‘LIL ALFIE’ - A BOY WORTH RUNNING FOR TURN CLUTTER INTO LIFE-CHANGING CASH Dear Editor, Last March, four pupils from YGG Llangynwyd won the First Give Competition - receiving £1000 for their chosen charity. They chose ‘The Lil Alfie Foundation’. Alfie Jones has an imbalance of chromosomes 11 and 15. He is the only boy in the world with this condition and his life is very difficult. Despite his adversities Alfie is constantly smiling. Last month, the girls were invited back to Alfie’s home to see how the money they won has helped. Alfie’s parents have been able to purchase ‘Eye Glaze’ software, hopefully enabling Alfie to communicate with them, to be able to tell them when he is hungry, thirsty etc. He uses the software via his eyes so by looking at certain things he creates different actions. The girls have been so inspired by Alfie that they have arranged to run the 5k Gung Ho event in Cardiff this May. There will be 10 of them in total. They are hoping to raise money to help with the costs of a new wheelchair. If you would like to sponsor the girls and help raise money for the phenomenal Alfie Jones please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/littlealfierun. Dear Editor, Have you ever chuckled at Michael McIntyre’s comic diatribe on the foreign currency that lurks in our kitchen drawers? With spring approaching, it’s a good time to clear out those obsolete coins and notes. The charity Guide Dogs is appealing for donations of French francs, Spanish pesetas, Dutch guilders, Italian lira – any currency is welcome and could help us to run our vital services. It doesn’t have to be foreign currency, either. Old pennies or threepenny bits can be especially valuable to us, particularly if they were minted in key years. So clear out your clutter, and we’ll turn it into life-changing cash. It costs £55,000 for the lifetime of a guide dog, and we rely on donations to keep our services running. You can post coins and notes in a padded envelope to Guide Dogs, Eastern Business Park, St Mellons, Cardiff, CF3 5EA, or simply pop it into any Guide Dogs collecting box. For more information, ring our office on 0345 143 0195 or email cymru-mt@guide dogs.org.uk Frank Greig Community Fundraising Development Officer Guide Dogs Cymru

Is your conservatory too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter? A solid tiled conservatory roof regulates heat better than the usual UPVC roof panels on most conservatories as they are better insulated.

EMYR’S KARAVAN4THEKIDZ SUPPORTS VELINDRE We want to reach the £40,000 target

Fantastic news, we have now raised GET £40,000 TAR over £37,000 - thank you so, so, so much to you kind people who have raised or donated recently - great effort and very generous! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. Velindre and Latch have started purchasing equipment for the children at the hospital; such as an interactive board/42” TV, iPad, laptop, magic carpet projector, mood lighting pod, teenager cubicle - so please keep fund raising and donating - the more we raise, the more they will have whilst they are having treatment. Also congratulations to all those taking part in the 100 day challenge of running/walking 2 miles a day whilst raising money and getting fit. Thank you Sian and Ceri Williams. Thank you to the shops in Porthcawl who have been raising funds through displaying Latch collection boxes. Please contact Sandra Owen if you could display one and ask for donations in lieu carrier bags. Emyr’s Bike ride - Brecon to Pyle ‘Riding to Remember’ on Sunday 27th May £20 entry fee & sponsorship. Limited numbers so register ASAP with Sandra Owen, Lisa Hier, Mike Sims, Doug Burgess or Gary Walford. For more information please visit our website: http://www.emyrskaravan4thekidz.co.uk/ Or call 07900 493697. We can MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Thank you xxx Sandra, Kevin and Huw Owen, Paul Downes and Christian Evans

All these books and many more are available free of charge from the Library. But did you know it isn’t just books we offer, we also lend DVDs, talking books and micro:bits. A micro:bit is a pocket- sized computer that can be coded, customized or controlled to bring digital ideas to life. The micro:bit can be borrowed free of charge, for three weeks just like a library book.

Last month, we celebrated Fantastic Beasts at our Harry Potter Book Night, during which the children enjoyed a number of Harry Potter themed events including being sorted into houses, creating spectacles and hearing from Mrs Weasley, who turned up with her pet niffler. Congratulations to Ravenclaw who won the House Quiz. From March 8th on Thursday mornings we are starting a Knit and Natter group at 11am, which will be a chance to bring your knitting, and chat with others in the comfy surroundings of the Library. This month, we are holding a very special bilingual children’s event Blodyn & Tatws with Lala productions on March 10th and on March 24th we are exploring space with local author Pat Roper. Both free events are at 2.30pm. To find out more, please contact us at the Library. You can also follow Porthcawl Library on Facebook. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service

is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Stormy Down, North Cornelly, South Cornelly, Kenfig, Mawdlam, Margam Village, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribwr, Pen-y-Fai, Laleston, Broadlands,

Whiterock, Brackla, Coity, Bryntirion & Bridgend town centre and Welsh business owner Phil Powell agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Local history WARTIME BRIDGEND

Return visit of Winston & Monty to Bridgend Town Where: Bridgend Town Centre (Dunraven Place & Wyndham Street) When: Saturday 16th June 2018, 10am - 4pm. After the remarkable success of the first Wartime Bridgend event last June, Bridgend Town Council is pleased to announce that the second Wartime themed event will take place on Saturday 16th June 2018. This year is a special year in military terms with the centenary of the cessation of the First World War, and the centenary of the Royal Air Force being established. It will also see the completion of the Military Heritage Walkway in Bridgend Town Centre; and the ‘Street Soldier’ silhouette initiative in three locations to mark WW1. At the first event, the Spitfire replica aircraft in Dunraven Place was a huge attraction – and this year it is planned to display another historic aircraft - details to be revealed. Over 30 display stalls have been booked and a 1940’s Heritage style street market is being planned. Winston Churchill and Monty will be on hand to rally the forces and George Formby and other entertainers will be boosting spirits and morale. A Home Guard ‘Dad’s Army’ group of re-enactors will be displaying their ‘skills’ and enigma code breaking will be explained in detail. Children will be fascinated by the school life period games and lessons – and Mr Punch will be on hand to show Mr Hitler where he gets off in traditional British entertainment style. Bridgend allotmenteers will be ‘Digging for Victory’ and military vehicles will be on display in abundance – and much, much more! Event coordinator, Cllr. David Unwin, stressed that Saturday 16th June should go down in everybody’s diary as a date not to be missed.

PORTHCAWL COASTWATCHERS TOWER

Taking a walk near the harbour, you often pass the National Coastwatchers Tower. The National Coastwatch Institution, which was set up in 1994, now operates over 50 stations across the UK. In May 2016 the Porthcawl Branch was officially opened. Yet, I expect, few know of the watchtower’s early history. Built in c1870 alongside a signal station, it was originally used by HM Coastguard Porthcawl, until the 1960’s. During WW1, it was used by a newly created Porthcawl Volunteer Coast Intelligence Department, under Chief Officer John David of Eastnor House, to patrol the coast from the mouth of the Ogmore River in the east, to Kenfig in the west; looking out for German Vessels in the Channel. As more men were called to war, the watch was taken up by boy scouts. It was during this time that the building had its first renovations. It was fitted with the latest instruments, including more efficient telescopes and a telephone. In 1919, the Porthcawl Council applied for a captured German submarine to be placed near the harbour to attract tourists. The War Office sent a German cannon, which ironically was removed during WW2, and said to have been melted down to make Spitfires.

