EMYR’S KARAVAN4THEKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE

Dear Editor, On June 21st this year myself, my brother Mike Furness, Siobhan Fitzgerald-Grice, Nia Williams, Christine Pollard, Natalie Mullen and Geraint Carpenter took on our own person 3 Peaks Challange. Our driver Byron Davies got us to the base of Ben Nevis the night before and at 613 we hiked up Ben Nevis in unexpected conditions of -7 degrees and 40mph gusts. After returning within 5 hrs and with the help our amazing back up Sarah Nicholas we travelled 6.5 hours to the Scafell Pike knowing we only had 4 hours to complete the climb in boiling hot conditions which were freezing on the very jagged and difficult to reach summit. Unfortunately two of the team was injured and we were down to 5. By the time we got to Snowdonia it was 2.30 am and moral was low with lots of aches and pains and lack of sleep. But up we went in the dark to reach the summit in the cold dank conditions as dawn broke. Although we were tired cold and in pain we pushed through as fast as we could to descend by 545 am 23hrs and 43mins after the start of Ben Nevis! We were all exhausted and elated that we had achieved our goal within 24 hrs! Online pledges and sponsorships have now reach £3202 (and still coming) in memory of Carol Anne Furness who passes away aged 48. She is very much missed by her family and friends and Macmillan were very supportive during their time of need. Thank you for all the fantastic support and generous donations. Please continue to give to this amazing charity. Nikki Furness-Jones, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, GET £40,000 Amazingly, we have now TAR raised over £40,000 - thank you so, so, so much to you kind people who have raised or donated recently - fantastic effort and very generous of you all. We had set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although the staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children to take their minds off their on going treatments. We are continuing to try and raise money to provide more for the children being treated and on Saturday 18th August we have again organised The Big Push. A Valleys to Coast walk from Glynneath to Porthcawl. The walk is split into 2 stages with the option of doing it all or as much as you want - in fact, a few groups joined us on the coastal path for the final few miles and a good number of our local RNLI crew decided to take in a few of the local taverns along the way, whilst raising lots of money for us. For more information and to register find the Big Push on Facebook or on our website below. Next month we will see the launch of our fantastic new project! For more information please visit our website: http://www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07900 493697 We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you. Christian Evans

BOOK OF THE MONTH Peace Comes to Honeyfield by Anna Jacobs Armistice Day, London, 1918. Fiercely independent Georgie is tired of being told what’s best for her by men. When she defies her father’s wishes by going out into the peace festivities, she tries to help a woman being attacked and encounters Patrick, a gallant wounded ex-soldier looking for a new calling now that the fighting is done. But the war isn’t over for everybody. Enemy forces have infiltrated the intelligence bureau and sent her father into hiding. And they are coming for her too. Georgie knows there’s only one place where she’ll be safe: Honeyfield. But there are traitors in the bureau and she doesn’t know who she can trust. With Patrick in charge of her security detail, can she get to Honeyfield before her father’s enemies find her? And will she be reunited with her father, the only family she has left? 14 | seaside news

The museum recently benefited from a generous donation of first £1000 from the Kenfig Archaeology Trust. The trust was set up five years ago when a group of like minded people came together following a successful archaeological dig in Kenfig. The group have decided to hang up their trowels but will still continue meeting on a regular basis discussing their passion for all things archaeological, Following the rules of their constitution the trust fund was would up and a charity chosen to receive the remaning balance of the trust and it was felt that Porthcawl Museum was a worthy cause to support. A group of the members and trustees visited the museum and presented the cheque to Paul Joseph the museums chairman. They were then given a tour of the museum by Paul and other museum volunteers. David Swidenbank

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM & THE VIKINGS Pupils of Brackla Primary School, Bridgend became museum curators last week, after being given space at Porthcawl museum to display their Viking project work. Groups of children moved the work from the school where it has been on display and with the help of some of the museum volunteers rearranged the project around one of the recently renovated rooms at the museum. The display was open to the public on Saturday the 14th many of the pupils proudly showed the work to their parents and family, the display was timely as it coincided with a visit to the museum of members of Gwerin Y Gŵyr the Swansea Branch of the National Viking reenactment society Regia Anglorum. The Vikings set up camp in the museum grounds and spent the day demonstrating daily Viking life including their fighting skills to the the pupils and other visitors . Museum volunteer Elaine Newman who planned the visit with the school commented that “ The museum team enjoyed working with the pupils and teachers so much that we all look forward to assisting them with future projects” At the end of a successful day the museum chairman Paul Joseph was delighted to receive the gift of a hand made replica Viking helmet from Myles Stevens and his fellow members of Gwerin Y Gŵyr. 20 | seaside news

THE WATERS OF NEWTON

There is a prophecy, depicting the end of Newton. This vision came from ‘St John’s Well’, once named ‘Sandford’s Well’ after a Norman knight. It’s said to have magical properties, both curative and spiritual. People believed the well was magical because, when the tide was in, it would empty, and fill when the tide was out; contrary to normal understanding. The prophet came to the well and was struck with images of Newton’s port. The sea was always fickle to us. It was not too kind to the ships that sliced through its tides, often breaking them against Tusker and the black rocks. However, the prophecy promised a more violent attack on Newtonians. The sea would invade our land, drowning the sand dunes, St John’s Church, and even the magic well. It would go so far, that ships would be moored near Clevis Hill. Once, a very high tide, actually, sent water all the way down Beach Road, lapping at the gates of the church. The village-folk thought the prophecy was nigh, but, to this day, we have been spared its final outcome. Yet, as the Earth warms, and the sealevels rise, this ancient prophecy may be proven right after all. Joseph Audsley

School reports MYNYDD CYNFFIG PRIMARY SCHOOL

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

Our pupils continue to achieve success in their learning, most notably when our Year 5 team ‘Turbo Titans’ reached the UK Finals of the Jaguar Primary Schools 3D Challenge at the British Motor Museum near Coventry. Their Formula 1 car design was the eighth fastest of the 36 teams which qualified. Our pupils have performed well in rugby, football, netball, swimming, basketball, cricket and rounders whilst our Year 4 and 5 team won the “Six Sports” tournament organised by Bridgend College. Our School Choir took part in a charity concert to raise money for Prostate Cymru as well as being invited to sing alongside visitors from Villeneuve d’Ornan in Aquitaine near Bordeaux, France by the Bridgend Town Twinning Association. We actively participated in Bridgend’s Festival of Learning, welcoming twenty teachers from across the Borough to a presentation about our role as a Curriculum Pioneer School and how our work through Expressive Arts has impacted positively on pupil standards and well-being. Whilst our Year 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic residential trip to Morfa Bay Adventures in Pendine, learners from Nursery upwards have gained many experiences including visits to Greenmeadow Farm, Porthcawl Lifeboat Station, Margam Discovery Centre, Techniquest and the New Theatre in Cardiff. Neil Davies Head teacher

Shocking news! A murder in PCS, and it seems that the culprit is a teacher! Luckily our Year 7 pupils, supported by PC Williams and the English and Science Departments have been able to solve it! Pupils have worked on their CSI project this term, culminating in presenting their theories on who they believed the killer was. Mr Davies was uncovered as the killer, living under the pseudo name “Bill Royale”. The winners were Samuel Weaver, Michael Howell and Rhys Cryer - well done to all our Year 7 pupils! Incredibly, the next Lord Sugar can be found in PCS’ Year 8! Pupils have been busy planning a new product and developing a marketing strategy to sell it. The presentations were phenomenal and the next apprentice is Alina Biju. The curtain has just come down on another very successful Young Playwrights’ Festival. Pupils are encouraged to write, produce, direct and perform in plays, which they then showcase to parents over 2 nights in the Jubilee Theatre. Year 12s recently had a lot of fun team building with the Royal Marines, and will finish the term with a beach clean, Olympics, work experience and the traditional charity ‘Lavender Walk’. Congratulations to Mr Pucella who completed the Ty Hafan Dads’ #5in55 Challenge raising over £20,000. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

