Dear Editor, So many locals and regular visitors to Trecco Bay are concerned about this lovely dog whose whole life is spent in a concrete yard, 24 hours a day. It has no stimulation, no comforts, no fun and exercise, just hour after hour lying in a yard. The RSPCA is campaigning for a change to the Animal Welfare laws so that dogs in this situation can be given a better life. Meanwhile, we can only hope that the owner may realise that so many people are upset about this dog, and perhaps do something to improve the quality of its life. JB, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL’S SISTER ACT

Dear Editor, Porthcawl Comprehensive School decided to make a change this year with their annual school production held in the Grand Pavilion. Leaving traditionalism behind, pupils and teachers alike took on the challenge of bringing Sister Act, a 2006 musical, to life on the stage. It’s an incredibly fun, energetic and humorous musical that centres on the diva-singer Deloris Van Cartier (Eddylia Osborne) who dreams of making it big. After witnessing a murder committed by Curtis Jackson (Will Foskett), her gangster boyfriend and his gang of dim-witted thugs (Keighan Dyer, Evan Davies and Patrick O’Neil.) She’s hunted by his Deloris is placed under the care of the shy police officer “Sweaty Eddie” Souther (Jack Williams). For her safety, she is placed into witness protection, under the alias Sister Mary Clarence seeking refuge in the Queen of Angels, a nun convent headed by the strongwilled and devoted Mother Superior (Elys Davies) and Monsignor O’Hara (Elis Powell). After being welcomed by the quirky Sister Mary Patrick (Carys Rosser-Stanford) and the rest of the sisters, she takes control of the disastrous church choir, previously lead by the deadpan Sister Mary Lazarus (Meg McCloy). Her influence transforms the convent’s resident tone-deaf nuns into an overnight sensation. It is at the Queen of Angels that Deloris takes under her wing the quiet Postulant, Sister Mary Robert (Annalise Traylor), and together with the convent they learn the value of loyalty in sisterhood and passion of performance. From start to finish, the cast, crew, orchestra and teachers worked extremely hard to provide a fabulous, high-energy performance through singing, dancing and acting. Eddylia took on the challenge of Deloris Van Cartier and wowed us from the first note to her last bow, not sparing on comedy, sass and a heart-warming display of emotion. Her rendition of the punchy opening number Take Me to Heaven, supported by her talented trio of divas, played by Olivia Baglow, Samantha Wensley and Beci Senior, left the audience star-struck before the show really began. Despite playing the ‘villain’ of the production, Will attacked his role with equal vigour, giving the crowed 10 | seaside news

someone they loved to hate particularly throughout When I Find my Baby which was in equal parts amusing and genuinely intimidating. Jack as the character of ‘Sweaty Eddie’ quickly won over our hearts through his nervous yet sweet portrayal of the Philadelphia Police Officer. Jacks sincere performance allowed us to watch his character grow in confidence and eventually become the hero of the show. Mother Superior, a difficultly stern and poised character to approach, was mastered by Elys, whose voice easily astounded and amazed. In her song I Haven’t Got a Prayer, we truly felt her characters frustrations whist also enjoying her humour and wit that left audience members chuckling long after. Annalise’s acute attention to the detail of her character gave such a sweet rendition of Mary Roberts and yet her burst of confidence in the Life I Never Led was enough to bring a tear to the eye. The crew that worked behind the scenes were clearly an efficient and fantastic team and made what were tricky scene changes appear seamless. The orchestra’s efforts in approaching the upbeat and highly energetic music was greatly impressive and hair raising from the first number to the last. Of course, without the efforts and direction of the tirelessly hardworking teachers, Mrs Kelly Pool, Miss Rhian Thomas, Mrs Rhiannon Giles and Mr Joe Smith, such an incredible show wouldn’t have been possible so much appreciation goes to them for producing what was truly a memorable event. Our thanks go out to all those who came to support the show and to those who danced along with us. The feedback received between family members, school staff as well as the general public has been totally overwhelming. It’s because of this support that Sister Act 2020 was such a fantastic experience. So in one final thanks and in the words of Deloris Van Cartier, “You guys are fabulous!” Carys Rosser-Stanford – Head Girl Photographs by Dan Minto

BOOK OF MONTH – KISS THE GIRLS AND MAKE THEM CRY by Mary Higgins Clark When investigative journalist Gina Kane receives an email from a ‘CRyan’ describing her ‘terrible experience’ while working at REL, a high-profile television news network, including the comment ‘and I’m not the only one,’ Gina knows she has to pursue the story. But when Ryan goes silent, Gina is shocked to discover the young woman has died tragically in a Jet Ski accident while on holiday. Meanwhile, REL counsel Michael Carter finds himself in a tricky spot. Several female employees have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct. Carter approaches the CEO, offering to persuade the victims to accept settlements in exchange for their silence. It’s a risky endeavour, but it could well make him rich. As more allegations emerge and the company’s IPO draws near, Carter’s attempts to keep the story from making headlines are matched only by Gina Kane’s determination to uncover the truth. Was Ryan’s death truly an accident? And when another accuser turns up dead, Gina realizes someone-or some people12 | seaside news

will go to depraved lengths to keep the story from seeing the light. The novels of Mary Higgins Clark are perfect for fans of Sabine Durant, Shari Lapena and everyone who loves a good mystery...

Have you ever just known what you wanted to do with your life? I haven’t. This has been the source of restlessness, stress, anxiety and why I have struggled to feel content. Having no direction is hard. But there was one thing niggling at the back of my mind that I wanted and never thought would happen: I wanted to write a book. So, my family said to go for it. And with their continuous love and support I made my dream a reality and have published my first book. It is set in Wales, in the Brecon Beacons, about a young woman who also struggles to feel content. She wants to find a way to escape from a place she knows she doesn’t belong, and as she goes back to her roots, she finds herself accidentally in a land that should only exist in a myth, somewhere else in time. So, if you would like to find out more, and help support a local author, go buy my book Somewhere in Time (by R.N.Davies), currently available on Amazon, and find out if she, like me, found her direction. Thanks to my family for believing in me.

Local history WILLIAMS & EVANS

Lady Charlotte Guest, married to the wealthy ironmaster, John Josiah Guest, had 10 children, was a noted philanthropist and translated the Mabinogion into English. We cruised down to the present past a range of writers, painters, actresses and sportswomen, culminating in Shirley Bassey. The next meeting is March 11th when Bev Gulley will talk on ‘Lloyd George knew my Father.’

FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS

Williams and Evans Menswear shop in Bridgend is celebrating 120 years of business. The doors were opened in March 1900 by two friends, Mr James Williams and Mr James Evans. They had trained as tailoring apprentices locally and were ready to open their own business at 2 and 4 Queen street. Williams and Evans have supplied quality men’s clothing through four generations of the same family. The premises have seen many changes; two world wars, two floods, six monarchs, 29 prime ministers and one Brexit! The 2nd generation involved three brothers; Jimmy, Clifford and Stanley. During World War 2, Jimmy continued to run the business whilst Clifford and Stanley served in the armed forces. In 1943 and 1961, the Ogmore River flooded the town centre including Williams and Evans, but the business survived and continued! Stanley’s late grandson, Edward, took over from 1990 to 2018 and it continues to be run by family members to this day. Williams and Evans would like to celebrate with old and new customers by offering up to 70% off selected items throughout the month of March. Visit now to be part of Williams and Evans history and see the eclectic selection of menswear clothing.

