BEATRICE ‘ROSE’ HOWELLS – 104th BIRTHDAY

Dear Editor, On June 11th Monkstone House resident Beatrice ‘Rose’ Howells celebrated her 104th Birthday. Rose was born in 1912 in Merthyr Tydfil, where her parents owned a fish and chip shop, before moving to London. Rose worked in a factory during the Second World War. Later she owned and maintained a boarding house with her husband Emlyn. Rose and Emlyn enjoyed many cruises and travelled on Concord from Cardiff to New York. Rose enjoyed dancing, swimming, reading and walking, dressing well and wearing jewellery. Family, friends, residents and staff celebrated Rose’s birthday with her, enjoying a ‘Traditional Afternoon Tea Party’, where Rose was visited by the newly appointed Mayor and Mayoress of Porthcawl, who presented Rose with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Many Congratulations to Rose! Fran Rossini

THE ELUSIVE CLOCK AT REST BAY LIFEGUARD STATION Dear Editor, In September 2014 we donated a large outside clock to Rest Bay Lifeguards to be displayed on their balcony (after first asking them if they would like it). Over the year many surfers used to ask us the time we thought it might be a good idea. They have had it on display about three times in two years. In 2015 we wrote to the head lifeguard and spoke to him. He assured us they would mount it securely and put it on display. 2016 arrives still no clock. We approach the RNLI who are now responsible for the beach and speak to the same head lifeguard of Rest Bay club. STILL NO CLOCK. This season is now more than half way through. We feel very hurt and disappointed as a family. I seem to remember a time when they appealed for money for their quad bike that was stolen, yet when someone gives them something useful they appear not to appreciate it. Dear Editor, Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat Crew welcomed their RNLI Lifeguard colleagues to their station at the Harbour in Porthcawl, to launch this year’s Respect The Water campaign. This year is the first season for the beaches in Porthcawl to be patrolled by professional RNLI Lifeguards. Ross Martin, the Deputy Launching Authority for Porthcawl RNLI said “we are looking forward this summer season to working with our RNLI Lifeguards this year. We have already participated in several joint training events, and we were involved in 2 rescues last weekend.” They met at the tonne of water display on the Pormenade, that this year emphasises the power of the sea around the coast of Wales. One of the Respect The Water initiatives Porthcawl RNLI have been working on is encouraging swimmers using the sea to make themselves more visible by carrying with them lightweight orange swim floats. These floats help boat and Jet Ski’s users to see the swimmers, and they can then take action to avoid them. More advice on RNLI Sea Safety can be found on the RNLI Website respectthewater.com and rnli.org.uk. Ross Martin

SCHOOLS BRIDGEND PRIMARY SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE

The final meeting and presentations for the Bridgend Primary Schools Cross Country League were held at Brynteg Comprehensive School last Saturday the 18th of June. During the winter season pupils from the majority of the Bridgend Primary schools took part, with an average of 350 children competing at each fixture. The school with the highest overall points was West Park Primary, closely followed by Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Ogwr and Maes Yr Haul Primary. The Cups for the winning schools within each age group, plus the individual trophies, were kindly provided by the Rotary Club of Bridgend and presented by their club President Mr Alan Reeks. Mr Reeks commended all the children that had taken part and congratulated all the age group winners. He thanked Mel James, together with Mr Neil Clode (Deputy Head of Llangewydd Primary) and Mari Higginson (Bridgend AC) for their fantastic job in organising the league throughout the winter months. Mel James conveyed his thanks to all the teachers/parents/ grandparents for their support throughout the year and the Rotary Club of Bridgend for their sponsorship. He said that once again he took pleasure and pride in helping to promote running for school children within the Bridgend area. Major (Retd) Wayne B Morgan MBE

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY TOP THE PODIUM! Last month the Formula 1 Primary School National Finals took place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. Our team, Porthcawl Power, qualified to represent Wales after designing the fastest car in the regional heat. The National Finals saw the best 32 schools from across the UK compete to see who the overall champion was. The day started with a phone call from Chris Evans on the Radio 2 Breakfast show so we knew we were in for a good day! Throughout the day the team were a credit to the school and Wales. On top of racing the car they completed an eight minute presentation, made a portfolio and pit lane display and spoke to engineers. At the awards ceremony we were hopeful of winning a category but were shocked and delighted to be crowned UK Champions for 2016! Porthcawl Primary becoming National Champions is a massive achievement and Tegan, Grace, Erin, Chantal, Ffion and Zane should feel incredibly proud of all the hard work they have put in this year. On top of this we also won a teamwork award at the first Sony Digital Literacy awards meaning we have had a very successful end to the school year! We hope everyone has a great summer! ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL It is now the end of the summer term and what a busy one it has been! Transition days, Sixth Form Prom, Sports day and the Annual School trips to Thorpe Park and Chessington have all taken place. We have recently had a party of 30 Taiwanese students on a cultural exchange to the school. It has been fantastic to see our Ambassadors from years 7, 8 and 9 overcome the language barrier to make these young people a part of our school community. We would like to thank our head girl, Hannah Cahalane, and head boy, William Kay, for all their hard work and wish them every success in the future. The new head boy and head girl for 2016-2017 are Joshua Wallace and Lucy Clare. Congratulations to both! Finally, this year we say goodbye and best wishes to Mrs N Lambert, Miss C Bamsey, Miss H Phipps and Mrs L Ylinen who are off to pastures new, and to Mr G Price and Mrs Sharon John who are retiring, we wish them both a long and very happy retirement. We look forward to welcoming our new year 7 pupils in September. Have a good holiday everyone! Mrs Angela Keller Head Teacher Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

SCHOOLS THE DAY WEST PARK MET THE QUEEN!

smell and one POW said “What on earth is that smell?” The reply came saying “crematorium - where they burn them!” It took them about three weeks before they believed that the Nazis were burning and gassing the Jews. Ron also remembered that he had managed to acquire some meat in which he gave to one of the Jews named Yosaf. Days afterwards Yosaf gave Ron a ring which he had made out of a steel pipe - such was his gratitude to Ron. About two to three weeks later Yosaf did not come into work and Ron asked “where is Yosaf this morning?” They replied “gas chamber”. To this day Ron still wears that ring and showed the pupils the ring on his visit! Ceris Matthews

On Tuesday 7th June, Queen Elizabeth opened the fifth Welsh Assembly in Cardiff. Years 5/6 were fortunate enough to attend this event. After arriving in Cardiff Bay, we were asked if we would like to move to a prime location just outside the Assembly building. Unknown to us, we were standing exactly where the Queen, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and Camilla got out of their cars! They walked up the slip right beside us! Twenty minutes later, they returned to their vehicles – but this was not before we spoke and shook hands with the Royal party. The Queen told us she was lucky to have two birthdays and had enjoyed her 90th birthday. As if this wasn’t enough excitement, we were later interviewed by The Western Mail, and ITV and our photographs even appeared in national newspapers. The evening news showed interviews with some pupils too. We were very proud when our excellent behaviour was commented upon by security, Welsh Assembly members and the police! The day was an experience of a lifetime and we are sure the memory will stay with us forever. The Arch Bishop of Wales visited us in July and attended an assembly led by Father Craig. Year 5 then presented the Arch Bishop with a question and answer session. Pupils had a great time and Arch Bishop Barry Morgan commented on how polite and well-mannered the pupils at our school were. We’ve had a fabulous year, enjoy the summer! Year 5 journalists

RON JONES – ‘A STORY TO REMEMBER!’

