Dear Editor, It has been good to read that the BCBC is to purchase the leasehold of Salt Lake car park for £3.3million of our money. Nothing has been done over the last 10 years since the regeneration deal was agreed but the idea is still there to increase the population by building 1200 new homes. The developers must remember that our town needs to remain attractive to tourists. Unfortunately BCBC ‘killed’ Bridgend town Centre and is now having to spend money to try and revive it. In addition, the relocation of the doctor’s surgery will have an impact on the number of people using town. When the valuable land of Porthcawl is sold off to developers let us hope that some of the monies made is used to improve the town, as a lot of tidying is required. And I hope that it is not all spent in other areas of Bridgend County. John Finney, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I was parked in the disabled area in Hillsboro Place on Friday 16th March from 2.00 to 3.00 o’clock. On my return, the passage side of my car was badly damaged, no name or number left by the person responsible for this. The only clue I have is that the paint left on my car came either from a white or a grey car, and their car must have the driver’s side damaged with traces of black paint. If this person reads the Seaside News, please have the decency to come forward via the Seaside News. I am sure neighbours would notice this damage to your car. I am a lady 80 years of age and keeping my car on the road is quite an expense for me. The damage you have caused, to be put right, will cost me £100. Does that make you feel guilty in any way, causing an old lady such distress? AW, Porthcawl

RE: A RARE VISITOR Dear Editor, I was intrigued to see the photos of the short-eared owl submitted by Mike Pugh in the March edition. I was walking my dog Amber across Locks Common in Porthcawl last week when I saw the owl flying low above my head being mobbed by a couple of crows. It was holding its own pretty well. At one point I could swear that it swooped low and winked at me as if to say ‘just watch this!’. Just then one of the crows swooped down at it, but the owl was too agile and it slowed down so the crow overtook it and then it swiped it with its talons across the underside of its body. The crow gave up and flew away. However the other crow was not put off and attempted the same manoeuvre and received the same response. However this crow was not put off so easily and tried again. This time the owl swooped down into the gorse. The crow then lost interest and flew away. The owl continued happily on its way. I must say I was disappointed the owl did not return to say ‘I told you so’! Mike Summerton, Porthcawl

It was a pleasure to host Porthcawl’s annual Book Quiz in which two children from each of the local Schools take part. Each school answers 20 questions on a different book, and everyone who takes part receives a goody bag with additional prizes for the winner and runner up. As part of our Live and Loud events, Lalala Productions recently visited Porthcawl Library and entertained the children with a wonderful mix of English and Welsh storytelling. Local history PORTHCAWL AND ‘THE RED BARON’

WARTIME BRIDGEND

1st April commemorates the centenary of the Royal Airforce, which was formed out of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. Yet, that same month the greatest German flying ace, Baron von Richthofen, The Red Baron, credited with 80 confirmed kills, was himself shot down on 21st April. At the time he was involved in a dogfight involving Canadian Captain Arthur Roy Brown, who was initially credited with the kill; yet did not himself claim the victory. However, more recent historical research and evidence attributes the fatal bullet as having been discharged from an Australian Lewis Gunner sited below in Vauz sur Somme. Of three possible gunners of the 4th Australian Division, it is now widely believed that Sergeant Cedric Bassett Popkin fired the fatal shot. Cedric was born in Australia, the eldest son of immigrant William Popkin from Maesteg. Following the death of his mother, Lilian, his younger brother Roland was sent to live with his sister at 35 Mary Street, Porthcawl. In 1916, Roland who was studying law in London enlisted in the London Regiment, 28th Artist’s Rifles, and was killed in action, in France, on 27th September 1918. Cedric, survived the war despite losing a leg, and died in 1968 in Australia aged 78years old. Ceri Joseph

On Saturday 16th June Bridgend Town Centre will once again be transported back in time to the wartime era. This FREE family event was hugely successful last year with over 3000 attending. This year to mark the Centenary of WWI the event with have an interesting mix of both WWI and WWII interactive stalls, demonstrations, re-enactments, exhibitions and entertainment for all ages. This year will feature a full size replica WWI Bristol Scout Bi Plane, an array of vintage vehicles together with a multitude of realistic demonstrations from experts showing how life had to be lived in that era. This year will also feature;•WWII Codes and Code Braking, 1940’s Home Guard, Welsh WWII Infantry, WWI Airship Crew, a traditional Punch and Judy puppet show, WWII toy soldier painting, poppy and medal making children’s craft, School life and period games and much more! •Live entertainment will take place throughout the day creating a vibrant wartime ambiance with live music from the era. A George Formby lookalike will mingle and serenade the crowds, with Winston and Monty making a special appearance for the day. •Bridgend allotmenteers will show how the Dig for Victory Campaign was put into reality; various local military organisations will add their expertise to the event •A full exhibition centre is available at Carnegie House in Wyndham Street to entertain and inform the public. School reports MYNYDD CYNFFIG PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our pupils continue to receive a wide range of learning experiences including a visit from ‘The Really Wild Show’, a trip to Greenmeadow Community Farm near Cwmbran, a Bird Feeder workshop at Pyle Library, several dance workshops and a mock Wedding at St Theodore’s Church in Kenfig Hill for our Foundation Phase children. In Key Stage 2, our Year 5 classes have been go-karting whilst Year 6 have visited RAF St Athan as part of their STEM project about drones. We have also had visits from Techniquest who did a ‘Starlab’ demonstration, the RNLI talked about beach safety and from Madeleine Moon, Member of Parliament for Bridgend, who talked to our pupils about her work within our community and at Westminster. We celebrated St David’s Day with dance, drama and songs, which made us proud to be Welsh. Many congratulations to Mynydd Margam on winning the Eisteddfod which involved writing, art and costume competitions. Our pupils have also participated in various sporting competitions including netball and football as well as in swimming where our Year 5 & 6 girls team recently performed exceptionally well at the Urdd National Swimming Gala Finals in Cardiff Bay. THE BRIDGE This is our first time contributing to the Seaside News. We would like to share the many events happening here at The Bridge. Our school is an Alternative Provision, which provides education for children who struggle attending mainstream school. This term, we have been focusing on being a Rights Respecting School (RRS). We are currently working towards the Silver Award. In April, we are expecting a visit from the Children’s Commissioner of Wales (Sally Holland) she is going to be talking about her role of working with young people. Some of our year 11s recently joined in a webinar organised by Sally where they discussed the many issues around Islamophobia. A short while ago, we were nominated for the green token appeal in Asda. Thanks to the generosity of the local community we received the most tokens and were awarded £500. The money is being used to renovate our common rooms. We would also like to mention our year 11 pupils who are currently working hard and revising for their GCSE exams. We wish them all the best of luck. Year 10 and Year 11 Seaside News team

