Letters USING MOBILE PHONE WHILST DRIVING Dear Editor, Please, please print this letter, in the hope that the subject of it is a reader of your publication. On Monday 21st November, a day of torrential rain and bad driving conditions, I was standing on the corner of Mary Street by the Pavilion at about 12 midday waiting for my husband to pick me up, when a large car came round the bend. THE DRIVER WAS ACTUALLY USING HIS MOBILE PHONE WHILST TURNING THE BEND!!! It was only 2 weeks since all the publicity about the use of a mobile whilst driving caused the death of a mother and her three children. Whoever you are - don’t you realise the devastation you could cause by your stupidity? Do you have a family? I wish I had been quick enough to read the registration, I would have certainly reported him to the police. I am frustrated and angry that there are still people who consider themselves above the law. Mrs N Williams Porthcawl

SALT LAKE, PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, As most people know, Porthcawl as a town was started in the early 19th century to aid the South Wales Valleys production of coal and iron industry with the construction of the harbour. We still have a wonderful opportunity to create an inner marina the other side of the ‘new’ harbour/marina using half of Salt Lake Car Park as all the original walls are still there to take advantage of! This can be dug out and a wall built halfway to divide salt lake car park. (Imagine a large schooner as a floating restaurant or hotel!). Shops and car parking could then be accommodated in the other half. I feel we owe the beginning of our lovely town to John Brogden and Sons and should protect their legacy by developing their vision and transforming Porthcawl to its former glory for all of us! Dear Editor, In response to Mr Finney’s article concerning Salt Lake Car Park and the planning for the new health centre, would it not be more cost effective (instead of building a new health centre down Newton) to utilise the Glamorgan Holiday Home? You have the advantage of it being kept central, parking would not be an issue, and I am sure that there would be rooms to utilise and give the people of the locality a better service than they have now. It has to be worth looking at the cost savings and the benefits surely? Mr A Almond Porthcawl

Letters DOG, CAT & HORSE MESS

Send us your letter or picture: info@seasidenews.co.uk

WINTER SUNS

Dear Editor, As a responsible dog owner (and by that I mean somebody that picks up after their pet and actually takes the mess home and puts it the bin), I feel it is time the same rules were applied to cat owners as they seem to be exempt from the threat of a fine that dog owners face. It seems that a cat can enter anyone’s garden and use it as their own personal toilet without any comeback on the owner. Imagine what would happen if a dog owner allowed their pet to do this on a neighbours lawn and then walked away without a care. I would also like to know why horse owners don’t dismount and pick up the mess that their animals leave… usually in the middle of the road. It’s not as though they haven’t seen it, its through sheer arrogance and a lack of respect for other road users. The same road users that they expect to slow down to a snails pace in order not to upset their horse. B Mace Newton, Porthcawl

CHOUGHS AT REST BAY Dear Editor, Winter Suns. Anthony Callaghan, Porthcawl

LOCAL PHOTOS

Dear Editor, Please find attached a couple of photos of a rare visitor to Porthcawl. There were eight Choughs in all at Restbay. Should be of interest to your readers? Mike Pugh Porthcawl

A THANK YOU NOTE Dear Editor, Please could you thank via your paper whoever posted my letters I lost last week. On a wet Monday, two important letters containing personal details to myself were lost between Newton and Porthcawl town. They were prepaid, but having traced my steps I was at a loss as to how I had misplaced them. They have however arrived at their destination and I would like to thank whoever posted them for me. Letters SAVE OUR PORTHCAWL CAR PARKS Dear Editor, Porthcawl has three car parks situated in the centre of the town, namely John Street, Hillsboro and Salt Lake. Under BCBC regeneration plans for Porthcawl, the hard fact is that they intend to close two of the three car parks – Hillsboro car park with a supermarket and Salt Lake with the construction of hundreds of houses and flats. These car park closures are in complete contrast to BCBC’s action in Bridgend where they have recently spent thousands of pounds on upgrading a multi-storey car park. Upon its completion, a BCBC spokesperson stated that the car park was essential for the traders and shoppers and I agree with this. It is a tragic mistake to build houses and flats on Salt Lake as it is not only the loss of a car park but the loss of a beautiful view of the coast. It is difficult to understand why BCBC do not build the houses and flats at Sandy Bay where the roads, electricity, water and sewerage systems are already in position from the former caravan site. Porthcawl is becoming one of the most popular seaside resorts in Wales. The number of visitors, cars and coaches is increasing by 5 to 10% every year. Regarding car parking, most of the householders in Porthcawl have one car, and in many cases two and even three cars. When added to the problem of the high volume of traffic coming into Porthcawl during the summer time, especially during bank holidays, this makes parking a nightmare. Considering this, it is therefore unbelievable that BCBC in their wisdom, are reducing the number of car parks in Porthcawl. Councillors and planners in other areas realise that car parks are the necessary lifeline for towns and cities. John Street car park will become the main car park of the town but it has only car parking spaces for 90 cars, which are mainly occupied by the traders and shop staff. Consequently this could result in the motorists of Nottage and Newton being unable to park in the centre of the town through lack of parking spaces. Without car parks, Porthcawl would be ruined, probably causing many shops to close. It would be a case of no motorists – no customers. To prevent this bleak picture taking place, we would need the assistance and support of our local MP and people of Porthcawl to save our car parks. It is essential to have action now and not in the future as it will be too late. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

HISTORY

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM On 4th January 2014, three years ago, a lady named Sian emailed the Museum, explaining that whilst walking her dog Bonnie on Rest Bay beach, she had come across what she thought may be a cannon. It was a cannon. Not only had it appeared on Rest Bay due to the tremendous storms that month, but, when we investigated, a smaller cannon was found nearby. With the help of the Porthcawl RNLI, Paul and Martin, transferred both cannon to the Museum. At the moment the smaller cannon is under scrutiny at the Cardiff University Conservation Department, where the students are working on it. The result so far has revealed that part of the cannon is made of wrought iron, which dates it after 1784, the date that Henry Cort’s puddling process produced such iron. Since its find, various

