RE: SPENDING A PENNY Dear Editor, In your March issue (p.10), in a personal capacity, I wrote a light-hearted letter in response to a student I remember from Porthcawl Comprehensive School, who was interested in the 2019 buying power of a Victorian penny. In your April issue (p.8) a correspondent chose to comment, signing in his capacity as a Porthcawl Town Councillor I have contacted this person directly but as of now had no reply. I won’t enter into a prolonged exchange, as this would simply flatter and reward his mean-spirited behaviour. However, I wish to correct one of his factual errors: in no part of my letter was I “advising Porthcawl Town Council” about anything. If readers wish they can consult both issues of Seaside News on your website, compare the tone and content of the two letters, and draw their own conclusions. Finally, may I thank Rhyd Lewis and Trefor Davies for their correspondence and information about the old railway tunnel under Nottage. This is an important piece of local history, which is of great general interest. Such items are one of the many great strengths of your excellent Seaside News. Petty, party-political bickering is rather less valuable. Dr. Charles Smith Bridgend

COMMEMORATE AMERICANS IN PORTHCAWL? Dear Editor, Watching the Welsh News, we were touched by the West Wales people wanting to erect a memorial to the Americans during the 2nd World War. However, when we were in Ouray, Colorado about 15 years ago we met an American guy. It was snowing and it was May. We were drinking coffee when we heard an American voice saying Porthcawl. We immediately got up and went to talk to him. He asked us if the red telephone box was still on the front. I told him it was not. The man then told us that all the US soldiers used to use that phone to phone their girlfriends. I think the Americans should be commemorated in Porthcawl too. What do you think? Philippa G David Porthcawl
NOTTAGE RAILWAY TUNNEL Dear Editor, With reference to Trevor Davies excellent information on the tunnel under Nottage, I often wonder what happened to it when the line closed in 1962. As a small boy growing up in Nottage, in the mid sixties, I recall seeing the entrance, particularly on the “Moor Lane” side, with what seemed like huge doors firmly closing the tunnel. Does the tunnel still exist? Was it filled in? Presumably “65 yards” of tunnelling through solid rock, was quite an engineering feat when it was constructed, and its demise remains a mystery. I wonder if any of your readers have any information around this once vital transport link in the history of Porthcawl. Leyton Thomas Nottage Resident

Your views DEAR RESIDENTS OF PORTHCAWL Hello, my name is Macey. I am writing today because I am a worried student at an amazing school. I am 11 years old and this term we have been studying ‘Incredible Oceans’. Imagine the ocean with no plastic, when fish roamed, when colours dazzled the eye: this is a dream. In Porthcawl we are using 1 ton of plastic a day. Do you use single use plastic? Per year we use 550 billion straws in the UK and USA. Do you think this is acceptable? In my opinion plastic is vile for our ocean. Plastic is killing our sea life in our ocean. By 2050 there will be more plastic then fish in the ocean. These innocent sea creatures are mistaking plastic for food such as jellyfish and turtles. Under the ocean, there are colours that dazzle the eye but there is also a garbage soup of plastic. Pollution is killing our sea life. We can make a change! Can you make a change? Although we use plastic a lot it ends up in our ocean making it a toxic place to live! Plastic is slaughtering our ‘Incredible Ocean’s’ that were once an unbelievable ocean. If we did not use plastic, if plastic was not real, if we changed and did not use single use plastic: then our ocean would be majestic. It is not too late to take action. I would be very proud of you if you tried not to use plastic straws or plastic bags. It would be very good if Porthcawl Town Council could help the local shops to support this issue by providing all coffee shops with paper straws and bags. It would have a massive impact on our environment. Furthermore, the customers we have in Porthcawl will be very happy with you for taking action and they will want to spend more time and money in Porthcawl. Macey, Year 6 West Park Primary School
REGENERATION Dear Editor, It would appear that all the regeneration ideas put forward by the BCBC for Porthcawl are to change the town from a seaside resort for visiting families to one which is full of residential and business properties to bring in more and more council tax to the BCBC coffers. Maybe the BCBC should ask the people of Porthcawl what they would like or maybe they could read the letter by Mr John Jenkins in the January issue of the seaside news number 228 as this may give them some acceptable ideas. John Finney Porthcawl

SEASIDE STRATEGY Dear Editor, The UK government has had modern Seaside Strategies in place since the government of Gordon Brown. The Welsh Conservative party issued a Seaside Strategy in February 2016 ‘’To unlock the unfulfilled potential of Wales’ seaside towns and resorts. This document in particular also points out the need for improving access to public toilets and adequate parking provision. Both of these documents provide advice and guidance on getting the best out of our seaside resorts for the benefit of those living there and for the many thousands of people from within and outside the county lines. While BCBC have their plan for Porthcawl it is not a strategy. It is likely to maximise short term financial gain at the cost of the long term decline in daily tourism. BCBC do not have a large coastline. A Seaside Strategy by them to show how they can increase tourism by making areas attractive to visit with basic facilities such as adequate parking, toilets and amenities associated with a thriving seaside resort, would be most welcome. David Jones Porthcawl
RE: CLEAN UP PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, May I through ‘Your Views’ respond to the letter from J Mackin who kindly took the time to write in about his concerns regarding dog mess. The writer is quite right in that huge amounts of time , effort and money is being invested in making Porthcawl a better place to work, live and visit yet a few irresponsible dog owners are not only making this harder they are also costing themselves and fellow tax payers significant sums to clear up after them. The big issue facing nearly every area of the UK (I suspect Berkshire as well ) is how to change the mindset of irresponsible dog owners without unnecessarily penalising the vast majority of very responsible dog owners Irresponsible dog owners tend to be ‘creatures of night’ so we are having to start employing night-time patrols. Working together the Town and County Borough Councils have installed over 100 additional bins across the town, publicity events have been held across all schools and the problem has been well aired in the media over long periods. The County Borough Council is now preparing to implement and new enforcement regime with appropriate staff resources being taken on. It will very soon be an offence to be walking a dog without carrying the means (normally a doggy bag) to pick up dog waste. We will be urging rigid enforcement of fines. If only dogs could read!! BOOK OF THE MONTH Black Berry and Wild Rose by Sonia Velton For fans of Jessie Burton and Tracy Chevalier, a rich historical debut set among the Huguenot silk weavers of Spitalfields in the late 18th century. When Esther Thorel, the wife of a Huguenot silk weaver, rescues Sara Kemp from a brothel she thinks she is doing God’s will. Sara is not convinced being a maid is better than being a whore, but the chance to escape her grasping madam is too good to refuse. Inside the Thorels’ tall house in Spitalfields, where the strange cadence of the looms fills the attic, the two women forge an uneasy relationship. The physical intimacies of washing and dressing belie the reality: Sara despises her mistress’ blindness to the hypocrisy of her household while Esther is too wrapped up in her own secrets to see Sara as anything more than another charitable cause. 16 | seaside news
It is silk that has Esther so distracted. For years she has painted her own designs, dreaming that one day her husband will weave them into reality. When he laughs at her ambition, she unwittingly sets in motion events that will change the fate of the whole Thorel household and set the scene for a devastating day of reckoning between her and Sara. The price of a piece of silk may prove more than either is able to pay.

