LETTERS PORTHCAWL ECO-HEAVEN Dear Editor, I really want to make people aware of my friend’s Zero Waste business. The Pantri Box is a not-for-profit ecohaven snuggled down one of the quaintest streets in Porthcawl. Within its 20ft squared parameters lies most of the essentials needed to live a more sustainable and mindful life whilst eliminating plastic and buying only ethically sourced produce. The Pantri Box has quickly developed a loyal following with customers coming back on a weekly basis to refill their dried organic goods and eco-friendly cleaning products. ‘Once people start making the swap to plastic free alternatives they rarely revert’ explained Gemma. But in a bid to make it even easier for today’s super busy society the Founder, Porthcawl born Gemma Lewis, has started an exciting new project with West Park Primary School. TPB is donating 200L of handwash and Year 6 have been tasked with creating their very own in-house zero waste shop for their friends and families. Kids are already very aware of the climate crisis...but hopefully this project will at least make them feel proactive and proud of their efforts to create change’. Drop into The Pantri Box and relax in the little courtyard with a coffee and cake and find out more about this project and ecoliving. Take the weight off your feet… and conscience in a small ethical shop with big ambitions. Amanda Atkinson, Porthcawl
SALT LAKE Dear Editor, As far as the Porthcawl Civic Trust Society is aware, the BCBC juggernaut is still rolling along to its predetermined destination at Salt Lake, while ignoring the large number of warning signs it passes along the route. As things stand, Salt Lake is to become the home of a food store (now known to be an Aldi) situated at the northern end, together with numerous apartment blocks, both adjacent to the food store and at the centre of Salt Lake A new bus terminus may also be located on the site. At some indeterminate date, we MAY have some form of leisure facility at the southern end. Only time will tell. No details are available and the Society suggests that residents don’t hold their breath! On 8th January 2021, the Society wrote to BCBC Council Leader Huw David urging him to enter into a full consultation exercise with Porthcawl residents regarding BCBC’s plan. Although the letter was acknowledged, there has been no response. So, while the 8 members of BCBC’s Cabinet (none of whom live in Porthcawl) have been given the opportunity to consider and 8 | seaside news
Have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk agree to the plan, the town’s 16,000 residents, who are the main stakeholders and will be directly affected, have still not been granted the same rights. So much for consultation and democracy. All the feedback the Society has received or seen indicates that the majority of residents are opposed to BCBC’s plan. The Society suspects that BCBC’s determination not to enter into any serious consultation is because it is aware of this widespread opposition. This being the case, BCBC would be faced with either ignoring the wishes of residents or completely changing the plan. The Society again urges BCBC to seek the views of Porthcawl residents before any more money and time is spent on the scheme. If the Society is wrong in its assessment of the position, so be it. At least residents will have had the democratic right to have their say. Don Tickner For the Porthcawl Civic Trust Society

Exit
by Belinda Bauer When pensioner Felix Pink enters Number Three, Black Lane, he is there to perform an act of kindness and charity as a member of the group known as ‘The Exiteers’ : to keep a dying man company as he takes his last breath. Unfortunately, just 15 minutes later Felix is on the run from the Police, having made the biggest mistake of his life! His world is turned upside down as he tries to discover what went wrong whilst trying to stay one step ahead of the law! A quirky, original crime novel which kept me smiling all the way through to the bittersweet ending.
PORTHCAWL LIBRARY OFFICIALLY REOPENED Porthcawl Library has been officially reopened by the Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor Ken Watts, following its recent refurbishment. A grant from the Local Government Cultural Service Fund (Welsh Government Culture and Sport Division) was used 10 | seaside news
to reconfigure and redecorate the front half of the library, to increase the size of the children’s library and move the public computers to a space with more privacy and closer to the printing facilities. The front desk has been moved, so that it no longer causes a bottle neck at the entrance, and there is a new seating area, which will provide a welcome space for groups to meet again, once the current Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted. COST OF CANCER
HELP!
Finally, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Fingers crossed the lifting of lockdown continues to go as planned. We are still in need of some fresh ideas for fundraising so if anyone has got some ideas, please do share. I can safely say that we will not be putting the Valley to Coast Walk on this August, but if some of you would like to do the 18 miles over the month of August again as you did it last year, please do feel free, but if you could let us know that would be great. Do not forget why we do all this fundraising. We do it to help those who are going through treatment for Cancer. We help with things like gas, electric, council tax etc. All the bills that do still need to be paid. Anyone who gets in touch will be treated with the upmost privacy. We will not sell your details onto anyone else because we do not believe it is right to do so. Your details are just that, your details. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, and Instagram. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Take care of yourself and of others. COVID has not gone away fully yet. We do not want to find ourselves in another unfortunate lockdown. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
“What is the bravest thing you ever said?” “Help, “was the reply. The boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse: Charlie Macksey Asking for help isn’t giving up; it’s refusing to give up. Help may come not necessarily from the person you thought would give it, maybe not from family, friend or partner. It may be a random encounter with an acquaintance, who sees your internal struggle when no one else can, not even you! Sometimes people try to solve their difficulties with the same mind that created them, this seldom works. One may not be able to think clearly through a brain fog caused by pain, mental or physical illness. The same thought going round and round, wishing for help, or a different life but everything staying the same as frustration increases. Stop! Take a breath, engage your senses, what can you see touch, taste, hear, & smell? Name them, if you are able let the senses invoke memories of favourite times and know that there is an opportunity to create new memories every morning when you wake up. Even if it didn’t quite feel that way today. Try Andy’s Man Club Porthcawl RFC for peer-to-peer support. info@andysmanclub.co.uk Margaret Brown
SUGAR & SWEETENERS
