LETTERS CHILDREN IN NEED 2020 Dear Editor, On a rare sunny late autumn afternoon 7-year-old Lowri completed her fifth challenging Children in need sponsored walk covering nearly five miles. Supported by her parents and grandparents Lowri had chosen a familiar, but still demanding, coastal path from the Porthcawl golf club to Sker Point- and learning en route about the tragic loss of 47 lives when the crews of the SS Samtampa and the Mumbles lifeboat both sank in a violent storm 73 years ago. At this very difficult time thanks go to a host of friends, family, neighbours, working colleagues at Persimmon Homes and staff at the Royal Masonic Home who were responsible for adding £388 to the national appeal. Lowri, a pupil at the Nottage Primary School, and her supporters have now been responsible for raising £1,533 over the last five years. The photograph shows Lowri sitting alongside the memorial to those who lost their lives. We’re all Very proud of you. Mark Lewis, Porthcawl
LETTER FROM CIVIC TRUST (DEC 2020 ISSUE) Dear Editor, I was disappointed to read the letter from Porthcawl Civic Trust in the last issue of Seaside News claiming that there has been no attempt by Bridgend County Borough Council to interact with town residents or representative bodies over regeneration plans. Porthcawl’s elected representatives are involved in regular briefings on all regeneration matters, have access to detailed plans and drawings, and participate in their development. Both I and senior regeneration officers have previously attended numerous meetings with the trust, Sustainable Wales, Porthcawl Town Council and other organisations, and will be happy to do so again once the pandemic is over. We also undertake full and meaningful public consultation on regeneration projects – for example, when we shared the proposals, designs and planning details around the Eastern Promenade sea defences, or when we held sessions with students from Porthcawl Comprehensive to ensure that the views of younger residents could be taken into account. Where the trust’s letter specifically referred to plans featured in a recent Cabinet report, this was there to provide a phased framework for development. No consultation had taken place on it as it did not have any formal status from a planning perspective. The council has responded to the trust’s concerns in full, so if anyone wants to find out more, the trust has stated that the response will be posted at their website. Councillor Charles Smith Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration

PORTHCAWL PROJECT COLLECTS THOUSANDS FOR BRIDGEND FOODBANK Dear Editor, In what was a huge community effort, Porthcawl residents took part in a reverse advent project in support of the Bridgend Foodbank. During the reverse advent those who took part chose to add food items to their box every day, resulting in a generous hamper to be donated to the food bank to support those in need this Christmas. Over 130 supporters filled their boxes with items from everyday essentials to luxury treats in the hope of ensuring everyone is able to eat this Christmas the way lots of us take for granted. The project stemmed from a Facebook post by Lucy Bevington, of Nottage, who posted the idea online after taking inspiration from an idea she had seen elsewhere. The response from the local people was overwhelming and Lucy created a dedicated online group to co-ordinate the project on November 1st. During the month pictures and posts flooded in from kind members of the public pledging their support to the cause. A mass collection took place on November 29th where Lucy enlisted the help of people within the community to safely collect the packages over a 4-hour period. They delivered the packages to Porthcawl Foodbank at the YMCA, where it took the staff a further 10 hours to sort through all of the donated items. They estimated around £3,000 worth of food was donated in addition to a £155 cash donation. The project engaged so many people throughout town from children to the elderly and epitomised community spirit at Christmas. Lucy Bevington, said of the project, “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the reverse advent calendar project. I am absolutely delighted that the people of Porthcawl showed such kindness and willing to help. It was a group effort, and the sense of community was fantastic. It makes me proud to be part of such a wonderful town”. If you would like to make a donation to the Bridgend Food Bank please contact them on 01656 858713 alternatively join Porthcawl Foodbank Donation group on Facebook. Lucy Bevington, Porthcawl

NO BEATING ABOUT THE BUSH In August 1996 Dave Bush retired from being deputy head of King James’s School in Almondbury, an 11 to 16 comprehensive on the outskirts of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. He has immersed himself in life in Porthcawl especially through Kenfig National Nature Reserve, the Porthcawl town twinning association and as chairman of Porthcawl badminton club over many years. In his final year he kept a detailed diary of the everyday trials, tribulations and rewards of being a senior teacher. This is spiced with recollections and comparisons over 35 years in education. The 248 page hardback book, priced at £15, is printed on high-quality paper with numerous colour photos and can be obtained by visiting oas.org.uk or contacting Dave directly at david.39bush@gmail.com An enjoyable and informative read is guaranteed!
BOOK REVIEW BY LOUISE MUMFORD The Extraordinary Hope of Dawn Brightside by Jessica Ryn (HQ) I think, in this new year, we all need to be looking on the bright side – and I have the perfect book for that! Dawn Brightside has been running from her past for twenty-two years and two months, precisely. So when she is offered a bed in St Jude’s Hostel for the Homeless, it means so much more than just a roof over her head. But with St Jude’s threatened with closure, Dawn worries that everything is about to crumble around her all over again. Not only is the colour of this book jacket something to gladden the heart (that pop of yellow!) but also the story inside. If you are looking for an uplifting read, then definitely reach for this book. It is hard not to love the character of Dawn Brightside and the way she is so positive despite the hardships that have befallen her. And if you fancy something else, perhaps try my debut thriller, Sleepless, which is out in ebook (99p), audio and paperback now. John Marrs, bestselling author of The One has called Sleepless “a thrilling, plausible and gripping debut. Frighteningly inventive.”

