MORE DUCKLINGS

BLIND CYCLE CHALLENGE FOR GUIDE DOG OWNER

Dear Editor, I was unaware my mallard duck had nested under the fir trees until today when she appeared with 13 ducklings on my pond. She has now taken them back to the nest . Park Slip has advised me to let nature take its course rather than gather them up and drive them down to the wilderness lake. Julie Smith, Porthcawl

NAME OF THE NEW SURGERY Dear Editor, It is surprising how many people have expressed their opinions on the name for the new surgery in Newton such as Lakeside Surgery, Lakeview, Riverside, Meadow Vale and even plain Newton Surgery. Since most people of Porthcawl will be attending this important building during their lifetime, it would be interesting to have readers’ suggestions for a name for their surgery that would be significant and appropriate to correspond to their usage or siting. Needless to say, the final decision on a name will be made by the ‘powers that be’. John Jenkins, Porthcawl

WOMBAT POEM Dear Editor, I wanted to compliment the writer of the ‘Wombat’ poem who is Bob Davies, North Cornelly in the May edition of the Seaside News. It is amusing, catchy and a pleasure to read. It really brought a smile to my face. Well worth submitting to a competition! Well done Bob Davies. S Brown

Dear Editor, A blind cyclist from Corntown is taking on a marathon challenge this August. Keith Barrett, a member of the Ogmore Valley Wheelers club, is in training for a sponsored tandem ride from Land’s End in Cornwall to John o’Groats in Scotland. The journey, to raise money for Guide Dogs Cymru, will take nine days and cover nearly 1,000 miles, including steep hills and winding lanes. Fellow cyclist David Walters will pilot the tandem, acting as Keith’s eyes and lending extra leg power. Keith, the owner of guide dog Lena, said: “Being blind means I’ve faced many challenges in my life, and this cycle ride is one of the biggest! Guide Dogs changed my life, and now it’s time for me to give something back. We’ve been training hard and we’re looking forward to the challenge.” David, a product engineer at Spectrum Communications in Bridgend, said: “Guide Dogs is such a good cause, and it’s great to see Keith get out and enjoy himself. “I’ve been cycling all my life, but this is the ride every cyclist wants to do. Keith is really stubborn, but in a good way. He will not give up.” You can sponsor the pair at justgiving.com/fundraising/ tandemlejog2018 Picture: Keith Barrett and David Walters in training for their tandem ride

Is your conservatory too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter? A solid tiled conservatory roof regulates heat better than the usual UPVC roof panels on most conservatories as they are better insulated.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service

is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Stormy Down, North Cornelly, South Cornelly, Kenfig, Mawdlam, Margam Village, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribwr, Pen-y-Fai, Laleston, Broadlands,

Whiterock, Brackla, Coity, Bryntirion & Bridgend town centre and Welsh business owner Phil Powell agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

meeting houses in the village; a population of approximately, 200. Eventually, in 1788, the first Baptist/Unitarian Chapel was built in Nottage. Newton, had largely, remained loyal to the established church at St John’s; yet, in 1828, Hope, an Independent Chapel opened on Newton Nottage Road. In the 19th century as the town of Porthcawl developed, the influx of workers, tradesmen, and their families influenced other denominations to establish chapels along South Road. As the years progressed chapels were built in the town. The latest building was that of ‘Noddfa’ Welsh Baptist Church, in Philadelphia Road, which opened in 1940.

FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS Henry VIII ended Papal rule in this country and established the Church of England. Yet, under Oliver Cromwell, religious practices in this country further changed. Not only did the Puritan cause increase but it developed into other dissenting or non-conformist religious denominations. Following the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, an attempt was made to reintroduce the doctrines of the established church. As a result, nonconformists met in secret. One such meeting house was that of Richard Cradock’s house, in Moor Lane, Nottage. As a consequence, Nottage, became a centre of non-conformity. Baptists, Independents, Presbyterians and Methodists, all had

School reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

The beauty of being a coastal school is it’s never far to walk to the beach! What better place than the glorious Glamorgan Heritage Coast for St Clare’s students setting off on their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition? Y11 and Y13 students are on study leave, so we wish them good luck with their GCSEs and A-Levels. Our Sixth Form boasts 100% pass rate at A-Level since 2014 and offers students the individual attention they need to reach their full potential. If you are in Year 11, or have a family member who is, we’d love to hear from you and show you around. Life at St Clare’s is as busy as ever, with all the clubs and sports fixtures happening every week. Summer term means athletics and tennis, with Y-ball also returning as an after-school activity. Dig our your picnic blanket and come to our Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Friday, 15th June or our next Open Morning on Wednesday, 20th June? Tour our glorious grounds and find out what a difference a St Clare’s education can make for your child. Telephone Admissions on (01656) 789966 to book a place or have an informal chat. Visit our website www.stclares-school. co.uk now! Helen Hier, Head Teacher Picture caption: St Clare’s Y4 pupils re-enact the Battle of Hastings

AFON Y FELIN NEWS We have so much to celebrate here at Afon y Felin. Emelia White and Chantelle Dewson came first in the Cluster Reading Challenge at Pyle Life Centre, they received prizes and a trophy for our cabinet. Lewis Stephens learned his tables so well, that not only did he top the school leader board in the Times Table Blast, he topped the world leader board as well! Ex pupil, Skarlette McArthur has passed her entrance exams for Marlborough College in Wiltshire, we are so proud! Zoo Lab visited our Foundation Phase pupils, bringing with them some quite scary specimens, a tarantula, millipede, a lizard amongst them, they are fascinating creatures close up, lots of children held or stroked them! Year 5 welcomed Ysgol Ferch O’r Sger, forming an alliance to aid learning welsh as a second language. The RNLI came in to teach about beach safety, we played host to the NSPCC, who held an interactive assembly, Carwyn Jones made time in his busy schedule to visit our School Council and Mrs Grist opened our new lending library, twenty five parents attended on the first day to help their children choose books. Congratulations Class Holly, winning the attendance cup for a month! AJ Pritchard - Parent Governor

WELSH HERITAGE TRIPS

Due to bad weather in March our St. David’s Day trips were unfortunately cancelled. However, on Thursday 26th April we were finally able to go on our trips. The Foundation Phase children set off for an enjoyable and educational day at Gower Heritage Centre. The day was timetabled with a range of exciting activities, focusing on Welsh heritage. The children enjoyed a guided tour of the watermill, learning about the history of the centre and witnessing how corn is ground into flour. A memorable experience for the children was stepping back in time into a medieval kitchen. They learnt all about the types of foods and drinks consumed during these times and were able to ask many questions about the foods on display. They enjoyed following a medieval recipe and all were fully immersed in the pottage tasting session. Pupils in Key Stage 2 enjoyed an action packed day out at The Big Pit. They braved the underground for an hour-long tour of the coalmine and took a step back in time to learn about Wales during the Industrial Revolution. They had a fantastic experience looking at the exhibitions in the museum and in the simulation area. N Pryce Head Teacher

school reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL CYNFFIG NEWS

Whilst most pupils are still in the throes of external examinations here at Porthcawl Comprehensive, Stephen Davies of Year 13 has already had his Design and Technology ‘A’ Level piece nominated for an award by the visiting moderator. Stephen’s meticulously detailed design of a prosthetic arm, to enable injured servicemen to kitesurf, impressed the WJEC examiner so much that he nominated it for a Student Innovation Award. Other particularly striking pieces were Nathan Jones’ dragon fire pit and Molly Ashton of Year 12’s stained glass window, depicting the lifeboat, designed with the new maritime centre in mind. Our transition programme is also in full swing at this time of year when we welcome Year 6 pupils from surrounding primary schools to the main Transition Day on 21 June. In addition to this, the Music Department is also holding a transition event, culminating in an evening concert on 14 June, to which parents are warmly invited. Alongside these events, our “Helping Hands” programme also continues to run, boosting the confidence of children who are slightly more anxious about starting at the Comprehensive. Good luck to all pupils sitting examinations and for our latest news, visit our website on www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL – NORA HARDY Nora is a 17-year-old pupil currently studying at Bryntirion Comprehensive School. She is an exceptional student who has contributed greatly to the wider community to help and inspire others. Nora has recently won the High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan Youth Community Award in recognition of her huge contribution to charity and own personal life journey. Upon receiving the award Nora has also gained a special invite to the Royal Wedding of HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle. As a school, we congratulate Nora on her achievements and wish her every success in the future. 24 | seaside news

