SEASIDE STEPS

BRIDGEND AGAINST HOLIDAY HUNGER

Dear Editor, The letter by Mr John Jenkins in the June issue of ‘seaside news’ certainly highlights the possible dangers for the problem of algae contamination on the new seaside steps at Porthcawl. Mr Jenkins also provides interesting and positive suggestions for the control and use of the contaminant as well as sensible ideas for warning the general public of the dangers. Having recently visited the seafront and seen the level of contamination for myself I would have to agree that it is extremely unsightly and the dangers are very real. While sitting at a booth on the front and sipping my coffee it came to mind that a faster and permanent solution to the problem of removing the slime on the seafront could be achieved if BCBC called CoastBusters! Lynne Hendra, Port Talbot

Dear Editor, I am writing to let your readers know about a new charity that’s been set up locally to support children who may go hungry during the school holidays. Bridgend Against Holiday Hunger aims to provide children with nutritious food and fun activities during the school holidays. We’re doing this as research shows families who usually rely on free school meals need to find an extra £30 to £40 for each child every week during the holidays, money they may not be able to afford. To get our ambition off the ground, we are looking for volunteers who can spare a few hours to support our schemes and local businesses that may be willing to donate food or funds to help us. Your readers can get involved by emailing us via bridgendholidayfoodscheme@gmail.com or by liking our Facebook page – Bridgend Against Holiday Hunger. We believe that no child should go hungry in the school holidays and we hope that with your readers’ support we can put a stop to holiday hunger in Bridgend. Kerry-Lynne Pyke Bridgend Against Holiday Hunger

HOLOCAUST ARTICLE Dear Editor, I was very interested in your report in the June Seaside News of the talk of Mrs Eva Clarke to Brynteg Comprehensive School about the Holocaust. The history of the Holocaust must never be forgotten. Apart from many Jews who suffered in the concentration camps, there were other groups, including gypsies, political prisoners, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. This group was unique. The Nazis gave them a piece of paper sign to abandon their faith, and then they could be free, but at the end of the war there were thousands of them in the camps. Hundreds of their young men were executed for refusing to be in Hitler’s war machine. “Love your enemies” (The Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5:44). C Brown, Porthcawl

KENFIG NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE

Dear Editor, Most of you will have heard of, or visited Kenfig National Nature Reserve, a special area of conservation (SAC) and site of special scientific interest (SSSI). It is recognised as one of the most important sites for wildlife in Europe, home to extremely Dear Editor, rare species like the Fen Orchid, Great Crested Newt and Hairy Six months have passed since the 2018 Porthcawl Christmas Dragonfly. Morning Swim and we thought we’d post an update to let you In December, the current leaseholders, Bridgend County Borough know that with your support an incredible Council, will relinquish their management of KNNR when their £17,000 (yes, seventeen thousand pounds!) was raised for lease ends. Despite BCBC declaring their intention to end their charity at the 2018 Swim! management over 8 years ago, there has been no announcement Prostate Cymru were the headline charity and their President, from the landlords, the Kenfig Corporation Trust, naming a David Brace OBE, was delighted to receive a cheque for £7,000 suitable successor. With just 6 months left before this occurs, it on their behalf at our presentation night in the Hi Tide. is worrying that the Trust is still in the negotiation stages with The 23 other beneficiaries, all locally based organisations that do an interested party. Surely, the more time allowed for BCBC and so much to support our community were also represented. any new leaseholder to work together for a smooth transition, Work will soon be underway to ensure the 2019 Swim is bigger the better? and better than ever so watch this space over the coming weeks. I have set up a Facebook group called ‘Protect Kenfig Nature On behalf of the Christmas Swim Committee - THANK YOU Reserve’ to highlight the precarious situation our nature reserve TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED THE 2018 EVENT - we is currently in. The group is a positive force and can help keep look forward to seeing you all again this year! A full list of the all who are interested up to date on the current situation. If you’d like to help and can spare some time, please contact AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN us via social media or email christmasswim@gmail.com Dear Editor, As a residents of Newton Porthcawl my wife and I are often PRAISE FOR POW HOSPITAL using the COOP and Greggs in New road for shopping and a cup of coffee. Dear Editor, We have noticed lately that the car park in front of the shops is I am writing in respect to the excellent care I received recently often completely full to the extent that cars are parked directly from the Endoscopy Department, POW, where I underwent a not in front of the entrances including on the yellow box sections very pleasant procedure. However, from the moment I entered of the exit. Also cars are entering from the opposite direction, the Department to the time I walked out, I received the very which should be exit only. This is likely to lead to an accident best of care. From the cheery porter, who gave me instructions, especially as the peak season for Trecco Bay is coming up and & the lovely volunteer who gave me tea & biscuits at the end, the increase in traffic is inevitable. through to the brilliant Consultant & his Nursing Staff, I was I suggest a clearly marked NO ENTRY sign be posted near the treated with the utmost respect; regard for privacy; kindness; Greggs exit to prevent cars coming in the opposite way, & a great deal of empathy, whilst hearing much humour & Clare & Graham Pearce, Porthcawl hilarious conversation, throughout the procedure. A great deal is talked about, concerning the NHS, but I have nothing but praise for that particular Department. I should add, that, as a •Rubbish removal service (Waste carrier license cbdu1736) retired Nurse, I was very much on the lookout for faults, but •Fast and reliable house clearance specialists experienced none. Well done, & thank you to you all. •Quality unwanted items bought S.M. Youlten, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH Peter James ‘Dead at First Sight’ A man waits at London Airport for Ingrid Ostermann, the love of his life, to arrive. Across the Atlantic, a retired NYPD cop waits in a bar in Florida’s Key West for his first date with the lady who is, without question, his soulmate. The two men are about to discover they’ve been scammed out of almost every penny they have—and that neither woman exists. Meanwhile, a wealthy divorcée plunges, in suspicious circumstances, from an apartment block in Munich. In the same week, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is called to investigate the suicide of a woman in Brighton, that is clearly not what it seems. As his investigations continue, a handsome Brighton motivational speaker comes forward. He’d discovered his identity is being used to scam 11 different women, online. Roy Grace realizes he is looking at the tip of an iceberg. A global empire built on clever, cruel internet scams and the murder of anyone who threatens to expose them. 16 | seaside news

BUY A BOOK, SAVE A DOG

One of the joys of being an author is interacting with fellow authors in our vibrant online community. Around five years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Paulette Mahurin and reading her books. Paulette writes in a number of genres, but her main focus is historical fiction and stories based on intolerance. In novels such as To Live Out Loud, The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap, The Day I Saw the Hummingbird, The Seven Year Dress, Irma’s Endgame and A Different Kind of Angel she has tackled a range of topics including: homophobia, racism, anti-Semitism and women’s abuse. Paulette’s books are immaculately researched, beautifully written and highlight the true soul of humanity. A native of Southern California, where she lives with her husband and two dogs, she has a Master’s Degree in Science from UCLA. Paulette’s books are a great read. However, added to that she donates all her profits to rescue dogs from kill shelters. To date, Paulette has rescued well over 2,200 dogs. A remarkable achievement. So, if you are looking for a great read this summer and would like to rescue a dog into the bargain, please check out Paulette Mahurin’s books. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Paulette-Mahurin/e/ B008MMDUGO Hannah Howe Author of the international bestselling Sam Smith Mystery Series https://hannah-howe.com