BRYNTEG SCHOOL Recently a group of year 9 students had the opportunity to experience workshops with BBC School Report and Digital Cities in the Wales Millennium Centre. The main focus of the event is to educate students on digital journalism and the many different job opportunities available. Each workshop was run by different companies and topics included coding, virtual reality, real news and radio. In addition Brynteg will take part in the BBC School Report annual News Day, simultaneously creating video, audio and text-based news reports and publishing them online. Congratulations to two year 10 students Ella and Seren who won second prize in the National Oxplore Big Question Competition. Pupils from schools nationwide were invited to submit a thought provoking question. The girl’s successful question was ‘Is the population of people with mental health issues increasing? If so, why is this?’ The question impressed the judging panel and both received a £20 book token. Well done! Brynteg School celebrated World Book Day during March. Pupils and staff had the option to come to school dressed as a book character. There were many activities throughout the day and students thoroughly enjoyed! Jen L Davies

school reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL, PORTHCAWL

As anyone who has watched Blue Planet will know, at least 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped in the oceans every year where it chokes, entangles and poisons marine life. St Clare’s School in Newton on the outskirts of Porthcawl decided to help clean up the plastic waste we unfortunately now find in our oceans and on all of our beaches. Despite gloomy grey skies, the Year 11 students armed with litter-pickers had a successful clean-up and collected 12 bags of rubbish as well as a big fishing crate, all of which had washed up onto Newton Beach after the last few weeks of unusually heavy storms. Rachel Smart, Acting Deputy Head said, “St Clare’s takes its social responsibility very seriously and outdoor learning is important to the wellbeing of our pupils from our Nursery to Sixth Form. We’re very fortunate to be so close to the glorious Heritage Coastline and it’s crucial that we all play a part in taking care of it. A spirit of adventure and a creative, intuitive approach inspires our learning and yields superb academic and other results. CORNELLY PRIMARY Our St David’s Day Eisteddfod, despite being belated, was a superb Welsh celebration complete with competition winners, Chairing of the Bard and Welsh Cakes! While World Book Day was an opportunity to celebrate reading when we dressed up as book characters and enjoyed fun activities. Two mums and a grandmother had a big surprise on Mother’s Day when, thanks to the Sainsbury’s competition winners, they were presented with flowers and chocolates. A surprise for children too when the mysterious Foundation Phase egg hatched to reveal Kerry a real live Bearded Dragon lizard! Fair Trade Friday saw our Eco Committee raising £168 for the fruit and vegetable garden they are developing in conjunction with CDDT and the Parent Council. The School Council have conducted a traffic survey with PCSOs monitoring vehicles with Speed Guns and we have learned about swimming safely from RNLI Lifeguards. Tray and Display days enabled parents and carers to come in and see their child’s work and Year 5 & 6 children shared science activities on their Shine Day as part of STEM Science Week. PIL PRIMARY NURSERY NEWS Nursery’s topic this term is Mini Zoo. They are learning all about different animals, their homes and what they need to live. Last week they visited the Pet Shop on Pyle Cross. They saw hamsters, chinchillas, guinea pigs, budgies and lovebirds. The highlight of the visit was seeing the two African grey parrots named Pepsi and Tango. We used real money to buy fish food for Nemo our class goldfish and birdseed for the wild birds. On Wednesday Mr Bentley brought two budgies to Nursery. The children listened to Mr Bentley explaining how he looks after them and what they like to eat. We learnt that budgies originally came from Australia. The children asked lots of questions and all thought that they would like a budgie as a pet. Thank you Mr Bentley. Neil Pryce

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Sixth Form pupils at PCS had the opportunity to grill the Rt Hon Priti Patel MP, Suzy Davies AM and Cllr Carolyn Webster at school just before half term. Pupils questioned them on a range of issues from the uses of technology in government to Brexit. Ms Patel was pleased to hear the passion from the questioning and the interest in politics, both devolved and national, and “was impressed at the level of engagement by the students of the school”. We have just held our Annual Awards Evening which recognised the achievements and successes across the school of pupils from 2016-17 academic year. The evening was extremely well attended by parents and pupils, and it was wonderful to celebrate so many individual triumphs. Current Year 7 pupils were also recognised with Honours for extra-curricular accomplishments. Congratulations to everyone involved! Led by pupils to raise standards in boys’ writing. This year Porthcawl Primary School has continued to work as a Literacy Hub School for Central South Consortium. This role has included supporting schools across South Wales as well as running a successful three day programme aimed at raising standards in boys’ writing. The programme received excellent feedback and was well attended by schools from across South Wales. One of the aspects which had a particularly big impact was getting our pupils working with practitioners on the programme. We are very proud of how confident and enthusiastic our pupils are when it comes to writing so we decided that they were the best people to show what we do as a school. On day 2 a variety of pupils were partnered with teachers and they took part in a Visual Literacy lesson. The lesson involved many techniques including modelling and creating success criteria as well as extended writing and all the pupils involved did an amazing job of showing the practitioners techniques that work for us as a school. Being a Literacy Hub school has meant we have worked alongside many great schools and it is very rewarding to see our pupils contributing to our programme. Jo Rowley Head Teacher

