REGARDING THE SEABANK

SOUTH WALES HOMELESS WALKABOUTS

Dear Editor, My wife and I and several friends, attended a ‘Haiwan’ themed evening party at the Seabank back in late 70’s possibly 1980, and knowing they had a pool, my wife and her friend had swimsuits under their costumes, and sneaked a quick swim in the pool. I also noticed the announcement about Mary Jones 90th birthday celebration. My mother, Winifred Mary Sexton (nee Owen) was also born in Maesteg and will be 92 on 1st January. She is now in a care home in Maesteg. Would you be able to let me know Mary Jones maiden name, as its quite possible they knew each other, and I know she would be interested to hear about Mary Jones. Phillip & Jane Sexton, Cowbridge

CLOSURE OF PORTHCAWL TOILETS Dear Editor, I for one (being one of thousands) would like to protest in the strongest terms for these toilets being closed. While waiting for my husband in the car yesterday, I saw four men in the space of ten minutes urinating against the wall! If this is the case what on earth is the alley way going to smell like at the end of one day, leave alone one week? As a disabled person myself, I will have to think twice before going shopping as going to the toilet is part of my disablement. C.M. Richards, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, My name is Sarah Aubrey and I have recently set up a very small, local, non-profit charity called South Wales Homeless Walkabouts. On a recent trip to Cardiff, I was amazed at the number of homeless people living on the streets in tents and sleeping bags. I came across a gentleman and offered to buy him breakfast. He was so grateful and accepted a cup of tea and some biscuits. I briefly mentioned how cold it was and he offered me his only blanket to keep warm! This was a turning point for me. I decided I would go to Cardiff with a flask of soup and some cups and provide the homeless with a warm drink the following weekend. This trip turned into so much more and through donations, along with a colleague and my husband we were able to provide clothing, food and hot drinks to many homeless people. This small charity aims to continue this work and can only do so through the kind donations of goods. Walkabouts take place every 6-8 weeks in towns and cities across South Wales. If you would read more, please find us on Facebook- South Wales Homeless Walkabouts or Twitter- @HomelessSouth Sarah Aubrey, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL FUNDING PORTHCAWL TOILETS Dear Editor, I notice that yet again BCBC is off-loading its’ responsibilities onto Porthcawl Town Council. This time it is the toilets in John Street, which it appears, are about to be taken over by Porthcawl Town Council. I think that we are very lucky to currently have such an enthusiastic, dynamic and competent team doing their best for the town. However, their budget is finite and I believe that maybe the time has come for the townspeople themselves - the people who live, work, or visit - should maybe help to raise funds for Porthcawl. Perhaps also the local charitable organisations who do such a sterling job supporting a variety of worthwhile causes could perhaps, for this year at least, make our town their priority and help to swell the Town Council coffers to provide all those amenities which are so essential to us. What do other people think? Helen Hawes, Mawdlam

Dear Editor, Just an idea about the toilets and it’s an idea from my mum. She often says to me before I take her out “I need to spend a penny.” Well for those not used to the term it comes from when if you wanted to use a public convenience you had to put a penny in the slot. Now we are in 2018 so why not charge for the use of the toilets money generated pays for the attendant and up keep. How about 50p a visit I’m sure that’s acceptable to everyone? I holiday in St Ives, Cornwall and they have been doing this for years with no complaints. Just an idea… Richard Torkington, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH ‘House of Glass’ by Susan Fletcher June 1914 and a young woman - Clara Waterfield - is summoned to a large stone house in Gloucestershire. Her task: to fill a greenhouse with exotic plants from Kew Gardens, to create a private paradise for the owner of Shadowbrook. Yet, on arrival, Clara hears rumours: something is wrong with this quiet, wisteria-covered house. Its gardens are filled with foxgloves, hydrangea and roses; it has lily-ponds, a croquet lawn - and the marvellous new glasshouse awaits her. But the house itself feels unloved. Its rooms are shuttered, or empty. The owner is mostly absent; the housekeeper and maids seem afraid. And soon, Clara understands their fear: for something - or someone - is walking through the house at night. In the height of summer, she finds herself drawn deeper into Shadowbrook’s dark interior - and into the secrets that violently haunt this house. Nothing - not even the men who claim they wish to help her - is quite what it seems. Reminiscent of Daphne du Maurier, this is a wonderful, atmospheric Gothic page-turner. A deeply absorbing, pause-resisting ghost story that’s also a love story; for listeners who love Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger, Frances Hodges Burnett’s The Secret Garden, Margaret Atwood’s Alias Grace or Jane Harris’ The Observations. 16 | seaside news

PORTMEIRION Currently, I’m writing The Devil and Ms Devlin, Sam Smith Mystery Series book fifteen. Most of my novels are set on the South Wales coast, between Porthcawl and Cardiff. However, The Devil and Ms Devlin is set in Portmeirion. Portmeirion was designed and built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village. In designing the village, Williams-Ellis stated that he wished to pay tribute to the atmosphere of the Mediterranean. In particular, the fishing village of Portofino on the Italian Riviera strongly influenced his design. Williams-Ellis incorporated fragments of demolished buildings, including works by a number of other architects, in his fairytale village. To some, Portmeirion was an overgrown folly. However, Williams-Ellis’ dream was justified for the village and its nostalgia strongly influenced the development of postmodernism in twentieth century architecture. Portmeirion has often featured in popular culture with episodes of Danger Man, Doctor Who, Citizen Smith and Cold Feet all shot there. However, Portmeirion’s greatest claim to television fame is as The Village in the 1966–67 cult classic The Prisoner starring Patrick McGoohan (who also starred in Danger Man). Annual fan conventions are still held there, at locations unchanged to this day. Hannah Howe, Amazon #1 author. https://hannah-howe.com

Local history CAPTAIN WILLIAM HENRY

FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWSÂ

William Henry was born on 23rd May 1848 at Hwtchwns Farm. During the time William was growing up Porthcawl was a thriving port, which must have affected him because in 1863, at the age of 15 years, he went to sea. On 17th March 1870, William achieved his certificate as 2nd Mate and spent the rest of the year serving on the ‘John Brogden,’ which was the first ship that had entered Porthcawl Dock when it opened in 1865. On 11th May 1871, he gained his 1st Mate Certificate and on 21st January 1875, William finally gained his Certificate of Competence, at Bristol, but opted to have it presented at Porthcawl, two days later. Captain Henry’s first ship, as Master, was the ‘SS Blanche’, which often operated out of Porthcawl. After five years of being in command of many other ships, serving in the Mediterranean and Baltic, in August 1880 William was appointed as Master of the schooner, ‘SS Castleton’. On 14th October 1886 tragedy struck. Whilst embarking on a voyage to St Lucia, a hurricane struck in the Bristol Channel resulting in the loss 17 ships. Recorded in the Western Mail 25th October 1886. ‘William Henry, Master, Porthcawl: leaves a widow and 1 child.’ Ceri Joseph

