EMYR’S KARAVAN4THEKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE

Email: info@seasidenews.co.uk We want to reach the £40,000 target

Dear Editor, GET £40,000 TAR Fantastic news, we have now raised over £35,000 - thank you so, so, so much to you kind people who have raised or donated recently - great effort and very generous! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. Velindre and Latch have started purchasing equipment for the children at the hospital; such as an interactive board/42” TV, iPad, laptop, magic carpet projector, mood lighting pod, teenager cubicle - so please keep fund raising and donating - the more we raise, the more they will have whilst they are having treatment. For more information please visit our website: http://www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ or call 07900493697 We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin and Huw Owen, Paul Downes and Christian Evans

Your views MYSTERY OF THE MOVING PEGS, CONTINUED…

Dear Editor, Vaughn at Park Slip kindly lent me a camera, such as you see on wildlife programmes, they are triggered by movement. That night I set it up in my shed, the mug, half full of seed in direct line with the camera. The next morning I rushed out to see what had been captured…NOTHING. There sat the mug, half full of pegs but nothing I could find on the camera! This continued for several nights even after step-by-step instructions over the phone from Park Slip. By the end of the week I was so frustrated and with the battery running low, I decided to return the camera to Park Slip for their expert inspection. Eureka, there they were, no hefty squirrel but two little wood mice! While the film was not of a good quality, one could clearly see them sitting on the edge of the mug, popping inside and returning to the lip to eat the seed. Later with a peg between its paws, one little mouse proceeded to push it down into the mug, this could be clearly seen, I and the staff at Park Slip were amazed, they had never seen the like. We suddenly thought how hard these two little mice had been working every night, how exhausted and frustrated they must be. That night I left a small jar cap of seed out for them, none in the mug. Next morning all the seed was eaten, no errant pegs, all were resting quietly in their bag. As I was leaving for Christmas in Vancouver, I left a full container of seed to see them through my absence. I returned to an empty peg bag and the enclosed picture! The mystery of the pegs solved, my two little mice will rest secure in my shed. Their prowess will be reported in the nature reserve magazine! If only they knew how clever and famous they were. Julie Smith Nottage, Porthcawl

A SEASIDE STORY, THE NAUGHTY COUSINS Dear Editor, I’m emailing on behalf of our mum Sue Waters. She was wondering if you wanted a children’s story. Her grandchildren always ask her to tell them a story out of her head, not out of a book, here’s one to share with other children. Daddy and Nanny said to tell the children “We are going down to the harbour on your scooters to have an ice-cream”. “Yeah” they all shouted. When they got to the Harbour there was a long queue for the ice cream parlour. Daddy and Nanny went to wait in the queue and told the children to “Play on their scooters, but not to go anywhere else!” After a while they got bored, so they left their scooters by a bench and went to look in the harbour. They were pointing at all the different boats, there was one that caught their eye. It was a tiny little blue boat and it was called Sally. The children looked over at the queue, which was now longer than before, they waved at Daddy and Nanny who both waved back. “They will be ages and we are bored” said the boys. “Look there’s a ladder going down to the little blue boat. We could pretend to be sailors, yeah!” They climbed down the ladder and clambered into the boat. Great fun! Just as they were going to get back up the ladder for their ice creams a wave came into the harbour and started to bob the boat about, they had to hold on tight. “I don’t like it”, said Arlo, “I feel sick” said Ethan and little Logan started to cry. Orea, the oldest and the only girl said “Don’t panic, keep calm, I think the tides going out and it’s taking us out of the harbour.” Disaster – before they knew it they were out in the ocean, not tied up safe in the harbour walls! Daddy and Nanny came back with the ice-cream to find the scooters by the bench but no children! They called and called them, the ice-creams were melting fast and dripping over their hands and over Nannys new dress. “They can’t be far, their scooters are here” said Daddy. It was starting to get dark now and in the boat the children were lying down huddled together, very frightened. Ethan kept saying “He felt sick”. Orea knew that every boat should have a flare to send up in an emergency, she was a lifeguard, so she started to look for one and sent one to alert and one to confirm. Immediately the lifeboat station launched the lifeboat. In no time the lifeboats bright light found the little blue boat. They lifted the children into the warm lifeboat, wrapped them in blankets and gave them warm drinks. It sped off very quickly, everyone holding on very tight. It was fantastic, what an adventure! Each one was given a turn at the controls. When they got back to the harbour everyone cheered they were safe, very cold and very, very sorry for all the trouble they had caused! But what an adventure they’d had. By the way this is not a true story! Thank God! Submitted by Nanny, Sue Waters Porthcawl

01656 754845 porthcawl.library@ awen-wales.com

BOOK OF THE MONTH The Last Hours by Minette Walters Award winning author, Minette Walters has brought her impressive skill as a writer of psychological crime to create a dark and gripping depiction of Medieval England in the jaws of the Black Death. June, 1348: the Black Death enters England however in the estate of Develish, Lady Anne takes control of her people’s future - including the lives of two hundred bonded serfs and chooses a bastard slave, Thaddeus Thurkell, to act as her steward. Lady Anne and Thurkell decide to quarantine Develish by bringing the serfs inside the walls. With this sudden overturning of the accepted social order and ignorant of what is happening in the world outside, they wrestle with themselves, with God and with the terrible uncertainty of their futures. If you loved Pillars of Fire by Kenneth Follett you will enjoy this. 14 | seaside news

over 21 years, were granted the vote that same day. Suffrage had been granted according to property status, which left many men who fought and died in WW1, still not having the right to vote. Porthcawl boys under the age of 21 years or who lived at home, prior to enlisting, would have come into that category. It was the General election 14th December 1918, in which Porthcawl women first cast their vote. It was not until 2nd July 1928 that all British women, of 21 years, would be granted universal suffrage. In 1918, Porthcawlians voted in the Aberavon Constituency, continuing to do so until 1949. After many years of ‘Deeds Not Words’ and helping to win a war, women of 30 years, who owned property, were finally granted the right to vote on 6th February 1918. Naturally, it would have been assumed that, before the war, it was the meetings, demonstrations and sacrifices by women that influenced the passing of the Act. In 1913 Porthcawl Women’s Suffragist meetings were held at the National School, Lias Road, (Co-op today) and postboxes were targeted with ink. School reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL, PORTHCAWL

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

January is always a busy time in school, and this year has been no exception, particularly with so many new pupils joining midyear. Boys and girls in the Senior School have been working hard towards their external GCSE and A-level examinations. We wish all our pupils the best with their results, and would like to congratulate them on the effort they have already put in this year. Our Sixth Formers are already starting to receive their university offers. Last year we were delighted that every student went to their first choice university, many within the Russell Group. Our football, rugby and netball teams have been training at lunch time and after school and have already had some great results this term. We’re also very proud of our Junior X-Country squad who are benefitting from the additional training/ coaching at X-Country club at lunchtimes. If you missed our Open Morning on 28th February, why not book a private tour instead? Contact our Registrar, Holly Fowlkes, on (01656) 789966 or visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk now. Simon Antwis, Headmaster Picture caption: St Clare’s Junior X-Country squad