It has been a busy term so far! Through the hard work of the pupils and the encouragement of the ‘Criw Cymraeg’ we have successfully won the Welsh Charter bronze award. Mia and Carwyn have recently collected the award from Central South Consortium. Our themes were launched with visits to Margam Park and St Fagans and with performances by ‘In Character’ theatre about Henry Tudor, the Mimosa and the journey of the Welsh Language. An inspiring start to our work! As well as watching performances many of our pupils have been performing on S4C. Over the Festival we saw Lacey in ‘Un Bore Mercher’ / ‘Keeping Faith’ and Carwyn and Lowri on ar ‘Fidio Fi’. Over the next few weeks, Ben, Caian, Finlay, Gwion, Kian, Phoebe and Sonny will also be on ‘Fidio Fi’ and Ava, Corey, Elly, Eluned, Georgia, Gethin, Morgan, Noah on ‘Stwnsh Sadwrn’. Years 3 and 4 are busy working on an ‘Expressive Arts’ project developing creative dances based on the history of Twm Carnabwth and the Rebecca Riots. Whilst there is an air of great excitement as we prepare for the Urdd eisteddfodau and sports competitions. Well done to the rugby squad on their recent success in the Urdd tournament. AFON Y FELIN PRIMARY We have been judged as a Yellow School again! This means we are an effective school, with good learner outcomes, and a good understanding of performance and self improvement. On Safer Internet day, Mr. Hughes also held a workshop to help the parents understand how to keep their children safe online, as well as an interactive quiz with the children. The KS2 pupils attended a workshop, “Show Racism the Red Card,” a very important lesson! We have been fortunate enough to welcome Lizzie back to our school, she very kindly helped us with our dance entry in the Eisteddfod last year. The parents were invited in to see the dance, Waking the Giant of Cader Idris. We welcomed Glenda Lwyd, the harpist back again, she is always a very popular visitor, she played Clocks by Coldplay among others. Our World Book Day and Eisteddfod celebrations were delayed by the snow, lots of imaginative costumes, and the standard of entries for the Eisteddfod made the judging harder than ever! BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS We are celebrating the success of our recent Welsh Government data that has shown we are the top in the sector for Performing Arts and Music in Wales, well done team. The fashion and textiles courses have had a very exciting term that included a visit to Bath Fashion Museum and Bristol Costume Services to get inspired by historical fashion. The tutors then took the learners to a workshop and tour of the Sustainable Studio in Cardiff to learn more about up-cycled fashion. This is a really interesting area of study and the students produced really creative ideas. This then led to a visit from ‘The Stitchery’ to discuss ethical fashion brands and how to up-cycle clothes. All these projects and trips are to inspire students and kick off their design projects, which will be showcased in our fashion show on May 10th at 7pm in the Sony Theater. There is no fee to attend the show, but donations will be welcomed and given to a chosen charity. Next month I will be updating you on more Creative Arts news including updates for our music show in The Hi-tide Porthcawl called ‘Merseybeat’. A RIVERS JOURNEY I dash through the rough vales, skimming my bed elegantly; as I twist and slide through the slimy rocks, my tail follows behind me trying so hard to catch up. I spot a waterfall dribbling down its slide and gushing like the speedy waves I long for! It fights with the rocks as it reaches the depths. Then, I take my turn and at the bottom, I meet my foaming friends, bubbling like lemonade being blown through a straw. We play tag in the crystal clear water under my feet! I flow faintly through the rigid rocks as I see stunning blossom trees in a shade of glamorous baby pink. Near them, I see some humans glaring at me so I dance my best dance. The birds sing for me and their voices make them the kings of the sky in the day and night. I decide to move along and as I am gliding, my eye is caught by a humongous horse. He started galloping gracefully but my hunger distracts me so I feast on two big, juicy fish! Now that I have eaten I now have enough energy to race to the finish line. I sprint past the meadows and more blossom trees. I have no time to lose! I wave goodbye and am back on my way. I can smell my destination just a few steps away. I am free finally back in the sea again. My rolling body feels open and I am able to breathe again. I am eventually reunited with my friends and family. I am now released. Our SeaQuest team are busy delivering a range of beach and indoor Coastal Science and Discovery sessions, including Coastal Crusader and Beach Discovery workshops, together with sessions on the beach for schools. Things are happening in Porthcawl. After what seems like an endless lull when nothing much seemed to be going on, work is now underway on replacing the so-called tarmac beach and is also due to start on the new Watersports Centre at Rest Bay. This centre will highlight Porthcawl’s growing importance as a base for surfers – something that the planned Maritime Centre at Cosy Corner will also develop. I recently visited the old watchtower on the breakwater which is now home to the National Coastwatch Institution. The building was renovated with money from BCBC, which owns it, Cadw and Heritage Lottery. It is a base where 40 local volunteers, working on rotas, provide extra sets of eyes to watch out for swimmers, shipping and surfers. The NCI is actually a charity so nobody gets paid – volunteers even pay for their own uniforms. They work under the direction of the Coastguard Operations Centre at Milford Haven and also liaise closely with the RNLI lifeboats crews nearby. I was very impressed with their operation, which provides cover in daylight hours 365 days a year. It’s yet another example of the great community spirit to be found in Porthcawl.

A NEW WAVE OF LIFEGUARD SERVICES ROLL IN

It was my great pleasure to be the guest judge at the ‘Fairtrade Bake Off’ at last month’s Bridgend Fairtrade Festival. The event was organised by The Bridgend Fairtrade Partnership. Local schools, community groups and individual bakers were invited to get baking and to use as many Fairtrade ingredients as they could in their entries. There were some fabulous cakes including coconut flapjacks, a chocolate ginger cake, a banana cake, a paradise cake, a world war one trench cake and a coffee and walnut cake. There was also a lovely lion cake. The cakes were delicious and it was great to have the opportunity to sample them all. It was very difficult to pick an overall winner as the standard was very high. Judging mainly on taste, although presentation and texture did feature in my deliberations, my favourite cake was the banana cake. The two runners up were the paradise cake and the coffee and walnut cake. There was also a prize for the young baker of the lion cake. As well as the Bake Off, there were a range of stalls selling jewellery, bags, scarves, hats, socks, chocolates and other Fairtrade products.