School reports BRYNTEG SCHOOL NEWS

Pupils from Brynteg School in Bridgend were busy in the ‘run up’ to Christmas fundraising for the annual Santa Appeal. All form classes have one thing in common, to raise as much money as possible in order to purchase presents for families in Bridgend who find Christmas a difficult time of year financially. Historically Brynteg School in Bridgend has endeavoured to fundraise as much as possible for this cause and 2018 was no exception. Brynteg School has raised a staggering £4,600. The total amount raised enabled us to purchase presents for 157 children in the Bridgend area and we have made a donation to the Women’s Refuge of £300.00. What superb pupils we have at Brynteg! Well done to our pupils and staff for their fantastic fundraising efforts and once again many thanks to J.H Apsee & Son for their help and support with transporting all the Brynteg Santa Appeal gifts to Bridgend County Borough Council on 19th December. CYNFFIG NEWS This term Cynffig’s English Department celebrated 38 pupils being published in a ‘Stranger Sagas’ Story Collection. Pupils were thrilled to see their work in a published book and take a copy home. Cane Bower, Rhianna Knowles of Year 8, and Cerys Powell and Ffion Harmen of Year 9 were also winners in the ‘Poetry Scape’ competition. They now await the publication of their winning poems. A group of 27 influential year 8 pupils were recruited to attend a two-day smoking prevention training course. The course enabled pupils to discuss the risks of smoking and the benefits of being smoke free with the ultimate aim of building a community of young people that are knowledgeable about the tactics of the tobacco industry and empowered to inform others. The pupils who will continue their training have been encouraged to disseminate smoke free messages and record their smoke free conversations. At the end of the programme the pupils will become ‘JustB SmokeFree’ ambassadors. WRU coach Ethan Waters visited Cynffig to put the Year 7 and Year 8 Rugby teams through their paces. The pupils enjoyed excellent sessions working on attacking play and now look forward to putting what they have learned into practice. Hannah Castle Head Teacher Tel: (01656) 740294 24 | seaside news

BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS Creative Arts Projects are well under way this term. Firstly the Fashion course recently had success in the finals of The National Fashion Competition. There were only 6 finalists who were chosen from Wales and we are lucky enough to have three learners from Bridgend College! The students entered 6 designs each and finalists had to make their final design on the day, in a Sewing Bee style tough final. Competition was extremely stiff and we are proud to say that our amazing students come second and third! Huge congratulations to Nia Davies who came second, Stefania Fricker who came third and Rukhsana Khan who was highly commended. The judges commented on the extremely high standard from Bridgend College and said that a great future was in store for this new course. Photography learners are to embark on an exciting group exhibition at the Giles Gallery in Pontyclun throughout February. The exhibition is entitled “Elements of Regeneration” which will be a festival of ideas and perceptions from a highly creative and ambitious cohort. The work is created from a series of creative events in collaboration with Bridgend Council and Carnegie House. The exhibition, will be welcoming visitors from Feb 2nd to 23rd at the Giles Gallery, Pontyclun. If anyone is interested in any of our courses in Creative Arts we welcome your enquiries. WEST PARK PRIMARY Welcome to Spring term and a very Happy New Year from West Park! We had a fantastic first week in our Early Years Unit and our new part time ‘Sunbeams’ have already enjoyed making new friends and getting to know one another. Our topic in Foundation Phase is On Safari and to kick-start the theme the Early Years Unit visited the Amelia Trust Farm. They have recreated the farm at school and are busy in the farm shop and tending to the fields and the animals! Year 1 and Year 2 came to school dressed as farm animals and now know all the safari animals, herbivores and carnivores and are enjoying sharing their habitat with the rather impressive Geraldine the Giraffe! Juniors are learning about Oceans this term and are very excited to be taking part in Seaquest workshops with Lewis from the National Marine Aquarium. In other Eco news we are busy planning ways to get involved with Porthcawl Love It Don’t Trash It Campaign – watch this space! Over the Christmas break, Dunraven completely transformed our cloakroom to make a safe, dry space for storing coats, bags and wellies. Wellies and wet weather gear are essential in West Park especially as we have our very own Woodland, which we use for Forest School Activities so we would like to say a huge thanks to Dunraven for their generosity. If you are considering a school for your child’s education, you are very welcome to book a visit or our check our website www.westparkprimary.org.uk

CARWYN JONES OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW ST CLARE’S SIXTH FORM CENTRE

Mr Carwyn Jones AM and former First Minister of Wales visited St Clare’s School, near Porthcawl just before Christmas to officially open our new state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre and stayed for a question and answer session with students. It was fantastic to see how engaged the Sixth Form students were with current affairs and politics and to listen to them asking questions about tuition fees, careers in STEM and future funding for the NHS and schools in Wales. The Sixth Form students will not forget the experience of meeting him and being able to engage in their own ‘Question Time’. They had prepared their questions carefully and were clearly surprised to listen to straight talking answers. It will be interesting to see if any of them show any political inclinations in the future. Our Sixth Form Opening Evening is on Wednesday, 12th March. Come and find out why our A-Level results are the best in the area. Our small tutor groups, 6 hours taught per subject weekly and dedicated Sixth Form team ensure our students make outstanding progress and get results beyond their predicted grades. SCHOOLS ENJOY CHRISTMAS SUCCESS

Just before Christmas, year six pupils from primary schools in Porthcawl were invited to enter a Christmas competition set by Melanie Weaver from the Porthcawl St Sébastien Town Twinning Association. (PSSTTA) Pupils who entered the competition had to find out many interesting fact about how Christmas is celebrated in France and, perhaps, learn some new French words at the same time. The winners were presented with an English/French Dictionary and runners-up with chocolate Santas. Congratulations go to Rowan Morgans, Brooke B-H, Sean Scratcherd, Lucy Bradbury, Rhys Drummond, Lily Barrett, Rhys Davies, Holly Jordan, Mervyn Bridge and Gwen Williams from West Park Primary School and Emily Jones and Hattie Bluff from Nottage Primary School. Perhaps the association may have some budding members already! PSSTTA would also like to congratulate and thank all those who entered the competition for their time in researching facts about a French Christmas and also to the schools for encouraging the pupils to take part. If you are interested in finding out more about the Association it may be worth taking a look at the association’s web-site simply type in PSSTTA on your search engine. Ivor Williams

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL I hope that many readers were able to enjoy our 41st School Show, ‘Oliver!’ which played at the Grand Pavilion from 23-26 January. After the phenomenal success of ‘Phantom’ last year, we are absolutely delighted to report that ‘Oliver!’ lived up to all expectation and has just finished its sell-out, 4 show run. Thank you to the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the extraordinary success of the show. Thanks to everyone who supported the show by helping children fulfill their commitments, giving up time to help and by advertising in our show programme. Without you there would be no show! Long may the tradition of professionalism and excellence continue at PCS! Thank you to parents and pupils who attended our recent Sixth Form Open evening. School reports PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL Pupils in Year 3 had a visit from Warburtons bread representatives. During the day pupils learnt key messages about hygiene when working with food and how to make bread rolls. They were given important advice about eating a balanced meal and were introduced to the ‘eat well’ guide, which will help them to plan healthy meals in the future. Their Global Gourmet topic will continue with research at the local supermarket and a food recycling mission! Dogs Trust also visited school to work with pupils in Key Stage 2 to develop their awareness of how to be a safe and responsible dog owner. Pupils were given the opportunity to work collaboratively to share ideas to solve scenarios involving dogs. A Casey-Haimes Deputy Head Teacher

ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Students are still making the most of their God-given talents and I am proud to announce that Leo Roberts has just been taken on as a registered member of the Swansea City AFC academy, a first for a student in our school. In addition, Chloe Protheroe is the Welsh swimming champion at 800 and 1500 metres. Well done to both these students! Preparations continue for the new curriculum. Our creative agents from Year 7 and 8, who participated in the Lead Creative Schools Scheme over the past two years, are busy developing a Year 7 Cross-Curricular module of work, which will be trialled in the summer term. It is great to see the legacy of this fantastic scheme continues to make an impact on the school curriculum. Our learning ambassadors have told senior leaders that they are enjoying their wellbeing lessons, which have been added to the Year 7 Curriculum this academic year. Year 7 is also on a ‘Mission to Mars’ in Science and Technology lessons. Students and staff are working hard in readiness to stage this year’s school musical, Mary Poppins Junior From 12th to 14th February. We have invited our cluster school years 5/6 pupils to be part of this fabulous experience, by performing a medley of Mary Poppins’ songs which promises to be a truly supercalifragilisticexpialidocious show!!! Tickets are available from Reception at Archbishop McGrath on Bridgend 01656-815505. Angela Keller, Head Teacher

