SALT LAKE CAR PARK - UNACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF LITTER Dear Editor, It’s a pity that BCBC’s eagerness to plan and install parking meters and signage on Salt Lake car park appears to have occurred without any consideration for rubbish management. There is not a single bin on the site, little wonder then it looks like the photo below after a busy weekend. Could I suggest that as a spend to save measure, some of the parking revenue generated is used by BCBC to purchase and fit some bins. The public does tend to use bins when they are provided, but not providing any demonstrates a short sighted view from the planners. G Hill, Porthcawl
PORTHCAWL LITTLE THEATRE Dear Editor, It was interesting to read Ceri Joseph’s article on the history of Porthcawl Little Theatre, in the May 2019 issue of the Seaside News. Founded in 1948, sadly it “ceased to be active” in 1998 when its numbers dwindled. If any of your theatre-loving readers are interested in helping to revive the group, please could they contact me at: porthcawlittletheatre@hotmail.com Jan Davies, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL COUNCIL TAX Dear Editor, In the Seaside News - Issue 227, December 2018, the deputy leader of the BCBC councillor Hywel Williams wrote The Grass Is Not Always Greener. Having re-read this article, there are several points I wish to question. Firstly, that the council put £3m towards the coastal sea defences. I have read in other publications that the Welsh Government put £2.2m towards it and the council paid the remainder. With regards to the £3.2m marina project ,I have read that the BCBC are just leasing the land at Cosy Corner to others. The Watersports Center at Rest Bay may bring in parking fees to the BCBC but will this money help the town? The comment on a swimming pool is not helpful for those parents who live by the sea and feel afraid of letting their children out and about unless they are competent swimmers. So yes I feel we that we do not get value for money for our HIGH council tax. I would like to know where all our property taxes go? Maybe the councillor should walk in the town after it has been raining and see the huge puddles at the junctions of Lias Road and Mary Street and Old School Road. And also the disgraceful pavement outside the front and rear of the CoOperative shop. John Finney, Porthcawl

ALGAE ON THE NEW STEPS, PORTHCAWL OUTGOING MAYOR PRESENTS PLAQUES Dear Editor, There has been much speculation regarding the spread of algae over the new steps on the sea front. Unfortunately you cannot beat nature as the algae will continually build up, covering the steps with the incoming tides. The green algae is unsightly, extremely slippery, and dangerous to walk on. Children will not be aware of the danger and, being children, will run up and down the slippery steps, sadly resulting in accidents and possible serious injury. One allotment owner stated that algae are a rich fertiliser for the garden. If this is so perhaps the committees of the five allotments in Porthcawl, together with their members, may decide to collect this algae on a regular basis. This would have a dual benefit - they would have free fertiliser, and the steps would be kept clear for the public. It would be nice if this solution materialised. Regarding the steps, it would be necessary for BCBC to place a notice warning the public of the danger, especially as tourists may be unaware of how slippery they are when covered with algae. At the same time another notice could be placed banning cyclists and skate boarders from the new surface on the beach. It was incredible to see the crowds gathering along the railings to watch the workmen carrying out the improvements to the beach. They could not have failed to be impressed with both the workers in their yellow and orange outfits and their variety of machinery, which included lorries, cranes and steam rollers. Onlookers were amazed to see the cranes picking up huge rocks and transferring them from one spot to another as if they were small marbles. The public has maintained their interest over the past year from the laying of the first step followed by the repairing and reinforcing of the sea wall, and finally the covering of the black tarmac with a sand coloured compound. The end result is we have a beautiful and attractive beach, which will encourage locals and visitors to partake in its pleasure. You never know, we might have hired deck chairs adorning the seafront and beach as we have done in the past. All of this transformation has been brought about by the hard work and dedication of Griffiths Contractors. He and his men are to be congratulated and thanked for doing such a superb job. Porthcawl can now be proud of the beach and will be able to enjoy it for many years to come. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, As Mayor of Porthcawl for 2018/19 I wanted to recognise those residents and organisations for the work they do and who have made a contribution to enhancing the lives of residents who live in Porthcawl. It is within the gift of the Mayor to present four town plaques. So, I presented Porthcawl Town plaques to John Rees, Angela Tozer & Sara Watkins from Bridgend County Borough Council cleaner streets department who worked on the project Porthcawl Love it! Don’t Trash it! John & his team spent a great deal of their time with our five primary schools and also businesses within Porthcawl helping to improve our environment by raising awareness on reducing litter and plastics. The Drs & staff at our New Health Centre who have persevered over many, many years to get health facilities for our residents that is fit for the twenty first century. Mary & Keith Duggan who have over many, many years been involved with the Porthcawl Stroke Club. I believe they deserve recognition of the work that they have given to this Town working with our residents that have had debilitating life changing strokes. My fourth plaque I presented again to volunteers within the community of Porthcawl & that was to Roger Slennett & his colleagues who are the Porthcawl First Responders. Roger & colleagues have worked tirelessly this year to buy and position a number of defibrillators within the community of Porthcawl and to raise awareness. Norah Clarke Mayor of Porthcawl 2018/19

BOOK OF THE MONTH ‘Cruel Acts’ by Jane Casey From award-winning author Jane Casey comes a powerful Maeve Kerrigan crime thriller which will keep you on the edge of your seat! How can you spot a murderer? Leo Stone is a ruthless killer or the victim of a miscarriage of justice. A year ago, he was convicted for the murder of two women and sentenced to life in prison. But now he’s free, and according to him, he’s innocent. DS Maeve Kerrigan and DI Josh Derwent are determined to put Stone back behind bars where he belongs, but the more Maeve finds out, the less convinced she is of his guilt. Then another woman disappears in similar circumstances. Is there a copycat killer, or have they been wrong about Stone from the start?

