SEASIDE ALGAE

CREAM TEA WITH BUBBLES!

Dear Editor, Can we just put this to bed about the article in the July issue that a MR J Jenkins commented on about the seaside steps and the algae that is on them. Can I just say they are not steps they are a water breaker and not put there for people to walk on but if they do, they do so at there own peril. Mr N Fearnley, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, Do you like helping your community, yet also love to have some fun? Like supporting local causes, enjoy a nice cream tea and buns? Then All Saints Church at 3 pm on Sunday the 1st of September, raising funds for LATCH and Sandville Is the date you must remember. Dainty little finger sarnies, home made scones and cakes and more! Tea and chat and friends and laughter, enough to make your jaw quite sore! And if that’s not enough on offer we have (to purchase as you dine) a mini bar to sell Prosecco G & T, red and white wine. The singer, she is quite outstanding! So good last year, we booked again! The whole affair was quite delightful (forgive me please for sounding vain). £10 a ticket’s all we’re asking (though if you want you can give more)! So if you want one please phone Sian Jones Porthcawl 771734. Sian Jones, Porthcawl

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES ARTICLE Dear Editor, I agree with Neil Harvey in his article Through Christian Eyes, in the July Seaside News. He said the early Christians were martyred for their faith in the resurrection of Christ, “testifying about it”. A stem of the Bible Greek word ‘martyr’ is translated ‘witness’. Christians spread their faith (and were persecuted for it) to all who would listen. Before his ascension, Jesus commanded true Christians to be “witnesses of me.... to the ends of the earth”. (Acts 1:8). C Brown, Porthcawl

Your views FUNDRAISING FOR PORTHCAWL FIRST RESPONDERS

Dear Editor, In recognition of the fantastic support her uncle Chris received by Porthcawl first responders Angharad Mair Evans was determined to raise funds for this organisation. On June 1st she climbed Pen y Fan holding a picture of her much loved uncle and was able to raise the sum of £500. Without the prompt response from this organisation Chris would have not been given extra time with his loving family. The whole family appreciate the work done by these volunteers who do make a huge difference to the people they serve Angharad was determined that in Chris’ memory she could raise as much as possible. ROAD IMPEDIMENTS Dear Editor, Once again, having recently visited friends in Porthcawl I note that the road leading into town from Pyle is in very good condition and that the road leading in from Newton has recently had a resurfacing of a very high standard. Is it not time that BCBC considered resurfacing a section of West Road - in particular, the south easterly side of the road leading in from Kenfig The section between Cae Ganol and Westfield Crescent is in a very poor state with areas of broken and crumbling surface. There are other areas with low set manhole covers, poor resurfacing following trenching and some quite low set drain covers - all of which result in vehicles getting quite a pounding as they proceed along that stretch. I also note that vehicles are tending to be driven along the centre of the road in that south east direction as drivers try to avoid unnecessary damage to vehicle suspensions by moving away from the worse of the road conditions. Nottage Mead was recently resurfaced yet the busy main road is left like a rally track. In addition, having also recently called in to the recycling centre at Stormy Down I note that neither BCBC or their agents Keir seem to have any interest in cutting back the vegetation that is causing an effective narrowing of the entrance after passing through the main gate. The kerb edges are practically entirely hidden from view and branches and brambles are growing so far out across the road that vehicles, again, are tending to use only the centre part of the road in order to try and avoid damage to paintwork. The branches of one tree are now hanging so low that they are dragging across the roofs of vehicles as they exit the site. Would BCBC and/or Keir be happy to pay out for repairs to vehicles when the risk of damages is far more easily avoidable? Lynne Hendra, Port Talbot

Family-owned mpn windows, doors and conservatories has become a member of a prestigious national trade body and have also recently become accredited as a which magazine trusted trader. Independent Network only accepts the country’s most professional window and door companies, and each one must undergo rigorous vetting before being allowed to join, and display the IN branding. Companies like MPN must then agree to continuous auditing to ensure they maintain that same level of absolute professionalism. Paul Webster, owner of MPN explained: “Independent Network imposes very strict criteria on its members; we must commit to using exceptional quality VEKA materials and every single one of our customers is given a customer satisfaction report to complete, which is sent directly back to the organisation – so they can make sure we are as good as our word when it comes to quality products and installations. “In this way, IN can be sure that we continue to operate to the highest standards and they are happy to offer our customers a fantastic ten year insurance-backed guarantee.

“This provides complete peace of mind for customers. They can rest assured that their investment is safe and protected, and they can see – at a glance – that we carry the Independent Network logo, which signifies that we’re among the top VEKA fitters in the UK. “We were award-winning members of the organisation for many years, back when it was known as Network VEKA, and then we changed PVC-U suppliers and were no longer eligible. “Although the quality of our products was still good, we are so committed to customer satisfaction that we decided to make the move back to VEKA PVC-U so that we could rejoin the network and offer our customers all the benefits that go with it. “Benefits include things like deposit protection, insurancebacked guarantees, finance options and a phenomenal choice of window styles and colours, to name just a few.” Independent Network’s Karen Lund said: “It’s been great to welcome MPN back to the organisation. The company has won numerous awards for customer satisfaction over the years, and we know that the team represent everything we want to see from an IN member. “They are committed to quality, service and professionalism, and I’m sure we’ll see them win even more customer satisfaction awards in the years to come.”

Local history MURDER!

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM CHARITY COFFEE MORNING

When you next walk through St John’s Churchyard, Newton look out for a Commonwealth Grave remembering Joan Norah Lewis. Joan died on 16th October 1943. Seems just another tragic loss to the war. Yet, Joan was murdered. Joan was born on 2nd May 1916, in Cardiff, the second of two daughters to Thomas and Annie Lewis. Thomas was an electrical engineer, which might have been the reason that he brought his family to live in Arlington Road, Porthcawl prior to WW2. The family immersed themselves into Porthcawl life, as the photo shows Joan on a Carnival float in the 1930’s. On the declaration of war, Joan did her duty and joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Eventually she was posted to Housel Bay, Cornwall. There she met and fell in love with Flying Officer William Croft, a married man with two children. On 16th October 1943, from the summerhouse of the R.A.F base, two shots were heard. Joan’s body was found the next morning. F.O. Croft admitted to the killing, citing a suicide pact, which he couldn’t follow through. Croft was charged with murder on 16th November 1943; but following an appeal his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. He only served a few years! Ceri Joseph

School reports WEST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL – SUMMER TERM

EXPERT INDIVIDUAL TUITION IN PORTHCAWL Expert Individual Tuition for GCSE and KS3 in the Porthcawl and Bridgend Area • 100% Success Rate • Many Years Experience • Proven Track Record • Commendations From Past Pupils • Enquires Welcome. Tel: 07711242560. A SUCCESSFUL education is key to a successful life. A good education with sound qualifications opens doors to career paths and opportunities others without qualifications can only dream of. That’s why it’s so important for parents to ensure their children get the right education, especially in the Key Subjects of English and Mathematics. Most schools have large classes and high pupil teacher ratios, and even with the best of intentions, pupils’ individual needs are often overlooked. Each of us learns differently, and at a different pace, and it is sometimes impossible for teachers of large classes to ensure that every child’s particular needs are met.

This term key Stage 2 has been continuing with their theme of ‘The Incredible Oceans’. Our pupils have investigated the impact of plastics in the oceans, have undertaken litter picks in our local area and written leaflets and letters to persuade others to use less plastic and to always recycle. This topic culminated in a campaign march by the pupils through Porthcawl, where pupils spoke to visitors to the area, local shopkeepers and handed out their persuasive leaflets about the damage being done to our oceans. For their next theme pupils will be learning about and campaigning for children’s rights. Meanwhile our Foundation Phase has been learning all about ’To Infinity and beyond’. The pupils have been on an alien evidence hunt through our woodland, designed their own planet and written letters persuading the alien to visit earth as it is such a wonderful planet. We held a special Father’s Day event where our dad’s, uncles, grandads or brothers were invited to join us to help us make spacecraft. The Space Dome visited our Year 1 and 2, who now have great understanding of the planets. If you have a pre-school age child and you’d like to visit our Early Years Unit, please feel free to call 01656 815510 and we would be happy to show you around.