As Bridgend County Borough moves into spring and we all start to look forward to some warmer weather, I’m delighted to confirm that last year’s scheme to provide seasonal lifeguard services in partnership with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is set to return. Bridgend County Borough Council, Porthcawl Town Council and Parkdean have agreed to jointly fund the service with the RNLI over the next three years. The partnership will provide lifeguard services at Rest Bay, Pink Bay, Coney Beach and Trecco Bay, and will be reviewed in 2021. The RNLI already patrol 220 UK beaches across the UK where they spot danger, save lives and help to keep beach visitors safe. Lifeguard recruitment, training and overall management will be undertaken by the RNLI, and they will be working closely with local surf lifesaving clubs as well as the volunteer crew at Porthcawl’s RNLI lifeboat station. This is going to be of great benefit to Porthcawl, and not just because research has demonstrated that seasonal lifeguard services can benefit coastal economies, reduce costs to the NHS, discourage anti-social behaviour and more. By now you should have seen the artist impression of how new sand-coloured ‘terraced’ sea defences will look when work to install them at Porthcawl’s town beach is completed later this year. I hope you’ll agree that the new defences are a huge improvement over the current ‘tarmac’ beach. The old beach may have come in for a fair amount of criticism over the years, but it is easy to forget what an important role it has served ever since it was installed back in the mid-‘80s. I’m sure some residents will recall the flooding that used to take place along the seafront, or how it wasn’t uncommon to sometimes find seawater as far back as John Street. The tarmac beach put a stop to that, and it has done a fantastic job of protecting more than 260 seafront properties for more than three decades. Now that the defences have reached the end of their natural life, the council and its partners are taking the opportunity to replace them with a more eye-catching design. You’ll see increasing activity at the town beach over the next few months as this work progresses, and will be able to find out more at community.alungriffiths.co.uk

I think we can all agree that ‘the Beast from the East’ certainly took a bite out of Bridgend County Borough last month. As temperatures plummeted to lows of -9.8 degrees, the council spread more than 860 tonnes of grit, treated 3,762km of road, re-stocked 450 grit bins, cleared snow from town centres and busy pedestrian routes, and ensured that daily care could be provided as normal at the homes of almost a thousand vulnerable elderly and disabled people. Council staff went the extra mile in ensuring that essential services could continue, sometimes literally – I know of workers who arranged to sleep on colleagues’ sofas or who walked several miles to help vulnerable residents, while many were out working in the freezing conditions at all hours. Burst water pipes at schools and sports pavilions also caused disruption. There was major damage as ceilings collapsed and electrical wiring became soaked, and a great deal of work has been undertaken to make the buildings safe again - although the damage was so extensive in some cases that repairs are still underway. Nevertheless, well done to everyone who made such a brilliant effort to keep people safe from ‘the Beast from the East’.

