5G IN PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, What Is 5G? The (EMF) electromagnetic field spectrum is the range of all types of electromagnetic radiation. Radiation is energy that travels through air – the visible light that comes from a lamp, the radio waves that come from a radio station and a microwave that cooks your food are all electromagnetic radiation. The types of electromagnetic radiation that make up the electromagnetic field spectrum are Radio, visible light, microwave, infrared, ultraviolet, x-ray and Gamma ray. 5G stands for 5th Generation Wi-Fi, we are currently using 4G and 3G. All Wi-Fi is electromagnetic radiation. Wi-Fi today is in the Radio/microwave part of the spectrum and is most commonly used in our Wi-Fi and mobile phones at 2.4GHz; 2.4GHz is very harmful to human DNA, in-fact the most damaging Radio/microwave radiation to human DNA. A frequency of 2.2GHZ or 2.6GHz would have been a much healthier choice. 5G is something very different, it was designed in WW2 as a weapon that was used on the battlefield in WW2 and the concentration camps as a surveillance kill grid. As it covers the full spectrum of electromagnetic field radiation, Radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-ray and Gamma ray it can transmit and receive massive amounts of electromagnetic radiation, travel at the speed of sound or light, travel through anything or not, be visible or not. Totally controllable across the whole spectrum, Unfortunately it can damage anything it touches or not. In order for 5G to be effective it has to have massive power supply to large transmitter/receivers that will be strategically placed in a grid, then smaller units on every lamppost with the LED lighting for the Wi-Fi and beam forming system to function. This is called A SMART CITY. The definition of SMART is Secret Military Armaments in Residential Technologies It’s already being installed in Porthcawl in the name of faster internet and driverless cars, this is being rolled out by your the local councils everywhere. This SMART CITY agenda is a crime against all life, a total surveillance control grid, it is illegal and uninsurable. It’s time to put all our differences aside to stop this, we need to come together, open a discussion and challenge this. Richard Wallis, Porthcawl Email: fitnessfactory@sky.com

AN APOLOGY Last month we printed a letter titled “Porthcawl’s Saddest Tourist Attraction” sent in by JB, Porthcawl. In hindsight it was poor judgment on our behalf to print the letter, and for this we apologise. We have been in constant dialogue with the family who own the dog (Kuma) and expressed our sincere apologies for the hurt and distress printing the letter has caused them. The family and we both consider this matter now dealt with and are moving on. Below is Kuma’s response to the letter… Seaside News

KUMA

Hi, my name is Kuma. I’m a 5 year old cross Alsatian-Husky, you may recognise me from last month’s issue. I love my family home, I have a big garden to run around in all day with my fur brothers. I really enjoy looking over the beach when I sit by the gate; the best views in Porthcawl. I love all the kind people that come and visit me when they pass my house;

some throw my stick or ball for me, others like to give me a little treat (sometimes too many). My hoomans take my fur brothers and sisters and me down the beach for a long walk every day, we love running on the sand and going in the sea, I always make sure I bring a new stick home to add to my collection! We sometimes sleep upstairs in the bedroom with our hoomans, but sometimes it is too hot for me, so I prefer it outside. I would like to say a big thank you to every person who has supported my hoomans with their kind words during this really difficult time for us. We are saddened that this has become “news” and perhaps if you have concerns in the future, you can give a shout over the gate to my hoomans, they’d be happy to chat with you. Please respect that although we live in a very lovely place, which happens to be on a coastal pathway, this is still my family home and I love it dearly. #BeKind Woof Woof, Kuma

BOOK OF THE MONTH ‘The Lantern Men’ by Elly Griffiths Everything has changed for Dr Ruth Galloway. She has a new job, home and partner, and is no longer North Norfolk police’s resident forensic archaeologist. That is, until convicted murderer Ivor March offers to make DCI Nelson a deal. Nelson was always sure that March killed more women than he was charged with. Now March confirms this, and offers to show Nelson where the other bodies are buried but only if Ruth will do the digging. Curious, but wary, Ruth agrees. March tells Ruth that he killed four more women and that their bodies are buried near a village bordering the fens, said to be haunted by the Lantern Men, mysterious figures holding lights 12 | seaside news

that lure travellers to their deaths. Is Ivor March himself a lantern man, luring Ruth back to Norfolk? What is his plan, and why is she so crucial to it? And are the killings really over?

WOMEN OF COURAGE, HEROINES OF SOE Giliana Balmaceda was the first female agent the Special Operations Executive sent to occupied France. Born in Chile c1910 she worked as an actress in Paris where she met Victor Gerson, a British citizen and a dealer in fine rugs and carpets. The couple married and on 18 June 1940, at the signing of the armistice, they escaped to Britain where they joined the SOE. Victor Gerson suggested creating a network of helpers to assist the entrance and exit of SOE agents assigned to France and Giliana volunteered to assess the possibility. In May 1941 the SOE sent Giliana into occupied France. She returned through Spain in late June 1941. During her three months in France Giliana travelled freely in Lyons and Vichy, ostensibly on holiday, her Chilean passport securing her passage. With a large haul of intelligence, contacts and administrative documents, such as ration cards, Giliana returned to Britain. There, the SOE reproduced the documents and subsequently agents used them on their clandestine missions. FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS

Five years ago, Mr. Hilary Blundell kindly gave a wonderful archaeological collection to Porthcawl Museum. It was the culmination of excavations, travel, study and research of both his grandfather, George, and his father, John; the Squires of Nottage Court 1916-2015. It was George Edward Blundell who, following his passion for archaeology began the collection, often with the help of Sir Cyril Fox who was the keeper of archaeology at the National Museum of Wales 19261948. One site, in particular that they excavated was of an Iron Fort, sited near Merthyr Mawr Warren. George Blundell was born in Dorset, 1867, to Lucy (nee Knight) and the Rev. Augustus Blundell. He attended St John’s College Cambridge, from whence he left to teach science at Wellington College, Berkshire. In 1915 George married Barbara, the daughter of a geology friend, Richard Tiddeman. At the age of 48, George inherited Nottage Court from his mother Lucy’s childless sister Mary Gordon on her death. He immersed himself into parish life but always maintained his passion. Unfortunately, George’s pipe smoking was his undoing as it contributed to his death in 1939. Thankfully, as a result of the work of Museum archaeologist, Nathan Clements, the collection is finally on display. Ceri Joseph