Local history SPITFIRE TROPHY LANDS AT PORTHCAWL MUSEUM The Spitfire Society was founded in March 1984 by the late Group Captain David Green. Its original purpose was to link people throughout the world whose lives had been effected by the legendary Spitfire airplane. Since achieving the status of a nationally Registered Charity, the Society has widened its horizons. It now supports the interest of the many aviation enthusiasts who wish to support its aims. Spitfire Wings, Flights and Roundels are groups of members both in the UK and overseas, who meet socially twice a year. Each group decides what it wants to call itself, whether it is a Roundel, Flight or Wing. The Porthcawl Roundel group who meet twice a year were delighted to be given custody of the FLT. LT Tim Hamer memorial trophy FLT. LT. Hamer, flew Spitfires with 66 and 124 Squadrons between 1942 and 1943 and the trophy, created in his memory by his wife Grace and daughter Fiona was presented in 2014 to the Spitfire society Each year the trophy is passed into the care of one of the societies Roundels or Wings for a 12 month period and the Porthcawl Roundel group are pleased to announce that the trophy will be displayed in the RAF section of Porthcawl Museum. Hywel Guilford of the Porthcawl Roundel Group asked the museum if they would hold the trophy on behalf of his group for the next 12 months and the offer was gratefully accepted by the museum’s Rob Taylor who in return offered the group the use of the museum’s facilities for their next meeting. ROMANCE AT ROF 53, BRIDGEND On 3rd September 1939, after the service at Gilgal Church, 16 yrs old Alan Walker walked down to the Esplanade, where he heard that war had been declared at 11am. On leaving school the following July, he applied for a vacancy at the Royal Ordinance Factory No 53 Bridgend. On interview, 30th September, he sat the Civil Service exam, signed the Official Secrets Act and began work as a Junior Clerical Assistant in the Wages Department the next day. Within two years he would become, and meet another Section Leader, Betty Fisher. Daily, Alan would catch the bus, sometimes a double decker, from Griffin Park, which picked up many others on route. The Cordite night shift workers were paid every Thursday night, and Alan recounts how, having prepared their pay, that he would be picked up by one of the‘Tilly” (Utility) buses, that operated within the ROF site, and driven out to the Cordite buildings. Alan also joined the ROF Home Guard, and one of his group’s weekly duties was to guard Tondu House at night. On 1st October 1942 Alan was called up into the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers and served in the Middle East. Having corresponded by letter for three years, he married Betty on 20th February 1946. Ceri joseph (daughter)

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM As part of her mayors charity fund Cllr Nora Clarke presented Porthcawl Museum Chairman Paul Joseph with a donation from the Fund. Cllr Clarke commented “ I would like to thank everyone involved in the Porthcawl Museum and Historical Society for taking up the challenge of the Old Police Station. I know it’s been a lot of hard work and presumably worry but it’s fantastic to see what your hard work has achieved. Congrats to you all and very, very well done. You should be very proud of your achievements. When everyone comes together great things happen. “ Paul Joseph took the opportunity to thank Porthcawl Town Council and Cllr Clarke for all its vital support over the last few years. He also informed Cllr Clarke that since the museum reopening in April which followed extensive refurbishment that with the help of its volunteers it has increased its opening hours and is now open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and not closed during the lunch time. He would also like to encourage people to visit the refitted museum shop, which carries a wide range of gifts and souvenirs many of which are unique to the museum. David Swidenbank

We have 3 large cars to use every day which will take the children on trips to Dyffryn Gardens, Warren Mill, Ape Sanctuary and St Fagons to name but a few. For those who wish to chill, there is a reading area and a huge sofa to snuggle and watch the latest films. If you need childcare this summer for under 12’s, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 771285 The Burrows Daycare Nursery (Porthcawl)

Children, families, governors and staff had a great time walking to Pen y fan recently. It was a huge challenge and although we got hit by the weather, it didn’t dampen our spirits! Year 5 and 6 also did their best to impress Alan Sugar as they became young business experts. Each group was given £10, which they spent on stock. The aim was to maximise profits and become the champion entrepreneurs. The children had great fun learning, which is, after all, what it’s all about! We’re all very excited about our Llangrannog residential trip. Year 5 and 6 can’t wait to quad bike, ski, abseil, go-cart and horse ride - to name but a few. Our new extension and foyer area have now been completed and are smart addition to our growing school. Weekly Family Play sessions are currently running for children who will begin Nursery in September. If you still haven’t decided upon your child’s Nursery, please feel free to pop in for a visit but be quick – we only have 3 places left! We are a happy, friendly, family - focused primary school with small classes and huge grounds. We prioritise wellbeing, have excellent standards and are proud to be a Welsh Government Green Category School for the fourth year running. If you’re interested in joining us, please ring me on the number below to arrange a visit. Jo Rowley Head teacher 01656 815660

CYNFFIG NEWS It’s always a challenging yet exciting time of year when Year 11 and 13 sit their final exams and think of pastures new. We are extremely proud of all their efforts and wish them the very best. We look forward now to celebrating their achievements in August. Congratulations too to our school choir and band that have had an extremely busy term performing at our Summer Showcase, Party on the Pitch in Kenfig Hill and Beyond Words a concert involving 1000 voices at the Motor Point Arena Cardiff. The event described as a ‘life-changing experience for all’ truly was an inspiring experience for our pupils who sang their hearts out accompanied by a full orchestra. Year 9 pupils too have experienced something new when they underwent life as a Marine. Pupils were definitely put through their paces on agility courses, speedboats and fitness tests with the Royal Marines. And finally this term we have welcomed our prospective Year 7 pupils who have enjoyed making potions with the Science department and facing challenges led by our year 7 MAT group. We wish everyone a happy and safe summer and look forward to seeing you all fresh and rested for September.

ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL I was delighted to welcome the Minister for Education, Kirsty Williams, to school in June. It was a great privilege to show her around the school and she visited a number of departments including the Welsh Baccalaureate and Music. The Q & A session with a group of Year 8 & 9 girls was really inspirational and gave a great insight into what it takes to become a successful woman in politics. You may have been following with interest, the successes our Young Enterprise Team “Archways” have had with their scented revision cards. I am proud to announce that that they have gone on to win the Welsh Company Programme Final and will represent Wales in the UK Final in London before the end of term. Good luck to the team and a special thank you to the business advisors from SSE for the support and guidance they have given to our pupils. Year 7 are very busy raising money for the First Give Campaign, which this year is supporting MacMillan Cancer Charity. There are a few exciting events before the end of term, including a two-day transition with Year 6, sports day and the Catholic Pupil Profile activities days. It only remains to say farewell to our Year 13 students and wish them all the best as they go off to university and into the world of work. I look forward to celebrating their time as students of Archbishop McGrath by joining them at their sixth form prom on Friday 19th July. Angela Keller Head teacher

School reports GOOD DIABETES CARE IN SCHOOL AWARD We are very pleased to inform you that Pîl Primary School has once again been awarded the Good Diabetes Care in School Award. The award celebrates schools that deliver good care and support to children with Type 1 Diabetes. We first won this award three years ago and at the time we were the first school in Wales to qualify. This time we are one of only three schools in Wales to qualify for the award. The “Criw Cymraeg” have been sharing ideas of how to create a display in the reception area of the school, which reflects a contemporary vision of Wales. Establishing a visual Welsh ethos is one aspect of the “Cymraeg Campus” Bronze award and will be a new focus for the “Criw Cymraeg.” Thank you to the digital leaders who have created posters of Welsh apps to display around the school. We look forward to the digital leaders showing the classes how to use these apps over the coming weeks. As part of their topics ‘’Land Ahoy’ and ‘Little Explorers’, Year 1 and 2 visited Techniquest, Cardiff on the Tuesday before half term. The children enjoyed experimenting using the different exhibits and had fun watching ‘At the Seaside’, an interactive map reading show. A great day was had by all! Pil Primary School