A total of 53 air crew were also lost at Stormy Down, including men from Britain, Poland, Canada and New Zealand. Robert Taylor brings the past to life with photographs and stories of a site which only recently has been formally recognised by officials for the important role it played in WW2 FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS through a commemorative plaque. School reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

CORNELI PRIMARY In this half term, keeping safe has been at the forefront. Year 5 & 6 children listened to a thought provoking talk about the dangers of playing on or near railway lines and disputes amongst the children can now be resolved by Peer Mediators, following their training. Year 2 children, after weeks of practising road safety, proudly received their Kerbcraft certificates and an Internet Safety Day was an opportunity to highlight and discuss how the children use the internet and social media and ways that this can be done safely and securely. We welcomed into our nursery children who are ‘Rising 3’ years old and they have settled in well. We were also delighted that the Director of Education, Mr Lindsay Harvey, came to our Story Café and gave a most enjoyable story reading to our Reception class children and their parents. The Year 5 & 6 theme is Olympics and thanks to a workshop from Dance Maniax, the children had great fun exercising by dancing energetically. There are certainly some dance stars in the making! The theme in our Foundation Phase classes is Dragons and a very large and mysterious egg has appeared. We await the hatching with excitement and a little trepidation! Sue Jones

SAFER INTERNET DAY

“Green A” this is how the Welsh Government have categorised Porthcawl Comprehensive; the highest category a school can be placed in and naturally, we are delighted. Reaching the top category has taken much hard work from the learners, their teachers and parents and carers. Thank you to everyone who came to see our 40th show, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ at the Grand Pavilion. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the public response and inundated with letters, emails, cards and telephone calls in praise of the show. Your words of encouragement have meant so much to the staff and pupils involved, and we appreciate you taking the time to express them in this way. Thanks also to everyone who supported the show; helping children fulfil their commitments, giving up time to help and by advertising in our show programme. Without you there would be no show! Pupils are now practicing hard for the Eisteddfod which takes place on Friday 2nd March, again at the Pavilion. Also coming up on 13th March is our Awards Evening at school, where pupils are recognised for their efforts over the previous academic Russell Skellern year. We are looking forward to BA(Hons) welcoming parents and carers as RWCMD well as representatives from the Graduate of community who are affiliated Guitar to some of these awards. Pupils at Pil Primary School played an active role in promoting the ‘Create, Connect and Share Respect’ message of this year’s Safer Internet Day. The Digital Leaders displayed posters in every class to remind pupils to be SMART in their use of the internet. Pupils watched a SID18 promotion video, listened to an internet safety rap and took part in many engaging activities including making a pledge jigsaw. The Digital Leaders felt the day was a huge success and pupils learnt lots through assemblies, activities and online clips. For more information visit: www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2018 Year 6 Transition Year 6 attended a Science Transition day at Cynffig Comprehensive on Wednesday 7th February, where they investigated the energy levels of food as part of their Going for Gold transition project. school reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL, PORTHCAWL

St Clare’s School in Newton on the outskirts of Porthcawl is celebrating its 80th anniversary with an evening at the HiTide, Porthcawl. Readers will be delighted to learn that Sisters Mercedes, Mary, Angela, Ailbe, Joanne and Chrissie will all be returning for this special event. Today St Clare’s is a nonselective, independent day school for boys and girls aged 3 to 18 and part of the Cognita group, a growing family of 68 schools, in 7 countries with over 30,000 students worldwide. Back 1932 Reverend Canon James of Newton invited the Sisters of St Clare from Newry, Northern Ireland, to open The Sacred Heart School, a secondary day school for girls in their new convent at The Clevis, Newton, Porthcawl. However in May 2006 the Sisters of St Clare took the decision to retire and the school was sold to Cognita and the name became simply St Clare’s School. The special anniversary evening will start at 6:00pm on Saturday, 21st April, tickets on sale from the Hi-Tide at £12.50 each. Please telephone Julie on (01656) 782432 or email her at Hightideinn1@aol.com The school will be open for tours on the day before and the morning after. Simon Antwis Head Teacher

A THIRD ECO FLAG FOR CEFN CRIBWR PRIMARY The Eco Council at Cefn Cribwr Primary are delighted at having achieved our Third Eco Award and Green Flag. We have been working hard all year in different areas so we become more environmentally friendly, such as recycling 100% of our paper and saving energy. We would like to thank the whole school for participating in our Healthy Living Scheme by supporting our initiatives such as walking to school. Thank you to Matthew Bunt for presenting us with our flag. He stated that, “by keeping on with what you are doing you will win your fourth Eco Award!” Our next phase is to develop an orchard and wild flowers to increase the biodiversity of the school. Dylan and Erin The School Council has been hard at work designing a new play area and equipment for the grounds in conjunction with BCBC that is safe for all our pupils. We have also been creating two new pupil questionnaires; one to find out our attitudes to school life, and the second to find out how effective is our teachers’ marking. Aaliyah and Ellie

CYNFFIG SPRING NEWS

NEWTON PRIMARY

This term our nursery has been busy welcoming our newest and youngest pupils. Our rising threes attend on a part-time basis and have all settled really well. They are already enjoying our hands on, stimulating learning activities. Choosing the right school for your child can be an emotional decision. As parents and carers you are the first and most important educators. Here at Newton Primary we aim to develop positive relationships with families as we support every child in their first steps beyond the home. It is our intention to develop a positive attitude to learning by consistently focusing on the child’s strengths and achievements. We believe that paramount to a child’s happy and healthy development is a caring and warm environment, in which they feel confident to express themselves. Thus building selfconfidence and developing their own individuality, enabling every child reach their full potential. If your child is turning three before March 26th 2018, your child would be entitled to a part-time place after Easter. This term has been an extremely successful one for our sports teams. Our Year 8 boys won the Ospreys Regionals Plate final at Bae Baglan. In a very tough game against Cwmtawe the boys’ courage and character shone through. All 17 players did themselves proud with their commitment and attitude. Well done to Cynffig’s try scorers Kai Evans, Donavon Rankin and Jordan Harris (2). The winning streak continued with our U16 Netball squad winning the Ann Smart County Tournament. The girls will now go through to play in the next round in March. The team work, commitment and sporting prowess displayed by the girls was second to none. Well done to both teams on much deserved victories. This term Cynffig’s Science Department have welcomed our Year 6 primary partners who are proving themselves to be outstanding Scientists. Pupils who enjoyed the experience of learning in our labs were certainly up to the challenge. We look forward to welcoming these budding Scientists in September. Congratulations also to Charlotte Edmunds Year 9 who entered the UK EPTA Piano Competition. Charlotte who has already achieved a distinction in her category now looks forward to the regional finals. Congratulations and best wishes from us all. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

THE MORAL OF THE WIND THE CRISP SPRING AIR AND SUN A hazy day found the wind and sun, chatting flippantly, trying to create some fun. An amicable dual was idly suggested by a misanthropic wind ,the philanthropic sun accepted. From their vantage point in the sky, they observed a man, clad in mack, sauntering by. The first to make the victim remove his mack Would be exalted to leader of the pack. Supercilious wind, confidently endeavoured first. Blew and blew, until his inflated cheeks burst. More furiously he blew, less reason to gloat, tighter the man wrapped around his coat. Attacked from all angles. Coat flapping, belt entangled. Arms tight around waist, hunched shoulders. The cold-ridden man onwardly soldiered, Defeated! Depleted! The humble apple pie sun’s effort next Radiant , glowing, loving, the wind vexed. The amiable sun, showered down his holistic, healing beams. Caressing the recipient gently, ‘twas a blessing, a dream. Within two simple seconds, a controversial coat was removed. Results were achieved through love not hate, a moral had been proved. Compassion, warmth and kindness saved the day. Menacing, threatening, bullying will not enforce people to sway. The way to a woman’s heart is love not war. Solidarity, not adversity, a solid fact one can’t ignore. Nicola Evans, Porthcawl

The daylight rises, Its early morn, One day is history, And a new day born.