NEWS FROM THE BRIDGE Summer is here! And this term has been filled with mixed emotions. Our year 11’s leaving, we’re upset and emotional to say goodbye. On the other hand, we are happy to know that they’re going on to achieve their goals and aspirations. We held our Leaver’s Ceremony on June 28th, where the year 11 pupils received their Record of Achievements and other certificates. Thank you Mr. Slade from Porthcawl Comprehensive and families for joining our celebration. Our year 10 pupils recently visited Coney Beach to support the ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ campaign. They collected two bags of litter, and finished the morning with a beach BBQ! It was perfect weather for paddling. In our small vegetable garden we are beginning to harvest tomatoes, blackcurrants, strawberries, courgettes and beans. Inside the classroom, we have grown cucumbers up to 30cm long and have some green peppers waiting to ripen. Talking about the garden, KS2 put together two large planters ready for flowers and vegetables to be sown. We also invested in two large parasols and new tables for KS2 to sit during break and lunchtime. We hope everyone has an amazing summer holiday and return to school ready to learn. Georgia and Ella

CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL The final term is a busy and exciting time and this year was no exception. The School Council met Education Director Lindsay Harvey to discuss various issues and to hear about his life and two members participated in the Festival of Learning pupil voice forum. Children have learned about online safety and cyber bullying. American teachers, with links to local churches, came in and did fun activities and Year 6 enjoyed visiting their comprehensive schools. Our sports days, although hot, were fun too and our football and netball teams did well at the Litchard Tournament. Techniquest came and brought ‘Maths on the Menu’ for our junior children and the Foundation Phase had ‘a blast’ when they went there on a visit. Other visits included, Year 5 to Bryngarw to pond dip and build dens and river studies with Year 3 at Kenfig and Year 6 at Brecon. The cutting of the ribbon by Cllr Jeff Tildsley to officially open our STEM Allotment Garden was a proud moment and the culmination of all the hard work that has gone into making this a special place. The experiences the children have gained in nurturing their plants to fruition have been joyous and invaluable. A Parent Council Disco and our traditionally moving Year 6 Leaver’s Evening rounded off the year in style. Sue Jones

ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

The end of the summer term at St Clare’s in Porthcawl was jam packed as always with activities, sporting events and trips which included Treetops Adventure Golf, Cardiff Castle, Oakwood Theme Park and Heatherton World of Activities. Nursery, Infants and Juniors have all been learning Spanish and they are excited to learn more words as the lessons will continue in the autumn. As we go to print, we are eagerly awaiting this year’s A-level and GCSE results, and will have more good news to share in the next edition. In the meantime, work has already begun on our brand new dedicated Sixth Form Centre ready for September. We look forward to welcoming more new faces into school on the first day of term with boys and girls from 3 in our Nursery right up to 18 in our excellent Sixth Form. To find out what makes St Clare’s School so special and what we can offer your son or daughter, please contact Holly Fowlkes, our Admissions Registrar, on (01656) 789966 or visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk Helen Hier, Head Teacher Picture caption: St Clare’s School

ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

The Brynteg Music department’s annual Brynteg Proms took place on 3rd July. It was a wonderful evening and the musical talent on display was awe-inspiring. The Bridgend Louisiana Partnership from West Monroe Baptist Church, Louisiana USA recently visited Brynteg School. Now celebrating its10th year pupils were treated to a jam packed itinerary such as attending a concert, lessons on gospel music, Louisiana and American culture and traditions to name a few. A group of pupils also accompanied the band on stage during separate concerts in the Bridgend Life Centre and the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl. On 10th July year 8 were involved in an Expressive Arts taster workshop morning with staff and artistes from the professional Expressive Arts world. Together we worked on a project entitled “The Variety Project” where pupils enjoyed many activities in Art, Dance, Music and Drama. What a great opportunity and fun for our pupils! We have had an amazing academic year and we would like to thank all parents and carers for their continual support. Brynteg School will reopen to all pupils on Tuesday 4th September. J L Davies Marketing & Communications 24 | seaside news

The Summer Term proved to be exciting, as students took part in Bridgend’s inaugural Festival of Learning. The Learners’ day was compared by our pupils and opened by the arch-cellists. Staff presented on Visible Learning and the Lead Creative Schools programme. Term ended with Key Stage Three Science, PE and Language festivals, including clog dancing, Welsh Cake Making, a Cardiff Bay treasure hunt and triple literacy lessons. DofE pupils had numerous expeditions. The whole school has been active with sports days and house competitions. Trips included Geography field trips, a theatre trip to Stratford, Technocamp and a further visit to Wellington College to strengthen partnership working. This year, more pupils than ever before will attend study days or weeks in prestigious universities. Charity work remains vibrant. Fundraising has taken place for Noah’s Ark, the Barnardo’s Big Toddle, Heronsbridge School, Bridgend Samaritans and Oshi World. The First Give workshops focused on fundraising and raising awareness for various charities whilst pupils harnessed presentations skills and social action ideas. Sixth Formers also ran the Y Bont afternoon tea. In the last three weeks over £3000 has been raised. We wish all of our staff and students a happy and healthy summer break.

PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL The Summer Term has been a busy yet positive one at Pil Primary School. The school hosted an “Art Gallery” event led by Year 6 pupils with exhibitions of wonderful artwork from all classes across the school. Parents attended the event to browse and purchase the mounted and framed pieces. The pupils, staff and whole school community of Pil Primary have continued to be committed to promoting the UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child throughout the year. We were all delighted to receive the Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award in May, following the assessment morning with Sarah Hook. Our school is now looking forward to working towards the gold award in the next academic year. Good luck and best wishes to Year 6, as they leave us to begin the next chapter in their learning. Also, we say goodbye to Mrs Victoria Jones and Miss Paula Rowlands, we wish them well for the future and thank them for their contribution to the school. Yours sincerely N Pryce Head Teacher

NEGATIVE FEELINGS

I run as fast as I can, My heart pumping, Fifty metres to go. I step on the pedal. I look ahead, Three people, I go faster, I go past one. Desperation sets in, I need to go quicker, I glide past another, Across the line in second place. Daniel R. Whittaker (Aged 11yrs) Porthcawl

How gladly we welcomed you, Our bundle of happiness Abounding with joy, you bounced into our lives Till, sensing my loss And seeking to comfort It was you helped me now survive You greeted the children, your toys at the ready Calling lest they pass us on by Dear Maisie, my comfort My constant companion With what sorrow we now bid you goodbye Too soon you have left me, Yet I still hear you calling Come, life is for living Do not be dismayed God’s still in his heaven who gave us such friendship Rise with joy; greet each day he has made. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Don’t be angry anymore, When you feel desperate, Don’t get mad with anyone, Don’t ever feel irate.