BRIDGEND & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY AGM The AGM of the Bridgend and District Local History Society took place on 10/4/19, where the committee agreed to stand again in their roles and were unanimously re-elected. There followed two short talks by members. The first, by Ian Hutchinson, covered Newton’s Weare House, from the 17th century, when Newton was a busy port, to the 19th century when it became the Newton Bathing House, rented by the week for bathing parties. Ian shared Donovan’s account of his travels in the area in the early 1800s when he came across a large party of ladies bathing naked and were assured that such practices were very prevalent in these parts. The house is, alas, no more. John James gave an account of Cyril Kieft, a local engineer and entrepreneur now largely forgotten. Kieft set up the first factory on the industrial estate post WW2 making household items in aluminium following an illustrious career as a manager in major iron and steel works. His first love was motorsport and he built and raced his own formula three cars, even building a formula 1 car in 1954, which for various reasons, only competed 20 years later. Next meeting 11/9/2019 at Carnegie House.
PORTHCAWL LITTLE THEATRE
Porthcawl Little Theatre was formed in 1948, with a junior section being established the following year. It was an amalgamation of Porthcawl Players and Porthcawl Play -reading Society. Until 1954, meetings and rehearsals were held at Highfield Church, with performances presented at the Grand Pavilion. ( Until 1918, the Highfield Church building had housed the original Pavilion) In 1954, the Porthcawl Urban District Council invited P.L.T. to avail themselves of the new facilities on offer at the newly opened Nottage Primary School; which were a large hall with a stage, two large dressing rooms behind and a lighting room upstairs at the back of the hall. Consequently, plays were performed annually at the school, plus a performance of the summer play at the Pavilion, for the Porthcawl Civic Week Festival. In later years all productions were staged at the Grand Pavilion. Following the arrangement with Nottage P.S. ending early in the 1990’s, future rehearsals were held at Porthcawl Comprehensive School. Sadly, by 1998 membership had dwindled and Porthcawl Little Theatre ceased to be active. Yet, its legacy lives on through Ruth Jones, Jason Hughes, Rob Wilfort, Owen Teale and Roger Burnell; all of whom benefitted from the experience they gained from being members of Porthcawl Little Theatre. Year 5 and 6 visited Techniquest in Cardiff Bay recently. The children explored the ‘hands on’ exhibits and were really impressed with the new interactive, large screen display! Both classes were able to watch and participate in an excellent ‘forces’ workshop run by the Techniquest staff. A fun and exciting learning experience was had by all! The Criw Cymraeg have been enjoying learning some Welsh yard games recently. They have had lots of fun teaching them to Reception and Year 1 children over the last two weeks. Their favourites have been “Faint o’r gloch ydy hi Mistar Blaidd?” What’s the time Mr Wolf? and “Mae Seimon yn dweud!” - Simon says. The Criw Cymraeg look forward to playing these games with Year 2 and Nursery over the next few weeks. Neil Price Head Teacher
BRYNTEG SCHOOL On 5th April two year 9 pupils Luke Harry and April Davies both represented Brynteg School in the ESU Performing Shakespeare competition which was held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. Congratulations to Luke and April who both successfully won the Welsh National Final, they will now travel to London in June for the Grand Final. Good luck to you both! Also in April Dr Suzanna Kean from the University of South Wales visited Brynteg School with a ‘Spectroscopy in a Suitcase’ workshop. Dr Suzanna Kean and her team of undergraduates delivered an invaluable seminar and interactive workshop on Spectroscopy to all our Year 12 and Year 13 chemistry students. With the knowledge, analytical skills and hands on experience acquired, our pupils were able to problem solve and identify a number of unknown compounds. This was an excellent revision opportunity for their forthcoming exams. J L Davies Marketing & Communications
LOVE IT DON’T TRASH IT
The Eco Committee of Nottage Primary have been working really hard to spread awareness of the problem of litter in Porthcawl. The school took part in lots of competitions. The Eco committee collaborated to write an acrostic poem to go on a leaflet which could be posted to all the homes in Porthcawl and the whole school took part in a poster competition. On 29th March the Eco committee went to the Hi-Tide for a presentation and award ceremony. Our pupils told the audience; other local schools, town and county councillors and environment related agencies, about our litter picks and beach cleans and all the hard work we had been doing in school. The town Mayor presented certificates to the winners of the competitions. Rebekah won the poster competition and her design will be seen around Porthcawl soon. Felix received a special award for his colourful design on our acrostic poem which will be displayed in the local area. All the children represented the school proudly. Eco Team staff
NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL After weeks of planning and preparation the year 3 and 4 pupils amazingly performed their long awaited 1960’s fashion show. It was a fantastic conclusion to an extremely enjoyable term where the children immersed themselves in the culture of the 1960’s. From Martin Luther King timelines, to twisting to the chubby checkers and singing along to countless Beatles songs. From lighting to music, models and camera men every single child in the year groups played a fundamental role in the ideas and delivery of this rich learning experience. The pupils in Year 4, 5 and 6 have played several enjoyable rugby, football and netball fixtures this year. Congratulations to all the pupils that have represented our school. Many of our pupils also take part in a variety of sporting activities outside of school and in our Celebration Assembly the school recognises their achievements in all types of activities including kick boxing, judo and swimming. Congratulations to Bethan, year 6, who took part in the Swimathon, swimming 5km in 2 hours and 4 minutes. In doing so she raised over £600 for Cancer charities. Our Rising 3s are settling in well and enjoying their first experience of school life. We will be starting our invaluable ‘Language and Play’ sessions in May so if your little one is joining us in Nursery in September please come along. Children’s posters support litter campaign Nottage Primary School pupil Felix came up with a thought-provoking poem about litter.
Photo: Porthcawl Primary School pupil Lilia was the overall winner of Bridgend County Borough Council’s ‘Porthcawl... Love It, Don’t Trash It’ poster competition. Posters designed by schoolchildren will spearhead a campaign to reduce litter on Porthcawl’s streets and beaches this summer. Featuring colourful artwork and creative slogans encouraging residents and visitors to bin their waste, the posters will soon appear around the town as part of the ‘Porthcawl… Love It, Don’t Trash It’ campaign. A joint collaboration between Bridgend County Borough Council, Keep Wales Tidy and Porthcawl Town Council, together with Sea Quest, the initiative has captured the imagination of hundreds of children. Each of Porthcawl’s four primary schools, plus St Clare’s School, have all been taking part in the project. You’ll soon be seeing a lot more of Lilia’s design around the town as part of a campaign to encourage all residents and visitors to be responsible with their litter. The overall winning design – created by Porthcawl Primary School pupil Lilia – shows an octopus weighed down with several items of litter together with her slogan ‘Don’t let litter get out of hand’. Lilia’s design will have pride of place along the seafront as a reminder of the harmful effects of litter on the world’s sea life. Designs by other children will be displayed on streets around their schools. Over the past couple of months, pupils from the five schools have been learning about the negative impact of litter on their local environment by carrying out litter picks on nearby streets and beaches. The children then presented their findings at a special event held in the Hi-Tide. All of the children reported being particularly shocked at how much plastic they discovered and are interested to see what different types of littering trends they’ll discover when they carry out more litter picks during the tourist season. Councillor Richard Young, Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I am extremely impressed by the children’s passion and determination to clean up their town. The children have told us how much they hate to see rubbish, how sad it makes them to think of sea creatures being damaged by litter, and how no-one ever wants to step in dog poo. 26 | seaside news
Mary’s design showing a whale eating plastic was selected as the winning poster from Newton Primary.
“Over the past 18 months, 60 extra bins have been added to those we already have around the town, while 40 new ones have replaced older bins that had seen better days. There is certainly no excuse to drop litter or not pick up after your pet.” The initiative has also been endorsed by Porthcawl Town Mayor, Councillor Norah Clarke, who said: “I was amazed to discover quite how much plastic the children found during their litter picks. Interestingly, the children didn’t find many carrier bags, which is a sign of the impact being made by the introduction of a carrier bag charge, but they did find lots of single use plastics such as bottles and packaging. As a seaside town, we have a duty to look after not just our streets but our coastline too, so please be responsible with your rubbish.”
Photo: Representatives from Sea Quest together with Councillor Norah Clarke, the Porthcawl Town Mayor, and Councillor Mike Clarke. Anne Davidson, SeaQuest Manager, said: “We’ve been really proud of how all the local schools have got behind the ‘Porthcawl… Love It, Don’t Trash It’ project. The students worked really hard on the litter picks, and clearly put a lot of thought and effort into their posters. Their final presentations were outstanding and we hope that all the students involved carry on with their infectious enthusiasm to get the rest of their schoolfriends equally motivated to keep Porthcawl tidy!” Each of the schools taking part in the campaign will also receive a novelty bin for their school yard, while Porthcawl Primary School won their own litter picking set.