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Another exhaustive examination season was completed successfully and we have now said goodbye to our Year 13’s and some Year 11’s who have left us to go on to other exciting things. We await their exam results with anticipation and wish them the very best of luck with their chosen paths. Thanks to everyone involved and we look forward to the Leavers’ Ball at Miskin Manor on 28th June. Year 12 however have returned to school after their AS exams and have had an exceptionally busy time. We held a UCAS Induction Day with the help of Dewi Phillips, Schools & Colleges Liaison Officer at Abertstwyth University and a Parents’ Information Evening at school. Pupils have already started thinking about personal statements and the process is underway to select the new Head Team for next year. At the beginning of July, we look forward to welcoming 32 members of the U3A who have kindly volunteered their services again this year in giving interview practice to Year 12 pupils in readiness for their UCAS applications next term. We are so grateful for your ongoing commitment to our school. The end of term will see the annual Lavender Walk for Cancer and a local beach clean as well as the Maths’ Department trip to Techniquest, Activities Day, Sports Day, more Transition Days, the BTEC show and our Tennis Tournament. AFON Y FELIN PRIMARY The children at Afon y Felin Primary have had an eventful few weeks. Our Parents and Friends Association worked extremely hard to organise a whole school trip to The Dinosaur Park Tenby. The children (and staff!) had a fantastic time and we’re very thankful for having such a great PFA who help our school by raising money throughout the year. We’re now looking forward to our school summer fayre on 27th June at 3:00pm: please feel free to come along to support the school. As part of their animal based topics, the Foundation Phase have enjoyed hatching their own chicks and making scientific observations as they grew. The children were filled with awe and wonder. Our Urdd Club children had the experience of attending the Urdd Eisteddfod, which was situated in the heart of Cardiff Bay in May. Our choir was successful in reaching the final stages and did us proud by being the only Welsh as a second language choir to partake in the Cerdd Dant. The children also created exceptional photography, designed Welsh themed electronic games, and created fun and unique puppets to enter into the Urdd competitions. We’re very proud of everyone who took part. Nigel Hughes Leader of Learning

SUMMER TERM AT ST CLARE’S It’s been another busy term at St Clare’s for children from Nursery to Sixth Form. Our first ever Nursery Graduation was a great success with proud parents and grandparents celebrating this important milestone in the children’s lives. Not a dry eye in the house! The 4-year olds looked so smart in their royal blue caps and gowns and showcased their Spanish skills by singing. Year 6 pupils are just back from Barcelona and about to go on another residential at Acorn Adventure with Year 5 pupils. Come along to our Summer Art Exhibition Evening on Thursday, 4th July showcasing stunning GCSE and A-Level pieces from our super talented Art & Design Department. Our Senior Transition Day is on 10th July. The Sixth Form at St. Clare’s boasts excellent results every year, and offers students the individual attention they need to be able to reach their full potential. Our June Open Day was a great success. If you missed it, but would still like to come and see what a St Clare’s education can do for your child, visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk or contact our friendly Admissions Team who will be available all through the summer holidays. Local news DÉJÀ VU

GET INSPIRED BY FOSTER CARERS

I have a strong sense of Déjà vu as I consider BCBC’s decision to cut subsidies for bus services in Porthcawl and Bridgend. It seems like only last week when residents fought to save these routes from closure. Sadly, BCBC only agreed to a 12-month deferral so here we are again facing the loss of key local bus routes. BCBC seems to be banking on the fact that these services will continue even without the subsidy but there is no guarantee and unless they pay their way, the smaller operators involved will pull the plug. The routes under threat include Nottage into Porthcawl and Danygraig into town. In Bridgend, it is the town to Oaklands Road via the life centre service that’s affected as well as the Maesteg Parc to Maesteg service. These buses are vital for many residents who do not have a car and who will be cut off from their doctors, dentists, banks, shops and social activities at a stroke. There is also a knock-on effect on town centres like Bridgend, Maesteg and Porthcawl if people cannot easily get to them. An unintended consequence of scrapping bus subsidies could be more shop closures.

I always feel really inspired when I hear the stories of local foster carers whose actions are helping to change young people’s lives for the better. So I really enjoyed this year’s Foster Care Fortnight campaign which shared the experiences of some of those kind hearted individuals in an attempt to encourage others to foster too. Take a look at www.bridgendfostercare.wales to find out more. Foster carers come from all walks of life, just like the children who need to be looked after. If you’ve ever considered fostering I would definitely recommend you speaking to the Bridgend Foster Care team at Bridgend County Borough Council for some confidential and friendly advice. There are several fostering schemes available to reflect the variety of backgrounds and needs of the individual looked after children. For example, supported lodgings helps young people aged 16 to 21 to make the transition to adulthood. Whatever your situation, there’ll be a scheme to match the type of care you can offer, and you’ll receive a whole range of ongoing support from our experienced team as well as advice from our seasoned foster carers. To find out more, please call the team on 01656 642674, or email bridgendfostercare@ bridgend.gov.uk.

FORD PLANT TO CLOSE Ford’s announcement to close the Bridgend plant is devastating news for our community. We knew that there were plans to reduce the size of the workforce, but the total closure was a complete surprise to everyone. It is vital that all workers and their families are fully supported through this difficult time. I have met with the Secretary of State to seek assistance for everyone affected, including businesses in the supply chain that will also feel the knock on effects of this decision. There could be around 12,000 jobs at risk in the wider workforce involved with Ford. Words may provide little comfort at the moment; however, I would like to assure all of the excellent workers at Ford that along with Bridgend Council, and Unions Carwyn and I are working with the Business Secretary and the Welsh Government, to ensure people receive sound advice about redundancy payments. The workforce at Ford have done everything asked of them, so it is only right that they receive long term support and training to help them secure new opportunities and employment. Bridgend Ford has been at the heart of our community since 1977 and although the plant maybe closing, generations of workers will continue to be a source of pride for us all. NEW WATER SPORTS CENTRE TAKING SHAPE I recently enjoyed a tour of the site of the new water sports centre in Rest Bay and I predict a stampede to be among the first to enjoy a coffee there! The views from the first floor will be exceptional. The centre will provide a base for water sports clubs as well as a café/bistro upstairs, an ice cream kiosk downstairs, toilet facilities, showers, changing cubicles, a function room and more. The centre is being built thanks to £1.5m of EU funds as part of a Visit Wales programme to create 13 must-see tourist destinations across the country. It is being built by Cardiff firm Henstaff Construction and is scheduled to be completed in August. At the time of writing, I can’t yet announce who the tenants will be as lease agreements are currently under discussion, but hopefully an announcement will be made soon. However, I can say that the tendering process was based on criteria primarily concerning quality, and that the successful applicants have excellent track records. I’m sure that local residents will be pleased and are looking forward to the completion of this iconic new development that will further establish Porthcawl’s status as a leading coastal destination. SPORTS PITCHES CONSULTATION Sports pitches and pavilions are hugely important facilities in our communities, but the current way that we provide them simply isn’t sustainable. On average, the income received from charging users only makes up 20 to 25 per cent of the actual costs of maintaining the facilities. So we’re typically providing a financial subsidy of up to 80 per cent at a time when we need to make savings of £36.4m over the next four years due to reduced funding from central government. During last year’s budget consultation, 60 per cent of respondents said they’d support an increase in charges for sports pitches and pavilions if it helped protect other essential frontline council services. We’ve been running a further consultation to discover the impact that an increase in hire costs would have on local sports and physical activity. How palatable would an increase in costs really be? Are there more clubs out there who would be willing to consider Community Asset Transfers to take on the running of facilities on either a short-term management agreement or a longer-term lease? We need a complete picture before making any difficult decisions - please visit www.bridgend.gov.uk/consultation by 10 July to have your say. STANDING UP FOR FORD WORKERS Ford workers at the company’s Bridgend Engine Plant were dealt a bitter blow last month when the company announced its intention to begin a consultation to close its Bridgend plant in September 2020. I watched the plant being built and the news is a blow to the solar plexus of the town of Bridgend. There was no warning. For forty years, the workers did what was asked of them and this is the way they have been repaid. I have continually sought assurances from the Economy and Transport Minister that all that can be done is being done and that the Welsh Government will look to provide a future for them and for the town. The workers are also worried about their pensions and I have asked the Welsh Government to look at this. I welcome the decision by the Welsh Government to set up a Taskforce to work with national and local partners to help find a sustainable and long-term solution for the plant and I will do all I can to assist the Taskforce. I certainly won’t give up fighting for those workers and working with the trade unions, but we must be prepared for all eventualities. CARWYN JONES AM AM for Bridgend