Congratulations to Year 10 and 12 GCSE PE pupils who competed in the County Athletics Championships held in Brecon on 1st May. All pupils performed extremely well in their respective events. A special mention to Amy-Lea Christian who came second in Middle Girls High Jump and Cai Spence who came 3rd in Middle Boys 800m, both pupils will now be reserves for the Welsh Schools Championship. I am extremely proud of pupils Eloise Abraham-Jones, Shauna Lewis, Nia Lloyd and Olivia Davies who after learning of the charity ‘Latch’ took the initiative to support it. The girls became aware of the Emyr Owen branch of Latch from research they undertook in their Welsh Bac lessons and decided to contact Latch about how they could help. They then set about organising an event, which raised a remarkable £545.00 to support children undergoing chemotherapy; a fantastic achievement. This term our Eco Club joined Matthew Bunt from ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ to clean up our local area. As part of the national, ‘Litterless’ project, pupils made quite an impact and collected 10 bags of rubbish in total. Pupils will now be targeting other problem areas in our locality to keep Cynffig ‘Litterless’ @ CynffigEco. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

CORNELI PRIMARY SCHOOL Meeting famous people can be a daunting experience but preconceived images of an important serious man surrounded by bodyguards, held by our School Councillors, were rapidly dispelled on meeting Carwyn Jones, local Assembly Member and First Minister, though he was taller than they expected! The meeting for the combined School Councils of Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sger, Afon y Felin and Corneli was initially arranged by Cllr Jeff Tildsley to discuss local issues. However, due to Carwyn Jones’ superb engagement with the children it became an opportunity for them to hear about his career and how it is possible for a ‘local boy’ such as himself to make great achievements. Our budding politicians were clearly inspired, asking him relevant and probing questions, which he answered in a friendly and often humorous way. The children thoroughly enjoyed meeting Carwyn Jones and we are grateful to him for making the time to come. As we seek to develop the aspirations of all our children such positive experiences are invaluable. Consequently, next on the agenda for the School Councils are meetings with the Chief Constable and the Director of Education, they certainly believe in going straight to the top! Sue Jones

The Engineering Education Scheme offers pupils the opportunity to work in conjunction with a local company on an STEM based project. This year some of our year 12 pupils worked with SAS International. There were two teams: the ‘Energy Recovery’ and the ‘Patination’ team. They worked for many hours on top of their studies to produce innovative solutions to the problems set. Having written extensive project reports, the teams then travelled to Parc Y Scarlets, Llanelli on 19th April to present the projects to the competition judges alongside 75 other school and college groups. This was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to explain their ideas and solutions to others and to see what other projects all the other schools have been working on, as well as putting themselves forward for some of the 12 awards on offer. Both teams impressed the judges with their projects, with the Energy Recovery team being nominated for two awards, ‘The Best Application of Engineering and Technology’ and the ‘Most Innovative Solution to the Problem’. The Patination team was also nominated, and won the award for the ‘Best use of Chemical Engineering’. For this the team won a prize of £500. J L Davies

FALLING

You walked into my life with a snowdrop smile and forget-me-not eyes. I was stood on the edge of a cliff; you took me by the hand, stroked the lines of it with your thumb, and sent a spark running through my blood. And your arms were snakes around me, pressing our faces close together; you smiled at me, and I fell. But you fell too, so I closed my eyes and held my breath. The tide pushed air from my lungs to replace it with water, and you, you, my siren, kissed me and I knew life. we washed ashore with sand in our hair and stars in our eyes and I no longer needed air. Only you. We exchanged kisses like currency, I would happily pay every fortune to keep you by my side forever. I was consumed by thoughts of roses and lilies, and you let me braid these dreams into your hair as you lay in the grass, and wished for magic. When I was done you stood in my arms, and tossed the pennies of my fantasies into the rolling waves. Elisabeth Jeffreys

GUNS & KNIVES

Many teenagers go around in groups And often join a gang They think it’s cool to carry guns That can take a life in just one bang They think they are hard And also very clever But to use a gun on someone else Will change their lives forever Some people will not use a gun But instead they have a knife And again it takes one stupid move To take somebody’s life Please put away your weapons And lock the guns away To make our streets much safer So young kids can grow and play David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

TOENAILS

1. O you can’t cut your toenails with your socks on And you can’t sing a trio all alone. No, you can’t drive a car without an engine And you can’t get to Heaven on your own. 2. O you can’t wash your trousers without water, And you can’t lift a rhino all alone. No, you can’t milk a camel with a spanner And you can’t get to Heaven on your own. Chorus: You need Jesus, we all need Jesus, He’s the One who took the blame upon Himself. You need Jesus, we all need Jesus, ’Cos you can’t get to Heaven by yourself. Bob Davies, North Cornelly

IN FRONT OF CONEY BEACH

We sit on the golden sand, The fire burns, 280 orange jumpers crowd the Beach. We run around Playing Tag, Exploring the Beach. Cheer now and then When someone is awarded A handsome trophy I am proud to be among The one and only Sker and Pink Bay Team. We have awesome coaches, Fast swimmers and runners We are Sker and Pink Bay. Daniel R. Whittaker, Porthcawl

THE WAVE

They flock here in their thousands. Just to come and see, That thing we take for granted. The great, forbidding sea. They stand out on the pier, Waiting for a spray. It’s the monsters that they’re longing for. Just to make their day. With babes in arms I’ve seen them. Those people, Oh so brave. Not really though, just stupid. As they’re taken by the wave. It was with joy you stepped into life, The youngest of siblings so tall Till along came big sister’s family While you were still at school How spoiled was I by my schoolgirl aunt Donkey rides, bumper cars, such fun And growing now to maturity An example to us, still so young Surviving the traumatic years of war Hansom Barry now by your side With blessing of family are challenges too So new gifts now come to abide Green fingered together your garden grows New skills in making a home And your faith is well grown in a Saviour above And you’re learning to shepherd God’s own Dear Aunt, we’ve seen you, once so strong, Your role as the carer is done But in all you have blessed us, enriching our lives ‘til now God has called you safe home And we miss you, dear Aunt, so fragrant your life And thank God for all you have done And though we must mourn, for you leave a great gap In heaven, you’ve received God’s ‘Well done.’ Pauline Lewis

ONE DAY THE HERO CAME To the end I ride, To life as it glides, The path I choose The story I tell From the beginning to the final chapter, There have been times of woe And there have been times of envy And to count the times of joy No man could find a higher number, Songs have been sang Of hero and son, Countless tales and endless rhyme While sleepy heads lay all quiet and still, The rush of simmer down Dropping of eyelid Quiet and gone, Little man, little lady Rest now for another day comes And for those whom are to suffer in silence There will be a day when the hero will come Until that day... Keep going... keep dreaming... keep wishing For one day a hero Will stand for your NAME. Stephen Richards, Bridgend

ABMU health board Free support to help you stub out your smoking habit for good “We start them off with a weekly consultation with one of our trained staff for five weeks and then a fortnightly one for the rest of the time, but people could come in every day if that’s what they need to stop smoking. “It helps the surgeries massively as well as people don’t need to take up their doctor’s time to get help.”