TREMAINS HAS TALENT

This is where tuition can help. A tutor can quickly assess your child’s particular needs and tailor an individual education plan to suit each pupil. Tutors can spot an individual’s strengths and talents, and foster them, and can also identify particular needs that are often missed in larger classrooms, and sometimes remain unaddressed. So don’t leave your child’s education to chance. Top Tuition offers specialist tuition in the key subjects of English and Mathematics by highly-qualified experienced teachers and experienced GCSE examiners. We have a proven track record with many years experience, and a 100% success rate at GCSE. Our many positive testimonials off successful former pupils confirm our commitment to the highest of standards. What more could you wish for your child? We are here to help, whether it’s preparing your child for their GCSE Exams, or whether they need help to guide them through GCSE re-sits. We are proud that our many commendations off our former successful re-sit pupils confirm that they always achieve the grades they aim for. For advice regarding your child’s education, or to book a course of lessons in English or Mathematics, contact us at Top Tuition. We Are Here To Help. Please Telephone: 07711242560 Or mail your contact details to toptuition@mail.com

Tremains Primary School has held another evening of spectacular entertainment and friendly competition! For the last few weeks, children from Year 2 up to Year 6 have been auditioning for a place in the talent show final at the school. On Monday 1st July, seventeen acts and a group of Year 6 comperes performed at the ‘Tremains Has Talent’ evening in front of a packed audience and panel of independent judges. Mrs Morgan, teacher and event organiser, commented that ‘the children were really fantastic! We are so proud of their talented performances and the amount of time they have dedicated to rehearsing and perfecting their acts.’ Pupils performed for their families and friends and one winner was selected from each year group. The judges, Miss Kirsty Jones, Mrs Rachel Ashong Quinn and Miss Donya Jandaghi had the difficult task of choosing the winners from the talent. Winners were: Emily Morgan, Ella Fredericks, Josie Holmes, Natalie Self, Megan Hurley and Megan Morgan. Head teacher, Mrs Todd, describes the evening as ‘another great success’ and the school looks forward to future ‘Tremains Has Talent’ events.

Enterprise Troopers Regional Finalists! Pupils took part in the Big Ideas Wales, Enterprise Troopers competition following a whole school approach to enterprise. Four Key Stage 2 representatives attended the Regional final at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl in June and met with a number of judges to show their products and business model. Congratulations to Lowri Bentley who was awarded with Star Enterprise Trooper of the competition. Festival of Learning 2019 Pupils from Years 5 and 6 were inspired by the many wonderful projects and pupils work showcased in this years’ Festival of Learning. They were keen to share vital messages about the attitudes to our environment and were motivated to begin sustainable projects following the speech by Phil Williams. Little Voices Year 6 “Little Voices” have led a pupil research project on the issue of litter in the local community. They have undertaken research and evaluated responses to their questionnaires. The group have contacted the local council and planned a community clean-up day with the support of local residents. A Casey-Haimes Deputy Head teacher

They have been an absolute pleasure and have been fabulous in their various leadership roles as ambassadors, school council, Criw Cymraeg, Eco Committee and Mini Police. We are all very proud of the way they have led assemblies, nurtured our younger children and led events such as the Foundation Phase Sports Day. Additionally, they have made great progress academically. Thank you to all the parents who organised a fun – filled Prom (pictured below). Year 6 have been a fantastic year group and we wish them every happiness and success. Once again, lots of new families joined the school throughout the year and we have a record number of children attending the school. We can’t wait to welcome in our new Nursery children as we really do pride ourselves on being a happy, friendly, family - focused school. Have a great summer holiday everyone Jo Rowley Head Teacher

Deadline date for the September issue is: Thursday 15th August BRYNTEG SCHOOL NEWS

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL

What a happy and successful year we’ve had - full of laughter, fun and lots of learning! We had a wonderful end to last term with our residential trip to Llangrannog and visits to the Millennium Centre and Porthcawl Museum (well worth a family visit). An increased number of trips and visitors have really brought our learning to life this year. KS2 treated us to a brilliant production of Sleeping Beauty the Ugly Truth – what a hilarious and talented bunch! Our Year 6 leavers are fantastic; we’re so sad to see them go. 26 | seaside news

Brynteg School have a lot to celebrate, in particular our Expressive Arts Area of Learning has had a succession of fantastic events show-casing the talents and hard work of pupils. One facet of this has been a celebration of Photographic Art from our Sixth Form pupils. The exhibition took place in the No 11 Café Bar on Ewenny Road Bridgend and this was well attended on the 11th July. Ceri Howley, proprietor of the No 11 Café Bar said, “The quality of photography on display is outstanding and we are very proud to have been asked to promote the excellent artworks produced by the pupils.” Many of the artworks displayed were of the locality, featuring prominent and recognisable landmarks from Bridgend and surrounding areas. Pupils responded with individuality and personal styles. This quality impressed Madeleine Moon MP when she came to view the exhibition. Mrs Moon was challenged with the task of selecting an artwork for the school’s new ACE award (Art in the Community Exhibition). Faced with so much talent, two artists were selected and congratulations go to Dan Quick and Joshua Roberts from year 12. Four photographs were selected and will be displayed in Madeleine Moon’s office.

AFON Y FELIN Another year has flown past us at Afon y Felin in what feels like the blink of an eye. We have achieved so much as a school within one year, most importantly, achieving our Green Status from the Welsh Assembly Government. To finish the year off, Year 5 and 6 had a fantastic time in Llangrannog on their 3 day residential trip. Not only did they have the experience of trying out so many wonderful activities, such as archery, go karting, skiing and zip-lining, but they also had the opportunity to speak Welsh throughout their time there. Our Sports Day was a success with every child showing great dedication and sportsmanship, with team ‘Ysgol’ winning the Sports Day trophy, however the other two teams, ‘Afon’ and ‘Felin’ were very close behind. We ended the year with another beautiful and emotional Leavers Assembly, which was in the style of The Greatest Showman. Mrs Jones, our Year 5 and 6 teacher gave a very emotional speech and many tears were shed, but it wasn’t all sad, as the Year 6 children then went off for a fabulous afternoon in Jump Jam. We wish them all the success for the future. Nigel Hughes Leader of Learning

tournaments. Thank you to the organisers, coaches, referees and umpires for their invaluable work. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed. Well done to winners Lon Las, Cynwyd Sant and Sgêr respectively. Children also thoroughly enjoyed our sports day, a mixture of serious and fun events in addition to the BCBC swimming gala. The foundation phase celebrated Sali Mali’s 50th birthday whilst years 3 to 6 visited the Principality Stadium for a sponsored sit. The whole school went to Margam Park for their annual fun visit. It was excellent to see children of all ages enjoying themselves together. It has been lovely welcoming our new nursery children to our open play sessions. If you’re considering a bilingual education for your child please contact us.

