Dear Editor, Many thanks to Dr Charles Smith for advising Porthcawl Town Council how much to charge users to spend a penny at the newly reopened toilets in John Street. However, Charles neglected to mention that he was one of the six Labour BCBC cabinet members who decided to close the toilets in the first place, compelling the independently controlled town council to take them over. If, as BCBC claimed, it was to save money, why didn’t Charles and his comrades consider such a charge themselves, rather than simply shutting this essential facility, whilst claiming they were dedicated to increasing footfall in John Street? Each time we visit, we are shocked and disappointed by the amount of dog mess on the pavements around the town and along the Promenade. At a time when huge investment is being made in the area and people are being encouraged to visit, this is something that really needs to be addressed by local dog owners and the Council. He insisted on a tunnel being built under Nottage village in order to prevent damage to property from smoke and sparks. The tunnel was cut through the solid rock. It was 63 yards long. At each end there were steel sheets which acted as deflectors. These were supported on girders driven into the rock. This tunnel was used by the GWR (then BR) right up to the closure of the railway by Beeching in 1963”. I hope this helps Mr Lewis. Dear Editor, In response to the letter from Rhyd Lewis of Porthcawl on page 8 of issue 230, I thought I could help in a little way to provide information. 1. I attach a scan of a photo of the tunnel. It is in a book titled ‘Steam in South Wales Volume 3 - Main Line and Docks’. SBN 86093 169 2. Oxford Publishing Co. 2. I attach a screen shot of a map showing the railway going through Nottage. Notice the Halt (Station) top centre of the view. I got this from www.old-maps.co.uk and you can screen shot without having to pay. 3. I reproduce a paragraph from a book titled ‘1825 D.L.P.R. 1861’ by Brynmor James of Kenfig Hill. It concerns the rebuilding of the DLPR into the standard gauge railway. “Before the steam engine was allowed to enter Porthcawl, Rev. Henry Hey Knight insisted on diverting the original line of the tramroad which passed through his garden. Plans of this

Dear Editor, It is clear that BCBC’s proposed regeneration plan for Porthcawl has met with little or no support from residents and while it is claimed that some form of consultation is taking place, it is not clear what form this is taking. It is still the view of the Porthcawl Civic Trust that BCBC needs to call a town meeting so that residents have a genuine opportunity to express their views. However, it is unlikely that BCBC will agree to this proposal, as they will be fully aware that such a form of consultation will result in widespread objections to the plan that has been put forward. Meanwhile, it is important that the youth of the town have their say. In the long term, they are the ones who will benefit from regeneration or, more likely as things stand, will have to suffer the consequences. The Porthcawl Civic Trust has already had one meeting with youth groups and a second meeting is planned. If any youth groups would like to be included in this consultation exercise will they please email porthawlcivictrust@hotmail.co.uk in order to register their interest. Local history MARGERY HOPKIN A.R.R.C. This September witnesses the 80th Anniversary of the outbreak of WW2. During the next five years Porthcawl Museum will be commemorating many aspects of the war. Our journey begins with Margery Hopkin of The Bakery, Newton. Born on 16th April 1917, Margery began her training, as a nurse, at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, qualifying on 28th June 1940. In 1942 she joined the army and was posted to India where, she served at Dinpur in Assam, a hospital close to the frontline where she treated many hundreds of patients in rapidly constructed bamboo huts called ‘bashers.’ Margery, eventually, was posted to Akyab, an island off Southern Burma, where she met Lord Mountbatten. Her final destination was Rangoon, where she had to attend to the prisoners of war whom the Japanese had forced to build the Burma Railway. In 1946, for her bravery and dedication, Margery Hopkin was awarded the Association of the Royal Red Cross by Field Marshal Lord Slim, as King George VI was too unwell. The King, actually, wrote to her regretting that he was not able to present the award, personally. After retiring, she served her community in the Newton Village Bakery and Grocery Shop. THE NEATH ABBEY IRON WORKS IT CHANGED THE WORLD FOREVER The Bridgend and District Local History Society’s speaker this month was Peter Richards from the Friends of the Neath Abbey Iron Company. He gave a talk on the development of the Iron Works in the Clydach Valley from its beginnings in1785 to its closure in 1880. In 1792 the property was leased to George Croker Fox of Falmouth and associates. With their foundry and engineering expertise, they were able to develop the Neath Abbey ironworks from a bulk pig-iron producer to a precision engineering establishment. Peter explained how this Cornish Quaker family ‘never tried to grow large, but were content to develop slowly ‘ . . . ever mindful to turn out work of the best make’. Being Quakers, they were, unlike most iron works, not involved in the production of cannons. Instead Neath Abbey Iron Company were producers of engines, cylinders and other parts for Cornish pumping engines, blowing engines, marine engines, iron hulled ships, locomotives, rails and chairs, rolling mills, machine tools, gas plant, and a great variety of iron castings and forgings. Our next meeting takes place on April 10th at 7.00pm in Carnegie House.