School reports ‘PORTHCALLING’ ALL RESIDENTS PICK UP YOUR LITTER
St Clare’s Y6 and Prep School Council pupils took part in the ‘Porthcawl - Love it, don’t trash it’ initiative. The community project for Porthcawl primary schools involved a beach and street litter-pick, with pupils analysing the types of litter collected. Their findings formed the basis of a marketing project, designing posters and flyers for Porthcawl Town Council to use this summer. The judging panel included the Mayor and each school’s winning flyer and poster were compared against their rivals. Niamh Marsh won the poster category for St Clare’s and Freddie Thomas designed the overall winning flyer which will now be reproduced as Porthcawl Town Council’s official flyer and posted through everyone’s doors this summer. Freddie’s clever slogan ‘Porthcalling all residents - Pick up your litter!’ will be read by thousands of locals and hopefully help to keep our locality clean and tidy. At a special event at the Hi-Tide, pupils gave a very professional PowerPoint overview of their project, their data and their conclusions. It has been a fun and very positive learning experience for everyone and will hopefully help Porthcawl visitors and residents to keep our streets and beautiful beaches clean and litter free! entered the Margam Abbey competition. The final featured five competitors, four of which were from our school: Samuel Finch, Lucy Rathkey, Karol Niklas and Juraj Revay with Samuel Finch winning overall. I have been really impressed by the efforts of our Year 12 Young Enterprise Group ‘Archways’: Emma Attwood, Sinead McKenna, Lauren Rogers, Tom Lewis, Isaac Watkins and Maisy Willows. They are doing a roaring trade in their revision cards scented with essential oils. The group have been working closely with business advisors from SSE who have praised their team working, business acumen and rapid improvement journey. I would like to express my gratitude to Kevin Stephens and Craig Summers who have been so generous with time and expertise. Students continue to thrive in their extra-curricular activities. Chloe Protheroe, Year 10, has been chosen to be part of the Swansea National Swimming Squad, Ioan Davies, Year 8, has represented British Schools at the Judo Championships in Sheffield and Leo Roberts has been chosen as one of a selected few to train with the Wales U13’s Football Team. CHANGES ARE IN THE OFFING FOR LOCAL CARERS
EMPLOYABILITY BRIDGEND IS JUST THE JOB
BCBC has taken away the funding it has given to the Bridgend Carers Centre for the past 20 years and instead decided to commission Carers Trust South East Wales to provide services. The council believes this move will provide more services for carers and not fewer and that there will still be a role for the Carers Centre at their base in Park Street, Bridgend. It is quite likely that there are thousands of people who have not asked for help and who are struggling on alone. The council says that providing services within the various communities will help reach them. But we have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Bridgend Carers Centre has a proven track record of providing support for carers not just at their base but also with outreach workers in schools, surgeries and the hospital. They are using their local knowledge. The council says that these services should continue with funding from other sources. We hope they are right.
Are you looking for work, keen on a better job, or would like to improve your skills by gaining new qualifications? If so, the council’s Employability Bridgend programme could be just the job for you. From advice on writing CVs and interview techniques, to help finding voluntary placements, or free vocational training, Employability Bridgend helps people who are either employed or unemployed. All of the support is completely tailored to each individual’s needs. Some people may be in a situation where they want to get a job but have many barriers that are standing in their way. The Employability Bridgend programme aims to remove as many of those barriers as possible, helping people to rebuild their confidence and self-esteem. The scheme can even provide support to cover work-related costs such as specific footwear or clothing that may be needed, or help with transport to work until your first payday. All of the assistance offered by Employability Bridgend is free and has been funded through Welsh Government and the European Social Fund. The team also run drop-in sessions where you can pop in for a chat about the support on offer. Please call 01656 815317, or email employability@bridgend. gov.uk to find out more.

OFCOM BROADBAND AND LANDLINE COMPENSATION This month we learned that broadband and landline customers will automatically receive money back from their providers when faced with issues. This compensation scheme, part of Ofcom’s Fairness for Customers Programme, will hopefully encourage providers to consistently supply customers with the service they pay for. The scheme could potentially result in firms having to pay out £142m to customers unless services are improved, around nine times the amount that customers currently receive. Customers will receive automatic compensation for delays, without having to ask for it. It also means that companies will strive to avoid these delays in the first place, ensuring customer satisfaction and fair treatment. Customers will receive £8 per day that the service is not repaired and £25 for missed appointments or cancellations within 24 hours. This new scheme has been agreed to by the UK’s largest broadband and landline providers such as BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and Zen, with more set to commit. Hyperoptic, Plusnet and Vodafone have committed to the new terms, with Hyperoptic and Vodafone to start paying out compensation later this year. In addition, small and medium-sized enterprises, who use residential broadband and landline services, will benefit from this scheme. You can find more information about the scheme at www.ofcom.org.uk MADELEINE MOON MP www.madeleinemoonmp.com 01656 750002