Poets corner I WILL FORGET YOU

You’re in my head today You’ll still be there tomorrow But in a few years from now You will no longer be the source of my sorrow You were the first to make me cry Yet you never saw my pain But it doesn’t matter now Because it will never happen again The shadow of lies that you spoke Were cleared with the pain of reality They say that ignorance is bliss Yet I would never reverse that very first kiss Although I have fallen so very hard for you And paid the price by allowing your deception I truly loved our time together And it is these memories that will last forever Up until this day we live You are still oblivious to the heart you have broken I will never allow you to see my soul You will never understand the virtue you stole And so now I take comfort In knowing that Karma is a bigger bitch than me You may not feel the wrath of revenge today But one day I promise that you will pay Perhaps you will find the one And she will do you so very wrong For it is the lies you told and fake love you gave That will follow you right up until your grave. Tuesday Turner, Kenfig Hill

WHEN YOU’RE FEELING ALL ALONE

When you’re feeling all alone, Look up and follow the sun, Take a breath of air and feel the heat, Before the day is done. When you’re feeling all washed out, With the stresses of the day, Look up and search for the light of the moon, To help you on your way. When you’re feeling you cannot cope, Look inside and think of me, Your Angel hasn’t gone far you know, I’m inside your heart, you’ll see. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

THOSE WHO WANDER

One day when walking my daughter’s dog Without a clue where I was going I followed a footpath that Took me through fields and forest Until the path began to climb and climb up hill I came upon a bench upon which, A plaque remembering three friends long ago Who climbed the hill everyday To work in the mine, and back! I sat on their monument, for a moment It brought a tear to my eye Then of the miners I thought and smiled I just had to climb some more Steps were cut into the hill I counted them 1,2,3… I got to the top after 89! And there like a dream And wonderful surprise A view to behold the eyes! And another bench yet, In memory of John… “Where he once stood Now others may sit” On returning my daughter enquired “Where have you been?” and grandchildren “We thought you had got lost?” “No!” I replied “Those who wander are never lost” I could see right across The Vale By the way - 360 degrees Sue Waters, Newton Burrows, Porthcawl

HOPE

Moments dragging weary through the darkness of the night Anxious thoughts distressing Pains relentless pressing How can midnight darkness ever yield to dawning bright? But eyelids now are closing And cockcrow finds me dosing While morning creeps unseen to bring the dawn’s first ray And I’m alive, alive to greet this glad new day. Centuries march weary through the tangle of the years Men ever turning, straying From their God and disobeying Unheeding of his promise through the prophets and the seers Yet some pray on, believing. Frail arms reach out, receiving A maiden bringing forth a Child to us, yes, God’s own Son They see him, touch him, hold him, for Emmanuel has come Millennia have come and gone since Jesus last drew near And our hearting on, believing And our eyes grow bright, perceiving That this same Lord will come again to conquer every fear And so we’re watching, praying And we’re still rejoicing, saying That as surely as his coming in the fullness of the year, And as surely as the dawning will the Son of Man appear. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

MIRRORS

Mirrors sit in silent judgment, Silvered windows on the wall. Rows of flat and blank expressions, Form a glacial judge and jury. They steal my image, twist it, turn it, Reflect it back to me, reversed. Is this how other people see me? This strange reversal of the truth? I feel them judging my appearance, The hair, the clothes, the red-rimmed eyes. But they can’t see the pain inside me, Can’t see beyond my war-paint smile. So I breathe on them to blind them, Misty breathe on ice-chilled lens. Release my image from their prison, Slip unseen, into the night. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

Mickey Mouse is a fun four-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He is a friendly lad who prefers human company and especially loves a fuss and cuddle. He has a playful nature and loves throwing his toys up in the air. Mickey is best suited as the only pet in the home and would prefer walking in quiet, less doggy populated areas. Mickey Mouse is looking for a home with experienced dog owners who can continue his training. He is house trained and travels well in the car and he is fine to be left for a few hours. Children in the home will need to be over 14 years and over. Canine Carer Phil says “Mickey Mouse is a delightful chap with oodles of personality. He is a charmer and will tug at your heart strings.” For more information on Mickey Mouse, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The Good Samaritan is perhaps the most familiar of Jesus’ parables. People who’ve never read the parable routinely use the words, ‘Good Samaritan.’ We all know what this parable means, right? It means help people who need help. Be like the Good Samaritan who took the time to see that the beaten man got the care he needed, doesn’t it? Actually, there is something new here. Those first listeners would have found putting the words ‘good’ and ‘Samaritan’ together rather disturbing. To them, Samaritans were bad people. He’s the wrong person. The ‘right’ people all walked on by without stopping. The wrong person stops and helps. Maybe the Parable of the Good Samaritan isn’t as predictable as we thought? Maybe it’s not just, ‘Be a good neighbour’. Maybe it’s: ‘when you and I didn’t deserve or expect help, help came. Unexpected. Undeserved. Sort of like being saved by, of all people, a Samaritan. Because you have been graciously and surprisingly helped, be gracious to others. God Bless Rev Lewis Rees, Nottage Chapel

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES This month I’d like to briefly talk about the resurrection of Jesus. Obviously one may contend that the resurrection of Jesus actually happened, but there seems to be plenty of evidence for it. One is how the disciples in the bible were changed in their beliefs about the resurrection. One author said, “The apostles did not blindly accept as truth the resurrection of Jesus. When Mary Magdalene first saw the resurrected Lord, she went to the apostles, but they did not believe her”. However, Jesus later appeared to the disciples which they claim really happened. Paul the apostle also claimed that Jesus had appeared to him and also five hundred at one time and that some were still alive when he wrote about it, meaning that if anyone wanted to check out his story they could easily ask those present at the time (1 Corinthians 15 v 5 – 6). Also, there was something radical in the way they shared the message. Most of these people mentioned were actually martyred for what they came to believe in. They were so convinced in what they saw they died testifying about it. I believe these guys really did see the resurrected Jesus, which obviously means that he is alive today and one day coming back. We are now halfway through the calendar year, so maybe time to do a catch up of some of the many classes that hire our various halls and offices. Earlier this month our karate class was pleased to receive a donation from the Pyle Community Council to enable the group to buy more equipment for their group. They meet every Tuesday evening in the Talbot from 6 p.m. til 7.30 p.m. Our photograph shows Cllr Mike Kearn, Chair of the Pyle CC presenting a cheque to David (Toumba) Thomas, along with members of the group. Our Sewing Group has established itself in the Aberbaiden office, and meet every Tuesday from 10.30 til 3.30 p.m. Anyone can attend, for the full five hours, or for a shorter length of time, and it would help if they brought their sewing machine etc with them. The class charges £10 a session. And of course, Claire, who has a beauty salon, is always ready to give you a pedicure, reflexology or massage, to make you feel and look good. Club features THAT’S ALL FOLKS

