MARY CELEBRATED HER 90TH BIRTHDAY DANCE TO HEALTH POEM Dear Editor, I’d like to mention how much I enjoyed reading Pauline Lewis’ poem ‘Dance to Health’ this month, as it cheered me up. Life is sometimes about finding true happiness, which someone or other may often be only too keen to spoil. Life is full of disappointments and sometimes happiness is elusive, but we do just have to keep on searching, as it is often more about the journey than the arrival. Well done to Pauline and all the contributors to the Seaside News’ Poetry page. “Keep dancing!” Sally Richards, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, Mary Jones, a sprightly long-time resident of Porthcawl, celebrated her 90th Birthday in mid-September by inviting 40 friends and relatives to the Grove Golf Club for a celebration lunch. Born in Maesteg, Mary moved in the 1950s to Porthcawl where her late husband Trevor managed the Co-Op menswear store and Mary worked in Freda Davis’s gown shop in John Street. Mary has one daughter Linda, three Grandsons and four GreatGrandchildren, including recently arrived twins in USA. Mary would like to thank everyone who sent birthdays cards or gifts to her for their great kindness, especially the members of the Stroke Club who also gave her a party. Mary, 4th from left, with her daughter and some of her grandsons and great-grandchildren. Mrs Linda Watson (Mary’s daughter) Windsor

RE: SEABANK HOTEL, FIONA CHRISTIE Dear Editor, Please tell Fiona the Seabank Hotel had a lovely swimming pool at the right hand side. My brother use to swim in it every day about 50 years ago. Then it slowly went into disrepair and years later it was filled in and made into a garden. Marian Crofts Ogmore-by-Sea

BOOK OF THE MONTH Past Tense by Lee Child Jack Reacher is back and this time he is on a quest into his father’s past. As Jack sets off on another of his legendary road trips, this time from Maine to California, things don’t go to plan. After seeing a sign to a place he has never been – the town where his father was born, Jack decides to take a detour. At the very same moment, close by, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians are trying to get to New York City to sell a treasure. They’re stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. It’s a strange place … but it’s all there is. After making enquiries at the city clerk’s office, Jack is told that no one named Reacher ever lived in the town. He knows his father never went back, but now he wonders, was he ever there in the first place? So begins another of Reacher’s adventures! 16 | seaside news

THE WELSH GREAT ESCAPE While researching details for my Ann’s War Mystery Series, set locally in 1944-5, I read about the Welsh Great Escape when 67 German prisoners of war absconded from Island Farm in Bridgend, Camp 198. However, within days, all the prisoners were rounded up and returned to the camp. This story is well known. Lesser known is the story of a murder that occurred at the same time. While the local community searched for the POWs, sadly a woman from Porthcawl, Lily Griffiths, was shot and fatally wounded. Naturally, suspicion fell on the POWs, but were they responsible? Lead by Superintendent Bill May the police conducted an investigation. That investigation led to a soldier, Howard John Grossley. Slowly, the facts emerged - Grossley had shot Lily during a domestic dispute. Later, a jury at Glamorgan Assizes found Grossley guilty of murder and he went to the gallows. I’ve altered some of the facts and used a fictional account of the murder as the centrepiece for my story, Escape. Local history WARTIME BRIDGEND IS HERE TO STAY

This week Bridgend Town Council launches the brand new bilingual website for the Wartime Bridgend project. It contains information about the Wartime Bridgend project, which the town council have been running since May 2017. The project, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, aims to capture oral histories and develop an archive of photographs and memorabilia of Bridgend during the war. This work was undertaken by a group of students from Bryntirion Comprehensive with support from their history teacher Andrew Shell. The project also had a small team of passionate community historians who went into the community to meet with people who lived and worked in Bridgend during WW2. You can listen to and read about these interviews on the website, which also feature a downloadable KS2 education pack for teachers and learners, along with information about Bridgend during WW2. By next Spring the website will be a key resource for tourists to the town as they will be able to engage with this history with 3 bespoke interpretation panels in the town centre that will tell parts of these important stories. The project marks the important role that Bridgend played during the war. It was the site for the Royal Ordnance Factories, which employed up to 40,000 people at the time. Bridgend was also home to Island Farm Prisoner of War camp, originally built to house the women who worked in the munitions factory and arsenal. Just to the west of the town, the RAF training school was based at Stormy Down, linked to the marine base at Porthcawl. One of the less-well known facts was that the people of Bridgend raised £300,000 to pay towards a U-Class war submarine, HMS Urge, as part of National Warship Week in 1941.

PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS 1918

Many soldiers, and their families, were never to be free of the reminders of the sacrifice made. Yet, the country had to heal its wounds, which would not be as peaceful as many hoped. Political, economic and social changes would dominate British life. Yet, that December such concerns seemed distant. “To the delight of everyone, particularly the children, Porthcawl’s tradespeople tastefully decorated their windows for this wonderful peace Christmas.” (Porthcawl News) The weekend before Christmas, John Street had been crowded with shoppers, who delighted in the excellent display of meat and poultry at Bragg’s and Hillier’s’ the butchers’ with Clare and Griffiths, the local jewellers’ shops described as being “a blaze of gold, silver and precious stones.” But, it was Hocking’s and Hutchinson’s, the toy and fancy dealers, who were the busiest, with their excellent selection of Christmas novelties. Furthermore, many soldiers were allowed home on furlough; but it was the homecoming of one prisoner of war that caused the greatest excitement. Upon the signing of the armistice, Private George Walton, Border Regiment, 11 Queen’s Avenue, was released from Wilebursch Camp, Germany, sent by train to Metz, onto Calais, where he crossed the Channel to Dover and arriving home, by train, earlier in the month. Porthcawl

Comprehensive School OPEN EVENING

For Year 12 intake in 2019 To be held at 6.00pm on Wednesday 16th January 2018 - BEST RESULTS EVER! The school is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for those students who wish to enter the Sixth Form in September 2019. Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of excellence for all our Sixth Formers. Our A Level results consistently compare very favourably with local and national figures. A Level Results 2018

• 100% of pupils achieved 2 or more passes at A Level (or equivalent) • More than 4 out of 5 were at grades A*-C or better (82%) • One third of all results were at grades A*/A (33%) • 38% of pupils secured a place at a Russell Group University • 68% of pupils achieved 3 or more A Level grades A*-C (or equivalent) Again many pupils joined Porthcawl for the Sixth Form form other schools.