SCHOOLS GOOD DIABETES CARE AWARD Pil Primary School has received a special award that celebrates schools providing great care and support to children and young people with Type 1 diabetes. It is the first school in Wales to win a Diabetes UK Good Diabetes Care in School Award, which recognises schools across the UK who provide good care and support to children and young people with Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes UK Cymru’s Director Dai Williams said: “Pil Primary School gives outstanding care and support to children and young people with Type 1 diabetes which is why they deserve to be the first school in the country to get our Good Diabetes Care in School Award. We urge all schools to follow their example, as good care in schools means that children and young people with diabetes stay healthy and get the best from their education. The fact that Pil Primary School is doing such a fantastic job of supporting students with Type 1 diabetes shows that good care is achievable in all schools.” Well done and thank you to all the staff for their care and support. ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL A very Happy New Year to you and what a busy December it has been for the school. Joshua Wallace (Head Boy) and Lucy Clare (Head Girl) enjoyed their experience accompanying the Head Teacher to the Houses of Parliament. The School Parliament visited the Senedd for First Minister’s questions, Years 7, 8 & 9 enjoyed their Winter Games and to get us in the Christmas spirit, the school community enjoyed its annual Christmas Concert - a wonderful and amazing performance from everyone involved. Congratulations and many thanks to all staff, parents and students for the wonderful fundraising for charities – some of our charities include: Food for Calais appeal; Support for Romania - over 300 parcels of sweets/chocolate collected and wrapped for children in Romania; £530 raised at our Macmillan Coffee morning; Over £500 raised for Velindre Cancer Centre; Over £500 raised for Air Ambulance Wales; Bridgend Foodbank; Cafod. HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM CORNELI PRIMARY The lead up to Christmas was very busy in school, featuring a Year 6 visit to the Liberty Stadium as part of a literacy project and a return visit by some Osprey players. Classes 1 and 2 went to Wiggley’s Farm, the Parent Council organised the making of terracotta Christmas tree decorations and there were superb Nursery and Jack and the Beanstalk concert performances. We also found time to learn from Welsh Water what we should and especially should not put down our drains! We had ‘all the fun of the Christmas Fayre’ with things to buy, games with prizes to be won and an opportunity to give our present orders to Santa himself! We give a big thank you to all who generously donated items to make this a most successful event. Thanks too for the support given for Children in Need Day as wearing odd shoes raised £215, to which was added a magnificent £250.55 raised by the budding entrepreneurs in Class 8. They were inspired by a visit with Class 9 to the art galleries at Cardiff Museum to sell their own artwork to parents at a special ‘gallery showing’, truly something to treasure. Sue Jones

WEST PARK WINTER NEWS Our last news of 2016 and what a busy term it’s been! Children In Need Day saw the Junior pupils demonstrating their amazing fundraising skills by designing stalls and games for the Infants and hosting a West Park Has Talent Show. We donated a massive £1,403 thanks to their efforts and the generosity of our parents, carers and staff. Our famous Christmas Concerts took place this term! At the Grand Pavilion the choir and instrumentalists entertained the audience with festive renditions of traditional and modern Christmas pieces. With three equally enjoyable concerts we raised the roof with our performances of Lights, Camel, Action (Year 1 and 2), A-Lad-In-Trouble (year 3 to 6) and Ye-Ha (year 3 to 6). At All Saint’s Church Reception and Nursery performed a fantastic nativity - A Miracle in Town! With a clip-clopping little grey donkey, kings, camels, shepherds, angels, Mary, Joseph and of course the miracle himself - Jesus! Thank you to Father Craig and All Saints Church for providing a beautiful venue. Every year we receive positive comments from delighted audience members who are dazzled by the children’s efforts and enthusiasm and this year was no exception. Congratulations to all involved. We couldn’t end 2016 without saying a special thank you to all those who help us throughout the year including all our parent volunteers and visitors. SCHOOLS AN EXCITING YEAR AHEAD FOR PORTHCAWL PRIMARY Firstly we would like to wish everyone associated with Porthcawl Primary School a happy new year! With a new year comes new challenges and experiences and we have many exciting events to look forward to. This term our Foundation Phase will be working on the topic of Growth. We will be looking at how and why different things grow and what we can do to ensure that everything grows to reach its full potential. We will also be going on an exciting trip to the National Botanic Gardens of Wales to see all that they do to help their huge variety of plants grow. In KS2 we will be studying all things Roman. By the end of next term our pupils will be experts on everything from Julius Caesar to the Colosseum. KS2 will be going on a trip back in time to Caerleon to visit the fascinating Roman ruins and baths. Finally we are looking forward to returning to the Sony Technology Centre to see the film we made last year. Our pupils wrote, directed, produced and filmed a short film and are excited to see the final cut at the launch event in January. Andrew Wood Head Teacher

AFON Y FELIN NEWS It’s been a very busy term, ending with two outstanding Christmas Concerts. Nursery, Reception and Year One children starred in ‘Christmas Counts’. It was wonderful, every child spoke independently, and the singing was out of this world! Years Two to Six’s production was Cinderella & Rockafella. It was extremely well acted, very funny and a lot of parents praising it later as brilliant. The teachers have excelled themselves once again. Afon y Felin has talent! Our school choir sang for the Cornelly Old Age Pensioners at their Luncheon Club, the audience really enjoyed the singing, remarking on their excellent behaviour as well. Our annual Christingle Festival was held in Mawdlam Church, with Rev. Duncan Walker officiating, it’s always a lovely service. Our Chair of Governors visited The Oaks, accompanied by his guitars. He told of his rock and roll days back in the sixties, the pupils were very interested and asked many questions, and everyone enjoyed. Congratulations to The PFA who held a Christmas Fayre. It was very well attended by parents and the community, with a profit of over £500 raised. Many thanks to all our pupils who attend all our events. We wish you a very Happy New Year! AJ Pritchard – Parent Governor