TACKLING LOCAL LITTER PROBLEMS Much to everyone’s frustration, there are certain parts of the county borough that have particular problems with littering and dog mess. These environmental crimes are some of the biggest issues that constituents regularly report to us. When we consulted on this matter last year, local residents were overwhelmingly supportive of the idea of being tougher on those who spoil it for others. So, to help us crack down on those people who are spoiling our local environment we’ve recently appointed 3GS as our education and enforcement partner to patrol problem spots across the county borough. I’m sure that all community-minded residents will welcome the 3GS officers when they start seeing them on their streets and public spaces this month. As they have the power to issue fixed penalty notices when necessary, their presence will act as a major deterrent. Education and prevention will always be our priority, but anyone who refuses to change their ways and continues to drop litter will soon find themselves picking up a fine. In Bridgend County Borough we spend around £1.5m on picking up litter each year. We would much prefer to be able to spend that money on essential frontline services instead. Local news PORTHCAWL LIFEBOAT WAS THE BUSIEST IN WALES
KAG GLASS SPLASHBACKS
The latest RNLI rescue figures for 2018 reveal the busiest station in Wales was Porthcawl with 112 launches, the volunteer crew also rescued more people than any other station across Wales 144 people in total. Eight lives were saved by Porthcawl lifeboats thanks to the crew coming to their aid. Although last summer’s weather was exceptionally good this was not the main reason for the large number of launches as statistics showed there was no particular peak of ‘shouts’ during that period. The crews were busy throughout the year responding to requests to launch all times of day and night and in a wide variety of weather and sea conditions. Lifeboat Operations Manager at Porthcawl, Phil Missen MBE, said: “Our volunteer crews answered the call to launch our lifeboats throughout the year and it was a huge commitment by them and their families. However, for us the main thing was that of the eight lives we saved the tragedy that befalls families and friends at the loss of one of their loved ones was avoided. We also assisted 144 people that were in danger before their situation became much more serious”.
OUT AND ABOUT IN PORTHCAWL AND PYLE It is always a great pleasure to speak to members of Porthcawl Shout Forum and my visit last month was no exception. In a hugely enjoyable and lively session, members asked me questions on the Swansea Tidal Lagoon, cycle paths, solar panels, Bus subsidies, flood defences, Flybe and on Brexit where the views of members mirrored the rest of the country with their growing frustration with the current situation. However, two main topics dominated our very lively discussions namely the regeneration of the town including the current proposals for the Salt Lake site and car parking issues. There was no shortage of ideas from the members of what proposals they would like to see for their town. What a transformation to Pyle Library. During a recent visit, I was able to see for myself how much the library had changed. It is open, light, modern and above all very welcoming. This much needed refurbishment has been possible thanks to funding from the Welsh Government and from Awen Cultural Trust. It is lovely to hear that so many community groups are using the library and I would encourage people to take a look. CARWYN JONES AM AM for Bridgend 34 | seaside news

STONELEIGH’S BEATING HEART So long you stood, neglected, No one to sing your praise Gone were the sparkling cabarets in those your glory days When youth would dance the whole night through Such memories for me and you But we who came as strangers only saw the ugly shell Ne’er thinking that in time ‘twould be transformed – a tale to tell No more to welcome Stars of fame, youth to dance the night away But to welcome those grown old and frail In the evening of their day Now within this stony building beats a heart that’s true and strong Who gives us ‘oldies’ courage, with laughter and with song Her door is always open and we’re given a comfy seat And she’s there to share our struggles so we need not fear defeat. Thank God for Stoneleigh’s beating heart, e’en though in stature not so strong, For with flaming hair and henchmen rare she’ll battle gainst the wrong And in our hearts we’re dancing, though our knees and hips won’t go And we’re thanking God for Caroline, with her Ying and Yang –(her doggies) you know. DISH OF THE DAY 1. Mary had a leg of lamb; The other one of pork, And all the dogs would follow her Each time she took a walk. 2. Her arms were pepperoni, Her feet were made of spam. And if you cut her she would bleed A stream of strawberry jam. 3. Spaghetti grew out from her head; Small carrots were her toes. Her hanky filled with chutney Every time she blew her nose. 4. But she was very happy And would say without conceit, “Everybody fancies me, I’m good enough to eat!” Bob Davies North Cornelly
WALES Welshmen have done so well At the boxing ring with the clang of the bell In other sport too, say one like cricket Though, many a player pipped at the wicket Soccer not so good, must be the shape of the ball But we’ll accept our failures, all in all The greatest of course is the Welsh rugby team Their achievements making all rugby fans beam Those boys go on playing in the rain and the muck Challenging their opponents in the ruck Enough said I have told you the tale We’ll keep ‘a welcome’ then in the hill and the Vale For my Wales is great it tops the score So with all that done I will say no more Just go slow take a look and you’ll see Everywhere in view is yours – all free! This land is so lovely, is ours to praise Let’s leave it at that life is good in Wales. As the strains of the national anthem lingers on It truly is then, the land of song. Eira Palmer Porthcawl

BRIDGEND ANIMAL RESCUE CENTRE (BARC) We are reaching out to homeless charities after learning about the death of a family pet in March. Cole was the beloved pet of a mother and son who sadly became homeless and used a night shelter on a bitterly cold night. Cole was not permitted inside, and shelter staff tied him to an outdoor kennel. Sadly Cole tried to release himself from the kennel overnight and accidentally hanged himself by his restraint. BARC are supporting the family and fundraising via a Go Fund Me campaign. They are also working with shelters to prevent a recurrence. Centre spokesperson Rebecca Christine-Lloyds explains: Pet bed for a night “Homeless people do not have to choose between their pet’s welfare and a bed for the night, we have a network of foster carers in and around Bridgend who provide overnight pet care. We will collect pets from Bridgend shelters, returning them to their homeless owners in the morning.” Free Pet Food Bank “BARC also offers a free pet food bank for homeless and lowincome families. Pet owners can ask shelters or their local food bank to refer them to us, and we will provide free food for their pets.” If anyone is concerned about a homeless pet, call BARC on 01656 744085 or find them on Facebook www.facebook.com/barcbridgend

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Tools for Africa Thank you for your recent support. Our picture this month shows a presentation from Frank Fulgoni on behalf of the Porthcawl Horticultural Society who throughout the year contribute new handles for hammers, pickaxes, shovels and spades which go into our building Kits. Last month we were able to send sewing machines, vices, water pumps and grinders to Tanzania through TFSR Cymru. We have also finished a shipment for Zambia comprising of Electricians, auto mechanics, building and Carpentry kits. We are always busy on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, which is the best time to visit the workshop and deliver tools. We do not want hardware as we are short of storage space. Tools may also be delivered to “Sussed” shop in James Street. Some surplus tools are sold to finance our project, but only those we do not wish to send to Africa. Other enquiries please telephone 786367. We have received news of our projects in Southern Zambia where our training partners have managed to equip small businesses with equipment giving security and a better future for their families. Your continued support in Porthcawl changes lives globally, that is some achievement so many thanks. John Hanson Group Coordinator
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Jim Carrey said, “I wish everyone had as much money as me because then people would realise that money doesn’t really satisfy, deep down.” People have always looked for true fulfilment and meaning in life. It’s like we all know that ultimate fulfilment is not found within ourselves. This will sound biased but I believe that a genuine sense of fulfilment is only found through a personal relationship with Jesus. I think we were created by God and so at our core we are spiritual beings. The bible tells us that when we are in relationship with God, He lives within us and we can then know a sense of completion, joy and peace that goes deeper than anything else. That’s my story anyway! When I really came to discover the reality of Jesus, I suddenly felt like I had come home. It was like life made sense on a whole different level. The love I also experienced was ‘out of this world’. It was a love on a whole new level. Friend! I would encourage you to get know Jesus. Look for a good local church or seek out my good friend Martin Gillard from Gilgal Baptist Church in Porthcawl. Help is available. Neil Harvey

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it? – Isaiah 43:20 My wife has foresight, but with a twist: she likes to prepare for events that have yet to happen. I’m reminded of this every time we go on a holiday: I pack for one person, while she packs for many. Buried in the suitcase among the socks and the toothpaste are the items I would never have thought to pack. Even before we’re out the door, she is preparing for the joyful unexpected long before they happen. Which, I’m convinced, is a big part of why they inevitably do happen. It’s precisely that kind of foresight to which Isaiah invites us: that spiritual readiness to see beyond the stranger to the friend, beyond the lump of clay to the chalice full of wine, beyond the conflict to the reconciliation. It is that kind of vision of which Wendell Berry spoke when he wrote, “That which is foreseen in joy must be lived out every day.” God Bless Rev Lewis Rees Minister to Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

