How recycling centres will reopen in Bridgend County Borough Bridgend County Borough Council has revealed details on how it will reopen its community recycling centres at Tythegston, Maesteg and Brynmenyn on Tuesday 26 May 2020. The sites, which had to close as part of all-Wales efforts to combat the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, will be available for essential use only and will have a number of temporary measures in place. They will be open between 8.30am-7pm during the week, and 8.30am-5pm at weekends. The authority has emphasised that the recycling centres are not reopening for business as normal, but to cater only for urgent items which cannot wait until lockdown is over. With long queues likely, the council is arranging to put traffic management in place and is urging people to only take waste to the community recycling centres if it is absolutely necessary. As an alternative, people are being asked to consider whether the waste can be stored safely at home until lockdown restrictions have been lifted, or disposed of using the bulky waste collection service. To help cut down on waiting times and manage the number of vehicles using the sites, an odds-and-even car number plate system is being put in place following successful trials in other parts of the UK. How the number plate system works If the last number of a vehicle number plate is even – i.e. 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 – that vehicle will be granted access on Wednesday 27, Friday 29 and Sunday 31 May, and Tuesday 2, Thursday 4 and Saturday 6 June. This will apply to plates reading e.g. VH92 GHD or RECYL8 where the last numbers - ‘2’ and ‘8’ – are both even. If the last number of the vehicle number plate is odd – i.e. 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 – then that vehicle will be allowed to enter a site on Tuesday 26, Thursday 28 and Saturday 30 May, and Monday 1 June, Wednesday 3 June, Friday 5 June and Sunday 7 June. This will apply to plates reading e.g. GJ25 HJK or PRIV8 A3 where the last numbers – ‘5’ and ‘3’ - are both odd. Further details and a schedule for the recycling centres will be made available at the council’s website before the sites reopen. Accessing the sites The council intends to put a mixture of traffic management, road closures and alternative routes in place to ensure people can access the sites safely. Staff will also be on hand to offer advice and support to drivers. At Tythegston, access will only be available to vehicles travelling in from the A48 – there will be no site access from the A4106 Bridgend Road. At Brynmenyn, a diversion will direct vehicles to approach the site on George Thomas Avenue by driving and queuing along St Theodore’s Way and Chilcott Avenue. Access to the site at Maesteg will be normal with no further changes necessary.

At each site, only cars will be allowed access. Until further notice, vans, trailers and 4x4 crew cab vehicles will not be allowed in, and the permit scheme will not be available. Only a few cars will be let in to the sites at a time, so delays must be expected. Drivers are being advised in advance that they will need to queue, and that they should not get out of their cars until it is their turn. Using the sites All items and materials MUST be sorted before entering a recycling centre, and only one person will be allowed to get out of the car to dispose of waste. Staff will not be able to help unload or move items from cars due to social distancing requirements, so please only bring waste that one person can carry safely. As only a few cars will be let in each time, visitors should have no difficulty maintaining social distancing while at the sites, but anyone who refuses to do so will be asked to leave immediately, as will anyone who is abusive to staff. Deputy Leader Hywel Williams said: “Any unnecessary travel increases the risk of exposure to the coronavirus for you, for staff and for other users, so please think about whether it is absolutely essential to visit the recycling centre while lockdown is in place. “Under no account should anyone enter a site if they or someone they live with has symptoms of Covid-19, such as a high temperature or a new continuous cough. “Please do not take waste to a site that you could otherwise recycle as part of the weekly kerbside collection. There is no limit on how much recycling you can put out, and you can always order additional recycling containers from the council website.” Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We anticipate that these temporary measures will need to be in place for several weeks before we can start to look at returning to a more normal service. “In the meantime, the council is working alongside its waste partner Kier to ensure that weekly recycling collections and fortnightly waste collections of household waste can continue without interruption, and that the community recycling sites can be used for essential visits safely and without exposing staff and users to the Covid-19 coronavirus. “The pandemic is far from over and we must maintain our guard at all times, but together, we can help maintain a strong waste and recycling service for everyone during the Covid-19 crisis.” For more information, visit the recycling pages of www.bridgend.gov.uk For more information, contact Communications Manager Liam Ronan on (01656) 643217 Email: liam.ronan@bridgend.gov.uk Website: www.bridgend.gov.uk seaside news | 3