PUBLIC SPEAKING
I hope you guys had a fab Christmas but a safe one. Who would have thought we would still be in the middle of a pandemic? Unfortunately, we have no idea what the year lies ahead in terms of fundraising but if any one you want to do any COVID safe fundraising, we would be grateful. Which takes me onto our first virtual event, A light for a life was a great success, thanks to everyone who either donated and or joined us. It was very different wasn’t it? We managed to raise. £179.80 which for a virtual event and we had no idea how it was going to go we arxe really pleased with.
Most people find public speaking very stressful. The night before having to speak in front of a large audience, they often sleep badly. They may even feel like vomiting before going onto the stage. But why does public speaking affect us so strongly? What can be done about it? I see the suffering here arising from the powerful sense of ‘me’ and ‘mine’ that is provoked by being the centre of attention. The strong desire for acceptance and praise, and the fear of rejection and criticism, can be crippling. My advice is to establish the mind in loving kindness. Meditate on the sincere wish that whatever you say may be of benefit to your audience. By doing this you replace your anxiety about how people see you, with the beautiful wish to share whatever you know – however much or little it might be – for the welfare of all. When ‘me’ and ‘mine’ are dissolved in loving kindness, how could there be stress? Neville Evans
HIDDEN SUGARS
Please do not forget that we’re doing the event step up for January, which for those of you who don’t know it’s where you’ve got to walk 12,000 steps per day every day throughout the month of January. You’ll get the choice of a neck buff and you’ll also get a water bottle when you sign up, which is only £25.00. Once you get to the 31st trust me you’ll be so pleased that you did it and for me it kick started me getting fitter and healthier again. Go to our website www.costofcancer.org.uk for more details. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Anyway, do not forget to keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours, wear those masks and keep a social distance. The sooner we adhere to the rules the sooner we can get back to normal fundraising. Here’s to what I hope will be a happy but healthier 2021. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
There are sugars in a great number of foods whether labeled or not. Breakfast cereals may be called “wholegrain” or “fortified with vitamins” which is good but they probably contain sugar, read the list of ingredients. Flavoured yoghurts will contain a high level of sugar, buy natural yoghurt and add your own fruit. There is added sugar in ketchup, sauces, salad cream, relish, etc. again check the labels and avoid where possible. A lot of drinks contain sugar, flavoured milks, carbonated drinks, sports drinks, etc. be aware. Hidden sugars can be labeled as fructose, sucrose, maltose and dextrose. You may be consuming more sugar than you realise and current thinking would indicate that too much sugar is worse than too much fat for your health. Glyn Hardwicke

NEWS BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE
Thoughts from a Belfast woman (Part 2) By Pauline Lawrence. In a recent daytime DIY series a house was bought for two young people. Each couple was given a budget and six months to improve their house and sell it on. The ‘sledgehammer stage’ was usually easy. But the rebuilding stage often revealed a myriad of problems with the house, and owners found it difficult to plan and work together. Often the owners split up, resulting in no reward after a lot of effort was wasted. The people of Northern Ireland survived a sledgehammer stage of their history. They now live out the trials and tribulations of the rebuilding stage. The Northern Ireland protocol gives recognition to all that effort, even as it now creates new constitutional territory for Great Britain. The EU emerged from the sledgehammer of world war. Today, 27 EU countries are working together building the common good of their populations. Brexit Britain has taken a sledgehammer to its EU membership. What will replace it? Nobody knows. The trials of rebuilding are only just beginning. Rebuilding is much harder than knocking down. Pauline Lawrence is a member of Bridgend for Europe. Allison Felton, Bridgend@WalesforEurope.org

NEWS FROM THE MAYOR – PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL I do hope you were all able to have the best time possible given the difficult circumstances over Christmas and New Year. As I write there is still much more to do to get the virus under control however, the news that a vaccination has been developed and is being rolled out across Wales does encourage us that there is a return to ‘some form of normality’ and light at the end of the tunnel. Council will shortly complete the freehold transfer of Griffin Park including the play park back to Porthcawl from BCBC. The ambition is to work with current stakeholders and other voluntary groups to create a vibrant leisure, educational and sporting venue for the community, run by the community. We are lucky to have a very active local group volunteering their time and expertise to maintain and improve The Wilderness area. The group has plans to a create a high- quality wildlife haven which will also serve as a leisure, educational experience for families, residents and visitors. PTC will work in partnership by providing some financial support for materials and services and match funding for grant applications. COUNCILLOR BRIAN JONES Mayor of Porthcawl
NEW FACILITIES FOR COSY CORNER Talks with Visit Wales are ongoing over plans that could restore Cosy Corner and deliver a range of new community facilities for Porthcawl. Since the site was partially excavated and had foundations and other work carried out before it was vacated by the maritime centre contractors, the council is seeking to introduce the changes using our own funding and by applying for additional support under the Welsh Government’s Tourist Attractor Destination programme. As available funding is significantly less than what would be required for a development on the scale of the maritime centre, and the money needs to be secured, spent and claimed within a very short timeframe, it is important to maintain realistic expectations on what can be delivered. Potential options under consideration are to provide a highquality children’s play area which will complement nearby attractions, a new outdoor performance space with seating and landscaping, facilities for use by community organisations such as the Sea Cadets, new premises suitable for small retail and start-up enterprises, and storage and changing facilities for users of the nearby marina. The council is currently finalising a funding application to Visit Wales, so look out for more news on this soon. IMPROVEMENTS FOR REST BAY PLAYING FIELDS
A NEW YEAR- A REASON TO BE OPTIMISTIC
It’s great to see Rest Bay Sports, which represents FC Porthcawl, and Porthcawl United taking over the management of the pavilion and playing fields in Rest Bay. As part of the community asset transfer process, Bridgend County Borough Council has allocated more than £45,000 towards the cost of redeveloping the pavilion, and is providing a further £10,000 for pitch maintenance equipment. The clubs have ambitious plans for transforming the outdated pavilion, extending and refurbishing the first floor level and providing an elevated balcony overlooking the fields. For some time now, we have been working with these and other clubs, local organisations and town and community councils through the community asset transfer programme. This is ensuring that local facilities can be improved and protected for future generations, and that they can continue to be invested in despite the massive reductions in funding that local councils have experienced over the last decade. Last November, short-term tenancies were agreed for 11 bowls greens, and a number of other transfers are due to be finalised in the coming months. With discussions underway on 53 further outdoor sports facilities and park pavilions across the county borough, the initiative is proving to be highly effective.