Ron Jones – a 99 year old Prisoner of war camp survivor of ‘Auschwitz 3’ recalled his remarkable and poignant story to Year 10 pupils at Bryntirion Comprehensive School as part of their Religious Education/Welsh Bac programme. Pil Primary School’s Eco Committee have worked extremely hard this year to support the whole school to achieve our Eco targets. We have all been busy developing a global link with our partnership school Fairway Primary in Mbale, Uganda. Pupils and staff have enjoyed communicating through letter writing and are looking forward to future projects. The school recently held their annual Eco week and were involved in many activities such as walk to school week, fundraising for the charity ‘Size of Wales’ and planting projects to encourage pollinators to our school grounds. In addition to this exciting news the schools netball and football teams showed off their sporting talents during the Litchard Tournament. The Netball girls finished first place in the competition- a big well done to all who took part! We also say goodbye to Mrs Jean Williams who has taught in Pil for 28 years in the Special Needs class, and Mrs Judith Styles who is an LSO. From all the staff, pupils and parents we thank them for all their hard work and wish them a long, happy retirement. We also say goodbye to our Year 6, who will be attending Cynffig Comprehensive School in September. Best wishes for the future. N Pryce Head Teacher

SCHOOLS SUMMER FUN FOR CHILDREN AGED TWO TO TWELVE There are a range of play schemes and other summer activities taking place throughout the county borough during the school holidays, so children aged between 2-12 will have no excuse for being bored. The Play Ranger Programme is new for 2016 and features fun outdoor events that show children how to make rope swings, dens, water slides and more. It is designed to encourage children to put down their computer games, play outside and enjoy some traditional fun in the sun, all while learning about nature. Elsewhere, Mini Play 4 Life sessions aimed at 2-7 year olds will help children develop their agility, balance and co-ordination skills, while the Active4Life programme caters for 8-12 year olds and focuses on sports, traditional play and fun, healthy activities. Many of these have been established in partnership with town and community councils, but that’s not all - Welsh language holiday activities are also available in partnership with Menter Bro Ogwr and Urdd Gobaith Cymru, and there are a whole range of additional activities offered by the likes of Flying Start, Communities First, the summer reading challenge at local libraries, Bryngarw Country Park, Halo Leisure and more. BOOK OF THE MONTH Sleeper’s Castle by Barbara Erskine Hay-On-Wye, 1400 War is brewing in the Welsh borders, and Catrin is on the brink of womanhood and falling in love. Her father is a soothsayer, playing on the mixed loyalties and rivalries between Welsh princes and English lords. For two hundred years, the Welsh people have lain under the English yoke, dreaming of independence, and it looks as though Owain Glyndwr may be the man legend talks of. In the walls of Sleeper’s Castle, Catrin finds herself caught in the middle of a doomed war as she is called upon to foretell Wales’s destiny… Hay, 2015. Miranda has moved to Sleeper’s Castle to escape and grieve. Slowly she feels herself coming to life in the solitude of the mountains. But every time she closes her eyes her dreams become more vivid. She makes a connection with a young girl, who’s screaming, who’s reaching out… who only Miranda can help. All these books and many more are available to borrow from Bridgend Libraries. We have books to help you on your travels, inspire new challenges or simply relax. Seaside News | 24

PLANS TO HELP REFUGEES REVEALED

NEW PLAN FOR PORTHCAWL

Local authorities are working with the UK Government to help refugees who are fleeing the Syrian conflict, and Bridgend County Borough Council is set to play its part. We recently revealed how 10 to 12 families will be re-homed in the county borough over a five year period. This will be in partnership with a private housing association, so no one who is already on a housing list will miss out or be asked to give up their place. Under the terms of the UK resettlement deal, the refugees will be here on a five year basis and will be able to live, work and contribute to the community. If it is still unsafe for them to return home after this time, they can apply to remain in the UK. Funding for their resettlement has been provided by the UK Government, and they have been thoroughly vetted and understand that breaking the terms of the deal could result in deportation. It’s important to recognise that the refugees are vulnerable families fleeing a war zone who urgently need help. I’m proud that Bridgend County Borough Council is doing its bit, and I hope that residents will welcome and support them too.

Porthcawl is not immune from the political upheaval of the last month. Any certainty would be welcome at the moment. That’s why the regeneration of the town is so important. BCBC say that their new blueprint is being finalised before going out to public consultation. That will give everyone a chance to have their say – whether they are a tourism operator, or just a resident fed up with the twin wildernesses of Salt Lake and Sandy Bay. A premium food store would help Porthcawl develop as a destination town for the region, as would the provision of quality leisure facilities being devised outside the civic centre. Porthcawl now faces challenges beyond the local authority’s drag on progress. The regulations which help the town exploit its blue flag status cannot be lost as a result of eventual Brexit. Welsh Government needs to consider that now. And Porthcawl must not fall between the cracks of new economic opportunity. The town is on the edge of the Cardiff City Deal region whilst being geographically located on Swansea Bay but the Swansea Bay City Region looks firmly westward. Confidence in the ability of BCBC officials and councillors to take Porthcawl forward has never been more necessary.