A group of museum members welcomed Emma Moore of Dementia Friends Wales, today when she delivered a dementia friends Information session. This session gave those present an understanding of how important it is to be aware that with the right help people with dementia can be supported to have a good quality of life and experience a sense of well-being. Dementia Friends is a social action movement that aims to increase understanding of dementia and inspire people to take action to support people affected by dementia in their community. It is supported by Alzheimer’s Society , as a strand of its work to create Dementia Friendly Communities – which are communities that are more understanding and inclusive of people affected by dementia. BRYNTEG SCHOOL This term we have welcomed famous Record Producer, Jacquire King (King of Leon, James Bay, Shania Twain) and Dan Evans (Grammy-nominated songwriter) to the College. Both seminars were excellent and were inspirational for our learners. Jacquire King is so busy that he had to give a Skype seminar from his home studio in Nashville, Tennessee. In March we took the students to Liverpool to educate our learners about ‘The Fab Four’. The trip highlights was The Cavern Club, The Beatles Story (Museum) and a visit to The Motor Museum Recording studio where artists, such as The 1975’s and The Arctic Monkey’s have produced their debut albums. On return, all our level 3 learners are working towards their end of year show that is dedicated to ‘The Beatles’, which will be taking place in The Globe, Cardiff (more details to follow). If anyone is interested in any of our music level 2, level 3 or Degree program in Music Production and songwriting, please get in contact. Adam Richards Bridgend College arichards@bridgend.ac.uk

AFON Y FELIN SCHOOL NEWS Our school celebrated Saint David’s Day in great style this year. We had Tales of Wales come in to act out three different Welsh mythical stories to our children. Many of them had the experience of joining in on stage which was great fun. We also had the great pleasure of having world renowned harpist Glenda Clwyd at our school to play a beautiful array of Welsh music for our children. They adored listening and singing along to Welsh folk songs that they have learnt throughout their years at our school. Dosbarth Deri had three top runners from #JustRunPenybont come in to listen to the class’ adverts they had made to go with the 24 | seaside news

Twenty one pupils from Brynteg and Bryntirion Schools recently hosted twenty two French students who were visiting our area from Villenave d’Ornon, our twin town in France. They visited from Monday 24th February until 2nd March and were given a warm welcome by their host families. The Bridgend Town Twinning Association arranged a very comprehensive programme of visits and activities for the week. French students had the opportunity to spend the day in their hosts’ schools following their lessons for the day. They also enjoyed various trips to the Big Pit Mining Museum, Techniquest, the Millennium Centre, The Senedd and the Principality Stadium. Of course there was time set aside for shopping in Cardiff! In addition to the various activities they all enjoyed each other’s company during an evening trip bowling in Tenpin Cardiff Nantgarw and a day trip to St Fagans National Museum of History. The Welsh and French students also enjoyed an evening together in the Bridgend Ravens Rugby Football Club where the Mayor of Bridgend Mr Alan Wathan thanked our host families for their kind generosity with welcoming the French students into their homes. Mr Kammler the French Representative of the Villenave d’Ornon Town Twinning and Mr Adrian Kendall Chairperson also spoke, giving their thanks to all in attendance. Madame Walsh, a French teacher from Brynteg School, would like to thank the Bridgend Town Twinning Association for all their efforts with this programme and to those local families for hosting these students. I am sure new friendships have been formed during this visit. These links enable our young people to make, and hopefully keep, friends from other countries with different cultures. Pupils enjoyed a spectacular St David’s Day at Disneyland Paris this month. 86 pupils participated in Welsh celebrations including exhilarating rides, Only Men Aloud and culminating in a Welsh themed firework display. Back at school pupils thoroughly enjoyed our annual Eisteddfod competing in both on and off stage competitions. Well done to winners Josh Dennis Year 8 and Bethan Watkins and Kian Hamer Davies Year 7. Year 9 pupils also attended a celebration event led by The Achieve Course for The Prince’s Trust. 350 pupils from across South Wales were given free credits to use on activities such as archery, pistol shooting, zip wire, Go karts and the impressive Dragon Slide at Heatherton World of Adventures near Tenby. The weather stayed dry and pupils thoroughly enjoyed the new experiences. Our pupils are proud to join other local schools in painting hoarding panels for the Harbour Quarter Maritime Centre on the Cosy Corner site in Porthcawl. Pupils have created a sea life design to raise awareness of conservation in our community. Finally thank you to Hali Walker and Millie Adams Year 8 who represented our School Parliament at the Student Ambassador Conference discussing issues which impact on children’s rights in Wales. Welcome to my world… So sang Jim Reeves back in 1963, and now our year 7 pupils are making the same invitation. Unlike the silver tongued crooner, our children are inviting us to consider what they think about their world and their place in it. As part of the exciting New Curriculum for Wales, every pupil has been actively involved in a project called “Our World” that spans each of the subjects in the curriculum. Every lesson was designed by our staff with the needs and interests of our pupils in mind. For a whole term, they have been exploring where they see themselves locally, nationally and even globally. They have imagined creating new world in space, investigated where our language comes from, how the Olympic spirit runs though us and a host of other fresh and invigorating challenges bespoke to their learning needs. Staff have really enjoyed the freedom of creating their own curriculum and have seen the levels of engagement and enthusiasm increase, and pupils have given a massive collective ‘thumbs up’ to the project and can’t wait for similar developments to enrich and energise their time in Porthcawl Comprehensive as the new approaches to education in Wales emerge. Year 3 planned and led a successful Cocoa café during Fairtrade Fortnight as part of their aim to raise awareness of the importance of supporting Fairtrade farmers. All pupils from Pre-Nursery to Year 6 attended the café to enjoy the delicious marshmallow lollies and chocolate milk or hot chocolate. The pupils will donate £100 to the Fairtrade organisation and use the remainder of the money to support their local Fairtrade shop in Porthcawl. World Book Day proved a huge success in raising the profile of reading and sharing a love of literature. ST CLARE’S NEWS Students from St Clare’s School have their work published as part a global project involving 50 Cognita schools in Asia, Europe and Latin America. Hundreds of children collaborated to create “Lyla, Louis and the Magic Lift” - a unique and fantastical book aimed at 10 and 11-year-olds, released to mark World Book Day. This is the second year that Cognita has run the grassroots “Share A Story” project - bringing together students over three continents to write an epic adventure in English and Spanish. This year, celebrated children’s authors Anne Fine and Jeremy Strong supported the project. Teams of children from Cognita schools were involved in writing the book – with each school taking on a chapter or illustration before passing it on to the next team. Head of Art, Louise Williams, said, “We’re absolutely thrilled that four of our students’ pictures have been selected for this very special book. We are particularly proud of Year 10 student, Josh McDonald, whose picture has been chosen for the front cover. Our congratulations also go to Year 10 student, Grace Sheard, and Year 6 students, Koto Gutrai and Max Johns”. This is the term where we celebrate all things Welsh. The term started with St Dwynwen’s Day celebrations, we celebrated and commiserated during the six nations rugby and then on to St David’s Day. Despite the weather we have managed to play some rugby and netball matches against local schools. We held a series of events to celebrate St David’s Day. We had a Cawl and Song Evening, everyone enjoyed watching various performances whilst enjoying a wonderful Welsh stew. A number of children across the school created red white and green flags to decorate Porthcawl shops and the reception and year one children were part of a parade in Porthcawl with Menter Bro Ogwr. We also had a fantastic school eisteddfod with keen competition between the houses. Non house the winner with Lowri from Non winning the chair. A large group attended the Urdd local Eisteddfod and there was a very high standard of competition. We won several prizes harp Kali 1st, piano Lowri 1st Maiwen2nd, solo Lowri 1st, folk song Lowri 1st Maiwen 2nd, duet Maiwen and Lowri 2nd, choir, unison group and disco group 2nd. Unfortunately the Urdd has had to postpone all eisteddfodau but we intend filming and showcasing items in the summer. Rhiannon Dixon Pennaeth / Head Teacher

