Your views 80TH BIRTHDAY FOR MARILYN CAUDLE

Dear Editor, I am writing to you to request a 80th birthday message for Marilyn Caudle. Marilyn has been the postmistress of Pyle Post office for nearly 50 years with her late husband John. She is a kind, caring and compassionate lady who goes over and above to help everybody in the local area. She truly is the matriarch of Pyle and a wellrespected member of the community. I would even go as far as to call her the “Jewel in Pyle’s Crown”. This woman has dedicated her life to helping others in our community and I would simply like her to have a little recognition for her 80th birthday on July the 8th from all the Pyle and local Community. I hope that the Seaside News will recognise this incredible lady for her big birthday. Mrs Sharon Gray

LOCAL BUSINESS CLUB DONATE PPE TO LOCAL CARE HOMES & CHARITIES Dear Editor, I’m getting in touch as a committee member of BVBC (Bridgend Vale Business Club), I believe we have a heart warming and positive story to share amidst all of the negativity going around. BVBC committee decided we would use money we had set aside to purchase £1000 worth PPE in the form of masks, hand sanitizers and antibacterial wipes for those in need of it. We decided we would deliver PPE to the following care homes and charities: – Glanffrwd Care Home Pencoed; – Foxtroy Care Home Tondu; – Blind Veterans Association; – Awen Care Home Bridgend. On Monday 25th of May, myself (Steve Richmond of Steve Richmond Carpets) and Lady Helen Mary Morgan Wooldridge of Fake It Beauty delivered £1000 worth of PPE to the three care homes and one charity in the Bridgend borough. Library books LAUNCH OF NEW ‘BOOK AND COLLECT’ LIBRARY SERVICE Awen, in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council, has started the process of repurposing libraries with the launch of a new ‘book and collect’ service. Operating from Pyle and Aberkenfig Library, library members will be able to request a package of books from a specific genre or interest, such as crime novels, picture books for toddlers and young adult fiction. Loans of specific books from the online library catalogue will be limited by what is available on the library shelves at the branch you are collecting from, however it may not be up to date, as returned books will not be put immediately back into circulation. Library members will be required to call the library on 01656 754850 (Pyle) or 01656 754820 (Aberkenfig) between 9.30am and 11am, Monday to Friday, to place their order. To help maintain safe social distancing, books will need must be collected at an agreed time slot. There will be 36 pre-booked collection slots available per library, per day, and the number of loans may be capped due to stock levels, to ensure everyone has access. Books will be automatically renewed and there are no fines for overdue items. To help reduce the risk of cross infection, all returned books will be quarantined for 72 hours, as advised by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales, before being returned to the library shelves. Our ‘book and collect’ service is the first step towards the reopening of our libraries. It will be a phased process, as the safety of our staff and borrowers remains our top priority and based on local priorities of need. The ‘book and collect’ service is restricted to library members only. Anyone who is not a member can join for free through the Awen Libraries website. Borrow Box You can still access hundreds of free books and audiobooks online through the BorrowBox service. You can either find BorrowBox on our site at www.awenlibraries.com/downloads/ or download the app from your app store on your mobile or tablet device. You will need your library card number and PIN to log in and the service is then available to you to search, browse and download! If you have trouble accessing your pin, please contact libraries@ awen-wales.com. Facebook Follow us on our ‘Awen Libraries’ Facebook page for up to date information regarding our Book and Collect service, Facebook Live activities and tutorials on how to use our digital services. VALLEY TO COAST 2020 NEWS

HELP FOR THOSE WITH PARKINSON’S

Sadly this year we have decided to cancel the Valley to Coast Walk, however instead of doing the 18 mile walk as the original plan which was to walk from Blaengarw to Porthcawl we are asking if you would do the 18 miles over the month of August. This way you’re still doing the 18 miles and hopefully we’re getting some funds in. As a charity we are really lucky as we run from the offices of Moss Technical so we don’t have any overheads like rent, rate and wages etc but we still do need funds to help people, so if you’ve got any fundraising ideas again we would really love to hear them. You can go to www.costofcancer.org.uk/events if you want to download a sponsor form. Below is the image for the walk and also the logo for the company who sponsored us this year. They are Autobahn Finance, thank you to Craig and Sarah Judd for your support this year. Anyway, keep yourselves safe and look after your friends, families and neighbours. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

Do you have Parkinson’s? Do you struggle with Speech and Communication? Do people sometimes ask you to speak up? Are you just a little bit savvy with on-line communication? We could have the answer for you. “LIVE LOUD” is a group of people with Parkinson’s, run by trained Parkinson’s UK volunteers. It gives participants opportunities to practice using their voices and build their confidence. Groups run regularly on-line; are free to attend and partners/ carers are welcome to assist. The aim is to be heard, so you will encourage one another to speak loudly and clearly. Each session has a variety of activities with an emphasis on fun and enjoyment. The sessions have been running at Bridgend for 15 months and there is the opportunity to join in. To register your interest, please contact Bernie Rock, Live Loud Lead Volunteer & Local Branch Secretary E-mail: b.rock@sky.com Tel. 07812 196170 We hope you are able to join us.