Congratulations to Laurence Hunt, (Year 13), who has been offered a place to study Medicine at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Competition was extremely stringent and Laurence has done incredibly well to gain a place for such a competitive course. Recently, his sister Alex (studying Veterinary Science at Pembroke College) and Lydia Pickett (studying Medicine at St Catharine’s College), returned to talk to sixth formers about life at Cambridge University, and making the leap from PCS to a top university. Thank you for finding the time to come back and see us, and for sharing your experiences with our pupils. We are all on a high after the tremendous success of our 40th school show, “The Phantom of the Opera”, which has just finished its sell-out, 5 show run at the Grand Pavilion. On Friday, we celebrated by inviting back past staff to share precious memories of the show, and it was wonderful to see so many old faces there. Thank you to the cast, staff and parents who give so much to ensure the extraordinary success of the show – long may the tradition of professionalism and excellence continue at PCS! Any potential Year 12 pupils for September, who missed our recent Open Evening, please contact school to arrange a visit. For all our latest news, please visit our website, www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL Our School Council is comprised of representatives from each of our classes. Their role is to be the ‘pupil voice’ to speak on behalf of fellow pupils to make suggestions for activities, such as fundraising initiatives, improvements within the school and to highlight any other concerns that may arise. Road safety within the community is a vital issue, not just for our school but for all schools in the area and our School Council were keen to be proactive in seeking improvements. Consequently, we joined together with Afon y Felin and Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sger School Councillors for a meeting with Bridgend Council Leader Huw David and Councillors Charles Smith and Jeff Tildsley. This was a constructive meeting and a superb forum for our aspiring politicians. The Councillors were keen to listen to the pupils who eloquently expressed their concerns over the lack of speed restrictions, crossings, signage etc. and to their suggested solutions. The pupils also listened and while they accept that budget restraints will limit what can be achieved, they are hopeful for some improvements in safety as a result of this discussion and await a response. school reports CYNFFIG COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL It’s been another busy month at Cynffig. 27 pupils have been trained in Peer2Peer mentoring by ‘Bullies Out’. This effective mentoring programme creates opportunities for pupils to develop their listening and communication skills whilst supporting peers who need someone who will listen. Year 11 pupils Ben Evans and Lowri Thomas and Emily Walters Year 10 have been selected for the Under 16’s Welsh Basketball Squad. Congratulations to all three who are currently training with the Welsh Squad at Cardiff Metropolitan University. Thursday March 1st is our Sixth Form Open Evening 5-7pm. We look forward to welcoming prospective parents and pupils and showing them how we achieve a 100% A* - E grades for our learners. Come and find out the courses available at Cynffig and our partner schools. Visit departments, meet teachers and experience how small equals successful! Our Creative Lead Project benches have finally arrived. Designed and created by pupils in years 7 and 9 and Angharad Pearce Jones they were inspired by the listed architecture of Cynffig’s buildings. Using numeracy skills to create geometric shapes the benches design clearly reflect our pupils progress in the 5 Habits of Creative Mind; inquisitive, collaborative, disciplined, imaginative, persistent. NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome back to the Spring Term 2018! We had a very busy end to 2017 with lots of Christmas concerts and festive events. On Thursday December 7th 2017 we held a fundraising day to help buy new playground equipment. It was an amazing day, we wore our Christmas jumpers, saw Father Christmas and sung traditional Christmas carols for our parents and grandparents. The hall was packed to the brim, in fact we thought the line of parents and grandparents was never going to end. There was tea, coffee and mince pies as well as a raffle and tombola. Great fun was had by all and we raised over £2,300. Many thanks goes to everyone who supported our fundraising day. Check out all the photographs on our new school website, www.newtonprimary.co.uk. This term we have more exciting fundraising days planned, all the money we raise will be going towards our new playground equipment, which we really need. BRYNTEG SCHOOL

In the ‘run up’ to Christmas Brynteg School were busy with their fundraising ideas for the Santa Appeal. All form classes had one thing in common, to raise as much money as possible to purchase presents for families in Bridgend who find Christmas a difficult time of year financially. Historically Brynteg have endeavoured to fundraise as much as possible for this cause and this year was no exception. What a fantastic year of fundraising for the Santa Appeal we have had. Brynteg has raised a staggering £4,757.32. We bought presents for 160 children in the Bridgend area including 8 Brynteg pupils and a donation of £500.00 to the Women’s Refuge. In other news our annual Carol Service on 19th December was an opportunity for us, as a school community, to come together. The evening provided an opportunity for our talented pupils to perform and this was truly an evening of celebration. A musical treat with performances from pupils across all year groups and abilities performing Christmas songs and music. The pupils who took part were such a credit to the school. J L Davies

School reports PORTHCAWL PRIMARY

Our school is such a busy and exciting place that it is always difficult to decide what to write about! We are very enthusiastic about our new twinning project which was arranged by our Eco Committee. It will help raise awareness of global citizenship and make new friends. With the help from Phil and Kath from Y Pont, we have been twinned with a school in Mbale, Uganda. Two teddies, Dylan and Dafydd, (dressed in Welsh clothes) have spent the day in our school, having their photographs taken in different classes. Dylan and Dafydd are taking the photos to Mbale later this month and hopefully will bring new photos back! As a lead school for Literacy teaching, we have just welcomed teachers from across South Wales to observe our teachers and children working on Visual Literacy. Visitors are always impressed by the enthusiasm of our children and the high quality of their writing. We are extremely proud of our children and it is a pleasure to share our expertise with other schools. If you would like to find out more about us, please ring 01656 815660 to arrange a visit – we love showing people around. Jo Rowley Head Teacher

WALES AIR AMBULANCE Pil Primary School were honoured to receive an Air Ambulance Mission Award in recognition of their fundraising and support of the charity. The award came one year to the day a pupil attending the school required the services of the Air Ambulance. School staff completed a walk up Pen Y Fan raising £1,280 for the charity to show their appreciation of the valuable work of the emergency services. Paul Canning from the Air Ambulance attended the school to present the award and led engaging workshops with pupils from Reception to Year 6. Yours sincerely N Pryce Head Teacher 26 | seaside news

ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL As we welcome back pupils and staff to school for the New Year we look forward to the challenges of this new term. Our first week back was very exciting with excellent results for GCSE Mathematics November examinations. Congratulations to pupils on their results and thank you to staff for supporting pupils with their revision. The hard work certainly paid off. Last week, Welsh National Opera Youth & Community Project presented a whole day workshop project based on WNO’s ground breaking VR experience, Magic Butterfly & Puccini’s Tosca. This was an amazing experience for everyone involved and will be followed up with a visit to Wales Millennium Centre in February when pupils will enjoy a performance of Tosca. We also look forward to welcoming Amanda Blanc, CEO of AXA as part of the Speaker4Schools scheme who will be addressing Year 12 ICT pupils and inspiring Year 9 girls. Half term pupils will be jetting off to the Pyrenees, skiing. We wish them bon voyage and safe skiing! Poets corner IF I COULD SEE YOU ONE MORE TIME If I could see you one more time, Still in your bodily form, I would give you cwtches, And take you to our earthly home.

I would hold your hand for comfort, Just like you did when I was small, Because many years ago you had to leave us, When you answered Gods call. Even though many years have lapsed, The memories of you are still strong inside, I recall the tears and smiles of joy on your face, On the sad day on which you died. We hated to see you in discomfort, We hated to see you in so much pain, If I had one wish it would be simple, Just to see my Dad on earth once again. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

CHRISTIAN SOLDIER

You who heard the steady drum beat, and responded to its call Obedient, you would wait on each command You were always fit and ready, to challenge or attack Such as you became the guardians of our land But you’ve heard another drum beat and answered Heaven’s King Your life now given to follow his command Though your strength be found in weakness, ‘tis your joy to serve him still Faithful soldier, it’s in Christ alone you stand. A YEAR PASSED

So passed another year Shook galaxies and heaven’s tears Sitting giants all but dwell One triumphant, the other but a shell. The world will aspire, Desires soon expire Leaving a trail of malevolent fire Still it is dire. Needless to say we do what may, Ships at bay Farmers make hay That is enough for today. A QUILT’S LIFE

