PORTHCAWL REGENERATION
A VIEW FOR THE FUTURE PORTHCAWL
Dear Editor, I attended the exhibition of plans for Porthcawl’s future at the pavilion last week. Obviously the architects have been commissioned to design a housing estate not a premier seaside resort. The parking in the summer months is totally inadequate at present, and by the look of the plans we are loosing salt lake car park completely and it is to be replaced with a two-storey car park at Hillsboro. This idea is total madness. We need at least 70% of salt lake car park saved for residents and visitors to enjoy our seafront. Unless you can walk, cycle or bus to the seafront then it’s going to be a no go area. I like hundreds of other residents and visitors to Porthcawl are disabled and are unable to use buses. How do you suggest we get to the seafront? Is BCBC going to hire special disability buses with hydraulic lifts to transport the disabled from a park and ride to the beach? And what when the rain comes down, are the council going to provide a large covered area on the seafront for all the disabled to queue to be transported back to the park and ride? We want salt lake kept for parking and leisure alone. Why don’t the planners visit Aberavon seafront and try and understand what regeneration means? There is enough land to build over six hundred houses and a school at sandy bay. The BCBC could use the mega-millions they could sell that area for and spend the money on making Salt Lake and Coney Beach a premier seaside resort, with gardens, water park, children’s play areas, picnic areas, crazy golf, skateboard park, outdoor shower facilities etc. Surely there isn’t a councillor in Porthcawl that is happy with the urbanisation of our beautiful seafront. This should be a cross party fight. We are paying high community charges to live in a seaside resort and if the BCBC have their way will be unable to visit our seafront unless we walk, cycle or use buses. So very sad. Dear Editor, Well December was busy! AVFTFP took to the streets and delivered 5000 letters to local residents prompting them to question the CPO’s (application by BCBC) and urge the council to retain more land for the public’s recreational use. Hopefully you received a copy and stated your objections! We hope to hear an update on this within the first quarter of the New Year. Then of course there was the eagerly awaited place-making presentation from BCBC’S regeneration team in the Pavilion. There certainly seemed to be a good turn out. The plans, in our view, were worrying and not at all sympathetic to our beautiful coastal town. Again, we eagerly await further communications from BCBC following the feedback from Porthcawl residents. Finally, the Dragon’s Den event. So many amazing ideas that would really bring life and vibrancy to our seaside town. The planned regeneration has been elevated to The Future Generations Commissioner. We should be able to give you an update on this in the New Year. So for now… a waiting game. BOOK OF THE MONTH Mark Clattenburg – Whistle Blower Born in County Durham in 1975, Mark Clattenburg is one of the most highly-rated and recognisable football referees of modern times. He started officiating in the Premier League in 2004 and over the course of the next thirteen seasons, he took charge of nearly 300 games in the top flight. HEALTH COST OF CANCER NEWS Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a fab Christmas too. We managed to raise a whopping £872 from our Light for A Life service. Thank you to everyone who came and supported it meant a lot to us that you showed your support. Thank you also to Jeff, Dave and all at the Hi-Tide. Thank you also to Fr Philip Masson for his beautiful and inspiring words, and last but by no means least thank you to all the volunteers who helped on the night. ARE YOU THINKING WHAT I’M THINKING? How many of the 70,000 a day thoughts did you catch? One or two, maybe, then as normal service resumes the mind continues to keeping you alive, noticing hunger, thirst, boredom, excitement, hot, cold, driving, sleeping, waking… You may realise that every other person you meet also has 70,000 thoughts going on in their mind as well, no wonder it is so difficult to function some days! We all deserve more credit for getting up in the morning and making it to bedtime in one piece. It is no surprise to learn that this may be the reason why people we know get on our nerves sometimes or with certain family or friends, all the time. You may ask yourself ‘Why did they do that? Well now you know why, we each have our own 70,000 thoughts, so the person who has upset you is not thinking exactly the same as you. It is not personal. Maybe the next time someone upsets you remember they can’t read your mind or calculate your needs, so either explain what you want or if they choose to ignore you; say ‘You may be right’. TOUGHER PENALTIES FOR FLY-TIPPING
I hope you were able to take part in the recent placemaking consultation and to consider some of the ambitious proposals that Bridgend County Borough Council wants to explore. An all-new luxury spa waterfront hotel was one of several potential opportunities showcased during the consultation – other highlights included modern multi-storey car parking at Hillsboro Place, new landscaping and pedestrianisation along the Eastern Promenade, improved public transport infrastructure and a Metro link, the extension and refurbishment of Dock Street, the creation of new plazas and fresh community spaces, and much more. A new luxury spa hotel would support ambitions to provide additional leisure facilities within the town as well as previously identified needs for more high-quality accommodation within Porthcawl, which in turn would help to attract further largescale events in addition to the likes of the Elvis Festival and Seniors Open golf tournament. Elsewhere, the coastal defence work is making great progress. With the walls of the Eastern Promenade being rebuilt, works to the main rock revetment on the seaward side of the Western Breakwater continuing and replacement block stone strengthening slipway areas around Rhych Point and the nearby dunes, I’m looking forward to seeing what new progress 2022 will bring.
