PORTWAY SURGERY PORTHCAWL
NON-CONFORMITY IN PORTHCAWL
Dear Editor, I just want to rant about the Portway Surgery in Porthcawl. Before I was with Heathbridge surgery in Pyle and to be fair they were fab in there. If you need an appointment, they can tell you which days are available even for the next month’s availability. But when I transferred to Portway surgery, they can’t seem to make an appointment for next week. They can only book for this week’s. They would say ring again next week to check. Or if you want to check if there were bookings for tomorrow, they would say, ring tomorrow. Its almost as if they can’t take advance bookings? For non emergency appointments, it would be fab if you can make appointments in advance instead of ringing every week/day and trying to get a slot for that week. It’s like playing roulette. With the advancement in technology, I’m sure booking in advance would be possible. The midwives in Porthcawl can do that with just pen and paper. The admin staff should re assess the way they do things. Their current system might be working for them but not for the patients. Hopefully when they get their shiny new building, they would also improve. Angie Coleman Porthcawl
Dear Editor, The short feature, Non-conformity in Porthcawl, Seaside News, June 2018, provoked comment and discussion among many residents. It was interesting to note that the chapel chosen to be photographed was Noddfa (currently Noddfa Ruhamah) Welsh Baptist. Near the chapel door is a collection of stones crudely cemented together and a small plaque noting the name of Lewis Thomas. The stones were taken from the ruins of the old barn at Moor Farm, which was used by Lewis Thomas for worship from about 1650 onwards. Lewis Thomas is worthy of mention in any historical record of non-conformity in Porthcawl as well as nationally in Wales. He was a ‘farmer preacher’ who farmed Moor Farm. The first Baptist Church was formed by John Miles in Ilston, Swansea in 1649. Lewis Thomas was baptised there in 1650 and very soon after he organised worship meetings in the farm barn in Moor Lane which became a branch of Ilston and the worshippers known as ‘the brethren of the Moor’. With the restoration of Charles 11 in 1660 non-conformists faced fierce and relentless persecution, which lasted until 1688. As a consequence of the persecution many worshippers including John Miles were forced to flee the land and the set sail for Boston, Massachusetts, New England. With his departure ‘the mantle of John Miles fell on Lewis Thomas’ the Moor – ‘an outstanding teacher and pastor of the stricken scattered church.’ Lewis Thomas did not confine his ministry to these areas, but preached in Ilston and other places to the West, Blaenau Gwent and Hengoed to the East as well as many preaching excursions in England. The Conventicle Act of 1664 made it illegal for more than five people over 15 years of age, other than family members, to meet together. Any meeting held outside the parish church was known as a conventicle. Two important listed Conventicles were the houses of William Andrews and Richard Cradock in Newton Nottage. It is reported in 1669 that Lewis Thomas preached alternately with Richard Cradock to about twenty to thirty gathered people. However, the Revd. Edwyn Edmunds, former General Secretary of the Baptist Union of Wales, writing in 1927 said, “Baptists owe no man a greater debt than they do to that farmer minister, Lewis Thomas, The Moor, near the old town of Kenfig.” Trefor C. Davies Porthcawl
CAN ANYBODY EXPLAIN THE FOLLOWING PLEASE? Dear Editor, I have been living in the Bridgend area for 12 years and during that time I have paid my council tax, water rates, car tax whatever the tax I have paid it. However during this 12-year period the state of the roads have deteriorated year on year. They are filled in and in some cases a year later the holes return and sometimes bigger. To me the council built a 2nd bridge in Bridgend opposite the council offices, which cost and I feel, wasted a ridiculed sum of money. They painted and repaired the council offices last year. Now they are repairing and replacing the paving slabs opposite the council offices. When is the council going to prioritise and stop wasting ‘our taxes’ and fix the roads properly, for example? Stop moaning about cut backs as every year the council taxes go up. Yet every year the amount of holes seem to increase. I am sorry to say that if these people worked where I work and made these decisions they would have been fired years ago! Steve Caldwell, Bridgend

Is your conservatory too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter? A solid tiled conservatory roof regulates heat better than the usual UPVC roof panels on most conservatories as they are better insulated.

ACCESSIBILITY AT NEW SURGERY
RESIDENTS PARKING
Dear Editor, I appreciate there has been much discussion about accessibility regarding the new surgery and I have been given to understand that the Borough Council has promised to provide some clearly defined bus services. A casual examination of the site makes me very concerned at the lack of suitable parking facilities, which will cause major problems for the handicapped let alone elderly patients lacking full mobility. There is a large grassy area between the surgery and the Bridgend road that could be adapted tastefully but time is running out. It will be interesting to decide on the new name for the surgery but other problems need attention. W.T.J. Davies Porthcawl
Dear Editor, In April 2015 the BCBC sent out letters to certain households in Porthcawl although it asked for observations by letter or email within 3 weeks, there would be no formal response at this stage but a further consultation will be undertaken at the PUBLIC NOTICE STAGE. In the local press on the 24th May it gave the impression that the public had been consulted by the BCBC on residents parking in Porthcawl, THE PUBLIC MEETING DID NOT TAKE PLACE. When a councilor was asked why the reply was “ the public were not in favour so we knocked it on the head”. The people that I spoke to in our most affected streets thought it a good idea and would air their views at the promised public meeting as many people didn’t have the time to respond by mail. One of the proposed ideas by the BCBC in the same press is to limit waiting on the seafront at the eastern promenade and esplanade this will encourage more people to park up the side roads that really do need resident parking. Residents parking works well in many places so why not here. John Finney Porthcawl

Saving Grace: A Victorian Mystery by Hannah Howe

BOOK OF THE MONTH The Haunted Queen by Alison Weir Jane Seymour: The Haunted Queen, is the third book in the Alison Weir series ‘Six Tudor Queens’. Drawing on new research, the bestselling historian paints a compelling portrait of Jane Seymour. History tells us how Jane died, but this brilliant novel explores how she lived. Eleven days after the death of Anne Boleyn, Jane is dressing for her wedding to the King. She has witnessed at first hand how courtly play can quickly turn to danger and knows she must bear a son . . . or face ruin. This new Queen must therefore step out from the shadows cast by Katherine and Anne. In doing so, can she expose a gentler side to the brutal King? If you are a fan of Philippa Gregory, Elizabeth Chadwick or Alison Weir herself, this is a must read! 14 | seaside news

House.’ In the 18th century, Thomas Marment of the Pyle Inn, who offered it to his guests requiring a bathing holiday, bought it. It is believed that whilst staying there, Josiah Wedgewood, studying the pebbles on Newton beach, decided on the colour for his pottery. FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS
It is a well known that the town of Porthcawl developed around a coal exporting dock, first established by the Duffryn Llynfi Railway Company and, later, developed by the Brogden family in 1865. Yet this dock was not the first trading port in the area. In the 15th Century, Newton developed as a township and as a port. A creek ran inland along, what is today Beach Road, and was referred to as ‘The Weare at Newton.’ In the 17th Century, Newton ships traded with Bristol, Ilfracombe and Porlock. Yet by the late 18th century, the coastline proved too hazardous, smuggling had become prevalent and trade ended. However, by 1671, one trader, William Leyshon, sailing his ship ‘The Five Boys of Newton,’ traded so successfully that he was able to build a large house near the port called the ‘Weare

School reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL NEWS
BRYNTEG COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
St Clare’s Year 9 scientists are Welsh Regional Winners for the third year running. The pupils have won £2,500 prize money for the school, individual prizes and a trip to London to compete against the other regional winners with the chance to win another £2,500. The winning team is called ‘Straight Outta Science’ their captain is Jaynee Winslade-Gregory and teammates are Susmita Dutta, Dylan Bebbington and Izzabel Woodward. New Head teacher, Mrs. Helen Hier praised the pupils for their efforts and said: “STEM is so important for our children, our region and our country, we need to encourage the current generation, as well as future generations of pupils, to understand and embrace the technology that affects them every day of their lives. Pupils are taught by engaged and enthusiastic teachers using hands-on and minds-on activities. Making science and math courses fun and interesting not only helps pupils to learn, but might also plant the “seed of interest” that could grow into an exciting and rewarding STEM career”. Come and see what a St Clare’s education can do for your child. Contact our Registrar, Holly Fowlkes on (01656) 789966 to book a place or visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk now! YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR Following achieving the Welsh Language Charter Bronze Award we are busy working towards the silver accreditation. Pupils visited Port Talbot Hospital to discuss the use of Welsh in the workplace with employees, hosted information evenings for parents and presented the Urdd Good Will Message in a special assembly. Pupils from have been using their linguistic skills appearing in a variety of programmes filmed by Boom Cymru, working with our friends from Afon Y Felin Primary School and competing in the Urdd National Eisteddfod. The rugby, netball and cross country teams have been successful in competitions and tournaments proudly wearing our new kit sponsored by our PTA. Following a successful Health and Wellbeing day organised by our Eco Committee, the ‘Monday Mile’ was introduced to further develop our fitness. Working towards the New Curriculum, an expressive arts dance project introducing the history of the Rebecca Riots is being refined and filmed this week. The under-fives supported Save the Children’s ‘Peppa Pink Sponsored Walk’ and year 6 organised a Christian Aid fundraiser. An E-Safety evening hosted by our Digital Committee, a year two road safety course and our annual visit to ‘Crucial Crew’ have all developed our awareness of citizenship. NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL The end of the summer term is a great opportunity to reflect on the growth of pupils and staff over the last year. Together, we have developed our skills and improved learning and wellbeing throughout the school. The Welsh Government has set out a new direction of travel for schools, which focuses on supporting children to become ambitious, capable learners as well as giving them the foundations to be healthy, confident individuals. This year, we have introduced new approaches to boost confidence, improve wellbeing and ensure academic attainment. From investing in intensive support to build resilience in our most vulnerable learners to holding events to give parents a chance to participate in school life, we have ensured that each pupil and family receive the support they need to thrive at school. We are sector leading in our approach to literacy and numeracy, enabling pupils to learn in small groups by stage, not age. This method has built confidence and developed a friendly and connected environment where pupils from across school years work together to problem solve and grow. We are proud of our growth over the last year and we’re dedicated to building on these firm foundations next year. Kate Cubbage Community/Parent Governor

school reports FINANCIAL EDUCATION WEEK AT PIL PRIMARY
All pupils enjoyed a financial education week in June. All lessons were focused on a financial theme and pupils worked extremely hard to earn ‘Pil Pounds’. The junior department had workshops from NatWest Bank delivered by Sian. Years 5 and 6 were ‘fraud detectives’ for the day learning about different types of fraud and the dangers of on-line fraud in particular. Years 3 and 4 were busy ‘planning a party’ and having to work within a budget. Nursery performed a wonderful assembly for their parents on the theme of ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’, they spoke about how much money they needed to buy everyday items. Year 6 had a visit from Dan the Community Area Manager, who explained how to go about setting up a business. Year 6 set up their own ‘party planning business’ and planned an afternoon tea party for parents. They priced up different cakes on-line, sold tickets and visited Asda to purchase the food. On the day, they prepared the delicious sandwiches and were very busy serving parents. At the end of the week, pupils celebrated by spending their ‘Pil Pounds’ that they had earned on rewards at the school bank. A big thank you to NatWest Bank for all their help and support and to Warburtons for the supplying bread. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their week and have learnt vital life skills for the future. N Pryce Head Teacher
CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL Outside activities are better when the sun shines which helped to make our Royal Wedding ‘street parties’ and activities, including a visit from the Queen, all the more memorable. The sun shone brightly too on our Outdoor Learning Day when we had fun playing games, building dens and creating superb art work amongst the trees. Studying woodland habitat was also the focus of an enjoyable visit by classes Oren and Porffor to the Botanic Gardens. This followed their walk to Kenfig Nature Reserve where they learned about local habitats enabling comparisons and contrasts to be made. One habitat closer to home is our vegetable garden, which is thriving due to the care and lots of watering being given. It has been exciting to see the vegetables growing in our colourfully painted planters and we are looking forward to harvesting and eating! A big thank you to all our helpers, especially to Guttridge Florists for the tomato plants. Thanks too for the books kindly donated by Georgie’s Diner and well done to our contestants in the library quiz. We are currently enjoying the class assemblies while the children in years 2 and 5 have learned about fire safety and year 6, at Crucial Crew, personal safety and citizenship. PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL Fifty PCS pupils from Years 7-9 visited Paris over half term. They went up the Eiffel Tower, enjoyed a boat trip on the Seine, went shopping and visited Disney. Everyone had a brilliant time and pupils were a credit to the school. June was extremely busy with the culmination of our transition programme. Having completed three ‘Helping Hands’ sessions designed to build the confidence of some pupils, we held the Music Transition on June 14th when pupils enjoyed a whole day of fun music activities that ended with a fantastic concert for parents. For our main Transition Day on 21st we welcomed over 200 new pupils from our feeder primaries as well as outof-catchment pupils. The final events are a uniform evening and disco which will be held at school on the 9th July. We welcomed Year 12 back after exams with a three-day induction programme, designed to equip them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about choices next year and beyond. This included visits from external speakers and UCAS information. They also worked on their Welsh Baccalaureate Global Citizenship Challenge and a new head team was chosen for next year. At the end of the month we celebrated the talents of many pupils at our annual technology and art evening. Congratulations to all! Andrew Slade Head Teacher
ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
As we say a farewell to our current Year 13 students, we look forward to celebrating with them at their Sixth Form Prom, which this year will be held at the Waterfront Museum, Swansea. We would like to thank our sixth form team, led by Head Boy (James Williams) and Head Girl (Amelia Bunce) for all their hard work and kindness to younger students. In addition, our Year 11 students celebrate their prom at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea, and we look forward to their journey into higher education in September. The school welcomed a visit from Sir David Ramsden, Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, in an effort to inspire future generations about job opportunities within the financial sector. This was followed by a question and answer session, in which students had the chance to explore current financial matters. We are overjoyed that three of our young carers were instrumental in the publication of a book on being a carer. Well Done Charlie Evans and Brodie and Rhian Haywood! Congratulations to Libby Hopkins, who was the winner of the logo design at the Festival of Learning, and runners up Katie Thomas, Julia Krokosz, Lucy Doyle and Jack Carson. We are looking forward to welcoming our transition students and this will be celebrated at a Welcome Mass on Thursday 5th July 2018, at 7.00 p.m. Angela Keller Head teacher
PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS We love learning at PPS and understand the importance of ensuring our lessons are engaging and meaningful. We have recently started COOL Days – this stands for Choosing Our Own Learning. Our children start the beginning of each term dressed according to their topic and have a fun filled day full of topic-based activities. Key Stage 2 children recently had a World War 2 Day and Foundation Phase had a Ship to Shore day! The children made decisions about what they would like to learn for the topic during the coming term and came up with amazing ideas. Staff ensure the appropriate skills are covered. We have also just heard the exciting news that we came joint first for Bridgend in the Bike It Challenge. We like to keep fit and healthy and encourage children and parents to cycle to school. Foundation Phase recently celebrated the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle by dressing up as princes and princesses for the day. We had our own wedding ceremony where all children had an important role to play. After the wedding we celebrated with a garden party where we played lots of games and the happy couple cut the cake and shared their first dance! Our school is a happy place with excellent standards. If you are in the process of choosing a school for your child and would like to come and have a look around, please contact me on 01656 815660. Jo Rowley Head Teacher