MEDITATION Behaviour has changed and social distancing is working. Walking in the local CO-OP, I noticed that people are engaging in a lot of rapid eye scanning, checking and double-checking. This is a response to a worryful mind. Eye contact is also avoided and movements of people’s hands a little erratic. Completely natural in the circumstances. I know that there is a weight of thoughts that sit behind this behaviour. There is suffering - visible here and now. I do recall writing many months ago about how you can hold your hands and use the position of your hands to provide a natural pause, an opening for self-compassion. Meditation in daily life! You can ask - What is the inclination of the mind and heart now? Many times through out the day, the hand can be placed over the heart area. Affirming that in struggle, it will be ok. If this can break the pattern just for one moment. The life of threat and tunnel vision may be opened to a new Psychological freedom. This is called Mindfulness in Buddhism - simply knowing thoughts, knowing the body. May we meet as strangers in the Coop with ease! Neville Evans

Deadline date for the August issue is: Wednesday 15th July THE BENEFITS OF ASTAXANTHIN So what is this mystery nutrient? It’s a deep red-colored phytonutrient synthesized by microalgae called Haematococcus. It’s grown in fresh water using sophisticated techniques that encourage the algae to grow its own powerful medicines that protect it from oxidation, UV radiation and other environmental stresses. When harvested from the algae and concentrated into a liquid, astaxanthin becomes the most powerful antioxidant known in the natural world, demonstrating 550 times the antioxidant power of Vitamin E, for example. Now why is antioxidant power important? Think about it: Much of what goes on during the ageing of the human body is due to oxidation. Every time you breathe, you’re inhaling some oxygen, right? That oxygen reacts with your cells to create energy, but the byproduct of that energy is the creation of free radicals. These free radicals cause DNA damage, nerve cell damage, accelerated ageing of internal organs and more. The way to stop those free radicals is with antioxidants, which bind to them, neutralising their damaging effects. Astaxanthin, it turns out, is so good at halting free radicals that it seems to confer miracle-class health benefits to the human body... benefits that might be described as “anti-ageing” or “reversing disease.” Read more at www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Local news STATE OF THE TOURISM INDUSTRY

CARDIFF CAPITAL CITY DEAL

I AM becoming alarmed about the state of our tourism industry in Wales and in Porthcawl. My concerns are shared by Wales Secretary Simon Hart who has urged First Minister Mark Drakeford to lay out his plan for opening up our tourism industry, which employs thousands of people. Everyone agrees that unless they can have some summer season – even if it is curtailed – the outcome will be devastation for the hospitality, entertainment and tourism sectors. The Chief Medical Officer for England, Dr Chris Whitty, recently said that no option in this crisis was without risk. There is no such thing as being completely safe. So Welsh Government, like the others across the UK, has to weigh the risks of the virus spreading against the risk of economic devastation in this sector. And for those who believe that the economy is dominated by big banks and corporations owned by city tycoons, nothing could be further from the truth In Wales. Most businesses here are owned by people who have sunk all their savings into them and who spend every waking minute fighting to stay afloat. The time is fast approaching when decisions about their future have to be made.

I welcome news that Porthcawl and the western part of the borough are going to benefit from the Cardiff Capital City deal although we could do with some dates. Constituents have been asking what they are getting out of BCBC’s £11m contribution. Little has happened on the transport front for this part of South Wales West which is covered by the Cardiff deal rather than the one for Swansea and the west of the region. The deal’s Metro Plus scheme will include a Maesteg-BridgendPorthcawl-Cardiff corridor, which involves train and bus connections. Phase 2 of the Metro includes proposals to provide a purposebuilt bus station in Porthcawl with a park and ride connecting to Pyle Railway Station where improvements were announced some time ago. The plan is to locate the new Porthcawl bus terminus on part of Salt Lake, on the part known as The Green. It will be near to where the proposed food store is to go. This will be subject to public consultation and planning consent. This is not much compared to what South East Wales is getting from the City Deal. Porthcawl’s connectivity needs a lot more investment but it’s a step in the right direction.

JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

‘CATCH UP’ SESSIONS BEGIN AT LOCAL SCHOOLS Schools across Bridgend County Borough have now started a phased return, and significant changes are in place for emergency childcare provision. In line with Welsh Government guidance, a series of ‘Check In, Catch Up’ sessions are helping pupils prepare for a return to normal lessons in September. The sessions, which are not compulsory, are being carried out with full social distancing and well-being procedures in place. With year groups split into cohorts and staggered starts, lessons and breaks, a mix of online and personalised classroom experiences are helping children and teachers get ready for when the new term begins. The summer term now ends on 27 July, and the autumn break has been expanded to two weeks instead of one. Emergency care is being provided at each child’s own school between 8.30am 4.30pm, and you should check the council website for the latest news on arrangements over the summer break. Once again, I’d like to thank our dedicated heads, teachers, governing bodies, teaching assistants, support staff, catering staff, administrative staff, caretakers, cleaners and volunteers. Without your dedication and ongoing efforts, the impact of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic on Bridgend County Borough would have been far, far worse – thank you. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

KEEPING WALES SAFE As more restrictions are lifted in England, I have received a number of enquiries asking why Wales is not immediately following suit. In lifting restrictions as we look to rebuild our society and our economy, the Welsh Government continues to take a cautious and careful approach. People’s health and wellbeing is always at the forefront of everything we do. There is not a set template against which everybody is judged on how to handle this crisis. The Welsh Government’s approach to easing the lockdown, planning our recovery and for the safe reopening of businesses, is to lift restrictions at the right time based on the very best science and medical advice available. Thanks to the huge efforts by everyone, the number of new cases continues to fall, as does the number of those being admitted to hospital with the virus. The Welsh Government reviews its coronavirus regulations every 21 days where they consider the latest medical and scientific advice, the state of the virus in Wales and the transmission ratethe R rate. Providing the virus is still declining and the R is below 1,then this gives the Welsh Government the headroom to allow more economic activity to restart. CARWYN JONES AM MS for Bridgend

TACKLING RACISM, HARASSMENT AND DISCRIMINATION Bridgend County Borough Council has always had a zero tolerance approach to racism, harassment and discrimination. Whether it is through our work as part of the Community Cohesion and Equality Forum or our compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty and Equality Act 2010, we fully support Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic members of our community and our staff, and have a long-term commitment towards tackling inequalities. While we do not maintain any controversial statues of historical figures in the area, some residents have called for local streets which have ‘Picton’ in their title to be changed due to a perceived association with the brutal slave owner and controversial Governor of Trinidad, Sir Thomas Picton. However, others think it is more likely that many of those same streets are named after the former owner of Ewenny Priory, Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Picton-Turberville. As more information is clearly needed, I have asked for further research to be carried out so that the Cabinet Equalities committee can consider the issue in full, accurate detail. In the event that residents wish to apply to have street names changed, an existing legal process is already in place to support this – I’ll bring you more details soon. COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