Despite the possibility of welcoming in the new year under the highest level of restrictions, (at the time of writing, Covid cases are rising in nearly all our local authority areas), we can welcome 2021 with cautious optimism. Against the odds, a Covid-19 vaccine has proven to be effective, has received MHRA approval for use and is being rolled out to our most vulnerable. There are two other vaccines that have proved effective with one awaiting MHRA approval. All health boards in Wales have started administering vaccines to care home staff, those over 80 years and frontline health and social care workers most at risk. Vaccinations will continue apace in 2021. The aim is to vaccinate as many people as possible, as swiftly as possible, safely and with minimal vaccine waste. The Welsh Government has been working to find a solution where it can deliver the vaccine to care homes and (at time of writing) a pilot programme is underway in North Wales. If successful, the Welsh Government will roll out care home vaccination across Wales in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we must continue our efforts to control the spread of coronavirus in Wales.

CARWYN JONES MS for Bridgend
LOCAL SCHOOLS STEP UP TO THE CHALLENGE I’m sure readers will agree that 2020 was a challenging year, and this was certainly the case for local schools. Within a very short period of time, they had to make some urgent, innovative decisions around moving lessons online for more than 23,000 pupils. They also had to adapt quickly into provide emergency hubs designed to care for the children of key workers, and to help ensure that children who are eligible for free school meals did not go hungry. Inevitable disruption had to be overcome around GCSE, A and AS level examinations, but a common sense approach prevailed which ensured pupils received the results they deserved. Achieving all this was no small feat, and I want to thank all staff, teachers, governors and pupils for their sterling efforts throughout the year, and for the dedication they are continuing to demonstrate. As we move into 2021, the outlook remains similarly challenging, but also a little brighter. Covid-19 vaccines are being rolled out, and plans are in place to base this year’s results on teacher-managed assessments. Going forward, we’ll be looking at how blended learning can benefit schools, and will continue to do all that we can to keep children safe and well. COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
SCHOOLS ST CLARE’S SCHOOL
PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
Did you know St Clare’s School is in the top 5% of schools in the UK for ALPS (A-Level Performance System for the last 3 years? Our results are consistently well above the national average. Last year 76.3% of all grades were at A*/A and 100% at A*/B. Top leaver destinations included many in the Russell Group to read competitive subjects such as Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Veterinary Medicine, Architecture, and Computer Science & AI. Our Sixth Form students benefit from an exceptional education with smaller tutorial-style groups, new Sixth Form Centre and specialised teaching delivered by experienced subject specialists and examiners. Students benefit from six hours of tuition per subject per week (that’s at least 1 extra lesson per subject per week than most schools/colleges). Our Virtual Sixth Form Open Evening is on Tuesday, 2nd February. To book your place, please contact our friendly Admissions Team on (01656) 789966 or visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk Further information about our range of scholarships and bursaries for September 2021 entry to Year 12 and Year 7 is available on our website. We would like to wish Seaside News readers a very safe and healthy New Year! Helen Hier, Head Teacher Picture caption: St Clare’s Sixth Form trip to Paris (before Covid)
Thank you for the very positive feedback from parents and members of the community about our virtual carol service, which was released just before the end of term. Pupils were delighted to have the opportunity to showcase their musical talents at All Saints’ Church, albeit in a socially distanced way, and many thanks to Father Phillip Masson for his support. This year, instead of the traditional Sixth Form Open Evening in January, staff have produced resources informing pupils and parents all about their subjects at A Level. Interactive presentations, voice over notes, Bitmojis, greenscreens and all sorts of video editing software have been used to give the best indication of what subjects at KS5 entail. These resources have been collated together in an interactive website available from January during ‘focus fortnight’. Pupils can navigate through this in their own time and make an informed decision about their choices for next year. Mrs O’Brien has explained the process of completing the options form on the home page. Current pupils, or those studying elsewhere, can access the website that will be shared via various platforms, including our school’s website (www.porthcawlschool.co.uk), Twitter, Facebook and SIMS ParentApp. Many congratulations to Ben Pownall, Matt Powell, Joe Dingle and Tegan McGlynn in reaching the final of the Life Sciences Challenge at Cardiff University, beating 182 teams from 50 other schools along the way. We are very proud of you! Andrew Slade Head Teacher
THE BRIDGE ALTERNATIVE PROVISION
ENGLISH TUTOR
Welcome back to the Spring Term. We hope you have all had an amazing Christmas and stayed safe. Let’s hope this new term brings us joy and happiness. In the Autumn Term Ks3 pupils and the Primary class continued to visit Forest School at Tondu House Farm. Some students tried ‘belaying’ for the first time, while others tried den building, had a cook out and joined in team games. All this whilst also caring for the chickens and the ponies. The Theme for the term was ‘A child’s war’. We learnt about evacuees, refugees and child soldiers. This related to UN Article 38 ‘Children should not be allowed to go to war’. Due to Covid, unfortunately we could not have our usual school Christmas dinner all together, instead the school cooks prepared turkey baguettes with all the trimmings. Delicious. A big thank you to all the kitchen staff. Stay safe and have a Happy New Year. By Hannah Ks3