The second half of the summer term at St Clare’s, Porthcawl was jam-packed as always with activities, sporting events and trips. Y6 enjoyed their week in Barcelona and then had another terrific week at Acorn Adventure with Y5 in Brecon. End of term trips/ visits included a visit from Tarmac, and trips to Bristol Zoo and Cardiff Museum for Prep pupils, whilst Seniors and Sixth Form went to Oakwood Theme Park. Our inaugural Nursery Graduation ceremony was a beautiful event, with the children in caps and gowns. We were blessed with dry weather for our Family Fun Day. Our annual Prize Day was followed by our Summer Exhibition, showcasing the work of our talented A-Level and GCSE Fine Art, Graphic Design and Textiles students, with Guest of Honour the Mayor of Porthcawl. In the meantime, more investment and refurbishment will continue throughout the holidays. We will be able to share news of our A-Level and GCSE results success in the next edition. To find out more about the difference a St Clare’s education can make for your child, visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk or just get in touch with our friendly Admissions Team who are available throughout the summer on (01656) 789966. NURSERY OF THE YEAR OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY

YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR

Numerous children have been presenting in various events this term. We’ve showcased their ‘microbit’ trackers, our health and wellbeing projects and shared the Maid of Sker’s story with the WI. Our pupil voice committees have presented their work to parents, staff and governors. This work has led to numerous successes this term - the Rights Ambassadors achieved UNICEFs Rights Respecting Silver Award, the Health and Wellbeing Committee achieved the Bridgend Healthy Schools Step 5 award and the Criw Cymraeg achieved the first Silver Welsh Language Charter award in the consortium. Well done all! It was an honour to welcome schools from all over South Wales to the school for our inaugural rugby, netball and football 28 | seaside news

I thought it was important to share our news. We were shortlisted in April for the National Day Nurseries Association Nursery of the Year Award. Out of 190 applications and 6500 votes. We came top in Wales and won the prestigious National Winner for Wales 2019. We are so delighted and honoured to be chosen. We had to have an unannounced inspection from NDNA who scrutinised the nursery and the website/Facebook to ensure our credibility was sound. The Inspector produced a report, which was sent to a national judging panel, which then had to look at parental votes to clarify and validate our position. We attended Chesford Grange, Warwickshire for a black tie event and took the whole team. 20 of us! We were described in the awards by a BBC presenter who said: “This nursery provides a calm atmosphere and focuses on the health and wellbeing of its children, judges praise it as an exceptional, caring and thoughtful nursery that has a strong working relationship with both parents and the wider local community”. We are absolutely elated to receive such a wonderful accolade and to think our little nursery in the small rural village of Penyfai is classed as the best in Wales is something to shout from the rooftops!

ST CLARE’S SUMMER ART SHOW

The art and design department at St. Clare’s would like to say a huge thank you to pupils, parents and friends for attending our Summer Art Show. We are very proud of our talented artists and designers and delighted so many people attended the exhibition. Pupils worked in various media, including textiles, printmaking, digital design and film making, showing the diversity of talent that we have here at St. Clare’s. The recycled wedding dress made from plastics, which featured in the exhibition, designed by Chloe Atkinson, will be on display at the ‘The Grand Pavilion’ in Porthcawl for the Gala Dinner. You will be able to see this from the first week of September 2019; this is in conjunction with ‘The Porthcawl Fashion and Food Festival Show’. We would like to wish you a well-earned relaxing summer break and we look forward to welcoming you back in September for another exciting year! Follow us on @stclaresart to view more work from the show and our see our film made by Ms Trenoweth. Currently the art block is having a major refurbishment, look out for updates on Instagram throughout the summer! Mrs Willliams, Mrs Trenoweth and Ms Williams

CYNFFIG NEWS

I am delighted to congratulate pupils and staff on achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag award. Our eco committee was praised for their ‘brilliant commitment’ and ‘outstanding community engagement’. Pupils have worked tirelessly on weekly litter picks, plastic recycling and a uniform recycling scheme. We look forward now to making Cynffig more ethical and environmentally aware. Congratulations to all pupils who attended the County Athletic Championships. There were three podium placers: Jordan Harris 3rd in the Long Jump, Mia Lunn who qualified for the 100 meters and came 3rd in the High Jump and Tom Atwood who won the 800m race with a PB and qualified for the Welsh Championships.

Congratulations too to Eli Cowan who won 1st in Discus, Tom Atwood 1st in 800 meters and Mia Lunn 2nd in High Jump in the NASUWT Championships. Cynffig’s Tennis Championship was a brilliant finish to a summer of tennis that has seen over a hundred pupils attending lunchtime tennis club. Jake Harries defeated Matthew Watkins in the final of the U13 event whilst the U15 event was won by Tom Gardner who beat Ellis Hayward. Finally I would like to extend an invitation to all to celebrate our pupils’ success at Cynffig’s Presentation Evening on Wednesday 11th September. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

During the summer term, year 5&6 studied the exciting curriculum topic entitled ‘Summer Camp’. This is based around the creation of an original campsite on the school grounds with associated shelters, tents, food and songs. The children developed a variety of different skills including research, planning, innovation and working as part of a team. We also had an amazing visit the Wild Spirit Bush Craft Centre in Merthyr Mawr to engage in shelter building and camp craft activities during the day. We then hiked the 5 mile route back to school across the dunes in time for the end of school. This was a fun experience but a real challenge! All the skills were used in the preparation of their own campsite in which our younger pupils in year 3&4 were invited to join in the fun. We also had an amazing time during our Year 5/6 residential trip to Llangrannog. We enjoyed three days of outdoor and adventurous activities, which included quadbiking, climbing, archery, horse riding and a huge team building obstacle course! We enjoyed taking part in the Bridgend Festival of Learning. Our showcase focused on Thinking Hats and Thrive, we had so many visitors to our stand; our pupils made us so proud in sharing all the wonderful things that happen in Newton. Local news PROPER PUBLIC CONSULTATION NEEDED GREEN FLAG SUCCESS FOR WILDERNESS LAKE I am backing calls by Porthcawl Town Council for BCBC to hold a proper public consultation on plans to locate the proposed food store on land opposite the fire station at the northern end of Salt Lake. The council is concerned that the consultation being proposed by BCBC for the autumn will be for the whole regeneration masterplan and will not focus on the development brief for the new foodstore. I am opposed to locating the store at this end of Salt Lake as it will bring no benefit at all to shops in the town centre. The original plan to put the store at the Hillsboro Place car park, which would have had a better chance of creating some spin-off for local traders as shoppers could have walked through to John Street. My fear with this new location is that people will go straight there, stock up and then drive home without going into the town centre. Our high streets are struggling at the moment and anything, which takes trade away – as this scheme could do - should be resisted. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

COUNCIL URGED TO DECLARE ‘CLIMATE EMERGENCY’ Increasing numbers of councils and government bodies across the UK have responded to the escalating urgency of the climate crisis by declaring a ‘Climate Emergency’. Today, Bridgend Local Energy Group ( B-LEG) urges Bridgend County Borough Council to do the same. Pressure on governments is increasing. In May 2019, the Senedd took the decision to declare a Climate Emergency in Wales, adding to the growing list of towns and cities internationally. Some councils have specifically stated they want their authority to be carbon neutral by 2030. (Machynlleth was the first in Wales https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-46961053) A ‘Climate Emergency Declaration’ and supporting action plan would show that BCBC is committed to adopting strategies, policies and procurement processes fit for the future. B-LEG member, Kris Evans said, “By adopting a Climate Emergency Declaration, BCBC would join other pioneering councils in leading the way. “We simply cannot afford to hand this problem down to our children. By then it will be too late.” Supporting the B-LEG group, Sustainable Wales Trustee, Peter Morgan commented: “People from all walks of life, especially the young, are waking up to the disturbing immediacy of the climate emergency, and of the urgent need for action. Director Sustainable Wales, Margaret Minhinnick added: “Are we planning for a realistic future, one that must be carbon-neutral, renewable and sustainable? Or are we still living in the past, and planning for a carbon-based, consumerist and high waste economy?” Margaret Minhinnick Director Sustainable Wales

I was delighted to see Porthcawl’s Wilderness Lake, Maesteg Welfare Park and Coychurch Crematorium included among the areas that retained their coveted Green Flags for 2019. Each year, the flags are presented by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy to the best parks and green spaces across Wales. To achieve Green Flag status, an area is assessed on criteria, which includes the management of its heritage and conservation issues, how it handles sustainable resources, and whether it offers a welcoming, safe, clean and well-maintained space. Community involvement is also an important factor, and each of the county borough’s council-run Green Flag spaces is supported by volunteer groups, council workers and other individuals who share a common interest in looking after the sites. They all put a great deal of hard work into maintaining these areas, and the Green Flags are a fitting tribute to their efforts. Elsewhere, new sea defences at Porthcawl’s town beach have been completed and reopened to the public. This might have been an extremely challenging feat of coastal engineering, but I hope you’ll agree that the finished work looks fantastic, and that the defences are doing an excellent job of protecting the seafront area from flooding and coastal erosion. SHOWCASING PORTHCAWL TO THE WORLD I thought Porthcawl looked fantastic in all the media coverage of the recent Healthspan Porthcawl 10k. The event was hugely popular, and really helped to showcase the town to the wider world - well done to everyone who helped make it such a success. Events such as this, the Elvis Festival, the Seniors Open golf tournament or the AquaX power boat championship all demonstrate Porthcawl’s potential as a 21st century resort, and improvements such as the new town beach sea defences, the marina and the Jennings Building play a major part of this. Now work is forging ahead on the regeneration plans for Salt Lake, and I am really looking forward to seeing how this develops – watch this space. I hope local children are enjoying the summer break. There are still plenty of ‘School’s Out!’ activities taking place to keep them active and occupied, so there are no excuses for being bored. This year’s programme includes Active 4 Life and Park Lives sessions, Welsh language play schemes, outdoor theatre performances, swimming sessions and much, much more. The Summer Reading Challenge, meanwhile, is offering a ‘space chase’ theme featuring exclusive rewards – you can find out more about all of this at www.bridgend.gov.uk/schoolsout COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

