RE: WHO WROTE THE HYMN

PERSONAL QUOTES & SAYINGS

Dear Editor, G D Morris (November Seaside News) is right. Peter Williams wrote the Cwm Rhondda in English, but William Williams wrote it in Welsh. No doubt both were impressed with William Morgan’s translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. God’s name in William Morgan’s Bible, in Psalm 83:18 is translated is Jehofah. Wynford Vaughan-Thomas says, in his book, Wales - A History: “The Bible was finally printed in 1588, and by means of it, the goal of every Welshman could draw the truth of the Scriptures in his own language.” C Brown, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I was approached by a Seaside News reader enquiring if I would mention some of my personal quotes and sayings that I had made up over the years. ‘In life, it is not having what you want but wanting what you have’. ‘Life is changeable but your principles are not’. ‘Your memory is precious, do not abuse it’. ‘Education is the key to life but common sense is paramount’. ‘Your wealth is judged by the size of the hole in your pocket’. ‘A smile is nicer than a scowl’. ‘The distance you travel in life depends on the driver’. ‘You can run away from problems but they always catch you up’. ‘Words spoken in anger are cast in stone’. ‘As you get older the years disappear like melting snow’. ‘Don’t judge others until you have judged yourself’. ‘The world has the moon but I have my sunshine!’ John Jenkins, Porthcawl

RE: YOUR VIEWS, NOVEMBER ISSUE Dear Editor, In the November issue G D Morris wrote to correct a letter in the October issue which stated that the Hymn “Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer” was written by William Williams. G D Morris stated that William Williams “did not”, he wrote it in Welsh and that it was “written in English by Peter Williams”. I am not an expert on Hymns and am not even religious in any way but this Hymn was one of my late father’s favourites. If you check it out It was actually written as stated in your October issue by William Williams (in Welsh) and was later translated into English by Peter Williams. Some references state that the author William Williams aided him with the translation. There are many Shakespearean Plays that have been translated into Welsh (which is great) but you would not say that they were written by the translator; William Shakespeare is still the ‘author’. Huw Thomas, Porthcawl

When a road accident brings them together, Luke impulsively offers them shelter in his home. Will this Christmas give them the best present of all: a new family? Local history CHRISTMAS 1939 Four months into the war and the Porthcawl Police and Airraid Wardens were vigilant in maintaining the ‘Blackout’ regulations and seeking out ‘Aliens.’ Coal Merchants Luther Prothero, Victoria Avenue, and Thomas David, Wellfield Avenue, were both fined £1 for failing to screen the lights of their motor vehicles. Whilst Dorothy Griffiths of Nicholls Avenue was fined same for showing lights from her side windows. Also, on Nicholls Avenue, two establishments were fined for, respectively, failing to register ‘aliens’ at the Police Station. One Polish and one Russian. However, there were few other restrictions. Showing Christmas lights was obviously prohibited but food rationing had yet to be enforced. Hotels and restaurants were busy, most items, especially toys, were available in the shops and ‘Goodbye Mr Chips’ was showing at the Casino. Despite the absence of family members, through call up or their inability to travel due to the rationing of petrol, most people were determined to keep up morale and enjoy the festive season. Nowhere was this attitude more prevalent than at RAF Newton Down; later to be re-named RAF Stormy Down in October 1940. RAF, trainee electrician Alan Wright kept his menu card from that first Christmas. He later went abroad but returned to Porthcawl in 1946 to marry Betty Walker, Northways, and take her home to Devon. Ceri Joseph

Duncan Barber FRAeS, a long time supporter of all things RAF. The visitors were given a guided tour by museum secretary Ceri Joseph who, during a break, served the guests with Welsh cakes and some novelty Spitfire-shaped biscuits, which were enjoyed by all those who attended. Maggie commented that she was “hugely impressed by the commitment, passion and professionalism of everyone I met at Porthcawl. The team’s warm welcome and genuine passion for sharing their inspiring collections and stories was very special indeed. I wish them every success with their plans for the future and look forward to seeing them continue to grow and flourish”. Porthcawl museum, which is the only accredited museum in the County Borough, is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm. David Swidenbank

BRIDGEND AND DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY This month Rob and Ann Taylor gave us a fascinating talk on how the famous Dambusters’ raid on the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams had vital connections to Wales. Of the 133 crew who took part in the raid, 23 were either from Wales or were trained in Wales. Stormy Down was a gunnery school where men were trained to operate the powered gun turrets on the bombers, which were used in the raid, and St Athan was a training station for aeronautical engineers. Other Welsh connections included Tondu House near Bridgend where the Torpex explosive was developed, which was used in the bouncing bombs, and Howarden in Flintshire was used to modify the Lancaster’s to carry the bouncing bomb. Quarter scale dams were constructed on the Nant y Gro Dam in the Elan Valley to test and develop the bouncing bomb to maximise its affect. Clearly Wales played an important part helping to prepare for and carry out this vital raid to help win the war. Tragically 53 aircrew were killed and three were captured. Next meeting on 11th December at 7.00 pm at Carnegie House when Roger Morgan will talk on ‘Being Santa’.

School reports BRIDGEND COLLEGE MUSIC

Since the beginning of the term, we have had a variety of masterclasses and shows taking place in College. In October we had an insightful masterclass by Grammy award-winning Record Producer Andrew Scheps. He was so inspirational for our learners in the open Q&A. Andrew has produced/Mixed Metalica, Beyonce, Adele, Green Day, RHCP, Jay Z and many more. All the staff would like to give a big congratulations to our second year Level 3 students for the performance of their Halloween show titled ‘Spooktacular’ that has received excellent feedback from the full audience on every show. In early November our Music Production Degree students went to the Famous Rockfield’s Studios, which is in Monmouth. Rockfield Studios has produced some of the most famous records in the world that include artists such as Queen, Oasis, Stone Roses, and Black Sabbath among others. Our learners had the privilege of spending two days in this iconic studio using their equipment and recording an excellent band called ‘Zervas and Pepper’. This is just one of the many experiences we offer to our learners on our Degree program. #create #perform #record #rockfieldstudios #bridgendmusic #performbridgend Adam Richards Bridgend College arichards@bridgend.ac.uk

BRYNTEG NEWS

Brynteg has had a wonderful start to the academic year and I am sure 2020 will be just as successful. Some of the highlights have included our pupils meeting astronaut Sir Tim Peake at the UK Space Conference in Newport during September. Sir Tim Peake made time for our students as a group and they discussed all things space, what an exciting day! In addition Brynteg School hosted the BBC Now orchestral workshop in October, where 180 24 | seaside news