A HELPING HAND FOR BUSINESSES As I write these words, the deadline for businesses and small charities to apply for grants designed to help them get through the coronavirus pandemic is fast approaching, and the council is preparing to launch the next phase of funding support. To date, we have issued £29m to 2,256 local businesses, and £310,000 to 31 charity-run shops, sports premises and community centres. In addition to waiving fees for the 2019-20 season, we have also reconfigured our £75,000 Bridgend Sports Support Fund - part of the community asset transfer process - to provide immediate financial aid to local sports clubs during the outbreak and help them deal with day-to-day operating costs. The council website provides full details of the wide range of support that is continuing to be made available to businesses and organisations throughout the county borough – visit now to find out about eligibility, how to apply and more. Elsewhere, local recycling centres have reopened, and a number of procedures are in place to keep staff and visitors safe and limit potential exposure to the coronavirus. Only a few vehicles are being allowed in at a time, so queues should be expected, and remember to pre-sort waste before setting off. COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE

Sophia, Elodie and Max (pictured) are young members of Bridgend for Europe. One of their concerns about brexit is the future of the Erasmus student exchange programme, which enables young people to complete part of their studies in a university in another European country. It also enables students from the continent to study in a British university, and most university teachers will agree that a mix of nationalities in a class benefits teaching, learning and social life. While UK ministers express satisfaction at ending “free movement” they neglect to mention that their policy is a two-edged sword. Not only does it prevent visitors from other European countries coming to the UK to spend money as well as time; or to contribute much needed service to, for example, health, social care, hospitality or agriculture; it also prevents UK citizens, including our youngsters, from freely visiting, working in, marrying in or trading with a single market of 500 million friendly people. In this light “taking back control” is an own goal, lose-lose, double-whammy. We owe it to the generation that did not have a vote in the referendum four years ago to put right this injustice. Local history AIR CRASH NEAR WINDSOR ROAD

On Sunday 26th July 1936, a five-seater Short Scion airplane crashed in Porthcawl just missing a row of houses. Miraculously, the pilot and five passengers, including two children, survived. It had been hired by Mr. T. Campbell Black, the world-famous aviator and promoter, to participate in the Empire Air Displays of 1936 wearing the colours of Gaumont British News. Campbell’s Air Displays toured throughout the country from April – September. The airplane was returning to the Lock’s Common flying area, after a flight around Porthcawl, when it was witnessed to lose speed, circle a few times over Severn Road, strike some telegraph wires and then crash into the field, a few yards from garden fences in Windsor Road. It was found that the undercarriage and the propellers were badly damaged and that the doors had jammed on landing with the passengers escaping through a hole in the cabin roof. The five passengers were ‘all reported to be suffering from bruises and slight shock. (Western Mail). However, the pilot, Mr. Richard Fothergill Robinson, 3 Westbourne Grove, London sustained compound injuries to the left leg and was taken to Bridgend General Hospital. As for the aeroplane, sadly it was written off as it was considered damaged beyond repair. Ceri Joseph

WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE On 31 March 1944, as an SOE agent, Alix Marrier d’Unienville parachuted into Loir-etCher from a Halifax aircraft with millions of francs to distribute to the Resistance. She was successful until 6 June 1944 when the Gestapo arrested her in Paris. Held in Fresnes Prison, in solitary confinement, and La Pitié, a place known for its brutal atrocities, on 15 August 1944, Alix was transferred in the last convoy travelling from Romainville to Germany. When Alix reached Marne, the Allies destroyed the railway bridge, so the Gestapo ordered the prisoners to cross a road bridge. In the town square, the prisoners spied a fountain. They ran towards the fountain to drink while the guards ran after them to haul them back. Sensing her opportunity, Alix escaped. At first, Alix entered a house. The occupants were sympathetic and offered her temporary shelter. Later, she hid in a meadow and after that with a woodcutter and his family before the advancing Allies liberated her. Free, she returned to Paris in a jeep. Hannah Howe, international bestselling author of Ann’s War (set in Porthcawl) and Eve’s War (set in France). https://hannah-howe.com

We are looking forward to reopening the school as per government guidance from Monday, 29th June. Schools are to be open for pupils to “Check in, catch up and prepare for summer and September.” As we go to print, we are just finalising detailed plans on how this can be done adhering to the guidelines. Fortunately, we are in a very different position to many schools. In the week before Easter we moved every year group from Nursery to Sixth Form to our Online Learning Programme. Our pupils have benefitted from a fully interactive, structured timetable with the same scheme of work, same high-quality teaching, interaction with their peers and teachers as well as assessment, marking and teacher feedback, without any interruption to their studies. Our guide to online learning is on our website but, of course, we are now busy working on our Reopening Booklet! Our Virtual Open Mornings in June was a great success. If you missed them but would still find out what a difference a St Clare’s education could make for your child, visit our website www.stclares-school.co.uk or contact our friendly Admissions Team who will be available all through the summer holidays. We are so looking forward to welcoming our pupils back to school at the end of June! We are delighted that after weeks of uncertainty, we will have the opportunity to touch base with our learners before the summer break and allay any concerns that they might have before September. As I write this piece, we are finalising the details of exactly this will transpire, and by the time of publication, all pupils will have been contacted with arrangements. In the meantime, PCS pupils mostly from Years 8 and 12 have been involved in an important study being conducted by Dr Michael Ward, Senior Lecturer in Social Studies at Swansea University. ‘Corona Diaries’ is documenting the everyday lived experiences of a global pandemic, to record people’s changing life experiences in the coming weeks and months through their own testimonies and accounts. The experience has been very beneficial for our pupils. With the global shortage of Personal Protective Equipment, the Design and Technology Department continues to pour its talents into making PPE face shields for the local community. Already the school has made and delivered almost a thousand protective visors in the Porthcawl and Bridgend area. Grateful recipients include Cwm Taf Morgannwg nurses, pharmacies, opticians, dentists, nursing homes, vets, care agencies, post office workers and Porthcawl Co-op staff. The school has set up a Go Fund Me page in the hope of covering the costs of the materials, and volunteers will continue making the shields whilst the demand is there. School reports CYNFFIG NEWS

