GARDENING
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
A perfect summer’s day is when the sun is shining, a breeze is blowing, the birds are singing and the lawn mower is broken! (James Dent) Lawn care Ugh, the way to keep grass in good condition is with a high cut twice weekly (yes twice!) rather than scalping it once a fortnight, leaving it longer will keep it greener and help to maintain moisture, don’t panic if it does go brown, it will soon green up again when the rain returns as you can be sure it will! Use the grass clippings as mulch around your potatoes to stop the tubers near the surface turning green. Sounds strange but look after your aphid eaters, ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings feast on greenfly and blackfly so protect them if you can, they do a marvellous job! Remember if we do get a hosepipe ban you can still use it to top up your pond if you have fish. Dote on your dahlias they are incredibly thirsty plants, water regularly for lots of lovely blooms. Did you know, dahlias were originally classed as vegetables, the tubers are edible and are said to taste like a mix of potatoes and radishes, yummy!

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY
We hope everybody is enjoying the summer weather and spending time in their gardens and arranging flowers. We are holding a garden committee meeting in a few weeks and will be discussing our plans for September. We used to meet at Awel Y Mor Centre every other Wednesday evening and hold alternate Practice nights and demonstrations. We need to establish a venue where we are able to welcome back members and meet visitors and new members. We have many ideas for an exciting programme and hope we are finally able to reopen our club. We will send out a newsletter after our Committee meeting to all our members and details will be available on our Facebook page. We hope it won’t be too long before we can meet again.