pupils from schools around the Borough joined Brynteg for a day of music. The day concluded with all musicians performing an accumulation of the day’s work. This event was very successful and enjoyable for all those involved. In other news pupils have been involved in a health and well-being week. The project was based around the health and well-being, diet and culture of countries that were taking part in the rugby world cup. To tie in with this theme the Sixth form organised a series of events and workshops for World Mental Health day. Well done to our pupils who raised £1031.19 for the Young Minds charity. Brynteg School would like to wish all your readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ST CLARE’S SCHOOL It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas already with rehearsals in full swing for Christmas plays and concerts and lots of festive trips planned. Grandparents and elderly residents living in the Porthcawl area attended the inaugural Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. A spokeswoman said: “We’re hosting this as part of our extra-curricular activities. We are extremely socially conscious and wanted to hold an event in the local community to encourage seniors to get out and about and interact with others.” The Dining Hall was miraculously transformed into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party with an inspired buffet, including sandwiches, sausage rolls and a delicious cream tea. Guests enjoyed music and singing from the pupils, a raffle and a very popular bingo session with fabulous prizes. Many guests without transport were picked up in the school minibuses. Save up to 50% off school fees with a Senior Sport or Academic Scholarship for entry to Year 7, Year 10 or Year 12 next September. Call (01656) 789966 for an informal chat or visit www.stclares-school.co.uk now. From the smallest in our Nursery to the tallest in our Sixth Form, pupils at St Clare’s would like to wish Seaside News readers a very Merry Christmas! School reports PORTHCAWL PRIMARY The term has really flown by. We’ve had a fun filled time with various visits, visitors and trips to support our learning. Our KS2 children (7 to 11 year olds) had the Rugby World Cup as their topic so visited the Cardiff Blues Stadium and Llanelli Scarlets Stadium. Everyone had great fun completing a tour, training session and meeting players. As part of the KS2 topic is about Health, children have recently completed St John’s Ambulance First Aid Training and are also learning to make healthy snacks with the help of the Warburton team. Meanwhile our Foundation Phase children (3 to 7 year olds) had a recent visit from Falconary UK to further enhance their topic ‘Into The Woods’. Jason and his dog taught everyone about owls and kookaburras. The children loved meeting and holding the birds. Christmas celebrations are almost here. We look forward to welcoming the residents of Newton Care Home to our Foundation Phase Concert Dress Rehearsal on Friday 13th December. Families and Friends can buy tickets from the school for further concerts on Monday 16th December 10am and Wednesday 18th December at 2pm. KS2 will hold a short Carol Concert at Gilgal Baptist Church on Wednesday 18th December at 5.45pm - everyone is welcome to join us. Finally, our Christmas Fayre is on Tuesday 17th December at 3.15pm please feel free to pop along. Jo Rowley (Head Teacher) Tel 01656 815660

YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR

Years 3, 4 and 5 are thoroughly enjoying their recycling project in partnership with ADA & Seaquest. Our Eco Committee thoroughly enjoyed their recent litter pick with Angela BCBC, Brian from Keep Wales Tidy and PCSOs Robey and Matthews. They’ve documented all of their finds, information which will be used alongside information gathered at Seaquest to present to pupils and governors on sustainability. Thank you to PCSO Couch for visiting to speak to the children on matters of safety and well done to Arwen, Eva, Kali, Lili, Maiwen, Megan, Olivia, Seren and Tegan on being appointed our Mini Police. Unfortunately the severe weather conditions over the past month have resulted in us having to postpone three of our netball and rugby. It was great however to play MCP last week. Foundation phase pupils have enjoyed visiting the local area and we would like to thank local shops and cafes for supporting and welcoming us each time. Four of our pupils thoroughly enjoyed soaking Mrs Dixon and Mr Lewis on the S4C programme ‘Caw-Od’. Many of the children have viewed this over and over on S4C Clic!! Thank you to the PTA who held a very successful, well attended Halloween disco. Children thoroughly enjoyed and we appreciate the funds raised. The PTA is now busy organising our Christmas fayre, which will be held 3.30 on Friday, November 22nd. You are all invited to attend. Sgwad ‘Sgwennu Writing Squad

THE BRIDGE

Welcome back to all at The Bridge and a very warm welcome to Ms Megan Mattravers, our new drama teacher. Our enrichment program has been successful with improving our student’s wellbeing. One of our enrichment sessions we partnered up with The Marine Conservation Society to clean up Pink Bay. During one of our walks B Leaf made a pleasant pumpkin donation to us. One of our very own teachers Mrs Mary Morriss is taking part in a cultural exchange to Uganda, where she will spend a week. Good luck with teaching the Ugandan students. The Bridge has participated in different charity events this term, such as raising £150 for MacMillan and donated food to the Food Bank, this reflects our commitment to Article27: You have the right to a good standard of living. Finally, we are wrapping up our boxes for the shoebox appeal this Christmas. Enjoy the forthcoming festive season. Ashton (year 9)

School reports CYNFFIG NEWS The start of the month, UK Parliament Week, saw pupils sample a taste of British politics. Our Student Cabinet presented assemblies, conducted quizzes and debates on a range of different topics varying from ‘Is abortion always justified?’ to ‘Is school uniform necessary?’ Our lively year 7 debate team also visited the Bridgend Council Chambers to debate, ‘Should animals be used for entertainment purposes?’ Anti-bullying Week celebrated diversity in fine style with pupils wearing odd socks. Our Anti- bullying Ambassadors also created a display full of Anti- bullying slogans from every form group to proudly show Cynffig’s united stand against bullying. Congratulations to staff and pupils who made ‘Children in Need’ a fantastic event. From fancy dress to sponge the teacher Cynffig raised over £780 pounds for this worthy cause. Congratulations too to our Music department whose school choir sang at the Sony Theatre Bridgend for the Bridge VIS annual concert and at KPC Christmas event. Our annual Christmas concert promises to be a heart-warming event with our choir, orchestra and soloists providing a fabulous festive evening. We welcome all friends and family to celebrate the season with us, please contact the school for details and tickets. Nadolig Llawen to you all and a happy healthy New Year. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL As we write this we are half way through the first term. I am delighted to say that Year 7’s have settled in very well. As part of the “Curriculum for Wales” Year 7 have embarked upon a term long project entitled “Our World”. This piece of work has been designed by our teachers to teach Porthcawl children what matters to them. As one Year 7 settles we plan to welcome the next, our open evening was a spectacular success and we look forward to the long series of transition events. Over the past and coming months the current Year 6 visit each department for a taster of what PCS has to offer. As we increase the children’s familiarity with our school anxiety levels drop and happy settled learners join our school. A particular area of interest is the ‘helping hands’ work, which helps our most anxious learners to settle. Anyone with an interest in the school may arrange a visit by calling 01656 774100. The Sixth Form Open Evening is planned for January. We have a track record of excellence in the Sixth Form and anyone interested should contact the school. Important Dates: Carol Service – All Saints Church 19th December @ 7.00pm Sixth Form Open Evening 15th January @ 6.00pm School Production of Sister Act 22nd – 25th January 2020 And finally a very Merry Christmas from all at PCS. 28 | seaside news

PIL PARLIAMENT WEEK

Pupils at Pil Primary School visited the Council Chambers in the Civic offices to debate whether animals should be used for entertainment purposes. This was part of a cluster approach to celebrate UK Parliament Week, which took place from 2nd to 8th November. The pupils were engaged in lengthy debate alongside pupils from schools in the cluster and were chaired by the Mayor of Bridgend, Stuart Baldwin. Throughout the week all pupils were empowered to get involved in discussions, voting, debates and relevant campaigns including litter in the community. A Casey-Haimes Deputy Head Teacher

WEST PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS What a busy month we have had at West Park! After saying “Thank you and Goodbye” to our visitors from Estyn in September (Look out for our Inspection Report), we threw ourselves, full force, into the Harvest celebrations. Year 3 and 4 had an amazing adventure at the Pumpkin Patch, harvesting their own pumpkins and making wonderful memories with their classmates. Celebrations culminated in a large donation to the Food Bank of tinned gifts, helping to feed families who are struggling in our local community. We have also had some super talented visitors who have inspired the pupils. Poet Ash visited and the pupils took part in workshops to create Shadorma and Haiku poems. The younger pupils were also encouraged to be creative and join in with a live instrumental and choral performance of ‘The Hopeless Pirate’ thanks to Claire Cressey. We have had an Early Years Unit Open Day, inviting prospective families to come and have a look at our wonderful indoor and outdoor learning environment. Watch out for the next one! Our Digital Leaders have visited Picton Court to promote intergenerational ICT learning with the residents. During National Anti-Bullying week the pupils have taken part in activities to raise awareness, such as, wearing odd socks for a day because “change starts with you.” Our cross-country team is doing well despite the weather with a great turn out at weekend meets. Rugby and Netball continues despite the dark evenings and rain! West Park pupils are resilient and waterproof! Samantha Bennet Leeanne Juliff