WISHING YOU A HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM CYNFFIG

The end of last term was busy, yet poignant with the majority of Cynffig pupils focusing on the needs of others. Our entire Year 10 group researched, wrote and presented on social issues in the local community. Six groups were identified as exceptional and competed in the inaugural ‘First Give’ South Wales final. All of our students were simply inspirational with the group representing LATCH Cymru winning £1000 for their charity. Groups representing Prostate Cymru and Calon DVS won the runner up prizes of £250. Congratulations to you all, you were fantastic! Pupils donned their best Christmas jumpers to support Trampface - a charity which focuses on the homeless. Lee West and Paul O’Dwyr of Trampface came to Cynffig to share their stories. Pupils were amazed at what they endured living on the streets of the UK and Calais to raise money and awareness for those without a home. Continuing our celebration of Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary, students enjoyed an exciting London experience by visiting the Tate Modern, Globe Theatre and Barbican to view Antony Sher in ‘King Lear’. Finally congratulations to Joseph Powell (Year 9) whose winning numeracy skills secured ‘Animal’ backpacks for all his Form! Hannah Castle Head Teacher

POEMS IN LIFE YOU’RE LIKE A SIGNALLER

AS A CHILD YOU OFTEN WONDER

In life you’re like a Signaller, Trying to get a clear path ahead, But sometimes issues arise, And diversions are required instead. We all would like to stay on greens, And sit comfortably as planned, But life doesn’t always flow like that, When things start to get out of hand. So often running on cautions, The route set ahead on yellow, Not knowing what’s around the corner, Unable to sit relaxed and mellow. In life you’re like a Signaller, So many reasons could be said, Unfortunately when it’s your time to leave, That signal will be on red. In life you’re like a Signaller, But sadly when it ends, We will all gather from all grades, As true railway colleagues and friends. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

As a child you often wonder, What life ahead will bring, But I will happily say, I wouldn’t change a thing. There have been many times, Full of laughter and tears, But one thing I learnt, Was it brought our loved ones nearer. We often lose a loved one, And we will sit down one day and cry, But we will have to go one day, We will all need to say goodbye. Through life you gain knowledge, Which you will hopefully pass on, So others can learn themselves, When you have also gone. As a child you often wonder, What life will be like when you’re older, All I can say from personal experience, It makes you much wiser and bolder. Written by David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

PAWS FOR THOUGHT

PAWS is committed to rescuing, sheltering and rehoming our canine friends. Walking on Porthcawl ‘s fronts and beaches you will see we love dogs whether owned or just a lend. PAWS Charity shop is as iconic as Dickens’ Old Curiosity Shop, items diverse as a Stradivarius violin to a One Direction rubbish bin. Valued volunteers scurry about like little terriers, sorting, preparing and presenting items for customers who shop to support our canine cause. Volunteers can often be seen looking for jigsaw puzzle pieces on the floor, even they are all on four paws. Meg, a dog who was rescued and rehomed to a loving owner, works three days a week with her owner at PAWS. Meg looks after the alfresco refreshments, filling water bowls, meeting and greeting new visitors and locals and thanking donators. Meg is a success story for this thoughtful, loving cause. Volunteers are committed, enthusiastic, polite and friendly, with backgrounds as diverse as the items there. There’s upstairs, downstairs with a small couch and basket for Meg under the stair. And yes, clothes can fall off hanger hooks and yes, Meg tells customers, “Please don’t dog ear the books” and yes, volunteers so busy that they can be seen quickly slurping a swift Glengettie and mistakenly nibbling Meg’s doggy chews! Well you’ll all know now, if this goes to press in our Seaside News. Porthcawl people are dog lovers, indicated by how many dog bowls are seen outside shops and stores and by the diverse variety of dogs who stroll with their owners along our sea shores. Meg, our resident volunteer canine, would like to say,”Thank you on behalf of PAWS for donations old or new”. Meg also stated, “Of course I forgive the volunteer who ate my doggy chew”! Alun Davies, Porthcawl

NEW YEAR – AGAIN How slowly did the pages turn In those days of long ago But now the years pass swiftly As we ask, where did they go? So let’s thank God for each new day Should it bring good or ill And know there’re lessons still to learn New joys our days to fill So let’s not fear this ‘growing old’ But thank God for yesteryear And know the One who gave us life Now tells us, never fear. News FINANCIALLY CAPABLE PEOPLE IN CARE I was saddened to read recently that Bridgend County Borough Council has been criticised for failing to properly monitor a looked-after child’s savings accounts while he was in their care. Rob Johnson, who was two when he was fostered, said some of his savings were wrongly used to pay for trips. An investigation by the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales found the council’s monitoring amounted to maladministration. Some three years ago, I attempted to introduce a law in the National Assembly that, among other things, would have placed responsibilities upon local authorities to ensure people in its care were financially capable. The law would have also made financial inclusion a core responsibility for councils, and – equally crucially – I had argued that financial education should be a compulsory part of the curriculum in schools in Wales. My proposals for financial education enjoyed overwhelming support from the Welsh public, with 97% of those consulted believing it would be a good idea. I believed it would skill up our workforce, and could have boosted our economy, with financially clued-up school leavers attracting new business to Wales. Sadly, the Welsh Government did not agree, and while I hope Rob’s case is the exception rather than the rule, I cannot see what systems and checks are in place to ensure that it won’t happen again. HARBOURSIDE NEWS A very Happy New Year to you all! A very exciting year for our development and indeed for Porthcawl. We have been asked about the kinds of facilities that will be available for older people in the Maritime Centre, so we would like to take this opportunity to tell readers a little more about this. The Maritime Centre will house a number of facilities specifically for older people, including an adult only lounge area. This will be a relaxing, members-only lounge and will include: complimentary newspapers, electronic e-readers and refreshments. The lounge will open up onto a large sun terrace with views across Porthcawl and the Channel. It will offer a relaxing, warm and friendly place for mature people to meet up. Our fantastic Health Suite will offer specific hydrotherapy and rehabilitation that will help with post-operative healing and ongoing conditions such as Arthritis, with private rooms offering treatments such as Physiotherapy, too. We have agreed that the facility will be utilised in partnership with the new Health Centre offering some NHS-funded services. Additionally, we will be looking to recruit our team of ‘Maritime Makers’ – mature volunteers who will assist throughout the centre. More information at www.porthcawl-harbourside.co.uk. Jayne Bowden