Quitting refined sugar can be tough, but given how incredibly harmful sugar can be, it’s definitely worth the effort. NEWS AMBITIOUS PLANS FOR NEW LOCAL SCHOOLS Plans to deliver the first new schools to be built in the Cornelly area in more than 40 years are continuing to develop. We want to create a new English-medium school, transform and enlarge Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr, and provide new community facilities for the Integrated Children’s Centre. The ageing Corneli and Afon Y Felin schools would be replaced with a new English-medium school featuring a two-form entry system, a 60-place nursery and a 15-place resource centre for pupils with additional learning needs. This would be established at Plas Morlais by entering into agreement with the current site owner, Valleys to Coast Housing, and exchanging the location for land vacated at Afon Y Felin. Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr would gain all-new buildings and expand onto the site occupied by Corneli Primary to become a two-form entry school with a 60-place Welsh-medium nursery. The Integrated Children’s Centre, which is currently located on the Corneli site, would remain in place, and new community amenities and outdoor sports facilities would become available. These ambitious plans are still in the early stages, but represent a multi-million pound investment to provide children with the best modern educational facilities possible – look out for further updates. NEW MAYOR FOR PORTHCAWL There is a new face at the helm of Porthcawl Town Council when at the recent AGM Cllr. Tracy Hill was unanimously elected to serve as Mayor of Porthcawl for the council year 2021/22. Tracy has worked for Ty Hafan as a Family Support Practitioner for fifteen years. Having lived in Porthcawl for over 35 years she is well known in the community for her charity work and for the many town organisations she is involved with. Tracy said, “It is both an honour and a privilege to have this opportunity to represent the Town of Porthcawl as its Mayor. I’m very much looking forward to meeting as many residents,
volunteers and organisations during my year as possible when covid restrictions are relaxed and we can all get out and about more. Nottage Councillor Mark Chegwen was voted in as our new Deputy Mayor who will be supported by his wife Debbie as Deputy Mayoress. Mark said, “I was born in St David’s Way and I have lived in Porthcawl all my life. I will do my utmost to support Tracy in her new role as Mayor of Porthcawl”.
Deadline date for the July issue is: Tuesday 15th June COUNCIL SEEKS TO ESTABLISH LAND OWNERSHIP Notices seeking to confirm ownership details for land located in and around Sandy Bay and Coney Beach have provoked a lot of rumour and debate. Welsh Government has even reported receiving objections to compulsory purchase orders (CPOs), which do not exist, so here’s what is happening. The notices are intended to support the delivery of future stages of Porthcawl’s ongoing regeneration by confirming what the current land ownership details are. This is because the area contains several small parcels of land which, at some point in the future, may need to be acquired via CPO. We want to work closely with other landowners and businesses to support new retail, residential, recreational and open space opportunities within the Coney Beach and Sandy Bay areas. We also intend to establish an all-new school along with enhanced coastal protection and new ecological measures. The notices do not represent any formal compulsory purchase – at this stage, we are simply trying to establish who owns what so that we can progress the next phases of the regeneration, and develop a report to Cabinet outlining local ownership and site interests. Anyone who believes they have an interest in the land can make the council aware by emailing talktous@bridgend.gov.uk COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

LONG SERVICE MEDALS
On a recent visit to Porthcawl lifeboat, RNLI CEO, Mark Dowie, was delighted to be able to present four stalwarts of the fundraising team with Long Service Medals. During the presentation he stressed the importance of fund raising in providing the charity with the means to be able to save lives. The four recipients of the RNLI awards were, David Shillaw, Diana John and John and Marj Abraham. Each had given in excess of 20 years’ service to Porthcawl Lifeboat Station. David is Chair of Fundraising as well as lifeboat treasurer and was accompanied by wife Pat. Diana is Vice Chair of Fundraising having held many other posts over the years. John and Marj have been a great support to the RNLI, John is retired Chair of the station committee and Marj raffled handmade quilts for many
years resulting in excess of £70,000 being raised personally. Lifeboat Operations Manager, Philip Missen said, ‘Delivery of the medals coincided with the visit of our CEO so we took the opportunity to surprise each of the awardees with their presentation. Each merited their medals after giving our station so many years of dedication and it was right that we and the charity could thank them in this way. Ian Stroud

ATLANTIC PLAN IS SUNK
GET SET FOR SUMMER
NEWS that the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl has been ruled out as a potential location for the proposed Women’s Residential Centre in Wales is very welcome. I met Justice Ministers to argue against this site, as it was obvious that this hotel would not be the right place to accommodate women detained under the criminal justice system. Porthcawl has poor public transport and if women from many different parts of Wales were to be housed in the town, their families needed to visit easily. The Ministry has now agreed that this site is not viable. The Atlantic Hotel has been an important part of Porthcawl’s holiday offer to visitors for many years and I hope that this will continue. Porthcawl needs a range of holiday accommodation if it is to remain one of the leading seaside resorts in Wales. We have already lost a number of hotels and now several more are up for sale leaving a huge question mark over their future use. What Porthcawl’s tourism industry does not need is for them to be converted into residential use when so many new houses and flats are already being planned for Sandy Bay and Salt Lake.
As part of our efforts to support the visitor economy and help local businesses recover following the easing of pandemic restrictions, a number of positive changes have been introduced to Porthcawl in time for the summer. We have recruited a team of all-new Welcome Stewards who will be able to support visitors and tourists over the summer months with advice and information about nearby attractions and amenities, public transport, car parking, beach safety, public toilets and more. A new open-top bus operated by First Cymru is preparing to run between Rest Bay and Trecco Bay, and Porthcawl’s all-new land train service is also sure to be a hit. The benches around Pwll y Waun Lake have been refurbished and replaced to ensure that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the area’s natural beauty. In conjunction with Porthcawl Town Council, toilet facilities have been made available at Griffin Park Community Centre, the sports pavilion at Rest Bay Playing Fields and at the Hi Tide Inn in Mackworth Road. Finally, Porthcawl Library has received a fresh new makeover which has increased the size of the children’s section, improved the public computers area and established new space which local groups can use as restrictions continue to ease.