Poets corner WHY I’D LIKE A NEW BODY
Iris and me are sometimes full of woe, She is as tall as I am short, Bodies stiff and rather taut, often feeling out of sorts. She’s as fair as I am dark, reminding us of our past. The days of youth of long ago, O what fun it was when we were full of vigour and Vitality So now and then we try to recapture supple limbs and hair of luster. A daily dozen we compile swinging arms and bending thighs And o so careful what we eat to make us lighter on our feet, Aiming for a body what will work, In a way in which it ort, Pampering our selves with lotions and creams for that poise and grace. As the seasons come and go so the years are passing too. Now we have decided what is best, Try to grow old with dignity like the rest, Walking tall and like a line thinking nice thought’s and sharpening the mind. It has to work for us you see, as we are both arthritic. Mill Cefn Cribwr
LINES WRITTEN A FEW MILES ABOVE TINTERN ABBEY
Now, as the clouds clear in the Wye Valley, A siskin flock utters twittering calls. A buzzard cries. Two ravens tumble together down the thermals above the hill. A single peregrine sails over the orchard. Jays screech from the woods and a wren breaks cover to scold a perceived intruder. Robins sing here and about. Mist rises with the unrelenting clock. Dusk and the owl. Night, the recidivist thief, with accomplice clouds, steals the sun again. The sharp bark of roe deer and fox. Nocturnal creatures. Rooks unsettled. Woods. Darkness. Night. AN EVENING PRAYER Night clouds are gathering, the light now is waning But starlings are swirling exulting and whirling Yet some now withdrawing and resting apart Then rising, regrouping, exulting, still swirling Yes, rising and whirling nor fearing the dark So I sit in the stillness, nor closing the curtain Just gazing in wonder at close of the day Thoughts whirling and swirling, withdrawing, regathering Nor fearing the darkness at close of the day For starlings are resting, asleep in their nesting Needing refreshing to greet the new day And for those who believing and God’s word receiving There will be a new dawning, Yes, we’ll see a new day. MY BEST FRIEND My lovely mother in law Has gone to sleep With the angels now They will love her as much As we all loved her too Shine bright Nanna As you always did So when we look up At the brightest star We will know where you are Better by far that We remember and smile Than remember and be sad To the world you were My mother in law To me you were the world Sue Waters, Porthcawl
I LOVE YOU WALES In Summer In your wardrobe of bright colours. The reds, the blues, the yellows, Fresh from nature’s paint box. I walk along the beach, Picking shells along the bay. Ice creams, fun fairs, The sun freckling my nose. I love you Wales. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

CYBER CRIME PREVENTION
Project update Our pledge to deliver a programme of improved public seating is underway. Cllr Sean Aspey is leading the project, which will involve identifying benches across town, which are damaged or require refurbishment. Please contact us if you are aware of any. In Newton, Cllr Graham Walter has overseen the renovation and installation on Newton Green of six benches, which were generously gifted to Newton by Porthcawl Harbourside. What’s happening generally? In East Central, Cllr Brian Jones has used his share of the Community Action Fund (CAF) to jointly finance a survey for the ‘Safe Routes to School’ project for Newton Primary. Through this effort, further funding has been granted to implement necessary highway improvements. Cllr Jones has also used part of the CAF to purchase new books for Porthcawl Primary. What are your Independents doing? In Nottage and Rest Bay, Cllrs Norah and Mike Clarke are using the CAF to improve the safety of children and parents by implementing road safety features around entrances to West Park Primary, following major safety and parking concerns. The new Data Protection Laws, which came into force on The 25th May, give us the perfect time to consider our own protection. The new laws afford us a degree of protection; organisations can no longer use our data without our expressed permission. However, our own vigilance is the best protection against cybercrime. During Fraud Awareness Week, Andy Fyfe, Detective Chief Inspector of the City of London Police explained that fraud is a largely under-reported crime and that cybercrimes now account for 50% of all crimes in the UK. The most common types of fraud are computer software service fraud, fake technicians pretending to be IT firms to gain access to personal data, and fake websites setup to encourage people to donate to apparently worthy causes. The most shocking example perhaps being the numerous fake websites set up for donations in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The new laws to protect our data are very welcome, however, these examples go to show that the point at where our personal data is most vulnerable is with those who seek to defraud and exploit people’s good nature. The best ways to protect ourselves, be vigilant and only give your data to someone you trust. MADELEINE MOON MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

Pioneering phone service taking the hassle out of patients’ prescription orders A new telephone ordering service is taking the hassle out of requesting a repeat prescription for Bridgend east patients. The service started last October and has already been so successful that it will be evaluated to see if it could be extended to other areas. Many surgeries don’t take repeat prescription requests over the phone, which means patients having to visit their doctor’s or the local pharmacy.
Elderly and disabled patients and working people can find this difficult so they have welcomed the new Repeat Prescription Ordering Service, which means patients only have to make one phone call to get the medicines they need.
30 | seaside news
It’s available to patients at Pencoed Medical Centre, New Surgery Pencoed, Oaktree Surgery, Riversdale Surgery, and the now merged Ashfield and Newcastle surgeries. They can ring 01656 311010 between the hours of 9am-4pm, Monday to Friday, to chat to trained staff based in a small call centre at Glanrhyd Hospital. The call handler issues the prescription and it is then taken to the GP surgery for signing and then on to the patient’s chosen pharmacy for dispensing – all within three working days. Eileen Brown, from Brackla, Bridgend, says the Repeat Prescription Ordering Service has saved her a lot of time and trouble. Eileen suffers from severe osteoarthritis and takes several different medications. She attends Riversdale Surgery where
