LAST MONTH’S LETTERS
OLD RAILWAY TUNNEL UNDER NOTTAGE
Dear Editor, The February edition of the Seaside News produced some very interesting and informative letters. Starting with the excellent and detailed letter from Helen Hawes proposing that since BCBC has stopped their funding for essential and important projects in Porthcawl that the local charities for one year step in to the vacuum caused by donating their funds to the Porthcawl Council. This could finance the high costs of repairing the toilets at Griffin Park and John Street and the removal of the cobbled stones in John Street. Also the other needy projects of the town that require prompt action. I am sure that the people of Porthcawl would support her suggestion which is feasible at this time when Porthcawl Council is in desperate need for cash. The second reader suggests that a charge of 50p be made for the use of the toilets but I think this would be too extreme and a more feasible charge would be 10p or 20p, turnstile operated. This would be a reasonable charge as many of the people in Porthcawl are elderly as are most of the visitors who come by coach. If people were charged 50p I am sure they would expect luxury toilets with heated seats and an orchestra playing water music! If BCBC continue with their penalising and drastic cut backs, I would not be surprised if they took action to place toll gates on the entrance road to Porthcawl and expect us to buy a ticket to go on the beach. The third letter was regarding the Maritime Centre. This will be a major and wonderful building that will benefit all the people of Porthcawl. We are fortunate that Stuart Bentley, the architectural and design consultant for the project, as a native of Porthcawl knows the needs and requirements of the town. On completion of the Maritime Centre, Stuart and his team should be congratulated and acknowledged by the council and the people of Porthcawl for their tremendous effort and time in bringing about this serviceable building that we can all enjoy. John Jenkins, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, I wonder if any Seaside News readers would be able to provide some information about the railway tunnel that used to go underneath Nottage village. Traces of the old Porthcawl railway can be seen by walking from the top of the old bridge in Moor Lane, but the clues seem to run out near the junction with Pyle Road. I am told that the opposite end of the tunnel was somewhere near the junction of Fulmar Road and South Road but, again, there doesn’t seem to be much physical evidence around today. As discussed in a recent BBC news article, a number of old railway tunnels in Wales are currently being reopened as walkways and cycle paths using special Welsh Government funding. These include Tregarth tunnel in Bethesda and a 3,148m tunnel between the Rhondda and Afan valleys. I wonder if such opportunities also exist here. Of course, a re-opened tunnel would not necessarily need to be used as part of a walking and cycle path. For example, in Chinon, France they use their underground spaces to store the local wine, which is then served to locals and tourists during the summer. Perhaps readers might have other suggestions. Rhyd Lewis, Porthcawl

SPENDING A PENNY
PORTHCAWL TOILETS
Dear Editor, It’s a while since I was a full-time university economist, and I might be rather rusty, but the letter from Richard Torkington in your February issue deserves a response. He says his Mum remembers how “spending a penny” generated revenue towards staffing and maintaining public conveniences. My family knows Richard’s lovely Mum as a stalwart volunteer at Picton Court Care Home, where my late Mum-in-Law was resident. So I’d like to try and help. The Victorians introduced the penny slot mechanism, and my friend Professor Google informs me the Office of National Statistics has an inflation calculator which indicates that £1 in 1900 would have an equivalent buying power of £122.03 in 2019. Bearing in mind that today there are 100 pennies in the pound, whereas in pre-decimal 1900 there were 240, we divide by 240 rather than 100 which, with rounding, gives a 2019 buying power of 51p. If my methodology is correct perhaps a charge of 50p might be regarded as reasonable. For comparison, at Tenby I think I’ve paid £1 at the turnstile for the conveniences near the harbour. I’ve no strong opinion but 50p seems at least an option. Dr. Charles Smith, Bridgend
Dear Editor, I agree it was misguided for BCBC to close the toilets in John St. Porthcawl. The political wrangling involving BCBC and Porthcawl Town Council over who should be responsible for managing & funding the toilets could have been avoided, if BCBC had realised that many towns now charge people for using public toilet facilities. It would have been great if the John St toilets could have continued free of charge, but those days have gone. Richard Torkington‘s suggestion in the February edition of a 50p charge is eminently sensible. Bob Theil, Porthcawl

BOOK OF THE MONTH Lucifer Falls by Colin Falconer When a priest is found crucified in a derelict North London chapel, it makes a dramatic change for DI Charlie George and his squad at Essex Road. The brutal murder could not be further from their routine of domestic violence and stabbings on the estates. And that’s only the beginning ... On Christmas Eve, a police officer goes missing and his colleagues can’t help but anticipate the worst. It turns out they’re right to, when eventually the body is found and they discover he’s been stoned to death. As tensions rise, it’s up to Charlie and his team to venture into the city’s cold underbelly to try and find an answer to the madness... before anyone else dies a martyr’s death.

Local history ALEXANDER BROGDEN 1825-1892
JOHN STREET TOILETS RE-OPEN
The Brogden family originated from Sale, Manchester where they had already established a mining and railway company. In 1853 John Brogden purchased Tondu Ironworks; coalmines were sunk in the Ogmore Valley and by 1865 a rail track had been laid from Nantymoel to Porthcawl Dock, which under the supervision of younger son, James, had been developed at a cost of £250,000. In 1869, John died and, as the older son, Alexander took over the company. The year before, he had been elected as the Liberal MP for Wednesbury, which he maintained until 1885. In 1871, following a disagreement, James went to work in New Zealand, leaving Alexander in sole charge of a company which boasted of twelve collieries, nine blast furnaces and several forges and mills. Sadly, Alexander’s lack of business acumen and the collapse of the iron trade nationally, led to the company’s profits being eroded; to such an extent that eventually the coalmines were sold to North’s Navigation Collieries and the operating of the line and dock granted to the Great Western Railway. Whereas, James returned to develop the town we have today, Alexander was declared bankrupt in 1884. He died at his home in Croydon, aged 67 years. Ceri Joseph

Following a public outcry, Porthcawl Town Council took on the challenge of maintaining and reopening the John St toilets Porthcawl. The toilets were recently closed following a round of BCBC cut backs, PTC realising the impact of this loss of facilities to the town quickly provided a much appreciated temporary portable toilet located in the Well Street during the hand over process of taking control of the John Street toilets from BCBC. Today after preparation and cleaning Cllr Norah Clarke the mayor of Porthcawl formally reopened the toilet buy cutting the ceremonial toilet paper ribbon. The mayor was supported by volunteer members of the Porthcawl Museum who turned out in period costume to match the age and origins of the listed building. Key members of the town council were also in attendance, Cllr Clarke thanked all of those who helped make it possible and presented Cllr Jones with a amusing trophy and original artwork as a token of thanks for taking the lead in making the toilets available to the people of Porthcawl and all the many tourists and visitors that flock to the town throughout the year David Swidenbank

School reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL BRYNTEG NEWS
If you were lucky enough see our production of ‘Oliver!’ at the Grand Pavilion, you may have noticed the school Health and Wellbeing Committee collecting there on behalf of the Bridgend Foodbank. Thank you to everyone who brought in donations, we were absolutely overwhelmed by support from parents and families, and from the wider community as a whole. On 12 February, Tricia Davies from Bridgend Foodbank came to school to collect the donations. There were so many that far from being able to fit them into her car as planned, they had to be loaded into the school minibus to be taken to the Pyle depot! Your generous donation of 194.5 kgs enabled Bridgend Foodband to feed 41 people 3 meals a day for 3 days. Many congratulations to Mackenzie Jenkins (Year 9) and Max Slaughter (Year 10) for getting through to the regional final of the Future Chef competition at the ‘Classroom Restaurant’ in Cardiff and Vale College on 13 February. Along with 4 other competitors, they created a 2 course menu in an hour and a half within a set budget of £10. We are absolutely delighted to report that Mackenzie won the competition and was presented with a future chef regional finalist plate and a set of chef knives. He now goes on to the National finals in Westminster College for a two days all expenses paid trip for him and his family. Good luck! Andrew Slade Head Teacher

In January Brynteg School hosted a Sixth Form Careers’ Fair. We would like to thank the many local businesses who took part in the event. Our students were given valuable advice on various career pathways, advice and opportunities available and the event proved to be very successful. In February our Religion, Ethics and Philosophy department hosted a Sixth Form Revision Conference. We were very pleased to welcome Mr. Mark Lambe who has extensive knowledge and commitment with the subject. Mr. Lambe has worked in education for 20 years in various roles and he is an author of various text books. This revision conference was a wonderful opportunity for our Sixth Form students. In addition our year 7 pupils recently had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Phil Steele a Sports Broadcaster. He visited the school to talk about his experiences of dealing with mental well-being and the importance of exercise. Mr Steele’s talk was inspirational and our pupils thoroughly enjoyed. Jen L Davies Brynteg School Marketing & Communications
CYNFFIG NEWS
Following success in the Stranger Sagas competition and Poetry Escape, Cynffig pupils are again making their literary talents known. 133 pupils from Cynffig Comprehensive School have been selected to be published in an upcoming anthology, Mission Catastrophe: Welsh Tales. Year 11 pupils Tegan Walker and Josef Gray represented our Student Parliament at the Student Ambassador Conference Wales. They met with the Children’s Commissioner for Wales Sally Holland and attended workshops on promoting the rights
of children within school, gender equality and how to tackle cyber bullying in your school. This term our Cynffig Eco Club has made its biggest and best effort yet. Thank you to Matthew @ecoschoolsouth for his triathlon of events at our school; a Year 7 assembly, pupil workshops and a BIG pick of 9 bags of rubbish from our local community. Well done to all pupils involved together we can make a difference! Finally congratulations to Year 12 student Todd Murray who has been elected as Bridgend’s member for the Welsh Youth Parliament. Todd whose key issues are, Environmental Issues, Mental Health Issues, and Educational Issues has promised to listen to young people’s views ‘and represent and defend them passionately in the youth parliament.’ Hannah Castle Head teacher

As part of their Amazing Beasts projects, children aged 3 to 7 spent the day with Rita the dinosaur! Last week we held a fun packed Welsh Week. Children wrote poetry with a visiting poet, created stories with the U3A Porthcawl Writing Group, produced artwork with local visiting artists and cooked welsh cakes with family members. Traditional welsh dance was performed by a visiting dance group and our own talented dancers performed a modern dance. Our singing group and Criw Cymraeg sang and ate cakes with their new friends at Newton Care Home. On Friday we held our Eisteddfod which included music, dance, poetry and drama. Last St David’s Day we challenged ourselves to learn the national anthem within the year and were proud that this year we could end our Eisteddfod by standing to sing it together! Our Nursery Open Afternoon was well attended; it was great to meet so many lovely families. We are a small and friendly primary school set in huge grounds. We prioritise wellbeing and have excellent standards. Don’t worry if you missed the open day because we love showing new families around – just ring me on the number below to arrange a visit. February saw the arrival of 10 eggs down on the Early Years farm. The children learned how to keep the eggs safe and were delighted when all 10 hatched into beautiful fluffy chicks. The children displayed many of our school values; respect, responsibility, patience, loyalty and lots of happiness! They also carried out a Big Bird watch to discover what varieties of birds are living down in our very own Woodland. The Juniors carried out fantastic, experiential Seaquest workshops with Lewis Brown from National Marine Aquarium. They learned all about sea life, food chains and slime and made a pledge about plastic pollution in order to preserve our incredible oceans. Our Eco Committee did a wonderful job removing litter from the local streets and were astonished by the amount of rubbish they discovered. Year 4 also did their bit for the environment by trawling the shoreline at Rest Bay and safely disposing of debris discarded among the rocks. Across the school we carried out Safer Internet Day 2019 activities helping to raise awareness about e-safety. PC Nicholas Williams reinforced important rules and guidelines during pupil workshops and we have engaged with our families in an online survey in order to help us plan future e-safety awareness events. We are all looking forward to taking part in a Sponsored Walk at the end of the month to raise money for the NSPCC. We are also excited about some very special visitors who will be joining us for our Eisteddfod. More news next month! If you are deciding on a school for your child, feel free to contact us. We would be happy to answer your questions or give you a tour of our learning environment. West Park Primary
ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL We were once again privileged to be invited to a Memorial Day event at Bridgend College to remember those who were affected by the Holocaust, and subsequent genocides. The theme for this year’s event was “Torn from Home” and Year 9 students, accompanied by a member of the senior leadership team, listened to guest speakers talk of their personal experiences of such atrocities. Our prayers go out to the sufferers and their families. Over 30 students took part in the Abertawe Festival for Young Musicians and played in competitive classes and noncompetitive workshops as soloists, duos and small ensembles for internationally renowned adjudicators. Over 25 medals were won in total. Well done to all involved! We are very proud of them and pupils from our feeder school at Archdeacon John Lewis who achieved a Gold medal. Year 12 students Ffion Higginson and Devin Coombes represented the district in cross-country in Brecon and Ffion was delighted to be awarded the Bronze medal. Congratulations to both students! The school’s production of Mary Poppins, joined by year 5 pupils from our cluster schools, proved to be a great success and everyone enjoyed being part of this wonderful extravaganza. Thank you to all involved for the hard-work, dedication and commitment in making every evening such a success. Angela Keller Head Teacher