A free stop smoking service at local pharmacies is helping smokers give up the habit for good. It is being offered because people who try to give up smoking by themselves are four times more likely to fail. They are also likely to be a lot worse off with the high price of nicotine patches, inhalers and gums. Those things come free, however, for anyone joining the smoking cessation scheme at a pharmacy.

Zoe Thomas, 24

Debra Hughes, manager of Lloyds Pharmacy in Baglan Moors. Not only that, but smokers get all the support they need from trained staff to see it through to success. Lloyds Pharmacy in Baglan Moors is one of 84 pharmacies currently running the scheme across the ABMU Health Board region. With the number of smokers in Neath Port Talbot being the highest in Wales at 25 per cent, it’s a much needed service. People don’t need a doctor’s referral to join the stop smoking programme; they can just turn up at their local participating pharmacy. “When people come in for a chat we usually ask them to take away a questionnaire to fill in and then bring back. The reason we do that is because we have found that if people sign up on impulse, they are much less likely to succeed,” said pharmacy manager Debra Hughes. “If they come back or if people come in and they have really made up their minds to stop, we put them on a 12 week programme.” Participants are given weekly supplies of the nicotine substitute they think is most likely to help them and have regular sessions with a trained counsellor. “The sessions are one-to-one and completely private,” said Debra.

Zoe Thomas, 24 above, having her carbon monoxide levels checked is one of three colleagues at the pharmacy who have given up smoking using the scheme. “I started smoking when I was 14 because I thought it was cool. It was the worst decision of my life - and the most expensive,” she said. “I tried quitting a couple of times before but I always went back. This time it hasn’t fazed me at all. I can stand in a group of six people smoking and not be tempted. “I found it hard at the start but the support I’ve had has been brilliant. Using a nicotine inhaler helped me because I missed the act of smoking, but I gave that up too after 10 weeks. “What I have learned is that the craving is there for a split second but once you get over that, it’s gone. I was spending £35 to £40 a week on cigarettes so I have definitely noticed a difference in my finances as well as my breathing.” Zoe and the other staff at the pharmacy are keen to get the message across to smokers in the local community who may be able to give up the habit with the right support. Joanne Larkman, one of staff members trained to counsel smokers under the scheme finds that being an ex-smoker herself helps. “I know what they are going through and they know that if they have a relapse early on, I am not here to give them a row!”

CASE STUDY Nicola Clarke, 47

The smokers’ commitment is tested at every consultation, however, with a carbon monoxide test that will show up if they have lapsed but also show how their health is improving as levels go down. “That can be a great motivator. I always emphasise the positive and I remind them why they wanted to give up smoking in the first place,” said Joanne. “I know how much better they are going to feel when they succeed. You can breathe better, smell better and taste better after you give up smoking.” All four of Lloyds’ Port Talbot pharmacies are running the scheme and across the health board area there are 84 pharmacies offering the service and this will rise to 100 by April. Steve Ridd, Lloyds’ Welsh business development manager, said: “Nearly 70 per cent of smokers want to stop smoking. Of those, 41 per cent are trying, but only 2.9% of those are in a scheme like this one. “We hope more people take it up because we know this scheme works. Smoking still remains the single largest cause of preventable ill-health in Wales. That’s why the Welsh Government has set a target of reducing smoking from 20 per cent of the population to 16 per cent by 2020.” In Lloyds’ Baglan Moors pharmacy, the number of people signing up to do the programme has seen an increase since the pharmacy extended its opening hours – 8.30am-10.30pm Monday to Friday, 9am-9pm Saturday and 11am-1pm Sunday. The health board is commissioning other pharmacies to open on Sundays and extend their hours generally so that patients always have access to medicines, services and advice. Before April last year only two pharmacies were commissioned to open on a Sunday but now there are 10. “It is getting busier as people realise that we are open longer,” said Zoe. “People can walk in here late at night or at the weekend and ask for help in stopping smoking. It really helps people who are working full time.” • The Smoking Cessation Scheme is currently offered by 84 pharmacies across Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend. It is one of three services on offer in Wales that can help smokers wanting to quit. Stop Smoking Wales runs community-based sessions with group therapy, while the Time to Quit scheme helps hospital inpatients give up the habit. They all come under the umbrella of Help Me Quit and you can find out more about which service would suit you best by checking out www.helpmequit.wales or ringing 0800 0852219. Find out if your local pharmacy is offering the service by visiting this link and entering your postcode. http://www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/LocalServices/?s=Pharmacy

Nicola Clarke, 47, (left) signed up for the free stop smoking service at Glynneath Pharmacy on High Street, Glynneath, last year. “I smoked for 32 years and had a heart attack when I was 40 and I was told to stop then, but I carried on. “It wasn’t until recently when I came into the pharmacy and Nik, the pharmacist, told me there was a scheme that I decided to have a go,” she said. “My carbon monoxide levels were off the scale when I was first tested but after not smoking for two days, they plummeted. It showed me what I could achieve and after that I couldn’t wait to come back every week and blow into the machine! “Me and my daughter did it together, which helped. I always felt embarrassed about smoking and I had brown fingers from rolling my own but Nik was so supportive and nonjudgmental. “The first two weeks weren’t easy but I promised my family I would be smoke-free and patch-free by Christmas Day, and I was. Now food tastes amazing and I’ve bought loads of cook books!” Pharmacist Nik Watts (right) said: “There is a high prevalence of smoking in the area and we’ve usually got 20 people on the scheme at any one time. “We do everything we can to support them in giving up. It’s has been very successful and I’m pleased to say we’ve had a lot of quitters.”

BANKS DESERT HIGH STREETS

Over the next few weeks residents will start to see work accelerate around Cosy Corner in preparation for commencement of construction of the Maritime Centre. Five years work is now bearing visible fruit. The funding package for the entire project was secured in January 2017 and is running to plan. Conditions imposed as part of planning approval and granting of the land lease will soon be completed. These include providing: shower and toilet block for use by the Harbour staff and berth holders, fit out and equipping a temporary Harbourmaster’s office at the rear of The Jennings building and purchasing the existing Harbourmaster portacabin. The temporary building behind the RNLI station will double up as an interim home for the Sea Cadets and an exhibition centre keeping people informed about the development as it progresses. The crane will soon be operational as we demolish the condemned Sea Cadets unit and take occupation of a newly acquired storage and boat repair yard in Porthcawl. ‘Harbourside’ has always been about more than a Maritime Centre. The old ‘fish bait building’ overlooking the harbour has now been acquired for conversion to a new ‘Porthcawl Information Centre’. Mike Clarke

MAY saw the closure of the NatWest branch in Porthcawl. This is one of a wave of bank closure to hit local communities as each of the big banks take it in turns to reduce their branch network. Some towns have lost their last bank leaving customers to either travel to their nearest branch or go online. But many people are unwilling or unable to take up internet banking and their needs must be met. Although banks make decisions in the interests of their shareholders rather than the community, they cannot simply shake off any obligations they have to their customers. I am hoping that it may be possible to reinstate a voluntary agreement between big banks, which said that if a bank found itself operating the last branch in any community, then the branch would be retained. Surely, they could get together to ensure joint funding to provide this safety net for our communities? I will be raising this with UK Government, which, I know, shares my concerns about the decline in high street banks and also the decline in the viability of the high streets as a result of bank closures.

