DISGRACEFUL SITUATION

FIVE PRECEPTS OF BUDDHISM

Dear Editor, I thought I must share this with your readers as it is something that must be raised for the sake of anybody requiring urgent medical attention. Recently, when visiting Porthcawl John Street we noticed a poor elderly lady lying on the road having collapsed. A number of good Samaritans were providing help and reassurance and some warmth, as it was very cold, using coats and some aluminium foil from a local retailer. I inquired if there was anything I could do provide a hot drink etc but was told the lady could not be moved and had been vomiting. Also the ambulance had been called a number of times. As there was nothing more I could do I went on my way to do some shopping. Around 40 minutes later on my way back to catch the bus the lady was still in the same place. I decided to see if the Police could help( as you know the local station is closed as is the local ambulance station). I went to the Police station as there was a Police car outside on the off chance. Luckily an off duty Policeman was there and I informed him of the situation. He said he may not be able to help but would try . We hear of this situation everyday of people waiting for ambulances or not getting appropriate care in hospital. Isn’t it about time something urgent is done and that politicians own up to their mistakes. Local MP’s surely can help but for an old lady to be left in the situation I describe it is totally unacceptable to be still waiting an hour and a half for an ambulance in the freezing cold. It must be brought to everybody’s attention. Graham Pearce, Porthcawl

Dear Editor , Neville Evans gives us Five precepts of Buddhism (December and January Seaside News). The book ‘What is Buddhism?’, published by the Buddhist Lodge, London, answers: “If by atheist you mean one who rejects the concept of a personal God, we are”. It goes on to say: “A growing mind can easily digest the idea of a Universe guided by unswerving Law, as it can the concept of a distant Personage that it may never see who dwells it knows not where, and who has at some time created out of nothing a Universe which is permeated by enmity, injustice, inequality of opportunity, and endless suffering and strife”. Thus, in theory, Buddhism does not advocate belief in God and yet , where Buddhism is practiced, images and relics of Buddha’s have become objects of devotion by devout Buddhists. Your views PORTHCAWL COMMUNITY NATURE Dear Editor, I am a resident of Beach Road, Newton and have lived here for 12.5 years. I’m originally from Pontllanfraith in the Sirhowy Valley, but moved back to Wales (Newton) almost 20 years after leaving The Land of my Fathers’ to attend University and pursue job opportunities. I’m married with 2 kids; Emily whom is 16 and Thomas whom is 7 years old. I’ve always had a passion for nature and learned a great deal from my Bampi, a railway inspector who eventually worked in the South Wales valleys. I used to spend most weekends and my summer holidays with my grandparents in Llandaff, a village immediately above Abercarn in the Ebbw valley. Several local friends share my passion for nature and, after small adventures with their kids in the dunes, the woods and on Newton and Rest Bay beaches, have sometimes encouraged me to create some content to share. Therefore, between the Christmas and New Year period, I created a Facebook group entitled “Porthcawl Community Nature”. Having invited 30 or so direct friends, membership of the group started to grow steadily. As I write this, the group is 362 members strong, with new members joining on a daily basis. Many members are sharing content; photos; videos; ideas for making things (dens, ponds eta); ideas for doing things (autumn treasure hunts and collecting sea glass), details of local events etc. My full time job is as a Senior Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at Cardiff Met Uni. I complete a great deal of work in the area of

Aspects of our current research focuses upon the rehabilitation of military veterans whom are either wounded, injured and/or sick. My colleagues and I are all too familiar with the benefits of physical activity to health and wellbeing - from a physical as well as mental health perspective. Engagement in physical activity (e.g. walking) in a natural setting ( e.g. the Coastal Pathway) is especially effective in the context of improving fitness, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety and depression. One of the aims of the local Fb group is to inspire others to engage more with nature and, in doing so, become more active. There have already been proposals for members to go on star gazing walks together and to help each other build garden ponds. The dynamics of the group have great potential to create new opportunities for social engagement, to get local people more active to help improve or retain independence and, ultimately, improve overall quality of life. Local history THE MILITARY COMES TO PORTHCAWL

Part 1 The major failure experienced by the British Army in the Second Boer War 1899, exposed the lack of numbers available for overseas service in times of crisis. Apart from regular forces, all other units were maintained for home defence against possible invasion. Volunteer forces, such as the Yeomanry, Volunteer Force and Militia were recruited locally and underwent annual training. By the end of the 19th century, Porthcawl was becoming a popular base for such summer training. At 3pm on Saturday 5th August 1889 550 1st Voluntary Brigade South Wales Borderers marched into the town with their colours aloft and pitched camp “on an elevated piece of land westward of Mr James Brogden’s house, (Seabank today) close to the shore.” The following year 650 Breconshire volunteers arrived and also “pitched camp at a most picturesque spot.” By 1896 there is reference to Summer camps being established at Newton. One of the most significant training exercises took place on 10th August 1895. The Battle of Ogmore was a manoeuvre that involved the mobilisation of many South Wales Voluntary Battalions defending against an imaginary invasion at Swansea. Porthcawl hosted some of the units prior to their march on Margam. In 1898 the town council invited the military to recognise Porthcawl as a regular training base. Ceri Joseph

FILMMAKING AT PORTHCAWL MUSEUM

At the museum we have been working with a charity film company Film Focus Wales who are producing a film about Conscientious Objectors. They have been filming scenes using our cells and trench with some of our volunteers playing support roles. The educational film project ‘Conchies’ looking at how Conscientious Objectors were viewed then and now looking back a century later and also the dreadful effects of bloody warfare on men’s mental health. Film Focus Wales is a Voluntary Community Film and Visual Arts Production Group. Its goal is to use the power of film making to Educate, Entertain and Empower whilst creating informative film and visual arts projects. They aspire to develop working relationships with local community groups, charities, businesses and individuals on projects, which enable our and their team members to have a voice. Whether the subject matter is serious or maybe more light hearted they will get a real chance to explore the issues that are important to them. It is now the spring term and it’s all hands on deck as children work hard on their new class topics. We have been fortunate to have had Rhodri from the Ospreys to teach rugby for our KS2 children and we’ve seen the children’s passing and running skills develop well over the course of just a few weeks. Fun with rugby didn’t stop there, as Dosbarth Deri won a motivational speech competition with the WRU, and their prize was for the whole class to watch Wales against the Barbarians in the Millennium Stadium. They had a fantastic day and we’re sure that will be an experience they’ll never forget. With the help of PCSO’s Matthew and Robey, our school’s Mini Police team conducted speeding scoping exercises outside our school. They used their numeracy skills to work out the average speed. For their Castles and Dragons topic, Dosbarth Helyg had a fantastic day full of history and ideas for literacy when they visited Cardiff Castle. The class listened to stories about the children that used to live at the castle and they got to meet a real knight that taught them to how to slay a dragon. Mr Hughes Leader of Learning