BRIDGEND HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The February meeting of the Bridgend Historical Society featured a well-researched and wide-ranging talk by Ceri Joseph on Inspirational Welsh Women through History. There’s only space to highlight a few of them. Nest ferch Rhys, born 1085, reputedly so beautiful that princes fought over her, was a distant ancestor of John F Kennedy. Elizabeth 1, who, of course was the granddaughter of Henry Vll, the Welsh founder of the Tudor dynasty, was born in Pembroke Castle, so she would have been eligible to play for Wales. Jemima Nicholas, heroine of the French invasion at Fishguard in 1797, rounded up 12 drunken French soldiers with a pitchfork and single-handedly drove them into town and imprisonment. Amy Dillwyn, of Swansea, took over her husband’s failing factory on his death and turned it around becoming a celebrated industrialist as well as a novelist. 22 | seaside news

HOW PORTHCAWL BECAME A GARRISON TOWN

Part 2 The inadequate supply of troops into the regular British Army contributed to defeat in the Second Boer War in 1899. The Imperial Yeomanry had been formed for service overseas but fell well short of rectifying the situation. In 1907, Reforms contained in the Haldane Act resulted in the re-modelling of existing Volunteer and Yeomanry Units into a new Territorial Force and disbanded the Militia to create a new Special Reserve of the Regular Army. It received Royal Assent on 2nd August 1907. The week before on 24th July, Viscount Haldane, who had been appointed Secretary of State for War in 1905, visited the South Wales Borderers Brigade Camp at Porthcawl. Viscount Haldane stayed at the Esplanade Hotel where he was met by Porthcawl Councillor Mr. John. L. Lambert who became Chairman of the PTC in 1909 and died in 1916 serving his country. In August 1908, 6000 men responded to Haldane’s appeal for the Welsh Division of the Territorial Force. 3000 were in camp at Porthcawl. Residents became used to seeing troops every summer. On 4th August 1914, 5000 troops were camped in the town when war was declared. During WW1 Porthcawl evolved into a Garrison Town with six battalions being formed here. Between the wars Porthcawl continued to host training camps and in WW2 welcomed Dutch, American and British troops. Ceri Joseph

School reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL

If you were lucky enough see our production of ‘Sister Act!’ at the Grand Pavilion, you may have noticed the school Health and Wellbeing Committee collecting there on behalf of the Bridgend Foodbank. Thank you to everyone who brought in donations, we were absolutely overwhelmed by support from parents and families, and from the wider community as a whole. On 28th January a group of volunteers from Bridgend Foodbank came to school to collect the donations. We were privileged recently to welcome Dr Martin Stern who came in to share his experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust. He chatted with Year 7 as part of the “Our World” project for the curriculum for Wales and the pupils were absolutely captivated by his presentation. He also spoke with Sixth Formers who gained an incredible ethical insight from listening to his experiences. We are so grateful that our pupils have been awarded this rare opportunity and thank Dr Stern very much for his visit. Pupils enjoyed various trips to Iceland and London at half term and the second half of this term continues to be busy with Awards Evening coming up on 17th March when we celebrate our pupils’ many and varied achievements. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

We have had another busy term at Porthcawl Primary. Every year we have an Aspire Day when our Year 5 and 6 children talk to people from a range of different jobs. On our last Aspire Day we had in a musician, a doctor, an architect, a nurse, a prison officer, a helicopter pilot and the Wales under 20 rugby captain. This term we have built on that day by having a visit from another former pupil, Osprey player Lloyd Ashley. Lloyd talked to our children about what it takes to be a professional athlete as well as taking a session on healthy living. Year 6 also got to show off their talents as they enjoyed a P.E. lesson with Lloyd. It is always great to see our former pupils and hear about the amazing things they are doing. If you are a former pupil and would like to come in for our next Aspire Day, please let us know. Finally, due to popular demand, we have another Open Day for Nursery on Thursday 27th February. If your child is due to start school within the next year or so, why not pop in either at 9.30am or 2.30pm for an hour? You can meet the staff, have a quick tour and spend time in our Nursery with your child. Come and see for yourself that we are a small and friendly school with high standards. If you fancy a visit – please ring us on 01656 815660 or email us via the school website. Jo Rowley - Head Teacher

THE BRIDGE

Our Community, Love it…Don’t Trash campaign! In a bid to tackle litter in the local area pupils in year 5 joined forces with their peers in local schools to engage in an educational project about litter. The ‘Our Community… love it, don’t trash it’ campaign was supported by Bridgend County Borough Council as well as Pyle and Kenfig Community Council. During the project pupils received free training about recycling from ADA Recycling and worked with Sea Quest to complete a beach survey and workshop. All pupils were invited to design a logo to display on local litterbins and marketing materials. The school Eco Council also played an active role in supporting the project through a local area litter survey. Representatives from year 5 spent an enjoyable morning at Bethlehem Life Centre presenting their project and findings to the deputy Mayor of Bridgend, Ken Watts, community councillors and local residents. The pupils plan to continue to monitor and promote clean and safe local environments.

Here at the Bridge, we visited the Aberfan Memorial Garden and final resting place of the children and adults lost in the terrible disaster. It was very moving. We were fortunate to meet two gentlemen who were young men when the disaster happened. They were able to share their experiences with us and we were very moved by what they had to say. KS2 and KS3 continue to attend Tondu Farm for their Forest Schools activities in our enrichment program, following Article 31 “ The right to relax and play and take part in activities”. KS4 are volunteering for the Bridgend Food Bank as part of their vocational studies. They are collecting suitable food to deliver to the Food Bank next term. If anyone would like to donate any long life food please bring it into The Bridge in the next few weeks. This ties in with Article 27 “ The right to a good standard of living”. Finally we would like to thank Mrs Joyner our acting head for all the hard work needed to keep our busy school happy. Ioan yr 7 Ashton yr 9

School reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL

Our Sixth Form students thoroughly enjoyed their business and cultural trip to Paris but we wish them luck as they now embark on some very serious revision over half term. Thank you to all Senior and Sixth Form parents who recently attended the Borneo 2021 information evening. Eye opening, challenging and truly life-changing; students will experience different cultures and environments whilst developing an array of life skills. Year 6 pupils from St Clare’s and other primaries thoroughly enjoyed their second Senior Transition Day and loved altheainspiring lessons including a Stop-Go animation workshop. We were delighted to welcome VIP, Mr Steven Knapik, WJEC Chief Examiner for Art and Design to officially open our fabulous new art facility. We are extremely proud of our Year 7 boys team who achieved third place in the Cross Country Championships in Margam Park. We also had a record turnout at the Junior Cross Country event at Porthcawl and all teams ran superbly. We are in a strong position in Bridgend’s league table. Any potential Senior or Sixth Form pupils are encouraged to book for our next Open evening on Wednesday, 11th March. Pupils’ postcards thank companies for cutting back on single-use plastics and ask other businesses to think about reducing their own

School-children are sending postcards to businesses thanking them for cutting back on single-use plastics and encouraging other companies to do more.