DON’T BLIGHT OUR BEACHES WITH RUBBISH The May bank holiday weekend saw record numbers of people travelling to the coast to have fun and enjoy the good weather. Unfortunately, it also saw ridiculous amounts of rubbish left behind on many UK beaches. In Porthcawl, council staff worked hard throughout the bank holiday weekend to make sure that all 220 bins in the area were emptied regularly, including the new ones that were recently installed in partnership with Porthcawl Town Council. Despite heavy traffic congestion making it harder to get around, our staff took away seven lorry loads of rubbish in just one day. Unfortunately, every time the bins filled up again, some people chose to pile their waste around them or just dump it on the beach. This clearly isn’t acceptable. Our staff do everything they can, but it’s still a big area to cover and they cannot be everywhere at once, especially when traffic is heavy. We need more people to take greater responsibility for their own rubbish, and to either find a bin that isn’t full, or take their waste home and dispose of it there. Rubbish is everybody’s responsibility, and we all have a part to play in keeping the county borough clean. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

MEN’S SHEDS Last month it was a pleasure to visit The Squirrel’s Nest Men’s Shed Tondu with my Labour colleague Huw Irranca-Davies AM. The Squirrel’s Nest, which is based at the Tondu Enterprise Centre, is a place where men can come and spend time making items out of wood. Men’s Sheds is a new way for men to follow their interests or to take up new ones, to belong to a unique group and to feel useful. In Wales, the Men’s Sheds movement continues to grow and there are just under 40 Men’s Sheds. It was great to have a tour of the workshop, to see the tools and workstations and to chat to members. It was really interesting to hear from members about their own experiences and to hear about the great atmosphere, fun and camaraderie that occurs at the Squirrel’s Nest. The group are a great inspiration to others so much so that they are now the ‘go-to shed’ for others who are thinking of setting up their own Men’s Shed. At the workshop the members make things such as carts, chairs, Toy boxes and benches. Many of the items they make are for sale.

MAJOR INVESTMENT TO SUPPORT NEW BUSINESSES

NEW WEBSITE MAKES IT EASIER TO ACCESS COUNCIL SERVICES

The number of new enterprises setting up in Bridgend County Borough is increasing at a quicker rate than for Wales as a whole, creating a situation where there are very few available business premises to rent for smaller companies. So, we’re thrilled to be developing a £5.5m Enterprise Hub Programme with the Welsh Government to create 1,800 square metres of new business units at Brocastle, three new light industrial blocks at the Village Farm Industrial Estate in Pyle, and refurbish the Innovation Centre at the Bridgend Science Park. This would represent our largest single programme of business property development, providing high quality premises for 58 micro to medium enterprises, and supporting around 150 jobs. We’re currently in negotiations with Welsh Government and the Welsh European Funding Office in relation to the funding package for the programme. Meanwhile, our annual search for the finest local businesses is underway following the launch of the Bridgend Business Forum Awards 2018. The awards encourage businesses to shine a light on their success by putting themselves forward in nine different award categories with the overall aim of being named ‘Bridgend Business of the Year’. Full details and application forms can be found at www.bridgendbusinessforum.co.uk

Have you checked out Bridgend County Borough Council’s allnew website and My Account facility yet? Developed following consultation in which 87 per cent of people said they wanted better, faster and more interactive online council services, our new website is changing the way in which local residents are contacting and doing business with the council. The ‘My Account’ feature lets you log in to view your council tax bill, apply for housing benefit, request discounts and exemptions, make an online payment, set up and manage direct debits, help the council save money by opting for e-billing and much more. To register with My Account, all you need is an email address. We’ll be expanding My Account so that in time you will be able to use it to do things like report potholes for repair, apply for places at local schools, pay for school meals or let the authority know about faulty streetlights. The website has been designed to be fully accessible and user-friendly, featuring an improved layout and search facility which makes it easier to find the information you need. Take a look at www.bridgend.gov.uk and give us your feedback so that we can keep improving the new website.

PLASTIC IS A PROBLEM The amount of waste plastic is overwhelming both our landfill and our oceans. Ten years ago there was barely any recognition of a potential problem. Today, in part, thanks to programmes such as Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet 2, the issue is becoming imbedded in the public consciousness. The Queen has banned plastic bottles and straws from the Royal estates and there have been calls in Parliament to end the use of disposable cups. These efforts feel like a drop in the ocean when we consider that marine litter has increased by 10% from 2016 – 2017 and on average 718 pieces of litter are found for every 100m of beaches surveyed, 70% of which is plastic. Plastic pollution has even been found in the Polar Regions. The statistics feel overwhelming, but we can make a difference as a local community. We can look at providing free water refills and when we are out for a stroll or walking the dog, we can carry a bag in which to place beach litter. That way our local beaches will be cleaner, and the world will be one small step closer to cutting sea bourn plastics. MADELEINE MOON MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

Local news PORTHCAWL RNLI VOLUNTEER AT WINDSOR CASTLE FOR THE ROYAL WEDDING Helmsman Chris Page received a very special invitation. He was one of 1200 public guests at the wedding of the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle. Lifeboat operations manager Phil Missen said, “It is a great honour to have one of our crew members representing Porthcawl RNLI at Windsor Castle. Chris has been an exceptional volunteer and dedicated many hours for the benefit of our charity. Besides his normal crew duties he manages our website and Facebook page. He was also heavily involved in RNLI video editing, some of which was used in last year’s BBC programme, ‘Saving Lives at Sea’, which featured some of our rescues. His invitation was well deserved and I hope that the experience will be a treasured memory for Chris”. Chris, who lives in Nottage Porthcawl, works in the family business and has been a crew member for 14 years. He was nominated for his contribution to the local community and will be invited into the grounds of Windsor Castle to watch the arrival of guests and listen to the Wedding Service broadcast live. After the ceremony they will watch the Bride and Groom Carriage Procession. Chris said, “I am looking forward to being at Windsor Castle on this historical day. It will be an unforgettable day, I am very proud to have been given this invitation”.