Charity fashion show To promote the opening of the Sue Ryder Superstore in Bridgend last year, fashion designer David Emanuel was back in town. Our Expressive Arts Textiles group went along to meet the renowned designer and take some advice on the world of fashion. All pupils were inspired and have been designing and creating fabulous textile pieces to support their coursework submissions. Sustainability is of huge importance to the fashion industry with many companies finding creative ways to reuse and recycle materials, so the projects we have been working on at Brynteg have relevance and a sense of importance to the way in which the industry is heading. Our pupils have been creating amazing garments and sustainability has been an on-going theme throughout. Outfits have been skillfully created out of clothes donated to the Sue Ryder store. All garments are being displayed at the store at the end of the month and the charity fashion show on 31st January at 1pm in the Sue Ryder shop Bridgend will showcase the amazing skill and talent of our Textiles students whilst raising funds for charity. YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR It was great to see everybody back at school refreshed and relaxed after our Christmas break, all of us ready for the busy half term ahead of us. The children are already embracing our new themes. The foundation phase will be looking at ‘Worldwide Celebrations’ and have already learned about the Fari Lwyd and Calennig – old Welsh new year traditions, whilst key stage 2 have begun work on ‘Land, Sea and Air’, a science based theme which lends itself to chemistry, physics and biology and includes a visit to Techniquest. We’re starting preparations for the Urdd eisteddfod – the local and county rounds will be held at the Pavilion in March with the national being held in Denbeighshire this year - we’ll hopefully have good news to share as the rounds progress! French, Spanish, Menter Bro Ogwr, Urdd and all sports clubs have already re-started with a bang! We’ve played our first rugby and netball match and have another two to look forward to this month. Digital Leaders are preparing activities for Safer Internet Day & have invited PC Lloyd to school to speak on a number of key issues. The School Council meanwhile is leading on a ‘Love it Don’t Trash it’ project with BCBC and Seaquest. Our year 4 group are very excited about presenting with the Cynffig cluster. THE BRIDGE Happy New Year and welcome to the new decade, we hope everyone had a GREAT Christmas. Back to reality now unfortunately. Here at The Bridge we’re currently celebrating our Gold Rights Respecting Schools Award, being the first PRU in the country to receive this, possibly even the world!! Thanks to the students and staff for all the work and dedication that went into getting the award. We will continue to believe in our rights and yours too. In other news KS3 this term have the theme of Pits and Ponies and will be going to visit Big Pit. They will also be researching the Aberfan disaster and learning about Welsh history. Our right of the month is Article Six “You have the right to life, to grow up and reach your full potential” Everyone tries their best to relate to this using hard work and determination. Bridgend County Borough Council’s road safety team provided invaluable cycling proficiency lessons to a number of Year 6 pupils. They were taught vital skills including signalling, safe stopping and pulling out of a junction. We are very pleased to say that all the pupils who participated have passed their stage 1 and stage 2 cycle smart training. Well done all. Warburtons

Pupils in Year 3 started their “Food Glorious Food” topic with an interesting bread making session provided by Warburtons bread. Cheryl and Angela led the session with the history of the company and food hygiene rules. A big thank you to Warburtons for their continued support. Year 3 have also been enjoying an art session this week using foods and have been sorting foods using the eat well plate. NEWTON PRIMARY It has been a very exciting time in Newton Primary School for the pupils in year 5&6. We are studying a World War 2 topic entitled ‘Blitz’. To evoke the feelings of an evacuee child, we began with an exciting mystery trip to a WW2 location in Swansea. The children dressed in 1940’s clothes to make the experience even more authentic. We were also very fortunate to be able to handle many different WW2 artefacts including gas masks, a Sherman tank Periscope, medals, WW2 uniform, ARP helmets, de-activated weapons and many interesting photographs. We would like to thank all the local families who shared their family history with us. We also interacted with several WW2 enthusiasts who were welcomed as guest speakers to the school.

Pupils at Pen-y-fai Church in Wales Primary School have proven their green credentials after being awarded a top eco award for the third year running. Pen-y-fai Church in Wales Primary has been awarded the prestigious Platinum Flag 3rd Renewal Award after previously gaining three Green Flag Awards thanks to the environmental education programme, Eco-Schools. The Eco-Schools programme inspires and empowers pupils to be leaders of change in their community, helping them learn about sustainable living and global citizenship while giving them the information and support they need to make changes that will benefit their school, local environment and wider community, such as reducing waste, energy consumption, transport, biodiversity, healthy living and litter issues. As part of their Eco-Schools Platinum assessment, Pen-y-fai Primary’s Eco Warriors did a presentation to the Education officer for Keep Wales Tidy , showing all the actions that have already been completed and intended actions for the rest of the school year. Barbara Turner, the Eco-Coordinator at Pen-y-fai Primary , said: ‘’As a school we take environmental issues very seriously and do as much as we can to help save the planet for future generations.’’ Matt Bunt, Education Officer for Keep Wales Tidy said: “Pen-y-fai CIW Primary is a wonderful Platinum awarded EcoSchool. School reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