Your views WAITING FOR LOCKDOWN TO CEASE Dear Editor, Imagine a place by the sparkling seaside, where there was always lots of fun and laughter, where the fair is now closed – the gates locked up, like a prison, not a soul to be seen; this is the story of that very time. Eight weeks into lockdown, Coney Beach fair is still left in despair. Bored, annoyed, terrified, everyone is isolating because that’s what we are told to do! Deserted, the fairground cries for people to appear. The fair is thinking got itself, “Why did they disappear?” I miss the taste of mouth-watering candyfloss, the sweet sugary doughnuts. The rich chips drowned in vinegar. I’m licking my lips. No children shouting, “I want ice-cream!” There are no screams from families with their adrenaline pumping from the wild rides. During this pandemic… there is no one to be seen. The Piccalo Bar is closed, along with the rest. Cafes are all closed: they don’t know how long for. All chat and coffees cancelled. Cancelled because we have to social distance. The prom is a grey blanket. Nothing there. It may have the odd runner, cyclist or dog walker doing their daily exercise. The benches bare. Nobody to comfort them as they cry out for attention, “Come, have a rest,” they say. They are all being ignored. Nobody sits. Heartbroken, the steps wait for people to celebrate their new life. No children to dip their tiny toes into the refreshing water. Building the new steps was supposed to be amazing. Amazing because they were supposed to give lots of pleasure to the people of Porthcawl. Last summer the beaches were crowded. Children building sandcastles in the golden sands, families having barbecues. The smells of sizzling burgers. Children paddling in the warm sea. Now… there’s not a sole to be seen. The sand, gold like the sun, shimmering in the glistening sun set. There might be the odd person out for their daily exercise, but nothing more. No litter is left, covering the golden beach, after everyone has a long day sunbathing in the scorching sun. When the tide is coming in, you can hear the sea smashing against the salted rocks, full of seaweed. You can hear it because there is silence. No music thumping from the fair. Porthcawl town is supposed to be the place to be. Lively pubs and restaurants. Families crowding the streets, shopping, eating ice cream. People you may see now are wearing masks. Masks to protect themselves. It makes me feel uncomfortable as I watch them; a cold shiver runs down my spine. Shops are closed. The streets are dead; it’s like a morgue. The buildings stand tall as soldiers. They too are discombobulated as to what is going on. Signs everywhere telling people to go home, to stay safe, to protect the NHS. Multi-coloured rainbows everywhere, showing support to our NHS. There is one good thing: less pollution. Less rubbish and not much traffic on the lonely roads. But there is only one thing on my mind: ‘when will this time be gone? When will this time return to normal?’ If Boris had shut the borders, if everyone had stayed inside, if everyone had listened; then I wouldn’t be locked inside. When will this deadly virus end? LOCAL BUSINESS CLUB DONATE PPE TO LOCAL CARE HOMES & CHARITIES

Dear Editor, I’m getting in touch as a committee member of BVBC (Bridgend Vale Business Club), I believe we have a heart warming and positive story to share amidst all of the negativity going around. BVBC committee decided we would use money we had set aside to purchase £1000 worth PPE in the form of masks, hand sanitizers and antibacterial wipes for those in need of it. We decided we would deliver PPE to the following care homes and charities: – Glanffrwd Care Home Pencoed; – Foxtroy Care Home Tondu; – Blind Veterans Association; – Awen Care Home Bridgend. On Monday 25th of May, myself (Steve Richmond of Steve Richmond Carpets) and Lady Helen Mary Morgan Wooldridge of Fake It Beauty delivered £1000 worth of PPE to the three care homes and one charity in the Bridgend borough. Steve Richmond, Bridgend

COST OF CANCER

MEDITATION

Wow so much has happened hasn’t it since I last did an article for the Seaside News? And now two months on nothing much has changed. Hopefully soon there will be some lockdown lifting. We trust you are doing ok during lockdown. I do not know about you, but I’ve found it really hard. The first few weeks were almost like being on holiday but after that I have really missed people. I am such a people person so at times I have found it really hard.

Behaviour has changed and social distancing is working. Walking in the local CO-OP, I noticed that people are engaging in a lot of rapid eye scanning, checking and double-checking. This is a response to a worryful mind. Eye contact is also avoided and movements of people’s hands a little erratic. Completely natural in the circumstances. I know that there is a weight of thoughts that sit behind this behaviour. There is suffering - visible here and now. I do recall writing many months ago about how you can hold your hands and use the position of your hands to provide a natural pause, an opening for self-compassion. Meditation in daily life! You can ask - What is the inclination of the mind and heart now? Many times through out the day, the hand can be placed over the heart area. Affirming that in struggle, it will be ok. If this can break the pattern just for one moment. The life of threat and tunnel vision may be opened to a new Psychological freedom. This is called Mindfulness in Buddhism - simply knowing thoughts, knowing the body. May we meet as strangers in the Coop with ease! Neville Evans