PORTHCAWL RNLI LAUNCH NEW WEBSITE Porthcawl RNLI lifeboat launch their new website with a special feature, ‘Live Streaming’. This allows web users the ability to watch the power of the waves crashing over the breakwater in safety and from the comfort of their home. The website, www.porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk is linked to a webcam, and allows users to click on ‘Live Streaming’ and view sea conditions at the breakwater live. Other key features include wind speed and direction, rainfall, temperature, tide times and height, together with the latest ‘shouts’, events etc. “Our new website and webcam came about following a generous donation from Porthcawl Christmas Morning Swim”, said Lifeboat Operations Manager Phil Missen MBE. Phil Missen continued: “We decided we would provide valuable up-to-date information that could make our coastline safer for those who use the sea, beaches and coastal walks also show some spectacular views, especially during stormy weather. Our breakwater has become a visual attraction during storms, especially with professional and amateur photographers. Waves higher than our lighthouse have become familiar scenes in the media and on regional and national television. We have already received positive feedback from around the UK as it is now possible to watch the waves crashing skywards safely.” Ian Stroud Lifeboat Press Officer, Porthcawl

LOTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2017 A Happy New Year to all readers! 2017 is already shaping up to feature a number of memorable events, and we have an exciting year ahead of us. I’m looking forward to finding out which new businesses will be opening at the revamped Jennings Building, and in seeing the plans progress for the community-driven new Maritime Centre. You will be voting for who you want to represent you on Bridgend County Borough Council in May, so make sure that you are registered and able to have your say. In late May / early June, the Urdd Eisteddfod is expected to attract 100,000 people into the County Borough and will benefit the local economy to the tune of more than £6m. This will be followed by the Seniors Open Championship, which will return to the Royal Porthcawl in July. It was a resounding success when it was previously held in the town, and I am sure that it will be even bigger in 2017. We will also be developing our plans for a Watersports Centre at Rest Bay – and on that note, congratulations to Porthcawl Surf School for winning ‘Best Surf School In Britain’ at the UK Pro Surf Tour Awards 2016. News CLOSING THE AUTISM EMPLOYMENT GAP A national programme needs to be brought in to raise employers’ awareness of the skills and great, yet underused, potential of autistic people. It is vital that awareness, understanding and acceptance of autism becomes more prevalent. I am backing the campaign by the National Autistic Society to ensure autistic people can access specialist support to help them find and stay in work. The Government has pledged to halve the gap between disabled people’s employment levels and the rest of the populations’ by increasing the disability employment rate from 47% to 64%. Yet, the National Autistic Society’s latest research shows that the autism employment gap is even wider, with only 32% in some form of work. The Government’s pledge must not be empty rhetoric, they need to ensure that autistic people benefit from it and are not left even further behind. In February I will be hosting an Employers Awareness day with the Department for Work and Pensions to raise understanding of the benefit of employing people with a range of disabilities. One of the speakers that I have invited to the event is a national employer who will outline the success for his company of employing people with autism. 2017 will bring many, one of the changes I will be looking at is employment for people with disabilities. HELP IS AT HAND FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE We recently marked our ongoing support for the White Ribbon Campaign in the County Borough. This important initiative seeks to highlight and tackle domestic abuse, and it was quite shocking to see some of the statistics. Since it opened in October 2015, the Assia Suite at the Civic Offices in Angel Street, Bridgend has provided confidential advice and support to nearly 500 local residents on issues that include physical, psychological, sexual, emotional and financial abuse, safety planning for victims and their children, and much more. Home to the Domestic Abuse Support and Information Service, the Assia Suite was named in honour of Pencoed resident Assia Newton who was tragically murdered following decades of domestic abuse. It was set up by the council, South Wales Police, Calan DVS, the Probation Service and Victim Support to offer a one-stop-shop where people can access all the support they need, or get advice on behalf of a friend or family member. Domestic abuse is abhorrent and completely unacceptable. Help is at hand for anyone who needs it, so there is no need to suffer in silence - just ask for the Assia Suite at the Civic Offices, call 01656 815919 or email assia@calandvs.org.uk

REWARD OUR LOCAL HEROES Do you know someone who would be a worthy winner of a Mayor’s Citizenship Award? It’s our version of the New Year’s Honours, and the Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor Reg Jenkins, is inviting local residents to put forward the names of the special individuals, groups or businesses that deserve recognition. It could be a volunteer who has regularly gone the extra mile for others over many years, somebody you know who is an exceptional charity fundraiser, someone who put the local area on the map by achieving something extraordinary during 2016, or a community group that is working wonders. The awards are open to people of all ages who live in the County Borough, as well as local groups and businesses based locally. We want to uncover the stories of those unsung heroes who are making a positive impact, reward fine examples of citizenship and community spirit, and give them all the appreciation they deserve. Please visit the Mayor’s page at www.bridgend.gov.uk to download a nomination form. The deadline for nominations is Friday 27th January 2017, and the award winners will be honoured at an event hosted by the Mayor at the Civic Offices in Bridgend in March. HAS YOUR BUSINESS BEEN HIT BY STEEP BUSINESS RATE INCREASES? I am urging businesses in the Porthcawl area to contact me if they are being hit by steep increases in business rates. Many traders have suffered a double whammy; their rateable values have risen as a result of the recent independent business rates revaluation while, at the same time, Welsh government has reneged on their manifesto pledge to cut business rates for small businesses. A more effective system of raising tax is needed longer term because so many businesses are disproportionately affected by the revaluation. First Minister Carwyn Jones should use his powers to help those who could go under by improving business rate relief. I’d like your evidence to help me make the case to Welsh Government. There are signs that they may move on this but I need case studies to help me push them over the line. Welsh Conservatives want business rates abolished for firms with an RV of less than £12K. Anyone who has been adversely affected should contact me at Suzy.davies@assembly.wales