Nursery and Reception enjoyed a visit from Bridgend Reptile Centre. An assortment of creatures were brought to school for the children to observe and handle. They found out lots of information about what the creatures eat and the conditions that they need to be able to survive. They saw bearded dragons, cockroaches, corn snakes and a very colourful chameleon named Buddy. The highlight of the visit was seeing Nessa the Burmese python that was sixteen foot long. Many thanks to Bridgend Reptile centre for making the launch of our new class topics so enjoyable. The Criw Cymraeg play an active role in the life of the school and have visited nursery to play ‘Pwy wyt ti?’ games during break time. Pupils in Key Stage 2 have been chosen as ‘Ffrindiau Darllen’, which means they are able to visit Foundation Phase classes to read with pupils during wet breaktimes. Every week in assembly Criw Cymraeg set pupils the challenge of questioning others. Year 3 have signed up to the Bridgend Food Mission and are investigating how recycling food waste can produce electricity to power homes, schools and favourite places. They have used the Electro generator to calculate power hours and have designed a magic food machine. Yours sincerely N Pryce Head Teacher
THE BRIDGE This term there have been a lot of interesting events happening at The Bridge. The whole school attended an assembly for Internet Safety Day, to make pupils aware of the risks and safety of using the internet and social media. This relates to our Right of the Month article 16: The Right to Privacy. Congratulations Jaya White, our first KS4 student to play for Ospreys under 18s rugby. Already she has made a difference in her first game by scoring 4 tries. Well done Jaya. Miss Evan’s class recently visited Cardiff Museum to study different types of crystals. They are currently trying to grow their own crystals. KS2 and KS3 have started back at Forest School and have been testing their senses around the forest, using their sense of smell to find different smells in the forest. Pupils at Ks4 attended a ‘Hands On’ careers morning at Bridgend College. It was run by the National Autistic Society. They came away with a lot of information about the World of Work. Finally, we wish all the KS4 students good luck in their practical Science exams this week. Kia, Ashley, Harlie

NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL
It has been a very exciting term in Newton Primary School for the pupils in year 6. As part of our Cornerstones topic ‘Mods & Rockers’, we have studied the life and times of the 1960’s. We hired a specialist DJ and travelled back in time to a very enjoyable 60’s themed disco. We also hired a live singer to familiarise us with the music and brought in a professional dancer to help choreograph popular dances from this era. Pupils looked at the impact of ‘The Beatles’ on popular music and culture, writing interviews and biographies of famous people from the 1960’s. The pupils looked at the different genres of art from the time and designed their own ‘Pop Art’ inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. The highlight of the topic was when the pupils hosted and performed their own 1960’s style talent show! We had some tremendous acts including singers, dancers and musicians. We allowed our pupils to be creative contributors and express their own ideas through the medium of their own choice. Our pupils continue to embrace the new curriculum in an enjoyable, meaningful and enterprising manner. We are delighted to maintain our status as a Green Category school. H. Jenkins Year 5/6 teacher

Local news ANOTHER MONTH, ANOTHER BANK CLOSURE – OR SO IT SEEMS
BRINGING EMPTY PROPERTIES BACK INTO USE
This time, Barclays want to close their Porthcawl branch citing falling over-the-counter transactions as one of the reasons. Too many of us are using other branches or online banking. Porthcawl has already lost two bank branches in the past couple of years and if this closure goes through – and as was clear from my meeting with them they’re not changing their mind - Porthcawl will be left with one. And this time there’ll be no mobile alternative or locally available advice from this bank when it shuts its door. But there are wider implications from the loss of these banks. As each one closes, it’s one less reason to go into town. You can foresee a knock-on effect for the High Street. Action is needed. Welsh Government needs to adopt the more generous business rates relief advocated by my party and which is already enjoyed in England. But councils must also introduce strategic periods of free parking to lure us back from the internet and out-of-town retail parks where we can park for nothing. If nothing is done, footfall for all businesses including banks will decline creating Armageddon on our high streets.
I’d like to encourage readers to take part in our consultation on how the council and its partners can help to bring empty properties back into use around the county borough. Latest estimates suggest that there are 1,200 private sector homes in the area which have been lying empty for at least six months. Most are grouped around town centre areas, and more than 40 per cent have been empty for over two years. While the majority can be found around town centre areas, not all are in a state of disrepair, many are, which can give a poor impression of an area and deter investment. Some empty properties also attract anti-social behaviour such as graffiti, arson and fly tipping. A new strategy aims to bring them back into use by working with property owners and helping them to access grant funding for carrying out repairs and refurbishment. Where empty properties are a nuisance to the local community, the council will consider using legislative powers such as enforced sales, empty dwelling management orders, compulsory purchase orders and more. To find out more and have your say, complete the empty property consultation at www.bridgend.gov.uk/consultation before the deadline of 12 April 2019.

DON’T TRASH OUR TOWN It always annoys me that Bridgend County Borough Council has to spend around £2.5m every year dealing with litter. This is clearly money that could be better spent elsewhere, and all it would take is for more people to dispose of their rubbish responsibly. That’s why I was delighted to see children from five Porthcawl primary schools joining together recently to fight litter. The pupils, who were from Porthcawl Primary, Nottage Primary, West Park Primary, Newton Primary and St Clare’s School, completed a number of litter surveys, identified what could and couldn’t be recycled, carried out itemised clean-ups along the local coastline and compared the results. Topping their list of recovered items was plastic waste, including hundreds of bottle tops. With plenty of bins along the seafront and a successful household recycling service in place for plastic waste, there really is no excuse for this. The children are hard at work creating litter prevention slogans and posters which are being set up across the town, so please give them your support. The project was arranged in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, Porthcawl Town Council, Surfers Against Sewage and Sea Quest, and I’d like to thank both them and the children for their hard work. BANKING IN BRIDGEND Last month we learned that Barclays Bank in Porthcawl will close in May, another blow to ease of banking in the Bridgend constituency. I am meeting representatives from Barclays, with Cllr Huw David, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, to discuss the closure in coming weeks. This is just one aspect of the decline of banking accessibility in the constituency. Some ATMs in Bridgend, North Cornelly and Kenfig Hill will all start charging after interchange fees were cut at the beginning of the year. Currently, 82% of ATMs in the Bridgend constituency are free to use. This is above average for Wales, but this could change if we continue down the path of the ‘cashless society’. The reduction in free cash machines has been proved to affect people living in small towns and villages more than those in urban areas. In addition, the most deprived communities generally have fewer ATMs than those in the least deprived areas. This means that those least able to afford charges and those most likely to rely on cash transactions are the worst affected. Of course, small-scale economics move on, from the decimalisation of currency to contactless card payments, but businesses must ensure changes are implemented fairly and do not leave constituencies like ours behind. HARBOUR QUARTER PORTHCAWL Porthcawl is a beautiful town and making sure our beaches stay clean is important for everyone. SeaQuest and our volunteers have been doing just that with a number of Beach Cleans as well as the start of the ‘Porthcawl Love It, Don’t Trash It’ project in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, Porthcawl Town Council and BCBC. Thank you to everyone for their magnificent efforts. We’re also excited to announce that we are now members of the Institute for Outdoor Learning. This is great recognition for the whole team for the fantastic events and learning opportunities they are running. Our schools programme is going from strength to strength and our open events are attracting record numbers of participants. Did you join us for the Shark Discovery event at half term? A big thank you to the Interact group at Porthcawl Comprehensive School for their fundraising donation. We enjoyed finding out your views on science education and your ideas on how to inspire young people into science-based careers. We look forward to working with you in the future. MORE COASTAL DEFENCE WORKS PLANNED I hope you were able to attend the recent drop-in event at the Grand Pavilion where we revealed details about our plans for carrying out coastal defence works along the eastern promenade and Sandy Bay. Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it - full details are available at the council website. The work follows recent studies which revealed a number of improvements must be made to ensure we can continue to protect against coastal flooding and erosion. We want to undertake the work as part of our wider regeneration plans for Porthcawl and will be holding further drop-in events, so keep an eye out for more details soon. Elsewhere, the RNLI are recruiting lifeguards who will help to keep people safe during the 2019 season. Covering Rest Bay, Coney Beach, Trecco Bay and Pink Bay, the lifeguard service is provided in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council as having a professional lifeguard service in place helps ensure that our coastline remains a top tourist destination. Successful applicants will receive world-class training in search and rescue, lifesaving and casualty care techniques, good rates of pay and the chance to develop valuable skills for a future career. Poets corner YOU LEFT US WITH BROKEN HEARTS We asked, Why did you take them? When they were in their prime, You answered suggestively, That this was just their time ! You broke our hearts massively, Just by taking them like this, Without us saying our last goodbyes, Without any cwtches and a kiss. We are hurting beyond explanation, And now struggle with our beliefs, You take these loving caring people, But leave the druggies, rapists and thieves. Our hearts have been truly broken, Without any warning they have left, Gone to the world of spirit, Leaving us saddened and bereft. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend
DUMPED I’m losing such a lot this year it really isn’t funny My husband left, we’re selling our home and I haven’t got much money. He’s got a new woman, or so I’m told a nice new house or three Luxury trips and fancy cars but so much less than me! My two grown up sons who make me so proud though they both live far away But whenever I visit or if they call I smile through each dark day. Jacob squashes my face between his hands, just one game out of many! He looks me straight between the eyes and says “I love you Nanny”. While he’s eating out - Michelin stars, nothing less I’m with my grandsons, having a ball, in their local Pizza Express! I’ve got so many things right now that brighten up my life. Better by far than the last few years of being his bloody wife!! Karen, Porthcawl