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our school is a happy place where children come first. We want all our children to lead full and rewarding lives as valued community members, which is why we encourage them to take on additional roles. Our school ambassadors lead regular Rights Respecting School assemblies and develop home tasks. Our Eco Committee ensured we were the first Bridgend School to receive the Platinum Eco Award renewal. Through Gilgal Church, they have made links with a new school in Uganda and are also working with Seaquest and Keep Wales Tidy on a Porthcawl Litter campaign. Our school council have organised charity events for Children in Need and NSPCC. They have compiled the school rules, updated the behaviour policy and worked with the community committee on the new surgery time capsule. Our Criw Cymraeg held a school mascot competition, lead Welsh assembly each Wednesday and have just begun running a Welsh fruit shop. Our Digital Leaders are Coding experts and have made games for other children to use. Representatives from each group make up the Ellitee Committee, which provides feedback to governors every term. Involving children in all areas of school life is great fun and teaches them that we can all make a real difference! Jo Rowley Head Teacher

Local news PORTHCAWL TOILET CLOSURE Porthcawl has gained some very unwelcome publicity since the New Year with coverage of the closure of the John Street toilets. There has been television and newspaper coverage of the fact that visitors and residents alike have been unable to spend a penny owing to BCBC’s decision to close them. One trader counted more than 1,000 people attempting to use the toilets in the space of a few hours one day. Thankfully, Porthcawl Town Council is stepping into the breach and is being given a licence to take them over. My concern lies in the fact that BCBC carried on with the closure even though they were drawing up this licence themselves claiming it would be ready by the end of the month. So it was only a matter of keeping the toilets open for a few more weeks so that there could be a seamless transfer without the inconvenience of no convenience. January can be tricky time for traders. People are spent out after Christmas and the traditional sales are less effective than they once were. Let’s hope the bad publicity hasn’t affected much needed trade. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

GO GREEN WITH YOUR GARDEN WASTE If you’re looking ahead to getting back in the garden after winter, why not register now for our garden waste recycling service which is returning this spring. Fortnightly collections make it possible to recycle garden waste including plants, flowers, weeds, grass, leaves and hedge clippings. Collections begin from Monday 18 March and continue up until Friday 15 November. If you sign up to the seasonal service before Sunday 31 March you’ll pay the early bird price of £28, while there’s a discounted rate of £24 for residents aged 60 and over. The easiest way to subscribe is online at https://bridgend.kier.co.uk. Fifty of the online applicants will be selected at random to receive a free service for 2019. We’re often asked why residents have to pay for the garden waste collection scheme. Because not all homes in the county borough have gardens, we believe it’s fairer to make it an optional scheme so only the homes that want to receive the collections can choose to pay for them. Another way of registering for garden waste collections is to call 01656 643643. Don’t forget that you also have the option of taking your garden waste to one of the community recycling centres. NEW MANAGEMENT FOR NATURE RESERVE Kenfig National Nature Reserve is set to gain new managers once the council’s lease runs out on 31 December 2019. We currently manage the reserve on behalf of its owners, the Kenfig Corporation Trust. Along with partners such as Natural Resources Wales, we’ll support the Trust as they transfer management over to a new organisation that can invest in the site, continue to enhance the overall visitor experience and ensure that it can remain financially sustainable. The ongoing budget pressures and a need to save millions of pounds put us in a position where we cannot renew the lease. However, we’re proud to have played a significant role in protecting the reserve’s many important habitats and making sure that the public has been able to enjoy its natural beauty. As it’s on our doorstep, it’s sometimes easy to forget what an amazing place Kenfig is. Its home to several rare species of animals and plants and is regarded as one of the finest examples of a sand dune habitat in Europe. We’ll do everything to ensure the site is in top condition ready for its handover, and I’m looking forward to the announcement of who the new managers will be. FOOD BANKS NEED OUR HELP ALL YEAR ROUND Over the Christmas period, as we gathered with friends and family to enjoy the festivities, we will have heard how hard food banks worked to ensure no family went without. The festive season can bring financial challenges and pressures, so our local food banks always run Christmas appeals. Last year the Trussell Trust ran a reverse advent calendar, in which food is given rather than received every day, and as a community Bridgend responded generously. Of course, people’s problems don’t disappear after the New Year. Last year, Bridgend Food Bank provided 6,141 emergency three-day food supplies to people in our community. Most of these financial emergencies, though, were unrelated to Christmas. According to the Trussell Trust, 42% of food bank visits were caused by complications with benefits, a problem which can strike at any time. And outside of December, food bank stocks tend to run low. Because of this it is important that, if we are in the position to do so, we try to keep these families in our thoughts. By donating outside the festive period, we can keep up the spirit of generosity throughout 2019.

PORTHCAWL MARITIME CENTRE What a fantastic start to 2019. Now that the plans for Porthcawl Maritime Centre have been approved by Bridgend councillors, it’s all systems GO! Credu Chief Executive Mark Bryant said, “This is so exciting for us and Porthcawl. A huge thank you to the team, as well as our supporters and partners who have helped to make this possible. We’re now working with Andrew Scott, our main contractor, to start the development.” The project is going to provide benefits to the local community as well as visitors to our lovely town. Alongside the Coastal Science and Discovery Centre, there’ll also be space in the main building for the Sea Cadets, the Welsh Surfing Federation, the harbourmaster’s offices and the armed forces charity, SSAFA. An outdoor performance space with seating and the option of a covered canopy is planned too offering a great facility for local groups, as well as those further afield. The project has been supported and funded by Visit Wales, the European Regional Development Fund, Big Lottery and NatWest Social & Community Capital. The site itself on Cosy Corner is owned by Bridgend council and will be leased to Credu Charity. Stuart Bentley, Credu Board Member and the Architectural & Design Consultant for the project said, “This will be an allweather, year-round base for maritime activities. It’s great for everyone in Porthcawl and is hugely gratifying for us to be part of Porthcawl’s transformation.”

BEACHES SAFER THANKS TO NEW CCTV CAMERAS We recently installed new CCTV cameras which will help make two Porthcawl beaches even safer. Positioned on Rest Bay and Newton Beach, the two cameras will be monitored remotely by volunteers from the National Coastwatch Institution at their station in the Old Pilot Lookout Tower next to Porthcawl Marina. They’ll work closely with RNLI lifeguards to keep a close watch on the sea and the water’s edge to spot anyone in distress. They’ll also report any safety incidents directly to the coastguard and emergency services. It’ll be reassuring for beach goers and sailors to know that an extra pair of eyes will be looking out for their safety in the water. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the National Coastwatch Institution for the excellent work they do. It’s coming up for two years since they were handed the keys to the iconic lookout tower following its restoration and it’s great to see the building being put to such fantastic use. Work is also progressing at Rest Bay on the new watersports centre and café/bistro. The closing date recently passed for potential tenants to tender their interest in running the facilities so please look out for further announcements soon. A clinking, jingling and rattling nearby And a friendly voice soothes and caresses fear With a whistle, a song and a pat. Time to move, time to toil, Along narrow passages, squeezing , pushing Into a rusty space that clatters With steel clad shoes. Six of us in there, unsure of ourselves and twitching. A jerk, a jolt and a bracing of legs As we struggle for balance. Sickening lurch of the stomach And a smoky pungency in the air. And then - first light - different Not lamplight or candles Dust sparkles and shimmers, caught in this light Shafting in through the slats of the cage. And In the distance, near the open cage Six loosed ponies, dirty and nervous Step gingerly onto the lush green grass. First light, too bright, first flight. Unsure and awkward, they snort and blow, Testing the dangerous ground with tiny baby steps. Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