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hi all, the Through Christian Eyes team want to wish you a wonderful new year. We pray that 2017 will be filled with blessing, meaning and strength. Think about this simple but profound truth about Christmas, at the start of the new year. When Jesus came to the world he came as, what Paul calls, “the last Adam” (1 Corinthians 15 v 45). The idea of this is that the first man that God ever created, who was Adam of course, broke relation with God and went his own way. By doing this, because he was mankinds representative, he took the human race away from God and into a whole lot of trouble. In other words, “he blew it”. When Jesus came, he came as the second Adam and as another of mankinds representatives. His purpose was to establish a relationship with God for humanity that the first man ruined. Jesus actually starts a kind of new human race experience. One that is once again under God’s rule and in relationship with him. “The rewards are out of this world”, as they say. And the good news is that all are welcome. God bless. Neil Harvey 07988 478845

FEATURES ORION One of the most recognisable constellations in the night sky is Orion the hunter. It’s distinguishable its stars are conspicuous, and that includes the bright red star Betelgeuse in the top left corner. The star is so big that it could contain the Earth’s orbit with room to spare. Most of the stars in Orion are farther away than the majority of stars we can see. But Betelgeuse is actually one of the closest of Orion’s stars at a distance of ‘merely’ 470 light years. The bright blue star at the bottom right corner is twice as far away and has a radius of around 100 times that of the sun. Perhaps the best-known stars of Orion are the three which form the belt and they are called from left to right: Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. All three stars are at stupendous distances from us with the middle star Alnilam being 1,340 light years away. Follow the belt upwards to find the red supergiant Aldebaran in Taurus, a near neighbour just 65 light years distant or follow it downwards to the brightest star in the sky, Sirius just 8 light years from us. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SKER WI – CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE The sound of jingle bells came earlier than usual, when President Nora Williams welcomed 39 members to the November meeting. However, these jingle bells had nothing to do with Santa! Attached to your purse, they could act as a deterrent to pickpockets during the Christmas shopping rush! This was one of the crime prevention strategies suggested by guest speakers, Sergeant Jason Jenkins and PC Alison Watson. Although local crime rates remain very low and older people are less likely to be attacked or robbed than people in any other age group, Sergeant Jenkins reminded us that opportunist thieves, bogus callers and rogue traders can prey on the unwary at any time. The officers also advised: * Keeping doors and windows locked, even when we are at home. * Always checking the identity of callers – never allowing them in unless their identity has been confirmed! * Keeping purses etc in closed handbags. * Never leaving valuables unattended in public places. For a free Crime Prevention Survey, contact Sergeant Jenkins (07584004254) or PC Watson (0758477094) We meet at 7pm, the 2nd Thursday of the month, St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. Visitors always welcome! Christine Beynon

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI By the time you are reading this Christmas and New Year will be over. We at Mynydd Cynffig hope all went well with you. We would have had our Christmas Party and if past years are anything to go by - it would have been enjoyed by all. The last year seems to have gone in a flash. We have several new members and we are all looking forward to what 2017 will bring, trips to arrange outings to plan and many different events organised by the Glamorgan Federation of WI, which we can take part in. We have a craft club, scrabble club and (weather permitting) a walking club. So if you’re fed up, and would like to meet new faces after all the hussle and bustle of Christmas and New Year, call in to see us! We are in the Talbot Centre, Kenfig Hill on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 2.30-4.30pm. Tea and biscuits provided and we promise no mince pies! Christine Callaghan

LALESTON WI Our December meeting was taken by President Dawn Storie, who welcomed everyone to our Christmas party evening - with a fantastic turnout considering the awful weather that night. We all enjoyed the sumptuous buffet, provided by the members, along with a glass of wine. Katherine Nelson won the raffle, while joint quiz winners were Elaine Jones and Jane Lewis. Competition winners were Tina Coleman, Deborah Jones and Naomi Williams. A huge ‘thank you’ to all committee members, for all their hard work ensuring the party was a success and for all their endeavours throughout the year. All members agreed that our Christmas lunch at The Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl had been another successful outing. Everyone was so pleased that Margaret Aylen was able to join us. The Luncheon Club will be on 10th January and the Book Club, at Bridgend Library, will take place on 19th January. Our next meeting will be held on 5th January, 7.15pm in Blandy Hall (Laleston Gardening Club). We will be holding a Beetle Drive and the competition will be an ‘insect item’. New members are always welcome, why not come and join us. For further information call Diane on 01656 656600. Dawn Storie

NEWTON WI Our ‘Carol Service’ was held on 7th December, it was well attended and officiated by the Rev. Colin Richards - a lovely service with carols and readings. Thanks to our very talented ‘Craft Ladies’, the Christmas trees at All Saints and Margam Orangery looked splendid. Eight members attended the WI Christmas Festival Concert held in Neath - very entertaining. A group of our ladies were invited to ‘Leeke’s Store’ for the day that started with coffee, followed by an interesting talk on the history of the Family Business, a competition, lunch and a further talk on ‘Home Design’. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day. We would like to wish all our members a happy new year. M Freeman

OPTIONS FOR DIVORCE Choosing to get divorced is a huge decision to make. Dealing with the breakdown of a relationship is difficult enough before you consider the legal minefield many go through to find out what their choices are. Factor in escalating legal costs and the process can be overwhelming. Once you have made the decision to get divorced, one of the biggest questions is which approach to use in moving forward with the arrangements. There are a range of options available, including collaborative law, mediation, negotiation, going through the courts or using arbitration. If you are a parent considering separation, your main concern is likely to be how to minimise the impact on your children and sort out arrangements for them in the best way possible. Questions such as where the children will live, how much time you and your spouse will be able to spend with them and, if you don’t agree about arrangements, what view the court is likely to take are usually some of the most stressful to consider. Sorting out financial arrangements when divorcing can be daunting. Sometimes couples can agree a fair split between themselves, but the more complex your situation the more likely you are to need professional advice. There is actually only one “ground” for divorce: that the marriage has completely broken down and any reconciliation is impossible. However, in an undefended divorce this will have to be proven to the court by giving written evidence and the person starting the divorce process (the petitioner) will need to establish one or more of five facts, namely adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, or two or five years’ separation, depending upon whether the Respondent consents to the divorce going ahead. If you require advice regarding separation or divorce, please contact us at Melanie Lazarus and Co. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