Cleaner streets operations officer John Rees with waste policy and performance officer Angela Tozer and six-year-old Isabelle with one of the postcards being sent to local and national companies Pupils’ postcards thank companies for cutting back on singleuse plastics and ask other businesses to think about reducing their own Pupils in Porthcawl primary schools are sending postcards to businesses in the town thanking them for cutting back on single-use plastics – and asking other firms to do all they can to stop using excess packaging. It comes after school-children played a key role in the town’s Love It, Don’t Trash It! campaign aimed at raising awareness of the effects of rubbish left both on the streets and on the beach. The campaign included a poster competition with the winning designs being turned into posters and placed on signs around the town. Now, following a workshop led by SeaQuest on reducing plastic in their day-to-day lives, children are writing postcards to businesses thanking them for the steps they have already taken to cut back on plastics or encouraging them to do more. Porthcawl is hoping to become the first plastic-free town in Bridgend. 28 | seaside news

Bridgend County Borough Council’s deputy leader Hywel Williams said: “Over the last few months, BCBC has been working with Porthcawl Town Council and Surfers Against Sewage calling on local businesses to stop using at least three single-use plastics. “It includes things like plastic straws, bottles and tops as well as cutlery, sauce sachets, drinking cups and bags which are some of the biggest offenders when it comes to littering with too many of them damaging the planet after finding their way into the world’s oceans. “Local businesses have shown a real commitment to cutting back on single-use plastics looking at what they can do differently. “The postcards are a way for children to have their say, sending a ‘thank you’ to the businesses that they choose, both local and national, who have made some lasting changes and encouraging others to think about what they can do to help the environment.” The postcards which depict the overall winning design in the poster competition can be hand-delivered, if based locally, or posted. Finnegans Fish Bar is among the businesses in Porthcawl to have taken action, using paper bags instead of plastic ones, while the Side Walk Café and the Cosy Corner restaurant have stopped using plastic straws. BCBC recently ran a free workshop with businesses in the town to look at how they can do things differently and what different types of packaging are out there. SeaQuest’s assistant manager Jo Taylor-King said: “Following the success of the Love It, Don’t Trash It! campaign SeaQuest are excited at the prospect of once again working with Bridgend County Borough Council on our shared goals of promoting the reduction of plastics in Porthcawl. “We always enjoy working with the young people of Porthcawl their enthusiasm is inspiring.” For more information, contact communications officer Elizabeth Bradfield on (01656) 643663 or Email: elizabeth.bradfield@bridgend.gov.uk Website: www.bridgend.gov.uk

Innovative new ‘chewing gum’ bins have been stuck on lampposts along John Street in Porthcawl as part of the latest move to encourage recycling and cut down on waste. As well as helping to prevent discarded chewing gum from forming an unsightly, hardto-remove stain, the bins are also a creative example of recycling in action as they are also made from recycled chewing gum. Once the ‘GumDrop Bins’ are full, they are taken away and everything is recycled to produce more bins as well as products such as wellie boots.

The continuing partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council and Porthcawl Town Council has led to Porthcawl becoming one of the first Welsh towns to have the innovative bins, but it’s not the only improvement helping to keep Porthcawl clean. Following discussions with local takeaway businesses, three dedicated bins will be added in the Western Promenade, John Street and Griffin Park areas to trial the recycling of fast food takeaway packaging. Thanks to funding from Welsh Government, the local authority will also soon be installing two water fountains along the seafront to help encourage people to carry reusable bottles which they can fill up with water for free rather than needing to buy single-use plastic bottles. Councillor Hywel Williams, the council’s Deputy Leader, said: “Chewing gum is a blight on our streets here, just as it is in every other town up and down the land. Gum is the second most common type of street litter after cigarette materials, and UK councils spend around £50m each year cleaning up the mess.

“So we really welcome the new GumDrop bins which offer a creative way of getting people to dispose of their gum responsibly. Everything gets recycled, including the bin, and then a new one is put in its place.” Councillor Williams added: “Early last year we launched our ‘Porthcawl – love it don’t trash it’ campaign which features posters designed by schoolchildren to help encourage residents and visitors to be responsible with their litter.

“We need to change people’s behaviour, and these new chewing gum bins, dedicated recycling bins and water stations are an extension of that initiative, helping to encourage everyone to do their bit to keep Porthcawl’s streets and beaches clean.” GumDrop bins have been created by British entrepreneur Anna Bullus. After researching the chemistry of chewing gum, and discovering that its main ingredient is a type of polymer similar to plastic, she realised that used chewing gum was a potentially useful material. The University of Winchester was one of the first places to sign up to use the bins, while Great Western Railway has installed them in more than 25 of its railway stations. WORKING TO KEEP THE COUNTY BOROUGH SAFE Bridgend County Borough recently weathered the latest in a series of winter storms, and as usual, our staff were out in the thick of it trying to keep roads clear and people safe. Our highway crews worked throughout the night preventing flooding and dealing with fallen trees, damaged signs, broken fences and more. The extremely high winds also caused problems with street lighting columns, with one coming down in South Cornelly and another, which was found sparking after sustaining substantial damage. We’ve all become used to seeing fantastic photographs of huge waves crashing over Porthcawl’s iconic breakwater and lighthouse, and this year was no exception. I was especially impressed with how the Town Beach sea defences and the boardwalk at Rest Bay stood up to everything that Mother Nature could throw at them. The boardwalk came in for a real battering as multiple sections of it became impassable beneath several tonnes of rocks, all of which had to be cleared, but thanks to its robust construction design, the boardwalk emerged unscathed. It’s easy to forget the council workers, firemen, policeman and others who help keep us safe during severe weather and I would like to thank them for all their efforts – truly a job well done. CHILDREN TAKE KEY ROLE IN ANTILITTERING CAMPAIGN Following its huge success in Porthcawl last year, the ‘Love It, Don’t Trash It!’ anti-litter campaign has been extended to other parts of the county borough. Hundreds of primary school pupils from Afon Y Felin, Cefn Cribwr, Corneli, Mynydd Cynffig, Pil and Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sger have joined in to learn about the effects of discarded rubbish on their communities. They have carried out surveys to find out which is the most common type of litter, have taken part in beach events organised by SeaQuest, and have designed colourful posters and slogans to encourage people to treat waste more responsibly. The winning design has been created by seven-year-old MazieMay from Mynydd Cynffig, and features the slogan ‘stop dropping, start picking’. Mazie-May’s design will now be seen on signs placed on bins and lampposts throughout Corneli, Pyle, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr as well as on a flyer, which will be delivered to households in the area. Part of a joint collaboration between Bridgend County Borough Council, Keep Wales Tidy, local town and community councils and SeaQuest, the project is currently working with schools in Brackla, and will soon be heading up the Ogmore Valley – well done to all concerned. INTRODUCTION May I introduce myself to readers of Seaside News. I am Jamie Wallis the new MP for the Bridgend and Porthcawl area and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all those who voted Conservative – many for the first time ever. But I will work as hard as I can for everyone in the constituency regardless of party allegiances. Westminster can be a daunting place with miles of corridors and hundreds of rooms. It is not called a palace for nothing! But as I get my office up and running and start dealing with the issues you are already raising, I will be fighting for a better future for the entire community. As we look ahead to a new decade and a future outside the EU, I want the 2020’s to be a decade of renewal and regeneration. I will work with Assembly members and councillors to secure the investment we need in the NHS, to bring in well-paid and highly skilled jobs and ensure that our young people get the education and training they need. I am holding surgeries across the constituency every Friday. I can be contacted on Jamie.wallis.mp@parliament.uk JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