Jackson is a sweet but sensitive four-year-old Chihuahua. A few visits to the centre will be needed to build up a relationship with him, and once he knows you he enjoys a fuss. Jackson must live with another dog already established in the home as this will help with his confidence and settling in. He enjoys his walks and having a good sniff around. He also loves his food, so this will help build up a relationship with him. Jackson is looking for a quiet adult only home with committed owners, and with time and patience you will start to see his funloving side. Canine Carer Heather says “Jackson may be small but inside is a huge personality which is endearing”. If you’d like to know more about Jackson, contact Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219; or pop down to the centre at Court Colman CF31 4NG. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES We are not always in control or our own circumstances. Whether we realise it or not we all live by faith of one kind or another. Whether you voted for or against, leaving the European Union, ‘Brexit’, will be a step into the unknown. So who are you putting your faith in; politicians, economic theories or maybe your own self-sufficiency ? For Christians what matters most is not the fact of our faith but the focus of our faith. Christian faith is not focused on other people or even ourselves, they too often let us down. Christian faith is focused on Jesus Christ the Son of God, who above all others reveal to us a loving Father in heaven. He gives us hope even in the most difficult circumstances of life. The bible says : “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6). As a wise old Christian once said: “I do not know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future”. Whatever challenging circumstances you may be facing - put your trust in God. Rev. TRINITY CHURCH After a busy Christmas we started the New Year with a special Epiphany Service. The music group and choir entertained us with a concert called Stargazers. This told the story of the three kings through songs and narration accompanied by soloists on the organ and flute. It was very entertaining and enjoyed by all the congregation and visitors. We appreciate all the hard work and effort from the music group and look forward to future events. Messy Church continues on the 3rd Sunday of the month between 2 and 4pm with children under 10 enjoying activities including painting, arts and crafts, games, stories and songs. All are welcome to attend this free activity and the children help prepare food which is then eaten at the end of the session. Our church hall and other smaller rooms are available for hire and many community groups already hold their functions here. For further details and how to book please consult our website. This also contains details of our other activities and Services. We also have a Facebook page and are always delighted to welcome visitors and new members to our church. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT You will be pleased to know that we now have a public access defibrillator outside the Talbot Community Centre. Pyle Community Council were delighted to provide funds for the purchase of both the defibrillator and cabinet as part of their plans to provide defibrillators at strategic points throughout the villages of Pyle and Kenfig Hill. The defibrillator at Talbot Community Centre is sited in the gated area at the side of the building. With the February blues hitting many readers now, it might be a timely reminder to promote what the Talbot Community Centre can offer ‘bored’ people in Kenfig Hill and district. In the Talbot Hall we have twice weekly lunches – Wednesday and Friday, and two bingo sessions each week - Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon. We have two computer classes (for the elderly) each week – Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in the Cynffig office. ABMU health board

Local pharmacies a convenien for getting protected against If you need a flu jab but can’t get to see your doctor, did you know you can simply call into your local pharmacy instead? Pharmacists are trained to give flu vaccinations and are a good option for people whose working hours or other commitments makes it difficult for them to get to their GP surgery. Pharmacies have longer opening hours than surgeries, And many open on weekends, and you CAN often walk in and get vaccinated without having to book an appointment. The convenience of the service is proving popular with patients across the ABMU Health Board area, with 96 out of 125 community pharmacies offering flu jabs. The vaccination is free to anyone aged over 65 and to at-risk groups like carers, pregnant women and people with some chronic health conditions. For everyone else it costs about £10 – a small price to pay to avoid the misery of flu symptoms. With the flu season now in full swing, please get vaccinated as soon as you can - even if you are not in one of the at-risk groups – to help protect yourself and avoid spreading it to others. This scheme is operating in the Porthcawl and Bridgend areas as well a.s Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Benjamin Rock, a pharmacist at Pearns Pharmacy, said: “We advise people to get their jabs early because it takes two weeks for the immunisation to become effective. “Everyone should get a vaccination because it not only protects you, but also your friends and family, some of whom may be vulnerable to infection. It also stops the bug being passed on by people in the street or on the bus.” At a local Lloyds Pharmacy, pharmacist Ian McGlashan has already given more than 300 flu jabs this season. He said: “Flu cases put tremendous pressure on hospitals and GP surgeries every winter, so pharmacies are helping to take some of that pressure off by preventing more people from catching flu and passing it on to others.” 40 | seaside news

Jeffrey Oldfield, 61, got his flu jab from Ian this year instead of at his GP surgery. He said: “I usually get vaccinated at the doctor’s and this is the first time I’ve had it at the chemist. I saw the signs in the shop at the beginning of October so I asked about it and Ian said: “I can do it here for you.” And I said: “When?” and he said: “Now!” Jeffrey is entitled to a free vaccination because he suffers from chronic respiratory disease. He said: “I have chronic asthma and whenever I get a cold I often get pneumonia or bronchitis and I’ve been hospitalised a few times with it. “I’ve been having a flu jab for about 10 years now though and since I’ve been having it I’ve been pretty good with fewer problems. “It’s been really convenient being able to come here for the jab instead of going to the doctor’s. You would be waiting in a queue there, and the surgery always seems very busy.” Ian said: “GPs normally run one or two flu clinics a week but if people can’t make it to one of those, they find it handy to be able to pop in here, especially as we are open from 8.30-6pm

nt option flu

Time for your flu jab

Public Health Wales analyses flu strains each year and decides what should go in the vaccine. The contents of the flu jab are determined by which viruses caused the most problems in southern hemisphere countries like Australia during their winter, as the virus travels north. Ian said: “There are two different injections this year, one for the under 65s and one for the over 65s. We have good supplies of both. “It’s vital at-risk groups have the jab, but also anyone else should have it to protect themselves and others. “Flu is very contagious and it can kill.” Important facts Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday. “Most people just walk in and have the vaccination there and then but we can also make appointments.” Pharmacists are fully trained to deliver the injections and undergo an online assessment every year and face-to-face training every two years with qualified nurses. “Vaccinations are given in a private room and before we go ahead we take people through an online form to make sure it is safe to administer it to them,” said Ian. “We check for any allergies and if anyone did have an allergic reaction, we are fully trained in resuscitation. “I have been giving vaccinations for almost 10 years and the same people come back every autumn because they find the service so quick and convenient.” If you are worried about any side effects of the jab, Ian has reassuring words: “Some people get mild soreness on the arm for 24-48 hours after the injection, but on the whole it’s pretty well received. “It’s a myth that the vaccination can give you flu because there are no live viruses in the injection. It’s possible to catch flu after you’ve had the injection because it takes up to two weeks to become effective.