It was an evening of fellowship tinged with sadness at a farewell meal at the Atlantic Hotel, Porthcawl as team readers and listeners of Ogwr Talking Newspapers Association (OTNA) marked the closing of the service that had run for over forty years. Six rotating teams of four readers had brought the news to life weekly for those with sight problems and had kept them abreast of news from local newspapers - initially via reel-to-reel tape and subsequently through cassette tape and, more recently, with compact discs. Over the years they kept abreast of technology - recording and duplicating equipment was purchased accordingly - and each week, the dedicated teams would first record over an hour’s worth of news items and then mass-duplicate their readings and send individual copies to their listeners. Ogwr Talking Newspapers (originally Mid Glamorgan Talking Newspapers) was founded in 1976 when David Philpot, his late wife, Nancy and Cliff Lamburn arranged an inaugural meeting with interested parties and- with no experience, funding or equipment other than an ordinary domestic tape recorder – the scene was set for the forty years of service that followed. At one time OTNA had up to three hundred people in the area receiving tapes but more recently it had been noticed that numbers were gradually falling and the decision was made to curtail the service. So, for now, as some of the teams would say as they signed off, “ That’s all for now, folks, thank you and goodbye.” Ivor Williams Photo: David Philpot (Chairman) is middle of the front row with listeners John Morgan to David’s left on the photo and Geoff Hockridge to the right.

SEAQUEST NEWS Over the last month we’ve enjoyed some fantastic sessions on the beach with pupils from across Bridgend County; they’ve picked litter and created tally charts with their findings, made beautiful beach art, learnt about beach safety with the RNLI, and investigated the wildlife found in our rockpools and shoreline. Our half term Beach Discovery and Beachcraft sessions also went down a storm, as children from age 3 upwards came with their parents to learn about their surroundings, build dens, light fires, toast marshmallows and play games! We look forward to a busy couple of weeks of term before our summer schedule starts. Don’t forget to visit us at this year’s RNLI RescueFest either!

Club features £3K FOR CHARITIES FROM GOLF

COULD YOU BE A PUPPY RAISER FOR GUIDE DOGS CYMRU?

Porthcawl Lions Annual Golf Tournament was again a resounding success despite foul weather. Thanks to generous sponsors, stalwart golfers and helpers, funds were raised to enable 3 donations of a thousand pounds each to the Charities Sandville (see photo), Prostate Cymru and the Stroke Club. Cheques were presented by Mayor of Porthcawl, Cllr Graham Walter in company with Lions President Rhys Lewis and representatives of the organisations involved. Team winners were men; South Wales police and Ladies: Guttridge Florists. Sunday Carboot Sales at the Rugby Club (8.00ish to lunchtime), continue depending on the weather although the first July one is likely to be on the Saturday because of road closures for the big run. The Vintage Fayre on August 3rd is well in hand with lots of cars booked in. Potential stallholders contact Aileen on 784489.

Porthcawl couple Kate and Martin Robins are currently caring for their fourth guide dog puppy, a black Labrador named Cassie. It’s their job to introduce the pup to as many new sights and sounds as possible to prepare her for the working life ahead. They enjoy great support from Guide Dogs staff, plus puppy training classes for exchanging tips and ideas. After a year, it will be time to wave the pup goodbye as she moves on to “big school” to learn advanced guiding skills. “People ask how we can bear to give her up,” said Kate. “But from the day they arrive, you know that pup isn’t yours. You vow to give them the best care, and of course you miss them, but they have an important job to do, changing someone’s life.” Puppy raisers need time to spend with the puppy, a secure garden and access to a car. It’s good to include the puppy in your daily routine, visiting shops and garden centres, doing the school run, going on public transport and joining in family days. Guide Dogs supplies basic equipment and cover all veterinary and feeding expenses. To volunteer, email jaye.connelly@guidedogs.org.uk or ring 07468 711808.

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL

TRINITY CHURCH

In May we logged five incidents and monitored 13. Three incidents involved the use of our CCTV camera at Rest Bay. One such incident was the sighting of a yacht standing into danger at Kenfig Sands. Milford Haven Coastguard was able to see that the yacht was in trouble via our web link and both Porthcawl ILB and Mumbles AWLB were involved with towing the vessel safely back to Swansea. We logged 1,228 vessel movements during May, a figure more in line with numbers during the peak Summer period. We logged 261 commercial vessels - the highest number for one month since the station opened three years ago. Members of the public have become much more aware of the highly visible safety tow floats available at the tower and an increasing number of swimmers borrow them. They can be easily seen by boats in the area, making the activity much safer. Swimmers are also informing us of their plans for longer swims up to or down from Rest Bay and across to Ogmore. We recently exercised with Porthcawl RNLI and both organisations used the opportunity to hone their skills in collaboration, helping to make the local coastline a safer place. The next Messy Church will be held on July 21st. All children aged under 10 are welcome. There has been a change of time and it will now start at 3 and finish at 5pm. The activities include painting, arts and crafts, games, stories and songs. This is a free activity, which runs monthly. Full details of all our events and services are on our website and Facebook page. This includes details of future GAP activities, regular meetings and any Trinity Outings. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa

We send our biggest machine to date. We are grateful to Porthcawl Rotary Club who enabled us to send through TFSR Cymru a very large grit blaster, compressor and filter plant for removing rust. The machinery was originally a gift from South Hampshire Rotary Clubs to Tools for Self Reliance for their workshop in Southampton. Eventually it was surplus to requirement and offered to any group who could best use it. Through our group, it is now destined for the Mwanza workshops in Tanzania where TFSR Cymru have established a large tools refurbishing workshop and training centre. The workshop is supplied with unrefurbished tools. A shipping container will be sent with all equipment and tools sometime in the near future. It is fitting that the Rotary Club of Porthcawl have been happy to help with the continuity of this very worthwhile gift. Our picture shows the president Denzil Gould handing over a cheque, which was matched by our group here in Porthcawl. We are also grateful to Bob Twitty of Porthcawl Mobility Scooters who collected the machine from Southampton and later delivered it to TFSR Cymru depot in Crickhowell. We are currently preparing carpentry and mechanics kits, which are destined for Uganda in July. John Hanson Group Coordinator