I hope that many readers were able to enjoy our 42nd school show, “Sister Act!” which played at the Grand Pavilion from 22nd - 25th January. After the enormous success of ‘Oliver!’ last year, we are absolutely delighted to report that ‘Sister Act!’ lived up to all expectations and has just finished its sell-out, 4 show run. Thank you to the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the extraordinary success of the show. Thanks to everyone who supported the show by helping children fulfil their commitments, giving up time to help and by advertising in our show programme. Without you there would be no show! CYNFFIG NEWS This term has been another busy time for pupils, staff and parents. Thank you to our business partner CGI who once again conducted our World of Work Interviews. Year 11 pupils practiced the interview process before the end of year fast approaches. Year 11 also experienced a Mock Result Day, which once again prepared pupils, this time for their GCSE results! Congratulations to those who worked so hard in their Mock exams to gain good outcomes. Our new Parents App has now been launched so that you can keep up to date on your smart phone, PC or tablet anytime anywhere. The app is a convenient way for us to share information with parents about their child’s school life. ST CLARE’S SCHOOL As I write, our Sixth Form students are setting off to Paris for a French and Business Studies trip. We are proud of our consistently excellent A-Level results that are the best in the area. Last year, 91.2% of grades were Grade C and above compared to 67% nationally whilst 40% of grades were A*/A compared to 25% nationally and 65% were A*/B compared to 51% nationally. 21% of students achieved AAB or higher in at least two facilitating subjects. Sixth Form students benefit from small tutorial style groups, a brand new Sixth Form centre and a dedicated team of experienced specialist teachers as well as six hours of tuition per subject per week. Top leaver destinations included Oxford, Exeter and Cardiff. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY The weather may have been miserable lately but we have beaten the winter blues by working together, getting out and about and having loads of fun! Foundation Phase had an excellent transport based COOL Day. COOL stands for Choosing Our Own Learning and happens at the beginning of each topic. The children all brought their bikes to school to complete various cycling challenges, conducted traffic surveys by the surgery and helped build their role play areas (the picture shows Year 2’s car wash!) During each COOL Day each class work together to plan learning experiences for the term; this ensures that the children are motivated and enthusiastic about their topics. It was brilliant to see so many new faces at our recent Nursery Open Morning but don’t worry if you missed it as Nursery admissions don’t close until March 27th! We love showing people around and understand that choosing the right school for your child is a really important decision. So here we are in a new year and a new decade and I find myself wishing for prosperous times for our town, our residents, our local businesses and of course all of our voluntary organisations. In recent weeks I have been fortunate to have had the support of many in our fund raising efforts. I would especially like to thank The Ancient Briton for hosting the Community Christmas Lunch, The Globe for the evening with Porthcawl Male Voice Choir, and The Seahorse for a lovely Quiz night. It’s great to see so many local people involved. WALES’ NEW TOURISM STRATEGY LAUNCHED AT REST BAY The all-new Watersports Centre at Rest Bay made an excellent venue for last month’s launch of Wales’ new tourism strategy. First Minister Mark Drakeford and Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism Lord Elis-Thomas, were at the EU-funded £1.5m centre to unveil ‘Welcome to Wales: Priorities For The Visitor Economy 2020-2025’, a strategy outlining Welsh Government’s vision, direction and key priorities for the future of tourism. It was an inspired choice of venue as more visitors are starting to discover what the centre can offer.

Designed to appeal to watersports enthusiasts throughout South Wales and beyond, the new two-storey centre is the result of a Bridgend County Borough Council project to provide a purposebuilt base for local groups and clubs as well as enhanced facilities such as external showers, public toilets, accessible beach wheelchairs, all-weather cycle storage, tourist information and more. With the award-winning Porthcawl Surf School, Rest Bay Bike Hire, Beach Academy and Rest Bay Café Bar all based there, the Watersports Centre is already proving to be a major attraction, which is drawing people into the county borough and the local economy. I’m sure the centre will thrive as the weather starts to improve and even more people discover what it can offer. TOP-CLASS WORK FROM OUR LOCAL SCHOOLS Inspectors from Estyn have been visiting several of our local schools with some really good outcomes. For example, after implementing previous recommendations made by Estyn, Cynffig Comprehensive has been removed from a list of schools requiring follow-up reviews. This is down to the hard work of the teachers and staff, and is great news for pupils. Elsewhere, an inspection of West Park Primary has found that the school has good standards, excellent attitudes to learning and well-being, and good teaching and learning experiences. The inspector’s report also states that the school has good learning and overall management, and excellent care, support and guidance in place. I am looking forward to seeing this for myself as part of a future visit to the school, especially as head teacher Sarah Morgan is a former pupil from my own teaching days. Sarah and her team will now work with the council and Central South Consortium to address the recommendations of the inspection. Estyn has also invited the school to prepare a case study on its work in relation to the contributions of pupil groups. This will be published on the Estyn website where it will be used as an example to help support and inspire other schools. £6M SCHEME SEEKS TO GUARD AGAINST LONG WAITING TIMES FOR SURGERY IN BRIDGEND NOT ACCEPTABLE COASTAL FLOODING New plans for the next phase of Bridgend County Borough Council’s efforts to protect Porthcawl from flooding and coastal erosion have been submitted to Welsh Government. If approved, more than £6m will be invested in the area to protect 531 homes and 174 businesses. It follows the £3m project to replace sea defences at Town Beach, which has helped to transform the seafront area and protect 260 homes, businesses and historic buildings such as the Grand Pavilion. This next phase of the coastal flooding works will focus on the refurbishment of the Western Breakwater. The Eastern promenade will be refurbished and improved, repairs will be made at Rhych Point, and a dune management system will be introduced at Sandy Bay. The work will complement the ongoing regeneration of the Salt Lake area, which is being developed as the site of a new leisure attraction, housing, food store, shops and more. If the new plans are approved, Welsh Government will provide 75 per cent of the funding with the rest being met by the council. Work will hopefully be able to start later this year and will mark the latest significant investment into the town – look out for more news very soon. Welsh hospitals and waiting times have been much in the news lately. Some research I have done has revealed that people living within BCBC are waiting far longer for orthopaedic surgery than those living elsewhere within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board area. Those needing knee replacements are having to wait two years – 24 months – while elsewhere the wait is nine months. Those needing new hips are waiting between 18 and 20 months, compared to nine, and those needing shoulder surgery are waiting 18 months instead of nine – twice as long. This is not acceptable. I know Cwm Taf only took over health provision in Bridgend last April and that it inherited these long waiting lists from the old ABMU health board but I will be pressing for a meeting to ensure that priority is given to reducing these times. Being in pain and unable to lead your life for two years is something that nobody should have to tolerate. Cwm Taf have made a start by outsourcing simple cases to private hospitals and by organising weekend work at Princess of Wales Hospital for the more complex cases but more is needed.