• The pharmacy vaccination service is available to the over-18s. Parents should take children to their GP. • NHS flu vaccinations are available from pharmacies from 1 October – 31 March. • Free flu injections are available at pharmacies to people with: - chronic respiratory disease - diabetes - chronic heart disease - neurological disease - pregnancy - kidney disease - morbid obesity - immunosuppression or living with someone with immunosuppression - chronic liver disease • Flu vaccinations are also available free to pregnant women, carers, long term care home residents, and staff working in adult care homes. • During winter 2017/18, 2,680 flu patients were admitted to Welsh hospitals and 192 ended up in intensive care. • Click here to see if your local pharmacy is providing the service: https://tinyurl.com/ycnynvd8

“And no vaccination is ever 100% guaranteed because viruses can mutate. “That is why it is important to get a jab every year because the virus is constantly adapting.” seaside news | 41

Club features TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION

PORTHCAWL RNLI VOLUNTEERS REFLECT ON 2018

This is Mohammed Augustine. In 2015 he set up a carpentry and building business in Sierra Leone with the help of Tools for Self Reliance. The business is now thriving and has now expanded enabling him to employ seven additional employees. This means that seven morel families are benefitting from a sustainable income and are breaking the poverty for themselves and their families. This would not have been possible without your help, donating tools to our workshop in Porthcawl or the fund raising to enable training to be given as part of the many projects in African countries. These projects give people the opportunity to invest in themselves with vocational skills and the equipment to transform their lives and the lives of the community. Tools for Self Reliance would like to thank the many people who have donated tools, also the people who have left them at the Sussed Shop. If you have old tools of any kind you can contact us if you would like to deliver to our workshop or we can collect from your home. Porthcawl lifeboat crews launched their lifeboats 120 times in response to incidents during the year. Casualties varied widely from surfers, windsurfers, broken down vessels and persons cut off by the incoming tide. Deputy Launch Authority, Stephen Jones, commented, ‘2018 was our busiest year ever for shouts and there appeared no common reason for the high numbers of incidents. Even the hot summer weather alone could not be blamed. Besides being on standby 24/7, for 365 days of the year our volunteer crews’ train each Sunday morning and Wednesday evening to build and maintain the skills required to meet casualty needs. Recently, 12 crew attended an intensive three-day First Aid and Casualty Care course held at Porthcawl; all twelve were successful and received the relevant RNLI certificates’. Phil Missen MBE, Lifeboat Operation Manager said, “As always we have worked with other emergency services on many of our launches and this teamwork is essential in helping those who find themselves in danger on our beaches or at sea. As a busy station we are always having to review our personnel needs and I would encourage anyone interested and living in Porthcawl to view our website, www.porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk for details of becoming a RNLI volunteer.”

DISTANT SPACECRAFT In 2006, NASA launched its New Horizons spacecraft towards the edge of the Solar System, primarily to visit the enigmatic dwarf planet Pluto. It arrived in 2015 and enabled scientists to accurately map the surface of the planet and photograph all five of its moons. The spacecraft was indirectly responsible for discovering the four smallest of them - Styx, Kerberos, Nix and Hydra. It’s hard to believe, but New Horizons is travelling at a speed of 336,000 mph. No other man-made object has moved at such a breathtaking speed, or visited such a distant object. Most of Pluto’s orbit lies within the Kuiper Belt, which is an enormous family of asteroids that are found beyond Neptune. So far over 3000 have been discovered but astronomers believe that more than a million might exist. On January 1st this year, New Horizons flew past Ultima Thule, a small Kuiper Belt Object that had only been discovered in 2014. Early data suggests the asteroid is shaped like a peanut and almost certainly the result of a collision between two objects. Ultima Thule is so distant, it has not been contaminated by sunlight and has remained unchanged since the Solar System began. Clive Down FRAS 42 | seaside news

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 2018 was our busiest year since opening. Our total of 62 incidents represented a 40% increase over the 2017 figures and made us the second busiest station in the UK for the second year running. In January 2019 we have been involved in a Mayday call, a hazard to small craft and a paddle boarder caught in a rip at Rest Bay. Our hours extend slightly at the end of January to 1700hrs, then increasing gradually in accordance with longer daylight hours. From May to the end of August, we will be operating daily from 0900hrs to 2100hrs. We have a major fundraising event on Thursday, March 28th at the Grand Pavilion - a choral evening featuring Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir, their youth choir “Crescendo” and the children’s choir “Da Capo”. The evening also features special guest soloist Charlotte Vaughan (who appeared in the West End production “Phantom of the Opera”) and is compered by Mr Dean Powell. Tickets are available from the Grand Pavilion Box Office. Porthcawl NCI is volunteer-run and self-funding, relying on such events to allow us to provide our coastal surveillance facility in Porthcawl. We thank you once again for your support. PORTHCAWL TOWN TWINNING

T’was a busy festive season for the Porthcawl Town Twinning Association. First, our Craft Fair held at Trinity Church, which raised muchneeded funds for hosting our French friends this summer, then, came our Christmas meal at the Hi Tide. We were serenaded by the Catwg Hand bell Ringers pealing out our favourite Christmas numbers. Their repertoire included a have a go spot, and it’s not as easy as it looks. Following dinner, we sang Jingle Bells in French Vive le Vent and a highly original rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas. LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS

The birth of Robert Burns (poet and lyricist) famed for writing ‘Auld Lang Syne’, sung to ring in a New Year, and ‘A Red, Red Rose’ (amongst others) is celebrated the world over on the 25th January each year. Burns Night is marked by many Lions Clubs throughout the United Kingdom, and with over 24000 people of Scottish descent living in Wales, it is easy to understand why it is such an important event in the Principality. Nowhere more so than in Porthcawl, where Porthcawl Lions have a number of members and ‘friends’ who are of Scottish heritage, and Burns Night traditionally heralds the start of our new year work. It was good to see tartan clad attendees, including Lion members, guests and supporters of the Porthcawl Museum, as well as the town’s Mayor Cllr. Norah Clarke, gather at the Hi Tide Porthcawl. They witnessed Piper John Campbell piping in the Haggis, at the start of a night of traditional food, poetry, dancing and song. Proceeds from the evening’s raffle were donated to the Museum, which the Lions have supported for many years. For more on the work of Porthcawl Lions Club, please visit http://porthcawllions.org.uk/index.html

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH In our already overcrowded lives, space is always being taken away. When I was learning to type, I was taught that you should have two spaces after a full stop. Now we are told that one space is sufficient, for efficiency’s sake. Is an extra space simply too much? I think we need more space, not less. J.R.R. Tolkien told a story of coming upon a blank page among a student’s assignment. He stared at it for a moment and then wrote upon it, “In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.” It just came to him like a revelation. And that’s how he started the book that lead to The Lord of the Rings trilogy. All he needed was that little space between all of those words. Likewise, God’s Holy Spirit can work wonders in the little spaces of our lives. God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees, Nottage Chapel

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB

PORTHCAWL AND THE JENKIN HENRY TEA

Over the last year it’s been amazing for the Porthcawl Stroke Club, community support is helping in all directions. So we thank everyone who has and are supported us, we are extremely grateful, everything is very much appreciated and like you we put back into the community where we can. In the picture left to right, are Mr Keith Duggan Chairman, Mrs Mary Duggan Secretary, Mandy Brownsell and Mr Frank Fulgoni. Frank Fulgoni presented a cheque of £250 on behalf of the Porthcawl Horticultural Society. Christmas we were given a wonderful treat by the Porthcawl Mayor Cllr Norah Clarke and colleagues who waited on us hand and foot, a Christmas lunch at the Ancient Britton, Newton. There was Father Christmas and presents!! It was such a jolly time, everyone send his or her thanks for all the hard work. Our thanks also go to all involved, landlord, landlady and staff. On behalf of the Porthcawl Stroke club. Barbara Matthews