Deadline date for the July issue is: Monday 15th June We are still hoping to go ahead with our annual walk on the 8th August, please do email me to let me know if you are interested or not. We could still socially distance, for example we could have a staggered start, no large groups, I would be really interested in your ideas on how we could make this work. As a charity we are really lucky as we run from the offices of Moss Technical so we don’t have any overheads but we still do need funds to help people, so if you’ve got any fundraising ideas again I would really love to hear them. Below is the image for the walk and also the logo for the company who sponsored us this year. They are Autobahn Finance, thank you to Craig and Sarah Judd for your support this year. Please do get in touch if you would like to put your names down for the walk. We can get in touch closer to the time tos get you registered. We really do need an idea of how many people are interested. Anyway, keep yourselves safe and look after your friends, families and neighbours. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

THE BENEFITS OF ASTAXANTHIN So what is this mystery nutrient? It’s a deep red-colored phytonutrient synthesized by microalgae called Haematococcus. It’s grown in fresh water using sophisticated techniques that encourage the algae to grow its own powerful medicines that protect it from oxidation, UV radiation and other environmental stresses. When harvested from the algae and concentrated into a liquid, astaxanthin becomes the most powerful antioxidant known in the natural world, demonstrating 550 times the antioxidant power of Vitamin E, for example. Now why is antioxidant power important? Think about it: Much of what goes on during the ageing of the human body is due to oxidation. Every time you breathe, you’re inhaling some oxygen, right? That oxygen reacts with your cells to create energy, but the byproduct of that energy is the creation of free radicals. These free radicals cause DNA damage, nerve cell damage, accelerated ageing of internal organs and more. The way to stop those free radicals is with antioxidants, which bind to them, neutralising their damaging effects. Astaxanthin, it turns out, is so good at halting free radicals that it seems to confer miracle-class health benefits to the human body... benefits that might be described as “anti-ageing” or “reversing disease.” Read more at www.naturalnews.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

Local history JOHN STREET 1911

Most photos of John Street seem to be taken at the sea end; but here’s a rare one from the Lias Road end. It’s postmarked 4th April,1911 so it was probably taken when the new Post Office ( Coral Bookmakers today) opened in 1910. The gas lamps on the left are outside ‘Bon Marche’ which at the time was owned by George Meredith not Mr. Harris. The advert is taken from the Porthcawl News 10th August,1911. The Harris family, however, celebrated their centenary in 1913. Although originally named ‘East View’ the building on the right eventually became known as ‘Morgan’s Dining Rooms; named after Elizabeth Morgan, the Restaurant House-Keeper who occupied the premises from 1894 until a few years after WW1. Her husband Charles was a builder’s labourer. They had three children, two daughters Gladys and Merab; and one son Cliff, who is remembered on the Porthcawl Memorial. According to the 1938 Shops list the premises became the home of ‘Leak’s’ Tobacconist. Today, of course, it is ‘Balkwill’s’ Chemists. Before that it was the Porthcawl Bookshop; preceded by a shop called ‘Flowers and Things.’ In the 1960s Peter Hubbard-Miles had a hairdressing salon upstairs and a restaurant, called Chapter One, on the ground floor. WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Jacqueline Nearne was born on 27 May 1916. The eldest daughter of an English father and a Spanish mother, she moved to France in 1923 then when France fell in 1940 she made her way to Britain via Portugal and Gibraltar. During the summer of 1942, Jacqueline trained as a radio operator for the SOE. Her younger sister, Eileen, and brother, Francis, also served in the SOE. On 25 January 1943, she parachuted into France to work for the Stationer circuit. Jacqueline carried spare parts for her radios inside a cosmetics bag. The average life expectancy for a wireless operator was only six weeks. However, Jacqueline remained in the field for fifteen months, returning to Britain on 10 April 1944 via a Westland Lysander, an aircraft commonly used to deliver and rescue agents. A passionate knitter, and nicknamed ‘Jackie Red Socks’, after the war Jacqueline worked for the United Nations. She also played ‘Cat’, a character based on herself, in the 1946 production of Now It Can Be Told, a drama-documentary about the SOE. School reports OLYMPICS-STYLE GLOBAL LOCKDOWN COMPETITION

email us your report to: info@seasidenews.co.uk Even under lockdown conditions Newton Primary School is striving to ensure that when your little one starts nursery they are prepared. If your child is aged 3 before the 31st August 2020 you can enroll online at BCBC for your child’s nursery place. Please email the school on newtonprimary@bridgend.gov.uk where we will keep you updated with our schools settling in process when our current conditions are eased. Remember family time is special! Stay home, save lives and protect the NHS

PCS DOES PPE!