WARTIME Shoulders back, head up! While the others took the boot Young and old laid a carpet Crimson and soft Their minds aloft. Trudged and glared Valkyries, may it not be a soul to waste As the enemy moves in haste. White steeds to part thou ways Adrift from the golden bay So shall I salute. Lara Fuller, Pontycymmer

Email us your poem info@seaside news.co.uk LOSS THROUGHOUT LIFE Throughout life we will ultimately, Loose a special person in our lives, But it hits us much harder, When it’s your partners, husbands or wives. The intense heartache and pain, Can really hit you so deep, You can start to feel depressed, And loose many hours of sleep. The reason you’re hurting, Is because you loved them so much. Plus you now have that void left, By that person you can no longer touch. Written by David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend 26 | seaside news

NURSERY RUMOUR Hey diddle diddle The cat and the fiddle The cow gazed up in despair She looked at the moon And said with a swoon, “You’ll never get me up there.” Bob Davies North Cornelly

MY PATH WILL FOLLOW HIM My path will follow Jesus It is He who lights my way I will seek Him in the morning It’s to Him I go to pray He fills my heart with blessings His presence draws my praise There is no one like my Saviour Him I’ll follow all my days I had never known such goodness Until He revealed Himself to me His love, mercy, kindness healed my heart and set me free That’s why I’ll always follow Jesus There is none compared to He The God of true salvation who brings life and liberty. Neil Matthews Porthcawl

You bottle up your negative feelings, You don’t speak out, But instead you go crazy, With screams and shouts. You are concerned about yourself, You don’t think anybody cares, But they are unaware of you’re problems, Your health issues and scares. There is always a ear to listen, A shoulder to cry on each day, To give you that little bit of comfort, Or to sit down with you and pray. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

JUST LOOK UP… Within the eye of one man The value of his brother Is no more Word and action mean nothing When valued to the coin Hard do we work With no joy or no relief The day ends with no satisfaction And no dream; Long restless nights With many of men turning in their sleep And many of lady with unanswered questions; Long is the silence Long is the dark Alone with thought But no wisdom gained However no matter how dark The night can be Once in awhile there is a blight light shining To guide us to the next dawn All we have to do is Look up and wish upon a star But what people forget is... The Sun is our Star So just up because there will always Be bright days to come Steven T. Richards Bridgend

I took part recently in a televised street surgery in Bridgend when local people were able to ask questions about key issues. One constituent asked about how Bridgend County Borough would fare as it stands at the periphery of two city deal areas – Cardiff and Swansea. The danger is that it will be marginal to both. Bridgend comes under the Cardiff deal but little is being done to ensure that transport links to Cardiff are improved under the Cardiff Metro plan. Porthcawl seems to be the most marginalised part of the borough with just vague promises made about improving bus services. This is not good enough. I will be pressing for consideration to be given to creating either a light railway or tramway to Porthcawl from the railway station at Pyle. This would give Porthcawl residents a direct link with the South Wales mainline connecting them to both Swansea and Cardiff. New light railways and modern tramways are being installed in other parts of the country so it is not asking too much for the town, which is also an important holiday resort, to have proper public transport links for the future. Local news PORTHCAWL RNLI CREWS HEADING TOWARDS THE BUSIEST YEAR EVER

YOUNG AT HEART COMMUNITY GROUP Last month, I was very pleased to visit Young at Heart community group. Young at Heart is an over 50’s community group and was set up just over a year ago. Most members are in their 60’s, although there are a few members in their 50’s. There are about 35 people in the group. Over the past year, the group has invited representatives from Age Cymru, the Royal British Legion, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and other key organisations to address them. The group also has a strong social element with many activities arranged such as creative writing, poetry, painting, days out and Tai Chi classes. During my visit, I talked about my role as the local Assembly Member, my role as First Minister and about the work of the National Assembly for Wales. I then invited questions from the group. These ranged from local issues such as recycling, anti-social behaviour, Bridgend town centre and local health issues through to questions about the Assembly on powers and responsibilities, representation of women at the Assembly and funding of the Assembly. It was a lively session with no shortage of views expressed. CARWYN JONES AM AM for Bridgend

MORE INTERNATIONAL VISITORS TO WALES Volunteer lifeboat crews have been paged over eighty times already this year. This is well ahead of any previous years in the stations history. Lifeboat Operations Manager, Philip Missen, commented, ‘The number of ‘shouts’ we have launched for so far this year is unprecedented. The hot weather has added to some incidents but not totally. The reasons for each launch has also varied greatly, some have been straight forward rescues and others have seen us work with many of the emergency services including Welsh Ambulance Service Paramedics, Coastguard Units from Porthcawl and Llantwit Major, The Coastguard SAR Helicopter and Police. Some have been instigated by observations made by the RNLI lifeguards operating along our coast and by the National Coastwatch Institution team at Porthcawl. Again we encourage the public to visit our website, www.porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk for important information i.e. tide times of high and low water and tide heights. It is encouraging to note that many of the open water swimmers at Porthcawl are now towing floats which we would always encourage as a ‘be seen’ safety aid. Finally enjoy the sea but always treat it with respect. Ian Stroud Photos: Steve Jones, Porthcawl

The Welsh Government needs to do more to attract international visitors to Wales as part of its tourism strategy. The Wales Tourism Performance Report shows that whilst the number of international visitor trips to Wales between January and September 2017 rose by 6.1% on the previous year, Scotland managed a 14.3% increase. Similarly, despite London and Scotland experiencing strong increases in the level of international tourism spend over the same period, Wales dropped by 8.4%. The Report shows us that last year, all nations within the UK experienced increases in the volume of international trips, but Scotland and London performed particularly strongly, and whilst the number of trips to Wales increased, spend in Wales during the same period decreased by 8%, in contrast to spend growth across rest of the UK by some 11%. It is clear that the Welsh Government has more to do in terms of attracting international visitors to Wales, and increasing average spend, when compared to other nations of the UK. We are blessed with beautiful towns, villages, and beaches in this part of Wales. Our local economy benefits hugely from tourism. We need the Welsh Government to deliver and make sure we hit our potential. KEEPING VISITORS TO THE BEACH SAFEÂ

NO EXCUSES FOR BEING BORED THIS SUMMER!Â

Seeing that RNLI lifeguards are on duty is always a reassuring sight for anyone who visits the coast, so I am delighted that they will be patrolling four of our most popular Porthcawl beaches for the next three summers. Coney Beach, Rest Bay, Trecco Bay and Pink Bay will all be manned by the RNLI’s seasonal beach lifeguarding service until 2021. It’s part of a deal that has been struck between the RNLI, Bridgend County Borough Council, Porthcawl Town Council and Parkdean Resorts. As Bridgend County Borough Council has been teaming up with the RNLI since the summer of 2016, we are really pleased that the arrangement and partnership is going to continue – after all, the presence of professional lifeguards is an important factor in ensuring that Porthcawl remains a top tourist destination. Rest Bay, Coney Beach and Trecco Bay are being patrolled daily between 10am and 6pm until the end of the season on 2 September, and lifeguards will provide weekend cover at Pink Bay. If you are heading to one of Porthcawl’s beaches during the school holidays, remember to swim only between the red and yellow flags, and to take heed of any safety warnings that lifeguards may issue