The last month has been filled with different learning experiences for everyone at Cynffig. Pupils have impressed us daily with not only their online learning but with their independent endeavours through our Freestyle IT activities. From baking, to robot making, gardening to knitting our pupils have become accomplished in an abundance of new skills during lockdown. Our Key Stage 3 pupils joined ‘The National Theatre Wales’ mission to get crafty and created 3D sunflowers. To coincide with the summer solstice our pupils’ fantastic artwork was part of a virtual parade called ‘Go Tell the Bees’. To keep Cynffig connected we came together for our ‘Blue for Bravery’ event where staff and pupils wore blue to show our appreciation for the NHS, we have since walked, cycled and run to raise money for charity. Congratulations to Joseph Gray the chairman of our School Parliament who has been singing to lift morale in his community. Catrin Angharad from BBC Radio Cymru selected a video of him singing ‘Myfanwy’ for her weekly music show. Finally, well done to Gethyn Jones who has been selected for the Ospreys under 16’s preliminary training squad we wish you the very best! Hannah Castle Head Teacher

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Following the onset of Covid 19, lockdown and now re-opening, school life has changed dramatically for all of our children. Over the last few months our children have been doing fantastic home/school learning which could not have been accomplished without the love and support from their amazing parents and carers. So as a staff we would like to give all of our families a special mention. You are all stars! Key stage 2 teachers have loved seeing all of the children’s work based on their ‘Passion Project’ which has ranged from surfing, rugby, football, plastic pollution and space to name a few. Some of the children during lockdown have learnt a foreign language and taken part in the Porthcawl pass it on project. One little boy in year 4 has even learnt to cook and has been making meals for his neighbours! Miss Oatley set a task of creating a Banksy piece of artwork relating to lockdown. Lots of children created amazing pieces in lots of different mediums. The children’s work was transformed into a virtual art show, which can be found on our Facebook page and YouTube. It is fabulous to see the different views on lockdown from a child’s perspective. Nursery and reception staff has loved seeing all of the children’s work based on a weekly story. The children have made some fantastic musical instruments and butterfly feeders. Well done everyone! Just a little reminder, if your child is aged 3 before the 31st August 2020 you can enroll online at BCBC for your child’s nursery place. Please email the school on newtonprimaryschool@bridgend.gov.uk where we will keep you updated with our schools settling in process when our current conditions are eased. Stay safe everyone!

Poets corner STAYING SAFE AND IN ISOLATION FOR THE VULNERABLE In this time of pandemic and coronavirus, We all have our rightful needs, Whilst many shops and individuals, Sell extortionate priced items out of greed. Staying safe and in isolation for the vulnerable, For many weeks ahead just hide, Stopping the spread to those who it could affect, Sadly so many have already died. Be patient and follow the guidelines, The two-meter rule is still in place, Far too many idiots not taking any notice, And it’s a massive disgrace. So many people visiting the seaside, And other picturesque coastal places, Still sanitising and wearing latex gloves, Whilst wearing masks across their faces. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

SOUND WAVES

JUST ONE MORE

The mighty ocean serenades the shore, With songs of far-off lands and sun-kissed skies. From gentle strings to full orchestral roar, In seven swells the moon-led rhythms rise. Wind-whipped white horses dance on borrowed time, While seagulls soar on ballerina wings. Our natural world revolves around their chords, Those seven puppet waves on lunar strings.

Just one more look, just one more hug, Just one more chance to say, I miss and love you so much, Each and every day. Just one more special moment, Some extra time with you, To say the things I didn’t say, Is that so hard to do? Just one more laugh, just one more joke, Just to hear your voice again, That’s all I’m asking from you, To take away this pain. Just one more of your sunny smiles, To store inside my heart, To help heal the ache inside me, For each day that we’re apart. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

The mighty waves crescendo on our ears, But as they hit the shore with all their might, They crash into the rocks and granite cliffs, And shatter, tinkling spray into the night. Its spirit broken now the sea retreats Dragging ebbing feet on shingle shore. Takes its time rebuilding strength until Its music can begin again. Encore! Judy Dee, Porthcawl

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MASK If your face is the last face I see Even if it is a strangers face It may not be the right face But it is a lovely face Though it is masked And with eyes that look sad It will be the last face I will see. I have loved and been loved I have met many people that have touched me And they that I have touched I have known the feelings of tenderness And the moments of tears and regret But this feeling is not known to me A feeling that I have not felt before Two people alone who have never met before One whose body is dying and one whose heart is dying. Malcolm Price, Porthcawl

Birthdays are so special Cards and gifts and fun With candles on a scrumptious cake Good will from everyone For each of us are special Hand-made by God, with love And yes, there’s only one like you We’re so glad that you’re alive But now – another birthday Of the church of Christ, God’s Son And we are all invited and Yes, gifts for everyone. No need of cake for candles There’s flames dancing o’er each head And the sound of mighty rushing wind For Christ’s risen from the dead. And He’s moving now in power Wanting everyone to come And celebrate the birthday of The Church of Christ God’s Son. Happy Pentecost! Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

Club features VOLUNTEER HELEN MURDOCH AWARDED GIRLGUIDING’S PRESIGIOUS AWARD

Porthcawl volunteer has been awarded one of the organisation’s highest honours, The Laurel Award. Leaders are nominated by fellow volunteers for making a significant contribution to guiding and demonstrating exceptional leadership skills. Helen has been awarded the Laurel Award for her sparkling Guiding enthusiasm, making everyone she meets feel special and for her boundless energy and support travelling far and wide. She is a true asset to her community! Due to the current government restrictions, Girlguiding Cymru had to cancel their annual awards day so had to come up with an alternative plan! Helen believed she was attending a ZOOM meeting but whilst on the call she was told there was a knock on the door. It was then fellow volunteer Sarah-Jane, practising social distancing, presented her with the exciting news and flowers. On receiving the award Helen said: “I was astonished to receive the Laurel Award –and absolutely thrilled, it is such an honour! I have been involved in Girlguiding most of my life and have gained so much –as well as the adventures, opportunities and challenges, I have met so many wonderful people. And I love sharing this adventure with others, both girls and adults, so that they can experience the Guiding buzz too”.