PORTHCAWL INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE Project update Our ‘100 Bins Project’ is complete. In fact, 106 new bins have been installed, taking the total number of litter bins to 209 across all five wards. Thanks to a successful partnership between PTC and BCBC, BCBC’s street cleansing team is emptying all bins. The contents of all bins are processed and, where possible, recycled. If residents feel that any litter or dog waste problem areas have been missed, please contact your local independent councillor. What’s happening generally? At PTC’s AGM, held at the Grand Pavilion on 10th May, Cllr Norah Clarke was elected as Mayor of Porthcawl, taking over the chain from Cllr Lorrie Desmond-Williams, who has worked tirelessly over the past 12 months. Cllr Graham Walter was elected as Deputy Mayor. Going forward, PTC’s monthly meetings will be held at different accessible venues across town. What are your Independents doing? Recently, we have overseen further improvements to Newton playpark, making it a cleaner and safer place to play. THE WELSH ASSEMBLY The Welsh Assembly is part of the fabric of our country. It’s where decisions, which matter most to us, are made – decisions on hospitals, schools, and the environment. Our Assembly has grown stronger. More decisions are being made in Wales, closer to us, and that’s right. Last week, this flow of powers from Westminster to Wales was reversed. The Labour Government made a deal with the Tories to send powers back to London. Scotland refused the powergrab, but Labour were too weak to stand up for Wales. The Labour-Tory deal, done in the name of Brexit, will mean our powers will be snatched. Shockingly, the Withdrawal Bill says even if the Assembly tries to stop Westminster going against our interest, we can simply be overruled. After 20 years of devolution, we won’t be able to stop Westminster meddling in our health, schools, or environment. I’m shocked Labour are happy to hand power back to London. I don’t trust the Tories to with our farms, young people, or NHS. We know they’ll always protect their backers in the city of London. As Leanne Wood said, “this is a Labour-Tory stitch-up like no other”. Plaid will continue to stand up for Wales. Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

Finn is a charming six-year-old Greyhound. He is a big lad with a huge heart to match. He walks lovely on his lead and enjoys a sprint off lead too. He gets on well with other dogs, however, he would need to be the only dog in the home and as an ex-racing Greyhound, he is unable to live with cats or small furries. Finn can live with children aged 11 years and over. He’d prefer a home where his new owners are not out for long, as he’s not used to being left for long hours. If you can offer this sweet boy a comfy bed to curl up in, then please get in touch. For more information on Finn, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. You can also visit our website at www.dogstrust.org.uk

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES The soccer World Cup starts this month and it’s a huge global event. For some people sport has become their religion. Former Liverpool FC manager Bill Shaklee said, ‘some people think football is a matter of life and death, it isn’t, it’s much more important than that’. It’s thought that around 3 billion people, half the world’s population, will watch some part of this year’s competition in Russia. How quickly we can forget the controversies surrounding this years event: Russia’s invasion and occupation of Ukraine, the alleged corruption of FIFA president Sepp Blatter, the claims of doping among Russian athletes, the Skripal poisoning and concerns about violence towards travelling fans. Has sport become too important in our lives? Are our sporting idols really worth the huge amount of time and money we spend on them? The Apostle Paul loved sport and used its imagery often in the bible. He was targeting a different sort of goal. ‘I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards’ (Philippians 3:14). What is your life’s goal? When this life ends will it really matter if the Germans win the World Cup again? Rev. Martin Gillard Gilgal Baptist Church

STAND AND DELIVER! You have probably heard of Dick Turpin, but who was he and what happened to him? Dick Turpin was baptised on 21 September 1705 at Hempstead, Essex. He established himself as a butcher, stealing stock from local farmers. Later, while on the run, he resorted to robbing smugglers who roamed the local coast. On 4 May 1737, Turpin murdered Thomas Morris while out poaching. With a £200 bounty on his head, Turpin fled to Yorkshire. Apparently, he rode the 200 miles from London to York on his mare, Black Bess, in fifteen hours, but John Nevison, aka Swift Nick, another highwayman, probably achieved this feat. Under the name of John Palmer, Turpin dealt in horses. Unsuccessful, he ended up in York’s Debtors’ Prison where, on 6 February 1739, he wrote to his brother-in-law asking for help. However, his brother-in-law refused to pay the sixpence delivery charge and returned the letter to the post office where James Smith recognised the handwriting. Smith travelled to York and identified Palmer as Dick Turpin. Turpin was duly arrested, Smith pocketed the £200 reward and a legend was born. A BUSY START TO 2018 FOR RNLI LIFEBOAT CREWS AT PORTHCAWL

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL In the first 5 months of 2018 we were the busiest Coastwatch station in the UK for the number of handled incidents! Not bad for one of the UK’s smallest stations! April was our busiest month on record with 4 logged incidents and a further 27 monitored incidents. May looks like following a similar pattern with 4 logged incidents at the time of writing, involving tidal cut offs, kayakers, hazard to small craft and a disabled dayboat. Following discussions with those involved in coastal safety, in April we introduced and ran 3 additional “Storm Watches” to monitor and advise members of the public attempting to venture onto the pier (or in the vicinity of our station) during rough sea conditions and high winds and tides. We held our first promenade collection day of the year in early May where, thanks to the generosity of the public, £662 was raised. This will aid our lookout as we aim to update and improve station equipment. At the next monthly Crew Meeting at the Hi Tide, representatives from Border Force will provide an insight into coastal awareness and increased vigilance to NCI, Porthcawl Coastguard and Llantwit Major Coastguard. Nick Weedon, Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

Porthcawl lifeboat crews have been paged almost forty times already this year. Casualties have varied from surfers, windsurfers, broken down vessels and persons cut off by the incoming tide. Deputy Launch Authority, Aileen Jones, commented, ‘Our volunteer crews train each Sunday morning and Wednesday evening to build and maintain the varied skills needed to meet casualty needs. They can be paged 24/7, for 365 days of the year. Some ‘shouts’ are caused by failure of equipment which in most cases cannot be foreseen. We recommend that all sea users have means to signal for assistance e.g. flares, marine radio, or mobile phone although the latter can be a problem if there is no phone signal. Lifejackets or buoyancy aids should always be worn whilst afloat. Our website, www.porthcawl-lifeboat.co.uk shows wind speed and direction, and importantly the tide times of high and low water and tide heights. We encourage all sea and particularly beach walkers in the Southerndown and Llantwit Major areas to take notice of tide times to avoid being cut off by an incoming tide. There are few access/exit points, due to the cliffs in this area so planning is essential to ensure your ability to walk from a chosen start point to an exit area safely. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS Each month, Melanie Lazarus, Director & Solicitor at Melanie Lazarus & Co Solicitors, the only Specialist Family Law Solicitors in Bridgend will answer some of the typical questions put to her by new clients on a relationship breakdown: Q) I am dealing with my own divorce but there are issues regarding finances to resolve. I have been told I need to go to mediation. Is this correct? A) This is something you should seriously consider. Family mediation is where an independent trained professional, usually a Solicitor, but not always, meets with both parties to work out an agreement about issues such as children or finances, sometimes both. I always encourage my clients to consider mediation as it is a very constructive and cost-effective way of resolving matters and avoiding the substantial legal costs which arise if Court proceedings are filed. At mediation appointments, a mediator will usually meet with the parties on their own first to explain the process. Then if both parties agree and the mediator deems it suitable, will arrange a number of joint sessions. However, it is important to realise that a mediator cannot provide you with advice e.g. re a financial settlement and for that reason, you should always have ongoing advice from your Solicitor alongside the mediation process to ensure that the terms you agree are in your best

interests. Mediation appointments cost roughly £100 - £120 plus VAT each per person and you may need up to 4 or 5 depending on your case. If you agree terms, the mediator can draw up a document known as a Memorandum of Understanding setting out the agreement which you can then take to your Solicitor with a view to drafting up a legally binding document, should the case be in relation to finances. Mediation will potentially save you on legal costs but in my view, it is essential you continue to have advice from your Solicitor during the process. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