School reports BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE MEET AUSCHWITZ SURVIVOR

45 pupils from Years 10 - 13 visited Krakow over February half term with the Religious Education department. The visit included a powerful meeting with a survivor of Auschwitz who was only a small child when she was imprisoned in the notorious Birkenhau camp. Mrs Lydia Rose was from a communist family and was taken to the children’s barracks at the age of 3. The pupils learnt how difficult life was for Lydia in being separated from her mother at such a young age. The pupils were shown the 6 number tattoo that she was forced to have. As a child she was frightened and lonely in the overcrowded hut and she had to share a bunk with 10 other children. The only clear memory that she has of her mother now is that of her mother’s hands rather than her face as her mother made every effort to get food to her each day and that is what she focused on was the hands that fed her. Lydia told the pupils that she had met the infamous Dr Mengele who the children nicknamed the angel of death because of his many experiments with many of the children there. The pupils then visited Auschwitz the next day and came upon a typical hut that the children would have lived in at that time. The pupils were in awe of meeting one of the last few remaining survivors of the Holocaust and they commented that they would never forget this life changing experience. The pupils showed the utmost respect and maturity throughout this difficult visit and they will go back to Bryntirion and present assemblies to the rest of the school so the 1.1 million lives that were taken at Auschwitz will never be forgotten! COFFEE TIME AT BRYNTEG SCHOOL

Brynteg School is proud to have links with many local businesses and organisations and working together has certainly resulted in providing better opportunities for our pupils. One such partnership is that between the school and Council’s catering team supported by Argie’s Coffee. Over the past few months planning has been undertaken with our School Council and this has resulted in a superb new coffee shop being launched within school for pupils, staff and visitors to use. Argie’s Coffee, which is based in Bridgend, has worked closely with us providing the necessary equipment and the all-important Barista training. This work has resulted in a facility, which really is setting the standard in terms of the quality and range of products and services provided in schools. If you are ever visiting the school, you are more than welcome to join us for a coffee and sample some of the fantastic cakes and other treats that are on offer. This really does demonstrate what can be achieved when you work together!

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL On Friday 8th March a few of our pupils were invited to the Porthcawl Fairtrade breakfast in Trinity Church. It was a wonderful opportunity to share ideas for Fairtrade events with Nottage Primary School and members of the community. We have been fortunate to have another visit recently from past pupil Dan Pugh-Bevan, a past Organ Scholar at St Peter’s College Oxford, who now works as their School’s Liaison Officer. He worked with sixth formers and pupils from Years 9-11 using a portal called Oxplore, designed to stretch the minds of young people. ‘I was delighted to be provided with another opportunity to return to Porthcawl Comprehensive School. This school provided me with a wealth of opportunities both academic and cocurricular that have set me up for life.’ We have just held our Annual Awards Evening, which recognised the achievements and successes of pupils from 2017-18 academic year. As well as honours and academic success being celebrated, equally important were the copious awards given for effort and progress across the school to our hardworking pupils. The evening was extremely well attended by parents and pupils, and it is always a joy to celebrate so many individual triumphs. THE BRIDGE Love was in the air, just after Valentine’s Day one of our longterm members of staff; Mrs Bowen (now Mrs Roberts) got married. We wish them a long and happy life together. On World Book Day pupils and staff at The Bridge dressed up as their favourite book character. The Cat In The Hat, Harry Potter and Roald Dahl to name a few books and authors. Our very own Mr Kingscott dressed up as a hippy poet. Back at Forest Schools, KS2 have been making rafts and testing them in the pond to see if they would float. They all succeeded. KS 3 Forest School skills included cutting firewood and building a den without using rope. Following our Spring Term theme, Castles and Kingdoms, KS3 pupils will all be visiting Caerphilly Castle. Some pupils have been making a large paper and glue model of Caerphilly Castle. Glue everywhere!! As part of our Gold Rights Respecting School journey pupils have been looking at Global Goals. We had a tutor time and assembly time around these important matters. Finally KS4 have started their Art GCSEs so we wish them all good luck and hope they do well. Ashley, Harlie, Kia, Ellie

AFON Y FELIN PRIMARY NEWS This spring term has been non-stop since we’ve come back after Christmas. First of all, we were given incredible news that we had achieved the Green school status in the Welsh Government School Categorisation System. This has been awarded for the quality that is seen in leadership, teaching and learning and also data. This achievement couldn’t have been possible without the leadership and vision of our Head teacher, Ms Nicola Williams, as well as the dedication of teaching and support staff of the school, and especially our fantastic pupils who always show dedication and positivity when it comes to their learning. Since the big news, our children have shown their Welsh spirit in the school Eisteddfod where they’ve showcased their wonderful Welsh themed arts and crafts, as well as poem recitals, music and dance. The fun did not stop there as the children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about ethical values during Fairtrade week, learning about many different countries during their International days and have had a great time dressing up as their favourite characters during World Book Day. School reports NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

We have had a wonderful few weeks in Newton. One of the highlights this term was dressing up as our favourite book characters for World Book Day, the staff enjoyed this as much as the children when they dressed up as characters from Alice in Wonderland. We are proud of our team spirit in Newton and believe that children learn best when they are happy. The children have been busy cooking pancakes and baking Welsh Cakes. All were delicious; we definitely have some future Master Chefs at Newton! St David’s Day was a wonderful celebration of being Welsh, we sang songs, read stories and shared arts and crafts, which our children and families had created together. A big well done to our talented musicians who performed during our Eisteddfod. Our nursery afternoon was very well attended; it was lovely to meet so many new families. ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH This year our school sees more students taking part in the Eisteddfod yr Urdd than ever before. They have enjoyed competing in the Welsh second language poetry recital as well as various Musical items. We wish them all ‘Pob Lwc!’ and have our fingers crossed that many will qualify for the next stage. I am thrilled to announce that one of our young carers has been elected a member of the Welsh Young Carers Council and had the opportunity to visit the Senedd last month. It was an incredibly enriching experience and I am very proud to have a member of the council amongst our school community. ‘’On the first weekend of half term, Years 7 and 8 boys made the short trip to Dublin for the third Archbishop McGrath Rugby Tour. The boys were supported by our Sport Ambassadors from the 6th Form, who did a fantastic job in helping to organise the teams and look after the younger pupils over the weekend. Both teams played entertaining running rugby and coaches were impressed by the team spirit and sportsmanship. The boys followed up those matches by cheering on the Welsh team to victory against England with the locals. The boys toured the magnificent Aviva Stadium and they even got to sit in changing rooms of the home side giving them an insight into the life of elite level sports stars on match days! The boys were a credit to the school and their families, flying the flag for Sport at Archbishop McGrath. Well done boys, we are proud of you!’’ Angela Keller, Head Teacher