One of the school’s strengths has always been the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment. The school works highly effectively with a range of partners and this work has a significant impact on pupils’ wellbeing and achievement. Once again our Sixth Formers have been exceptionally busy: Charities’ Week raised thousands of pounds for local causes, Interact Club held many events and hundreds of sweet parcels were wrapped and sent to Romanian children. Once again many pupils were involved in the Seren Network, designed to support Wales’ brightest Sixth Formers achieve their academic potential and gain access to leading universities. A huge variety of speakers visited, including our local MP, the Royal Marines, the Fire Service, Dementia Friends, MacMillan and representatives from many universities and colleges, including first hand experiences form past pupils. Parents attended several events including the highly informative Finance Evening. The whole of our Sixth Form completed a day’s walk in aid of Pancreatic Cancer, enjoyed a successful beach clean and have participated in numerous other community projects. School reports YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR

Thanks to the Rights Ambassadors we have won the bronze Rights Respecting Schools award this term and work has already begun on the silver award. Well done! The Criw Cymraeg meanwhile is organising events as they work towards achieving the Welsh Language Charter silver award. The whole school has celebrated a number of events over the last few weeks. Pastor Paul Evans led our Harvest service and our generous families contributed to the food bank. Welsh Poetry Day and ‘Shw Mae’ Day were both successful in raising awareness of our unique culture. Foundation phase children have been extremely busy. All the classes have been celebrating autumn with walks around our wonderful site looking for signs of change. They’ve also enjoyed being in the forest hunting bears and hosting language and play sessions with our parents. Key stage 2 pupils have all been to the Welsh Water centre in Cilfynydd and undertaken water workshops back at school. The football, netball and rugby squads have been training regularly and have played a number of matches, including the Urdd netball tournament. Filming ‘Stwnsh Sadwrn’ has started with a number of year 5 and 6 pupils taking part. Watch the program live from 8am on Saturdays. Rhiannon Dixon Pennaeth / Head

BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS The Performing Arts Gap Year course performed a play called Bull in our Black Box Theatre. It was written by Mike Bartlett who also wrote the BBC smash hit ‘Doctor Foster’. The actors played to a full audience all week and received excellent feedback. The next play they will perform will be written especially for this group of talented actors. Ben Lawrence who currently studies on our Degree in Music Production has recently been working at Tornado Film Studios in Swansea. Tornado Studios, founded in 2002, is an independent studio based in Swansea Bay, who specialises in the development, production and distribution of digital cinema worldwide. They aim to foster new and exciting creative talent, to develop commercially viable feature films for the global market. Ben was invited to engage with industry experience over at Tornado after a piece of film underscore was heard by Tornado’s resident composer Shaun Mosley. “Ben’s work on the project was exceptional” commented Shaun. “After hearing his piece I instantly realised he has a talent for scoring, so I decided to 24 | seaside news

ask him if he would like to come down to our studios and get involved in the process first hand”. Ben is expected to graduate in 2020 and is keen to pursue a number of pathways in the various sound industries. Finally, the Interactive Media students have produced a beautiful exhibition remembering World War 1, the posters are in Bridgend College reception for anyone to view. It is a fantastic project to make sure that the younger generation recognises the past. Adam Richards Bridgend College arichards@bridgend.ac.uk

Deadline date for the January 2019 issue is Sunday 9th December TERRIFIC TRIPS AND LEARNING OUTDOORS! Pil Primary School Year 4 had a fantastic visit to Porthcawl before half term to enhance their 999 project work. They spent the morning learning all about the role of the Coast Guard and the RLNI. Volunteers from the Porthcawl station gave up their time to take pupils on a tour around the facilities and give demonstrations using their lifesaving equipment. The class were amazed to learn that they had been involved in 119 rescues this summer alone. The afternoon was spent at the town museum learning about the terrible Samtampa disaster that claimed many lives on the coast of Porthcawl. The children showed a good understanding of how the emergency services have evolved into the teams of heroes we so often take for granted today. The children and staff are extremely grateful to all of the volunteers who gave up their time to help them with their learning. Year 5 had an awesome day in Porthcawl working with SeaQuest to enrich their Autumn term topic entitled ‘The Big Dip’. Pupils spent the day engaged in activities based in Trecco Bay and Coney Beach. Firstly pupils worked in groups to explore, looking for the different marine life living in this saltwater rock pool habitat. They enjoyed handling these creatures with care and discussing their place within the food chain. Next pupils completed a litter pick of Coney beach and were surprised to see how much litter is affecting this natural environment. They are looking forward to raising the awareness of this issue during their study of this topic in class. Mrs S Musote – Year 4 Miss S Boswell – Year 5

School reports MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ST CLARE’S

Jeans for Genes Day kickstarted our charity fundraising this term, followed by a whole school Race for Life, fundraising for Cancer Research UK, Breast Cancer Care, Cost of Cancer and Macmillan Cancer Support, with pupils and staff sponsored to walk, jog and run distances of 1-5K. Thank you to everyone who attended our Macmillan Coffee Morning. These events have made us proud of the community that all of us are part of, and we are so proud of the compassion shown by all those involved to give money to supporting those that face, or know those who face, difficult times in life related to their health. We raised just over £4,000 in total … what a fantastic community effort! We’ve just held a successful Children in Need Day. Y12 enjoyed their trip to Barcelona at half-term and Spanish lessons in the Nursery are proving very popular. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas already with rehearsals in full swing for Christmas plays and concerts and lots of festive trips planned. Contact our friendly Admissions Team on (01656) 789966 or visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk now! Merry Christmas from the smallest in the Nursery to the tallest in the Sixth Form! Helen Hier Head Teacher Picture caption: Children in Need Day at St Clare’s School

THE BRIDGE School is in full swing here at The Bridge. Pupils and staff returned from a much needed week off, ready to immerse themselves in the final weeks of the Autumn term. We’ve experienced a wide range of exciting lessons and rewards across the provision. KS2 have been working exceptionally hard to improve their reading skills, with great success! Work continues to improve relaxation and breathing techniques using Mindfulness programmes. This is of huge benefit to our pupils enabling them to control their emotions in stressful situations. In Forest Schools, pupils in KS2 and 3 have been making woodland creatures using pumpkins. The results were incredible! KS 3 pupils were invited to attend a WW1 Remembrance Service in Cardiff Castle recently. This was a very moving service for pupils and staff alike, and pupils were a credit to themselves and school for displaying respectful behaviour. Alongside a very busy classroom timetable, we’ve had a series of activities to participate for Anti-bullying week – wearing odd socks, workshops and an assembly. KS 4 have visited a Careers Fair in Cardiff, and KS 2 have enjoyed a trip to the cinema to watch “Sherlock Gnomes” as a reward for their good behaviour and high achievement points in their learning. Da iawn bawb! Next stop, Christmas! Mrs L Davies 26 | seaside news

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

The youth of today are seldom given the praise that they deserve but I would like to congratulate our young people on their extraordinary efforts during our Charities’ Week at PCS. Following an exhaustive five days of commitment, enthusiasm and energy, the Head Team raised almost £3500 and money is still coming in. As each day went by, the fundraising gathered momentum with the keenly anticipated fancy dress day for Children in Need on Friday 16th November again being the pinnacle of the week. As well as the old favourites like The Great British Bake Off and The Lip Synch Battle, pupils also introduced Fill your guts or spill your guts! The Chase and Teach-ability. All events were performed to packed out audiences of delighted pupils. I would like to thank our pupils and staff for contributing so wholeheartedly to this campaign and congratulate our extraordinary pupils on raising this impressive amount of money. Chosen charities this year, as well as Children in Need, include the The Sandville, Scouting Association, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Velindre Hospital, The Rohhad Association, Rhys Rubery 81 & The Teenage Cancer Trust. Tickets for our 41st consecutive school show, “Oliver!” are on sale at the Grand Pavilion – 01656 815995. The show runs from 23rd – 26th January and tickets start from as little as £6. The production showcases our school at its absolute best, with parents, pupils and staff working together with the common goal of producing as professional show as possible. Thank you to everyone for your commitment and dedication. It will not disappoint! Please remember our Carol Service is at 7pm on 20th December at All Saints Church – you are most welcome. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL

We want all our children to be happy, ambitious and successful so are really pleased that, due to our excellent standards and innovative approach, we continue to be recognised as a lead school for Literacy. We love visual literacy and supporting other schools in their own literacy improvement. Our new library makes reading really enjoyable (as shown in the photo)! Funding from the PTA and council has enabled us to buy a wider variety of more interesting books to support children who have a real talent for reading as well as those who need additional support to get reading off the ground. We also want all our children to become valued members of the community. This term we have supported the NSPCC with a sponsored treasure hunt, Children in Need and the Porthcawl Foodbank. We were extremely proud to join with people across Porthcawl at the All Saints Remembrance Service – thank you to Lola and Logan for representing our school. If you would like your child to be part of a warm and friendly school with high standards, please attend our Nursery Open Afternoon on January 17th at 1.20pm or contact me on 01656 815660 to arrange a visit. Jo Rowley Head Teacher

CYNFFIG NEWS It’s been a term of appointments with Anwen Sleath and Connor McCarthy being appointed Head Girl and Head Boy respectively. Joe Greenslade and Megan Stephens were appointed Deputy Head boy and girl, and pupils voted in our School Parliament with Todd Murray and Keiran Thomas as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. All School Parliament members experienced a training day to remember with an implementing change session led by Apollo Teaching, a discussion with the Youth Parliament and a talk from Lindsay Harvey Director of Education. Our Year 7 pupils participated in ‘Restart a Heart Day’ aimed at raising cardiac arrest awareness. Thank you to the Welsh ambulance staff that provided pupils with CPR training. Pupils at Cynffig also embraced the Welsh language on Dwirnod Shwmae Sumae day enjoying Brecwast Bingo and a traditional Twmpath. Congratulations to those pupils who entered the writing competition, Stranger Sagas (based on the Netflix series Stranger Things). I am delighted to announce that despite over 11,000 entries nationally, an outstanding 38 Cynffig pupils have been chosen to have their stories published. And finally rehearsals continue as we look forward to our Christmas school show Elf on 18th – 20th December. Please contact the school for further details and tickets. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL In the season of Advent we prepare for Christmas for the coming of Christ and celebrating His birth, through Advent themed assemblies and praying the Angelus at noon each day. Our community work for the end of term is for staff and students to donate to Bridgend Foodbank. I am proud to announce that Year 12 student, Ffion Higginson, won the Bridge F.M. Outstanding Academic Achievement Award presented at a ceremony held at the Heronston Hotel in November. Not only is she gifted academically but is an outstanding athlete who has international honours. In addition, she is an accomplished musician and plays trumpet, saxophone and piano, however, still manages to find time to volunteer for various local clubs, for which she has won the BAVO under 25 Volunteer of the Year! A truly inspirational young woman. Congratulations to Science Teacher Robyn Wilkins who was once again chosen to represent Wales at Ruby during the Autumn Internationals. Robyn is an excellent role model for young women wishing to follow their dream in sport. Well done to Year 11 students who showed dedication in attending Math Revision Sessions six Sundays in a row in the run up to their November examinations. I have no doubt their efforts will be rewarded with great results in January! Our Christmas Carol Concert, takes place on Wednesday 12th December, at 7 p.m. All welcome. From all the staff at Archbishop McGrath we wish all readers and their families a happy and holy Christmas. Angela Keller Head Teacher

1ST NEWTON GUIDES NEED YOUR HELP! We are urgently looking for new volunteers to become leaders as the unit is under threat of closing without sufficient help. With the biggest number of girls in the unit we’ve had for years this would be a huge shame. As part of the leader team we give these enthusiastic young girls the fantastic opportunity to make new friends, help their community, develop life skills and create memories. But it isn’t just the girls who have all the fun! On top of the incredible reward you get from seeing the girls grow and learn, leaders also make friends and get opportunities locally and internationally, and it’s great for a CV! Are you tempted to join but worried about time commitments? Don’t worry! As a completely volunteer-led organisation we are 100% flexible. Volunteering on a rota with other helpers if you have a busy work schedule is absolutely fine! Don’t want the responsibility of a whole unit? You won’t be left alone! You’ll have the support of many experienced leaders across Porthcawl. Never been a Guide? No guiding experience? It’s never too late! The majority of training occurs in meetings with the girls and is easy and fun to pick up. Poets corner CHRISTMAS IS COMING ITS JUST AROUND THE BEND The joy of giving presents and Christmas cards we send, We decorate our Christmas tree with baubles and delights Our homes we decorate with pretty fairy lights, The children listen for the bells on Santa Claus’s sleigh The reindeer hoofs are drumming on the starry milky way, The sleigh is very heavy with gifts and lovely toys Will make your Christmas happy you lucky girls and boys, We sit around the table and eat to our content We carve the Christmas turkey with veg to supplement, Church doors are opened wide the bells they also ring The people flock inside and carols they do sing, They sing the carols loudly and praise the new born king Three wise men came calling with offerings they bring, The corks are popping, the drinks are flowing free With glasses filled, so have a drink or three, So eat and drink and merrily be Now take your present from under the Christmas tree, So Christmas cheers goodwill to all So eat and drink and all be merry and have a great big ball Basil Walters Cefn Glas, Bridgend

MY FOREVER FRIEND

MY GUARDIAN GHOST

1. O Gentle Love Invading my soul, Wooing me, calling me Making me whole. Changing my darkness into Your light, Transforming my weaknesses into Your might. 2. O Powerful Love Dispelling my doubts, Smashing my prison doors Leading me out. Defeating the power of sin, Opening Hell, Annulling sickness, Making me well. Conquering death so I enjoy life, Overcoming guilt and internal strife. All power is Yours and therefore mine Over every enemy, every time. 3. O Eternal Love Reaching back before I began; Never a moment out of Your plan. Throughout my life, Throughout my days, Moulding my journey into Your ways. Tenderly setting my moments apart, Caressing the worn strings of my heart. Of Your love there is no end, The Forever Love of my Forever Friend. Bob Davies North Cornelly

This ghost resides and drifts around my house. Scares my cat, freezes a mouse. Boney spiny fingers Scrape the wall. Ice appears but is strangely warm, apart From this he’s my best friend, but a ghost after all. This ghost is always with me, my protector, who shields And defends my tormented my soul. I sense while Reading this you too yearn for my ghost, or too late perhaps Your demands are taking their toll. This ghost looks over and under and both sides of me This ghost is my aura coat, always diligently protect Without a fuss. More reliable that a guardian angel As they have a week off for Christmas. This ghost fell in love with the best parts Of me, someone I no longer know. But yearned to know What I was like before the demands entered my soul. This ghost is not cold, as we are told, but warms my spirit And soul, hence I never feel forlorn. This secret that I kept hidden for many years With my ghost I’m never alone. Alun Davies, Porthcawl

WE WON’T FORGET YOU Poppies, poppies everywhere At the beach, in Sker In a cornfield you’ll see a ruby We don’t have fights We don’t have war We don’t have argues anymore And what a wonderful world. World War One and Two Terrible to think about People fought for you and me It was really scary Why do we remember? Why do we remember? The War People fought for you and me We think about you everyday Although very few of you returned We are still sad You did good to us And you saved our land Leah Williams (aged 7), North Cornelly