TACKLING A VERY STICKY PROBLEM Innovative new chewing gum bins have been stuck on lampposts along John Street in Porthcawl as part of the latest move to encourage recycling and cut down on waste. While chewing gum is the second most common type of litter and forms an unsightly, hard-to-remove stain, the bins are a creative example of recycling in action as they are also made from recycled chewing gum. The continuing partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council and Porthcawl Town Council has led to Porthcawl becoming one of the first Welsh towns to feature the innovative bins, but it’s not the only improvement helping to keep Porthcawl clean and green. Following discussions with local takeaway businesses, three dedicated bins are being added in the Western Promenade, John Street and Griffin Park areas to trial the recycling of fast food takeaway packaging. And two water fountains are being provided at the seafront to help encourage people to carry reusable bottles instead of single-use plastics, and to fill up for free. We’ll be seeking to introduce further innovations, so look out for more news soon. COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk

TOWN CENTRE NEEDS RE-THINK FROM COUNCIL The loss of three major stores from Bridgend with the closure of Monsoon, Accessorise and Bon Marche will have a knock-on effect on other stores in the town. While high streets up and down the country are also suffering from store closures, this does not alter the fact that there are now fewer reasons for people to visit the town centre. Bridgend Town Council is arguing for a co-ordinated approach to be made with BCBC, traders and landlords working together to invite national retail chains not already in the town to come along and see what the area has to offer. I would agree that every effort must be made to fill these empty shops as quickly as possible but we need high-end retailers selling things like ladies’ fashions. Just having another pound shop or mobile phone store will do nothing for the town – Bridgend already has enough of them. I am having a meeting with Bridgend Council Leader Huw David shortly and will be raising these points with him. I will be arguing for a pro-active approach from BCBC, which should include a review of the availability and price of car parking in Bridgend town centre.

ST DAVID’S DAY

FEMALE EVOLUTION

WHAT ABOUT ME

March the first to many is just another date. Here in Wales it’s special, it’s a day we celebrate. Dydd Dewi Sant, Saint David’s Day, is a day when Wales rejoices. We sing our national anthem in our famed harmonic voices. Youngsters wear Welsh costumes as they trot off to school,

In days of old when men were bold, Women well, just slaves. The males, they went ahunting, Bring food back to the caves The years have passed, well centuries The female, in second place. She never wore the trousers, Well, she knew her place. I remember the time when ladies, Never frequented pubs. Men were so determined then, To keep them from their clubs A lot of water under the bridge has run, Those days are long gone past. So many changes we have seen. Moving oh so fast. Lawyers, high executives, PMs we’ve had two. Nothing now will stop them, The future will ensue. Who thought of women’s rugby teams, Girls with men’s physique Soccer internationals. Training every week. Pugilistic women, A sport that’s meant for men. Females on the canvas, Taking counts of ten. Well, you name careers, The female will compete. We always like to see them, Pretty, trim and neat. But, if they have a goal in mind, To further their career. Say, that you will help them, Otherwise, stay clear. Derek Evans, Pyle

Now that it is over and I have gone no pain left, no regrets and you too are glad that I have gone no embarrassment no more questions you are exonerated free to speak your words. Yes, I have done bad things no angel, no sweet daddy’s girl drugs, alcohol and bad, bad sex the many days with many men too many highs too many lows too few to care for me. When you looked at me what did you see another broken body beyond repair another piece of tarnished trash to throw away somewhere beneath there was me. Now they have come the rescuers with high morals indignant accusations and reprimands too late to rescue anyone now fallen beyond repair or resurrection they come with their justice when the guilty have long escaped. Well, what about me what about me. Malcolm Price, Porthcawl

A DECKCHAIR IN WINTER

EASTER ON THE GOWER

Bones of wood on the wave-tossed stones, Flapping canvas on a skeletal seat; Faded candy-stripe and candy floss, Helter-skelter shadow covering the dross;

Season of the wooden cross, Turquoise and daubed in white blossom, Of daffodils Bouncing like lambs’ tails in the March winds. Some pretty, lively little girls race the crystal waves Where Sissley’s rock lies brooding, Prancing, dancing in pink wellies Along the hissing, laughing, curling foam, Inviting, entrancing, the seaweed-hurling sea, While someone’s blowing bubbles below a terrace balcony. Freesia-scented airs Float across the raw and singing sands, Where darkly, winter-clad families cluster And sun-drenched, ragamuffin boys Shout along the shore. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

Teachers take their photos, so they feel pretty cool. Daffodils and leeks earn pride of place this day. Tasty Welsh cakes bless our tongues as we get underway. As for that Welsh dragon, he’s got pride of place once more. Welsh flags fly at full mast, where there were none before. We venerate St David, his memory prevails, So once a year we celebrate the patron saint of Wales. Judy Dee, Porthcawl

SEASONS How short the winter’s light, the nights so long Not sun, but moon, now greets at break of day When will we hear the birds break into song And bursting buds proclaim Spring on its way? For, cold or heat, the seasons’ cycle’s sure Seedtime and harvest while this earth endure The miracle of snowdrop from hard ground Or oak tree, gaunt and bare, fresh clothed in green The frog spawn in our ponds again be found While dormant creatures, waked, once more be seen Know Spring will not be chained by Winter’s band But bursts forth now new life on every hand Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

DOG OF THE MONTH - MOO

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

Moo is a bright five-year-old Border Collie who is looking for a quiet home in the countryside. She is a sensitive girl and is isn’t keen on loud noises so would love to live the rural life away from the hustle and bustle. Moo enjoys the company of dogs and could live with another calm dog in her new home. She’d love a large garden where she can play to her hearts content. Moo is a special girl who is looking for an adult-only home who have experience of Collies or of nervous dogs that need a bit of extra TLC. She’d like her new owners around for most of the day and can slowly build up the time being left. She is currently working with the rehoming centre’s behaviour team on the things that worry her and is doing really well so would love it if her new family could visit her multiple times to get to build up a trusting bond. Once she settles into her new home, Moo will be a fun and rewarding addition. For more information on Moo, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 338745. You can also visit our website at www.dogstrust.org.uk