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
Our nursery children were fortunate enough to have some small fluffy visitors in their classroom - baby chicks. It was amazing seeing the children react so tenderly when holding them. It’s also been lovely welcoming our new Rainbows (Rising 3’s). If you have a child who turned three before April 12th 2021 and would like them to join our fun and vibrant Nursery, please contact us on admin.newtonprimary@bridgend.gov.uk. We are so lucky to be situated so close to the beach and we therefore seek every opportunity to utilise this beautiful natural resource. Staff and pupils have organised a Beachathon during the summer term which will provide enviable opportunities for our learners to develop their health and well-being which is of paramount importance to us all at Newton Primary. Rachel John, Head Teacher
ST CLARE’S SCHOOL During lock down/ home schooling Jessica Jones, Meryn Bridge and Rhiannon Matthews from Year 8 took part in a Girls’ Cyber Competition. The competition was run by the National Cyber Security Centre and the girls were questioned under the categories Cyber Security, Cryptography, Logic and Coding. The girls worked really hard together even though they were working independently and beat over 600 schools to qualify for the semi-finals - a terrific achievement! Particularly impressive considering that they had to work remotely to complete it. The semi-final was a whole day event where they competed live against other schools around the UK. The girls worked really hard and it was a very intense day. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it through to the final but the character and enthusiasm that they showed during the day was of credit to us all. Well done girls. Pupils and staff are thoroughly enjoying being back in school and many have taken up offer of the Covid testing kits that are available to all staff and students. Younger year groups have been completing national tests in Maths and English and pupils in Years 10-13 have been completing assessments that will help determine their GCSE, AS and A Level grades this summer. We hope to commence some Transition events later on in the term and if you are interested in joining PCs in September, please contact school on info@porthcawlschool.co.uk
NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Year 2 have learnt so much during their Dinosaur topic over the last term. It all started with a shock discovery in the Dino Den, the children found a dinosaur egg with a letter requesting their help to keep the egg safe until it hatched. They wrote letters back and forth to the Pterodactyl, whose name they discovered was Terry. They had a huge shock when they turned up to school one day to find that the egg had hatched, leaving the classroom in a mess and green slime was everywhere! They have learnt so much about dinosaurs; including classifying them into carnivores and herbivores, learning about and investigating real fossils before making their own with salt dough. Keep an eye out for a dinosaur wandering around Newton very soon...

We’ve had great fun engaging with Mental Health Awareness Week. Activities included cloud watching, yoga, meditation, massage, blowing bubbles, painting, gardening, sea music and relaxing in the sun whilst listening to the amazing Seren Wind Quartet. Although we teach Health and Wellbeing every week, it was great to try new activities and discover further ways of paying attention to the present moment. Learning how to relax and feel positive is an important life skill – we want all our children to have excellent levels of mental health. We are holding ‘PPS FEST’ on Thursday 8th July to celebrate how wonderful our children have been through the pandemic. Thank you so much to Donna at Hasbro Games, Richard at Seaside Bouncy Castle Hire, our Blue Light parents for getting the fire and police services to do some demonstrations and the local bands, dance troops and belly dancers who have all volunteered to give the children a really special day. If you are a local performer or catering business and are willing to volunteer or charge a reduced fee, please contact us ASAP and help give our children a day to remember. NOTTAGE NEWS Our year 4, 5 and 6 pupils topic for this term is ‘Champion’ and have been researching their sporting champions and looking at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games including the Paralympics, the British and Irish Lions tours and other famous sporting fixtures. They have had some fabulous live online Q&A sessions with the likes of Dafydd James and Richard Hibbard, both Welsh Rugby Internationals and Lions players and Charlotte Craddock, former Team GB Hockey squad member at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and gained a fantastic insight into the lifestyle choices, attitudes and values of professional athletes who strove to achieve their dreams. The pupils have also been practicing their running, jumping and throwing skills and analysing the data from times and distances and looking into the value of good nutrition and food groups. Our fingers are crossed for holding our own Nottage Champions Day. Tracy Foster

PRINCE PHILIP
THE BLACK BENCH
BURIED ALIVE
Prince among men, who so graciously bowed, Willingly serving our Queen, Even as Christ washed the feet of his own To teach where true greatness is seen. Prince among men, you answered the call With good humour to meet each demand Inspiring our youth to rise up with strength To serve or to even command. Yes, Prince as a husband, a father, a friend With grace reaching out to each one Serving the One who is Prince o’er all kings And who now welcomes him home with ‘Well done!’ Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
As we walked along the lakeside A black bench caught our eye. Our legs were getting weary So we reached it with a sigh. We dug our water bottle From the bottom of our bag, That long walk in the midday sun Had really mad us sag. Refreshed, we looked around us. Eyes popped, mouths opened wide, As we absorbed the perfect image That graced the other side. Those rolling hills in shades of green Grasses, foliage too, Swept us away to dreamlands Where emotions swirled anew. From their foot down by the lakeside With its solid rocky base, They soared up to the skyline Where the heavens they embraced. That simple wooden bench Worked its magic that spring day. Left its picture printed in our hearts To be cherished, come what may. Judy Dee, Porthcawl
(Song of depression) Why did you wake me? I did not want to be awake You came with your warmth and light And shook out the darkness, You would not let me sleep. You thought you were being kind Afraid I would miss the morning. I had not planned this day, Last night as I closed my eyes I admit I was not thinking of you I thought of no one or of any place No heaven, no haven, no place of peace. I wanted it to be my last sleep No dreams, no desires, no wants No waiting on the steps of stairs Disappointed when you do not appear. I wanted a stranger’s hand to hold I wanted a stranger’s face To be the last face I see.