THE STARLING AND ALUN THE WHIPPET While I walked along a wooded cobbled path, I saw on the ground a starling on its side, lifeless, such a sad sight, and sadly thought, parents or family would they ever know she, being of pink bill had died. No starling should suffer this indignity, to be left on this cobbled path. Where dogs, cats, and all manner of animals and insect stroll, and would suffer their intrusive wrath. I knelt down with a tear in my eye, gently cupped the starling in both hands, her body soft and still warm, which saddened me even more. I gently kissed her soft face, and looked for a secluded resting place, by clovers, wild tulips, this deserved of this starling, would fly no more. Suddenly I felt this gentle twitch, from her body, and then her eye opened slowly, closed then opened three times more. I cried with joy, and kissed her ever so gently four times more. I opened my hands slowly, and felt her getting stronger, I kissed her on her pink beak, and whispered, Fly up high and back to your family my special starling. She climbed slowly up my arm to my face, and softly kissed me on my check, and said, you too are my special Alun. Alun Davies, Porthcawl

SHOUT - DICES ON ICE Porthcawl’s Shout Forum members unexpectedly “diced on Ice” to get to the February meeting in Trinity church during the recent cold spell which briefly bought arctic conditions to Porthcawl. Helena Herklots, the Welsh Government’s new Older Peoples Commissioner was to give the monthly talk but overnight snow and ice presented a slippery problem. However following early morning discussions with her office on the known and unknown wintry conditions it was decided to cancel the meeting Membership officer Jeff rang and emailed people while chairman Rod and I went to Trinity to inform anyone brave enough to turn up. To our surprise around 20 people arrived to meet the commissioner including the Town Mayor, Cllr Norah Clarke, all unaware of the cancellation. An impromptu large circle forum took place debating Porthcawl’s “Hot Topics of Closed Toilets, Disappearing Buses and new Health Centre transport etc. The Mayor and Cllr Mike Clarke provided many answers to the concerns raised. Residents interested in what’s happening in Porthcawl are welcomed to our 2pm, first Friday of the month meetings at Trinity, which are normally snow and ice free. Our speaker for the March 1st meeting will give a talk on our forthcoming surrogate marriage to the Cwm Taf Health Board. Gary Victor Porthcawl Shout Forum
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hey folks, here’s the Good News the bible talks about: When the Son of God came to earth, we call it the incarnation. The word ‘incarn’ is actually a medical term and refers to patching a flesh wound over with healthy flesh or skin from somewhere else, therefore healing the wound. So when Jesus came as a man, in the incarnation, he started the healing process of broken humanity. Through his life and death as a human being he conquered the power of sin and evil and then through his resurrection he conquered death itself and established a new creation free from brokenness. Right now, Jesus is totally complete and enjoying the wonders of heaven. When we now have a personal relationship with Jesus, he shares with us all these amazing benefits of being restored and freed from the destructive things of this world. We also experience his joy and peace. We start to experience something of it now and will enjoy the fullness of it in eternity. In other words, Jesus becomes our healer! Now that’s good news. I would encourage you to explore a relationship with Jesus. Neil Harvey