ENJOY SUMMER FUN AND SET A NEW WORLD RECORD Children across Bridgend County Borough are being invited to tackle this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and help set a new world record. With six-foot-high stacks of brand new Roald Dahl books delivered to every library - the same height of the big friendly author – in preparation for this year’s scheme, more than 3,000 children are expected to take part. To complete the Summer Reading Challenge, children are expected to read six or more library books over the school holidays. A number of other events featuring themed storytelling, crafts and more have been arranged throughout July and August to help support the scheme and support national celebrations marking 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl. On Saturday 20 August, children are being invited to dress up as their favourite Roald Dahl character and gather at Newbridge Fields in Bridgend between 11am-1pm with the aim of setting a new world record. The record attempt event will feature entertainment from author Mark Brake, stalls, a bouncy castle and live readings of some home-grown ‘revolting rhymes’ written by local school children. It’s a great way to encourage children to read and use their local library, and you can find out more at http:// summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

SUCCESS OF PIONEERING RESEARCH IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANTS

700TH MEMBER FOR BRIDGEND BUSINESS FORUM

This week I have spent my time running around the Palace reregistering All Party Parliamentary Groups that I chair. One such group that I chair is the All Party Kidney Group. Around 6-8% of the population are estimated to have moderate to severe chronic kidney disease and it is thought that there are 1 million undiagnosed patients. Whilst a large part of my role as chair is to bring continued awareness to issues, I also endeavour to highlight successes. So, I want to congratulate Professor Mike Nicholson at the University of Cambridge for his pioneering research in kidney transplantation. This relates to the advancement of a technique which warms and flushes a donor kidney to restore metabolism and function prior to transplantation. Currently, over 5,600 people in the UK are waiting for a kidney transplant, yet only 3,000 transplants are carried out each year. This technique has the potential to significantly contribute to tackling the shortage of kidneys, by restoring function to 81 per cent of donor kidneys that are thrown away each year having been deemed as unsuitable for transplantation. The first ever transplantations using this technique have recently taken place in the UK, helping more people live free from the life-limiting effects of kidney disease.

I was really pleased to see homeless charity The Wallich become the Bridgend Business Forum’s 700th member organisation recently. The Bridgend Business Forum was established eight years ago as a way of helping local organisations by providing an official network where they can work together, learn from one another’s experiences and share examples of best business practice. The forum organises a programme of events that take place throughout the year and which are designed to keep businesses informed about relevant issues such as funding opportunities, employment law, human resources, training, social media marketing and more. Membership of the forum is free and ranges from big employers to small-to-medium-sized enterprises, charitable organisations and more. As well as offering an important way of maintaining a strong and successful link between the private and public sector, the Bridgend Business Forum also runs the annual Bridgend Business Forum Awards which feature categories such as Start-up Business of the Year, Manufacturing Business of the Year, Business Student of the Year and more, all designed to give local businesses and entrepreneurs a chance to gain the recognition that they deserve. I strongly urge any local business, big or small, to find out more by visiting www.bridgendbusinessforum.co.uk

HARBOURSIDE NEWS A CELEBRATION OF THE WORK OF PORTHCAWL ART SOCIETY Next month, I will be supporting a special exhibition at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay by the Porthcawl Art Society who are celebrating their 50th anniversary. The exhibition will run from the 12th to the 18th September in the Oriel, at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. There will also be a reception to promote their display. I am very much looking forward to welcoming the Porthcawl Art Society to the Senedd and to lend my support to the exhibition. Having the exhibition at the Senedd is a fantastic opportunity for the Art Society’s work to be showcased and to be seen by a wider audience. The Art Society holds regular exhibitions at its home at the Old Police Station in John Street where people can visit and look at a variety of original paintings. Last December, I had the honour of choosing my favourite artwork from the Art Society’s winter exhibition. It was a very difficult decision. They were all really good. After a lot of consideration, I eventually chose my winner, a picture of Newton Church in the snow painted by Wendy DavisWilliams. I liked the painting so much I bought it! But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. PORTHCAWL MUSEUM Have you ever noticed the Commonwealth War Graves in St John’s Churchyard, Newton? Next time you should visit, please pay your respects for Private John Campbell, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, who drowned on 24th August 1916. His battalion was part of the 9th Scottish Division, involved in heavy fighting on the Somme. On 17th July, John Campbell was wounded. He was transferred to the 3rd Western General Hospital, Cardiff, suffering with serious wounds in his thigh, and shoulder, from shrapnel and shellshock. On 8th August 1916 he was transferred to The St John’s Auxiliary Hospital, Rest Bay, Porthcawl, to convalesce. John had recovered from his wounds, which potentially meant a return to active service. On Tuesday, 24th August 1916, at 10.30am, his body was retrieved from the sea, opposite the Sea Bank Hotel. The inquest held into his death a week later, recorded a verdict of ‘found drowned.’ Studying the inquest, you cannot fail to note the tragic effect of shellshock. Although, his brothers, Alec and Robert, made the journey from Lanarkshire for the funeral, they declined to take his body home. Thus, Private Campbell has lain in Porthcawl soil for a hundred years. THE TALBOT We have had a busy time lately. We celebrated HM Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday by holding a garden tea party. Our guests played the part by dressing in their posh frocks with matching hats and eating cream scones, trifles, ice creams and dipping marshmallows in the chocolate fountain. The Talbot was the venue for the Mynydd Cynffig Women’s Institute Inaugural Bake It competition. Three of the Talbot’s members won their cake classes, and were given certificates to mark the occasion. Lastly, we joined in the Fun Day for the Pyle CC Festival Week, selling jigsaws and books. Building work is still on-going and we are refurbishing our original ‘galley’ kitchen in the next few weeks, installing new cupboards and sink unit so that this kitchen can also be used for groups, birthday parties etc who want to serve their own snacks. We are now busy planning the second half of 2016, and our Christmas Showtime evening has already been arranged for Saturday 10th December – although mid-summer is not the time to think of Christmas, but …! Our membership is still open for any lapsed members. Call 01656 749754 for further information. Cheryl Butcher The Talbot

ROSETTA’S COMET CONTAINS SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS FOR LIFE Ingredients that were crucial for the origin of life on Earth, including phosphorus and the simple amino-acid glycine, which are key components of DNA and cell membranes, have been discovered in Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The possibility that water and organic molecules were brought to the early Earth through impacts of objects like asteroids and comets has long been a subject of debate. While Rosetta’s ROSINA instrument already showed a significant difference in composition between the water on Comet 67P and that on Earth, the same instrument has now shown that even if comets did not play as big a role in delivering water as was once thought, they certainly had the potential to deliver the ingredients of life. While more than 140 different molecules have already been identified in the interstellar medium, aminoacids could not be traced. However, hints of the amino-acid glycine, a biologically important organic compound commonly found in proteins, were found during the Stardust mission that flew by Comet Wild 2 in 2004. Now, for the first time, repeated detections at a comet have been confirmed by Rosetta in Comet 67P’s fuzzy atmosphere, or coma. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

FEATURES PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS I hope as you read this the weather has improved and we will have a good end to the summer. In the Guild we are always sunny-side up with plenty to occupy us whatever the weather! Our groups have been meeting as usual – we always enjoy a fish and chip lunch at Beales, and a small, but keen, group enjoy the lunchtime dramas at the Pavilion. Our speaker in May was Debra John on ‘Aspects of World War One’. We knew we were in for something special and it certainly was. Very well researched and presented in her own inimitable way. Here I should also like to congratulate Ceri Joseph and other Museum volunteers for their commemoration of the Somme conflict held at All Saints Church and attended by several Guild members - another memorable occasion. We have had an enjoyable outing to the Gower Heritage Centre despite some wet weather. Janet Anderson and I attended the Civic Service for the new mayor on behalf of the Guild. Freda Rodger as our delegate, with Dee Richardson and Judith Orphan, attended the National AGM at Bournemouth where the mandates on Organ Donation and Modern Day Slavery were debated and overwhelmingly passed. We do not have a meeting in August but are looking forward to a Cream Tea! See you in September. Dorothy Thomas Tel: 772157

