LETTERS A BIG THANK YOU FROM JOHN AND PORTHCAWL NCI Dear Editor, On 11th October members of National Coastwatch Institution - Porthcawl Station attended the presentation of £2580 raised by John Price who undertook an individual Ironman in and around Porthcawl on a cold, wet day in September. Simon Hughes, Deputy Station Manager, who thanked John most sincerely on behalf of the crew, received the cheque. John and the fundraising team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported, donated and joined in with IM Porthcawl - NCI Fundraising! The weather was awful, but the support at every stage was great - from the people on social media, on the route and those who took to the course with John at various points. During the 2.4 mile swim from the Marina slipway, swimmers from Bridgend Swim Club Members Group, Mike and Dave, Tom Chapman & the Polar Bears and the NCI watchkeeper in the tower keeping watch over all the swimmers. On the 112 mile bike ride, Aim Tri with Tom Graham, Pete, Evan and Stephen Butler (who also coaches John). On the 26.2 mile run - David Thorington, Zac and Paul Robinson from Scorpions Martial Arts, Dave, Rhian, Evan, Nick with A2T, Dave and Jason Raffill from Bridgend Swim Club and Andrew Price for riding along. Thanks to everyone who came down to the seafront to cheer them on. Emma Price, Rowan, Chris Nash and Anne Price for enabling John to do all the training required for these ‘crazy’ things. Everyone who has donated thanks, you’re all awesome! The fundraising page remains open for donations until January 20th. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/dorothy-price-1 or Just go to the Just Giving home page and search for Porthcawl NCI
Have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk the town into ‘a premier seaside resort’ has long been forgotten. The Society has written to Council Leader Huw David and a copy of that letter can be found on the Society’s website porthcawlcivictrust.co.uk. At the time of writing this letter to the Seaside News, no reply has been received. Any reply that is received will also be placed on the Society’s website. PORTHCAWL VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY CLEANUP
Dear Editor, This group was set up during the summer to collect litter from our streets and beach. We meet each Sunday at 3.30pm to clean Coney beach & surrounding areas for an hour as a (socially distanced) group. During the summer we collected litter left by people who had visited the beach, we now mainly pick up things washed in by the tides to prevent them being taken back out to sea. We usually collect at least 12 bags of litter on a Sunday in addition to the bags collected by other members individually. Whilst it is frustrating that this is necessary because people don’t take their rubbish home, we all feel a sense of achievement and satisfaction with our efforts. We welcome anyone who can help whether on a regular basis or just occasionally. It has been great this year that we have had children & teenagers involved. Facebook group is Porthcawl Volunteer Community Cleanup. Helen Lynn, Porthcawl
PORTHCAWL REGENERATION Dear Editor, At a meeting held on 15th September, BCBC’s Cabinet recognised the importance of collaborating with, and the involvement of, the community when planning Porthcawl’s regeneration. Unfortunately, despite this recognition (and claims made by BCBC representatives elsewhere) there has been no attempt by BCBC to invite the town’s residents or representative bodies, to play any part in drawing up the regeneration plans. At present, BCBC councillors seem intent on ignoring their own stated policy and ploughing on with the proposals for Salt Lake and the Green without any regard for the views and wishes of those people who live in the town. The Porthcawl Civic Trust Society is aware that many residents have concerns over certain elements of BCBC’s plans and has long called for real dialogue. This has fallen on deaf ears. It seems that BCBC councillors have decided for themselves how Salt Lake should be developed and the original aim of turning 8 | seaside news

THROUGH THE HOURGLASS – UPCOMING MENTAL HEALTH ANTHOLOGY We all reflect on the past, muse over the present and hope for the future. But what’s it like to spend your time thinking about the past, present and future when you’re in recovery from a mental illness? Through the Hourglass looks into the lives of 25 different people, each with a story to tell. They are at different stages in their recovery; reflecting, musing and hoping through writing raw, beautiful letters directed towards their past, present and future selves. The book is being crowdfunded through Unbound, where you can pledge to help fund the book’s publication and get exclusive rewards in return. Cornelly-based author Holly Pritchard is one of the authors contributing to the book. “I’m so excited to be lending my voice to this project, having lived with a mental illness my entire life. My letter is a way for me to acknowledge the work I’ve done to heal through the writing medium. Mental health is still heavily stigmatised in society and I know this book will help break down those barriers. We would love to see this published.” To find out more about the project and pledge, visit https://unbound.com/books/hourglass/

HEALTH MEDITATION
COST OF CANCER - UPDATE
A colleague said to me recently ‘You seem to be a happy and calm person, is there anything that worries you?’ Great question. I could have given a huge answer and talked about politics, environment, work, money, war, oppression, economics, family life, death and love. But, my answer a simple one. I worry about the actions that I have taken, I worry if there is depth to the small decisions that I take. I ask very regularly, what is the benefit of this action? Is this decision blameless? I ask, what is this decision doing to the mind and where can it be felt in the body? This regular contemplation always brings me to a crossroads. The first observation of this path, I am alive and conscious in the full spectrum of this mind and body. I am not solely living in my head. The second observation, I routinely give things up. Why does this happen? It happens, because contemplation coupled with meditation reveals the real ‘present’. This ‘truth’ reveals that the minds awareness, will provide states of ease that are not usually experienced in our day-to-day lives. The felt ease, reminds me that decisions made support a life that is simple, beautiful and paced. There is less wanting things to be so. I could go for promotion, write a new book, start a business and conjure up many new versions of possibility. New versions of me. Meditation has brought about a deliberate move away from these sorts of things. There can be a danger to this transformation. That danger is splitting the world into ‘us’ and ‘them’. Seeing those who haven’t realised this as being inferior or problematic. This view creates more desire to change the system or break it. It can also develop a false conceit and anger. The world is the world. The balanced side of this realisation, layers of confidence, connection, care and compassion arise. Neville Evans
