Arthur Youlten Dear Editor, On the 28th April, Arthur Youlten, sadly suffered a fatal heart attack in Trinity Church, despite the best efforts of the people there who tried to save him. Arthur, aged 73, was the chef for the Trinity Luncheon Club and whilst clearing up after serving all the lunches, he unexpectedly collapsed. His family would just like to thank all those from Trinity who were involved, along with the ambulance service, for the valiant attempts to keep him with us. Arthur was a wonderful, community spirited gentleman, involved with not only the Trinity Luncheon club, but who also volunteered with the Porthcawl RNLI, was an active member of the Bridgend and District Model Engineering Society (BDMES), regularly played snooker at Griffin Park and who was part of the backbone at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church - playing his guitar every Sunday in Mass and organising and catering for many functions there over the years. He was also a dedicated family man and had just become a proud Grandfather for the third time, but unfortunately will never see his Grandson reach his first birthday and beyond. He also left behind his wife Sally, three daughters, Carol, Mary and Rachel, a son, Peter and two granddaughters, Emily and Abbie, not to mention his many other relatives and countless friends and parishioners. His family would also like to thank everyone for their kind messages of support and their attendance at his funeral, held on Tuesday 12th May in Our Lady Star of the Sea, followed by a cremation at Margam Crematorium. It was a beautiful service and the family was very touched by the very good turnout. So, goodbye Arthur and thank you for everything you gave to Porthcawl. Blind Drive Challenge

Refurbishment Of The Rest Home?

Dear Editor, One of the hardest things about losing my sight 20 years ago was handing back my driving licence. I thought I’d never take the wheel again - until I entered a Blind Drive Challenge at Llandow. The event, run by Guide Dogs Cymru, allowed people like me with sight loss to whizz round the race track and test our maneuvering skills, under the guidance of an AA instructor in a dual-controlled car. I can’t tell you how exhilarating it felt after all that time. Sighted friends also took the challenge in blindfold - but they tell me I was the fastest. I reached 70mph and overtook two cars! It was so much fun that I’m planning to do it all again in September when the event returns to Llandow - in aid of Guide Dogs Cymru. My own guide dog, Leo, has changed my life and I’ll be raising as much sponsorship as I can to thank the charity for providing him. Why not sign up for the ride of your life this September and try driving blindfold? If you’re 14 or over, book your place on 0845 372 7405 or email cymru-mt@guidedogs.org.uk. Can you beat 70mph? Sue Taylor, Broadlands

Dear Editor, I read in a recent Seaside News about the restoration of the Lookout Tower, Customs House and other properties around Porthcawl Harbour. What about the Rest Home? Surely Bridgend Council could do something to salvage this beautiful listed building, other than let it degenerate into oblivion? This was such a useful building to so many people. Apart from it being a caring holiday home for so many sick people, it catered for many activities with ample parking space. I played the piano for the U3A singing group for many happy years. The piano I played was a donation to the people of the Rest Home where concerts and services were held in the main hall. I have often wondered where that piano is now? I still grieve over it – it was such a joy to play. Mrs N Davies, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, I have enclosed some photos, which I would like to share with your readers, taken with my 35mm Olympus camera. Two of the photos are of the 50th Anniversary Christmas Swim – a lovely bright sunny morning. The other two were taken recently as the sun set on Porthcawl seafront. Judith Holden, Porthcawl

SCHOOLS French Student Exchange

This year, at Porthcawl Comprehensive School we have decided to take on a project never done before. For the first time ever, 24 of our students in Year 10, 11 and 12 are involved in a French Student Exchange with a large comprehensive school in Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire, near Nantes, called La Joliverie. The two schools have worked closely for many months to make sure this project became a reality. The French students arrived in Porthcawl on March 19th and stayed until March 27th. During their time with us, lots of activities and visits were organised to make them feel welcome and learn about the Welsh culture including a visit to St Fagans and Big Pit. The students also enjoyed a social evening at the Hi-Tide where they were joined by members of the Twinning Association (PSSTTA). This Student Exchange will certainly cement the wonderful links that already exist between Porthcawl and Saint-Sébastien-surLoire and for the students - who knows - it may well lead to overseas friendships that could last a life time! We are already planning the next exchange and we hope more and more students will get involved. Mrs G Morgan (teacher of French at PCS)

Pil Primary Our Year 5 and 6 pupils started the Summer Term with an amazing three-day experience with PGL at Tregoyd House in Brecon. The children spent their time enjoying a variety of outdoor activities, including kayaking, climbing, abseiling and so much more. The visit was a huge success and we were extremely proud of the impeccable behaviour and positive attitude displayed by everyone. As well as the chance to try new activities the children also learnt about perseverance, team work and overcoming fears. Well done everyone! N Pryce Head Teacher

Seaside News | 12

Corneli Primary News Now that ‘Spring has Sprung’ our Environment Club members and their parents have been out working hard in our Sensory garden. The Corneli scouts, aiming for their Community Badge, have given us invaluable help in our mission to blitz and revamp the garden, which we are hoping to make a place of beauty. Growing too are our savings through the Credit Union, which has started up in school. A free piggy bank is given to each pupil opening a savings account and every Thursday they can pay in as much or as little as they want. In time pupils will be running this themselves - good experience for our bankers of the future. As part of the Osprey’s Schools Programme, years 5 and 6 children visited the Sony factory. They went on a tour, saw the latest in high definition technology and had great fun in front of a green screen which made them part of a Harry Potter scene. The next visit is to the Liberty stadium, which they are very excited about. With the Government tests behind us, sports day practise has begun in earnest and we can now look forward to our fast approaching end of term activities. Sue Jones Corneli Primary School

Porthcawl Comprehensive School

There is a lot to celebrate in the music department this summer! Music is flourishing at PCS where five pupils were recent finalists in the annual Margam Foundation Music Competition; Imogen Kent, Lauren Pugh, Peter Sloggett, Harriet Maine and Thomas Phillips. All performed professionally exhibiting a great spirit of camaraderie. After great deliberation, Head Boy, Thomas Phillips, was awarded first prize. Imogen and Harriet also have good reason to celebrate having passed their Grade 8 Percussion exam with distinction. The National Youth Orchestra of Wales holds auditions throughout the country for players of Grade 8 ability and above. A place in the orchestra is difficult to secure, but Alistair Noden, Imogen Kent and Alexandra Hunt were all successful and will attend a ten day course in the University of Wales, Lampeter prior to a concert tour in August. The String Group will take part in the Flower Festival at All Saints Church on Saturday 20th June and will also be performing in the Millennium Centre on Sunday 12th July. There are 17 members in the group – 7 being Grade 8 standard and above! This exceptional year for Music at PCS has also seen Year 10’s Layla Millar winning the Maesteg Gleemen Bridgend Singer of the Year Junior Competition with Lucy Vinen finishing third in the Senior – Well done to all! SCHOOLS Porthcawl Primary News After months of work around our school the ‘Safe Route To School’ has finally been completed. Our brand new bike shelter is complete and is being filled with bikes every day. We now also have brand new cycle routes all around our school. All of this is probably why we did so well in ‘The Big Pedal’ this month. So many of our pupils and parents made an effort to ride into school every day and our school was full of bikes, scooters and even a unicycle! Overall we came 95th in the UK, 7th in Wales and 2nd in Bridgend. Well done everyone who rode into school! We are now well into our ‘Hoodwinked’ rehearsals. Robin Hood, Maid Marion, The Sheriff of Nottingham and Little John have all been cast and are working hard to learn their lines. electrophoresis equipment which is used to separate samples. This was made possible by the universities school liason, Dr. Karen Reed, who is herself a past pupil. This was highly beneficial to the students, as they could practically carry out the techniques that they would only have learned in theory. Year 12 Biology students have also visited the Dept. of Biosciences at Cardiff University. This gave them an insight into university science courses and the facilities available to them, should they choose this pathway in further education. The students attended workshops involving DNA replication and protein synthesis. They were also given a tour of the department and were told about the work carried out by Dr Reed, involving research into colon cancer. This was an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience of working and using the facilities in the university laboratories. Linda Harpwood School Manager

