Your views BRIAN’S BIRTHDAY BASH FOR TENOVUS
Dear Editor, Brian Raybould of Beach Road, Porthcawl celebrated his 70th birthday party on 31st January by raising funds for Tenovus Cancer Care. The evening of song and dance, held at the Awel-y-Mor Community Centre in Porthcawl, was a great success with the guests entertained by the inspirational Tenovus Bridgend Sing for Life Choir and Brian playing bass guitar with the Arlington Road Acoustic Band. A raffle and refreshments were organised by Michelle Evans of Lloyds Bank plc Pontypridd, which together with matchfunding raised £1,076. Pictured above L-R Katie Evans, Michelle and Manager Emma Derrick. The money was greatly appreciated as Tenovus, along with other charities, have had their income substantially reduced due to the COVID lockdown. Their Choirs, charity shops and other sources of revenue have been badly hit. However, they are still providing vital services to the public. It may be an anxious time for many who have had non-essential cancer treatment and investigations postponed. Tenovus Support Lines are manned by nurses and benefits advisers who are available 365 days a year to answer any questions on cancer from patients, family and the public. Tenovus Cancer Care Helpline: 08088 081010 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, weekends and bank holidays 10am-1pm). https://www.tenovuscancercare.org.uk/how-we-can-helpyou/talk-to-us/

RE: BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE ARTICLE (APRIL 2020 ISSUE) Dear Editor, I read the article from Bridgend For Europe and was heartened to find people haven’t forgotten that the result of the General election still has to come to fruition. We hope we are in the gravest of time with the Covid-19 pandemic and that things will improve soon, yet gov’t continues to spend it’s time pushing us out of the EU, deal or no deal, refusing to postpone the transition period, even though we face an economic crisis like no other. The experts say Brexit will give us an economic shock that hopefully will recover quickly. Now Covid-19 has turned everything on it’s head, the effect on the economy may result in a downturn significantly lower than that experienced during the great depression, the IMF projects that it may be -6.1% or even worse. It is time to stop and think about what we are doing. We have a gov’t that is so keen to be rid of the EU they have not taken part in EU meetings to discuss the way forward, join the EU ventilator scheme, or adequately prepare, even when Italy begged us to ‘test, test, test’, we are still not testing or tracing people. H Davies, Porthcawl
THANK YOU DEE AND STAFF Dear Editor, A big thank you to Dee Patel and his hard-working staff at Parc Stores, Cil Parc, Porthcawl. The shelves are always well stocked in addition to dairy produce, newspapers, hand sanitizers, your favourite tipple and not forgetting postage stamps. All the staff stay happy and positive during this dreadful time and welcome customers with a cheerful greeting each morning. How lucky we are to have Parc stores on our doorstep. Dil Lewis, Porthcawl

Health & wellbeing COVID 19 PANDEMIC I do not know what the situation will be like by the time you read this but it is very important that now more than ever you stay fit and healthy. Regular exercise and healthy eating as always are the things to do but looking ahead when this pandemic is over will things be different? Perhaps we will value our friends and neighbours more and certainly appreciate what the NHS does for us and maybe we should look at using local businesses and suppliers more rather than looking further afield. What about buying British? Surely in this country we can manufacture most of the things we need and the British government should now be encouraging this and not rely on far flung countries to supply us with our consumables. If British companies can turn their hands to making equipment we need in a crises then that’s how it should be in normal times. Stay safe and healthy. Glyn Hardwicke
Deadline date for the Online Version in June is: Sunday 25th May
MEDITATION Honesty illuminates and couples beautifully with fading ignorance. Honesty is a mirror that recognises clearly that an action that a person performs in one life will always have an effect. The effect may be satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The result depends on the temperament of the individual. Such a decision will be felt in that heart, pain, annoyance, and anger. Honesty and ignorance can’t see one another when ‘I’ stands in the way. You might recognise the ‘I want to leave, I want to be someone, I want to do this, I want to travel, when this is over ‘I’ will. It this longing for ‘I’ that stops the contemplation and the seeing of the causes of our dissatisfaction. When this happens, you stop blaming governments and institutions - but realise that your own actions have brought you to now. What is now? ‘Now’, is the ceasing of all this wanting, all these made up projections in our head. Dreams and aspirations hey? The identity of ‘me’ softens. This at that very moment can be very liberating. Choices can be made in all aspects of your life. Choices and decisions that can be blameless for everyone. Having looked at Facebook and some of the experiences that people are posting, there is indeed some wonderful examples of people just relaxing and resting. Nothing to do, nobody to be. Just this. Congratulate yourself regularly... Neville Evans