We are very grateful for all the tools that have been donated but we are short of specific tools, woodworking and engineering vices, claw hammers, ‘G’ clamps and shovels. Thanks for all your monetary donations, we have recently replaced the wooden top on one of our benches and fitted new lighting over another bench. We had a drilling machine, linishing machine and a dust extractor donated, these are now in use. We also had a circular saw donated that we now use for making our crates – see photo. All the tools for the large project for Uganda were sent at the end of 2019. They left the U.K. in a 40ft container consisting of almost 8000 tools for various projects; many of our kits were included. The tools were unpacked in conjunction with our partner T.A. Crusade in Uganda ready to hand out to the trainees. The training for these people is all part of the project and includes business skills, accountancy, health and safety, hygiene etc. The tool kits will be used in many different work environments and in different sizes for example, kits for individuals, kits for groups and kits for training centres. The number of tools in these kits varies depending on the number of people using them, about 30 tools for an individual to about 160 tools for the training centre kits. In the last 12 months our group have sent shipments to, Ghana, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda, sending over 1000 refurbished tools in 25 kits. Two of our members, Rodney Knight and Mark James received their 10year certificate this week. Rodney manages all the tools that arrive and usually assembles the automotive, bicycle and motorbike kits. Mark can turn his hand to most jobs but particularly likes refurbishing vices. If you have any tools to donate please contact John – 01656 786367 David Cook Workshop Manager

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Peace, give me peace! This is definitely a statement we are hearing a lot more these days. With all the surrounding issues of life, people are longing for peace. The good news is that God wants to give us peace in three major areas of our life. Firstly, peace with God. The bible tells us that Jesus came to bring us back into relationship with God and there is great peace and a sense of wholeness from being in that relationship. We sense his smile over us and he actually gives us - his peace. We feel at rest with our maker. Secondly, peace with others. God can help us to do relationships well and therefore get along with people better. When we are at peace inside we are generally happier and therefore more able to love, support and help others. Thirdly, peace with yourself. All of us have done things that lay on our conscience and take away inner peace but God can take this away when we come into a relationship with him. All the above is possible from him who is above. That’s all we need to do is get into relationship with God. Neil Harvey

Club features DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE LIVING WITH PORTHCAWL VETERANS HUB SIGHT LOSS? It’s been a busy few months at the Veterans Hub. Would you like to be able to guide them safely and confidently? Guide Dogs Cymru is running a free training session for friends and family members at the Evergreen Hall in Bridgend on Wednesday March 4 from 2pm-4pm. The interactive session is designed to give people a better awareness of sight loss, plus tips on the correct way to support a vision impaired person. Karen Nicholas of Bridgend attended a session while husband Malcolm was waiting to be matched with a guide dog. She said: “You get lots of useful advice, and you are shown techniques to help you guide in a busy or narrow space. It was also good to meet the partners of other vision impaired people, and try on special spectacles that simulate different eye conditions.” Malcolm, now the owner of guide dog Marcus, said: “I found Karen’s guiding skills improved and she became much more aware. As a blind person I get mobility training, but that’s not the case for friends and family. They need to know what to do.” To take part, come along on March 4 or contact Steve Kersley on 07785 907728 or steve.kersley@guidedogs.org.uk Photo: Malcolm and Karen Nicholas with guide dog Marcus

On Christmas Day the Hub hosted Christmas Lunch for needy veterans who had nowhere to spend the day. Food was generously donated by the Porthcawl Co-op and cooked by members of the Hub committee. In total 17 veterans attended lunch and a good time was had by all. On January 4th, members carried out a litter pick in the wilderness area of Porthcawl. It was very successful with lots of bags of rubbish collected. We hope to do more in the future. Due to successful advertising we’ve welcomed lots of new visitors through our doors lately. Hopefully many of these will become full members. We’re currently planning an event to be held in Griffin Park on June 20th to celebrate Armed Forces Day. Our success means that we will now be able to open more often. On Wednesday 5th February, we began opening every other Wednesday from 9am – 1pm to offer advice, signposting and talks from guest speakers/advisors. Our first speaker was from Bridgend Carers. Our Saturday Naafi Break meetings will continue each week 9am-12pm. All veterans, serving military and family are welcome. Louise Magenty Membership Secretary

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My wife and I split up 8 years ago and divided our assets equally at that time. There are no pensions. We are still legally married. I now wish to file for Divorce as I have met another woman and wish to tie up all the loose ends. There are no children. Answer:You can file for Divorce on the “fact” of a 5 year separation and do not need to obtain your wife’s consent to the Divorce on this basis. It is relatively straight forward as you will not be citing any “blame” for the marriage breakdown which is always preferable, if at all possible. Your Divorce should take no more than 5 months to finalise. Our costs for a Divorce on this basis are £500 plus the Court fee of £550, that is, £1050. However, notwithstanding the fact that you carved up your assets at the time of separation, you should seek to agree with your wife a Clean Break Order which you can both enter into and which, once approved by a District Judge, will prevent you both from making a claim against the other at any time in the future both in life and death. Clean Break Orders can only be achieved if you have filed for Divorce and can be lodged with the Court at the Decree Nisi stage of the Divorce. However, please be aware that a Clean Break Order must be approved by a Judge who must consider it fair in all of the circumstances. I must stress that it is not simply a case of rubber stamping. The preparation of a Clean Break Order is generally a separate cost to the Divorce and charged at an hourly rate but is something you would be foolish not to pursue. WHAT TO DO WHEN SOMEONE CLOSE TO ME DIES. If a family member has died but you cannot find a will, you should make sure you have checked thoroughly: • Search the house and any paperwork. • Contact any solicitors or other professional advisers you know they used. • Consider searching the National Will Register, which may provide a record if a solicitor holds her will. • Ask their bank in case they have the will. • Consider searching at the Probate Registry in case they have the will in safe-keeping. • Ask any other family or friends who you think might know. If you still can’t find a Will, you may need to assume that it doesn’t exist and that person died ‘intestate’. If so, you can apply to the Probate Registry for a ‘Grant of Letters of Administration’ or ask your solicitor to do this on your behalf. If you do locate a Will, you will need to ascertain who are appointed as the executors, this gives them authority to deal with the estate by collecting in all assets, applying for Grant of Probate, selling or transferring Property/Land and distributing the assets in accordance with the Will. It will also be the executors who notify the beneficiaries of their entitlement to the estate. The Will may specifically detail who is entitled to what personal items (Jewellery, Panting etc) however often it may say ‘All personal chattels to be distributed between my children equally.’ Or it may be silent on this issue altogether and this is when problems normally arise particularly if these have sentimental value. It can help to have everything valued (some items may already have been valued as part of the process of working out any inheritance tax payable). After all, there is little point arguing over who gets something if it isn’t worth more to you than it could be sold for. You might then be able to work out a system for sharing the other items out. For example, you might take it in turns to each pick something you want or you could ‘auction’ the items among yourselves, with the winning bidder for each item agreeing to accept a proportionately smaller share of any cash. Once agreement has been reached, then the remaining estate can be distributed in accordance with the Will once the monies and assets have been called in, and debts from the estate paid. SEPARATION AND DIVORCE Divorce is one of the most stressful and emotionally difficult life events. Getting the right advice can help guide you through the divorce process. At the point of separation, the family home can be an emotionally charged environment. You might want to leave the family home or you might want your partner to leave. However, before moving out, consider the following: • Do you or your partner have an alternative place to go, somewhere that meets your needs and your children’s needs? • What is best for your children? If possible, you should aim for as little upheaval as possible – so that the children can remain close to their school, their friends and their childcare. Being close to your support network and to your work will also be important. • Safety: if you are in an abusive relationship, your safety and your children’s safety should be your paramount concern. It is possible to apply to a divorce court for an occupation order, which is an order excluding your partner from the house. Should you consider this step necessary, specialist advice is crucial. For separating parents, sorting out the arrangements for their children can be highly emotionally charged, making it difficult to agree – particularly in the early stages. In time, hopefully the practicalities of child care can be discussed and agreed upon freely. If you still cannot come to an agreement then mediation should be considered. Counselling can also be very valuable in some cases, which you can attend together or separately. Speaking to someone about the breakdown of the relationship might help you put matters in perspective and make speaking with your expartner easier. You can also consider family therapy. Although there will be some circumstances where court intervention is required, going to court should be a last resort. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS As I write this we are suffering from Storm Ciara . Hope March will bring us better weather! We have enjoyed a lunch at Finnegans and our games and craft groups have been active. We are looking forward to our Birthday lunch at the Grove. How the years fly by! I think this will be our 86th birthday but I stand to be corrected! Our meeting this month is on March 11th 2.0 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall. It will be our AGM which can be interesting for visitors to come along and find out what we have been doing over the last year and decide if you would like to join us! We are also pleased to have Porthcawl National Coastwatch Institution coming to show us a video of their work. You may remember we gave them a cheque for £500 in January the proceeds of our Christmas Fayre. This will be very interesting as it is an increasingly busy organisation. SKER WI- A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