“Last Night at Stoneleigh…” certainly put the FUN into fundraising for the Emyr Owen branch of LATCH. Bringing 70’s & 80’s disco and cabaret to over 600 revelers at Showdome Trecco Bay on Saturday 14th December. Compered by Lenny Dee, the party started with the ‘Arrival’ duo (Kinsey/Farnham) who set the dance floor alight. Fancy Dress parade followed, 3rd place Abba (Nicola Halley & friends), 2nd place TBirds & Pink Ladies (Angela Jones & friends) and first place to Spit the Dog . Who all donated their prize money back as well. Paul Chappell’s Night at the Opera, thrilled the audience. Sandra Owen accepted a cheque on the night and funds raised stand at £5585. TRINITY CHURCH Here at Trinity we have started 2020 with a busy January. Our Messy Church team has their first session of the year on 19th and will continue to meet monthly on the 3rd Sunday of each month between 3 and 5 pm. All children are welcome with parents. They participate in activities including painting, arts & crafts, games, stories and dancing. A meal is also provided. All enjoyed their Christmas party and special thanks are due to the children and their helpers for their entertaining Nativity play, which was performed on 22nd December. A special service to discuss Marriage and Relationships was held on 19th January and we will also be continuing our Bible Study on Tuesday mornings. We will look at the first 2 chapters of Acts on 28th January at 11am. Our GAP social group is planning this year’s events and will start by attending Burn’s night at the High Tide. Meanwhile our Trinity Music Group is still looking for new members. They rehearse every Tuesday evening at 6pm. Their Christmas Musical was excellent and we look forward to hearing them again soon. On 26th December 2019, The Swan Inn, Nottage, Porthcawl kindly hosted a charity mixed pairs darts competition in memory of my husband, Andrew Mark Williams, who sadly passed away at Y Bwthyn Newydd on Friday 18th May 2018. In all £250.08 was raised through monies for entries for the competition, generous donations and a raffle on the day. PORTHCAWL TWINNERS RECEIVE COMMUNITY AWARD The long narrow trestles and tables of the most ancient and venerable councils of Kenfig formed a fitting backdrop to recent Christmas festivities for Porthcawl and St Sebastien Town Twinning Association’s Christmas meal. His worship the Mayor Cllr Graham Walter started proceedings off by thanking members for their contribution to the life of the town. He then surprised those present by awarding the Society the prestigious Porthcawl Mayor’s Community Award for twenty years of co-operation between Porthcawl and St Sebastien, which our Chair was delighted to receive on behalf of the association. Next up was our harpist playing three Scottish ballads ‘Looking at a Rainbow through a dirty Window’, The Duke of Fife’s Return to Deeside’ and everyone’s favourite ‘S’Toigh leam fhin Buntata S’Im’ otherwise known as ‘I like potatoes’. The obligatory quiz and even more obligatory Christmas Dinner followed this. Thank you to The Prince of Wales, Kenfig for hosting our wonderful event. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT The Talbot has been successful in its application for the above project and has been put forward to a customer vote in Tesco Stores during January, February and March 2020. If you shop in any of the Tesco Stores in and around Bridgend, please support us by putting your blue tokens into the plastic tanks marked ‘Talbot’ and help us win. We would like to fix new front double doors, and because the Talbot is a Grade II listed building, we are obliged to keep to the same wooden style that was originally installed back in 1911. And finally … when you read this I will have already retired and had the party to prove it! We have finally been successful in finding a Centre Manager - Amy Jones. Amy lives locally, is known by many and is a very capable young lady. I have spent nearly twelve years running the Talbot, and it has gone from strength to strength. For me it has been akin to owning a second home, paying utility bills, insurance, worrying when the freezer breaks down, or when someone ‘forgets’ to turn off a water tap, leaving lights on etc. But for all the down times, there has been many, many good times with the various day trips, showtime evenings, lunches and bingo. I have met so many people over the years, it has been such an incredible journey, and my thanks go to all the members, past and present, for helping me make the Talbot the success it is. LOCAL CHARITY DELIGHT

Over Christmas the Lions finalised several of their donations from last year including that to Prostate Wales shown in the photo with two bikers from Sunways Bikes whose parade, with our support raised, £500 for the cause. We also donated £1400 to the Rugby Club whose site and support were are essential to our biggest fundraiser the Summer Car Boot Sales. Lions also regularly support the Food Bank, KPC Youth, young carers, Sandville and other local charities as well as, through the international organisation (with over a million members world wide) disaster relief, Sight and Water Charities. The club gets much pleasure from the activities that raise these monies, but are also a group of friends who enjoy each other’s company and various social events.

Volunteers at the Bridgend Branch of Parkinson’s UK/ Cymru were delighted to be advised that they have been chosen for local sponsorship this year, 2020. Stand proud, choristers at Bridgend Male Choir. Bridgend Male Choir is celebrating its 60th Diamond Anniversary and will give a contribution from ticket sales for any concert, which is not already linked to a charity. The Choir has also agreed to perform at Parkinson’s UK/ Cymru Gala Concert in July next, thereby enabling the local branch to raise even more for a project popular with both choristers and charity volunteers. Funds raised this year from Team Parkinson’s, Bridgend are being donated to Cardiff University helping it to continue its vital stem cell research. The aim is to delay the onset of the worst of the effects of the disease and eventually to find a cure. Bridgend Male Choir has a history of supporting good causes and ten years ago the Borough Mayor recognised the Choir for helping to raise more than £ One Million for charity- a figure well exceeded by now! Club features PORTHCAWL ROTARY GIVE THANKS TO VOLUNTEERS