A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS OF TY ELIS The present situation with corona virus has touched everyone, maybe in different ways. We must all stick to the Government Health guidelines to Stay at home, Protect the NHS, and Save Lives. However, we must be mindful of individuals who are selfisolating, and the impact on their mental health and well being. We offer the following advice: Stick to daily routines, it is important to get up as normal and follow existing routines as far as possible. It may be a good time to adapt routines. Write a “To do “ list to give your day some structure. Consider catching up on jobs you have put off, even minor things, such as reorganizing clothes cupboards. Connect with people, by phone, text, video calls and email. If you do not have access to technology, a simple phone call will brighten your day. Consider scrolling through your phone book and catching up with long-lost friends. Also, connect with people who may be in a similar position to yourself. This will have the double benefit of sharing the “feel good factor”. Keep your mind stimulated: read books, watch films, complete crosswords and sudoku puzzles. Use social media wisely. Not all items are true. Concentrate on well-known sources. Look out for others: a phone call or contact to a friend or neighbour can make a huge difference. Again, we must adhere to the advice of the Government Professionals and, above all, Stay Safe. You can find details of the work and support given to the community by Ty Elis our website, https://www.tyelis.org.uk/ and contact us at 01656 786486 or office@tyelis.org.uk

Local history SUMMER ENTERTAINMENT AT COSY CORNER
The ‘Blackbirds’ were one of several entertainment troupes that travelled around South Wales, in the years prior to WW1. They performed during in the summer months in open air venues. Porthcawl was a popular venue; as was Weston-SuperMare. The photograph above shows them on the specially built stage at Cosy Corner in July/August 1910. In1906 whilst at Porthcawl, the Blackbirds, who at that time performed in a specially erected tent found themselves victims of a storm. The Glamorgan Gazette reported: “Considerable damage was done to property in the neighbourhood of Porthcawl, windows being blown in and signposts hurled to the ground. The tent of the ‘Blackbirds’ troupe of entertainers, situated near the esplanade, was found to be in shreds.” The troupe was one of a few managed by the Welsh comedian and impresario, Ted Hopkins. Edward Lewis Hopkins ’Ted’ was born in Melincryddan, Neath in 1875. Following a successful amateur career, along with his sister May, he was soon working professionally throughout the Welsh Valleys. It was the start of a successful 20 year in Music Hall. In addition to his comedy act, Ted was also a prolific theatrical manger, producing summer concert parties and pantomimes. Ceri Joseph

WOMEN OF COURAGE, HEROINES OF SOE Sonya Esmée Florence Butt, also known as Sonya d’Artois, was the youngest female SOE agent to serve in France. Born on 14 May 1924, Sonya worked as a courier for the Headmaster network under the code name Blanche. Sonya joined the SOE, aged 19, on 11 December 1943 when she met fellow agent and future husband Guy d’Artois. On 28 May 1944, nine days before D-Day, the SOE parachuted her into Le Mans. The Nazis shot a fellow agent who landed with Sonya, so she took on his role of weapons instructor. Pursued by the Gestapo, Sonya carried money, delivered messages and maintained contact with fellow SOE agents and the French Resistance. The SOE preferred female agents as couriers because when they travelled around the district on bicycles they were less likely to attract attention compared to males of military or working age. Her missions successful, Sonya returned to Britain in October 1944 when she married Guy. The couple lived in Canada where they raised six children, three boys and three girls. WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Lise de Baissac was the first embedded agent to arrive in France when she parachuted from a Whitley bomber on 24 September 1942. Posing as an amateur archeologist, she cycled around the countryside to reconnoitre possible parachute drop-zones and landing areas for the RAF. A leader of sabotage missions, she set tyre bursters and mines on military roads, cut telephone wires, underground cables and railway lines. Furthermore, she took part in attacks on enemy columns. Lise’s colleagues spoke very highly of her. Captain Blackman, the leader of an SAS party in France wrote: “Every day she would cycle sixty or seventy kilometres. She often carried much compromising material on her person and bicycle, such as wireless material and secret documents. If she had been discovered carrying such things she would have been undoubtedly shot on the spot without trial or formal enquiry. Consequently she risked her life daily.” Lise died on 29 March 2004, aged 98. In 2008, her life was recaptured in the highly fictionalised French film Female Agents (Les Femmes de l’ombre). School reports ST CLARE’S SCHOOL NEWS