Well Wonderful Payments is working nicely for us and we are already receiving payments, which are great, and it’s hardly costing the charity any money in terms of fees. In fact, it is just 10p per transaction. The light for a life this year is going to be a virtual event on Zoom on the 6th December, as soon as I have a link, I’ll be posting it on our social media platforms and also our website. There will also be a video message from the very kind Father Philip Masson. There will also be a live raffle draw so please do make sure you log on and take part. This year has been a hard year for fundraising, so we need as much help as possible. We are also doing our Step up for January event and it doesn’t matter what restrictions are in place as this event can be done safely. All you have to do is sign up and walk 12,000 steps per day. The government says to walk 10,000 steps, we’re just making it slightly more challenging by increasing it to 12,000. It is hard but it is so very doable. Go to www.costofcancer.org.uk for more details. We’ll be doing our usual Christmas lottery draw with me (Nicky) dressing up in my usual Christmas attire, this will only be revealed on the night so again please do tune in to watch on our FB page. We also increase the winnings too. So, if you want to win it you’ve got to be in it. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Anyway, don’t forget to keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours, wear those masks and keep a social distance. The sooner we adhere to the rules the sooner we can get back to normal fundraising. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
HAD A BAD NIGHT’S SLEEP? Here are 5 tips to help you get through the day By Louise Mumford 1. Think like a Boy Scout and be prepared – for the morning that is. Get into a habit of prepping the night before. 2. Get a gentle wake-up light alarm. 3. Don’t have a lie-in – it’s tempting to wake up later after a bad night’s sleep, but don’t! This just gets your body clock into a bad habit. 4. Don’t skip breakfast – it’s tempting to rush out of the door without it, but if you’re tired your body will crave sugary snacks. 5. Get some fresh air – as close to waking up as you can. It will help you feel less like the living dead. And, on that sleepless theme… Sleepless – debut thriller by new local author Louise Mumford Amazon Kindle Store No: 1 bestseller on pre-order alone! EBook just 99p now, paperback £7.37! WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE ALREADY KNOW Walking is good for you! It’s free. It’s easy to do, and it’s easy on the joints. A University of Tennessee study found that women who walked had less body fat than those who didn’t walk. It also lowers the risk of blood clots, since the calf acts as a venous pump, contracting and pumping blood from the feet and legs back to the heart, reducing the load on the heart. In addition to being an easy aerobic exercise, walking is good for you in many

USE OUR HIGH STREETS - OR LOSE THEM OBJECTIONS TO NEWTON BUILDING PLAN As Christmas draws nearer, I urge residents of Bridgend and Porthcawl to support their small local shops as much as they can. The first Saturday in December is Small Business Saturday when a concerted effort is made by traders to encourage shoppers through their doors. This has been taking place for several years but is more important than ever in 2020 when our high streets have been devastated by the lockdowns resulting from the Covid pandemic. Small shops that sell goods classified as non-essential have been forced to close for months and unless they can claw back revenue during the all-important Christmas shopping season, some may not survive into the New Year. Shopping on-line has been growing for years and the pandemic accelerated this trend because people had no other choice. But now that there is a choice, I would urge everyone to pop down to his or her local high street, enjoy the festive atmosphere and give as much business as possible to these traders. Unless we back our town centres now they will be changed forever to the detriment of us all. They are at the heart of our communities and fulfil a valuable social purpose apart from that of simply shopping. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend
I am backing residents and Porthcawl Civic Trust in objecting to plans to build 20 houses on land at Cypress Gardens in Newton. The fear is that if BCBC planners grant this scheme, it will open the door to another larger development being mooted for the top of Danygraig Avenue because it would set a precedent. The site is outside the Porthcawl Settlement boundary and permitting one development to alter that boundary would make it easier for others coming after to do the same. We are at risk here of increasing urban sprawl as existing developments coalesce with new ones. Newton is under a lot of pressure with another proposed development at the former St John’s school due for consideration shortly which would see up to 70 new houses built. Previous attempts to build on the land adjoining Cypress Gardens were refused in 2004 by BCBC on the grounds that the proposal would create an undesirable extension of urban development outside the settlement boundary, would prejudice the character of the area and would set an undesirable precedent. As far as I can see, nothing has changed since then so I urge planners to stick to their guns and turn this application down. SUZY DAVIES MS Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR The coronavirus pandemic may have forced us to change how we mark the festive season this year, but I hope you are enjoying our all-new Digital Christmas festival event. Designed to support local businesses by providing opportunities for showcasing products and promotional offers while enabling shoppers to browse their wares, the festival is offering residents a safe, alternative way of doing their festive shopping and celebrating Christmas in town centres while the pandemic remains in effect. The initiative, which will run until 5 January 2021, offers businesses a free listing on a digital Christmas website along with a special App for shoppers to use. With a virtual flight through Santa’s grotto and virtual meetand-greets with his reindeers, users of the App also have the chance to win a personalised message from Santa Claus. This is a great way to support our local organisations, traders and businesses as they engage with the general public and also provide a means for our residents to participate in some of the magic and excitement of Christmas. It also forms part of the package of support that the council has provided to local businesses since the start of the pandemic – find out more at www.bridgend.gov.uk COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM MAYOR OF PORTHCAWL Born and bred in Porthcawl I have lived here all my life. To serve as Mayor of Porthcawl is something I am immensely proud of. Porthcawl is a community of people who really care about our town. As we face these challenges due to the pandemic Porthcawl residents have once again stepped up when hundreds of local people volunteered to help the vulnerable and at risk residents with prescription and food deliveries. I am pleased that the Town Council has also provided vital support to some of our smaller charities and voluntary groups who do so much for the Town. It has never been more important than now to do what we can to support the businesses within the town by shopping local. In wishing everyone the very best for Christmas and New Year I am very aware that things will be very different this year. Christmas is a time for family and friends and my best wishes are that you will all be able to celebrate with your friends and family. Cllr Brian Jones, Mayor