As I lie here, listening to you breathe, A flood of memories washes over me, Of a time when I was drawing life. The soft touch of your mother’s fingers, Sewing in the warm glow of the fire. So I was born, a patchwork history of your lives. I hugged your shoulders warmly, As you gave birth on a chill winter’s evening. Heard the newborn cry of your tiny son. I treasured the first glow of dawn, Children creeping in for a cuddle, Tucked them up safe and cosy when they were ill. I felt your love for your husband. Felt your tears of grief when he died. Now we grow old together, Tired and weary, frail and faded. As I feel your last breath, a gentle sigh, I know my time will not be long. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

NATWEST

I’ve heard it in the news today Natwest Porthcawl is closing in May. I cannot understand the sense, to close this branch will cause incense. Cant somebody make this nonsense stop, soon there will be no point coming to Porthcawl to shop, I want to bank in my local branch, Not in a city cattle ranch. How can a business bank cash down the phone, and for lots of people internet banking’s a groan. Whenever I visit the banks always busy, With local business owners and little old biddies. Natwest has a good reputation in town, So the closure will cause more than one frown. Can the chamber of commerce stop this going ahead? Before the town looses another bank figurehead. As locals we shouldn’t be pushed around, we should voice our concern and stand our ground. Don’t let our town loose the things that we need, due to corporate cost cutting and management greed. Think of the girls who solve problems to tricky, Judith and Alison not forgetting Vicky. I don’t want to deal with someone I don’t know, So lets try and stop it don’t let it go! Local news HARBOURSIDE NEWS! We are excited to announce that our Boat Lift installation has been completed at Porthcawl Marina. The successful installation signals another milestone for Porthcawl Harbourside CIC. The new crane was manufactured by Ascom and installed by Anthony Laverton (Marine Equipment Trader) who has done an outstanding job. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the team that ensured that everything went smoothly including Coastal Communities Funding, Mark from M&C Civils, Davies Cranes and James (our electrician). The new facility brings a valuable service to boat owners, greatly increasing the capacity of the Marina; allowing non-berth holders to launch from Porthcawl’s rapidly developing Harbour Quarter. It will enable existing boat owners to lift their boats out of the water for dockside cleaning, repairs and maintenance, and will also mean that commercial fishermen will be able to land their catch more economically. Additionally, the RNLI will be able to access their rescue boat out of the water locally, rather than having to travel further along the coast. The £300,000 investment from Coastal Communities also provided essential funding for an additional member of staff. Don’t forget that our interactive new website – www.porthcawlmaritimecentre.co.uk - is now live.

RECYCLING SCHEME MOVES INTO THE NEXT PHASE We’re moving to the next phase of the new recycling arrangements that recently scored a 74 per cent recycling rate – the county borough’s highest ever result. This was only possible because the vast majority of residents have all embraced the new procedures. I’m aware that there are still areas in which the new arrangements need to improve in order to ensure consistent levels of service, and we are continuing to focus closely on this with our waste partners, Kier. We are also contacting homes that aren’t recycling as much as they could and are putting out excess bin bags. Help and support on doing this will be offered, and stickers placed on excess bags containing recyclable items that need to be removed. As a very last resort, persistent offenders will be issued with fixed penalties. Recycling is a lot easier than it seems - cardboard, cartons, tetra packs, newspapers, magazines, junk mail, envelopes, plastic containers, foil trays, cans, glass bottles, food waste, absorbent waste and more can all be recycled, so there is very little household waste left that needs to go into a bin bag. I’d like to thank all residents for their efforts – more details can be found at www.recycleforbridgend.wales COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

GOOD NEWS FOR NEW YEAR IN PORTHCAWL As we start a new year, there is some light at the end of a long tunnel for Porthcawl. The town has been caught in a decadelong limbo where nothing has happened to regenerate the town. False dawns have brought disappointment after two supermarket chains pulled out of the plans to redevelop Salt Lake and the Hillsboro Place car park. But as 2018 gets underway, there is real hope that the deadlock over this plan has been broken by a deal between BCBC, which owns most of the land, and the private leaseholders at Salt Lake. They have agreed to sell-out their interests in this land for £3.3m, which the council is paying for out of its capital fund. It is hoped that this money will kick-start the plan and open up the way for a mixed development at this vital seafront location. But it is crucial that, this time around, the council properly consults residents about what should happen. A revised Porthcawl regeneration plan must reflect what locals would like to see as well as showing some ambition by creating facilities which will complement the new Maritime Centre under construction nearby and give the town’s tourism sector a boost. INSPIRATIONAL WILDERNESS A few months ago, it was great to meet some members from the Wilderness Allotment Association in Porthcawl. Over a cup of tea and a cake- a lovely scone with homemade strawberry jam, I had the opportunity to hear about the allotment committee’s community engagement activities and to express my personal congratulations on their recent successes. It was wonderful to hear that the Wilderness Allotment Association had been recognised with two awards; a very prestigious European award given by the Council of Europe and a Green Flag award, from Keep Wales Tidy. These awards are fantastic achievements. It was interesting to meet a couple of members from Trinity Care’s ‘Grow Your Own’ Gardening Club. They were very passionate and enthusiastic about gardening and told me about some of the wide range of fruit and vegetables that they grow at the allotments. Some of the produce has been used in soups, ratatouille and in cakes. I also met with pupils from Porthcawl Comprehensive School’s History Club. They explained about their WW1 Allotment Project and about some of the activities they were involved in, including looking at what vegetables were grown on allotments during WW1. UNLOCKING THE KEY TO NEW REGENERATION

HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE FUTURE OF COUNCIL-RUN TOILETS

As I write these words, Bridgend County Borough Council is in the final stages of agreeing a deal to unlock the next round of major regeneration in Porthcawl. Shortly before Christmas, the authority agreed to use £3.3m capital funding to purchase the leasehold on Salt Lake. This will remove conflicting interests, break a development impasse that could last for another 16 years, and enable new regeneration work to benefit the town. The land forms a crucial part of the council’s phase one regeneration plans, but has remained subject to the terms of an owner’s agreement as well as longstanding leases which will be in place until 2033. The decision to purchase the leasehold was taken following two independent valuations of the land as well as consultation with the Wales Audit Office. The council will seek to recover the £3.3m cost as part of any development deal, and new coastal defences, highway improvements, roads, utilities and parking will also be required. As one of the largest waterfront development sites in Wales, we want to maximise the opportunities that this represents for the benefit of residents and visitors alike, and I hope to bring you further positive news very soon.

By 2020, Bridgend County Borough Council estimates that it will have had to make savings of approximately £70million to balance the books. While it is impossible to cover such a huge sum without having a significant effect on council services like care for the elderly and schools, we have been able to limit some of it - for example, by working in partnership with organisations such as Halo and Arwen to run local leisure centres and libraries. However, it also means that we are being forced to take a very reluctant look at how public toilets are provided across the area once more. We recognise that public toilets are an important asset, but the reality of the situation means that we have to seek new ways of providing them. For example, facilities at Griffin Park are being transferred over to Porthcawl Town Council, and the comfort scheme – where shops, pubs and restaurants receive grants to make toilets available to the public – could also be extended further. To have your say about this, you can complete an online survey at www.bridgend.gov.uk/consultation. Various alternative formats can also be obtained by calling 01656 643664 or emailing consultation@bridgend.gov.uk The deadline for receiving responses is Friday 30th March.