Pyle PCSO News PCSO’S Kyle Maiden, Richard Couch and Richard Matthews attend Afon Y Felin Primary School every Monday and coach Football to the children there. The children ages range from 7 to 9. The primary School is situated in the middle of the Marlas estate North Cornelly, which is proven to be a neglected area by the government. PCSO Maiden said “It’s great for us to engage with the children and at the same time improve their football skills. All the children who attend live on the Marlas Estate, which is a hot spot area for anti social behaviour. I believe that with us engaging with them in school, it will give them a face to recognise outside of school and would provide them with a chance to further engage and interact with each other, over a hobby that can also help keep them fit and healthy.” PCSO Kyle Maiden 55667 Pyle Police Station, Bridgend Mobile 07825503907 Email kyle.maiden@south-wales.pnn.police.uk

Safer cycling for Corneli School Pupils Whether they choose to walk, cycle or scoot, it is absolutely essential that our young people are able to travel to and from school safely. So I was delighted to visit Corneli Primary School recently to see the completion of a Welsh Government ‘Safe Routes in Communities’ scheme which has enabled the council to install two large bike sheds as well as a new cycle route alongside the playing field, route signage and dropped kerb access within the school grounds. The sheds have room for around 40 bikes, and scooters too, and were full on the day that I visited, despite the weather not being particularly bike-friendly! Those pupils who will be moving up to Cynffig Comprehensive will also be pleased to see that the ‘Safe Routes in Communities’ scheme has funded improvements there too which include a new bike shed. The Corneli scheme also complements the Marlas community access route and increases accessibility to the local cycle network. It is important to remember that schemes such as these don’t just benefit school pupils either as they are available for the whole community, giving local people the option to travel in a healthier way and be less reliant on cars. SCHOOLS St Clare’s News We are well into exam season at St. Clare’s now, with many of our students having already sat the majority of their GCSE, AS and A Level exams. It has been a very busy few months leading up until the exams, and we would like to congratulate our students on their dedication and strong work ethic. Our older students have come to the end of their time at St. Clare’s, and many of them have been with us since Nursery. St. Clare’s is a school for life, and there are few other children in the local area who can boast a 16 year career in the same school. We wish all pupils who are leaving us this summer the very best with their future education and careers. In the Prep School, pupils in Years 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed their trip to “PGL” (Parents Get Lost) in Brecon. The group of pupils and teachers had a wonderful weekend which was jampacked full of activities such as quad biking, climbing and raft building. Our next Open Day takes place on Thursday 25th June. If you are interested in having a look around our grounds and meeting our fantastic teachers, please book a place. Whether your children are in Nursery, Prep School, Senior School or Sixth Form, I look forward to meeting you and talking you through our approach to individualised learning. To book a place at the Open Day please telephone (01656) 789966. Simon Antwis, Headmaster

We were very pleased that so many children brought donations in for us to sell and very happy that everybody was so keen to send their money! It was a fantastic day and we were so pleased to be able to support others in less fortunate circumstances than ourselves. SCHOOLS Kenfig Pool Beaver Cub Scout Fun Day

1st Nottage Scout Colony hosted a district fun day on Sunday 10th May at Kenfig Pool Nature Reserve. The day was a resounding triumph with nearly 200 beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers participating in fun events, like shelter building, orienteering, space hopper racing and bug hunting. Many of the children enjoyed the more messy challenges like smoothy making, the mud run and the pond dipping. A huge thank you goes to our Young Explorer helpers and all our leaders and parents who helped throughout the day. Great fun was had by all! Every participator received a goody bag for all their effort. Many thanks to our brilliantly supportive parents and leaders without whom such fun days would not occur. We look forward to many more adventures in the coming year! Anne Davidson

Nottage Primary News Yet another busy month at Nottage, with lots of things going on. Year 5 went on their annual residential PGL trip to Tregoyd House in the Brecon Beacons. The children experienced three exciting days of adventure and returned home with many a tale to tell. The staff returned home, collapsed and slept for a whole weekend! Year 6 are looking forward to their annual Belgium week which takes place early in June. This year we have twinned with Llancarfan Primary School for the visit. The trip includes excursions to the WW1 Cemeteries, the Menin Gate, Bellewaerde Park and a chocolate factory shop! Well done to our Year 5 Road Safety Challenge Team of Anousha Cronje, Eleni Jones, Ben Pownall and Jack Phillips, who came 6th out of the 48 schools that competed this year. A big thank you to their coaches Marie Jones, Etienne Cronje and Boyd Pownall. Another big thank you to our fantastic PTA for funding an array of musical instruments, ‘Mud Kitchens’ for the Foundation Phase and planters for the lower Key Stage 2 patio area where Mr Barrett’s gardening club are doing such a great job. Afon y Felin News Our governors work really hard behind the scenes, attending regular meetings and ongoing training, all voluntarily. Our Vice Chair, Ms Pearce has collated evidence of this, and as a result, they have been awarded the Bronze Quality Award for Governing Bodies. Our children had a special assembly, ‘Meet the Lifeguard’. The RNLI taught the pupils all about safety whilst at the beach. They now know what the different colour flags mean to ensure safety, which is so important. The Willows went to The Swansea Maritime Museum as part of this term’s theme, Land Ahoy! They were met by Pirate Dai, and were shown how the crew measured the speed of the ship in knots, how the compass was used, some children tried on the pirate’s hat. There was a treasure hunt and a craft session, it was a truly enjoyable educational lesson. PC Steve talked to The Cedars about the dangers of alcohol, particularly in alcopops. They tried on special glasses to imitate the effects of drinking. A big thank you to the PFA, who have been working hard all year to raise money to pay for a school trip to Folly Farm. AJ Pritchard – Parent Governor

West Park Primary This month we’d like to dedicate our article to supportive parents and carers. With a hundred and one things to juggle at home our families still find the time to support us in many ways, which enables us to run a happy and welcoming school. Whether it be contributing to trips and fundraising events or dedicating time to help out at school or from home, we are always grateful for the support. We are in the process of setting up a Parent Forum to further engage with our families and are looking forward to new partnerships evolving. The cross country season had concluded – thanks must go to Mrs Hancock and Miss Holland as well as our fantastic runners. We’re hoping for a medal or two to celebrate. There are plans in the pipeline for a fantastic outdoor scientific learning area – very exciting! School trips and transition coming up this month. Mr I Bird