Local news PORTHCAWL RNLI TO HOLD YEAR LONG FESTIVAL CELEBRATING ITS 55TH ANNIVERSARY

Porthcawl RNLI Fundraising and Events Team is renewing its appeal for Active Supporting Members. If you can spare a couple of hours to help with street and store collections or want to organise small fundraising events yourself to help save lives at sea pick up an application form from the Porthcawl RNLI lifeboat gift shop. Chris Page Photo: Stephen Duncombe

Deadline date for the May issue is: Wednesday 15th April To mark 55 years since the RNLI established an inshore lifeboat station at Porthcawl the fundraising and events team will be holding a series of events throughout the year. Plans include two special weekends of events to take place at the start and end of summer. David Shillaw, Chairman of Porthcawl RNLI Fundraising and Events Group, said: “We felt it was important to recognise the 55th Anniversary in which an RNLI inshore lifeboat has been stationed at Porthcawl. Last year our fundraising team had their most successful year ever raising £73,000 and we hope to continue with the same momentum. With launch figures yet to be released by the RNLI for 2019, it is likely Porthcawl will once again be one of the busiest, if not the busiest RNLI lifeboat station in Wales. In 2019 the volunteer crew at Porthcawl had an incredibly busy year once again. “ “We have an excellent record of holding well supported events in Porthcawl to raise funds for the charity and we are very much looking forward to the support of the public throughout our 55th Anniversary year. ‘Our first weekend event will be on Saturday 13 June when a supper evening with entertainment hosted by Mark Llewelyn Evans and friends is being held at and sponsored by the Hi Tide Inn. This will be followed by a festival style event on the Promenade on Sunday 14 June to replace our annual RescueFest which sadly we have had to cancel for this year.” “Another exciting weekend will be held in September with our 55th Anniversary Dinner at the Grand Pavilion on Saturday 19 September followed by a ‘Magical Music’ concert at the Grand Pavilion on Sunday 20 September.” Chris Page, volunteer helm at Porthcawl RNLI and lead organiser of RescueFest said, “We are really disappointed to have to cancel our RescueFest event this year. The local authority has important major sea defence works planned around the breakwater and Eastern Promenade this summer. These works clashed with the proposed date for RescueFest2020 which has meant it is not possible to hold the event as in previous years. We understand regular supporters of this event, around 4000 last year will be dismayed so we plan to hold some small scale lifeboat demonstrations during the year which will be advertised via our social media pages. RescueFest generated significant funds for our charity and I hope the events being held during our 55th anniversary year will be similarly well supported.”

BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE

The slender majority who voted ‘leave’ have had their wish fulfilled, and Britain has left the EU. But democracy did not end with the referendum of 2016, and in true democratic style discussion, debate and campaigning will continue. So, as befits a democracy, Bridgend for Europe (B4E) continues to represent members from across all political parties and from no political party who accept that Britain has left the EU, but believe that Britain should keep close links and ultimately rejoin. Recent events, including floods, Corona-virus, debates about Huawei, chlorinated chicken (which is actually an animal welfare issue) and the climate emergency, together with job losses in manufacturing, and looming crises in farming and fishing, all serve in different ways to illustrate that Britain would be safer, stronger and better off inside a community of 500 million people rather than going it alone in a world dominated by China, the USA and giant multinationals. Delegates from B4E recently attended conferences in London and Cardiff mapping our way forward. More about these conferences in future bulletins. Anyone interested in the activities of B4E can obtain further information by watching this space or via bridgend@walesforeurope.org, our Secretary’s email. Allison Felton Bridgend for Europe

FOURTH LITTER-PICKING HUB OPENS

CALLOUS THIEVES TARGET MOURNERS

The war on litter and waste is continuing with news that the Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cornelly Youth and Community service has become the fourth litter-picking hub to be created in Bridgend County Borough. As recent years have seen an increase in the number of groups, individuals and volunteers organising regular litter-picks, each hub stores equipment such as litter-picking devices, hoops, hi-vis vests, gloves, bin bags and more, all of which can be borrowed to help keep the community clean. The hubs also record litter-picking activity and data which can be used to create maps demonstrating how volunteers are having a positive effect upon local communities while highlighting areas where more actions are needed. The launch of the litter-picking hub at KPC Youth follows the recent Love It, Don’t Trash It campaign which took place in six primary schools including Kenfig Hill and Pyle. During that 12-week project, pupils learned about the effects of rubbish left discarded in their local community and on the beach. The hub is perfect for anyone who wants to spend a few hours improving their community with friends or take part in a larger community clean-up, and I’m sure it will be put to good use.

There was disturbing news at Porthcawl Town Council when members heard that mourners visiting graves at Porthcawl Cemetery had been targeted by thieves. A number of vehicles parked in the car park have been attacked with windows smashed and handbags and other belongings stolen. It is hard to imagine how a newly bereaved woman must feel after visiting the grave of a loved one to find her car smashed and her handbag stolen. Only the lowest of the low will target people when they are visiting family graves. The council already has a warning sign up advising people not to leave valuables in their cars and there has also been a spate of vandalism with graves damaged in the cemetery. The town council is hoping to get some CCTV cameras installed to monitor the car park but in the meantime visitors should take their belongings with them. It is obvious that the thieves are watching when people park which is a frightening thought, especially for women. I applaud Porthcawl Town Council’s efforts to protect people visiting the cemetery and hope that police have taken note of this criminal activity with a view to catching the perpetrators.