Summer Kansiray, Year 8, has chronic kidney disease and attends dialysis 3 times a week so misses a lot of school. Until now, her teachers kept work for her or added it to Firefly, our usual virtual learning platform. Although our doors are closed to all but keyworkers’ children, we’re still ‘virtually open’. When schools closed, we moved everyone from Nursery to Sixth Form onto our remote and online learning programme. We’re part of a worldwide group so UK schools learned quickly from colleagues in Asia and Spain. It’s been a huge undertaking to make the move to online learning – our teachers and pupils have thrown themselves into the process with amazing energy. Summer’s experience shows the power of keeping children connected. It’s so inspiring to all of us to know this new way of learning is making such a positive difference to our pupils. Summer loves the live interaction with her classmates on Microsoft Teams, the daily contact with teachers and pastoral support offered. Mum, Joanne, said, “It’s been so lovely for Summer to have something good to focus on. She even looks forward to dialysis now! They are such a fantastic team at St Clare’s. We’re so lucky!” Helen Hier Head Teacher Picture: Summer on kidney dialysis enjoys her online Spanish lesson with Mrs Smart

BRYNTEG SCHOOL NEWS
We at Brynteg School are so proud of our staff who in these uncertain times have stood up to the mark and shone brilliantly! Staff members from the Design and Technology department organised a fundraising campaign to raise money to purchase materials in order to make PPE equipment using our 3D printers. The department made and delivered face shields to health workers in our community, including pharmacies, care homes, community midwives, dentists and the Princess of Wales hospital. As well as Mr Webber, Mr Buller, Mr Catton and Mr Coupland from the Design and Technology department, Mrs Nicholas, Ms Newman, Mr Lewis, Mr Brown and former pupil Dafydd Burnford also helped to assemble the parts and deliver the masks to where they were needed. “We cannot thank Brynteg Comprehensive School enough for the supply of Face Shields we have received at Ty Bryn Care Home. The fact that this will make us even safer in the job that we do is wonderful! Thank you, Mr Webber and all of the teachers that have made them and to Mr Lewis for delivering them. Our daughter, is lucky to attend such a brilliantly supportive school. Thank you #staysafe - Mrs L Durlucia”. Jen Davies

Local news BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE
Where now for Remain? After Storm Ciara and before the Covid Lockdown, delegates from B4E attended two national conferences, developing national strategy for future action. The first was held at Westminster Central Hall, London, under the auspices of “Grassroots for Europe”, encompassing the European Movement, Best for Britain, Wales for Europe and various “For Europe” groups from all across the UK. An extensive list of well-known speakers included Dominic Grieve, former Conservative MP (see photograph); Will Hutton, Economist; Prof. Juliet Lodge, Women for Europe; Polly Toynbee, Columnist, The Guardian; Prof. A.C. Grayling, Philosopher; and Dr. Mike Goldsworthy, Scientists for Europe. The second meeting, a day of workshops at the Tramshed, Cardiff was organised by Wales for Europe, and was concerned with the future shape of this organisation. The main message was: the UK has left the EU, but the fight continues, both at the all-Wales level, and through the work of local groups. Over the two conferences easily the loudest and longest ovation (a standing one) was for Dominic Grieve, who’s simple and powerful message was this: in due course “Re-join the EU” will become the most popular social movement in the United Kingdom. CAMPAIGN WELCOMES DECISION TO PAUSE DOWNGRADING OF ROYAL GLAMORGAN A&E Campaigners against the proposed downgrading of the Royal Glamorgan Hospital A&E have welcomed the decision by Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board to temporarily pause most activities to do with downgrading the A&E department. The board said its move is to allow its full attention on the Covid-19 pandemic. Len Arthur, Chair of the Campaign to Save Royal Glamorgan Hospital A&E (SRGAE), says the Board should now drop its plans completely. “We urge the board to leave their plans on the backburner, or better still, to drop them completely. The Coronavirus pandemic, which is ravaging communities worldwide, is demonstrating with devastating effect that people need full and unfettered access to healthcare – including emergency departments – in their localities close to home.” He adds that if further evidence were needed that A&E 20 | seaside news