RACING AT MARGAM PARK MODEL BOAT CLUB

The International One Metre (IOM) is the most popular RC Racing yacht in the World and is raced in over 30 Countries Worldwide. Popular in every Radio Sailing Club in the UK, there are currently over 1000 boats registered Nationwide. Finding boats to sail against is not a problem and a great deal of fun can be had, no matter what level of skill you wish to sail at. Here at the park, our fleet of One Metre boats is well established, with both amateur and professionally built boats taking to the water. The fleet is gradually expanding, resulting in close competitive racing. Whilst formal racing takes place on nominated weekends, the yachts can be seen on the lake on most club days where more informal ‘ racing and chasing’ is not uncommon Although Carbon fibre is allowed in the construction of the Fin and Rudder, construction of the hull must be of either wood or Glass fibre. This makes the class very popular for the amateur builder and most of the professional builders have plans and kits for home completion. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I have been acting in person in relation to my divorce and filed a petition on my husband’s adultery 3 months ago as I discovered that he had an affair with another woman 10 years ago. I found about the fling a year ago. We are still under the same roof at the moment. I am concerned as my Petition has been rejected at the Decree Nisi stage. Answer:I am sorry to learn of your husband’s affair and the shock of discovering this 10 years after the event. You can file for divorce if you can show to the Court that your marriage has broken down irretrievably on the fact of adultery and you have found it intolerable to live with your spouse. It appears that you have filed for Divorce roughly 9 months after you became aware of the relationship and this has presented you with a problem. Whilst the affair took place 10 years ago, the Court rules state that if you continue living under the same roof as your husband, you must file for Divorce within 6 months of becoming aware of the adultery otherwise you are deemed not to have found it intolerable living with your husband. Your Petition has ben rejected by the Judge as the Court requires you to confirm at Decree Nisi stage when you became aware of the adultery and whether you have continued living with your husband for over 6 months. Your option now is to file an amended Petition on the fact of his conduct. There will be a further court fee to pay and you are effectively starting from scratch. You should also not use the term adultery in your amended Divorce Petition but may wish to refer to the inappropriate relationship amongst your other reasons. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit then we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A cohabitation agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force - the agreement can say so. Even so, a cohabitation agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice. You must also be open about your individual financial positions when you enter into the agreement. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. If you wish to discuss this further then please contact us. THE RIGHTS OF STEP PARENTS Step families are the fastest growing family type in the UK. It is estimated that almost two million children are living in a two-parent family where one parent is not their own. Step-parents will often form a close bond with the child, and share responsibility for their day to day needs, particularly when the child is young. However, step-parents do not have legal standing for the child, and step-parent families are often overlooked in the drive to change our laws to reflect modern day society. Despite popular belief, a step-parent does not automatically acquire parental responsibility upon their marriage to or civil partnership with the child’s natural parent, or by assuming day to day responsibility for the child. A married step-parent can acquire parental responsibility by entering into a parental responsibility agreement signed by each person with parental responsibility. This can be difficult as one parent may refuse to sign. Alternatively the step parent can apply for a parental responsibility order. The court will consider various factors including the consent or otherwise of one or both natural parents, so, if one parent objects this can be difficult and such orders are not common. If parental responsibility is acquired in either way then it will not end if the step-parent were to separate, divorce or dissolve the civil partnership with the natural parent. A child will not inherit from their step-parent under the laws of intestacy, even if the step parent had parental responsibility. A step-parent will need to make a will to provide for a step child on their death, Despite step-parent families fast becoming the new norm within the wide range of family situations that now exist in modern family life, it seems step-parents still have limited rights, regardless of the responsibility they assume for a child’s day to day upbringing. PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL

Mynydd Cynffig WI met at our usual venue The Talbot Center Kenfig Hill 2 pm to 4.30 pm. The meeting was chaired by Christine with Enid our secretary. WI business discussed and minutes signed off. Our trip to Denman in July was finalised and our summer trip to Craig y Nos was discussed with our members and agreed it would be a good day out. The members entering items in the Glamorgan Federation Show in Cornelly in July were listed and forms filled in. Hears hoping we will do well, we have enjoyed entering and the categories this year have been varied. Our speaker this month was Angela Pucker from PAWS. She fetched her dog with her a lurcher crossed with a Irish wolfhound, he was very well behaved and her talk about the work PAWS do was very interesting. Next month we have Alan Thorne his topic Assassination of JFK Fact and fiction we all knew where we were when JFK died so his talk should be very interesting. You know where we will be on the 2nd Tuesday of July call in and have a cup of tea or coffee with us we’d love to meet you. Christine Callaghan

Hello readers, I think we have all very disappointed with the summer weather so far. I only hope it improves for some of our planned events. Inner Wheel will be having a Lucky dip £1 stall at the carnival again this year. It was very successful last year and the prizes are all worth more than one pound. We are all busy collecting unwanted gifts and nick nacks to wrap for the stall. Please come and support us. I.W. don’t have a meeting in August, but our Elizabeth Jones is hosting a garden party at her home yet again this year. We are grateful for being allowed to use her beautiful garden for this event; let’s hope the weather improves. We would be happy to see a few new faces at our meetings come along and see what we are up to. We are a friendly group who try and help others in our community and good causes in the wider world. Give us a talk about your charity. We meet the first Tuesday of every month in the Grove Golf Club. From September on it will be at 7pm. Suzanne Jefferies

NEWTON WI

We welcomed back the ever-popular Rev. Clive Williams again, this time telling us about the life of Haydn. He told his life story in his own inimitable way illustrated by playing his music. We were kept in fits of laughter at his anecdotes and also learnt much about Haydn - the master of the symphony. They say laughter is the best medicine so our games group must be very healthy after our last games afternoon. We are very competitive but that leads to a lot of hilarity! We have also enjoyed a luncheon at the Angel Inn at Maudlam. Our meeting this month is on July 10th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Stephen Jarvis will be our speaker on “Here and There/This and That”. We shall also be hearing about the National AGM at Cheltenham, which many members are attending. Our annual afternoon tea is on August 21st. It’s always a splendid occasion so do get in touch if you would like to join us. Dorothy Thomas 772157

The June meeting was held at our usual venue in Woodland Avenue, it was good to be back. Many thanks to the trustees of Newton Institute for their kindness in allowing us the use of their hall. The speakers for the evening were: Bryan & Pauline Thomas ‘The Folk Soap Team’, who gave a very interesting talk and demonstration on the process of soap making and kindly gave us all a sample to take home. Wednesday 15th May, our Educational Trip took us to Craig y Nos Castle, in the Swansea Valley, to the home of the late famous opera singer Madame Adelina Patti. We enjoyed a lovely lunch, a guided tour of the house and a wander around the colourful gardens. A very pleasant day with perfect weather. Also in May we were invited to Cwm Brombil WI ‘Victorian Tea Party’ with Queen Victorian attendance. The tables were laden with the most delicious food and copious amounts of tea. We were grandly entertained and the sun shone all afternoon. Thank you to the Ladies of Cwm Brombil, we all had a splendid time. Lots more to look forward to next month. M. Freeman

Our W.I. met on 6th June and 22 members were present plus one prospective new member Janet Morgan. Various things of interest were brought to the attention of members from The County Letter. Members going on the trips on The Brecon Canal and Mansion House, Cardiff were asked to pay any outstanding money. A wonderful thank you card was read to members received from Judith Lucas from Federation who had been with us last month at our AGM. Our Luncheon Club would be on Tuesday 18th June at El Prado, Laleston 12.30 for 1pm. Our campaign for a bench at the bus stop by The Great House was still ongoing. Our speaker for the evening was then introduced Lynne Tippet who gave us a very interesting and humorous talk on the history of the magistrates court. A vote of thanks was given by Elaine Jones. Tea was then served by Diane, Mo and Debbie. The raffle was won by Tina and the competition by Diane. Our W.I. meet on the first Thursday of each month at 7.15pm at The Blandy Hall, Laleston. For more information contact Diane Marshall on 01656 656600

Next year we celebrate our 90th anniversary, but this year we have a full and busy programme. Following a quiz and our winter lunch we had excellent talks on the Bridgend Arsenal by Mike Clubb and ‘All about chocolate’ by Maple Porthcawl (sampling their chocolate was a real bonus). We had our usual fish and chip supper in March. Future talks include organic farming, DNA and crime and talks by John Sheen and the author Mary McClarey. We went to see ‘The Bodyguard’ in Cardiff and are visiting Sudeley Castle in the Cotswolds this summer. We will all be looking forward to our summer meal in August. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7pm in Ewenny Community Village Hall. As well as members from Corntown and Ewenny we have many members from Bridgend, the Vale and Porthcawl. If you would like to come and join us or just to visit us please contact at merthyrmawrwi@gmail.com or simply call in. You will be made very welcome. June Price