Local history PORTHCAWL MUSEUM RE OPENED ITS DOORS
FROM ‘THE LAMB’ TO THE SLAUGHTER?
Porthcawl museum re opened its doors on Good Friday after a 4 month refurbishment by its band of volunteers To mark the occasion the Mayor of Porthcawl Cllr Norah Clarke and the Mayor of BCBC Cllr John McCarthy jointly performed the formal opening. Paul Joseph Chairman of Porthcawl Museum thanked all of those members of the museum and Porthcawl Town Council who helped with the work as well as local contractors, including Protheroe Electrics, Bubble Construction, Mike Davies Decorator and Griffiths Construction. He also commented “It is with immense pride that I thank my colleagues and the committed and dedicated volunteers who have worked their magic creating what you will see today”. In response Cllr Clarke said the museum now stood as a shining example of what can be achieved by an enthusiastic group of people working together to create a major attraction and asset for the town. David Swidenbank Picture caption: Mayor of Porthcawl Cllr Norah Clarke and the Mayor of BCBC Cllr John McCarthy cutting the ribbon and the thank you cake.
Roy Howell, the eldest of five, was born in 1914 in ‘The Lamb Inn,’ South Cornelly. At the time his parents, William and Catherine, owned both ‘The Lamb’ and ‘The Three Horseshoes’, sited further up the hill; originally, a staging post to serve the tram drivers of the Duffryn Llynfi Porthcawl Railway. On leaving school, Roy initially went to work as an apprentice butcher at the slaughterhouse in Newton, before moving onto Smithfield Market in London where he qualified as a ‘Master Butcher.’ It was in London that he met Babs Evans and they were married at Maudlam in 1939. That same year Roy was called up into the Royal Army Service Corps and Babs returned to live with her Aunty Nellie and Uncle Fred in Newton, where Kay and her sister, Anita were born. Meanwhile, Roy, a ‘Master Butcher,’ was serving in Africa as part of the mobile unit that fed the British and Commonwealth troops stationed throughout the Islands; in particular Madagascar. Sadly, Roy had told of how more soldiers died there of malaria than in battle. Following demobilisation in 1946, the family moved back to South Cornelly, where Roy and Babs became landlords of ‘The Three Horseshoes.’ Ceri Joseph