NEWTON WI The February meeting was a very busy evening, where we welcomed three new members and two prospective members. The G.F.W.I. News letter was discussed and forthcoming events noted. Our speaker this month was a very interesting and talented lady Helen Latimet a Puppeteer. Helen gave us a brief history of how she became a puppeteer and teacher, working mainly with children but also involved in TV work. She had an amazing gift of bringing the puppets to life with member’s participation creating a great deal of fun and laughter. The Christmas dinner at the Grove Golf Club on Jan 15th was a successful evening with great food and wonderful entertainment from the Porthcawl Ukulele Bandits. On January 25th all our members were treated to a trip to the Porthcawl Comprehensive School Show at the Pavilion, what a fantastic time we had the show was truly amazing. This months special birthday was Shirley’s 80th celebrated with a delicious cake. Get well wishes go to our Secretary Glenys, also other members who are poorly this month, we hope they will be better very soon. M. Freeman

On Thursday 13th February, Vice President, Leslie Davies, welcomed Sker WI members, and two guests, to an evening guaranteed to evoke memories both happy and sometimes bittersweet. Following the business of the meeting, which included voting on this year’s resolutions, one of our own members, Judith Morris, gave a presentation entitled “Wedding Memories and Memorabilia”. Judith had collected photographs and memorabilia from members and presented them as a slide show presentation. Her presentation was accompanied by a ‘show and tell’ by members of wedding related stories and memorabilia from poetry to cake decorations. Included in the ‘show and tell’ were two wedding dresses whose owners sadly declined to model them for the event. At the end of a very enjoyable evening, Judith thanked everyone for their interesting contributions and also thanked her husband, Trevor, for providing technical support in helping to produce the presentation. During the course of the evening, members took time out to remember our Secretary, Cynthia Sidey who very sadly had to say goodbye this week to her beloved husband, Paul. A collection was made on the night and will be presented to the Alzheimer’s Society in hi s memory. Sker WI meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7pm. We meet at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage Village. Visitors are always welcome, so why not come along and say hello. You can also find us on Facebook at SkerWI@nottagevillage Christine Beynon Sker WI

Business & finance MONEY TO BURN? WHY?

LIFETIME MORTGAGE

Several times a year through this column I remind people that if their fixed rate deal has ended and they are sat on their lender’s SVR – Standard Variable Rate – they could be losing out on many hundreds of pounds each year, running into thousands over the remaining term of the mortgage. Mortgage lending has never been cheaper but many people are simply complacent when their deal ends. They take the view that if it’s affordable why go to the hassle (as they see it) of looking around elsewhere for a new deal. Well, they don’t have to, because we do it all for them. At the time of writing, I’ve just seen a lady with a mortgage that she hasn’t reviewed for 9 years – her cheap deal finished FOUR years ago and she’s been paying SVR ever since. When I showed her that we could arrange to switch her to a cheaper lender where the interest rate was nearly FOUR PER CENT cheaper, she was astounded and the savings she would make would be substantial – well they would be! Like everything in life, we need to keep an eye on everything, as competition in every market drives prices and costs and the mortgage market is no different. The competition for your business is intense and whilst, yes, the rules for borrowing have been somewhat tightened, huge numbers of people are still able to qualify for a better deal, either with the same lender or a different lender. The lady in the example was with a lender that wasn’t able to offer a new deal when she enquired, so we switched her borrowing elsewhere, no hassle for her as we did all the work, whilst she happily gets on with her everyday life, a job and Family to attend to. For us to look at YOUR situation - whatever your age, yes even over the age of 60, costs you nothing, not a penny. We will happily do the research for you free of charge. All YOU have to do is pick up the phone and give us chapter and verse and we’ll do the rest. 01656 782545 or 07768 418308, whether residential or rental properties – if it’s do-able, we’ll do it! All loans are subject to status of course, even if you’ve had credit blips in the past, we may still be able to assist, so make that call.