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE NEWS
January saw the preparation and completion of various types of tool kits - building, carpentry and mechanics - for dispatch to Africa. At the end of January the Bridgend Group of TFSR visited the HQ at Netley Marsh, Southampton. One of the reasons for the visit was to give members the opportunity to have a tour of the facilities and be given an insight into the operation of the HQ. We were given a warm welcome by Ben Riley, Volunteer Coordinator, Stuart Bailey, Workshop Manager and other staff members. We had a very informative tour of the facilities and were introduced and spoke to other like minded volunteers. The other reason for the visit was to deliver our completed tool kits for their onward shipment to various training groups in Africa, together with boxes of donated haberdashery, sewing machines and other tools that were in short supply at HQ. The bulk of the consignment was transported from Porthcawl in a van supplied and driven by local businessman Bob Twitty of Mobility Scooters Porthcawl which was greatly appreciated. Various tools and equipment such as woodworking vices and large foot pumps, which were in short supply, were brought back together with supplies required for our workshop. It was a long day but one that was enjoyed by all. The group are now busy again with refurbishing tools for kits and for our, hopefully, forthcoming March sale of unwanted and excess tools for fund raising. If you have old tools of any kind you can contact us if you would like to deliver to our workshop or we can arrange collection. For further information please contact John on 01656 786367. The CDs are sent out by mail in padded wallets to anyone registered for the service and should arrive by the following day. The discs are not returnable, for they cannot be used again. However, listeners are asked to reverse the address label on the padded wallets and posting the wallet in any mailbox by the following Monday. There is no postal charge on the wallets. Anyone wishing to utilize the service should please contact: The Administrator, Mike Boyles, 17 Anglesey Way, Nottage, Porthcawl CF36 3QP, Tel. 01656 788 068 or mikewboyles70@email.com seaside news | 39
ABMU health board
Common Ailments scheme offers free over-the counter medicines Do you know about a new NHS scheme which provides over-the-counter and prescription medicines free of charge for a specific range of common ailments? Many of the minor ailments you don’t need to see a doctor for, but don’t want to pay for, can now be dealt with by your local pharmacy at no cost to you.
“One parent came with a child with head lice and they spread the word at school and then we had all the families coming in. One good result is that it has helped clear head lice at the school.“ Parent Leigh Matthews, 38, from Caerau Park, said:
The Common Ailments Scheme covers 26 minor conditions (listed below) and community pharmacies across the ABM University Health Board area – including Porthcawl, Bridgend, Maesteg, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea have signed up to it. Parents in the former mining village of Caerau near Maesteg say the new service has been a godsend in helping them to tackle an outbreak of head lice at the local school. Alex Duckett, pharmacist at the Village Pharmacy in Caerau, said:
Leigh Matthews, Parent “My five year old daughter got head lice and it was much easier to come here for treatment than trying to phone my doctor for an appointment, which can be very difficult. “I only live a five minute walk away so it is very convenient and I would definitely use the service again, for myself or my children.”
Alex Duckett, pharmacist 40 | seaside news
Gill Coles, a technician at the pharmacy, said: “It’s gone down well round here. Young families with head lice were paying £6.99 for one child’s treatment and a lot of people have three or four
children. It all adds up and can be a lot of money when you are on a budget. I would have been really grateful for it when I was young.”
As well as the usual over-the-counter medicines, pharmacists have also been trained to prescribe some prescription-only drugs like antifungals for mouth thrush or steroid creams for skin complaints, but they cannot prescribe antibiotics.
The Common Ailments Scheme has been devised to make use of pharmacists’ skills to help take some pressure off local GPs, who are struggling to meet patient demand for appointments. Pharmacists are highly trained, spending four years in university and another year working in a pharmacy before they can become registered.
“We started collaborating with the surgeries and they jumped at the idea straight away,” said Alex, the pharmacist. “In the past we have been overlooked in the rush to see a doctor but we do have the skills and tools to deliver the service to patients - we just have to get the message out to the public.” The scheme has proved so popular in Caerau that the pharmacy has taken on another technician to help run the dispensary so that Alex has more time to do consultations with patients.
The Common Ailments Scheme is available in all local 125 community pharmacies in the ABMU area. You have to register with the pharmacy to use the scheme, but the process only takes a few minutes. Consultations are carried out in a private room and if the pharmacist decides you still need to see a doctor, they will refer you. Conditions covered by the scheme are: Acne, athlete’s foot, back pain, chickenpox, cold sores, colic, conjunctivitis, constipation, diarrhoea, dry eyes, dermatitis, haemorrhoids, hay fever, head lice, indigestion, in-growing toenails, ringworm, mouth ulcers, nappy rash, oral thrush, scabies, sore throat, teething, threadworms, vaginal thrush, and verrucae.
“Providing this service is helping us build a rapport with patients and with the community generally. People are coming in more to ask our advice about their ailments and they are more trusting of our skills and knowledge. “This is the way pharmacy is going to go in the future, offering more services,” he added. “We already provide flu vaccinations, emergency contraception, smoking cessation schemes and medicine reviews.” seaside news | 41
Club features LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS
#LionsGetInvolved is the mantra by which Lions work is organised. Whether locally, nationally or internationally, we continue to make a difference to millions of lives. Who could possibly have thought that when the late Queen Mother (as Queen Elizabeth) sent her equerry to Canada with thanks for the help given to World War II orphans, it would have lead to the formation of the first Lions Club in the Great Britain. We are now are honoured to have HRH The Countess of Wessex as our Royal figurehead, carrying on this important patronage. In Porthcawl, we collect and recycle; respond to disasters and emergencies; help marshall local events, and even do a little running and swimming. All of this, to make a difference and create happy memories. Helen Keller, an American deaf-blind social activist is quoted as saying … ”Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much”. How true. At the heart of what we do, is the desire to get involved. Next time you visit social media, or are just quietly googling away, try using the hashtag #LionsGetInvolved. You’ll find ordinary people, doing extraordinary things. Perhaps you too will be inspired to Get Involved. Please do!!
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The whole ‘God thing’ would be a lot easier if we could just do away with the notion of ‘forgiveness’. I mean, achieving it can take a lifetime of trying. Also, it’s not as fun as holding a grudge, or as just smacking the person who wronged you in the face. Also, that person totally doesn’t deserve forgiveness. They deserve an eye for an eye! They deserve to feel bad forever! Also, it’s hard. On the other hand, doing away with the whole forgiveness requirement would make the whole ‘God thing’ a whole lot less, well, godly. You think forgiving someone who wronged you is hard? Try being Jesus and attempting to bring people back to God, and showing them how much God loves them, and getting killed for your troubles. Now, that’s hard to forgive. But we have been, and that is the good news on which the whole ‘God thing’ is built. You know what would make the whole ‘God thing’ a lot easier? Doing away with the whole forgiveness thing. But then, what would be the point? God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 518 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during the month of January. We monitored 6 incidents and dealt with a further 5 logged incidents involving paddle boarders, logs and 2 Mayday calls. We logged and monitored 138 commercial vessels, 222 leisure vessels, 1 military and 23 others. The yellow and red “RY” signal flags were hoisted 3 times during the month to warn marine traffic of the presence of open water swimmers (yes, even in January!) Our new CCTV system has been installed, tested and has proven to be a vital addition to our station. This latest technology provides us with coverage of both Newton Bay and Rest Bay, areas which were previously difficult to monitor. In a probable “UK first” for the station, secure CCTV links have also been provided for both HM Coastguard and the RNLI, allowing them to monitor live incidents which have been reported within those areas. Tickets are still available for our major fundraising event on Thursday, March 28th at the Grand Pavilion - a choral evening featuring Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir, their youth and children’s choirs and special guest soloist Charlotte Vaughan. Tickets are available from the Grand Pavilion Box Office Porthcawl. Nick Weedon, Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I separated from my husband six months ago and we are on reasonable terms and I wish it to remain this way. I have been told by friends that I can only file for Divorce regarding his behaviour or if he’s had an affair. I don’t want to do either.
CONSTRUCTION LAW SPECIALISTS FOR DEVELOPERS AND CONTRACTORS Legal Services Training Debt Collection Project Services 0117 422 0369 enquiries@quadrantr.co.uk www.quadrantr.co.uk
Answer: I am often asked this question by clients who wish to avoid the animosity which can arise when one party files for Divorce. Under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, in England and Wales, anyone seeking a Divorce must either prove their partner is at fault through Adultery, Behaviour or Desertion or if both parties agree after two years of Separation. In the absence of evidence of blame or consent to a Divorce after two years of Separation, the Petitioner must wait until they have been living apart for five years. However, no fault Divorces are to be introduced into law. The Justice Secretary David Gauke has confirmed that he will bring in legislation enacting the reform in the next session of Parliament removing the need for couples who are separating to allocate blame for the breakdown of their relationship or having to wait for years to Petition for Divorce. Clearly, the Justice Secretary’s commitment to the law change will spare couples the emotional stress and strain of citing blame or having to wait for a Separation period of two or five years. It is commendable that you wish to remain on good terms with your husband in particular if you have children who should be spared the pain of animosity. In light of your wish to remain civil, you may wish to await the changes in legislation or wait until you and your husband have been separated for over two years and seek his agreement to the divorce on this basis. CHANGES TO DIVORCE LAWS IN ENGLAND AND WALES Laws to enable couples to divorce quickly without apportioning blame are to be introduced within months. Last year, 110,000 couples divorced in England and Wales using a 50 year old law which has been condemned as being unfit for purpose and damaging to couples and children. The new system will avoid the need for a person to blame the other party and instead will allow couples to divorce by simply giving notice that a marriage has broken down irretrievably. As it stands, the current divorce law means that in order to achieve a divorce, one party has to cite the other’s unreasonable behaviour. This “blame game” often has the effect of increasing animosity at an early stage of the divorce process and in turn can have an adverse effect upon the ability of the parties to agree arrangements for the children or the settlement of finances. It has also been reported recently that thousands of people remain trapped in unhappy marriages because the other party refuses to respond to a divorce petition. Research has shown that in 14% of the divorces issued last year, one party refused to respond, and half of those cases failed to make it to decree nisi. It has been found that domestic violence or coercive control was more likely to feature in such cases. Therefore it is felt that the use of digital divorce systems will address this issue, by implementing a “divorce notification process” to provide proof of service. These changes will bring the process in England and Wales into step with Scotland and most other Countries in Europe and North America. Overhauling the divorce procedure will undoubtedly result in better outcomes for both parties and especially for children who can be adversely affected by the acrimony of their parents’ breakup. FEE INCREASES FOR GRANT OF PROBATE APPLICATIONS ANNOUNCED BY GOVERNMENT The Government are again pushing ahead with their plans to significantly increase probate application fees which will be calculated according to the value of the assets left by an individual when they pass away. This could result in the beneficiaries of some deceased estates paying up to £6,000 in probate fees. Whilst the increase in probate fees has been proposed by Government Ministers for some time, the matter was shelved prior to the last General Election amid criticism that the increase would effectively be an additional “death tax”. A Grant of Probate or Grant of Representation will be required by numerous institutions such as the Land Registry and banks and building societies when assets in an estate amount to in excess of £15,000 - £20,000. Without a Grant, the Executors/ Administrators are unable to access fund, sell shares, or transfer/ sell property especially when in the deceased’s sole name. Currently, those who apply for a Grant of Probate pay a one off fee of £155 if they instruct a solicitor to make the application on their behalf. The fee increases to £215 if an application is made by an applicant in person without the assistance of a solicitor. This does not differ depending on the value of the estate. To illustrate the increase in fees under the new proposals: For estates valued at: i. More than £2m will now pay a probate fee of £6,000, ii. Between £1.6m and £2m will pay a probate fee of £5,000, iii. Between £1m and £1.6m will pay a fee of £4,000. iv. Between £500,000 to £1m the probate fee payable will be £2,500 v. Between £50,000 to £300,000 the probate fee will be £250. vi. Less than £50,000 will not incur a probate fee. The new fee system is likely to be introduced as of April 2019. We therefore recommend that those who are currently administering deceased estates make every effort to submit their applications to the Probate Registry as soon as possible to keep costs down. We are happy to assist in making those applications. It may also be beneficial for individuals to speak to us regarding their own Will and lifetime planning which may assist in reducing the probate fee payable upon their subsequent death. Advice regarding lifetime planning may also assist in mitigating an individual’s inheritance tax liability. Business & finance ARE YOU A ‘MORTGAGE PRISONER’?
WHAT IS INCOME DRAWDOWN?
So are you? The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Parliament are starting to address the very concerning situation of people whose mortgage is either with a company that has gone out of business (e.g., Bradford & Bingley, Northern Rock or Mortgage Express to name just three) and has been taken over by a mortgage administration company, on an unfavourable interest rate, preventing you from moving to another lender or whose lender simply won’t offer a new deal. Or you could be stuck on an ‘interest-only’ mortgage with no way of repaying the money that you owe the lender. Age may also mean that you are coming close to not being able to get another mortgage. Well, if that is YOU, you MUST act and we are here to offer you help to get out of that predicament, where there are options for you. If you don’t, the lender WILL come for their money sooner rather than later, putting your home at risk. We cannot guarantee to get a result every time because you may still fall down on affordability or another issue, however, there’s only one way to find out and that is by confronting the issue NOW. So, DO NOT despair – give us a call and we’ll approach all suitable regular and specialist lenders that DO have a policy of offering a new mortgage facility and eventual solution, to people just like you. Even if your credit history is not perfect, there are sympathetic lenders that specialise in helping you get back ‘on track’, providing of course, that you’re sensible about it and can demonstrate that you are willing to make a start on ‘getting things sorted’. It would seem that the number of people who are STILL on their lender’s Standard Variable Rate (SVR) runs into millions and these people are losing money simply because they don’t realise that better deals are available. Nobody would surely want to pay more than they need to, would they? All you have to do is pick up the phone and run your situation by us. We can then take a good look for you – many people do this and we can help them save thousands of pounds in payments over a two to five year period, or longer. Call 01656 782545 for an informal chat, free of charge and free of obligation.
Income drawdown is where you leave your pension pot invested and take a pension income directly from it instead of using the money to buy an annuity. As your pension pot remains invested it will continue to benefit from any investment growth. Since pension reforms were introduced in April 2015, more and more retirees have opted to take flexible withdrawals from their pension funds and the Financial Conduct Authority has reported that drawdown has become much more popular than annuities. Whilst drawdown offers greater flexibility there are risks that you need to be aware of. Unlike an annuity the amount you could draw, as income isn’t guaranteed. Your pension fund remains invested which means that you are exposed to market movements. This makes it even more important to take good independent professional advice as without it you might set your income level too high and you might risk running out of money too soon. Your financial advisor should have a ‘cash-flow analysis’ tool to check how long your pension could last. In Drawdown you can take monthly income or just lump sums as and when you need funds, this can be organised around any other pensions you have so as to mitigate tax, you can’t do this with an annuity. Whilst it’s no longer obligatory to take an annuity at retirement, they still have benefits to offer. It’s possible to put a portion of your pension pot into an annuity and leave the rest in drawdown to get the best of both worlds. Just remember once you buy an annuity there is no going back but you can move from drawdown to annuity anytime. Drawdown funds will transfer to your beneficiaries on death, spouse, children or grandchildren but annuities can die with you. This is one of the main reasons why drawdown will remain popular, as you are able to retain wealth within your family. Whatever options you take it’s important to seek independent financial advice. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS
Our club celebrates the arrival of spring with a get together on St. David’s Day. This follows on from our last get together in February to celebrate the Chinese New year. This was a wonderful feast organised and prepared by a small team from the Ladies section. We are a sociable bunch of folk – but it is not all partying as we are busy in our greenhouses getting ready for the annual plant sale fund raiser which is scheduled for the 4th May. We are also in the process of developing a Resource Centre for our members. It is work in progress at the moment so more on this at a later date! Our monthly talks have been very interesting with useful advice on greenhouse growing and interesting information on wildlife. As the days gradually get longer the pace of the developing spring steps up a notch. This is when we find out how the bulbs we planted last autumn are doing. It is also an ideal time to plan the planting schemes for the year ahead. New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk or email EnqLGC@gmail.com Joyce Pegg
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB By mid-March we’re ready to welcome the start of spring, a happy hopeful time for us gardeners. Time to start the slug patrol – pay special attention to soft new growth, it a gourmet dinner for slugs, there’s nothing they like better the little loves! Cut back the remains of last year’s perennials and give your flower beds a good spring clean (never mind the house!) Its perfect time to wrinkle out weeds, but remember if you are mulching, perennial weeds will do all the better for it! A good way of killing weeds is to put vinegar on them; it kills the weeds without destroying the environment (an eco-friendly weed killer –sounds good to me) It’s a good idea to put new bags of compost into the greenhouse to warm up before you start sowing. Joy of Joys – time to start mowing again! Did you know- there are 25,000 varieties of Daffodil, they are the most hybridized flower in the world. Don’t display them with other flowers though as their sap is highly toxic to other blooms! According to legend if you see the first daffodil you will have wealth bestowed on you for 12 months! Health & wellbeing MEDITATION The flu hit me last month. It ended after five days on the sofa. It gave me a lot of time to contemplate this fragile body that we call ‘me’. How did I orientate my meditation practice to this event? One of the actions that I engaged in, was the ignoring of thoughts and the attention to bodily feeling. For days I observed the internal change of heat within the body, mild pain and how illness takes away the sharpness of the senses. Mindfulness is weak when we are ill and so large internal events are easier to focus on and subtle happenings difficult to know. As the heat within the body changed, it was simply noting the impermanence that was the practice. This noting brought about a time of quiet. In such quiet, there was a shift from worrying thoughts such as ‘When am I going to get better, I haven’t got time to be ill, why me’. Focusing on the body experience stopped those mental proliferations. Seeing healing and compassion arise. The body heals itself, without our will, this is truly remarkable. We assist in the support, but the system does this without our say so. Family came to my assistance. Even my youngest child at aged four wanted to help. I noticed how my Jack Russell sat closer to me and nuzzled in. Being ill for a period of time, but there was no suffering. Compassion brought about the consideration for others, who are also ill. Even when ill, there can be powerful moments of a mind that is full of radiant qualities. I think it is important to remember that we can cultivate these mind states whatever our circumstances. KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE DAY
Let Rotary check your blood pressure. Saturday, 13th April is ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Day’ and the Rotary Club of Porthcawl together with the Stroke Association will be offering free blood pressure checks from 10am to 4pm at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. Tests will be administered by health professionals who are fully trained to identify potential problems and advise on appropriate action. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to over half of all strokes. These strokes may well be prevented if high blood pressure was controlled. Often high blood pressure shows no symptoms and many people are unaware that they have it. Routine blood pressure screening in the community is very valuable in detecting it. So please call in, take the test, and know your blood pressure. Robert Lee 54 | seaside news