WHAT IS THE CHURCH? Understanding what the church is is very important. Before I became a Christian I thought the church was the local church building where people went to on a Sunday morning. When I became a Christian however, and spent time studying the bible, I soon realised that the church was not the building at all. The word church in Greek is ekklesia, which actually means to be called out. The word ekklesia also means to congregate. So it means to be called out and called together. What is really interesting about this word church is that it can actually be applied to any group of people in the world that come together for a common purpose. Rugby is a very popular sport in the U.K. and when there are big games on you can literally get thousands of people coming together to watch the game. Now, in it’s basic meaning it could be said that this is church for those people. However, when the word is used in the bible, and in relation with God, it means to be called out of darkness. Obviously that takes on a different meaning all together. Jesus is calling us out of darkness, to himself, as he is the light of the world. A message we all so need to hear at these tunes! THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH What is it that you can’t wait to hear? Is it that tickets have been released for your favourite singer? That the one you love is coming? That a long-expected baby has finally arrived? The writer of the 85th Psalm speaks with the same sense of urgency when they penned, “I can’t wait to hear what God will say!’” Not only is the Psalmist confident that God will speak, the psalmist is also confident about the outcome: “It will bring peace ... to those who turn their hearts toward God.” Why is it so much easier to desire peace than it is to truly turn our hearts toward the God of love and forgiveness? When we are angry, hurt, afraid, or feeling abandoned, it seems easier to turn our hearts to our old feelings and not toward the God of life-giving liberation, hope, and healing. So, what’s it going to be today? The old stuff? Or taking a chance on God? When expressed, the choice sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Because it is. Walk in a new direction, today. Just do it. God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees, Minister to Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL We are pleased to report that we have reopened and are once again providing 7-day cover of the local coastline. In accordance with COVID 19 NCI guidelines, we are currently operating each watch with a single watch keeper and are unable to accept any visitors to the station until further notice. On our first weekend of operation we had two incidents, one involving a swimmer and another involving a surfer. Both incidents were resolved safely. We are also unable to loan tow floats or hoist the warning flags to advise boat traffic of the presence of swimmers in the waters around the lookout, until the Welsh Government relaxes the guidelines on social distancing. Our hours are 1000 to 1900 Monday to Thursday and 0900 to 2100 Friday to Sunday. From July this will be expanded to 0900hrs to 2100hrs daily. We can provide weather reports and updates on local conditions. Call us on 01656 782936 or VHF Ch 65 “Porthcawl NCI”. Similarly, we continue to provide radio checks if required. We thank you for your continued support during these difficult times, especially when our fund-raising efforts have been suspended. We are self-funded and rely on donations to keep our station running. Nick Weedon Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

PORTHCAWL LIONS Although most of our activities and meetings have been ‘locked down’ we are still managing to support a few local charities – the food bank, KPYC – and, remotely, each other. When free to do so we know we will need to get going in a big way and look forward to recover with car boots, books, fayres (?), community support etc. We will also be looking even harder for new members. If you could use new friends or feel an urge in these difficult times to contribute locally and more widely, please contact Jim on 859505. President Joan Cosson is due to handover to Lorrie Desmond Williams and a new committee at the end of June, probably via zoom

Deadline date for the August issue is: Wednesday 15th July

It has been a strange period for us. We were very fortunate to get a pallet away on the 18th of March, the week of the lockdown. Eleven crates represented the work done since the New Year, and comprised of tools for the building trade, carpentry, auto and motorcycle workshops, shoe repair and electrical wiring. All these destined for Malawi. We had a large delivery of tools from Barry collected by David and Adam Cook the same day of dispatch. Rodney Knight came down to sort out a mass of tools that had come in, and four days were spent cleaning out the workshop. We are aware that many people have been clearing out sheds and garages, but regrettably we cannot accept donations of tools until our stocks are cleared. We have been blessed with a donation from Porthcawl Rotary Club, many thanks. Our Workshop will open again as soon as it is deemed safe to do so, and following guidelines. We may stagger the number of volunteers to keep social distancing in the workshop and maybe work the extra day. If you are interested in volunteering, please ring 0165 786367. We may be able to have a surplus tool sale outside in the summer. John Hanson (Group coordinator)

KPC YOUTH & COMMUNITY AGM 2020 KPC will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Weds 29th July 6 pm at 6 pm. Due to current circumstances this will be held as a Zoom meeting. All welcome to join us to find out more about the work undertaken during the last year, and future plans. If anyone is interested in joining our Board of Directors/Trustees please also contact the centre. Please contact the Centre on 01656 749219 or email: info@kpcyouth.com, so that a Zoom invitation can be sent to you prior to the meeting. 30 | seaside news

A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS OF TY ELIS The present situation with corona virus has touched everyone, maybe in different ways. We must all stick to the Government Health guidelines to stay at home, Protect the NHS, and Save Lives. However, we must be mindful of individuals who are selfisolating, and the impact on their mental health and well-being. We offer the following advice: Stick to daily routines, it is important to get up as normal and follow existing routines as far as possible. It may be a good time to adapt routines. Write a “To do “ list to give your day some structure. Consider catching up on jobs you have put off, even minor things, such as reorganizing clothes cupboards. Connect with people, by phone, text, video calls and email. If you do not have access to technology, a simple phone call will brighten your day. Consider scrolling through your phone book and catching up with long-lost friends. Also, connect with people who may be in a similar position to yourself. This will have the double benefit of sharing the “feel good factor”. Keep your mind stimulated: read books, watch films, complete crosswords and sudoku puzzles. Use social media wisely. Not all items are true. Concentrate on well-known sources. Look out for others: a phone call or contact to a friend or neighbour can make a huge difference. Again, we must adhere to the advice of the Government Professionals and, above all, Stay Safe. You can find details of the work and support given to the community by Ty Elis our website, https://www.tyelis.org.uk/, and contact us at 01656 786486 or office@tyelis.org.uk