BRIDGEND HAS GOT THE BOTTLE TO TACKLE WASTE Bridgend County Borough was thrust into the limelight recently when research commissioned by The Body Shop revealed that the area is the second-highest in the whole of the UK for recycling plastic on a per-head basis. This is excellent news and a hugely significant milestone, but it doesn’t stop there. According to Welsh Government statistics, since the scheme was introduced in 2017 we have recycled around 40,000 tonnes of waste and have prevented the release of 12,000 tonnes of CO2. Our recycled materials include 11,485 tonnes of organic waste, 6.659 tonnes of paper, 3,774 tonnes of glass, 3,265 tonnes of plastic and much more. With a current recycling rate of 69 per cent, Bridgend County Borough has already smashed the Welsh Government target of 64 per cent, and the new system clearly encouraging people to consider what happens with their rubbish. It’s fantastic to witness how recycling has been embraced by local residents, and now we are seeing developments like schoolchildren in the Porthcawl area coming together to try and unite the whole community as part of their ongoing ‘Love It, Don’t Trash It’ campaign. This is an excellent result, and I’d like to thank you all for your efforts.

THE PLASTIC CHALLENGE The need to rethink how we use plastic has increasingly come under the public and government spotlight. With an estimated 7.7 billion plastic bottles being used in the UK every year, and the existence of over 159 plastic bottles for every mile of beach, it has become imperative that a renewable alternative is found. Recent campaigns, such as National Refill Day 2019, have highlighted the cost of our plastic footprint and presented opportunities and solutions to the issues we currently face. National Refill Day 2019 pioneered the switch from single-use water bottles to reusable alternatives, making it possible to refill your bottle for free at Network Rail Stations. The aim is to scale this up across the UK, with refill sites expected to be introduced across every major town and city in the UK. The partnership between non-profit organisations City to Sea and trade body Water UK will help enable this step-forward in reducing our plastic consumption. You can download the app today and find your nearest refill station. Simply go to the website: www.refill.org.uk By using this app and refilling at your nearest station, an estimated billion bottles could be saved by 2025. JASON JAMES NEWS FROM THE MAYOR OF PORTHCAWL It has been a busy two months since becoming Mayor and I have attended many events supporting local organisations. It is encouraging to meet so many people who give their time freely for the benefit of our town, and I look forward to doing all I can to support them in the year ahead. Every year the Mayor has a committee of volunteers helping to raise money for local good causes; this year our main beneficiaries will be Prostate Cymru, Porthcawl Museum and Historical Arts Society and the newly formed Porthcawl Veterans Hub. We will be organising a series of events through the year to help raise money for these worthy causes – please look out for these, details at Facebook/Mayor of Porthcawl’s Community Fund, or via Twitter @MayorFund. Your support will be much appreciated. I will provide more updates in further editions of Seaside News. CLLR GRAHAM WALTER Mayor of Porthcawl grahamwalter@porthcawltown.co.uk

WAR HORSE

NIGHT TIME

I remember it well, as if yesterday, My master cried, but he had to obey. Uniformed men, they stole me that day, My future now destined, a land far away. Down to the port with thousands like me, Winched on a ship, our fate history. We landed in France, not knowing our worth, Paddocked together, no peace on earth. Shell blasts I hear, far away in the distance, All new to me, the night sky it glistens. That is the night, death hit home to me, A War horse my fate, that’s how it would be. The following day, a task I was given, Pulling a gun, it was so unforgiving. Mile after mile, slowly and tiring, Shells bursting overhead, brave men lay dying. Once at the front, harness undone, Back down the line, a hero unsung, Fed and watered, I lay down to rest, This foreign field would be my bequest. Four years I toiled, carnage abounding, Pulling the canon, gunfire resounding. I lost many friends to gas and shell, The smell of death, made heaven a hell. Peace came at last; it had taken its toll, Horses and men, many lost souls. The stench of death, with me forever, Brave men and horse in heaven together. We played our part in that abhorrent war, While enemy soldiers, spilled each other’s gore. I was taken by men to follow this course, Home I am now, a strong proud War horse. Arthur Cole

Its time for me to go to bed So I can rest my weary head There’s no need to count the sheep I will soon be fast asleep

MOANER We are a nation of moaners, We moan about all sorts of things, There’s none can deny that we do it, No matter what the day brings, The weather’s the topic most moaned about, Then your health, your work and your weight, We criticise and moan about others, But oh doesn’t it make you feel great! Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

Then I awake there’s an awful roar It’s right beside me And it’s a snore So I poke pinch and shove He then wakes up says What’s up hun! You are snoring is my reply I just as well sleep in a sty So with a snort and a great big moan Then turns over to grunt some more So I let him snore in peace I just have to admit defeat Grab my pillow and off I creep Into the spare room To get some sleep. Jan Thomas, Sarn

THE WALK I watch them pass each day With a nod and polite words Their white masked faces, unlit eyes Full of loneliness and futility. I watch each day as they return The same nod the same polite words No conversation, no recognition The tread of feet, the walk of steps Measured evenly through the day One day as I watched, I realised That one of them was me. Malcolm Price, Porthcawl

WALES His hair as black as night skies over Snowdon’s rocky crags. His eyes, deep blue like tranquil corrie lakes. His skin as rough-hewn as the cliffs of Southerndown. His hands and arms as strong and supple as the oak. His breath, the cool wind stirring up the ocean. His voice the roaring of the tide. His heart the life-blood of our nation, Beats strong so we can all be free. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

FOR MY BROTHERS (MICHAEL &JOHN) I wanted to write you a poem, But I didn’t know where to start I want it to be meaningful And come straight from the heart. Then I started thinking of times when we were kids, All the screaming and the teasing, and sometimes even kicks, Then I start to chuckle as I think about the past, But what we didn’t know back then, Is how quick the years will pass? But now we all are adults, And have family’s of our own, Long gone are those happy days when we all still lived at home, So I’m sending you this poem just for you to see how proud I am of both of you and how much you mean to me. Susan Edwards, Pyle

PIT OR PITY I’m down in a pit, but how came I this way? Was it nose in the air that I fell on that day? But why in a pit should I choose now to stay? For pit soon turns to pity, then ‘Pity Party’ away. But here from my pit I see hands reaching out. ‘We are here. Let us help you. You have only to shout. ‘Don’t fear we’ll condemn you, for we’ve all been this way. ‘It’s by grace we are standing; in God’s strength live each day.’ So I’ll not stay in my pit. Self pity be gone With the help of my friends I’ll step into the sun Now there is none to condemn me. There’s forgiveness for me. Christ has conquered the darkness and salvation is free. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL ROTARY NEW PRESIDENT Lucy is a very bright twelve-year-old Irish Terrier. Despite her age, she has lots of energy and therefore we are looking for an active home that can offer her lots of exercise. Lucy will need some time to settle into her new home and with a routine set in place this shouldn’t take long. She will need to continue her training around other dogs, as she can be selective about who she makes friends with. Lucy is looking for a quiet, adult only home where she can enjoy her retirement and all the home comforts. Canine Carer Gemma says, “Lucy is full of beans and is always enthusiastic. She is the ideal dog for those who like to go walking and exploring.” For more information on Lucy, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH An old Sufi story says a lot about finding God. “Help us find God,” the seeker begged the Elder. “No one can help you there,” the Elder answered. “Why not?” the seeker insisted. “For the same reason that no one can help a fish find the ocean.” God is a constant presence. In hard times we endure. In strength we thought we didn’t have. In confidence we thought we lacked. In hope and blessing we long for. How did we get through the nightmares we’ve known; the loss of someone dearly loved; the times when family life seemed out of control; the periods of loneliness and confusion? And what of the surprises when things we most worried about worked out after all. Or times when we were simply happy, whatever was going on. We’ll never know what we have if we don’t remember what we’ve known before. Named or not, we have known the divine presence. As the theologian, Frederick Buechner wrote: “God doesn’t sign the sunsets.” But God’s there – here, too, with us, all the time. God Bless, Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