DEALING WITH WINTER WEATHER
REFLECTIONS ON 2020
With more than 790km of highway across Bridgend County Borough, our Winter Maintenance Plan makes sure that roads remain open and traffic keeps moving. It identifies priority routes for emergency services, public transport, isolated villages, streets on steep inclines, industrial and shopping areas, schools and approaches to cemeteries, GP surgeries, care homes and much more. It also outlines secondary roads, which are dealt with once the main highways network has been treated. The council stores up to 4,500 tonnes of salt and plans ahead using remote weather stations, ice sensors and specific weather forecasts from MeteoGroup UK covering inland high ground, inland low ground and coastal areas. We pre-treat the road network with granulated rock salt to prevent frost and ice from forming, and call upon specially designed vehicles such as gritters to keep roads clear. This is planned carefully as road salting doesn’t work in the damp or when temperatures fall below -10 degrees. For pedestrian areas, specialist equipment sprays brine to melt ice, and we clear snow by hand and with snow blowers. There are also around 400 salt and grit bins in the county borough – you can find out more by visiting the winter weather page at www.bridgend.gov.uk
As we near the end of this unbelievably difficult and challenging year, I would like to thank all of our volunteers, community groups and third sector organisations that have worked tirelessly to help and support others not just during the first lockdown but also during the recent firebreak lockdown. Having spent time with some of the volunteers who have been helping our most vulnerable, I know the difference they have made. Their impact and contribution on the ground has been immense. To paraphrase one volunteer – our local volunteers have moved mountains, have given hope and help in so many creative ways and have shown a real generosity of spirit and kindness. My team and I have continued to help and support people, answering a huge amount of calls and emails together with sharing important information on my Twitter and Facebook pages. I remain in regular contact with key organisations that are providing support such as Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, Bridgend Council and South Wales Police together with some local charities. I have also continued to raise issues directly with the First Minister and other Welsh ministers at the Senedd/Welsh Parliament. Keep well and keep safe over the festive period.

ALL ABOARD! PLANS IN PLACE FOR A NEW ROAD TRAIN I’m sure many readers will recall the Promenade Princess, which was as a popular visitor attraction several years ago. Now plans are in place for a new land train service to offer a unique link between the town centre, the seafront and local beaches. The council recently agreed to locate an operator who can provide a seasonal service between Sandy Bay and Rest Bay. This will run from March until late September, with a traffic order in place to enable passengers to be picked up along the route. The council has already secured £11,453 funding for the land train as part of Visit Wales’ Tourist Attractor Destinations (TAD) programme. Since Visit Wales confirmed Porthcawl as a priority area for support in 2014, the council has used the TAD scheme to deliver the £1.5m Watersports Centre at Rest Bay, the refurbishment of the kiosk building at Porthcawl Marina to create accessible facilities for berth holders as well as new office space and a commercial unit, a new visitor website to showcase the county borough and more. The council is currently inviting expressions of interest from private sector companies who will manage, maintain and operate the service, so look out for more details soon. What price peace? Thoughts from a Belfast woman… IMAGINE: · airport-type security, including body frisks, as you enter your city centre to go to work every day. · being evacuated from the store you work in, listening to bombs exploding, until the manager says you can go home. · realising the only way to get home on a dark night is to walk the several miles, and you almost get killed when you walk into the path of a gunman who has just opened fire. · your city or town shuts down completely at 8pm each evening, but you cannot sleep because of the whirring of military helicopters. I came to live in Wales in October 1976. These are some of my memories of the Belfast I left. Now imagine it is 1998. 3,568 deaths later. On Good Friday a political solution to the conflict was struck. Institutions that give parity of esteem to both Irish traditions were created. The Irish border was made irrelevant and replaced by a motorway. This lauded international agreement happened because the EU and USA helped Britain and Ireland broker it. Comprehensive School SIXTH FORM SEPTEMBER 2021 Porthcawl Comprehensive is a caring and disciplined learning environment based on mutual respect in which all pupils develop their talents to the full. It is a traditional school with a proven track record of continued excellence for all. Examination results have been consistently above the local and national averages. We offer a large and vibrant sixth form with the majority of our pupils returning, and we also welcome many new pupils every year. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are unable to offer our usual open evening for prospective sixth form pupils. However, we are arranging a variety of alternatives starting in January, including individual tours of the school with our sixth form tutors Ms Crook and Mrs Williams. Please contact the school by emailing info@porthcawlschool.co.uk by Friday 8th January to register your interest for the January activities, and to receive a prospectus. Don’t forget we also have lots more information about the school on our website. www.porthcawlschool.co.uk
Our Recent Estyn Inspection Report of Spring 2020 was extremely positive and we were proud to read that: “The school has strong arrangements to promote pupils’ personal development. It has a clear rationale for provision that focuses on ensuring that pupils are happy, settled and developing as responsible, confident and independent young people.” “Pupils make strong progress in many lessons in their knowledge, understanding and skills. They recall prior learning and apply their knowledge securely to new and unfamiliar situations.” “The school offers a wide range of subject choices that meet the needs, aspirations and interests of pupils well.” “In 2018 and 2019, outcomes were stronger and above or well above expectations in most indicators.” “The school provides and extensive range of trips and visits to enhance pupils’ learning.”