More people are choosing a Lifetime Mortgage to cash in their bricks & mortar rather than move home! No evidence of income is required so it’s no surprise there has been a significant rise in the number of people over 55 using lifetime mortgages to release equity from their homes. Take for example clients of ours who wanted £30,000 for a new kitchen & bathroom but could not afford the repayments of £600 per month on a bank loan. They were able to release the funds from their house at a cost of £100 per month and then have the choice of whether to pay the interest or have it added to the loan and let it roll up. In this example the work was carried out without it having to eat into retirement income. So what are the hard facts? Well, gone are the days where you have to worry about the mortgage growing larger than the value of your home. Lenders now have to provide protection in the form of No Negative Equity Guarantees, which basically means the mortgage, cannot increase beyond the value of your property and leave you homeless. Another major improvement is, you can draw funds in stages at different times for several needs so this flexibility means your funds last longer by not taking the maximum at outset. What also surprises a lot of our clients is the fact that interest rates offered by lifetime mortgage providers are surprisingly competitive and as good as mainstream lending. You also now have the option to lock in a certain percentage of your property value using the Guaranteed Inheritance option so if you wanted to protect some of you house value for your children you can! There are lots of different providers each with varying incentives so we can compare all of these for you to ensure you get the best deal out there. Just remember this form of capital raising isn’t for everyone, which is why you might like to see more case studies to see if this could work for you. To discuss your options please call Abacus Assurance. Abacus Assurance FS Ltd is Authorised and Regulated by the financial Conduct Authority. A lifetime mortgage is secured against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

Gardening advice CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB “March – that month of wind and taxes, the wind will disappear but the taxes last us all the year” (Ogden Nash) Nevertheless by mid-March we are ready to welcome spring, a happy hopeful time for us gardeners! March is ‘pruning month’ so get out the secateurs and start clipping, lavatera, roses, hydrangeas and buddleia all love a good haircut, don’t panic if you go overboard with the buddleia, it is a vigorous shrub and will quickly regrow bearing lots of lovely purple flowers which is a butterfly’s favourite colour! If your spring bulbs have not flowered (which is very disappointing after all that hard work in autumn!) the most common reason is because they’ve been planted to shallow. If the plant is in leaf but not flower, dig it up and replant it at a greater depth (3 X their height). Good luck, it’s not too late. Tulips are best treated as an annual - though just keep hoping for a repeat performance! As the soil warms up so do our slimy friends, munching away on tender new shoots don’t you just love them! But did you know slugs have 27,000 microscopic teeth - don’t really stand a chance do we! Chris Early

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER By now I think those who did the Step Up For January challenge have recovered from the amazing achievement that was walking 372,000 plus steps in January. We also managed to raise £1,200. We are so pleased with this figure as this is the first time we’ve done this walk. There’s only VIP tickets available for our charity ball which this year is the earlier date of 25 April at The Bear Hotel in Cowbridge, if you would like to have a fantastic night then go to www.costofcancer.org.uk/events where you can purchase your tickets. There’s a VIP reception 3 course meal and wine on the table and all for £75 per person. We’re also in the middle of organising for our annual Valleys to Coast Walk which will be going from Blaengarw down to Porthcawl Rugby Club on the 8th August. Registration for this will be open soon. If you know of anyone who’s going through treatment for cancer and you know they’re finding life tough with finances, then please do tell them about us. This time next month will be hectic as the ball will be days away, so I shall speak to you all then. Have a great March. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

CHILDREN AND ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS As dangerous as EMFs are to adults, animals, plants, bees and microbes, they pose an exceptional risk for children for several reasons: Children will be exposed to EMFs for a much longer time than adults. Children under 12 years of age have higher body water content than adults, which allows them to absorb considerably more radiation. A child’s bone marrow absorbs 10 times more wireless radiation than an adult’s. Because a child’s skull is thinner, more cell phone radiation can penetrate deeply into the brain. Children’s still-developing brains (until their teens) are more susceptible to radiation absorption. A child’s developing nervous system is potentially more susceptible to a damaging agent. MEDITATION RETREAT Last month we had our first weekend meditation retreat. The theme being - How the mind becomes overwhelmed with the floods of experience. Participation was supported with personal stories, contemplation and meditation. We are fortunate in that our coming together is supported by the generosity and intention of many people. We have a lovely quiet room, grounds, the offer of freshly prepared food and clear guidance. It is great to be back offering and facilitating meditation days at a temple. Thus making sure that ‘Mindfulness’ is given the full perspective that it is worthy and noble of. We give our intention to a freely offered and delivered meditation day for no charge at all. No expectation, it’s simply come along. We are preparing to organise some forthcoming meditation days for March and May. If you would like to come along, please contact me on my email: evansneville@aol.com Some words from the Pali Cannon: “And what is meant by admirable friendship? There is the case where a layperson, in whatever town or village he may dwell, spends time with householders or householders’ sons, young or old, who are advanced in virtue. He talks with them, engages them in discussions. He emulates consummate conviction in those who are consummate in conviction, consummate virtue in those who are consummate in virtue, consummate generosity in those who are consummate in generosity, and consummate discernment in those who are consummate in discernment. This is called admirable friendship.” AN 8.54

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

The choir has had a great start to 2020 with performances at amazing venues, to international audiences. Our concert in magnificent Assembly room of the Edwardian Baroque Cardiff City Hall for the Cardiff University Business School saw the choir perform to a truly international audience. Over 300 students and staff thoroughly enjoyed an eclectic mix of musical pieces. ‘Lifted the roof off’ was part of the fantastic feedback we received on social media from the University. We look forward to performing to them again next month. Despite the ravages of storm Ciara and missing choir members stranded in various locations, our concert in the Gothic revival Cardiff Castle apartments for Aston Martin, to an audience of Japanese business people, was wonderfully well received. The audience was unaware of the choir until the doors to the reception room swung open and were overwhelmed with a rousing rendition of Rachie, ‘I bob un’. Further welsh classics entertained the very receptive and appreciative audience. Our calendar for the year is filling up with more great venues and audiences to look forward to in our 40th anniversary. Check out the history of the choir on our website porthcawlmalechoir.co.uk

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Glad to hear The X-Factor has been axed this year and hopefully forever. Ratings had fallen to just a few million and let’s hope Simon Cowell’s other flop, Britain’s Got (No!) Talent, follows suit. He’s been flogging a dead horse long enough and I’ve had an overdose of singing and dancing dogs! Cult Italian prog rock band Frank Carducci and the Fantastic Squad has a 10-date British tour including a Welsh date at The Picton Hotel, Porthcawl on Friday March 20th. They are supported by the brilliant Last Flight to Pluto, who are tipped for Big Things. This is a one-off gig, so get your tickets now. One of 52 | seaside news