School reports HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR TALK AT BRYNTEG SCHOOL
to allocate time for play during school hours. Children’s free time for play and opportunities for outdoor play are steadily decreasing. So, school playtime is vital to children for their fun and relaxation as well as for their health and well-being. It is part of their ‘work/life balance’. Play Wales urges governing bodies and school leaders to consider the value to pupil well-being when making decisions on the planning and length of the school day including playtimes, lunch times and homework scheduling. – Marianne Mannello, Assistant Director, Play Wales. Andrea Habberley
CYNFFIG NEWS
On 3rd May Brynteg Comprehensive School were privileged to host Holocaust survivor Eva Clarke. Mrs Clarke spoke to year nine pupils who had been studying the Holocaust as part of their Religious Studies GCSE course. All pupils were enthralled by her story of survival after being born in a concentration camp. Eva travels extensively telling the remarkable story of her parents being taken into Auschwitz where her father was killed. Her mother survived and gave birth to Eva on the death marches just as the camps were being liberated. The event was attended by the mayor of Bridgend and MP Madeleine Moon who spoke to the audience after the talk reiterating how important it is that we all fight against hatred. Religious Studies teacher Lynsey Morris said “It is vital that we continue to remember and teach about the events of the Holocaust so that future generations are aware of what prejudice can lead to and to work to put an end to discrimination in all forms”. SAVE OUR PLAYTIME
A group of Nottage Primary School children are trying to save their playtime from proposed cuts. Play Wales - a national charity for children’s play have released a statement in support of the children: It is widely accepted that playing is vital for a healthy and happy childhood. Playtimes and break times at school are seen as very important by both children and their parents. Many children say that school is the main chance they have to play with their friends and most parents believe that it is important 24 | seaside news
Cynffig’s Year 12 Engineering Education Scheme team consisting of, Leah Evans, Emily Davies, Britney Griffiths, Jacob Heskith, Ryan Legg, Charlotte Roberts and Lowri Thomas have almost reached the end of their six month partnership working with Zimmer Biomet in Bridgend which has proved so rewarding. The Year 12 pupils were invited to present their technical solution in a ‘Dragons Den’ style formal presentation and question and answer session to six senior development engineers and directors from Zimmer Biomet. They needed to convince the panel of the technical and financial merits of their chosen solution however it was not only their technical solution and final report that impressed, but also their confidence and professional composure throughout. Our young engineers’ solution will help save the company a huge £50,000 a year! Supported by Mr Morrish and Mr Berry the Cynffig team went on to win “Best Application of Engineering and Technology” award in the South Wales finals at MOD St Athan. They are now one of the finalists, (5 out of 66 South Wales’ teams) for the UK National Big Bang Science and Technology Fair 2020. We are extremely proud of their achievements and wish them luck for the Birmingham NEC in March. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY NEWS
We love the summer term and always ensure learning is as fun and exciting as possible. Our Foundation Phase children had a great day out at Noah’s Ark in Bristol as part of their topic on Creatures and particularly loved the lions, hippos and peacocks. During their recent COOL (Choosing Our Own Learning) Day the children dressed as movie stars and participated in theatrical activities to help inspire ideas for their new Stage and Screen topic. Dressed as miners, our KS2 children had great fun with science, technology, art and drama as they developed ideas for this terms mining topic. Trips to Big Pit and the South Wales Mining Museum in Neath have really brought the topic to life. We have recently worked with Keep Wales Tidy and other local schools on the ‘Porthcawl – Love It Don’t Trash It Campaign’. The children are proud of their town and want to keep it looking its best; they were extremely pleased to win Porthcawl’s litter prevention poster competition. Our wonderful part time Nursery children have settled well having benefitted from weekly family play sessions and home visits. We still have a few Nursery places left for September so, if you are still considering your child’s Nursery place, please ring to arrange a visit. NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL This term Nursery and Reception will be investigating signs of summer. How better to start off the topic than with a walk to the duck pond. Whilst there we observed the changing scenery, looked for minibeasts and appreciated the warm sun shining down on us to state just a few. We have many more exciting plans over the next few weeks involving a picnic and ice cream at the beach and a ‘camping’ morning on our field with tents and a barbecue. First we need to learn some campfire songs! It looks like it is going to be another fun-filled topic with plenty of learning opportunities. The school has recently received funding to run a coding club which has provided an excellent opportunity for key stage 2 pupils to develop their digital competency and in particular, their computational thinking. Pupils use programmes such as scratch to control microbits and Kitronik Inventor’s kits. The after school code club is attended by many of our digital leaders who are pupils who have a particular interest in developing their own digital competence and the skills of their peers. We at Newton Primary are extremely lucky to be situated so close to the beach and we therefore seek every opportunity to utilise this beautiful natural resource. Staff and pupils have organised a Beachathon during the Summer term, which will provide enviable opportunities for our learners to develop their health and well-being, which is of paramount importance to us all at Newton Primary. School reports ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL
PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
Congratulations to our Sixth Form Football Team winning the Bridgend Schools’ Cup at an exciting final held at Penybont Football ground in Bryntirion in May. Well done to all those who took part! It has been a very busy academic year for charitable causes. We have recently received confirmation that our Advent Foodbank appeal fed 150 families over Christmas. During this time we also raised £500 for Aid to the Church in Need alongside a lot of awareness raising. Before Lent we collected 50 large bags of donations of warm clothing, blankets and tents to Emmaus for the homeless in South Wales during the cold winter weather. On Down Syndrome Awareness Day we wore odd socks and took voluntary donations amounting to nearly £100. Our Lenten almsgiving resulted in over £900 to CAFOD for those who go hungry and suffer in third world countries. The generosity of staff, pupils and parents is both humbling and overwhelming. I have been very impressed with the large numbers of students remaining behind after school and during the holidays, to prepare for their examinations. I am very grateful to the staff for their dedication and I am sure that the pupils and staff will be rewarded for their efforts. My thoughts and prayers are with all students taking examinations this summer. Angela Keller Head Teacher
DESIGNING THE NEW CURRICULUM
This is an exciting time for education in Wales and Pil Primary School is currently preparing for the changes to the curriculum and approach to teaching and learning. The curriculum is changing to help our young people become more adaptable and motivated to learn new skills as life and the world changes around them. The Four Core Purposes will be at the heart of the new curriculum: Ambitious, capable learners; Enterprising, creative contributors; Ethically, informed citizens; Healthy, confident individuals. Literacy, numeracy and digital competence will continue to play a vital role in learning and life. The New Curriculum will encourage creative and connected learning based on six areas of learning and experience: Language, Literacy and communication; Mathematics and numeracy; Science and technology; Expressive Arts; Humanities; Health and Well-Being. Over the coming months, we will seek to gain the views of the children, parents and carers to involve the whole community in the changes ahead. A Casey-Haimes Deputy Head Teacher 28 | seaside news
At this time of year many pupils are reaching the culmination of their studies, and all across the school are facing examinations, whether internal or external. Thank you to all the teachers who have again worked tirelessly to support our students and to the pupils themselves who have shown great dedication and commitment to their studies – all that remains is for me to wish them all luck! I have enjoyed looking at some of the exceptional DT, Art and Textiles pieces as pupils put the finishing touches to coursework and their efforts are displayed for moderation. The standard of work has been absolutely outstanding this year. The second half of term promises to be another busy one with several transition events planned. Once again our Year 10 Welsh Baccalaureate students will be completing their ‘Neighbourhood Enhancement’ element of the ‘Community Challenge’, (10 hours over 2 days), which has seen them making improvements to Cosy Corner, Lock’s Lane and the wells in Nottage in recent years. At the time of writing, projects have not been finalised and we are happy to consider any ideas for suitable schemes from local residents: please contact Mr Thomas on 01656 774100. Local news PLANS SCRAPPED TO CLOSE LOCAL FIRE STATIONS I welcome the decision of the South Wales Fire Authority to scrap plans to close the fire stations in Porthcawl and Kenfig Hill and build a new one at Cornelly instead. They have been unable to find a suitable site, which could be a blessing. I opposed the plan because of fears that fire crews based in Cornelly would be unable to reach Porthcawl to deal with fire as quickly as they can now. Minutes are precious in the fight against fire and delays spell the difference between life and death. Porthcawl is home to the massive caravan site at Trecco and, while any sort of fire is terrifying, one in a caravan becomes lethal in just a few minutes. I was also unhappy that closing the station in Kenfig Hill would cause unacceptable delays in crews reaching fires at the far end of Cefn Cribwr. This area could have been served in the past by the fire station in Aberkenfig but this was closed years ago so is no longer an option. The role of fire officers may have changed as fires are now less frequent but every fire threatens life or property and must have the speediest response. A WORLD WITHOUT BIRDSONG Radio listeners were last month treated to an unusually tranquil experience when ‘Let Nature Sing’, which is made up entirely of birdsong, reached the top 20 in the UK singles chart. The RSPB released the track to pose a haunting question- what if the singing stopped? You may have seen the photo of a gannet trapped in a net on Grassholm Island, Pembrokeshire, published by the World Wildlife Fund alongside a UN report on the global collapse of animal and plant life. The WWF identified Wales as, “one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.” The UK has 40 million fewer birds than there were 40 years ago. A frightening statistic that should make us take stock of the degradation suffered by the natural world around us. At the end of 2019 wildlife-rich habitats, such as our own Kenfig Nature Reserve with it rich variety of birds, plants and insects leaves local government management and no one knows who the Kenfig Corporation Trustees will choose to manage to secure its future. Locally we are fortunate in having a number of rich and diverse habitats so we have a local, national and international responsibility to protect and secure them for future generations if we are to begin to reverse the environmental and ecological decline. PORTHCAWL REGENERATION PLANS Sustainable Wales joined the Climate Emergency Campaigns with a constructive challenge to Bridgend Borough Council. “Will ‘Salt Lake’ be a Low-Carbon Community?” Link: www.sustainablewales.org.uk/blog/ porthcawlregen19 The charity’s response was submitted at exactly the same time that voices, from octogenarian Sir David Attenborough to teenager Greta Thunberg, are being raised to describe our climate emergency, whilst student strikes and Extinction Rebellion demonstrations are occurring internationally. “Our challenge seems ambitious, says Margaret Minhinnick, SW Director, “but reflect the bare minimum of what should be achieved by any regeneration of Porthcawl.” “Porthcawl can showcase the way ahead. The resort’s regeneration provides it with perhaps the most exciting moment in its history.” SW volunteer, Kristian Evans, a father of two young boys, says: “The ‘climate emergency’ is happening now. Our children will bear the consequences of our choices and we cannot ignore the scale of the challenges they are facing. Kicking the can down the road is not an option.” “We urge BCBC to seize this opportunity to make our resort relevant”, Margaret and Kris say. “A ‘bog standard’ regeneration is not what the town requires or deserves. Ongoing consultation with the community is vital.” The document, ‘Porthcawl: a low carbon future?’ is now available on-line, whilst copies have been sent to relevant councilors and community action groups, such as Porthcawl Civic Trust, the resort’s Chamber of Trade, and BAVO.
NEW MAYOR FOR PORTHCAWL It was all change at last week’s annual general meeting of Porthcawl Town Council when a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor were elected to serve for 2019/2020. Elected to serve as Mayor for the next 12 months is Cllr Graham Walter, who has represented the Newton ward as an Independent since 2011. Cllr Walter lives in Newton and took semi-retirement 18 months ago. He said on the night “It is an enormous privilege, to represent the people of Porthcawl, and I am really looking forward to supporting the many wonderful local organisations that work so hard for our town. I will also continue the tradition of fund raising for local charities and worthy causes throughout the year”. The new Deputy Mayor is Cllr Brian Jones, who is also an Independent, and represents the East Central ward. Contact details for the Mayor and Deputy May can be found at www.porthcawltowncouncil.co.uk or contact the Town Council office on 01656 782215.