patients can’t phone in for a repeat prescription. “I think the new service is long overdue,” she said. “Our doctors are the best around but I don’t need the hassle over getting my prescriptions putting up my stress levels. “Now I just have to make one phone call to request the medicines I need and they are delivered three days later. “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened as far as I’m concerned. I’ve used it several times and I find the staff friendly and very helpful.” Avril Tucker, the project lead pharmacist (below left), said the new service has the potential to deliver huge benefits to the NHS as well. Prescription medicines worth around £4 million are destroyed each year in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend because they are not used or needed. Avril said: “Medicines wastage is a huge problem for the NHS. This is often driven by the over-ordering of repeat items. “Our call handlers have got time to chat with the patient and find out which medicines they actually need at the time they are ordering. I believe this empowers the patient to take responsibility for their own medication. “Some patients with complex conditions can be on more than a dozen medications and with the average cost of each prescription item being £9, the savings can be considerable. “We are aiming to save £800,000 a year – that’s 10 per cent of the annual drug bill for the cluster – by preventing overordering.” The new service is also saving GPs and surgery staff a great deal of time in processing prescriptions.
Dr Matthew Peach, (above) of Riversdale Surgery, said: “It’s good for GPs because it takes a workload off our prescribing clerks and gives patients an additional way of ordering prescriptions. “Older people like speaking to someone about their medicines, a service that busy surgeries struggle to offer. “People seem to really like the new service and it is also good for the NHS because it cuts down on waste.” When the service was set up last year – the first of its kind in Wales - the goal was to process at least 50 per cent of all repeat prescriptions for the six GP practices, and it is well on the way to meeting that target. Service manager Liz Hutchinson (above right) said the call centre was handling around 800 calls a week (up from 84 in the first week) and that is expected to grow as more people become aware of the service. She said: “We will recruit more staff as demand grows. At the moment the average time patients have to wait for their phone call to be answered is just 14 seconds and they will be
on the phone to us for up to five minutes, depending on how many medicines they need to order. “We have got time to talk to people, to get to know them and build relationships and the feedback we’ve had has been very good.”
Avril added: “We want to make it as easy as possible for patients to order the medications they need when they need them. “Sometimes patients order medications when they don’t need them thinking they have to, or if they don’t they won’t get them when they do. “This service will be able to reassure patients about their medication, answer medication queries, and help us to save potentially millions of pounds a year by reducing the amount of unused medication being prescribed.”
• The Repeat Prescription Ordering Service can be accessed on 01656 311010. • Patients can still continue to order their repeat prescription directly with their GP surgery or via a pharmacy ordering service and/or a pharmacy delivery service. • Patients in the ABMU Health Board area with access to the internet can also sign up for an online prescription ordering service via MyHealthOnline. PORTHCAWL REGENERATION PLAN BACK ON TRACK? After years of frustration for Porthcawl residents, it seems that the council’s decision to buy out the private leaseholders of Salt Lake has unblocked regeneration plans. BCBC representatives met town councillors and members of the public to outline its new proposals, which have been changed because of changing circumstances. It intends to develop a medium sized supermarket on Salt Lake itself – at the northern end. There will be no other retail development on the site. The Portway road, which was to be closed, will now remain open to traffic and the Hillsboro Place Car Park will also be retained and substantially upgraded. The old Harlequin Building is also to be renovated. There are also proposals to attract a budget hotel chain to the site and provide some leisure facilities. But the sticking point will undoubtedly be the fact that there must be housing on part of the site to generate the income needed to pay for things like improving the Eastern Promenade. The key question will be – what type of housing? Nobody wants blocks of seaside apartments so the council still has to carefully work out what homes it will permit and what sort of community it will grow. RECYCLING HITS RECORD HIGH IN TIME FOR FIRST YEAR ANNIVERSARY
SWANSEA BAY TIDAL LAGOON
We are now a full year into the new recycling and waste collections, and have been comparing the results with the previous twelve months. Despite a difficult start, it’s very clear that the service quickly found its feet and is now surpassing national targets set by Welsh Government. The vast majority of Bridgend County Borough residents are embracing the new procedures to the extent that they are recycling 68.5 per cent of household waste – a huge increase that has smashed the first target. During 2017-18, residents recycled 31 per cent more plastics and metals than the previous year, 35 per cent more food waste, 43 per cent more garden waste, 36 per cent more paper, 14 per cent more glass, and 3 per cent more cardboard. Our food waste is being converted into agricultural compost which is being re-used locally, and nappies and other absorbent hygiene products are being processed and converted into new products such as fibre boards, acoustic panelling and more. At a time when new headlines are full of issues such as the need to reduce ocean plastics, this is excellent news, and I am looking forward to seeing what the scheme can deliver over the coming year.
In January 2017, Charles Hendry published his report calling the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon a ‘no-brainer’. We’ve been waiting ever since for a decision to be made on whether or not the project will go ahead. Let’s be clear about what this project would mean for South Wales. The Tidal Lagoon is the most exciting energy project we’ve ever seen in our region. It would breathe new life into our economy, turn Wales into a world leader in renewables, and be the spark for a global energy revolution, which finally starts to tackle climate change head on. It’s obvious that the Tories in London aren’t keen on the idea, but when have they ever been keen on delivering for Wales? We expect Westminster to betray Wales by now. Electrification was scrapped, our powers were stolen, and the Tidal Lagoon hangs in the balance. But I discovered recently that Wales’ Labour Energy Minister hasn’t had a single conversation about the Tidal Lagoon with the UK government since the rumours started that it would be scrapped. It is utterly depressing that we have also come to expect the Labour Party, in government in Wales, to do absolutely nothing about London’s betrayals.