On Saturday 11th January at St John’s Church Hall, Newton, Porthcawl Rotary Club held a post-Christmas event to thank all the members and volunteers who gave up their time over the festive period to raise a record amount for Rotary charities. Invited guests included members of the Inner Wheel Club, Porthcawl Town Mayor Cllr. Graham Walter and volunteers. Many Rotarians also came along to make this an event to remember. We were treated to hot drinks, mulled wine, delicious rock cakes and mince pies. Our thanks to Rotarians Jean, Carol and Andrew’s wife Liz for organising the catering. President Hugh Moatt gave thanks to the members and especially to the volunteers who helped Rotary during the festive season. Inner Wheel President Judy Moatt gave a most generous and hearty thanks to the Rotarians of Porthcawl. Rotarian Clive Edwards also gave a special mention to Collin Cunningham for his continued support in collecting huge amounts of bottle tops, which over the past year raised substantial funds towards the “End Polio” Fund. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL In 2019 we handled a total of 85 logged incidents, an increase of 39% on the previous year. We recorded 169 monitored incidents for 2019, again up by 28% on the previous year and logged a total of 9772 vessel movements, which was a 24% increase on the previous year. These statistics made us the busiest NCI station in the UK for the number of incidents handled - quite an achievement for a small station such as ours, but testament to the vigilance of our dedicated crew! We had some excellent news to end the year and must congratulate Ian Cole, one of our watchkeepers, who was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List, for services to Defence and the local community, reflecting his MOD service, as well as many years as Station Officer with Porthcawl Coastguard and more recently with Porthcawl NCI. In May 2020, we will be hosting a fund-raising choral event at Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion featuring Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir and the Parc and Dare brass band. We are seeking sponsorship to cover outlay for this major event and any potential sponsors are encouraged to contact us. Your support would be much appreciated. Every year Porthcawl Town Council (PTC) hosts the Jenkin Henry Tea for 20 residents who were born in Porthcawl. The recipients from a short list aged between 65 and 95 were invited to the Grand Pavilion and were served a cream tea after being entertained by Alan Townsend and Jack Bridger members of the Porthcawl ukulele band Each was presented with a certificate and gift bag by Mayor Cllr Graham Walter, Cllr A Harris and Deputy town Clerk Sarah Watkins. Jenkin Henry was born in the town in 1833, before emigrating at an early age to Australia where he became a successful adjuster and owner of weighbridges. he never forgot his hometown and on his death in 1919 he made a bequest of £200 to the then Porthcawl UDC. with instructions that the interest was distributed at Christmas. PDC continued with the instructions of the bequest ever since providing the tea each year. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I have been served with Divorce proceedings by my husband and don’t know what to do next. He has stated many different reasons as to why I am to blame for the Divorce and there is mention of my having to pay for his costs? Do I need to see a solicitor? Surely, I don’t have to pay for his costs? Answer:Your husband is the Petitioner in the Divorce and has filed on the basis of your behaviour which he claims has been unreasonable. As this is classed as a “fault” fact, he is able to ask the Court to order that you pay his Divorce costs. If he has a solicitor, their legal charges may easily be in the region £500 or more and he will also have paid a Court fee of £550 on issuing. Your husband therefore, could be claiming from you a minimum of £1050 if he has had legal advice. I strongly recommend that you see your own solicitor within 7 days of receipt of the Divorce proceedings as the form you have to complete known as the Acknowledgment of Service must be filed forthwith. Your solicitor will attempt to negotiate with your husband’s solicitors on the question of the divorce costs and is likely to propose to your husband’s solicitors that you will not defend or delay the Divorce on the condition that an agreement can be reached on that issue. A compromise may be reached, for example, it could be agreed that you each share the cost of the Petition Court fee of £550 which your husband will have paid when the Divorce Petition was issued. THE DIVORCE PROCESS Whether you are using a solicitor or trying to manage the divorce process yourself, it helps to know what’s involved in the process. When a couple divorce, three different issues may need to be resolved: • the divorce itself - ie bringing the marriage to an end; • agreeing a financial settlement; • sorting out childcare arrangements, including where children will live and any child maintenance payments These three different aspects of divorce do not necessarily have to be dealt with at the same time. All Court proceedings relating to divorce, including financial or childcare issues, are dealt with by the Family Court. The Family Court has several regional divorce centres around the country. Divorce centres can deal with routine aspects of divorce - for example, the divorce process itself when this is not contested. Contested applications and cases where a hearing is required can be dealt with at more local Family Courts. If you are getting divorced, one of the first things you will need to decide is whether you need a divorce Solicitor. Whilst you can reduce the costs, time and confrontation by agreeing as much as possible between yourselves, it would always be beneficial to seek legal advice before you enter in to those discussions to ascertain what your rights are, inevitably you will take that information away with you to try to reach an agreement between yourselves. In terms of the Divorce itself, the Court has to be involved. Starting with the divorce petition, the process involves several stages of divorce paperwork to bring the marriage to an end. Provided that you have agreed the details between yourselves, the divorce process fairly straightforward and should take about 3-6 Months depending on the Courts processing times. You do not normally need to go to the Court in person. If you can agree a financial settlement between yourselves, you can ask the Family Court to approve a Consent order - making what you have agreed legally binding and final. This is usually a better approach than arguing it out in Court and asking the Judge to decide. The Family Court itself encourages divorcing couples to try to resolve things between themselves. Before you can ask the court to decide, you normally have to attend a mediation information session to see whether mediation could help you reach agreement. CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS FOR OPPOSITE SEX COUPLES

Opposite sex couples can now enter into a civil partnership which will give them many of the rights and financial benefits of married couples. It is a common misconception that cohabiting couples are protected by “common law marriage”, but such a union does not exist. A couple must either marry or enter into a civil partnership in order to inherit the other’s estate automatically when one dies and be exempt from paying inheritance tax. Those who are not married or in a civil partnership must protect their partner by making a will or transferring their property into joint names. If you and your partner have a child together and you marry or form a civil partnership you should re-register your child so that they are on record as a “child of marriage”. Upon a marriage to their child’s mother, a father will obtain parental responsibility for that child. This does not happen upon a civil partnership, so then a father would have to enter into an agreement with the child’s mother or obtain an order from the court. Civil partners will be entitled to the Marriage Allowance, which means that you can transfer up to £1250.00 of your personal allowance to your partner if you are a non-taxpayer and your partner is a basic tax payer. Civil partners can also transfer assets between each other without attracting Capital Gains Tax. As a civil partner you may be able to claim part of your partner’s state pension based upon your partner’s NI contributions. Workplace pension schemes are obliged to offer the same benefits to civil partners as to married couples. Death benefits and life insurance payouts may be automatically passed on to a civil partner whereas cohabiting couples will have to nominate the other to receive such benefits. Women’s institutions SKER WI- NEW YEAR PARTY