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Few of us study much any more, unless we have an exam coming up. Instead, most of us would rather receive our information in small, easy to swallow chunks. If something takes more than a couple of minutes to explain then it seldom keeps our attention for long. However, God frequently does wow us with moments of beauty, insight and emotional overload. But in the pauses between these moments, learning about God is more like hard work. Any scientist will tell you that behind every ‘Eureka!’ lies thousands of hours of labour. So it is too with becoming a person of faith. It takes work with the world, and ourselves, and the lives of the people around us. It takes long engagement and focused attention and minute noticing. It takes study. So here’s our challenge. Take a few minutes every day to study the great works of God. It might be the Bible, or the seashore, or your children, or something else. Pay attention and really learn what God has done. See if you’re not a better person at the end because of it. God Bless, Lewis Rees Minister with Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES ‘New’ Christian Churches are starting up all over Wales. They tend to be lively in worship, committed to Jesus and attended by younger families. ‘New’ churches in our area include ones in Pyle, Bridgend, Port Talbot, and Cowbrige. A great example is Grace Community Church here in Porthcawl. Starting in 2005, they met for many years in a hall at Porthcawl Comprehensive School. Now they have moved to the ‘Hope Chapel’ building in Nottage where a small declining congregation has been absorbed into a thriving Christian community of up to and beyond 100 people. The chapel building has been renovated and the future is looking very bright indeed. If you live in Nottage why don’t you drop in and check out at their 10.30am Sunday Worship, or one of their weekday activities. Jesus said “I will build my church” (Matthew’s gospel chapter 16, verse 18). Could it be that those churches that have got stuck in a rut of tradition, or watered down the message of Jesus, are the reason for so much church decline in Wales? Those churches who are faithful to the bible and open to the Holy Spirit seem to be doing very well. Rev. Martin Gillard

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE We have been busy refurbishing tools for kits to send to Africa. Sometimes we do not have all the tools required. If you have any sash cramp ends or ball joint splitters that you no longer require we would like to hear from you. We send tools in wooden crates 1000mm long x 350mm square. For these we need 15mm thick plywood so if you have any unwanted pieces please contact the number below. If you have any unwanted tools we can collect them from you. The kits of tools are sent to Africa and used by local people to earn a living. The charity also provides training in business management, finance, planning and health and safety. We have several projects running and these are funded by donations from individuals and charitable groups like the Rotary Club and Inner wheel. Not all tools collected or donated are suitable or required for kits. These tools and other items are sold to raise funds for the transportation of kits to Africa. We have sales in Porthcawl, at the Bridgend Show, and also the Classic Car Show on 6th August. If you would like to help this very good cause please contact the number below. FEATURES Y CEFN GWYRDD Poems and Pints at Cefn Junction Signal Box was a great success last month. The good turn out was enhanced by a beautiful summer’s evening and a willingness by those present to contribute a song, poem or story. Ukulele, guitar, penny whistle, harp and voice all ‘played’ a part in ensuring success, but the highlight was probably Shaun and Marc’s impromptu jazz number - a good night. The Gwyrdd has been disappointed by the fact that due to cut backs Cefn Ironworks is at present closed to the public. This small iron works, owned by the council but overseen by Cadw, is the best example of a small ironworks [c1770] in Britain, and was the reason for the Gwyrdd’s formation in 1993 when it was in danger of collapse. Hopefully a package can be put in place to ensure that we can all visit this fine example of Cefn’s heritage. If you are interested in visiting Cefn Junction Signal Box it will be open to the public every weekend in August from 2-5pm. On Saturday 6th August cream teas will be served - an opportunity to relax before visiting the Box. John Mason masoncj4@hotmail.com

PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS Sheila Burge became our new President at the Handover Tea held in the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club recently. Sheila had served as secretary of our Club for many years. We wish her a happy and successful year as President. At this meeting Mary Emment-Lewis gave a report and slideshow of the Glasgow Conference which she attended in April. As our President Mary attended the Civic Tea. Mary has represented our Club on numerous occasions. The time and energy she has put into the Club during her year of office, often at difficult times, is much appreciated and we wish her well in the future. President Sheila and Secretary Carol attended the Rotary Handover at the Atlantic Hotel in July. Looking towards the future President Sheila is arranging a visit to the Royal Mint in September. There will be no meeting of the Club in August but an afternoon tea will be held at Elizabeth Jones’ house on Tuesday 2nd August. A Bring and Buy Stall and a raffle are planned for that event. LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS

At the end of June Porthcawl Lions and partners gathered at the Hi-Tide for their annual handover dinner at which past president, Lion Rhys Lewis, handed over the chain of office to new president - Lion Don Tickner. Don, a very active and popular octogenarian, is no stranger to the post, having been president in the past. He is one of the two original members of the club still serving after more than thirty years and has in that time held various offices, including that of membership officer. After receiving his chain and the charter, Don thanked Lion Rhys for all his hard work and commitment at all times, but especially during his year as president and presented him with a token of the club’s appreciation. Be sure not to miss the Vintage Fair & Classic Car Show at Porthcawl Rugby Club on Saturday 6th August, where there will be around 150 cars plus lots of stalls, games and entertainment, and of course refreshments. It promises to be a good day out for all the family and entry is free, although donations will be gratefully accepted. All proceeds will go to charities supported by Porthcawl Lions. Meanwhile keep up with all Porthcawl Lions news and events on their website porthcawllions.org.uk John Cosson

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PORTHCAWL WI

NEWTON WI

Recently, we had a successful and interesting Annual Meeting. We welcomed everyone present and our guest speaker, Jane Exel, gave a very interesting talk. At our June meeting we were astounded by the unusual and beautiful brooches designed and made by Christine Thomas. It took patience and skill to make this particular jewellery - what a clever lady. Also in June a few of our WI visited Highgrove. In our July meeting we practiced a little Indian massage – hopefully to tap into our 7 chakras, and reflexology – to relieve tension and treat illness. In August we will enjoy our summer afternoon tea – with a 50’s theme, and a talk by Novello Peters on the AC.WW, which is supported by the WI movement. As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 713124.