As this year’s School’s Out programme enters its second month, the initiative is proving yet again that there’s no excuse for any child to say they are bored or haven’t got anything to do this summer. Featuring a wide range of free activities all designed to keep children fit, healthy and occupied during the holidays, the School’s Out programme offers a huge choice of entertainment for local youngsters. This ranges from the sports-based outdoor games of the Park Lives initiative to Active 4 Life sessions at community venues, free swimming sessions, arts and crafts, hula-hoop lessons and lots more. The Summer Reading Challenge is also part of the programme, and events featuring popular characters from The Beano have seen children taking part in ‘mischief trails’ and more. With Welsh language opportunities included as part of the programme, School’s Out has been organised by Bridgend County Borough Council in partnership with Awen Cultural Trust, Halo Leisure, Menter Bro Ogwr and town and community councils across the county borough. You can view the full School’s Out programme of activities at the council website or by visiting www.bridgend.gov.uk/ schoolsout, and find out more about the Summer Reading Challenge 2018 by contacting Bridgend Library on 01656 754830.Â

FRESH NEW LOOK FOR PYLE LIBRARY Thanks to funding from Welsh Government and Awen Cultural Trust, Pyle Library is set to receive a ÂŁ100,000 makeover this autumn. The money will be used to redevelop the popular library, improve its accessibility and create a facility that can be used by the whole community. More space will be created by moving the reception desk and air-conditioning columns, and fresh flooring, shelving and furniture will be introduced. New features such as ‘reading nooks’ will be created, work stations will benefit from additional power points and free Wi-Fi and charging facilities will be made available to support students, small businesses and home-workers. Working in partnership with Awen Cultural Trust is a perfect example of how the council is finding new ways of providing services. It has helped us avoid many of the funding difficulties that other councils have faced with their library and cultural services, and has enabled us to achieve our ambitions of encouraging a passion for reading and knowledge, particularly among younger generations, while keeping culture and learning at the heart of our communities. Pyle Library also plays an important role in providing local people with helpful advice, support with digital and literacy skills, and access to employment resources, so this is excellent news. 19TH

Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT CEREMONY AT YSGOL BRYN CASTELL

Gus is a delightful three-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross. He can come across as a little shy when he first meets you, but with some tasty treats he soon becomes your best friend. Gus does require some further training in regards to recall and continued socialising with other dogs. He is looking for an active home with people who are used to the breed. He can live with children 11 years old and above. Gus is a really sweet boy, and once settled in his new home his character will shine through. If you would like to know more about Gus, then please contact Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219; or pop down to the centre at Court Colman CF31 4NG. You can also visit the website at www dogstrust.org.uk.

From left to right - Head Teacher Helen Ridout, J.J. Williams MBE, Ellis Watkins (student) Mayor of Bridgend County Borough Cllr. John McCarthy and his consort Mrs. Judy McCarthy, Kyle Holdway /Callum Lewis (students) and Mrs. M. Moon M.P. Mrs. Helen Ridout welcomed everyone to this special annual event held at Ysgol Bryn Castelly, Bryncethin Campus and Guest Speaker, J.J. Williams M.B.E. gave an interesting ‘down to earth’ account of where he began his life and the progress he made through working hard to achieve his ’Goal’. The 26 leavers were congratulated on their progress and Records of Achievement were presented with humour and genuine sadness on seeing them stepping out into various positions they had worked towards with so much encouragement from totally dedicated teachers. Special Awards were presented to Ellis Watkins/Kyle Holdway – Most Improved Pupils of the Year and Learner of the Year Award – Callum Lewis. Liam Andrews was unable to attend the ceremony but achieved Sportsperson of the Year Award, which was accepted by a member of staff on his behalf. All the students were wished Good Luck for the future and all enjoyed a super buffet. Carol Thomas 01656 657846

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES What are we to make of the bible’s prophecies? It’s a difficult thing to predict next week’s weather. My prediction that Germany would win the World Cup was completely wrong. No one really thought we would vote for Brexit! So how amazing that in bible we find predictions with great accuracy about the life of Jesus Christ. Here are just a few examples, (with references): virgin birth (Gen.3: 15, Is.7: 14), Jewish (Num.24: 17) Tribe of Judah, line of King David (Jer.23: 5) born at Bethlehem (Micah 5:2) powered by the Holy Spirit (Is.61: 1-2) preceded by John the Baptist (Isaiah 40:3) lived in Galilee (Is.9: 1) entered Jerusalem on a donkey (Zech.9: 9) dying on the cross (Ps.22, Is.53) rising from the dead (Ps.16: 10). And there are many more! It is impossible to read Isaiah 53 without seeing how accurately this predicts the suffering of Jesus on the cross. Isaiah wrote 700 years before Jesus was born. Archaeologists found copies from 150 years before his birth among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It is the accuracy of these prophecies that encourages Christians today to trust in the Bible, and that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ/Messiah. For more information contact me. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

THE FIRST GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY On the night of 15th May 1855, three boxes of gold, valued at over one million pounds in today’s money, were placed aboard the guard’s van at London Bridge Station. However, when the boxes arrived in Paris, railway officials discovered that lead shot had replaced the gold. Who had carried out this audacious robbery? Investigator Mr Rees was put on the case. The trail led to Pentonville prison where Edward Agar, a professional criminal, was awaiting transportation to Australia for passing false cheques. In fact, a fellow thief had set him up because of his affair with the thief’s mistress. Bitter about the set up, Agar confessed to the robbery, implicating his former mates and revealing that there was no honour amongst this gang of thieves. Until Agar’s confession, the authorities had been clueless, the French blaming the English and the English blaming the French in comical fashion. However, love and lust are no laughing matter, as Agar later discovered when he succumbed to the charms of his erstwhile mistress. In 1979, a film starring Sean Connery presented a highly fictionalised version of events where the master criminal escaped. High on the list of priorities are the epicurean delights of French cuisine, wines to make the oenophile salivate, the mellifluous strains of French music, enriching cultural experiences and badminton. To find out more about what your local Town Twinning association is up to, expected and not so expected; please phone Anne on 01656 788027. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 648 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during the month of June. We dealt with 5 logged incidents involving swimmers, paddle boarders and kayakers. We monitored 19 others. We logged and monitored 178 commercial vessels, 1019 leisure vessels and 52 others. This was a record month for vessel movements with more recorded in one month than that recorded in the period from January to April. Indeed these were the highest figures recorded in any month for us. Five of our trainees completed their intense training this month and attained qualified watchkeeper status. Well done to Rod Daniels, Jonathan Stephen, Julian Galloway, Judith Daniels and Phil Rowe. A new weather station was installed this month that will give us instant and more accurate weather data and the new banners have finally arrived. At the end of June we held a successful joint exercise with Porthcawl RNLI, Porthcawl Coastguard, Port Talbot RNLI and Milford Haven Coastguard. Various scenarios were acted out and our spotting and plotting skills were put to the test. These exercises are important to enable us to practice our skills as well as promoting good relationships with our Search and Rescue partners. Many thanks to all the participants. Nick Weedon, Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Have you ever noticed how often real truth is only spoken in angry outbursts? It seems we frequently have to be brought to boiling point before we are able to sacrifice social niceties and be more honest. It is then that the truth we speak with anger often hurts those we love most. Perhaps we should stop making anger our only excuse for speaking the truth. Instead, imagine speaking a truth that is not intended to embarrass, but to empower: a truth that is not meant to insult but to inform. Imagine saying something difficult, as the truth so often is, with a spirit of reverence for the listener: and imagine that reverence being so profound that neither the truth nor the relationship between speaker and hearer is lessened in any way. Imagine how much more truth we could live and appreciate if we learned to speak it to one another in love. We can only guide people when they first know that we love them, and we can only enlighten those whom we first embrace. In love, the truth swells; in anger, it shrinks. God Bless. Club features £2,000 RAISED FOR VELINDRE

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

Members of Porthcawl’s Broadway Chorus were delighted to send £2,000 to the Velindre Cancer Centre following their Summer Serenade in June. The Concert, performed at All Saints Church, was conducted by Mike Plowman with accompanist Liz York, and featured the choir singing a wide selection of choral music, from show songs to light classical music. The enthusiastic audience also enjoyed items played by Jenny Weir, displaying her versatility on the clarinet and saxophone. Sheryl Kennedy joined her on the piano, who like Jenny, performed with skill and virtuosity. The other guest soloist was local student James Evans-Jones, singing with impressive maturity and a wide emotional range. As well as this feast of musical delights, there were drinks and summer scones during the interval, all of which helped the Summer Serenade raise £2,000 for the Velindre Cancer Centre. The Broadway Chorus will be back at All Saints on Friday December14th, with ‘Sing Christmas’, in aid of the British Heart Foundation Cymru.