Even though school has been a little different this term, we have loved every minute. We have had our challenges but with an amazing team of staff, children, parents and governors we have had a little taste of normal. Each month we are celebrating every child’s birthday by holding a class bubble party. The children play party games, eat party food and the birthday child receives a gift. We have really loved being able to help our children celebrate with their friends. This year we wanted to give every child a little Christmas gift to remember 2020, together the staff designed rainbow logo glasses to present to the children.

POEMS NATURE’S SECRET The river follows its winding route Down towards the sea. The Moon and stars alight the sky And the birds sing in the trees. The Sun shines down upon the World And is succeeded by the night. The rain leaves life refreshed and new And the snow falls pure white. The flowers grow to make the Earth A far more pretty place. But all admit they can’t compete With the beauty of your face. For you are something special You add that extra spice. The day that I first met you, The Earth became Paradise. Maybe You could walk with me Enjoy the different things you see And chase away the darkness You could talk with me Relax into that comfort And take away the pain Embrace the sunlight Of a cloudless day And chase away the rain Or maybe sit with me For just a few moments And let those moments Be all that you need today And think with me So that our thoughts Are each other’s thoughts Just maybe Then dream with me For if you dream with me The morning will be less dark And laugh with me And let that laughter question The uncertainty inside you And one day Whenever it’s right for you You can ask my name And I will tell you My name is hope Stuart Jones, Porthcawl

AN ODE TO ONE APPLE A community in poverty – Sacred bitter Chinese Indian herb their only luxury Do you live on nothing but bread and rice do you suffer like Jesus Christ? Will you fight the Devil himself all your life? Despite penury and misery Laugh in the face of adversity struggle for your righteous liberty Create the smile in the face of strangers Personally, guard the lamb and piglet in the manger. Is it true that fruit grows on the tree? Is it true that clean drinking water is not free? I hear your screams from pogrom and terror In my mind in my soul but never The twisted dietary oppression of your plight Yet your people give us all divine light. Do you fight the evil clouds and make god laugh in luminous blue? Electric light spread the Chi of your Christianity and divinity Set an example to us all even the wise Jew Who smiles paternally and asserts solidarity? For all these reasons for each and every season They will each have fresh fruit and this is their right For all the centuries they personally gave us all eternal light Does the Messiah forgive us from his cross can you grasp my vision? That this tribe of Spartacus deserve some basic nutrition? Or even some freedom Why does God need a reason? And who are these people Who fight a battle for one apple? See the hungry child struggle for her right to an orange Or a few raisins to put in her porridge And yet politely explain and expound their biblical knowledge. Would it be best to understand vegetable as medicine And curry powder an essential vitamin? Does not God prescribe in diet liberty And freedom. Mr J Bucke Cefn Glas, Bridgend

FEATURES BAVO CELEBRATES MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) recently celebrated their past year’s achievements during their online Annual General Meeting. Chief Executive of BAVO Heidi Bennett, said: “Our ultimate aim is to strengthen voluntary and community groups and help them to flourish. We work hard to recruit and place volunteers with local groups so that they can continue delivering their excellent work and activities in communities. We also offer one-to-one support to community groups and charities when they need help, but we can only do this because we have a number of partners and funders who invest in us to do so. We are extremely grateful to Welsh Government, Bridgend County Borough Council and Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board who provide us with some core funding.” In 2019/ 2020, BAVO distributed over £306,000 to local groups on behalf of other funders. They also responded to 2,862 enquiries and placed 252 volunteers with local groups. Full details of all their past year’s achievements can be found by reading their latest Annual Impact Report 2019-20 at www.bavo.org.uk BAVO’s Chair Steve Curry added: “We’d like to thank the whole team at BAVO, our funders and all third sector organisations in Bridgend County Borough who simply make life better for all of us.” If you are a voluntary or community group in Bridgend County Borough, membership to BAVO is free of charge. BAVO can provide support, guidance, practical assistance and information to develop skills, services and activities. For further details, call 01656 810400 or visit www.bavo.org.uk Jane Hall - BAVO

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE
Do you wondered where you’re donated tools go? 13,240 tools were shipped in a double-sized 40-foot container that arrived in Malawi in December 2020 As well as trainees receiving toolkits from this latest shipment, a total of 21 training kits were sent to partners, including 6 sent to the Young Achievers Foundation (YAF) to help to equip their newly built training centre. Despite all the challenges that have been thrown our way last year, volunteers across the UK have pulled together to work tirelessly to ensure that tools were refurbished, packed into kits, and sent – ahead of schedule. These tools will change the lives of hundreds of people The 386 kits include tools for tin-smithing, bike repair, tailoring, auto mechanics and carpentry trades– to name just a few – will be placed in the hands of newly trained young people throughout Malawi. These pre-loved tools will be used once again by trade’s people to create livelihoods for many decades to come. All the tools donated are of high quality and invaluable to new graduates to get their business set up and running. Thank you for donating your unwanted tools and sewing machines, people can now learn quality skills and use them to build sustainable livelihoods. David Cook (Workshop Manager)