HAVE YOU HAD YOUR MOT? Prevention is always preferable to treatment when it comes to illness, and now new initiatives are being created to encourage people to think in this way. This is especially true when it comes to Cancer survival rates. Early detection for breast and cervical cancer is already saving over 6000 lives a year due to screening being available on the NHS. Up to 2000 lives are predicted to be saved from bowel cancer by 2025 through the same methods. Organisations, such as the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, are now encouraging the same kind of vigilance when it comes to our lungs. The figures speak for themselves, 62% of those screened were sent for further tests, most for minor issues, but catching minor issues early may prevent major problems developing. Initiatives like the one led by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, hosting lung screenings in the heart of communities, not only helps prevents illness, but also relieves the stress on an overburdened NHS, especially at this time of year. Remember to think prevention and get your own personal MOT. MADELEINE MOON MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

Jager is a handsome 3 year old German Shepherd. He can be a bit worried when first meeting people, but does come round with some time and patience and for a nice tasty treat. Once Jager does know you he can be extremely affectionate. He enjoys his walks and having a good run off lead and playing with his toys. He will need further training on his recall and on his lead walking as he can be strong. He does get on with other dogs, but does prefer quiet and calm dogs. Jager is looking for an experienced home that has had German Shepherds before or similar breeds. New owners will need to be prepared to make multiple visits to the centre to build up a relationship with him. He is house-trained and can be left for a few hours and he also travels well in the car. Jager can live with children 14 years old and above who are used to big breeds. He is a really sweet boy who will be your friend. If you like your German Shepherds then you will love this handsome boy. If you would like more information on Jager, please pop down to Dogs Trust Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or call 01656 725219. MINI MYSTERY - THE FA CUP STOLEN On 20th April 1895, Aston Villa beat West Bromwich Albion 1 – 0 in the first allMidlands FA Cup final. Bob Chatt scored the winning goal, after only thirty seconds. Valued at £20 and made of silver, the FA Cup was placed on display at William Shillcock, Boot and Shoe Manufacturers, Birmingham, where it attracted an adoring crowd. However, as night fell, it also attracted a burglar. With Inspector Dobbs on the case, the police interviewed members of the criminal underworld, to no avail. Despite an extensive search, the cup was never found, and the FA fined Aston Villa £25 for negligence, using the money to buy a replacement. The mystery remained unsolved until 1958 when Harry Budge, a career criminal who had spent 46 of his 81 years in gaol, confessed to the theft. He informed the police that he’d melted down the cup to make fake half-crowns. However, the police decided that there was not enough evidence to prosecute and the case remains open to this day. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL Despite the onslaught of winter storms our daily watchkeeping continued regardless. In December 2017 we logged and monitored 116 Commercial vessels, 92 Leisure vessels, 1 Military vessel and 20 other categories. We handled 2 logged incidents and monitored 1 incident in December. 525 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during the month. This brings our annual total to 39 logged incidents and 53 monitored incidents during 2017. This made us the 2nd busiest National Coastwatch station in the UK for the number of incidents handled. The majority of these incidents involve us engaging with UK Coastguard at Milford Haven as well as working with Porthcawl RNLI and our local Coastguard Rescue Teams at Porthcawl and Llantwit Major. Our last incident was on New Years Eve 2017, at the time of writing we have already dealt with 2 incidents in 2018. In January we were invited to a Social Evening held by Porthcawl Truckers, who hold an annual gathering on the Salt Lake Car Park. We were delighted to receive a cheque for £500 as one of their beneficiaries. We are grateful for their generosity and wish them safe travelling for 2018. Nick Weedon, Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

With St. Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching many of us will buy cards and gifts to express our love to our partners. But how loving are we really? How can we say we love someone if we don’t know what the word love means? Is love just a feeling, a chemical reaction to attraction, or is it something more. The great apostle Paul says some interesting things about love in his first letter to the Corinthian church, chapter 13: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” The bible teaches us to love as we would want to be loved, and to love as God loves us. The Lord Jesus Christ has given us his famous new commandment: ‘Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another’. Perhaps we can understand love most clearly when we understand the love of God for us in Jesus Christ. Rev.Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

Isn’t it funny, some words seem to acquire different meanings than they once had. Take the word ‘surrender’, which I was always taught was a negative quality. However, the word ‘surrender’ has recently acquired another meaning for me that is not negative, but positive. I had been working very hard on a project for a long time with very little that I could see to show for it. I was beginning to become disheartened. Very slowly, I realised there was another meaning to surrender and that I needed not to give up on the work, but to trust God more, to surrender it to God, and to let God be God for me. Instead of insisting on the outcomes I had in mind or the schedule I kept in my head, surrender to God, as ridiculous as it sounded, was the only sane path. There’s an old saying that goes: “When you’re at the end of your rope, there’s a reason you’re there, let go.” That doesn’t mean giving up. It means remembering who’s in charge, and it’s not you or me. God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

UNDERSTANDING THE NIGHT SKY February is one of the best months to try and identify the patterns of the constellations. The evenings are dark and Orion is high up in the south. The three stars in the belt point downwards to Sirius - the brightest star in the sky and upwards to the red star Aldebaran in Taurus. It doesn’t take a great deal of practice to hop from one constellation to another, particularly if you have a star map or a planisphere, which can be purchased online. There are apps available for mobile phones that can identify any star in the sky although I think it’s more fun to find the constellations using a bit of detective work. Any star that is brighter than Sirius is likely to be a planet. Venus is low down in the west during this month. The others are all grouped together in the morning sky and will rise two hours earlier every month. In fact all the constellations rise two hours earlier each month and travel across the sky from east to west. Next month Orion will have moved westwards and become lower in the sky before disappearing completely by early April. Clive Down FRAS

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age - a self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It’s a unique and exciting organization, which offers life-enhancing opportunities. Retired and semi-retired people come together and learn together, not for qualifications but for its own reward: the sheer joy of discovery! In January we enjoyed visits to concerts at St David’s Hall, Cardiff and our own Pavilion; a talk at the Hi Tide; plus a superb visit to the Clifton Suspension Bridge. All in addition to our regular interest group meets at easily accessible venues across Porthcawl covering 42 different activities from creative writing to crafts; painting to photography; singing to scrabble - with new groups joining our line-up all the time such as Tai Chi and Ukulele. There’s truly something for every taste and interest. And now is a great time to join us, because our membership year runs from January - by joining now you get to enjoy as many classes/ groups as you wish for the year at a cost of just £30. Club features PORTHCAWL SEA CADETS AND GIRLS NAUTICAL TRAINING CORP REUNION Porthcawl Sea Cadets celebrates 75 years of service for young people from Porthcawl and district. Started life in 1942 as TS Seaflower operating from a wooden shack next to the skating rink that was then on Cosy Corner. Two early ‘Sea Cadets’ stalwarts were Chief Bentley, a colourful and well-respected Porthcawl Harbourmaster and John Williams, who sadly recently died, who gave decades of service to Porthcawl RNLI. Since that time a succession of dedicated volunteer staff have invested their spare time for no reward other than the satisfaction of seeing young cadets develop skills and provide them with character and a sense of citizenship. Around 1964 the wooden unit on Cost Corner blew down in a storm so the unit transferred to the current unit on the eastern Breakwater with a new name, TS St David. This ‘temporary structure’ was built during World War II as a ‘dropping off point’ en-route to hospital for rescued airmen who had been shot down over the channel. An extension to the rear was built by unit members and local residents shortly afterwards. The unit had no toilets or fixed heating, and that is the situation to this day. In our 75th year we enter a new chapter as the existing unit is no longer fit for purpose and now has to be demolished as did the old Girls Nautical Training Corp unit which its self was demolished by the owners BCBC around three years ago. Feedback from current and past cadets is that many would like the opportunity to ‘say goodbye’ to TS St David as Porthcawl Sea Cadets returns to its roots on Cosy Corner firstly within the transitional building and then a brand- new facility within the Maritime Centre. A Reunion event has been organised for Saturday February 17th 3.00pm til 5pm to have a nostalgic look around TS St David and hear about the new plans. A buffet evening in the Hi-Tide has been organised from 6.00pm on the 17th February for the reunion. We will give a warm welcome to everyone who has ever been a Porthcawl Sea Cadet of a Girls Nautical Training Corp member, Coastguards past and present and any County Borough of Bridgend resident currently serving or veteran of any branch of The Royal Navy. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL WELCOME