News Increasing Concern Over So-Called ‘Legal Highs’ I was really pleased to see that a recent joint operation between Bridgend County Borough Council and South Wales Police resulted in a local business being prosecuted for selling psychoactive substances and advising customers on how to use them. The sale of so-called ‘legal highs’ is a matter of huge concern as they are packaged and marketed in such a way as to evade consumer protection and drug laws - often featuring vague descriptions such as ‘research chemicals’ or ‘room deodorisers’. But recent well-publicised incidents have aptly demonstrated that anyone who abuses these products is playing Russian roulette with their health and their life. They come in powder form, pills and herbal materials, and have caused users to experience breathing difficulties, heart palpitations, hallucinations, seizures and even comas. So don’t be fooled and stay on your guard – there is nothing remotely legal about using these products to get high, and you can never be sure about what it is you are taking or what the side effects will be. Anyone with concerns about the supply of ‘legal highs’ can contact Trading Standards on 01656 642643 or by emailing trading.standards@bridgend.gov.uk You can also report it to South Wales Police by calling 101. #HearMyVoice Initiative I was privileged recently to attend the re-launch of the Swansea Sound and The Wave #HearMyVoice campaign at a Swansea Primary School. The campaign aims to tackle the issue of bullying and raise awareness about the problem. The initiative is supported by many anti-bullying organizations, as well as Swansea City Football Club and the Ospreys. Swansea Sound and The Wave are looking to roll this campaign out across as many schools as possible and are working with their sister radio stations to try and make it a nationwide campaign. It looks at the devastating impact bullying is having on young lives across Wales. The radio station has taken an in-depth look at the problem of bullying, how victims feel, why bullies do it and how professionals are dealing with the problem. This is an important initiative that will help many children as they progress through their school lives. It is heart rendering but necessary to hear the experiences of children and young people who have been bullied. It is great to know that the #HearMyVoice campaign has provided them with the support they need and will continue to prevent bullying from occurring in their school. News Cutting Down On The Carbon Footprint

News From Porthcawl Town Council

Outstanding efforts by residents have once again seen recycling services in Bridgend County Borough ranked among the best in the UK when it comes to ‘carbon benefits’. With 57 per cent of local waste recycled every week, fewer carbon emissions are being produced. A saving of 93 kilograms of carbon per person during 2013-14 means we are among the top 10 per cent of areas that recycle in the UK. As landfill sites produce methane, cutting down on the amount of rubbish we send there helps to reduce greenhouse gases that escape into the atmosphere. Making new products out of recycled items also uses far less energy than would be required if manufacturing them from raw materials. So the message is that less landfill means less pollution, and the more households that take part in the kerbside collection scheme, the bigger the benefits will be. A big thank you is due to everyone who recycles in the county borough. Don’t forget that you can order new recycling containers and bags by contacting the council on 01656 643643 or emailing your details to: talktous@bridgend.gov.uk, and you can also cut down on the amount of junk mail you receive by signing up to www.mpsonline.org.uk

It’s Good To Talk With the election starting to fade from most peoples’ memory, I was reflecting about how our democracy actually works and what is important. Elections are not about personality contests between leaders, or who can get the best headline on a newspaper – they come down to conversations with people. No campaign would be able to function without the dedication and of volunteers. Unlike some countries, our elections are not bought and sold on television advertising, but are won by people walking through streets, knocking on doors and talking to residents. There is a good chance that you will have been contacted by at least one representative from a party recently. Although some may complain about this, the reaction of most people is of pleasure that their views were being sought out, they were being put at the heart of the discussions. It is impossible to knock on every door, but the conversations over the last month gives an important insight into how people are feeling and what people want for the future. We are all better for it I will keep that conversation going in street and supermarket surgeries this summer. Madeleine Moon MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

FEATURES Wood You Believe It?

Porthcawl Museum

Many readers will remember a recent article regarding Porthcawl Rotary Club’s International Evening held at the Hi Tide. The Club entertained students from Atlantic College and proceeds from the evening were destined to help former Porthcawl priest, Father Cashin, with a water project in Nalwei, Zambia. The Rotary Club of Porthcawl is extremely pleased to have just received a very special Thank You card from Father Cashin. The image above shows the front of the card and was handmade by a Nalweian out of wood chippings. Father Cashin’s message read: “I am so grateful to Rotary for the support and kindness shown in helping with the development in this very poor region of Africa. I wish to acknowledge with much gratitude to Rotary Porthcawl, the donation of £1,272 - a matching District 1150 Grant towards the water supply for the local Clinic (Hospital) and the new Maternity Unit at Nalwei, Zambia.” Also in the Club’s news is that people donated generously to the Shelter Box for Nepal Appeal at the Lion’s May Fayre at All Saints on the May Bank holiday. Once again, Porthcawl Rotary Club is touched by the generosity of local people who can make such a difference to people worldwide. Ivor Williams

After all the excitement last year of preparing for the commemoration of the outbreak of the Great War, we have come closer to the present day in celebrating VE Day 70 marking the 70th anniversary of the cessation of hostilities in Europe. So during the summer of this year Porthcawl Museum will be displaying a VE Day exhibition alongside the on-going WW1 exhibition (not forgetting the Trench Experience), while in the yard at the back you can see what those of us who are of an older generation experienced in our childhood - the Anderson Shelter, and a reminder of the ‘Dig For Victory’ campaign, in the WW2 Victory Garden. Also on display is a reminder of the time when the Old Police Station was a working police station - the old Police Station’s Wash House, set in the 1880’s, a display which has already caused some of our visitors to reminisce about their own childhood experiences of Monday wash days. The 18th century cannon is still on display, awaiting restoration, and still causing considerable excitement. So, it is clear this Summer 2015 @ Porthcawl Museum will have something for everyone, young or old - please give us your support. Brian Lowman Porthcawl Museum

Care Home Donates To Local Charities Residents at RMBI Albert Edward have been donating to the church fund for many years and supported numerous causes. This year three very deserving local charities have benefited and Church Warden Susan Barnes proudly presented three £250 cheques to their representatives. The first of which was The Sandville Self Help Centre a cheque was presented to Sister Gwyneth Poacher MBE, SRN. This money will go towards helping the Sandville with its motto of never turning anyone away. Secondly our residents had been made aware of a very wonderful young lady named Jessica Price. Jess who has been suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukaemia spent much of the last few months in hospital sedated whilst also battling Neutrapenic Sepsis. Jess is now on the road to recovery and would like to give back to all those charities that have helped her. Lastly our third and final donation was made to Porthcawl Town Athletic Football Club. Pat Farrow, secretary of the club, accepted the cheque. She explained to our residents how the 60 volunteers that the club has allows children from age six right through to university and beyond enjoy playing football and building friendships. This money will allow for 10 managers to attend First Aid Training to ensure the safety of our children. A total of £750 was donated and I am sure you would like to join me in saying a big thank you to the residents of RMBI Albert Edward for supporting these worthwhile causes. FEATURES Joint Day Of Fellowship