Our photograph shows one lady who is not afraid to tell her age. Audrey Jones (Leyshon) is 80 everyone, and she doesn’t mind who knows it! The Coffee Morning ladies celebrated her 3 score plus 10 plus 10 by having lunch out – 28 women all sang happy birthday to her – I think our singing cleared the pub. Recently the Talbot staged an event in conjunction with the Pyle Community Council Festival Week, the theme being the Wild West. We held a Hoedown Evening, with entertainment from the New You Can Dance Wales ballet and tap classes -dancing and dressed wild western style, and the Star Linedancers with their glittery t-shirts who danced to an audience-filled hall. We had pulled pork rolls with wagon wheels to follow. All had a good time. The Fun Day down the Kenfig Hill Rugby Club playing fields proved to be another success; our stall was a game of hoop-la. All agreed it looked easy, until they tried to throw corded hoops over the painted wooden pins. Not so easy! TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE We would like to share with our readers the article below. It is the June newsletter from our head office with news of the Malawi shipment. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed, either by volunteering, donating tools or supporting us financially. We will be taking a break during August so cannot collect or receive any tools; you can still contact us for deliveries and collections from September. Your tools have begun their journey to Malawi… “On Thursday 28th June, at 1pm the final pallet of toolkits was loaded, the container was sealed, and began its journey from the Tools for Self Reliance workshop in Netley Marsh. 6,626 of your tools in 160 kits, to support 5 vocational training projects, are on their way to in Malawi. Each and every one of you, who support us in so many important ways, has not only contributed to giving old tools and sewing machines heading for landfill, a new life. But, you have ensured that 394 people will have the life changing opportunity to learn a trade, and be equipped with tools, to build sustainable livelihoods.” 36 | seaside news

THE SWAN IN THE SKY One of the best known constellations is Cygnus which is the Greek word for swan. Credit where credit is due, the pattern of stars forming the Northern Cross really does bear some resemblance to a swan in flight with wings outstretched. During August it can be found directly overhead in the sky. The tail is represented by a white supergiant star called Deneb which is thought to be more than 3,000 light years away. Just think how bright it might be if it were much closer to us! A beautiful double star called Albireo depicts the swan’s beak. Binoculars will reveal it comprises of a bright blue star and another that is golden yellow. The Milky Way passes through the constellation although you will need really dark skies to observe the billions of stars within it. Cygnus is also contains a black hole known as Cygnus X-1. It’s very close to the star eta Cygni which is situated halfway between Deneb and Albireo. True, there is nothing to see but knowing where to look for a black hole is nevertheless very exciting. Mars is now at its brightest for many years and is visible in the south all evening. Clive Down FRAS

PORTHCAWL ROTARY CLUB’S CAR TREASURE HUNT

First social event of Denzil’s Presidency…Car Treasure Hunt covered parts of Garw and Maesteg Valleys and Port Talbot area…ended with a meal at The Twelve Knights. 43 Rotarians and friends took part (12 cars). The winning team was ‘Les Quizerables’ with ‘The Wanderers’ runners up (both teams pictured with President) …many scratching heads some missing turns but all enjoyed the evening. Denzil Gould, the newly appointed president of Porthcawl Rotary Club, presented the prizes.

KRUF COFFEE MORNING

Porthcawl KRUF held a very successful Coffee Morning at the RAFA Club on 28th June to raise funds for Kidney Research Wales. It was a busy morning with lots of generous supporters enjoying coffee, tea and cakes whilst browsing the many and varied items for sale on the stalls. The Committee would like to thank everyone who attended. We would also like to thank the RAFA Club for the use of the venue and also The Mayor of Porthcawl, Councillor Norah Clarke for her support. TRINITY CHURCH Our church services and activities continue as usual despite the absence of our minister who is taking a 3-month sabbatical leave. He will be spending the next two months in Trinity Church in Chicago .The Trinity members who accompanied him to Zambia have now returned. They had a fascinating time visiting schools, churches and some areas funded by church missions as well as the Victoria Falls and a safari. They have given us an interesting talk about their adventures. The next Messy Church session will be held on Sunday 16th September from 2-4 pm. All children and their families are welcome to attend the interactive sessions which include singing, stories, craft, painting, sand play and games, followed by refreshments. They are held monthly on the 3rd Sunday but sessions were not arranged in July and August due to holidays. During August we will also be having our annual day trip, which will be to Mumbles and providing outreach to Trecco Bay. Various activities for the children are planned during the week of 6th August followed by a service in St Mary’s Trecco on Sunday 12th August at 12.30. Please consult our website for details of all our forthcoming events and all are welcome to join us. Alison Meredith Thomas Communication secretary www.trinitychurchporthcawl.org

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

can only be filed if a Divorce Petition has been issued by the Court. As a general rule, a client will need to attend Mediation which is a pre-requisite to applying to the Court for a financial order and obtain a form called a FM1 which is lodged along with the Form A application. During the financial proceedings, the Court will order both parties to complete a Form E and failure to do so by one party can result in there being costs implications for the noncompliant client. As a general rule, financial proceedings once issued can take up to 6-9 months to finalise from start to finish but will be very costly! Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

Q) I am getting divorced and am frustrated that my husband is refusing to cooperate in relation to the production of his financial documents. What can I do? A) During the Divorce process, both parties will be encouraged by their respective solicitors to provide full and frank disclosure of their financial positions. The aim wherever possible is to reach an out of court settlement as financial proceedings are so costly and stressful for the client. Full disclosure is usually provided by the completion of a comprehensive document known as a Form E Statement which provides evidence of a party’s income, outgoings, assets and liabilities along with the cash equivalent transfer value of pension funds along with documentary evidence in support. Form E statements are generally exchanged on a voluntary basis between the parties with a view to negotiations then commencing. However, it should be noted that there is no automatic right of disclosure from the other spouse prior to the issuing of financial proceedings. If he or she refuses to co-operate with disclosure, a client will need to consider issuing an application known as a Form A which

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY Recently, the Alzheimer’s Society organized Dementia Action Week, an event highlighting the need to help both those living with dementia and their carers, and for communities to become more dementia friendly. Money worries can add to the stress of living with dementia, and so financial firms are becoming more understanding, nominating “dementia champions” in their offices and training staff about the challenges accompanying the condition and about how to communicate with clients who have dementia. Financial planning firms are now including wealth planning for those with dementia. The best way to help dementia sufferers is to set up a lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), but this must be set up while the person still has mental capacity. If a person loses capacity without an LPA in place, perhaps due to accident or illness, their family won’t be able to access their funds or to sell their house, if necessary, to pay for their care. An LPA is a legal document that allows you to nominate a person to make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. There are two types: one for health and welfare, the other for property and financial affairs. An LPA is useful at any age in case you have an accident or develop an illness, not just for those in later life. They cost £82.00 to set up and are becoming more popular. Conversely, without an LPA, an application must be made to the Court of Protection for the appointment of a deputy in relation to finances. This can take several months and is far more expensive. Therefore, you should consider the importance of setting up an LPA in order to avoid future difficulties. If you wish to discuss this further, please contact us at King Davies & Partners. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