School reports PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS

Talented artists Joel, Zak, Hattie, Maisie, Aleisha, Elsie, Callum, Lili, Harley, Casey, Ocean, Regan and Layla were lucky enough to spend time working with local artists Mel and Keith. The children worked together to paint their favourite things about Porthcawl. They wanted the finished piece of artwork to look fun, vibrant and interesting – just like our beautiful town. It now has pride of place in the foyer. Other children have worked with Keep Wales Tidy, Porthcawl Town Council, Surfers against Sewage and Seaquest on the ‘Porthcawl – Love It Don’t Trash It Campaign’. Children have carried out a litter survey and beach clean and were appalled by the amount of plastic waste. The children are proud of our town and want to keep it looking its best; they have designed litter prevention posters and leaflets, which should soon be available around Porthcawl. As we near the end of another exciting and busy term, I must mention how delighted we were when Porthcawl Male Voice Choir visited. We loved listening to them and joining in with some of the Welsh songs. We are a small, friendly, family - focused primary school set in huge grounds. We prioritise wellbeing and have excellent standards. We are proud to be a Welsh Government Green Category School for the fourth year running. NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS We have had an incredibly busy few weeks and last week was no exception! The school took part in a week-long celebration of Wales, starting with a full day of competitions and festivities on Monday to mark St David’s day. We all took part in writing poetry, creating pieces of art, recitations and even cake making. We were proud to name our Bard in Y5 for an outstanding piece of writing about Wales. On Tuesday we welcomed a theatre production depicting welsh history which was brilliant and on Wednesday we combined a warm welsh welcome to our parents and a Fair trade coffee morning, where the winning poems were shared, our eco-committee spoke to parents about litter in the local area and our choir sang welsh songs about healthy eating. On Friday we celebrated World book day, with children and staff wearing pyjamas and reading favourite stories. On Friday morning, two pupils attended Porthcawl’s Fairtrade breakfast in Trinity Church along with pupils from Porthcawl Comprehensive and made plans to collaborate further to promote Fair trade in Porthcawl. Then to finish our exciting week Celtic dancers from Cornwall had us dancing and learning about Celtic traditions, we were amazed how similar the Welsh and Cornish language can be. CYNFFIG NEWS We are extremely pleased and proud to announce that Cynffig pupil Josef Gray has won ‘The Dunraven Welsh Singer of the Year’. The final held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama was a prestigious event with finalists competing from across South Wales. Joe who competed in the 15 to 18 category impressed all who attended with the adjudicator describing his singing as natural, encompassing the style and character of each song. Josef who is studying GCSE Music first learned to sing when he joined the Youth Choirs Da Capo and Crescendo under the direction of Katheryn Blight. A member of our school choir and school band Joe is currently working towards his grade 6 singing Musical Theatre and Grade 7 singing Classical. Congratulations Joe on an outstanding achievement! Our girls celebrated International Women’s Day in style with Years 11 and 12 attending a World of Work event at CGI Bridgend and Year 9 attending a Girls in Construction conference at the University of Wales Trinity St David. Local news OPEN PORTHCAWL POLICE STATION This week, Porthcawl Town Council voted to support a petition signed by more than 600 people calling for the front counter at the police station to be re-opened and for extra officers to be stationed there. At the moment, Porthcawl is policed by a sergeant, three constables and six PCSO’s. The council also heard that the police precept was being increased, adding another £24 a year to what people already pay. Coun Sean Aspey said that council taxpayers in Porthcawl would contribute £1.7 million to South Wales Police this year. The council will now write to the police commissioner backing the campaign. Our police do a difficult and valuable job. Even so – and Coun Aspey’s figures have to be confirmed – this sounds like a lot of money for what’s visible to Porthcawl residents. Of course, policing is not just about the visible – the bobby on the beat - but many other back office functions. However, the police commissioner is supposed to consider local people’s priorities for policing. ON YOUR MARKS FOR THE PORTHCAWL 10K Porthcawl is set for another showcase as a visitor destination thanks to the new 10k run planned for the town. With thousands of people expected to take part on Sunday 7 July, the route has been carefully planned by organisers Run 4 Wales, sponsors Healthspan and double-Olympic marathon runner Steve Brace to ensure it can show off the best of Porthcawl. The run will begin outside the historic Grand Pavilion and take in the likes of Newton, Trecco and Sandy Bay before looping through John Street and out towards Rest Bay and back, ending with a sprint finish along the promenade. With live music and other entertainment, the event will have a festival atmosphere and is expected to draw large crowds of spectators and supporters. This is a major coup for the town, and follows the success of events such as the Senior Open Golf Championship or the Elvis Festival. As well as supporting local businesses and tourism, the Healthspan Porthcawl 10k will help to raise money for numerous good causes, so there will be a real feel-good factor about the event. WATER SPORTS CENTRE IN THE FINAL STAGE Final discussions are underway with applicants who have submitted bids for the café, kiosk and sport facilities at Rest Bay’s all-new Water Sports Centre. With work on the new centre making great progress, Bridgend County Borough Council is preparing to announce who the new tenants will be. Expected to be open this summer, it is being built using £1.5m of EU funding via the Welsh Government’s new Tourism Attractor Destination programme, which has been launched by Visit Wales to create 13 must-see tourist destinations. It will provide a base for local water sports groups and clubs as well as offering a café/bistro upstairs, an ice cream kiosk downstairs, and toilet facilities, showers, changing cubicles, a function room and more. As part of the work, a new pedestrian crossing is being installed to establish a safer link with the famous Blue Flag-winning beach. Rest Bay offers one of the finest backdrops in the UK. With a design that incorporates solar technology, a covered area for dog walkers and glazed panels to make the most out of the stunning coastal views, the new centre is going to be fully accessible as it welcomes visitors to Rest Bay from other parts of South Wales - and beyond. 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF NATO In my position as President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, one of my key aims is to educate citizens of NATO members about the alliance’s purpose and its importance going into the future. Seventy years ago this month, on the 4th April 1949, the UK signed the North Atlantic Treaty with eleven other founding members. NATO was founded to serve three broad purposes: to prevent the re-emergence of a military threat from Germany; to address the threat of an expansionist Soviet Union; and to encourage European political integration in order to maintain peace on the continent. Now expanded to twenty-nine states, with North Macedonia to become the 30th, the specific priorities of NATO have changed, but we are still committed to “promote stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area” by peaceful means. The counterpoint of this is the requirement of nations “to maintain and develop their individual and collective capacity to resist armed attack”keeping the peace requires defensive capability. We live in a time of global flux, and while international organisations can seem remote from the concerns of people in their day-to-day lives, the shared responsibility and stability provided by NATO keeps the UK secure. Club features BRIDGEND CHILDREN’S CHARITY COULD CLOSE