PORTHCAWL ROTARY CLUB HONOURS CERI JOSEPH

TRINITY CHURCH

The Rotary Club of Porthcawl and invited guests recently gathered at The Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl to honour and present Ceri Joseph with the Paul Harris Fellowship award. Ceri taught History, English and Physical education at Hawthorn High School in Pontypridd and in her earlier days represented Wales in Hockey. Ceri became passionately involved in the Porthcawl Museum with husband Paul as Chairman and Ceri as secretary. Together they have helped to transform the Museum from the threat of closure in 2014 to a thriving Museum today. Ceri has written a number of books on the History of Porthcawl and often presents 1st class talks to many organisations in the Town. Ceri carried out 2 years extensive research in preparation for the WW1 exhibition that the museum successfully created. The exhibition created a huge amount of interest both home and abroad. The Paul Harris Fellowship award is only given in recognition to people who have done exemplary and outstanding work in support of communities both at home and abroad. The Club’s President Denzil Gould presented the award after giving Ceri a glowing citation. Well done Ceri, a very well-deserved award.

July has been a busy month! We have had a special cafe service held on the morning of the Porthcawl 10K run. Our Finance Chairman John ran the race on behalf of Action For Children. We are pleased to announce that he has raised £320 for the charity and many of our Trinity members cheered him on his way. We have also enjoyed our summer GAP meeting by taking part in the Jolly sailor quiz preceded by a meal and walk on Newton Dunes. Two teenage discos were arranged for 13th July and 3rd August and The July Messy Church date was Carnival weekend. The session was therefore planned around carnival themed activities and dressing up. The next session, with a summer holiday theme, will be on August 18th from 3 to 5pm. All children aged under 10 are welcome. The activities include painting, arts and crafts, games, stories and songs. This is a free activity, which runs monthly. Essential repairs to our roof are planned for the summer period but we hope to continue as many activities as possible and church services will not be affected. Trinity will also be holding activities in St Mary’s in Trecco during the week of 5th August. Alison Meredith Thomas Communication Secretary www.trinitychurchporthcawl.org

CHANCE MEETING

I met someone from my past. Hadn’t seen him since the day we left school. He asked if I had children. I answered, “Fifty three.” He said, “You were always hopeless at maths. You got ten wives or something?” “No, I am a foster carer. A boy or girl will stay with us for a short or a long time. Five weeks or ten years, they are all part of our family. Our own children grow up, leave home. They’re still our family, same with our foster kids. They leave but they know we’re always there to offer a helping hand. Like everybody there are times they find life a bit tough.” My acquaintance was puzzled. “You weren’t the most brainy kid in school. How did you qualify for that? It sounds so important.” “You don’t need exams to do this. You have to have common sense and the capacity to care. People say after you’ve had a child you’ll never be the same again. That’s true, and it’s even better having foster children. It changes you, makes you a fuller person. Should try it. You’re never too old.” “Tell me more” “Meet me here next time. I’ll tell you.” Written by a Carer Sent by BCBC Fostering Team 38 | seaside news

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES August is named after Caesar Augustus. He was given that honour in 8BC, following the precedent given to his uncle Julius Caesar with July in 44BC. The gospel writer Luke mentions Augustus in connection with the birth of Jesus Christ: that he issued the census decree in 8BC that was rolled out in Israel around 5BC and the reason Jesus birth was in Bethlehem and not his parents’ home town of Nazareth. (Luke 2:1.) Two famous calendar shaping men who lived at the same time but never met! Despite the popular story, it is not true that Augustus borrowed a couple of days from February to make his month 31 days, that’s a medieval fabrication. August was chosen to honour the emperor because a number of significant events in his rise to power happened in that month. I wonder what significant events we may experience in our live this August? Whatever you experience this August remember that Jesus Christ is quietly in the background, working out God’s purpose for the world, and for your life if you will let him be your Saviour and Lord. Why not take some time this August to seek out the presence of Jesus? Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL In June we dealt with 6 incidents and monitored a further 17. The logged incidents ranged from a downed kite surfer, to a dog cut off by the tide at the marina entrance. We are now becoming extremely busy monitoring the coastline through both our high powered binoculars and CCTV suite. So far in 2019 we have been involved with 44 logged incidents that involved one or more of the search and rescue assets. 5 of these were in the first week of July alone! 1,282 vessel movements were logged in June - another record month for us. Open water swimming seems to be more popular than ever this year at Porthcawl with large numbers gathering on the slipway to enter the water. As this is the marina entrance, we continue to monitor the swimmers in our area of view, hoisting the red and yellow “RY” signal flags to warn any approaching or departing craft to be aware of the activity. We urge swimmers to use a high-visibility tow float to make themselves more visible and reduce the risks to both parties. We have a small number of tow floats available at the tower, should swimmers wish to borrow one. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT Many of you visited our stall at the recent Pyle CC ‘Party in the Park’ day. We had a bottle tombola (a sell out) and jigsaw stall. Speaking to many people, it occurred to me that there are still a lot of people in the area who neither knows about the Talbot, nor indeed, where we are situated. You will find us if you turn left at the monument at the top of Kenfig Hill, in the large building which was originally the Talbot Institute. If you just pop into the foyer you will find that we have books and jigsaws on sale; if you come in even further, you will find our main Talbot Hall, big enough to hold functions, birthday parties etc. Our normal usage is twice weekly lunches, twice weekly bingo, plus various other groups such as Slimming World, Karate, Whist, W.I. etc. You are all very welcome to pop in and take a peak. We also have a few seats available for The King and I (Cardiff Millennium 9th January 2020) For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I have separated from my wife and wish to instruct a solicitor to deal with my divorce proceedings but I am concerned about how much it will cost. What can I expect to pay and will my wife have to pay those costs? Answer:I understand your concerns and no doubt, you wish to have some certainty over how much you will have to pay to start divorce proceedings. Many solicitors now offer a fixed for a Divorce if it is on an uncontested basis. As a firm, we do not offer public funding which is fairly limited these days. Some firms do have a public funding contract but the criteria to meet is stringent both on legal and financial merits. To assist clients who have to fund a Divorce privately, we currently offer a first initial appointment for up to one hour for £150 including VAT where we will discuss your case generally to include issues both in relation to Divorce, finances and any matters regarding children. If you wish to file for Divorce and the Divorce proceeds uncontested, we currently offer a fixed fee of £500 including VAT and £550 for the Court fee, total cost £1050. Sometimes, if a client is proceeding on one of the “fault” facts of either adultery or behaviour, it may be possible to recoup some or if not all of those costs from the other spouse. However, you should not bank on recovering such costs as it is customary to limit or withdraw the claim for costs at the Decree Nisi stage in order for the Divorce to proceed undefended and without any delays. The fixed fee however, covers only the Divorce and not advice regarding children or finances which is charged separately and usually on an hourly rate. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