PORTHCAWL INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE TRYING NOT TO CONNECT YOU We all have had the experience of nuisance phone calls, now more than ever with many of us tethered to our phones it seems as if companies can reach out to us whenever they want. Since 2013 OFCOM and the Information Commissions Office have been working to stem the tide of nuisance callers. The update to their plan, released in February 2018, outlines the progress they have made so far. These include blocking measures on numbers guilty of repeated offences, enforcement measures to punish companies making nuisance calls and increased intelligence sharing between various agencies to stay on top of the ever changing situation. All in all their efforts are having an effect. Modern technology is a wonder, and the connections it allows us to make and maintain across the world is an astonishing accomplishment. However, there are always those who seek to take advantage of innovation. It is good to see that the authorities seem to be making progress on punishing those who do, allowing us to stay connected with friends and family, safe in the knowledge we won’t be pestered by anonymous salesmen looking to exploit the connectivity of the modern world. Ten Pledges Project update Many pavements across town are in dire need of repair. We have pledged to repair the worst using town council funding. The independent councillors in your ward will be bidding for work to be done against a scoring criteria currently being developed. Another one of our pledges will result in extra grass cutting on a number of verges across town coming into effect this spring. What’s happening generally? Zeus will need to continue with his training to build up his social skills with other dogs. He is not used to being left, so new owners would need to work on gradually building this up. Zeus is looking for an active home where he will get of physical and mental stimulation, and training classes would help with this as he is eager to learn. ANDROMEDA GALAXY SAME SIZE AS MILKY WAY For decades astronomers have believed that the Andromeda galaxy is two to three times bigger than our own Milky Way galaxy. However, by using a new technique to measure the escape velocity of Andromeda it now seems that both galaxies are similar in size - around 800 billion solar masses. The two galaxies dominate a cluster of 30 galaxies known as the Local Group, which spans around ten million light years. Andromeda and the Milky Way are separated by a distance of 2.5 million light years and will merge in 4 billion years time. Scientists used the movement of high-velocity planetary nebulae within the Andromeda galaxy to calculate the speed required to escape the gravitational pull of the galaxy and found it to be around 470 +/- 40 kilometres per second. A similar technique was used in 2014 to determine the mass of the Milky Way. It was also found that the Milky Way contained less dark matter than previously thought - a result which has also been found for Andromeda by the new research. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES A Christian charity (Barnabas Fund) suggests we are in danger of losing our freedom of speech, and particularly our religious freedoms. They are calling for seven foundational religious freedoms to be safeguarded: Freedom to read Scripture in public. Freedom to interpret Scripture without government interference. Freedom of worship. Freedom to choose or change your faith or belief. Freedom to preach and try to convince others of your beliefs. Freedom to establish churches, synagogues, mosques, etc. Freedom from being required to affirm a particularly worldview or set of beliefs in order to hold a public sector job or stand for election, work in professions such as teaching and law, or study at university. The freedoms mentioned here are in real danger of being eroded. In reacting to extremist ideologies we are in danger of over-reacting and not allowing people to choose their beliefs for themselves. I grew up with the saying “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”. It matches the words of the bible hero Joshua “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve” (Deut.24:15). True faith is personal faith, let’s seek to preserve our freedom to believe. Rev. MINI-MYSTERIES In September 1912 Charles Dawson, a respected country lawyer, made a shocking discovery. He found a prehistoric humanoid skull in a gravel pit near Piltdown Common, Sussex. The skull proved Charles Darwin’s 1859 Theory of Evolution. Or did it? Dr Arthur Smith Woodward of the British Museum joined Charles Dawson on his archaeological dig. Together, they found fossilized bone fragments, flint tools and fossilized teeth. Experts were called in and they confirmed that Piltdown Man was half a million years old and the missing link between ape and man, a fact they announced to the British public on 18th December 1912. However, in November 1953 a group of palaeontologists tested the skull and pronounced it a fake. The skull was indeed human, but the teeth and jawbone came from an orang-utan. Who perpetrated the hoax? The prime suspect is Charles Dawson, a man ambitious to prove his credentials as a geologist. But what of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (pictured), a man interested in science, a neighbour of Dawson’s and the creator of Sherlock Holmes? KPC YOUTH & COMMUNITY WILL BE 20 IN 2018! KPC was formed as a charity back on 28th March 1998, with ‘the doors’ open to young people on 28th November 1998. We are proud to be celebrating it’s 20th Birthday of working with young people and our local community, and a celebration will be held later in the year. We would love to have some input/anecdotes and stories from past members, staff, volunteers, and supporters on what KPC has meant to them over the years (see attached) and would love to get some feedback on how we have impacted our local community. We’d also like to pass on a thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years and helped us reach this fantastic milestone! U3A stands for the University of the Third Age - a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly, relaxed environment. With winter behind us and as signs of spring abound, the programme at Porthcawl U3A is warming up too! March was a packed month. At our well attended Annual General Meeting at the Hi Tide we packaged the formal proceedings in an interesting and informative wrapper, with delightful entertainment provided by singer-guitarist Ivor Williams who trotted out some singalong favourites. The popular monthly talk offered food for thought as it tackled the topic of atheism. Our Sunday Lunch Club met at the Lorelei; and there was an excursion to Corsham Court, a c16th country estate near Chippenham. All in addition to our regular interest group meets at easily accessible venues across Porthcawl covering 42 different activities from creative writing to crafts; painting to photography; singing to scrabble. New interest groups are starting up regularly - last month saw the first meeting of our new Wildlife Group, which is looking and learning about life on the local seashore, in woods, sand dunes, ponds, and in our gardens. On December 25th, we as a unit took part in the Porthcawl Christmas Swim (we also helped raise money there with fundraising buckets). Due to the sponsorship and fundraising over that day we raised just over £1000. From the Sainsbury’s bag packs we ran towards the end of 2017 along with Meningitis Now, we managed to raise approximately £600. Upcoming events that the explorers are participating at are bag packs on April 28th and May 28th in the co-operative, with plans for more fundraising activities for us to do before we go to Kandersteg this summer. We’re approximately halfway to our target of reaching £9000, with many opportunities to raise more money. TRINITY CHURCH We are entering a very busy time of the church calendar with Easter fast approaching. During the season of Lent we have held special services and also Bible Studies. We are pleased to announce the arrival of our first Messy Church sessions. These are fun, interactive sessions for all children under 10 years and will be held every 3rd Sunday of the month between 2 and 4 pm. There will be toys, games, books, Arts and Crafts, painting and singing for the children to enjoy. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 455 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during February. We dealt with 2 logged incidents and monitored 2 incidents. We logged and monitored 147 commercial vessels, 108 leisure vessels, 1 military vessel and 21 others. We held a Social Evening at Porthcawl RFC in February, which raised money for our station and for the Mayor’s Charity. Thanks to Porthcawl RFC for their hospitality and ‘Arlington Road’ for providing the music. We will be hosting our biggest fundraiser yet in April - a Gala Concert at All Saints Church Porthcawl on Friday, April 20th at 7pm. The headliners are Porthcawl Male Voice Choir, Porthcawl Comprehensive School Junior Choir and choirs from St. Clare`s School and Nottage Primary School. The special guest soloist is Charlotte Vaughan, a Welsh actress and singer, whose musical theatre credits include ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, where she played the role of Carlotta at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the West End. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT We have said goodbye to our Chair – Harold Phillips. After four years as Chair to the Talbot’s Board of Directors, Harold has retired, and he and his wife have moved nearer his home in the Midlands. We had a ‘bit of a do’ to thank him for his help and advice throughout the last few years, and to wish them both well in their new venture. Harold was presented with a bottle of whiskey from the incoming Chair, Mike Kearn, and a suitably inscribed hip flask, in which to keep his whiskey, by the Talbot’s Chief Exec, Cheryl Butcher. As the couple were about move house, a bouquet of flowers was not deemed appropriate, so Cheryl gave Ann a big metal daffodil to plant in their new garden so that they can think kindly of Wales when they sit out in the sunshine. Our next outing is planned for the middle of May when it is hoped a coach party will leave for a trip down the Brecon/ Monmouth Canal with afternoon tea served on the canal barge. Legal advice HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY FOR COUPLES WHERE MONEY IS CONCERNED Recent research has shown that as many as one in five people are “financially incompatible”; that a lack of shared financial goals has put a strain upon their relationship and that they wish that they had been more open and honest about the topic earlier. Discussions are vital, as the financial landscape is changing. Increasingly, people are employed on zero hours contracts and the “gig economy” is gaining precedence. Also, in the advent of the digital world, secrecy is possible, as people are able to bank privately using a smartphone app or can develop a costly online gambling habit without their partner ever knowing. There are broadly three ways that couples bank and pay for household bills: share everything using a joint account, use a joint account for bills or maintain separate accounts. If you value your financial independence, you may not want a joint account, in which case you will need to be vigilant about who pays what. However, if your partner is secretive, you will not have a sense of what they have and what they spend. If you close your personal account and hastily open a joint account with a new partner, you will be liable for any joint debts which are run up on that account. Another disadvantage of choosing the joint account option is that upon separation it could be difficult to ring-fence your salary or pay important bills. In order to avoid difficulties, it is important to establish financial goals early on and to keep the channels of communication open throughout the relationship to make sure that you are still on the same wavelength. WHAT IS A CONSENT ORDER? A consent order is a financial order that can be issued by the court when a divorcing couple have reached financial agreement between themselves. If you and your spouse can reach agreement between yourselves, you should always have this made legally binding by getting a consent order. The consent order makes the agreement legally binding. Once a consent order has been finalised, neither of you will normally be able to make a new financial claim against the other Negotiating an agreement is almost always preferable to arguing things out in court and asking a judge to decide. If necessary, you can get help from your lawyers or use mediation. Without a consent order, there is always a possibility that your former spouse will try to make a claim later, there is no limit to how long after the divorce this can happen. Even if you and your partner draw up an agreement between yourselves, this does not have the same effect as a legally binding financial order from the court. You can apply for a consent order at any stage after the decree nisi has been granted. It can be a good idea to get the consent order before the divorce is finalised with the decree absolute. The consent order should include: • Your home - whether it will be sold and the proceeds divided or ownership transferred to one of you; • how other assets such as savings, investments or business interests will be dealt with; • what will happen to personal possessions such as furniture; • how any pension schemes will be shared; • child maintenance for any children; • whether one of you will pay the other spousal maintenance, and for how long; • who will take responsibility for any outstanding debts; • an agreement that neither of you can make a claim as a financial dependant when the other dies. You will both need to complete a statement of information form summarising what capital and income each of you have. These are sent to the court together with the draft consent order and a £50 court fee. The judge will check whether the terms of the agreement are fair and legal. The judge may want to ask a few questions – either in writing or at a hearing – if the agreement seems excessively one-sided. Once the judge is satisfied, the consent order is ‘sealed’ and becomes legally binding.