LPA’s Health and welfare The organisation Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) has published a study warning that the UK is heading for an ‘incapacity crisis’, with a wide gap between the rising number of people likely to lose capacity and the relatively small number who have arranged a property and finances and health and welfare lasting power of attorney. The report shows that the number of people diagnosed with dementia in the UK increased by more than 50 per cent in the 11 years from 2005/6 to 2016/17, and now stands at 540,000. When undiagnosed cases are added in, the number is estimated to be closer to 850,000. That will rise rapidly in the next decade, probably reaching a million diagnosed cases by 2025, plus another 300,000 undiagnosed. Of the 12.8 million British residents over the age of 65, one in 14 will develop dementia, says SFE. The main concern is not the financial affairs of people who lose capacity, but their future care arrangements. The also found that only 928,000 health and welfare (H&W) LPAs have been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) in England and Wales. The implication, it says, is that there are 12 million people at significant risk of dementia who have not made proper arrangements for their care in old age. Moreover, says the report, this gap is likely to widen. By 2025, on current trends there will be only 2.2 million H&W LPAs in place, leaving 13.2 million people unprepared for a loss of mental capacity. There is, says SFE, a ‘huge disparity between our wishes and what will happen in reality’ – largely because people are unaware of the risks. SFE is calling for a significant increase in the take-up of H&W LPAs to match the boom taking place in financial LPAs. ‘The taboo around medical decisions and end of life care needs to be broken and H&W LPAs should be a topic of discussion around any dinner table’, it urges. ‘Nothing offers more protection and control than putting an H&W LPA in place’, says the organisation. ‘Conversations [with relatives] are important, but it’s also necessary to set out what you want in writing. Even creating an email trail with key decisions will help, but the best way to do this is to formalise your wishes in an H&W LPA. This eliminates doubt and gives legal validity to your choices.’ Call 01656 772211 or visit www.djm.law.co.uk

Women’s institutions PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS At our last meeting the top table looked different from usual as our chairman and vice-chairman were in Brighton at our National A.G.M. Our President Sandra Phillips chaired the meeting and welcomed two visitors and the speaker, Mr John Hugh Thomas. He told us about Adelina Patti . I had of course heard of her but didn’t know what a world famous singer she had been or how much money she had made and put into developing her Welsh home Craig-y-nos. We heard a very cracked recording of her singing “Home Sweet Home” a favourite in her day. She came to this part of Wales because a local M.P. was a great admirer. Our enjoyable monthly lunch was at the Farmers Arms in St. Brides Major. Madeleine Moon has invited us to an EqualiTea celebrating women getting the vote 100 years ago. Ceri Joseph from the Museum is also celebrating that with a walk and float in the Carnival in which we will be taking part. We have no meeting in August but are looking forward to our Afternoon Tea on August 15th. Dorothy Thomas Tel: 772157

Early Deadline Notification: Sunday 12th August For our 20th Anniversary issue in September NEWTON WI The July meeting was taken by Vice President: Anna Price. Shirley Brown our delegate at the ‘National Federation of WI AGM’ at Cardiff, gave her report. Dianne Raybould and Linda Edinborough spoke of their overnight stay at Denman and the ‘Silver Clay Course’ they did, proudly displaying the beautiful jewellery they crafted. The speakers for the month were Roy and Mags Hibbert, who are voluntary workers for ‘Samaritans Purse Christmas Child Operation’. They do wonderful work organising the collection of gift filled shoeboxes and distributing them to underprivileged children, mainly in Macedonia. Their reward is the joy on children’s faces when receiving these boxes. Our Summer Tea on June 20th was a resounding success, the tables beautifully laid with delicious sandwiches, cakes, scones and strawberries and cream. Meryl Evans and Val Thomas who were founder members, were presented with trophies in appreciation of their 56 years loyalty and support to Newton WI. PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL Hello. I hope you all enjoyed the lovely weather we had. We have been busy over the last couple of months. The yearly handovers have all gone well. We now have new leaders and lots of new charities to work for. It is the time of year for garden parties and time for fun. Five members from Porthcawl group were invited to a garden party hosted by a member of Tywi Camarthen. Her home was in a most beautiful setting and the hard work of the group made it a most enjoyable afternoon. Elizabeth Jones is kindly hosting our Porthcawl summer tea party again and we are assured of a lovely afternoon. We do not meet in August so the next meeting will be on Tuesday 4th of September. If anyone would like to come along to our friendly active group you will be welcome. The venue is the Grove Golf club and the meeting starts at 7pm. IW will have had a £1 stall at the carnival, I hope you all took the chance of winning one of the valuable surprise gifts. Our members for the benefit of local charities donated all these. THE PAPERWORK PEOPLE TURN 3! It’s our 3rd Birthday & we would just like to say a very big Thank You to everyone who has supported us on our journey. Our clients come from many sources but the support other local businesses have given by recommending clients to us has been tremendous and we are very grateful to you. We always return the compliment when we can. When we started this family run business, our objective was to provide a place to go where people could get help and advice for all sorts of issues. From our main core of our business of Will Writing, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Estate Administration we also help with more day to day things such as form filling for passports, important phone calls and letter writing and… well to be honest the list is endless. We’ve even traced a mother in Australia and found the records of an adopted child. We’ve listened to you and you’ve told us that you need support during the assessment stages for Social Care for your families and we’ve undertaken extensive training and research in these areas to offer this kind of support to you. A number of people have said to us that they like the informal way we do business and we intend to keep it that way. We’re friendly and straight forward and there will never be a hard sell because we don’t need to. If you like us and we can help, it all happens naturally. The important thing to know is that you’re in safe hands, Sue is a retired solicitor and now a Member of the Institute of Professional Willwriters. Business & finance LEAVE IT TOO LATE AT YOUR PERIL… This year so far, there’s been a marked uptake in people making Lasting Powers of Attorney and one of the reasons, it would seem is that with a great many people living longer than previous generations yet becoming incapable of looking after their affairs as they get older, families are finding in many cases, that they have left it too late to get this done. When we get into what our forebears would have called ‘old age’, a whole new raft of considerations come into play: making sure Wills are made and up-to-date; ensuring that money is where it needs to be to effectively support longer living; giving Power of Attorney to those we trust to look after our affairs should we unexpectedly be unable to do so ourselves; ensuring that funeral arrangements are made and made known to our families, to ensure the least disruption when the time comes to tie up our affairs and estate. It can be somewhat underestimated how much those in the age group 60-plus carry in assets which can be rather substantial, not necessarily always in the form of ready cash or investments but in property and other forms of wealth. Indeed, a large number of people carry wealth that is not always available to use for income or living purposes but still needs to be taken consideration of and protected from both the ravages of inflation and the Taxman, who will waste no time in seeking out his share! The whole essence of this article is to encourage you to take a serious look at your affairs as they stand now and to seek advice and instigate appropriate action to ensure that all we’ve worked hard, often over a lifetime, is properly taken care of, both for our families and ourselves. Call us on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 for an informal and relaxed chat about those things you need to address. We offer free appointments when you can openly make known your concerns and we can guide you accordingly. We look forward to helping you achieve the solutions you require. INCOME DRAWDOWN Income drawdown is where you leave your pension pot invested and take an income directly from it, instead of using the money in your pot to buy an annuity from an insurance company. As the rest of your pension pot remains invested, it will continue to benefit from any investment growth. Since pension reforms were introduced in April 2015, more and more retirees have opted to take flexible withdrawals from their pension funds, and the Financial Conduct Authority has reported that drawdown has become much more popular, with twice as many pots moving into drawdown than into annuities. UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS Whilst drawdown offers great flexibility, there are risks that you need to be aware of. Unlike an annuity the amount you could draw as income isn’t guaranteed. Your pension fund remains invested which means that you are exposed to share price movements as markets rise and fall. This makes it even more important to take good independent professional advice. Without it you could find your income level falls and you might even risk running out of money at some point. 42 | seaside news