A FAMILY MEDIATION A family mediation service can help resolve a wide range of disagreements such as arrangements for your children, financial agreements and other matters. Family mediation can help you to maintain a reasonable relationship and level of communication with your partner - which is helpful if you need to work together for the sake of any children. Although family mediation involves talking through the issues you are arguing over, it is not designed to provide emotional support or bring a couple back together. Both parties must be willing to negotiate in good faith. If finances are involved, honest disclosure of your financial position is a must. Mediation can be faster and cheaper than Court proceedings. Mediation sessions only require one trained expert rather than each party having their own solicitor. Typical family mediation involves two to six sessions, each of between an hour and ninety minutes. The mediator uses their skills to guide the discussion through a series of stages: • Exploring the issues, including allowing each partner to express their point of view, • Identifying how you could deal with the problem. • Reaching agreement where possible and identifying any unresolved areas. The mediator will provide both of you with a written summary of what you have decided. If you proceed with mediation, the mediator will ask you both to provide basic information. Generally, family mediation takes place in joint sessions involving both partners. You can speak freely, knowing that discussions during mediation are confidential, and nothing you say can be used against you if the dispute later ends up in court. The mediator acts as an impartial expert. Although they may highlight issues that need to be considered, however the mediator will not provide either of you with legal advice. This means that it may well be a good idea to get your own independent legal advice before using a family mediation service. Knowing what outcome you could reasonably expect if a dispute ended up in court can make it more likely that the mediation will succeed. Be aware that family mediation services are not legally binding. Either party is free to stop mediation at any time, or to decide afterwards to reopen the dispute regardless of any written record of your decisions. If family mediation has helped you to reach a satisfactory agreement, ask your solicitor to apply to the court for a consent order that will make the agreement binding. LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY: PLANNING FOR THE UNEXPECTED

It would have been a shock to many to hear the names of Dame Barbara Windsor and Sir Alex Ferguson in the news; not for their comedic work or managerial prowess but rather Dame Barbara Windsor announced she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and Sir Alex Ferguson suffered a brain haemorrhage. These two sad announcements highlight how fragile life is and how the normal everyday can be turned upside down at the drop of a hat. However, despite this, 11,500 families per year are reported as having to apply to the court to appoint a deputy for a relative as they did not have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA); this is a lengthy and costly process. An LPA is a legal document where you nominate a trusted friend or relative to look after your financial affairs if you lose capacity. This must be done when you still have capacity so its important to act now. According to Alzheimer’s Society, by 2025 more than 1 million people will have dementia, with 1 person being diagnosed every 3 minutes. Whilst this is a rather depressing thought we can be proactive and put our affairs in order so that, if the worst does happen, we can ease the burden on our loved ones. You cannot assume your loved ones can walk into a bank and access your money to pay for your care, household bills and so on. We’ve talked about an LPA for finances but there are actually two types of LPA. There is also an LPA for health and welfare which allows you to nominate an individual to make decisions over day-to-day healthcare and medical treatments, as well as deal with any health and social care staff. This kind of LPA can only be used AFTER you lose capacity. These two LPA’s are entirely independent of each other. Just because you give the trusted person power of attorney over your health, that doesn’t mean they will automatically gain control over your financial affairs and vice versa. Emma Hardwidge of RLE Law Solicitors says ‘Unfortunately, too many of us underestimate the impact of losing capacity and the burden this places on loved ones who may not be in a position

WW

to help financially until a court order is obtained, or even be in a position to pay the cost of an application to court. This can be an even more distressing time for loved ones who are already having to take on a caring role. There’s no specific age when you should consider making an LPA but if you have lost capacity, it’s too late and you should act now’. Emma Hardwidge is the Director Head of Private Client Department at RLE Law Solicitors and an accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly. Emma Hardwidge - Director/Solicitor RLE Law

MADELINE JOINS KING DAVIES Madeline Rand has joined the firm of King Davies & Partners in Maesteg as Head of the Family Department, having practised in Bridgend for 18 years. As an accredited member of Resolution, she will continue to offer clients the same high quality advice in relation to all aspects of family law. If you have an issue regarding divorce and matrimonial finances, cohabitation, child maintenance, children matters, or indeed any other issue relating to family law, then she will offer an initial consultation for the sum of £100.00 plus VAT, this being £120.00. At the initial appointment, advice will be given and a plan of action discussed in order to progress your matter. At King Davies & Partners we charge a reasonable hourly rate and where possible, we will agree a fixed fee for the work, so that there will be no unpleasant shocks with high bills. For your convenience, home visits can also be arranged if appropriate. Also, Madeline is an experienced Wills Solicitor and will offer a service to prepare and finalise your will for the sum of £100.00 plus VAT, or £120.00. If you and your Partner wish to execute mirror wills, that is, wills which are identical to each other, the cost of these will be £150.00 plus VAT, or £180.00. We have a Wills storage facility at the office, and so you can ensure that your will is kept safely. Further, the firm has a well-established conveyancing and elderly care department, so we are able to offer a complete package in relation to issues arising from the breakdown of your relationship, including dealing with the transfer of the former home. Next month, Madeline will resume her usual topical news piece, but in the meantime she wishes to thank the readers of Seaside News for their continued support.

I am so pleased that District 15 this year has raised enough money to but a ‘Cuddle cot’ for Ty hafan We usually meet once a month when we may have a meal or just coffee and cake and we put fun into fund-raising. We work in and with the community helping and extending the hand of friendship to all who need it. We also work on projects that are truly life changing for others, with women and girls in mind. We make firm and lasting friendships and there is no other group like us. We go to Conferences every year and triennial Conventions all over the world, Melbourne Australia being last month. Sadly... PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS

NEWTON WI

Very busy month with two outings and all our groups in action - an enjoyable lunch at Isabella’s. Our first outing was to Llancaiach Fawr Manor, which proved very interesting, as many improvements had been made. We were lucky with the weather for our second visit as the rain cleared and Slade Garden near Southerdown was shown in all its May glory. Our last meeting began yet again on a sad note as members stood in memory of Peggy Vince who had lost her long battle with cancer. Peggy and her sister Gwen had been members for 30 years contributing greatly to the life of the guild and Peggy will be much missed. Our speaker was Ceri Joseph who entertained us right royally with the history of our local castles together with an amusing cartoon in the form of the Bayeux Tapestry depicting the battle of Hastings. As usual Ceri had us in fits of laughter and we all wished she had been our school history teacher! This months meeting is on June 13th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Mr John Hugh Thomas will talk about Adelina Patti. Do come and join us! Dorothy Thomas. 772157

The May meeting was the AGM and Resolutions Evening. President Jennifer welcomed everyone including our WI Advisor, Mrs. Judith Lucas. The financial statements, reports and Presidents Address were delivered, after which Mrs Judith Lucas gave a talk on Resolutions. We thank her for her help and guidance throughout the evening. Our thanks go to Mynydd Cynffig for their invite to the Social Link Meeting and also for their hard work in making the evening so successful. On April 24th members attended the GFWI Annual Council Meeting at Port Talbot. We were warmly welcomed by the Federation Chairman Mrs. Ann Davies. There were three speakers for the day, the broadcaster Chris Needs, who was hilarious, Mrs. Mavis Tierney an Apiarist spoke on life as a Beekeeper, and the TV Gardener and Presenter Christine Walkden, who spoke of her life and passion for gardening. All excellent speakers, thanks to organisers for a most interesting day. On May 11th we were invited to attend an amazing service and exhibition to commemorate the roll of women in WWI (currently on display at Margam Abbey Church). The exhibition was the brainchild of Cwm Brombil WI, we congratulate them on their wonderful achievement. M Freeman