Tougher penalties have been introduced for fly-tippers and anyone who dumps rubbish illegally in Bridgend County Borough. From now on, anyone who disposes of waste or who abandons a motor vehicle on land maintained by the council will be issued with a fine of £400. If prosecuted, fly-tippers also risk being fined up to £50,000 and receiving a prison term which can be as much as five years if the dumped waste is hazardous. The changes have been agreed after the Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council updated its policy on the issuing of Fixed Penalty Notices. As well as being designed to deter fly-tippers, the new policy can be applied in cases where individuals create problems for other residents by storing multiple vehicles on the public highway for the purpose of selling them. The changes, which also cover the storage and disposal of commercial waste, follow the recent launch of a new enforcement team for the county borough, and the establishment of several community litter hubs to support volunteers who give up their time to help keep the area clean. If you spot fly-tipped waste dumped on council-maintained land, report it to cleanupthecounty@bridgend.gov.uk so that it can be fully investigated.

These last few years have been so hard with COVID. Having access to parks and greenery has given some much needed respite – whether to go for a short walk, to sit and enjoy nature, or to play for our younger residents. Open green spaces are so important for our children especially, and that’s why I’m always so keen to hear ideas from young people themselves for the future. At my recent Porthcawl Regen Dragon’s Den event I got children to submit ideas for what they would want to see in local parks – with Hazel at West Park Primary winning the contest. If your New Year resolutions include getting out and about for some physical exercise, Bridgend County Borough continues to offer stunning parks and areas of natural beauty for you to enjoy. And as part of the Nature Keeper Project, there’s even more to look out for with oak sculptures and accompanying poetry to tell their stories. Five of the sculptures are located at Bryngarw Park, and a further 10 can be found in beauty spots such as Wilderness Lakes, Tremains Wood Local Nature Reserve and Parc Calon Lan. The county borough also features wildlife havens in places you might not expect – such as Frog Pond Wood, a local nature reserve which backs onto Village Farm Industrial Estate. Perfect for short walks, it offers a mixed woodland of oak and ash, wetland areas and more. If you want to venture further out, there are footpaths around Aber Fields in the Ogmore Valley overseen by ‘The Keeper of the Fields’, while Bedford Park in Cefn Cribwr has about 18 hectares of green space and the ruins of an 18th century ironworks to discover. DENTAL DISASTER LOOMS THE lockdowns caused by the Covid pandemic have had many unforeseen consequences including the decimation of dental services in Wales. Prior to Covid, Welsh dentists delivered just over 2.3 million courses of treatment each year. But in 2020/21, that figure fell to 544,755 – a drop of more than three quarters. Dental services were suspended almost totally for months, apart from some emergency work, and things are not yet back to normal. The spray generated by some treatments means that surgeries have to be left for an hour in between patients for any spray to settle and then the room has to be deep cleaned. This has massively reduced the number of patients who can be seen. The situation with children is even worse. Fewer than 3500 examinations were done in the past year – a drop of 99 per cent over previous years. The long-term repercussions for the dental health of children and young people are horrific. Dentists fear that they may never catch up with the backlog of cases. I urge Welsh Government to allocate more than the £3 million already earmarked for the recovery of dental services as we will need to train and recruit more dentists in Wales. COALITION OF CHAOS? A shocking 1-in-5 people in Wales are on an NHS waiting list. People are waiting hours on end in A&E. Ambulances are queuing outside hospitals. Our health service is at breaking point. Staff are working around the clock under immense pressure with morale at an all-time low. And what’s the Labour Government doing to tackle the issue? Next to nothing. They’re too busy jumping into bed with nationalists Plaid Cymru, focusing on creating more politicians and moving Wales towards independence instead. Mark Drakeford and Adam Price have unveiled details of their coalition – a deal that fails to deliver for Wales. The deal focuses on 46 areas, but does nothing to address the NHS crisis, our creaking infrastructure or help fire up our sluggish economy. Our NHS was struggling before the pandemic thanks for more than two decades of mismanagement by Labour - and now it’s even worse. But there’s no mention of how Labour and Plaid intend to throw our NHS a lifeline, instead putting their energy into reforming
the Senedd. The message to voters is clear. Vote Plaid, get Labour and vote Labour, get Plaid. Only the Welsh Conservatives can deliver the change that the people of Wales need. TOM GIFFARD Welsh Conservative regional Senedd member for South Wales West