The Contact Zone in Bridgend, a charity for children from separated families, will close without further funding. Established in 2014, The Contact Zone has helped hundreds of children make memories with the parents they no longer live with. Each Saturday children and parents meet at Nolton Church Hall, where a safe and non-judgmental environment is provided without fear of conflict. Twenty-five volunteers and a part-time manager ensure that families get to meet in the strictest of confidence, allowing children to paint, play or simply share a bag of sweets with a loved one they don’t often see. Louise, a parent who regularly attends the centre with her children, said, “Andrea and her team at the Contact Centre have supported my children and specifically my eldest through a difficult transition. My son was given control over the situation and subsequently made decisions for himself. The centre’s determination to be a child focused and safe environment has helped my children to begin to rebuild their relationship with their father. “If the centre closed, it would cause major disruption to my family. It would mean starting again, having to find a new centre where we must travel, resettling the children and rebuilding trust with staff and my children’s father. This is a risk and I fear that my son’s anxiety may return. We need to help this centre to continue to carry out the excellent job that they do.” With costs of more than £1,000 each month the charity is struggling to find further funding and is asking businesses who are keen to support local charities to get in touch. Andrea Thomas, Manager at The Contact Zone said, “It would be devastating if our charity closed on its 5th birthday. We would no longer be able to provide children with that opportunity to spend quality time with their parents. Children would need to travel further afield or risk not having an opportunity to meet with their parents at all. We urge businesses to get in touch if they feel they can support us in any way. STROKE CLUB - LIONS PRESENTATION An excellent presentation was given to the Porthcawl Stroke Club by Mr David Richards, a member of the Lyons, who give us an insight to what it was like working for the Metropolitan Police force from 1959 -1989. David was a young man who originated from Nantymoel, who gained a high prestigious position by working hard through the ranks. He told us tales of Soho, the Miner’s Strike, Trained recruits at Hendon, worked at Croydon and was involved with the organisational safety procedures for the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, also Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. David was awarded the MBE by the Queen, which is a great honour. The presentation was very interesting and informative, even funny at times; especially when he changed into his Policeman’s uniform. However, you can imagine how the Miner’s Strike went down with his Dad and Uncle’s being Miner’s! OMG there must have been some heated debates over that one. David has been a regular supporter of the Porthcawl Stroke Club and has brightened up our days on several occasions, by giving talks and playing the piano, which he plays brilliantly. The members would like to express their gratitude to David for giving his time freely and making his visit enjoyable. PORTHCAWL ROTARY CLUB INTERNATIONAL EVENING

Porthcawl Rotary Club recently held its annual International evening at the Hi Tide, when once again invited students from the Atlantic College at St Donat’s came to share an evening of music, food and culture. Nine International students and over 140 guests were welcomed by President Denzil Gould. Entertainment was provided by harpist Stephanie Chick accompanied by her father Rotarian Rob Chick. Their programme included a selection of Welsh music.

This year, the Rotary Club is pleased to report that proceeds from the International evening will be donated to the Mercy Ships, a unique charity formed in 1978 by Don Stephens to support communities hit by disaster. The charity runs a ferry converted as a hospital ship from which 400 volunteers live and work on-board providing medical facilities in 57 developing countries and hold clinics and training for local health professionals. TRINITY CHURCH There has been a change of our Sunday morning Service time since the beginning of March. We will be holding our service at 10.30 instead of 11 am. This is to allow more time for fellowship and coffee/tea after the Service. We hope this will enable all members, particularly newcomers, to get to know each other better. Our GAP social group enjoyed celebrating Burn’s night at the Hi Tide as their January event. We will be watching the comedy murder mystery at the Grand Pavilion in March and attending the 60s night in May. We have plenty of ideas for the future including days out so please consult Trinity or our website. Churches Together in Porthcawl are holding special Lent meetings every Wednesday at 7pm. The last one will be held at our church on 10th April. It will focus on the Mystery of Love and sacrifice. Messy Church continues on the 3rd Sunday of the month between 2 and 4pm with children under 10 enjoying activities including painting, arts and crafts, games, stories and songs. All are welcome to attend this free activity. The February session was based on the theme of love and the March session on “Caring for Mother Earth.” We are delighted to welcome visitors and new members to our church. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT Sewing Group – yet another new group is using the Talbot as their meeting place. They started earlier last month, (Tuesday, 5th March 2019) and will be meeting every fortnight thereafter. Club features PORTHCAWL U3A IS SINGING IN THE RAIN