DIVORCE FINANCES Are you facing the difficult decision of deciding what to do following a separation from your spouse. At DJM, we wish to make this process as straightforward and cost effective as possible for our client’s. To divorce, you must show that your marriage has irretrievably broken down. This will be based on one of five ‘facts’. The five facts of divorce are: 1. Adultery: Your spouse has committed adultery and you find it intolerable to continue living with him or her. 2. Unreasonable behaviour: there can include domestic abuse, infidelity or persistent unpleasantness. 3. Desertion: Your spouse deserted you against your will, and you have been living apart for at least two years. 4. Two years’ separation: You have been separated for at least two years, and you both agree to the divorce. 5. Five years’ separation: You have been separated for at least five years. You must also have been married for at least a year to divorce. Similar rules apply for ending a registered civil partnership. Where possible, you should agree between yourselves who will petition for the divorce and what the grounds for divorce will be. Finances will need to be agreed as a result of the marriage breakdown. Interim agreements can be made subject to a final agreement. The first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children. The parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support, known as child maintenance. The other key factors into account include: • Each spouse’s income • Any pension entitlements • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions to each other. Once you have reached an agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair to both parties. It also limits the ability of either spouse to make a claim against future income, capital and acquired assets. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order. Natalie Thomas DJM Solicitors 01656 772211 www.djm.law.co.uk

INHERITANCE AND DIVORCE A common concern of a separating couple is whether one party’s inheritance will have to be taken into account in any future financial settlement reached between them. It is understandably a cause for concern as the party who inherited the assets will strongly feel that they should retain them. There has been a spate of recent cases dealing with this point. Inherited assets are not automatically ring-fenced on divorce and will still need to be disclosed during the financial disclosure process. Such assets are likely to be regarded as an unmatched contribution by the spouse who was the beneficiary, and the court will then decide whether the inheritance should be shared and if so, in what proportions. This may depend on the nature of the inheritance and its value, and when it was received. As with contributions generally, they are likely to be more relevant in the case of shorter marriages, whereas with longer marriages their significance can decrease over time. Furthermore, finances tend to become entwined making the process of distinguishing between assets more difficult. Crucially though, the bottom line is that if the needs of the parties and any children in the family who are minors cannot be met without use of the inherited assets, the fact that the assets were derived from inheritance is unlikely to be a significant consideration for the court. In those circumstances, the court will distribute inheritance in the same way as any other assets of the parties, to ensure that needs are met. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Women’s institutions PORTHCAWL WI Our WI met on 27th June at 2.00pm when Reverend Clive Williams from Swansea gave us an interesting and humorous talk on classical composers. PEN-Y-FAI WI NEWS 45 members attended with 10 apologies sent for absences. The meeting was opened by Adele Hancock at 7:30 PM. a very interesting, sometimes funny, but very entertaining talk of a “policeman’s lot” by retired PC Steve Gorwel. He kept everyone enthralled and quiet for over an hour. How many men could that? A vote of thanks was given by Beverly Harry and a potted plant given by Sian Morgan. Luncheon Club Met on June 12th at Dockside Grill and Bar Porthcawl. The food and service was excellent. Thoroughly recommended but booking is necessary. Thanks must go to Margaret Williamson for arranging some marvellous places to eat. New members are always welcome to join our friendly ladies group. Lynne Wake

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI WI business was discussed at our last meeting and several invites to summer fayres were read out from our link members. We are all looking forward to our Denman trip and our summer trip to Craig y Nos. We have finalised our entries to the Glamorgan WI Show and the Autumn Quiz in the Hi Tide Porthcawl, which we all enjoy. Our competition this month was a pretty fun umbrella, the hall was full of amazing ones it was hard to pick a winner. Our speaker this month was Alan Thorne his topic was Assassination of JFK he had us enthralled with his theory’s and the amount of information he’d accumulated since JFK’s death, if there had been more time we could have listened longer as the time just flew by. Next month no meeting as we’re off to our summer trip to Craig y Nos, but in September we have Marianne Hartman her topic Exercises for the older generation so here goes we’re all going to turn out in Lycra but laughing aside if she can get us moving more and enjoying it as well we can all benefit from her topic. Tea and biscuits rounded off our meeting, hope to see you soon. Christine Callaghan

LALESTON WI We met on 4th July with 23 members present and 5 prospective new members. The delegates report from NFWI AGM at Bournemouth was read. Several items of interest were brought to the attention of members from the County News. Our stall at The Church Fete had been very successful and money being given to the church was up on previous years. Members who had attended GFWI Literary Lunch had enjoyed. Arrangements were made for our trips to The Brecon Canal and Cardiff Mansion House. We were having a Fish and Chip Supper in August and orders were taken. Names were taken of members wishing to see Owen Money on 17th October. Our Luncheon Club was to be 16th July at Llanewydd Arms. Oh how the time flies, summer is here and some of our plans have taken place. At the time of writing this article, we are still preparing for our stall on the rugby field in Porthcawl. We had a very fun day wrapping all the parcels for our secret parcel stall. I hope you supported us and chose a nice £1 gift. All the gifts were of very good value and worth more than a pound. Our handover at the Grove Golf Club was celebrated with an afternoon tea. We all enjoyed the camaraderie and good humour, as well as the food. Rotary invited us to their handover at the Fairways hotel. Judy’s husband Huw Moatt is the Rotary president this year. We all hope they enjoy their year leading our groups. This was another enjoyable evening. Judy led her first meeting and we are all looking forward to her exciting ideas. There will be no meetings in August but Elizabeth is hosting our summer garden party in her Nottage garden again. This event is always very enjoyable, and she works so hard for us. From all at Inner Wheel we hope you are having a great summer. Suzanne Jefferies. For information from Diane Marshall 01656 656600

The July meeting was very busy as usual, with the GFWI Information and the planning of future outings. The speaker this month was one of our members: Marion Brooke-Morris who spoke very knowledgeably on the process of making ‘Porcelain Dolls’ , of which she is a Master Doll Maker. Marion brought along some examples of her collection, which were quite amazing. She also makes ‘Teddy Bears’ , a very talented Lady. Our Social Link Delegate, Wendy Williams (Sker WI) was in attendance to deliver the report on the Annual NFWI Council Meeting, held this year at Bournemouth, many thanks to her. The Summer Tea on June 19th was a great success. The lovely food was delicious as usual. We were entertained by Shirley, with her hilarious poems, concluding the afternoon with a ‘Sing along’ accompanied by Carol and Tina on their Ukulele’s. The GFWI afternoon tea at Margam Park Orangery, held in June, was a very smart occasion with the Ladies in their posh frocks and hats. The weather let us down but failed to dampen our enjoyment. Business & finance FINANCIAL HEADACHES ON A DIVORCE OR SPLIT

GIVE YOUR OLD PENSIONS A NEW HOME

This month, let’s take a look at an issue that arises when a couple decide to part or divorce and the very awkward financial implications that arise when it comes to splitting the assets, especially the HOUSE. It is not just the younger generation that sees its’ share of divorce these days, as the number of people in the 60-plus bracket continues to increase year on year. It is estimated that the property wealth held by those aged 65-plus is around 1.7 TRILLION pounds, an enormous amount of money, enough to run some small countries. When it comes to splitting the property for anyone but especially the over-60s, it can be a harrowing time for all concerned. However where younger people may have time on their side to start afresh, very often older people feel that it is too late for them and they really don’t know where and how to get advice that could help them resolve the matter, whereby they could remain in their current property or even purchase a new smaller home. Every year we help people like these and at the time of writing this I am dealing with three such cases, all divorces, where we are putting together a package to suit both parties. So, an upheaval in later life does NOT mean it’s too late and we may well be able to help you, depending on a number of factors of course, primarily the figures involved. If you need to know, all you need to do is ask and we’ll be happy to take a look at the situation and to advise you accordingly, taking into account your own feelings on the matter and your anticipated needs going forward. So, if you see yourself in this somewhere, pick up the phone and have a chat initially, either at our office or we’ll come out to your place at NO CHARGE, even during evenings and weekends, where available. The numbers you need are 01656 782545 and 07768 418308 and there will be no obligation whatsoever, as not even we know yet what solutions would best fit for you – but it’s well worth a discussion.