On Monday 5th March, Rotary in Porthcawl will once again be saying bonsoir/ willkommen/ bienvenido etc. to a group of international students from the Atlantic College, St Donat’s. It is a very successful occasion that has now become an annual event at the Hi-Tide around St David’s Day and all members and guests look forward to a meal followed by a short talk from each of the students who introduce themselves and their countries with an enormous amount of enthusiasm, talking about their flags, background, politics, culture etc. and they, in turn, experience a very warm Welsh welcome! Also, this year all will be entertained by students from Porthcawl Comprehensive School who will reprise songs from their production of Phantom of the Opera. It has become the custom to use proceeds from the evening to go towards an international appeal and this year Rotary in Porthcawl proposes that their recipient will be familiar to many Porthcawl people. Father Cashin left his Porthcawl parishioners some years ago but many have followed his progress in Zambia, where he runs a mission in the Mongu District of Western Zambia. It is likely that Rotary will be able to help Father Cashin in one of his three large on-going projects – the establishment of a maternity unit. If you would like to know more, or buy a ticket for the evening, please contact Rotarian Andrew Singer at 07817 095992. Ivor Williams

Legal advice TIME LIMITS ON FINANCIAL CLAIMS AFTER DIVORCE Since legal aid cuts were made in 2013, fewer people have access to legal advice as they cannot afford to pay a solicitor privately. One effect of this has been that fewer people are seeking a financial settlement upon divorce. In 2016, there were 107,000 divorces and around 33,000 financial orders made, so there is a considerable disparity. Many people assume that there is a time limit for bringing financial claims upon divorce, especially if they deal with their divorce online and think that if the finances are not dealt with, their claim will fall away. This is not correct in England and Wales, where providing there is no clean break order in place; a claim can be brought at any time. An extreme example of this was the case of Dale Vince and Kathleen Wyatt. They had divorced thirty years ago when there were no marital assets to divide, so no financial order was made. However, in the intervening years, Mr Vince amassed a fortune of around £107million, and because there was no clean break order at the time of their divorce, Ms Wyatt was able to pursue a financial claim against her ex-husband. She sought a lump sum of £1.9 million. Despite the fact that she would have received very little at separation, she was awarded £300,000.00 to meet her needs and to reflect her contribution in caring for the children of the family. This is a very unusual case, given the wealth which had been amassed since the Parties’ divorce, and should not be taken as an indication that a generous settlement would be made in every case where Parties have no clean break order. However, it is worth obtaining legal advice to explore your options if you are divorced without a financial order. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WILL? If you die without having made a will, your assets are automatically distributed according to the rules of intestacy. The distribution depends on whether you are married (or in a registered civil partnership) and whether you have any children. This may well have undesired consequences. Having a will ensures your estate is distributed according to your instructions and wishes. You should firstly consider who your executors will be. These are the people you trust to administer your estate according to your will. When making a Will it would be helpful for your executors if you keep a clear written summary of your assets (and debts). You should consider who the Beneficiaries of your estate will be. Your spouse or partner is typically the first beneficiary you will want to provide for. Other beneficiaries may include relatives, friends, charities and other organisations you would like to make gifts to. Your will can name classes of beneficiary (e.g. all your grandchildren – including those who may be unborn at the time of writing the will). The will should also take into account what will happen if a beneficiary predeceases you: for example, whether you would want a deceased child’s share of your estate to pass instead to his or her family. The will should make it clear what is to be given to each beneficiary. Gifts can be put in trust rather than made outright. For example, you might use a trust to control assets that are being passed to children (or young adults) or to individuals who are incapable of looking after their own financial affairs. Wills commonly include an indication of your wishes for your funeral, though these are not binding on your executors. You may want to prepare a separate letter of wishes providing guidance for your executors. For example, such guidance might be aimed at helping them understand how you would want different beneficiaries of a trust to be treated. Again, this is not binding on your executors. Finally, it is worth reviewing your will regularly, particularly if there are changes in your family circumstances, your financial position or in the law relating to wills and inheritance tax. Your will can be amended as necessary with an appropriate ‘codicil’, or a new will drawn up and the existing will revoked.

DIVORCE: DISASTER OR DAMAGE LIMITATION? I am not saying that divorce is ever a “ walk in the park”, it’s not, but does it have to be a disaster? I have been a Family Lawyer for over thirty years which means that I have seen many divorcing couples. My role is to advise on the law that regulates and applies to a given situation. However, there is an extra dimension which comes from experience, and that is helping people understand their individual circumstances and doing what is personally best for them. Divorce is not a “one size fits all“ which is why a family lawyer needs to understand you, as a client, before applying the law. As my title suggests, I believe that when a marriage fails we need to stop looking at it as a disaster and instead, try some damage limitation. However emotionally hurt , one or both, of the parties are, life goes on. It is unlikely that the combined resources of the parties will now sustain two households to the same standard and we will need to identify the extent of available resources. After that, my aim is to guide clients through their divorce to a conclusion that is right for them, having their best interests at the forefront at all times. In that way they can look back on an experience which, whilst not being the best time of their lives, was neither, a disaster. By Jayne Fletcher, Solicitor and Accredited Member of the Law Society’s Family Panel.

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

Well it’s the beginning of another year and our WI Xmas Party in December went very well - a very enjoyable social afternoon was enjoyed by all, particularly as we were put in the Xmas spirit by the Porthcawl Choral Society who gave us a lovely carol Concert – helped along with mince pies, Xmas cake and mulled wine! Going back a month to the November meeting, Ceri gave us a marvellous demonstration on the making of Xmas wreaths and other Xmas items – what a clever lady! Also in November, some of our members enjoyed a trip to Tredegar House. This month, we look forward to a talk on the charity Emmaus by Mr. Tom Clark. As usual new members will be warmly welcomed. We meet at All Saints Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of each month between 2 and 4pm. For more information, please contact Sue Strachan on 713124. Sue Strachan

New Year is here and we held their first meeting of 2018. In our usual venue The Talbot Centre in Kenfig Hill, 2pm to 4pm, 2nd Tuesday of the month. Turnout was good as several of our members are down with the flu which is doing the rounds. We had three new visitors who we hope will join us. The sad news we had to tell our members was that our president Marjorie Goode has had to step down due to ill health; we send her all our good wishes and hope she will still attend our monthly meetings when her health allows. Our deputy president Christine Callaghan will stand in until our next A.G.M. in May. Friends of Mynydd Cynffig presented a cheque of £322 to Carol Hodges for Ovarian Cancer, who gave us a short talk on this subject. W.I. business discussed and a lunch for our members in February was provisionally arranged. Our Scrabble, and Craft groups are up and running and weather permitting our Walking group will follow. Like these three new visitors call in and see us, for a chat, tea and biscuits you might be pleasantly surprised Christine Callaghan

LALESTON WI Our January meeting was held on 4th January. All members who had attended our Christmas Lunch at Tommy Heaneys , The Great House Hotel agreed that it had been a marvellous meal and the icing on the cake had been Tommy Heaney taking time to come and talk to us at the end of our meal. Our year has started with a Beetle Drive attended by 24 members which was great fun. The raffle was won by Connie Jones and the competition for an insect item won by Diane Marshall. Members were informed that this was our 50th year and a suggestion box was produced for members ideas on how they would like to celebrate this year. The next meeting of our W.I. will be on February 1st when we would be having a talk by The Dogs Trust. Our meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7.15pm The Blandy Hall, Laleston. Anyone wishing to join us are most welcome, more information can be had by contacting Diane Marshall on 01656 656600.