Women’s institutions BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS WALK COASTAL PATH

Some of the members of Bridgend Soroptimist Club who defied winter temperatures and took part in a bracing walk on the seafront at Porthcawl to mark International Women’s Day and 100 years since the start of the Suffragette Movement. Starting at Coney Beach they walked the section of the Wales Coastal Path as far as Rest Bay before adjourning for a welcome hot cup of coffee at The Atlantic. At a recent supper/speaker meeting held at The Heronston Hotel retired Traffic Police Officer Steve Gorwill entertained our ladies with many tales of his experiences with the Force, some were thought provoking but most were of a hilarious nature. A very pleasant evening indeed with good food and humour. The next supper/speaker meeting will take place at 6.15pm at The Heronston when the guest speaker will be Emma Anthony from Ty Hafan. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS As I write this the snow has at last disappeared hooray! We did have to cancel a committee meeting but that was all. At our last meeting we were very pleased to welcome Councillor Norah Clarke and Storm, a young dog hopefully to be soon starting his training to be a Guide Dog. Norah has been a puppy walker for Guide Dogs for many years and gave us a most interesting and informative talk about all aspects of their work. We have enjoyed our 64th Birthday luncheon at the Grove and our games and poetry groups have been in action. Our meeting this month is on April 11th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Ceri Joseph will guide us round “Local Castles”. PORTHCAWL WI Hello everyone. I hope you all survived the snow. Lots of people were sledging on the field opposite me. Our annual auction in January went very well. Our members brought in some super items to auction off and we made a good profit. In February our WI enjoyed an enlightening talk on the Emmaus Charity by the director Mr Tom Clarke. NEWTON WI Our March meeting incorporated a celebration of St. Davids Day. The evening began with the usual GFWI Correspondence, lots of organised events to look forward to, including the Annual Council Meeting at Port Talbot. When the business of the meeting ended a feast awaited. Leak and potato soup with French bread followed by Welsh cakes, tea or coffee. It was a delicious meal, thanks to the President and committee members for all their hard work. The meal was followed by a St. Davids Day quiz and a few games of bingo to complete the evening. A very enjoyable meeting. During the evening we were privileged to have a visit from the ‘Welsh Dragon’, he was very friendly and in the capable hands of Jill George. The speakers at our February meeting were Bethany and Rachel of ‘Maples Chocolates’. They have been in business six years and sell a wide variety of chocolates with amazing fillings catering for special diets and occasions. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Spring is in the air at last, as we once again held our monthly meeting in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill, usual time 2p.m. to 4.30pm. Turn out good, good weather has a great effect on making members want to enjoy an afternoon with friends not forgetting tea, coffee and biscuits. Meeting chaired by our vice president, minutes and correspondence read by our secretary. Members agreed that our lunch last month in the Grove was a great success. Future events and outings discussed including our Link Meeting, which we are hosting in April. Our interest group are up and running, scrabble and craft both doing well, held in the Life Centre Pyle on the 1st and 4thTuesday of the month 2.30p.m. To 4.30.p.m. Our competition for April is going to be an Easter Bonnet so the craft ladies are going to be busy. Our speaker Sian Roberts, whose topic was Loving Welsh food, was entertaining and informative. And enjoyed by all. All of our club members are very busy at the moment with the preparation needed for the forthcoming plant sale, which is being held on Saturday 5th May. There will be a wide range of plants to buy including a selection of bedding plants as well as perennials. The sale is open to the public and there will be some good bargains available! All the proceeds from the sale go towards maintaining our lovely old club building. We are also busy with our own gardens and all the spring tasks that need to be done. There are all the usual essential tasks such as weeding but also the seasonal tasks such as beginning the lawn care programme for the year. Now is the time that spring really gets underway with something new in flower almost every day – tulips, primroses to name but a few and, of course, the fresh foliage that is appearing everywhere is so bright and lush. Some of us ‘old timers’ in the gardening world are also always a bit wary during the month of April as this is when a sudden sharp frost can strike. The protective fleece is always near to hand. CEFN CRIBWR GARDEING CLUB “April weather – rain and sunshine both together” Lovely! But warmth and rain will bring about a huge increase in pesky slugs and snails which make a beeline for new plants, so concentrate your slug destroying efforts on these rather than every plant in your garden! Slugs hate caffeine. It causes them to produce an excess of slime which dries them out preventing them from moving onto, and eating, your precious plants. Spreading coffee grounds around new plants will stop them having lunch! Time to plant lily and summer flowering bulbs now in pots, these make a fab display, beware though mice and squirrels love them too, best to cover the pots in chicken wire to prevent them being dug up and eaten! If you have unruly pampas grass with dead stalks that are tricky to remove, burn it down, the root will remain and the plant will re-grow. Beware though pampas is very flammable - keep your hose to hand! Did you know – peppers and chillies need sulphur to grow healthily. Place two or three unused matches under the roots, as the plants grow, the roots will feed of the sulphur producing a bountiful crop –magic! Chris Early

Depression in men is sadly not uncommon and due to stigma often goes untreated. In men, depression can develop into a serious medical condition. Many men try and deal with it on their own and don’t feel able to open up to relatives and friends, in fear of looking ‘weak’. Consequently, this means that men suffering with depression and poor mental health can be at risk of suicide. Andy’s Man Club is a talking group for men, that was started by the mum and brother-in-law of Andy, a 23-year-old rugbyplaying father of one from Halifax who sadly took his own life in April 2016. Andy’s family knew he had suffered some personal difficulties, but they hadn’t realised how bad it had been. Tragically, it’s a common story: suicide is now the biggest killer of young men in the UK, with around 4,500 male suicides every year. Andy’s s Man Club is a space for men to talk about their problems without judgement or feeling like a burden. What started as a small support group in Halifax has ballooned into a Facebook group of thousands, with the hashtag #itsoktotalk going viral on social media. Andy’s Man Club Bridgend is currently the only group in South Wales. They meet at 7pm every Monday at Porthcawl Rugby Club and welcome any man that needs to talk. Saturday April 14th is the Stroke Association’s Know Your Blood Pressure Day and the Rotary Club of Porthcawl are offering free blood pressure checks from 10am - 4pm at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to over 50% of all strokes. These strokes could be prevented if high blood pressure was controlled. As high blood pressure often shows no symptoms, many people are unaware that they have it and routine blood pressure screening in the community is therefore very valuable in detecting it. Tests will be administered by health professionals who are trained to identify potential problems and advise on appropriate action. PORTHCAWL TEENAGER RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM!