Last month’s Annual General Meeting of Porthcawl U3A was quite special: the well attended gathering was treated to a delightful musical performance by its own Ukulele Group, beginning - appropriately enough - with Singing in the Rain, which got so many feet tapping! It was reported that membership was flourishing, with new interest groups such as Karaoke and Mindfulness & Meditation attracting new members, thereby making this U3A one of the biggest and most active in the country. Our monthly talk proved popular with new U3A member Ceri Joseph of the Porthcawl Museum enlightening us about Dic Penderyn. Some members enjoyed an evening concert at St David’s Hall in Cardiff, whilst the Sunday Lunch Club dined at the Green Acres, Cornelly. We’ve much to look forward to. On 17 April we’ve a Spring Lunch at the Hi Tide with a jazz trio providing entertainment, plus a host of theatre and concert visits, coffee mornings, lunches, and outings. As well, of course, as over 40 interest/activity groups holding daytime meets in easily accessible venues across Porthcawl. OPENING UP ST THEODORE’S TO THE FUTURE

Work is underway to transform the interior of St Theodore’s, the Parish Church of Kenfig Hill. This will give the building the flexibility to host a variety of community events and activities. The improvements being carried out at St Theodore’s will include a new under floor heating system, floor, storage, enhanced lighting scheme, sound system and kitchen. The old pews, which were uncomfortable and very difficult to move, are being replaced with chairs of quality. The parish of Kenfig Hill has been fortunate in securing a number of grants, as well as using its own resources, to fund the project. However we are giving individuals and organisations the opportunity to sponsor a chair, sponsoring a chair is a very practical way you can help the parish. A chair may be sponsored for £150, and can be dedicated to the memory of a loved one, or to commemorate a special occasion. However donations of any size will be gratefully accepted. This month Porthcawl Lions welcomed a new member when Anne became the twelfth woman to join the club. All members wish her well and hope she enjoys a long and happy time as a Lion. Porthcawl Lions is always looking to help the local community so was pleased, this month, to make a donation to the National Coastwatch Institution which works with the local lifeguards, HM Coastguard and RNLI to keep all those using the local waters safe. Unfortunately there will not be a May Fayre this year as the club felt that after more than twenty years it is time to let it rest. However, the Vintage Fair will be bigger and better than ever and, of course, the car boot sales start again in May at Porthcawl Rugby Club. Of course members are always busy thinking of new ways to raise money and the more members the greater the variety of ideas and the easier they are to execute, so if you are thinking Porthcawl Lions might be for you visit #LionsGetInvolved

BRIDGEND LIONS’ PRESENTATION TO YOUNG CARERS

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL

516 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during February. We monitored 5 incidents and dealt with a further 5 logged incidents involving a danger to navigation, missing persons and concerns for a possible vessel on fire. This reflects a 50% increase on the same period last year, with the new CCTV cameras being used 4 times in support of such incidents. At the time of writing we continue to be one of the busiest stations in the UK for the number of incidents handled. We logged and monitored 117 commercial vessels, 171 leisure vessels, 2 military and 29 others. In March, “Storm Freya” hit the coast, with striking images being captured by many photographers and videographers. These featured in the national press and television reports, making us one of the most-photographed NCI stations in the UK. Recently, “Storm Gareth” arrived. We also received a visit from Ruth Wignall and the ITV Weather team who did a live broadcast from the tower and captured the early elements of the storm. From April 1st our hours will extend from 0900hrs to 2000hrs daily. In due course this will further extend until 2100hrs, maintaining our ethos of “Eyes Along The Coast”. BRIDGEND RAMBLERS’ NEW WALKS PROGRAMME

A cheque in the sum of £500.00 was presented by the President of Bridgend Lions Club, Lion Tony Gates to Victoria Bailey – Project Leader of Young Carers aged 8 – 11 year olds. The presentation took place at the Compassion Church, Nolton Street on Monday, March 4, which Victoria was delighted to accept on behalf of the youngsters who were treated to a Bristol Zoo trip. Bridgend Ramblers have published their walks programme covering April through September 2019. We offer three walks very Sunday: a long walk of about 10 to 12 miles, a medium walk of about 8 to 10 miles and a short walk of 4 to 6 miles. Our Tuesday 10-mile walks continue and our fortnightly Thursday strolls of about 3 miles are going from strength to strength. As this is our Spring/Summer programme we also have included fortnightly Wednesday evening walks of about 5 miles. In addition to all that we have also now introduced Wednesday morning walks of about 5 miles interspersed with the Thursday programme. This gives us a total 139 walks covering the sixmonth period – not to forget to mention the two Saturday coach trips, which this year will be to the Elan Valley and Stratford upon Avon, each with a 5-mile walk. In addition to the variety of distances and difficulties these walks take place all over South Wales taking in our coastal, woodland and hillside locations. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I am divorcing my husband and am upset to hear from my solicitor that his behaviour during our marriage is likely to be disregarded when it comes to our financial settlement. He had an affair and left me for another woman. Is this correct as it seems so unfair? Answer: – I often hear this complaint from clients who when filing for Divorce on adultery or behaviour, think that “bad behaviour” will lead to a more favourable financial settlement. The reality is that this is rarely the case. It is a common misconception. In reality, the reasons for the Divorce are usually irrelevant to the Court and will not influence the outcome of a financial settlement. The Court must adhere to the rules and statutory criteria set out in the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. I understand that this can be a bitter pill to swallow for many clients and I sympathise with you. However, the fact that your husband has had an affair will not be a consideration of a Judge if you make an application to the Court. Generally, conduct in a relationship will only be taken into account if it is so bad that it should not be ignored and would be classed as “gross or obscene”. Such examples of behaviour that might be taken into account are the sexual abuse of a child of the family or significant financial loss by one spouse as a result of extreme financial irresponsibility of the other spouse for example, serious ongoing gambling. However, as a matter of policy, it is generally accepted that if conduct were to be relevant to a financial entitlement, this would lead to long and expensive Court cases where divorcing couples would compete with each other to prove who was responsible for the breakdown of the relationship. WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A WILL IN PLACE AND CONSIDER INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE.