The crisp spring air, Bitter to the core, With better weather, Now coming more. Rain forecast less, To your delight, With brighter mornings, And darker nights. With less rainfall now, There is always doubt, If it gets too hot, We may have another drought. Written by David Boyce, Brackla, Bridgend

OUR WONDERFUL WORLD The scorching sun sits silently above; warming the little grains of beach sand like meat in an oven, While the waves roll in washing away any sad memories. Crabs crawl away from the noisy children. The children who dance, dig holes and play games, that’s the way the beach is. Amazing animals roam the land, While smaller bugs buzz through the heated air. Newborns wander, exploring this magical new home, They fall over, get up again and that’s the way the forest is, Friends argue, friends fight and friends fall out. People argue, fight and can fall out. But we all do the same things for at the end of the day… We still stay friends and that’s the way our world is… wonderful. AMOEBA Nobody cares for Amoeba Or rescues us from the pond. If someone would just show affection They’d find that we’d gladly respond. They study our lives in the classroom And stare at the teacher’s charts. Then they draw our shape in their workbooks And label our miniscule parts. But that is the end of their interest; Right after that they forget, And when they grow up they ignore us, They never choose us as a pet. They all have their pet dogs and budgies, And cats that love to roam; Rabbits and fish and stick insects. Who gives Amoeba a home? They’ve given rights to children And animals stuck in the zoo. They even give rights to foxes. Why can’t we have some rights too? One day we’ll all get together; Billions and billions will come, And mass, single-celled rejection Will put all MPs on the run. We’ll surge unchecked to Westminster; Quintillions will flock to our band. A giant amorphous jelly That could block all the taps in the land. Then they’ll sit up and take notice, Then we’ll be able to gloat. Do-gooders will crawl from the woodwork And shout, “Give Amoeba the vote!” So when you are taking your leisure And haven’t got much to do, Just spare a thought for Amoeba; Remember that God made us too Bob Davies, North Cornelly

I LOVE YOU WALES I love you Wales, in springtime, When the landscape wakes from slumber deep. I visit Carreg Cennen, On a day both crisp and bright. Climbing to the castle, Passing fields of newborn lambs. In the hedgerows, hosts of daffodils Toss their golden heads. I love you Wales. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

GARDEN WASTE RECYCLING RETURNS Recycling hit another all-time high over the Christmas and New Year period with news that there was a 68 per cent increase compared to statistics from the previous year’s festive season. This month also sees the return of garden waste collections, which will be available every fortnight between 12th March and 23rd November. People who register for this optional service receive two reusable sacks which can be used for the disposal of plants, flowers, weeds, grass, leaves, hedge clippings and more. The sacks can be put out alongside regular recycling and refuse for collection at the kerbside. It costs £28 per household with a discounted rate of £24 for pensioners. All garden waste collected in Bridgend County Borough is taken to a local firm and turned into a compost fertiliser. Just over 3,600 homes signed up for the scheme last year, and a 38 per cent increase in the amount recycled was recorded. To sign up for the scheme, call 01656 643643 and choose option two for ‘waste’. Garden waste can also be taken to household recycling centres at Tythegston, Brynmenyn Industrial Estate or the Heol Ty Gwyn Industrial Estate in Maesteg. PORTHCAWL SHOULD GET FREE PARKING TOO Bridgend Council has been praised for the success of the trial allowing free parking in the Rhiw car park for up to two hours with numbers using it doubling. But what about Porthcawl? Traders there have been urging the council for years to introduce a free first hour – two would be even better. While Welsh Government provided funding to BCBC for the scheme in Bridgend, the council must now look for innovative ways to extend the scheme to Porthcawl. With free parking in Maesteg, Porthcawl is the only major town centre in the borough not making this offer to shoppers. This would be the greatest service that the council could do to preserve Porthcawl’s high street. Town centres are in decline and while much of that is down to things like online shopping, it is also true that councils have adopted punitive attitudes to motorists driving into towns. Old ideas about the need to keep traffic out and deter parking need to be revised to deal with the reality of half empty high streets – and jam packed supermarket and out of town shopping centres with their free car parks. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY CARE CENTRE I am pleased that building work has now started on the new primary care and community services centre in Porthcawl. A few weeks ago, GPs and healthcare officials held a turf cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction. The new centre will be located on Newton Nottage Road, next to Meadow Lake. I know that for some people, the site may not be the perfect location, however, we cannot ignore the fact that the current situation is not fit for purpose. Indeed, the main surgery site is not sufficient as it does not have the space needed to deliver those modern healthcare services, services are not all delivered in one place with patients having to travel between two sites and there is little capacity to modernise or expand. This new purpose built centre is much needed for the town and will provide more space and modern facilities to meet the needs of patients. The new centre will be more welcoming for patients. I look forward to seeing progress on site as the new primary care centre takes shape. I understand that the centre is due to be completed in spring 2019. CARWYN JONES AM Bridgend Labour Party

JENNINGS IN RUNNING FOR MAJOR UK AWARD

NEW DEMENTIA-FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES REVEALED

I was delighted to see that the transformation of the Jennings Building has been shortlisted for a major national award by the Royal Town Planning Institute. This well-respected scheme recognises projects that transform economies, environments and communities, and just making the shortlist is a huge achievement. The Jennings has been nominated under the Excellence in Planning for Heritage and Culture category, and will be up against some stiff competition from the likes of the Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre, the refurbishment of the Grade II listed Darlington Hippodrome and the Tower Hamlets Conservation Strategy. Speaking of award-winning performances, I hope you had the opportunity to witness Porthcawl Comprehensive’s recent production of the Phantom of the Opera at the Grand Pavilion. This marked a special occasion as it was the school’s 40th consecutive musical production. It was also nostalgic for my wife and I as we remembered that we were in the audience for the school’s first show, Oliver, back in 1977. Porthcawl’s young performers have maintained incredible high standards, and it was great to see so many former staff and teachers at the show, including the then-headteacher, Gordon Ebsworth, of whom I and many others have very fond memories.

Statistics from Age UK estimate that although up to 800,000 people are affected by dementia, only 43 per cent are diagnosed with the condition. That’s why I was delighted to see Cefn Cribwr, Porthcawl, Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cornelly become the latest areas to be recognised as dementia-friendly communities. Local businesses, shops, churches, schools, voluntary organisations and more have signed up to the Dementia Friendly scheme, which establishes a network of communities where people who are living with dementia can experience respect, understanding and support. Participating premises in each community have completed training to help them spot and support people who may have dementia – look out for special ‘Forget-Me-Not’ badges and stickers on display. The scheme has been developed in partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, BAVO, SHOUT Bridgend and local town and community councils. It encourages greater understanding, tolerance and support, and helps people remain in the homes and communities that they are familiar with for as long as possible. It also reduces social isolation and loneliness, and improves the health of people living with dementia. You can find out more by calling BAVO on 01656 810400 or contacting the Alzheimer’s Society on 01656 647158.