Students, families and teachers from St Clare’s joined an Olympics-style global lockdown competition with thousands of students around the world. The inaugural ‘Cognita Home Games’ was a series of fun fitness and skills challenges to do from home, organised by the global schools family Cognita. With over 60 schools from across the world involved, ‘athletes’ competed to win the trophy for the highest average score and the highest average participation. St Clare’s also formed part of Team Europe. Individual medals were also up for grabs for participants who gained the highest scores in their age group. Following the opening ceremony, St Clare’s athletes could participate in up to four fitness challenges and four skills challenges, with the closing ceremony on the Friday. Helen Hier, Head Teacher said: “This event captured the imagination of our PE staff and teachers alike, and inspired our students and families to get involved. By competing, we recognised the important contribution of sport to each individual student’s passion, pride and character, as well as the vital role of sport to physical and mental health. We were delighted to join with schools all over the world in the Cognita Home Games. It was a lot of fun.” Helen Hier Head Teacher

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL At the moment we are all living in uncertain times. Although our doors are closed, we are ‘virtually open’. Newton Primary staff would like to say a huge thank you to all of our amazing NHS and front line key workers for all that they are doing for us. We would also like to thank all of our parents and carers for their continued support and working with us to engage the children in home learning. All of our teachers and support staff are adapting to a new form of virtual teaching. Our staff are proudly providing care and support to the key workers children in our local hub school. Our pupils are doing amazing online work through using the online learning platforms such as Hwb and Classdojo. Nursery and reception are busy doing daily activities based on a story, which is read to them by a member of staff. Our dedicated members of staff have also provided home learning packs which have been delivered to those who have requested them. Our website is constantly being updated with maths and language challenges for all ages. Please visit our website for a variety of activities, stories and positive quotes to help children make sense of their emotions through these difficult times. Staff at Porthcawl Comprehensive School have joined the millions of people across the world in the relentless battle against Covid 19. As well as volunteering at the Porthcawl Hub, enabling key workers to go to work without worrying about childcare, staff at PCS have gone one step further in the effort. With the global shortage of Personal Protective Equipment, the Design and Technology Department is pouring its talents into making PPE face shields for the local community. Already the school has made and delivered almost a thousand protective visors in the Porthcawl and Bridgend area. Grateful recipients include Cwm Taf Morgannwg nurses, pharmacies, opticians, dentists, nursing homes, vets, care agencies, post office workers and Porthcawl Co-op staff. Front line workers are profoundly grateful for the support and demand for the visors in the local vicinity is very high. The school has set up a Go Fund Me page in the hope of covering the costs of the materials, and volunteers will continue making the shields whilst the demand is there. A popular image on social media shows the Houses of Parliament about to be swamped by three waves of increasing height: Covid-19, Brexit and Climate Change. While the UK government struggles with the first of these, the second wave is about to descend on us. Negotiators have until the end of June to request an extension of the transition period. The idea that 40 years of replacement agreements on trade, quality standards, environmental issues, and a host of other matters can be completed in the next six months, while tackling the greatest pandemic in living memory, is clearly pure fantasy. This is Project Reality: we are heading for the disaster of “no deal” on New Year’s Day 2021. This would make the shortages and panic buying of a few months ago look like a picnic in the park. Another demonstration of a million people in Westminster is not possible right now, but during June, B4E members will be using the “new normal” of Skype, Teams and other platforms, social media, e-mails and good old-fashioned letters, to lobby MPs, Senedd Members and the media to support an extension of the transition period. Please join in. Allison Felton bridgend@walesforeurope.org

JUNE UPDATE By the time you read this my year as Mayor of Porthcawl will have come to an end. There were too many positives to list them all; but the highlights have included attending fabulous events show-casing local talent, celebrating no less than three 100th birthdays, and meeting five WW2 veterans at Porthcawl Museum last August. Our fund raising committee has worked hard and faced a curtailment in activity, but even so has raised just over £6,000 thanks to the generosity of local people. We had great support from many of our restaurants, pubs, clubs, and community support groups. I want to especially acknowledge the generous support of the Hi Tide. One notable consistent theme that emerges from meeting our local charities and community support groups is that the sustainability of many is an issue because of their volunteer demographic. We have to try and find ways of getting people off of Facebook pages and onto local committees - volunteering and playing a part in taking our town forward. We are, as I have often heard said, a small town with a big heart, but the people 20 | seaside news

Deadline date for the July issue is: Monday 15th June BEACHES NEED LIFEGUARDS BEFORE THEY CAN RE-OPEN I hope everyone is safe and well during the Coronavirus pandemic. One of the many problems this has created in Porthcawl relates to lifeguards employed by the RNLI and others at our beaches. I have contacted the RNLI who told me that a group of lifeguards in the process of being recruited in March, but with no contracts of employment, are ineligible for the government’s very ambitious furloughing scheme. No one taken on after the designated cut-off date can be put onto furlough. I understand that the Treasury had to devise rules to prevent abuse but with people like lifeguards, who have specialised skills and who only work in the summer, there is a need for flexibility and I will be taking up their case with government. Unfortunately, while this uncertainty persists, many lifeguards will be forced to seek other work in order to get income so their services may not be available this year when our beaches reopen. Lifeguards do not grow on trees – it can take years to give them the essential life-saving skills that we all rely on if we take a trip to the seaside. One thing is sure – our beaches will not be able to re-open safely unless we have our local lifeguards on hand. JAMIE WALLIS MS for Bridgend