Bridgend Parkinson’s Coffee Morning

26 members and friends, including 10 from Bridgend RC, met at the Coach and Horses in Llangynidr, near Crickhowell between 10:30 and 11:00 on a recent Saturday morning. This gave an opportunity to provide the pub with lunch orders and /or have a cup of coffee, and also to meet everyone from both localities prior to setting out on the walk at 11.00am. The four and a half mile, two hour walk was ably led by a Cheltenham Member, and covered road, fields and a very pleasant canal path for the return to the pub. A very good lunch was enjoyed in the pub, with good opportunity for fellowship. The Presidents of both Clubs expressed their appreciation for this combined fellowship. A Bridgend Member provided instructions and guidance on how to proceed to the

Bridgend Parkinson’s Group would like to thank everyone who supported our Coffee Morning at the Heronston Hotel recently. We raised an amazing sum of £800. We are truly grateful to all. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 10th of June 2pm-4pm at LLys Faen Community Room, Quarella Road, Bridgend (opposite the old Tesco). We have various speakers and we provide refreshments. All welcome and we are always looking for volunteers for our table top sales. For more information please contact Julia Phillips on 01656 668312. Julia Phillips

Sugarloaf Vineyard where everyone met at around 15:00. This provided time for refreshments, a DIY tour of the vines and also, an opportunity to sample four of the wines. There was ample space for everyone to sit down around tables for further inter-club fellowship. The successful and enjoyable day ended, for a few, with dinner at the Angel Hotel in Abergavenny. Y Cefn Gwyrdd

The Gwyrdd was blessed with glorious spring weather on the first of its walks this year. We met at the history wall at the top of Bedford Road and walked down to One Elm where we entered one of the many fields now owned by Natural Resources Wales. The fields, now known as Cefn Cribwr Meadows, include several Sights of Special Scientific interest. They are regularly managed and lead down to the Cwsc and signal box. Hopefully it will be made an official Nature Reserve in the near future. That this area exists at all is largely due to the work of Steve Moon, ecological Officer for Mid Glamorgan who lived in Cefn for a while. When the Gwyrdd approached him many years ago, his enthusiasm for the plant diversity to be found here eventually resulted in the purchase of this land. Sad to say, I attended Steve’s funeral recently, but Cefn Cribwr Meadows remain as a tribute to one man’s love of nature. Our walk continued through the Cwsc and Parc Slip Nature Reserve where we enjoyed a cuppa and toasted teacake in the excellent centre cafe. Interested in “Gwyrdd” activities? FEATURES News From The Talbot

Leap Second On 30th June

The Talbot has started two new projects over the last few months, a group meeting (Silver Waves) for the over fifties, held on the first Tuesday afternoon of every month, and a weekly table top sale, every Thursday from 10am til midday. We are very busy with day trips and evening functions planned during the summer months. Our Cotswolds trip is full, but we have some tickets left for our Sixties evening in September. With the help of our board of directors, management committee and volunteers, we can manage, but if any readers would like to become volunteers, they are welcome to contact us. Many people who visit and/or speak to us still think that the Talbot belongs to the local borough council, but this is not so. The Talbot Community Centre is a stand-alone charity owned by the community, managed by the community and used by members of the community. Should you wish to know more, why not visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk or e-mail us at talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk. Our telephone number is 01656 749754 or you could pop in and see for yourselves what we do at the Talbot. Cheryl Butcher

Atomic clocks keep more accurate time than the Earth’s rotation, which can speed up and slow down because of tides and changes within its core. To get clocks back into synchronization with the Earth, an extra second is periodically added to Universal Time (UTC), the world’s benchmark time standard. Scientists have announced that a leap second will be required on June 30th. The previous one was in 2012, but that didn’t go entirely smoothly because a lot of web sites did not know how to cope with the extra second. Some countries want to get rid of leap seconds altogether, saying that they are too disruptive to precise systems used for navigation, communication and other services. But others, like Britain, have argued that it is risky to allow a divergence to develop between the time kept by atomic clocks and that of the Earth’s rotation. In any case, fewer leap seconds are being added nowadays than a few decades ago. Between 1972 and 2000, a total of 22 leap seconds was invoked, but since the millennium we have only needed four. Since the 1970s the Earth has speeded up a little bit. Clive Down Bridgend Astronomical Society

Tools For Africa Tools for Self Reliance

Through Christian Eyes

Our photo shows Ana Arute Josephin working away happily in her kitchen workshop. Ana had a hard life as a youngster in Uganda and struggling to feed her family on the poor soil. After completing her training as a seamstress and with help from Tools for Self Reliance she is now able to produce clothing for sale. From the picture, you will notice the old treadle sewing machine has been upgraded by local craftsmen. Yes, we also need electric sewing machines as many villages now have electricity. Eight different makes are now accepted. They must be in working order and heavy. Hand machines continue to be sent. We do not want shuttle machines. We are grateful to Pam Murden who processes all our haberdashery kits. Anything haberdashery related is very welcome. Porthcawl Rotary has been very generous in helping pay for our latest projects. We thank everyone for the generous support and for keeping us supplied with suitable tools for renovation. In order to process what we have donated a few more volunteers for our workshop would be very welcome. If anyone is interested please ring 01656 786367. John Hanson Group Coordinator

CAP (Christians Against Poverty) are doing great work of helping people out of debt and breaking the cycle of poverty. CAP was started by John Kirby in 1996 following his own period of struggling with and finally overcoming his own major debts problems. Since then it has grown into an international charitable organisation helping thousands of people solve their money problems and rebuild their lives both in the United Kingdom and overseas. While CAP is unashamedly Christian, it helps everyone, free of charge, regardless of age, gender, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation or religion. It is funded by Christians and churches and is a great example of the Christian principle ‘love your neighbour as yourself’. Alongside the free debt counselling and support, CAP also increasingly run Money Management Courses, Job Clubs and addiction Release Groups. In our Bridgend area there are CAP Debt Centres in both Bridgend and Kenfig Hill, and a Money Management Course in Porthcawl. If you think you could benefit from their help you can contact CAP at their head offices on 01274 760720 or check them out online at capuk.org. Don’t let the loan sharks or the exorbitant repayment rates ruin your life forever. Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

Trinity Luncheon Club Following the sudden and very sad death of Arthur Youlten, our chef at Trinity Luncheon Club, the Club will re-start on Tuesday 2nd June at 12.30pm with our new cooks, Pam and Paul. We look forward to welcoming all of our members.