Business & finance BETTER RATE ON YOUR MORTGAGE The numbers of borrowers who have their mortgage on their lender’s standard variable rate has reached record proportions, according to a recent mortgage industry survey. That means that there are hundreds of thousands of borrowers who are paying far more than they need be just because they find it affordable or they simply can’t be bothered to make the effort to look for a better rate, even with the same lender. We recently had a client who was paying the lender’s variable rate of 4.74% when they could have had a new deal at 1.89%, and the difference in payments each month was over £110…. or £1,320 over the course of a year, which is a ridiculous waste of money. It’s the cost of a holiday or perhaps two thirds of the annual council tax bill. If only that Client had come to us just under two years ago when their rate changed, they could have saved roughly £2,000 by now, we worked out. If YOU are on a variable rate or you simply haven’t bothered to look at your mortgage rate recently, you should call us now, even if you have only a few years left on the mortgage or if you are retired with a mortgage. 01656 782545 is the number you need to call – or 07768 418308 which is available at all times, even weekends. If we can’t answer immediately, leave a message and we’ll soon call you back. The principle of keeping an eye on your rate also goes for those of you with Later Life or Equity Release loans, since rates are their lowest ever now and you may save thousands of pounds over the remaining years of the mortgage. Many such borrowers don’t even know that it’s entirely possible to switch – all it takes is a phone call in many cases. One group of people who often tend not to check is Landlords, those letting properties in the private rental sector. Many of these mortgages have long ago passed their fixed rates and are now on expensive variable rates, when they could be remortgaged onto much lower rates. With the recent changes in tax treatment for Landlords, it is VITAL that you squeeze the best value from your property and we can assist you with all buy-to-let enquiries, again the number is 01656 782545. For all our enquirers, weekend and evening appointments are available, so we fit in with your needs, making it a first-class service – we look forward to hearing from you. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545

PASSIVE INVESTMENT FUNDS – V – ACTIVE INVESTMENT FUNDS Passively Managed Funds (also known as index tracking funds) aim to track the performance of a particular index, such as the FTSE UK Equity Index. They offer a convenient, low cost way to gain exposure to a broad range of shares. The number of tracker funds available in the market has grown enormously over the last few years. The Volatility and the risk of each fund will obviously depend on the type of investments held, and also the manager’s tracking strategy. Actively Managed Funds are where the manager chooses the underlying investments held in the fund on the investor’s behalf. Their aim will be to outperform their stated benchmark, although not all are successful in this goal. One of the main differences between passive and active funds management are fees. As they require less day-to-day 42 | seaside news

management passive funds should have significantly lower ongoing charges. This can be as low as 0.1% per annum With actively managed funds, the extra work and analysis involved means investors will have to pay more in the way of on-going charges. The average annual charge is around 0.75% however some funds charge up to 2% especially if they are performance related. So what do you get back for your money? Well, passive funds in UK Equities have returned over 60% in the last five years but some of the more successful Active funds have returned 120%, so well worth the extra costs. However this is not always the case as the average return of active funds could be less than the passive index and many investors are in poor performing active funds and don’t know it! If you have a portfolio of funds that require analysis and advice or just need general advice on picking funds for your Stocks & Shares ISA please get in touch with Philip Vaughan at Abacus Assurance Financial Services Ltd 01656 772222 established 1982. www.abacusassurance.co.uk Past performance is not a guide to future performance and you may get back less than your original investment.

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

At last the summer is here! Let’s hope we have a good one. With the last of the annual bedding being planted out and the odd gaps filled with any spare plants, we can now begin to relax a little and enjoy the fruits of our hard labour. This time of year we can enjoy such delights as the first dish of strawberries and fresh peas with our dinner. Although they often get eaten on the plot before they make it to the kitchen! Our clubs annual schedule of evening talks and events draws to a close ready for our summer break. Although this aspect of our club activities concludes we have a number of other things that we do in the summer months. These include trips away to visit interesting places and, of course, gardens and almost all of them have been fully booked. So now we are beginning to look forward to our new club year, which begins in September with our annual show. This year we are encouraging our growing membership to enter into the show and, as it includes all ages, we are hoping that the new section for children and families will be well subscribed. Joyce Pegg New members are always welcome – find out more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk

Flaming June – the risk of frost has now passed (at last!) Hopefully you will be gardening in the sun, (but no time to sun bathe, there’s lots to do! Pots need to be cleared of their spring bulbs, dig them out and dry off in the sun, then they can be cleaned and stored dry in the shed, tulips rarely do well the second year so I never bother with them – but you can try! Sow runner and French beans early this month, it may seem late but they originate from Central America, so like a warm soil and constant night temperatures, the same goes for courgettes and sweetcorn. If (a big if) there is prolonged dry weather, set your mower blades high to reduce stress on the grass, and remember, one year’s seed is seven year’s weed, so hoe, hoe, hoe! Our Open Gardens Day is on Father’s Day, June 17th come along, give Dad a treat, a great day out, with lots of tea and cake! Our gardens are fab! Monarch Airlines recent poll showed that roses are Britain favourite flower, surprisingly the Dandelion came in at number 30! (Who did they ask?). Chris Early

GENEROUS MIND - THE VIRTUE OF THE EVERYDAY

A DISABILITY CONSULTANCY FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Our daily work involves a mechanistic and automatic movement of money into various state systems. The system of taxation. How many times do you hear people moaning and recalculating the injustice of being taxed? Tax is interpreted as control, even manipulation. In such speech, there exists an expression of ‘I am being punished for working’. Divisions of us and them form. There is suffering in the minds of the aggrieved. Divisions are only a partial truth. Viewing money as a process of meeting the needs of others can halt mind made suffering. This view connects us to virtue, our small actions do have results. Our contribution is supporting many projects within your locality town. Rebuilding, shaping our environment. Ultimately people’s needs are being listened too and met. This open view breaks through the automatic view of being taken to task by the system. Going to work in whatever capacity is a process of giving and there are many opportunities for us to consider the virtue and contribution that we all make. If that stingy tight thought of ‘taxation’ steals your happiness and anger directed at the ‘system’ arises. Use the contemplation of contribution to soften and balance your inner perspective. Enjoy. Neville Evans

Arts & music COR BRO OGWR’S SPRING CONCERT

Twenty years on and Cor Bro Ogwr continues to delight audiences with its high standard and quality of singing. The April concert featured two demanding works from the classical repertoire: Haydn’s ‘Nelson Mass’ and Mozart’s ‘Vesperae Solennes’. Four soloists and the Cor Bro Ogwr Orchestra joined the choir to give a concert, which was much appreciated by the audience. We were pleased to welcome Carwyn Jones and the Mayors of Porthcawl, Cowbridge, Bridgend Borough and Canon David Hillman. Such support is always appreciated. There were surprise guests for our conductor, Rosie Howarth - her parents were in the audience too, their first visit to a Cor Bro Ogwr concert. Our next concert will be quite different. We are rehearsing a varied programme of contemporary songs, gospel songs, and traditional and well-known pieces given a new spin. It will be fun, cheerful, and get your feet tapping. We are trying out a new venue this time; Coleg Y Dderwen, Heol Yr Ysgol, Tondu, CF32 9EL. Easy to get to and plenty of parking. Saturday July 21st at 7pm. Tickets £10 at the door or tel. 01656 653326 www.cor-bro-ogwr.com Dominique Spearey

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Filming took an important step forward for my new Porthcawl documentary production on the first Saturday of May when I did the aerial photography, thanks to Nick Horton who took me up in a Cessna 172, accompanied by Amie Kaur who acted as production assistant. It was a beautiful sunny day and we flew from Swansea Airport in the afternoon, taking a course across the sea to Kenfig sands, from where we followed a carefully planned route heading for Rest Bay before making several circuits of the town. There’s quite a lot of engine noise inside a light aircraft and it is usual to communicate through headphones and a microphone, although at the commencement of filming I had to take mine off to get close enough to the camera viewfinder, and in addition to that there was a great deal of wind roar from the slipstream with the window open to facilitate filming, but fortunately Amie had the shooting schedule written down in front of her and was able to confirm details with Nick at the controls. Once filming was completed, we made our way back to Swansea for a safe landing. Anthony Hontoir - Downwood Films Tel: 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir, Amie Kaur and Nick Horton 48 | seaside news