CARWYN JONES VISITS PORTHCAWL SHOUT FORUM
NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL
Guest speaker, Carwyn Jones AM returned to a well attended Porthcawl Shout Forum and his format of talking to residents through 75 minutes of questions and answer allowed their concerns and views to be fully expressed. Discussed first was the proposed £1.5 Billion Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon which would have produced a variety of benefits including storm, flood and coastal protection. He was disappointed the Welsh Governments offer of a £200 million contribution was insufficient to agree an acceptable “Strike Price” for the electricity generated. It was no surprise Brexit soon followed and with his wife being Irish his personal concern was agreement on the border problem however he is firmly against a second referendum. Car Parking, Solar Panels, Cycling Paths, Cardiff Airport and our disappearing bus service were all discussed however BCBC’s proposed Regeneration Plan for a large housing estate on Salt Lake car park, another supermarket and a “budget” hotel had no support. To create a Premier Resort Carwyn’s suggested a luxury hotel with All-Weather leisure centre, a medium size conference centre and a Pyle & Porthcawl Parkway railway halt at Pyle. Everyone was very grateful he and his staff revisited Porthcawl Shout Forum and accommodated all opinions. Gary Victor
In March we logged and monitored 118 commercial vessels, 284 leisure and 18 others. 536 hours watchkeeping were undertaken. March was a very busy month for us with eight logged and fifteen monitored incidents. The logged incidents ranged from Mayday calls, to hazards, to navigation, from missing persons, to issues with commercial vessels. So far in 2019 we have been involved with 19 logged incidents, 63% up on 2018 figures. A large number of these have involved our CCTV cameras and the live Coastguard link. We are making a presentation at the RNLI station in May, followed by a visit to our tower, for all the new RNLI lifeguard recruits for Rest Bay, Sandy/ Trecco Bay and Ogmore beaches for the 2019 Season. We enjoyed an excellent Choral Evening at Porthcawl Grand Pavilion at the end of March. Thanks to Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir, soloist Charlotte Vaughan and the compere for the evening, Dean Powell. Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the event! Finally, some months ago, we were visited by TV Weatherman Derek Brockway, filming for his Weatherman Walking programme. This episode will be broadcast on Friday, 17th May at 7.30pm on BBC One Wales. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I am going through a divorce from my wife and we are hoping to agree a financial settlement in mediation? She inherited a significant lump sum following the death of her mother months before we separated. Am I entitled to a share? My wife is furious that I have raised this as an issue. Answer: – During mediation, the mediator will assist you both in compiling a list of your matrimonial assets both in joint names and in your respective sole names. This is to establish the matrimonial pot of assets. You will both be encouraged to provide full and frank disclosure of your financial positions. Your wife will be asked details of the lump sum inheritance received. It is relevant that it was received at the end of the relationship. Inheritance can be treated differently by the Courts when determining a financial settlement and can be labelled a “non matrimonial asset”. “Generally, when considering the issue of inheritance, the Court will consider whether your needs can be met from the existing matrimonial assets. If so, the Judge is likely to exclude the inheritance from the matrimonial pot. If your needs cannot be met from the existing assets, then a court is likely to include the inheritance in the pot of assets available for distribution.” This is always a difficult and sensitive issue as your wife is likely to see this as very much a contribution from her side of the family and it may be the case that you are to receive an inheritance in the future following the death of a family member. You may wish to consider how you would feel if she were making the same noises in respect of making a claim in respect of your inheritance if indeed the shoe was on the other foot! LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY’S AND DEPUTYSHIP ORDERS
We would always advise clients to seriously consider making Lasting Power of Attorney applications. (LPA’s). These are legal documents which provides for one or more people to make decisions on the client’s behalf. It comes into effect should the client become incapacitated and unable to manage their own affairs, at some point in the future. There are two types of LPA’s to include: 1. Property and financial affairs 2. Health and Welfare The appointed Attorneys can make a wide range of decisions legally on behalf of the client. Any LPA introduced should be professionally written, by a specialist, because it is a document which may need to cover many different situations and used in different ways under different circumstances. The client must have capacity to make the LPA’s and understand their implications. The LPA’s must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be used. If a person has not made LPA’s before they lose capacity, then the family, close friends or in some circumstances, social services, can apply for a Court of Protection Deputyship Order (COP) on behalf of that person. This gives the proposed deputy the ability to make decisions on behalf of someone who has lost the capacity to care for and make decisions for themselves. The deputyship order will set out the deputy’s powers. The powers are similar to those of LPA’s, and may relate for example, to the person’s finances, property or accommodation, their medical treatment and other healthcare issues, and their personal welfare and anything needed for their general care and well-being. The proposed deputy completes a set of application forms and a suitable practitioner (eg the patient’s doctor) completes a medical report. An application fee is payable. The proposed deputy can employ a professional adviser to help them with the application and advise on the duties as a deputy (once appointed). Our fee’s can normally be recovered from the funds of the person lacking capacity. A professional deputy can be appointed if there are no suitable other persons. Deputies can be reimbursed reasonable and legitimate expenses, such as telephone calls, travel and postage. If these exceed £500, they may have to explain why. A deputyship ends automatically if the person lacking capacity recovers or dies. Speak to us if you require any further information on either Lasting Power of Attorney or Court of Protection Orders. AN UPDATE ON CHANGES TO THE DIVORCE SYSTEM The Justice Secretary has announced a new law that will simplify the divorce process. Under the current law, divorce proceedings can be brought on the basis that the marriage has broken down irretrievably, but the Petitioner has to cite one of five facts in evidence. These are adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion and either two or five years’ separation, depending upon whether the Respondent consents to the proceedings or not. If the Respondent objects to the Petitioner petitioning for divorce using any of the fault based facts, it is possible to contest the proceedings and ultimately stop the divorce from happening. In practice, this is an inadvisable route to go down, as it increases costs considerably and does nothing to help the Parties move forward in resolving financial or children matters. The new changes will mean that once a party starts divorce proceedings, the other party cannot stop them as set out above and the marriage could be dissolved in as little as six months. These changes came about after a highly publicised case in which the High Court ruled that a woman was not allowed to divorce her husband on the basis of his behaviour, despite being trapped in an unhappy marriage. Although there will be concern that the changes will undermine the institution of marriage; in reality the present law does not prevent people from getting divorced, it only keeps them in relationships that they don’t want to be in. Animosity can increase at an early stage of the divorce process as one party has to blame the other for the marital breakdown and this frequently impacts upon a couple’s ability to co-parent their children in a positive way. The new law will hopefully simplify the system and reduce costs which can only be a positive thing. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Women’s institutions BRIDGEND SOROPTIMIST CLUB
At the Business Meeting held 10th April at the Heronston Hotel, Soroptimist International Bridgend were delighted to welcome Claire Williams and Ceri Hill who are Family Support workers from Barnardo’s. Claire and Ceri are based at the Susan Ellis Visitor Centre at HMP Parc and the Young Offenders Institute and Bridgend Soroptimists have forged strong links, through Barnardo’s, with the Visitor Centre. In addition to helping out at the recently opened snack bar, supplying welcome refreshments to families on their arrival for allocated visiting appointments, the club has now donated funding to enable the furnishing of the newly completed conservatory on site. The conservatory will provide ideal surroundings to offer organisations such as St John’s Ambulance Cymru, The Fire Service, South Wales Police and various Health Professionals to give talks and demonstrations to visiting families who will also be able to enjoy the very comfortable facilities. Claire and Ceri expressed their deep gratitude to the Soroptimists for the funding which helped make the project possible. An opening celebration is planned - just as soon as the window blinds (short delay in delivery) are installed. The fitting out will then be complete and available for use. More information on Soroptimist International activities can be found on http://sigbi.org/bridgend-and-district/ Eileen Bayley Publicity Officer
PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS We were very pleased to welcome Porthcawl National Coastguard Watch to our AGM to tell us about their work as they will be our charity for our Christmas Fayre. It was very interesting to hear how many volunteers are needed to man the Watch and not all coming from Porthcawl. We heard we are the second busiest station in the UK. At our AGM Freda Rodger was installed as our new chairman and Helen Taylor as vice-chairman. Also Judith Orphan was invited to be our President for the year. Judith has been in charge of the teacups for many years and richly deserved the honour. We warmly applauded reports from Dee Richardson, Jean Dorrington and Janet Anderson of the last years work. This months meeting is on May 8th 2.00p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Rev. Clive Williams will tell us about the music of Haydn. We are always assured of a lively afternoon with him so do come and join us. All welcome. Dorothy Thomas 44 | seaside news
PORTHCAWL IW I don’t believe it is 5 months through the year already. Last month was our yearly Conference, which was held at the motorpoint centre in Cardiff. The three-day conference consisted of I.W. business, inspirational guest speakers and entertainment. A celebration of service and friendship was led by Rev’d Kate Bottley. Her service was very uplifting, and subsequent session as a guest speaker had us all in uproars of laughter. Esther Rantzen was unable to attend due to sickness but her deputy spoke about the silver helpline, addressing the plight of the lonely elderly. The charities Period Poverty and Jessie’s fund were represented. Rukhiya Budden gave a very moving talk on the Charity Hope and Homes for children, eradicating orphanages a finding stable homes for disadvantaged children. Supporting school in a bag Ed Pratt a 19 year old set off to become the first unicyclist to ride around the world. He successfully raised £3000,000 for the charity. There were to many guest entertainers and speakers to comment on here It was a very successful conference. The next one will be held in Glasgow. I hope you all have a good summer. It’s the 9th of April and we are holding our monthly meeting at our usual venue the Talbot Centre 2pm till 4 pm. We are enjoying the fine weather perhaps spring is finally on its way. WI business over we welcomed a visitor to our meeting, which was filled with laughter at our members Easter bonnets. Outings for spring and early summer have been put to bed and transport arranged for our link meeting in the Hi Tide, which should be a great evening. Our speaker was Emlyn Williams and friends their topic was UFOs in Swansea. It was very interesting and it seems that there have been reports of UFOs since the time of the pharaohs in Egypt, it seems we are definitely not alone. Next month is our AGM so no speaker, the year is rushing by already and we’re hoping for a good summer so we can enjoy our days out. There are many and varied dates for our diary organised by the Glamorgan Federation for all of us, some energetic and some not so, so pop in and meet us and enjoy what the WI has to offer. On April 3rd our monthly gathering of W.I. members was held at the Newton Institute, as our usual venue was unavailable. The meeting commenced with details of forthcoming events, organised by GFWI plus our own planned trips. This months speaker was Rosemary Seaddon Msc., who gave a very interesting talk on (The History of Clothes from top to toe) , explaining how periods and events in history changed the style of clothes we wear today, especially Ladies Fashions. A most informative talk and very enjoyable. OUR evening’s contribution to fashion was a display of Easter Bonnets, all varied and imaginative. This year’s winner was Tina Hoskins. The walk this month took us around the Wilderness Area in Porthcawl. A lovely place full of amazing wild life and beautiful wild flowers. This was followed by a delicious lunch at the Broomwagon Café. The Social Link Meeting on April 10th. at the Hi Tide Inn was very well attended. As Host WI, we do hope that everyone enjoyed themselves, and we thank our President Jennifer for all her hard work. Hopefully we will be back at our usual venue (Gilgal Hall) next month. For more information ring Jennifer on 784715. M. Freeman