Having a Will ensures your estate is distributed according to your instructions and wishes. If you die without having made a Will, your assets are automatically distributed according to the Rules of Intestacy. This may well have undesired consequences. When making a Will, you should firstly consider who your executors will be. These are the people you trust to administer your estate according to your will. You should next consider who you want to benefit from your estate. Your spouse or partner is typically the first beneficiary, other beneficiaries may include children, relatives, friends, charities. Your Will can name classes of beneficiary (eg all your grandchildren). Gifts can be put in trust rather than made outright. For example, you might use a trust to control assets that are being passed to children (or young adults) or to individuals who are incapable of looking after their own financial affairs. When preparing a Will, we always consider the Inheritance Tax position of your estate. Inheritance Tax (IHT) is chargeable on your estate if it exceeds the IHT nil rate band (NRB) (currently £325,000). If you leave your residence to your children, you can claim an additional £150,000 (As of April 2019) known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB). Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on the value of your estate in excess of the nil rate sum. Effective planning can substantially reduce the amount of tax that will be payable on your estate. If your estate is likely to exceed the nil rate sum, it is worth discussing how family trusts and other planning options could benefit you. If your estate is valued at less than the nil rate band, IHT is not payable. Equally IHT is not payable on any inheritance you leave to your spouse. In addition, if your own estate does not use up the full nil rate sum, then your spouse’s tax free allowance on their death will be proportionately increased. Other IHT reliefs include reduced IHT on some business assets. The tax treatment of family trusts is complex and depends on the type of family trust being used. While gifts and family trusts can reduce the value of your estate (and consequently any IHT liability), always remember to retain enough for your own financial needs. AVOIDING ACCIDENTAL INHERITANCES When you make a will, you may think that you have all eventualities covered, but by failing to check your pension policy and particularly the names of those you nominated as beneficiaries when you set up the pension, you are leaving yourself open to leaving a sum of money to someone you may not want to. Since 2015, it has been possible to pass on any unused pension money tax free. These days, most pensions are written into trust which means that they fall out of your estate when you die, and so may not pass to people you have named in your will. When you place your pension pot or an insurance policy into trust, you have to name a beneficiary to receive that fund. If you name your Partner for example, then separate at a later date and change your will to leave assets to your children, you may still find that your Partner would receive your pension monies. Therefore it is prudent to check your policy and the identity of your chosen beneficiary. With the rise in the number of divorces, family structures are getting more complicated and so people are increasingly at risk of losing track of their pension and insurance plans, and of who will inherit them. It seems that anyone recently married, divorce, separated, bereaved or widowed is at risk of leaving an accidental legacy. Further, if your pension is not written into trust, it could form part of your estate and could be liable for inheritance tax. If this is the case, the money cannot be released until the tax is paid and the estate wound up. LALESTON WI We met on 7th March. Various items of interest were brought to the attention of members from the County Letter. We were hoping to have a visit to The Mansion House Cardiff for a tour and afternoon tea sometime in September. Names were taken of members wishing to attend The Council Meeting in Port Talbot on 30th April. Luncheon Club was to be at The Bear Hotel Cowbridge on 19th March. Our speaker for the evening, Mr Howard Lewis, was then introduced and gave a very interesting talk on Quarella Stone, which had been quarried locally and of which Laleston Church was built a vote of thanks was given by Elaine Jones. We had a change of speaker for our February meeting as the lady due to tell us about Agatha Christie was unable to come but we had an excellent replacement in Yvonne Rees telling us of the time “I went to a Greek island wedding”. What an interesting and amusing speaker she was. The island was Kerkira better known to us as Corfu and she also visited another more primitive island where hair wash and bathing was helped with a watering can! Names were collected for our National AGM in Cheltenham this year so a coach will be arranged. We enjoyed our 65th Birthday lunch at the Grove and spent time browsing through old photo albums of past guild activities. Happy memories! This months meeting is on April 10th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Dean Powell will tell us about the life of Glyn Houston. That should bring back memories of old films. Do come and be reminded! Laleston Mothers’ Union held their annual Pancake afternoon on Shrove Tuesday. It was held in Laleston Gardening Club. The members would like to thank the community for their support. We are a small group of 14 members. We meet regularly with other groups from other parishes, as we are part of a worldwide membership with over 4million members in 84 different countries. Members work as volunteers in local communities putting their faith into action giving individuals in need a helping hand. Our grateful thanks to our recently retired leader Ann who kept this small band active, and welcome to Frances our new leader who has experience and enthusiasm to follow on where Ann has left off. We had a good turn out of members. Meeting chaired by Christine, minuets read out by Katherine WI business read out by Enid. We discussed where and when we are going on our spring trip, with our summer and autumn trips yet to be organised. The summer Show by Federation House was discussed and our craft section will be submitting an entry for one of the classes. Our speaker this month was Sylvia Bird her topic was Decorated eggs and jewellery, the eggs she showed us were amazing, ostrich, emu, geese and chicken, every egg can be used except swans they belong to the queen. They would have given Faberge a run for their money. The jewellery was equally good, the examples she showed were of every colour and texture you could imagine several of the members purchased necklaces and eggs. All agreed she was a very talented lady. Our speakers next month is Emlyn Williams topic UFO in Swansea which should be interesting call in and listen with us tea and biscuits all round. I hope we are all in Porthcawl group, looking forward to adopting some of the new ideas being discussed for our fun and friendship this year. The birthday party, commemorating the start of the Porthcawl group IW, was very enjoyable. Live music got us all singing. We thank Carol our president and all her helpers for this special night. We have had two very good speakers at our latest meetings. Pat Richards gave a good talk on the history of tea, its many origins and rituals. We were also treated to a wealth of information, by Catherine Lowry, the clinical manager, on the work of the Angleton mental health assessment unit in Glanrhyd. The conditions and treatments have vastly improved during the more than 50 years since I worked there. Looking forward we have our Great Britain and Northern Ireland IW conference in Cardiff early this month. It is held over three days and will have good interesting speakers as well as information pertaining to the charities we at I.W. support, as well as news from other groups all around the world. On Wednesday 6th. March our WI gathering included a celebration of ‘St. David’s Day’. The GFWI business part of the meeting was attended to first; with birthday announcements etc. also plans are in place for our Educational Trip in May. We then celebrated in style with bowls of delicious leak and potato soup, French bread with butter, followed by Welsh cakes and beverages, delightful. The evening ended with a quiz and a hilarious poem, read by Marilyn. It was a really fun evening. Special thanks to Jennifer for making the soup and to all who baked the Welsh cakes. We held the annual ‘Pancake Day’ on Monday 4th. March. Once again Anna and Shirley were nominated as cooks for the morning, making delightful pancakes, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The winner this year at tossing the pancake competition was Malen Jones, the wooden spoon going to Jill George, the morning concluded on a very happy note. We look forward to our next meeting on Wednesday 3rd. April, at 7pm, which will be held at Newton Institute instead of our usual venue. M Freeman