TRINITY CHURCH The wellbeing of Trinity Members and the people of Porthcawl is our priority but we have all missed the fellowship and worship that form a major part of our life. Our plans in February centred around the opening of our new Bring and Buy stall as well as the many activities which are run at the church. We were looking forward to extra Easter Services and a full programme of Messy Church, Mother and Toddler sessions and Saturday snacks. During Lockdown our minister, Teddy has devised a weekly newsletter, which helps us keep in touch. We also have a weekly audio service created by Teddy and the Worship team. This includes a sermon, prayers and hymns. Please contact us by telephone or the website if you wish to receive a copy. The Pastoral team is also telephoning our vulnerable members and we have embraced modern technology by holding Zoom meetings. Future activities will be dictated by Government guidance with health and safety being the main priority. However we look forward to being able to open the church and meet again as soon as it becomes possible. Until then, please visit our Facebook page and website. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My husband and I recently decided to split and now we are in the midst of the Covid 19 crisis. I desperately want to see a solicitor but know it will be difficult to see one face to face in the office for advice and to start Divorce proceedings. The atmosphere at home is very strained and I do not wish to wait for this crisis to be over. Answer:I truly appreciate how difficult it must be for you especially during this crisis and lockdown. The best of marriages and relationships will be put under strain during this uncertain period. Sadly, we anticipate that Divorces will spike following this crisis given the emotional, mental, physical and financial pressures of covid 19. I recommend that you consider whether it is the right time to send your husband letters from a solicitor and Divorce proceedings when you are both under the same roof, with little space and tensions are high. You may wish to wait. However, if you wish to set the wheels in motion, you can. Whilst the majority of solicitors’ offices are closed to the public, they continue to provide advice and guidance even in these very difficult times. As a firm, we conduct initial consultations over the telephone, MS Teams and Zoom. We are able to continue to give advice by email and telephone conference calls. It is very much business as usual. A new client need only telephone our offices on 01656 750888 and we can arrange a mutually convenient date and time. Our initial consultation is £200 inclusive of VAT for up to one hour payable before or on the day. We can provide you with detailed advice and an action plan, giving you the confidence to move forward and leave an unhappy relationship. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

WORKPLACE BULLYING & HARASSMENT Workplace bullying and harassment can take many forms, some more obvious than others. Examples include: • name calling, sexist remarks, racial slurs, comments about appearance; • offensive office ‘banter’, malicious rumours or controversial humour; • unfair treatment or informal threats of being sacked; • sexual innuendo, advances from a co-worker, or unwanted flirting, including “sexting” or sexual comments made via social media. Harassment is linked to discrimination. It is related to any of the following ‘protected characteristics, Age, sex, disability, race, religion, gender, marriage and civil partnership; Harassing someone from one of these groups is illegal if it violates their dignity, or if it creates a hostile, degrading or offensive environment for them. Bullying is often defined in terms of behaviour that undermines, humiliates, or injures a person. It is not linked to discrimination, so the legal implications are different to harassment. If you feel this is happening to you then raise your concerns with your line manager, union representative or the HR department with evidence to back up your claim if you have it. If the bullying or harassment is affecting your health, visit your doctor. If it is causing you to take time off work sick, ask for a ‘fit note’. Keep a detailed record of every bullying incident and related conversations. Keep any evidence, for example emails from the bully. You should have been given a copy of the company’s written disciplinary and grievance procedure when you started your employment (it may be part of the company handbook) - this should set out the internal steps you can take to address a problem at work such as bullying or harassment. If an informal approach does not work, follow the formal grievance procedure set out in your company’s policy. If you are a member of a trade union, talk to the employee representative about your problem. If you have exhausted all other options and the problem is still not resolved, you can discuss the matter with an employment lawyer who may advise legal action. In some circumstances this may lead to a settlement agreement or as a last resort, an employment tribunal If you resign as a result of bullying or harassment, in certain circumstances you may be able to bring a claim of constructive dismissal against your former employer, based on the fact that the mutual trust and confidence has been broken. But always take legal advice first. SEPARATION AND DIVORCE

SOLICITORS • CYFREITHWYR CONVEYANCING - Moving House? We offer a friendly and efficient service at a fixed price with all the work carried out by a qualified Solicitor Contact Mike Greenway for more information and a written quotation

There are many couples who decide not to divorce but simply to separate. It is commonplace to make a Deed of Separation to record any agreement regarding financial matters, children and plans to divorce. Care needs to be taken before signing any document as this could be relied upon if a divorce takes place at a later date. If you have both received legal advice, the court would prefer not to overturn the agreement at a later date provided that you had both been honest and there has not been any change in your circumstances. When you are living apart, you are classed as separated by the Inland Revenue and by the Benefits Agency. A Judicial Separation is an alternative to divorce. This is not so common but could be considered when there are religious objections to divorce. It follows the same court procedure as divorce and the court retains the power to settle financial disputes with the exception of pension splitting. The court can also settle any disputes regarding children. The main difference is that you no longer have any legal duty to live together but you cannot remarry. This should be carefully considered with your solicitor. In order to obtain a divorce, you have to show the court that the marriage has irretrievably broken down. This means that either one or both of you feel that you cannot stay married to each other. Either of you may apply to the court in England and Wales for the marriage to be dissolved as long as you have been married for one year at least and that one of you has been a resident here for the year before your application is made. You should speak to a solicitor when considering which option will be best for you. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