TOP MARKS FOR THE FESTIVAL OF LEARNING I was really pleased to see Bridgend County Borough hosting the recent Festival of Learning. This unique event was described as being a first for Wales, and showcased some of the new and innovative learning and teaching methods that are being used at schools throughout the county borough. Over the course of a week, more than 800 pupils, teachers, educators, trainers and employers took part in 100 school-based workshops where they experienced how modern classroom developments are benefiting local children alongside traditional numeracy and literacy techniques. Some of the techniques on display were truly innovative, and included using virtual reality technology in the classroom, Lego therapy and outdoor ‘mountain’ schools. A symposium event at Bridgend College focused on how the health and well-being of pupils can be developed, maintained and improved, and a Learners’ Day at Bridgend Life Centre gave pupils an opportunity to set up stalls and offer displays and practical demonstrations before receiving an address from Professor Sally Holland, Children’s Commissioner for Wales. This was a fantastic opportunity to share knowledge and develop new ways of supporting children, and I hope the festival will grow so that other parts of Wales can benefit from its insights and developments. PEACE AND GOODWILL MESSAGE 2018/ NEGES HEDDWCH AC EWYLLYS DA YR URDD In May, it was a great pleasure to welcome Urdd members from Mid Glamorgan to the Senedd for the first performance of this year’s Peace and Goodwill message. The powerful message of hope and peace has been shared with young people around the world. People were encouraged to share the message on social media using the #heddwch2018. In the message, the young people express their gratitude for the opportunities that they have had in all aspects of their lives, their hope that these opportunities are available to everyone and also the hope that everyone is given the same opportunity to use their voice. Over the years, the message has been performed from a variety of venues including the top of Snowdon and the European Parliament. The first message was sent in 1922 by the Reverend Gwilym Davies from the Rhymney Valley, the same year that the Urdd was founded by Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards. The message has been translated into many languages including Chinese, English, Czech, Estonian, Finish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Gaelic, Russian, Spanish and Swedish and reaches all corners of the world. MARKING THE YEAR OF THE SEA As efforts to mark 2018 as being the ‘Year of the Sea’ continue, it’s great to see Porthcawl’s iconic Jennings Building being recognised with another award. This time, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors has applauded the way in which the Grade-II listed structure has been brought back into public use by presenting it with a regeneration award. With an overhaul underway at the harbour kiosk, the Salt Lake lease back in council hands and a new watersports centre progressing at Rest Bay, there’ll be further exciting announcements to come. Speaking of the Year of the Sea, this is being marked all along the Welsh coastline in a variety of ways, and Bridgend County Borough has already held an ‘aquathlon’, bay swim and voluntary beach-cleaning events. The council is planning lots of other summer activities with partners such as Awen Cultural Trust and Credu Charity Ltd, so don’t be surprised to see giant sea creatures roaming along the promenade, street theatre or a modern twist on traditional seaside postcards. The Year of the Sea will also be marked in a range of interesting ways at other popular events over the next few months, and there’ll be more news on this soon. We are already half way through the year. Maybe it’s time to remind readers what we actually have at the Talbot. Our alterations are over! We have three offices namely the Aberbaiden, Bryndu and Cynffig, two different size halls, the Rees Hall, and the Talbot Hall. We have two kitchens and a kitchenette, used for hot and cold beverages only. We have five toilets spaced throughout the building, and my office! On the upper level, served by either an electric lift or stairs, we have offices solely for use by the Pyle Community Council. And of course, we have a front entrance, a side entrance and a rear entrance served by steps or ramp. These rooms are in use most days and evenings for lunches, bingo, computer classes, coffee morning, tap and ballet lessons, Partner Whist – we are currently looking for a whist player, with groups such as Cwtch Cynffig and Mental Health Wales using the building every week and the local W.I. use the Talbot each month. ASTEROID HURTLES BETWEEN EARTH AND MOON During May, an asteroid named 2010 WC9 flew through the space between the Earth-Moon system. The asteroid was discovered in 2010 but astronomers lost track of it soon afterwards and were surprised when it reappeared without warning eight years later. The asteroid is around the same size as the Tunguska object which destroyed a forest in Siberia in 1908. It is at least 3 times as large as the Chelyabinsk meteoroid, which exploded in the morning sky over Russia in 2013, shattering windows and knocking people to the ground. Large pieces of rock around two metres in diameter frequently collide with our atmosphere where they explode or simply burn up as a bright fireball. Man made objects such as satellites and rocket sections fall out of orbit every year yet it’s extremely rare for any to reach the ground thanks to the atmosphere surrounding our planet. Next time the Moon is visible in the sky, take a look at it through a pair of binoculars and you will see that without an atmosphere to protect it, its surface is covered with craters, some of which are quite recent asteroid impacts. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL We retain our unofficial status as the busiest National Coastwatch station in the UK for the number of incidents handled - 27 at the time of writing! In May we logged and monitored 180 commercial vessels, 685 leisure vessels, 3 military vessels and 48 other categories. We dealt with 9 logged incidents and monitored 14 others. These included a Mayday call, kayakers in danger, windsurfers and paddle boarders in difficulty, broken down vessels, hazards to shipping and flare sightings. This was by far our busiest month since the station opened, with 668 hours of watch keeping undertaken. June is already following a similar pattern. During Whitsun Bank Holiday we raised £1044 in street collections from generous members of the public. These donations allow us to operate and provide a maritime ‘Search and Rescue’ asset in Porthcawl and the surrounding coastline. In June we were delighted to be invited to Porthcawl Town Council where, as one of the selected charities, we received a cheque for £3000 from the Mayor of Porthcawl’s Charity Fund. We are extremely grateful and proud that our work is being recognised. This money will be used to improve our ability to provide a coastal surveillance facility at Porthcawl. Nick Weedon, Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI
PORTHCAWL COASTGUARD The Porthcawl team has had a busy first half of 2018 with 45 ‘Call Outs’ with our busiest months being January and April with 11 and 12 call outs respectively. The area we cover ranges from the Ogmore River to Kenfig River however we are occasionally tasked further a field to Port Talbot via their coastguard team if they require backup. Our team is made up 10 volunteers who make themselves available 24/7 365 days a year. We are trained in Search and Rescue, Water rescue, First aid, Pyrotechnics and 4x4 blue light driving. Our call outs include problems such as vessel breakdowns, swimmers, paddle boarders, jets skiers, kite surfers, horse fallers and missing persons to name a few. We train regularly on a Thursday and patrol the area at least twice a month to check coastal paths, emergency telephones and carry out storm patrols when required. Just remember that when you visit the coast or plan a water based activity at the seaside, be prepared and stay safe and if you see anything your unsure of no matter how small don’t hesitate to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH I often wonder what Jesus makes of the Church that developed in his name. In the Gospels he seemed slightly annoyed when people piled praises on him. I always think of a little story at the end of the Gospel of John in which Jesus and some of the disciples shared a breakfast of fish on a beach. Jesus says to Peter, “Do you love me?” three times – and after being told “Yes,” each time Jesus utters the following enigmatic statements: “Feed my lambs”, “Tend my sheep”, and “Feed my sheep”. The point Jesus makes is “If you truly love me, do something about it. Feed the hungry, comfort those who mourn, bind up the broken.” Sometimes, Christians can too often be focused on the ‘religion about Jesus’ rather than the ‘religion of Jesus’, and I can’t help thinking Jesus himself would be more than a little frustrated about this. Whenever I notice this happening with me I always think back to those words: “If you love me, feed my lambs. If you love me, tend my sheep. If you love me, feed my sheep.” God Bless. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa
We are grateful to the Porthcawl Mayor’s Community Fund where Cllr Lorrie Desmond Williams’ Mayoral appeal kindly gave a donation on 5th June for £200 and to the Rotary Club of Porthcawl who have given us a donation of £100. Also thanks to groups and individuals throughout the year for their financial support. This is needed to keep our workshop going, and to pay freight charges and sponsor our training partners in Africa. Staff from H.Q. Ben the new Group’s Coordinator, Stuart the new Workshop Manager and Florian one of the European Volunteers have visited us from Austria. The TFSR Van donated by Rotary, was well filled with crates, sewing machines and arc welders on their way to Malawi. We were delighted to be invited to visit the workshops at the Museum of Welsh Life at St. Fagans, a wonderful experience showing the care taken over restoration. We will be having sales of surplus tools not going to Africa, at the County Borough Agricultural show at Pencoed College 13th to 15th July and at the Lions Classic Car Rally at Porthcawl Rugby Club August 4th. We are closed during August. John Hanson Group Coordinator Tel: 01656 786367
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Jim Carrey said, “I wish everyone had as much money as me because then people would realise that money doesn’t really satisfy, deep down.” People have always looked for true fulfillment and meaning in life. It’s like we all know that ultimate fulfillment is not found within ourselves. This will sound biased but I believe that a genuine sense of fulfillment is only found through a personal relationship with Jesus. I think God created us and so at our core we are spiritual beings. The bible tells us that when we are in relationship with God, He lives within us and we can then know a sense of completion, joy and peace that goes deeper than anything else. That’s my story anyway! When I really came to discover the reality of Jesus, I suddenly felt like I had come home. It was like life made sense on a whole different level. The love I also experienced was ‘out of this world’. It was a love on a whole new level. Friend! I would encourage you to get know Jesus. Look for a good local church or seek out my good friend Martin Gillard from Gilgal Baptist Church in Porthcawl. Help is available. Neil Harvey