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS I couldn’t give you news of our Christmas festivities last month as these reports have to be sent in to Seaside News early in the month so forgive me for talking about Christmas now! A lunch was enjoyed at the Bridgend Catering College organised by Ruth Lloyd. Our December meeting started on a sad note as members stood in memory of Yvonne Cooper, a long time guild member who served on committee and will be sadly missed. Many members attended her funeral. But it was a special meeting as it was our 700th! A cake made by Judith Orphan was cut by chairman Diana Richardson and President Freda Rodger. Entertainment was provided by Rev. Clive Williams with fascinating facts about Christmas cards, carols, trees and even bagpipes! Our usual hearty tea followed and guess what? I won the raffle for the Christmas hamper! This months meeting is on February 14th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Mrs Norah Clarke will be telling us about Guide Dogs. We know she is a puppy walker for the Guide dogs so hope she will bring one along. Do come and see. Dorothy Thomas Tel: 772157 40 | seaside news

NEWTON WI On January 3rd we held the first meeting of 2018, our president Jennifer welcomed members old and new, by proposing a toast wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year, also wishing Joan a happy 80th birthday with a lovely cake, which we all shared with her at the end of the evening. Jill George was the ‘Competition Champion’ for 2017, she was presented with the ‘Edna Jones winners Cup’, well done Jill. The speaker for the evening was Mrs Joyce James, who spoke very knowledgeably on the meaning of Nursery Rhymes’. Apparently they were never meant for the nursery but were mostly used for promoting political satire of the time and historical events, a very interesting talk. The Christmas Party, held on the 13th of December, was a great success. Fabulous meal, served by Committee members and helpers, with good ‘Home Entertainment’ to end the evening with Father Christmas, putting in an appearance. On January 11th. Ten members boarded the X2 Cardiff bus en route for the Pantomime at the New Theatre, preceded by a delightful lunch, we all had a great time. Thanks to Shirley for organising. For more information ring Jennifer on 784715. M. Freeman

SKER WI – HAPPY NEW YEAR On January 11th 2018, 44 members of Sker WI met for the first meeting of the New Year. The meeting was the usual mix of business and fun, with a good catch up with friends after the Christmas break thrown in for good measure. After voting on this year’s resolutions, members enjoyed a musical quiz compiled by Mike Boyle’s, who had stepped in when our guest speaker was unable to attend due to ill health. . The next year’s programme is filled with exciting and intriguing guest speakers, enjoyable activities and more chances to learn new things with friends old and new. We meet at 7pm at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village on the second Thursday of the month. You will be made very welcome if you want to come along to join us for a visit. You can find out more at our Facebook page: SkerWI@NottageVillage Christine Beynon

Business & finance OUT OF WORK SICK OR LAID OFF? With the first month of the year now gone and all the bills from Christmas, especially card bills, having landed on your doorstep, you probably feel that things are a little tight at the moment. And that’s with you still receiving your normal income. Well you’re not alone and a great many people row the same boat as you do. Until they lose their oars, that is. If you think it’s tight with your income coming in, just imagine what it would be like having no income or much less income than you have currently. An horrendous situation to be in – and it won’t take long before you start sliding down the slippery slope. Now you can either ignore it or you can speak to us about how to maintain an income even when things go wrong. Just before Christmas gone, hidden in all the financial news was the fact that mortgage repossessions had risen for the first time in a good while and could continue to rise. Add to the example of the collapse of Carillion, which may have a huge knock-on effect, and it becomes clear how easily the unexpected could put people out of work or dramatically cut earnings, especially overtime, etc. Pick up the phone and ask for advice on how a scheme can help you protect all that is important to you – a number of companies are offering very cost effective and affordable solutions. Call us on 01656 782545 for an informal chat. For those of you already in retirement and who have already taken out equity from your property, you may benefit from looking at how interest rates have fallen dramatically over the last year or so and we may be able to help you switch to cheaper lender, although this is subject to how the figures work out. A free quote on this could be really helpful to you. And if you have an interest-only mortgage but not the capital to pay it off, we have lenders who are catering especially for people like you. Call us on 782545. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial (The new name for Cambria Financial) 01656 782545

HAVE YOU ALREADY UNLOCKED YOUR EQUITY? Following the interest received in last month’s article, I thought it would be helpful to expand further on your Lifetime Mortgage options. Over the past 10 years, thousands of pensioners have used lifetime mortgages to capitalise on rising property prices, and convert the equity in their home into a cash lump sum or regular income. However, many fail to realise that you can actually switch your existing lifetime mortgages, in much the same way as you would remortgage a standard residential mortgage. By switching your lifetime mortgage you can take advantage of the lower interest rates currently available and therefore reduce the amount of interest accrued on the loan. As well as potentially releasing further cash from your home. All the money released is completely tax free! You can use the funds to do with as you wish. It could be used to renovate your home, boost your retirement income, help your loved ones with an early inheritance or book the holiday of your dreams. The choice is entirely yours. 42 | seaside news

With a lifetime mortgage the interest on the sum you’ve released builds up over your lifetime and will typically be repaid out of the proceeds of your estate. Summary of Lifetime Mortgage features: · Unlock your money and stay in the home you love · Retain full property ownership · Pay no interest until you die or move · Never owe more than your house is worth · No proof of income is required · Option of a single lump sum or smaller drawdowns as and when required Seeking professional independent financial advice before signing up to a Lifetime mortgage is essential, due to the fact that your estate value, state benefits and tax position could be affected. Abacus Assurance can provide advice after reviewing your circumstances to establish if a lifetime mortgage is suitable. To book a free consultation call: 01656 772222. Abacus Assurance FS Ltd is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. A lifetime mortgage is secured against your home.

LIFETIME ISA (LISA) The Lifetime ISA is designed to help you buy your first home, or to help fund retirement. It is a tax-free wrapper that lets you save up to £4,000 every year and can be held as cash savings or stocks and shares investments. For the purposes of this article, I will concentrate on what I think is the most valuable benefit i.e. helping first time buyers to purchase a home. Any young adult considering or who is currently saving towards buying a house, should put the opening of a LISA at the top of their list of things to do before April 5th this year for the following reason… FREE MONEY! You must be aged 18 or over but under 40 when you open a LISA and you can save up to £4,000 a year as a lump sum or by putting in cash when you can. The state will then add a 25% bonus on top. So if you save £1,000, you’ll have £1,250 and if you save the full £4,000, you’ll have £5,000 and that’s before interest or growth. The bonus is only paid on contributions made in each tax year until you buy your first house (or attain the age 50) with the first year’s bonus added to your account in April/May 2018, it’s then paid monthly. The whole amount will receive interest or investment growth if investing in stocks and shares. Ensure that you open a LISA before the cut-off age of 40 as you can continue to save into the LISA until the day before your 50th birthday. A word of warning, make sure the money that you set aside in the LISA is not needed for anything other than your first house purchase (or retirement) as withdrawals will attract a 25% penalty. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

Spring is in sight at last! Most of us have had delivery of our seed orders and, any day soon, the plug plant orders will begin to arrive. Then our new gardening year can really begin. Our club shop (affectionately known as ‘The Hut’) is in the process of being restocked ready for the new season and pallets of excellent quality compost have been ordered. The shop is a ‘not for profit’ outlet for club members only and carries a wide range of gardening products. A number of members have been discussing what plants we are going to grow for this year’s plant sale. We focus on bedding mostly and grow a number of varieties of vegetables to sell as well. In recent years we have also been growing on perennial plants from either divisions or cuttings taken the previous year, which has proven to be very popular. All of the money we raise at the sale goes towards maintaining our clubhouse. In recent years the fundraising along with generous donations and grants have allowed us to improve our fire safety precautions, disabled access and general building maintenance. New members are always welcome – find out more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk Joyce Pegg