Business & finance THE REAL ALTERNATIVE TO SVR SVR, for those who don’t know, stands for the Standard Variable Rate, which all lenders use as their default mortgage interest rate. HOW MUCH LIFE ASSURANCE SHOULD I HAVE? Some would say as much as you can afford and others none at all. We get many varied responses when raising the topic with clients ranging from ‘I don’t plan to die yet’ or ‘god will provide’ but mostly ‘I can’t afford it’ even without knowing the cost! If you’re single and have no financial obligations then you probably don’t need life assurance but if you’re married with children and have a mortgage then as your responsibilities increase so does your need for protection. Covering your mortgage is simple, you can buy a ‘mortgage protection’ plan that’s exactly the same amount as you’ve borrowed but insuring your life for loss of income to your wife & kids is a little more tricky. There is however a ‘family income benefit’ plan which is as cheap as chips and does what it says, i.e. replace lost income for as long as you want it for. Example, a 30 year old can insure for £20,000 per annum for 20 years for as little as £10.00 per month, (ring for your own quote 01656 772222). Clients don’t like to be told they’re being irresponsible or reckless not having cover when sometimes it’s obvious they do need it, so you have to be very diplomatic in how you advise them or you turn them off totally and they won’t think about it again until someone near to them has a near fatal accident or similar event. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUBÂ

With the annual plant sale fund raising event less than a month away we are all very busy! This year the sale is being held on Saturday 4th of May from 10 am. The plants on offer this year include a wide range of bedding, vegetables and perennials as well as the usual tea, coffee and a wonderful range of cakes. Fingers crossed for fine weather!Â Last autumn some of our members donated lots of narcissi bulbs that they had â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;freeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with plant deliveries. These were duly planted up and a previously dull and ivy ridden area is now bright and cheerful. The area has also been planted with geraniums so, by the summer, we hope that there will be even more colour. A resounding â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;well doneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; to everyone involved including Mary who took on this project.Â In our gardens at this time of the year the weather can swing quite dramatically between warm sunshine, freezing cold and drenching wet! Health & wellbeing PROPOSED NEW TEMPLE Our temple ‘Sanghapadipa’ is in the process of relocating to Swansea. Planning permission has been granted and we are steps closer to the move. Located in a former wedding venue, the new temple is surrounded by trees and has a lovely garden. The temple will be home for our three resident monks and visitors. Pim and Mark Morgan have worked tirelessly to arrive at this stage of the project. One of the intentions of the temple is that its foundation is based on the act of freely giving. There is no charge for attendance, meditation days or charity days. All materials, talks, tuition and guidance are based on mutual generosity and fosters wellbeing. The lay members support the temple in many ways; the monks provide meditation and the conditions for a wholesome and stable mind. This perfection and practice of generosity ensures that Buddhism is beautiful and a true reflection of our best human qualities. Arts & music COR BRO OGWR AT CARNEGIE HOUSE

Something different took place at Carnegie house, Bridgend, this half term, attracting nearly 400 visitors. It was a photographic exhibition led by Natalie Murphy, President of Bridgend and District Local History Society, who invited Cor Bro Ogwr to display its own history. The Choir formed in 1998, after a successful Bridgend Eisteddfod, when Mr. John Elfed Jones and Mr. Alun John wondered what could be done to leave a legacy. Choristers were asked for memorabilia and photos, sorted by committee members Ann and Jeff Heatley. Photos from concerts, trips abroad, concert programmes and press releases were displayed to the accompaniment of choir cds and dvds. Our President, Carwyn Jones, opened the exhibition. Visitors were surprised to see the range and number of concerts performed. Also evident was the fun experienced during trips away, social and fund raising events! A Macmillan collection box raised £117.45, donated in memory of the late Mike Stokes, a longtime supporter of the History Society. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