PORTHCAWL U3A High summer in sunny Porthcawl, and the 500+ residents who are members of U3A are enjoying the good times - learning, having fun and making new friends. Last month our Sunday lunch group enjoyed a convivial gathering at the Pier Hotel; Friday evenings saw our wellattended talks programme covering world religions; there was an interesting and enjoyable excursion to the National Trust’s Tyntesfield, near Bristol; whilst our popular walking group made the most of the weather with guided walks at Kenfig and Parc Slip. Plus, there were some 94 meetings of interest groups at venues across Porthcawl covering 41 different activities from creative writing to crafts, painting to photography. Whilst we’re out and about at this time of the year we’re often asked, ‘What is U3A?’ Well, U3A stands for University of the Third Age. The word ‘university’ is used here in the original sense of the word - a group of people learning together. The third age describes a period of our lives when we’re fully retired or working part-time towards retirement. The aim of the U3A is ‘learning for pleasure’ in an informal way that will keep mind and body active and promote physical and mental well-being. Do join us - and from this month you pay just half the membership fee to the year-end! Brian Thomas Secretary, Porthcawl U3A sec@porthcawlu3a.org www.porthcawlu3a.org

Sancho is a seven-year-old Staffy cross English Bull Terrier. He is a friendly chap who is excitable when he meets both people and dogs. He loves his walks and he will happily walk alongside other dogs, however, his play style off lead can be a little boisterous for some, so continued training and socialisation with a patient owner will be beneficial. Sancho is best suited living in a pet-free home, and he can live with children 11 years and over. He has a fun personality and would be a great addition to the right home. For more information on Sancho, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. You can also visit our website at www.dogstrust.org.uk
Adelaide de la Tremouille (pictured) was born on 19th December 1855. She married Edwin Bartlett, a wealthy London grocer, on 6th April 1875. For ten years the couple enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle. Then, in 1885, they met the Rev George Dyson. The Rev Dyson and Edwin enjoyed long conversations, particularly about marriage and relationships. During one of those conversations, Edwin revealed that if he should die, he would like the Rev Dyson to marry Adelaide. Sure enough, on 1st January 1886, Edwin did die, of chloroform ingestion. The police investigation revealed that, when alive, Edwin had allowed the Rev Dyson to kiss his wife. This led to suspicion and the arrest of Adelaide Bartlett for murder. The Rev Dyson who, on 28th December 1885, had bought four bottles of chloroform, was also arrested, but his case was dismissed. At the trial, the jury wrestled with one question raised by the post mortem: how did the chloroform reach Edwin’s stomach without burning his throat or mouth? No one could supply an answer and although the medical experts found the verdict hard to swallow, the jury allowed Adelaide to walk from the court, a free woman. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q) My ex-wife and I divorced in 2016 and I have been told by a friend that I should be concerned that I do not have a Clean Break Order in place. We had limited assets and split them equally. Do I need to be worried? A) Yes. The 2015 case of Wyatt v Vince reinforces the importance of a Clean Break Order on Divorce. Mr. Vince and Ms Wyatt met in their early twenties and married in the early 1980’s. They separated in 1995 divorcing shortly afterwards. They had one child together and were of limited means. Mr. Vince went on to set up his own company which by 2015 was worth £107 Million. Although the couple had finalised their divorce in the mid 1990’s, neither had made an application to the Court in relation to the financial matters nor had they reached an agreement. Therefore, at the time of the divorce, the Court had not made a Clean Break Order preventing the parties from making claims against the other in life and death in the future. As a result, 20 years later, the ex-wife Ms Wyatt was able to
make a claim against Mr. Vince’s assets, originally seeking £1.9 million! She settled in fact on £300,000. However, the case highlighted the importance of a Clean Break Order and that without one, a former spouse can return to Court years later and ask the Court to consider a claim in respect of property, pensions, income etc. It is therefore extremely important that a client obtains a Clean Break Order during the Divorce proceedings failing which there is always the risk that a former spouse will re-emerge at any stage in the future and make a claim even in relation to assets accumulated post divorce! SEPARATION AND DIVORCE There are many couples that decide not to divorce but simply to separate. It is commonplace to make a Deed of Separation to record any agreement regarding financial matters, children and plans to divorce. Care needs to be taken before signing any document as this could be relied upon if a divorce takes place at a later date. If you have both received legal advice, the court would prefer not to overturn the agreement at a later date provided that you had both been honest and there has not been any change in your circumstances. When you are living apart, you are classed as separated by the Inland Revenue and by the Benefits Agency. A Judicial Separation is an alternative to divorce. This is not so common but could be considered when there are religious objections to divorce. It follows the same court procedure as divorce and the court retains the power to settle financial disputes with the exception of pension splitting. The court can also settle any disputes regarding children. The main difference is that you no longer have any legal duty to live together but you cannot remarry. This should be carefully considered with your solicitor. In order to obtain a divorce, you have to show the court that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. This means that either one or both of you feel that you cannot stay married to each other. Either of you may apply to the court in England and Wales for the marriage to be dissolved as long as you have been married for one year at least and that one of you has been a resident here for the year before your application is made. You should speak to a solicitor when considering which option will be best for you. Madeline Rand KING DAVID
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has now been implemented. It is designed to prevent individuals and organisations from ‘processing’ information about any living individual who can be identified from that information, unless they have a legally acceptable reason for doing so and they can prove that they treat the information properly. ‘Processing’ covers practically anything that can be done with information - obtaining it, collecting it, sorting it, analysing it, discussing it, destroying it or even just filing it. The individuals to whom the information relates may be people (for instance, customers, or suppliers, or employees) with whom you have dealings now, with whom you hope to have dealings in the future, or with whom you have had dealings in the past. Most businesses cannot function without taking account of the GDPR’s provisions: even defunct businesses might still be ‘processing’ information. You must have a ‘lawful basis’ to use personal data. The most common business reasons are likely to be one of the following: • You have a person’s consent to use their data and must only use it for that reason. • It is necessary to perform your contractual obligations or to do something before entering into a contract at the individual’s request (eg providing a quote); • You need to use the data to comply with a legal obligation; or Anything relating to anyone’s race, ethnic origin, politics, religion, trade union membership, genetics, physical or mental health, sexual orientation can only be justified if you hold it for one of a list of specified reasons above. The GDPR removes the requirement for organisations to ‘notify’ the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) of their data processing activities. However, there is still a fee that must be paid by most businesses that takes effect on 25 May 2018. Yearly fees range from £40 to £2,900 depending on the size of your organisation. The fee will not necessarily have to be paid on 25 May. If you are currently registered with the ICO, you will only pay when your current registration expires.

Some exemptions apply. For example, if you only use personal data for staff administration, advertising and marketing, or for accounts and records, you will not need to pay. If you do not know whether you should pay, the ICO provides guidance on their website or seek legal advice or you may face a fine of up to £4,350.

Women’s institutions BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS
Bridgend Soroptimists met at the Heronston Hotel recently to hear a most informative and entertaining talk on ‘Women and The Vote’ given by Ceri Joseph of Porthcawl Museum. Ceri’s presentation charted the start of women campaigning for their rights back in the 18th century and through the last 100 years to the present day when equal rights is now the norm. However there is still work to be done and she is currently heavily involved with the forthcoming Porthcawl Carnival on 21st June when the theme will be the Suffragette Movement and achievements through the ages, with our own Welsh celebrity, Roy Noble, participating as Lloyd George. Also supporting the event will be Bridgend MP Madeleine Moon. It is planned the Carnival will be lead by 100 women wearing the Suffragette colours of Green, White and Violet and Ceri invited members of Soroptimist Bridgend to participate in the spectacle. It should be quite a day. For more information on Soroptimist International contact sibridgendsecretary@gmail.com New members always welcome. NEWTON WI The singing of ‘Jerusalem’ commenced the June meeting which was full of information, so diaries were necessary to record our future plans of interesting activities and places to visit. The formal part of the meeting over, we were treated to a delightful fashion show (clothes by ‘Klass’ of the designer centre). Six members modelled the smart colourful clothes to great effect. Thanks to the two lovely ladies from ‘Klass’ who were most helpful. Every one enjoyed. On 23rd May 50 members embarked on our educational trip to the Forest Of Dean and the ‘Aunt Martha’s Victorian experience’. It was rather quirky, not quite what we were expecting, but very entertaining. The excursion incorporated a visit to Symonds Yat, the beauty of the Wye Valley was outstanding, especially in the glorious sunshine. We all had a splendid day. On 27th July we will be holding our ‘Summer Fayre’ at Trinity, starting at 10.30am where there will be lots of bargains on offer. For more information contact Jennifer on 784715. M. Freeman

SKER WI NEWS The June meeting of Sker WI was held recently chaired by the new president Eunice Howlls and there were 39 members present. After the minutes had been read and the normal business dealt with the speaker for the evening was Mr Phil Styles from Coastwatch. Mr Styles is the Station Manager of Coastwatch in Porthcawl, which is based at The Old Pilot Lookout, and came into force after the Coastguard Station closed. They have been there since 2016 with 40 people involved. It is a voluntary organisation and there are 4 along the South Wales coast between Barry and Milford Haven and are open 7 days a week. The main aim of Coastwatch is to scan the area going as far as the Somerset/Devon coast to make sure no boats or people/surfers are in any difficulties. Each Coastwatch station has to raise money for its own running costs and last year Porthcawl raised £14,000. We have various things going on over the coming weeks including the Glamorgan Show and our Summer Fayre on 3rd August. Anyone wishing to join us is very welcome. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at St Davids Hall, Nottage at 7pm. Ann Vipond