LABOUR’S TOURISM LEVY IS LUNATIC THE new Labour-Plaid alliance at the Senedd is bad news in many ways but it could spell disaster for the Welsh tourism industry. Fresh from the battering that our hotels, guesthouses and caravan parks have suffered as a result of Covid, the Welsh Government and their Plaid cronies have come up with a plan for a tourism tax in Wales. If it goes through, each local authority will be able to levy a charge per night on everyone who stays in accommodation within his or her area. This means that visitors will pay more to visit Wales than they will to go to other popular places like Cornwall, Devon or the Lake District. I raised the issue with Chancellor Rishi Sunak in a debate in the House of Commons and he agreed with me that the last thing our tourism sector in Wales needs is a tax, which will make it less competitive with other areas of the UK. We have a major seaside resort at Porthcawl, which will be badly affected if this lunatic proposal is passed. But Labour, bolstered as always by Plaid, will have the numbers. Jobs and livelihoods are at stake in Porthcawl and local people must make their opposition to this plan clear. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

Happy New Year, I hope you all enjoyed a restful Christmas break. Many congratulations to our Head Team who raised a staggering £2345.12 during our recent Charities’ Week at school. The week culminated in a non-uniform/ fancy dress day in aid of Children in Need. The Head Team (dressed as a SWAT team), raised money by leg waxing, selling doughnuts, guessing numbers of balloons in a car and sweets in a jar. As well as CIN, money was donated to the RNLI, MIND, Noah’s Ark Hospital and Cardiff Rivers Group. They said, “We felt all the charities chosen were local and very relevant to people of our own age”, “It was lots of fun and a very rewarding experience.” The school was delighted once again to take part in the annual Porthcawl Rotary’s Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church between 30th November and 5th December. Miss Davies, (Welsh), brought in the wood from her farm and 14 Year 7 pupils spent the morning making ‘Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer’ Christmas decorations. Pupils enjoyed cutting and drilling the wood by hand, personalising and assembling the reindeers and then hanging them on our tree to be displayed alongside other schools’ work in the church. We’re part of a cluster campaign to raise funds towards and awareness of the ‘Dogs Trust’ charity whilst also creating a unique piece of art that will be displayed in a prominent place within Bridgend County. The artist who’ll be undertaking the painting work will be taking elements of all designs when creating the final costume. We’re really looking forward to seeing the completed work. Neevah has raised over £700 for Cancer Research by cutting her hair. She’s also donated her hair to the Princess Trust so that they can make wigs for three girls who have lost their hair through the side effects of chemotherapy. We undertook a week of activities in support of this year’s Anti-Bullying Week on the theme of ‘One Kind Word’. The week culminated in an odd sock celebration – all different to one another but each one important just like every member of the school’s community. The School Council held a very successful meeting with the Bridgend Senedd Member. They discussed matters including democracy, the environment and a new building for Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr. They also discussed work in the community and the possibility of using the new school building as a community hub in future. Cyngor Ysgol School Council
CYNFFIG NEWS This month our Student Parliament visited the Houses of Parliament and experienced the Chambers at the House of Commons and House of Lords first hand. After their tour, pupils debated “Should examinations be banned?” They also attended the Peace Schools Climate Justice Conference continuing the theme of COP26. This gave our pupils the opportunity to consider Wales and the world and explore the contribution they will play as healthy confident individuals in the future. To raise awareness and funds for Christmas Jumper Day our Student Parliament organised an assembly and activities. This included a ‘Swap Shop’ where pupils paid a pound for Christmas headbands, hats, glasses or personalised baubles. Pupils were able to ‘swap’ their item for a lunch pass for one day in the last week of term. Cynffig pupils prioritised acts of kindness during our Antibullying Awareness Week. They celebrated what makes us all unique by wearing odd socks, reflecting on ‘OneKindWord’ and creating vibrant displays across the school. Cynffig’s Children in Need fundraiser saw Staff and Sixth Form dressed in fancy dress costumes that began with the same letter as their name. From Ketchup to Spiderman they did not disappoint as we raised money for this fantastic cause. N Morrison