I went to the cinema the other day, which, you might think, is not a surprising thing for a filmmaker to do, but actually I have not been to watch a film on the big screen for some considerable time. I confess I am not especially keen on digital projection. But Ian Parsons runs a Film Club and on 1st March he put on a showing of “Only Two Can Play” in a small cinema at the Grand Theatre, Swansea, and I felt it was an opportunity that could not be missed. I went along with fellow film producer Carl Richards, who lives in Mumbles, and we watched the 1962 black & white screen adaptation of Kingsley Amis’s novel “That Uncertain Feeling” which is set in the fictitious South Wales town of Aberdarcy based, as it happens, on Swansea. It starred Peter Sellers, Mai Zetterling and Virginia Maskell, and, even though there was an adult theme to the story, it showed how skilfully the tale of an attempted love affair could be portrayed with taste, humour and an understated irony – sadly qualities that are not too much in evidence in today’s world. Local Band Last Flight To Pluto signs record deal! Bridgend/Porthcawl-based prog rock outfit Last Flight To Pluto has signed a record deal with White Knight Records. The group has just released its second album, “A Drop in the Ocean”, to rave reviews. The new promo video “Coverland” tells the story of their former days and dislike of playing covers on the deadend pub circuit, hence writing their own material and now rewarded by playing big venues like London’s Islington Academy. The other five songs in the album that feature alongside “Coverland” are “Masheena”, “Time and Love”, “The Kings are Dead”, “Morning Glow” and “Super Girl”. Pluto is made up of vocalist Alice Freya, bassist Lewis Kreft, guitarists Jack Parry and Ryan Alexander and drummer Daz Joseph. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our 2019 Malcolm Nugent Portfolio Competition. Each member could enter a set of four prints or digital images into the competition, one from each of the following genres: Abstract or Still Life, Landscape, Nature and People with 17 members entering. Dennis Russ from Swansea skillfully judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each of the 68 entries. Congratulations to Richard Craze who was the overall winner with 4 excellent prints scoring a maximum of 80 points. CÔR DYSGWYR PORTHCAWL – PORTHCAWL WELSH LEARNERS’ CHOIR Our choir has recently received several invitations to perform at various venues in the coming months. The first concert of the year took place on Saint David’s Day at Middleton Court, Porthcawl. The audience was very receptive and happy to join in with the popular Welsh folk songs and hymns. One member performed a solo and there was an item by the hand bell ringers. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the concert and the excellent buffet that followed. We have received invitations to a ‘Noson Lawen’ evening in April and during the Urdd Eisteddfod Week at Cardiff Bay in May we will sing in the Pierhead Building. After the sad loss of one of our members last year, we are making arrangements for a concert in Porthcawl during the summer as a tribute to Jacqueline Graham. The proceeds of the concert will be donated to a charity that she supported. We extend a warm welcome to all who enjoy a varied programme of Welsh music. REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB - JUNIORS

We’d like to introduce you to, Meg McCloy and Jamie Harrowing, Rest Bay Lifeguard Club’s new junior captains! Both Meg and Jamie are long standing members of the club and are already very active in the junior section, having been involved in organising training sessions and other activities for the younger members. They are excellent role models and their selection as junior captains is thoroughly well deserved. Meg has been a member of Rest Bay she was six years old and says, “I’m super excited to be the female captain of Rest Bay Lifeguard Club junior section. I hope as a club we will have great fun in the sea, the pool and on the beach, and most importantly stay safe”. Jamie added, “I’m really happy to have been selected as one of this year’s junior captains. I’m looking forward to a fun year and seeing the improvements in our performances, especially the new nipper juniors, as they become part of our junior section. I can’t wait to get back in the sea for the start of the summer season in the coming months”. The junior coaches wish Meg and Jamie good luck as they take on their new roles. Also, a BIG thank you to Erin Richards and Lewys Williams, the former captains, for all their hard work.

Porthcawl Runners have recruited their latest batch of Couch to 5k recruits. The new bumper 25-strong group began their nine-week programme last month, under the watchful eye of coach Lucy Jones, and are due to graduate at Porthcawl parkrun on May 11. Before that though, the club will this month celebrate its catalogue of achievements and top performers over the last 12 months at their AGM and awards night. That bash at the Fairways Hotel comes shortly after a separate club social and introduction to nutrition for running evening at Porthcawl RFC with ‘endurance physio’ Mike James giving a talk and tips to members about fuelling and hydration. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to suicide prevention charity Papyrus. The Runners have also been on the road again, running a coach to Llanelli parkrun and following up on successful outings to Barry Island and Newport last year. A big shout out to Stephane Ollivier, who cycled from Cardiff all the way to Paris with wife Janet in order to raise money for Ty Hafan, as well as Mark James – who faced his fear of flying for his latest fundraising efforts for Cancer Research UK. Our clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nipper section (Age 8-13) has over 80 children. As a Nipper your child will be taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills, surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, boardpaddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays).

We need your help on a match day! Ever considered volunteering? Whether you're a current player, someone who has hung up their boots or a person who has never picked up the oval ball, you could be a valued rugby volunteer. During winter we also run lifesaving training sessions at local pools. We also take part in the various competitions in which teams and individuals can participate â&#x20AC;&#x201C; However no child is forced to compete. The children also work towards various national surf safety awards, which include both sports and lifesaving elements.