FEATURES Heathbridge Miners’ Square

Porthcawl Inner Wheel News

Pyle Community Council is delighted the number of plaques on the Heathbridge Miners’ Square wall has now exceeded three hundred and plan to hold a dedication service for latest batch of plaques and also those which were affixed in November. The service will be held on Tuesday 9th June at 2.00pm. Following on to the creation of Heathbridge Miners’ Square, Rosemount Garden, phase two of the Council’s regeneration plan, was recently opened by the Chair of Pyle Community Council Cllr Gina Hooper in the presence of members of the Council and children from Pyle Primary School. Further developments planned are; a joint venture with Valleys to Coast for Marlas Road, improvement schemes for Pandy Crescent and the grass verges at the Marshfield Road junction opposite the Pyle Life Centre. The Council’s regeneration scheme is based on the simple principle of; ‘There is no reason why Pyle & Kenfig Hill cannot be Wales’ Best Kept Village’, it may never happen but that does not mean the effort should not be made and the Council intends to lead the way. But it will not be able to do it without the help of all who live in the two communities. More details of its plans will be on show at the Fun Day on Saturday 20th June. Harold J Phillips Clerk to Pyle Community Council

The Inner Wheel year is coming to an end. In June President Gill and committee will hand over to the newly elected committee. The 2015 Inner Wheel Conference was held in Bournemouth. Mary Emment- Lewis was our delegate. At the May meeting Secretary Carol read Mary’s detailed and informative conference report because Mary, herself, was attending the International Inner Wheel Conference in Copenhagen. We look forward to hearing her next report. In April a successful Coffee Morning in Trinity Church raised money for our Charity Fund. This enabled us to send a donation to Nepal immediately. This year the Past Presidents and Committee Dinner was held in Rava’s, a social event enjoyed by all. Branwen Rees, a past member of our Club, has been ordained as a minister in the Methodist Church. At our meeting in May, her mother, Lois, gave an account of Branwen’s life-changing journey from working in a bank to being ordained, and then called to minister to the congregations in two churches in the Greenock area. We are filled with admiration for what she has achieved and wish her every success in her future career. Eileen Thomas Club Correspondent

Life With The Porthcawl Lions

Porthcawl Townswomens Guild News

The club has held two very successful events recently. At the end of April the open evening, held in the Y Centre where visitors came to enjoy a glass of wine and get the chance to talk to club members generated some interest and hopefully has resulted in two potential new members. The annual May Fayre was very popular, with many visitors enjoying the attractions and entertainments there. The exotic animals, particularly the snakes were a great hit with the children (if not all their mums!) and the Porthcawl Ukulele Band had more mature visitors tapping their feet and even dancing to the well remembered older hits. The money taken was the best ever for a May Fayre held in All Saints and will, of course go to help local and national charities. The next big event for Porthcawl Lions is the Vintage Fair & Classic Car Show - which will be held at Porthcawl Rugby Club grounds on Saturday 1st August. Already around 100 cars have been promised and there will, of course, be stalls, games and other attractions. A car boot sale was held on Sunday 24th May at the rugby club so keep an eye out for further car boot sales throughout the summer. Also the club hopes to hold more book sales in John Street. John Cosson jandjcosson@uwclub.net

On a day last month feeling more like summer than spring we had a very inspirational speaker – Mr Alan Badmington. His topic was ‘Lost for Words’ which he had been for many years as he had had a very bad stutter. With great humour he told us how he overcame it and now makes speeches all over the world. Our usual activities took place last month - games afternoon, craft group, luncheon group, and literary group. We had a display table at the Museum & History Society Coffee Morning on May 8th commemorating 70 years since the end of WW2. An enjoyable morning ended in a sing-song of WW2 songs. Our meeting this month is on June 10th, 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when Mr Don Llewellyn will be telling us about his ‘Life behind the Camera’. All welcome – for more information ring me on 01656 772157. Dorothy Thomas

With this in mind, the Association of Investment Companies (AIC) has taken a look at investment company performance data when the full ISA limit is invested. If you had invested a lump sum of £15,000 into the average investment company ten years ago, you would now have £38,323.50. This is £6,433.90 more than the same investment in the FTSE All-Share, which would generate £31,889.60. If you had invested £15,000 per year for the past ten years into the average investment company, you would now have £272,811. This is £17,027 higher than the £254,884 you would now have if you had invested the same in the FTSE All-Share. Sector performance: In share price total return terms, the highest performing sector over a ten-year period was Biotechnology & Healthcare. If you had invested last year’s ISA allowance of £15,000 into the average Biotechnology & Healthcare company ten years ago, you would now have an impressive £76,363.50. The same investment into the average Country Specialists company would now be worth £52,611 and into the average Global Emerging Markets company would be worth £48,982.50. Enhanced returns: Investment companies have a strong longstanding performance record and their closed-ended structure allows managers to take a long-term view. With other features such as the independent board, the ability to gear to enhance returns and their income advantages, investment companies (if appropriate to your particular situation) should be considered when it comes to making the most of your £14,240 2015/16 ISA allowance. Election Sorted – Mortgage Market Takes Off Well, with the waiting all done and the result now known, the mortgage market has stopped holding its’ breath and enquiries are up a staggering 50% already, at the time of writing. The uncertainty about the election was proving to be a period of holding one’s breath but lenders are now coming to the market with gusto, and with rates lower than ever, there are a huge number of great deals available via your independent mortgage adviser. So, whether you’re a first time buyer, a home mover or in or nearing retirement, we can assist you in getting to the right conclusion. There are new schemes for self-build and secured loans, which can run alongside your mortgage where it’s just not possible right now to amend your current mortgage arrangements. Secured loan rates have never been lower, so now is the time to take a look. Landlords, too, have a great amount of choice, so if you’re in the Buy-to-Let market or are thinking of becoming a landlord, call us and we’ll guide you through it all. For those in retirement, it can be a worrying time and a number of lenders are currently sending out letters asking what your arrangements are for repaying the capital, which you may not Seaside News | 34

have and often within the next few months. We can guide you to the lenders that specialise in your sector of the market, with numerous schemes available, up to age 85 or even later, depending on circumstances. All mortgages are now subject to affordability rules to ensure responsible lending and borrowing but with lenders all using different methods of calculation, you may fail with one or more lenders, yet succeed with others. Your independent mortgage adviser will know which lenders are likely to take you on and what their limits are – you could not possibly know this yourself and it can even put you off trying. At Cambria Financial we have almost 30 years experience and knowledge for you to tap into. Call us on 01656 782545 and discuss matters – do it NOW to book a free appointment. New Pension Rules There appears to be a general misconception with people that it makes sense to withdraw money from a Pension and invest it somewhere else. The reality is that a Pension is merely a tax effective wrapper, which in its own right can invest in much of the things that you would consider doing yourself. Allow me to put some facts around this statement. If you take £100,000 from your pension fund, then you are looking at accessing 25% tax free with the remainder being taxed at your highest marginal rate. This could mean you end up with £66,000 with £34,000 being taken in tax. An investment would therefore need to return 51% net to simply return your funds to the position it previously found itself. In many instances people think that buying a buy to let makes more sense – do you really think that the property is going to rise by 79% in a short period to recoup your loss in tax? We firmly believe that the new rules should encourage people to pay into pensions and not take out of them. Simply put, if as a higher rate taxpayer you pay £1 into an ISA it is always worth £1 and potentially liable to Inheritance Tax of 40p. If a higher rate taxpayer pays a £1 into a pension its worth £1.66 (66% return) to them and is not liable to Inheritance Tax. Pensions are themselves tax efficient investment vehicles, and it is important that people understand what they can and cannot do, you maybe surprised to learn that you can lend money from pension funds. Advice has never been more important around a topic, call us today for a no obligation consultation. Ian Davies Bartholemew Hawkins Ltd 01656 347000