That char-grilled cake, King Alfred style, Lack of observation. Dad’s car scraped on a lads’ night out, Lack of concentration. Yes the unexpected happens, Simply nobody at fault. But, When someone blames an accident, Apply a pinch or two of salt. Judy Dee, Porthcawl
What goes around comes around, right? A bad word spoken or any hatred spread The ability to resist the evil ways, which we are led A wrong against another willfully committed Karma will come back to you From a long list which we are listed Ignoring the opportunity to help a lost soul Lying to those who believe what they are told The ignorance of bliss is such a harmful delight For these are the times Karma shall cause true fright To be kind to those who create anger and disgust To prevent rage or to ignore feelings of empty lust These are the acts Karma shall form good things For it is not just evil that fate brings Commit noble deeds and it will come back to you times ten Maybe not today but goodness will come around time and again Show love and kindness towards those you dislike Fight the urge to create any wrong with all of your might For nothing is for sure except for Karma keeping an eye So live truly, with love and never tell a lie Because the future is unforeseeable except our own path Every act you commit is watched and judged So make them good or face Karmas wrath. Consider yourself warned. Tuesday Turner, Kenfig Hill
BIG DECISIONS At the first light of dawn I awake with a big yawn Thoughts in my head Get me out of bed It’s a nice summers day Should I work rest or play I could take a stroll in the park Or get out the mower and cut the grass Clean out the garden shed Or weed the flower bed instead Maybe a barbeque treat Invite friends round to eat Could even go to the beach Build castles of sand Even top up my tan But I can’t decide what to plan All this seems a bit of a bore I just as well do household chores So I think I might Book a flight Go somewhere that’s nice And get away From it all Jan Thomas, Sarn

THANKSGIVING FOR A MAIDEN AUNT ‘Oh, she’s just the maiden aunt,’ they’d say But her value was rich and true A treasure for her parents Niece and nephews too And many a wayward boy and girl came to Sunday-School they say And she was one who was always there To teach them of Christ the Way. And then there was aunt and uncle who With strength ebbing away Looked for their niece’s faithful call To brighten each lonely day And what of the church, though the women there Might not be allowed much say? Yes, she would be there to polish and clean And support in every way. And the Gospel rang out from that little hall God’s word heard in many a way Thank God for this aunt who would swell the choir Faithful day after day How great is your welcome in heaven above For some will be there through you Yes, fruitful the life of this maiden aunt Well done, Faithful Servant so true. Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH
Ellie is a beautiful three-year-old Collie who loves her toys and will do anything for a tasty treat. She will require further training on her social skills around other dogs; however, she could live with another dog already established in the home, as long as the other dog is a good match for her. Ellie is looking for experienced owners who are used to the breed and are committed to her on-going training needs. She can live with children 11 years and over. Canine Carer Hannah says “Ellie is a sweet and affectionate girl, who just needs to build up her confidence. She is always eager to please, and with her love of food, this will make training more fun for her.” For more information on Ellie, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. You can also visit our website at www.dogstrust.org.uk

NEWS FROM THE TALBOT We celebrated Easter in the traditional way by having a roast lunch followed by the judging of our Easter Bonnets and a singsong of ‘In Her Easter Bonnet’. Our diner member, Betty Watson, was declared the owner of the best bonnet and won a box of chocolates. Some of our members chose to wear bunny ears. We are now heading into summer, and trying out summer recipes, e.g. in May we served Peach Melba to accompany a roast dinner, rather than the steamed puddings which seem better eaten in the cold winter months, and for a change we are added cod in breadcrumbs, rather than the cod prepared in the cook’s special batter (I suspect she adds beer to the batter!). You can find the monthly menu on our website, and would welcome new diners; as the saying goes, ‘if you don’t use it, you will lose it’. And just a reminder, every Tuesday evening from 6-7.30pm we hold a Karate class. Again, details are on our website. For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher

PORTHCAWL NCI NEWS April was a very busy month for us with 8 logged and 19 monitored incidents. So far in 2019, we have been involved in 29 logged incidents at the time of writing. A logged incident is one where we have initiated a response or where we have received a request to assist by UK Coastguard. A monitored incident is one where we are not actively participating, but are “standing by” if required. During the May bank holiday weekend we were involved in 3 incidents, all of which required use of our CCTV system and the various SAR organisations. Although we use state of the art equipment, we also rely heavily on specialised long range binoculars and monitor relevant Marine VHF radio channels. We now have 3 CCTV cameras, all controlled from our tower and constantly recording. A secure link is available for UK Coastguard or the RNLI to monitor. The secure link is being used on a regular basis and means that any UK Coastguard Operations Centre can monitor incidents remotely. This is unique to Porthcawl and we are obviously extremely proud of that achievement. Our recent bucket collections and our bookstall at the tower raised more valuable funds. Thanks to all who supported us. Your generosity is much appreciated. Nick Weedon Porthcawl NCI Media Officer

POSTCARD CONNECTIONS PROJECT KPC Youth & Community (based in Pyle) are running an intergenerational project called Postcard Connections. The project is based around the old fashioned way of keeping in touch – such as postcards! For many of us we don’t really get much in the post these days to make us feel someone cares, or wants to say hello! If you know any elderly or unwell residents/neighbours or friends who might like to receive a postcard (and don’t hear from many people otherwise), or if you work in a local residential setting within Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cornelly, Porthcawl or Cefn Cribwr) perhaps you would like to be part of this project with your residents? KPC hope is that they may like to respond to us (we have blank postcards for them) - and let us know a little about their life, and how things were when they were a young person! – We will then write back again! The aim is to build up relationships/and ultimately invite in some of those who are participating along for an afternoon tea with our young people. Please get in touch with Alison on 01656 749219 or email info@kpcyouth.com