SUNSHINE & VITAMIN D
COST OF CANCER
Researchers call for an immediate revision of public health recommendations on sun exposure, noting that “non-burning UV exposure is a health benefit and — in moderation — should be recommended as such” The public has been misled and misinformed about the health ramifications of sun avoidance, as there are significant hazards associated with vitamin D deficiency, including a heightened risk of heart disease and several cancers, especially internal cancers but also lethal skin cancer. Sensible sun exposure is the most effective way to optimise your vitamin D level. Sun exposure also has health benefits beyond vitamin D production that help lower your risk of chronic disease and death. When you’re deficient in vitamin D, your health can deteriorate in a variety of important ways, because your cells require the active form of vitamin D to gain access to the genetic blueprints stored inside the cell. I cannot believe I’m writing the March issue already. It’s quite scary at how fast time is ticking along. We’ve got a very busy few months coming up and some of the events we desperately need volunteers for. Below are the events we need help for: Bag packing in the Co-Op in Porthcawl 6th April 15th June More dates to follow for bag packing We need volunteers for the following events Melodies in Margam – 13th April Charity Ball – 11th May Carnival – 20th July Valley to Coast Walk – 10th August Please do get in touch if you have a spare couple of hours to help us. The more helpers we have the better the event becomes and the more money we can raise which in turn allows us to help more people We’ve also got the Friday night quiz throughout the month of March at the Seagull. It’s such a fab night and a bit of fun. So hopefully we can see you down there. We were recently presented with a cheque from the CoOperative alongside Ty-Elis Counselling, and Porthcawl First Responders for the bag packing we did and also the quiz nights in Jan and Feb. So, thank you to those who have helped and supported us. Don’t forget if you know anyone currently going through treatment for cancer, point them in our direction as we’re here to help with the financial side that having cancer has on families. Speak to you all soon Nicky, Emma & Cath Cost of Cancer Trustees