Bird Watch: Blackbird

Ecogreen Garden Diary

Blackbirds are a familiar sight in our gardens and are an easy species to identify. The male is jet-black with a yellow-orange bill and yellow circles around the eyes. The colour of a male’s bill is a sign of its health - the more orange, the healthier he is. The dark brown female has a dull-yellow bill, and a slightly paler chest (with dark brown streaks) and throat. Juveniles (midspring to early autumn) may be mistaken for females as they too are brown but have a speckled appearance and dark bill. The male’s song is melodic and flutey, and sung from a high perch. Gaps are left between phrases to allow the bird to listen for any other males answering in the vicinity. A disturbed Blackbird will fly into cover whilst uttering a loud, cross chink-chink call. I’m one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Garden BirdWatch (GBW) Scheme in South Wales. This month, instead of a diary I thought I would provide some information on the benefits of installing a sedum roof. Sedum is a hardy and varied species that can tolerate freezing temperatures, or prolonged dry spells and once installed on a roof requires little maintenance. It adds an important ecosystem for birds and insect life and provides an aesthetically pleasing area, a welcome change from the usual sterile roof materials. They are an important mechanism to reduce surface run off during heavy rain and will actually improve the water quality meaning that this can be used for other purposes. Sedum and the underlying substrate will also add both thermal and noise insulation. An all round winner! If you would like to discuss an installation at your property please contact me. Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club Yippee! At last the chance of frost has passed and you can plant out summer bedding and hanging baskets, real summer stuff! Lawns should be mown at least once a week (twice if you like perfection) mow in a different direction each time, if you always cut it the same way the grass will begin to grow in that direction which makes it harder to mow. If you find earthworm casts in your lawn brush them into the grass, they are rich in nutrients! Feed your lawn with liquid fertilizer, its easy and well worthwhile. Lift and divide bluebells once leaves have yellowed (lots more next year)! Veggie wise – plant out runner beans, courgettes and pumpkins. Also earth up your spuds. Did you know – bamboo only flower after 65 years and that all plants flower at exactly the same time wherever in the world they are (clever stick!) There’s a session on taking and rooting cuttings Saturday 6th June at 10am in the Green Hall, (you can take what you make!) Our Open Gardens Day is Sunday 21st June, do come. There’s lovely gardens to visit and lots going on in the Hall. Knee –device for finding rocks in your garden Chris Early

Laleston Gardening Club Our annual plant sale held on Saturday May 9th was outstanding, with quality plants that had been nurtured by members in various greenhouses. The Club is grateful to everyone for the support given so freely, all the volunteers and contributors. Money raised will go towards the new roof and necessary repairs to the storage area. Now members have their greenhouses back, they will have lots of jobs waiting. Plant out annual summer bedding plants now the risk of frost has passed. Your containers, hanging baskets and planters can be planted up. Pinch out the tips of Fuchsias to encourage bushy growth and more flowers. If you have hardy Geraniums, cut them back towards the end of June when they have finished flowering it will encourage new growth and more flowers. In the vegetable garden: earth up potato plants as they grow. Salad crops should be ready to harvest, also early potatoes. Midsummer Day, June 21st ‘the longest day’ will bring extra light and warmth, just the type of atmosphere that weeds love, also keep a look-out for nasty insects such as aphids on the underside of leaves and the wine weevils. Deputyship

When someone close to you (eg a family member or friend) loses the capacity to care for and make decisions for themselves, and there is no lasting power of attorney, it is possible to apply for a Deputyship so that you can make decisions on behalf of that person. Becoming a Deputy A Deputy will be appointed by the Court of Protection to be legally responsible for someone who lacks capacity to make decisions for themselves. The lack of capacity may be because of any impairment of or disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain, such as dementia or a stroke. A Deputy must be over 18 and is often a family member or friend. The proposed deputy completes a set of application forms and the patient’s doctor completes a medical report. An application fee is payable. The deputies powers may relate, for example, to the person’s finances, property or accommodation, their medical treatment, their personal welfare their general care and wellbeing. Deputies’ duties Deputies must comply with the order appointing them. They must also comply with five statutory principles in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Practice. Every adult has the right to make decisions, and must be assumed to have capacity unless it is proven otherwise. Anything done for or on behalf of a person who lacks capacity must be in their ‘best interests’ and least restrictive of their basic rights and freedoms. Restrictions on Deputies There are certain things a Deputy cannot do, including: Make a will or create a trust for the person lacking capacity. Exercise that person’s powers as trustee. Make a decision that contradicts a decision made by an attorney who was acting under a lasting power of attorney. Refuse consent to any medical treatment to keep the person alive. If the Deputy is in doubt whether they have power to make a particular decision they can apply to the Court for guidance. Ending a Deputyship A deputyship ends automatically if, the person lacking capacity recovers or dies. The order expires. If the person becomes able to make their own decisions, the order stays in force until it expires or is discharged by another Court order. A Deputy who cannot, or does not want to, remain a deputy must apply to the Court to have their order discharged. The Court can also discharge a deputy who it believes has acted improperly, eg not in the person’s best interests. This is a complicated area of law and we would always recommend you seek legal advice.

Know Your Blood Pressure Day Saturday 18th April was ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Day’ and Porthcawl Rotarians invited residents and visitors to have their blood pressure measured. 173 people called into Trinity Church to avail themselves of this free test. Of this number 41 were advised to see their GP and 5 were urgent referrals. Hopefully the Rotary Club of Porthcawl, in conjunction with the Stroke Association, has helped raise awareness of how important it is for people to have their blood pressure checked. High blood pressure is a key risk factor for stroke, which can strike at any age, and is one of the top three causes of death and the single largest cause of disability. The Rotarians are extremely grateful to all the volunteers who worked throughout the day, especially the health care professionals who gave their time so freely. Diabetes & Cognitive Issues (NaturalNews) Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have discovered that middle-aged people who did not properly manage their blood sugar levels were almost 20 percent more likely to have cognitive issues later in their life than middle-aged people with normal blood sugar levels. The study, titled “Diabetes in Midlife and Cognitive Change Over 20 Years: A Cohort Study,” spanned 25 years, assessing data that examined the blood sugar levels as well as the cognitive, memory and reasoning abilities of over 13,000 Caucasian and African-American adults aged 48 - 67. All were initially screened for pre-diabetes and diabetes symptoms and were examined during the course of the decadeslong study. The results found that those who had elevated blood sugar levels in mid-life were more prone to cognitive problems in their later years. For example, the researchers discovered that people in their 50s who had high blood sugar levels were more likely to experience mental decline approximately 20 years later, when they were in their 70’s. Become a volunteer for Heart Research UK and help make your community live healthier, happier, longer lives. Heart Research UK is seeking out the help of local volunteers to help them beat the country’s biggest killer, heart disease. Any time you can give takes them one step closer to winning the battle and with one person dying in the UK every seven minutes; it’s a battle well worth fighting. Riley has gone through several major operations that would not have been available without the technology developed and paid for by charities like Heart Research UK. It’s a special programme of five exercises based on Sun Style Tai Chi devised in Porthcawl at the Swimming Dragon School. After I attended two courses in England costing £400 each time, to gain and maintain Dr Paul Lam’s teachers license for his ‘Tai Chi for Arthritis’ therapy programme, he required attending his courses every two years for updating or my license would be revoked. I realised not many in Wales would maintain a two year license having that expense, so as the leading Sun Style expert in Wales I devised my own Sun Style Tai Chi therapy for arthritis, with the help of a senior physiotherapist in Morriston Hospital, who also used the therapy for her Parkinson’s patients. She updated my original programme and I took out a copyright, for using modified Sun Style movements in novel copyright small cycles for easy learning and teaching. For updating I simply require licence holders to remain in contact by becoming mandatory members of the Sun Style Tai Chi Association of Wales. Any one teaching it and not maintaining membership are not receiving and implementing updates, have any past licenses revoked, and will be breaking copyright law. POEMS We All Have Golden Memories

We all have golden memories, Of someone we love, Who sadly are no longer here, As they were recalled to heaven up above. We like to think of the nice times, For the memories to stay, They are often family trips, Or holidays you had away. We all need golden memories, To keep our loved ones memories to carry on, And we can talk to others openly about them, Instead of being sad because they have gone.