Local news MAYORS UPDATE

With clear benefits to be gained from increasing the number of trees in the county borough and maintaining our on-going woodland management activities, the council and its partners are identifying more locations which could benefit, and are developing a costed programme of works to help support this – look out for more details soon. COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

Spring is in the air and perhaps at long last we can enjoy some nice weather; certainly it has been a grim and wet few months; sadly our neighbours not too far away have had to endure flooding and worse, our best wishes go to them and it was great to see local people donating to assist. By the time you read this our first Mayors Community Awards will have taken place; a number of local people will have been recognised for their dedication and commitment to our town – pictures and a report will follow next month. With just a few weeks left of my year as Mayor I have been reflecting upon what a wonderful and generous community we have, and just how many volunteers work so hard for our town. Nowhere was this better seen than at the recent Buckaneers cheque presentation night. Tens of thousands of pounds collected by Porthcawl Carnival and Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim were distributed to over 20 different worthy organisations; a magnificent effort thanks to your generosity, thank you. THOUSANDS OF NEW TREES PLANTED Thousands of new trees have been planted across Bridgend County Borough as part of an ongoing initiative to improve air quality, cut down on pollution, reduce soil erosion and help prevent flooding. The council is working with partners to create cleaner, greener communities and identify where further trees can be planted. To date, more than 4,330 trees have been planted in areas including Sker, Kenfig, Porthcawl and Pyle. Research has confirmed that every year, local trees remove an estimated 2,400 tonnes of carbon and 54 tonnes of pollution from the atmosphere, intercept an estimated 124 million litres of water, and provide ecosystem services worth more than £650,000. We already have an above-average number of urban trees in the area and want to maximise the long-term benefits of this by working with partners such as Natural Resources Wales to plant more, especially in our more heavily populated areas.

Deadline date for the May issue is: Wednesday 15th April LOCAL PUPILS LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST WASTE I’d like to congratulate and thank pupils from all primary schools in the Porthcawl area for the wonderful way in which they have embraced the Love it, Don’t Trash It campaign. They have sent recyclable postcards thanking local businesses who have cut back on excess packaging and single-use plastics, and have written to other businesses to ask them to do the same. The campaign, which is also supported by Bridgend County Borough Council, Porthcawl Town Council, Surfers Against Sewage and SeaQuest, is part of efforts to help make Porthcawl the first plastic-free town in the area. It asks businesses to stop using at least three types of single-use plastic – such as straws, bottles, cutlery, sauce sachets, drinking cups and more. These items are among the biggest offenders when it comes to littering, and I am aware of several businesses who have made efforts such as providing goods in paper bags instead of plastic ones. The enthusiastic way in which local children have taken to the campaign is inspirational, and they should feel very proud of themselves for their good work. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do as part of the next phase of the Love It, Don’t Trash It initiative. THE EYE OF THE STORM

VIRAL LOVE

EASTER

Ron shows me the body - removes the veil, And there he is, now lifeless, pale. Extinguished eyes reflect our fate He cannot see - it is too late.

Ramona with corona How did you get infected? I hope that you’re not blaming me, I hope I’m not suspected. Ramona with corona What tragic happenstance. Now I can only love you From a healthy, long distance. I don’t know what to do now, I am so frustrated ‘Cos I can never see you Since you’ve self isolated. I can phone and text you, Send you emails by the score, But I can never find my way Inside your locked front door. I miss your loving kisses Since you caught the pox. I creep up to your house at night And kiss your letter box. When you’re declared quite free of it A cry of joy I’ll give, But wouldn’t it be tragic If I tested positive? I hope that you would wait for me, So hear my urgent plea; Ramona with corona Please be true to me. Bob Davies, North Cornelly

Early morning, women weeping Angels asking what they’re seeking Saviour risen, ‘I am here’ Tell it out that I am risen Everlasting life is given Redemption’s story, death is conquered – Yes, Jesus is here. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Awake anew and running free, Love’s ocean’s power alive to me: Swirling colours cascade, caressing the crimson sky. Sea’s morning, yawning. wipes crust from the eye. Sketch frothy cathedrals to worship once more Then crashing destructive she hauls to the floor. Where once, in suns cradle, still waters ran deep. Lazy, hazy she murmured through hypnotic sleep. He floats on - where souls have gone? Forgotten now - the waves roll on. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl

A MESSAGE FROM HEAVEN I can see you… Can you see me? Open your mind’s eye, For there I will be. I can hear you…. Can you hear me? Listen to your heart And then you will see. I can feel you…. Can you feel me? I’ve not gone far, My spirit roams free. Just call my name And I will appear, Your Dad, your friend, I will always be near. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

WHATEVER THE WEATHER Woke to the rain on my window, As I greeted the day with a yawn. Not the weather I needed, A gloomy start to the morn. By lunchtime the sun had ascended, Blue sky peeping out from the clouds. I walk by the sea to the harbour, Avoiding the town centre crowds. By evening low pressure approaches, The wind pushing in from the coast. High tide splashes over the sea wall, Photographers love this the most. The weatherman forecasts a cold night, A chance of frost heading our way. All in all a year’s worth of weather. Yes, four seasons all in one day. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

IF YOU ARE FEELING TROUBLED If you are feeling troubled, With worries flowing through your mind, Ignore any negativity, And all those who are unkind. Look forward to the future, We all go through troughs and peaks, Some will last a day or two, Whilst others go on for weeks. Seek help from your employer, Or your own GP instead, Let’s get you back up on your feet, And that negativity out of your head. David Boyce, Brackla

Club features DOG OF THE MONTH – PENNY

Golden oldie Penny is a gorgeous 15-year-old West Highland Terrier and is Dogs Trust Bridgend’s oldest resident. She’s looking for her perfect retirement home with owners who are around for most of the day to keep her company. Despite being a more mature lady, she still enjoys a short walk followed by a snuggle in her bed. Penny has limited eyesight so will suit a quiet home and could live with sensible children eight years and over that will give her some space when she needs it. TEA PARTY TIME FOR GUIDE DOG TETLEY Guide Dogs Cymru has come up with a tasty way to mark National Tea Day on April 21. The charity wants people to enjoy a piece of cake and a cuppa with friends at their very own Guide Dogs Tea Party. This could take place at home, at work, in a community group or at school. There are no set rules - just choose any day to suit you. Sign up to receive a free fundraising kit to inspire you. Inside you’ll find posters and invitations to help you spread the word. Get your paws on free bunting, cake flags and edible puppy cake toppers. There’s even a puppy sweepstake to help boost your tea totals. Every pound you raise will help Guide Dogs to provide its lifechanging services. Just £25 could buy a white harness, the iconic symbol of a fully qualified guide dog like the aptly-named Tetley, a black Labrador working in Bridgend. Tetley’s owner, Tanya Mackenzie-Shearan, said: “Having a guide dog means I can live an independent life. I feel more confident, and my family no longer have to worry that I will walk into something and hurt myself.” Visit www.guidedogs.org.uk/teatime or ring 0345 143 0192.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Recently I was watching a film where the main character said that the three big questions we all would like answered are: Is there a God, What happens after death, and, Is there anybody out there (space)? Do we have our answers at Easter in the empty tomb of Jesus Christ? ‘Jesus is risen from the dead! Why do Christians say so? Well, there is an empty tomb not an occupied one. Then, there were eyewitnesses who saw Jesus die and then alive again; they talked to him, shared food with him, reached out and touched him. These were reliable people who wrote their story down and passed it on. It fulfilled amazing prophecies from hundreds of years before. It was a truth they were willing to die for. It is a story with spiritual power that transforms lives today. If Jesus rose from the dead then he is the Son of God, God the Son, and God exists. If Jesus rose from the dead then there is definitely life after death. If Jesus rose from the dead then life beyond ours is certain and not just a possibility. Come to Gilgal and find out more. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