Business & finance WHEN INCOME PROTECTION SUDDENLY WHAT IS YOUR INVESTMENT IS NEEDED RISK SCORE? It won’t have escaped the attention of too many people that the recent news from Ford in Bridgend regarding the future operations at the engine plant there has suddenly put a huge dampener on things and was even expected by many. The prospect of being under the threat of losing your job is a difficult pill to swallow and suddenly the household finances look to be under severe strain, especially if the income is the main wage in the home. I am constantly telling clients to not take employment for granted and to ensure that they take out cover for the loss of job due to redundancy or illness and at the time of writing this article, my phone has been ringing regularly with clients old and new wanting to chat about their own situation and finances going forward. For those who took income protection cover with us, there will be less of a concern perhaps but for those without cover the issue is a far greater one. Now, whilst workers at Ford’s will already know of the company’s intentions to close the factory on 25 September 2020, there are other places of work with large numbers of employees that could also see job losses in the near and far future – nothing seems guaranteed these days. Therefore, it is vital that employees everywhere seriously sit down and review their situation and where income protection is a definite need; we are here to talk to you and to offer help and guidance. If you have a mortgage, which is likely to be the case with the majority of workers and you need guidance on what to do, then give us a call and we’d be happy to help you run through the options available to you. DO NOT leave matters untouched as this won’t resolve anything – but talking to someone about your finances both now and in the future WILL help you to plan ahead just in case you find yourself in a similar position to those that work at Ford’s. Give me a call for an informal but confidential chat on 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 and I’ll happily discuss matters with you, at our office or at home if you prefer. I recently saw a retired gentleman who wanted investment advice. Given that he was advancing in years I automatically assumed he would be a cautious investor, but far from it, he was a particularly astute and adventurous investor, so how wrong was I? It just goes to show before giving advice it is important to “know your client” and never make assumptions. At the same time, you have to help clients to understand risk. Last year a client sent me his son to purchase a pension and he said to make sure his investment was safe. Given that he had 40 years before retirement the last place I was going to advise was safe as that would have limited his potential growth. e.g. £200 per month invested in a cautious portfolio would return £250,000 less than an adventurous portfolio over 40 years (a guide only). There’s a risk that sometimes investors are not taking sufficient risk and confine themselves to poor growth from lack of understanding their future needs. This is very subjective of course and it does largely depend on your “time in the markets” or your “duration for investment” as it’s key in the advice process. Chasing returns for the wrong reason is also dangerous which is why it’s so important to have an advisor check out your risk appetite and find investment products and funds that suit your current situation. Many people don’t know where their pension or ISA funds are invested and are curiously disturbed when they find out! Here again it is best to seek an advisor to analyse your circumstances and make changes where necessary before it’s too late. Please don’t “Google” how to invest your savings! DIY investment advice is nearly as dangerous as going on-line to check out your medical symptoms and it drives doctors up the wall as invariably you’ll get it wrong! If you want to know your risk profile please ask us for a questionnaire and we’ll tell you for nothing, EMAIL Info@abacusassurance.com PHILIP VAUGHAN Abacus Assurance 01656 772222

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

July brings long warm days lasting into the evening - perfect for pottering in the garden (and barbeques!) Though no work is allowed on July 22 its national hammock day, lawn cutting is forbidden! Plants like pansies and petunias tend to get straggly this time of year and deadheading individual plants can get a bit tedious, cut them back quite hard, give them a tonic with high potash fertilizer and they will soon produce new growth with lots of flowers, two for the price of one! A great trick for hanging baskets. Dote on your dahlias! If you want a show flower, remove the bud shoots below the main flower which will strengthen the stem, the flower will then increase in size, maybe a real prize winner! Keep your onions well watered, as this affects the size of the crop, lots of water means bigger onions (perhaps more prize winners) The humble beetroot – did you know this veg is a brill hangover cure (too many barbeques?) it contains Betacyanin, which speeds up the detoxification of your liver. The world’s heaviest beetroot was gown in Somerset in 2001 weighing 23.4 Kg –Wow lots of detoxification in that one! Chris Early

Congratulations to our long-serving President Janet Lock who won a First and Third for her entries at the Royal Horticultural Society show at Malvern. June has not been “flaming” this year but cool and showery. However the rain has been very welcome after a dry spring. The fairly recent interloper, the leek moth, has been doing very serious damage; even very experienced gardeners have fallen foul of it. The only prevention is to cover the young plants with fleece or something more durable like Envirotect, available in our Shop. This is also very effective against carrot root fly and cabbage root fly. Now is the time to prune Wisteria. Deadheading will prolong the season of your bedding plants; also keep on top of the weeds. Watch for slugs and snails, blackfly, cabbage white butterflies and all the usual pests, birds included. We have the new slug killer, ferric phosphate granules, in stock. You should be cropping early potatoes, peas, broad beans, beetroot and soft fruits by now. If you’re quick you can still sow beetroot, carrots, early peas, salads to be picked Sept/Oct while young and tender. Our July trip is to Brobury Gardens Hereford July10th. Frank Fulgoni

Health & wellbeing FOOD PRESERVATIVE LINKED TO OBESITY A potent mould inhibitor widely used as a preservative in food - especially industrially produced bread - has been linked to metabolic disruption increasing the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in a new study. Propionate is commonly used in a wide range of ultra-processed food including packaged bread. The Real Bread Campaign commented that, “This rings yet another alarm bell over industrial loaf fabricators using additives, neatly underlining one of the reasons that Real Bread bakers don’t. While this is a relatively small study and much more research is needed, to concerned shoppers we repeat our mantra: not all loaves are created equal so always read the label.” These concerns should act as wake-up call to consumers to turn their backs on highly processed foods laden with a laundry list of preservatives. Instead, we should embrace whole foods, minimally processed at most, as close to their natural state as possible. The Alliance for Natural Health “Food 4 health guidelines” gives the lowdown on adopting a nutrient-dense, real food diet for you and your family. Taken from www.anhinternational.org Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

FLOODS OF DESIRE - FREEDOM FROM DESIRE Desire and its root of hunger operates as we move through the world through the senses. There are many techniques, movements, social structures, products and religious practices that exist to try and help us break through the process of desire. For example - eating too much, there are many dietary groups. Over thinking problems and acting compulsive - Psychotherapy can help. Our Christian heritage offers Lent as a shared practice to live a period of time devoted to renunciation and purification. I am sure you could list many desires and the associated charity or group that has been set up in response to the desire issue. The Dharma devotes many of its prescriptive meditation processes to addressing sexual desire. The type of desire that is corruptive, destructive, abusing, painful and traumatic to many people. The Buddha wasn’t concerned with triviality, but person-to-person moral human relationships. The safe, easeful, cooperative friendship of people was his concern. Therefore in the teachings of meditation there is a whole section that addresses our blind infatuation with ‘flesh’ and the attractiveness of the body. Desire is a severe hindrance to a mind that has the capacity to be unburdened and essentially liberated from distraction and unwholesome thoughts. The meditation equation is not appropriate for this column. Search the Sattipathana Sutta at access to insight for further detail. Virtue is apparent here and now. Neville Evans

