PORTHCAWL JOY-RIDERS: CYCLING WITHOUT AGE

A number of Porthcawl volunteer residents held the inaugural meeting of the proposed Cycling Without Age (Porthcawl Chapter) and are looking for more like-minded people to join us to get this exciting project off the ground. Cycling Without Age is a non profit organisation, originally started in Copenhagen. It aims to give local older or disabled people who can no longer cycle, the opportunity to once again enjoy the thrill of cycling by being piloted in an electric Trishaw along the glorious Porthcawl seafront (free of charge). Fundraising will be required to buy the electric powered Trishaws and we are already holding conversations with local businesses and the Town Council. Further meetings will be held, details of which will appear via social media, flyers and posters. We are now seeking volunteers to help set up the Porthcawl Chapter and potentially become a Pilot for one of the Trishaws (training will be given at the appropriate time).

Please follow the link below for further details of this fantastic initiative. To register your interest please contact Steve McCreery on 07791 101081 or email smccreery@hotmail.com https://cyclingwithoutage.org

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS

New Year, new resolutions, new restrictions. The resilience of our runners was apparent throughout the Christmas period and into the New Year. During December club training and track sessions continued as normal with added challenges and incentives proposed by senior coaches Louise Mordue and Wilfy Edwards to help us all through the cold dark days. Special mention to Rhys Mumford who managed to run the equivalent distance in kilometres for each date in December up to Christmas Eve totalling 314k in just 24 days. Then there was the annual Bridgend Festive Four Challenge, which usually closes out the year. However, even though the event was severely hampered because of last minute restrictions placed upon outside exercise / activities in Wales, there was still a high percentage of our club members making up the field, many of whom achieved notable individual performances Zoe Thomas, Joe Mainwaring and Sue Gullick in their respective categories January settled down into the now familiar routine of setting goals for the upcoming year, training for events whilst still wondering whether they will actually take place, and generally remaining positive with regards to physical and mental wellbeing. This is all made that little bit easier with members of the club and its supportive coaches around you whether you are pushing for that little extra effort on a night time trail run or going for that early morning cold water dip in the sea with likeminded friends. To that end, at the end of January we started another ‘couch to 5k’ group in order to promote and encourage another group on their road to enjoying the positive experience of becoming a part of Porthcawl Runners.