In April 2015, legislation was introduced which changed how pensions could be drawn at retirement. These changes have encouraged more people to look at using an Income Drawdown plan to keep their pension invested and to take the income they need directly from the pension pot. A suitable Income Drawdown plan could keep the saver’s pension pot intact right up to the time of their death; at which point it can be passed onto beneficiaries. However, despite the positives of drawing a pension in this manner, there is as we see it a risk which should be managed carefully. If a retiree decides to keep their pension pot invested and to draw their income from the pot, there is a growing risk of the retiree becoming physically incapable and/ or losing their mental capacity – whilst their pension is still invested, producing income and requires “managing”. Even a spouse can struggle to properly control these matters. It can be complicated, timely and could result in court intervention at a high cost. Fortunately the simple step we would advise you to take is to prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). This is a legal document which provides for one or more people to make decisions on the individual’s behalf. It comes into effect should the individual become incapacitated and unable to manage their own affairs, at some point in the future. LPS’s are not only utilised in respect of Pension Drawdown, but in all aspects of financial management such as paying utility bills, writing cheques and/or selling property. Directors of companies or sole traders should also consider the benefits of business LPA’s. Any LPA introduced should be professionally written, by a specialist, because it is a document which may need to cover many different situations and used in different ways under different circumstances. The wording of the LPA should be precise to cover the exact powers you wish to give to your attorneys. In summary, the new pension rules open many fresh opportunities for those coming up to retirement and looking to draw on their pensions, financial advice should be taken to explore all your options. An LPA (properly written) will protect against issues should this ill health cause the individual to lose their ability to manage their own affairs.

Finance 2016 - WHAT A YEAR FOR MORTGAGES! As we start another year, it’s clear that 2016 was a momentous year in the mortgage business, both in terms of interest rates becoming the lowest in history and lending criteria becoming more stringent. There need be no problem getting a mortgage as long as you tick the ever increasing number of boxes that lenders and the FCA Regulator require. Lenders are keen to assist but have to work to the guidelines and each lender’s interpretation of the affordability rules differs – this is why you can be confused at being turned down with some lenders, for what can be no obvious reason. This is where it is VITAL that you consult a fully experienced broker who can survey the market, especially with new lenders. Now, despite the number of lenders and available schemes having increased, here’s a word of caution. Rates with some lenders have already bottomed out and are increasing again – so, if you have a rate that is coming to an end in the next three months or you simply haven’t even looked at your mortgage for some time, NOW is the time to act. Get yourself a new rate booked. This can be kept on ice for you for a while, typically three months, so that as one rate ends, the other can take over. According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders, tens of thousands of variable rate mortgages could be benefit from often substantially cheaper rates, and at fixed rates. Call us and we’ll arrange for an Adviser to look at the market and all your options. This is particularly important for those of you with Interest-Only mortgages, very often in retirement. LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

What’s to do in the garden in January? Well I’m told there are the usual basic chores. Check that plants are protected, and made secure against the cold windy weather that is prevalent during the next few months. Browse the seed catalogues and plan your baskets and containers so they are ready when spring comes again. Days may be short and dreary light levels low but outside, the garden is far from lacking in interest. Bulbs are already pushing through, and the early crocus, snowdrops, mini daffodils will soon be showing. On January 9th our lecture programme restarts. Joyce and Richard Pegg will talk about ;Preparing a Garden for The National Gardens Scheme’. It starts at 7.30pm at Cliff Cottage and visitors are gladly welcome. The celebrations are over so back to normal, remember to put the tree out for collection or strip it down for shredding. Talking to plants to help them grow is a well known ‘old wives tale’, but studies have shown vibration like music or perhaps the sound of your voice can affect plant growth. Just check no one is about when you try it! Happy New Year everyone! Gwen Bradford

January is a fairly quiet month in the garden apart from battling to keep it looking good (just as well really after all that Christmas pud and chocolate!) Once you’ve recovered a bit you might like to sow some sweet peas, these like a good root run, so plant them in the cardboard centres of toilet of kitchen rolls, place side by side in a seed tray and fill with compost, I always soak my peas overnight to soften the seed coat. Sweet peas don’t need very high temperatures to germinate, a light cool room is sufficient, such lovely obliging plants, easy to grow, colourful with a delicious smell! It’s time to look out for early seed potatoes to get them chitted before planting out in March; you can do this sitting down in the warm! Also the beautiful butterfly bush, Buddleia, is due its annual hard prune. Don’t forget to feed our feathered friends; they’ll repay you by eating bugs all summer! If you were lucky enough to get an Amaryllis for Christmas, did you know - the name Amaryllis is the Greek word for ‘sparkle’, which is exactly what I hope 2017 does for you! Chris Early

Health FOOD COMBINING

BUDDHIST HEART

Weight loss can respond well to food combining, as can digestive problems and other health issues. There have been various books produced on the subject and I have taken these basic details from The Complete Book Of Food Combining by Kathryn Marsden. These are the three simple rules: 1. Buy organic and non GM products wherever possible. 2. Eat fruit separately before meals. 3. Don’t mix major proteins and starches. Major proteins: meat, fish, cheese, eggs, shellfish, Quorn, soya, Tofu. Major starches: Bread, rice, pasta, flour, pastry, potatoes, muesli, oats. Although simple and straight forward it can seem difficult to put into practise as you have to avoid things like cheese sandwiches, beef burgers in bread, and fish & chips! As Kathryn says, cheating now and again is OK as long as generally you keep to the principals. The book contains a vast array of information on diet and nutrition and is well worth getting. Glyn Hardwicke