Our President Jennifer Davies, welcomed all members to the July Meeting. The speakers for the evening were: Claire Harris and David Hall, who spoke about the ‘Shaw Trust’, which was started in 1982. It is an organisation which helps disadvantaged people to establish independence. This was a very interesting and informative talk. On June 15th we celebrated our Summer Tea, the Queens Birthday plus four members 80th birthdays. The competition for the afternoon was ‘Crowns or Coronets’, the judge was a special guest Anne Green, who was visiting from Dallas, Texas. The winner was Anita Jeffrey, with runners up Helen Deakes and Tina Hoskins. They were each presented with bouquets. Anita also received a winners sash to mark her ‘Queen of the Afternoon’ and sat upon a special throne provided for the occasion (a fab afternoon). Our trip to Llanelly House, took place on June 29th. Retail Therapy first at Trostre Shopping Centre, followed by a grand tour of the house, which was extremely interesting, with a delicious tea to complete our visit. No meeting in August. R Freeman

LALESTON WI Our 7th July meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed everyone. The minutes of our previous meeting were read and agreed. All members that attended the Mid-Summer Dinner and Musical Evening on 28th June, at The Orangery, Margam, agreed it was a superb evening. Trips to Tyntesfield House and Picton Castle in August are eagerly anticipated. Our guest speaker Deborah John with her monologue ‘The Edwardian Maid’ gave us all an amusing insight into ‘the big house’. We look forward to her next installment. Vote of thanks given by Ann Rees. Laleston WI will be holding an ‘Afternoon Tea’ in Blandy Hall, 2-4pm on 6th August. Raffle and tombola. Please come along and join us. Entry by ticket, please contact number below for further details. There will be no Luncheon Club or Book Club during the August break. The evening’s raffle was won by Betty Rastin and the competition by Betty Hart. Our next meeting will be held on 1st September at 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club) and we will be holding a ‘Harvest Auction’. New members are always welcome, why not come and join us. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie

28,000 COPIES EVERY MONTH

COYCHURCH WI The president Sandra Davidson welcomed everyone, and secretary Sue Elworthy read the minutes of last month’s meeting. The business of the meeting included: * A quiz team will be entered for the GFWI Quiz Night on 13/09/16. * As Link hosts for 2016-2017, the Christmas Carol Service will be held in St. Crallo’s Church. * Suggestions and ideas requested to be put forward for our 100th anniversary celebrations in 2018. * It was agreed to support the Christmas Tree Festival to be held in Margam Park Orangery on 30/11/16. * Tickets for the charity evening on 21/09/16 in aid of the local branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society are available priced £10pp to include a two-course meal with entertainment by ‘Red Addiction’. Everyone welcome. We were then entertained by our guest speaker - Esme Woods, as she read and relayed various amusing tales, poems and ditties. Truly an enjoyable evening as laughter filled the hall. For further details on events please contact Sandra Davidson on 01656 669232. We do not hold a meeting in August and resume on 6th September when guests and prospective new members are very welcome to come along. Janet James

LIVING WITH YOUR PARTNER, WHAT ARE YOU RIGHTS

CHILD MAINTENANCE FOR CHILDREN IN HIGHER EDUCATION It is common for parents to apply for child maintenance from their former partner while the child is still in school. However, many people do not realise that it is possible to apply for maintenance payments to help support children in higher education. This will be welcome news to parents especially given the high level of tuition fees that students currently face. The combination of a rise in the number of children going on to university and increases in tuition fees has led a growing number of parents to explore what extra money might be available and so solicitors are seeing an increase in enquiries in this area. In most cases where a parent receives maintenance though the Child Maintenance Service, payments will end when the child finishes secondary education. However, it is possible to enter into an agreement with your former partner that maintenance is paid beyond your child leaving secondary school. Also, courts have powers to extend maintenance to the end of the child’s university degree or vocational training course. This will mean you making an application to the Court under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989. When deciding whether to extend the term of child maintenance, the courts place particular focus on a child’s financial needs, the non-resident parent’s ability to pay and the manner in which the child is expected to be educated or trained. Regardless of the availability of student loans, courts may order that maintenance should be extended if a child genuinely needs financial support and the parent concerned has the means to provide it. If you wish to discuss any of the issues set out above, then please arrange an appointment with a member of our team of experts.

Living together as a couple (also called cohabiting) does not give you the same rights and responsibilities as being married or in a registered civil partnership. Cohabitation does not automatically give you rights to the home you share. 1. If the property is rented, only the tenant(s) named in the rental agreement has the ‘right’ to live there. 2. If the property is owned by one of you, only the property owner is entitled to live there. However, even where only one of you owns the property, the other may have some rights. This can happen if: 1. The owner has agreed in writing that the non-owner is entitled to a share of the home 2. The non-owner contributes financially or has acted to their own detriment (eg: giving up a job) on the understanding that this entitles him or her to a share To help protect the cohabitation rights of both partners, the parties should consider purchasing the property in joint names, but you cannot force your partner to sell the home if you decide to leave, even if you contributed most of the costs of buying the home, you would normally only be entitled to a half share unless you have agreed otherwise or if your partner walks out on you, you are likely to be liable for the full amount of any mortgage payments. Upon death, an unmarried cohabitant has no automatic right to inherit if their partner dies, although they may be a beneficiary under the other’s will. If you have lived together ‘as man and wife’ for at least two years or if you can show that you were financially dependent on your partner, you can make a claim for a financial settlement even if you were not a beneficiary of the will. If you owned your home together, the form of legal ownership has a major impact. To help you we would suggest: 1. Drawing up a cohabitation agreement, so you have clear arrangements covering ownership of the home and what rights each of you have to live there 2. Appointing each other to hold a lasting power of attorney (so that if one of you is no longer capable, the other can take decisions on his or her behalf) 3. Reviewing your wills and ensuring that you have each made appropriate provision for the other

Peter Alan - Porthcawl 01656 771600 porthcawl@peteralan.co.uk www.peteralan.co.uk

The Big Two – your biggest shop window Christine Armsby, Peter Alan’s Porthcawl Branch Manager offers her advice on how to advertise your property effectively in order to attract a suitable buyer… “The first question you need to ask your estate agent is ‘Where will my property be seen?’ With 95% of buyers starting their property search on the internet (YouGov, Jan 2014) it is vital for your property to have the maximum online exposure possible. At Peter Alan we understand the importance of online marketing and therefore we’ll put your property on the Big Two property websites, both Rightmove and Zoopla, and that also includes PrimeLocation. The reason for this is that research showed that a large percentage of buyers visit just one of these two sites. In total 31% of buyers searching for property online didn’t actually visit Rightmove and another 36% didn’t visit Zoopla at all. So, if your property is only being promoted on one of these sites, you could miss out on up to a third of buyers looking online. Plus, we’ll promote your property on our own well-visited website www.peteralan.co.uk. As well as our online marketing we also advertise our properties in branch and in the local newspaper. Secondly, it is proven that homes that are well staged sell quickly and often achieve a higher asking price. For this reason it is important that your property has good quality photographs. Ensuring that your home is presented in the best possible way before the estate agent takes photos of your property will give buyers a better first impression of your home and encourage them to book a viewing, which can often result in a sale. At Peter Alan we offer professional, enhanced photographs; a floorplan and an audio tour, all helping to give buyers a clearer picture of a property.”