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
Mr John Bridge has very kindly given me permission to showcase my local history films in the window display of his shop, Stationery Hill, at the town end of New Road, next door to the Prince of Wales public house. So when you are out and about doing your daily shop and passing by, you are more than welcome to take a little peek at whichever of my films is showing, as they are being screened in rotation and include “A History of Porthcawl, Newton and Nottage” and “Porthcawl Past & Present” as well as “The Restoration of Sker House” and “Kenfig”. Also being shown are films about Bridgend, Maesteg and Port Talbot, and DVD copies are on sale in the shop, amidst the paper, pens, inks and all your other stationery requirements for the office and home. So next time you think of popping in, spare a few extra minutes to see a little of the area’s fascinating history. For those of you who are interested in film, there will occasionally be items of film-making equipment on display inside the shop, and a chance to talk to me about how the films came to be made. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
Porthcawl drummer Terry Thomas sadly passed away last month after fighting his illness with great courage, determination and his customary bags of humour. Even when he got respite from hospital, he’d somehow get on his drum kit at a jam night. Years ago Terry was a fan of American hit singer/songwriter Dean Friedman and I got us backstage as Dean’s tour manager was also mine! Terry was best known as a member of Chartered Hurricane, Sex and The Guzzards. RIP, TNT! I was also saddened by the death of Cornelly’s Mike Stonehouse. He and his lovely wife Linda ran the Patsy Cline Fan Club and did a lot for local communities. Mike, a fab friend and a loving family man, will be very much missed. Some dates now for your music diaries: 14th March, Rebecca Hurn album launch at Cardiff’s Big Top; 22nd March, Porthcawl RFC charity band night – help Kellie Marie Morgan-Rowe reach her fund-raising target. Ticket price includes curry, rice and chips, sounds good; 23rd March, Northern Soul Night at the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl featuring Nigel Graham and top soul DJs Sean Chapman and Chris Ward. Keep your calls coming. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Dean Friedman (left) and Terry Thomas (right)
PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Club Competition Two, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Alan Stokes from Bridgend judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was David Jones with ‘Gardener’s World’ The winner of the Digital Trophy was Geoff Baker with ‘Catch of the Day’ Congratulations to both David and Geoff. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal. So if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk
MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR It has been a busy few months for the choir and we are now well into rehearsing some new numbers to add to our repertoire. “When We Were Young” by Adele has proved really popular with the choir as has the Abba compilation. The choir recently adopted Contact the Elderly to be their charity for the year. Last year we were able to present the Alzheimer’s Society with over £500 and we would hope to be able to raise a similar amount for this year’s charity. A percentage of what we raise through concerts and a designated charity concert help make up the amount. Our project Make us Forty is ongoing with numbers in the choir gradually building. As it is our 40th anniversary this year it would be lovely to get to the 40 members or more by the end of the year. You may see us out and about with our publicity stand if you do come up and say hello. If you enjoy singing and were thinking of joining a choir then come along to one of our practices on a Thursday evening at 19:15 in Pencoed Bowls Club and see what you think, warm welcome guaranteed.