Local news MAYORS UPDATE

Over half way through my year as Mayor, and I have been overwhelmed by the support of our local community and its many charitable organisations, in turn I am trying to support and highlight the good work they do. For Halloween The Picton held a themed disco in support of our charities, and in September Finnegan’s fish bar hosted an event for us – a big thanks to both. In March 2020 my community fund raising committee is holding a very special evening at the Hi – Tide where we want to recognise those people who quietly get on and do things in our community without recognition or reward. The Mayors Community Awards scheme will soon be seeking your nominations; full details of eligibility and the nomination process will be published online via Facebook/Mayor of Porthcawl’s Community Fund, and also via a paper process at the town council offices in Mary Street. As you read this we will be approaching the festive season; I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very peaceful Christmas. Nadolig Llawen. GOOD NEWS ABOUT KENFIG NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE I was pleased to hear that Natural Resources Wales is in discussions with the Kenfig Corporation Trust over a long-term management lease for Kenfig National Nature Reserve. Bridgend County Borough Council has been working towards a management handover of the site for almost a full decade now, and has been supporting the trust as they seek to appoint a new organisation that can continue this work when we return the lease to them on 31 December 2019. The reserve is certainly an exceptional site in conservational terms. Its 1,300 acres of managed sand dune, wetland and coastline environments include the UK’s only population of the extremely rare fen orchid, while at 70 acres, the clear waters of Kenfig Pool remain the largest natural lake in South Wales. Natural Resources Wales are undertaking the necessary ‘due diligence’ checks after concluding that they are best placed to manage the conservation interests at the site, so I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who has worked at the reserve or who has volunteered there while it has been managed by the local council. The site is an important and much-loved destination for visitors and residents alike, and I am sure that it will continue to thrive. COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

CLUBS ARE WORKING WITH COUNCIL TO SAVE COMMUNITY SPORT I’d like to clarify the situation regarding sports pitches, playing fields and pavilions. The council has been subsidising these by up to 80%, but can no longer afford this while also prioritising education and care services in the face of an imminent £36m funding cut. Our solution is to work with clubs and town and community councils so they can manage facilities directly via community asset transfers. This has been a success for Bryncethin Rugby Club where £500,000 funding has transformed their pavilion into a refurbished community hub, and FC Porthcawl and Porthcawl United also have plans to transform their pavilion as part of a five-year renewable lease on Rest Bay playing fields. We have made the asset transfer process easier, and are at various stages of talks with local clubs. At the time of writing, eight transfers are almost complete, 18 are under development, and more than 20 expressions of interest have been received. A £1m fund is supporting the transfer process, and a new annual fund will support the mini, junior and youth teams who make up two-thirds of all clubs. No club which engages with the transfer process will face having to meet the fee increase – find out more at the council website. MAYOR’S CITIZENSHIP AWARDS REWARD OUR LOCAL HEROES!

COLD-SNAP ELECTION?

Do you know someone who regularly goes the extra mile for others, is an outstanding charity fundraiser or has helped put the area on the map in 2019? The Mayor of Bridgend County Borough is asking local residents to put forward their nominations of individuals, groups or businesses that are worthy of a Mayor’s Citizenship Award. Organised by Bridgend County Borough Council, the awards are open to people who live in the county borough as well as local groups and businesses. The deadline for Mayor’s Citizenship Award nominations is Friday 24 January 2019, and the award winners will be honoured at an event hosted by the Mayor at the Civic Offices in Bridgend in March 2019. Please visit the Mayor’s pages at www.bridgend. gov.uk to complete a nomination form online. I’d also like to congratulate pupils at Corneli Primary School, Ysgol Y Ferch o’r Sgêr and the Integrated Children’s Centre for offering a helping hand to infants at Mynydd Cynffig Primary after a burst pipe left their classrooms without heat and in need of extensive repairs. The infants faced several weeks of disruption, but their fellow pupils rallied round to make room for them while the work was underway. Well done! COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

For the first time in nearly 100 years we find ourselves in the middle of a December General Election campaign. It is novel to see rosettes on thick winter coats and campaign literature held in mittens. Elections are incredible feats of organisation even with a normal, long-scheduled timetable. With this being a snap election at possibly the most difficult time of year, officials working in the local authority and nationally toil tirelessly to ensure the machinery of democracy keeps working, and we owe them our thanks. Many people are casting postal votes to mitigate against the effects of early nights and winter weather, and the Royal Mail has said it will prioritise postal votes during this busy December period. It is worth remembering that if you have forgotten to send off your postal vote, or if you are worried it won’t arrive in time, you can still hand it in at the polling station on election day- you haven’t missed your chance to have your voice heard. And irrespective of politics, it is important to stay safe should the weather be inclement when you cast your vote on December 12. Finally, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Poets corner CHRISTMAS The streets are ablaze with colour Decorations up in the hall Never ending our Christmas shopping And parties and carols for all But above all the bustle and hustle Have we heard the angels’ song? Or paused to think of the Christ Child In Bethlehem’s busy throng? How He left the glory of heaven To be born in a cattle stall Bringing hope to the least and the lowest Good tidings of joy for us all? So in all our bustle and hustle Our feasting and families and fun Let us not forget our Saviour And the purpose for which he is come Take time to worship the Christ Child God’s gift of his only Son. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

I KNOW WHERE YOU DIED I know where you died I know the time you died I know how you died. You were so far away I was not there I did not hold your hand I did not kiss you goodbye I did not close your eyes. Your last words were not your voice Your last were not spoken. If I could give you my body my life I would gladly take yours and die No sadness nor pain can change this. I am here now wishing I was with you We’re are small matter in this world No one cares for us, the unimportant ones Another death a forgotten name. My darling child I will not forget you You will go on living until I die Malcolm Price, Porthcawl

CALLED TOWARDS THE HEAVENLY LIGHT When we walk along this lonely road, Trying to prove our worth, To gain our experience and wealth, Whilst we are on this earth. We will meet many people, Who will change our path, Many will make you cry one day, Whilst others will make you laugh. Life’s journey is your experience, Whether it’s Religious or Spirituality from afar, Some wrong decisions will be made, But they will make you who you are. Relationships made and often broken, Sickness, Illness and poor health, Dealing with these issues, Will give you spiritual wealth. Throughout life we often gain opportunities, To make the wrong things right, Until our final day arrives, And we are called towards the heavenly light ! David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

CHRISTMAS Christmas lights shining in the night, Christmas lights nice and bright, what a pretty sight. Christmas lights all over the hedge, and people riding on their sledge. Christmas lights all rainbow, all pretty in the snow.