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Happy new year to everyone! I am sure we are all HOPING for a different kind of year this year. What a year 2020 was! Thinking of this word hope. The bible tells us that when we come into a relationship with Christ, there is great hope for our future. Paul tells us that Christ in us (which happens through a relationship with him) is the hope of glory (Colossians 1 v 27). This means that one day we can know the reality of heaven and be totally free from the trouble of this life. There are many good things about our lives but unfortunately many troubles also. This world is full of trouble. The wonderful news is that we can experience the presence of God in this lifetime, helping us and blessing us. And in addition to that, the glorious future of being with God for eternity, enjoying the realities of heaven. That’s all we need to do is choose him and follow him. Let me invite you to put God first in your life. He will manage the rest! God Bless. Neil Harvey

FEATURES PORTHCAWL RNLI VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE ROTARY ROUNDUP LONG SERVICE RECOGNITION Nine Porthcawl volunteers recently received RNLI long service medals, each for in excess of twenty years of service to the Charity. In a socially distanced ceremony each volunteer was presented with an RNLI Long Service Medal from Station President, Peter Scott. Those presented with long service medals were: Philip Missen MBE, Lifeboat Operations Manager. Ian Stroud, Station Chair and Deputy Press Officer. Stephen Jones, Deputy Launch Authority. Aileen Jones MBE, Deputy Launch Authority. Tim Morgan, Deputy Launch Authority. Stephen Knipe, Deputy Launch Authority. Carl Evans, Senior Helm. Andrew Walmsley, Helm. Alex Denny, Helm. Peter congratulated and thanked each of the medal recipients for their dedication. The group had accumulated over 200 years of volunteering between them over the years. Peter also gave a big thank you to partners and families for their patience and understanding for those that received the medals time to volunteer. Philip Missen said, ‘In what has been a challenging year for us all, covid has impacted significantly on our fundraising activity. Whilst our training exercises have been reduced we have maintained our dedication to launching to any casualty in our patch. Crews had responded so far to over 50 callouts during lockdown’. Happy New Year to you all. As part of our 70th Anniversary, Porthcawl Rotary decided that, rather than spending money on a commemoration bench or some similar project, we would directly help the local community and, in particular, the KPC Youth Club in Kenfig Hill. They urgently needed a roof repair costing £5000 therefore we started discussing fundraising events to achieve this, however the pandemic hit. All fundraising events were cancelled so the focus of our appeal shifted to our members themselves! Would they rise to the challenge? Of course, they would and soon our target was met and the roof could be repaired before any severe weather came. Cheque for £5150 was presented to Alison Mawby, Project Development Manager at KPC. Andrew Singer, President of Porthcawl Rotary said: “It has been a marvellous result to have achieved our target. I am very proud of our members who dug deep and achieved this wonderful outcome.” Alison said “We at KPC are so grateful to the members of your club for raising such an amazing amount. Please pass on our many thanks to all at Porthcawl Rotary for their incredible support so enabling the roof to be done before Christmas.” Rtn Robert Lee
PORTHCAWL U3A As we worked before Christmas to distribute our end of year Newsletter/Magazine I was heard to ask what shall I write for the Seaside News? This morning I listened to a talking book as I did my exercise session (Yes! I still do a bit of a Lockdown Workout!) I may have abandoned Joe Wickes but I do feel the benefit of a ‘Wake & Warm-up’ session. I’m not talking a total-body pump session just gentle exercising of my arthritic joints! But back to my book tape, ‘Warhorse’ by Michael Morpurgo, as they discussed the threat of war someone said ‘It’ll be over by Christmas’ and it hit me, this covid experience, did we think it was going to be over quickly? I don’t think anyone actually said to me that famous line but here we are, a New Year has started and we will soon be offered our injections. I think it will still take a while to build up confidence to meet as we did, but come the Sun, come summer we will meet again! Even if it’s for a ‘Bring your own Coffee Morning’ on the Beach! If you’ve missed our newsletter see porthcawlu3a.org.uk it’s there! Sally Corbett Chair
WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN
NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL In the month of November we logged and monitored 111 commercial vessels, 388 leisure craft, 1 military and 15 others. During these difficult times, with single-crewed watches, our priority is inshore activity such as surfers, windsurfers, kite surfers, swimmers and those along the coastline. We handled 4 incidents during the month and monitored a further 11.The logged incidents involved surfers and windsurfers in difficulty and a missing kayaker. We are pleased to say that, due to collaboration between the search and rescue assets who attended, there was another positive outcome. 