Business & finance MORE HELP FOR RETIREMENT BORROWERS Since last month, a further number of lenders have launched special retirement mortgage products, and on an interestonly basis where required, in response to the need for current borrowers to find a new deal where the current lender is refusing to help and demanding the outstanding money back. The vast majority of these lenders who are stepping in to assist, are building societies who are far more sympathetic than the high street lenders when it comes to people in retirement or those people who don’t have the capital repay the current mortgage. Fresh lending is obviously based on circumstances and income and in many cases people can afford to pay; indeed they are currently doing so however, the lender simply won’t assist. If YOU have a mortgage that needs urgent attention, don’t just sit on the problem – pick up the phone and talk to us. We deal with EVERY lender that offers a possible solution, so you know you’ll be in good hands. 01656-782545 OR 07768-418308 are the numbers you need and evening and weekend calls and appointments are fine with us. DIABETES LIFE COVER – BRAND NEW POLICY AVAILABLE Many people have tried to take out new life cover but were unsuccessful because either the cost has been too expensive or they simply couldn’t get cover at all. Now at last, a major UK household name insurer, has launched a brand new policy that aims to provide cover for those people with both Type One AND Type Two diabetes, subject to the latest readings you have undertaken. This will make a massive difference to so many people and it’s possible in many cases, to get cover put in place almost immediately, which is a major improvement. Maybe it’s time you reviewed your life cover anyway, perhaps because you don’t have enough or it’s close to running out and you don’t want to find yourself uninsured, especially if you have a mortgage or family to protect. Call us now on 01656-782545 OR 07768-418308 for a no obligation quote, so nothing to lose but possibly much to gain. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545
DEMAND FOR LIFETIME MORTGAGES CONTINUES TO RISE! An increasingly common scenario many retired people find themselves facing is that they are asset rich but income poor. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
July is the time to relax in the garden whilst anticipating our holidays next month. Planning for our summer trips needs a bit of preparation to keep our gardens looking in tiptop condition for when we return home. It is always a good idea to be on top of weeding and such general care as deadheading before the suitcase gets packed otherwise returning home to a wilderness can be a depressing prospect! We gardeners are always preoccupied with the weather – it is either too cold or too hot! Even when we are lucky enough to get a few weeks of kind weather we fret that our plants are coming on too quickly. The latter especially applies to our club members who are bringing on plants to exhibit at our annual show on the 1st September. Everyone keeps their fingers crossed that the plans come together at the right time! The September show is when we also renew our membership and it is nice to see both old and new faces on the day. Our membership cards also contain the schedule of talks for the coming months. Something to whet our appetites as the long summer evenings begin to shorten! Joyce Pegg New members are always welcome – find out more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk
July is often the hottest month of the year, perfect for a nice cold beer! Plants also need a lot of liquid now especially tubs and baskets; the mass of roots inside the container plus the foliage on top make rain penetration almost impossible - these rely totally on you! Terracotta pots are very porous it’s a good idea to line them with perforated plastic before planting or watering could become your main pastime! If your baskets are getting straggly give them a trim followed by a good feed they’ll reward you with more flowers. Onions love a good soaking too, remember – little water – little onions! Lots of water discourages lettuces from bolting too. Brussel sprouts and broccoli should go in this month, poor plants, everything is out to get them, so get paranoid or don’t grow them at all. Cover in netting to keep out caterpillars and pigeons. Keep deadheading roses and give them high potash feed, burying a banana at their roots helps. If you take cuttings, shove the stems into a potato before planting this keeps them moist while roots develop. The smell of cut grass relieves stress (apparently) so keep mowing! Chris Early

Health & wellbeing A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS JUST A WISH In June 2017 we decided enough was enough and we were going to lose weight We both had health problems and were tired of being overweight. Facing the truth about your weight is one of the hardest things to do and I will admit to bursting into tears almost as soon as I walked in through the door at Slimming World. Looking at the figure on the scale made us determined not to look back but the group leader took our hands and the journey began. Staying to class is the key – supporting each other and celebrating every loss and sharing the lows too. We eat healthily following the plan, we eat so much!! You would never think you were going to lose weight but the weight came off steadily over the weeks. You never feel hungry and there is nothing you cannot eat. The list of free foods is amazing including potatoes rice and pasta in unlimited amounts. You have a generous syn allowance. You can even enjoy a gin and slimline tonic at the end of the day! Food optimising has changed our lives. Simple changes make big differences. We have lost almost 13 stone between us to date, the journey continues……
TUMERIC/CURCUMIN There is still a lot for us to learn about this fascinating spice, but early research has looked into the potential effect of curcumin on a range of conditions from pre-menstrual tension to Alzheimer’s disease. However, more clinical studies are required before these health claims can be confirmed. It is important to note that the amount of curcumin in turmeric as we buy it can vary, depending on species, growing conditions, harvesting etc. Most of the studies use turmeric extracts that contain mostly curcumin alone, with dosages usually exceeding 1 gram per day. It would be very difficult to reach good levels just using the turmeric spice in cooking, although it is clearly a welcome addition to the diet. In addition to delivering antioxidants and other properties, herbs and spices can be used in recipes to partially or wholly replace salt, sugar and added saturated fat in, for example, marinades and dressings, stir-fry dishes, casseroles, soups, curries and Mediterranean-style cooking. Turmeric has a deep, golden-orange colour and looks similar to ginger. It is usually boiled, sun-dried and then ground into a powder. It has a peppery, warm flavour and a mild fragrance. Turmeric is the main ingredient in curry powder and can be used as a colouring agent. It has long been used in both cooking and colouring. Turmeric has also played an important role in traditional Eastern cultures and Ayurvedic medicine. Much of its new-found popularity is due to its therapeutic properties. ARE YOU LONELY? Three quarters of people over 50 in Britain describe themselves as lonely, with many going entire days without speaking to a single person. Many find themselves suffering this isolation and loneliness in silence, unable to share how they really feel with their families. Being lonely doesn’t necessarily mean being alone. It all depends on how the person interprets their situation. Some people are more than happy to spend time in their own company when it’s their choice to do so, but for others, isolation could be the result of circumstances beyond their control, like bereavement. Left unchecked, feelings of loneliness can impact every aspect of a person’s life and may even lead to depression. So, if you are feeling lonely, it’s important to take positive steps as soon as possible. One positive step you can take is to join MHM Wales’ Wellbeing and Friendship Group. The group is exclusively for people aged 50+ and it’s a great way to meet new people and socialise. You can be sure of a warm welcome and it’s a great way to find out what else is going on, not just in Porthcawl but throughout the County Borough, so it’s a great place to start if you’re new to the area. The group meets every Thursday from 11am - 1pm in The Y-Centre, 25 John Street, Porthcawl. CF36 3AP There’s a small entrance fee of £1.50 to go towards room hire costs, after that you can enjoy all the tea and coffee you want for free.
CHARITY OR VANITY? A colleague walks into the office and announces that he is preparing to complete a triathlon for his charity. I asked him. How much time are you investing into training and racing for the event? He was training ten hours a week for a whole year. He was surprised that I made the enquiry. He was completing the charity form to waiver his race fees. Race fees stood at £300 and £700 went to the charity. I told him that I admired his skills and his qualities as a person. He was effectively going to endure 500 + hours of training in order to save £300 and raise money for a charity that he knew nothing about. I asked him to reconsider his intentions. Here generous intention makes all the difference. Could it possibly be that he could re-invest his skills and energy and give the charity 500 hours of his time. If his hourly rate of pay was £15 per hour. He would be giving the charity a magnificent £7500 of savings. A huge difference and it was all down to one simple thought and practical consideration. Away from ‘What’s in it for me vs How can I really help and serve’. With care and a stable mind, ask your self? Where is this intention? If its real generosity it will arise in your heart area. Follow that, not the allure of a free bee. Conceptually doing some ‘thing’ for charity is not the same as an actual ‘in the real world’ charitable act. Consider this, it may open doors for you. May you be well and happy. Neville Evans