Why is life so hard on us, I’d really like to know, When all the things we love so much, Are vices that have to go! That chocolate cake and ice cream, That plate of curly fries, Why do they taste so yummy, As the fat piles on our thighs? When we are getting stressed out, A ciggie will help us chill, The nicotine will work its magic, But the tar will make us ill! And when the weekend gets here, And we go out on the pop, We have such fun as the drinks go down, And we don’t know when to stop! But come next day we find out, It wasn’t so clever to do, Our head is banging, our stomach’s sore, We think we’ve got the flu! So this is what I’m asking you, Do we carry on the trend? This unhealthy downward spiral... Hell yes! It’s too nice to end! Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

FUN AFTERNOON AT THE MASONIC HOME

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL

Manager Mrs Alison Aberdeen from the Masonic Care Home Prince of Wales Court, presented a cheque of £280.50 from all staff and residents to Mr Keith Duggan relating to a charity walk event organised by Entertainment’s manager Mrs Mandy Kilpatrick- Evans. Members of the Porthcawl Stroke Club, linked in partnership with the residence of the Masonic lodge home for a fun afternoon, which involved a Belly Dancing group called the Seren Arabi, (six ladies), who give dance routines of an Eastern origin; Arabic expressive dance, which emphasizes complex movements of the torso. Depending what country and region, both costume and dance style can vary. Joining in the dance routine was Porthcawl Stroke Club Chairman Mr Keith Duggan; Angela and Hannah two staff members of care home, who were up for the challenge! Shimmy On; It turned the afternoon into an hilarious dance session, with Graham on the drums, Mary and others making a noise with the Rraqi, Sharqi; a triangular hip scarf of coins, beads, fringing and lots of sequins, creating a glamorous appearance on the dancers. Also the Stroke members had an enjoyable lunch at the home, so our thanks go to Chef Dave and his team of caters and all participants. Anyone wishing to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club, contact Keith and Mary Duggan on (01656) 773376

In October we dealt with 6 logged incidents and monitored a further 12. We have recorded 78 incidents to date, an increase of 25% on 2018 statistics. Recently there were 3 incidents involving persons getting stuck in the soft mud at the marina entrance. This is a tempting short cut at low water, but currently there is deep, soft mud in the entrance channel which can be dangerous, if you are unaware of this. We also reported incidents involving surfers, kitesurfers and windsurfers to the Coastguard. Thankfully all incidents resulted in a positive outcome. Our trainees have made excellent progress so far and are already joining mentored watches, as a third pair of eyes in the tower. We wish them well as they progress through the structured training. The poor weather during October resulted in us logging and monitoring 559 vessels, a decline on previous months. We will be attending the Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild Christmas Fayre at Trinity Church on November 29th with a stand promoting Porthcawl NCI. Also in November we have our annual assessment to ensure we meet the high standards required by UK Coastguard, to remain a Search and Rescue asset and retain our “Declared Facility Status.” Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

Deadline date for the January 2020 issue is: Tuesday 10th December

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH At this time of the year angels are big news. There’s Gabriel showing up to say to Mary, “Hail, O favoured one!” There are angels perched on Christmas trees. We hear of choirs of angels filling the night sky to serenade shepherds. In ancient times, things were different. Believing in angels or not wasn’t their problem. Their problem was a world filled with angels, each one offering a different menu of blessings and curses. Their problem wasn’t, “Do angels exist?” but, “How in the world do I figure out which angel is active here, and what do I do to get on its good side?” Especially at Christmas, we may be able to relate to this. Life can seem fragmented into a thousand pieces, with conflicting loyalties claiming us. We’re pulled here and there, frazzled by our efforts to honour the work gods, placate the shopping deities, humour the family angel, and worship the food gods while not betraying the fitness powers. To people trying to negotiate this crazy time, my advice is: ‘Remember what, and who Christmas is all about!’ And, as real angels always say, “Don’t be afraid.” Happy Christmas. Club features NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

Pictured are six models who took part in our recent Fashion Show at the Talbot, including our oldest model in the village! – Mrs Joyce Williams. The staff from Klass, the Pines, Bridgend, worked hard to match up outfits for a relaxed day out, another set of outfits for a more formal lunch with friends, and yet another outfit of sparkle, the type of outfit we could take on a cruise, or celebrate New Year. The models enjoyed themselves, strutting along our catwalk, whilst I did the voice over, giving details and prices of the garments to our audience. Everyone enjoyed themselves especially when told they qualified for a 20% discount from Klass for having attended the Show. The first two weeks in December will be busy at the Talbot with several diners’ Christmas lunches and bingo parties, and again a party for Cwtch Cynffig. We then officially shut shop from Thursday, 19th December until Friday, 3rd January. So, from the Talbot a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you, hope to see you in 2020. TRINITY CHURCH At the time of writing we are looking forward to a busy Advent and Christmas season. We held a very successful pumpkin themed Messy Church in October with many children enjoying the fun. Most wore fancy dress and they made bracelets, played musical games, decorated biscuits and drew pictures. Our finance chairman entertained them with a story and the afternoon concluded with a tasty meal. There will be a children’s party on Sunday 15th December. Messy Church is held from 3-5pm with activities including painting, arts &crafts, games, stories, songs and a meal. This is a free activity, which runs monthly. Our Trinity Music Group will present a Christmas musical by Joe Parks called “King Forever” on December 15th at 10.30. Please support us and enjoy the music. These are the Christmas Services: Nativity and Mince Pie Service Sunday 22nd December at 10.30. Christmas Eve Family Service at 6pm Midnight Service commencing 11.15 on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day Service at 10.00 Christingle Service on Sunday 29th at 10.30 Full details of all our events and services are on our website and Facebook page. We are delighted to welcome visitors and new members to our church. There is a chance to chat after the service when coffee is served. RINGING BY NUMBERS The Coity Bell-ringers’ Autumn Outing was a resounding success for a number of reasons. Here are just some of them. ONE . . . dog, Bruno, who is remarkably tolerant of ringing but whose favourite method is clearly Reverse Uppingham (a bellringing joke, sorry!). TWO . . . bands – we were joined by ringers from Llansteffan in Carmarthenshire. Also two extremely distracting clock mechanisms (in the first two towers). THREE . . . towers: St David, Laleston; St Bridget, St Brides Major and St Mary, Coity, each with six bells and each set lighter than the previous one! FOUR . . . nationalities amongst the ringers: Welsh, Swedish, Irish and English. FIVE . . . methods rung: Grandsire, Plain Bob, Reverse Canterbury Pleasure, St Simon and All Saints. TOO MANY TO COUNT . . . sausage rolls (thanks, Lyn!), which tasted even better without the rain and wind to which we had become accustomed on previous outings. Bell ringing is a fun, sociable activity for all ages from 10 upwards. If you’d like to add yourself to our numbers next year contact Fred Custerson (01656 659741) or to find a tower closer to home go to www.llanmon.org.uk

CHRISTMAS CAROLCADE Our Christmas Carolcade is still going strong after so many years. On four evenings just before Christmas time, we visit much of Porthcawl with our musical sleigh accompanied, of course, by Mother and Father Christmas. It is wonderful to see the children’s faces when they meet Santa and Mrs Claus. Christmas Tree Festival Each December, we run a Christmas tree festival at All Saints’ Church in Porthcawl. The church is filled with Christmas trees from local organisations in Porthcawl. Each organisation supplies and decorates their own tree. The result is quite spectacular and attracts people from all around. We also organise entertainment on several evenings i.e. Young Musicians Competition and the Festival Choir concert. The prime aim of the festival is to benefit the community and allow us all to come together to celebrate Christmas. Street collections Whatever the weather, on three Saturdays in December, the club holds collections in John Street. Our Christmas sleigh is on display and Christmas carols are played throughout the events. A big thank you goes to the people of Porthcawl who so generously support Rotary in raising much needed funds for our charitable causes. Robert Lee