Local news TOILETGATE RUMBLES ON It’s not just me that’s had no reply from the Leader of BCBC but Porthcawl Town Council has also had no reply about their plan to close the John Street toilets. In a recent debate, town councillors remained open to the possibility of assuming responsibility for the toilets. But there remains a major obstacle – the lack of a condition survey. Until the council knows the full extent of the repairs needed to these listed public toilets following years of neglect by BCBC, it cannot commit itself to becoming legally liable for them. In the meantime, the town council is exploring other avenues like installing portaloos in the town centre. But, in my view, this must be just a stop-gap. People in Porthcawl and elsewhere undoubtedly want these particular toilets to remain open on various grounds including disabled access. BCBC should bin their January deadline and agree to keep them open until April to give town councillors the time to receive a condition survey and then decide if they can afford to be liable for providing residents and visitors with these vital facilities and of course, raise the money to maintain them. A SAD START FOR FEMALE POSTIES Have you written your Christmas cards yet? For many people now, the festive season is the only time they’ll take out a pen to handwrite and post messages to loved ones. But with the centenary of the Armistice passing last month, it is worth thinking about the role post played in the war. The Royal Mail has revealed that over two billion letters were handled by the Army Postal Service from 1914-18. Receiving letters with your evening meal would be a highlight of the day for men on the front line, a reminder of who and what you were fighting for, but also a bittersweet reminder of what could be lost. But women at home and in service sometimes benefitted from the distance conveyed in these letters, as illustrated by their role in wartime communications. For the first time, deliveries in urban areas were made by women, women worked as van drivers and telephone engineers, and women were allowed to sort mail. When I visit the Royal Mail Sorting Office in Bridgend this December to thank postmen and postwomen for their hard work this Christmas, I will also remember the vital part played by those female pioneers a century ago. PARTNERSHIP IS THE KEY TO DELIVERING SERVICES ‘Partnership’ is a term, which has become increasingly popular when someone describes how many public services are now being delivered. For example, traders, the Rhiw Shopping Centre, Bridgend Town Council, the CF31 business improvement group, Watts and Morgan, local elected members and Bridgend County Borough Council have all worked together to kick-start a turnaround in Bridgend Indoor Market’s fortunes. With five new businesses in place and more on the way, a new market square is being created to provide space for specialist events, family entertainment and children’s play facilities. The exterior of the market has also received a fresh new look with a series of illustrative panels and a new home for the historic market bell, which dates back to 1837. With a new rent system and flexible lease terms in place for new stallholders, existing traders are benefitting from significant rent reductions until at least April 2020. This partnership approach has been crucial in breathing fresh life into the indoor market, and there is no reason why it cannot be replicated elsewhere. The days when councils provided everything in isolation are long gone, and as national austerity grinds on, I’m sure that we will be hearing about many further partnerships yet. THE GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER I was recently asked several questions which I’d like to share with you, the first of which was why Porthcawl pays more council tax than other areas? The truth is that the 2018-19 charge for Porthcawl is not the highest in the county borough. Council tax bills incorporate a council charge, a town and community council charge (TCC), and a Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) charge. The council and PCC apply property bands set by the Valuation Office, and TCCs set their own charge. I was then asked why the council does not spend money in Porthcawl. Again, not true – as well as citing examples such as the £3m coastal sea defences, £3.2m marina or £1.5m watersports centre, I pointed towards the forthcoming redevelopment of Salt Lake which will see millions spent on new leisure facilities, housing, car parking, retail, sea defences, infrastructure improvements and more. Finally, I was asked why Porthcawl does not have a swimming pool. ‘You might as well ask why Pencoed doesn’t have a Grand Pavilion’ I replied, adding that we probably spend more on services for older people in Porthcawl than anywhere else. All areas are treated equally, and there is no favouritism – and that’s the truth. COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

HARBOURSIDE NEWS

It’s been busy in Porthcawl as we head towards the close of Year of the Sea. The Fire & Water Extravaganza was a tremendous success with hula hooping, beach activities, a fire dance show and some amazing beach art. It was a shame that the surf events – a world record attempt for the highest number of people riding one wave and the Night Surf – didn’t go ahead. It isn’t often that we can say it was due to ‘lack of waves’! but that’s something to look forward to in the future. SeaQuest had a great half term too. Two new beach workshops – Shells & Shelters and Seaside Survival – were well attended, as well as the Flash & Glow event on Halloween, exploring bioluminescence. The week finished with a Beach Clean on Rest Bay, providing everyone with food-for-thought about the rubbish we throw away. SeaQuest is now working in partnership with the National Marine Aquarium (NMA) and is offering a series workshops for primary and secondary schools based around scientific discovery and ocean learning. The sessions link directly to the National Curriculum and are available for Early Years & Foundation Phase, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. Find out more at www.harbourquarterporthcawl.co.uk/seaquest/schools/ Remember, our Marine Services storage facilities are now open for business. If you’re looking for somewhere to store your boat, dinghy, jet-ski or other marine equipment, email contact@ porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk Full details of all Marine Services are at www.harbourquarterporthcawl.co.uk/marine-services/ And finally, keep an eye on Facebook @ HarbourQuarterPorthcawl and Twitter @HQPorthcawl for up-todate info and news of all our Christmas events.

Local news NOT JUST ONE FATHER AND SON TO THE RESCUE BUT TWO

During a recent Sunday morning training RNLI crews were paged to reports of a windsurfer in difficulty in Newton Bay. Arriving on scene the Atlantic 85 class lifeboat ‘Rose of the Shires’ located the windsurfer that was being swept out to sea by the strong easterly wind and the outgoing tide. The crew managed to pick up the casualty and with him safely on board he was landed ashore at Newton Beach where Porthcawl Coastguard Unit met him. Porthcawl’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, Philip Missen said, “What was interesting for us was that on Sunday morning’s shout to the windsurfer we had a very special crew on board, two sets of father and son. The RNLI is renowned for family ties within its volunteers but this must be so rare it suddenly struck me as I was completing the report on the incident and naming the crew. Both helmsman Carl Evans and Andrew Walmsley were accompanied by they sons Lewis and Ieuan respectively. Both sons have been visiting the station for years growing up and now, both old enough, they have chosen to follow tradition and become volunteer crew”. Ian Stroud Lifeboat Press Officer, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of serving Porthcawl Councillor Chris Smart. Chris made a substantial contribution to Porthcawl through his involvement and support of many organisations within the town. Our thoughts are with Kay and her family. The big issue of the moment is the setting of the Bridgend County Borough Budget in terms of what further cuts will be imposed. BCBC has the challenge of continuing to make significant savings following another very poor support grant settlement from Welsh Government. This has already had an impact on Porthcawl Town Council (PTC), which is now funding more and more services locally. To put things in context, the average Council Tax bill is £2,650 – of which 88% goes to BCBC, 10% to the Police Commissioner and only 2% to PTC. The shock announcement that BCBC is to close John Street and Griffin Park toilets is a blow given such very short notice. Residents can however be reassured that PTC is working on a plan to, not only ensure residents and visitors can access public toilets, but to ensure that such provision is high quality and sustainable. Porthcawl Independent Alliance – Let’s take Porthcawl Forward

Deadline date for the January 2019 issue is Sunday 9th December ON YOUR MARKS FOR NEW 10K RUN Porthcawl already enjoys its own Park Run, and now Bridgend County Borough Council is teaming up with Run4Wales to organise a major new 10k running event for 2019. With further runs pencilled in for 2020 and 2021, if all goes well this could become a regular fixture on the local events calendar. Run4Wales is a social enterprise that has already delivered a series of high-profile events including the Velothon and the Cardiff Half-Marathon. The Porthcawl run has been supported by EU funding and would be the newest addition to their 10k series, which already includes events in Cardiff Bay, Barry Island and Newport. Following the Senior Open Golf Championship and the Urdd Eisteddfod, the 10k Porthcawl run could offer a further boost for tourism while raising the profile of Bridgend County Borough - latest figures reveal that tourism supports around 4,300 jobs, and injected £344m into the local economy in 2017 compared to £289m in 2013. Finally, I hope you all enjoy a Happy Christmas, and a peaceful New Year. Don’t forget that parking is free at the Hillsboro Place car park in Porthcawl after 10am on Saturdays, while visitors to the Rhiw car park in Bridgend town centre will get the first hour free. WORLD POLIO DAY