The General Election in December 2019, resulted in the postponement of Sker WI’s annual Christmas party. However, this meant that the programme for 2020 could open with a New Years Party instead. Members enjoyed a fish and chip supper followed by musical entertainment by Ric. As usual, Ric soon had members singing along and dancing to his toe-tapping selection of musical favourites. Everyone attending agreed that this was a very welcome and enjoyable way to start the new year. Sker WI meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7pm. COYCHURCH WI President Kath Mepham welcomed everyone with best wishes for 2020 to the afternoon meeting. A warm welcome was extended to new member Diane Llewellyn and guest Jill Davies. Following the business of the meeting members enjoyed social time over a fish/chicken lunch with delicious homemade desserts of trifle and fruit tart with tea/coffee. We have a varied and interesting programme of events organised for 2020: on February 4th a talk with “First Aid Hands On” plus pancake tossing with a prize of £10 for the winner. On March 3rd we host a group event this includes members from Colwinston, Lysworney, Merthyrmawr and Southerndown with entertainment from International Welsh Dancers along with a supper of lamb cawl, Welsh cakes and barabrith. Tickets now available £5pp. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Williams Memorial Hall, Coychurch excluding August when we have our annual summer trip this year visiting Highclere Castle. PORTHCAWL WI The November meeting was enjoyed by our members when Ceri Joseph a local historian gave us fascinating insight into the story of “The Titanic” with Ceri providing an accompanying photo show. It proved to be a wonderful talk followed by tea and biscuits. Our annual dinner was held on the 21st of November at “The Atlantic” and the luncheon was enjoyed by our ladies. A small group of our book club enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea at the Broomwagon on the 3rd of December. These ladies meet monthly to discuss the allocated book that they have read and look forward to the tea and cakes. Our xmas social went with a swing when ‘Catwg’ bell ringers joined us. They gave enjoyable music and also lots of laughter when some of our brave members were persuaded to ‘give it a go’. It was soon obvious that a lot more practice was required by our volunteers. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Many members enjoyed a carol concert at Baglan Church organised by Swansea Federation at which our chairman Freda Rodger sang a solo. Following our Christmas Fayre a cheque for £500 was presented to Porthcawl National Coastwatch Institution, which was much appreciated. Since my last report we have had two very good speakers. At our Christmas meeting John Sheen had us aching with laughter at his interpretation of the Twelve Days of Christmas and at our last meeting Kate Lowery gave us a most interesting talk on “Emmaus”. Not just another charity shop but a concept providing homes for the homeless, which actually began in France after the 2nd world war by a priest Abbé Pierre. Emmaus UK was formed in 1997 with Terry Waite as its President. They have a holistic approach and the people they home are called ‘Companions’ and stay about 9months before they are able to be independent. Our meeting this month is on February 12th 2.00p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Gail Ivins will tell us about ‘Sea Glass Trinkets and Treasures’. Intriguing title so do come and hear her. NEWTON WI The first meeting of the year took place on Jan 8th. where all were warmly welcomed and a toast given for a happy and healthy New Year. The speakers for the evening were: Tai Chi Experts, Gilda and Hayden. They explained how Tai Chi (which originated in China) is well known for its Physical and Mental health benefits. Gilda and Hayden then gave us a fascinating demonstration after which most members were delighted to participate. The winner of the Edna Jones Competition Cup this year Pam Burton, which was presented by Helen Deakes. Happy Birthday goes to Gladys Medford who celebrated her 90th Birthday with a lovely cake, shared by all the members present. January meeting is the Annual Resolutions Selection Night. There were five to chose from this year. The winner chosen will be announced later in the year. The Christmas Party on December 18th 2019 was a resounding success. All our members enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner, which was expertly prepared by our President Jennifer. To thank her for all her hard work, a lovely bouquet of flowers was presented by Glenys. LALESTON WI Our first meeting of 2020 was on 2nd January. Various items of interest were brought to member’s attention from The County Letter. Members were told that the seat that our W.I. had requested from Laleston Community Council had been installed at the bus stop by The Great House many thanks to our local community council. We played several games of Hoy Bingo, which was good fun and small prizes given to winning members. Names and deposits were taken of members wishing to go on our Annual Lunch on 18th February at St. Mary Hill Golf Club. The raffle was won by Dawn Storie and the competition by Val Lock. Our next meeting is on 6th February and the speaker is from Shout Crisis Charity. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI The weather terrible but we don’t mind it was the first meeting of Mynydd Cynffig WI s in 2020 and we were determined to enjoy ourselves bad weather or not. WI business was discussed including many of the trips and outings on offer. Our lunch club is going from strength to strength we are even discussing afternoon tea when the weather gets better. Our speakers for the coming year will give us a chance to enjoy something new and in some cases participate in things we haven’t tried before. The WI gives us all something different for each and every one of us, company, a chance to see friends, enjoy new experiences with our speakers every month, trips and outings. We meet each month in the Talbot Center second Tuesday of the month 2 pm to 4-4.30 pm you’ll be very welcome to call in we’ve always got tea and biscuits at the ready Christine Callaghan

INNER WHEEL OF PORTHCAWL Porthcawl Inner Wheel have had a very busy time over Christmas. We had our Christmas evening meal in the Grove and were wonderfully entertained by the Hand Bell Ringers, during which we were able to donate over £500 to the Stroke Club, the proceeds of our Coffee morning in Trinity. Two of our members were brave enough to do the Christmas morning swim and between them raised £250 for local charities. It was Paget’s Awareness day on the 11th January, a condition our President suffers from, so we had another coffee morning, this time in a member’s home and raised £140 for research into the bone disease. We are now looking forward to our trip to the theatre to see The King and I and whatever 2020 brings. If you would like to know more about us, we meet at the Grove every first Tuesday at 7pm. Business & finance APRIL SURGE ON MORTGAGE DEALS ENDING

TIME TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR MONEY Please understand this is nothing to do with Money Laundering! Every so often you need to look at your investments and check if you’re getting the best deal for your money. Be it a Cash ISA, Stocks and Shares ISA or any form of investment, are you getting value for money? It isn’t always necessary to change providers to gain the best returns and it’s often easier to take advice on what you have before moving your money when you don’t have to. Currently one of the worst performing UK Equity Income Funds is Invesco previously Invesco Perpetual the darling of Neil Woodford, it’s made nothing over three years whilst several others I could name have made over 20% over the same period. Moving a Stocks and Shares can be expensive if you haven’t checked the charges. You might get out without an exit penalty but some company’s like St James’s Place for example will charge up to 5% fees on the purchase of new funds. You could suffer similar charges by going direct to some well-known Investment Houses. The best way around these charges is to see an Independent Financial Advisor as they should be able to provide investment funds at no cost via a platform and you can negotiate with them their advisor fees for arranging this work, which should be significantly cheaper. At the same time you should be able to check your risk profile to ensure you are investing in the right places. The same is the case if you need your pension funds/plans reviewed to make sure they’re on target to do what you’re expecting. You can compare what your funds are doing with the help of an IFA and then take advice on making changes if necessary. The latest survey from the trade bodies and mortgage lenders suggest that there is about to be a surge in the number of mortgage deals ending in April 2020, just two months away. For those of you whose current rate is about to end, NOW is the time to act if you want to secure a fresh rate – delaying could mean you missing the deadline to get a new deal in place on time. That would mean your monthly repayments increasing, when there is every chance of you preventing this by acting without delay. Many borrowers will be coming off deals of as much as around the 3.5% to 4% mark, when deals are now being granted at as little as around the 1.25% mark, depending on the lender and the amount of borrowing against your property’s current value. This goes for Landlords too, where Buy-to-Let rates are almost as low, saving a decent amount on payments each month going forward with a new deal. Our whole-of-market research facility allows us to take a good look at what is likely to be the best new deal for you. There is no cost at all for us to get the quotes on your behalf, all you need do is find the time to pick up the phone and we’ll take a few details. We’ll then come back to you with some ideas of what’s on offer. Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