Club features OLIVE – DOG OF THE MONTH

Olive is a beautiful one-year-old old Lurcher who is full of life. She is a bright girl and is eager to learn new things, so further training would be beneficial for her. Olive does socialise with other dogs and could live with another canine friend in her new home, as long as they are also calm and well socialised. She will need plenty of off-lead exercise to burn off that excess energy. Olive is looking for an adult only home with experienced dog owners who can continue to keep her physically and mentally stimulated. She doesn’t mind traveling in the car and loves to explore new places. Olive is not used to being left on her own, so the amount of time would need to be built up gradually. If you’re looking for a fit, active dog, then Olive could be the one for you. For more information on Olive, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. You can also visit our website at www. dogstrust.org.uk

PORTHCAWL VETERANS HUB Porthcawl Veterans Hub began life in November 2018 as the brainchild of local Army veteran (and now charity President) John Fulcher. He had a vision that there may be a place in the community for a group offering support to the local population of ex-military personnel and their families. Thanks to assistance from Porthcawl Town Council we are now a registered charity with a regular meeting place. We meet in the old Griffin Park Wellbeing Hub every Saturday morning, where we offer tea, coffee, bacon rolls, and chat. All ex-service personnel, serving armed forces and families are welcome to join us and hopefully become members of the charity. The hub offers peer-to-peer support, networking and guidance. If we can’t help we can signpost you to someone who can. In November members attended the Remembrance Sunday March and services where we laid a wreath. They also attended the service at the RAF Stormy Down memorial. We are currently planning social events, fundraisers and potential trips for 2020. Come and join us on Saturday mornings 9.00-12.00 in the building next to the tennis courts in Griffin Park. We’ll give you a warm welcome! Louise Magenty Membership Secretary

U3A COMMUNITY SUPPORT Porthcawl U3A is celebrating 25 years as part of the fabric of our community and to mark the occasion it has donated a bench to support visitors to the town’s new Medical Centre. The new bench was unveiled at a ceremony attended by some of the founders of one of the earliest, biggest and most flourishing U3As in Wales. Chair Sally Corbett expressed the hope this would be a place people would sit and chat whilst waiting for their transport helping to make patients feel comfortable, and symbolising the support offered by U3A to the community by bringing people together, promoting friendships and helping to combat the sadness of isolation. Receiving the bench on behalf of Porthcawl Medical Centre senior partner Dr Peter Evans thanked Porthcawl U3A for its years of service to community cohesion and spoke of the inestimable value it provides in helping to combat loneliness, promote mutual support and social interaction. For these reasons “we as a practice encourage people to join Porthcawl U3A and actively direct them to it” said Dr Evans. We wish our community greetings of the season and to remind all that a warm and friendly Porthcawl U3A welcome awaits in 2020 with 100s of activities, events, interest groups, and excursions. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES A December parliamentary election ! Who should I vote for? Who do I trust to run the country? Can I have faith in any of the political parties, leaders or candidates to do more that act in self-interest or follow a narrow ideological agenda? Should my vote be cast on the basis of national or local issues? Who would Jesus vote for? Some say religion and politics don’t mix, but I can’t leave my faith and conscience behind when I cast my ballot. I must vote for the candidate who is closest to Christian values. Political idealism promises us the world yet always fails to deliver. Political reality is doing the best you can in complicated circumstances. No wonder Jesus taught us to pray to our heavenly Father, ‘Thy kingdom come’. Christians believe our world’s problems with never be truly solved until Jesus returns. The first coming of Christmas promises the second coming of the Kingdom. So the early church cried out in prayer, in Aramaic, ‘Marantha’ (1 Cor.16:22) ‘come soon Lord’. May you know the joy and peace of Jesus whatever the outcome of the elections. Worship Christ this Christmas, give your allegiance to Him. Happy Christmas. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My husband has consulted a solicitor and I have received a letter asking me to agree to a Divorce on the basis that we have been separated for over 2 years. We split up 3 years ago and he is now living with another woman. I really don’t want to make it easy for him and am aggrieved that he is divorcing me. Do I have to agree to the Divorce on this basis? Answer:Clearly, your husband has moved on and you may not have which can be hard. Filing for Divorce on the fact of a 2 years’ separation with consent is the most civil way you can get divorce as no one is blamed for the marriage breakdown. Very often, the parties will split the Divorce costs equally. Your husband’s solicitors require your written agreement to the Divorce on this “fact”. If you refuse to provide your consent for whatever reason, this will not prevent your husband from filing for Divorce as he can then do so on the fact of your alleged behaviour. Whilst you may not believe your conduct has been unreasonable, it will not be difficult for your husband to gather together reasons he can cite. This may be a very bitter pill for you then to swallow as you will be blamed for the marriage breakdown and could face having to pay your husband’s legal costs for the Divorce which will easily be in excess of £1000 plus VAT. Therefore, please think carefully about your motivation for holding up the Divorce when clearly there is no prospect of reconciliation. It is always better to deal with matters in a civil, constructive and cost effective way and to try and retain an amicable relationship with the former spouse with whom you may have children. Understanding the Probate process Losing a loved one can be a confusing and difficult time. Not only will you deal with grief, but often you are faced with dealing with their financial affairs. We would suggest you establish early on if the deceased left a Will, if so, who they appointed as the Executors of the Will. The Executor(s) are the people appointed to administer the estate, this will include making initial decisions such as registering the death and organising the funeral. If the deceased did not make a Will, then under the Rules of Intestacy there is a list of persons in propriety who are entitled to Administer the Estate and take care of these decision. The Executors have a duty to notify all the financial institutions where the deceased held investments, accounts and policies of the death, update insurances especially in respect of the deceased’s property and notify all utility providers. Depending on the value of the deceased assets it is likely that the Executors will need to apply for a Grant of Probate. This is a document that allows the Executor to take control of the deceased’s assets, pay their debts and begin the process of transferring the estate to those who are due to inherit. Whilst it is possible for the Executor to apply for Probate themselves, often lay people prefer to utilise a specialist probate solicitor to assist. Before you apply for a Grant of Probate, the Executors or solicitors appointed to assist, will gather information on the estate’s value, this information is then detailed on an Inheritance Tax form to HMRC - whether tax is due or not. It is advisable to instruct a solicitor to assist if the estate value is likely to cross the £325,000 inheritance tax threshold or if assets are held in complex arrangements such as trusts, if there is no will, or if the will is contested. This time frame for obtaining the Grant of Probate depends on how soon you receive the valuations and balances of the accounts, whether inheritance tax is payable, any mistakes made in forms, and how busy the Probate Registry office are at that time. Once Probate is granted the executors will begin to call in the funds, sell or transfer property, discharge any debts, account to HMRC in respect of any tax payable and then administer the estate according to the Will. WHAT HAPPENS TO PETS AFTER SEPARATION? Some may find it bizarre that people pay lawyers to argue over what is going to happen to their beloved pet after separation or divorce. However for others, whose pet is the main focus of life outside of work, this issue is very pertinent. In the eyes of the law, pets are chattels – much like the contents of the house or personal possessions. Proof of ownership will need to be considered. Who purchased the pet? Who pays for the food and insurance? Pets are sometimes given as gifts and in that situation, if there is clear evidence that the pet was gifted, ownership will have been transferred to the beneficiary of the gift. Sometimes pets are purchased from joint funds, and in that situation a future owner will need to be determined. It may be wise to consider who is best able to care for the family pet post separation, for example if one party works part time and lives in a house with a garden, it may be best to take a pragmatic view and allow the pet to live with that party. Alternatively, a shared care arrangement may be the best solution. There is no law governing the sharing of care of pets as there is for children. Therefore, this will only work if both parties agree. It is increasingly common to include provisions in Pre-Nuptial agreements relating to pets. The advantage of a ‘pet-nup’ is that the parties will have the opportunity to consider what should happen to pets if they separate without any high emotions or feelings of revenge clouding their view after separation. If this issue is something which may apply to you, you should take legal advice to find out which factors will be considered in your case. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Women’s institutions SKER WI- CHARITY FASHION SHOW