The curtain has closed on The Grand Pavilion pantomime for another year but the venue are already looking forward to their 2019 production which will be the ‘fairest panto of them all’, Snow White. The reputation of the Grand Pavilion pantomime has grown over the last few years with the venue priding themselves on providing a high-quality production at affordable prices. Having broken box office records last year they were delighted to once again smashed targets with more than 17,000 people from the local area attend the panto over the festive period. Richard Hughes, Chief Executive of Awen Cultural Trust said “we are delighted that Sleeping Beauty proved to be such a great success. We were exceptionally proud of the production and of all the talented people who brought it to life.” Steve Boden from Imagine Theatre who produce the panto says “It may only be February but plans for Snow White are already underway. Panto does take a lot of planning, from working out schedules and designing artwork to choosing sets and costumes, and of course the casting. For the majority of people panto is just for Christmas but for us it is all year round!” Snow White is on sale now and runs from Friday 13 December 2019 until Sunday 5 January 2020. With many of the performances selling out each year it is advised that you booked as early as possible for this fairy tale production. Sport reports THE NEW CLUB ON THE BLOCK – INTRODUCING BRIDGEND SWIM CLUB
SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT Spring is in the air and the Daffodil shoots are springing up. Here at Ogmore by sea there were Daisy’s and Dandelions even in January. The water isn’t that mild though but not as cold as it can get. We have had varied surf here on the coast mostly at around 2 to 3 ft whilst to the West at Porthcawl its quiet a bit bigger. The surf beaches have had plenty of un ridden waves as the number of surfers this winter seems to have dropped off here at Ogmore by sea and Southerndown. A memorable 2 days was in the middle of February with warm spring like weather, Blue skies sunshine and a brisk offshore breeze. The surf was 3ft and 4ft on bigger sets with about 8 surfing at Southerndown and 15 in at the River mouth. As well as spring flowers being apparent in winter months we have great evidence of the Ogmore River getting much cleaner than it ever was in that there are now regular sightings of Otters in the estuary. Who knows, one day they maybe frolicking in the surf at the River mouth come summer time. I’ll put them up online if I manage to film it. My YouTube Channel. David Anthony Batten
NEW LOOK RUNNERS SMASH IT
Bridgend Swim Club is a newly established Swimming Club providing a fun, inclusive, challenging and performance environment for swimmers. In early 2018 Olympic triathlete Helen Jenkins MBE along with husband Marc, senior swimmers, and the majority of local performance swimmers formed a new swimming club for the people of Bridgend County. In her recent blog Helen commented “I so am proud of the work that has gone in to setting up the new Bridgend Swim Club. Bridgend County Borough Council, Halo, club members, coaches and others have put in so much effort and their aspirations are to support the membership and the local area. It is inspiring to see all those who have supported the club come together and create something with such a great environment, allowing kids to enjoy sport with no pressure at a young age but giving them opportunity and a platform to become great athletes if that is their goal, or just carry on enjoying sport and swimming for the rest of their lives”. As a new club we have already attended the recent South East Wales competition, with great numbers attending, with fantastic team spirit and all had an enjoyable time. We are actively recruiting new members to the club. If you are interested in joining this exciting and inclusive club, please email bridgendswimclubmembership@gmail.com

It’s not just race PBs that are being smashed by the Porthcawl Runners – the ever-growing club has also set a new record for its membership. With a steady flow of new members joining in January, the club achieved a new high of 142 signed up by the end of January, with 87 female and 55 male members. That figure also already exceeds last year’s record total of 133 with another month still to go until annual subs are renewed in April. With an increased coaching capacity and another C25K programme on the way, the Runners look set to soon break the 150 barrier and that continual increase goes hand in hand with an exciting new club rebrand launched last month – including a new logo design that will soon appear on club vests. There is also a new public Facebook page and a revamped website. Check it out at www.porthcawlrunners.com Congratulations to Dave Bennett on bagging the title of parkrun male points winner for 2018, following on from clubmate Will Edwards in 2017, while Deb Roberts retained her title as parkrun female points winner. Also to Romana Maine, who was the Bridgend County Running League over 55 female winner. Carl Field

PORTHCAWL SQUASH CLUB REMEMBERING PETER STRADLING This month’s report is dedicated to former Porthcawl Squash Club player and Welsh international Peter Stradling. Peter recently passed away at the age of 52. All at our club were devastated to hear of this very sad news and our thoughts and prayers go out to Peter’s wife Caroline and children Joe, Sam and Lucy. Peter started playing squash at Porthcawl with his father Tony and brother David in the 80’s. Within a short time it was evident Peter was blessed with special talent and determination to compete against the very best of players. As a young teenager, Peter represented Porthcawl A team, when competition at the club was at a premium with its 300 members. Peter soon caught the eye of the Welsh setup and was invited to join the Welsh Under 16 team. Peter proudly became Porthcawl’s first squash international. Peter progressed and improved on his growing talent, maintaining his international status through to the Welsh Under 19 team. Peter played at the highest level, sharing the court with a certain Jahangir Khan - 8 times World Champion.
REST BAY LIFEGUARD
SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB Welcome to the Nipper Section Our club’s Nipper section (Age 8-13) has over 80 children. As a Nipper your child will be taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills, surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, boardpaddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays).
The emphasis is on fun in a friendly environment. During winter we also run lifesaving training sessions at local pools. We also take part in the various competitions in which teams and individuals can participate – However no child is forced to compete. The children also work towards various national surf safety awards, which include both sports and lifesaving elements.
Now recruiting
Rest Bay Nippers are now recruiting boys and girls born 2006-2011. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have loads of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.
Have fun, learn lifesaving skills and build friendships for life.
Peter was a humble man, few people would have known of his ability and achievements from Peter himself. He was also a very proud family man and it’s wonderful to see Peter’s sporting talent living on through Joe, Sam and Lucy - all gaining Welsh caps in Basketball. Peter will be greatly missed. REGIONAL SUCCESS FOR BRIDGEND COUNTY SWIM SQUAD
BRIDGEND SWIM SQUAD swimmers spent two weekends at the beginning of February competing in Newport at the South East Wales Regional Championships against swimmers from City of Cardiff, City of Newport, Torfaen Dolphins and RCT Performance Squad among others resulting in a high level of competition. The swimmers work incredibly hard and were rewarded with some amazing swims and nearly every Bridgend Swimmer achieved a personal best. In total the squad achieved 71 finals, 166 top ten placings and 61 medals made up of 18 golds, 19 silvers and 24 bronzes. Our new coaches entered the squad (for the first time in a very long time) in all the relays in all of the age groups achieving great success and a further 14 medals. The swimmers showed amazing team spirit in supporting and cheering for each other and celebrating every success together. Bridgend County Swim Squad is a Swim Wales Performance Centre developing swimmers from Wave 6 and 7 of swimming lessons to Elite Level, it is a friendly squad catering for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Also a big Thank You must go to Arena for believing in Bridgend County and sponsoring our lovely new kit, the only club in Wales to be sponsored by Arena! If you would like more information please contact bcssmembership@bridgendcounty.co.uk
