL ENGINEERING •

Make sure your social networking profiles (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MSN, etc.) are set to private.

• •

Be aware of what information you share online e.g., LinkedIn. Be cautious when giving out personal information on the Internet.

USING PORTABLE MEDIA • • •

Never plug an unknown USB drive into your PC/Laptop. Do not plug your USB powered device into a public USB charging point. Encrypt USB drives if possible.

This list is by no means exhaustive and only scratches the surface of the complex challenge cyber security poses for law firms in this always-on, digital world, where criminals are developing ever more sophisticated methods to steal. We urge every law firm to provide regular cyber security training for everyone within their organisation, ideally as part of the induction process, as new starters are more vulnerable to attack in this way. If in doubt, find out how Quiss can help.

CYBERCRIME INITIATIVE The Bureau has been busy with its industry colleagues to address the growing incidence of cybercrime. Whilst much talked about, many firms remain uncertain about what threats they face. Ever the one

to keep ahead of the pack The Bureau has joined forces with The National Cyber Skills Centre and DEPH Risk, based in Malvern, who provide a programme of tailored and practical cyber training courses for staff and managers and are working closely with The Bureau to deliver workshops and formal courses for its clients and other professional firms. YOUR TIME IS OUR BUSINESS Our aim is to maximise your costs recovery with the minimum of fuss. Let our team of experts explain how today.

WHO ARE WE... Evolution Costs Ltd is one of the country’s leading costs drafting firms, dedicated to providing a complete, bespoke cradle-to-grave service for each of our Clients. We provide costs drafting services to a number of the profession’s best known law firms and are responsible for assisting them to maximise their revenue in the shortest possible timeframe. We operate in a sector that has stemmed from a profession to an industry and has now evolved to the point where lawyers are businessmen. Consequently, we recognise that each and every claim has to be viewed as a project and managed accordingly. We therefore treat every fee earner as a singular Client and identify

their individual requirements, at all times remaining alive to the needs of the Client firm as a whole. Put simply, we pride ourselves in providing the best strategic costs service in the marketplace. We have grown exponentially over the past decade to the point where we now provide our services to some of the largest names in the profession.

WHAT WE DO... We draft and negotiate Schedules of Costs, Statements of Costs, Budgets and detailed Bills of Costs up to the point of Provisional/Detailed Assessment. We also attend CCMCs and Detailed Assessments and draft any costs pleadings necessary to attain the result sought by our Clients. This includes Points of Dispute, Points of Reply and any interlocutory Application needed to obtain the required Order.

We are primarily instructed to deal with high value catastrophic personal injury claims, clinical negligence matters, heavy commercial bills and group litigation. Our Bills are regularly assessed in the Senior Court Costs Office and we have built up strong relationships with Costs Counsel based at Ropewalk Chambers and 4 New Square Chambers. Agreeing costs and getting paid are two very different things, however. We have a dedicated team that deals with the enforcement aspect where costs payments that have been agreed have not been received within the specified timeframe.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONTACT US... Our growth is organic and has always been sustained by word of mouth. We have never had a sales/ marketing machine like a number of our competitors; we prefer to be famous among the few. Our Client relationships are long term because we believe in cultivating relationships based upon trust. We constantly strive to exceed our Clients’ expectations, not just on day one, but throughout the ongoing business relationship.

Tikit P4W

We only employ experienced or qualified Costs Draftsmen and our staff turnover is low, so we can guarantee that the service you receive will be consistent throughout the life of the claim. We also work closely with a number of firms who provide disbursement funding and WIP drawdown facilities at the point the Bill of Costs is served. The monies released are usually in the region of 70-80% of the realistic value of the Bill of Costs, which means that our Clients cannot be held to ransom by third parties who think that they might under settle claims simply for cash flow purposes. Want some free costs advice? Or just fancy a coffee and a chat? Come and speak to us at Stand L256 and Matt and Mark will do whatever they can to help you.

ENHANCING YOUR CLIENT DUE DILIGENCE The Money Laundering Regulations state client due diligence should be undertaken using a risk based approach. Is the Internet an option for a firm faced with a higher risk client?

The challenge of the MLRO is to make an assessment of the different clients their firm may deal with. From this, an approach must be developed to say how the available sources of information should be used to undertake due diligence at the right level for the right client. To assist a firm in getting to know more about their client, many systems and databases exist. These offer information covering a variety of areas such as sanctions and PEP, ID verification, and adverse media. After all of these available systems, there is another option which should not be overlooked. The Internet contains a wealth of information and is growing daily. Whilst it is unlikely to be able to replace the proprietary data services, it is a valuable tool to have available and can complement the other sources well. In recent years the use of

open source intelligence has grown as more and more people tap in to this source of knowledge. Best of all, anyone can use it and it is free. Making use of the Internet to undertake research on a client may seem like a straight forward task. There are very few people around who are not accustomed to a search engine. However, there are a few basics that should be put in place to ensure a productive process and prevent employees spending a lot of time circling the Internet. Firstly, learn the basics of Internet searching. Whilst search engines do their

best to make searching straight forward, there are some issues. Enter the name of an individual or a term in to a search engine and a number of modification and assumptions are made. In general, this is a good thing and in day to day use may help find what you are looking for. When conducting due diligence this isn’t the best option when the aim isn’t to return as much information as possible, but is to return information that targeted and specific to your needs. Next, define a structured approach that can be use every time there is a need to use the Internet to carry out due diligence. This provides a firm with a replicable process to ensure a consistent approach to their research. The structure also gives a defined framework preventing using the Internet from becoming an open ended consumer of staff time. The simplest way to achieve this it to think about and define your goals before the first search is made. From all the information available, what is it that you are looking for? Any researcher using the Internet must consider the constantly changing nature of the information available. Do

not rely on any information found being available should it need to be found again. Consider how to capture and store anything identified which is relevant to your due diligence. If you are interested to learn more, Darren Hickman is running a seminar at LegalEx. He will be looking at the use of the Internet for due diligence and providing further information on the points raised in this article.