We would be happy to give a prize to anyone who could tell us how many personal pension providers exist in the UK today. It’s not just the ones that are active today as there are far more that are inactive or closed and have been taken over or merged. We’ve all heard of the blockbuster company’s like Prudential, Aviva, Legal & General, Old Mutual that are currently active on the pension scene. But whatever happened to company’s like Pearl Assurance, National Provident, Guardian, Eagle Star, Sun Alliance, Cornhill, Target, Abbey Life, Allied Dunbar, Royal, Canon, Laurentian, Hambro Life, Britannic, National Mutual, Clerical Medical, Co-op, Sentinel, Equitable Life, London Life, Hill Samuel, Scottish Life, Scottish Amicable, Lloyds Life and many more… do you have a pension plan with any of these? The company’s that have closed to new business or merged with others still hold your pension funds and probably in an old fashioned contract which could contain high charges and need close examination. You may be better off moving these policies to a newer style plan or combining with what you have already. The purpose of this is simply to have one source of funds to manage and control before and after retirement. Lots of small pension pots will cost more to administer and certainly be a headache when you eventually retire so having someone review your plans could be quite a valuable exercise. Some traditional plans can carry guarantees so be careful not to move funds without taking advice from a qualified advisor who would have professional indemnity insurance to safeguard the advice given. You might have stopped paying into some of these plans years ago and possibly moved house several times so the company’s in question may not be able to find you to pay you what you are owed. The FCA can help you trace closed companies but it can be hard work. If you would like assistance in tracing pension assets let us know. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

Our competitive Club members are well on the way to gearing themselves up for the annual Show next month. It is around now that the growers are deciding which fruit, vegetables and flowers will be entered for the show. This year is our 49th annual show and the competition will probably be quite exciting. As next year is our 50th anniversary we are thinking of ways to make all of our events just that little bit ‘extra special’ so watch this space! As many of us are about to set off on our main summer holidays it is time to think about preparing our gardens for the great get away. Family or friends are often called upon to undertake watering whilst we are on our travels. It does seem a bit cheeky though to ask them to tackle all the other garden tasks such as weeding and mowing! So try and get on top of it all before you go and then relax as, at this time of year, gardens are pretty good at looking after themselves! Joyce Pegg New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk Or email EnqLGC@gmail.com

August- the last official month of summer and time to order your spring bulbs – how depressing! As the weather heats up you’ll be watering your pots and deadheading daily, but at least the dry weather means less mowing and the weeds wont’ be so rampant, it’s a fair swap! Watering the lawn is such a waste, don’t worry if your lawn is looking brown, the autumn rains will soon sort it out. In the veg plot, keep picking, it’s like deadheading, the more you pick the more you’ll get, try picking a few runner bean flowers too, they are edible, delicious and so colourful on potatoes or in salad. Sow some parsley this month, it’s a slow herb to germinate (don’t give up on it) it won’t be harvested for about 10 weeks but you will be able to pick it all winter, chewing a leaf is a marvellous cure for garlic breath! Talking of herbs did you know a banana plant is actually a herb because it doesn’t have a woody trunk just a large stem and botanically it’s berry, apparently if you’re allergic to bananas you will usually be allergic to latex too – weird. Deadline date for the September issue is Thursday 15th August PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ‘The English winter—ending in July, to recommence in August’ Lord Byron The recent spell of hot and dry weather certainly puts paid to that. Gardens have now recovered from the changeable June with temperatures dropping to single figures at night. The challenge now is watering. A little and often is not the best way for ground plants, these needing a good soaking at the roots every two to three days. Pots and hanging baskets will need water every day. To minimise loss from evaporation it is best to water early morning; if this is not possible then late evening. Only water in full sun in emergencies. Plants may also benefit from a foliar feed with a weak solution of high potash fertiliser. Red spider mite can cause problems in the greenhouse. A good soaking inside using the misting setting on the hose spray gun is an effective, non chemical, control. New potatoes for Christmas should be started early August from treated seed potatoes, successful varieties being Charlotte or Gemson. Our stores will be closed for the month of August allowing our dedicated and hard-working crew to spend more time with their families. Our August trip is to LLwyngarreg Gardens Carmarthenshire Tues 20th. Frank Fulgoni

Health & wellbeing MAGNESIUM If you’re concerned about diabetes, the first thing your doctor might suggest is getting a blood sugar test. This can certainly identify problems if it comes back outside of the normal range, but there’s another test you might also want to consider no matter how you perform on a fasting glucose test: a magnesium check. That’s because many experts believe that magnesium deficiencies are behind the growing rates of diabetes in the world. Nearly half of Americans are low in magnesium, and that figure rises to 80 percent when you just look at those over the age of 70. Diabetes and magnesium deficiency often go hand in hand, so it’s well worth paying attention to magnesium if you’re at risk of diabetes or simply if you’re hoping to avoid it. Magnesium is a mineral that helps to metabolise your insulin and blood glucose, and it plays an important role in more than 300 of your body’s critical functions. For example, it plays a role in protein synthesis, blood pressure, and nerve and muscle function in addition to glucose control. Read more at: www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Arts & music BIPOLARITY EXHIBITION AT THE GATE ART GALLERY

A 25-year-old artist from Porthcawl is hoping her solo exhibition can raise awareness of the misconceptions surrounding bipolar disorder: ‘Bipolarity’ is partway through a five-week run at The Gate Art Gallery in Cardiff. Pointillist artist and medical humanities PhD student Cerys Knighton draws from her experiences of living with bipolar since childhood. Cerys’s artwork also explores her PhD research, funded by the South West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership, which examines how manic-depressive illness became a diagnostic category. Pointillism is a technique in which thousands of individual ink dots are delicately layered to build-up textures and images. ‘Bipolarity’ features 43 pieces of Cerys’s freehand artwork, as well as a video showing the pointillism drawing process. Cerys’s artwork uses her research to reflect on current social attitudes towards bipolarity, and to encourage discussions about the reality of living with this long-term mental illness. Cerys said: ‘By using familiar signifiers from the world around us, and exploring the divide between organic and inorganic, I want my artwork to challenge the viewer’s perspective and provoke discussion about social perceptions of mental ill health, uncovering the different realities lurking beneath statements of “I’m fine”’.

PORTHCAWL WELSH LEARNERS’ CHOIR The choir is now enjoying a break in August but rehearsals will begin again in earnest in September. All the choir members have been shocked at the recent, sad loss of their Musical Director and good friend, Anne Brown. However, we are determined to continue and build on the solid foundation laid by Anne since the choir’s formation in 2016. We are fortunate that one of our members has now agreed to take on the role of Choir Leader. We look forward to working with Jan Kletta and our accompanist, Christine Goldsworthy, and to expanding our repertoire in the future. We would like to thank Gilgal Baptist Church for their continued support and are grateful for their permission to use the Church Hall for our rehearsals. Would you like to sing with us? Hoffi canu? KENFIG HILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR

As we break for summer, we reflect on what has been a busy and incredible year for the choir with an unprecedented number of concerts and events attended and performed at. The autumn international at the Millennium Stadium, Selby and Margam Abbeys, twice at the Grand Pavilion, Pisgah Chapel with the Dublin Male Choir were just some of the highlights along with our usual annual concerts, weddings and fundraising concerts for a number of local charities where we have raised somewhere in the region of £10,000 in total. We look forward to another exciting year where we will be singing at new venues and have been invited to sing at the Royal Albert Hall for the London Welsh Festival of Male Voice Choirs where a piece specially written for us for our 50th anniversary year in 2021 by their Musical Director, called Kenfig, will be performed We welcome anyone interested in singing to come and join us. We rehearse on Mondays & Thursdays 7-9pm at The Greenacres Motel, North Cornelly. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK All roads lead to the Newton Festival this month (Bank Holiday Saturday August 24th starting at 11.00am) with 11 acts. Check website for running order. The following day (Sunday August 25th), the Seagull pub, Rest Bay, holds its “Family Day” with BBQ, bouncy castle, kids’ entertainer and live music with the Cover Sluts featuring the brilliant singer Abi P. on at around 7.00pm. I must mention that the pub’s quizmaster, Dennis Johnson, who started the Friday night quiz in 1996, is retiring, but the quiz has raised a staggering £88,548.96 for various charities. I wish Dennis – a top guy – a happy retirement! I will be attending both events, so say hi and grab a selfie! I missed the Ocean Fest, but heard that Lepton Shoddy were good with their singer sporting a megaphone. Great to see the Picton doing well since Amanda Lloyd has taken over the reins. Her themed music shows are popular and of course the famous jam nights on Tuesday evenings are worth a visit. I will pop down soon when my passport arrives! A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW It is no longer a closelyguarded secret that I am working on a new documentary film which will tell the story of the Llandow Air Disaster, a catastrophic crash involving an Avro Tudor 5 airliner which came down at Sigingstone in March 1950 with the loss of 80 lives. I have not publicised the fact before now because the research for it is very complex and it seemed better not to say too much about it, but enough people now know that it is about to go into production so there appears to be little point in maintaining silence any longer. Apart from the undoubted difficulty of researching something that happened nearly seventy years ago, there is also the slight problem of showing the world what the Tudor 5 aircraft looked like, so I am building a 1/16th scale model of it for the film, and that is turning into a marathon effort in its own right! This is a gentle reminder that films do not make themselves, they require a great deal of commitment and hard work – and even then the outcome is not guaranteed. But I will give progress reports in the coming months. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