FEATURES APPROPRIATE PUPPY PLAY Puppies need much less exercise than fully grown adult dogs. You don’t want to overtire them as they are more prone to ‘bitey’ land shark moments or get up to more mischief! Safe play and exercise are essential for your puppy as their growth plates gradually close. These are the soft areas of cartilage that sit at the ends of the long bones and this closing process (endochondral ossification) is usually completed by the time your puppy is between approximately 12 and 18 months old. Until this time, your puppy is vulnerable to injury, their joints and bones can be easily damaged and this could cause the early onset of arthritis and/or degenerative joint disease. DO; • Pick your puppy’s play partners carefully when out at the park/beach. The last thing you want is for your puppy to have a negative rough interaction in this critical socialisation period as this could cause your pup to be fearful as an adult. • Be proactive, carry out a consent test. This is helpful for making sure both parties, whatever their age, are enjoying themselves. The more forward boisterous puppy is restrained for a few seconds. If the other puppy goes towards them and offers play signals, then it’s fine for the restrained puppy to be allowed to continue the play session. If the other puppy ambles off to sniff or explore away from the restrained one, then encourage both puppies to do their own exploring away from each other or play with a toy with their own guardians. • Practice your recall cue and playing with you when you’re around other dogs. • Look out for a ‘shake off’. This is where a puppy shakes their entire body when not wet, and happens when the puppy wants to calm down. It’s shaking off a bit of a stress in a positive way and the play partner will probably mirror this. If they don’t, then perform a consent test. DON’T; • Let your puppy play, or even meet other dogs all of the time, this can build up frustration pretty quickly. • Go to Puppy Parties or Socialisation Groups unless they’re run in a controlled manner. All of your puppy’s interactions should be short positive ones, NOT a free for all at this impressionable age. Puppies do not teach other puppies good manners! Last November, Bridgend Astronomical Society celebrated its 40th Anniversary! The milestone occasion was celebrated with a dinner and talk event with members at The Heronston Hotel & Spa. It was a glorious evening made even more special by the attendance of all three of the society’s founder members, Laurie Brophy, Frank Morris and Joan Hawkins. The society has gone from strength to strength in recent years and is currently enjoying its special anniversary season, dubbed #BAS40, with a packed schedule of talks, events and short courses! THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Well folks, here we are again – the beginning of a new year! I am sure, like me, you are hoping for a better year this year! As we look forward to the New Year, I imagine we will have all sorts of fresh ideas and New Year’s resolutions. I can only speak from personal experience that any New Year’s resolution I have made over the years has been totally trumped by a new life in Jesus. At least for the reason of how God promises to strengthen and sustain us through the pressures of life, as we look to him in faith - and I think it’s safe to say, we could all do with some supernatural strength to keep facing life’s issues. But there is so much more. As they say, “the benefits of knowing God are out of this world”. God is good and full of love! In fact, you will not hear about this on the news, but many people in the world (particularly in the near east) are turning to Jesus for a new start, as he appears to them in dreams. VOLUNTEERING TO HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES TIDY AND LITTER FREE
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, hundreds of volunteers in Bridgend County Borough have been helping to keep their communities tidy and litter free. And now, Keep Wales Tidy is encouraging people to keep up the good work, providing a range of equipment and support to volunteers, including health and safety guidance. Litter picking gadgets, hi-vis vests, bin bags and hoops can all be borrowed from litter picking hubs across the county borough where volunteers are also able to record exactly where and when a litter pick took place and how many bags of rubbish were collected online, helping to give an overall picture of the work going on.
“Pick as you pass by making use of the free clean-up equipment at your local hub. It is essential that our communities, green spaces and beaches are kept clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. Together we can all make a difference.
There are currently litter picking hubs in Porthcawl, Pencoed, Pyle and Caerau with five more in the process of being set up.
Bridgend County Borough Council Deputy Leader Hywel Williams said: “I would like to thank all the residents who have gone out of their way to keep Bridgend County Borough clean and tidy during the pandemic, they have made a real difference for us all.
Those who want to take part but can’t access a litter hub can register as a litter champion with Keep Wales Tidy and receive the same level of support. Alternatively, any groups can request advice and support from Keep Wales Tidy for one-off litter picks.