NEWTON WI Hello to all our members, we hope you are all well and keeping safe during this pandemic. Trust it wont be too long until we can all be together again. We send love to you all and hope to see you soon, keep safe. M Freeman

LALESTON WI I just would like to wish all members of Laleston W.I. All the best during this time and looking forward to the future when we can all meet up again. I am thinking of you all and hoping that you are all well. From President Diane Marshall Lockdown has proved a challenge to club activities but members have been very busy in serving the Community in various ways. Club meetings are continuing by way of ZOOM and even our AGM went ahead with President Sharon chairing the business from her kitchen table (see pic). Several ladies have been putting their sewing skills to good use making scrub bags for the local hospitals and these have been delivered to Princess of Wales by President Sharon. Staff are so grateful and more will be donated in due course. (See pic). Our knitters are also busy producing blankets and shawls for the Dementia ward at POW. Weekly coffee mornings are taking place on line and on Saturday evenings the Glam Squad log on for the G + T Cocktail Hour. All good fun in strange times! Some members who are “shielding” have been receiving delicious cake deliveries from our President who “bakes and takes” weekly. Past President and Guide Leader Helen Murdoch received The Laurel award for her Services to Guiding - one of the highest recognitions in Guiding- and the club is very proud of this achievement. Well done indeed Helen. The club is proving that friendship between members is so valuable in ensuring nobody is alone in this pandemic. Whilst personal contact is not possible for now, telephone chats and video links are proving a vital link with the outside world”. Business & finance DID YOU KNOW?

PENSION TRANSFER ADVICE FEES TO BE PAID UP-FRONT FROM OCTOBER

For sure, the COVID pandemic has turned everything upside down and in many ways has affected many people. Besides the obvious health issue, it’s also very much the financial concerns and issues that have surfaced as a result, ending in a lot of uncertainty. That said, it’s not all doom and gloom, however and we are still hard at work here and getting results for a large number of people, with varying needs. Certainly on the mortgage front there have been many, many changes, sometimes things seem to change every few days. Many lenders are re-evaluating what they offer and individuals cannot hope to know what’s available to them – which is where we step in and do all the work for you, looking at the whole market and what’s out there for you. If you are looking for a mortgage, give us a call and we’ll do our utmost to help. There are also thousands of remortgages due and we can assist with these, even if you have figures from your current lender – we often beat those offers so it’s worth asking. At the time of writing, I must remind all later life borrowers who may already be in Equity Release schemes, please look at your original offer – we have just contacted a client in Swansea whose original deal was set at just over 7% when he did it ten years ago and he is now out of his early repayment penalty period. Since then, interest rates have dropped like a stone and we can now move him to another lender at a rate that will save him some £4,000 in interest in the first year of a new deal, hence preserving greater equity for his family when he passes away. He will get a free valuation of his property too, so overall he can only benefit. YOU may be in a similar position – if that’s the case, a phone call could save you a great deal of money too – 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 will get you through to us for a chat by phone initially. Finally, income protection has been forced into people’s thinking because of the job situation caused by the pandemic – protection of your income is vital and can be a cheap solution depending on your needs – again, a phone call to us will help you understand what you could do to protect your future income.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is to stop allowing contingent charging on Defined Benefits Pension Transfers. What this means to clients is that fees for advice on these transfers will have to be paid up front as opposed to be being paid from the fund itself and the new product provider which has been mostly the case in the past. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this as it does make everything more transparent if it wasn’t clear enough before it will disadvantage those who cannot afford to pay the fees for the advice hence be potentially forced to take their Final Salary/ Defined Benefits Scheme without being allowed to explore other avenues. There’s no doubting that the Defined Benefits Scheme is probably best suited to most as it guarantees their income in retirement. In moving the funds to an investment environment there will be an element of future risk but it does give the client greater flexible and choice with their own funds. Where Transfer Value Analysis Reports have been carried out in the past the results have not always been conclusive and in a high percentage of cases the client would have been advised not to proceed with the transfer and not charged for the advice in the majority of cases. Now the client will not have the choice but will have to pay for this advice when they didn’t previously. I can think of numerous cases where this would have seriously disadvantaged clients when a transfer would have been beneficial but they couldn’t have afforded the up front cost. Take for example a Defined Pension which pays £4,000 p.a. pension and £2,000 widows pension for life, this fund would be worth around £100,000 and a client might want access it to allow more flexible income or leave the whole fund to his family on death. If they have to pay several thousand pounds for the advice up front they probably wouldn’t do it and potentially disadvantage themselves. If anyone needs advice on pension transfers I suggest they do it now before October when the rules change. We can refer you to a pension specialist without obligation. Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

July sees Laleston Gardening Club still closed in the main. However, the Click & Collect service has prevailed providing our members with a local source of gardening products. We are hopeful we may be able to open the shop shortly as the law allows. A few of the Committee members have done some tidying duties in Cliff Cottage gardens, socially distancing of course. The maintenance of our lovely old building continues with the fitting of some very nice new doors, including fire doors to keep us safe. July is the time to sow perennial seeds like delphiniums or for taking cuttings from your favourites to increase your plant stocks. Lettuce can be sown and this is the last month for a crop of later carrots. With dead heading to be done to keep those annuals, roses etc flowering well through the summer season there’s lots to keep us busy in the garden. Stay safe everyone and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook. Susan Ford

Deadline date for the August issue is: Wednesday 15th July

email your report info@seasidenews.co.uk

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB It is said that deep summer is when laziness finds respectability, whoever said that obviously wasn’t a gardener! (Nice idea though) Cut some lavender for drying, chose newly opened flowers for the best fragrance, then hang in a cool dark place, wonderful, you can have the smell of summer in the middle of winter! Take your large leaved houseplants out into the garden, for a treat, and hose them down, to clean off any dust and like us they like a nice shower! Water tomatoes regular, they are very thirsty plants, so for a good crop you need to pander to them. “There are only two things money can’t buy, true love and home grown tomatoes” (John Denver) I do like a nice lawn, sharp edges promote growth, the way to keep grass in good condition is with a high cut twice a week rather than scalping it once a fortnight (Honest it doesn’t need a lockdown haircut!) Did you know Larkspur is the July flower, in Transylvania it was placed in stables to stop witches casting spells on the animals! White ones mean happiness, purple ones first love, but don’t give pink ones to your partner they mean fickleness! Chris Early