The move to comprehensive school can be quite a daunting prospect and that is why at Porthcawl Comprehensive we always enjoy seeing Year 6 for numerous visits and events. With the current pandemic that has not been possible and so we are having to find different ways of working. Mrs Sloggett has already done a number of individual school tours, had virtual “meetings” with lots of Year 6 and we are finalising our Virtual Open Evening and webinar event. What’s more we are using Google Classroom to keep in touch. With the prospect of a possible vaccination we are hopeful that in the new year we can get back to actual visits as nothing beats seeing the school, meeting our staff and getting to know Year 6 from other primary schools. If in the meantime you would like any information please contact the school either by phone 01656 774100 or via email info@porthcawlschool.co.uk I will miss seeing many of you at our traditional carol service at All Saints Church, which will sadly not take place at the end of this term. However, pupils and staff are practicing hard, putting together a filmed service instead. Hopefully, next year we will be able to return to the church. In these most difficult times, I hope that you, your family and friends are healthy and remain so this Christmas time. Just before the ‘firebreak’, we fast-tracked a new programme to equip all students from Y9 to Y13 with their own personal digital device. Whether studying in school or online during lockdown, we are committed to providing a seamless teaching and student’s benefit from an uninterrupted education. Every November, we invite Y6 and Y5 to spend a day in our Senior School to introduce our wonderful school to potential pupils. Afterwards, we normally invite parents in for a pupil showcase and afternoon tea. In this ‘new normal’, we held a special Science evening for our pupils who were taught Physics, Chemistry and Biology in the Senior School labs by our GCSE and A-Level Science teachers and simultaneously, held a ‘virtual’ Senior School Open Evening for Y6 and Y5 parents. If you missed it, please contact us for a link to the recording. Whilst current COVID-19 restrictions are in place, our ‘virtual’ Sixth Form Open Evening on 2nd February so book your place now! PORTHCAWL PRIMARY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS We have had a fantastic first term back in school. In addition to our Wonderful World and Space topics, we have learnt so much through celebrating Remembrance Day, Children In Need and Black History month (where we learnt about different role models ranging from Usain Bolt to Harriet Tubman). Because of Covid, many children have missed out on celebrating their birthdays. As our children have adapted amazingly well back into full time school this term we felt that they deserved a treat. Children’s wellbeing comes first so we have borrowed an idea we saw elsewhere that enables our children to celebrate their birthdays in school but still remain within their class bubbles. We now hold a birthday party within each class on the last Friday afternoon of every month for all children who have had their birthdays that month. We provide games, snacks (all shop bought and individually wrapped!) and a happy party atmosphere! The Friends of PPS have been great in supporting the birthday celebrations and provide a small gift for each birthday child. I am extremely grateful to work with such a strong and supportive team, you are all amazing. The staff really appreciates all the complimentary comments that the families and governors have made via our school Facebook page and through personal messages sent to the school acknowledging their hard work. It is so important to show kindness during this difficult time and we are so blessed to work with very caring and generous people. We are a small and extremely friendly primary school with high standards. If you are new to the area and looking for a local school, don’t hesitate to ring 01656 815660 for a chat. BRYNTEG SCHOOL NEWS On Wednesday 11th November all Brynteg School pupils and staff observed Remembrance Day. Sixth Form students laid poppy wreaths under two plaques situated in the hall which contain the names of the ex-pupils of the school who lost their lives in the two world wars and the Korean conflict. It is also the seventieth anniversary of the unveiling of the Second World War plaque. Instead of our traditional service pupils were played a special recording of the service in their form rooms and they had the opportunity to discuss the importance of Remembrance Day. Following this, all pupils moved in their form classes to a position outside in the school grounds facing the hall where, at 11am, the last post was played by Jamie Jones in Year 11 and Mr Simon Grey Music Service Co-ordinator from the Bridgend Music Service to signify the start of a two minute silence followed by the laying of an outside wreath and the sounding of the Reveille at the end. It was the first time ever that the whole school came together outside to pay their respects in this way and the pupils really were so respectful. J L Davies – Media and Communications Officer

NOTTAGE PRIMARY NEWS
THE BRIDGE ALTERNATIVE PROVISION
This new academic year has begun like no other! The global pandemic has brought us well into the 21st century and a new digital ‘normal’. Nottage primary staff and families, like so many, have embraced the new way to work and we all came back in September with a huge smile, albeit from a safe distance. We are no longer shy at the terms ‘Risk assessment’, ‘PPE’, ‘face coverings’, ‘social distance’ and ‘Google Classroom’, these are the way to go along with our ‘bubbles’! The Nottage family wellbeing has been at the heart of our work this term and will continue to be a priority for some time to come yet, and our PTA are in the process of bringing us all together with a ‘Pathway of Positivity’ where families and staff can paint a pebble with a positive message or picture which will be laid into a pathway for all the community to see and take comfort. To add a sprinkle of fun and normality, within our bubbles, Friday 23rd October saw us come to school in odd socks and crazy hair. As the year that is 2020 draws to a close we need 2021 to bring us hope and prosperity, with Christmas on the Horizon the traditional annual Nativity will look very different for our parents, but ‘The show must go on!’ Tracy Foster Senior Admin Officer Tel.: 01656 815540 Email/ebost: admin.nottageprimary@bridgend.gov.uk
Hello Seaside News readers, we hope you are all doing well. Before we start, we want to thank all NHS and key workers for the outstanding work they have done to keep us all safe. After 6 months of watching and moaning over the TV, we have finished our first term back and now looking forward to Christmas. The year 11s were greeted in the summer by their marvellous GCSE results. The KS 3&4 students are back at Forest School in Tondu. So far we have done den building, crafts, feeding the horses and chickens, luscious walks and not to mention the many fires we have roasted flavoursome marshmallows on. This demonstrated Article 31 : You have the Right to relax and play. Last term’s topic was ‘Hola Mexico’. We learnt about ‘Day of the Dead’ and the geography of Mexico. To finish what has been a lovely term, we had a BBQ .Mary Morriss and Amy Paice helped us set up the BBQ. Once it was ready, we put scrumptious barbeque chicken, we had marinated the day before, on to ENGLISH TUTOR cook .We put the chicken in a (BASED IN NOTTAGE, PORTHCAWL) tortilla and filled it with cheese 20 years of teaching experience as and home grown chillies. THE SEA
LOCKDOWN 2
OYSTER
When strong winds blow And huge waves crash in, There is no virus to be found. The only danger is this ‘wonderful’ sea That speaks to me! Its powerful surge as it thrusts and curls Intoxicates my empty world, For every sound the current makes My mind finds more to investigate! As November light begins to fade And troubled days look set to stay, This ‘tempestuous’ tide has a range of song With many secrets for us all too long. Judith Holden, Porthcawl
So we know what lockdown 2 means from Boris It means there’s no loo roll or flour for Doris I hope that Mabel got some food that wont Rot because I’m sure she won’t get a delivery slot.