“We look forward to even more litter picking hubs opening in the near future and encourage all volunteers to sign up with Keep Wales Tidy in order to access the necessary kit as well as the relevant insurance, and health and safety policies.”

A total of 50 washbags filled with ladies’ toiletries and 31 selection boxes for the children currently at the Refuge together with 30 Christmas cards were handed over on Saturday 4th December when a fundraising Festive Afternoon Tea was held at the home of former Club President Sharon Dixon. Brownies in Newton celebrated their 60th birthday in great style at the beginning of December with a fundraising dance-athon and Christmas party. Girls have been attending weekly Brownie meetings in Newton Schoolroom since 1st December 1961. Even in lockdown they continued to meet every week virtually and returned to face-toface initially outdoors and in September back in the schoolroom. Over the last sixty years, the Brownies have enjoyed all sorts of special activities including weekends at Gorwelion in Wig Fach, participating in Porthcawl Carnival, ice skating with Cardiff Devils Ice Hockey team and joining Brownies from all over Wales for a sleepover in the Principality Stadium to mark the Big Brownie (100th) birthday! Brown Owl Helen Murdoch said, “It was lovely to celebrate our 60th with a party all together – last year we had a virtual sleepover! I’ve been a leader with the unit for over 20 years and helped out for many years before that when my Mum, Ann Browning, was Brown Owl. I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s great to see the girls’ confidence grow as they try our new things and have fun and adventures.” Sarah-Jane Burns, a former Brownie and now leader with the unit, helped the girls organise the event. “Being a Brownie was an important part of my growing up and now sharing everything that Girlguiding has to offer with new generations is fantastic. I was so proud of the girls raising money for Children in Need whilst they celebrated. NEWTON WI Vice President Pat Richards, who dealt with the monthly, opened the December meeting with WI business etc. This was followed by a turkey dinner, prepared and cooked by our President Jennifer. Everyone enjoyed the most delicious meal. Later we sang a selection of Christmas Carols by candlelight. The vote of thanks to Jennifer and the Committee was given by Lilian Marke. Also thanks to Judith Shaw who accompanied us for the carols. The evening was declared a great success. The Christmas tree festival at All Saints Church was once again an amazing sight. A big thank you to the Craft class for their expertise in displaying such a delightful tree. On November 23rd. the Glamorgan Federation organized an evening of 50s and 60s music at the Hi Tide Inn. The Porthcawl fundraising Committee of Kidney Wales decorated a tree for the Rotary Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints Church, Porthcawl at the beginning of December 2021. The Church looked very festive with a wide range of trees all beautifully decorated. We have not been able to hold the usual Coffee mornings and other fundraising events because of the ongoing Pandemic but are hopeful that these will be able to go ahead in the near future. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL November was a relatively quiet month, but we dealt with 6 logged incidents and monitored another 4. On the 22nd November, we were asked by HMCG to assist in a visual search for a person washed off a fishing vessel off Scarweather Sands. A CCTV scan was commenced immediately, a secure CCTV link established and within minutes the unmanned vessel was seen heading in a Northeasterly direction towards Rest Bay beach at approximately 15 knots. HMCG were advised and we were asked to maintain observation. Meanwhile, the fisherman was successfully recovered by Porthcawl RNLI, after his location was pinpointed by the Coastguard helicopter, transferred to Mumbles lifeboat and taken to safety. Both Porthcawl and Port Talbot Coastguard were also involved in this incident. We wish the fisherman a full recovery. One of our watchkeepers, Ian Cole, was awarded an OBE in the 2020 Queen’s New Year’s Honours but due to COVID, the Investiture was delayed until 3rd November 2021 at Windsor Castle. It was presented by The Princess Royal, Princess Anne in recognition of (primarily) Ian’s Services to Defence (MOD) but he was also highly commended for his services to HM Coastguard and his involvement with NCI and RNLI. Tuesday the 14th December and we meet in the Talbot Center where we had our Christmas party and a good time was had by all, Enid organised our entertainment Bingo and pass the parcel rounded off our party we left full of sandwiches, cake and trifle, clutching our secret Santa parcels. 2022 is the year we’re all looking forward to we’re all hoping for some normality with new members and new things for us to have a go learning, we’re all there for our members and the WI is a great way to meet friends and make new ones. We all hope you and your readers had a good Christmas and a happy new year and like us are looking forward to better times ahead. Christine Callaghan