Arts & music STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Well, with lockdown still on at the time of writing, there’s not much news to bring you. I still can’t see many shows being up and running before next year. I think the entertainment world will be last on the list if and when we ever get free of this virus. I had a call from a great promoter friend who was telling me the loss his company has made after they had to cancel their 3-day music festival. It really is a worry and I fear a lot of music venues and festivals won’t return. There are a couple of top local bands who’ve brought out new videos (filmed before lockdown) so why not check them out on their Facebook page: Last Flight to Pluto released “Red Pill” and if you look closely you will see yours truly in it. Also, Just Drive, a band I’ve been pushing, are back with a new song and video called “Someone to Love” and it’s definitely worth a listen. Well, that’s all for now, stay safe and keep your music news coming. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

The last few months of lockdown have had a huge impact on the film and television industry, with production all but grinding to a halt, including the all-important post-production facilities. For those of us who still shoot traditional film, whether 16mm or 35mm, Kodak Lab based in Pinewood Studios stopped processing because with most production work at a standstill, there was little material being shot to be processed and the machinery is expensive to run and requires a high turnover of film to go through the system to make it cost-effective. Cinelab London in Slough, though, has kept going in a reduced capacity to cater for those film-makers who have, with some ingenuity and luck, still been working. As lockdown in Wales has been applied more rigorously and for longer, I am uncertain when I will be able to resume shooting my Llandow Air Disaster film, and our changed world requires a few 42 | seaside news

email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk revisions to the shooting script because several locations that were envisaged at the time of writing are now in question – but whoever said that making a film was easy? It was a very close competition with Heather Roper winning the trophy with three excellent images, congratulations Heather. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us, we usually meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR but our meetings are currently suspended due to the Coronavirus situation so we’re currently holding competitions etc. online instead. SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE SURF REPORT ‘Locals only’. Remember the unpopular saying of locals only. Well during lockdown period, we had a few small surf days at Ogmore by sea and indeed it was Locals only. Because, no one from the Cities and towns was allowed to travel. There still seemed to be enough people in the water to say the surf was full. Disappointingly there seemed to be a percentage of people in the village turning against their own on social media. As usual, people who know nothing about the sport of surfing were cussing surfers in 1ft waves for being spreaders or risking the NHS. It is evident that there are people in our lives who do so little themselves they seem to understand nothing that goes on outside their window. And as soon as they can point the finger they do. In reality, a lot of the local families and some keen local surfers had a splash around in the sea. The great outdoors and exercise is the best way to stay healthy and fit and get your vitamin D and happy UV. Exercising outside is important for health and thus less visits to the NHS. David A. Batten

It’s been a long time since Porthcawl Runners have been able to meet up and run together. We know that running supports our member’s health both mentally and physically so we’ve been trying to think of ways to stay motivated and keep running ‘together’ while we’re apart. Last month we decided to complete a ‘virtual relay’ to Porthcawl’s Twin Town of Saint Sebastien sur Loire in France! The 2002km journey started early on Monday morning and saw us reach Dover in time for the first ferry on Tuesday morning. Then after a hot day’s running we arrived at our destination on Tuesday evening - just in time for a welcome party hosted by Bernard du Soulier, the Chairman of the SSSL Town Twinning Committee! A bit of a slower start on Wednesday (maybe something to do with the amazing virtual hospitality) saw us just miss the last ferry but we set off early on Thursday and arrived back in Porthcawl just before dusk. 119 of our runners took part and some even dressed up for their leg. All in all it was a great week and we’re hoping to arrange an actual visit in the future. Lucy Jones

PORTHCAWL RNLI CREW RESCUE CAPSIZED KAYAKER

Tide times high tide: larger number (m)

low tide: lower number (m)

JUL AUG 2020

Sport reports

The kayaker was with a friend but had been unable to get back onto his kayak after capsizing. The charity’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Rose of the Shires was launched on service in calm seas with South Easterly winds of force 3-4. The crew quickly located the casualty and took both him and his friend onboard. Despite being cold from being in the water, the capsized kayaker required no further medical attention. Both kayakers were taken back to the beach at Sandy Bay where the volunteer crew was met by Porthcawl Coastguard Team. Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthcawl, Phil Missen MBE said, ‘The kayakers had a mobile phone and were able to call 999 to contact the UK Coastguard for help. Despite the challenges of search and rescues during the Covid-19 pandemic, our lifeboat crew volunteers have been operational throughout and are ready to drop everything at a moments notice to aid those in peril at sea.’ Chris Cousens, Water Safety Lead for the RNLI in Wales said: ‘With changes to Welsh Government rules from Monday 1 June, we urge the Welsh public to remember the following safety advice: Stay in familiar surroundings and follow the Welsh Government advice. Do not put yourself, your family and emergency services at risk by taking risks or assuming it ‘won’t happen to you’. If you do see someone at risk call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’ Chris Cousens said: ‘If you are heading out for a coastal walk, make sure it is safe before you go. Always check the tide times and conditions before you set off and while out, be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on the tide direction. Ask for local advice and look out for safety signs. Always carry a means of calling for help and know to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if you or someone else is at risk.’ Please follow our safety advice to protect yourself and your loved ones: 1. Take care when walking near cliffs, keep dogs on leads 2. Check the weather forecast and tide times 3. If you fall into the water unexpectedly, FLOAT TO LIVE. Fight your instinct to thrash around, lean back, extend your arms and legs, and Float 4. Check your equipment and wear a lifejacket if you’re going afloat and have a means for calling for help In a coastal emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Tide Times are BST adjusted (so no need to add an hour!). The time you see above is correct