Who would be an oyster, it’s such a boring life. One day you’re the husband next day it’s the wife. All I do is flop here sifting out the sand. It’s flipping irritating and water is so bland. Who would be an oyster filtering the grit. Just to make a pearl, I’m chomping at the bit. I want have some freedom I’d rather be a fish. Where is the genie of the lamp I really need a wish. The world is not your oyster when you are a shell. It’s really very miserable in fact it’s really hell. Be glad you are a human enjoy it to the full. For living as an oyster is just so flipping dull. Bridie Banwell, Bridgend
A DIFFICULT CHRISTMAS Christmas is approaching, Santa, is oh so sad. With this dreaded virus, The future is looking bad. Children’s lists are waiting But all the shops are shut, All the elves are furloughed, They are in a rut. The trip this year is doubtful, What more can I say, Mrs Clause and Santa, are planning, There must be, a Christmas Day. Then a bright idea, the iPad, That magical invention, Everything you ever want, Anything that you mention. So children do not worry, My elves will do the work, They will toil from morn till night, I know they will not shirk. Delivery may be awkward, Cannot come down the chimney, Or tread the parlour floor. I will leave your prezzies, By your house front door. Derek Evans, Pyle

There’s Dick who can’t go to the pub for a beer, He’ll have to stay in with his old dear, And she’s got the hump ‘cos her hair can’t be done, And she’s well past the age of a daily run. Jo is happy that the schools haven’t closed, But cant help worrying she may be exposed, When picking up little Tom every day, Can other parents stay 2 meters away? I will be happy to stay put inside, Because the worry of covid has got me fried, I hope there’s a vaccine found really soon, Or I’m buggering off to live on the moon. S Hamilton-Howell, Kenfig Hill
THE DARK SEASON: A CHRISTMAS SERENADE That Holy month in darkness clad, When dreams of the holly berry Swirl in the mist along lanes still glad, Blood red drops redeem Us from our worldly sin, Woven into the laurel wreath, A nameless sorrow amongst the evergreen, Cold as snow, Dead as the leaves of winter, Haunting the winds that upon us blow, Donkeys hee haw in the distant coomb, Awaiting the birth of our Redeemer soon. THE BABY CHRISTMAS TREE I am just a little baby Christmas tree, Waiting till I’m strong and tall, When hopefully someone will pick me, Then I will be the proudest tree of all. My family will dress me up all prettily, With baubles, tinsel and lights, I will stand there so tall and proudly, As I brighten up cold nights. I will take care of all of your presents, It will be my greatest pleasure, To share these special days with you, These times I will always treasure. But the greatest gift that I can have, Will come towards the end, When I leave my family all behind, To go to heaven, to my best friend. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

FEATURES BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS REMEMBER Bridgend Soroptimists held their November Zoom meeting on Wednesday 4th. Alan Taylor, Optometrist from Coventry, brother of club member Rayner Rees, together with his Romanian colleague Paula Ghintuiala spoke of their work with World Vision Aid and time spent in Sierra Leone helping where optical services are very limited and equipment most basic. Through his endeavours with World Vision Aid great strides are being made to upgrade the facilities on offer to treat and save the sight to those requiring help. Work continues to bring first class treatment to those in need. The club was pleased to be able to lay the traditional poppy wreath at the Bridgend War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday although the customary parade and service did not take place due to current Covid restrictions. Member Shan Walsh kindly laid the wreath on our behalf. Find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/BridgendSoroptimists Eileen Bayley Publicity Officer
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES What Christmas is really all about- the greatest man in history, Jesus Christ. He had no servants yet they called Him Master. He had no degree yet they called Him Teacher. He had no medicines yet they called Him Healer. He had no army yet kings feared Him. He won no battles yet he conquered hearts all over the world. He committed no crime yet they crucified Him. He was buried in a tomb but is alive today. He has gone away but is coming back soon. Jesus Christ is Lord. Christmas is not cancelled - for the Saviour has come. We celebrate the birth and life of the Lord Jesus Christ despite our difficult present circumstances. The Messiah has come, and the world needs Him more than ever this year. So whether you celebrate at home online or in a live worship service rejoice, for Christ the Lord lived, died, and rose again for our salvation, and is preparing his return. Christmas is really all about Christ. Check out the latest news about Christmas celebrations with Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl at www.gilgal.co.uk, on Facebook and Youtube. For more information about Jesus Christ email faith@gilgal.co.uk. Merry Christmas! Rev. Martin Gillard
PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL Where would we be without Zoom? 33 of the presidents and secretaries from district 15 attended a very informative meeting with District Chairman Helen. She thanked us all for approving the donation of £500 from district 15 to the Lebanon disaster. She is still walking the Welsh coast for her charity, Air Ambulance, weather and lockdown restrictions permitting. So far, she has raised £850 of her £1500 target. Hopefully, when we can have an outside afternoon tea meeting in our President’s garden Mr. Robert Smith will be able to talk to us on autism awareness, our charity for this year. It seems strange not preparing for our usual Christmas activities such as the Christmas tree festival, coffee morning and 30 | seaside news