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL All our members hope you had a lovely Christmas and wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. Our last 2021 meeting was attended by our DC Maria and while in Porthcawl, along with some members of the committee, she visited our new Honorary member Beryl, who celebrated her 100th birthday at the end of December. We had tea and cake together and gave her a Christmas arrangement, card and a100 balloon. We also had a Family Christmas Lunch in the Hi-Tide where both Inner Wheel and Rotary members enjoyed Christmas dinner along with their children and grandchildren who were lucky to have a visit from Father Christmas. Our next meeting is at 6pm on the first Tuesday in January at the Grove. We hope all our readers had a very good Christmas and a Happy New Year. This year will be a challenge for us as the Covid situation in Africa has curtailed our operations, making tool distribution difficult. Some projects are still going ahead and we are supporting these with kits of tools for various trades. We really appreciate your tool donations; unfortunately we are sending fewer tools so storage is becoming a problem. If you have tools to donate please call John on 01656 786367, he will advise you if we can accept them, please do not bring tools to the workshop as we may not have space for them. We have a special thank you to Haulwen Phillips, Haulwen makes delicious marmalade, which she sells and donates some of the proceeds to us, which we use to buy wood for us to make crates. The crates have to be made from 12mm plywood to specific sizes to fit into a container. The price of wood has risen considerably last year so we are grateful her contribution. We are desperately short of carpentry vices of all sizes; these are required for all carpentry tool kits, which make up the bulk of kits sent to Africa

ROTARY ROUNDUP After having to cancel so many activities last year, Porthcawl Rotary was pleased to be able to resume activities leading up to Christmas. The Christmas Tree Festival went ahead at All Saints’ Church and was well attended by local people as well as visitors from further afield. The splendid display of trees were placed and decorated by schools, businesses and organisations in the Porthcawl area. The Carolcade went ahead, much to the excitement of local children who saw the decorated sleigh pass along their streets with Christmas music playing and Santa and Mrs. Christmas checking up on their gift requests and of course, the availability of mince pies when he calls!! The Rotary Postal Service was operational again this year and thousands of cards delivered to the right address (we hope!) by Rotarian posties; and a street collection was well supported by people shopping in the town. All monies raised will be donated to local charities and Porthcawl Rotary would like to thank all who attended and supported these activities with such generosity and wish everybody a happy and healthy New Year. HISTORY MEET MY ANCESTORS In 1449, my ancestor Sir Henry Stradling, his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Elizabeth, encountered a pirate, Colyn Dolphyn. A native of Brittany, Dolphyn was based on Lundy Island (pictured). Aboard the St Barbe, Henry, his family and crew, set sail from his estates in Somerset for the Welsh coast. They encountered Colyn Dolphyn, who transferred them to his barque, the Sea Swallow. Dolphyn demanded a ransom of 1,000 marks for Henry, Elizabeth and daughter Elizabeth’s release. The ransom was not forthcoming so over a period of two years the price went up to 2,200 marks. At that point the Stradlings were forced to sell their manors of Bassaleg and Rogerstone in South Wales, two manors in Oxfordshire and the Lordship of Sutton in Monmouthshire. With the ransom paid, Dolphyn released Henry and his family. However, there was a twist in the tale. Several years later, Colyn Dolphyn was out pirating when a storm blew up. That storm drove his ship on to Nash Rocks near Colhugh Beach. The locals alerted Sir Henry Stradling who raised his men. SAVING FAMILY HISTORY At the museum a few weeks ago a new resident to the town donated a carrier bag of documents found in the loft of a house he is currently renovating. The bag would have been heading for the skip had he not spent a few moments leafing through the contents. While not of any financial value he realised that the documents might be important piece of someone’s family history. Included in the collection were a set of letters to/from an army dentist while he was a Japanese POW during WW2. We are please to say that after some research the museum has found some living descendants of the POW now living in South Africa Copies of the letters were sent to the descendant and below is 48 | seaside news
Robert Fitzhamon granted Candleston to Herbert de Quentin in the 12th century. The Cantelupe family were appointed tenants and Candleston is a corruption of their name. Hugh Despenser refers to Robert De Cantelupe here in 1320 and possibly he, or his successor John, replaced the earlier timber ringwork fortification with a fortified manor consisting of a D-shaped courtyard with curtain wall, a two-storey hall, a tower with vault and a solar, sitting on a small promontory overlooking its own farmland. The Candleston Brook runs nearby and higher up the valley was the village of Cantelupeston or Tregantlow. In 1468 Candleston passed to Richard Craddock and then his son Sir Richard Craddock, whose wealth and status led him to gentrify the castle, substantially rebuilding the hall. During the 16th and 17th centuries it was owned by the Herbert family who added another wing and stable. However, sand encroachment covered the farmland and the estate lost its value. John Leland wrote in 1538 “the sandes of the se sore hurtith the ground”. Sir John Nicholl bought the Merthyr Mawr estate around 1803 and lived in Candleston Castle until builders had finished his new house, after which Candleston was abandoned to the elements. I can remember seeing the old