Last month I gave a description of the principles of doctrine. Buddhism will, if practiced diligently lead to dispassion, contentment etc. But, how do we allow the mind to flow into the principles described? Many will say, you can learn the “how” by practicing meditation. The full Buddhist doctrine of meditation, the Satipatthana Sutta, involves aspects that will lead to this eventual unbinding. Do you remember learning your times tables at school? With practice step by step they became automatic. The doctrine of teachings are stunningly formulaic and they always lead to the way out of human suffering. That is suffering in your mind. This formula is known as the Eightfold Noble Path and can be applied at any time and in any situation. The road map that I am talking about can be accessed by researching the Sammaditthi Sutta. To access such material please visit www.accesstoinsight.org Have a look, carefully contemplate, investigate at any moment and apply. See what happens. What do you notice? Neville Evans

Arts A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Happy New Year to everyone, and as far as Downwood Film Productions is concerned, let’s make 2017 a year with a difference. For some time, I have been keen to put a certain short film into production, and this month I am going to invite those of you who might be interested to join my Downwood Production Group, which already informally contains a number of local actors who appeared in Ghosts of Glamorgan. Films are always collaborative affairs, and not only require production budgets but also people who specialise in certain things apart from acting, such as makeup, wardrobe, set design, as well as general production helpers. All right, on a voluntary basis, let’s see if we can pull together sufficient interest to make this film happen. Lots of things will need to be begged and borrowed, or drawn from my own resources, such as camera and editing facilities, but there are several ways local people can assist, if only by lending houses or empty office space for filming. To find out if you can help in some way, give me a call or text. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 01656 771775 or 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir behind the camera

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR GALA CONCERT It was a huge privilege to listen to Bridgend Male Choir’s concert at the Sony Theatre, Bridgend. What a marvellous venue - a sorely needed cultural resource in a town which, apart from this, has a lack of theatre facilities. Congratulations to Musical Director Ryan Wood for his energy and for his choice of programme with music from the very broad spectrum of the Choir’s repertoire. The atmosphere created by the wordless introduction was truly magical. Highlights included a heartfelt ‘Yfory’; ‘Tell My Father’, with an extract from the Gettysberg Address delivered by Dr Peter Morgan, which was both poignant and emotive; and ‘Bui Doi’ with Mr Paul Carter delivering his solo with sincerity. Accompanist Stephanie Bailey, supported by Scott Williams, added significantly to the production. The second half saw Mike Doyle in a spirit raising performance. Never lewd or offensive, he showed himself to be an incredibly adept student of Welsh and English dialects. He spoke from the heart about his upbringing and his subsequent rise to fame. A clever and enthralling performance was an excellent close to a wonderful evening. Martin Cadogan Media Officer, Bridgend Male Choir Email: gadlys@gmail.com Seaside News | 42

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK AT PLANET ROCKSTOCK I hope you all had a good Christmas. Mine started early with a visit to the Planet Rockstock Festival that took place over three days at Trecco Bay. The bill included The Dead Daisies, Motorhead’s Phil Campbell and Black Stone Cherry. However, I was there to catch British Lion - which is the side project of Steve Harris, bassist with rock giants Iron Maiden. They weren’t as heavy as Maiden but they’ve got some anthems in their set and it was good to see Steve running around enjoying himself. I was also lucky to have a chat with him after the show, as well as having a pint with TV’s Hairy Bikers. Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash was brilliant as always, and Black Stone Cherry, which I missed on the Sunday, was awesome, according to my sidekick Murf. I must say a big thank you to Planet Rock’s Jon, a top bloke, for the passes, and congratulations to presenter Wyatt Wendels who cycled 1,100 miles to the event and raised over £70,000 for the charity CALM (The Campaign Against Living Miserably). What an effort! There were over thirty bands, and the third time it’s been in Porthcawl. A big thanks to my minders as usual for keeping an eye on me over the recent holiday! ART IN FOCUS Happy New Year to you all. This month I’m focusing on an artist who is undoubtedly Britain’s greatest of the nineteenth century. He became the biggest influence on artists thereafter, by creating the most atmospheric, abstract, modern works of art. This artist is the great JMW Turner (Joseph Mallard William 1875-1851). At the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff there are some magnificent examples of his watercolours and later oil works, when some believed he had lost his mind. On show at the moment are ‘The Storm’ and ‘The Morning after the Storm’, both painted in 1840-45, after the great storm of 1840. These are the works that were painted when Turner was having an affair with Sophia Booth and is one of the reasons why, when they were bequeathed to the museum by Gwendoline Davies in 1956, they were considered fakes and had to remain in the vaults until recently. The BBC programme ‘Fake or Fortune’ investigated these two amongst others on display, including ‘The Beacon Light’. Without revealing too much, these paintings were found to be the genuine article and are definitely worth a visit to see. Arts ALL ABOARD THE HMS PINAFORE

Once again the Mid Glamorgan Savoyards did themselves proud with their production of ‘HMS Pinafore’ at the Grand Pavilion. A strong chorus, excellent soloists and a full orchestra led by Caroline Green provided the audience with a sea salty tale of love and class - typical Gilbert and Sullivan. The daughter of the Captain falls in love with an Able Seaman. The Captain is in love with a lowly lady. The Admiral of the Fleet, who has never trodden the boards of a boat, tells us that “Love is a platform on which all ranks meet” - except for himself of course. A twist at the end reverses everyone’s stations and allows the lovers to marry their chosen one. Soloists and cameo parts showcased their marvellous voices and acting skills. This was their 22nd charity event and they are a truly ship shape crew under the musical direction of Roger Hudd and stage director Andrew Griffiths. An accumulated total of £60,000 has been raised for local charities. This year the beneficiaries are The Save the Children Fund, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Kidney Research Unit Wales. An amazing achievement. Dominique Spearey

A FRIGHTFUL EVENING This was the title of the annual Murder Mystery play put on by a group of thespians from the church of Our Lady Star of The Sea, Porthcawl, but it certainly wasn’t a frightful night for the appreciative audience! They were entertained and challenged in equal measure as the six actors, old hands at melodrama, acted out the events leading up to the mysterious death of a well known and wealthy writer. It was a classic tale of a number of people all benefitting from the writer’s will - but who did it? And how? A splendid buffet, put on by the Church Ladies’