Our speaker for the evening was then introduced Rev Clive Williams who gave us the life story of Johann Sebastion Bach playing some of his compositions. What a lovely evening. Vote of thanks was given by Maureen Morgan. Raffle was won by Maureen James and the competition by Debbie Jones. Business & finance HOUSE SALES UP – BUT PRICES DOWN AS MARKET ADJUSTS At the time of writing Principality Building Society have just issued figures showing that house sales are increasing in Wales, however paid prices show An average decrease. House sales are up by 6% in Quarter 1 of 2019 compared to the same time in 2018, with Principality Building Society suggesting first-time buyers are making the most of the opportunity of relatively affordable house prices in parts of Wales. However, the average house price in Wales has fallen to £185,018, with the annual growth of 0.4% the lowest since August 2013. The figures have been released from Principality Building Society’s Wales House Price Index for Q1 2019 (January – March), which shows the rise and fall of house prices in each of the 22 local authorities in Wales. House prices across the country have fallen by an average of 0.8% in Quarter 1 of 2019. According to Principality’s House Price Index for Wales, the decline in quarterly prices has been caused by uncertainty surrounding Brexit, with many buyers and sellers waiting for a clear decision on the future of the country’s position in Europe before committing to the purchase or sale of a property. Annual house price growth is low compared to the same period last year due to the sales of more expensive properties ahead of the introduction of the Land Transaction Tax in April 2018, which resulted in a rise in stamp duty for mid to high end priced homes.
Overall, there were 15 local authority areas in Wales where prices fell in the quarter, with just seven local authorities seeing a rise in house prices, however, including the more affordable regions of Neath Port Talbot (1.9%), Blaenau Gwent (1.1%) and Merthyr Tydfil (0.5%), which Principality suggests has been helped by first-time buyers remaining keen to get on the property ladder in those areas. Tom Denman, Chief Financial Officer at Principality Building Society said: “The south-east of Wales continues to see house price growth as a result of the abolition of the Severn Bridge tolls and the widening commuter belt between Bristol and Cardiff.’’ Despite political uncertainty however, mortgage funding is still in good demand and here at Dragon Financial we have seen a marked number of enquiries, as those in the market still wish to secure mortgage funds and going into the summer period, so important for house sales, a trend we anticipate to continue steadily if not spectacularly. Whatever your mortgage needs and whatever age you’re at (especially those in later life) please call us on 01656 782545. PAUL FIELDING Dragon Financial 01656 782545 / 07768 418308

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

LIFETIME MORTGAGES More people are choosing Lifetime Mortgages to cash in their bricks & mortar and not move home! As there is no evidence of income required it’s no surprise there has been a significant rise in the number of people over 55 using lifetime mortgages to release equity from their homes. Take for example clients of ours who wanted £30,000 for a new kitchen & bathroom but could not afford the repayments of £600 per month on a loan, they were able to release the funds from their house at a cost of £100 per month and then chose to have the payment added to the loan. Effectively the work was carried out without it having to eat into their retirement income. So what are the hard facts? Well gone are the days where you have to worry about the mortgage growing larger than the value of your home. Lenders now have to provide protection in the form of No Negative Equity Guarantees, which basically means the mortgage cannot increase beyond the value of your property and leave you homeless. Another major improvement is, you can draw funds in stages at different times for several needs so this flexibility means your funds last longer by not taking the maximum at outset. What also surprises a lot of our clients is the fact that interest rates offered by lifetime mortgage providers are surprisingly competitive and as good as mainstream lending. You also now have the option to lock in a certain percentage of your property value using the Guaranteed Inheritance option so if you wanted to protect some of you house value for your children you can!
There are lots of different providers each with varying incentives so we can compare all of these for you to ensure you get the best deal out there. Just remember this form of capital raising isn’t for everyone, which is why you might like to see more case studies to see if this could work for you. To discuss your options please call Abacus Assurance on 01656 772222. Abacus Assurance FS Ltd is Authorised and Regulated by the financial Conduct Authority. A lifetime mortgage is secured against your home.