Friday 13th to Sunday 15th April 2018 The 18th Annual Event at the legendary Grand Pavilion.

A local girl is releasing her debut album on her 16th Birthday. Musician, Singer, Songwriter ‘Layla John’ from Porthcawl, is releasing her debut album ‘OneFiveEight’ on 3rd April 2018. Influenced by bands such as Blink 182, Sublime and No Doubt, she writes her own songs, sings, plays guitar and bass on all the tracks and has also recorded and mixed all the tracks herself on her home computer. Her Ska Punk sound has already received attention from the local music scene. Her debut EP CD ‘Caught Short’ is currently on sale in Spillers Records in Cardiff and a song from her debut album ‘S.M.N.E.’ has also been played on Wolfman Radio. She is also playing her first ever live solo gig at the Ancient Briton on the 3rd April 2018. Her debut album, as well as her previous EP and Single are available to listen too, download, stream or buy on Spotify, Apple Music, Google play etc and limited copies of her album will also be available on CD. CÔR MERCHED CWM LLYNFI SUPPORTING PROSTATE CYMRU The ladies of Côr Merched Cwm Llynfi are supporting the Prostate Cymru charity by performing in a concert in Kenfig Hill Rugby Club on Friday April 27th at 7.30pm. The choir will be joined on the evening by the youngsters of Mynydd Cynffig Primary School choir led by Mrs Kathryn Blight. Tickets for the concert priced £5 are available from the Rugby Club or the School. Côr Merched Cwm Llynfi, although based in Maesteg, have members from further afield. In fact four of the choristers travel from Kenfig Hill to Maesteg every week for rehearsals. The choir has a varied repertoire including songs from stage and screen and Welsh folk songs. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I don’t know what they put in the water of Porthcawl, but it keeps on producing good musicians. Nottage singer/songwriter Rebecca Hurn will be launching her new EP ‘Waves’, with a show at the Big Top, 11A Church Street, Cardiff on Thursday 12th April at 7.00pm. I’ve only had a sneak listen but it sounds really good, so get a ticket for her showcase and check her out! Another local muso to keep an eye and an ear out for is Sker’s keyboard maestro Dan Burton. Dan, whose dad played in local rock band Shy Warrior with my old butty Paul Child, has just signed a management deal, so things are on the up. Last year he did a British tour supporting his idol, 80s star Howard Jones. With plans afoot for the brilliant Newton Pop and Beer Festival in August, perhaps it would be good for the organisers to put these two acts on the bill instead of 8 hours of cover bands? BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS AT CAPEL TABERNACL

It’s an important year for Downwood Films, now believed to be South Wales’s oldest independent film company, as we will be celebrating our thirtieth anniversary in the autumn. The first film we made was a short promotional ‘corporate video’ for Novolor in Bridgend, and went on after that to produce ‘A History of Porthcawl’, which was to be the first in a long-running series of town history films, including Bridgend, Port Talbot, Maesteg and Penarth. We also produced our ‘feature’ dramatised documentary, ‘Ghosts of Glamorgan’. However, as Porthcawl was the first, and as it is where we’re based, this year there is going to be a follow-up, seen from a slightly different point of view. The new film will be shot soon, with an end of year release, and all our other films will be available as a celebration. Finally, I get interested calls regarding our film technique, and most regular readers of this column will already know that I favour shooting on 16mm or 35mm film, but we also use digital cameras and an in-house editing facility on promotional videos when required, which a lot of companies prefer these days for reasons of cost and time in production. COR BRO OGWR’S SPRINGTIME CONCERT Our spring concert features two classical works; Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’ and Mozart’s ‘Vesperae Solennes’. The former, written towards the end of Haydn’s life, was originally called ‘Missa in Angustiis’ - a Mass for troubled times - in 1797 Napoleon had crossed the Alps and was threatening Vienna. However on the day of its first performance, Napoleon was defeated by Lord Nelson and became associated with this. The work highlights soloists and chorus, particularly the soprano part, sung by Erin Alexander, who accompanied us on our recent trip to Germany and also sang in our Christmas concert. Don’t be fooled by the title of the Mozart; it is mainly an exuberant piece with a well known movement ‘Laudate Dominum’ in the middle providing a quiet contrast. It’s certainly a powerful sing for the choir. Top notes will be hit!

Tabernacl Chapel, Pontycymer was the venue for the 100th Birthday Celebration Concert for Mrs Lena Charles, BEM. The Compere for the evening was Bridgend born, BBC news presenter & journalist, Huw Edwards, who regaled those present with a brief history of Lena’s contribution to the Garw Valley, and maintained throughout humour impossible to reveal very often in his newsreader ‘day job’. Keeping the content flowing, he was genuinely praiseworthy of all contributors during the evening, revealing his pride in his Welsh heritage throughout. The sell-out Concert opened with the award winning Bridgend Male Choir, under the baton of Musical Director, Ryan Wood and support team of Stephanie Bailey (Piano) and Scott Williams (Organ). The Choir entertained with both robust and quiet singing, revealing a diversity in content and sound, which found favour with an appreciative congregation. Interspersed between the male choir’s contributions were the Blaengarw Primary School Choir and Angharad & Meinir, a versatile harp and vocal duo. Huw Edwards commenting on the clarity of diction and musicality of the pupils with ‘Angharad & Meinir’ a joy to hear and also receiving much praise as a contrast. Arts & music LOCAL YOUNG MUSICIAN IS SO CLOSE!