departments were a necessary function in the NHS, Covid-19 is it. The pandemic is yet to peak in the UK and we need every A&E department to be operational. “We will consider how to monitor the Board meeting on 26 March. However our campaign continues to aim to ensure a permanent 24-hour consultant led emergency department at RGH and the current crisis confirms the importance and urgency of our campaign,” he adds. The Campaign notes comments made today by the Health Board that it is “grateful to all those who have participated in the Health Board’s recent engagement events and we look forward to resuming our conversation with the public, our staff and elected representatives about options for future service delivery at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital once Covid-19 is under control.” We would of course welcome further dialogue and look forward to this. But we urge the board to think very carefully about downgrading plans in light of the pandemic and to redouble its efforts to recruit the necessary consultants.
Deadline date for the Online Version in June is: Sunday 25th May A MESSAGE FROM YOUR MP WHEN I was elected MP for Bridgend just a few months ago, nobody could have imagined what was coming down the track to all of us. But here we are and we have to cope with the many worries that the Coronavirus has thrown up. My staff and I have been helping local businesses access the various loans and grants available because this is the only way to ensure that we end up with viable businesses able to provide jobs. We have also dealt with those who need to claim benefits, those who are self-employed and unsure what to do and others who need help with things like food deliveries. But what has come over very clearly to me is the way in which people are caring for others. Volunteers have come forward throughout the area to help the community in many different ways and I salute them for their willingness to put others first. I have been liaising with health chiefs, leaders at BCBC and senior police on many matters and will continue to raise your concerns with them. I urge anyone with any issues at all to get in touch. HELP FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES The Covid-19 corona virus outbreak is proving to be a huge challenge for local businesses. As I write these words, Bridgend County Borough Council has already processed 1,369 applications for funding support, and has provided more than £17.6m - with more to follow. The money is being made available as part of Welsh Government’s Covid-19 business support package. This is designed to help businesses eligible for small business rates relief in Wales and who occupy premises with a rateable value of £12,000 or less. It also includes those who fall under small business rates relief, but who do not currently pay business rates, and retail, leisure or hospitality businesses with a rateable value of £12,001 to £51,000. Applications can be made by completing the online form at the council website. To avoid delays, it is vital for applicants to provide accurate information, including copies of bank statements showing bank details. Welsh Government has also launched a £500m Economic Resilience Fund to support eligible firms, businesses, charities and social enterprises. You can find out more and if you are eligible by visiting https://fundchecker.businesswales.gov.wales/ I hope that all businesses and organisations will make use of this support as we seek to stay safe and well. COUNCILLOR HYWEL WILLIAMS Deputy Leader Bridgend County Borough Council Tel: 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
THANKS TO THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THE CORONA VIRUS CRISIS AM’s and their staff are now working from home dealing with a huge number of queries as constituents navigate the support that is being offered. Whether it’s families who have lost their income, those worried about older relatives, the complete confusion over supermarket deliveries, small businesses concerned about their employees - people are anxious. So this is a massive thank-you to all those who have every right to be more anxious than most – the people who cannot stay home because you’re working to keep the rest of us safe and the world turning. AM’s have been challenging Welsh Government to speed up provision of protective equipment. We haven’t just been applauding our health and care workforce - we’ve been relentlessly chasing that kit for you. But thanks also to our farmers, food processors, teachers, teaching assistants, cooks, refuse collectors, cleaners, shop workers, packers, delivery drivers – and council staff who are sorting out the council-tax breaks, free school meals and business grants. We have been reminded of the true meaning of ”society” by the astounding number of individuals, faith groups and voluntary organisations who deliver food, phone the lonely and even make safety equipment. You stepped up when you didn’t have to. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com
A MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF PORTHCAWL Dear Residents / Annwyl Preswylydd I do hope you and your loved ones are in good spirits and staying fit and healthy. I want to send this message to you, in support of everything that we are being asked to do during this difficult time. The people of Porthcawl have always risen to any challenge, and always supported their community when it has been in need. We are in need now; we need common sense, decency, care and respect for our fellow citizens. The good news is that after the call for action by government, people are by and large complying with the restrictions placed upon us, and I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken those messages on board and modified their way of life. It is vitally important that we comply with the restrictions placed upon us by Government, and by doing so we will reduce the risk of wider contamination, and we will save lives. We will also be supporting the efforts of the valiant key workers, who continue to put themselves at risk to look after us all. I urge you not to place any unnecessary burden upon the Police, healthcare professionals, pharmacies, those volunteering with local support agencies, shop workers, drivers, and the emergency services as a whole. We do not know how long our way of life will be disrupted, but we do know that every day we ignore the restrictions, is one day longer that we will be restricted. Eventually we will get past this emergency. We hope that our businesses will be able to re-open and thrive; they will need our support and I know local people will ‘shop local’ and help them get back on their feet. Porthcawl Town Council continues to operate a limited service and is working with all relevant agencies. On behalf of Porthcawl Town Council I want to thank all our emergency service workers, our medical professionals and all those currently volunteering to support our community; your efforts are immensely appreciated by everyone. In conclusion, if we keep calm, observe current restrictions, look out for one another and remain positive then we will emerge safely, and can start the process of rebuilding our community. With all best wishes, and stay safe. Thank you / Diolch yn fawr CLLR GRAHAM WALTER Mayor of Porthcawl grahamwalter@porthcawltown.co.uk

Local news MAYORS COMMUNITY FUND The Coronavirus issue has severely hampered our fund raising efforts and of course we were forced to postpone the Mayors Community Awards presentation night – hopefully this will be re-scheduled for October, all nominations still stand. Nevertheless I am pleased that in April we were able to send cheques to our three main beneficiaries. Cheques for £1,550 each were sent to Porthcawl Museum and Arts Society, Porthcawl Veterans Hub, and Prostate Cymru; these were interim payments pending a full financial reconciliation. During the year we were also able to send smaller sums to Ty Hafan and Diabetes Cymru totalling £580. Hopefully once this national emergency is over we can complete our planned activities and generate further funds of our nominated charities. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to the people and many businesses of Porthcawl for their generous support during my year of fund raising, and also special thanks to my fund raising committee. THANK YOU TO ALL SCHOOL HEADS, TEACHERS AND STAFF Easter is usually a time when schools take a well-deserved break, reflect on a busy spring term and prepare for forthcoming tests and exams. Not this year, however, as they stood united to deal with the challenging and developing corona virus situation that continues to confront us all. Dedicated heads, teachers and governing bodies have been continuing to plan innovative and creative ways to educate pupils who are on lockdown at home. Other teachers, teaching assistants and support staff are working tirelessly to provide emergency childcare at local schools acting as community hubs so that key workers can continue supporting essential services throughout this national crisis. Hundreds of catering staff are involved in providing eligible children with a freshly-made packed lunch, which are collected from 23 schools and delivered to another 320 pupils each day. And our administrative staff, caretakers and cleaners, without whom our schools could not open, are all going the extra mile. We are indebted to each and every one of them for their versatility and willingness to adapt. They deserve our thanks for showing such commitment and support to our children, young people and communities. Look out for further updates as the fight against the corona virus continues. WORKING TOGETHER TO SUPPORT LOCAL PEOPLE I hope you are all remaining safe and well during the Covid-19 corona virus pandemic. These last few weeks have proven to be extremely challenging for Bridgend County Borough Council, and we have sought to protect the most vulnerable while providing vital services. To achieve this, we have been working closely with a range of organisations. For example, to help relieve pressure at the Princess of Wales Hospital, we have set up 450 additional beds for people recovering from the corona virus. This has been partially achieved by working with the health board and businesses to bring three former care homes back into use. Many teachers and other professionals are volunteering to provide emergency childcare for key workers at local hubs we have set up, and we have worked alongside Kier to ensure that weekly recycling and fortnightly waste collections have continued despite major pressures on staffing. None of this has been easy, nor would it have been possible without the universal will to work in close partnership and help everybody get through these difficult times. I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this possible, and who is continuing to play a role in ensuring that Bridgend County Borough can respond to this unprecedented challenge. COUNCILLOR HUW DAVID Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council Tel 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk
IF WE CAN HELP…. In these difficult and uncertain times, please be assured that my team and I continue to work hard on your behalf. Although my office in Bridgend is closed, my staff and I are working from home and we are doing our best to answer all your calls and emails and to share important information through my social media channels. I am in regular contact with key organisations that are providing support such as Cwm Taf Morgannwg UHB, Bridgend Council, Welsh Government and South Wales Police together with some local charities. Through various forums, I have raised the issues to which you wanted answers. I have also taken part in my first online Welsh Assembly Plenary session and have questioned Welsh Ministers directly on your behalf. Many of you have already got in touch with me to ask questions about testing in Wales, how to get help if you are asked to self -isolate, the difficulty in accessing supermarket delivery slots online and the availability of PPE. Our key workers are working hard, in difficult circumstances, to care for people with corona virus. It is vital they can do their jobs safely and with confidence. Stay safe. Stay well. Poets corner TOGETHER
AS YOU LOOK OUT
In times of crisis and uncertainty We often wonder where we stand Fear and caution setting in As we go to hold another’s hand Social distance seems so unnatural Something we do not know But we must stand together now We must take control We must take responsibility We must do everything with care We must be there for others Even if it means not physically there We must be kind to one another We must not be selfish with greed We must put our elders first Listen to what our society needs We must support our local businesses As our friends may be at risk Of losing regular custom But we can help with just a click We must look after ourselves Keep our bodies and minds well We must focus on the positivity around us Read tales which without this would never tell We must focus on the simple things The things we may have taken for granted Because in this crazy busy world we live in We may have lost a bit of what we planted We have a world of opportunity Even when things like this seem dark We have an abundance of resources Which during times before us were stark We must explore our creative abilities Some we may not yet even know For now we have a chance To shine and let our talents grow Garden, cook, build, create Sing, dance, exercise and play Read, write, draw and paint To help keep anxieties at bay We must praise our public services Give them the recognition they deserve For without their commitment and resilience We would all be stuck in reverse So let’s all slow down And flatten this curve together For the action we take now Could affect our forever Deanna Griffiths, Porthcawl
As you look out through the window Raindrops streaming down outside, Like the teardrops of a relative, When a loved one has died. Tears are not a sign of weakness, They are a sign that you care, A sign of love and gratitude, Because they are no longer there. Tears will help you release some stress, And help your body to cope within, Your Mental Health will stabilise, So, your anxiety and emotions cannot win. It’s important to remember the good times, And to look after yourself, Because bereavement can hit anybody, No matter what your class or wealth. So, when you look out of the window, On a dreary rainy day with hurt and pain, Have a smile to yourself and shed a little tear, As you remember your memories again. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

DON’T RISK CONTRACTING IT TODAY In these troubled times, Full of fear and unrest, We must all work together in unity, And simply do our best. Think of those Key workers, Who often have no choice, In gratitude we will clap our hands, And say Thank You with our voice. We all need to think of personal surroundings, Clean your hands after a task, When you need to go near others space, Make them aware and politely ask. Covid-19 is a deadly virus, Don’t risk contracting it today, If it isn’t necessary to go somewhere, Please help everybody and stay away. With kindness from the public, And the business sector too, We can help to see a loved one, And do the everyday things we wish to do. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend

SHOECOLOGY Racks of shoes all stacked in pairs, Secondhand now, Oxfam wares. What would they tell if they could talk? Who danced the dance, who walked the walk?