If you are reading this article after the 4th May what a shame you’ve missed a really grand plant sale! If you are reading this before the 4th then come along to Cliff Cottage, Laleston as there is a huge range of plants for sale from 10am and many bargains to be had. The next big event in our Club schedule is the Annual Show, which will be held on the first Saturday in September. As we have numerous new members we are hoping that the competition is going to be challenging and are looking forward to an exciting show! In the meantime we have a few more Monday evening lectures before the summer recess begins and then there are the summer club trips to enjoy. This is the time of year to think about hardening off all those tender annuals you have either been bringing on from seed or have recently bought. It takes time to do this properly otherwise you risk losing the plants to a late frost. Having a cold frame
May is the month that kicks up a gear! Hope you had a nice rest over Easter (you’re going to need it!) The time for mowing, sowing, hoeing and slug hunting is here again. If you are removing duckweed and blanketweed from your pond lay the removed weed beside the pond overnight to allow the insects, snails and other pond life to escape back into the water (bless ‘em). Pinch out the growing point of broad beans as soon as beans appear at the base of the plant to reduce the risk of blackfly (it’s their favourite bit to munch on!) Thin out lavender and choisya, if you cut off dead flower heads they will reward you with a second bloom in autumn – something to look forward to. We are having a plant sale in the front garden of 5 Bryn Terrace on May 11th 10-12am come along and grab a bargain - plants and a chat what could be better! Did you know May 3rd is “Garden Meditation Dayâ€?, the 25th is “National Wine Dayâ€? and the 11th is “Eat What You Want Dayâ€? –sounds like a cracking day if you combine them all together! Health & wellbeing KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE DAY AT PORTHCAWL The mere mention of Brexit is enough to raise anyone’s blood pressure, so it was fortunate that Porthcawl Rotarians organised Know Your Blood Pressure Day at Trinity Church recently. The Stroke Association promote this annual event and it is supported nationally by Rotary Clubs and people all over the country are given the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked by health professionals without having to make an appointment at a surgery. Of the 80 individuals who attended 15 were advised to make a routine follow up appointment with their GP and 13 were advised to make an urgent appointment. High blood pressure is a key risk factor in stroke, which can occur at any age; it is the third most common cause of death in the UK and the single most common cause of severe disability. Often there may be no symptoms of high blood pressure so Porthcawl Rotarians support this event in the hope that it could help prevent disability and save lives from stroke. Photo: Rtn. DEPRESSION Depression is one of the most widely diagnosed conditions of our time, with over 3 million cases in the U.S. every year, and 350 million believed affected worldwide. Conventional medicine considers antidepressant drugs first-line treatments, including the newly approved injected postpartum drug costing $34,000 a treatment, to the tune of a 16 billion dollars in global sales by 2023. Despite their widespread use, these drugs are fraught with a battery of serious side effects, including suicidal tendencies, the last thing you would hope to see in a condition that already has suicidality as a co-morbidity. For this reason alone, natural, safe, and effective alternatives are needed more than ever before. While research into natural alternatives for depression is growing daily -- GreenMedInfo.com’s database contains 647 studies on over 100 natural substances that have been studied to prevent or treat depression -- it is rare to find quality human clinical research on the topic published in well-respected journals. That’s why a powerful study published in PLOS One titled, “Role of Magnesium supplementation in the treatment of depression: ”A randomised clinical trial.” is so promising and magnesium is safe, affordable, and easily accessible, but according to this recent study, effective in treating mild-to moderate symptoms of depression. MEDITATION IN DAILY LIFE Lots of interesting research being conducted on the process of the daily human body clock. Peaks and troughs of concentration at particular parts of the day. Research tells us concentration is strongest mid morning and early evening. The mind and emotional states associated with ‘concentration’ are what are known as the ‘hindrances’ in the practice of Dhamma. These descriptions include drowsiness, restlessness, doubt, anger and sexual desire. When the mind is flooded with these states and when coupled with the time of day. Certain decisions can be difficult. Pacing can be helpful. Disengage from the doing part of your task. Pause. Let the mind rush forward. Once you have paused, turn your attention to four questions. What hindrance is operating now? What time of day is it? What is the task that I am completing? Can this objective task function with a mind that is flooded with this hindrance? An example. The hindrance of ‘Restlessness’ arose lunch time. I have eaten a big meal, that flurry of thought has tricked me into thinking I was really hungry. Its 3pm, the body clock time of poor concentration. Now my task is to drive for one hour to Monmouth. The hindrance of ‘drowsiness’ is flooding my mind and the body is slow and lethargic. There is a fogginess that cannot be addressed. The consequence of driving a car whilst feeling like this may have many outcomes. My safety and that of others is compromised. My decisions in this whole episode involves the hindrances of mind. With wisdom we can help ourselves plan for the predictable hindrance and orientate our minds to move towards improving concentration and therefore our patterns of decision making. That’s it - The Dhamma in action. Neville Evans

COST OF CANCER
I trust you all had a really lovely Easter? I think the weather helped to make it and wasn’t it just glorious? In April we had our Melodies in Margam Event at Margam Abbey. This was our first choral event which had Kenfig Hill and District Male Voice Choir, Crescendo and Da Capo Choirs. It was a wonderful evening and everyone who came thoroughly enjoyed it. We raised over £1300 and are hoping to put the event on in the future. Thank you to Margam Abbey the volunteers and all the choirs involved for helping make it such a huge success. Here’s a few pictures of the event. Follow us on Facebook to keep upto date with our events. Take care Nicky, Emma & Cath Cost of Cancer