our best local musicians, Adrian Hooper, who plays keyboard in the band Prognosis, is currently out of action but myself and all the team wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back performing. Sad to hear Burke Shelley, bassist with the legendary Budgie, has a life-threatening illness – he’s been unable to perform and sing after an aortic aneurysm in 2010. Budgie were a huge influence on my music career and big groups like Metallica, Maiden and Van Halen have all covered their songs. I’ve met Burke several times and wish him all the best. Deadline date for the April issue is: Sunday 15th March A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Filming got under way on documentary production “The Mystery of the Llandow Air Disaster” on Friday 7th February, with a scene at Cardiff Airport showing Welsh rugby supporters flying to Dublin on a chartered airliner for the Six Nations match, seventy years after 80 people died in a horrific crash on their return trip having seen Wales win the Triple Crown in March 1950. Apart from locations in towns and villages across the South Wales valleys, my film unit will be travelling to Shepperton and Kenley in the Home Counties as well as Lincolnshire in what seems likely to be a hectic Spring, followed by special effects and studio-based rostrum photography in early Summer. Many people in this locality are completely unaware – except for readers of Seaside News, of course – that Sigingstone village near Llandow was the scene of what was then the world’s worst air disaster, and although rugby football forms the allimportant backdrop to the story, there is an equally fascinating aeronautical angle to what happened on that ill-fated flight seven decades ago, and the film sets out to explore not only the event itself but also the aviation side of the tragedy. PYLE & PORTHCAWL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY We recently held our annual Club Competition Three, which is split into two sections, Prints and Digital Images, with a trophy for each. Members were allowed two entries into each section. Gareth Martin from Port Talbot judged both competitions, and not only awarded the points, but also provided an excellent critique on each image. The winner of the Print Trophy was Heather Roper with “Coal Tit” The winner of the Digital Trophy was Howard Evans with “Look!” Congratulations to both Heather and Howard for winning and a big thank you to all participants for making it such an interesting and entertaining evening. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, it’s all very informal so if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton CF36 5NR. School-children take key role in anti-littering campaign Hundreds of pupils in Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cefn Cribwr have been busy taking part in an anti-littering campaign, learning about the effects of rubbish left discarded both in their community and on the beach. The 12-week project which took place in six primary schools is part of the ‘Our Community… Love It, Don’t Trash It!’ campaign. It has been a joint collaboration between Bridgend County Borough Council, Keep Wales Tidy and the local Corneli, Cefn Cribwr and Pyle community councils, together with SeaQuest. As part of the project, children took part in a survey around nearby streets and parks, recording all the different types of litter they found, and doing their own litter pick. Meanwhile around 250 children took part in one of SeaQuest’s beach days. They then used their experiences as inspiration to create posters urging people to not drop litter and highlighting the consequences of it. Featuring colourful artwork and creative slogans encouraging residents and visitors to bin their waste, the posters will soon appear around the area. The overall winning design – created by seven-year-old MazieMay from Mynydd Cynffig – contrasts two scenes, one with litter and one without, next to the slogan ‘Stop dropping, start picking’. Mazie-May’s design will now be seen on signs placed onto the bins and lamp-posts throughout Corneli, Pyle, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr. Mynydd Cynffig Primary School pupil Mazie-May was the overall winner of Bridgend County Borough Council’s ‘Our Community... Love It, Don’t Trash It!’ poster competition. It is also set to appear on a flyer which will be delivered to households in the area. The project ended with a special event on Friday, January 31 when children presented their findings from the campaign to local dignitaries in the Bethlehem Church Life Centre, Cefn Cribwr. Bridgend County Borough Council’s deputy leader Hywel Williams said: “It has been wonderful to see the children’s enthusiasm for this project and their creative designs which will now be turned into signs and placed across their community.

“There is no excuse when it comes to dropping litter and I hope their message will inspire others to keep their community clean and tidy.”

School-children with their winning poster designs, and Bridgend County Borough Council’s deputy mayor Ken Watts Brian Jones from Keep Wales Tidy said the children had loved learning about their local environment. He said: “There’s been a great response to the campaign, children have really enjoyed the opportunity to get out into their community and onto the beach, where they see the consequences of littering in different environments. “For the winner of the poster competition, seeing their design turned into signs is amazing with all the feedback that comes from their family and friends.” Jo Taylor-King, assistant manager of SeaQuest, said: “SeaQuest have been delighted to see such a magnificent response to the Love It, Don’t Trash It! campaign which has highlighted the issues of public litter in our communities, and raised awareness of the impact of litter on our marine environment. “Over 250 children participated in our interactive beach-based workshop and have gone on to produce some incredible thoughtprovoking posters.” The primary schools which took part in the project involved Afon Y Felin, Cefn Cribwr, Corneli, Mynydd Cynffig, Pil and Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sger. Each school has been given a litter picking kit so schools can continue taking care of their local area. The ‘Love It, Don’t Trash It!’ campaign which first began in Porthcawl last year is moving across the county, with schools in Brackla currently participating in the project and another planned later this year in the Ogmore Vale called Our Valley. Sport reports NOTTAGE PRIMARY WIN RUGBY TOURNAMENT

Friday 24th January 2020, Nottage Primary Rugby team made the short but soggy walk to Porthcawl RFC for the annual Keith Grice Memorial 10 a-side Tournament. The team were nervous with excitement but once they were underway after a few inspirational words from Mr O’Neill and Mr Owen there was no stopping them! They played every match like it was the Six Nations with the passion and pride of the National team. They seemed to become more cohesive as the day unfolded, and once they were through to the final against Cwmfelin, they put in a performance to be proud of. The pace instigated by Rhys Evans at the base of each breakdown, conducting the backline with Josh Sealy to cut through the defence at every opportunity. Aston Bevington scoring an incredible hatrick and every player making their presence felt to round off a resounding victory. Bendegedig! We are honoured and privileged to represent Bridgend against the best schools in Wales at the Wales National Tournament.

email your sport report info@seasidenews.co.uk The nipper’s success came only a weekend after the success of the juniors, seniors and masters too. Pen y Bont’s junior members competed hard and came away with third place overall; some of the older juniors also came away with times to scare the senior members! The senior section also competed extremely well (with a fair few masters mixing it up in the relays, showing they’ve still got it!) and came second overall, though they were beaten by an English lifesaving club meaning they had first in Wales. The masters, like the nippers, had first overall too! All of these great performances meant that Pen y Bont SLSC retained the Wilkinson Sword, which is a huge achievement and the best way to kick off what looks to be a promising season of competing and lifesaving. CHAMPIONS AT THE START OF THE DECADE

Pen y Bont SLSC’s nipper, junior, senior and masters members have recently had huge success in the annual SLSA Wales Stillwater Championships. The nipper section competed outstandingly: they won overall! They earnt an astounding 1360 points, over one hundred more than second place. Not only does this speak to their talent and potential for the future as they progress to juniors and seniors, but also their teamwork and determination. They had great fun competing too, which is the most important thing. 60 | seaside news

There were plenty of individual performances of note since the start of the year and congratulations to all those who won awards. However Porthcawl Runners is not only a club for individual excellence but also a club for the running community as a whole. This is why we decided to celebrate Porthcawl Parkrun’s 350th event by providing a PA for the race organisers to keep in order to be heard due to its growing popularity. On this occasion we also provided pacers for virtually every minute of the race in order to help all parkrunners try to achieve their personal best times. The club provided over 50 volunteers and hopefully due to their efforts there was an astounding 122 PBs recorded that day. This undertaking was all overseen by the keen logistical eye of Lucy Jones who one day hopes to be as good at running as she is at planning. We are now looking forward to welcoming a fresh intake of runners with a new couch to 5K course starting in March and we have the final West Glam Cross Country race of the season where the Ladies team can guarantee promotion by winning their division. If you want to be a part of this running revolution, just find someone wearing a green Porthcawl Runners top and have a chat. Nick Middleton