April is an important month for us. On Saturday 25th we are celebrating the 1st Anniversary of our official opening, with a party and flag raising ceremony at our Hub in Griffin Park. What a great first year it’s been! We have achieved so much and helped many veterans and families already and are grateful to all who have supported us. We continue to open Saturday mornings between 9am-12pm. All veterans, serving military and families welcome. On Sat Feb 22nd Mandy Sidoli from Butterfly Holistic Therapies visited to carry out free Reiki treatments and hand massages on members. Thank you, Mandy! We look forward to welcoming you again soon. On Sat 21st March our members went on a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. Looking ahead, on June 20th we will be holding a Family Fun Day in Griffin Park to celebrate Armed Forces Day. It looks set to be a great day with live music, entertainment, stalls and activities for all ages planned. We also now open fortnightly on Wednesdays 9am-1pm for signposting, advice sessions and selected speakers. Recent speakers were from Bridgend Bereavement Services and the Royal British Legion. Louise Magenty Membership Secretary

February saw our CEO, Cheryl Butcher leave the Talbot Community Centre. Cheryl served for many years, doing everything from arranging trips to sweeping the floors and keeping the Talbot’s doors open to all. It was sad to see her go and we look forward to her visits. We have opened up seats for our Christmas shopping trip to Brighton, a three-day weekend trip with coach and half board travel for £159.99 in November and are welcoming members and non-members. Also, we have booked Nataly Churchill for 10th June with limited tickets remaining. This is all in addition to our busy weekly schedule with bingo on Monday and Friday afternoons at 1:30pm and our diner’s club at 12pm on Wednesday and Fridays. We also offer sewing club on Tuesday (10:30-3:30pm), Slimming World on Thursdays and a new Radio Club has joined us on a Thursday evening. Club features KIDNEY WALES PORTHCAWL

TUSKER ‘ROCK’ CHARITY NIGHT

On 18th February representatives from Kidney Wales Porthcawl fundraising committee visited the Nephrology and Transplant Clinic at The Heath Hospital, Cardiff. Towards the end of last year the Committee were able to pay £5,388 for a bladder scanner and £2,500 for a vein scanner for the clinic, improving patient experience during appointments. We were able to make these purchases because of the generosity of our wonderful supporters, thank you each and every one of you. Kathryn Roper

PORTHCAWL ROTARY INTERNATIONAL NIGHT

The audience were entertained with some extracts from Porthcawl Comprehensive ‘Sister Act’ show. This was followed by delightful insights and performances, which included national poetry and music from nine international students of Atlantic College St Donats representing countries from Asia, Europe, Africa and South America. Also present were Donna Wallbank President of Rotary in Great Briton and Ireland and Hugh Moatt President of Porthcawl Rotary Proceeds from the night will go to the charity ‘SEED’ which supports the construction of a new school in the Anosy region of Madagascar, where children have an only 50% chance of any form of education. A group of talented and confident young people from home and abroad was uplifting. Well done to all of them. David Swidenbank

On Saturday 29th February the Tusker ‘Rock’ Charity night took place at the Hi-Tide where a fantastic £1531 was raised with all proceeds split equally between the Sandville and Porthcawl RNLI. This was an amazing night and the organisers would like to say a big thank you to the brilliant bands who gave up their free time to play at the event; RETRO, Desvalido, Last Chance Heroes and The Eldorado Fins! Also a massive thank you to everyone who attended and supported Tusker ‘Rock!’ and helped make it a great success. Below are the cheque presentations to the Sandville and the RNLI. Michelle Rayson, Gerwyn Jones and I very much appreciate all the help and support we’ve had putting the event together and we are looking forward to making a start on Tusker ‘Rock!’ 2021. Hope to see you there! Nin Rixon

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH April is the beginning of the new tax year, and this year Easter also falls in April. So, taxes and Easter – what a weird coincidence of timing. “Death and taxes,” proclaimed Benjamin Franklin, are the only two certainties in life. But this year for Christians, it’s taxes and resurrection. The earliest Christians proclaimed: “Christ is risen!” But they also turned their words into deeds and lived that Resurrection faith by sharing their wealth. Making sure that no one was in need was the sign that the Risen Christ dwelt among them. Thanks to people who pay their taxes, we have good schools, great libraries, safe neighbourhoods, and the safety blanket of the Welfare State and National Health Service. Perhaps no one is literally raised from the dead, but these taxfunded programmes give us and our family’s new life and new possibilities. I think that’s a definition of resurrection. In the Christian church, there are all kinds of symbols or Easter – the empty tomb, lilies, and eggs. Maybe our chequebooks and self-assessment returns could be added to that list. God Bless, Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE This year our charity, Tools for Self Reliance reaches a milestone. It was established as a registered charity in 1980 so is 40 years old this year. Our mission is to reduce poverty in Africa by helping people build sustainable livelihoods through the provision of tools and training. With a small staff team and a UK wide network of 750 volunteers, we work with local African organisations to deliver a programme of vocational training, life skills, and practical equipment to bring about effective and sustainable change to trades people and their communities.

We work primarily in Ghana, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Our group based in Porthcawl is part of the 750 volunteers, this is our 12th year refurbishing tools for this great charity and your donations of tools and funding make it possible. Due to the Corona virus situation we are closing down so we cannot accept any tool donations or collect any tools. Thank you for your help. David Cook, Workshop Manager