NEWTON WI

Friends of Sker WI hosted a charity event on 28th October at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village. Showcasing clothing from Samantha B, Ewenny, the fashion show invited Sker WI members and guests to enjoy refreshments and a glass of wine whilst browsing for that special occasion outfit or maybe even that Christmas party dress. The event was well supported and raised money for local charities The Stroke Club, Coastwatch and Alzheimer’s Society. A presentation afternoon is planned for 20th November when representatives of all three organisations will be invited for tea and cakes and receive their share of funds raised. Sker WI meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7pm. We meet at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village. Visitors are always welcome, so why not come along and say hello. You can also find us on Facebook at SkerWI@nottagevillage Christine Beynon Sker WI

Our November meeting was very busy with GFWI and local WI news. Arrangements for the Christmas events are well in hand. The evening speaker was John Sheen, who gave a talk on ‘The twelve days of Christmas’ entitled ‘Christmas Crackers’; it was a fun talk full of Christmas spirit. In October we attended the GFWI Annual Dinner at the High Tide Inn. We were entertained by Owen Money and his band. The evening went with a swing, enjoyable music and lots of laughter. In October 30 members were invited to Hotters Shoes, Cardiff. We were welcomed with a buffet and wine, there was an interesting talk given followed by a game of Bingo. Also the opportunity to purchase early Christmas gifts. Congratulations this month goes to Pearl on her 80th birthday; we wish her a very happy day. In November the Newton WI ‘Golden Girls’ entertained the Porthcawl Stroke Club, we hope every one there enjoyed. M. Freeman

LALESTON WI Our W.I. met on 7th November and 24 members had attended various items of interest were pointed out from the County Letter. Our W.I. was to send a delegate to next years A.G.M. in The Albert Hall and all members were invited to put their name forward. We were having an Annual Luncheon on 18th February 2020 and members were asked for suggestions for a venue. Luncheon Club this month would be on 18th November at Poco Poco, Bridgend 12.30 for 1pm. A letter had been received from Bridgend Riding for the disabled thanking us for our donation. Our next meeting was to be on December 5th where would start with a Carol Service in St. David’s Church at 7pm and then back to The Blandy Hall for a buffet with food supplied by all members. Our speaker for the evening was then introduced Mr John Sheen who gave us a very humorous interpretation of his take on Christmas Crackers which had the members roaring with laughter. A vote of thanks was given by Christine Rees. The raffle was won by Katherine Nelson. Visitors are always welcome to join us for an insight into W.I. life we meet on the first Thursday of each month at The Blandy Hall Laleston at 7.15pm. PORTHCAWL WI We met on 26th of September with a few new members welcomed. We listened to Joyce James who thrilled us with the history of Woolworths. It brought back many happy memories to all of us. Some of our members had even worked for the company. Rose Jones joined us on 24th of October; she showed us her homemade ceramics. There was a tremendous display of items that she had made with an opportunity to purchase items at the end. Rose kindly offered to teach anyone how her hobby was done. In October we visited Gareth’s kitchens in Lampeter. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the demonstrations of savory and sweet dishes as well as his flower arranging with many tips given. We enjoyed plenty of delicious food together with tea, coffee and soft drinks. Some members were lucky enough to win the raffle and took home the many floral displays. The Christmas lunch is to be held on 21st of November at the Atlantic Hotel. Afternoon tea has been booked in December at Broomwagon for members of the book club. Our monthly meetings are held on the fourth Thursday at 2 pm in the church hall of All Saints, come and join us. Sue 01656 713124 or Anne 07811479405

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Coming to the end of another busy year for the guild and still going strong! Our groups have all been meeting. Our small but very competitive indoor games group enjoys its sessions. Much better than computer games! The craft group raises money from the sale of its beautiful cards and our monthly lunches are always popular. Our October meeting was a craft afternoon with everyone trying their hand at something new. Many members enjoyed a concert at Burry Port with Swansea Federation and we contributed to the entertainment. Our meeting this month is on December 11th, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when John Sheen will be giving us his views on Christmas. To be followed by a splendid tea! May we wish you all a very happy Christmas and make a New Year resolution to visit us next year. We have a coffee morning on January 24th at Trinity Church Hall so come along and get to know us! Deadline date for the January 2020 issue is: Tuesday 10th December BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS We met on 23rd October at the Heronston Hotel for our monthly Supper/Speaker meeting. After enjoying an excellent dinner it was time to welcome Mark and Susan Rees to hear of their recent adventures in far off Fiji. When Mark and Sue retired and found themselves in an ‘empty nest’ following the departure of their family they decided to investigate travel options with a difference. After doing some research Susan attended an Open Day calling for volunteers to travel to Vinaka on one of the Fijian islands. There they would join a team of fellow volunteers working for a Charitable Trust calling for help on a variety of projects including Research and Education of Marine Environments including Clam Care and Coral Conservation and School Education of local children. With Susan’s experience working in education at home she welcomed an opportunity to go into the classroom and lend a hand with younger pupils in need of a little extra help. Mark was attracted to the prospect of working in the marine environment but first he had to achieve qualifications in order to undertake required SCUBA diving. Determined not to be prevented from his plan he undertook training in a local swimming pool here in South Wales in order to gain his PADI accreditation enabling him to undertake SCUBA diving. The couple then travelled to VINAKA and joined a team of volunteers. They shared their experiences with the club showing lots of slides and relating many amusing and interesting tales. The meeting chaired by Christine, minutes read by Katherin and WI business discuss by Enid. Our Christmas party was organised and invitations from several local WI s to attend their Christmas fairs were read out. We had a good day and despite the weather there were a lot of people attending. Next month it’s our Christmas party so look out Enid is once again entertaining us with her famous pass the parcel. Christine Callaghan

Business & finance CHRISTMAS ALREADY? – YOU BET.... WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN

WHAT ARE ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS?

Well we’re at the end of 2019 already and what a year it’s been, what with B****T, Parliamentary in-fighting on an unprecedented scale, the economy and businesses waiting for certainty, interest-rate lows (that’s the good news for mortgage payers) knife crime a national problem, unprecedented floods, company closures, retailers failing, NHS pressures, Wales finishing fourth in the Rugby World Cup and a December election, to name just a few. So what awaits us in 2020, especially around the question of money? Now, this isn’t a column given to venting its pleasure or displeasure one way or another, rather I prefer to keep it calm and measured, at least that way we have a chance of coping with what life throws at us, often completely unexpectedly. And that’s how it is in the financial world, where things are sometimes difficult (like getting on the mortgage ladder as a first-time buyer or trying to find some interest or growth on your savings in retirement, perhaps) but balanced with many good things, such as retirement sector solutions, many of which didn’t exist until recently and very competitive life cover for young(er) families to protect themselves against unexpected situations. Despite the ups and downs this year, it’s been one of our best in terms of the number of clients we’ve looked after and especially pleasing being the growing numbers of new clients who have kindly used our services. Our satisfaction is born of Client satisfaction - they go hand in hand. So, with it being the Festive period now, we thought it a good idea to offer something to everyone to celebrate the end of this year and the start of the next. Between 01 December 2019 and 31 January 2020, we’re offering a free Will for every financial or mortgage review we conduct on your behalf, so you can either update a current Will or make one for the first time if that’s the case. If you already have a Will and don’t need to change it, you can still benefit, as this offer will also stand for every Lasting Power of Attorney we are requested to arrange of behalf of Clients during the same period. So, a thank you to Clients old and new and let’s hope that we all come through the current end of year in a good place and look forward to a healthy, happy and prosperous 2020. The number’s the same as ever, 01656 782545. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to everyone.