Arts & music KENFIG HILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR
The photo is taken from our recent fundraising concert at the magnificent setting of Margam Abbey for the Cost of Cancer charity which was well received by all and a great success raising £ for this wonderful, local charity whom we are proud to be associated with. It has been a busy couple of months with the earlier concert for Porthcawl Coastwatch raising a massive £4700 enabling them to install a further 3 cameras along our local coastline. May and June bring us 3 more concerts: one for our Patrons; our much-anticipated tour away to sing at Selby Abbey and a joint concert with the Dublin Male Voice Choir. We then sing at a wedding and cap it all off with our highlight of the year, the Annual Gala Concert at The Grand Pavilion on 20th July. The remaining tickets have just gone on sale from the box office at The Pavilion and can be bought online on their website. Should anyone want information about the main choir, this can be found at www.facebook.com/KHMVC/ on our website at www.kenfigwelshmalechoir.org.uk or contact the secretary Tony Ulberini at tonyulberini@gmail.com - Tel: 07866 742452. the evening went with a bang and raised a good sum for the choir funds. Thanks to the sterling efforts of our Treasurer Marilyn Hill our Ladies Section has recently been revitalised, and are already organising trips and events. There is always a warm welcome for anyone interested in being part of a choir at Arlington Road Church at 7.30 on a Tuesday and Friday. PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
The Choir has been doing the rounds of schools in Porthcawl singing at Welsh weeks for West Park and Porthcawl Primary Schools and at the Grand Pavilion for Porthcawl Comprehensive School Eisteddfod. T he Choir was enthusiastically received by each school and its refreshing for the Choir to interact with the children. The Choir and supporters will be travelling in 2 coaches to Newquay for a long weekend in Cornwall at the end of April, singing at a concert with Polperro Male Voice Choir in aid of the RNLI. A Race Night recently held at Porthcawl Rugby Club attracted a good crowd thanks to baritone Ray Hootons and the clubs staff 52 | seaside news
My column this month is making a request for information, because I have lately been doing research into a certain aviation subject and I would very much welcome the chance to hear from any older readers of Seaside News who worked as pilots, flight engineers or wireless operators on commercial airliners in the post-war years of the late 1940s and early 1950s, whether for Wales’s own Cambrian Airways or the national airlines of BOAC and BEA. Likewise, I would be interested to hear from ground controllers from that same period to find out about procedures for communicating with aircraft. For the purpose of making a comparison, I would equally like to talk to present-day commercial pilots and air traffic controllers, so if you or anyone you know come into any of the above categories and are happy to share your experiences, whether from the post-war era or today, please get in touch with me and I will tell you what it is all about. Everyone else will have to be patient and see what film develops from it in the coming year! Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
Over the last few years I have had calls regarding the Planet Rockstock Festival that takes place every December at Trecco Bay, Porthcawl. They range from “I haven’t seen it advertised” to “Where can I get tickets?” Well, the event is done in-house by Planet Rock radio station, so contact their website quickly as it’s always a sell-out. It takes place this year on December 6th – 8th, with rock giants Uriah Heep topping the bill (Sunday night) along with The Choirboys, Dan Reed Network, Last in Line, Kris Barras and more. The Heep have sold over 40 million albums and are currently on a sell-out USA tour with Judas Priest. I’ve met the guys a few times (see photo) and they have been a huge influence on my musical career. I’ve had tons of feedback from last month’s column about Last Flight to Pluto’s new album but forgot to put where to buy it, so you can order it from whiteknightrecords.co.uk. Finally, don’t miss the late Steve Strange charity fundraiser night at the General Picton on Saturday May 25th at 7.00pm. I knew Steve well and he recorded one of our songs, which sounds brilliant but is as yet unreleased – hopefully it will be later in the year. WEATHERMAN WALKING COMES TO PORTHCAWL
WALK YOUR SOCKS OFF FOR GUIDE DOGS
Wales’ favourite weatherman, Derek Brockway, is coming to Porthcawl as his hit series Weatherman Walking returns to screens to celebrate the country’s stunning coastline. The new eight-part series – Weatherman Walking: The Welsh Coast - will include an 11-mile walk from Porthcawl to Southerndown which will air on BBC One Wales at 7.30pm on the 17th May . Along the way Derek will meet members of the lifeboat crew, local anglers and guide dog puppies, as well as seeing some of the landscape from horseback. The route will see him take in local spots including Trecco Bay, Merthyr Mawr, Ogmore and Dunraven Beach. Derek said; “The Welsh coastline is spectacular, stretching for nearly 900 miles and there’s a coastal path the entire length of it. Around each bay and each bend is a sight to behold. I’ve walked the length and breadth of this country but there are still corners of the Welsh coast I’ve never seen. “In this series I’ll be meeting some incredible people, exploring some of nature’s phenomena and taking on new challenges. “The Welsh coast is an area of contrast; wild and rugged bays, popular beaches and breath-taking views and I can’t wait to explore it.” Jordan Harris BBC Cymru Wales Thursday 6th June

Love walking? This month, Guide Dogs is challenging supporters aged 16-plus to walk 100,000 steps in a week and raise money to support people living with sight loss. In return, they are offering to replace your worn-out socks with an exclusive pair from Guide Dogs. Walk Your Socks Off is a great challenge that you can do in your own time, wherever you like. Choose any week in May to take part, and spread your steps over your chosen week however you please – at home, at work, walking the dogs or out and about with friends and family. You can also share your step count with others, or donate to Guide Dogs via your JustGiving page to “buy” additional weekend days to complete the challenge. As long as you raise at least £50 for Guide Dogs by 7 June, you will be rewarded for your amazing efforts with an exclusive pair of Guide Dogs socks. You can complete your 100,000-step challenge however you choose – try running, circuits, aerobics, going for a hike or a family day out or dancing to boost your step count. PORTHCAWL SQUASH CLUB
RUNNERS CELEBRATE MEMORABLE YEAR
The Spring 2019 season is providing a mixed bag of fortunes for our club. Porthcawl A, having been promoted to the South Wales Premier 2 Division, are discovering life a little tough compared to last season’s clean sweep of fixtures. However, we’re proving our strength and resilience in holding the table up! Our B and C teams are competing in all matches and are both sitting mid table in Mid Glamorgan 1 and 2. It shouldn’t be ignored that as a club we’ve missed a few regular team members through injury throughout this season. We’d very much like to see them back soon! I’m very pleased to report our juniors Josh and Lewys Audsley have both been selected to represent Wales in the European Team Championships in Eindhoven in May - Under 17 and 15 respectively. Big congratulations to them both. Lewys also played for Wales in the 5 Nations Under 15 tournament held in Dublin 5-7th April. Lewys played exceptionally well against England, Ireland, Scotland and France, winning some matches - and taking a game off the England player ranked number 8 in the world. Lewys enjoyed the whole experience of the 5 Nations very much and is eagerly awaiting for his next encounter in May in Eindhoven. We’ve also recently celebrated new team sponsorship, a huge thanks to Porthcawl Dental Care [Hywel Price] and LasersAreUs [Simon Lau]. They’ve both helped our teams with match kits. Our new team shirts are on display in the photo, modelled if not elegantly, then efficiently by our A team. If any budding squash players out there are thinking they should start and join our club, then please act now and contact our Club Secretary Peter Wells on 07932 173993. Kevin Cullinan
Porthcawl Runners celebrated another memorable year at their AGM and awards night which was held at the Fairways Hotel. The various award winners were as follows: Top male: Dave Bennett; Top female: Deb Roberts; Most improved male: Nick Lewis; Most improved female: Gemma Haworth; Parkrun male champion: Mark James; Parkrun female champion: Skye Ford; Chairman’s award: Gareth Roper; Clubman of the year: Steve Picton; Clubwoman of the year: Lucy Jones; Runners’ runner of the year: Lucy Jones, Janet Davies and Kerry-Dare Edwards. There was also special recognition given to those runners who completed all six Bridgend County Running League races in 2018. Those were: Janet Davies, Skye Ford, Steve Picton, Juliet Picton, Barry James, Karen Phillips and Michele Watkins. That was also the case for members who ran in all five West Glamorgan Cross Country League races during the 2018/19 season. Those were: Deb Roberts, Dave Bennett, Geraint Lewis, Wilfy Edwards and Rob Slaughter. The formal business of the evening saw chairman Gareth Mole, secretary Toni Cosson and treasurer Alwyn Thomas all reelected in their respective roles. The club, which continues to go from strength to strength, also reported a record membership of 153 by the end of March.