NHS OPEN FOR BUSINESS One of the unintended consequences of the Coronavirus lockdown has been the massive drop in the number of people turning up at A&E departments, including the Princess of Wales. Outpatient and elective surgery appointments were postponed to make room for Coronavirus cases. Lockdown means fewer opportunities for road and industrial accidents and having no pubs open means fewer alcohol-related incidents. However, anxiety about contracting the virus in hospital has halved the number of people seeking emergency care. While that fear has made some think twice about visiting A&E when they really don’t need to, people with more serious illnesses are also staying away. In my weekly discussions with Cwm Taf Health Board, medics are worried that people with cancer, possible heart attacks or strokes have stayed away either because they thought there would be no capacity to deal with them or because they are afraid of picking up the virus. Stringent safety precautions are in place at hospitals to prevent transmission and the NHS has not been overwhelmed by Covid 19 patients as a result of the success of the lockdown. So there is a simple message – the NHS is open for you. Please seek medical help if you need to. SUZY DAVIES MS Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

OUR UNSUNG HEROES I would like to thank all our volunteers who are helping those in need during this difficult and challenging time. Their incredible efforts from delivering essential groceries and medicines to simply phoning people for a chat, has made a huge difference to those who have been advised to shield. It has been lovely to get involved and to meet some of the volunteers and kitchen staff at the Talbot Community Centre in Kenfig Hill who are involved in providing lunches three days a week as a delivery only service for those who are eligible. Every Friday for the past couple of weeks, I have been delivering meals around Kenfig Hill, despite some people insisting that Derek Brockway has just delivered their chicken curry. The meals are subsidised by Pyle Community Council. I would also like to thank all those who are working tirelessly to look after the young children of key healthcare workers: The childminders, the private childcare providers and those in our Flying Start hubs. Their incredible efforts means that our key workers can continue to go to work. If you have any issues or need advice, please contact me at carwyn.jones@senedd.wales or call 07944 281 235. CORONAVIRUS

ADDICTION

IN DREAMS

In January coronavirus landed on our shore They told us to stay inside safe behind closed door, You can’t mingle with your friends or see your family, You can go out for a walk but only once daily.

An enemy is creeping Yes, stealthily seeking To bind us with chains forged with evil and spite But we’ll fear not his malice As with Samson a-sleeping No, we’ll fear not his chains But rise, escape from this plight. But, as spider his victim would bind ever closer See, the chains of our foe now heavier cling Wake up, man of God, beware of your danger That hinders your service to Christ who is king He surely will help you, break chains that would hinder Rise up now and fight for He victory will bring. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

I walk along the coast path, Inhale that fresh sea air. Embrace those gentle breezes As they tussle with my hair.

We can go out for our shopping but must obey the rules, Going outs like mountaineering you must take the right tools, 20 pairs of plastic gloves and a face mask if you can, All these things to save yourself and adhere to the ban. Then poor Prime Minister Boris caught it himself, The nation waited for the news to hear about his health. People losing loved ones, figure rising every day, Can we find a cure or vaccine I hope there is a way. Children being homeschooled learning in new ways, Parents do the best they can to help them fill the days. The NHS is looking after us but no one is immune, That’s why I hope they don’t send them to school to soon. There’s Captain Tom doing garden laps, And Thursday night NHS claps, We are all looking a bit like waifs, But while we stay at home we are safe. Sian Hamilton-Howell, Kenfig Hill

BRINK OF DEATH My tears are so heavy That my eyes have become swollen I believe I have already died Because my body is now frozen The poisoness vessel that produced me Doomed me from inside the womb A blend of vermin DNA Cut from her belly and sent to its tomb My last attempt was so very close “That was a fatal amount” he said With holes in my head and wires in my neck “You shouldn’t be here, you should be dead” Tuesday Turner, Brackla Bridgend

Email us your poem info@seaside news.co.uk WHEN THIS DARKNESS CLEARS When this darkness clears, From all our daily routines, I hope people still are civil to one another, Rather than going back and being mean. When we all are out from isolation and lockdown, From this time we’ve had to endure, In hope this virus is stopped worldwide, And the Pharmaceutical companies find a cure. This Coronavirus has affected everybody, No matter what country in which you live, We have all supported those we love, With as much as we can give. One day we will look behind us, And relive the horrors we went through, Until that day arrives again, Remember to tell them daily, I love you! David Boyce, Brackla Bridgend