ROOFING SCAMS

PORTHCAWL INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE

Many people have fallen victim to roofing scams over the years, it is an easy trap to fall in to. There are very few of us who are experts in construction and so a few well-placed observations by scammers can panic us into paying for repairs which are not needed. An article in the Trading Standards Review, Issue 13 January 2018, by Charles Leigh-Dugmore draws light to this problem, dubbing it the “It’s worse than I thought” process. This approach sees scammers offer mundane services, such as cleaning, and subsequently offering increasingly dire assessments of your roof, until the homeowner feels the need to pay for repairs or risk irreparable damage to their property. The article goes on to assure us lay people, that rooves very rarely need these emergency repairs, often lasting for 80 years or more. In essence, the advice we are given is to not panic and always seek a second opinion. An attitude of scepticism towards an urgent rush for extensive repairs and refitting, and a call for considered thinking and seeking extra information is the best way a homeowner can protect themselves and not fall victim to such a scam.

We write as the ‘Porthcawl Independent Alliance’ - eleven of your Independent Porthcawl Town Councillors working together to improve Porthcawl for residents, businesses and visitors. Project update Our 100 Bins project is well underway, with 40 new bins already in use and 60 more bins on their way. We have contracted for better grass cutting in the cemetery and are in advanced discussions with BCBC regarding 30 minutes free parking in town. What’s happening generally? · The recent decision by BCBC to buy back the Salt Lake lease is a major step in the right direction. Many of your independent borough councillors have been instrumental in this process. · We are pleased to see at long last the £3 million renovation of tarmac beach. This follows extensive work and campaigning by one of your Independent Borough Councillors. · We would like to encourage residents to respond to the consultation on the proposed cancellation of up to 3 of our local bus services. For those who rely on local buses, such cuts can lead to social isolation and loneliness. Search online for “BCBC Supported Bus Service Consultation” and have your say. · In response to a number of requests, your town council is currently looking at proposals for a Memorial Bench scheme. As always, we’ll keep you updated. Porthcawl Independent Alliance Let’s take Porthcawl Forward

Club features DOGS TRUST DOG OF THE MONTH

Tessie is a 6 year old Bichon Frise. Once she knows you, she is a fun and affectionate girl but she can be a little shy when first meeting people so new owners will need to make multiple visits to the centre to build up a relationship before taking her home. She socialises with other dogs and could live with another dog in the home as this will help gain her confidence. She enjoys her walks and would love to run and play with other dogs. Tessie can live with children aged 14 years and over. She is happy to be left for a few hours and travels well in the car. If you would like to know more about Tessie, contact Dogs Trust Bridgend on 01656 725219; or visit the centre in Bridgend CF31 4NG. You can also visit www.dogstrust.org.uk

MINI MYSTERY: A MURDEROUS AFFAIR In March 1855 well-to-do Madeleine Smith, aged 19, met a humble clerk, Pierre L’Angelier, aged 31 and, against her father’s wishes, entered into an affair. The couple exchanged a stream of passionate love letters. However, because of the gap in their social status they found it difficult to meet. In an effort to keep their affair secret, Madeleine burnt Pierre’s letters, but he kept the 198 epistles she sent to him. The letters reveal that the couple consummated their affair on 6th May 1856. Madeleine’s father, James, found out and forbade any further contact. Madeleine asked Pierre to return her letters. Besotted with her, he insisted that the affair should continue, or he would send them to her father. Then, on 23rd March 1857, L’Angelier died of arsenic poisoning. The letters were discovered and Madeleine was arrested. At her trial, Madeleine admitted that she bought arsenic, but insisted it was for cosmetic purposes, not for murder. The evidence placed the Scottish jury in two minds and they returned a verdict of ‘not proven’. Madeleine walked free. Later, she began a new life in America, where she died, aged 93. PORTHCAWL LIONS BURNS NIGHT Recently, the Porthcawl Lions marked Burns Night at the Hi Tide Porthcawl. This now annual event arranged by Lions Ian and Aileen. It was well attended and guests enjoyed a traditional celebration to the Scottish bard with the piping in and addressing of the haggis. Porthcawl Museum arranged a raffle and Ceri and Paul Joseph from the museum did the time-honoured toast to the Lads and Lassies. Porthcawl Lion Andrew Collier gave an entertaining address about the life and times of Burns, with other entertainment supplied by piper John Campbell and singer Freda Rodgers. The evening finished when guests took to the floor for some Scottish dancing led by Jan Richards, which was greatly enjoyed by all those who took part after some hilarious attempts to master some if not all of the steps. PORTHCAWL BUCKANEERS PRESENTATION EVENING 2017 saw another successful Carnival and the 53rd Christmas Morning Swim was the biggest yet, and this culminated in £14,250 being presented to 26 local charities at our Presentation Event at the Hi-Tide on 9th February. The theme for the swim this year was ‘Father Christmas’ in memory of founder member and our first Father Christmas, Jack Bridge, who sadly passed away during 2017. Jack and his family were supported by Macmillan Cancer Support. Macmillan provides practical advice and support for those diagnosed with cancer as well as for their family and friends. For this reason, Macmillan was chosen as the swim’s main charity. Over 1200 swimmers entered the sea on a fresh Christmas morning making 2017 our biggest swim yet and each swimmer received a commemorative mug. These were generously sponsored by Porthcawl Surf School. 2017’s Carnival was threatened by bad weather, which effected the numbers both along the route and on the Carnival field. The weather held out however and those who attended enjoyed. Frank Murphy of the MacMillan Bridgend & District Fundraising Group accepted a cheque for £3,500, with Porthcawl Museum & Historical Society, Porthcawl Girlguides and Porthcawl & Pyle Pumas Boxing Club among the other beneficiaries. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

You might recall that some months ago I mentioned that the Talbot had been successful in its bid for funding from Tesco’s Bags of Help. Well, work has now commenced on the Talbot’s walled garden. Many people won’t know that we have a garden because it’s hidden from both the front and rear of the Talbot. We have cleared the garden of the old pots and have power washed the slabbed floor. We now intend painting the walls, keeping the dragon mosaic that was designed by Scope in 2008. After that, and come the spring, we will be buying pots, plants, shrubs etc. We already have two raised beds to fill. We want to buy a few small trees, perhaps a trellis frame with climbing clematis, and most importantly, a water feature. We hope that when it’s complete, our members will be able to sit outside on the garden furniture under a parasol (because the sun will be too strong!) and admire and enjoy the results of our labours during the next couple of months. For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher

Parenting today seems much different from when I was young. My parents had authority and challenging it resulted in punishment. When I became an adult, I read of how experts now believe that strong discipline in early life leads to violence in adults. So I asked my parents why we were raised in such a way? I will never forget the response. “We knew that if we didn’t discipline you, then the police and the courts might. And as parents we could never allow that.” Now, I may not be an expert; however, I think there is much value in the way my parents chose for me and my siblings, for I have witnessed for myself the association between a lack of disciplined parenting at home and the staggering rates of antisocial behaviour. The apostle Paul considered himself a parent to the church at Corinth, and he was aware of the dangers associated with arrogance and pride among Christians. Therefore, Paul spoke to the Corinthians with the authority of a loving parent. And his strong discipline worked for the salvation of his spiritual family. God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES After thinking and praying about what to share this month I felt God prompting me to write briefly about loneliness. Loneliness has been called ‘the great modern sickness of the soul’. Loneliness can be a terrible thing and those who have experienced it know how bad it can be. I want to encourage all those who feel lonely by saying that Jesus wants to come close to you. Take this message as if from him and not merely from me. I guess it would be worth clarifying that Jesus is certainly alive and real today, and that He knows all about how you feel. Turn to Him and allow Him to help you in that area. There are many, many people who have been right where you are and have found rest, comfort and healing in knowing God. God is the one who makes our lives complete and that is certainly something that every person needs. No one has it all figured out. A prayer to pray: Lord, I want to turn to you and know your presence in my life, which makes me whole. Help me to give it all over and find rest in you. Neil Harvey

