KARAVAN 4 THE KIDZ II - UPDATE
Raised so far - £6,800
Dear Editor, GET £30,000 We have just embarked on Karavan TAR 4 The Kidz II and would love the local community to get involved with fundraising. For those who are unaware - in 2013 a group of friends got together, raised £25,000 and purchased Emyr’s Karavan4thekidz. The caravan was then given to Latch, the Welsh Childrens Cancer Charity - the idea being that the caravan was used by children suffering from cancer and their families. The caravan is in constant use and proved to be a massive success to the point where the charity would love to own a second caravan to be able to offer even more children and their families this crucial respite. The target is to raise £30,000 this time so any help would be gratefully appreciated, whether you would like to organise a quiz, coffee morning, sponsored Christmas morning swim, or even ask your employers if they have a designated charity? Any donations can be made through Just Giving Karavan 4 The Kidz , or contact us through our Karavan 4 The Kidz Facebook page or Emyr Owen branch of Latch page , here you’ll find more information about Latch and a list of different fundraising dates so you can get involved . Last month we held a very successful quiz at The Prince of Wales in Kenfig thanks for their generosity, quiz master Simon Turton for his efforts and everyone who supported the night. Thanks to everyone who donated after the Cardiff half marathon especially, Pete and Shelly Edwards and Rhian Power - amazing efforts all round! Continued support from the Swan through the sponsorship of the parachute jump and they are also running a Sunday quiz from November 29th @ 7pm. We would love the local community to continually embrace this project and see what we can achieve together - we have been fortunate to have had some large donations, but please do not worry if you cannot raise too much; if everyone who read the Seaside News, donated even a pound; we’d have a caravan! Many thanks again for everyone’s help. Karavan 4 The Kidz

TREES OF CHRISTMAS PAST Dear Editor, Trees of Christmas past. Anthony Callaghan Porthcawl
CLOSURE OF TOILETS I am writing to draw attention to any persons planning to walk along the coastal path to Rest Bay, be warned. The council has closed the toilets. As a town that relies on tourism all year round it seems strange to remove such an essential facility. The next nearest toilets are (were) on the seafront below the Grand Pavilion. I recently walked from Rest Bay to the seafront planning to use the facilities only to find that these toilets too are closed. When the council wastes so much money on non-essential things how can they justify these closures. The car park at Rest Bay has several signs directing visitors to “toilets behind café”. Shouldn’t these signs be removed or covered up, as it’s very misleading? I usually visit Porthcawl several times a week to walk my dog and almost always need to use the toilet, I shan’t be visiting much at all now, I find this most inconvenient as the Winter is when all the beaches can be used for dog walking. I’m sure I’m not alone. J Jones Brackla

Letters PHOTOS FROM REST BAY Dear Editor, I have sent you some photos, which I took a couple of weeks ago. Please feel free to use any of them. I’m a keen photographer (hobby) and love Rest Bay and indeed our area in general. Many thanks, we really enjoy the Seaside News. Mike Doyle Bridgend
Have your say - email info@seasidenews.co.uk
It is ironic that when the amalgamation of the councils took place in 1974, Porthcawl had the option of joining either Ogwr/BCBC or Port Talbot and it was perhaps unfortunate that we did not choose Port Talbot as has been proved over the last 40 years. Whichever direction Porthcawl now takes, it is of paramount importance that Porthcawl creates its own future and that the town can be a place of hope and prosperity. John Jenkins Porthcawl
THANKS FOR THE POEM Dear Editor, I would just like to say that sadly my dear mum and friend passed away in August this year. My mum wanted her ashes scattered at sea and at this awful time I saw a poem in the Seaside News written by Lesley Victor. It was titled ‘She is Gone’. I couldn’t quite believe it when I read it as it was so apt at this sad time. I am still reading it on a regular basis due to its kind and thoughtful words of wisdom! I would like to thank Lesley Victor for such a positive and thought provoking poem. Heather Dobbs Brackla
PORTHCAWL NEW BOUNDARY Dear Editor, The main topic at the moment is in connection with the Welsh Government’s proposal to reduce the number of County Borough Councils by half. For this area the options would be to merge with: – Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taff and BCBC; – Port Talbot, Neath and probably Swansea; – Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Porthcawl is in the unique position of being situated on the edge of these three proposed new authorities. The reason I mention this is to highlight the fact that Ewenny, Ogmore, St Bride’s and Southerndown were in a similar position on the edge of Ogwr/ BCBC and the Vale of Glamorgan and in 1996 the Boundary Commission, in conjunction with the Welsh Government, transferred them from Ogwr/BCBC to the Vale of Glamorgan’s jurisdiction. It is feasible that Porthcawl could receive similar treatment and could present a strong case for a transfer to a different authority independently of Bridgend CBC. As a seaside resort it would be appropriate to transfer to Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan so that Porthcawl links up with other coastal areas – Ogmore, Llantwit Major, Cardiff Bay, Penarth and Barry. However from an NHS perspective it would be important and essential to join Port Talbot.

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
AFON Y FELIN NEWS
The youth of today are so often maligned and criticised and seldom given the praise that they deserve. At PCS however, I am delighted to report that following an exhaustive five days of commitment, enthusiasm and energy on the part of our students, the Head Team raised in excess of £4000 during Charities’ Week. As each day went by, the fundraising gathered momentum with the keenly anticipated fancy dress day on Friday 13h November again being the pinnacle of the week. As well as the old favourites like I’m a Teacher…Get me out of here! Sponge the Teacher and Womanless Miss World, pupils introduced the Great British Bake Off and the Lip Synch Battle – all performed to packed out audiences of delighted pupils. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our pupils and staff for contributing so wholeheartedly to this campaign and congratulate our extraordinary young people on raising this impressive amount of money for charity. Chosen charities this year include the Kenya Project, the Teenage Cancer Trust, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Links with the local community will be further enhanced with contributions
As part of the literacy scheme “All Skilled Up”, The Oaks visited Cardiff City Stadium, they were given a behind the scenes tour, before composing poems. A very exciting highlight was a knife juggler! So far the total raised in our Football First fundraiser is £980, some children kicked penalties at a speed in excess of 35 miles per hour, impressive! The Oaks hosted our annual Harvest Festival celebration, the theme was gardening and growing crops. All the children had worked hard, they can be very proud of themselves! Tidy Ted and Eco Eli brought their road show to school, a very entertaining way to learn about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The entire school dressed up as superheroes to raise funds for the school, thanks to all the parents for their help. The P.F.A. held discos before half term, there were some scary characters dancing and socialising. PC Steve taught The Cedars about Stranger Danger, very important. Our Willows visited Tesco, and The Oaks were invited to The Mayor’s Chambers, following his recent visit to Afon y Felin because of our wonderful Inspection Report. Years 5 & 6 have been studying The Blitz, and dressed as in the Ian John 1940s on Armistice Day. AJ Pritchard

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS
Christmas is coming and we are busy trying to fit everything in before the holidays are here. The Book Fair has been and gone and was a great success. Many pupils came to school dressed as their favourite book character and went home with their very own published ‘We are Writers book’. Thank you to all the pupils and staff for all their hard work and all the families for supporting the book fair. We are now in the middle of rehearsals for our Christmas productions. Our Foundation Phase will be performing Penguin Pete on the 15th and 16th of December in the school hall and Key Stage 2 will be performing a Carol concert at Gilgal Church at 6 o clock on December the 16th. On top of that we also have our visit to the pantomime - which is always a great day out. We are also working towards our Eco platinum flag so this year our entry for the Rotary Club Christmas tree festival is an Eco tree. We have put old socks to good use and made them into incredible decorations. The tree will be on display in early December so keep an eye out for it! Andrew Wood
PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL In Class 3 we have been learning all about Roman life and how they got more land from battle. We have researched facts from the internet and books, and then written about their clothes, food, schools, homes, slaves and freedom. Did you know that Roman girls didn’t go to school and got married at a very young age? Or that for one day a year Roman slaves and their masters swapped places? We have made Roman armour, shields and mosaics. All the class are looking forward to our trip to Swansea Museum and their Roman workshop on 27th November. A Walford Year 3 pupil

YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGER NEWS The school is now enrolling for January 2016. Children who celebrate their third birthday before December 31st, 2015 are eligible for free morning and breakfast club places. If you are interested in Welsh medium education we’re holding a meeting in Cornelly ICC at 5.30 p.m. on November 26th. We’re all very excited that the Gŵyl Cerdd Dant festival came to Porthcawl. It was great for us to welcome thousands of competitors and their families from all over Wales. We thoroughly enjoyed competing in the Gŵyl and doing radio interviews for Radio Cymru and hope everybody enjoyed their time in Porthcawl. We’ve re-started football training at school thanks to Mr Tyrone Vickery and the local PCSOs. We are now looking forward to playing some matches to run alongside our rugby and netball matches. Christmas is coming and preparations have started! Nursery and Reception Classes’ shows will be on December 1st and 2nd, year 1 and 2 shows will be on December 8th and 9th and the juniors Christmas concert will be at Pisgah, Kenfig Hill on December 15th. The choir is also very busy preparing for performances in numerous carol services and concerts around the school’s catchment - Porthcawl, Cefn Cribwr, Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cornelly. Rhiannon Dixon
LOCAL SCHOOLS TO PLAY KEY ROLE IN DEVELOPING NEW WELSH CURRICULUM An innovative new curriculum is being created so that it can be taught in Wales from 2021, and six local schools will be at the heart of its development. Mynydd Cynffig Primary, Pencoed Comprehensive School and Maesteg Comprehensive School will be among those leading on the design of the new curriculum, while Maesteg Comprehensive School will also be looking at teachers’ training requirements and workloads so that they are given all the necessary support. Other local schools pioneering that work will be Oldcastle Primary School, Heronsbridge School and Ysgol Cynwyd Sant. The schools will be working as part of an all-Wales partnership with local authorities, regional consortia, Estyn, leading academics, employers, Welsh Government and other key stakeholders. A significant change in the new curriculum is that the current ‘key stages’ will be removed to try and create a more seamless progression through school. I’m excited to hear that the new curriculum will provide an education that is even more suited to the modern world. For example, ‘digital competence’ will join literacy and numeracy as key elements that teachers will be expected to weave into all lessons across the curriculum, while there’ll also be a greater emphasis on health and wellbeing.

CORNELI PRIMARY NEWS As the autumn term draws to a close we can look back on some enjoyable visits. The choir went and entertained a Senior Citizens group with a selection of songs and a trip to Margam Park Abbey ruins brought Tudor history to life for the children in years five and six. Some of those children also took part in a Cardiff City Football literacy project, which culminated in a visit to the City Stadium where they wrote poetry and toured the ground. However, rugby was their focus at Pencoed College at a tag rugby festival organised by the Ospreys and they were thrilled to have their photograph taken with Welsh player Rhys Webb. Our thanks go to those who so generously donated food items for our Harvest Festival, this was amazing and we were delighted to pass these on to the Food Bank, who were most grateful. We were thinking of others too during our Remembrance Day assembly when we wore our poppies with pride and joined with the national silence for this moving ceremony. We now look forward to our Christmas celebrations and Mr Mills and Staff send all our families good wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Sue Jones

SCHOOLS CHRISTMAS AT ST CLARE’S
CYNFFIG PUPILS SPEAK OUT!
From the smallest in our Nursery to the tallest in our Senior School, the boys and girls at St Clare’s School Porthcawl would like to wish the readers of Seaside News a very Happy Christmas and New Year.
Hello again. We truly value ‘pupil voice’ here at Cynffig and this term pupils have been speaking out! In October pupils exercised their democratic right to vote in our first ever Student Parliament election. Our Student Parliament, led by Year 12 students, gives pupils the opportunity to voice their opinions on school and community life. Parliament members welcomed Wales’ leading try scorer Non Evans to an inspirational training day where she spoke about business success and past accolades including her Commonwealth Games Silver medal. In November it was our boys who voiced their opinions, this time about pedagogy to teachers from all over Central South Consortium. Led by Nic Morrison and Calvin Thomas, our boys’ show- cased how at Cynffig pupils and teachers co -construct lessons together to ensure our pupils are inspired, challenged and succeed. Festive spirit is never far away at Cynffig, and this week our pupils have been busily raising over £250 for Children in Need by sponging teachers, baking cakes and waxing legs. We look forward now to our Christmas Concert on December 10th and extend a warm invitation to you all. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year. Hannah Castle - Head Teacher (01656) 740294
Pupils raised over £1,000 for Children in Need last month with a theme of Heroes and Villains, and some very interesting costumes! Our Sixth Formers organised a whole host of fundraising activities including a cake sale, raffle and a Sixth Form slave auction. It’s already getting busy in the build-up to Christmas! The Friends of St. Clare’s are holding their Annual Christmas Fayre in the Senior Hall from 4:00 – 6:00pm on Friday, 4th December. This is always a wonderful event with many bargains to be snapped up in time for Christmas! Father Christmas will also be there in his magical grotto! Rehearsals are in full swing for this year’s Senior School Christmas Concert which is taking place on Wednesday, 9th December. The evening will be a display of the tremendous talent we have here at St. Clare’s. Everyone is welcome and entrance to the concert is free, and there’ll even be free wine and mince pies! NOTTAGE NEWS The Festive Season is upon us and at school the children are primed for their moments of glory in the school concerts. The big day will be here before we turn round! Once again Children in Need day was a huge success with the whole school involved in a plethora of fundraising activities. The School Council kicked off the day by leading the assembly on Friday 13th. Harrison Dance, a born natural on the microphone, enthused the children to beat last year’s total - which I am pleased to say they did. What would we do without our fantastic PTA? I cannot praise the good work that they do enough! They have funded a whole host of resources for school including iPads, gardening equipment, astroturf, to name but a few. The Christmas Fayre was fabulous and they were there to provide and serve refreshments for the auditions of the Cerdd Dant 2015 held at school. During the course of the day, several hundred people from all parts of Wales attended the auditions. Many thanks to everyone who gave up their valuable time to lend a helping hand. A Very Happy Christmas from all at Nottage Primary School. Kerry Townley