Every year Porthcawl Town Council (PTC) hosts the Jenkin Henry Tea for 20 residents who were born in Porthcawl. The recipients from a short list aged between 65 and 95 were invited to the Grand Pavilion and were served a cream tea after being entertained by Rob and Ann Taylor of Porthcawl Museum with an illustrated talk on RAF Stormy Down during the 2nd World War. Each was presented with a certificate and gift bag by Deputy Mayor Cllr Graham Walter, Cllr Sean Aspey and Deputy Town Clerk Sarah Watkins. Jenkin Henry was born in the town in 1833, before emigrating at an early age to Australia where he became a successful adjuster and owner of weighbridges. He never forgot his hometown and on his death in 1919 he made a bequest of £200 to the then Porthcawl UDC with instructions that the interest was distributed at Christmas. PDC continued with the instructions of the bequest ever since providing the tea each year. PDC have asked that if you think you or some one you know may be eligible to be a recipient please contact the Town Clerk. David Swidenbank

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q) I intend to apply to the Court to sort out my financial settlement with my husband. What can I expect? A) In Divorce proceedings, the Court has the power to make various orders for financial relief. You must complete what is known as a Form A Application and pay the requisite Court fee. Once the application has been issued, both parties have to complete a Form E Statement which provides an overview of each party’s financial circumstances. Both parties are under a duty to give full disclosure of their financial positions during the proceedings. The Form E Statements are served and filed with the Court in readiness for the First Directions Hearing. In accordance with the Court Order, both parties must also file what is known as a Chronology, Questionnaire and Statement of Issues. The First Court Hearing is known as a First Directions Appointment and takes place usually within 12 weeks of the Application being issued by the Court. At this hearing, each party’s respective legal advisors and the District Judge will consider whether all directions have been complied with, what further information may be required and if there is a possibly of settling. In the absence of any settlement, the Judge lists the case for a Financial Dispute Resolution hearing usually eight weeks later at which the Judge can give an indication as to how the case should settle. If there is no agreement, the application is set down for a Final Contested Hearing usually around three months later at which both parties will have to give oral evidence of their positions. The District Judge will then make a final decision on the division of assets which is binding upon both parties. The whole process can generally take 6- 9 months to complete. THE WORLD’S BIGGEST DIVORCE It was recently announced that the Amazon boss Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie were to divorce after a 25 year marriage. This divorce has the potential to become the most expensive in history as the couple live in Washington State which has communal property laws which require assets and debts obtained during the marriage to be split equally. Because the couple were married before Amazon was founded, it is likely that MacKenzie holds a large claim to the family fortune of $137 billion. If the fortune is split equally, it would mean Bezos would lose his title as world’s richest man. This is in contrast to the law of England and Wales which has no such power to direct how property acquired during a marriage is to be split. If a couple cannot agree on how they will divide their assets, then a judge will make that decision for them after hearing evidence from both sides. The court will base its decision on recent case law, or simply put, what directions have been given by the higher courts. A judge must arrive at a decision which meets the needs of both Parties and which is fair and equal. Some factors would mean that one party receives a larger share of the asset pool, for example if they have a lower income, or primary care of any dependent children. Generally, the court will not allow the contributions of one party to be ring-fenced. Given the differences in US and UK law, it is hard to predict how a British court would deal with the case of Mr and Mrs Bezos, and we are unlikely to find out as rumour has it that the couple have reached a private agreement which will not be made public. DIVORCE FINANCES At this time of year, we often see an increase in divorce and separation, whether it is due to pressures over the Christmas period or people wanting a fresh start in the New Year. At DJM, we wish to make this process as straightforward and cost effective as possible for our client’s. To divorce, you must show that your marriage has irretrievably broken down. This will be based on one of five ‘facts’. The five facts of divorce are: 1. Adultery: Your spouse has committed adultery and you find it intolerable to continue living with him or her. 2.Unreasonable behaviour: there can include domestic abuse, infidelity or persistent unpleasantness. 3.Desertion: Your spouse deserted you against your will, and you have been living apart for at least two years. 4.Two years’ separation: You have been separated for at least two years, and you both agree to the divorce. 5.Five years’ separation: You have been separated for at least five years. You must also have been married for at least a year to divorce. Similar rules apply for ending a registered civil partnership. Where possible, you should agree between yourselves who will petition for the divorce and what the grounds for divorce will be. Finances will need to be agreed as a result of the marriage breakdown. Interim agreements can be made subject to a final agreement. The first priority is to look after the welfare and financial needs of any children. The parent who no longer lives with the children will normally provide financial support, known as child maintenance. The other key factors into account include: • Each spouse’s income • Any pension entitlements • Each spouse’s financial needs. • How long you have been married and how old each spouse is. The right agreement for you will depend on your circumstances and objectives. As a starting point, you should both fully disclose your financial positions to each other. Once you have reached an agreement, you should apply to the Court for a Consent Order. This allows the court to check that the agreement you have reached is fair to both parties. It also limits the ability of either spouse to make a claim against future income, capital and acquired assets. If you cannot reach agreement between yourselves, you will need to apply to the Court for a Financial Order. Natalie Thomas DJM Solicitors 01656 772211 www.djm.law.co.uk

Women’s institutions PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL

Hello from all of our Inner Wheel group. I don’t think there are many of us that like this part of the year. We in I.W. strive to be positive. Organising a birthday party is part of this month’s agenda. It is 95 years since Margaret Golding started the first group in 1924. We are all proud to belong to and carry on this tradition here in Porthcawl. The money raised in November’s coffee morning was donated to Wales air ambulance. The cheque was presented by President Carol and a few members of our group at the air ambulance station. We were made very welcome by the pilots and staff at Morfa, Cardiff, Carol even sat in the helicopter lucky girl. Our next meeting is in the Grove Golf club on Tuesday the 5th of February. NEWTON WI

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

Our first WI meeting for 2019 was held on Wednesday Jan. 2nd. We were warmly welcomed and wished a happy New Year by our President Jennifer. The GF WI business was discussed and birthdays announced. Special Birthday congratulations go to our Secretary Glenys Griffiths who unfortunately was unable to be with us. The entertainment for the evening was given by a very talented dance duo, ‘Mia and Luca’. They were superb, thrilling us all with their amazing display of Latin American dance routines. We wish them luck and great success in the future. The Edna Jones Competition Cup was won for the second consecutive year by Gill George. Well done Gill. Although Christmas seems far away now, we held our Carol Service on December 12th. The Rev. Martin Gillard officiated, it was a lovely service of readings, poems and carols, ending the evening with tea and minced pies. We are looking forward to all the exciting events planned for 2019. So why not come and join us on the first Wednesday of every month at Gilgal Baptist Church Hall, Woodland Avenue, Porthcawl at 7pm. M Freeman

Tuesday 8th January and we were once again in our usual meeting place The Talbot Center Kenfig Hill. Christmas and New Year over, time to look forward to what the WI has in store for us. Several walks in the spring to get us up and out, the Glamorgan show in the summer with enough categories for all to try. Scrabble and interest groups on going. It’s our anniversary in February so our next meeting will be special, cake and wine to celebrate and our speaker is Lillian Charles her topic History of Gin perhaps we’ll have samples who knows. Our fund raising last year for friends of Mynydd Cynffig was Motor Neutron and our donation was presented to their representative in our monthly meeting. This year we voted for our local Stroke Club, our members give generously last year and I’m sure this year will be no exception. If this year goes as quickly as last year we shall all be busy and hopefully just as enjoyable. Interested in meeting us pop in for a chat, tea and biscuits always on hand. Christine Callaghan.