KEEP LOOKING BACK AND YOU WILL NEVER MOVE FORWARD Not another doom monger I can see it in their face About to say something negative And ruin my happy place We all know how hard it’s been We’ve been through it together We’ve struggled with anxiety We’ve been through stormy weather But what’s the point in re-living it What good will all that do Laying blame on others, resentment It’s only effecting you So keep your negativity and outlook that’s so bleak I’m looking forward to the better times, my next minute, day and week I choose not to dwell on negatives I’m excited for what’s to come So don’t waste your life always looking back After dark there is always sun. Eve Victoria, Porthcawl
THE SNAIL A head, two horns and a tail Let us celebrate the snail God’s gift to the soil Far too perfect to spoil. The shell on his back Is the home that we lack. So, should envy prevail, Please don’t damage the snail. Don’t hurl in the air God’s answer to Prayer. Take him hostage on the hosta, As he climbs to accost you. Place him somewhere with care, As he climbs to the air, And the flower spike he slimes As this poem reminds. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

DOGGY DILEMMAS & PUPPY PROBLEMS
PORTHCAWL LIONS
Enrichment, why does my dog need it? Enrichment encourages a dog’s natural behaviours by providing sensory experiences. It’s essential to provide different enrichment to keep boredom at bay and to prevent your dog from becoming ‘self-employed’. 1) Sensory, Scent; Create a sensory garden with dog safe plants and herbs, Collect items from your walks for investigation later. Taste; Provide a taster board of novel, dog safe, foods including meats, veg, fruits. Touch; Explore different surfaces, sand, mud, gravel, tree stumps. Sounds; Wind chimes, birdsong, make a sounds playlist. 2) Food Based, Roll up a towel with goodies in, a muffin tin with different foods in with balls on top, apple bobbing, use a snufflemat, load a lickimat, provide a new chew – a Yaker, goats ear, braided lamb stick. 3) Physical, Digging, exploring, walking on wobbly surfaces, chasing bubbles, climbing on. 4)Social, Car ride, interactions with people or other animals, investigate new places together. 5) Brain Games, Play hide n’ seek, search for favourite toys/treats, use puzzle feeders. 6) Toys, Chase a flirt pole/long tuggy, let them unstuff an old toy, rustling plushie. Have fun! Julie Williams APDT IMDT South Wales Dog Training Academy
At last, we will soon be able to meet in person, instead of zoom, to plan properly. We hope to run a new Porthcawl in Bloom contest next month, in which proud gardeners can send us photos of their pride and joy - from specimens to flowerbeds, lawns to window boxes (lionsinbloom@gmail. com between 7th and 21st June - full details on our website, entry free but donations welcomed). We also hope to arrange a variation of our annual Sandcastle Competition in August; also more runs, booksales and - in answer to so many questions - CAR BOOT SALES as soon as we can resolve issues of social distancing etc. Keep an eye on our website. This restart would also be a great time to join us - anyone keen to serve the community in a time of change and uncertainty, coming out of lockdown, working from home, new to the area, think about joining us - perhaps along with like-minded friends and new ideas. You would be most welcome and ‘lionism’ really is rewarding and worthwhile. Ring Jim to discuss on 01656 859505
TALBOT COMMUNITY CENTRE During the pandemic, Talbot Community Centre has been providing a meal delivery service for those who have been shielding. We want to thank those who volunteered to help us provide that service. Several projects/alterations have also been undertaken during this time. This includes redecoration and changes to the layout of the main hall, new lighting throughout the Centre and repairs that had become necessary. As you may be aware, membership subscriptions were due on 1st April for this year. FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE
Hello everyone, we are back in the workshop but with limited numbers to ensure all members are as safe as possible. Although we were not taking tool donations during the lockdown we had quite a few people just dumping stuff off resulting in us now being short of space. Until we have sorted and processed these tools please do not bring any for a while until we have storage space. If you wish us to make a collection, you can telephone us with your details and what you have so we can plan it in. Things are starting to move, there is a big project just started in Sierra Leone where 84 young people will be doing a vocational course through our partner, Craftshare. We will be making kits for metalwork, welding, building and electrical installation. The course also teaches literacy skills, business and life skills helping them on the way to running a successful business. The tools you donate and we process are only a small but important part in getting people out of poverty into a wage earning environment. Thank you all for you generosity in the past and hopefully we can look forward to a better future very soon. Contact – John Hanson 01656 786367
NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL April was a busy month with 20 monitored and 8 logged incidents, including 4 in one watch. These involved tidal cut-offs and surfers, bodyboarders and paddleboarders being blown out to sea by strong offshore winds. We logged and monitored 169 commercial vessels, 1019 leisure, 1 military and 21 others and undertook 360 hours watchkeeping. In May 2021 we celebrate our fifth anniversary at Porthcawl. Our station opened on 21st May 2016 and we have gone from strength to strength, increasing our capability each year and maintaining our status as one of the busiest NCI stations in the UK, handling 279 incidents since opening. We are holding a sponsored walk on June 26th in partnership with our new neighbours at NCI St Donat’s Bay, starting at Sker Point and finishing at Atlantic College, home to NCI St Donat’s Bay. Setting up this Coastwatch station is a new venture for them and will give added coverage along the coastline beyond Nash Point. We welcome their commitment to improving safety and wish them well. All NCI stations are voluntary-run and these events raise funds to allow us to operate. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Gilgal Baptist Church, are extending and developing their Park Avenue home to have a building more suitable for Christian worship and community use in the 21st Century. The building extensions will contain a new entrance, a kitchen and office on one side, and modern toilet facilities and store room on the other. A community cafe style area will be created inside, with a balcony above providing space for seating and extra rooms. These facilities will help the building to be used seven days a week by the church and the community. The church hall alongside will continue its present use as a church and community meeting place both during and after the work. While the building work progresses the church will continue meeting for Christian worship twice on Sundays and the venue/s can be found on the church website www.gilgal.co.uk or on our Facebook pages. The church also welcomes Owen Hughes as its new Youth Pastor, while former Associate Pastor, Steve Lock, starts a new job with the Diocese of Llandaff as Team Leader ‘Schools Engagement Officer’. MADAGASCAR SCHOOLS PROJECT UPDATE