OLAPLEX® - ONE INGREDIENT CHANGES EVERYTHING Hair by Abi is proud to be amongst the first in the UK to launch Olaplex as a new in salon service. This revolutionary new colour upgrade service has become a sensation amongst Hollywood’s ‘A’ celebrities and across the world. The Holy Grail for Hair Colour. “If a beauty company could keep chemical treatments from hurting hair, that’d really be something.” These were the thoughts of Dean Cristal, founder of Olaplex when conceiving the scientific solution for this new wonder product. With Dean’s and his scientists discovery, hair colouring, may never been the same again…so here’s what Olaplex does: Olaplex helps rebuild the broken disulphide bonds within the hair that can break during chemical processes, particularly colouring or using thermal heated tools. Disulphide bonds are the bonds that give elasticity and strength to the hair. Use Olaplex as a pre-treatment or alongside colouring or lightening hair. This chemistry has never been seen before and opens up brand new possibilities in hairdressing colour variations. SEEING ….AND FEELING IS BELIEVING. GOOD NEWS FOR PORTHCAWL PROJECTS
PORTHCAWL TO GET NEW HEALTH CENTRE
Two major developments took place recently that are both really good news for Porthcawl. The community-driven project to establish a five-storey Maritime Centre received £50,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to develop plans and enable it to apply to the second stage of the process. If successful, the project will receive more than £1m to establish an all-weather community asset and visitor attraction near the seafront using a leasehold transfer of land from Bridgend County Borough Council. With a strong focus on coastal science and maritime-related history as well as sport, fitness, leisure, community learning and employment opportunities, the centre will be of huge benefit to the town. Elsewhere, Porthcawl’s new multi-million pound Townscape Heritage Initiative has also been officially launched and work is going ahead on refurbishing a number of historic old buildings, including the Jennings Building, Customs House, Pilot Lookout Tower, former Knights Arms and more. We are one of just two areas in the whole of the UK to have successfully set up three THI schemes, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how this develops and grows to bring further benefits to Porthcawl. Finally, I hope all readers enjoy a very merry Christmas, and a peaceful New Year.
Plans for a health centre in Porthcawl, which will replace two GP surgeries and the town’s clinic, have been under the spotlight. ABMu health board has been trying to provide this facility for a decade with land at The Green or on Salt Lake initially designated but the long and damaging delays in implementing the Porthcawl Regeneration Strategy, with no end yet in sight, has prompted them to look elsewhere. The new proposed site is on Newton Nottage road and a consultation event took place where local residents could ask questions and give their views. I understand that while everyone welcomed the plan, there are some reservations about the fact that the centre will not be near the town centre although it is served by a local bus. I sympathise with ABMu on this – they are between a rock and a hard place. People desperately need modern healthcare facilities and they need them now. So, on balance, I support this scheme which has to receive planning consent. But I do have a few reservations – will the proposed pharmacy see off some of our local chemists’ shops and are 48 car parking spaces enough?
Councillor Mel Nott OBE Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
TAX CREDITS CUT WILL HIT LOCAL FAMILIES The Welsh Liberal Democrats have calculated that 8,200 families in Bridgend and Ogmore will lose out under Conservative plans to cut tax credits. Figures produced by the House of Commons Library show over three million low-income working families currently in receipt of tax credits will see their entitlement reduced UK-wide as part of the Government’s proposals. The change will mean a total loss of £9m to families in our area with the average family losing £750 a year. Despite claims from the Conservatives that those affected will benefit from plans to increase the minimum wage, the independent Institute for Fiscal Studies has said Tory figures don’t stack up. The IFS analysis shows a £750 average loss will only be offset by £200 as a result of the new minimum wage. Liberal Democrats have opposed the move and said it undermines the work of the Coalition Government, to make sure it always pays more to be in work than on benefits. I am pleased that Liberal Democrats are opposing this measure. We worked hard in Coalition to ensure that work would always pay more than choosing to remain on benefits. It is a disgrace the Conservatives are now undermining this good work.
SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com
COULD YOU BECOME A TOURISM AMBASSADOR? Are you passionate about Porthcawl? Or are you the oracle on the Ogmore Valley? Together with the Bridgend Tourism Association, Bridgend County Borough Council is looking to recruit 30 volunteers who love our local coastline and countryside so much that they could act as tourism ambassadors for the area. Whenever people plan weekend breaks or holidays these days, they scour online reviews to pick up hints and tips of the best places to stay and things to do. This ambassador programme takes that a step further, giving potential visitors a chance to call up a friendly group of people who know the area better than anyone. We’re looking for people who work either inside or outside of the tourism industry – their most important attributes will be their enthusiasm, passion for the area and ability to shout about it to others. As well as being on hand to share advice, some of the ambassadors may be wordsmiths who are skilled at writing blogs and social media posts to help spread the word about what is special and unique about our county borough. If you’re interested in finding out more, please contact Tracy James Lieberman by emailing tracyjlevents@gmail.com or calling 07773 804470. News DAMAGING CUTS TO SOCIAL CARE? I worked in social care for many years before becoming an MP. I know the value of quality social care and how it can improve the lives of those who use its services. Social care services are now under severe strain and may be about to be damaged further. Statistics from the charity Scope show that 1 in 3 expect social care services to worsen in the next 5 years. 83% of disabled people don’t have enough hours in their care package. What does this actually mean for disabled people using these services; waiting 14 hours to go to the toilet, sleeping in your clothes, being unable to wash or eat, perhaps most crucially being left socially isolated. I received a letter from a local social care provider which set out the new dilemma and crisis facing social care. On the positive side the new national wage will be paid to care workers once it is introduced. Great. The new work place pension will give care workers greater security for their old age. Great. Except providers cannot pay these increased costs without increased income from either Local Authorities or service users. Bridgend CB Council has been trying to find £50 million in cuts so has no extra money. I have written to the Chancellor asking how we can square this circle while ensuring social care for the most vulnerable in our community remains an essential component of our society. PROPOSED MEDICAL CENTRE FOR PORTHCAWL I know many of you turned out last month to attend Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board’s Public Engagement Day giving details about the proposed medical centre for Porthcawl. There were a number of Exhibition Boards pointing out exactly where the site was, an artist’s impression of the centre and the proposed layout inside the building. On hand at the Public Engagement Day were representatives from ABMU, local GPs, the Community Health Council and the architect, Jim Hart, to answer questions and to hear feedback on the proposal. Whilst the site is not in the perfect location for everyone, we cannot ignore the fact that the current GP surgery sites and the Annexe from which the Community Services are provided are no longer fit for purpose. I don’t think anyone would argue against a brand new medical centre which can deliver the better healthcare services which meet the standards that patients expect and indeed demand. This issue has been ongoing for eight years and nobody wants to be having this conversation in another eight years time. If planning permission is granted then work on site could start as early as April 2016. Finally, I would like to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

THOUSANDS ENDURED 12-HOUR A&E WAITS The number of patients forced to endure 12-hour waits in the Princess of Wales Hospital reached into the thousands, figures found by Plaid Cymru have revealed. There was a total of 2,649 people waiting long periods in the accident and emergency department at the Bridgend hospital from October 2014 to September this year – that’s around one in six people in Porthcawl. When an average of 220 people at the Princess of Wales each month are left waiting for such long times for treatment, then serious questions must once again be asked of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg’s board, and how it is managing the unscheduled care of thousands of patients in its area. When you consider that there are a number of villages around Porthcawl that have fewer than 2,500 people living in them, that begins to give an idea of just how many people are waiting in A&E alone, as well as the extent of this issue. If the board or the Welsh Government – which is supposed to oversee our health service – says that only amounts to just under 6% of all patients seen respectively, I say even one person waiting over 12 hours is too long, that we must guard against somehow coming to regard this kind of occurrence as normal. It isn’t. It is totally unacceptable. BETHAN JENKINS AM Plaid Cymru www.bethanjenkins.org

News CANDIDATE CALLS FOR A STUDY TO RETURN THE TRAINS BACK TO PORTHCAWL The Conservative Assembly candidate for Bridgend has urged the Labour Welsh Government to conduct a feasibility study to extend the proposed Cardiff Metro system to Porthcawl. George Jabbour, who is facing First Minister Carwyn Jones AM in next year’s elections, said: “Porthcawl is a major tourist destination and it is vital it has proper transport links with other major towns across Wales. “Porthcawl must be one of the largest towns in South Wales without a rail link and it’s a shame that this was lost in the 1960’s”. Mr Jabbour, who has a background in both engineering and investment, added: “The current plans published by Welsh Government propose only to link the town to the rest of the Cardiff Metro system by bus – which Porthcawl already has. I have urged Welsh Government to undertake a feasibility study into the possibility of linking Porthcawl to the metro system at Bridgend by other means that could include a light rail or tramway. “Since launching this initiative, I have been inundated with messages of support and encouragement which only goes to show how important this issue is to local people.”

PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB NEWS
On September the 4th an annual charity coffee morning event was held at the Albert Edward Prince of Wales ladies Bowls club. The ladies bowling club, support varies local charities and on this occasion the Porthcawl Stroke Club, was one of those charities to receive support. This was no ordinary coffee morning, the bowling club ladies worked extremely hard, by taken the opportunity, to increase their charitable funds, through a variety of tabletop stalls. The 2015 Captain, Mrs Yvonne Guttridge, follows the traditions of the Guttridge family, who have for many years been charitable to local community projects. On Wednesday 28th of October a £350 cheque was presented to the Porthcawl Stroke Club by Chair Mrs Jean Downes and secretary Mrs Wendy Williams, who give up their valuable time to visit the Porthcawl Stroke and interact with the members. Porthcawl Stroke Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all those bowling ladies involved in the charity event. We would also like to thank all the community supporters and wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. Our thoughts also go to Porthcawl Stroke Club secretary Mr Ray Cross who is experiencing ill health at the moment. Also, to the members who are unable to attend. Anyone wishing to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club should contact Chairman Mr Keith Duggan on 01656 773375. LINK BETWEEN COMETS AND MASS EXTINCTIONS Scientists argue that periodic mass extinctions and impact craters are caused by comets and asteroids. Now there is support linking the age of the craters with mass extinctions of life, including the demise of the dinosaurs. They show a pattern of impacts and extinction events taking place every 26 million years. That cycle is linked to the periodic passage of the Sun and planets through inner regions of our Galaxy. Scientists theorise that perturbations of the distant Oort comet cloud that surrounds the Sun lead to periodic comet showers in the inner Solar System, where some comets strike the Earth. The correlation between the impacts and extinction events over the past 260 million years is striking and suggests a causeand-effect relationship. In particular, they found that six mass extinctions of life during the studied period correlate with times of enhanced impact cratering. One of the craters is the Chicxulub impact structure in the Yucatan, which dates from 65 million years ago, the time of a mass extinction that included the dinosaurs. Moreover, five out of the six largest impact craters of the last 260 million years on Earth correlate with mass-extinction events. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

FEATURES Y CEFN GWYRDD’S YEAR REVIEW
Y Cefn Gwyrdd’s year was brought to an end with its Annual General Meeting held at Cefn Cribwr Sports and Social Club [formally the Legion]. A satisfactory period which included some interesting walks, a well attended village barbecue, a limited period of Box openings, planting at the history wall and Bedford Close and the spreading of five tons of chippings around Cefn Junction! The play and concert which was organised under the Welsh Arts Council’s Night Out Scheme at the Green Hall was a real success, despite the unlucky coincidence that the Wales v South Africa game was held on the same day! Villagers were treated to a wonderful performance of ‘Burton’ by Rhodri Miles who led us through his childhood to his years as a world famous actor and his eventual demise, post Elizabeth Taylor. This was followed by some Gwyrdd homespun entertainment entitled View from the Ridge, which included guest appearances from talented Daisy and Jennet Young, Kit Hughes, Shaun Egan and Marc and Diane Weinzweig with the Mari Lwyd! Our programme continues with ‘Christmas Box’, carols and readings at Cefn Junction {Thurs 17th} and village carol singing on Monday 21st December. John Mason masoncj4@hotmail.com
NEWS FROM THE TALBOT It is said that a picture paints a thousand words! Well, take a look at the two photographs attached. The first one shows the Talbot Hall with the stage, as it used to be. The second shows the hall as it is now. The stage has been removed, to make way for a passageway and two storerooms, but with the re-installation of the hall curtains, it doesn’t look much different, especially with the addition of our portable staging. We are now concentrating on renovating the kitchen – we have knocked through and joined three small rooms to make one big, big kitchen! As for seasonal celebrations, don’t forget our ‘House Party’ on New Year’s Eve – there is still time to book a couple of seats, or why not bring a gang of friends and book a table. We bring our own refreshments, and make our own entertainment, and bring in the New Year with people we know. The last two years’ celebrations have been very successful, so let’s keep the community spirit going. A MESSAGE FROM REV LEWIS REES The Gospel of Luke tells us: “Jesus called the twelve together… and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal.” Three times in my life, someone has been so bold as to place their hands on my head or shoulders and pray explicitly for God’s blessing. This can be unsettling for some of us. But, sometimes someone seems to intuitively know that only a power higher than our own, working through them, can touch us. Think of the embrace of a loved one. Think of someone who truly listens to you. These are healing touches. All of us need more than a good prayer or a strong hug. But all of us first need power beyond our own that directly touches us with love and confidence. That’s what the message of Jesus is all about -- and how he becomes real for us and, through us, for others. This is what we prepare to celebrate all over again this Advent season. May you have a blessed Advent, and a Joyful Christmas and Peaceful New Year. Rev Lewis Rees Minister to Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

FEATURES THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Christmas is about Christ! Consider this Messianic prophecy from Isaiah 11:1: “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse: from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.” Jesse was the father of King David, 700 years before the birth of Jesus, Isaiah predicted that David’s family tree would suffer disaster, the trunk would be cut down. History records the last king of Israel saw his sons excuted before being blinded, the royal family line ending in exile. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the town where Jesse had his roots, he was of David’s line physically though his mother Mary, and legally through Joseph (their genealogies are recorded in the New Testament). Many bibles translate the word ‘Branch’ with a captial ‘B’. The translators showing it’s a title of the Messiah. In ancient Hebrew, which did not include vowels, it was written ‘NZR’. Matthew sees this fulfilled in the life of Jesus: ‘he will be called a Nazarene’ (Matthew 2:23). In Hebrew the word Nazarene would be written ‘NZR’. The ‘fruitfulness’ of Christ is the salvation he brought through His sacrifical death and resurrection. Jesus is the Christ (Messiah). Happy Christmas! Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church
TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE A VIEW FROM THE WORKSHOP Our little group in Porthcawl is like Santa’s workshop, willing volunteers toiling away to refurbish tools for use in Africa. And like at Christmas we are given presents of old and rusty tools that we are expected to do something with, we like a challenge, a bit like your first Meccano set. All tools are lovingly restored but like us some are a bit past it but we do our best. Particularly at this time of year it must be wonderful for someone with nothing, to receive a tool kit in a crate. These tools mean the difference between poverty and making enough money to feed and clothe your family. Like Santa’s helpers we are happy in our work, grinding, filing, drilling and hammering away trying to miss our thumbs. The hours are not long and we only work up to three afternoons a week. We even have a tea break, sometimes with cake and biscuits. Our next tool sale (tools not required for kits) is at Trinity Church Porthcawl on Saturday 5th December from 10.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. We really need more volunteers so if you would like something interesting and worthwhile to do on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons from 1.30pm, give John a call on 01656 786367. PORTHCAWL Y CENTRE NEWS
The Mayor and Mayoress of BCBC Councillor Richard and Mrs Annette Young visited the Y Centre during the half Term holiday. They enjoyed a busy two hours meeting members and users aged from 5 years to 80 of Porthcawl YMCA. They were met and escorted by YMCA President John Berry alongside Chairman John Hornsby, trustee Jade Rees and Senior Development Worker Claire Bridge.
The Mayor first visited the Pritchard Room where the Borough Plaque is displayed that was presented to the World President of the YMCA on his visit in June. They then visited members in Potter Y, an informal time for playing with clay. The Food Bank was open where they learned about the needs and distribution offering a balanced and healthy option to those in need. They learned from the volunteers the need for the Food Bank, its administration and its ramifications. H.M. COASTGUARD PORTHCAWL - TEAM NEWS Our callouts for October to mid-November picked back up after a very quiet previous month. At 22:30 on 29th October we were paged to a fisherman who had been knocked over by a wave whilst fishing on rocks between Sker Point and Pink Bay. After responding and helping to transport the Welsh Ambulance Service to the scene it was discovered that the casualty had suffered a suspected broken femur. Due to the rocky nature of the terrain, made very slippery by drizzle and an outgoing tide, our team made the decision to request a helicopter to winch the fisherman from the rocks and transport him to hospital. This became the first incident that we have undertaken with the new H.M. Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 187 based at RAF St Athan, who safely winched the casualty and a paramedic on board and transported them both to Morriston Hospital. On the 8th November as usual we joined in the Remembrance Sunday service at All Saints Church. The event was extremely well supported by the town with our standard paraded along with other local services and we were privileged to lay a wreath on behalf of H.M. Coastguard. Finally all the team would like to wish all readers of Seaside News a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. We will be on duty for the Christmas morning swim so please keep an eye out for us! Tim Vincent Station Officer