In drawdown, there are risks involved both in taking out too little and too much. If you draw too little you might not have sufficient to cover your living expenses, taking out too much could have tax implications and also restrict your remaining pension pot’s ability to provide an income throughout your retirement. This is where your financial adviser can provide valuable input, helping you plan your drawdown strategy and ensuring that it’s kept under regular review. Although it’s no longer obligatory to take an annuity at retirement, they still have benefits to offer. It is possible to put a portion of your pension pot into an annuity to provide a regular guaranteed amount for the rest of your life. Some people choose to do this to ensure they cover their core living costs. PHILIP VAUGHAN Abacus Assurance 01656 772222

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

Towards the end of August those of us with a competitive spirit begin the final stages of preparation for our annual show in the club, which is being held on the 1st September. Although we have been planning and preparing for our 48th show since early spring, it is only now that we can resolve which of our treasured fruit, vegetables and flowers will go forward for exhibition and all our attention will be focused on the selected produce. As well as showing the traditional bench exhibits our club also encourages members to participate in a wealth of other areas to exhibit their skills. These include preserves, baking, needle craft, a range of artwork and photography. This year we have a new section for children and families to encourage our new (and younger) members. Gardening at this time of year tends to slow down a little as the rush to keep up with jobs eases off from the pace set during spring and early summer. Keeping on top of the weeding, deadheading, harvesting, watering and feeding seems a little more relaxed. Don’t forget that now is the time to begin to take cuttings and save seed in order to propagate favourite plants. New members are always welcome – find out more at: lalestongardenclub.co.uk Joyce Pegg

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Isn’t marvelous, now that it’s time to enjoy the garden its star inhabitants up and leave you! August brings long warm evenings to sit out but it also spells the wane of the majority of the spring performers. To encourage sweet peas, cosmos and pelargoniums to keep blooming keep deadheading every few days, if you have a few gaps in your borders sow some salad leaves; they give colour in four weeks (and you haven’t got far to go to make a salad!) In the vegetable patch it’s definitely harvest time with a vengeance, pick French and runner beans, little and often, leaving mature pods to set seed can prevent further flowers developing and reduce your crop. Courgettes (I love them!) little baby courgettes one day, ruddy great marrows the next! So pick them regularly too, unless marrows are your thing. Don’t worry about your lawn going brown; it will soon revert to a lush green after the inevitable autumn rains, mow it with the blades on high and leave the clippings on the lawn as a mulch to help retain moisture, Have faith! Gardeners’ recipe – one part soil – two parts water – three parts wishful thinking!

BLOOMIN BEAUTIFUL Readers of Seaside News will be aware that the little boat on the A4106 (Bridgend Road), just past the Porthcawl Town sign as one comes down from Tythegston, is maintained by the Wilderness Allotments Association, Heol Y Godwig. It’s just one of the voluntary community activities for which the Wilderness was given the European Allotment Award last year. Against a backcloth of one of the hottest and driest summers on record, it’s taken much effort by the three volunteers pictured to keep the boat looking beautiful for the thousands of visitors to Porthcawl. The boat is a very successful partnership between various organisations: - Tools for Self-Reliance (TFSR); BCBC Green Spaces; Sustainable Wales, who run Porthcawl’s only dedicated Fairtrade shop ‘Sussed’, by the bandstand; 1st Porthcawl Scouts (Woodland Hall) and the Wilderness Allotments. However, nothing could have been achieved this summer without the generosity of the neighbouring householder who allows us to have water! Health & wellbeing TALK ON TEA

email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk

BENEFITS OF THE HUMBLE STRAWBERRY Many health benefits are claimed for the strawberry including for the following: Osteoarthritis, cognition, blood sugar control, heart and increased antioxidants. Read the details at www.greenmedinfo.com As an example, a large study of 16,010 women over the age of seventy found that eating more strawberries is associated with significant delaying of cognitive ageing by up to 2.5 years. The benefit is believed to be because of the flavonoids in the strawberries. Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

LIVING A LIFE OF GENEROSITY

A very interesting and informative talk was given by Mrs Pat Richards on the History of tea. Pat brought many items used over years of how even today Tea remains a very important item in Britain’s global trade, contributing in part to Britain’s global dominance by the end of the eighteen century. To this day tea is seen worldwide as a symbol of Britishness; although tea became popular in Britain during the 17th century, it was originated in Southwest Lebanon during the Shang dynasty as a medicinal drink, it has been a global phenomena. The history of tea is long and complex, spreading across multiple cultures over the span of thousands of years and there are many different flavours out today. It is still as popluar as ever, with many afternoon tea places offering their services. On behalf of the Porthcawl Stroke Club Barbara Matthews ( Mrs)

Each day prepare the mind with meditation – allowing calm to settle your mind. Intentional – stop frequently and ask yourself, in this moment, what is this intention? Is this impending decision free from desire, hostility and indifference? With this question - direct your awareness to the heart area? Notice the ease or the trouble. Pause again, all moments in the mind are impermanent. Patience is your long-term friend. Personal practice – pay attention to your hands, your hands are the gateway to interaction and the mirror of your actions. Intentional – once the following conditions are truly cultivated, act with presence. Notice the slow interaction and process. Interpersonal – give to the environment that you are immersed in, plants, gardens, pets, people, family, work etc. Give with no expectation or reward. Intergenerational – cross over with all people and recollect the good feelings that you have previously developed. Let this be your power, share that power. Organisational – in whatever aspect of your life you find yourself in, when you recognise an inflation of ‘I’ ‘me’ ‘us’ ‘mine’ – break that construct by giving something. Don’t fall for ‘I’ and ‘Me’. Let zeal distinguish you. Generosity is the antidote of stinginess. Contemplative dimension – use the full moon time to recall all your monthly acts of ‘good’. Neville Evans

Arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Twenty years ago I spent several days at Nash Point lighthouse, working on Carl Richards’s documentary production, filming the final days of the last lighthouse keepers before it was automated, and we have returned many times since to shoot more scenes in order to tell the story in greater detail. A short edited version, entitled ‘At Nash Point’, is now being shown in the Visitor Centre at the lighthouse. For the last twelve months I have joined the team of volunteer visitor guides, welcoming people to the lighthouse every weekend between March and October. It is very popular, we have visitors from far and wide, and for a modest entrance fee (adult £4.00, child £2.00 or £10.00 for a family ticket) you can go right up to the top of the tower, where the view across the Bristol Channel can be spectacular. If you haven’t already been, why not take the chance to visit this summer, but it’s a good idea to check on Facebook (Nash Point Lighthouse) first or ring Chris Williams on 07850 047721 because weddings are held there, too, and on those days the tower is closed to the public. ROGER HUDD AWARDED THE BEM