If you’re all stocked up on the usual investments like ISA’s, Pensions, Bonds etc and have cash doing virtually nothing in a deposit account then this might be for you. You can invest in a myriad of things but the returns are questionable and not covered by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Antiques Road Trip on BBC2 is a great example of artefacts you can buy but to sell on immediately can lead to disastrous results. It’s always best to buy and hold as you have time for the item to grow in value. Paintings by known artists could be worth exploring and you have the work to enjoy on your wall whilst it increases in value. Take for example our own Kyffin Williams. One of his landscapes just sold at Rogers & Jones auctioneers for £25,000 but you could have bought it from The Albany Gallery Cardiff 20 years ago for a fraction of that price. Remember that gallery prices include up to 50% commission so don’t expect a quick buck. The best test of an artist’s fair value is at an auction as you’ll know how much interest there is and the dealing charges are reasonable. Shani Rees-James is one of Wales’s best-known living artists and her work continues to attract buyers but more importantly her work draws great interest at auction, which is a good sign, prices start at £5,000. There’s an artist nearer to home you could see at his ‘Studio 18’ Pontycymmer, famed for his ‘Running Away With The Hairdresser’. It’s Kevin Sinnott of course; his prices are very reasonable and would make a fine Christmas present! If you want to get on the art collectors ladder and don’t have much to spend then drawings and prints are worth exploring, then watercolours and finally oils whilst costing more will make more over time. There are of course so many other alternatives to art that could take your fancy such as stamp collecting, gold coins, memorabilia, autographs, rugby shirts, wine, antique furniture, children’s toys and big boys toys in classic cars! Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

Our club membership continues to grow and it is lovely to meet all the new faces at our monthly talks. Last month we had a quiz night, which was great fun and a nice get together. This was followed by a fund raising coffee and minced pies event where there were a wide range of cards and gifts for sale. This month we are looking forward to our annual Christmas get together when we all enjoy festive food and fun. There is not a great deal that can be done on the garden at this time of year. Even though the shortest day will soon be upon us it still seems to be gloomy for weeks to come. However it is important to keep an eye on the plot just to check that all is well and secure – particularly before stormy weather is forecast! It is also prudent to check that plants being protected from frost are securely wrapped up. Don’t forget to lag outside pipes and drain them if possible. Then there is little else to do other than settle down with next years’ catalogues and plan all those colourful schemes for the seasons to come. Joyce Pegg New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk or email EnqLGC@gmail.com

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Our AGM was quite well attended this year, 24 members making the effort. The meeting was followed by a gardening quiz set by the ever-entertaining Mrs Sheena Crossley. All of us mistook the gooseberry sawfly caterpillar for that of the cabbage white. But all of us got Santa’s gardening tool ‘ Hoe Hoe Hoe’! It has been another very successful year. All six outings were fully booked and profitable. We are discussing how to give priority booking to members. Our stores also had a very successful year, our volunteers soldiering on despite advancing years. We would welcome help from some of our younger, more able members. Perhaps members’ sons and daughters, or even grandchildren could help if they show an interest in gardening. As a result of our efforts we will be making our usual generous donations to many local charities. On the 10th December we are having our Christmas meeting with a demonstration of Christmas Arrangements demonstrated by Mrs Judith Orphan who will also be baking a Celebration cake for the raffle. The theme of the arrangements is ‘On the Seventh day of Christmas’. A Merry Christmas to you all. Frank Fulgoni

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY We are a friendly group of about 35 members who meet on alternate Wednesday evenings at Awel Y Mor Community Centre from 7pm. We have regular social events and club outings as well as tuition in flower arranging and monthly displays by trained demonstrators. During November we had our Open Evening at the Pavilion where we were entertained by Coral Gardner. She performed to a packed room and created some beautiful Christmas floral displays. We have also been busy making a Christmas Tree for the festival at Margam Park. We are hoping to adapt this to use at the Rotary Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church in December. 12 of our members enjoyed a wonderful day out in Brecon last month where we attended the Area Day competition and watched Tom Hodge’s amazing displays. Further trips are planned for the spring. Our last meeting before Christmas will be our Christmas dinner on 11th December. We will start back on January 22nd with a practice night making church flower arrangements. We welcome visitors and new members and no previous experience of flower arranging is necessary. Further information and details are available on our Facebook page or telephone 07581 048448. Alison Thomas, Club Secretary

CEFN CIBWR GARDENING CLUB December is a quiet month in the garden, with the daylight fading we approach the shortest day of the year, the wintery weather can be bitterly cold - yet strikingly beautiful! There are still jobs to do; it’s a care and repair month! Mend any wooden structures, benches, fences, sheds and trellises, then treat with preservatives so they’re all posh for the spring. Group containers of shrubs and bedding plants together in a sheltered spot, clustering them helps protect the root systems from frost damage. Dig over borders (if it’s not too wet) and pile manure on top letting the worms and frost break up the clods of soil (It’s called delegating!) Resist the temptation to prune hydrangeas before spring, the dead flower head protects the swelling bud further down the stem – bless them! We are having a Christmas Disco and buffet in Cefn Social Club, 7th December, £5.00 a ticket, come, eat, drink and bop with the best! Did you know, the wrappers from Roses and Quality Street sweets are made of cellulous, derived from wood pulp, so don’t chuck them – compost them! Remember you have till December 2020 to make good your New Year resolutions! Happy Christmas! Chris Early

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER The Christmas festivities are well underway now and we thought of a way you can help those going through treatment throughout the month of January 2020. Why don’t you donate what you would spend on Christmas Cards to Cost of Cancer to help cancer patients pay their January heating bills? There are numerous ways you can donate. You can either go onto our website and click one of the donate buttons, we also have a donate button on our Facebook page or you can do it the oldfashioned way and send us a cheque. It’s important for cancer patients to stay warm whilst they’re going through treatment for cancer. So please send your Christmas wishes via the many different social media platforms and donate that money to Cost of Cancer and you’ll be helping so many people this winter. Another way of helping with those January bills is to register for our brand-new challenge. It’s called Step Up For January, and what we’d like you to do is to sign up and walk 12,000 steps every day in January. This adds up to 372,000 throughout the month or it could be like walking from Swansea to London or Manchester to Cardiff. It’s also a fantastic way of getting fitter after Christmas. You could get your friends and family to sponsor you, we have our Wonderful.org page, which makes it super easy for people to donate. You’ll get a water bottle and a neck buff to keep you warm. So please do get in touch to register, registration fee is £25. Go to costofcancer.org.uk. All that’s left is for me to say, Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year. Nicky, Emma & Cath

PLASTIC POLLUTION A number of chemicals found in plastic products are known to act as endocrine disruptors. Some of the most pervasive and well known include phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA). As the harms of BPA have become more widely known many companies have started replacing it with other chemicals. However, these replacement chemicals also have no safety record, and as time goes on, we’re finding they’re just as hazardous as BPA. A recent study showed that 97.5% of children and adolescents had detectable levels of BPA in their urine; 87.8% had BPS; and 55.2% had BPF. All three chemicals correlated with an increased risk for obesity, even after the researchers controlled for caloric intake. A scientific review found BPB has endocrine disruptive effects; it affected reproductive function, damaging sperm and lowering egg production, lowered testosterone production and had estrogenic activity, “similar to or greater than BPA” For the second year in a row, The Coca-Cola Co. was found to be the most polluting brand in a global audit of plastic trash. Coca-Cola is responsible for more plastic litter than the next top three polluters combined. Read more at www.mercola.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