BRIDGEND CARERS

Porthcawl Rotary Club joined thousands of other Rotary clubs around the world in supporting World Polio Day 2018. Rotary members throughout Great Britain held Purple4Polio events to raise awareness and donations for the Rotary campaign to End Polio Now and forever. Rotarian Ivor Williams visited 4 Primary Schools in Porthcawl and distributed 4000 purple crocus corms. The purple crocus has become a symbol of Rotary’s fight to end polio, as the colour purple represents the colour of the dye placed on a child’s finger to show they have been immunised against the disease. Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative over 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.99%, from about 350,000 cases a year in 125 countries to just 22 cases in 2017 and with just three remaining polio-endemic countries: Afghanistan; Pakistan; and Nigeria. The club has supported the End Polio Now campaign for several years and is one of many volunteering activities the club is involved in every year. Contact Porthcawl Rotary club to find out more about the polio campaign and other activities you can get involved in. Robert Lee

There are an estimated 7 million carers in the UK and around 18,000 carers in Bridgend alone, However not enough carers are likely to be receiving the support they need or are entitled to. One of the main obstacles to carers getting the right support is identification – both self and identification by health professionals. Self-identification can be problematic as many carers, understandably, see their relationship with the person they care for as one of being a parent, child, neighbour, friend or partner and don’t recognise “carer” as a term they would use. This is why identification by health professionals becomes even more important. To help overcome this, there has been the recent appointment of three Integrated Carers Officers, based at the Integrated Network Teams within Bridgend. The Link Workers work proactively with GP’s , District Nurses and other professionals within the localities to improve carer recognition, and identify people who become carers due to ill health of their cared for, who historically may have remained unidentified as carers. GP’s within the Networks have welcomed the support of the Link workers and have agreed to adopt the new referral pathway in identifying carers for support. Referrals will be allocated to the worker attached to each practice and will be followed up promptly with a number of possible actions including: • home visits to identify needs of the carer, providing information, advice and assistance • ‘What Matters’ conversation, collecting information • Carers Assessment • signposting to Bridgend Carers Centre activities and services It is hoped that the work of the Link Workers will improve outcomes for carers by providing greater opportunity for carers to be listened to with a face-to-face ‘what matters’ conversation about caring, identifying opportunities for self-management and sustaining their caring role and wellbeing.

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Christmas took on new meaning when I became a Christian. Once, it had all been about self-interest; Christmas was just a time for self-indulgence of one kind or another. When I realised that Jesus Christ was a real person and the Son of God, Christmas became a much more meaningful time and joyful experience. The thought that God, the Creator of time and space - and everything within it - would make a part of Himself human, to bring us His love, is astonishing. It is amazing to think that the Creator all things would take such great interest in sinful human creatures like you and me! The bible says it in these words: God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John’s gospel, chapter 3 verse 16). If you find Christmas a big let down, full of activity but empty of any deeper meaning, perhaps you need to look again at the one it is named after. For what exactly is Christmas without Christ? Include Christ in your Christmas and you can experience its true significance. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church 36 | seaside news

Club features NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

Congratulations to Millie, our Slimming World Consultant based at the Talbot Community Centre every Thursday (4 classes throughout the day). Millie has recently celebrated three years at the Talbot and is blowing her trumpet! Her members have lost the equivalent of 216 people weighing an average of 10 stone each since joining Slimming World. Well done Millie and your members. We recently held our annual fashion show at the Talbot, courtesy of Klass from the Designer Outlet, Bridgend. Seven models wore both day and evening wear, with a hint of Christmas sparkle and those who supported the event agreed they all looked very smart. The first two weeks in December will be busy at the Talbot with two diners’ Christmas lunches, one for Cwtch Cynffig, and two bingo parties, and again another for Cwtch Cynffig. We then officially shut shop from Saturday, 16th December until Monday, 2nd January. So, from the Talbot a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all, hope to see you in 2019. For more information please contact me on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www. talbotcc.co.uk

METEOR SHOWERS With its long nights, December is one of the best months for observing meteor showers. Meteors are tiny grains of sand, dust or stone that have broken off comets or asteroids and orbit in their wake. Each year, the Earth will glide through lots of different dust trails, some of which are dense enough to produce a meteor shower that can last for several days. The best of this month’s showers are the Geminids, which can peak at 100 per hour, especially after midnight. The morning of the 14th is the best time to view these very bright meteors but remember that the 14th starts straight after midnight on the 13th. It’s easy to go out on the wrong night by mistake! The asteroid responsible for the Geminids is Phaethon, which cuts right across the orbits of Mars, Earth, Venus and Mercury. Last year Phaethon passed close enough to us to be seen in small telescopes but it will be 2093 before it comes so near again. On the 21/22 December there is a second meteor shower - the Ursids that emanate from Comet 8P/Tuttle. It’s normal to see around five meteors an hour. Clive Down FRAS

CHARITY GIG HI TIDE On Friday November 2nd a charity gig was held in the Hi Tide, Porthcawl in aid of The Sandville and Velindre. A total of one thousand pounds was raised, and this will be split evenly between the two charities. It was a well-attended evening and the music was supplied by some of Porthcawl’s finest musicians. The night opened with an acoustic set by CAB, covering songs from the 60s and 70s.The tempo then increased with The Kettleheads, The Big Fat Blues Band and The Eldorado Fins knocking out rock classics which encouraged the audience to get up and dance to many of their favourite songs. This in itself would have been worthy of any charity concert, but the night took an amazing twist when Terry TNT Thomas joined a selection of musicians on stage and gave what can only be described as a magical and awe inspiring performance on the drums. The word legend is often used quite arbitrarily these days, but what we witnessed this night from Terry can only be described as legendary. Here we saw a man who, as many of you know, has suffered many trials and tribulations over the years and who only on Friday morning had left hospital after a week’s treatment. The strength of character to give such an inspirational performance left everybody spellbound – thank you Terry, you really do deserve to be known as a legend. I would also like to thanks all the local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle, The Ancient Briton, The Globe, The Lorelei, Fox’s Hairdressers, Harris Printers and Mark Jones’ sister Ruthyour contributions helped enormously. Thanks once again to all who supported this awe inspiring evening. Barney

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

Some lucky people are going to get a Christmas box, tool crate or sewing machine. All the items in the photograph above are ready to be collected and sent to our head quarters in Southampton were they, and other similar items will be shipped to Ghana for Christmas. This is the latest consignment to be sent from our workshop in Porthcawl. We have many willing volunteers who turn up each week to make sure projects in areas of Africa succeed to provide a living for impoverished communities. These items not only provide the means for the recipients to make things but it also supports their families and the means to set up workshops to provide support for others. To do this we need tools of good quality that can be lovingly refurbished to bring them back to almost new condition. We have sufficient sewing machines but are short of carpenters and engineering vices, ‘G’ clamps, sash cramp ends and carpenters metric folding rules. For more information please contact John on 01656 786367. You may also like to see the T.F.S.R. website on – www.tsfr.org

WHERE DID ALL THE POPPIES GO?