Guardians Of The Flock

Ignorance Of Innocence

As new born lambs, our little ones are given, Guileless and glad, exploring each new freedom With joy and strength of voice and limb and will Lord, help us to guard them well As David watched his flock, in days of old Aware of foes that lurked around the fold Fearless he rose to smite both lion and bear Lord, may we show such care To guard the ones you’ve given us to keep Safe and secure, as David did his sheep May we, as fearless, stand against the foe That each child your peace may know Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

We often need to visualise, A special time or special place, This generally makes you happier, And puts a smile back on your face. David Boyce, Brackla , Bridgend

Tactics (Or how to get a goldfish!) I think I’ll get a horse! A fine and noble steed, I’ll buy a saddle, a posh hard hat, Plus all the tack he’ll need. He looked at me aghast! That’s not feasible he said. I smiled, OK, if you feel that way, I’ll get a dog instead! I fancy a Saint Bernard dog, With big jowls all slobby wet, We’ll walk him, and if things go wrong I’ll call the supervet! He looked quite pale and shaky, That’s impractical he said, I smiled, OK, if you feel that way, I’ll get a cat instead! A nice expensive Persian cat With long, soft and silky hair, She’ll molt a lot, so every day. We must hoover everywhere! He began to look quite angry, That’s ridiculous he said, I smiled, Ok, if you feel that way, I’ll have some fish instead! I don’t want the tropical kind, Just some goldfish, nothing swank, A filter, pump, some pretty stones, In a small to medium tank. He answered as he smiled at me Now’s that’s a great idea I’d say! You’re so reasonable; I’ll help you choose, As a treat I’ll even pay! SORTED! Chris Early, Cefn Cribwr Seaside News | 42

We Need This Lovely Rain Water

The heavens start to open up, We are just waiting for the rain, Then we hear the usual sounds, Of the pitter patter on the window pane.

Birds in the sky Flying free. Not a care. Not a danger. Not a clue of the violence below. Through the clouds they soar, Like a surfer on a wave of Independence. Where do they journey? No-one knows. Maybe not even them…. Swirling Spiraling Sweeping through the sky Of spectacular blue. Trapped under hoards of discrimination And racism, so many few Realise its simplicity and beauty. To look up is an action so rare. A breath of fresh air. Too much time is spent looking down; To make others frown By passing hurtful and Judgmental comments. Why isolate someone timid? To push them to their limit; So much so they take a worthless life into Their exasperated hands, And regret their final minute Of innocence. It takes a lifetime to build a wall Of confidence and strength, But – A moment of a monster’s arrogance, And stupidity, To destroy it. Holly Walker, Bridgend

The raindrops start to gather, To form a much large pool, Ready for the children to jump into, Whilst walking into school. The rain falls in many forms, Sometimes fine and also very heavy drops, But no matter how it falls to earth, We are much happier when it stops.

Deadline date for the July issue is: Monday 15th June

Rain can make you feel miserable, And very sad indeed, But water in its natural form, Is something we all really need. So no matter how it makes us feel, Or what we all think, We need this lovely rain water, To wash things and to drink David Boyce, Brackla, Bridgend

Quintin Jardine Last Resort

If you enjoyed Kate Atkinson’s dazzling Life After Life, which explored the possibility of infinite chances, as Ursula Todd lived through the turbulent events of the last century again and again and again. Then you have to read A God in Ruins, in which Atkinson turns her focus on Ursula’s beloved younger brother Teddy – wouldbe poet, RAF bomber pilot, husband and father – as he navigates the perils and progress of the 20th century. For all Teddy endures in battle, his greatest challenge will be to face living in a future he never expected to have. All these books and many more are available free of charge from your local Library. There are also books in Large Print, on CD and available to download if you have a PIN number. If you would like to explore some of our electronic resources (e.books, audio books, family history) do ask and we can arrange some training for you. We are also holding an Open University Advice Desk on the 19th June 9.30-1pm to explore possible options with the OU. Hope to see you soon

Arts Porthcawl Male Choir

Months of dedicated rehearsal culminated with the choir travelling to London to take part in the Welsh Association of Male Choirs’ concert in the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. This event occurs every four years and attracts WAMC choirs, from Wales, England and abroad. They include the Snowdon choir from Kent and the Oxford Welsh choir, both of which have visited Porthcawl Male Choir, whilst the Australian Welsh Male Choir and Cor Meibion Cymru De Affrig from South Africa, attended from overseas. Soprano Charlotte Vaughan, who is from Porthcawl, was one of the guest artistes. Charlotte is a recipient of Porthcawl Male Choirs ‘Dilwyn Evans’ scholarship and WAMC’s Geraint Morris Music Award. At each performance of the Festival of Massed Male Voice Choirs, long serving choristers of the participating choirs are recognised. Porthcawl Male Choir’s second bass Ray Dixon, a founder member of the choir was accorded such recognition as well the applause of both audience and choristers. Porthcawl Male Choir rehearses on Tuesdays and Fridays in Arlington Road Presbyterians Church from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, why not come along and just listen? If you like what you hear you might like to join us, we won’t pressure you. John Williams

Porthcawl Choral Society Following our last concert before Easter, Angharad Edwards very kindly volunteered to take over as Musical Director. She is a professional harpist and pianist and has played the harp with our choir on several occasions. Our summer concert this year will be music from shows and film, and, in keeping with a summer occasion, we are planning to serve strawberries and cream in the interval. I am sure the choice of music will appeal to many of you so please come along and enjoy. Friday 26th June at All Saints Church Porthcawl at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 (includes strawberries) from choir members at the door or contact 01656 784211. Pat Parry

A Film Maker’s Point Of View Downwood Film Productions thought it had finished making local history films, having covered several of the towns in this part of South Wales within easy reach of its Porthcawl base, but an opportunity has arisen this year to extend the titles by adding Penarth to the list of places included in the series. Filming will take place through the late spring and early summer and, as usual with this kind of production, the challenge is to reveal the essential elements of the town’s history in a way that can be shown visually, so that the viewer is taken on a tour in both the past and the present. Penarth has certain similarities to Porthcawl, inasmuch as it came into being with the building of the dock in the middle of the nineteenth century although it grew more rapidly and to a greater size, with wealthy shipping families from Cardiff moving there and building large mansions for themselves in a way that never happened in Porthcawl; and then, after the decline in the exporting of coal, the town became a resort, but not in the same way as here. Oh, and Penarth still has a railway! Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Tel: 01656 771775 or 07510 934299 Picture: Anthony Hontoir courtesy of JTP Photography