Clear blue sky above me, Lifts the spirits high. The noontime sun caresses me, I feel like I could fly. I look down from the cliff top, At the beach and sea below. Those gentle waves could take me Where I might like to go. I dream of lakes and hillsides, Snow-capped mountains too. Of forests, fields and woodlands, Sparkling with dew. And, when the walk is over, I gently float back down. The memories linger with me, Until next time around. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

I AM EVERYWHERE My friend I will always be near you, I linger above the horizon, My friend I will never leave you, On me you can always rely on, My friend if ever you need me, Just call me and I will be there, Close your eyes so that you can see me, My friend I am everywhere. TIME No-one knows the meaning of life, Or when your time is up, But God gives us many moments, For us to fill our cup, It’s up to us to make things happen, Live each day like it’s your last, So make those magic moments, As time moves oh so fast… Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

Club features THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF PORTHCAWL Although we last met on 3rd March, we have not been idle. Members and their extended families have been putting their talents to work in support of the coronavirus effort. Our sewers have made over 30 scrub bags for the NHS, bakers have been busy making cakes, while others have donated supplies of fabric, flour and eggs. Neither have we forgotten our usual commitments. Chocolates were taken to the Victoria Avenue group home residents for Easter and those with a birthday still received their card and gift. Our incoming president M E Lewis was given 3 bags of chocolate from the cancelled International Conference in Belfast. She gave one bag to the group home and two to PP Carol’s daughter for those attending a new NHS mental heath ward she has opened in Maesteg. It May be many months before we are able to meet again, but we will continue to serve our local community as best we can. Liz Jones Club Sec

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES It was lovely to see the Rainbow pictures in people’s windows during the Lockdown. While they show everyone’s support to the NHS they are also a reminder of a famous promise of God in the bible. Noah faced his own ‘lockdown’ inside the Ark for up to a year, going through his own lockdown stages: first the rising waters, then the flooded earth, next the receding waters and then drying land (Genesis 6-9). When it was all over he could exit the Ark and enjoy a BBQ celebration! It was at this time God gave Noah and the whole human race the covenant sign of the Rainbow in the sky as an eternal promise: ‘never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood’ For Christians the Rainbow symbolises the faithful promises of God. It is a reminder that those who trust in God can depend on His promises to save us from the consequences of our sins. It is a promise that reaches its consummation in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Sooner or later the rainbow pictures will come down from our windows, but God’s promises stand forever. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH If you’re reading this devotional, I assume you are more or less in the ‘there is a God’ camp. But what about the ‘there is no God’ faction? Sometimes, an atheists disbelief has its roots in science. But more often, it stems from unpleasant interactions with believers, whether through personal experience, or through history. You know the sorts of things: the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the threats of Hell. Indeed, a study of non-churchgoers aged 16 to 29 found that 87% believe that Christians are judgmental. Since God relies on people to be God’s representatives on earth, you can hardly blame atheists if, having met only judgmental kinds, they decide that God isn’t worth their time. In fact, that’s a decidedly un-foolish response under the circumstances. What God needs, then, is a different kind of representative. One that won’t convert people away from God, but will invite them to love. A representative that lives a life of grace, welcome, invitation, love, and service. One who lives a life of adventure and tenderness. God needs representatives who are not fools. Representatives like you. God Bless Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