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL During February, we dealt with 2 logged incidents, monitored a further 15 and logged a total of 228 vessels. Recently we extended our spring watchkeeping hours until 1830hrs and during March we have already dealt with 3 incidents in one weekend. These included windsurfers in difficulty and concerns for a person in potential danger. Following the Winter storms, a large number of PVC pipe coils have been washed up along the coastline both here and further afield, having been lost from a shipping container at sea. Thanks to all who contacted us with details of sightings of the pipe coils. We are working closely with HM Coastguard, the harbourmaster and the supplier to effect a prompt and safe recovery. Although this unexpected situation is something different for us to monitor, our position along the coastline and our local knowledge allows us to assist where necessary. We have a duty of care to safeguard our coastline and to protect wildlife wherever possible. Unfortunately as a result of the Coronavirus situation, the Board of Trustees of the National Coastwatch Institution has reluctantly made the decision to suspend all current operations nationally. The Porthcawl station will remain closed until further notice. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My husband has walked out on me after 5 years of marriage. We lived together for 15 years before the marriage. There are no children. I am devastated. He has told me that this is a short marriage and that our assets were his before we married. That is true but the majority of the assets were built up when we were living together and not before or when we were dating. I am desperately worried. We will have to sell our home but I am worried about how much I will come out with in the end. Answer:I am sorry to hear of your circumstances but try not to panick. You and your husband have been in a relationship for 20 years which has involved cohabitation and then marriage. Provided this relationship has been continuous and cohabitation has moved seamlessly into the marriage, the Court is likely to have regard to the full 20 years when considering your financial settlement and will consider this a long relationship. The Court can consider one party’s contributions when looking at a settlement but the needs of each party are equally as relevant and as a general rule, the needs of the parties trump contributions. The longer the relationship/marriage, the less weight contributions carry. I advise you to see a solicitor for help with ascertaining the post of assets available for distribution and also to see an Independent Financial Advisor to determine your borrowing capabilities by way of mortgage. Please also start looking at the price of suitable housing. You will then be able to consider your price range, likely mortgage and the deposit you will require. As a general rule, after a relationship/marriage of this length, the starting point of the Court will be an equal division of assets. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED

We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit then we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A cohabitation agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force - the agreement can say so. Even so, a cohabitation agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice. You must also be open about your individual financial positions when you enter into the agreement. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. If you wish to discuss this further then please contact us. RIGHTS FOR COHABITEES If you are married or in a civil partnership, there are laws in place to help determine how your financial assets should be divided if your relationship breaks down. Cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type in the UK. Couples who live together do not have similar legal protections. And although many unmarried couples believe that because they are in a “common law marriage” they have the same financial claims available to them as married couples, the fact is there is no such thing as a common law marriage. This means that you could be left with nothing in the event of a separation. One way to clearly set out your rights is to have a cohabitation agreement, a legally binding document that sets out how you will manage and organise your finances whilst you live together and how money and property will be divided if the relationship breaks down. Cohabitation agreements can cover a wide variety of things, including how bills are paid, who owns what and what happens if you should separate. A cohabitation agreement is vital if you wish to protect your share in a property and provide a clear definition of how the property is owned. People who receive money from the “Bank of Mum and Dad” to help buy a property often have a cohabitation agreement to specify who paid what and how and when the money is to be repaid. Also, they can be invaluable in ringfencing assets where one party comes to the relationship with assets built up beforehand. Further, they can protect children of a previous relationship or indeed children born from the current relationship. Cohabitation agreements can save you a lot of time and money. Agreeing in advance who owns what and putting that in writing provides you with certainty, and avoids stressful and expensive litigation should you separate. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Women’s institutions BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY

email your report info@seasidenews.co.uk

LALESTON WI We met on 5th March and 23 members were present. Various items were brought to the attention of members from The County Letter. Names were taken of members wishing to attend the Council Meeting in Port Talbot on 29th April; Margaret Williams would be our delegate. Luncheon Club is 17th March at Zia Nina, Bridgend. The speaker for the evening was then introduced Rosemary Scaddon who gave a demonstration on various ways of scarf tying with members joining which was great fun. Margaret gave a vote of thanks. Rosemary Dwyer won the raffle and the competition. Our WI meets on the first Thursday of each month at The Blandy Hall, Laleston at 7.15pm. More information from Diane Marshall on 01656 656600.

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Members of Bridgend club took part in a litter pick at the Parc Slip Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve Bridgend on 7th March to celebrate International Women’s Day. They braved the weather to complete a 5k walk around the reserve, which was followed by most welcome coffee and cakes at the Visitor Centre. Eileen Bayley Publicity/Communications Officer

PORTHCAWL WI The new year kicked off with a most enjoyable auction, which gave members the opportunity to bring along unwanted items and possibly buy something that might take their fancy at a bargain price. Sue, our minutes secretary, was our cracking auctioneer. On 27th February we welcomed our speaker Carys Jenkins of Tenovus Cancer Care in Cardiff. We learned about their fundraising, support and advice, Sing With Us Choirs and the history of the charity. We have a number of our members who volunteer at the local Tenovus charity shops. Thousands of people affected by cancer are supported by the charity every year. The committee is making arrangements for two trips for our ladies, one in May and another to Cardiff for an afternoon tea in August. We have recently been delighted to welcome many new members and would love to see more joining us on the fourth Thursday of each month at 2.00 pm at All Saints Church Hall. Sue 01656 713124 or Anne 07811479405

Due to the current climate we find ourselves in, please check with all clubs, societies etc. before attending meetings or events 44 | seaside news

The 10th of March and we were in the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill for our monthly meeting. Good turnout of members including a new member who wants to join our merry band. W.I. Businesses discussed and outings arranged. It is the turn of one of our link WI’s to arrange an evening of entertainment for us and the other link members. It is always a great evening out and we are looking forward to it. The next day and we are off again to enjoy a lunch to celebrate our 70th anniversary how time flies when you are enjoying yourselves. Our speaker this month was Mr. Robert Taylor. His topic Stormy Down Airfield what an interesting talk, he could have gone on for another hour and we would not have noticed the time passing. He told us so many facts and figures backed up with pictures about the airfield that we didn’t know. He is a mine of information. Next month is Mr. John Sheen, topic. 4 Men and a Pastie, watch this space. Tea and biscuits, coffee as well we aim to please, call in were always pleased to see you. Christine Callaghan

NEWTON WI Once again included in our March meeting was a celebration of St David’s Day. Following the WI business for the evening, we then partook of the celebratory meal. Delicious soup bread and butter, followed by Welsh cakes. Thanks to Jennifer and Committee. A most talented young lady with a beautiful voice ‘Elys Davies’ followed this. Elys sang the role of Mother Superior in the Porthcawl Comprehensive School Musical show, this year. We were very privileged to have her entertain us; we wish her well with her future plans. On Shrove Tuesday, we held our annual Pancake Morning. We thank Anna and Shirley for their culinary skills, in cooking the scrumptious pancakes. There was much amusement with the game of ‘Tossing the Pancake’, the winner this year was Dianne Raybould, who received a box of chocolates and Glenys Griffiths was awarded the wooden spoon. It was unanimously agreed that the morning was great fun. We look forward to our next meeting on April 1st. M. Freeman

Business & finance FORGOTTEN SERVICE PROVIDERS?