Art in Focus This month the focus is on: Chalkie Davies: The NME Years, currently on show at The National Museum in Cardiff till 6th September. If ‘Rock n Roll’ is your thing this is the one to see. You can revel in the world-class photography of Welsh-born Chalkie Davies. On show are some of the most highly influential and important artists from that era (1973-1980s) including Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Debbie Harry, Paul McCartney, The Clash, The Rolling Stones and so on. The exhibition is unique and celebrates Davies’ pioneering ideas on how to photograph these rock icons. Previously, photographers only had access to their subjects via interviews, so the images were rather static. Davies got to know his subjects and got them to pose in ways that somehow encapsulated their personality. After a conversation with Elvis Costello, Chalkie Davies, in addition to his NME duties, took personal and private photographs of these rock stars without ever showing them. He hid them away in a box waiting for a museum to ask him to put on an exhibition of his works. We are that museum and this is that work. In partnership with NME. Arts Bridgend Male Choir News Roundup

The Choir’s first engagement in June is on Sunday 7th at 1.00pm when it sings in the Marquee at Ogmore Village at the conclusion of ‘Mair’s Walk’. Athlete Jamie Baulch will be leading the Walk this year, and sponsorship, as usual, is supporting Cancer research at Velindre Hospital. Choristers next come together at All Saints Church, Pen-y-fai on the 12th supporting a proud chorister grand-dad, Brian Evans at his grand-daughter’s wedding service. Next up is St. Asaph Cathedral on Saturday 20th, when BMC will share a concert with the Trelawnyd Male Choir from the locality. This is in support of St Kentigern’s Hospice. Trelawnyd MVC enjoyed a great welcome at Bridgend last year and choristers are relishing their second visit to the UK’s smallest Cathedral. Finally, choristers have accepted an invite to WRU Championship Club, Bridgend Athletic for an informal sing-along on Thursday25th - for three good reasons. It is the location for a weekly post practice beer or two, where a welcome is always enjoyed; secondly, the Club’s very successful Junior Section is celebrating its 25th Birthday and finally, to help celebrate, the Club have attracted International Rugby Referee, Nigel Owens to do some coaching with the Junior’s and participate in a Q & A session. Apparently he’s looking forward to joining in the singing! David T Burt Media Officer

Stag’s World of Rock As always, there’s plenty going on music-wise this time of the year. Exclusive news for the column is that Protafield, the group fronted by Kenfig Hill’s multi-talented Jayce Lewis, has announced its new guitarist as Nicki Crandle, the former Jeff Killed John/Bullet for my Valentine founder member! Bullet has become one of heavy rock’s biggest names and I’m glad to see Nicki back, he’s a good mate and top musician too. Protafield kick off their World Tour with a warm-up gig in London, then spend seven nights in India playing to 20,000 fans on some nights as Jayce has an almost cult status out there! More on the lads next month. The Newton Pop and Rock Beer Festival is on August 29th – I’ll give more information in July, but two good groups already on the bill are Last Chance Heroes and No Vacancy, a young punk group about whom I’ve heard good reports and feature Arron on guitar, Charlie on bass, Brad on drums and Lili on vocals. I’ll check them out soon. The Planet Rock Stock Festival is returning to Trecco Bay in early December with tickets on sale on their website. No bands have been announced yet, but I’ll keep you posted. Stag Marks Tel/text: 07549 728356 Picture: Nicki ‘Trash’ Crandle

Sport Porthcawl RFC U7s Well, a very good first season of rugby. The first year is always the hardest, learning the rules and developing brand new skills. As a coach it has been super pleasing to see such a massive improvement from the first training session attended. Throughout the season we had very large numbers, making it tricky to ensure equal game time, but the numbers did not dwindle - the players and parents have been very committed. The stats showed 15 wins, 2 Draws and 12 Losses. Great result considering every week was a different combination of players! The majority of players go up to under 8’s with new coaches and I wish them all the best, if they show the effort they did throughout this season, they will go far. With regards to the younger boys staying at under 7’s there is a core of really good players, which I’m sure will carry on the good work of this year. A big thank you to Louise Evans (Team Manager), Stuart Sealey and Ian Davies (assistant coaches), as well as Gareth Davies for your help throughout the year, it would have been impossible without you guys. Thanks to all for your support and enjoy a well-deserved break. Geraint Evans

Porthcawl Lifeguard News By the time you read this hopefully the sea will have warmed up enough for our nippers to venture in. They’ll definitely need to get some training in with the first nipper carnival of the season fast approaching on the 7th June at Caswell Bay in the Mumbles. Our juniors on the other hand have been training in the sea since Easter despite the headache inducing cold. They have also been spending one night a week for the past month at the club training for the theory part of their junior lifesaver and beach lifeguard awards coming in July. Many of our older juniors will also be studying for their GCSE exams at the same time and we applaud their commitment to achieving these goals. The club has a very busy summer ahead. We will be holding a youth carnival at Coney Beach on the 11th July, which will be good preparation for our juniors, as we will also be hosting the Welsh Championships in September. Talking of major events our annual Round the Bay Swim will be taking place on 23rd August. If you would like further info on the swim and other forthcoming events please visit our website at porthcawlifeguards.co.uk Andrew Barnes

Tap It Out CC April was classics month in the cycling world and the club has been heavily involved in both Paris Roubaix and Liege Bastogne Liege. On 11th April Jase Jones, Graham Dighton, Claire Lawrence and David Williams gave their bodies the chance to shake, rattle and roll along the famous Paris Roubaix cobbled route on the day before the pros. The full length 170km route features 28 sections of pavé, Then on 25th April Sharon Jones, Nicky Morgan, Ian Barham, Rob Jones and Jase Jones all took part in Liège– Bastogne–Liège, often called La Doyenne (the oldest), of the five Monuments of the European professional road cycling calendar. The event involves a 279km ride with 15,000feet of climbing Seaside News | 54

Plans are already in motion for next year’s trip so watch this space. All new members welcome so any questions please contact me on nickemorgan@hotmail.co.uk. Stay safe and KEEP ON TAPPING. Porthcawl Cricket Club - Junior Section News The cricket season has now started and we hope that the sun will shine as much as it did last summer. Junior Club Sessions have started up at Locks Lane on Friday evenings 6.00pm till 7.30pm. We are running an U9’s / U11’s and U12’s team this year and all new players (boys and girls) are welcome to come along and learn to play a fun summer sport. Our U12’s started with a win against Bridgend CC by 8 runs, well done all. Porthcawl CC are also supporting a local inter-school competition, now in it’s second year. Last year’s winners were West Park Primary. Schools play every Friday afternoon in the summer term, and the top two teams will play a final at Porthcawl Cricket Club in mid July. The club are working closely with Cricket Wales to provide expert coaching in the local schools this summer, so many pupils will get their first experience of cricket and we hope that they all enjoy. If you are interested joining us please contact John Edwards on 01656 771631 or Peter Downes 01656 785505 for more details. Mark Dixon