This month, aside from the interesting talks and regular events, two other exciting things are happening. Our event organising ladies are in the process of producing another wonderful Chinese themed meal to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The last one was superb with delicious food and colourful themed decorations. It is a ticketed event for club members and as most of them have been sold there are only a few places left! The other cause for excitement is that the club shop reopens this month and there are a number of new products to whet the gardening appetite! In our gardens the last chance to prune overgrown trees and shrubs is rapidly approaching. There are two things to check before you tackle the job – first is it the right time of year to prune the subject in question (some trees, for example, ‘bleed’ if pruned in the spring)? Secondly – please check that birds haven’t already begun to build nests! Later in the month it will be time to start off seed sowing so now is the time to give everything a good clean and disinfect. PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY This is the group for you if you like flowers and are interested in making your own arrangements. You can learn the basics of flower arranging, perfect your technique or just watch our regular demonstrations. We hold a raffle every session and the lucky winners can take home the flower arrangements. Every month we also hold a practice session and our club tutor assists us in making our own creations. It is great fun, sociable and we learn a useful skill! Our first night back this year is 22nd January and we will be holding Practice nights on 19th February and 18th March. We have a demonstration by Sharon Dower on 4th March and by Linda Seabrook on 8th April. All sessions will take place on Wednesdays at Awel Y Mor Centre at 7.30 pm. We also hold regular social events and club outings. We are holding an Afternoon Tea with an Art Demonstration by Sue McDonagh at the Grove on 5th February. PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Another gardening year is upon us and we must get started, although for many it never stops. Seed potatoes, onion sets and shallots are now in our Store. We also have a good range of King’s seeds for those who did not take advantage of the NSALG discount scheme, King’s full range at about half retail price. Seed potatoes must be laid out to ‘chit’ so that the potatoes develop short and sturdy shoots ready for planting out. Egg boxes or trays are ideal for this keeping the potatoes apart. Rub out all but three or four shoots. Place them in a well lit spot, cool but frost-free. Onion sets and shallots again should be laid out in a light, airy, frost-free spot. For an early start root in modules until the ground is warm enough for planting out. Take a chance with early sowings of onions, parsnips even tomatoes. Forcing rhubarb for an early crop of tender, pink shoots can be done easily by covering established plants with a bucket or clay pot excluding all light. This wet, mild winter has still some time to go yet so beware of frosts yet to come. Frank Fulgoni 48 | seaside news

February feels like a turning point in the garden, it’s still cold outside but there are signs of spring’s arrival (soon honest!) Bulbs are slowly emerging from the ground and the days are getting longer at last! In Welsh February is called ‘Y mis Bach’ which translates into ‘little month’ as it is the shortest month of the year, so March can’t be too far away. Trim back heathers as flowers fade to prevent them from getting leggy, also start chitting early potatoes, egg boxes are brilliant for this, saves them rolling all over the place (well mine do!) Shallots can be planted this month, harvesting in June they make lovely pickled onions, but have you tried them crispy fried, delicious! Prune roses this month, although the 14th in Valentine’s Day, the rose is not February’s national flower, rather the humble violet (lovely in salads) St Valentine’s Day was originally a Roman fertility rite, where women were paired off with men by lottery! What happened to St Valentine? He was beaten with clubs and then beheaded, very loving indeed. The lovely rose became involved because it was Venus’s favourite flower (wouldn’t have been the same with a violet!) Chris Early

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER Our Step Up For January Challenge Was Exactly That A Challenge. At the time of writing this we are only half way through and sometimes I love to do it and other times I don’t like doing it. But one things for sure it’s an excellent way of getting me up off the sofa as I really don’t want to let anyone down who have sponsored me. I’m sure others who are doing the walk feel exactly the same as me on all fronts. We are in the swing now for organising our annual charity ball which this year will be held on the 25 April at The Bear Hotel in Cowbridge. Tickets will go on sale shortly. We are also looking for someone who can join our team as a Head Volunteer. This person will help us to co-ordinate the events as well as look for volunteers who are really crucial to making events successful. This position will be an unpaid position and will be needed for a few hours each month to help us be ahead of time. If you think you fit the bill or you know someone who can fit the bill. Arts & music £70K INVESTMENT IN NEW LED LIGHTING FOR THE GRAND PAVILION

The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl, managed by Awen Cultural Trust on behalf of Bridgend Council, has received new LED lighting with the help of funding from the Arts Council Wales and Porthcawl Town Council. This investment has allowed the iconic Grand Pavilion to replace the existing theatrical lighting rig in its auditorium, which had been in place for over 25 years, with a new, modern energy efficient LED theatrical lighting system. There is a positive environmental impact and benefit with the new LED lights, which will see an approximate 90% reduction in electrical consumption in its first year. The new LEDs have a lamp life of 250 times that of the old tungsten lamps, which will vastly reduce the need for replacement lamps each year. The LEDs can also mix their own colour at source, so this removes the need for coloured theatrical gel, making a saving on gel sheets from 120 to 0 per year. This new lighting system will be ensuring far less energy is wasted from the heat generated by the previous lighting system. The reduced heat levels in the auditorium will also make it a more comfortable environment for both performers and audience members. Hannah Kester, Head of Cultural Development of Awen Cultural Trust, said: “The new lighting equipment will allow us to maximise the capabilities of our stage lighting system as well as significantly lowering our carbon footprint. As lighting is a key part of all theatrical productions, we will be able to offer all of the artists who work with us the most modern lighting for their productions. As well as professional companies and artists, community organisations such as Bridgend Youth Theatre, Porthcawl Amateur Operatics and Dramatic Society and local charities will have a state-of-the-art lighting system for their shows and events, allowing them to use a wider range of lighting states/colours.” Awen Cultural Trust a registered charity – Making People’s Lives Better.