A long time resident of Porthcawl, Roger has been awarded this for ‘services to Charity and the Arts’. It’s well deserved, as over 20 years, Roger, founder and Musical Director of The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards, has raised over £65,000 for 20 different charities. Now still a youthful, energetic 84 year old, Roger developed his interest in music after beginning piano and violin lessons while a schoolboy in Bristol. His love for Gilbert and Sullivan began when he was 12 and 48 | seaside news

played in his school orchestra for a production of ‘Trial by Jury’. Roger studied Natural Sciences at Selwyn College, Cambridge and started work as a research physicist at the Richard & Baldwin Steel company, Aylesbury. He and his wife Yvonne moved to South Wales in 1968. Conductor and founder of Operatic Societies in the Gower, Cowbridge and Porthcawl, amongst others, Roger was perfectly equipped to found The Savoyards. Singers, orchestra and behind stage helpers all give time and skills freely. He and Yvonne received the Mayor’s Citizenship Award in 2013. Currently Roger is founder member, deputy conductor and Treasurer of Cor Bro Ogwr and sings with Tabernacle Music Society. Productions for 2018 and 2019 are already booked up! Dominique Spearey

Early Deadline Notification: Sunday 12th August For our 20th Anniversary issue in September STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Bridgend rock giants Bullet For My Valentine have a new album out called ‘Gravity’ and Matt and the lads will be playing at the Cardiff Motorpoint Arena on November 11th, so get your tickets now. A big thanks to Sarn-based indie band Carolines for their 4-track CD, and Porthcawl teen rocker Layla John’s ‘onefiveeight’ album. Carolines’s songs have a strong groove to them – ‘Jealous’ is the best – while Layla’s material, recorded at her own studio, is a good cross between punk and rock. Both worth checking out live, I reckon! As always, my minders and I will be down at the Newton Festival on Saturday August 25th. It kicks off at 11.00am and 11 acts are on the bill, including Rebecca Hurn, Tex and the Mushrooms and bill toppers Sex, who feature my old mate singer Phil Jones. By all means if you spot me say “hi” and have a selfie, as I’m a lot more approachable and modest than in my fame days in the 90s. You get like that when you reach 47. I will try not to have too many sherbets and catch all the bands for a change. Next month, Jayce Lewis tour news! Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR The Choir and supporters returned in June from a very successful short tour to Blankenberge in Belgium, giving a single concert, which was well received by all. We have since performed in Cardiff for the International Law School, to a very appreciative audience of delegates from around the world. Preparations are now in hand for several upcoming weddings and our Annual Concert in The Grand Pavilion Porthcawl, on the 8th Sept., where we will be joined by The 4 Tunes, four young singers who have had wide success in musical theatre, taking lead roles in the West End. They have come together to sing iconic songs spanning the world of pop, opera, & musical theatre. Two of the quartet are Welsh, Michael Conway hails from Porthcawl, having attended Porthcawl Comprehensive School. Tickets are available from choir members, or contact the Secretary. The Choir are currently inviting applications for the position of Deputy Musical Director, a position held by our very own Roy Bowen, who after many years of service has decided to step down and disappear into the depths of the second bass. The choir would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for his work and support to Mair over the years. John Jones – Secretary johnj.mairj@hotmail.co.uk Tel 07989 461122

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service

is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Stormy Down, North Cornelly, South Cornelly, Kenfig, Mawdlam, Margam Village, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribwr, Pen-y-Fai, Laleston, Broadlands,

Whiterock, Brackla, Coity, Bryntirion & Bridgend town centre and Welsh business owner Phil Powell agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

of three very British gentlemen who exhume the characteristics of a crooner - suave, self-assured, stylish, as they defend the role of a crooner in our modern world. By the very same nature, it is not always obvious that these characteristics are adopted quite so well by the quintessentially British. Cue a splendiferous injection of British comedy. Tongue firmly in cheek. And an Outrageous injection of Big Band Swing. This rip roaring comedy musical has been wowing audiences with its witty and exhilarating show full of satirical energy, hilarious one liners, laugh out loud silliness and superb musical numbers. Featuring the outstanding and uncompromising live, on stage musicianship of the 9-piece band ‘The Mini Big Band’, these Crooners feature songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Matt Monro, Nat King Cole and Bobby Darin. Expect some Lady is a Tramp, Come Fly With Me, L.O.V.E, When You’re Smiling, Fly Me To The Moon, Beyond The Sea, Mac The Knife and many more. Summer is now properly upon us and the warm weather and favourable tides have meant some fantastic beach training sessions have taken place in recent weeks. Plans are now in full swing for the annual Round the Bay Swim, which is organised by Porthcawl Lifeguard Club. It is being held on Coney Beach on Sunday 19th August with the swim starting at 12:00. Registration will start at 11:00 at the Lifeguard Hut and parking will be available. Full details can be found on our website (see below for details). Despite challenging sea conditions last year there was a very competitive entry list and we are hoping the great weather continues through until August. PLGC training is on Tuesdays from 6.30pm-7.30pm and on Sundays from 3.00pm to 4.00pm (note new time) on the beach,

The clubs primary goal is to save lives. A major part of this objective is fulfilled by operating weekend voluntary beach patrols every weekend between May and September. It is a vital service and has already proved its worth, as in a matter of weeks the patrols have completed 6 rescues, 100+ assists, various first aid incidents, a spinal board recovery and CPR. The waters around Ogmore by Sea can be dangerous. Hazards include strong currents, the river, winds and rocks. When visiting Ogmore by Sea: * Do not swim in the river or on the river side of the red flag. * If you cross the river, check tide times. You will not be able to walk back across when the tide starts coming in. * When in the sea, look around the main beach area and be mindful of any stationary object to use as a fixing point. * Do not use inflatables when there is an offshore wind. * Always supervise children in or near the water. * If in doubt, ask for advice at the lifeguard station. For more information about beach safety, please visit our newly improved website at www.penybontslsc.org.uk and select Beach Safety from the menu.

REST BAY NIPPERS WELSH CHAMPIONS 2018

Over the weekend of the 14/15th July Rest Bay Nippers competed in the Welsh Championships at Barry Island. The weather was glorious on both days and the standard of competition high. 58 Nippers from Rest Bay managed to beat all before them to become Welsh Champions for the 5th year in a row! There were a host of outstanding individual and team performances from the youngest age group to the oldest, through all the events, which included the surf race, board race, flags, sprint and long run, plus all the team events. But possibly the most outstanding moment came when two of our nippers helped another nipper from a different club cross the line in the long run. This superb bit of sportsmanship didn’t go unnoticed with a number of comments from parents and other clubs as to what a wonderful gesture it was from our kids. And Carys Richards and Harriet Shroll can be extremely proud of what they did and are a credit to the club.

REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB NIPPERS SECTION

The effort, drive, skill, determination and team spirit from all of our nippers over the two days was outstanding. And the hard work put into the training sessions during the weeks leading up to the Welsh Championships really paid dividends. Now it’s onto the British Championships down in Holywell Bay, Cornwall towards the end of August. Lets hope the weather continues to be kind to us all! Summer is here and it’s time to get your outside space in order. Why not give us a call, and we can give you some great ideas to improve your home’s kerb appeal.

Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