Legal advice ISSUES ARISING FROM COVID 19

THE DIVORCE PROCESS For many, being forced into lockdown has brought about a selection of problems - from mental health issues and childcare concerns to an increase in marital or relationship problems. Sadly, many people have been left feeling they wish to divorce or separate from their spouse/partner. It is possible to start a divorce during lockdown, or at least receive advice for your own peace of mind and protection. We can discuss matters with you confidentially and at a time that is convenient to you, to ensure your privacy. Whilst you may not feel it is the ‘right time’ to begin dividing assets or discussing living arrangements, it may help to explore your options, to understand what is involved in the process and decide whether you wish to use a solicitor or try to manage the divorce process yourself. It may also be beneficial to understand what other agencies and organisations are available to assist you and your Children, especially if you are concerned about your safety. When a couple divorce, three different issues may need to be resolved: • the divorce itself - ie bringing the marriage to an end; • agreeing a financial settlement; • sorting out childcare arrangements, including where children will live, contact arrangements and any child maintenance payments. These three different aspects of divorce do not necessarily have to be dealt with at the same time. Often couples will prioritise the above based on their needs. All Court proceedings relating to divorce, including financial or childcare issues, are dealt with by the Family Court. The Family Court has several regional divorce centres around the country and remain open during Covid-19 to deal with divorce petitions and applications. They also have the ability of dealing with urgent applications if required. Whilst you can reduce the costs, time and confrontation by agreeing as much as possible between yourselves, this may cause difficulties at home at present so we would advise you to carefully consider whether you seek advice before entering in to those discussions. If you remain amicable and are able to discuss matters with your spouse/ partner then we would always advise you to seek legal advice on any agreements reached to ensure it is fair for both parties, that all assets have been considered, children needs are met as well as both parties and that financial ties will be properly severed. Should you wish to discuss this further please contact us. The Covid 19 Pandemic has caused huge changes to society. Everyone has had to adjust the pattern of their daily working lives and recalibrate their leisure time. But the extreme measures put in place have created unequal levels of hardship. Among those notably affected are divorced and separated couples. For some of them the impact has not only been financial, but also personal, and often both. The cessation of many businesses and the knock-on effect of reduced incomes and depressed asset values across different sectors has had a detrimental effect on the financial circumstances of many individuals, who still have maintenance and capital obligations following their divorce. As a result, people are unable to meet financial obligations and many existing divorce arrangements will need to be subjected to renegotiation. In addition, there is talk of the number of divorce proceedings starting to rise as we emerge from quarantine. According to mainstream media, law firms in the UK are ‘bracing themselves’ for a lockdown-fuelled surge in divorce rates. This always happens, these stories have argued, when people are forced to remain together in a pressure cooker environment, such as over the Christmas holiday period. There are further virus-related repercussions for separated couples. Arrangements for children – so often a battleground between separated couples – has been a particularly acute issue because freedom of movement has been so restricted. Initially we were told that children should remain in their primary residence, but then this advice was tempered to allow children to travel between parents’ houses. However, in some cases this has caused an increase in animosity between parents as one parent may use the lockdown to prevent contact unreasonably in the eyes of the other parent. It seems that the most important question for those contemplating divorce or children proceedings right now is when should they start the process? Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Business & finance A TALE OF TWO FRIENDS

COULD EQUITY RELEASE SUPPLEMENT A REDUCTION IN PENSION INCOME?

Jean and Kaye are great friends and have been since school days. They live close to each other and are both married to husbands they’ve been with for over 40 years. Today is a sad day though and Jean is devastated following the phone call she received from Kaye before breakfast this morning. Kaye awoke to find her husband Phil very unwell and unable to get out of bed or talk. Phil had suffered a stroke during an hour or two, she thinks, before she got up and now all panic set in and Jean was Kaye’s first port of call. Now, a great number of people suffer strokes in the UK annually, yet in many cases they are simply not prepared to deal with it. Yes of course, it’s the number of things that have to be attended to which you had taken for granted, which now have to be done by someone else and possibly on a permanent basis. Yet there’s also the problem of dealing with the practicalities of life, especially where finances and other arrangements are concerned. That’s where holding Lasting Power of Attorney comes in and makes life so much easier that it would otherwise be. We all know people who’ve held Power of Attorney for others; in fact many of us already do so. However many of us don’t and that’s just the start of difficulties. Jean and her husband Rich got theirs sorted a couple of years ago and Kaye and Phil had often talked about getting theirs done two – only to leave it all too late. We often get clients asking about making the necessary arrangements and we are happy to get this done on their behalf, and complement the arrangements with an up-to-date Will where necessary as part of a proper, sensible review of later life needs. The needs of the over 50s section of society are very different from those of much younger generations and our experience in this area of advice extends back over 30 years. To have a very informal discussion with us about how we may assist you with such arrangements please give us a call on 01656 782545 / 07768 418308, between 9am and 9pm, even at weekends. We can make arrangements remotely during these difficult days of social distancing and when we get the all clear appointments will again be available at your place or ours. So, make that call and we’ll help you get it sorted!

The coronavirus and the lockdown issued by the government have had many knock-on effects but probably the biggest area hit has been incomes. With many businesses being forced to close their doors temporarily their profits have drastically reduced which has meant that shareholder dividend payments have suddenly stopped. The halt in these dividend payments is now proving to be a serious concern for some retired individuals who utilise these dividends to act as crucial pension income. And although the government has tried to support as many of those whose jobs and incomes have been affected the retired population have no such backup. An option to supplement this loss of pension income is to release a percentage of the equity in your home using a lifetime mortgage scheme. Nowadays, lifetime mortgages are very flexible and offer extremely competitive interest rates which can be as low as 2.44% fixed for life. They also offer you a few options on how you release your tax free money, so you can either take a lump sum and then potentially some further drawdowns as and when required or just take a monthly drawdown from the outset to help cover any pension shortfalls. The two key criteria required to release equity is that you own your own home and that you are over 55. Please remember that if you are in receipt of means-tested state benefits, releasing equity may affect your entitlement. Fortunately, there is a range of options available to help you manage the impact of a lifetime mortgage. It is essential that you seek professional advice to find the best option to suit your needs which is where we can help. If you are considering equity release give Abacus Assurance Financial Services Ltd a call on 01656 772222 and book your free telephone consultation. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