Please call Peter Alan Porthcawl today on 01656 771600 for further information on how we can help maximise the exposure of your property or to arrange a free market appraisal.

Finance ESTATE PLANNING – WHY IT’S SO CRUCIAL When someone passes away, it can be a horrendously stressful time for the family left behind, simply due to the loss. Dealing with various bodies, banks, lenders, insurance companies, medical practitioners, the Probate Office, utility companies, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, etc., etc., can really take, not only a great deal of time but also a toll on your own personal reserves of strength and resources. Just to make things worse, there lurks in the background an almighty possible problem regarding administration of the deceased’s estate, where there are several diverse assets and in particular where the deceased had been previously married or had children from a previous relationship. There have also been many cases where insufficient detail was paid to the writing of a Will and that can cause an estate to effectively be frozen until such problems are ironed out legally. We have recently seen a Will where insufficient Trustees were named and the Will not properly signed. Also, where business, agricultural and property interests have not been fully provided for, this can cause enormous problems that can take many months, often years to sort out. To assist our clients, from all walks of life and financial positions, we have teamed up with one of the UK’s foremost, if not THE foremost Estate Administration specialists, whereby we take your enquiry, gather all the initially required information and put you firmly in the hands of a major specialist in this line of work. If you need a brain operation, that is carried out by a specialist brain surgeon – not a GP – and that is no different to requiring the specialist skills of a highly qualified Estate Practitioner when it comes to Estate administration. No matter the size of your likely estate or its value, you should have a chat with us. Don’t leave your loved ones the added complications when some sensible planning, suitably bespoke to you, can take care of matters. Call on 01656 782545 for an initial discussion and we can guide you to the RIGHT people to take of your needs and most importantly, your Family and affairs.

protected. Although equity markets suffered, government debt benefitted from a flight to quality. In addition, the weakened sterling of course strengthened the position of assets held outside the UK, highlighting the importance of diversification not only across asset classes but also geographical regions. The important thing through this turbulent time is that investments are managed. This is done so on a daily basis at Bartholomew Hawkins. We would like to propose running a Summer Seminar for the residents of Porthcawl and Bridgend. If we are able to get a head count of 10 -15 individuals then we will organise an Investment Seminar towards the end of August, where you not only can benefit from some insight into the market place, but ask questions of investment experts. Simply give us a call registering your interest and once we have sufficient interest we will arrange the time and venue. In the meantime if you are concerned with your investments then please do not hesitate to call. Ian Davies Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 01656 347000

BREXIT – ADVICE FROM BARTHOLEMEW HAWKINS As we woke on the morning of the 24th June our country had taken the unprecedented step of voting to leave the European Union. After weeks of campaigning the ‘Leave’ campaign won – and we now face the prospect of moving into what can only be described as the unknown. It goes without saying that moving into the unknown brings with it a great degree of uncertainty. Many people would suggest that they can predict what is going to happen, the truth of course is that no one can predict with any degree of certainty how things will pan out over the coming months and indeed years. Fortunately, we as a firm are pretty much on the front foot, and having discretionary powers allows us to take steps most other firms are simply not authorised or permitted to do. Prior to the referendum we took steps within our portfolios to ensure that should a ‘Brexit’ occur, portfolios would be more Seaside News | 40

SUDOKU - HOW I TRIUMPHED OVER THE PUZZLE SETTERS! I tried for some time to complete puzzles that I found in newspapers and magazines. Page 2/2 Soon I could complete “Easy” puzzles, but that is Page 1/2 when my problems began! I looked for books and on the internet, but all I found were complicated ideas with long names which I did not understand. What I wanted was a simple system which would help me solve printed “difficult” or even harder Sudoku puzzles, but would let ME do all the solving, not a computer. Eventually, at www.EasyHelpSolvingSudoku.com I found it - a simple system so good that it assists in solving any printed Sudoku puzzle, however difficult. It even showed it was not necessary to go back to the beginning of the puzzle if I made an error! None of the pleasure, satisfaction and sense of achievement is lost by using the system as I still have to work out the puzzle! It met all of my requirements! I now always use this system, knowing that, with care and accuracy, the system will help me solve any printed Sudoku puzzle, however difficult. I recommend it to all Sudoku puzzlers. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB Most things are looking good in the garden. Rhubarb and custard is a favourite along with rhubarb and raspberry crumble, no prizes for guessing what is growing well in our small patch. It is an ongoing battle with the enemy - slugs and snails for starters! They hide away in the day, and then come out at night to feast on plant foliage. Pellets are a common method of control or sunken pots of beer. Aphids love to find fresh new growth and can quickly infest individual plants or whole planting areas. You can make up a garlic spray or use one of the many commercial sprays that are available - they don’t like garlic or washing up liquid. As I mentioned in last month’s article preparations are well in hand for our 46th Annual Horticultural Show and Barbeque. To be held on Saturday 3rd September. Open to the public from 2pm after the judging of the exhibits. A comprehensive show schedule is available just call in at Cliff Cottage on a Thursday or Saturday morning. Membership can be renewed on the afternoon of the show. Refreshments will be available, there will be lots to view and enjoy. Gwen Bradford

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB August, the traditional time people take their holidays! If you’re one of these lucky people move all your containers together in the shade, this will save them drying too quickly (give them a good feed too) this will benefit the plants and make it easier for the person watering them. Also cut the lawn before you go – it will grow like crazy while you’re away if the weather is wet and warm (it may be pushing neighbourly relations too far to expect it cut in your absence!) At home August brings the opportunity to relax and enjoy your garden, Keep a lookout for ladybirds as well as being pretty they are a great help to gardeners, if you find one, pop it in your greenhouse of on your roses, it will make itself at home in no time and hungrily devout any pests that arrive. If your cutting Chrysanths and Dahlias, for the table, remember the earwigs love them one might drop into your dinner (still not as bad as a slug)! Did you know – potatoes were the first food to be grown in space? In 1996 plants were taken into space by the shuttle Columbia! Chris Early