We wish all our members with November birthdays a very Happy Birthday and we look forward to resuming our face to face meetings as soon as it is safe to do so, but for now we wish all members and our Porthcawl supporters all the very best for Christmas and the New Year from all at Inner Wheel. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL During October we dealt with 3 logged incidents and monitored 12 incidents. 439 vessel movements were logged and 279 hours watchkeeping were undertaken. Recently we were asked to be vigilant following the loss of 11 containers from a vessel off Lands End. Tidal predictions warned us that it was highly likely that the containers would wash up along the Porthcawl coastline and indeed, our first container washed up at Traeth Mawr between Witches Point and Nash Point. Others washed up at Gileston, adjacent to Aberthaw Power Station, Margam Sands and Aberavon, where significant amounts of paper products were washed up. A large recovery operation took place involving BCBC, with the Traeth Mawr container being recovered by a landing craft, due to its remote location. We kept watch on the Traeth Mawr container until it was recovered intact and didn’t wash back out to sea. Our other incidents involved a missing surfer and another surfer caught in the rip current at Rest Bay point. Both incidents ended with a successful outcome. As daylight hours reduce, our watch hours have changed to 0800hrs until 1630hrs throughout November and December. We observe social distancing and therefore have single watchkeepers with telephone/radio support if required. Nick Weedon, Media Officer Porthcawl NCI
TRINITY CHURCH We wish everybody a very Happy and peaceful Christmas and a New Year that brings hope of a return to socialising and fellowship. Our Sunday services have resumed after the recent lockdown and we continue to hold services every Sunday at 10.30. We are still limited to 36 in the congregation due to the social distancing regulations. We are following all the recommended safe practice arrangements and have prerecorded hymns with no singing. We hope regulations will be modified in the near future and allow us to hold our usual types of services again. We continue to provide recordings of the services for those not able to attend and are performing live Zoom sessions. Our Trinity outdoor Bargain Store operates several mornings a week but none of our usual activities based in the hall will be held this year. We have written to all our members requesting support for our Church Repair Appeal and would welcome community support and other fund raising suggestions. We will be arranging services during the Christmas period when we are informed of Government guidelines. These will be published on our Facebook page and Website together with notices outside Trinity Church. Please visit our Facebook page or website for any further information. FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa As I write this article we have just heard that the consignment of tools we sent on 13th October was “half way down the Mediterranean”. No it hasn’t sunk. It is on its way via the Suez to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, for our workshop in Mwanza, which is on the Southern Shore of Lake Victoria and the work there established by TFSR Cymru. During these difficult times only a number of Toolies are allowed in our workshop, but we are not idle as we have kits to prepare for Ghana. The workshop is well equipped but has always suffered from a lack of storage for tools kindly donated prior to being refurbished. The lockdown has enabled us to have a good clear out. Thanks to the Porthcawl Horticultural Society who generously facilitated a grant to purchase much need racking and bins , also an extractor fan to mightily improve ventilation in the workshop. As we move towards the New Year we will continue to refurbish tools for kits to satisfy a very real need, even though the strange times we are now in may continue for some time. We Toolies look forward to refurbishing, gossiping, drinking tea, eating buns etc. and to take this opportunity to wish all during Advent and with Christmas coming the best and happiest fun filled times possible. report on what they have been doing in their gardens during the lockdown. Several members have submitted theirs and more are expected. All they need to do is email the report to Kay who will then email it onwards to the whole group. Any member who doesn’t use a computer can phone Kay and dictate while she types it up on the computer and then sends it on. This has given their members lots of interest and kept their passion for gardening going on. Maybe other gardening groups could do the same. Sally Corbett, Chair

I’m glad to say more are trying Zoom as it’s lovely to actually see people as our photograph from our ‘Conversations’ meeting illustrates. We’ve also had a really good ‘Quiz Group’ meet. Photos of the winners of our Guy Fawkes competition can be seen on our website: porthcawllions.org.uk Toys to Foodbank Why did Santa make an early visit to the Foodbank in Porthcawl YMCA recently? The answer is to handover the toys he had allocated to the Grotto run by Porthcawl Lions Club, which will not be possible this year because of social distancing. The club has continued to support the Food bank despite the loss of so many of its fundraising activities, and the toys should provide a bit of joy at what is likely to be a difficult time. Our biggest news is that, although because of the virus our usual Boxing Day Fun Run will not be possible, we are holding a virtual event in conjunction with local running clubs and it will be results based. Why not run off some of that lockdown flab and turkey and support local charities with us? HISTORY ANDRÉ HUE, THE WELSH SPY An inspiration for Guy Samson in my Eve’s War Heroines of SOE Series, André Hue was born in Swansea on 7 December 1923 to a Welsh mother and French father. During the night of 5/6 June 1944, André parachuted into Brittany as an SOE agent. His task was to organise the local Maquis so that they could launch guerrilla attacks on communication lines, railroads and roads. Their aim was to prevent the four Nazi divisions stationed in Brittany from joining the rest of the German army in Normandy during Operation Overlord. Throughout August 1944, André participated in the liberation of France. On 30 August, he landed in the Nievre just west of Dijon where he took command of the SOE Gondolier circuit. In Burgundy, he trained the local Maquis and blew up three bridges, which denied the retreating Nazis an exit point from the South of France. He also removed mines, placed by the Nazis to kill and maim local civilians. After the war, André worked for MI6, mainly in the Far East. PORTHCAWL’S FIRST AVIATOR