259 hours watchkeeping were carried out with 3 watches covered during each day. Last month 16 days of action to end violence against Women and White Ribbon Day 2020 were held. Tragically during that time women in Wales have lost their lives to their partners. Locally, demand for help, rose 44% as 366 people got in touch with BCBC’s independent advisory service during the pandemic. Bridgend and Ogmore’s Labour’s Women’s Forums held an online vigil to mark White Ribbon Day in November and held a two minute silence. “Sarah Murphy suggested the vigil and said “Although unable to come together on the Senedd steps this year, we held a virtual vigil to highlight that violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence is a blight on our society, and one that we all have a responsibility to end for good. We all deserve to feel safe and live free from fear.” In January, as a result of the vigil, Bridgend Labour party members will be collecting toiletries for Women’s Refuges in South Wales. Most women come to the refuges with nothing but the clothes they stand in and the gift of toiletries goes some way to making up for all they have lost. HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE, HEROINES OF THE RESISTANCE A brilliant linguist, and described as ‘one of the most remarkable young women of her generation’, Jeannie Rousseau used her talents to spy on the Nazis when she worked for them as an interpreter. However, the highlight of her career arrived in 1943 when she filed her most remarkable reports – details of the Nazi’s missile and rocket development programme at Peenemünde. These reports alerted British Intelligence and saved thousands of lives. Thanks to Jeannie’s reports, the Allies bombed Peenemünde. However, shortly before D-Day, the Gestapo captured Jeannie, but not before she alerted a colleague who escaped. Betraying no one, Jeannie withstood the horrors of three concentration camps - Ravensbrück, Königsberg (a punishment camp) and Torgau - before the Swedish Red Cross rescued her. She contracted tuberculosis at the camps, but recovered. During her recovery, she met a fellow prisoner, Henri de Clarens, whom she married. The couple had two children. Henri died in 1995 while Jeannie, who post war worked as an interpreter for the United Nations, died on 23 August 2017 aged 98. BRIDGEND AND ITS FLOODS
Heavy rains in 2020 brought memories of the devastating flood of 1960 which left the town centre knee-deep in water and gave us the iconic photograph of a rowing boat on Dunraven Place. This was the culmination of a series of floods as far back as records exist. In 1779 two of the arches of the stone bridge had been washed away by and were rebuilt in the lopsided form we see today. There were floods in 1841, 1844, 1861 and 1869 when the Western Mail reported “This is the highest flood for several years, but it is a frequent occurrence at this time of year for the streets to be submerged.” After further floods in 1869 and 1877 Captain Galton, a muchrespected engineer was asked to recommend flood prevention 36 | seaside news
measures. He advocated raising the walls alongside the river and removing the old stone bridge, replacing it with a 77’ long iron bridge. Fortunately for posterity, though not for the shopkeepers of the time, this was not done. There were further significant floods in 1894, 1909 and 1944. In 1984 construction of the flood defence scheme commenced and floods have ceased to be a significant threat to the town. FROM THE MUSEUM ARCHIVES
Mrs. Pat Sheen once recounted in 1982: “Jesus Christ Price once worked as an apprentice carpenter with George Jackson’s father, on Dr Pearson’s house in Victoria Avenue. Jesus Price, being the son of Dr William Price, Llantrisant, of cremation fame. He later had his name changed by deed pole. I’m told that Dr Price had been seen in Bridgend driving a cart pulled by goats. George Jackson kept the Harbour Inn in the Square. He was a teetotaller.” Jesus, born in 1884, was the second son of Dr Price (83) and his housekeeper Gwenllian (16). Dr Price’s first son, also named ‘Iesu Grist’, had died at 5 months old earlier that year. Infamous for advocating cremation, which was considered illegal at the time, the eccentric Dr Price cremated his son’s body on an open pyre in a field in Llantrisant. Following the death of his father in 1893 Gwenllian changed her son’s name by deed pole to Nicholas Price. Following service in WW1, Nicholas trained as a carpenter. Nicholas died in 1963. Pat’s reference to Dr Neil Pearson had been a contemporary one as the house (no 38) had been built in the 1920’s. The Harbour Inn became Y Pirates Club in 1928. As to whether Dr Price rode through Bridgend? I’m afraid I’ll have to leave that one to history. Ceri Joseph

LEGAL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I am worried that my wife is having an affair, what can I do? I am thinking of filing for divorce. Answer: When one spouse commits adultery, the effect can be devastating on the other spouse and often for any children involved. In England and Wales, a divorce may only be granted if the marriage has ‘irretrievably broken down’. One of five facts will need to be proved, one being adultery. Though it seems pretty straightforward, starting divorce proceedings on the fact of adultery can cause confusion. A common misconception about divorce and adultery is that adultery will cover inappropriate text messages or all sexual relations. This is not the case. Adultery only refers to sexual intercourse between two parties of the opposite sex, one of whom you are not married to. If your spouse has committed adultery, you must state that you find it intolerable to continue to live with them. Another misconception is that you can divorce on the fact of adultery at any time during the marriage. This is actually untrue. If you find out that your spouse has committed adultery but decide to attempt to reconcile, if the reconciliation period lasts longer than 6 months, you can no longer use adultery as a fact as you will be regarded as having ‘condoned’ it. Adultery has to be either proved by yourself or admitted by your spouse. In certain circumstances, spouses do not like the idea of admitting they have cheated. This can cause more tension in the relationship. In these cases, it is sometimes better to file for divorce on the fact of behaviour to which the spouse may be more likely to agree. It is best to seek professional advice on how you wish to proceed with divorce in order to reduce the confusion and proceed in the least acrimonious way possible. Here at Melanie Lazarus and Co we can assist with all your divorce questions. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co