BETH FOOT FORWARD AROUND BRITAIN A special visitor arrived at Porthcawl RNLI lifeboat station on Sunday 28 April 2019. Beth Wickes, who is walking the GB mainland coast, started the next leg of her journey at Porthcawl heading to Port Talbot lifeboat station. Beth is raising money for the RNLI, Lowland Rescue and Mountain Rescue services. She started her long walk at Tower Bridge RNLI lifeboat station in London on 3 Oct 2018. Having already covered about 1200 miles along the south coast and the West Country she expects the walk to take approximately two years. Whilst some people travel to different parts of the world for adventure, Beth decided that this country was beautiful and the walk provided not only a 4000 plus mile challenge for her, but an opportunity to visit all of our coastline. She said, “I have seen so many fabulous views so far and many strangers that I have met on the walk have been so kind and generous to me. To help, people have offered me accommodation overnight which I value and this support allows my journey to be that much more interesting too”. You can follow Beth’s progress by logging on to her website, www.bethfootforward.co.uk
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Can you believe the Bible records people sticking their tongues out at each other thousands of years ago? Don’t believe me? Look up the 57th chapter of Isaiah. Apparently, adults were capable of being sarcastic and juvenile way back then, so we didn’t invent that behaviour. We human beings have been petty and immature for thousands of years. It’s oddly comforting to know we are merely carrying on a long tradition of eye rolling, sticking out our tongues, and using humour to belittle people when they are trying to make a sincere point. It’s actually a devastating thing to do to someone. If you’ve ever had someone make a face when you were talking about something heartfelt, you know how that kind of mockery can hurt. When someone acts like a naughty child, it can be hilarious to the crowd, which makes it even crueller to target. Making faces is easier than entering into a serious debate. Eye rolling is easier than answering the hard questions. Sarcasm is easier than taking your opponent seriously. But sometimes the easy thing is the wrong thing. God Bless. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES
How can Porthcawl young people explore the Christian faith in a safe and modern way? At one time or another every thoughtful person asks the question ‘Is there a God’? Many intelligent and inquisitive people want to know, how can Christians continue believing in God in modern times? These questions are particularly on the mind of young people growing up in our multi-faith society. On Friday nights through the month of June the ‘Eden Bus’ will be parked in the Portway car park from 6.30-8.00pm for young people (aged 11-17yrs) to hang out, play the X Box and Play Station games inside the bus, and to ask questions about the Christian faith to the staff on board the bus. The bus is a ministry of The Message Trust, a Christian organisation that started in Manchester but is now reaching around the world. It is sponsored and supported in Porthcawl by Gilgal Baptist Church. For more information about the bus or the Christian faith, please contact Pastor Steve Lock on 07769043616, or Rev. Martin Gillard at Gilgal Baptist Church on 01656785046. For more information about Gilgal please visit our website: gilgalbaptistchurch.co.uk, check us out on Facebook or visit us on a Sunday.

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I have been acting in person in relation to my divorce and filed a petition on my husband’s adultery 3 months ago as I discovered that he had an affair with another woman 10 years ago. I found about the fling a year ago. We are still under the same roof at the moment. I am concerned as my Petition has been rejected at the Decree Nisi stage. Answer:I am sorry to learn of your husband’s affair and the shock of discovering this 10 years after the event. You can file for divorce if you can show to the Court that your marriage has broken down irretrievably on the fact of adultery and you have found it intolerable to live with your spouse. It appears that you have filed for Divorce roughly 9 months after you became aware of the relationship and this has presented you with a problem. Whilst the affair took place 10 years ago, the Court rules state that if you continue living under the same roof as your husband, you must file for Divorce within 6 months of becoming aware of the adultery otherwise you are deemed not to have found it intolerable living with your husband. Your Petition has ben rejected by the Judge as the Court requires you to confirm at Decree Nisi stage when you became aware of the adultery and whether you have continued living with your husband for over 6 months. Your option now is to file an amended Petition on the fact of his conduct. There will be a further court fee to pay and you are effectively starting from scratch. You should also not use the term adultery in your amended Divorce Petition but may wish to refer to the inappropriate relationship amongst your other reasons. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit then we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A cohabitation agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force - the agreement can say so. Even so, a cohabitation agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice. You must also be open about your individual financial positions when you enter into the agreement. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. If you wish to discuss this further then please contact us. YOUR DIGITAL ESTATE When you make a will, do you consider what will happen to the information you have on your mobile phone after your death? These days, we don’t print out photographs as we used to, preferring to view them on our phone or tablet. However, it is important to consider what would happen to this information in the event of your death. A widow recently won a court case against her late husband’s mobile phone company to recover treasured family photos which were locked in his phone. It took her three years and many thousands of pounds to obtain a court order to open the phone account to access pictures and videos which would help her young daughter remember her father. The problem arose because her husband had not made a will stating who should have access to his account; the phone provider took the view that it would not release the information without a court order. It is worth remembering that a phone provider cannot access a dead person’s photos if they are stored on a tablet or phone and not uploaded to a cloud. In such cases, even a court order will not force the company to release the information. Some platforms however, allow users to nominate a person to access their account after their death. They are called legacy contacts or trusted contacts. The above case is an example of how we need to think about how our estates change over time and to make provision for access to digital information in the event of our death. By making a digital will you avoid such problems by identifying executors to manage your digital estate. By allowing your executors to have access to your digital information after your death, you will avoid potential costly problems, which may eat into the size of your loved ones’ inheritance. PORTHCAWL TG NEWS Our meeting in April started on a sad note as members were asked to stand in memory of Joyce Webb. Joyce was a staunch guild member for nearly forty years serving on the committee for most of that time and holding the positions of secretary and chairman several times. She was our elder statesman who kept us on the right track and will be sadly missed for her advice and friendship. Also at the meeting names were taken of members wishing to attend the National AGM in Cheltenham in June. Our monthly lunch was by popular request at the Jolly Sailor in Newton and our craft and games groups have also met. There will be no meeting this month as so many members will be going to the National AGM. Our next meeting will be on July 10th 2.00p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Stephen Jarvis will speak on ‘Here and There/ This and That’. Sounds intriguing so do come along! PORTHCAWL IW Hello, I hope you are beginning to enjoy the summer days. We are all planning to start another IW year. Our new president for 2019 to 2020, will be Judy Moatt who is taking over from Carol Lowry. We thank Carol for her service during this IW year. It has been very productive, our speakers have been informative and good fun. Judy had given us clues about ideas she has had for our new year. They sound very interesting and I look forward to reporting on them in the future. We will be having a charity stall this year in the carnival fair. It will be as last year, surprise one pound gift parcels, so much money was made for our selected charities last year. We have an International Service Rally is taking place in Ystrad Mynach tomorrow. These gatherings are our fun days. We have a lovely meal and speakers. There will be a few pop up stalls for us to buy goodies or present as usual. I have a small correction to make, our conference next year will be in Belfast not Glasgow. 14th May and we were in the Talbot Center for our annual AGM This year is rushing by as we were discussing our summer trip to Denman. We had a good turnout of members and Sylvia Tittley our Federation rep was present. We discussed the AGM we attended in Port Talbot and agreed we had a good day. Enid our secretary asked for ideas to raise funds for our charity this year, “The Stroke Club “which is a local charity and meets in Cwrt Anghorfa every Monday, we are organising a tea in the Talbot Center for them as one of the criteria for us getting the lottery grant was helping local organisations and we chose the stroke club. Helping others and hopefully bringing a smiling to their faces is one of the benefits of being in the WI Next month our speaker will be Angela Pucker with a talk about P.A.W.S. Which should be very interesting . We are a very welcoming lot pop in and see us we meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month and you’ll have a warm welcome. Christine Callaghan