Business & finance VALUE OF HOUSING STOCK AT RECORD LEVEL – PROTECT IT! The first regional housing value analysis of 2019 has been issued, looking at the picture for 2018 just ended has just been released at the time of writing this article. The value of housing stock rose by £190billion, or 2.7%, to £7.29trillion, with the private rented sector rising faster than other tenures, up 4.1% to £1.56bn, according to analysis released by real estate adviser Savills. The report found that gains came from the regional markets, as London’s residential stock recorded a 1.5% fall, the first since 2009, losing £26.2bn. Over a quarter of the total £190bn value increase came from new housing development, the highest proportion contributed by new housing development since 2011, reflecting the government focus on building more new homes. Across the UK as a whole, price appreciation added a total £138bn, 72% of total gains, equivalent to average growth of £4,800 per home. Equity now totals £1.32trn, leaving total borrowing at fewer than 14%, as the residential investment sector becomes increasingly dominated by cash investors. On a purely regional basis, Wales was the region showing the biggest gains in percentage terms, with housing value up 6.3%, adding £13.4bn to total £226.1bn, which should bring a degree of comfort to homeowners and property owners generally this side of the River Severn. Lawrence Bowles, UK residential research analyst at Savills added: “We see that wealth concentrated in ever fewer, older hands, to the extent that the UK’s over 50s hold a quarter of all UK homeowner equity and this is reflected in the fact that the releasing of equity to help those trying to get on the ladder, has grown to some £3.7bn, as bank of Mum and Dad and Grandparents provide this support. Now protecting residential property assets is of the utmost importance as taxation and local authority interests can very easily erode and have a detrimental effect on people’s hard earned assets if given the opportunity to do so, where the right circumstances prevail. One way of doing this is to secure some expert advice on property protection trusts and we can now offer our clients access to this facility via certain industry partners. Please call us for a chat about finding out from the experts exactly what YOU can do to protect your property assets.

BREXIT AND YOUR MONEY How can you protect your assets from the inevitable volatility over the coming months leading up to Britain’s exit from the EU, if it ever happens? Well, the simple answer is you do nothing if you’re invested for the long term, but at the same time it’s very important to spread your investment risk and not put all your faith in one investment fund, as this is a sure way of limiting the growth of your assets. People need to take advice, even if they have to pay for it and it’s much cheaper than the alternative. Someone once told me ‘school fees are expensive but ignorance costs more’! Everyone’s investment needs vary so much, but the most important factor is down to your time horizon for investing and vulnerable clients are generally the ones invested for the short term. Remember, when global markets collapsed over 30%+ post credit crunch 2008/09, they recovered in less than two years, but investors that needed access to their money in that period were the ones affected the most! What was a painful lesson that many learned from that time was selling their stocks & shares ISAs & investments bonds at the wrong time. This lost them money and if they had just been patient and done nothing, then all would have been well. Human nature makes us do irrational things; it’s a herd instinct to be avoided. Typically, a pension fund that’s fully invested in the stock market could suffer a drop just before retirement and many people don’t know where their money’s invested to avoid this pitfall, so contact us to review your funds if you don’t want any nasty shocks! The same for stocks & shares ISAs, which might have made strong gains in recent years. If you need to access these funds in the near future you can lock in your gains and avoid any potential falls by taking advice on de-risking without having to cash in and lose valuable benefits. A client’s timeline for investment is one of the most important factors in the advice process; so if you need any advice on reviewing your investments, speak to us at Abacus Assurance Financial Services Ltd, Coedargraig House, Porthcawl. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

Our new club year began with a very interesting and entertaining talk last month from Kevin Thomas on the subject of twelve months in a small greenhouse. We are very fortunate in having a number of regular speakers whose horticultural skill and expertise is demonstrated through their ability to speak on a number of interesting topics. Within the next few weeks our plants are going to arrive for growing on for the annual plant sale. Members have already begun to sow seeds for the sale and some of us are carefully nurturing herbaceous perennials that were propagated within the last two years. So the growing season has well and truly started! In our gardens and plots at home the next few months can be fairly treacherous with the days still short and very cold weather likely at any time. Who can forget the ‘Beast from the East’ last year and all the challenges that brought! One of the greatest delights of this time of year is watching spring emerging in all its various shapes and forms – Snowdrops about to finish and crocus popping up everywhere. Perhaps, at this time of year the key word is anticipation? New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk Joyce Pegg

‘While it is February one can taste the joys of anticipation, spring stands at the gate with her finger on the latch’ (patience strong). Although ‘winter is nature’s way of saying up yours!’ (Robert Byrne) However the bulbs are already up in a lovely optimistic way and it’s time to get a head start on sowing seed for vegetables and flowers! There is something magical in planting tiny seeds and watching them grow into a healthy plants, to stop them going leggy make sure they have enough light, little seedlings stretching for the light is not a good start in life! Sprinkle a little cinnamon on your seed tray, to prevent fungal disease, Cinnamon is marvellous in the garden, plants love it, houseplants included. If you are plagued with wild mushrooms or ants, cinnamon is the answer; sprinkled on a damaged leaf will even help the plant heal itself Top dress your pot-grown shrubs, remove about an inch of the old soil and then add new compost for a boost, they’ll love it! Did you know – the third week in February is National Chip Week! Blow Valentine’s Day; give me chips over roses any day! Chris Early

Saturday dates are: 16th February 6th April 17th June 26th August 30th September We’re also looking for volunteers to help us out at the charity ball at The Bear in Cowbridge and also on the Valley to Coast Walk.

I write this column from the assumed comfort of my own home. Christmas has passed. Terrible events have unfolded in front of my very eyes, many of my work colleagues are emotionally hurting and so am I. Late night working with little rest. The mind shuts down; words are missed, discussions forgotten about. Concentration wanes. Powerful stressors of the past, come back. The mind is reactive, short and snappy. There is a yearning for hiding, for escape. In this troubled mind, there is a demand for softness. Yet this demand can be problematic alcohol, painkillers, medication. The world is a closing tunnel at the moment. So, what do I do? What’s my strategy? Positive thinking? Cathartic release? Talking to someone? Mindfulness and awareness of suffering exist full stop. What did the Buddha do when the environment became troubled? Gathering his robe, he walked in the forest, observing nature and losing this powerful sense of identification. On our doorstep, the crashing of waves, the solitude of Newton Dunes. Walking in silence, nature has stabilised this heart and mind. Walking with family, the impermanent mental woes fall away. There is nothing to do, no reaction. Mind is simply known. Retreating for a while and resting. Neville Evans

FASTING Fasting is the oldest dietary intervention in the world. Modern science confirms it can have a profoundly beneficial influence on your health, including efficient weight loss, reversal of type 2 diabetes and more. Fasting and starvation are not the same. Fasting is voluntary and you can start or stop at any time while starvation is forced with no alternative. Contrary to popular belief, water fasting is safe for most people. Groups that should NOT fast include those who are underweight or malnourished, children and pregnant or breastfeeding women. Read more at www.mercola.com/articles Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke Did I also mention we’ve got hoodies now too? We all think they’re lush. They’re £20 each and are in the charity colour which is purple and also a grey colour. If you would like one please do get in touch via the website. www.costofcancer.org.uk. Speak to you all soon. concerts with our two youth choirs, Crescendo and Da Capo, who continue to flourish with their musical team of Kathryn Blight and Rhian Davies to lead them. In January we welcome our new accompanist Elisabeth Scourfield-Jones who we are delighted to have on board. Elisabeth has a wealth of experience and will be a valuable addition to our very talented musical team. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/ KHMVC/ on our website at www.kenfigwelshmalechoir.org.uk or contact the secretary Tony Ulberini at tonyulberini@gmail.com Tel: 07866 742452 Dave Xerri Publicity & Media Officer