COVID19 AND YOUR MONEY

Well throughout the last week, and at the time of writing, I am busy dodging Coronavirus and making good use of that squeezy bottle of sanitizer as I tap on my germ-laden keyboard. Now, not wanting to lose sight of the importance of being careful and diligent, it’s business as usual and I nonetheless draw attention to a group of seemingly forgotten people. Landlords. Not since George Osborne annoyed the rental community with his Gordon Brown-like tax grab (remember the raids on pension funds?) on Landlords’ concessions with tax breaks for providing rental properties, a practice carried on by his successor Philip Hammond, have I seen such an unfair system become so engrained in the mortgage market. Whilst there are many big time professional landlords, let’s recognise that many Landlords are simply hard-working folk who choose to put their hard-earned cash into property instead of elsewhere, in order that they build up something akin to a pension for themselves for retirement as well as providing a much-needed service, helping those people who cannot get a Council house rental or indeed obtain a mortgage to buy their own place. As a Landlord, you will be aware of the difficulty in securing mortgage or remortgage funding due to the onerous and dreaded ‘stress tests’ on rental income that lenders now apply to buy-to-let finance. Osborne dealt the blow of disappearing tax relief on costs, etc., whilst lenders have put in place stringent rental calculations, which have conspired to make borrowing extremely difficult. That’s where we come in. As a whole of market adviser, we have access to the UK’s specialist buy-to-let lenders, many of whom do offer sensible rental income demands for landlords and we can find deals that individuals probably couldn’t find for themselves. We recently had a lady landlord, who works full-time in a normal job but who couldn’t find a suitable lender when she tried to perform stress tests herself - different lenders have different stress rates. However, within a very short while we had researched the market on her behalf and found two immediately available deals to suit her requirements, with more since. We also have lenders visit our office regularly, so we have access to the most up-todate best information. If YOU are a Landlord already looking for a new remortgage deal or you’re trying to get into rental properties as an investment for the first time, call us on 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 for an initial chat.

“What assets could possibly be safe from the coronavirus?” a client asked. It’s a very good question and as this is unchartered territory there is no simple answer. With global markets in turmoil and down 30% in recent weeks is there a safe place for a stocks and shares ISA or Pension Fund? It all largely depends on your personal circumstances and how soon you need access to your capital. If the money can be left for the long term then it will recover but if your needs are short term then you should seek advice about reducing your risks and moving funds to a safer place within the products you have. Some products have access to a wide choice of funds for you to seek safety but if you have limited choice then you need to look elsewhere with the help of an independent financial advisor. The usual safe havens are cash deposits, government bonds and gold but this isn’t strictly true in this downturn as gold has also fallen in value in recent weeks and even some bonds are looking very vulnerable. If you do move funds into cash the interest rate will be near to zero for the foreseeable future given that bank base rates are now only 0.25%. Although your money is safe, eventually you will have to come out of hiding when markets recover but timing this downturn will be difficult as it may last longer than we want. This will not be a V shaped recovery as we had in 2008/9 but more likely a U shaped return or even a prolonged L shape scenario. What influences a rebound can be many things but if we’re not spending any money to generate growth, which is very likely, then we have ‘the paradox of thrift’ and a prolonged period when markets drag along the bottom indefinitely. Uncertain times need creative thinking. Clients don’t ring when the sun is shining but mostly when it’s raining. That’s when an IFA earns his or her crust! Our number is below. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB April – Sunshine and showers! Spring has finally sprung. Lots of work to do in the garden; Lift and divide perennial plants, divide hostas before they come into leaf, pinch out tips of fuchsia shoots and sweet peas, divide primroses, tie in climbing and rambling roses, dead head daffodils and tulips leaving foliage to die down naturally, deadhead faded flowers from winter pansies encouraging new flowers. Enough? No – well time to pay serious attention to your lawn! After a winter of neglect it will benefit from a little TLC (my husband is overjoyed!) Start mowing once a week with mower blades at their highest, gradually lowering them every week. Be sure to level out any humps and bumps, they cause the mower to scalp the grass, weakening it and encouraging weeds and moss, Beware , lawn weed killer chemicals can pollute groundwater, killing more than the weeds. Violas, enchanting little plants, with their faces all turned to the sun like a little choir, but did you know how clever they are? They use ants to disperse their seeds, which have a food source attached; the ants carry away the seeds, eat the food and leave the seed to germinate, clever stuff! Chris Early

With the annual plant sale fund raising event just a month away we are all very busy! Some members are growing a large range of plants so our greenhouses are bulging at the seams! This year the sale is being held on Saturday 2nd of May from 10 am. The plants on offer each year include a wide range of bedding, vegetables and perennials as well as the usual tea, coffee and a wonderful range of cakes. Fingers crossed for fine weather! In our gardens at this time of the year the weather can swing quite dramatically between warm sunshine, freezing cold and drenching wet! Very tender plants need to be looked after very carefully right now as a sudden frost will kill unprotected plants and all the hard work put in since January will be for nought! When the weather is kind enough to allow us to be outdoors it is worthwhile checking on the daffodil flowers that have gone past their best and snipping off the flower stems to allow the bulbs to bulk up rather than waste energy. It is also a good idea to try and keep on top of the weeding as they appear rather than let them take over. Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER UPDATE As some of you know by now, we’ve taken the sad but sensible decision to cancel this year’s charity ball. We tried to secure a different date, but we were unable to, so the only smart thing to do was completely cancel it. These are unprecedented times were in at the minute and who knows how things are going to pan out. We’re hoping that by August our charity walk can still go ahead but who knows? We’ll advertise it and just take it day by day, week by week, and look at it closer to the time. We will of course keep you all informed by means of our social media platform. We’ve also had the sad news that our giving platform Wonderful.org has closed down as of the 31 March. It seems that this is a direct result of the Corona Virus. I will be looking into a new giving platform so please give us some time to do this. We want to reiterate that we’re here for those going through treatment for cancer and its especially important that they keep themselves healthy. It could be a huge knock on effect if there’s only one wage coming in and then that person has to self-isolate, so please be mindful of each other and look after yourselves in these scary and unknown times. WHAT IS 5G? In order for 5G to be effective it has to have massive power supply to large transmitter/receivers that will be strategically placed in a grid, then smaller units on every lamppost with the 50 | seaside news

MEDITATION Imagine yourself trapped in an enclosed space with a deeply frightened creature. The creature howls, whines and whimpers. It throws itself against the walls. It urinates and excretes on the floor. The whole experience is a nightmare. Now imagine yourself in a park, grass and trees as far as the eye can see. The creature appears, racing in circles, howling loudly. But after a while it slows down. It starts to relax. Eventually, it lies down to rest in the cool shade. In the untrained mind, the experience of fear can feel like confinement with a panicking animal. Practising the Dhamma, it’s not necessarily that the fear no longer arises. It’s more that we enlarge the space around it. The fear runs its course and comes to rest. We can accomplish this by grounding attention in the body. We make sure that our breathing is normal. Then we establish a relaxed awareness of the pattern of sensations coursing through the body from head to feet. We make the body into a spacious park. We don’t have to struggle with the fear. We allow it to cease. Ajahn Jayasaro Supplied by Neville Evans