On the 21st June, the choir performed with Cor Seranata at a charity concert in aid of Brugada Syndrome. Highlight of the evening was the appearance of Ellie Rose Harris, a beautiful little girl, who suffers from this rare condition. Both choirs were on top form performing a varied range of music. This was an exceptionally successful evening and a total of £2,108 was raised for this worthy cause. Check out our YouTube channel to see some numbers (the one with the logo). We also sang at Newton Church Fayre with our rendition of African Trilogy going down a storm. Check it out also on our YouTube channel. It’s our annual concert on September 14th This year we have very special celebrity guests ‘Ida’. Four stunning sopranos bringing you a sleek and breathtaking set of operatic arias and chart-topping covers. Tickets are now on sale and details are shown on the poster. Don’t miss out on this great evening. There is always a warm welcome for anyone interested in being part of the choir at Arlington Road Church at 7.30 on a Tuesday and Friday.

MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR It has been a busy few months for the choir with concerts and events to help publicise the choir. One highlight was singing in the Indoor Market Bridgend to support Wartime Bridgend. To celebrate the choir’s 40th Anniversary a special Anniversary Concert was held at Pencoed Comprehensive School on 5/7/19 where the choir was supported by Bridgend Male Voice Choir and Llantwit Major based Harpist Heledd Lynne. It was an opportunity for the choir to sing some of the new songs from its repertoire including a medley of Abba songs and the Adele song When We Were Young. The arrangement, which is proving the most popular, is The Andrew Lloyd Webber Medley. We were lucky to have had so many sponsors this year so a big thanks to them (see website). In addition we have had some new patrons Mel and Ron Watkins, The Village Florist, S and T Tyres and Councillors Jon and Judith Butcher thank you. If you enjoy singing and were thinking of joining a choir then come along to one of our practices on a Thursday evening at 19:15 in Pencoed Bowls Club and see what you think, warm welcome guaranteed.

YOUNG DANCERS WANTED FOR PAVILION PANTO The Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl will once again be holding open auditions for young dancers to be part of their Junior Ensemble in their magical family pantomime Snow White. The auditions are open to boys and girls aged 9-16 in school years 4-11 at the time of the production. Steve Boden, Managing Director of Imagine Theatre who are producing the pantomime, says “We will be looking for 2 teams of children to take part in the show, and as well as dancing ability we look for children who have that special something extra that makes them stand out from the crowd.” “We like to hold open auditions as it gives any child of the right age who wishes to take part a chance, regardless if they attend a dance school or have any previous experience, this audition is open to everybody and it’s a great opportunity for children from the local community to get involved and appear at this amazing theatre.” “Performing in a professional production is a fabulous and rewarding opportunity for the children and is always a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of hard work.” Full details on the auditions, including further information on age and attendance requirements and regulations, as well as the application forms can be found on The Grand Pavilion’s website or www.imaginetheatre.co.uk. Application forms do not need to be submitted in advance although where possible please complete them beforehand and bring with you to save time on audition day. Sport reports TENNIS AT GRIFFIN PARK

We run tennis sessions every Saturday at Griffin Park, Porthcawl for juniors and adults of all ages and abilities. The junior session is 10-11am for children 5-16 years of age, it’s £3 per player and the adult session is 11-12pm, £5 per player. Everyone is welcome to just turn up and join in, we have spare rackets and our coaches are fully qualified LTA& RPT Tennis coaches. Tennis is a great way to socialise, keep fit and good for team building and making friends. We are hoping in the future to have a tennis team and run tournaments, the reception of our tennis sessions has been fantastic so far, and we are hoping this will carry on, as I’m sure in time we can have a tennis club here. I’d like to thank Phil Beaman & Independent Councillor Brian Jones for helping us bring tennis to the community of porthcawl, as I feel Park tennis is where it all begins. Everyone is welcome to come along; as I feel exciting times are ahead at Porthcawl! My aim is to make tennis accessible and fun for all. For any enquires we have a Facebook page called Porthcawl Tennis lessons or mobile 07487 820612. Jonathan Sedgmore

CHAMPIONSHIPS AND LEAGUES The surf lifesaving beach season is now well underway and Pen y Bont members are excelling across all disciplines and age groups. Pen y Bont A and B teams in the Friday night Mini League series are dominating in both the Open and Youth/Masters categories; with the final league competition in August overall medals are within reach! Youth, open and masters members have also been busy with the Club Championships, which are friendly, club-only races where everyone can have a go regardless of ability. Several of our junior members also enjoyed the annual Junior Camp in St David’s this month. Club members Ashley Lewis, Lloyd Rosewell, Meriel Clode and Amelie Clode competed in the Legacy Ironman event in Portreath this month too. The event was a grueling triple ironman, but our members competed excellently, coming 3rd, 4th, 2nd and 5th respectively, in the men and women’s categories. Pen y Bont’s nipper section has also done the club proud by coming 4th in the Welsh National Nipper Championships in Aberavon. The nippers all showed skill, determination and a great attitude towards racing and supporting each other, which is promising for the club’s future stars! Meriel Clode

KPC YOUTH & COMMUNITY CHARITY GOLF DAY The sun shone for KPC Youth & Community’s Annual Charity Golf Day at the Grove Golf Club on Fri 21st June, with 16 teams entering. It was great to welcome back teams who’ve supported the charity over many years, as well as some new teams for 2019. Results from the day were: 1st Prize – W.E.D.G.E.S, 2nd Prize – Sker Masonic and 3rd Prize – Weldec Team 2. Longest Drive was won by Neil Morgan of Weldec, with Nearest the Pin – Phil Thomas of Solar Sunshades. The total number of Lost Balls was: 130 with closest guess at 131 by Viv Thomas of Sker Masonic with 131. KPC would like to thank all teams who gave up their Friday to support them. Also thanks also to everyone who donated to their raffle/auction prizes and NE Roofing for sponsoring a hole - greatly appreciated, and also the staff of The Grove Golf Club, Nr Porthcawl!

RUNNERS SIZZLE IN THE SUN

What a month it has been for the Porthcawl Runners. There have been memorable victories. Hannah Jenkins bagged first female for the club at the Llanilid Loop event in the Bridgend County Running League (BCRL) with third female Gabriella Booth also on the podium. The club also had a one-two in the male 50+ category at the Porthcawl 10k with Jeff Thomas coming in ahead of Mike Furness. There have been milestones. Congratulations to Deb Roberts (200), Wilfy Edwards (200), Gareth Mole (150), Mark James (100), Dennie Mainwaring (50) and Lauren Gillingham (50) on their parkrun milestones. Meanwhile the inaugural Porthcawl 10k saw the club smash its own race participation number for the third year running. The new-record 91 eclipses the previous best 63 at the home BCRL fixture at Bryngarw Park last year. There have been PBs. Congratulations also to Julian Jones, Chad Griffiths, Megan Amelia, Mike Davies, Leanne Powis, Janet Davies and Molly Graham for their PBs at the Swansea half marathon. The Runners also enjoyed their annual parkrun outing to Barry Island while new additions to the coaching team include Alwyn Thomas, Susan Thomas and Stephane Ollivier, who have all recently completed their level one coaching course.