Our Club remains closed in line present Welsh Government advice and we are all very much missing the company of our fellow members. Our Plant Team has done a wonderful job of getting plants to our members by doorstep delivery ready for the new growing season. We have also managed to arrange a new Click & Collect Service for our members. They submit either online or by phone, their requirements from our Club Shop and our team, equipped with PPE load their order into boots of cars without contact. I am hoping we will see photographic evidence later this year of beautiful flowerbeds, hanging baskets and veg plots. No one can say this year that they have been too busy to tend their plots, for most of us time is in plentiful. We are installing tomatoes into greenhouses, cucumbers, and peppers too. Bedding plants are being planted, watered and cherished with the promise of colour and beauty throughout the summer months. Never has it been so important to make our gardens productive and beautiful. The work involved to get the results we crave ensures we take exercise and is a therapeutic tool to aid our mental wellbeing. Happy Gardening! Stay in touch on our Facebook page, just look for Laleston Gardening Club. Susan Ford

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB “June, the month of leaves and roses, when pleasant sights salute the eyes and pleasant smells the noses” (Nathaniel Parker) The longest day of the year falls on 21st June, bringing warmer temperatures and extra sunlight (and extra weeds!) It’s excellent exercise watering this time of year, remember, 90% of plants that fail in their first year is due to lack of water, so it’s good for you and your plants! Lawns should be cut twice a week now (Yeah not my job) mow in a different direction each time, if you keep mowing the same way the grass will grow in that direction and the mower blades won’t cut it (grass is very sneaky!) Lavender – simply the best, few plants give as much flowering, colour, scent and hassle free behaviour, looks fabulous towards the end of summer and great all next summer too, love it! Did you know you can use polystyrene in your containers, break into large pieces and fill the bottom third of the tub, this provides excellent drainage and saves on the quantity of compost you use, what a good way to get rid of all that packing around the goods you ordered online during lockdown! Arts & music STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

It’s difficult to know what to write about. I see that a lot of bands, which had cancelled their tours that were due to take place before the lockdown are rearranging dates for December, but I think it’s being optimistic. I also notice that tickets are now on sale for Planet Rockstock 2020, which takes place at Trecco Bay, Porthcawl in the first week of December. Normally I would be getting excited, waiting for the line-up to be announced, but again, is it going to happen? If and when we get out of this current situation I fear the entertainment world will be the last to get the green light. Moving on, I’d like to wish Phil Jones from the Sex rock band a speedy recovery, and also former Shakin’ Stevens bassist Mal Preest who has been ill. Mal played on my 80s single “Ain’t No Fun On The Dole” and is currently playing with the Luke Doherty Band. If you have any music news, keep it coming on the bat phone! In the meantime, stay safe and keep clapping at 8.00pm every Thursday for all our key workers. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag Marks

Waiting list now open for when we can reopen

In last month’s Seaside News I mentioned that since film production had been brought to an abrupt halt by emergency restrictions introduced because of the coronavirus pandemic, I had decided to put the enforced spare time to some constructive use by getting out the workbench – apparently DIY has become very popular again lately! A couple of years ago I decided to make a wooden postbox to go by the front door; the main pieces were duly measured and marked on a piece of softwood board and cut to size but that was as far as it got. With no excuse now not to finish it, out came the router to cut some housing joints and gradually, in the sunshine on my drive, the wooden box took shape. With many shops closed, I had to order two small brass hinges and wall fixings on the internet, but fortunately Chris at The Paint Shop on Station Hill was able to supply me with bright red gloss paint and Alan and Jayne’s Supervalue in John Street sold me the little wooden doorknob. Hopefully the finished result will be a pleasant surprise for our postman! Anthony Hontoir 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir with postbox

Sport reports LIFESAVING FROM A DISTANCE The activities of Pen y Bont SLSC, like most things these past weeks, have been put on hold amidst the pandemic. Naturally, with swimming pools, the sea, gatherings and travel being off limits, very little of our day-to-day training and preparation for the summer season of competing and lifeguarding can happen. We also, as a club, don’t want to promote any breaches of government guidelines. It is uncertain when we will be able to train, compete or patrol again. Morale within Pen y Bont SLSC, however, hasn’t dropped whilst staying at home and protecting the NHS. The nippers have been participating in fun virtual training sessions organized by the coaches; they have also joined in with clubs from all across South Wales to create a beautiful photo tribute to the frontline workers, where the colours from all the clubs create a rainbow. There have also been lots of great videos of club members training in paddling pools (made static by ropes tied to the outside), doing fitness challenges for fundraisers and keeping fit by running. We’re keeping fit so that, when the time is right, we can get back on the water and sand and do what we do best. For now, we just want to promote the stay safe message and do our part from our homes.