GWR logo above the door on the corner of Dock Street. It was about 1948- 49 that my father, Robert lvey, began renting the building from the GWR for use as a printing workshop. At that time, the stationmaster was a Mr. Roberts, who lived in South Road. The railway station was well used, with a regular scheduled service between Porthcawl and Pyle, including pupils of the Bridgend Grammar Schools. The early fifties were boom years for the station. In the summer months several ‘special’ trains daily brought day-trippers to the seaside. The trains were shunted into holding positions at the side of Salt Lake car park and remained there for the day. The station was a typical station of the day whilst the goods area was three times as large, with huge sliding doors opening onto the station yard (the present car park). The freight was delivered around the town by a flatbed lorry between 8am and 5pm, with the station closing after the last train at around 7pm. The printing business continued until 1955 after which the building was vacant for some time before eventually opening as an antique/second-hand shop. Anne Komor

A DIFFERENT YEAR IN 2022? As I look back over the last year I can only conclude that it’s been one heck of a ride, with COVID still chomping away at our heels and everything else, with new variants popping up at the most inconvenient times. Certainly, we’ve tried our best to get back to normal in so many ways in everyday life, work, etc., yet for those of us engaged in the Financial Industry, especially mortgages, it’s been a non-stop battle to keep pace. We’ve had incentives around things like a Stamp Duty holiday, Government financial help for businesses, the furlough scheme to protect jobs, etc. It’s fair to say that we may never see a year like it again, although we’re not out of the woods yet. LEGAL HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SEPARATION
PENSIONS DRAWDOWN AND LPA’S In April 2015, legislation was introduced which changed how pensions could be drawn at retirement. These changes have encouraged more people to look at using an Income Drawdown plan to keep their pension invested and to take the income they need directly from the pension pot. A suitable Income Drawdown plan could keep the saver’s pension pot intact right up to the time of their death; at which point it can be passed onto beneficiaries. However, despite the positives of drawing a pension in this manner, there is as we see it a risk which should be managed carefully. If a retiree decides to keep their pension pot invested and to draw their income from the pot, there is a growing risk of the retiree becoming physically incapable and/or losing their mental capacity – whilst their pension is still invested, producing income and requires “managing”. Even a spouse can struggle to properly control these matters. It can be complicated, timely and could result in court intervention at a high cost. Fortunately the simple step we would advise you to take is to prepare a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). This is a legal document which provides for one or more people to make decisions on the individual’s behalf. It comes into effect should the individual become incapacitated and unable to manage their own affairs, at some point in the future. LPS’s are not only utilised in respect of Pension Drawdown, but in all aspects of financial management such as paying utility bills, writing cheques and/or selling property. Directors of companies or sole traders should also consider the benefits of business LPA’s. Any LPA introduced should be professionally written, by a specialist, because it is a document which may need to cover many different situations and used in different ways under different circumstances. The wording of the LPA should be precise to cover the exact powers you wish to give to your attorneys. In summary, the new pension rules open many fresh opportunities for those coming up to retirement and looking to draw on their pensions, financial advice should be taken to explore all your options. An LPA (properly written) will protect against issues should this ill health cause the individual to lose their ability to manage their own affairs. For family lawyers, the New Year is a busy time with more people seeking advice on issues arising from the breakdown of their relationship. It may be that a couple has decided to remain together for one last Christmas for the sake of the children, only to find that the plan hasn’t worked out. Or it may be an individual who, having separated from their partner some time previously, wants to deal with matters in the New Year, as part of a resolution to get their affairs in order. There is never an ideal time to broach the subject of separating from your partner, but if you have called an end to your relationship, there are a number of things that you can do in preparation for your first appointment with a solicitor. Firstly, gather together your bank statements and credit card bills, obtain an up to date mortgage redemption statement and ask an estate agent to assess the value of your house. On a practical note, you should obtain details of your eligibility for tax credits and child benefit. The Child Maintenance Service has a helpful online assessment tool to help you work out how much you will receive or pay for your children. This information will give you an idea of the income you are likely to have from all sources and then you can work out your budget going forward. Then you could consider whether you want to attempt mediation in trying to work out arrangements for the children or to settle finances. Mediation is a sensible way to try and resolve these issues without resorting to the court. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