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS At Awel-y-Mor on Wednesday, Porthcawl Floral Arrangement Society held its annual Christmas Open Evening flower demonstration. The event was very well supported and the designs produced by demonstrator Adrian Cooke, were enjoyed and appreciated by one and all. The club’s new chairman, Anne Butler, gave a warm welcome to members from other flower clubs. It was good that Dwynwen Jones, the club President, was able to attend despite her recent illness. She is wished a full recovery. At the end of the evening all the flower arrangements were raffled and those who were lucky enough to win certainly left the hall full of the Spirit of Christmas. Members of the flower club would like to wish the staff and readers of The Seaside News a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Mair Stockford

The main meeting is the last Friday of every month, but we also meet on the 2nd Friday of the month for an exercise class and then we go out for a meal. In our September meeting Mr David Williams came and showed us the items he has made from wood. The items included a fruit bowl, pens and cigarette table lighters. They looked beautiful and were very tactile. In our October meeting Mr David Anderson gave us interesting talk, illustrated with slides on Norway and the Northern Lights. It is a strange and wonderful place where the winter night lasts 24 hours. While in summer it is reversed with 24 hours of daylight. All are welcome to our meetings for further information telephone 01656 783071. Rob Charlesworth

The administration of an estate is often a time consuming and frustrating process, particularly if it is a complex matter, and consists of a number of stages:1. Is there a Will? The first step is to determine whether or not there is a Will. If there is, then this will appoint a person(s) who will be responsible for dealing with the estate, the Executor. If there is no Will, then the law of intestacy will determine who the responsible person is, the Administrator. 2. Valuation The next stage is to ascertain exactly what assets are in the estate. This will involve writing to any financial institutions, instructing surveyors to value any property, and liaising with accountants regarding the valuation of any business assets held. 3. Inheritance Tax Once the value of the estate has been calculated, it is then necessary to account to HM Revenue and Customs for the payment of any inheritance tax which may be due. 4. Application for Probate On completion of any tax affairs, the person responsible for the estate can then apply for Probate (or Letters of Administration if there is no Will). This is the Court Order which proves that the Executor is entitled to deal with the estate and give a receipt for the proceeds of the various assets. 5. Closure of assets Following receipt of the Grant of Probate, the person responsible for the estate can then cash in any assets, deal with the sale of any property and settle any debts that the deceased may have had. During this period it is also necessary to wind up any income tax affairs. 6. Distribute the estate Only when the Executor is satisfied that all steps have been taken to deal with the above, can they then distribute the estate in accordance with the terms of the Will (or the law relating to intestacy). At Douglas-Jones Mercer, we have been administering estates since 1946, and believe that you should concentrate on looking after yourself when you have lost a loved one, and let us concentrate on the financial affairs. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI
SKER WI NEWS
We met on the 10th November as usual in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill. The weather was bad but we still had a good turn out. W.I. matters were discussed and minutes read. We had a bring and buy to raise funds for our charity, many Christmas presents were purchased that day I’m sure, Christmas seems to be rushing at us with our Christmas Party organized, Christmas dinner arranged, a Carol Festival in Swansea, and a craft spectacular in Margam Orangery. Also, a coffee morning to enjoy. Our speaker this month was Debra John whose talk was (Edwardian Maid), she spoke to us as though we were applying for a job in the big house, and she told us how the upstairs and downstairs maids worked and in the case of the footmen didn’t work, she was very funny and we all enjoyed her talk but were glad we didn’t need the job she was telling us about. No speaker next month, it’s our Christmas Party and we are all looking to our (pass the parcel) much laughter and good food, a little wine, but always tea and biscuits. Christine Callaghan
At the November meeting of Sker WI president Nora Williama welcomed the members present on a wet and windy evening. The Fashion Show was a success, with members modeling the clothes, and £300 was raised for funds. The speaker for the evening was Angela Gorman, a qualified nurse, who gave us a talk on “Working with African Mothers”. Angela set up a charity in 2005 (after watching a BBC Panorama documentary) to help mothers and their new babies in Africa. The Charity provides medication to treat and prevent the causes of maternal death. Angela goes to Africa regularly during the year and makes sure as much as possible is being done to help the mothers and babies. Members donated baby clothes, some of which they had knitted themselves. There is our Christmas Fayre coming up soon in Trinity Church Hall from 10am - 12midday. In early Decmber we have a trip to Llanelli House to look forward to. The next meeting is on Thursday 10 December at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage when it is ‘Party Time’ with a Fish & Chip supper and entertainment to follow. The competition will be the best Fancy Dress. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. Ann Vipond
PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL NEWS Our November meeting was extremely busy. The agenda included two speakers and our business meeting. Following the dinner at the Grove Golf Club, Alison Westwood gave an illustrated talk on how to pack parcels of various shapes and sizes. She used different kinds of wrapping paper and colourful ribbons. It was an informative, interesting and enjoyable talk at the beginning of a very long evening. Afterwards President Mary led us rapidly through the essential monthly business, which included a report on the very successful Coffee Morning held on 30th October. Members of Rotary joined us for the second talk of the evening. The topic was the Proposed Primary Care and Community Services Centre for Porthcawl. The speaker was Mr. Lindsey Morgan. He explained that a new centre was needed because the current sites were not fit for purpose. The new centre would offer vastly improved facilities, car parking, and would be accessible to patients using the regular bus routes. Questions were invited from the audience and many members expressed concerns about the suitability and convenience of the chosen site. It was a lively and informative meeting. Finance Investors who save over the long term for the proverbial ‘rainy day’ are far more likely to achieve their goals than those looking to ‘play the market’ in search of a quick profit. The longer you invest, the bigger the potential effect of compound performance will be on the original value of your investment. Many of you will be familiar with the term ‘compounding’ whereby interest on your money is added to the original principal amount and that, in turn, earns interest. Over time, compounding can make a significant difference. Similarly, your investments can benefit from compounding if you re-invest any income you receive. You should remember, however, that the value of stock market investments will fluctuate causing prices to fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount you invested. Shares, bonds, property and cash react differently in varying conditions and opting for more than one asset class can help to ensure your investments won’t all rise or fall in value at the same time. Holding a portfolio of investments in collective investment scheme can help to diversify the risks associated with investing in individual assets and markets as well as less visible hazards such as inflation risk. If you would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Christmas swim news: The swim will follow the same timings and format as previous years, with the swim starting at 11:45. This year’s main charity to be supported is Porthcawl RNLI, who are this year celebrating their 50th Anniversary, smaller local organisations will also be supported. For those who wish to drees up, the fancy dress theme will be ‘pirates and parrots’, I hope to see you there. Chris Ellis One Life Financial 01656 785700
OVER-60S NOW WELL CATERED FOR As we approach Christmas, many of us in the 60-plus bracket will be looking closely at the finances and in many cases, wondering about how to deal with the problem of still having a mortgage but not the capital with which to pay it off. Well, the good news is that lenders are starting to wake up to providing the much-needed financial facilities that are becoming available to older borrowers. Do YOU have a mortgage or loan secured against your property but not the capital to pay it off? Do you have the need to raise capital to fund a project or to help the Family in some way? Do you have debts that you would prefer to pay off, hence saving repayments that are, perhaps, expensive? If the answer is YES, please call us for an informal chat. There are many ways of dealing with the issue and we may be able to help you to achieve what you are trying to do. Talking to us costs you nothing and could well resolve a problem for you. Now, for those people over the age of 50 but who have health issues and therefore feel unable to get life assurance cover, there is now a solution, where the only medical question you need to answer is whether you smoke or not. You are guaranteed to get cover and I am not talking about products sold on TV, where getting a free pen for enquiring seems to be a highlight. The established best UK cover of this type is available from an Seaside News | 38
established life assurance mutual company, with superb service credentials and the industry’s top 5-star rating. It is affordable and provides great peace of mind, providing a solution to many people’s concerns about getting cover when health problems affect them later in life. We can assist you in this area – an experienced Adviser will look after your needs, as you would expect – and if you MUST have a free pen, that can be arranged. Call us today on 01656 782545. In the meantime, we wish all our column readers and clients, a Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a great 2016 to follow, in what will be out 29th year in business, serving the public throughout South Wales and beyond.