Porthcawl Rotary has recently received a letter from Mark Jacobs, Managing Director - SEED Madagascar (Sustainable Environment, Education & Development). Mark has given us an update on projects we are supporting in two rural communities, Vatambe and Mahatalakay, Madagascar. Thanks to Rotary support, work on these projects started last year and has continued throughout January and February at a great pace. The school building work in the village of Tsagnoriah is where the Rotary support will mainly go. Work commenced in this distant community in January. Mark expects the furniture element for the school classrooms, that Porthcawl Rotary supported, to start in a couple of months and he will keep us informed as progress is made. Porthcawl Rotary President Andrew Singer would like to thank the people of Porthcawl for their continued support and we look forward to posting further updates in the near future. If you would like to know more about Rotary and its activities, please contact Jeff Perren at jeff@perrenpartners.co.uk. Keep safe and well. Rtn Robert Lee

HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Eileen Nearne followed in her sister Jacqueline’s footsteps and served as an SOE wireless operator in France. In July 1944, the Gestapo detected Eileen’s transmitter and arrested her. In August they sent her to Ravensbrück concentration camp then to Silesia. At the camps, the guards forced Eileen into slave labour. However, she remained defiant and refused to betray her colleagues. On 13 April 1945, Eileen escaped with two French women. Marching through the snow and darkness they hid in a forest then travelled to Markkleeberg where the S.S. arrested them. However, they managed to fool the S.S. (it’s remarkable how many agents managed to do this) and with the aid of a priest they hid in Leipzig until the liberating Americans arrived a few days later. After the war, Eileen suffered from what we now recognise as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Jacqueline cared for her and in 1997 she felt well enough to appear on a Timewatch television programme where she discussed her wartime experiences. Eileen died in September 2010 aged eighty-nine. BRIDGEND TOWN HALL
The original town hall stood in Dunraven Place on the site occupied by the war memorial. It was of the design found in many small towns of a courtroom on the first floor supported by arches over a provision market. By 1836 the market had moved to a new site and it was surplus to requirements, described as “a disgrace and an eyesore” and was demolished. The flamboyant new hall, fronted with columns reminiscent of a Greek temple was designed by Swansea architect, John Rayner and opened with much celebration in 1845. The lower ground floor was fitted out as a police station house for the use of the newly formed Glamorganshire Constabulary. Sited on land made available by the Earl of Dunraven, it was overseen by a charitable trust and never owned by the local council. Its main hall was 65ft by 38ft and, over the years, hosted grand balls, dances, plays, concerts and jumble sales. 36 | seaside news
By the 1960s it, was in need of considerable repairs and, sadly, in 1971, amid much protest, it was demolished. It was replaced by the Post Office, an example of 1970s architecture, which cannot be said to have aged as gracefully as its predecessor. Ian Price Bridgend & District Local History Society
THE LADY MOYRA
The Porthcawl News reported in July 1920 ‘The popularity of Pleasure Steamer ‘Lady Moyra’s’ trip from Cardiff to Porthcawl was evident as there was a full complement aboard. ‘ She was built to carry 1,015 passengers. The Lady Moyra was built in 1905 for the Barry Railway Company by Messrs John Brown & Co, Clydebank, and named the PS Gwalia. In 1910 she was sold to the Furness Railway Company and renamed PS Lady Moyra. Following WW1, during which time she was used as a minesweeper, she was sold to the Tucker ‘Yellow Funnel Fleet’ whereupon she once again operated within the Bristol Channel, including regular visits to Porthcawl. The Tucker family from Cardiff, initially tugboat proprietors, operated excursion travel from 1919-1922 before selling out to P&A Campbell’s ‘White Funnel Fleet.’ P&A Campbell purchased the Lady Moyra at an auction that year. The paddle steamer continued to operate within the Bristol Channel with regular sailings from Porthcawl during the summer months to Swansea, Mumbles, Tenby and Milford Haven; evening cruises to the Scarweather Lightship and around the coast. Cost 1/6d. In 1937 having been renamed the Brighton Queen, she was moved to the South Coast. In 1940, during the evacuation of Dunkirk the Lady Moyra, tragically, sank. Ceri Joseph

PROPERTY UPDATE - RLE LAW WELCOMES KELLY RLE Law are pleased to welcome Kelly Hancock to the Team as our new Head of Conveyancing. Kelly is an experienced Property Lawyer with almost 20 years experience dealing with properties in both Wales and England. Kelly has a wealth of knowledge covering all areas of property from standard sales and purchases to lease extensions and shared ownership. Kelly has managed a number of successful Conveyancing Teams within South Wales before joining us at RLE Law and is keen to implement the firm’s growth strategy. Kelly stated that ‘I am excited to be joining such a forward thinking team and, after a very challenging period for all of us in the UK, this is a great opportunity to develop a department committed to offering the best customer experience’.
Should we be File Ready? A hot topic lately in the Conveyancing world is whether a seller should instruct their lawyer before putting their house on the market. The idea of this is to ensure that the sellers and their lawyer have everything on the file as soon as possible and before a buyer is found. Once a buyer is then in place we can get the Contract Pack to the buyer’s lawyers immediately - potentially saving a week or 2 on the usual approach. Here at RLE Law, this is something that we are keen to assist with and we are happy to discuss our approach with any potential new and existing clients, for both selling and buying. We are also keen to discuss with our clients how we can speed up their leasehold transactions and take away those long waits for the Leasehold information packs.