It’s always difficult writing a monthly column compared to a weekly one as a lot can change in a month, especially with this pandemic still here. When you read this it will be early January and I should be writing “How did your Christmas go, and did you see any good bands, etc.?” However, as I’m writing this on 4th December to meet the magazine’s deadline, who knows what this government has got planned and just one announcement can scupper things. Singer Laurence Parry and I went down to Porthcawl’s John Street bandstand to see the Xmas lights turned on but sadly it was cancelled. I think they forgot to put batteries in them! We made a video about it and put it on Facebook and it cheered a few people up. I hope my good friend and fellow columnist Anthony Hontoir gets better soon after his bike accident. Anthony, who writes his monthly Film Maker’s Point of View, has made some great local history DVDs which can be purchased from his Downwood Films website. In October and November I made two trips up to Scotland as part of a film crew working on Carl Richards’s lighthouse documentary. We were joined there by sound recordist Paddy Copland and on the first trip we went far north to Fraserburgh, near Paddy’s home city of Aberdeen, to film at the Northern Lighthouse Board’s Museum of Scottish Lights, and for the second trip we filmed an interview with Mike Bullock, the NLB’s chief executive at their Edinburgh headquarters. We based ourselves on both occasions at The Hawes Inn, a delightful hotel in South Queensferry, right under the Forth railway bridge, that magnificent example of Victorian civil engineering, completed in 1890, which appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 masterpiece, “The 39 Steps”, and whilst there, I couldn’t resist the temptation to take a walk along a footpath at the water’s edge to find the exact spot where Hitchcock’s camera had been set up to take the shots of the bridge. Nowadays, the two Forth road bridges appear in the background, which, notwithstanding their own importance in linking both sides of the Firth of Forth, slightly spoil the view! Well here we are again with a worsening Covid situation and we at Laleston Gardening Club have decided that it is best to close our doors once again until the situation improves. You may be tucked up indoors browsing the seed catalogues and dreaming of better days ahead, it’s a good time to plan your garden for the coming season. Seeds can be started off indoors this month for early crops, lettuce, summer cabbage etc. Providing the ground isn’t frozen bare root fruit trees can be started off this month too. If weather permits your veg and seedbeds can be prepared ahead. Please bear in mind that the Gardening Club will be holding its usual Plant Sale in May and this time there will be a separate perennial sale a couple of weeks earlier. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Roald Dahl once said “If I had my way I would remove January from the calendar altogether and have an extra July instead” Wouldn’t that be lovely! January might be in the middle of winter but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow. Gardeners are all optimists convinced, every year, that their garden is going to be better than ever (of course it will!) If you’re getting itchy green fingers, sow some ‘Sutton’ broad beans in pots. They can go in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse, no fuss. Put early potatoes to chit, start off some sweet peas, all something to look forward to! Dig over empty beds, the winter weather will break down large clods of earth making it so much easier to work in the spring, add some organic matter, no need to dig it in the worms will do that for you. Think of those extra Christmas pounds dropping off - a free workout! If you have honeysuckle, it’s time to cut it back hard encouraging healthy new growth in the Spring Did you know, honeysuckle is used in herbal pillows (to induce sweet dreams) and makes a fab toy for cats, they love its strong scent! FUN, FRIENDSHIP AND FOOTBALL! The Bryntirion Athletic JFC U15 girls team have had a memorable start to the 2021/2022 football season. Following their heroes and providing inspiration themselves Coaches Chris and Rhian organised for the girls to travel as a group to watch Wales women beat Estonia 4-0 and gain a fantastic 5-0 victory over Greece in their World Cup qualifying matches. Such a wonderful experience for our girls to be able to have together. They even got a shout out in the official ‘Diolch’! We are incredibly proud of our U15 girls. They are currently unbeaten themselves in the South Wales Women’s and Girls League. Many play for the South Wales Development Centre and for BGC Wales as well as Bridgend District and their schools, but every single girl gives 100% each week for BAJFC. They are themselves an inspiration for the rest of our club. These girls have grown up together and have found fun and friendship through football. Our club’s Nipper section are aged between 7-13. As a Nipper your child will be taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills, surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, boardpaddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays).
We also run lifesaving training sessions at Pyle pool all through the year. Children are also able to obtain various national surf safety awards and are taught valuable lifesaving and safety skills at both the beach and the pool.