HIDDEN CONSEQUENCES For many the new Flexible Access Pension rules were a welcome addition, with many individuals over the age of 55 seeing it as an ideal opportunity to access some old pension scheme whist continuing to contribute to their existing private or occupational arrangements. But few fail to realise that even if they are only accessing the tax free element of their old scheme that they could be triggering a tax charge on their ongoing contributions. It is therefore imperative that advice is obtained before any decision is made. The government has kindly launched a free website www.pensionwise.gov.uk for individuals to gather information around their pension options. We will consult with you entirely at our cost, we will also put together a report with our recommendations entirely at our cost. We will only charge a fee where you are entirely comfortable with the advice and that you can see genuine value in working with us. Our advice is be very careful with doing something yourself, we have seen first hand the consequences of people getting it wrong. Ian Davies Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 01656 347000

BIRD WATCH: TWENTY YEARS
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. Garden BirdWatch is the largest year-round survey of garden birds in the world and has been running for twenty years. Through simple weekly observations we can learn how, when and why birds and other wildlife use our gardens. Participants enjoy combining their hobby of watching garden birds with contributing to an important scientific survey. On average 29 different bird species have been recorded per garden. Blackbird, Blue Tit and Robin are still among the top five species seen in gardens, but who would have envisaged that the House Sparrow would drop out of this five and that Woodpigeon would creep up? Other wildlife can be noted and 481 different species have now been recorded. The average number of species per garden is 34.9 but one Cumbrian garden has recorded 167! Please consider joining to contribute records to the next twenty years (a subscription also makes a great Christmas gift)! Contact me for more information, a free enquiry pack or to book a talk (Swansea area). Amanda Skull: 07952 758293 gbw@hiafi.co.uk www.bto.org/gbw Follow me on Twitter @amanda_skull
December already! Frost, rainfall and winds and possible snow to look forward to. My allotment friend tells me that he is gathering in remaining root crops, leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage and sprouts before the weather gets too bad. Winter hardy broad-beans can be sown under cover and garlic can be planted now if the soil is not waterlogged or frozen. Rhubarb can be divided now and replanted. This is the time to spend looking at seed catalogues and to plan next year’s crop rotation. Begonias are beginning to fade, such a shame, they have been blooming throughout in pots and baskets, and with all the wind and rain we’ve had, apart from the losing the odd bloom they have held firm. I will certainly have more of the same for next year whilst hopefully keeping the old faithful. The fuchsias have left lots of berries. I am told that they make delicious jam, something different for our show next year perhaps? I tasted one of the berries and to my surprise it was quite nice, not sure about different varieties though. Happy Christmas to everyone enjoy time spent with family and friends. Gwen Bradford

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB December! - Cold weather, particularly frost, causes the water in plant cells to freeze, damaging them especially where plants face the morning sun, as they defrost too quickly, rupturing their cell walls, frost damaged plants become black and distorted with the leaves on evergreens turning brown. Even hardy plants can be damage by spells of severe cold when the soil becomes frozen and they are unable to take up moisture, so protect where you can, leaving old growth on tender plants will protect the crown of the plant, (taking the brunt of any frost damage). Shake any snowfall (good grief!) from shrubs and trees. Avoid high nitrogen fertilisers as these encourage new leaf growth (a prime target for frost damage). Cheerful isn’t it? Prune Japanese Acers and vines now as they will bleed sap if left any later don’t forget to net your brassicas before the poor hungry pigeons get them! Did you know that apple seeds contain cyanide? (Though I bet your mother told you not to swallow them or an apple tree would grow in your tummy!) We have a Christmas party in Cefn Legion on Dec 12th – great fun – do come! Happy Christmas! Health MEAT EATING
TENOVUS CANCER CARE PORTHCAWL
The Department of Health’s scientific advisers recently concluded that red and processed meat ‘probably’ increase the odds of bowel cancer, but the WHO is expected to go further by saying processed meat causes cancer. The decision follows a meeting of scientists from ten nations, including the UK, who reviewed all available evidence. They are believed to have agreed processed meat is ‘carcinogenic to humans’, the highest of five possible rankings, shared with alcohol, asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes. Examples are ham, bacon, pastrami and salami, as well as hot dogs and some sausages. Burgers are also expected to be included. Processed meat is made by smoking, curing, salting, or adding chemicals, red meat is expected to be one rung below, ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’. Meat in general contains high concentrations of fat and it is thought the compound that gives meat its red colour may damage the bowel lining. Processed meat has previously been blamed for one in 30 deaths and is seen as dangerous because preserving techniques can raise levels of cancer-causing chemicals. It is estimated that if intake was cut to 20g a day – a rasher of bacon a day or an English breakfast once a week – almost 20,000 early deaths would be prevented in the UK each year. DIABETIC FOOT CARE
October was Breast Cancer Awareness month. As part of fundraising during the month volunteers and friends attended a ‘Big Pink Sunday’ lunch in the RAFA Club Porthcawl on the 25th October. The event raised £500.00 for the charity. To everyones amazement Lewis Hodder and Zac Griffiths, both having lost close relatives to cancer, had dyed there hair in the summer and have passed their sponsorship of £350.00 between them to the Tenovus Charity and Jackie Thomas, having suffered breast cancer, who dyed her hair pink raised over £1100.00 in sponsorship in less than two weeks for the charity. I want to thank the three of them for their kindness in taking on this challenge for Tenovus. Also, without the wonderful support of those who sponsored Lewis, Zac and Jackie this would not have been possible. Thank you so much to them and to Adrian of Fox’s Hairdressing, Porthcawl for dying Jackie’s hair at no cost. Pat Aspey Porthcawl Branch Manager
Damage to your nerves is the thing most likely to affect your feet if you have diabetes. It is relatively common for people with diabetes to not feel foot problems until they have developed, as nerve damage often shows itself gradually over time. However, some noticeable signs are a loss of feeling and sensation in the feet, tingling, or pins and needles. Even if your feet look healthy, it is important to ensure you have regular check-ups with a foot care professional as well as a diabetic assessment at least once each year. Consider the following advice on how to take care of your feet: SHOES - It is important to wear well-fitting shoes that don’t squeeze or rub. BE AWARE - Be aware of any loss of sensation in your feet. Don’t walk barefoot and avoid extremes of temperature. TOENAILS - Cut or file your toenails regularly. CHECK YOUR FEET EVERY DAY - Look for any signs of redness, pain, corns or build up of hard skin. TOUCH TEST - Ask a family member or friend to do a quick ‘touch test’ to assess the feeling in your toes. Lee Giles First Choice Footcare Tel: 07815848339