Residents and visitor to Porthcawl in 2014 will recall the memorable sea of red poppies on both the Danygraig and Town roundabouts, which was an initiative by the older peoples’ group, Porthcawl Shout Forum (PSF). It commemorated the centenary of the start of the “war to end all wars” and those who died serving their country since 1914. BCBC charged £600 to seed both roundabouts which PSF raised in the town and everyone was more than pleased with Porthcawl’s small but symbolic red Flanders Fields. Many thought the poppy roundabouts projected publicly the town’s respect for the countless number of young men and now women who having gone to war failed to return to their families and friends. The four years that lead up to 1918 were full of unimaginable bloodshed and carnage and all we can do today is remember their sacrifice. In January 2017 we again asked BCBC to repeat the poppy roundabouts to mark the end of the Great War but despite numerous assurances the result was cornflowers and marigolds. We are sadden and disappointed that after nearly two years of promising, BCBC forgot the meaning of the iconic red poppy. Porthcawl did get its blaze of Remembrance red poppies but sadly just the once. Gary Victor Porthcawl Shout Forum

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Along with the joys of being with family and friends, and sharing gifts at Christmas, there is both the persistent darkness of our times, and also great light. We are able to see that light in God’s gift of the Christ child. The world can often seem an awfully dark place; and yet even amidst that darkness, seeing that great light is a wonderful possibility. A look at Jesus, the lives he touched with healing, and the impact his teaching has had into the present day helps us to better understand and experience God’s enduring love and compassionate concern for us. The darkness that we live with in our time is the darkness of violence, of warfare, of suffering, and of poverty rooted in greed. Yet we also know that Jesus came to earth as God’s anointed one to teach and to heal. That is nothing other than light. It is the very light that we carry into the world, as we live the lives the one whose birthday we celebrate called upon us to live. Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you all. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q) How do I go about choosing the right Family Law Solicitor for my pending Divorce? Any tips? A) It is important to choose a Solicitor who specialises in Divorce and has years of experience as opposed to a general practitioner. Most Family Law Solicitors who specialise in Divorce are members of a body called Resolution which is a national group of Family Solicitors who abide by a Code of Practice to conduct work in a non-confrontational way. Some Solicitors are also members of the Law Society Family Law Panel. The Family Law Accreditation covers all types of family work and members will have shown that they have and will maintain the required level of competence and knowledge as defined by the Law Society. Notwithstanding the above, as a general rule, most people will choose a Divorce Solicitor as a result of a personal recommendation for example from friends, current or former clients of that particular firm. In fact, in our practice over the past six months, 75% of our new clients are through direct personal recommendation, for example, former clients, our peers, and other professionals such as Barristers, Accountants, Financial Advisors, Estate Agents to name but a few who have been able to share his or her personal experiences. Some of the best recommendations we have are from individuals whom we have acted against! We recommend that you have an initial appointment with your Solicitor of choice to get a feel of whether you will be able to work him or her and that you feel comfortable with that Solicitor moving your case forward. Whilst cost is important to a client, it should not be the overriding factor and consideration should be given to the experience of the Solicitor and the quality of service you will receive. CHANGES TO THE DIVORCE PROCESS Historically, if you wanted to petition for divorce, the paperwork had to be filed in hard copy at your local court, court fees and solicitors fees paid and you had to wait for approximately six months for matters to be finalised. However, a number of legal firms have signed up to two government pilot schemes that aim to reduce the amount of time it takes to get a divorce by allowing couples to apply for the process online. Recent results of the trial period show that the time it took to obtain a divorce was reduced to an average of two months, meaning the pilot scheme has significantly reduced the time it takes to process the separation. The first pilot, which has been available online since May 2018, is where solicitors apply for a divorce by uploading the divorce papers digitally to a dedicated judge. At the moment, the Government is only testing the application part where solicitors apply on behalf of their client, upload their marriage certificate, pay the court fees and submit to Her Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service. The second pilot is the Financial Remedy Consent order pilot which lets law firms upload financial orders digitally to a dedicated judge. Financial orders are needed for some divorcing couples who may need to resolve their associated financial issues. Therefore, there is a separate legal process called Financial Remedy which requires a different set of forms. If a couple can agree on how their assets should be allocated, their solicitor can apply to have a Judge make it legally binding. A firm date has not yet been confirmed for a national rollout, but a potential positive outcome of the pilot is that it will reduce the work involved and therefore the overall cost of obtaining a divorce. PROBATE WHY USE A SOLICITOR

There is a growing trend for family members to deal with all or part of estate administration, either with no help or professional advice on key issues. One of the main reason’s for the increase in “do it yourself” probates is the huge amount of free information available online. But the issue is not everything published online is accurate or up to date and the information only briefly covers main probate topics, not individual situations, which can result in some executors committing fraud unwittingly and unknowingly. A common reason why people want to handle affairs themselves is to save money on legal fees, since in many cases matters can appear straightforward. Handling an estate as an executor or administrator comes with huge responsibility and lacking experience can have tragic consequences. Research is required and tasks are often not as simple as they may first appear. For example, valuations may be required for probate and inheritance tax; IHT forms must be completed regardless of whether tax is payable; monies may need to be collected, outstanding debts settled and the transfer or sale of land, property or shares may need to be made. A lay executor would not necessarily have the required knowledge to carry out such a complex process. There are also many complicating factors that a trained solicitor would look out for, such as joint assets and unfinalised tax and people’s financial affairs are often highly disorganised, even when their death is not sudden. If executors do not carry out appropriate searches properly, they may be held personally liable by beneficiaries of the estate. Other complicating factors such as increased will related litigation and growing complexity of family arrangements can also make a straight forward process more difficult. The death of a relative can be a highly emotional time for relatives. Solicitors can give objective and impartial advice, also helping to mediate through difficulties. Solicitor’s also know the pitfalls, making litigation (and therefore unnecessary costs and delays) less likely.

While taking on an estate might appear simple, the process can be a minefield, which is why it’s better to involve a trained solicitor who can offer the required knowledge and experience to ensure that the deceased’s estate is administered as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Women’s institutions PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Hasn’t this year flown by? Or is that a sign of me getting older. Having enjoyed(?) a blistering hot summer now we are feeling the change! But guild life goes on and since my last report our poetry group have been discussing William Barnes, a Dorset Poet and figuring out his dialect. The luncheon group enjoyed a meal at the Broomwagon, another new venue. Our October meeting was a craft afternoon presented by Freda Rodger and her group. Members were delighted with the articles they were encouraged to make and I too was proud of a decoupage card I produced with much effort! This months meeting is on December 12th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall, when we will be welcoming back Ceri Joseph. We are always assured of a good afternoon with Ceri and we will have our Christmas Tea afterwards. Who can resist that? So do come and join us, all welcome! Most members brought flowers along and the posies we made were passed to a friend/neighbour as a gift. The posies looked really colourful when finished. The Fashion Show we had was very successful and well attended with a generous donation going to charity. The clothes modelled were from Samantha B. Afterwards there was a buffet. We have a varied programme coming up including a trip to Labels at Ross-on-Wye and the Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church. Our December meeting will be party night with Fish & Chips and entertainment to follow. Anyone wishing to join us will be very welcome. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. Ann Vipond