With the housing market currently booming - is now the time to get in touch with regard to selling your property?
New 95% Mortgage Scheme As we approach the end of the stamp duty land tax holiday, we are gearing up to see more of the new Government backed 95% mortgage scheme which will enable buyers to secure a mortgage with just a 5% deposit. As part of the scheme, the Government will underwrite any portion of the mortgage between 80% and 95% (up to 15% of the loan amount), which is great news for qualifying homebuyers looking to purchase properties under £600,000.00. This scheme has been available since the 19 April 2021 and is open to both first time buyers and current homeowners, with many High Street names now offering these mortgages.
Now might be the time to move to that forever home. Get in touch for a quotation today either through our website or by the telephone.

LEGAL SEPARATION AND DIVORCE
COHABITATION AGREEMENTS EXPLAINED We often hear the term ‘common law spouse’, however that is not a legal status. You are either married (or in a civil partnership) or not. If a relationship breaks down, being a ‘common law’ wife or husband does not give you the right to claim against your expartner for maintenance or a share of their assets. However, it may be possible for a parent to make a claim on behalf of a child they continue to look after. When couples are intending to co-habit we advise them to consider preparing a cohabitation agreement. This agreement should provide financial protection for both parties to increase their sense of security and happiness within the relationship, and sadly in the event of the relationship breaking down. Financial issues are key to a cohabitation agreement. It should include: • What rights each partner has regarding property you live in, consideration will be given as to who owns the property or contributed more to its purchase price/mortgage, • Who owns other assets/ chattels/ furniture, savings, investments, • Who will continue to own the assets in the event of separation, • Who is responsible for any debts. • How expenses will be shared while you live together. • Where you have children, either jointly or with a previous partner, the cohabitation agreement should also address this. Some aspects may also need to be supported by legal documentation: for example, to ensure that your partner inherits in the event of your death, you should prepare Wills. A Cohabitation Agreement is a contract between you both. To be legally enforceable, it must have been made with the intention of having legal force during your co-habitation and in the event of separation, the agreement can say so. Even so, a Cohabitation Agreement may not be enforceable if it is unfair. To maximise the chances that it is enforceable, you and your partner should both take independent legal advice on the contents of the Agreement and if need be, negotiate the terms to ensure they are fair for both parties. If you get married (or register a civil partnership), your cohabitation agreement might be taken into account by the court if you later divorce (or dissolve your civil partnership). It is good practice to review your cohabitation agreement every five years, or whenever there are any major changes in your circumstances - in particular, when a child is born. Divorce is one of the most stressful and emotionally difficult life events. Getting the right advice can help guide you through the divorce process. At the point of separation, the family home can be an emotionally charged environment. You might want to leave the family home or you might want your partner to leave. However, before moving out, consider the following: Do you or your partner have an alternative place to go, somewhere that meets your needs and your children’s needs? What is best for your children? If possible, you should aim for as little upheaval as possible – so that the children can remain close to their school, their friends and their childcare. Being close to your support network and to your work will also be important. Safety: if you are in an abusive relationship, your safety and your children’s safety should be your paramount concern. It is possible to apply to a divorce court for an occupation order, which is an order excluding your partner from the house. Should you consider this step necessary, specialist advice is crucial. For separating parents, sorting out the arrangements for their children can be highly emotionally charged, making it difficult to agree – particularly in the early stages. In time, hopefully the practicalities of child care can be discussed and agreed upon freely. If you still cannot come to an agreement then mediation should be considered. Counselling can also be very valuable in some cases, which you can attend together or separately. Speaking to someone about the breakdown of the relationship might help you put matters in perspective and make speaking with your expartner easier. You can also consider family therapy. Although there will be some circumstances where court intervention is required, going to court should be a last resort.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I was divorced from my husband 1 year ago. I was the Respondent in the Divorce and have since remarried. My ex husband and I have yet to sort out a financial settlement. I am worried that I have left it too late. Answer: You are right to be concerned. I do not know whether you had legal advice at the time. Clearly, your husband filed for Divorce against you and the Divorce was finalised prior to a financial settlement being concluded. As the Respondent, you then remarried and as a result, you will now be unable to take the usual route of applying to the Court for a Financial Order under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973. The key issue is your remarriage. If you had not remarried, you could have filed such an application even after the Divorce was concluded. You are now barred from making such an application. Your options are now much more limited. I do not know the extent of your assets but given your circumstances, I recommend that you propose Mediation in the hope that you can agree matters directly with your ex husband. If this is unsuccessful, I urge you to seek immediate legal advice
and you may have to consider an application under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996 or the Married Women’s Property Act 1882. This is not as easy and potentially very expensive hence my advice to attend Mediation first which is always recommended first to avoid excessive legal costs.