Business & finance HAVING TROUBLE GETTING A MORTGAGE ? CALL US!
HAVE YOU CLAIMED YOUR MARRIAGE ALLOWANCE?
Whilst mortgage interest rates continue to make borrowing the cheapest in history and on a sustained basis, the criteria around achieving a deal has seen massive change. Whilst younger people continue to find saving for a deposit to be difficult to say the least, the options for much older people have increased hugely. The regulation now governing mortgage lending requires that lenders perform their most stringent diligence of applications, to ensure a culture of responsible lending. It’s only fair that if you are asking a lender to lend you a typical figure that can range anywhere between one and two hundred thousand pounds, that they do all they can to ensure that you can afford the loan and that they are going to get their repayments each time, and hence the money back. As for much older borrowers, there are several million mortgages, which are on an interest-only basis still, with older borrowers being unable to find the cash to redeem the loan. In this sector, there has been significant progress in providing solutions and at very sensible rates, providing the fair criteria are met on affordability and borrowing amounts against the property’s value. This essentially means that older borrowers are now able to effectively carry on a mortgage until very late in life or even until death, without having to find the capital to pay off the mortgage. This is a massive boost for a sector where huge concerns exist about how people will clear their mortgage debts. Having recently entered our 33rd year of assisting the public with their mortgage requirements, and with a particular specialisation in later life borrowing, we are ideally placed to know the solutions that exist across the whole market, together with the requirements to qualify for a particular scheme or other. Each year we help dozens of clients realise their goals with regard to their housing finance, and we are delighted to be now assisting the Grandchildren of many clients, having been of service to both Grandparents and parents before them. Astonishingly half of all married couples living in Porthcawl are not claiming their marriage allowance. Currently it’s worth £250 per annum or £20 more per month in your salary. It gets better! You can backdate the application to April 2015 and claim a whopping £1,150 if you qualify. Here’s an example : take a husband & wife scenario where the husband is earning £35,000 p.a. and the wife is at home looking after the children. If she is not using any of her personal tax allowance she can transfer the married allowance (£1,250) to her husband. If she hasn’t been working in the last four years then together they can claim the allowance for all this period back to April 2015. If she has a part time job but earns less than £11,250 this tax year then they will still qualify for the £250 and maybe all of the £1,150 rebate. This years personal tax allowance is £12,500 and the transferable allowance/married allowance is 10% of this, which is £1,250. Effectively you are claiming the allowance from your wife/husband or civil partner and your tax free limit increases from £12,500 to £13,750 so you’re giving yourself a pay rise. This £1,250 would normally be taxed at 20% but rather than giving this to HMRC the result is a tax saving of £250 for the higher earning partner. They must not be earning more than £50,000 pa to qualify. The person giving up the allowance must instigate the transfer with HMRC and they will then have a reduced personal allowance of £11,250, which means they can still earn this amount without paying any tax. To take this further you can ring HMRC or Abacus Assurance or go online to www.gov.uk/apply-marriage-allowance. It takes about two months to process, best of luck. We estimated there are up to 600 couples that could qualify in Porthcawl which makes a potential total tax refund of over £600,000.

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
Our plant sale and fund raising event last month was a great success and, although the very cold night before the sale was challenging, we managed to keep the plants in tip top condition for everyone to buy. As the Club lecture season draws to a close we are all looking forward to our trips out to explore other gardens and visit interesting places. This is the time of year that we all tend to focus on our own plots and have been busy planting out the summer bedding and putting out pots and baskets full of colourful plants. Watering plants becomes a key job around now as all plants need water to settle them into their new homes and further watering to ensure that they are established. Just because it has rained don’t assume that they have had enough to drink! It is also time to begin keeping an eye out for pests who are just waiting to get into feast on the fresh vegetation. However don’t forget to make the most of the warm sunny days, set aside the hoe for a while, and just enjoy your gardens! PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Founded in 1959 this is our Diamond Jubilee year, 60 years of enjoyment, support and encouragement for gardeners and allotment holders alike. Our success in this is reflected by our membership of almost 200. In the summer months we run coach trips to gardens in South Wales and the West Country, in the winter we organise lectures on gardening topics. Our Shop in Heol y Goedwig is a mini Garden Centre selling everything for the gardener, expert or novice. We have fertilizers sold by weight or 25 Kg sack, netting and ground cover by the metre, bags of manure and top soil, bamboos of all lengths, weedkillers and pesticides. Seed potatoes, onion sets and shallots are available from late January. Our multi-purpose compost, Clover, is a ‘Which’ Best Buy rating 100%. The Shop is a forum for discussion of gardening topics where an ‘expert’ is usually on hand for advice. Our opening times are Wed and Sat am 9 to 12. We are keen supporters of local charities donating £1500 in each of the last two years. Our June visit is to Stockton Bury, Herefordshire with lunch in Leominster. New members are always welcome at £4, seniors £3 pa. Note that the familiar blue slug killer pellets containing metaldehyde are withdrawn from sale from June. Frank Fulgoni

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB Spring being a tough act to follow God invented June! Warmer weather, extra sunlight and extra work! The priority this month is keeping on top of the weeds (why do they always seem to grow faster than the flowers) Pull them when they are baby weeds, so much less of a battle. If we are lucky enough to have a warm June, water, water, water, especially newly organised baskets and planters, (keeps you fit!) 90% of plants that fail in their first year do so through lack of water. Stems of mint placed in water will produce roots in a week, marvellous; remember to plant them on in pots though as mint spreads like wildfire! Keeps flies ways too. Our Village garden open day on 16th June, 11-5, in conjunction with the NGS, it’s a fab day out, lots of beautiful gardens to visit, plants to buy and cakes to eat – perfect! Did you know plants have a sense of touch, they can feel you picking their leaves, a study has shown plant leaves fire pain signals, to warn neighbouring leaves of impending danger – cut and come again salad leaves will never be the same again! THE FLOOD OF DOUBT Doubt exists because our minds are constantly moving and our senses contact with the world without control. Sometimes the flood of information is so great, our minds are in a spin and confusion presides. When this happens we cant see the impact of our simple decisions and inner reflection becomes sabotaging. Consider when you’re in conversation with another. Your mind is busy and so is theirs. They say something, you react to what they are saying and they react with a look away or a roll of the eyes! Then doubt rolls in - Did I say the right thing? The next day it rolls in, again and we repeat the story in our mind and we add to the doubt! This doubting creates distance, anxiety and when we meet the person again, we try harder. We want to be seen to be nice. Doubt keeps us on our toes, it doesn’t foster relax. The great teacher Ajahn Chah had an antidote to doubt. He called it the ‘I don’t know mind’ When a flurry of doubt arose, he didn’t force his will onto getting a result or administering control, but investigated the mind state. This requires pausing, stopping and attending to the confusion. After all its only bodily patterns and thought. If you know that you are confused, say ‘Confusion, this is confusion’ and do nothing. This is also known as patience. Really pay attention to the weight of your hands, the speed of speech and the tension around the chest area. Anchor your self to cultivating meditation in any circumstance and see if there is any benefit. Take care this month. Neville Evans
GREEN LIGHT BENEFITS Researchers have discovered some fascinating links associating the colour green with the heart. For example, an Austrian experiment found that exposing people to green fluorescent light seemed to have a soothing effect on their hearts, affecting heart rate variability (HRV). 10 People who endure continual worry and anxiety seem to have decreased HRV, which is also associated with a number of disorders, including congestive heart failure and depression. If exposure to green light increases HRV, we can imagine that has heart-protective effects and might help to heal grief. Moreover, if green light changes vasculature, then it stands to reason that other conditions involving the vasculature would be impacted by it. In support of this concept, a study was just published indicating that migraine severity is reduced in the presence of green light. Taken from greenmedinfo.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