KENFIG HILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR - ANNOUNCE NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR The most significant news this year is that of announcing our new musical director following the decision of Phil Juliff to step down after our Annual Concert in July. It is mainly down to Phil’s guidance, direction and his unique style of leading that our chorister numbers have raised at a time where many others are unfortunately dwindling. Phil has been at the helm for the past 10yrs and will be hugely missed by all. Following some robust interviewing of prospective candidates, we are pleased to announce that we have secured the services of Joshua Xerri. Josh, who is moving back to Kenfig, is a mature 23yr old whose first experience of being an MD was when he started training his Parish Church Choir in Cardiff at the tender age of 15. We believe that Josh is the youngest to have held this post and probably one of the youngest persons to have ever been the musical director of a major Welsh Male Voice Choir. We are all looking forward to Josh picking up the Baton in September and we all wish Phil all the very best for the future. Dave Xerri

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK THE WELSH FEST No Glastonbury? Don’t worry, the Welsh Fest will be held between 27th and 29th July in the beautiful setting of Coedarhydyglyn, St Nicholas in the Vale of Glamorgan. I’ve been recommending some of the 100 original acts performing Rock, Pop, Indie, Reggae, Ska, Techno, House, Soul and Folk on four stages, along with non-stop music from top DJs in the dance tent. There’s a Festival Village with food and bars, Kidz Zone, fairground and more. I’m not performing this year but two of our local favourites, Rebecca Hurn and Bridgend’s The Blims, are! Check the Welsh Fest for camping/ticket details. Closer to home, don’t miss Lepton Shoddy’s Solstice Reunion gig at Porthcawl RFC on Friday 22nd June at 7pm. It’s raising money for Sustainable Wales. The band last played 25 years ago and features Murf on didgeridoo, Simms and Richard Thomas on guitars, Chunky on bass, Chris Hughes on drums and Chris Shaw on saxophone. Thanks to Layla John for the onefiveeight CD – I’ll give it a blast. Get well soon, top muso Rob Ash and next month there will be information on the Newton Music Festival in August where Sex will top the bill. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Lepton Shoddy’s Murf

CÔR DYSGWYR PORTHCAWL

The reputation of Côr Dysgwyr Porthcawl continues to grow with invitations received from beyond the Porthcawl area. Recently, the organisers of the Welsh Learners’ Festival, ‘Ar Lafar’, sent an invitation to our Musical Director, Mrs Anne Brown. This festival is an opportunity for Welsh Language learners to enjoy a day of activities and speak Welsh. It encourages participation at events in various locations across Wales, including the National History Museum of Wales, Saint Fagans. The choir was chosen to close the festival at Saint Fagans this year and they decided to perform several traditional Welsh songs. The aim was to encourage audience participation in some of the more popular songs. The choir performed in the Atrium to an appreciative audience. It was most satisfying to see people of all ages enjoying the performance and joining in with the singing. The choir will also compete in the Welsh Learners’ Choir competition at the National Eisteddfod at Cardiff Bay in August and preparations are going well. Irene Collier

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Club Competition Three, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Members were allowed two entries into each section. Les Loosemore from Bridgend judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was Richard Craze with ‘Cafe Bar’. The winner of the Digital Trophy was Geoff Baker with ‘Bewick’s Swan Bathing’. Congratulations to both Richard and Geoff for winning the competitions and a big thank you to all participants for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk Geoff Baker

ORCHESTRA CELEBRATES 50 YEARS This July, The Rhondda Symphony Orchestra returns to Porthcawl for their annual concert at All Saints Church. As part of the orchestra’s 50th anniversary celebrations, this special concert will look back on their successful past as they invite almost all of their former conductors to the stage, each to conduct the orchestra once more. Amongst the line up will be local resident, Mr Jeff Lloyd, who established the orchestra back in 1968. The concert programme promises to have something to appeal to everyone, including Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Two of Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances, Leroy Anderson’s Belle of the Ball and Bernstein’s Candide Suite. So why not pop along and support this fantastic community orchestra as they celebrate five decades of music making. All Saints Church, Porthcawl Saturday 7th July, 7:00pm Tickets £10 (under 18’s free!) Email: rhonddasymph@yahoo.co.uk

Following a successful 50th year, the Club won Welsh Super Club 2017. This is awarded to the club with the highest accumulated points for all National Championships. 2018 has started successfully with the club aggregately winning the Welsh Pool Championships. The British Pool Championships were next and are a lot more competitive, with teams competing from all over the UK. Nippers managed an amazing 16th place, with a team of only 25 compared to other teams with 50+, youth 7th, seniors 3rd and masters 2nd. The overall medal haul was 29 golds, 24 silvers and 21 bronze. There were also 5 British Records broken by club members. By the time you’re reading this, the beach season will be well and truly underway in preparation for a season of rankings, carnivals and ocean championships. The club is actively looking for new members aged 7+, and new this season we are starting a Sandhopper section for children aged 5-7 years. The Sandhoppers aim is to start beach safety awareness and experience ahead of joining Nippers. PORTHCAWL RUGBY ROLLERCOASTER “Oh what a game” is not a remix of the 1975 Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons hit but it is the most popular comment heard in and around Porthcawl over this past few weeks. It relates to the extraordinary performance of the Porthcawl Rugby Club and especially Richard Hnyda and his incredible team that won the WRU National Bowl final in Cardiff 33-31pts. It quickly became a master class on how the game should be played and was arguably the best rugby game ever seen at the Principality Stadium. It was not a walkover for the “Seaweeds” as Pembroke were worthy opponents who played some amazing rugby and could have won the match. But it was Porthcawl’s day and the players and the club represented everything that is good in Welsh rugby and made local supporters and the town very proud. On behalf of the Porthcawl’s (over 50’s) Shout Forum and all older residents overlooked for a first team place, we would like to congratulate the team and the club for an inspired and unforgettable performance. Also a Thank You to Seaside News contributor, Paul Fielding who brought the game back to life with his excellent coverage in local newspapers. Gary Victor Porthcawl Shout Forum

PORTHCAWL TOWN MINIS & JUNIORS UPDATE

We had a great end to the Football Season with our U12’s winning their Second Cup, great work Gavin, Simon and the boys! Not to forget a great bunch of parents who have stood in the rain, wind and snow to cheer their children on!! Our U16’s hosted a touring side from Trinant JFC which resulted in them ending their Season on a high! Some of our Mini teams have been attending Football Festivals around South Wales, from as far afield as Llandeilo to Merthyr. A great opportunity for them to hone their football skills with a variety of teams they don’t usually get to play against. I’ve been lucky to attend a few of our team’s presentation evenings and what has been great to see is the camaraderie amongst the players, coaches and parents. We’re looking forward to seeing this positivity continue next Season. If you’re up at Rest Bay on Sunday June 10th, don’t forget we’ll be holding our Annual Porthcawl town Athletic Minis and Juniors Football Festival! Hope to see you there!! The game itself was filmed by Japanese T.V. who were making a documentary on grass roots rugby and were pleased with such a great game played in good spirit.