The District Final of the Rotary Young Musician competition was held last Saturday at Islwyn High School in Blackwood. Local flautist, Samuel Finch from Archbishop McGrath Catholic High School had won through to the event by winning at Rotary in Porthcawl Club level and then at the Area Heats and was up against seven other Area winners from the 68 clubs in District 1150, which covers a large area of South and West Wales. Reprising his winning pieces, Poulenc’s Sonata for Flute and Piano 1st Movement and Bach’s Flute Sonata in E major 1st Movement, Samuel came so close in repeating his earlier successes but was beaten into second place by harpist, Eve Price who had been sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Aberdare, Llantrisant and Rhondda. Samuel’s achievements so far have helped him to hone his musical skills to a high level of musicianship and should be congratulated on his performance at the competition. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We held our Annual Malcolm Nugent Portfolio Competition on Thursday 22nd February at St Clare’s School, Newton. Each member could enter a set of four prints or four digital images into the competition; one from each of the following genres: Abstract, Landscape, Nature and People with 16 members entering. Jenny Hibbert skillfully judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each of the 64 entries. Congratulations to Richard Craze who was the overall winner with 4 excellent prints scoring 74 out of a possible 80. Tied in second place with 72 points was Heather Roper and Geoff Baker with William Baker next with 69 points. There were some excellent entries again this year. Sport reports REST BAY MASTERS

The end of January saw Rest Bay SLSC once again taking part in the Welsh Stillwater Championships held at Swansea Wales National Pool. This time it was our Junior and Master teams competing, with 20 clubs taking part over two full days. Competitors took part in both individual and team events. After a small team entered in 2017, there has been overwhelming interest in the Masters section with regular Wednesday and Thursday swim sessions. This continuing growth has meant that this year we were able to go with a stronger team of which members ages range from 30-50+ years. It was a fantastic event with a great atmosphere between all clubs and competitors. The team put in 100% and we had fantastic results on both days. It was even more outstanding when you take into consideration that for most of the competitors it was their first competition. This is an outstanding achievement, and the club is immensely proud of their commitment and determination. There was so many parents who helped support the team over the weekend, time keeping and organsing. We are looking forward to competing once again in GBs Competition in Cardiff on 15th April. PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 7S The U7’s have enjoyed a fantastic first season winning most of their friendly games. More importantly, the 16 strong squad have had a lot of fun and have really gelled as a team. As coaches we are extremely proud of you. We are all looking forward to being flag bearers at the upcoming Ospreys v Leinster game and meeting all the players. RUNNERS MIXING IT WITH THE BEST Porthcawl Runners have once again been out in force with some outstanding performances and results across the board. The club’s athletes are now mixing it with the very best in the region on a regular basis and a special mention for Alun Williams, who posted a time of 1:25:50 to bag a top 65 finish from over 1,700 competitors at the Llanelli Half Marathon. Deb Goule is always a contender for the podium places and it was no different at the 114th Wales Cross Country Championships at Singleton Park in Swansea – bringing home a bronze medal in the Master Women 45 category. She enjoyed individual success in the West Glamorgan Cross Country League, too, ending the season as third female overall and first in her F45 age category. In the team event, the success of the men, led by skipper Will Edwards, was notable as they finished as the highest ranked Bridgend club in the area. Congratulations to Mark James and Dave Bennett who recently achieved their 50 and 100 parkrun milestones respectively – and also to the latest batch of graduates from the Couch to 5k programme, which was run by Owen Dobson in conjunction with South Wales Police. LA GALAXY FOR PORTHCAWL FOOTBALLER Local Swansea City Academy player Tom Tweedy has been selected to attend an all-expenses paid trip to California. Tom, 13, who plays for the U13 and U14 squad of SCFC Academy has been selected for this oncein-a-lifetime trip departing at the end of March. LA Galaxy have provided the trip for the Swansea City players to attend and once there, they will play in an international tournament with clubs from all around the world and Manchester United, the only other UK club to attend. An all expenses paid trip is a fantastic opportunity at such a young age and Tom cannot wait to depart. Tom attends Porthcawl Comprehensive School and juggles school life with the demands of a young Academy footballer. He trains five times a week and plays across the country on the weekend. As parents, we are extremely proud of the commitment and dedication Tom shows and wish him well for this exciting opportunity. Alyson Tweedy

PORTHCAWL TOWN MINIS AND JUNIORS NEWS

It’s getting to the end of the 2017/2018 Season and a lot has been happening at Porthcawl Town Athletic Minis and Juniors. Our Minis (Under 7- Under 11) have been busy building their football skills in the non-competitive Minis, while the Juniors (Under 12-Under 16) have been working hard to gain those points in the competitive Juniors league. All can agree, whether you’re a Mini or a Junior player, you’ve had some great times with your friends! Our U 12’s Blues recently won the U12’s knockout Cup! It was an exciting game with a result well deserved by the team and coaches. We are closing our Season with a Minis Football Festival at Rest Bay on Sunday June 10th from 10am in the morning. PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB NEWS By the time you’re reading this, the nights will be lighter and officially summertime will have begun! Bring on the warm weather! Our members have been busy honing their fitness and lifesaving skills over the winter, and will have hopefully returned to beach training on a Tuesday night, as well as Sunday afternoons. The regular Pyle pool sessions will still be taking place on Friday evenings, so you’ve got plenty of chances of popping along to join us. We always welcome new members, and if your Child is 7 or older, please give us a try. We’ve got to say a huge thank you to some very generous donations recently. Firstly, the Coney Beach Charity Fund, who donated £300 from the Bonfire night celebrations. Also, the Xmas Morning Swim Committee who kindly donated £250. We really are overwhelmed by your support, the funds will really help ensure that the equipment we use is up to date, and best suited to our younger members, so they can train and compete safely and effectively. SURF REPORT - SOUTHERNDOWN AND OGMORE BY SEA Over the Months of February and March we have had a few days of offshore winds and good surf. I visited and filmed one of the local reefs mid March, which was breaking well but not perfect, with a strong south easterly wind across it and too much south west in the swell. Our local shingle banks seemed to have scattered and spread out with one of them throwing a barrel for ¾ of an hour of the tide and the rest of them breaking really fat without the long peeling clockwork rights we have been used to. The evenings are drawing out now as the daffodils reach for the blue skies and the birds are singing for a mate. The first days of March we were hit by Gales and drifting snow. Across the country were snowdrifts and deep snow preventing birdlife from feeding so they had to ride the winds to our shores where the snow was blown off the surfaces enabling the birds to feed. I set out to film these birds feeding by the sea and you can You Tube search ‘Birds on the edge of the snow at Ogmore by Sea’. Sadly after the thaw over the next few days many Lapwing, Redwing and Plover were washing up dead on our beaches. David A. Batten www.tuskasurf.com