It’s said that if it wasn’t for Valentine’s Day February would be the same as January! With a few more gardening jobs! Time to prune late flowering shrubs including Buddleia, these flower best on spring growth, it’s a terrific job if you’ve had a bad day as you can be quite brutal with them! Also prune Clematis, cutting the growth to about 12 inches from the ground, cutting each stem back to just above a healthy bud, remember Clematis like their heads in the sun but their roots in the shade, so it helps to put a large stone at the base of the plant. In the vegetable plot, one third needs to be limed each year where your brassicas will be, these all like alkaline soil. When chitting potatoes, beware, these need to be keep in a cool light place, if you encourage growth too early, energy will be wasted! Our AGM is on February 6th in Cefn Social Club all are welcome! Did you know – one theory about Valentine’s Day is that it derives from a raucous Roman festival where the men stripped naked and spanked young maidens in hopes of upping their fertility! INTERPERSONAL GENEROSITY The Buddha emphasized a cooperative model of relationship with other human beings. Part of this emphasis can be found in the Sigolavada Sutta. In this teaching, the Buddha gives a framework for consideration. Giving is personal, but here it comes alive in the interpersonal (Meeting others). In the process of giving, he identifies particular relationships that require constant concern, consideration and offering. The practice is really simple. Set a side each month a period of calm. Bring to mind people who reciprocate in the process of giving. Picture your cultivated good qualities and those qualities that they possess. Visualise sustaining this relationship through giving, contemplation and kindness. With this held space, pull from the experience a deep intention to further cultivate and offer. States of sympathetic Joy may arise. Use your calendar to plan an invitation and make your prepared mind the ‘well’ that acts towards others. If you do read the doctrine of the Sigolavada Sutta, you will find that he gives a very balanced perspective. There are those relationships that require cutting off and abandoning, there are those who continue to cause pain and misery. Walk away from pain. The Buddha in this teaching, gives the key relationship framework of Parents, Teachers (not only in the school sense), Couples (your partner), Friends, Employers, Wise teachers. You could consider the framework or simply design your own. The practice is one of cultivation and action. You may notice that you step in the shoes of all these descriptions, so by considering others you consider your good actions too. What do you notice when this process is actually lived? Neville Evans

AN APPLE A DAY! Apples are a good source of fibre and vitamin C. They also contain polyphenols, which can have numerous health benefits and may aid weight loss in several ways. They’re also particularly filling due to their high fibre content. Apples promote heart health in several ways, they’re high in soluble fibre, which helps lower cholesterol. They also have polyphenols, which are linked to lower blood pressure and stroke risk. Eating apples is linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, this is possibly due to their polyphenol antioxidant content. The type of fibre in apples feeds good bacteria and may be the reason they protect against obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Apples have several naturally occurring compounds that may help fight cancer. Observational studies have linked them to a lower risk of cancer. Arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The Eclair CM3 Cameflex camera, with its reflex viewfinder and ease of handholding, helped to bring about the ‘New Wave’ French cinema movement of the late 1950s. Crossing the Atlantic, during production of ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ (1968), it was mounted on a skateboard for one notable scene by cameraman Haskell Wexler, and in ‘C’Etait Un Rendezvous’ (1976), French cinematographer Claude Lelouch daringly rigged it up on the front bumper of his Mercedes 450SEL for a hair-raising one-shot eight-minute dash through the early morning streets of Paris – look it up on YouTube, you won’t find much else to touch it. Incidentally, the soundtrack was dubbed with the recording of a Ferrari 275GTB, which explains why you feel as if you are in a high-speed sports car rather than a saloon. My film production company has deliberately acquired, and used, several venerable old movie cameras, 16mm and 35mm, each of which has its own special place in cinema and television history, and if you are a member of a club or society which would like to be given a talk on the subject of classic cine cameras, please contact me for further details. BROADWAY CHORUS SING CHRISTMAS

At a packed All Saints Church in Porthcawl, the Broadway Chorus entertained an enthusiastic audience to its seasonal offering, Sing Christmas. The choir was in good voice as were the soloists Samuel Weaver, Shannon Davies-Evans and Mark Llewelyn Evans. Catherine Mayor provided beautiful flute accompaniment to the rich variety of items put together by conductor Michael Plowman and pianist Liz York. As well as traditional readings, the audience was treated to mince pies and mulled wine and the Broadway Chorus was able to send £1,550 to Macmillan Cancer Support after a most successful evening. BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK After last month’s column plugging Magnum’s British tour, I was amazed to hear their new single, ‘Without Love, on the Radio 2 playlist. Great news for rock music, and the song is taken from the album ‘Lost on the Road to Eternity’. The Stereophonics have added Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday 9th June to their tour. The Manic Street Preachers also play Cardiff at the Motorpoint Arena on 5th May to promote their new album ‘Resistence is Futile’. Bridgend’s Last Flight To Pluto and Those Damn Crows are both recording new material and I will keep you up to speed. Let’s hope Porthcawl drummer Terry ‘TNT’ Thomas makes a full recovery, and that it won’t be long before he’s back behind his drum kit – he’s a top man! I was saddened to hear of the death of Ray Thomas, founder member of prog superstars The Moody Blues. The band is still huge worldwide and will be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in April. It has been a huge inspiration to me in my own musical journey and Ray will be greatly missed. If you have any local music news, give me a text or a call. We have had a busy period in the College over the past two months and one of the big performances was the Pantomime ‘Camelot’, which ran for 20 shows. Congratulations to all the students from Creative Arts who worked on the show. The pantomime represents a collaboration between the different courses in the college, Drama, Production Arts, Music and Hair & Beauty. At Bridgend College we always praise the learners for their hard work but I would like to say congratulations to the staff for their commitment, motivation and support that they give to the learners to help them create a professional production. The panto production was directed by Gareth Bale, a professional actor and director who has himself appeared in numerous pantomimes across South Wales, and has won plaudits for his performances as Wales rugby international Ray Gravell and Aneurin Bevan, Founder of the National Health Service. Next month I will be giving a Music and Media update including our trip to Liverpool for Beatlemania. If anyone is interested in any of our courses in Creative Arts please get in contact. COR BRO OGWR’S FESTIVE MUSIC CONCERT

What could be more seasonal than Cor Bro Ogwr’s December concert? An enthusiastic audience thought so, as they joined in with the familiar carols in the second half. The first half of the evening consisted of excerpts from ‘The Messiah’; while most choristers are very familiar with this piece, our conductor Rosie Howarth nevertheless spent a lot of rehearsal time putting on a high shine to its performance, to match the vocal quality of our four soloists, pursuing postgraduate studies at the The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Accompanying the choir was the ‘Cor Bro Ogwr Ensemble’ and our own keyboard accompanist, Glenn Crooks. We were very pleased to welcome many guests; among them were Porthcawl Town Mayor, Councillor Lorrie Desmond Morris, and Hugh Irranca Davies AM. More festive spirit was provided during the interval bar. Now we are rehearsing Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’ and Mozart’s ‘Vesperae Solennes’ for our Spring concert. For more information on the choir and our interesting events, check our website cor-bro-ogwr.com or find us on Facebook. If your New Year’s Resolution is to improve your health, then join us - singing is good for body and soul! Dominique Spearey

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Club Competition One, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Members could enter two images into each section. Dennis Russ from Swansea judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was David Jones for ‘1 Headlight and 2 Horses’. The winner of the Digital Trophy was Richard Jenkins for ‘Raindrops’. Congratulations to both David and Richard for winning the competitions and a big thank you to all participants for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings - 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk Geoff Baker Tel: 01639 851050 Email: compsec@pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk

Deadline date for the March 2018 issue: Thursday 15th February PORTHCAWL COMMUNITY SINGERS Following the last concert in December Porthcawl Choral Society decided to change direction, change name and sing two and three part songs, which we hope will be appealing to our singers and audiences. Our numbers have lessened and we can no longer perform major choral works but will sing songs from the shows etc. as in recent concerts. Come and join us in 2018 where you will be made most welcome. Singing has been said recently to be good for you well being. Practices are in Trinity Church Porthcawl on Mondays 7.15pm to 9.15pm. There are no auditions and ability to read music is not essential. What’s on CINDERELLA BREAKS BOX OFFICE RECORDS AT THE GRAND PAVILION, PORTHCAWL

The doors have closed on the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl’s most successful pantomime season ever. Cinderella smashed all previous box office records during its four-week run, much to the delight of the venue and producers Imagine Theatre. Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust said “This is a record breaking panto for the Grand Pavilion and has beaten all our records which date back to 1998! It’s the highest grossing panto ever with over 17,500 tickets sold. We believe in bringing quality product to all our venues and making it as affordable as possible. Our competitively priced tickets have been extremely popular with patrons this year and the take up from schools has been extremely high”.

