CÔR BRO OGWR’S CHRISTMAS CONCERT

Côr Bro Ogwr’s Christmas concert was held at All Saints Church, Porthcawl on Saturday, 10th December. On a very seasonal evening the church rang out with Christmas music including John Rutter’s Angels’ Carol, Carol y Seren by Gareth Glyn, and a beautiful Christmas cantata by Cecilia McDowall, Christmas Natus Est which incorporated traditional songs: Personent Hodie, Gaudete, Infant Holy, Infant Lowly and Angelus ad Virginem. The audience also had the opportunity to join in with favourite carols and were in fine voice, de-spite the cold! The choir was under the expert baton of its Musical Director, Ben Pinnow, and was accompanied by Benjamin Teague on the organ and Angharad Edwards on harp We are eager to recruit new singers at any time - all voices and all ages. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings, 7.00 - 9.00 pm, in Tabernacle Church, Derwen Road, Bridgend. Practice for our spring concert starts on Wednesday, 4th January. Please come and join us; no auditions required!

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Hope you all had a great Xmas. I must say I was really disappointed at our town Porthcawl yet again: there was no official turning on of the Xmas lights. They had a Victorian theme, which was good throughout the day, and then it was like a ghost town at 4pm. The kids want to see Santa coming through, with a countdown at the bandstand in John Street. About four years ago there must have been two thousand people there, where they did it with Bridge FM, a stage and live music. It really is sad for this town. On the music front, it’s all roads leading to Trecco Bay on 3rd to 5th February 2023 (Friday to Sunday) for Planet Rock’s Winter’s End Festival. Many of the country’s top rock bands will be there and Porthcawl/Bridgend’s own next big thing, “Last Flight To Pluto”, are on the main stage on Saturday 6th, so get your tickets now as the Planet Rock Festivals tend to sell out very fast! Keep your music news coming and I’ll give you a plug.

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

At this time of year, we often think of settling down in the long dark evenings to watch a nice film, and the Christmas season should always be good for a few classics. This often prompts me to ask myself, what really makes a classic film? After all, we each have our own individual likes and dislikes – some people like myself prefer old films, others only enjoy contemporary productions. Regular readers of this column probably know that I have a liking for British films, especially those of the 1940s and 1950s, but

this month I would like to pay my respects to that fine American actor, James Stewart. There is something about the characters he plays that makes him compulsively watchable. I saw him in “It’s A Wonderful Life” recently, and it was so hard to convince myself that he was only acting. But more incredible still was his role in “No Highway In The Sky” (1951), playing eccentric scientist Theodore Honey investigating metal fatigue in a new British airliner at Farnborough. If you want to watch a true master at work, look for it on YouTube, and you will be rewarded with Marlene Dietrich as well.