THE EFFECT OF A NO DEAL BREXIT ON FAMILY LAW IN THE UK Come January, there will be wide reaching changes to many aspects of our lives in the UK, and there will be changes to the powers of the courts also. 1. Divorce proceedings Prior to Brexit there was the option for individuals who have links with numerous countries within the EU to issue divorce proceedings in the country of their preference. This rule sometimes created a race between the parties to issue proceedings in the country that would provide the most favourable outcome. Following Brexit, it may be that following Brexit all European countries are treated just the same as Non-European countries. This would require a decision on jurisdiction to be made on the basis of how closely connected a family is to this country. There is concern that this could lead to unnecessary strain being added to the parties who have to litigate over which country is to deal with their divorce proceedings. 2. Children Proceedings The Hague Convention 2007 was introduced to provide a system throughout the union to facilitate the enforcement of Child Maintenance Orders. In terms of abduction, the 1980 Hague Convention will still provide a mechanism for the return of children. These provisions will go unchanged following departure from the European Union. If you already have an order relating to your child, following Brexit, it’s not clear how the issue of enforceability and recognition will be dealt with. It may be the case that parties involved in children disputes with an international element will be required to go to the additional expense of obtaining a mirror order in the foreign jurisdiction to reflect their UK order. This will of course add further expense for the parties and will prolong proceedings. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit then we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A cohabitation agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force - the agreement can say so. Even so, a cohabitation agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice. You must also be open about your individual financial positions when you enter into the agreement. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. If you wish to discuss this further then please contact us. FINANCE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR 2021 Resolutions with a financial slant are much easier to keep and the usual giving up alcohol or cigarettes or junk food. Who wants to start a diet on Jan 1st Yuk! Wait till Feb 1st instead, you know it makes sense! My to do check list on your finances will have varying priorities according to whether you’re a young family with children or retired and financially challenged! So here goes in no particular order… 1) Credit Cards to move to an interest free rate ASAP and whatever you do, do not max out your limit as it will affect your credit score as will missed payments so put your monthly payments on a direct debit. 2) Watch for fraud on your credit card such as bogus direct debits. I’ve had several recently and you can’t delete them unless you ask your bank. 3) Open an emergency fund at your bank by setting up a standing other from your current account to your new deposit account. You can do this on-line. 4) First time buyers & savers should check out ‘help to buy ISA’s’ and ‘Lifetime ISA’s’ as you’ll get an annual bonus incentive of 25% up to certain limits. 5) If you’re a homeowner and retired and need work carrying out on your house you can do it via ‘Equity Release’. Check it out and speak to your financial adviser. 6) If you have a home mortgage or ‘buy to let’ don’t forget to shop around if your deal has come to an end. You could be saving hundreds per month to go towards that savings account. 7) No body likes talking about wills much but now would be a
40 | seaside news
good time to review yours if you have a mind to. Take notice of whether your house ownership is held as ‘joint tenants’ or ‘tenants in common’ with your spouse or partner. It will make a big difference if you leave your share of the house to your wife and then she subsequently has to go into a home. Talk to your solicitor 8) Check out ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ over your estate for ‘health & welfare’ plus ‘property & financial affairs’. If you fall ill and can’t manage your affairs you need to prioritise. 9) Finally if your gardener gets complacent sack him! You could do some of the work yourself save money and get fit so it’s a win win! 2021 – A NEW BEGINNING? Welcome to the New Year everyone - let’s hope it’s one to remember for all the right reasons. Whilst we still have the ongoing situation with COVID, we’re already back hard at work dealing with new enquiries, in what could be a difficult year for finances, and the mortgage market in general. Indeed, selfemployed persons have found it particularly difficult to get mortgage funding in the last 6 months and that will continue, we think, for a while yet. Likewise, persons with credit histories that are less-than-perfect, who virtually always get declined in a high-street branch, will continue to need the knowledge, skills and guidance of appropriately experienced brokers to pick up where the high street computer says ‘NO’. At Dragon Financial, we have 60 collective years of experience in the mortgage market, and my colleague Karen Ferguson has some 26 years of underwriting experience under her belt, which has led to us being able to help many people who had failed to get a mortgage elsewhere. Now, whilst we can’t guarantee that every case will end in a great result, for people who have nowhere to go for this kind of specialist advice, we offer a proper service dealing with a full range of specialist lenders who do want to help if at all possible. For those people who still have either an interest-only mortgage and have no way of repaying the capital to the lender or if you are retired and have no way of getting out of an awkward borrowing position, don’t despair over the matter. Give us a call and we’ll look into it for you at no cost to yourself and so for the sake of a phone call, you may well be able to solve the problem.