Deadline date for the January 2019 issue is Sunday 9th December PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL I hope you are all having a great time choosing presents for your family and friends. Thank all of you who came to the Christmas fair at Trinity Church, it was very well attended. The fair was opened by our Mayor Nora Clark and all the profits will be donated to the air ambulance service. In remembrance of the brave men and women who lost their lives in the wars, a poppy wreath was laid on the cenotaph of All Saints Church on remembrance Sunday, by Carol our president. IW ladies also planted a yellow rose of peace and plaque in the church memorial garden. Our social calendar is very busy at present. This is the fun part. The Christmas tree festival at All Saints Church is well worth a visit. An IW family Christmas lunch will be held at the Grove Golf Club on Sunday the 2nd of December and then on Tuesday the 4th of December we are having a Christmas afternoon tea, in our meeting this month. There seems to be rather a lot of Christmas lunches and dinners. We at Inner Wheel would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Suzanne Jefferies Club correspondent

Business & finance WOULD YOU LIKE MORE FOR LESS? This month there’s great news regarding protection, with certain providers cutting the cost of life assurance policies, one by as much as 50% for non-smokers, a huge decrease. Competition in the market has always kept insurance companies on their toes so that they don’t lose business to their competitors, as people will always be looking for better value for money. We recently saw some clients in Broadlands, Bridgend, where they had received a letter from their current insurer, telling them that their reviewed premium was going to increase in cost. They were particularly disappointed as they were about to increase the amount of their cover anyway, due to borrowing more on their mortgage to carry out home improvements. We carried out a detailed review here at the office, analysing the whole market for similar or better cover. The result was that we were able to get BETTER cover for around 20% LESS than they were already paying, a great result – and all for just an independent adviser taking a look on their behalf. Obviously they were thrilled with the result – who wouldn’t be? – and they were quick to ask us to arrange a new plan for them. Not only that however but another Family member called us shortly afterwards, to get us to review their policies, again with a positive result and more money saved. We can’t promise, that we can save clients money every time, however, as they may already be with the most competitive insurer for their needs. However, where we ARE able to save you money, we often find that a new policy has better cover options,

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

NEW REPORT HIGHLIGHTS UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR WALES’ WILD BEES

Our club membership has increased during the last year and it is lovely to meet all the new faces at our monthly talks. It is also great to be asked gardening questions as it keeps us old ‘uns on our toes! Last month we had a quiz night, which was great fun and a nice get together. This was followed by a fund raising coffee and minced pies event and there were a wide range of cards and gifts for sale. The funds go into our programme of building maintenance to keep our club base in tip top condition not just for our use but for the wider community as well (please see our web site for venue booking). As the days are getting shorter there is not a great deal that can be done on the garden at this time of year. It is important to keep an eye on the plot just to check that all is well and secure – particularly before stormy weather is forecast! It is also prudent to check that plants being protected from frost are securely wrapped up. Then it is time to settle down with all those tempting brochures and start planning for next year’s delights? New members are always welcome – find our more at: lalestongardenclub.co.uk Joyce Pegg

Wales is home to nationally rare and threatened bee species and for some, Wales supports the last known populations in the UK. Surrounded by sea on three sides, Wales has extensive and varied coastlines, which are an extremely important habitat for many bee species, as well as a diversity of other invertebrates. Wild bees (and other pollinators) face many pressures in our modern landscapes, from habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation, to pesticides and pollution, climate change, and disease. These pressures have caused severe declines in wild bee populations, raising concerns about the under-pollination of many wildflowers and food crops, and wider biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Buglife Cymru has recently launched the Wales Threatened Bees Report - the first report of its kind to examine the status of threatened bees in Wales. Alarmingly, the report has found that seven of our bees have gone extinct in Wales, and a further five are on the brink of extinction. Through our B-Lines Initiative, we are working with partners to reverse these declines and prevent further extinctions in Wales by connecting and restoring flowerrich habitats across the countryside. Further information about B-Lines and Wales Threatened Bee Report can be found on the Buglife website. Liam Olds Conservation Officer Buglife Cymru www.buglife.org.uk Image: Steve Falk

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB December is a lovely time to work in your garden, choose a sunny day, wrap up warm and get out there; there are always jobs to be done! Fruit trees and bushes are best planted whilst they are dormant during the winter months; they don’t look much going in but think ahead to all those yummy pies and jars of jam –well worth it! Hellebores (Christmas rose) a welcome sight this time of year but the blooms can look unsightly splashed with muddy raindrops; bark chip around them will reduce this splashing effect and keep them looking a pleasure. Continue to cut back faded perennials and add to compost heap although if you can bear it, leave them until spring so the insects can use them as winter homes (nice insects of course!) We have a Christmas wreath making demonstration in Cefn Social Club on 12th December at 7.30, come along and have a go at making one. We would love to see you. Also we are holding a Christmas Disco, again in the Social Club, December 15th, fiver a ticket with Karaoke and buffet, a bargain and good fun! Contact our website. Happy Christmas! MEDITATION Busy lives, busy thoughts - that’s our life. Even those with few commitments suffer from repetitive thinking and this has a grip on the quality of one’s experience. Stopping and pausing, our thoughts become even more amplified. That’s the power of our attention. Living in Porthcawl many times we can sit and watch the surf. When we really tune into those waves, we realise the power. The amount of energy being moved. The sound and mass of water being pushed. When we tune it becomes real and non conceptual. In your life, acknowledge the repetitive cycle of your thoughts. As you acknowledge bring your attention to your breath. Realise that you are breathing. With the most gentle of voices, use the word ‘thinking’ to acknowledge the onslaught of thought. As you breathe again allow this place of kindness to open. As the waves of thought persist, again use the tranquility of the breath and your personal kindness to repeat again ‘thinking’. Just practice this. Any place and anytime. What do you notice? PORTHCAWL KIDNEY RESEARCH DONATION

Dr Parry and Mrs Jean Schofield of Porthcawl Kidney Research Committee presented a cheque for £2,000 to Kidney Wales at a Coffee Morning held on 19th October. This was money raised earlier in the year from Porthcawl Walk for Life. Many thanks to all our supporters.

BENEFICIAL EXERCISE Research has shown that a major danger to our health is visceral fat. This is not the extra inch or three around your waistline but the nasty fat that surrounds our internal organs, holding toxins against them. Previous studies on research have always indicated that you need to burn roughly 3,500 calories to remove a pound of fat from your waistline - so you will take a while to achieve noticeable benefits. But the good news is that after just 15 to 20 minutes, visceral fat starts to break down. The problem with exercise has always been that people can’t see the benefits for three months or so. However, research is clear: People who take daily exercise survive up to 50 per cent longer than those who take none. Maybe removing all that visceral fat is the reason. What you can’t see - can really hurt you! Taken from an email by Chris Woollams - founder of the charity Canceractive. Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Arts & music KENFIG HILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR

A great start for our new MD Joshua Xerri at our sell out Autumn Concert in Cornelly, again wonderfully supported by our two youth choirs, Da Capo and Crescendo. This year has also seen a significant event in the Choir’s history where four of the young men from Crescendo, (Anthony, Callum, Ben and Phil), have joined the full choir having come through both junior choirs over the past 8 years. All singing at the Principality Stadium for the Wales v South Africa Autumn International in November had a wonderful day. We all enjoyed learning the African pieces and singing the favourites such as Cwm Rhondda, Delilah, Calon Lan, Yma o Hyd, Gwahoddiad in front of 65,000 fans whilst standing on the ‘hallowed turf’. This month we look forward to our Carol Concert at Pisgah Chapel with all the local primary schools taking part as well as a Christmas Concert at Kenfig Hill Rugby Club and singing carols at four local care homes. As always, we maintain a very warm welcome to new members who can join us at rehearsals on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7-9pm at the Choral Suite, Greenacres Motel, 111, Heol Fach, North Cornelly. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/KHMVC/ on our website at www.kenfigwelshmalechoir.org.uk or contact the secretary Tony Ulberini at tonyulberini@gmail.com Tel: 07866 742452. CÔR BRO OGWR’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER It was a glittering evening at The Bear Hotel, Cowbridge, as Côr Bro Ogwr celebrated its 20th Anniversary. Founding conductor, Alun John brought along the poster of our first concert performance; Verdi’s “Requiem”, sung with the Cardiff Singer of the World 1997 winner, soprano Guang Yang. In his speech he reminisced about the memorable highlights of the choir’s trips abroad. Over 100 guests were joined by our first President, John Elfed Jones, our first accompanist Canon Graham Holcolme, our first Chairman Roger Price and our third conductor, Dr. Edward - Rhys Harry. Other guests included the Mayor of BCBC, Councillor John McCarthy and his wife, Judy. The evening was organised by chorister Yvonne Hudd and chorister Ann Heatley baked a celebration-iced fruitcake, with names of all conductors iced around the sides and a special photo on the top. We are now preparing for our 20th Anniversary concert, featuring favourites from our 20 years together and a specially commissioned work for this occasion. Alun and our tenor from our early concerts, Richard Allen, will join conductor Rosie Howarth. It will be quite a night! CORNELLY BUS SHELTER TRANSFORMED Retired art teacher, Helen Kavanagh, noticed some graffiti on her local bus shelter and wondered if she could come up with a creative solution to tackle the problem. Helen approached Cornelly Community Council to ask if she could replace the most prominent panel with artwork featuring the nearby Kenfig Pool - councillors were delighted and jumped at the chance to have such a unique feature in their village. Helen explains: “I walk past the shelter every day and thought I could do something to make people proud of the area we in which we live. Cornelly has lots of community spirit and some stunning beauty spots. When I put my idea to the Community Council they were really enthusiastic!” Chairman of Cornelly Community Council, Councillor Dorian Morgan said: “The Community Council were delighted when Mrs Kavanagh approached them with her proposal and they were happy to support such a worthwhile project. The artwork on the panel is fantastic and the Council could not be more pleased with the work Mrs Kavanagh has done for everyone to enjoy.” After Helen completed the artwork the panels were coated with a special coating, which will prolong the life of the panels by helping to protect against marks, dirt, and the weather. Feedback from residents has so far been really positive.

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW A few years ago I was a member of a film crew shooting some scenes for a documentary on the Cornish coast near the Lizard, and we stayed a few days in the village of Ruan Minor. Each evening we walked down to the neighbouring village of Cadgwith to have a meal in the Cadgwith Cove Hotel, and our guest house thoughtfully supplied us with torches to find our way back up the hill in the dark because there were no street lights, just total blackness. Stumbling up the lane, we cast our eyes skywards, and couldn’t believe the spectacle of so many stars shining brightly in the heavens. The place was so isolated that there was no artificial light for miles around. We have truly lost our connection with the night sky, and that feeling of awe and wonderment that we used to get from gazing up at countless stars twinkling brightly above our heads. On my nightly bicycle rides around Porthcawl I look skywards in clear weather but only the brightest stars show, the rest are obscured by the dull haze cast by millions of earthbound lights thrown up from towns and cities. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK The Year of the Crows? Don’t like saying “I told you so” but what a twelve months it’s been for Bridgend’s Those Damn Crows. After signing a record deal and constant touring, their debut album “Murder and the Motive” has hit the charts. Shane Greenhall and top musicianship by the lads pack it with original rock anthems featuring rasping vocals. I cannot single out any one particular track because they are all of stand out quality, including ‘Fear of the Broken’, the sublime ‘Blink of an Eye’ and ‘Don’t Give a Damn’. The group, Shane on vocals, guitarists Dave Winchurch and Ian “Shiner” Thomas, bassist Lloyd Wood and drummer Ronnie Huxford, used to be called ‘Shirker’ several years ago and recorded in our studio and had plays on Stag and Dale’s ‘In Session’ radio show. They’ve got the talent to get right to the top. Kenfig Hill’s Jayce Lewis has a great CD out called Million (Part II) while Rebecca Hurn’s new single is called ‘Brooklyn’ and is beautiful so check them out. Well, the tree’s up, thanks to Mat at the Seaside News for the space, my minders for keeping me sane, and you for your music news. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year – hic! Sport reports PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM 2018

This year marks the 54th annual Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim – and the organising committee are hoping it will be one of the best yet. The fun family splash, which is completely free to enter, has raised hundreds of thousands for good causes since the very first one back on Christmas Day in 1965. It has grown year on year, with last year’s event boasting its highest number of registered swimmers – with some 1200 signing up for a dip in the Bristol Channel. The 2017 ‘Father Christmas’ themed swim helped raise £11,000, which was donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, along with 21 other local charities. Meanwhile the special fancy dress theme for this year’s swim will be ‘Superheroes’ with Prostate Cymru being the headline charity. Those wishing to pre-register can do so online at www.christmasswim.org with on-the-morning registration starting at 10.30am at the Hi-Tide Inn, Coney Beach. Swimmers then enter the sea at Sandy Bay at 11.45am. More information – and the link to Prostate Cymru’s JustGiving page – can be found on the Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim website and Facebook page. If you would like to help, either financially or on the day, please get in touch by email at christmasswim@gmail.com

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS

Porthcawl Runners once again demonstrated the power of teamwork as they pulled together to raise £200 for the Poppy Appeal. The club were out in force at the Remembrance Day themed Porthcawl parkrun, but there was a twist. Members were sporting a special commemorative buff – lightweight stretchy material typically worn as headgear or around the neck – in order to mark it. The specially designed black and green buffs – the club’s colours – had the name Porthcawl Runners along with ‘1918-2018 Lest We Forget’ marked on them. One hundred were made with members paying £5 each, with £2 of that going towards the Poppy Appeal. It also coincided with the club’s latest Couch to 5k graduates running their very first parkrun. Meanwhile six of the club’s members – Rob Bennett, Janet Davies, Paul Ford, Deb Roberts, Jeff Thomas and Matthew Watkins – all braved the Snowdonia Marathon, while there was also another bumper turnout for the Richard Burton 10k. At the Vale Half Marathon, Sharon Ford was the third lady home closely followed by Deb Roberts in fifth. The club also took a busload on another outing, this time to the Newport parkrun and congratulations to Nicky Middleton on completing his 50th parkrun. Carl Field

SURF REPORT FOR SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA After a great summer we have experienced the best October ever for surf and sunshine. September was more autumnal with poor surf, but October is one to remember with lovely warm sunny days kicking back in like a second summer with conditions of 3-5ft Glassy surf on the bigger days. Mid-way through November it’s very similar with the water only chilled slightly with the warmer days keeping the temperatures up. These are the autumn swells we pray for all through the 6 week flat spell. Peaks are rather at a half way stage now as sand banks try to reform despite the dredging a couple of months ago which has once again taken sand off our shore and caused more coastal corrosion, eventually costing councils tens of thousands of pounds to bolster the shoreline using tax payers money, while one company causes the damage and makes profit! One section of The Welsh Coastal Path can be seen in this video I created to raise awareness….YouTube search – ‘Brig Y Don Bay erosion Ogmore by Sea Welsh Coastal path David Anthony Batten’.