Arts & music BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR

Chelmsford Cathedral was the venue for the annual concert of Chelmsford and District Welsh Society and Bridgend Male Choir were invited to perform with ‘Serin’ a trio of wonderfully talented young women. The Cathedral was packed and an expectant audience was ready to enjoy a varied feast of music. An audience eager to listen appreciated the talent on display and the evening did not disappoint. They were rewarded with an imaginative display of harmony and spine tingling music. The choir and Serin were in sparkling form, sonorous, engaging and presented with razor sharp precision. The range of work was glorious and the poignant ‘For The Fallen’ performed by the choir befitted the recent 75th Anniversary of the D Day Landings and moved the listener to their own private emotions. The audience was inspired to hear the organ expertly played by Scott Williams and also witness the amazing accompaniment and musical direction from Stephanie Bailey and Ryan Wood respectively. The collaborative performance was exquisite and the joy in the Cathedral was palpable. On leaving, hearts were full and memories cherished with audience sounds of ‘WOW’ and ‘Best performance we’ve seen in years’ ringing in the ear. Jan Craddock

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

For the making of a documentary film, the one contributing factor that is often overlooked but in reality takes up a considerable amount of time and effort is research, especially if the subject of the film is set quite some time in the past. Lately I have been working my way through several books, with more to follow, in order to get the feel of the period for a production 52 | seaside news

I am working on, because it is easy to forget how social habits and attitudes change over the years – and the further back one goes, the harder it becomes to find people who were alive at the relevant time and able to convey their thoughts and recollections. It means knowing where to go for information, particularly if the research entails delving into public records, although recent data protection laws make it that bit more difficult, and bureaucrats these days are accordingly more reluctant to speak “off the record”. But whether it involves a genuine piece of detective work, or merely a paper chase, the main thing is to enjoy the challenge of trying to unearth long-forgotten facts. It also explains why no two films are ever quite the same to work on! Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir on location

Deadline date for the August issue is Monday 15th July STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Plenty of news in your favourite music column or, as an old drinking pal of mine described it in a Facebook rant: “Stag’s World of Himself!” It’s got a good ring to it but I’m far too modest to use it and never plug my own career (well, not always). The Newton Fest is on Saturday 24th August with an 11.00am start. Organiser and unsung hero of Porthcawl, Steve Maitland Thomas, who does so much for our town, has eleven acts booked which includes Rider, Supafreak, Zinvaldels, Side Effects, Evil Turkeys and the brilliant Rebecca Hurn. It’s going to be a great day, and I’ll give you the full times and line-up next month. Another event not to miss is The Stereophonics at Swansea’s Singleton Park on 13th July. It’s a great setting – having played there myself in the mid 90s along with Jools Holland, The Manics and a host of other top bands – so get your tickets soon. Finally, congratulations to our former drummer Ryan Aston who is playing Wembley Stadium on Saturday 6th July as part of Imelda May’s group, supporting The Who, Eddie Vedder and The Kaiser Chiefs. Tickets for the trip cost £20, and the coach will leave from outside St Illtyd’s at 8am, departing Windsor at 5pm. Those on the trip, which is open to parishioners and nonparishioners alike, will have the day to wander through the historic market town, visit Windsor Castle, take in the Long Walk, view St George’s Chapel (considered by the historian John Martin Robinson to be “...one of the supreme achievements of English Perpendicular Gothic” design), and enjoy myriad gift shops, tea rooms, and restaurants. Fifty years since the first man walked on the moon, stroke survivors in Bridgend are now proving that they too can overcome their own challenges by taking part in a charity walk for the Stroke Association in August. To mark this 50th anniversary, the Stroke Association is hoping each walk of its walks across the UK including the one at Bridgend will have at least 50 participants raising at least £50 to fund its work supporting stroke survivors and their loved ones, as they rebuild their lives after stroke. Just as people once thought walking on the moon was impossible, many people still don’t think that you can recover from stroke. Half a century on, as we celebrate one of the modern world’s biggest achievements, the charity is inviting people across the Bridgend area to celebrate stroke recovery by signing up for Step Out for Stroke at Newbridge Fields, which takes place at 2pm on Sunday 11 August. Step Out for Stroke is a series of mile-long walks taking place across the UK this summer. The courses are suitable for any level of walking ability, wheelchair accessible and participants can walk at their own pace, in their own time.

Sport reports NIPPER CAMP AND WELSH TEAM TRIALS

Pen y Bont SLSC has been busy and bustling with the commencement of the 2019 beach season. Club patrols have started, meaning Ogmore by Sea beach is fully lifeguarded every weekend; it is great to see that almost all junior, senior and master members are involved with the patrols. Pen y Bont’s nippers have had a great time learning first aid and making new friendships with nippers from across Wales at Nipper Camp. Forty-one of our nippers headed to St David’s for the annual, weekend-long camp - needless to say, they all had a great time. The club’s junior and senior members have been putting their race fitness to the test in the Welsh team trials. The Welsh surf lifesaving team will compete in August at Perranporth beach against the English team - an annual competition that is always competitive. The club is proud to have great representation within the twenty four-man Welsh team. Dylan Wisden and Amelie Clode have been selected for the Welsh youth team; Millie Wiggins, Meriel Clode, Rhys Wydenbach, Tomi Turner, Ashley Lewis and Lloyd Rosewell (team captain) have been selected for the Welsh senior team. We wish them all the best against England in August! Meriel Clode

RUGBY TRIUMPH FOR UNDER 16S

This Easter proved to be an eventful outing for Porthcawl Rugby Club’s Under 16s team. A total of 21 players and 11 dads crossed the English Channel for their first overseas tour. The Netherlands was the final destination to a small town outside Amsterdam. After a 17-hour coach journey on the Friday, the group still had the time and energy to explore the sites and culture of Amsterdam on the Saturday, but on the Sunday, it was down to business. The Hilversum tournament is a popular destination for clubs 60 | seaside news

email your sport report info@seasidenews.co.uk from all over Europe with 80 teams from ages 8-19 competing. Porthcawl were drawn in a group containing two English teams, Luctonians and Westcliffe, a Dutch team from Bredase and, believe it or not, local rivals Bridgend Athletic. Our lads excelled in the competition, finishing second in our group with victories against Bredase, Westcliffe and Bridgend Athletic (by default) and narrowly losing to Luctonians. Unfortunately, the boys just missed out on the final by a single bonus point. Fundraising was carried out prior to the tour, where many of the boys bag-packed in Porthcawl’s main Co-op. We would like to extend our thanks to the parents without whom the tour could not have gone ahead. Thanks also go to our sponsors Dunraven Windows and Co-op. If you are interested in joining any of the teams, you are very welcome. Please contact Matthew Roberts on 01656 784242.

Porthcawl Runners have been out in force over the past month at various events and with some outstanding results to boot. A group of 56 club members descended on Maesteg for only the second ever Keeper of the Colliery Run – part of the Gwyl Maesteg Festival – with a terrific turnout in both the 5k and 10k races. There was success too with Geraint Lewis – having stormed to victory in the inaugural 10k race last year – bagging himself and the club a second placed finish while just behind in fourth place was Alun Williams. Meanwhile at this year’s Cottrell Park relays, the ‘Team Tango’ trio of Wilfy Edwards, Deb Roberts and Dave Dickson coasted to victory in the mixed category. There was team success for the club at the Merthyr Mawr 5k also with Deb, Louise Mordue and Lauren Griffiths securing third place in the ladies’ team race. The Bridgend County Running League summer events have once again been well received as thoughts start to turn towards Cardiff half marathon training. The club meet at Porthcawl RFC every Monday and Wednesday evening at 6.30pm. More information about joining is on the club website: www.porthcawlrunners.com – or just turn up on the night!