Donald was one of five sons, born in Cardiff, to Edmund and Eleanor Herne. Although the family had emigrated to Canada, Donald and his brother Keith returned to enlist in British Regiments in WW1; with Donald joining the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. In February 1919, coinciding with the death of his brother Captain Keith Herne, from the Spanish Flu, and his subsequent funeral at St John’s Church, Newton, Porthcawl, Captain Donald Herne, successfully applied for a license to operate passenger flights from Locks Common. The years following WW1 experienced the appearance of the ‘Flying Circus’ in which stunt pilots performed individually or in groups. Alongside these events pilots such as Donald Herne, offered flights to customers. Donald’s eventually progressed to piloting a 12 passenger plane from London to Paris; news of which reached America, where a firm needed ‘an intrepid aviator’ to write messages in the sky. Whilst flying over the estate of tycoon Howard Ireland’s Pine Valley, New Jersey, Donald had to make an impromptu landing. It resulted in him marrying the daughter, socialite Virginia Ireland. The marriage did not last. Donald died in Chicago 1941. Incidentally, the home in Pine Valley was eventually bought by Al Capone and today overlooks the Pine Valley Golf Club; considered one of the best courses in America. Ceri Joseph

LEGAL GOOD DIVORCE
COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit then we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A cohabitation agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force - the agreement can say so. Even so, a cohabitation agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice. You must also be open about your individual financial positions when you enter into the agreement. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. If you wish to discuss this further then please contact us. Resolution is a community of more than 6,500 family justice professionals, of which Madeline Rand of King Davies & Partners is one. Resolution members commit to a Code of Practice which promotes a constructive approach to family issues that considers the needs of the whole family and keeps the best interests of any children involved at the heart of proceedings. The Code means that members believe the process of separating, sorting out finances and making arrangements for children can be done in a way that minimises conflict and promotes amicable agreements. From 30 November – 4 December, Resolution’s initiative is to raise awareness of the real value of early advice, and to demonstrate why clients should choose a Resolution member who upholds their Code of conduct. Dealing with separation and divorce is difficult. Emotions are high and even if two people both agree to separate, the changes can be so stressful that conflict and confrontation can seem inevitable. However, this doesn’t need to be the case. The benefits of early professional advice can help prevent unnecessary and damaging conflict when a couple make the painful decision to divorce - particularly where children are involved. There is no silver bullet approach to divorce as every family and relationship is different. However, professional advice delivered early can help people think through their options and decide which process or combination of processes would be most suitable. It is easy to find local solicitors who are members of Resolution via the Resolution website : resolution.org.uk. King Davies & Partners will offer an extended service from 30 November until 9 December so that readers of the Seaside News may take advantage of obtaining 30 minutes of free matrimonial advice. FINANCE DO HAPPY CLIENTS MAKE BETTER INVESTORS? I’ve often been curious as to whether an out-going happy client gets a better return on their investments than their opposite peers. I’m not suggesting that shy retiring investors make bad investors, probably not, but your general state of mind over money does affect your long-term profits. As financial advisors we are duty bound to take clients through a ‘risk profile’ to check on their capacity to accept risk in their given investment and their capacity for potential loss. Generally speaking the happier or more extravert clients are able to accept risk more readily than the shy retiring types almost as if their general state of mind can accept a potential set back as they know there will be a reward in the longer term. What this reveals is that if your personality cannot accept risk then your rewards will always be limited. I took this on board some time ago and felt on many occasions that some clients risk profiles were way too low to make any investment worthwhile. It’s at this point you have to tell them that investing may not for them or otherwise you help them think outside the box. This has its drawbacks because whilst you think your helping clients and educating them to make money you could also make them feel uncomfortable which nobody wants There’s this concept of your glass being half full or half empty and I much prefer dealing with clients whose glass is half full otherwise you’re forever fighting demons when problems occur. In the scheme of things most investments will falter on occasion and it’s having the strength to deal with this event that

WHAT A YEAR (TO FORGET!) When we welcomed in the New Year back on 01 January 2020, little could we have known how the year would unfold, together with all that it has brought with it. If someone had said that we’d see deaths from a new virus, the nation locked down and cooped up for weeks at a time and the mortgage market continuing to defy all expectations, we’d have thought they were ready for certification of unsound mind. Then when we consider the more than eye-watering amounts of money the Government has spent on so many wellknown issues, creating a public debt that will last for possibly generations to come, we have to scratch our heads, especially with Christmas already looming. Our phone has been red hot over the past weeks as people have come to realise that financial problems pose a real concern, especially around jobs and ongoing debts as the pandemic issues continue to have such a huge effect. This is where we come in to assist wherever possible and throughout this year, we’ve spent much of the time helping and advising those who had either already come to be affected by such problems or were finding that they couldn’t seem to access finance, especially in the borrowing sectors. That goes for both first time buyers struggling for deposits and mortgages, especially if they have had past credit problems such as missed payments, etc; then there are those in later life for whom financial pressures or the need to assist Family are uppermost in their minds. Many of the problems centre on the fact that very often, people simply don’t know with whom to