Sounds a great night! Kenfig-based keyboard wizard Dan Clarke Burton’s young career is really taking off. After supporting 80s idol Howard Jones, Dan was offered the chance to join his band. Since then he’s completed a British and European tour, which climaxed with a huge New Year’s Eve concert to over 500,000 people at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate in Germany. Howard had six top ten singles in the 80s, including “What is Love” and number one album “Human Lib”. Check out some of Dan’s work on his Facebook and YouTube sites. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW In mid January the Taliesin Arts Centre in Swansea University screened the 2019 film “Bait”, set in a Cornish fishing village, and I went along to see it with my film producer colleague Carl Richards. What set it apart from anything I have seen before is that this 89-minute feature-length production was shot in 16mm black and white using a clockwork-driven Bolex cine camera. Its director, Mark Jenkin, was also responsible for the photography, and he hand-developed all the film himself. This is a genuinely remarkable film, and I recommend it to everyone who claims to be a lover of the cinema – because this was real cinema in its purest and most raw sense. The film images have genuine grain and lots of sparkle, those little – and sometimes not so little – white specks that show up on the film where particles of dust have embedded themselves into the negative. And the dialogue was entirely post-synced, not that you would know it. If you like your films clinically perfect, then this isn’t for you – but if you want to savour a masterpiece, search for it until you find it. WARMTH AND JOY AT CHRISTMAS! Despite the ferocious wind and rain, Côr Bro Ogwr brought festive warmth and joy to the audience at All Saint’s Church, Porthcawl on 14th December. The centerpieces of the programme were Saint-Saens’ Christmas Oratorio and Vaughn Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols. These pieces were interspersed by seasonal favourites including O Holy Night, Berlioz’ The Shepherd’s Farewell, as well as modern carols Ecce Novum by Finish composer Ola Gjielo, and Bob Chilcott’s The Shepherds Sing. Four talented soloists joined the choir: Kate Reynolds (soprano); Olivia Gomez (mezzo-soprano); Jack Parry (tenor); and William Stevens (baritone). The Palenna String Quartet, harpist Angharad Edwards, and the choir’s resident accompanist, Glen Crooks, accompanied the choir. This was the first concert for Côr Bro Ogwr’s new musical director, Ben Pinnow, and it was truly a great start to his tenure. Ben not only conducted the programme with skill and energy, but also demonstrated a strong rapport with the audience and choristers alike. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our 2020 Malcolm Nugent Portfolio Competition. Each member could enter a set of four prints or digital images into the competition, one from each of the following genres: Abstract or Still Life, Landscape, Nature and People with 18 members entering. Mike Clatworthy from Swansea skillfully judged the competition, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each of the 72 entries. Congratulations to Heather Roper who was the overall winner with 4 excellent images. We were honoured to have Malcolm Nugent in attendance to present his trophy to Heather. PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR 2019 ended really well with our normal festive concerts plus carol services at the St. David’s Hotel, and Porthcawl’s new medical centre. The Arlington Road Christmas Carol Service was an amazing success with standing room only. Not only was the audience treated to a rousing evening of carols but also a performance by 9-yearold Emilie de Burgh had the audience in stitches. Her wonderful monologue ‘Birthday Hijack’, on having her Birthday on Christmas day, was the highlight of a wonderful evening; a star in the making. The ladies section surpassed themselves with excellent refreshments. Thanks to you all. The choir also had the pleasure of singing at a wedding in Thornbury Castle, a wonderful venue on the edge of the Cotswolds. The evening was truly magical and the enthusiastic guests were provided with a mixture of Christmas Carols, traditional male voice pieces and anecdotes from our evening’s musical director Alex. 2020 has started well with number of interesting bookings are in the calendar. The choir is looking forward to singing at venues such as Cardiff City Hall and Castle. In February, we are celebrating the 40th anniversary and a Dinner at the High Tide is under planning. Sport reports PORTHCAWL RUNNERS

The New Year sees no rest for the runners of Porthcawl. There were many individual achievements over Christmas and the New Year including ParkRun awards and milestones, Fun Runs, The Festive 4 and the West Glam series. There was also the well-supported end of year party for the Bridgend Running clubs, which featured some seriously talented musicians and brought the year to a fitting close. However, the main focus going forward should be the development of the club as a whole and the runners that give up their time to achieve this continued growth. Without the dedication from these selfless individuals, the club would not be experiencing the success it is currently enjoying. So from the graduates of the 2019 C25K groups, the chatty social members, the Sunday morning long runners all the way up to the half and full marathon racers (and all the athletes and triathletes in between), thanks very much to all the coaches, helpers and administrators who tirelessly contribute every week to allow the members to thrive in such an inclusive and welcoming environment. We are looking forward to more challenges in 2020 including a new intake of C25K starters in March, Porthcawl 10K in July and Parkrun on the seafront every Saturday. If any of this appeals and you want to be part of the continued growth of the club, please don’t hesitate to come along to any of the sessions which accommodate all levels from those taking their first steps to seasoned athletes. SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT Over the Christmas period as well at the time of writing on the 14th of January we have had consistent surf with mostly off shore breezes as well. I am suffering from neck and shoulder strain since October so I have been taking it easy. I have to mention again regards the dredging in our Channel. The Sand at Hardees Bay is now about 15ft lower than it was when I started surfing aged 20 ish, some 35 years ago. This sand is not coming back! It has never recycled since I’ve started surfing. Indeed, the sand at Hardees Bay used to be half way up the shingle bank, but now there are a lot of Rocks exposed at the bottom of the shingle bank making entering and leaving the water at Hardees a Dangerous Task. I ask our local councils. Isn’t it time you stopped lying about naturally recycling of our sand on our beaches when guess what, you might not go to the beaches but people like me and others do so every day. And we can see the sand is going 60 | seaside news

permanently and the authorities lie about it. Southerndown and Ogmore by Sea is attracting a lot of tourists these days as well as Porthcawl and the local businesses depend on sandy beaches. No one will come here if our beaches are reduced to Rock Bed. The corrosion is very evident at Southerndown and Sker beach as well. Time to stop sand dredging! David A. Batten

Why healthy sand dunes are important Over the last 80 years, nearly 90% of the open sand has disappeared being replaced by dense grass and scrub. The dunes have become stable and fixed, and rare wildlife has disappeared. Sand dunes are wild, iconic landscapes. They are biodiversity hotspots where carpets of orchids still survive alongside songbirds, butterflies, and a wide array of endangered insects. Healthy dunes have plenty of bare sand and are constantly in motion. Sand hills are built, blow out and are built again. Unique and specialised communities of plants and invertebrates are constantly re-colonising the open space. As well as being reservoirs of biodiversity, our sand dunes help safeguard our wider environment by providing a natural solution to flood defence and coastal erosion as well as maintaining water flows and supporting vital pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. Action we’re taking: · Re-profiling dunes and creating bare sand to allow sand to move again. · Lowering the surface of dried-out dune slacks (hollows) to re-create pools and wet habitat. · Remove scrub and invasive non-native species, which are smothering and stabilising the dunes.

CONEY BEACH WHEELCHAIR FUND

Our final fundraising event of the year was a Santa motorbike ride organised by Steve Flett. Not only was it festive fun, but also it raised £133. This completed a run of fundraising events including the Elvis Weekend, Clothes swap, Raffle, Yoga on the beach & go fund me page. We also received a community grant from Greggs and a donation in lieu of Christmas cards from the

staff at Brain Injury Wales. This was added to previous donations from Paintworx, Ancient Briton, Newton Music Festival, Jolly Sailor & the Christmas morning swim committee. This overwhelming response to our appeal has enabled us to purchase 2 Wheelchairs & one was used on the morning of the Christmas Morning Swim. We would like to thank everyone for their support. These wheelchairs will make a huge difference in allowing access to the beach. The wheelchairs are available by contacting Coney Surf who are located on Mackworth Road.