COST OF CANCER Well what an eventful few months we’ve just had. We had our very 1st Melodies in Margam and then a few weeks ago we had our 5th charity ball. It was the first year in our new venue which was The Bear in Cowbridge and it was such a fantastic night we raised just over £5400. Thank you to everyone who donated a raffle or auction prize. I would like to give a big shout out to our volunteers who helped out on the night. We simply cannot put events on without their help. So thank you. Don’t forget we’ve got our yearly walk coming up in August with a brand new route. This year it’s going from Blaengarw to Porthcawl and I personally think it’s a prettier route. So if you would like to join us on this years walk, please get in touch info@costofcancer.org.uk. We will also need volunteers to marshal the route so if you’ve got few hours to spare please do get in touch. We’ve also got a night walk up to Penyfan for the Summer Solstice on the 21st June. Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
The last weekend of April saw 28 Choir members and 64 friends and family set out for our tour to Newquay and Looe in Cornwell. The highlight of the weekend was a concert held at the unique venue of the RNLI lifeboat station in Looe on the 27th of April. The choir performed a rich variety of both Welsh and English music, which was enthusiastically received by the large audience filling the hall. The choir was joined by the Polperro Male Choir who enriched the evening with a blend of Cornish and traditional male voice choir arrangements. All proceeds from the concert were donated to the RNLI, a worthy cause dear to the hearts of both the hosts and guests alike. Our Ladies section are, as usual, busy with various events and fundraising activities including a Summer Fare held at Trinity Church on Friday 26th July. All welcome. We would like to congratulate our accompanists Richard Davis and his wife Jen on the birth of their son Williams Michael who came in at an eye-watering 9lb 8 1/2 oz. On a sad note, we have to announce the recent passing of a much loved and respected choir member Chris Collins. Chris had been an active member of the choir for over 10 years. He will be sadly missed. Our condolences go out to his family. There is always a warm welcome for anyone interested in being part of a choir at Arlington Road Church at 7.30pm on a Tuesday and Friday. Ian Williams
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Alan Thomas Memorial Competition where each member could enter up to 4 digital images and/or prints, Mono only, no colour. It was expertly judged by Les Loosemore who gave some very good constructive critique on every image. The winner of this competition was decided by the sum of their 2 top scoring entries. It was a tie between Howard Evans and Richard Craze so we then had to introduce their 3rd highest scoring entry making Richard the winner. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels; it’s all very informal. So if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR. COR BRO OGWR - A FAMILY AFFAIR
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW A point that I have touched upon in the past, but which has particular relevance now, is film funding, because documentary production costs a lot of money. It is not just a matter of picking up a camera and running around with it – a great deal of research and preparation goes into making a film. This year I am producing a documentary about a major event that occurred in the past, and the most I will say at the moment is that it involves aviation. Its budget runs into the lower end of five figures, and will be divided into three parts: a grant application, sponsorship and other resources within my own company. But sponsorship is very hard to come by these days, so I am opening one part up to interested parties, whether businesses, clubs or individuals – and this is important because the grant application needs to provide evidence that other funding sources are being actively sought. If you are interested to find out more, send an email to anthonyhontoir@hotmail.co.uk and mark it Film Funding. You will find out what the film is to be about, and you might be able to provide some much-needed assistance to get it made. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films Tel: 01656 771775

We often say, within the choir, that we are just like a big family; many of us have been members since the choir’s inception and our accompanist Glenn Crooks has been with us for many years. But our Spring Concert had some real family extras. Harpist Angharad Edwards is the daughter of a chorister and baritone Ian Howarth is our conductor’s father. Angharad, accompanying Goodall’s Requiem, showcased her talent in this difficult work. Baritone Ian Howarth brought much feeling to the Goodall. It felt very appropriate to have our young so-prano, Victoria Adams, sing with our ‘more mature’ baritone. Victoria has a soaring voice and sang with great presence. The choir, apprehensive in rehearsals of two very fast sections, nevertheless galloped through them and hopefully the audience did not hear the sighs of relief when the end arrived. The second part was more familiar to all - Faure’s Requiem, where soloists again gave magnificent performances. Pianist Benjamin Teague, organist, composer and a Masters student of The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, blended in effortlessly. This was a very satisfying concert, incorporating many different elements. Thank you Rosie for your skill in bringing out our best. Dominique Spearey