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The Choir has recovered from the Christmas Carol season, which culminated at The Globe Inn where £352.68 was raised for Ty Hafan. Chairman Howard Evans and Ladies section member Theresa Cummings are pictured with Ty Hafan representatives on the night. We were pleased to welcome Ian Williams as a full member over Christmas and hopefully he will be joined shortly by Dean, Glen and Noel, who are working hard to join the ranks. The Choir learned of the death of founder member Ray Dixon on Boxing Day who will be sadly missed but left some great memories for us to treasure. Rehearsals are up and running for 2019 with several weddings and a trip to Polperro on the horizon. A Race Night is planned on the 22nd February where a great night is in store for all at Porthcawl Rugby Club. A fundraiser for LATCH is also planned on the 15th February at The Seahorse in Porthcawl. Resplendent in our new polo shirts kindly sponsored by choir member Brian Thomas, the Choir has returned after the Christmas break with yet more new members joining us at the start of an exciting year ahead. We are looking forward to our first major concert, which will be on St David’s Day at our usual venue in the Cornelly Community Centre. The Choir is in great demand this year with at least one concert every month already booked as well as some collaborations with other choirs from other parts of the UK and Ireland and a tour away to sing at the wonderful Selby Abbey. We also look forward to some joint 56 | seaside news

I picked up Michael Powell’s autobiography – A Life In Movies – the other day, having previously read it some time ago. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the name, Michael Powell is arguably the finest film director this country has ever produced, especially during his collaborative years with Emeric Pressburger. I was reminded of his opinion that the days of true cinema vanished when sound films came into being in the late 1920s, before which audiences could only see silent pictures – except that they were not really silent at all because there was usually live musical accompaniment with sound effects produced in the movie theatre. But the cinematic language of the silent film was truly international, supported by screen captions, which could easily be translated to suit the country in which the film was being screened. It might seem primitive now, but it was very effective. With the advent of sound, British cinema became almost completely subservient to the Americans and has largely remained so ever since, although the rest of Europe was able to retain a degree of cultural independence. Even so, Michael Powell’s films stand for a quintessential Britishness. Whenever you get a chance, watch them. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK As you probably know I always like to see what’s coming up in the future to cheer us music lovers up at this time of the year. The Manic Street Preachers will play Cardiff Castle on Saturday 29th June as an anniversary of their biggest and, in my view, best album ‘This is My Truth, Tell Me Yours’. Released in 1998, it sold over two million copies, spawned their first number one single and won them two Brit Awards for best band and album. Wales’s other favourite sons, The Stereophonics, will also play a special big Welsh concert at Swansea’s Singleton Park. It’s a grand venue and I performed there in the mid 1990s when I supported Jools Holland and Bonnie Tyler. Get your tickets for both events soon! Ex-Bullet For My Valentine drummer, Bridgend’s ‘Moose’ Thomas, is back with new band Kill The Lights and a great new single “The Faceless” – check it out. Finally, it’s good to see Porthcawl’s Seahorse back open and supporting live music again. I wish landlord Joe Williams and staff all the best for the future and will drop down for a beer soon. Keep your news coming. Stag Marks Tel: 07549 728356 Photo: James Dean Bradfield of the Manics

COR BRO OGWR’S ANNIVERSARY CONCERT An evening of celebration, happy memories and heartfelt singing! In spite of the disappointing absence of our Conductor Emeritus, Alun John OBE, due to illness, choir, soloists and orchestra gave a rousing performance. The pieces, chosen from concerts, trips and conductors over the years, had been resurrected and newly polished by conductor Rosie Howarth, and Alun, who managed to fit in some rehearsals of the pieces he had chosen before the concert itself. We welcomed back our popular tenor from our early days, Richard Allen. We all loved his rendition of “Roses of Picardy”, where the choir and audience quietly joined in the chorus. His career has gone from strength to strength and he is much in demand for his opera, oratorio and concert work. Our soprano soloist, Erin Alexander, is now becoming a firm favourite with the choir. She is studying in Florence and set to perform in a number of operas in 2019. Our baritone, Jack Bowtell, is currently studying for his Masters in Operatic Performance under Donald Maxwell. We are fortunate to have such talented musicians, continuing our commitment to supporting young musicians. www.cor-bro-ogwr.com and on Facebook. Dominique Spearey

BROADWAY CHORUS SINGS FOR BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION Porthcawl’s Broadway Chorus presented its Christmas Concert in All Saints Church in December. Congratulations to members of the choir who raised a remarkable £1,700 for the British Heart Foundation. Sing Christmas was conducted by Michael Plowman and Liz York, and the enthusiastic audience was treated to a fine selection of seasonal songs and popular Carols. Phil Juliff accompanied the chorus, with soloists Catherine Mayer (flute) and Angharad Edwards (harp). Also taking part was Shannon Davies – Evans, who sang a beautiful arrangement of Nadolig? Pwy a Wyr by Ryan Davies. Music from a variety of composers was performed during the evening, including items by Carl Davies, John Williams, Gustav Holst and John Rutter. As well as uplifting music, there was mulled swine and mince pies to enjoy. The chorus is grateful to all those who joined them in All Saints to support the British Heart Foundation.

REST BAY LIFEGUARD

SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB Welcome to the Nipper Section Our club’s Nipper section (Age 8-13) has over 80 children. As a Nipper your child will be taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills, surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, boardpaddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays).

The emphasis is on fun in a friendly environment. During winter we also run lifesaving training sessions at local pools. We also take part in the various competitions in which teams and individuals can participate – However no child is forced to compete. The children also work towards various national surf safety awards, which include both sports and lifesaving elements.

Now recruiting

Rest Bay Nippers are now recruiting boys and girls born 2006-2011. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have loads of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.

Have fun, learn lifesaving skills and build friendships for life. If you would like more information please contact: Nipper coordinator: Melanie Taylor - 07792 107340 64 | seaside news

email your sport report info@seasidenews.co.uk Division 2. Matt Thomas played number 1 string, supported by Chris Chappell, Rob Harding, Chris Martin, Gareth Jones and Ian Kavanagh. Overall, it’s been a very successful season, with Porthcawl punching well above its weight in Wales Squash. If you’re interested in joining our club to play socially or competitively and watch some quality team matches, then please contact Club Secretary Peter Wells on 07932 173993. Kevin Cullinan

Send us your sports news. email: info@seasidenews.co.uk The start to the year has already brought some success for Porthcawl Runners’ two current club champions. It came in the fun Festive Four competition, where runners select races from a choice of seven events and is based on Tour de France style categories, combining the results of four stages. The competition was open to all members from running clubs within the 2018 Bridgend County Running League and culminated with the compulsory four-miler on New Year’s Day from the Prince of Wales in Kenfig. Deb Roberts was third lady of the Bridgend clubs, while Dave Bennett was fourth man in the category for quickest accumulated time over the four events. Deb also bagged the first female vet prize at the Run4All Neath Santa Run and was also second senior female. Ahead of this month’s Llanelli half marathon, there was also an excellent club turnout for the round the reservoir cross-country run at Margam last month, including some of the recent C25K graduates. ICE SWIM CHAMPIONSHIPS

On 5th/6th January, some of Porthcawl’s very own polar bears travelled to Doncaster to compete in the British Ice Swimming Championships. Each swimmer had to swim 1km in water which measured 5.5c on the day in a standard swim costume and cap only! Every swimmer had to have full medicals, a helper and the event had very strict safety criteria as this type of swimming can be very dangerous. Training everyday at Coney beach obviously paid off for the team with Heidi Brice claiming third female overall and age group winner, Tom Chapman winning his age group and 5th male overall, Alistair Tazer-Bell was 6th male and 2nd in age group and Lewis Brown won his age group and placed 16th male overall! Top swimming guys and thanks to all the support crew who travelled up with us! Tom Chapman