speak in order to get appropriate advice and help, so here is your opportunity to do so. If you have suffered from less than a perfect credit history, it need not necessarily be the end of the world. We have been able to help a great many people this year, finding lenders who are keen to assist and help get your record back on track. With our specialist Underwriter Adviser Karen Ferguson available, people who had been turned down elsewhere have been fortunate enough to be granted a new deal. Likewise, for those in later life for whom financial matters are still of great importance, we are ready and willing to assist all we can to help you achieve what you need. The simple rule is this: although we can’t guarantee that every person will get a result, many will and if you don’t at least discuss it, you’ll still be in the same boat. We are very approachable, friendly and empathetic, so call us on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308. In the meantime, at this strangest of year’s ends, we sincerely wish everyone a healthy, happy and family-led Christmas – keep safe and we’ll see you all in 2021. The month of December is when most of us are indoors maybe planning our gardening for next year. When weather permits tree pruning can be a task to tackle, check those outside taps are insulated and you are ready to tackle ice on ponds if you have fish. The greenhouse should be safely bedded down and heaters in place if you have them. We at Laleston Gardening Club are still only holding small permitted activities within the regulation guidelines, so nothing to announce just now. Can we wish all our members and friends a Happy and safe Festive season, like everyone else we will all be wishing for a better 2021 our 50th Anniversary year! Susan Ford

This month’s crisp wintery weather can be strikingly beautiful and bitterly cold in equal measures, so be sure to wrap up when working in the garden, just like you vulnerable plants, like penstemons need protection against the frost, hessian is good for this, don’t use plastic even dormant plants need to breathe (don’t suffocate the poor things!) Bring indoors all watering equipment including hoses and sprinklers so they don’t freeze and split. (Pricey!) Resist the temptation to prune hydrangeas, as the dead flowers provide frost protection for the swelling buds further down the stem, (Although they do look lovely sprayed gold as a Christmas decoration!) Birds are terrific allies in the garden, keeping down pests and filling it with song, feed them is you can, winter is hard for them with the ground frozen and don’t forget a shallow bowl of water, dehydration is as harmful as hunger to little birds! Place straw around parsnips because once to ground freezes they are dam hard to pull up! “I heard a bird sing in the dark of December, it was a magical thing and sweet to remember, we are nearer to spring than we were in13:55 September” 20/11/2020 Happy Christmas – Stay safe. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
Well, again I can’t give you much news on the local music scene as this horrid pandemic is still putting everything on hold. Tours and festivals for next year are cancelled and even re-scheduled tours are now being put on hold. I should have been in Cardiff last month for my birthday treat, watching rock giants Uriah Heep on their 50th anniversary tour, but that never happened. The Heep has sold over 45 million albums but their year hasn’t gone to plan as two former band members, drummer Lee Kerslake and keyboard player Ken Hensley, both passed away recently. Ken, who wrote most of the group’s classics, was a huge influence on my career and a big reason I became a songwriter. His music will live on! As you all know, this is my favourite time of the year and when you’re reading this column my tree would have been up for a few weeks to add a little Christmas cheer to these dark days. I’m not sure if “Turning On The Christmas Lights” celebrations will be allowed? The Porthcawl Christmas Festival was fantastic last year, so fingers crossed. Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks
November was when we would have been performed at the Remembrance Day service at All Saints Church - one of our favourite dates and with its wonderful acoustics, where we sound at our best. Not only does the choir get to pay its respects to all those who lost their lives during various conflicts, but it also signals the start of our Christmas calendar of concerts. Whilst we were unable to perform at the Remembrance Day service, we maintained our tradition of laying a wreath on behalf of the choir at the cenotaph. Baritone John Pearman who was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Kings Own Regiment was privileged to carry out this duty. 2nd tenor Ray Street performed his regular duty of standard-bearer for the ceremony. We will be fondly thinking of all our friends we normally see at our festive concerts and whilst unable to perform wish them and all our dedicated followers and supporters a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With the recent exciting news that a vaccine may be on its way to combat this wretched virus the choir will be busy planning how and when we may perform again. Look forward to seeing you all soon. Ian Williams
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The name Robert Krasker will probably not mean much to most people these days, but he was the great Australian cinematographer (1913-1981) who settled in this country at the age of twentyfour and began his film career over here working for Alexander Korda’s London Films company as a camera operator. He went on to become an outstanding director of photography, and you will be familiar with his work if you have seen such films as “Henry V”, which he shot in Technicolor, “El Cid” and “The Fall of the Roman Empire”, amongst many others. But in my opinion his greatest achievements were in black & white: “Brief Encounter” and “The Third Man” come most easily to mind, the latter for which he won an Academy Award. It has been said that Krasker retired from film-making in the late 1960s when he considered that elegance and style had gone out of fashion, and films were increasingly adopting the cinéma vérité look, although his health was also beginning to fail. Some would say that the look of films has been going downhill ever since – I find myself wondering what he would make of today’s digital offerings? PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Dennis Lines Memorial Competition and were honoured to have Laurence Lines, the son of the late Dennis Lines, join us for the event live on Zoom. It was a very close competition with 4 images scoring the maximum 20 points so our Judge Johnnie Rogers chose “Red Sky at Night” by John Corcoran as the overall winner. Congratulations John. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us, we usually meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR but our meetings are currently suspended due to the Coronavirus situation so we’re now holding competitions etc. online instead. Our program is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk. Geoff Baker