FINANCE MONEY AND SUPERSTITION “Sell in May and go away,” they say about your shares! Its also known as the Halloween indicator. Apparently over time the stock market has done better between November and April than May to September. There are all manner of peculiar things said and done when it comes to money. Traders in the past would be afraid of the markets on Friday 13th and freeze but nobody told the computers when automatic trading came in so they carried on as normal. Traders have happy pens or lucky pants. Just when we all thought it was a science there’s also mystery. Why is the number eight associated with wealth and success? Property with the no eight is valued greatly in China supposedly and car number plates with eight sell for more. Why do we throw money into a well before making a wish or only pick up a penny if it’s heads up? Why is it unlucky to put your purse on the floor or you’ll come into money if you find a spider in your pocket? If you have a hairy chest or arms you’re going to be financially secure, sorry girls?! It’s financially lucky if a bird poo’s on your head, just as well cows don’t fly then! They say if you see a shooting star and shout money you’ll get wealthy. You mustn’t give someone a wallet as a gift unless you put money in it or they’ll not prosper. Where does all this stuff come from and could it have any truth in it? Would you believe it that people even consult an Ouija board or clairvoyant in search of wealth? Which brings me neatly on to Water Diviners or Dowsers. I didn’t believe a man with a rod in each hand could find water by wandering around your garden, total mumbo jumbo right? I had one up here last week and he found four wells, bit of a humbling experience I can tell you. When it comes to money don’t rely on luck use your judgment and find a good IFA. ‘HARD TO GET’ MORTGAGES OUR SPECIALITY Whilst the housing market continues to make huge strides in terms of sales, with Wales having the UK’s biggest growth in sales prices during the last twelve months (11.3% increase) it continues to be a difficult time for those people who have either seen their employment situation change over the last year and a half or who are self-employed, as lenders continue to apply stringent criteria to their underwriting processes. In the summer of 2020, we were fortunate to have a new member join the firm, as Karen Ferguson came on board to assist with complex and difficult cases. With 28 years of underwriting experience under her belt, Karen has already been able to obtain mortgages for a number of clients with difficult circumstances and who had failed to get a mortgage sorted elsewhere; she has even been able to help other advisers, who do not have the necessary underwriting experience, to place cases that might otherwise have fallen by the wayside. The word ‘furlough’ has proven particularly difficult as employers have needed to take a close look at their businesses, whilst lenders have become increasingly concerned about the ability of the self-employed to be able to sustain and keep 40 | seaside news
up mortgage payments, especially where businesses have been closed by lockdowns. The irony, of course, is that many self-employed people have had a record year for business, particularly in the ‘key worker’ sectors, where tradesmen especially have been booking work months ahead. Zero hours contracts also have been detrimental to those searching for mortgage finance, yet workers that do certain professions or jobs, can still qualify, depending on the viability and credit records of applicants. That said, we have lenders that actually specialise in helping those who have had difficulties financially, often caused by things such as divorce or redundancy. So, don’t give up; we can’t guarantee to be able to help every applicant but a call to 01656 782545 could be a major step in the right direction. We will return all calls if we’re busy when you call. TO OVERPAY, OR NOT TO OVERPAY? THAT IS THE QUESTION Many readers will have been more than happy with the current historically low mortgage interest rates. However, are you aware of the benefits of overpaying on your mortgage? Each pound that you repay over and above your regular monthly amount can help reduce the debt much more quickly. For example, based on a mortgage of £150,000 with an interest rate of 1.99% over a 25-year term, your monthly repayments would be around £635 a month. If you rounded that up to £700, you could expect to shave almost 3 years from your mortgage term and be mortgage free that much quicker. Overpay by £25 a week and you’ll reduce your term by approximately 4 ½ years! Your monthly payments could then be diverted to other areas, such as funding a Pension or ISA. Of course, this won’t be right for everyone, and beware of overpayment penalties etc. Also, ensure that you have a cash reserve of around 3 months outgoings in case of emergency. It’s wise to seek advice in this area, and I can help. As an Independent Financial Adviser with Tavistock Partners (UK) Ltd, I am happy to provide you with a complimentary mortgage overview, and advise you on your correct course of action. This will include checking that you are on the best possible rate for your circumstances. If you have finished your mortgage fixed rate and are now paying the standard variable rate, please get in touch, as you could be paying more than you need to. I am able to search the whole market, so can source deals that you will not find on the high street. Give me a call on (01656) 771747, or 07859 129580 and let’s see if we can reduce your mortgage term. I’m still able to do video or telephone meetings if required, at a time to suit you best. Enjoy your plants everyone! June it’s a wonderful time in the garden, long days to enjoy. Lawns need cutting at least once a week, any bedding plants not yet put out need to be added to your borders. Hanging baskets and containers should be positioned, spring flowering shrubs can be pruned. Don’t forget to shade the greenhouse and water wisely. Pinch out those tomato side shoots, support and stake any tall, floppy plants. Harvest early potatoes, lettuce and salad ingredients. Lots of hoeing and weeding will keep the garden smart. Hopefully the weather will be kind and we can all enjoy our gardens as roses bloom and the garden really comes into its own. Follow us on our Facebook page or website www.lalestongardenclub.co.uk
We are gradually getting back to normal. The stores are open Wednesdays and Saturdays now and are well stocked although some supplies are still difficult to get. Most of the former staff have returned having received both doses of their vaccinations. We have two new recruits to our ranks, Dai Long and Christine Meredith, who have delighted us with their enthusiasm and gardening knowledge and experience. Many thanks to Dave Jones for his sterling work while the regulars were on sick leave. It is unlikely that we will be organising any garden visits this year due to the continued uncertainty about the progress of the battle against Covid. Membership subscriptions will probably resume in October. The 2019/2020 AGM will be held together with the 2020/2021 AGM sometime in November. Nice to be back. FrankFulgoni