POEMS CHRISTMAS
In Bethlehem a star shone bright Lightening up this heavenly night, It shone down bright on a manger small Where Jesus Christ was born, we do recall, This manger was the only place For the birth of this child, this child of grace, Each Christmas day we celebrate When people rejoice and congregate, We open the doors to out holy places When carols are sung with happy faces, We trim our homes with decorations As people do throughout our nation, We decorate our Christmas tree with great delight With pretty baubles and some fairy lights, Our children await this special day Wondering what gifts will come on Santa’s sleigh, The Reindeers antlers are covered in frost They,ll get Santa there whatever the cost, The bells on their necks ring out merrily As children listen, but cannot see, Their looks of awe and shouts of glee When all their presents they do see, The parents share the joy on their faces When through their gifts their fingers race, We eat and drink and have some fun So a Merry Christmas everyone. Basil Walters Cefn Glas, Bridgend
PAUSE FOR THOUGHT AT CHRISTMAS
If we had lived in Bethlehem in those days of long ago With all this fuss of taxes, folk milling to and fro And if we’d seen that maiden, so weary and so worn Knowing that she must soon give birth and no place to lay her Son Might we have paused and pondered, but then passed on our way? ‘Poor soul’ we’d sigh, ‘what could we do? We’ve folk coming to stay Maybe they might make room in the inn, where it’s just one more mouth to feed Yes, of course we care, and we love to share, but we cannot meet every need. But if we had heard that none made room, and a baby on the hay But how angels sang and wise men came, would we wish we’d done more that day? But is He coming today in the refugee, and in those with no place to go? Then will we still sigh and pass on by, or ask, ‘Lord, Show us what we can do’ ? Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl Seaside News | 46
WHAT RIGHT HAS SHE GOT TO BE HAPPY? What right has she got to be happy Said a friend to me one day, with people at war and wanting and suffering in every way?
What right has she got to be happy with taxes as high as the sky and with the cost of living still rising, why is she so happy, why? What right has she got to be happy, when the weather’s so miserably bleak, when the sun shines for a day and then goes away and it’s wet for the rest of the week? What right has she got to be happy, when she can’t walk or talk or see, why is she smiling so brightly, it’s truly a mystery to me? What right have you got to be moaning, came my eventual reply, you should be glad to be fit and able, be grateful, don’t decry. What right have you got to be moaning, just look at her and you’ll see, that the only reason she’s happy is... she’s simply decided to be. (Emily has cerebral palsy) John Weaver, Emily’s Dad.

MERRY CHRISTMAS DAD I will miss you dad at Christmas time, In my own special way. I’ll really miss you even more, At home on Christmas day. I remember all the times we had, Having all the things we liked. Lots of little presents, And the main one was a bike. There were always lots of toys, Some wrapped up in a little box. With tangerines and chocolates, In stockings made from your socks. I won’t forget you at Christmas time, I may be a little sad. I will look up towards the sky, And say “Merry Christmas Dad.” David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend
JUST A CAT
And so he is gone. Six days have passed, and I cannot speak of him; “Why?” people ask. “After all, he was just a cat.” Six weeks from now I will “see” Leo on his wall; and weep. But why? He was just a cat. Six months from now his haunts will still whisper to me Of days and nights abroad; of his adventures wild; Indeed, he was just a cat. In six years I will treasure memories of his sweet face, And yet my heart will ache for missing him. Was he just a cat? No. He was a character, a rascal boy He generated joy; He walked a walk and talked a talk That no other creature could. His legs were made of rubber bands, His bones of tensile steel, He raced through life with an energy No other cat could feel. He patrolled the streets by night and day In wind and rain and sun He would not sit if he could walk, Nor walk if he could run. He shone a light into our lives And gave us untold joy. Now he is gone but the light remains... He was our special little boy. So no, he was not “just a cat” He was far more, far more than that. So today and every day we will inwardly cry Because he meant so much to us; And we will miss him always, until the day we die. John Keylock, Porthcawl
TO MISS SOMEONE
To miss someone Is to love someone Despite the fact they’re not there To miss someone Is to carry on loving Every minute Every Day Everywhere And to miss someone Is to take the strength That they had When they were with you And to use that strength To miss them In the way They would have wanted you to. Ahnuh is the only contestant from Bridgend in the competition and achieved a standing ovation in her previous opera performance. SAVOYARDS’ SORCERY CASTS ITS SPELL
The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards enchanted the audience with its recent production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Sorcerer” at The Grand Pavilion. It was the 21st charity production from what is now a well oiled machine, under the enthusiastic direction of Roger Hudd, Musical Director, and Andrew Griffiths, Stage Director. Orchestra, Chorus and soloists combined to delight us with a simple comedy of love potions and mismatched lovers. Alexis, who sets the plot in motion, has a noble plan; he wants to create in the village ‘a lucid lake of liquid love’. The main characters combined exactly the right amount of comic acting with beautiful singing and some tender moments. The Sorcerer himself, Rob Reynolds, was an excellent villain. Plenty of witty lines; ‘beauty may perish but cleanliness is everything’, added to the entertainment. The evening raised approximately £2,000, divided this year between The Save The Children Fund, Macmillan Cancer Support, and Prostate Cymru. If you missed this year’s production, then make a note to come along next year; it’s always a great evening out, with familiar faces from the local community adding to the enjoyment! We are all working together as a team to ensure success of the project to enable the collaboration to go from strength to strength. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I managed to get a copy of Porthcawl’s newest talent, Rebecca Hurn’s, stunning new E.P. “Lions”. It’s the singer/songwriter’s debut C.D. and in the first 48 hours of its download release, it got to number 5 in the iTunes charts. The C.D. has four tracks, “Lions”, “Lighthouse”, “War” and “Wildfire”. All four songs are strong, but “Lions” is my favourite and it shows off Rebecca’s unique voice and her competent acoustic guitar work. She runs an “open mike” night at the Farmer’s Arms in Nottage every Thursday evening so if you fancy giving a song or just want to have a good time, check it out and thanks to Rebecca’s dad Richard for keeping me informed. After their number one album, The Stereophonics play Cardiff Motopoint Arena on 12th and 13th December. Thanks for all my birthday greetings! I’m not bad for 47 and I haven’t a grey hair (well, that hasn’t been dyed!) By the time you read this, my tree will be up, being that time of year again. A big thanks to my lovely minders for keeping me in check, everyone who supports the column and not forgetting Mat and staff who run the mag. Have a Merry Xmas and Prosperous New Year. Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
Last month I mentioned that I was sorting through dozens of rolls of black and white 16mm film dating from the early 1930s for my film about Penarth. It took a whole weekend to get through it all, running each spool on a projector, bringing the past vividly to life. The films were the home movies of one of the town’s wealthy ship-owning families, and much of it was about everyday family life, a wedding, children, parties, fetes, Lacrosse matches, but amongst it were those rare little gems: the German airship “Graf Zeppelin” flying over the house in July 1932, two ships berthed in Penarth dock, heavy seas pounding the esplanade. The family employed servants and probably led a very sober, respectable existence, but best of all were the little snippets showing them larking about and pulling silly faces when they thought nobody was looking. Priceless! The difficult task was editing it to include the most interesting bits, but the wonderful thing about old films is you never really get tired of looking at them because they open your eyes to a completely different world. “The Garden by the Sea: A Story of Penarth” is out on DVD in December. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Our membership is still increasing and is now at an all-time high. We have had some great presentations this month, including talks by Mari Owen and Dennis Russ. We also held our annual Dennis Lines Memorial Trophy Competition, where each member could enter up to four images. Harry Gardiner judged the competition, awarded the points and provided an excellent critique on each image. It was a very close fought competition and the winner with 20 points was Geoff Baker with “My Paws are Freezing”. Seven images achieved 19 points for second place and fourteen images achieved 18 points for third place! Congratulations to Geoff for winning the competition with an outstanding score of a 20 and three 19s from his four images! Thanks to everyone who participated for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We have a full programme lined up for the coming season, including presentations, competitions, practical evenings and our Christmas dinner. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds on 01656 772831 for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Arts EXTRA CELEBRATIONS FOR CANTORION COETY AT CHRISTMAS
Cantorion Coety is hoping to celebrate the release of their first CD recording in time for Christmas this year. The Choir’s large repertoire encompasses all aspects of Welsh choral music, including contemporary compositions, traditional music, hymns and folk songs as well as translations of songs from other cultures. The recording was made earlier this year at Gilead Chapel, Spencer Road, Coity, where the choir practices are held each week. The provisional proof tracks of the CD have been produced for assessment. Musical Director, Eira Paskin and Accompanist, Gareth Waite can be well pleased with their efforts, since the consensus of opinion is that the CD will be a very good and valuable representation of the Choir’s ability and depth of the present repertoire. Cantorion Coety has a busy time leading up to Christmas. The Choir will be present at the Gilead Chapel Christmas Tree Festival on Monday 7th of December and will also be performing at the Tabenacl Chapel Christmas Carol Service to be held at 3pm on Sunday 13th December, at Derewen Road, Bridgend. The Choir launched a web site in the early autumn; therefore more information is available, if required, on www. catorioncoety/cymru Alun Roberts Jones Publicity Officer
PORTHCAWL MUSEUM NEWS Welsh Museum’s Festival Week at Porthcawl Museum was an incredible experience. Volunteers worked hard throughout the week to transform Cell 2 into a witch’s den complete with cauldron, bats, spiders and an enchanted wishing tree! Skeletons hung in the New Wing, the corridor and the backyard along with flying ghosts and other weird creatures of the night. Everyone had a great time, and there was a constant stream of visitors. The evening was filmed by the organisers of the Welsh Museums Festival as part of a promotional video for next year’s event. Coming up: December 12th ,11-1pm Carols for Shoppers accompanied by Porthcawl Town Orchestra. All details are on the museum website www.porthcawlmuseum.com Judith Shawe