BIRD WATCH: LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL Over the past forty years Lesser Blackbacked Gulls have moved into our urban environment, tempted inland by our discarded food and rubbish. Traditionally a summer visitor, increasing numbers now remain in the UK during winter. The Lesser Blackbacked Gull is slightly smaller than the more familiar Herring Gull. The back and wings are a charcoal grey, the legs and bill are yellow. The bill has a red spot to help direct chicks to food. This is a smart looking gull and one of my favourites. Persecution in the 19th century led to population declines. Whilst their range and numbers later increased, this expansion has now stopped, which has resulted in the species being put on the Amber List. 40% of the European population is in the UK, over half of which are at fewer than ten sites. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOSSING Your dental health is an important component of your physical health. It’s a frequently under appreciated aspect that can have a profound systemic influence. In fact, thousands of studies have linked oral disease to systemic disease. Your mouth is like a window to your health; the soft tissues and your teeth reflect what’s going on in the rest of your body. Inflammation is well-known as a “ravaging” and disease-causing force, and gum disease and other oral diseases produce chronic low-grade inflammation. When the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease enter into your circulatory system, it causes your liver to release C-reactive proteins, which have inflammatory effects on your entire circulatory system. Flossing is perhaps even more important than brushing because it removes bacteria that are the precursors of plaque, which if left to fester will turn into tartar that cannot be removed by regular brushing or flossing. FUNGAL PREVENTION If general, if foot hygiene is not observed conditions such as fungal nail infection and athlete’s foot can develop. Understandably, it is most common for people to act upon these conditions within the summer months, however the prevention and management of conditions such as those mentioned below should be considered all year round. Prevention: * keep your feet clean and dry * clip your nails to keep them short * avoid walking barefoot in public pools/showers * replace old footwear that could be contaminated with fungi * treat athlete’s foot as soon as possible to avoid the infection spreading to your nails Symptoms: Fungal Nail Infection Athlete’s Foot The nail may appear: * discoloured * thickened – often nails are difficult to cut, as they can become an unusual shape or exture * brittle or crumbly– pieces may break off and come away completely Skin may appear: * dry and red * scaly and flaky * itchy * sore * macerated between the toes (due to excessive moisture) * covered in small blisters Treatments: * Antifungal treatments are available from your pharmacist or GP * Contact your foot health professional for further advice and a treatment plan Lee Giles First Choice Footcare Tel: 07815 848339

Arts WYNNE EVANS

ART IN FOCUS

Porthcawl Male Choir are proud to present this year at their annual concert Mr Wynne Evans. Wynne is regularly singing to millions for the TV advertising campaign that has made him a household name as the spoof opera star Gio Compario (Go Compare). His debut album A Song in My Heart went to Number 1 in the classical charts. Wynne is one of the UK’s most exciting tenors. He is a regular presenter on BBC Radio Wales and Classic FM, and presented a BBC2 TV programme on the National Eisteddfod. Most recently he sang the role of PIANGI in the 25th anniversary performance of The Phantom of the Opera, which was broadcast live from the Royal Albert Hall to cinemas worldwide, and also been released on DVD. Wynne Evans’ operatic appearances have taken him to major opera houses in the UK and abroad. The choir will also perform a varied programme of popular songs ‘From the Musicals’. It promises to be another wonderful night to remember this year. For the opportunity to see Wynne at The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl please contact choir members to reserve your tickets. Tickets are also available from The Grand Pavilion. Mal Evans Public Relations Officer

This month the focus is on a single exhibit ‘The Attraction of Onlookers: Aberfan-An Anatomy of a Welsh Village’. This is a thought provoking installation by Shimon Attie who had stayed in the community for some time in 2006. Aberfan has become known as the village that had suffered a huge loss of lives in the disaster that happened on 21st October 1966: 28 adults and 116 children were crushed in a terrible tragedy when the colliery waste tip slid down the hillside and engulfed Pantglas Junior School. Attie found a community who had become entrapped by this tragedy and its memory, but had a desire to move on. ‘The Attraction of Onlookers’ is a five channel video installation that seeks to give back the community a sense of anonymity. Attie videos the community as separate entities devoid of context rotating in still motion like statues whilst beautiful music full of tranquillity fills the space. Each person looks graceful and sculpted with a sense that they are individuals who could be from anywhere experiencing a life that is theirs and theirs to own. On show till 4th September. My heroes of the cinema were the newsreel cameramen, who brought real-life adventure and excitement to the big screen through the turbulent years of the twentieth century, providing short news items from home and abroad, giving their audiences a glimpse of the world that we take so much for granted with today’s 24-hour television news coverage. It was a tough life, with half a dozen independent newsreel companies competing with each other for the top news and sports stories of the day (except during the Second World

Arts War, when they shared their resources) and they used heavy unwieldy equipment and shot the scenes on 35mm film, which had to be rushed to a processing laboratory before it could be edited, narrative and music added, and then released to cinemas around the country for viewing. Their cameras were like the one illustrated, and their sound recording systems were equally voluminous. How they got the results they did is frankly amazing. Television eventually brought about their demise, and TV news equipment became more portable, with 16mm cameras, and then electronic cameras, so that now the digital gear can be carried easily in one hand. But the technique of covering a story remains much the same, and next month I shall look at it in more detail. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 07510 934299 Photo: Wall newsreel camera

Saturday 6th August

OUR LADY STAR OF THE SEA SUMMER FETE, PORTHCAWL At our church hall in New Road, Porthcawl, from 10.30am onwards. Come and enjoy coffee and cake or a curry and chips lunch. Stalls include a raffle, jewellery, books, home made cards, cakes, bric a brac and toys. Why not have a go too on a potter’s wheel! Everyone welcome. Saturday 13th August

NEWTON INSTITUTE SUMMER FAYRE, PORTHCAWL

Saturday 3rd – Sunday 4th September

PORTHCAWL TRUCK GATHERING At Salt Lake Car Park, Porthcawl. We held our 1st one last year and, with short notice, we only had 50 trucks and collected £1,400, which went to Ty Hafen. This year will be a lot bigger and better with old and new trucks from all over the UK. It’s a static event, so families can look at shinny trucks, hear the roar of a V8 Scania or have thier child’s photos taken. There’s room for traders if anyone has something to offer? But not food related sorry. Anyone interested contact: grahamsmiler@hotmail.co.uk Mobile: 07787 336863

Starts 2pm. Lots for everyone - raffle, tombola, cake stall, bric-abrac, books, toys, clothes and lots more. Admission 50p includes tea/coffee.