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB The 20th June is the longest day of the year, bringing warmer days, extra sunlight, flowers are blooming, there’s lots to harvest in the veg plot, everything is growing fast, including the pesky weeds! Try to keep on top of them, they are very competitive for water, sunlight and nutrients, don’t let them win! Now the garden is in full swing and the lawn is being cut regularly (hopefully) there will be plenty of composting material. When adding grass cuttings to your compost bin add a shovelful of soil this speeds up the composting process. Plant up some edible hanging baskets, strawberries and trailing tomatoes, delicious, and away from our slimy friends June is definitely veg month, plant broccoli, carrots, courgettes, peas and beetroot, wonderful harvest in September. Our Open Gardens Day is back! In conjunction with the NGS we have some of Cefn’s beautiful gardens open for you to visit, June 27th 11am til 5pm, fab day out! We’d love to see you. June’s flower is Honeysuckle. Honeysuckle is a symbol of pure happiness, sweetness and affection, perfect! But did you know, it makes a brilliant toy for your cat, try it out on puss, they love the strong scent. Chris Early 42 | seaside news

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK ‘Touch the Rocks’ – An Album Worth Waiting For. Chartered Hurricane’s album, ‘Touch the Rocks’, is finally released. The Porthcawl band - formed in 1980 - featured Phil Jones vocals, Mark Jones and Rob Millar guitars, Mitch Mitchinson bass and Terry Thomas drums. They released a single, ‘Cathy Come Home’, and recorded some good demos that sadly didn’t get fully finished as the group disbanded in 1983. Fast forward 35 years and Phil wanted to re-record the songs featuring the original members. Sadly, drummer Terry Thomas passed away a few years ago but his drums can still be heard on the CD, as samples were used from original demos. The recordings were finished by summer 2020 only weeks before the shock passing of singer Phil, who had dedicated his life to music. However, Mark bravely soldiered on to complete the project. And what a great album it is! Standout track? They are all standout tracks! From rock songs like ‘Touch the Rocks’ and ‘Never in a Million Years’ to the ballads ‘So Many Words’, ‘Porthcawl’ and the poignant – and my favourite – ‘Beds in Heaven’. A class album and a fitting tribute to Phil and Terry’s memory. Buy the CD on the band Facebook page, with proceeds going to Phil’s family. You won’t be disappointed! A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Possibly the most glorious years of the cinema were those that coincided with the heyday of the newsreels which, in my opinion, were the 1930s, when news and current affairs, often dominated by sport and politics, were brought to the big screen in a series of short documentarystyle films, sometimes tragic, often comically irreverent, with a chauvinistic attitude that would be considered scandalous in today’s somewhat sanitised world of twenty-four hour television news. And it was television, albeit that of the 1950s and 1960s, that brought the happy, carefree, knockabout world of the old-style newsreels to a slow but inevitable end. Their practitioners were not known for the artiness of their craft, unlike their featurefilm equivalents, and yet they brought their own curious art form to what might now be considered the forerunner of the documentary film. The typical newsreel cameraman was certainly no shrinking violet, for he had to push himself and his bulky equipment to the front of the queue, and get up to all 44 | seaside news

And the newsreels themselves were assertive and full of self-confidence. A different world indeed. Anthony Hontoir, Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir with 1930s newsreel camera
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Clyne Jones Trophy competition, which due to the Coronavirus restrictions was held via video conferencing. It was a very close competition with John Corcoran winning the trophy with three excellent images, congratulations John. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not join us, we usually meet on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR but our meetings are currently suspended due to the Coronavirus situation so we’re currently holding competitions etc online instead. PORTHCAWL TOWN FOOTBALL NEWS Over 36 players (plus coaches) attended our first training session in over five month at Locks Lane at the end of April and much to their delight, were put through their paces. The enjoyment was fantastic to witness! Regular training sessions are now being held every Tuesday and Thursday at Locks Lane for the foreseeable future, with all abilities welcome!! 1st team managers Ray Walker and Kevin Downes have been working tirelessly behind the scenes, attempting to add some quality players to their squad. We are delighted to announce the return of Morgan Thomas and Joey Jones, from their stint at Welsh League side Afan Lido. They were also able to complete the resigning of Carter Munro plus exciting midfielder Callum Jones, who is formally of Cornelly and Llanharan. Together, with the strong squad that is already here, we are hoping for an exciting and successful season ahead, with the final push for the holy grail of Welsh League qualification. With the assistance of social media guru, Adam Jenkins, Walker has nailed down several enticing ‘friendlies’ in the coming months. We will be testing ourselves, facing the likes of Trefelin FC, Pontyclun and Newport City. We would also like to mention that a friendly face is currently the coach of Newport City, Former player Peter Francombe! A special shout out goes to Steve Brown, Porthcawl Scaffolding Services, as not only did he sponsor a board and a container for our pitch maintenance equipment but also spent hours of his own time repairing the barriers around the pitch. Thank you again Steven. We do have some very exciting news to report to you soon, regarding a current Championship team (potentially Premiership next season...) but all will be revealed in next month’s issue! SPORT
BUSY DAY FOR RNLI VOLUNTEERS Porthcawl RNLI volunteers launched to five incidents within a few hours on Saturday 24 April. Many of the incidents were caused by strong easterly winds (offshore) at locations across the coastline of the County Borough of Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan. The first call came at 2.54pm to a Stand Up Paddleboarder and swimmers being swept out to sea off Ogmore By Sea. All were safely ashore as the lifeboats arrived on scene. On the way back the Atlantic 85 crew came across a windsurfer who’d suffered equipment failure. The casualty was rescued and dropped off on the beach at Newton. As soon as the lifeboats were recovered a further call came for two surfers struggling against offshore winds at Rest Bay. The Atlantic 85 was launched and monitored the surfers until they were safely ashore. Porthcawl RNLI helm, Joe Missen said: “As we washed the lifeboat down we got a further tasking. This time a boy was being swept out by the offshore winds at Rest Bay. The Atlantic 85 lifeboat launched quickly locating the boy clinging to his bodyboard. He was rescued and dropped off at the slipway at Rest Bay.” “As soon as the lifeboat was re-housed the pagers sounded again at 5.28pm. This time the D Class lifeboat was launched, rescuing two people cut off by the tide at Dunraven Bay, Southerndown.” “We’re anticipating a very busy summer ahead. If you’re heading to the coast be aware of the conditions and your capabilities. Only enter the water if it is safe to do so and where possible visit a lifeguarded beach. Check tide times daily and take a fully charged phone. “ In a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. 46 | seaside news