Arts & music MALE VOICE CHOIR IS A WORTHY CAUSE MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR
Choristers at a Bridgend Male Choir were delighted to learn that their organisation had been chosen to benefit from a fund set up by local supermarket chain FILCO. The happy singers welcomed Ian Hunt from the charity branch of FILCO to their rehearsal in Oldcastle School to applaud choir Chairman Gareth Davies being presented with a cheque for £250. Ian explained that their charity arm ‘Making A Difference Locally’ (MADL) has been established to support local communities, which are served by the FILCO independently owned convenience stores. This is done through the sale of certain products in-store, which then contributes to their charity fund. A number of choristers support the local FILCO stores in Bryntirion and Sarn. Chairman Gareth Davies thanked Ian in front of over 80 smiling choristers. He said, “The choir is delighted to receive such wonderful local support. The money will definitely help the choir to buy new music scores as it prepares to compete at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in August – a chance to put Bridgend on the Wales music map yet again.” Gareth Reese Secretary, Bridgend Male Choir
PORTHCAWL COMMUNITY SINGERS Porthcawl Community Singers will present their Summer Concert ‘Shades of Love’ on Saturday 14th July at 7pm in All Saints Church Porthcawl. It will be an enjoyable evening of light music about love in all its various guises. The conductor is Angharad Edwards and accompanist Sheila Miles. The Singers will be joined by their friends Meinir Davies, Contralto and Adam Behrens on guitar. We are fortunate that Angharad our conductor is also an accomplished professional harpist and will be accompanying the soloists. Tickets are £6 available from choir members or at the door. Programme to include a raffle ticket – only £1. Strawberries and cream at £1 will be served in the interval. ‘Porthcawl Community Singers’, originally ‘Porthcawl Choral Society’, was formed last year to sing a range two and three part lighter more popular music to appeal to singers and audience alike. The choir has grown since the change of direction and would welcome more singers. There are no auditions although a basic audition ability to read music and some experience of singing is useful but not essential. Rehearsals are held every Monday evening 7.15 to 9.15 in Trinity Church Porthcawl. The autumn term begins on Monday 3rd September. Thanks Pat Parry 48 | seaside news
It has been a busy few months for the choir, recently we sang at the Civic Service for the Mayor of Pencoed who is also our President. We are currently practising for our Annual Concert which takes place in the Welfare Hall Pencoed on Friday 13th of July at 7pm. Our guests this year are Pencoed Primary School Choir tickets will be available from choir members or you can pay at the door. In November we will be holding a charity concert in aid of our charity the Alzheimer’s Society. At our last social evening several members received a lifetime achievement award for being with the choir for over twenty years. Next year is our 40th anniversary so we are planning ways in which to commemorate this. Recently we have welcomed some new members to the choir but there is still room for more particularly altos. If you are thinking of joining a choir why not come along to one of our practices details are on our web page www.midglamorganmixedchoir.com Now is a good time to join as we have changed a lot of our repertoire so we are all in the same position! Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook. Tony Esmond Chairperson/Publicity Officer
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Those Damn Crows Get Signed! I turned down an invite for Swansea’s Big Weekend in case I bumped into Ed Sheeran, but I will be at the Welsh Fest, St Nicholas on 27th to 29th July, so get your tickets! Looks like yours truly got it right again – Bridgend’s Those Damn Crows has signed a major record deal. I had the lads on my “In Session” radio show years ago when they were known as Shirker, so will catch up with them soon. Also, Last Flight to Pluto got rave reviews after their big London concert with Marillion’s Steve Rothery Band. Their new album is out soon. Kenfig Hill’s Jayce Lewis has a tour planned and let’s hope there are some Welsh dates. Former Ezra main man, Porthcawl’s Andy Edwards, has a new project “The Mighty RA” on the go, which sounds interesting! Remember that if original music is not your thing, there are plenty of good local cover bands around, including Pollen Count, The Electric Company, The Riff and my old buddies The Guzzards. Thanks for the new C.D. from indie rockers Carolines – I’ll give it a listen. Keep all your music news coming. KENFIG HILL MALE VOICE CHOIR
It is a very exciting time for the choir as we look forward to our Annual Concert at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl this month. Not only is this one of the choir’s highlights of the year but a special one for our outgoing Musical Director, Phil Juliff and incoming MD Josh Xerri who will both be picking up the baton at the concert. We are joined by our two youth choirs Crescendo and Da Capo (under the direction of their MD Kathryn Blight), where we have one of those rare opportunities to perform some pieces together as a massed choir, a rare treat. All three choirs have successfully opened the Kenfig Hill and Pyle Festival Week with a Gala Concert at Pisgah Chapel, enjoyed by a very full and appreciative audience and also were invited to perform at the Mayor of NPT’s service at St. Theodore’s. All in all, the choir has had an extremely full and enjoyable year and we look forward to an equally exciting new year ahead, starting in September, with our new MD. More information can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/KHMVC/ on our website at http:// www.kenfigwelshmalechoir.org.uk/index.html or contact the secretary Tony Ulberini at tonyulberini@gmail.com Tel: 07866 742452 Dave Xerri – Publicity and Media officer
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently hosted our annual 7 Way Battle where we invited 6 other clubs along to compete for the trophy, Bridgend, Rhondda, The Vale, Abertawe, Aberdare & Neath. It was a great battle this year with some excellent entries from all clubs. Harry Gardiner from Tenby expertly judged the event. I’m delighted to announce that this year WE WON! We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels; it’s all very informal. So if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk Geoff Baker Tel: 01639 851050 Email: compsec@pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW I have already spoken to quite a number of people in Porthcawl about my new town film, either seeking permission to film on certain areas of land, or asking to include notable buildings in the production, and I am pleased to say that the result is usually helpful and supportive. In the late 1950s, David Whitmarsh took the time and trouble to make his black & white film, “In and Around the Village of Nottage”, and this serves as a wonderful visual document of Nottage as it was sixty years ago – a reminder of a lost era. Today’s world will quickly slip into the past, as more areas of land undoubtedly surrender the beautiful and varied green shades of nature for the often harsh and visually-unforgiving built environment, and I believe it is vitally important to record what presently remains of the town’s rural landscape before more of it disappears – the quiet narrow lanes, ancient hedgerows and wind-blown crops in the fields – so that the next generation will be able to look back in future years and see how much more they have lost. Of course people need somewhere to live, but we need our open spaces and connection with nature, too. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films Tel: 07510 934299

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. SURF REPORT FOR SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA Mid-June and there are some 3ft waves with a lot of wind making poor conditions. The shingle banks are worse this month and any waves are breaking flat. It’s the possible end of an era with no sign of the shingle banks building back up in their spread out condition. We went 20 years at the RM with poor breaking waves and now it seems we are back there. Our local surfers must be proud of our young Talent 11 year old Eli Perrins Davies for doing so well in The 2018 Billabong MiPost Welsh Nationals held in Pembrokeshire on the last Bank Holiday. Eli won the U12, U14 and U16 boys titles and even came third up against the big boys in the under 18s. Our other young Talent Cieran Hughes has recovered from his broken leg and is bag in the water. Who knows…5 – 10 years from now we may be watching them compete in some final at Pipeline Hawaii J Lets hope for more and bigger waves this summer as we have waited all this time for warmer waters and warmer days. www.tuskasurf.co.uk David a Batten

PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB NEWS
The beach season is now in full swing which started with the Mumbles Nipper Carnival in Swansea in some pretty tough conditions (for the kids and parents!). All the Nippers were awesome and Rest Bay managed to come away with the win. Then it was on to Barry Island for the Llantwit Major Carnival which went right down to the wire with our neighbours Sker & Pink Bay with them pipping us at the post to win their first Carnival in 4 years. A big congratulations to all involved in the Nippers section of team Sker and of course to all the kids – it was obvious how much the win meant to you all. A special thank you to Nolan Recycling Ltd for purchasing three new hurricane nipper boards, and to others for the donations that have been made to the club recently. Rest Bay Lifeguard Club is a registered charity and is run completely by volunteers and therefore relies on fundraising events and donations from local businesses to help train our lifeguards of the future. If any local business would like to be

Summer is here and it’s time to get your outside space in order. Why not give us a call, and we can give you some great ideas to improve your home’s kerb appeal.
Why should you install a Resin Drive? That’s simple; our product naturally drains water through it which means no puddles. Also with a slip resistant surface it provides better traction for tyres and gives more grip for when you walk on it, making your drive a safe place to be!