Stephen Boden, Managing Director of Imagine Theatre says “each year the reputation of the Grand Pavilion panto has been growing and to have more people than ever before seeing the show is just brilliant”. Richard Hughes continued with “I would just like to say thank you to each and every one of you that made this year’s panto so special and we can’t wait to bring you Sleeping Beauty. It may seem a long way away but tickets are already being booked so don’t wait too long before getting your tickets!” The Grand Pavilion is managed by Awen Cultural Trust, a registered charity, in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council. Awen has already announced their 2018 panto for the Grand Pavilion - Sleeping Beauty, the pantomime of your dreams. After such a smash hit this season it is recommended you book early to avoid disappointment. For more information or to book tickets contact the Grand Pavilion box office on 01656 815995 or visit www.grandpavilion.co.uk 54 | seaside news

James is a former pupil of Porthcawl Comprehensive and Porthcawl Primary. He is currently studying at Bryntirion Comprehensive. He began playing football for Porthcawl aged 5 in 2009 for the Under 7s and continued to play for the Club until 2013 where he left to join Cornelly Utd Under 11s. James spent a season at Cornelly Utd by which time he had successfully trialled for Pen y Bont FC Academy at Under 11s. The Striker spent 2 seasons at Pen y Bont FC Academy. He has also represented Bridgend Borough Schools over recent seasons and has been a regular starter at 9. James was invited for a 6 week trial at Cardiff City FC in October 2017 and successfully completed the trial period and was registered formally with the Club. Many thanks must go to all of the Coaches who have given their time and knowledge in developing James as a footballer: Marc Delbridge, Nick Clift, James Brown, Andrew Bowden, Gareth Beale, Mark Adams, John Spence, Lee Flay, Kurtis Grant, Nigel Jordan, Lee Adams, Mark Dewar, Glen Murdoch, Martin Pearson, Ben Stait, Dan Benham, Jason Bekker, Neil Leek and Byron Anthony. RUNNER WILL’S COAST PATH CHALLENGE

Will Edwards of the Porthcawl Runners has begun his attempt to cover the entire Wales Coast Path throughout 2018. He has set himself the challenge of completing the full official 870 miles (1,400 kilometres) of the path in sections, while also raising money for both prostate cancer and breast cancer care. Will has long been inspired by Bill Bryson’s book A Walk in the 56 | seaside news

Woods, which is about Bryson’s attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail. But it is the heroic battles of people much closer to home which have given Will the extra motivation – fellow Porthcawl Runners who have been diagnosed with prostate and breast cancer in recent times. The path starts from Flintshire in the north and runs around the whole Welsh coast to Chepstow in the south. Will is fundraising via his JustGiving page. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/william-edwards11 He is also blogging his journey at: wilfyporthcawl.wordpress.com Will also took inspiration from another fellow Porthcawl Runner Mark Bowen who, on New Year’s Eve, completed his own challenge of running on all 365 days throughout 2017. He clocked around 2,200 kilometres in total and, in doing so, also raised more than £1,500 for Many Tears Animal Rescue in Llanelli. Carl Field

REST BAY JUNIORS INTRODUCING OUR CAPTAINS Lewys has been a member of Rest Bay Lifeguard Club since he was young and Erin for the last five years, both describe being elected as Junior Captains as an absolute honour… here’s what they had to say about the role they have undertaken for the past year. “Rest Bay has always had a special place in my heart and I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the role”, says Lewys. “There is something extremely satisfying about being able to help others around you, motivate and see them progress”. Erin said, “I have had the greatest time and have met so many new people. I have been able to do so many new things I never thought I was capable of and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to be junior captain”. As captains we aim to make everyone’s experience of lifeguards one to remember, making sure everyone is involved and having a good time, both in and outside of training. We have organised several social events, including beach barbecues and laser tag, which has brought club members together contributing towards the already wonderful atmosphere at the club. We would encourage any young person to join Rest Bay, whether you want to compete or just gain some lifeguard skills; there are lots of opportunities for everyone, with the emphasis on having fun! We look forward to welcoming you to Rest Bay! Lewys Williams and Erin Richards Rest Bay Junior Captains

PORTHCAWL RFC UNDER 8S TEAM TRAVEL TO THE OSPREYS’ TAGFEST!

PORTHCAWL RUGBY UNDER 9S

Happy New Year to all readers! We played 2 games before Christmas, 2 local teams that played very well Pencoed 1 try – Porthcawl 15 tries Porthcawl 5 tries – Maesteg Quins 3 tries The Christmas period was a chance for the boys to have a well deserved break. Due to the days that the New Year fell, we started back without training to prepare for their first games. We travelled to Cardiff and played a round robin in St Peters against 2 sides that we had not played before. There was no Christmas rustiness from the boys and they were really up for the games. Llanishen 0 tries – Porthcawl 7 tries St. Peter’s 2 tries – Porthcawl 9 tries Geraint Evans Our final rugby experience of 2017 was taking part in Tagfest, organised by Ospreys in the Community. During the festival we played against several teams from across the region, winning all of our games, however more importantly it gave our young players a fantastic variety of experiences. We have a fantastic group of young players, and we are extremely grateful to their parents who support them throughout the busy season. During February we have a busy schedule of weekly fixtures against clubs from across the Ospreys and Blues regions. In March we have been invited to the Ospreys vs Leinster Guiness Pro 14 Match, our team will be VIP guests and in addition to meeting the Ospreys players will have the very privileged opportunity to play a game of rugby on the Liberty Stadium pitch. The season will come to a close at the end of April when we are excited to be taking part in the inaugural Ospreys Challenge rugby festival which is taking place in Porthcawl for the very first time on the weekend of 14th and 15th April. Junior teams from ages under 7’s to under 15’s will come and stay at Porthcawl for the 2 day festival and we look forward to giving them a warm welcome. Lloyd Rowe Under 8s Coach Porthcawl RFC

SURF REPORT: SOUTHERNDOWN AND OGMORE BY SEA The first two weeks of the New Year has been the most consistent surf for a long time with clean waves and offshore winds. 2018 is going to be like this forever! For those who could brave the cold the second week in January saw four days of offshore surf in a row from Southerndown to Rest Bay with the Easterly winds sometimes spoiling the surf at Llantwit. Let’s hope there is more surf like this to come this year with perfect conditions. Back in November a number of our younger local (the only ones brave enough) took on some Llantwit hotties in their local comp. The same names came through for us once again. Well done you guys. Open: 3rd Cieran Hughes Under 18s: 1st Cieran Hughes, 2nd Eli Perrins Davis, 5th Sol Williams Under 14s: 1st Eli Perrins Davies, 2nd Sol Williams, 4th Oskar Perrins David. I’m up for filming surf contests in the future if any surf clubs need a documentary of a competition. David A Batten david@tuskasurf.co.uk www.tuskasurf.co.uk