A MESSAGE FROM DAME DOROTHY DO-IT Hello! As always at this time of year I am trying to get myself into shape for the panto season. I have taken on board that the key to losing weight is a balanced diet and so for breakfast this morning I made two bacon butties rather than one so I could balance it out and hold one in each hand. I am not really clear on whether you can eat one first or then the other or have to take alternate equal bites to keep it balanced – if anyone knows please share it with me. I have also ordered my make-up for panto season. A tanker of foundation, two barrels of mascara, and three dozen more ‘Red Fiesta’ lipsticks. I think that should just about see me through the run. So fingers crossed everything is coming together now so let’s get ready for … Pantotime! Cheerio for now! Dame Dorothy Do-It

Sport PORTHCAWL & PYLE BOXING CLUB Only the 18th December trecco bay holiday park are helping their local boxing club - Porthcawl & Pyle pumas ABC by hosting a boxing show in order to help them raise funds towards the maintenance, upkeep and renewal and supply of boxing and gym equipment for members to use. The club is a non-profit organisation who cater for kids from 7 years up to adults of all ages. The club look to teach kids respect and to control their aggression and to keep kids out of trouble! Also on a competitive side the club regularly help local kids achieve their dreams of becoming a Welsh Xhampion. Last year Porthcawl ABC produced two Welsh Novice Champions, one Welsh Schoolboy Champion and two kids went on to box in the British Championships! This year we have just had one female Welsh Novice Champion and two boys Welsh Novice Champions, after winning their finals on the weekend, and one more finalist who unfortunately lost his hard fought bout. We are looking to see if any businesses would like to be part of this great event and to help us with our aim by sponsoring a bout on the night - where your company logo will be projected onto the screen at the venue and you will have the opportunity to be called up into the ring to present the trophies to the boxers. We are asking for a donation of £50 towards our fundraising for the sponsorship of the bout. Also opening times for the club for anyone looking to get involved are: Tuesdays and Thursday 7’s to 9’s 4:30pm till 5:30 pm / 10’s till teens 5pm till 6:30pm. Monday, Wednesday and Friday: seniors 5pm till 7pm on new road Porthcawl. Nick Durn

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARDS SAY THANK YOU
Porthcawl Lifeguards would like to say a massive thank you to the ‘Rally in the Woods’ bikers for donating a large cheque to the club. We are very grateful to be picked to receive this donation and will put the money to good use. With much of our equipment coming in for heavy use, especially by our juniors, we need to start replacing some of our older boards ready for next season. This will also then help to free up other funds which can be used to help towards maintaining the club building for current and future members of the club and allow us to carry on providing surf lifesaving training to young people in Porthcawl. PORTHCAWL TAI CHI NEWS Our loyal members of the Monday morning two hour advanced class are now enjoying Sun Style Bagua Jian in addition to the usual Taiji sequences. The non profit Swimming Dragon School only charges £2 per hour and the large Awel-y-Mor hall can hold many more students so it is a wonder why more do not attend this advanced class. Members of this class and of our Bridgend evening class are looking forward to the week end course, in Porthcawl, early next year, when the course instructor will be the famed leading Sun Style European master, Mr P. Nyfelt of Sweden, pictured above. Meanwhile the Porthcawl Friday morning beginners Tai Chi class at Awel y Mor are doing well with our many new members enjoying learning our easy to learn, copyright Tai Chi therapy programme. SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT October was a good month for surf with quite small swell reaching up the channel to Ogmore and Southerndown. The surf was best just before high tide on each swell as the waves got a little bigger making it worth a dip. Most days were summer October sunny and 2ft with the occasional 3ft set. The conditions have been glassy everyday through October. It was an Indian summer for sure and with waves. Into November it has become stormy with Hurricanes hitting the headlines like ‘’ Hurricane Kate to batter Britain with two months of rain this weekend’’. It’s just too rough to bother. Looking across to Coney Beach in Porthcawl, even that is a mush of white water. We have a new slip being built at Southerndown replacing the old one, which has been destroyed over the years by storms. The hanging cliffs look more dangerous than ever so be warned to stay away. We have hundreds of houses as well being built along this coast and road works etc. My heart goes out to Paris and all of France. Peace is the only thing to fix this world. No bull, no lies, no wars. Just love and peace. D.A. Batten www.tuskasurf.co.uk

Sport PORTHCAWL RFC U7’S NEWS
TAP IT OUT CC Great weather in October was enjoyed by all at the club. Lots of new faces and some old ones returning and enjoying the October sunshine. Rob ‘mountain legs’ Jones took a group out on one of his trademark hilly routes around the Swansea valley, which turned out to be a fantastic ride. Laurence Hunt rode his first 100 miler up to Llandovery and over the black mountain, an excellent effort by the youngster and showed all day what an accomplished rider he’s becoming. Our new winter kit has been ordered and will arrive in December. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank KNM Windows, Finnegan’s Fish & Chips, Kontroltek, Ye Olde Wine House, Prostrate Cymru and Sweet & Nostalgic for their continued support and helping us provide a community cycling club. Club rides are Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. All new members welcome so any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Nicky Morgan
The
PVC FASCIA
The season is now in full flow and an additional 4 games have been played. Once again we have outscored our opposition in every match, which included Valley Ravens, Glynneath, Treorchy and Maesteg Celtic...2 other matches were called off due to the Great British weather. The above matches saw us score an additional 56 tries and conceding only 11 tries. The boys are continuing their development by working hard in training and playing very skilful rugby in matches. The boys are using skills that you would expect from older age groups. Lets hope that the weather does not affect match days too much so that the boys can continue their excellent season. Many thanks to Ashton Building Construction for their donation towards the boys rugby shorts, the sponsorship is very much appreciated. Geraint Evans