CANOPUS Most people are aware that the brightest star in the sky is Sirius, which can be found by following the line of three stars that make up Orion’s belt. Sirius is one of our nearest neighbours in space and has twice the mass of our Sun yet 25 times as bright. Unfortunately for those of us who live in Britain, the second brightest star in the sky never rises above the horizon! To see it you will have to travel south of latitude 37 degrees between the months of November to March. This of course includes a lot of popular holiday desinations including southern Europe and the southern United States. The second brightest star is named Canopus and can be found at some distance directly below Sirius, which will be much higher in the sky from warmer countries. Canopus is nearly 40 times farther away than Sirius and four times its size. The star is over 10,000 times as bright as our Sun so it’s just as well it is so far away from us! Unlike Sirius, which is pure white in colour, Canopus has a rather yellow hue. In 500,000 years it will be the sky’s brightest star. Clive Down FRAS

PORTHCAWL U3A Spring is in the air and daffodils dance on Porthcawl prom! This is the time of the year when many choose to join Porthcawl U3A and take advantage of the impressive range of creative and leisure opportunities on offer. February saw our usual, well attended, talk at the Hi Tide, whilst the Sunday lunch club visited the Ye Olde Wine House at Pyle. There was also an interesting day trip to the Royal Mint at Llantrisant, plus around 100 meetings of our popular interest groups, each coming together in easily accessible venues across Porthcawl. As well as established firm favourites, the month saw first meetings of new groups such as Ukulele and Ta’i Chi, with several others about to make their debut. On 14th March we hold our Annual General Meeting at the Hi Tide. As ever, we wrap the important business part of proceedings, including a visual presentation showing the highlights of Porthcawl U3A’s year, in a convivial mix of entertainment provided by pupils from Porthcawl Comprehensive School. Tea/coffee with homemade cakes and biscuits are available, all served with a warm and friendly welcome. It’s a 14:00 start and we look forward to seeing as many members as possible turn out for this important and enjoyable afternoon. John Abraham, Chairman of Porthcawl RNLI committee has decided to retire following 20 successful years volunteering for the charity. Club features SCOUT LEADER FROM BRIDGEND SELECTED TO REPRESENT WALES AT WORLD SCOUT JAMBOREE

My name is Melanie and I am a Scout Leader from Bridgend. In August, I was selected from a number of applicants though a series of activities and interviews that demonstrated by ability to lead a group of 36 young individuals from across Wales to attend the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia in 2019. The young people will camp with 45,000 people from almost every country in the world and share experiences whilst working towards a greater international understanding. They will also learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life. In order to support these young people in this experience, I personally have to raise £3,495 to attend. I also have to prepare and train the young people for working together as a team, preparing them for an extended period away from home (some have never been abroad before), understanding and valuing different cultural norms and practices and for a life changing experience. If you are able to help support me in any way, please contact me on melanie.hall@scoutscymru.org.uk

CORNELLY CRAFT CLUB

Nearly 40 years and still going strong! The Cornelly Craft Club, started by Doris Davies many years ago, and now organised by Jean David, is letting you know the doors are always open for new members. The club meets every Wednesday at 2pm at the North Cornelly Public Hall, Heol Las. With over 30 members throughout the borough already attending weekly it is a true social event to meet and participate in your craft, maybe show others how to take up a craft too. There’s knitting, sewing, jewellery making, card making, tapestry, crochet, and many more. What’s your hobby or craft? The club members are always keen to learn something new! All ages attend. Myra Davies of Kenfig Hill has been going every week for 30 years! It’s the social side that keeps the members coming with teas, coffee and cakes on offer, so why not? The club also organise lunches, shopping trips, book sharing, trips to the theatre and the Christmas lunch is not to be missed. Local charities also benefit through their active fundraising, well done all. So why not join them every Wednesday at currently just £2.00 per month member’s fee.

Legal advice HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY FOR COUPLES WHERE MONEY IS CONCERNED Recent research has shown that as many as one in five people are “financially incompatible”; that a lack of shared financial goals has put a strain upon their relationship and that they wish that they had been more open and honest about the topic earlier. Discussions are vital, as the financial landscape is changing. Increasingly, people are employed on zero hours contracts and the “gig economy” is gaining precedence. Also, in the advent of the digital world, secrecy is possible, as people are able to bank privately using a smartphone app or can develop a costly online gambling habit without their partner ever knowing. There are broadly three ways that couples bank and pay for household bills: share everything using a joint account, use a joint account for bills or maintain separate accounts. If you value your financial independence, you may not want a joint account, in which case you will need to be vigilant about who pays what. However, if your partner is secretive, you will not have a sense of what they have and what they spend. If you close your personal account and hastily open a joint account with a new partner, you will be liable for any joint debts which are run up on that account. Another disadvantage of choosing the joint account option is that upon separation it could be difficult to ring-fence your salary or pay important bills. In order to avoid difficulties, it is important to establish financial goals early on and to keep the channels of communication open throughout the relationship to make sure that you are still on the same wavelength. To fail to do so will mean time consuming, and often costly proceedings later if the relationship breaks down. Madeline Rand, Melanie Lazarus & Co

INHERITANCE An inheritance can never compensate for the death of a partner or family member. And, unfortunately, inheritance claims can cause problems, for example, if someone believes they aren’t receiving their fair share of a person’s estate. Even more difficult and upsetting inheritance problems can arise if a person was financially dependent on the deceased or if the executors of a will are accused of not acting properly. Claiming an inheritance is usually straightforward if you are named in the will as a beneficiary. The executors take control of all the deceased’s assets, pay off any debts and distribute the inheritances to the beneficiaries according to the terms of the will. As a beneficiary, you do not normally need to claim your inheritance or pay any inheritance tax – the executors should deal with this. You may, however, need to be patient. Administering an estate can be time-consuming and it often takes several months before a beneficiary receives an inheritance. Family inheritance becomes problematic if there is no will or if you feel the will was unfair. If there is no will, family inheritance entitlements are governed by the rules of intestacy. Depending on the amounts involved, any spouse (or civil partner) is entitled to inherit at least part of the estate, with the remainder split among the nearest relatives. With or without a will, family inheritances may seem unfair. Particular problems can arise if a couple were living together (without actually being married or in a civil partnership), if there were previous relationships or stepchildren or if a will unexpectedly favours one child over another. Spouses, civil partners, former spouses or civil partners, cohabiting partners, children and any financial dependents may be able to make a claim for reasonable financial provision – even if the will (or the rules of intestacy) specifies a smaller inheritance or no inheritance at all. Inheritance disputes can occur in other situations. For example, a will can be invalid if it was drawn up under undue pressure or if the testator subsequently married. Individual bequests in the will may be invalid. For example, if the bequest is unclear or if an inheritance has been left to one of the witnesses. Disputes can also occur if executors act improperly, either by mistake (eg misinterpreting the will) or deliberately. Inheritance claim disputes, like other legal disputes, can be complex, time-consuming and costly. Whether you are a beneficiary or not, if you are not getting the inheritance to which you believe you are entitled you should take legal advice.

PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL

2018 is an important year for Townswomen as it is 100 years since the vote was given to women over 30. It was not until 1928 that all women over 21 were given the vote and that was the year that Townswomens Guilds began partly to educate women to use the vote. It is interesting to note that in 1918 women over 21 were allowed to stand for parliament but not allowed to vote! At our last meeting we had a presentation from Sheila Pugh telling us about ‘Mercy Ships’ which have been giving medical aid to people for forty years. There are many aspects to their work for as well as giving aid they also train and mentor local health professionals. A cheque for £550 was sent to Pagets Association following our successful Autumn Fayre. Our literary group now called “Poems for Pleasure” celebrated Burns night with his poems. Beales was the place for our monthly luncheon. This months meeting is on March 14th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall and is our AGM. All welcome to hear what we have been doing the past year. Dorothy Thomas. Tel: 772157

Hello friends, cold as it has been spring is well on its way. We are all busy settling our plans for springs events and outings. Our speaker at last months meeting was Catherine Powell. She gave a very interesting and informative talk about the problems and challanges that altzheimer’s sufferers have to face. There have been many discussions on how best to best help. We can all be more sympathetic and understanding. An initiciative to make Porthcawl more altzheimer’s friendly has been proposed. Being a national and international organisation, we get invited to other groups’ events. In March we have been invited to afternoon tea and entertainment in the Aberdare club. The speaker Deborah Johns topic is the history of Black Pill. At Machen the Camarthen club is having a coffee morning in aid of the Air Ambulance. To be held at St Peters civic hall Camarthen on 10th of March from 10am until noon. We have also been invited to a Fashion Show in Milford Haven club. These events all raise money for local and international charities. We welcome friends with new ideas. Our next meeting is at the Grove Golf Club on Tuesday the 6th of March. Suzanne Jefferies

Tuesday the 13th of February we held our monthly meeting in the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill usual time 2pm to 4.30pm. We are lucky to hold our meetings in the Talbot Centre for the facilities are first class and appreciated by our members. We had a good turn out and the meeting got off to a good start, chaired by deputy president and minutes read by our secretary. We have finalised our lunch in the Grove, Porthcawl, and all are looking forward to an enjoyable meal later in the month. With the dates for our diary filling up, we can see the months ahead are going to be busy. Tea and biscuits followed. Our speaker this month was Grace Sollis and the topic - Craft with demonstration. The talk and demonstration was enjoyed by all including the several visitors, which we are hoping will soon become new members. Our speaker for next month is Sian Roberts - the topic is Loving Welsh Foods, which sounds interesting. Our craft and scrabble group meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month in the Life Centre Pyle 2.30pm till 4.30pm. Our walking group will be on track as soon as the weather improves. Call in, all are welcome. Christine Callaghan

We recently held our Annual New Year Luncheon at The Heronston Hotel. Members enjoyed an excellent meal and were joined by Mel Bastier of ‘Out To Learn Willow’, who gave a fascinating presentation on her skills working with willow. Mel brought along various examples of her extensive range, explaining the exacting process involved in achieving the finished article and revealed she sources her supplies of willow from the Somerset levels. Her regular workshops are held in Ewenny and anyone interested in learning more would be very welcome. Business & finance FCA WARNING – DO NOT IGNORE INTEREST-ONLY PROBLEM TIME-BOMB! At the time of writing, a report has been issued by the Financial Conduct Authority ’ (FCA) with a stark warning to homeowners with interest-only mortgages, DO NOT ignore the question of how to repay the mortgage or you could lose your home. “We are very concerned that a significant number of interestonly customers may not be able to repay the capital at the end of the mortgage and be at risk of losing their homes,” said Jonathan Davidson, executive director of supervision at the FCA. 1.67 MILLION interest-only mortgages exist where homeowners have no way of repaying the lender. Ignoring the problem changes nothing. However, there are ways borrowers CAN be helped but you MUST speak to an experienced Adviser who knows the market. A growing number of established lenders wish to help but you must discuss the matter with an Adviser. We receive calls DAILY from people in this very difficult situation and we’ve already helped a good number of these. However, the longer you leave it, the worse it becomes, as the time left decreasing day by day. We can’t promise to be able to help every caller that comes to us and yes, we have seen some people who have actually lost their homes – because they ignored it and left it too late. Call us NOW on 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 and we’ll take a look at it without delay. Now, for those of you without these problems to contend with, we have a warning of a different kind. If you have reached the end of a deal with your lender, STOP! Your lender may offer you another deal however another lender may have something better. A number of our clients have received better offers from other lenders, so, don’t just take the first one you’re offered – ask us to check the market for you. If your current lender is still the best option, we can sort a new deal for you with them. Finally – there are now schemes where you can have a buyto-let mortgage especially to rent the property out to a family member, where they can’t get a mortgage themselves. We have all these schemes available to you – just call us on 782545. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial (The new name for Cambria Financial) 01656 782545

FINAL SALARY PENSION TRANSFER! GOOD IDEA BAD IDEA? Well, judging by the endless press speculation over the Tata Steel pension transfer furore, the answer would be a bad idea. One newspaper published that 80% of the 24,000 members of the scheme were going to transfer out but common sense tells us there were not enough financial advisers in the UK let alone South Wales to transact this much business in a few months. Eventually sanity prevails and we are told by the British Steel Pension Scheme recently that only 2,700 are transferring but even this is too many according to the media, so why do they think this? Can 2,700 people be wrong to move their pensions from a Defined Benefit Scheme to an invested scheme? So exactly why did they do it? Probably as a knee jerk reaction to a pension scheme that was closing initially and then not being provided with sufficient options they decided to take control of their own fund, is that so bad? 42 | seaside news

Having a guaranteed pension is one thing but if it dies with you when you have the choice to leave the whole fund tax free to a loved one rather suggests clarity of thought. Having the control of deciding when to retire and not being dictated to is also very empowering especially as you can access tax free cash at age 55 but not have to retire. So what’s wrong with paying off your mortgage early? Final Salary Transfer Values are currently eye wateringly high due to low annuity and interest rates so you can’t blame the pension holder for thinking this was a life changing moment that might never re-occur. If you’re risk averse it’s probably not for you but there are so many variations to people’s needs there cannot be a prescriptive answer. It’s a personal choice you make according to your circumstances but you need the guidance from a financial advisor to get you there. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

Gardening advice PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY The flower club has reached an important milestone. This year it is celebrating its Emerald (55th) Anniversary. A celebration dinner was held in December in the Atlantic Hotel in Porthcawl. We were delighted that our guest-of-honour, Mrs Kath Lee was able to attend. Kath is an Associate of Honour and a board member of NAFAS. She has been a very good friend of the club for many years. Kath proposed the toast and wished the club every success in the future. Grateful thanks to Mr Trevor Morris for taking photographs of the occasion. Included here is one of Kath, Mrs Ann Butler, club chairperson and Mrs Mair Stockford, club president, cutting the Anniversary cake, which was made by club member Mrs Judith Orphan. The tables were beautifully decorated by Mrs Maureen Fargie, the club tutor. On display was a photograph album showing events in which the club has taken part, such as flower displays in several churches and cathedrals and successes in the Chelsea Flower Show. The evening was enjoyed by members who all received a lovely slate coaster to commemorate this special milestone in the club’s history. Mair Stockford