Guild, helped the audience work out the details. To add to the intellectual challenge, each table had a ‘criminal quiz’ to work on. Shirley Watkins, the play’s producer and murder victim (taking a long, dramatic time to die, of course thanked everyone who made the evening so frightfully successful. Chairperson of the Ladies’ Guild, Brigitte Gough, congratulated the actors on providing everyone with such pleasure on a cold winter’s night. Proceeds from ticket sales and raffle came to £423, which go towards church funds. Dominique Spearey

PENCOED PUPIL COMPETES IN THE WELSH NATIONAL SCHOOL TRAMPOLINE COMPETITION

TAI CHI NEWS

Erin Scurrah, year 9 pupil at Pencoed Comprehensive School, has taken part in the Welsh National Schools Competition for the under 14 age group. Erin came a superb 4th in her section, which placed her 11th out of 80 in Wales. The competition required competitors to do two routines, and the second routine can have a more complex ending than the first. Erin has always been excellent at preparation and her goal was to do two clean routines. Erin came 11th in the completion, which is a testimony to her hard work and perseverance. Anthea Powis School Manager

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS

I brought Sun Style Tai Chi to Porthcawl and Wales in 1997. In the year 2000 I set up the Swimming Dragon School on a non-profit basis offering high value, low cost Tai Chi. The School has always taken seriously their duty of care to their students with insurance being provided for both instructors and pupils, and instructors maintaining a current first aid qualification. The Honorary Principal of our School is the Famous Sun Style master Mr Per Nyfelt of Sweden who is visiting us in Porthcawl next year. Being non-profit we have always given good value to our members. Now we take it one step further by offering FREE Tai Chi at our Friday class 11.15am at Awel y Mor. Beginners most welcome. Standing or sitting Tai Chi, wheelchair friendly. Contact John on 784991

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB The new year often brings resolutions to become more healthy and active, and many people opt to do this by taking up running or walking, especially as the nights get lighter. However, there’s still a need to stay safe. Latest figures show, of the 381 people who unnecessarily lost their life to drowning in the UK – 126 were runners or walkers. This represents a third of all victims. The Top 5 Water Safety Tips near open water 1. Be aware of your surroundings and take notice of any warning signs when out and about. 2. When running or walking next to open water, stay well clear of bank edges. They are often unstable and this can create slips, trips and falls. 3. Try to always walk or run with a friend. 4. Always let someone know where you’re going – take your mobile phone 5. Learn swimming and lifesaving skills. We can help with number 5! We are always looking for new members from the age of 7 upwards, and also offer family membership deals. So why not combine getting fit with learning new skills and try us out? For more details contact secplgc@ hotmail.com, or go to www.porthcawlifeguards.co.uk Phil Protheroe

Porthcawl Runners are looking to kick off 2017, by boosting locals fitness, and helping those getting back to fitness, or trying running for the first time - offering a ‘pay a one-off fee couch to 5k supervised training plan’. This starts on 16th January for 9 weeks - training 3 times a week for 7 weeks. Cost is £27. Contact: c25k@porthcawlrunners.com. All adults welcome. We are looking to build on the successful year we have had in 2016, with the Club performing well in team events like the Rack Raids, West Glam Cross Country League and Bridgend Summer League. The club held its first event in October 2016 as the last event in the Summer League - a friendly, 4k per led, three stage relay along Porthcawl Seafront for members of the Bridgend League Clubs - Cornelly Striders, Bridgend Athletic, Cwm Ogwr, Brackla Harriers and Pencoed Triathlon (the other teams in the league also held events throughout the summer). Porthcawl Parkrun remains a weekly focus for us, and we regularly have around ten or more running together, supporting each other and going for coffee together afterwards. Training has a real buzz on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.30pm with lots of new coaches and members keen to try new sessions together. Find out more at porthcawlrunners.com, or come down and meet us at training from Porthcawl Rugby Club. Will Edwards Assistant Coach, Porthcawl Runners

Sport TAP IT OUT CC Hi all, and a late big Merry Christmas & happy new year. December is a difficult month with the distraction of the festive period and the typical poor weather, however the club members have all managed to get out and we have been lucky enough to have some fantastic weather. With the New Year coming lots of us are making those resolutions and promises to get fitter and lose those extra pounds, so what better way is there, than joining your local cycling club and pedal your way around the fantastic vale of Glamorgan, Neath valley or the Gower with some very friendly people and pull your waist line in as a result. Membership is £20. Club rides throughout the winter are on Saturday and shift workers rides are held most days during the week. Coffee and biscuits are provided at the TAP in Pyle at no cost to you. However the greatest thing the club can offer is a chance to make lots of new friends, ride with likeminded cyclists and a chance to achieve your goals for the New Year. Nicky Morgan

A BIG THANK YOU FROM REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB Rest Bay Lifeguard Club would like to thank Mr Clive Hopkins of Blancos Hotel, The Towers and Bar Gallois for his kind generosity and personal donation to the club.

SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT Dec 10th – a dreary, dull, grey day but best surf for ages. Isn’t it all too often the same? We all love the blue sky, sunny day swells that we get. Some in winter some in summer. It’s always 2ft. We all crave for bigger head high waves here at Ogmore by Sea and Southerndown Bay… and when you look at the surf forecasts, the size of the waves always marries with poorer weather. When the swells are bigger the wind turns around to onshore. The bigger the swell - the duller grey the sky. When the Low has passed us and the skies open up, the surf has stopped. It will never change. So early to mid December we have finally had some surf after a few weeks of nonthing. We had 4-5ft at Southerndown Bay on Saturday 10th, raining foggy and grey. Roll on spring, bring on the daffodils. The surf video I made of the Channel Coast Championship is linked on the Llantwit Tuskasurf.co.uk page if anyone wants to see it. If you want a similar film made of your surf let me know. David Batten david@tuskasurf.co.uk