VITAMIN C & COVID-19 Vitamin C already being used to prevent and treat COVID-19 in China and in Korea, and it’s working. Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, Mar 1, 2020, by Andrew W. Saul, Editor-in-Chief First of all, the naysayers are too late. Vitamin C is already being used to prevent and treat COVID-19 in China and in Korea. And it is working. Here is a verified official statement from China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University Second Hospital: “On the afternoon of February 20, 2020, another 4 patients with severe coronavirus pneumonia recovered from the C10 West Ward of Tongji Hospital. In the past 8 patients have been discharged from hospital. . . high-dose vitamin C achieved good results in clinical applications. We believe that for patients with severe neonatal pneumonia, and for critically ill patients, vitamin C treatment should be initiated as soon as possible after admission. Numerous studies have shown that the dose of vitamin C has a lot to do with the effect of treatment. Highdose vitamin C can not only improve antiviral levels, but more importantly, can prevent and treat acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress (ARDS).” Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

The choir celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020. To mark the event an anniversary dinner was held in the High Tide. The evening was a fantastic success. Following introductions and anecdotes from Vice President David Newton-Williams and a very nice dinner, the choristers, wives and guests were thoroughly entertained by the wonderful Mike Doyle. Thanks goes to our longest serving chorister and evenings organiser, Stuart Philips. A return visit to entertain the staff and students of the Business School of Cardiff University was again well received. In the wonderful setting of the Cardiff City Hall, the St. David’s Day themed evening concluded with the Chinese students joining in with the phonetically translated ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’. Always a great evening. The choir performed at the St. David’s Day concert at Porthcawl Primary School. The children joined in with the choir on some of the welsh classics and a thoroughly enjoyable morning was had by all. One of our choristers Phil Benjamin is currently a very proud man indeed. Grandfather of the brilliant Sam Costelow, outside half of the Wales under 20 team and man of the match in the winning team against England. Scoring 18 of the 23 points including the match winning last minute drop goal; an emerging superstar. Ian Williams

I had hoped to keep off the subject of the dreaded coronavirus Covid-19 which is sweeping the world, causing major disruption in so many countries and changing the way we lead our lives, but it is inevitably having a big impact on my own shooting schedule for ‘The Mystery of the Llandow Air Disaster’, which has been mentioned in this column over the last few months. Barring a miracle, the carefully worked-out timetable of filming seems likely to run way beyond its anticipated date and all future planning is likely to be affected by whatever has to be done to keep our society safe. Last month I listed all the locations that my film unit will need to visit in different parts of the country over the coming weeks, but travel restrictions may well apply by then. The only crumb of comfort is that if we are all forced to curtail our movements and stay in our houses to avoid passing on this wretched virus, at least I have plenty to get on with at home, finishing the model of the Avro Tudor 5 aircraft needed for the special effects sequences in the film. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Alan Thomas Memorial Competition where each member could enter up to 4 digital images and/or prints, Mono only, no colour. The winner of this competition was decided by the sum of their 2 top scoring entries. It was a tie between Heather Roper and Richard Jenkins so we then had to introduce their 3rd highest scoring entry making Heather the winner. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR. CÔR DYSGWYR PORTHCAWL / PORTHCAWL WELSH LEARNERS’ CHOIR St David’s Day After a most successful concert to celebrate St David’s Day, the residents of Middleton Court, Porthcawl and their guests raised £539 for their chosen charity, Wales Air Ambulance. Porthcawl Welsh Learners’ Choir would like to congratulate them on their fund raising achievement. After an enjoyable concert last year, Porthcawl Learners’ Choir was invited to perform once again at Middleton Court to celebrate St David’s Day this year. There were several songs where the audience had the opportunity to participate. Along with the songs the choir members added some readings and a solo. Indeg, accompanied by Llinos, also treated us to a beautiful solo performance. At the end of the concert a local representative of the Wales Air Ambulance charity thanked the residents for the total raised. She also explained how the charity would like to offer a 24/7 service in the future. The choir wishes to thank Middleton Court for their warm, welcoming atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed performing for the residents too. For further details, contact: Email: cordporthcawl@gmail.com Tel: 07730 221642 Irene Collier

Welcome to the Nipper Section Our club’s Nipper section are aged between 7-13. As a Nipper your child will be taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills, surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, boardpaddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays).

Sport reports SPORTS THERAPY Hi I am Gareth Charnock I am a qualified Sports Therapist at Level 3 and 4 at diploma level and I have been in practice since 2018. I have a treatment room based at Porthcawl Health and Fitness. Sports massage can help reduce muscle tension and DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness), enhances performance, alleviates and treats injuries. It benefits pre and post events i.e cycling events, running events any sport you partake in regularly really like rugby, football, and swimming. It can help performance and recovery. I offer rock blade, kinesiology taping and cupping at my clinic. Sports massage is worth considering if you participate in regular exercise.

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS

Running pioneers in Porthcawl mined a rich seam of terrific trail - as well as the bright lights of the Promenade and ‘Kiss-mequick’ thrills of Coney, an abundance of sand dunes, commons and beaches, stretching from Merthyr Mawr to Kenfig Pool were uncovered. As spring is sprung, the lighter evenings mean this treasure trove of trail is once again opened - allowing our coaches to tap into these resplendent routes. The club, now well oiled and fuelled by a kindred passion, moves forward as one, to embrace these gifts of nature. (As well as enjoying a pint or two). The West Glam League Cross County and Tourist Parkrun to Severn Bridge successes move us nicely to our Annual Awards Night on 3rd April. Another batch of Couch to 5k are set to graduate on May 2nd. More 10-year anniversary events are planned, including Run Fest on May 30th. Join the fun on Mondays and Wednesdays 6.30pm from the Rugby Club. Wilfy Edwards

PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM

Sports Massage can also help people who do not participate in sport if you are sat at a desk could be from repetitive strain injury, tennis elbow, and sciatica and muscle spasm. The treatment takes around an hour, where I take a full history and will provide my findings and a plan forward. My priority is to my clients to ensure they get the best recovery. One of the reasons I became involved in Sports therapy is due to injuries I incurred myself. Contact via facebook or social media www.porthcawlsportstherapy.co.uk

Despite a wet and windy Christmas Eve, Christmas Day 2019 saw perfect conditions for the Swim. The sun was shining and the tide was out leaving a vast expanse of golden sand for our swimmers to run down on their way to the water. With 1,300 registered swimmers and around 5,000 spectators the organisers were delighted to see so many happy faces. It was great to see the beach wheelchair we had donated towards being used on the day too! The fancy dress theme of ‘A Trip Down Memory Lane’ linked to this year’s headline charity of Alzheimer’s Society Cymru and led to some amazing costumes. Whilst the event is great fun and brings the community