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB March! At last its springtime and we can start looking forward to some nicer weather. March is named after Mars the God of war but he is also the god of agriculture so we have him on our side! The daffodil is the flower of the month. Legend has it gifting a bunch of daffodils ensures happiness for the recipient, but giving one single daffodil means bad luck (bit like chocolates really!) Daffodils contain sap that is poisonous so if you want to mix them with other flowers in a vase soak them for 24 hours first to remove the sap (and don’t let your dog’s chew them!) Time to start sowing – if you are sowing parsnips outside, sow them in clusters of three or four because they are notoriously erratic at germinating! Plant early potatoes this month and onion sets, it is worth cutting off the dry skin at the tip of the onions with a sharp knife, to stop the birds pulling them up! Slugs are back (yippee!) Boy do they love nice new shoots – watch out for them. Lawns may need cutting this month –do it with the blades on high (heaven!) Chris Early

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS Finally the days are getting a little bit lighter for longer. Everywhere our gardens are beginning to ‘wake up’ again after the long winter months with buds fattening on trees and shrubs and green shoots emerging from the soil. Along with the beautiful Narcissi flowering in our gardens there are, of course, the first rash of annual weeds beginning to germinate. The good thing about weeding at this time of year is that it allows us to get near to all the lush new growth! Our greenhouses are beginning to fill up with seedlings and it won’t be long before our staging will be covered with new plants for the coming year. Our gardening club monthly talks also reflect the gardening year to come with such topics as interesting gardens to visit and a speakers favourite plants – so lots of information on new ideas and things to consider on our own plots. As a club we collectively welcome spring with our annual gathering to celebrate St. David’s Day. This year we will be having a dual celebration – our patron Saint and our recently refurbished kitchen! Thanks to a great deal of hard work fund raising and wonderful support from our sponsors in conjunction with a successful grant application we now have a kitchen which is ‘fit for purpose’. 4 GIVING CONTINUED - ETHICS The Buddha’s doctrine emphasizes five key areas of ethical intention and action (Kamma, the common word). Giving a gift with a mind imbued with cessation, when deeply tuned in and aware, will involve not harming self and others, speech that accompanies such an act will not involve a fabrication or lie, desire and greediness will be halted and the gift given will not make the mind sloppy and sleepy. How do we do this? How many times do we give a gift of alcohol that is not conducive to our welfare? Only to learn afterwards, the person that we gave it to ended up in further strife. This may manifest in social strife (arguments, regrettable speech/text, fights, accidents, sexual offences) but also biological suffering (the dreaded hangover). To halt this habit try the following steps. At the alcohol aisle 1. Pause, the act of giving has to be known, holding the bottle ask “Is this act of giving conducive to my welfare and the welfare of others?”. Recollect your inner wisdom. 2. Pause, holding this bottle know this “Is my mind formulating marketing stories that tempt me to purchase? How true are these thought stories?” 3. Pause, Holding this bottle, is greed and desire arising in me? Know the body sensation, 4. Pause, hold the bottle, know this - all these constructs in my mind/body are impermanent, subject to decay and they are certainly not me! 5. Pause, put the bottle down, know this alcohol, ruins my alertness and mindfulness. These series of steps can be repeated. Now that you have spent time contemplating your relationship to that bottle, you may be in a more stable mind-set. Your initial thought/feeling to purchase and give was plain habit and reaction. Having let go in that moment, recognise the process of release. Notice the effect of your self-created wholesome Kamma. Little by little mastery will be yours! Neville Evans

IS ULTRA-PROCESSED FOOD BECOMING AN ADDICTION? Consumption of ultra-processed food is increasing. A recent study has revealed high levels of ultra-processed foods bought in Europe. The UK has topped the list with over 50% of food purchased by households being ultra-processed. Big Food knows what it’s doing when it designs these ‘foods’ to hit our ‘blisspoint’ in order to keep us going back for more. Made from cheap ingredients and produced on a huge scale these foods are a far cry from the whole unprocessed foods rich in nutrients, recommended in the ANH-Intl Food 4 Health guidelines. Increased levels of consumption are also contributing to rising rates of obesity, chronic disease, dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. www.anhinternational.org Buy as much natural food as you can and of course plenty of fruit, nuts and vegetables. Arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW One of the most commonly asked questions when I give talks on running my own film company is what is one of the biggest problems you hit? It’s an easy one to answer: locations. Why? Because so many places these days regard it as an excellent way of making money and charge heavily for access to their property or land. They imagine that all film makers have big budgets and will readily pay the going rate, which is often exorbitant, but low budget film producers like myself cannot compete with the big television and film companies. Several potential locations had to be removed from the list when shooting ‘Ghosts of Glamorgan’ a few years ago. Luckily, some landlords like Gareth Maund at the Prince of Wales in Kenfig welcomed myself and my small production crew, including Stag Marks, who also starred in one of the film’s other scenes, and Gareth took part in the film, too – we had to wait for closing time, which meant shooting the scene just before midnight! I hear that Gareth is now leaving the Prince, and I wish him a long and happy retirement. Anthony Hontoir 07510 934299 Picture: Cornelly legends Stag Marks and Gareth Maund

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Last month saw the anniversary of the death of one of Porthcawl’s favourite sons, Steve Strange. Steve, the pop star and pioneer of the 1980s New Romantic Movement, passed at the young age of 55. I was lucky enough to know Steve, who was a nice and very humble guy, and he even recorded one of our songs, with his own 80s slant to it. It’s never been released but hopefully it will be in the near future, it really is good and would be a fitting tribute to the great man’s legacy. Bridgend rock gods Bullet For My Valentine are second on the bill to Avenged Sevenfold at the Download Fest on the 8th to 10th June. The band is on tour in the States at the moment and recording their sixth studio album. Drummer Moose has left the band, which is a shame, as he was with them in the early days when they were Jeff Killed John. We wish him all the best. I’m involved with a few festivals this year including the Welsh Fest at St Nicholas, Cardiff on 27th to 29th July, and the Acoustic Festival of Great Britain at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 1st to 3rd July. CÔR DYSGWYR PORTHCAWL/ PORTHCAWL WELSH LEARNERS’ CHOIR IN FILMING FOR S4C Since its formation in 2016, many people in the Porthcawl area have become aware of our success in the Learners’ Choir Competition at the National Eisteddfod and various charity fundraising concerts. The Musical Director of Côr Dysgwyr Porthcawl, Mrs Anne Brown, received a request from S4C recently to film a choir practice. The choir was filmed in their normal practice session, with several songs performed. Anne and two members of the choir were also interviewed about the foundation of the choir and their journey so far. Our first appearance was on ‘Heno’, in January, where the focus was on the success of the choir and an invitation to new members, especially tenor and bass voices. The choir featured in a second programme in February. ‘Bore Da/Dal Ati’ is a magazine programme aimed at Welsh learners. The choir was shown in practice along with the interviews. This programme highlighted the recent achievements of the choir and its positive contribution to Welsh learning in the area. The choir enjoyed the whole experience with the presenter Alun Williams and friendly crew. The choir will now set their sights on competing in the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff Bay in August. Irene Collier

BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS On the first week of February we took all our music students to Liverpool for a recording studio / The Beatles experience. With the Fab Four being the biggest band in the world, the students experienced ‘The Beatles museum’ along with the famous ‘Cavern Club’. On day two we spent the day in Parr Street Recording Studio where Rhianna, Coldplay and The Stereophonics, among others have recorded. The students had the experience of recording in ‘Studio A’ where we recorded ‘All you need is Love’ by The Beatles and two original songs for the end of year show. All these experiences are working towards their end of year show entitled ‘Mersey Beat’, which is a tribute to The Beatles of course. The shows are taking place in Bridgend College on May 16th and The Hi-tide in Porthcawl on May 18th. You can purchase your ticket which includes an evening meal and 60s DJ on www.ticketsource.co.uk/bridgend. We also held our annual Music Masterclass series which went down a storm with talks from Luke Hughes (session drummer for Tom Odell), SWN Festival and Gethin Woolcock (Music Producer). Next month I will be updating you on more Creative Arts news. Adam Richards, Bridgend College arichards@bridgend.ac.uk Tel: 01656 302302

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR PERFORM AT CARDIFF CASTLE

Porthcawl Male Choir were delighted to be asked to perform at a special event at Cardiff Castle, and what a wonderful evening it turned out to be. The special event was organised by GE Aviation of Caerphilly and was in aid of one of its managers who had served the company for over 40 years. Mrs Mair Jones, the choir’s musical director, had prepared a varied programme for the evening comprising songs from Les Miserable and Blood Brothers, a number of Welsh favourites including O Gymru and Bryn Myrdddin, and a special request from the guests from all over the world, ‘World in Union’. Each piece was received with loud applause and appreciation from the assembled guests. The choir concluded the evening with a rendition of Amen, with the audience joining in by clapping their hands and tapping their feet. The choir was well supported by their accompanist Mr Richard Davies. The choir are now looking forward to a number of further events including an appearance at Ty Ellis’ Charity Lunch, Porthcawl Comprehensive School’s Annual Eisteddfod and a number of weddings. The choir has welcomed a number of new members to its ranks last year and would love to see even more. Please visit our website: www.porthcawlmalechoir.co.uk for further details. Mal Evans

PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Club Competition Two, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Members were allowed two entries into each section. Rob Greenhill from Treherbert judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was Geoff Baker with ‘Rest Bay Sunset’. The winner of the Digital Trophy was David Jones with ‘Steamy Window’. Congratulations to both Geoff and David for winning the competitions and a big thank you to all participants for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton. The Concert, hosted by Bridgend Male Choir, features Pontyclun based Vocelle Ladies Choir and the Oldcastle Primary School Choir. This annual event continues to delight and while the format remains similar, fresh faces and content make it one to look forward to. The concert is in support of the St John’s House Trust (Bridgend) who is committed to purchasing St John’s House, Newcastle Hill, Bridgend as a focal point for the local community. Following quickly on the heels of the Three Choirs Concert, the Choir can be seen at Tabernacle Chapel, Pontycymmer on the 9th March. Sport reports REST BAY JUNIORS WELSH STILLWATER CHAMPIONS!

The Welsh Stillwater Championships were held at The National Pool in Swansea over the weekend of the 27th and 28th of January 2018 and involved nineteen teams, from Wales and areas of England, taking part. The competition included a series of races which replicate a variety of rescue techniques and tests the young lifeguards ability to effect the rescues. The races range from 50 to 200 metres and involved individual events and relays. This all makes for a very exciting event. The Rest Bay Juniors went into the competition, with no expectation, other than to have a go and enjoy the weekend. We were thirty-one swimmers and all who competed gave their all, which resulted in an amazing win for the team. This was another first for the Junior team and what better way to start 2018! There were several medal winners, but it would be unfair to single out individuals, as each and everyone who raced contributed to the historic result! Over the last couple of years the Junior section has gone from strength to strength and Head Coach, Arran Bluck said of the win, “We go into everything we do as a team and I couldn’t be prouder of each individual who contributed to this amazing achievement. It couldn’t have happened to a more committed group of friends, who still manage to compete at this level, whilst still having fun. Great job guys,”. Rest Bay Juniors

RUNNER MARK HELPING THE FIGHT They say that cancer will affect most of us at some point. Those sentiments certainly ring true for Porthcawl’s Mark James, who has watched friends bravely battle the deadly disease in recent times, while his father is a survivor. And it was those courageous battles that made him decide he wanted to do his bit to help the fight. The 53-year-old, who a member of the Porthcawl Runners, completed the recent London Winter 10k Run for Cancer Research UK, while has already smashed his initial £470 fundraising target via his JustGiving page. It wasn’t all plain sailing though, having been laid low by flu in the weeks prior, which set him back in terms of preparation for the big day. However he was on the start line in Trafalgar Square and was supported on the day by wife and fellow runner Louise right to the finish in Whitehall. On what was a freezing cold day Mark, who only took up running a little over 12 months ago, also filmed some of the run on the way and was pleased as he came home in just under 1hour 10mins. Beautiful accommodation in stunning south west France

SOUTHERNDOWN AND OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT January started off 2018 with consistent swells up to 4 – 5ft and glassy with offshore breezes. Most surf days were cold with a cutting offshore breeze to contend with. At the time of writing the evenings are slowly drawing out while the Daffodils push up shoots ready to flower on the arrival of the face warm sun. The Barrelling shingle bank has shattered across the sands and is nowhere L and as usual in our times the bedrock at Southerndown is fully exposed 20 meters or more. Lets hope the pebble bank stays intact this year. One thing I enjoyed this month was a short film showing a Trophy presentation to Eli Perrins Davies when he won the UK Surf Pro Association Under 12 Championship at Fistral Cornwall, but it turned out to be last February. A joy to watch all the same. More Gromit news or perhaps he’s a bit too old for that title is our Cieran Hughes has broken a leg and is out of surf action for a while, booooooo. So here’s wishing the local talent all the success in the future and a speedy recovery to Cieran. David A Batten. BA Hons. www.tuskasurf.co.uk 56 | seaside news

REST BAY SLSC WELSH NIPPER STILLWATER CHAMPIONS

The first Sunday in February saw Rest Bay Surf Life Saving Club competing in the SLSA Welsh Stillwaters. Nippers vary in age from 7-13 and the competition consists of 3 individual events: Flipper Race, Manikin Carry and Rescue Tube Race. There are also a number of team events including a Medley Relay, Board Race, Board Rescue and Board Relay. The competition was held at the 50m Pool in Swansea and there were a few blurry-eyed parents present due to the early start at 8am and the day after the Wales v Scotland 6 Nations rugby match! 14 teams from throughout Wales competed against each other throughout the day, and it was clear from the smiles on the kid’s faces that they were enjoying every second! There’s a great team ethos in Rest Bay Nippers and everyone supported and cheered each other on and every single child who took part can be extremely proud of their efforts. There were a number of outstanding individual and team performances that

points separating the two teams at the end of a very long day, which is pretty much as close as it gets! Big shout out to Sker for an awesome day of competition. The next event now is the GB Stillwaters at the end of March, which is a huge step up but one we are very much looking forward to. Then it’s onto the beach (where we belong) to start training for all the Nipper Carnivals in the summer. What better place to spend your summer than on loads of different beaches throughout Wales and England! Rest Bay Nippers has limited spaces available for boys and girls but there are spaces for those born in 2010. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have loads of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.