CANTORION COETY PREPARE FOR THEIR CONCERTS Cantorion Coety is currently busy preparing for a number of concerts planned for this spring and summer. The Choir has already appeared at two separate performances in the dome of the Botanical Gardens of Wales, Llanarthne, near Cross Hands, where special weekend events were taking place. The focus of the current preparations will be for the Annual Concert at Tabernacl, Derwen Road, Bridgend at 7pm on Friday 14th June. Appearing with Cantorion Coety at the event will be Rhydian Jenkins, Tenor and the Ogmore Vale Male Voice Choir, under the baton of Eira Paskin, who is also the M.D. of Cantorion Coety. Two other concerts are planned for June, when Cantorion Coety will be appearing in Porthcawl, at the All Saints Flower Festival, on June 8th, followed later the same day with a performance at the Choirs in the Castle Festival, Coity. For all members it is a busy time, but very rewarding. Every chorister is grateful for the support and commitment of the music team, Musical Director, Eira Paskin and Accompanist, Gareth Waite. BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR The Cornwall International Choral Festival is now over and what a successful festival it was. Concerts, with choirs from the UK and abroad, were performed in Truro Cathedral, St. John’s Church St. Austell and St. Andrews Church Redruth with some amazing music performed by all the choirs who took part, especially Dagilelis Boys Choir from Lithuania whose performance was sensational. The refreshments, provided by Mevagissey and Four Lanes Male Choirs were very welcomed, new friendships were struck up, and a great time was had by all. Thank you to both choirs, including the ladies for looking after us so well. We entered the competition on Saturday afternoon with another six amazing choirs and were very proud to receive an award for the best single performance in the over 41 voices category with a rousing rendition of the famous Welsh hymn Builth. The choir would like to say thank you to our wonderful Musical team of Ryan Wood and Stephanie Bailey, the support of Scott Williams organist and Stewart Roberts, MD of Pendyrus Male Choir for the time and effort they put in to enable us to achieve the level of music we performed. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Sad to report the passing of Bridgend singer/songwriter Rob Ash. He was best known as a member of 70s band James Hogg, which released three singles. Rob became a Christian in 1973 and had an illustrious music career touring Canada and the USA in two gospel bands, and releasing several CDs. The last few years saw him team up again with his great friend Phil James in a duo called Phil and Ash. He appeared twice on my radio show some years ago and gave me a CD of his demos, which I treasure. Rob was a gentle, kind and humorous man and will be sorely missed. The Oceans Festival takes place at the Hi Tide on June 29th at 1.00pm with 19 acts. Organiser Phil Jones said it is original music only, no covers! Sounds great to me so there will be no

LOCAL CHOIR PROVIDE VOCAL SUPPORT FOR HERONSBRIDGE Heronsbridge School recently received a donation of £300 from local male voice choir Bois Goetre-Hen to help with the purchase of musical equipment. The money, from the choir’s fundraising activities, was presented by its Chairman, Aubrey Evans, who said ‘Heronsbridge is close to our hearts, with two of our choristers teaching at the school. Its a huge pleasure to support their work.’ Bois Goetre-Hen is one of the youngest male choirs in the area, formed just ten years ago. They have built a reputation for powerful and passionate performances and an eclectic repertoire, from traditional songs such as ‘I bob un sy’n fyddlon’ and Labi Siffre’s ‘Something inside so strong’ to Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ and Snow Patrol’s ‘Run’. To celebrate their 10th anniversary year, the Bois are hosting a Gala Concert in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl on Saturday 17th August. KENFIG HILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR The photo of our Music team: - Joshua Xerri M.D. and Rhian Jenkins, accompanist and Deputy M.D. is taken from our recent fundraising concert at the Grand Pavilion for Porthcawl National Coastwatch raising a massive £4700 enabling them to install more cameras along our local coastline. Our Patrons concert (in a new venue) and our joint concert with the Dublin Male Voice Choir were huge successes showcasing some new songs added to our repertoire. Our bi-annual tour to sing at Selby Abbey was hugely enjoyed by all and what a pleasure to sing in such a magnificent setting. Our busy schedule comes to an end with our highlight of the year, the Annual Gala Concert at The Grand Pavilion on 20th July. Any remaining tickets are on sale from the box office at The Pavilion and can be bought online on their website. We welcome anyone interested in singing to come and join us. We rehearse on Mondays & Thursdays 7-9pm at The Greenacres Motel, North Cornelly. Should anyone want information about the main choir, this can be found at www.facebook.com/KHMVC/ on our website at www.kenfigwelshmalechoir.org.uk or contact the secretary Tony Ulberini at tonyulberini@gmail.com - Tel: 07866 742452 Dave Xerri Publicity & Media Officer seaside news | 53

Sport reports ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL C25K COMPLETE A GREAT START TO 2019 FOR PEN Y BONT SLSC
Porthcawl Runners have just completed another Couch to 5k programme – with this latest one arguably the club’s most successful yet. The latest batch of recruits took their first steps into the unknown back in March and, nine weeks later, some 18 of them successfully ‘graduated’ on May 11, by running their very first parkrun at Porthcawl. Led by coach Lucy Jones, they were helped along the way by various club members – many of whom have done the C25k themselves. In addition, they were each flanked on the parkrun by a club member who helped see them all the way to the finish line. Congratulations to all of the new graduates: Lisa Waters, Steve Cobley, Beth Evans, Marion Evans, Rob Evans, Kelly Middleton, Donna Johnson-Cooper, Ceryl Giess, Linda Thomas, Sheree O’Keefe, Leanne Walker, Becky Richards, Eira Jones, Ffion Lewis, Myf Power, Leanne Griffiths, Chris Sharland and Bev Rosser-Smith. While they now continue their individual running journeys, a massive congratulations also to the six club members who took on the London Marathon this year: Dave Bennett, Steve Picton, Juliet Picton, Julian Maine, Romana Maine and Jeff Thomas. Steve and Juliet, meanwhile, also raised almost £2,500 for the Tuberous Sclerosis Association (TSA). Carl Field
Pen y Bont SLSC kicked the 2019 season off in style with the Welsh Stillwater Championships in January and the Great British Stillwater Championships in April. The combined efforts of all competitors across all age groups secured the Wilkinson Sword, which is a hugely prestigious trophy! The masters competitors performed exceedingly well in winning first place overall in the Welsh and breaking five Welsh Masters records. The open team also accomplished highly in coming second place in the Welsh - hot on the heels of the renowned pool specialists from Crawley Town. Junior members did themselves proud too by finishing sixth in the Welsh, and the Youth Girls’ Medley Relay team performed outstandingly in the British too - they broke the British female youth Medley Relay record! Pen y Bont’s nipper section has also been busy maintaining the club’s excellent start to the season in both of the Championships. The youngsters achieved an amazing third place in the Welsh and eleventh place in the British - more than doubling last year’s points score in the same British competition. In light of everyone’s performances, the beach season promises to be exciting and impressive as Welsh team trials and national beach championships get close! Pen y Bont SLSC

Summer sunset surf time again as we reach May and the light evenings after work. We have only had a few swells so far this May with more in April. With soaring car park fees in both Ogmore by sea and Southerndown the numbers of surfers is dropping off year after year in this area… and let’s face it, who wants to pay £5 or £6 to park up for a few hours or a quick dip. The River Mouth still seems to be popular but it’s not breaking as good as it used to with the lack of sand forming the build up of pebble banks for the waves to break steep and faster. Storms have washed them away and the dredger wrecked any chance of them building up again any time soon with the left hander now completely gone. Now is the time to get some late evening surfs after work before we hit those flat spells that we get in June and July while the water is relatively mild and ice cream heads are not a threat…… we should get some more waves before May is out. Happy surfing! David A. Batten tuskasurf.co.uk