POEMS THE LIGHT WAY

At the beach, Sitting on the rocks, Closing my eyes, Smelling the sea, Hearing it, Wind is helping it, To come to me. First it’s touching my face, Then to my soul, Feeling the sun on my face, It’s so warm, Then I’m opening my eyes, Sun had lightened up, Clouds put the colour around, Grey sea now became a blue sea, The light way in front of me, It is so inviting, I want to jump into the sea, Swim as far as I can, Want to see the end But I also know that There is no end! Ayse Arthur Rest Bay, Porthcawl

A DREAM

I dreamed a dream of a world out there A world full of love and trust for all to share, With lush green lands with beauty galore With tropical seas lapping a warm sandy shore, Seagulls in flight above a crystal blue sea Palm trees swaying in a warm gentle breeze, The people are happy with love in their hearts A welcome to their homes with arms wide apart, There are no wars no famine or drought There is no death or danger to think about, People love and live in the land of their birth They think this land is heaven on earth, People are happy and don’t drift away I call out aloud and tell them to stay, I open my eyes with my world torn apart I try my very best for my dream to restart, The reality of my dream was so peaceful A world of my dream would be so wonderful, I lay awake as my dream fades away My dream could be real on some far distant day Basil Walters Cefn Glas, Bridgend

CARRYING THE BATON

Feel the heartbeat of the Father As he cries, ‘Oh who will go?’ Share the passion of Christ’s answer ‘Send me Father. Be it so, Though men deny and crucify Through my death they life might know Men of old took up the baton Joyful ran with God’s strong word Life and joy and peace in Jesus Sin’s forgiveness through our Lord Ran the race with jubilation Living, dying for our God A century has come and gone Since first we felt the Spirit’s fire Who now dares to feel God’s heart-beat To grasp this baton, know his power, Yes, we’ll run with joy and purpose Know God’s word for this his hour Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

PRETERM BABY

I am a preterm baby, born too soon, With Christmas crackers instead of March bloom, I am warm and cosy in my plastic dome, an incubator my temporary home. My Mum gets so worried cos’ I can’t suckle milk, but my Aunty nurses say, Don’t push him to quick. A tube up my nostril, through which I feed, then a big cuddle is all I need. I went a bit yellow, Gave Mum such a fright, but the nurses just cured that with a bright light. So parents don’t worry if babies are small, we really are quite tough, though not very tall. Dry Mummy’s tears, smooth out her frown, Before very long, I’ll be getting her down. Please smile at me sweetly through my plastic dome, decorate the nursery I’m on my way HO ME. MP Carter-Clare, Porthcawl

NEWTON, TOM SAWYER AND A PINE TREE

High up in a cherry tree, who else would climb but little old me. I clutch the trunk with both hands and look abroad to foreign lands. My wife, Heather calls up to me and shatters my dream, by saying “Don’t be silly, it’s Minehead about 4 miles from Bream”. Devastated by this news that this wasn’t abroad, I turn and look towards Ogmore way, and this sight truly uplifts me, as I witness egrets and herons in Ogmore estuary play. I feel like Robinson Crusoe looking for ships, but again Heather breaks my illusion by asking, “Al rolls ready what flavour crisps?” This area is deemed as an area of scientific research, along with Merthyr Mawr thatched cottages and sleepy hamlet church. Flora and Fauna reside here and both rare. And even Hollywood made a film about a sandpiper who befriends a piebald mare. I’ve seen pink parrots, flamingos, black orchids in this area! And once or twice think I suffered a form of malaria! In the distance I see and smell the aroma of a mint field where we plan to picnic, though this time hide our sardine rolls as a seagull swooped and three he nicked. Our itinerary as follows as always be, sun bleached check blanket with shiny creaking wicker basket, and perhaps the odd maverick bee! This child Tom Sawyer and Huck fin adventure we’ll plan soon, there we’ll eat and drink Earl Grey, yes light stirred with a plastic white spoon! Dessert being the humble fig roll, while witty banter will flow on Newton beach under the moon. Alun Davies, Porthcawl

P&K AND THE R&A

YOUNGSTERS CALL FOR FAIR FOOTBALL!

The R&A Amateur Championship is ranked the second most prestigious event for the finest golfers in the world. Pyle and Kenfig were pleased to jointly host the first two days of this year’s event with our neighbours Royal Porthcawl. This is the third occasion that the two courses have jointly hosted the event. A measure of the significance of the Championship can be learned by looking back at previous winners and competitors. The list is like a roll-call of the current professional tour with Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia foremost in the list of winners. Also amongst the competitors the last time the two clubs hosted the event included the Molinari brothers from Italy, our own Jamie Donaldson and a host of current tour players. Following the Amateur, the club hosted the Welsh Schools Championship and our local member Tom Peet was the winner of the South Wales division with scores of 73 and 82. Following the event Tom was also selected as first reserve for the Welsh Schools Team to play England, despite him still only being 14 years of age. On the weekend, The Dennis Phillips Cup was played in very windy conditions. Our local Karaoke King prevailed, congratulations to Dr. Kim Mohajer who mastered the conditions and returned a net score of 71, runner up was Jeff Lugg with a nett score of 72, the same as Ian Booth and Russ Adams. The Beautiful Game is only beautiful if there’s fair play all round. Jack Jones age 7, Samuel Johnson age 3 Lily Jones age 4, and Oliver Johnson age 7, celebrate Welsh Euro success with a fair trade football! Football is the world’s most popular game, it unites people around the world. Yet almost half of the world’s footballs are hand-stitched in Sialkot, Pakistan. Around 40,000 people work in Sialkot’s football making industry, producing tens of millions of footballs annually for multinational companies such as Adidas – providers of the Euro 2016’s official footballs. Whilst making footballs drives the economy of Sialkot, the industry has a history of poor working conditions and low pay. Pakistan’s football makers are forgotten across the supply chain, living in poverty. 70% of the world’s footballs are made in Sialkot. Annually 40 million balls produced, with 60 million in a world cup year. In a sport where top players earn millions annually, there is a responsibility to protect workers receiving low pay. Bala Sport is a UK company that produces Fairtrade Footballs (http://www.balasport.co.uk/) Fairtrade guarantees that workers are paid a fair wage, benefit from fair working conditions. A Fairtrade premium is used for projects that include free healthcare. Let’s all help bounce fair footballs into the mainstream. Margaret Minhinnick

SUCCESS FOR PORTHCAWL KARATE Deadline date for the September issue is: Monday 15th August

PORTHCAWL TRADITIONS The Christmas Morning Swim is 52 years old, and the Lions Boxing Day run holds its 35th ‘running’ this year. Not quite as old as these, but not far off it the Round The Bay Swim, which has been held by Porthcawl Lifeguards since 1983, and this year takes place on Sunday 14th August. The tide is kind to us this year, which means we have a 4pm start, with registration on the day from 3 -3.45pm. As always, there is the option of the short or long course. The Short course is around 750 metres, and consists of a swim from the beach across to the slipway. - You will need to walk back though! The long course is around 1500 metres, and is a out and back route. Entry costs are £15 for short, and £20 for long course, and all profits from this event are ploughed back into the Club to ensure its long-term survival. It’s a great challenge and is open to all those over 14, so if you fancy ‘doing the bay’, what better opportunity than in a fully marshaled environment. For further details go to www. porthcawlifeguards.co.uk or email: secplgc@hotmail.com Phil Protheroe Seaside News | 56