This year has been both strange and momentous for us here at Dragon Financial in that on one hand, we’ve been working throughout this whole pandemic, which has been testing to say the least, whilst our business levels have been very high and consistent, mainly due to the specialist nature of what we do and the results we have achieved for clients. So, welcome to 2021 and make sure you call us if you have any mortgage or borrowing issue that needs resolving. 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 are the numbers you need and we’ll happily attend to your enquiries. So stay safe and have happy year ahead. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545 / 07768 418308

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
As if to spite Covid-19, 2020 generally was a good gardening year with the weather being right for the seasons with bumper crops all round. Unfortunately our popular garden visits and meetings had to be cancelled. Our Stores well compensated for this providing a safe service to our members, and probably a few others, so that we could take refuge in our gardens and allotments during the long days of the ‘lockdown’. Many thanks again to our ‘Fab Four’ who kept the show on the road. Having received Covid-19 grants made available to charitable organisations we have made substantial donations to KPC Youth for extensive developments of their facilities, to Tools for Self Reliance for a new shelving system and improved workshop ventilation, to the local RNLI for a new weather station providing improved safety information to the general public, to the local NCI for improvements to their WiFi links and to SPLICE Child & Family Project helping local families in need. Pledges of financial help have also been made to Porthcawl First Responders for a new defibrillator, to Sandville Trust for a replacement Portakabin for their Charity Shop and to the Sea Cadets who are presently homeless. Best wishes for 2021. Stay safe. Frank Fulgoni
January is the beginning of the gardening year, a time for fresh starts, renewed energy (hopefully) and good plans for the year ahead (in the garden as well as life!) Jobs this month are mainly keeping things trim and tidy although it’s the ideal time to plant bare root roses, shrubs, hedging and ornamental trees, as long as the ground isn’t frozen If it is frozen or even frosty, stay off your lawn otherwise when it thaws your footmarks will show up as yellow patches where the grass has been damaged making more work! If we do have snow (ugh!) be sure to shake or brush it off your hedging and shrubs, snow is very heavy, and though it looks pretty it can snap branches and splay the tops of hedging; not so pretty! Don’ forget to deadhead your pansies, bless them, so you • Grass Cutting can have lots more of these • Hedge Trimming cheerful little flowers, lovely! • Tree Services • Turfing Did you know if you press • Decorative Gravel mistletoe into the bark of an • Fencing apple tree you can establish your own mistletoe plants, lots of lovely kisses next Christmas! ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Hope you all had a great Christmas – OK, I’m being sarcastic! I suppose, like me, you made the most of it, plenty of Scotch eggs and Stella. It really doesn’t make sense to me, some of these lockdown measures, especially pubs being closed. A lot won’t ever open their doors again, sadly. Normally in January I look into my crystal ball to highlight gigs, tours and festivals that we can look forward to in the coming months. However, not even Mystic Meg knows what the future holds. Porthcawl musician/songwriter and all-round good guy Ed Rees hasn’t let the lockdown prevent him from being productive. His band, One Time Alive, have already released their second album entitled “Big Blue and the Bubble” which I haven’t heard yet. But if it’s anything like the single and video called “Tell Me Who You’re Coming For”, it’s going to be a cracker. The album is available on all major platforms, and check out the video on YouTube. In the meantime, if you do have any local music news, let me know. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW The one thing that I particularly enjoy when editing a film is putting together the sound track. Most commercially made films, whether for the cinema or television, have multiple tracks consisting of recorded dialogue or narrative, continuous sound effects, spot effects and music. These tracks are laid down during the edit, and carefully synchronised, and finally mixed in the dubbing theatre. I usually aim to work with eight tracks, but some productions use a lot more. Putting a sound track together is a highly creative process in itself, and one that should aim to be as unobtrusive as possible. When I made “The Restoration of Sker House”, it was hard enough just taking the camera to every part of the scaffold structure, never mind a sound recorder. There are only two shots in the entire film that had sound recorded at the time of filming. The rest were re-created afterwards, in an elaborate process, which required me to record building tools in use, the handling of materials and footsteps. My little studio was like a miniature building site. Every effect had to be synced up afterwards – the observant viewer will notice that a few of them come in a bit early or late! TIDES
AN END TO PEN Y BONT SLSC’S 2020
High Tide: Larger Number (m)
Low Tide: Lower Number (m)
2021
JAN FEB
As 2020 comes to a close, Pen y Bont SLSC are grateful that we’ve had some form of winter training in the pool over the past couple of months, because it seemed unlikely that pool training would restart at all in 2020 in the midst of the first lockdown. Socially distanced pool training has been a great way for members to catch up and see friends in a safe environment. It is a shame that we have missed so much over the course of the year, but hopefully by the summer of 2021 we will be able to get back to the training and patrolling on the beach, and possibly even competitions too. If you would like to support us this Christmas and onwards, through no cost to yourself, please use this Amazon Smile link: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ch/1048638-0 to do your shopping. The first time you use it you’ll have to select the club as your primary charity, and after that it will default donations to us every time you use Amazon Smile. Finally, we want to wish all our members, fellow surf lifesavers, and those who support us, a happy New Year. Meriel Clode