THE FIVE PRECEPTS IN BUDDHISM In Buddhism, there are the Five Precepts (pañcaila): personal commitments to refrain from intentional killing, stealing, sexual abuse, harmful speech and use of intoxicants. These may sound really basic and boring, hardly a sublime vision of the transcendent. They’re not that decorative or grand. But the transcendent point is not what they look like — but what they call forth, what it takes to keep them, and the effects that they have on your life. Speaking truth and avoiding gossip lifts the mind out of many scummy habits, and causes you to associate with trustworthy people. Avoiding alcohol keeps your mind bright and opens up more time in your life: you’re not violating your mind. It’s this understanding of the value of long-term effects over superficial appeal that makes these precepts special and valuable. If most people kept even most of the five precepts most of the time, there would be an end to so much misery in the world. They are to be practised with a sense of truly valuing one’s own mind, one’s own body and the context of the people one lives with. With these precepts, we extend that sense of respect and regard towards all creatures, so that we impart value to this realm that we share with others. (To be continued…) Neville Evans

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR The choir recently sang at the Remembrance Sunday service at All Saints Church. This year we performed Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is my shepherd’, an arrangement better known as the theme from ‘Vicar of Dibley’. A wreath was laid on behalf of the choir by Haydn Wheeler, long serving choir member who also served in Cyprus with the Royal Engineers. This event holds dear to the choir, especially the many ex-servicemen in our ranks. The choir is currently practising hard for the upcoming festive celebrations including, Carol Services at the Masonic Home, the Stroke Club Carol Concert, the RNLI Carol Service, our charity evening at the Globe and our Arlington Church Carol Service. In addition to our regular concerts, this year we’re performing carols at the new Porthcawl Health Centre. A place many of us know only too well! The choir is looking forward to next year, when we celebrate our 40th Anniversary. We are in the healthy position of having attracted a number of new members this year and the choir is at its strongest for a long time A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our loyal supporters and readers of Seaside News. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Filming on ‘The Mystery of the Llandow Air Disaster’ is due to begin next February and last until May, after which there will be several weeks of post-production, and the one thing that has become very apparent to me during my months of research is the general lack of awareness amongst the population in this part of the country that it ever happened. Nevertheless, in March 1950 the village of Sigingstone, near Llandow aerodrome, was the scene of what was then the world’s worst air disaster when an Avro Tudor 5 airliner with 78 Welsh rugby supporters and five crew on board, stalled on landing and plunged into a 52 | seaside news

field with the loss of eighty lives. Although in the eyes of the world it was a rugby disaster – which of course it was – nevertheless there is an important aeronautical side to the story, and delving into that has taken up a considerable amount of my time, together with the building of a 1/16th scale model of the aircraft for use in the film. Actually the model-making is probably the greatest challenge, for it has to be an exact replica, capable of acting the part in the film. More about that next month! A WONDERFUL ANNUAL CONCERT It was a huge privilege to be in the audience at Bridgend Male Choir’s 59th Annual Concert at the Sony Theatre, Bridgend College on Friday 11th October. The concert was compered by the incomparable Beverley Humphreys with 64 choristers who were joined by the wonderfully talented soloist tenor, Richard Allen, and the exceptional Oldcastle Primary School Choir led by Charlotte Ellet. The hard work and dedication of the music team was evident throughout and a varied programme was delivered with excellence. All artistes delighted the audience and the children were amazing. There were many highlights particularly Anfonaf Angel which the choir sung with passion in memory of the much loved and recently passed chorister Bill Hodge. ‘Singin’ in the rain’ was performed with humour when a few mischievous choristers fired water pistols into the air and Scott Williams, Organist, thrilled us with a skilful rendition of Finale-Organ Sonata No.1 (Op.42) Alexandre Guilmant. The audience could not help but participate in the combined rendition of ’Kalinka’ between Richard Allen and Bridgend Male Choir. The musical banter between them was humorous and clever and along with ‘Homeward Bound’ and familiar favourite ’American Trilogy’, brought an excellent close to a wonderful evening. Jan Craddock

BIG GIVE CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE Local charity, KPC Youth & Community, has been selected to participate in this year’s Big Give Christmas Challenge 2019, the UK’s largest match funding campaign which coincides with #GivingTuesday and runs from midday on 3rd December until midday on 10th December, when donations to participating charities will be doubled. KPC will be raising money for our project – KPC in Our Community. We still believe in our original ethos of supporting young people and our local community, to give them better chances in life, and seek funding to support us moving forward and continuing our work with young people and our local community, and hope you do too, and can support us with this! This is a brilliant way of raising funds—with match funding of donations made—so if you donate £5—this potentially gives us £10 + Gift Aid! - Donations of £50 can raise us £100 + Gift Aid and so on! We are encouraging local businesses, and groups to be part of this— by organising a small fundraising event—eg: Cake Sale, Raffle, Dress down Friday, Making a donation in lieu of sending Xmas cards this year, everyone donating the cost of a pint, drink or take-away coffee! Donations must be made online via the link, which can be accessed, from our Website from midday on Tues 3rd December: www.kpcyouth.com/christmaschallenge19, Please spread the word to family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues ... this is too good an opportunity for us to miss! And we hope you’re able to get us a step closer to achieving our challenge! Tel: Alison on 01656 79219 or email info@hotmail. com if you have any queries or to let us know what you’re planning so we can help promote this for you too.

Sport reports PORTHCAWL RUNNERS Braving the wet November nights, our latest recruits of Couch to 5k graduate on the 23rd November, so by the time this is printed they will have had a well earned celebration, with all their coaches and supporters. It’s great to see the club thriving at all levels and several of our members were selected for South Wales Teams on 16th November in Brecon; including Rob Bennett, Deb Roberts, Dave Dickson, Hannah Jenkins, Geraint Lewis and Dave Bennett. A collection and Memorial Park-run was held on 2nd November, following the sad loss of one of our club members, Michelle Thomas. Thank you to everyone who generously gave money to The Brain Tumour Charity. www.thebraintumourcharity.org Mark James held a charity band night on 15th November for the Charity Mind, as he has a place raising funds for them at next April’s London Marathon. Mark’s rise to fitness with the club has shown what can be achieved through focus and determination; but above all, he has kept it fun. He has both amused and inspired many on his journey, and his signature finish line leaps have created some great pics. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl Runners

CONEY BEACH WHEELCHAIR FUND

Fundraising continues with the sale of our raffle tickets. There are fantastic prizes including a wetsuit, dryrobe, meals, activities & £100 cash. Tickets are still available from Coney Surf shop & the raffle will be drawn on 14th December @ 6pm. Huge thank you to Pat Evans for allowing us to have the car park charges on bonfire night for his car park behind the fair. This raised over £500. During November The Jolly Sailor pub at Newton have supported us by raising funds through Joy’s weekly pub quiz. We have put in a team each week and although our score is the lowest we have had a great time testing our knowledge (or lack of!). The quizzers have been very generous and we will have a final figure for next month. The Christmas morning swim committee pledged £1000 at the start of the appeal & we are very grateful to the committee for advancing this donation early so we can purchase our first wheelchair. Corum will collect the wheelchair in time for use at this year’s Christmas morning swim. We would appreciate any additional support as we look to raise enough money to purchase a second wheelchair.