MOTHER NATURES REVENGE Mother Nature was feeling poor and needed time to discover what she could do worldwide that would help her to recover
Children’s shoes, outgrown so fast, So short a life, yet built to last. Teenage trainers, hardly worn, Out of fashion, dumped with scorn.
At first she took a gentle approach as floods and fire filled the air but the benefits were hard to see and she continued to despair
Those old Ugg boots, last season’s best. Unloved now like all the rest. Granny shoes in frumpy tones, Protectors of those fragile bones.
But still the planes filled the sky and the cars were driven around nothing seemed to help her cause even when she shook the ground
Keep fit shoes, New Year’s resolve, Ditched in Feb as wills dissolve. Dancing shoes now pensioned off, He’ll never move like Darren Gough.
This approach did not work She needed to take a stance drastic action she must now take to help maintain the balance
Bridal white, confetti stained, Abandoned now, divorce proclaimed. Well to do or down at heel, What foibles do our shoes reveal? Judy Dee, Porthcawl
Man does not listen, he does not learn the warnings he won’t heed he runs around without a care just fuelling his greed
SERIOUS TIMES
She’s sorry that it’s come to this so a pandemic is on the scene it will spread across the globe known as COVID 19
Of those of us who survived the war, Nothing like panic buying. Today, it’s grab it while you can, These times are very trying. But then, we were, on rations, Could only have our share. Powdered milk, potato too, Was something we had to bear. But the threat came from skies, Not from a serious plague. It seems there is no remedy, The future very vague. God bless all the careers, Within the NHS. All the doctor, medics, With pressure from the press. Cannot go on holidays, Or trips down to the beach. No socialising anywhere, Two metres out of reach. Every Thursday evening we, We clap to praise the nurses. We hope when this is over, They will be rewarded, With money in their purses. The NHS was started by, A Welshman, we called him NYE. It would be a tragedy, To let this service die. Derek Evans, Pyle
now everyone is stuck inside going through their own nightmare while no pollution clogs her lungs and she can breathe fresh air She goes from strength to strength the trees, the grass, the flowers and while the world remains at rest she will restore her powers she hopes that man will learn from this and that we can all be free from pain but how long will the balance last before she has to step in again? Les Davies, Porthcawl
LIVING IN FEAR Everybody is living in fear, The Corona virus is worldwide, Worried about contracting the virus, Many in self-isolation trying to hide. Since the virus was announced, Panic buying everywhere, Many thoughtless bulk buying, With very little care. Key workers putting themselves at risk, In hospitals, trains and on the road, Terrible situations travellers stranded, Whilst holidaying and working abroad. All the people worldwide advised to wash their hands, To help end this dreadful cause, Key workers are still working, All the rest being told to stay indoors. Hopefully this will pass soon, As we all live with the strain, Sadly there is loss of lives, We pray as we feel their pain. David Boyce Brackla, Bridgend
RAINBOW Rain mixed with sunshine speaks out of God’s love Always – this promise, given after the Flood. I AM – is God’s name, He will always be there Never to leave you, so cast on Him your care. Bow, as for hunting – God still seeking his own, while On high is a rainbow surrounding his throne. Wonder! Yes, wonder at the height and depth of God’s love, For ‘tis He sent the rainbow to bring hope from above. Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

INTERESTING TALK AT THE PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB
A MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS OF TY ELIS
Before the lockdown began, Collette Rankmore (Senior Social Worker) & Sue Ponting (Senior occupational Therapist) gave a presentation talk on the various pathways within Social Services, to the Porthcawl Stroke Club, access points, which map out the various options available to the members. They were both very informal, friendly, but very professional in their approach, taking care in sensitivity and encouraged members to seek help if necessary. Many questions were asked and both women provided the right follow-up services for the members, which Social Services provide. Also, third sector support such as BAVO; which is a voluntary charitable agency, which has a wealth of knowledge on a huge range of local services; so, I’m sure we will be touch soon. The ladies also sent to us leaflets, which will be distributed to those who need them. We look forward to keeping in touch with Collette and Sue in the future and thank them both for taking time out of their busy schedules to support Porthcawl Stroke Club. Anyone wishing to join the Porthcawl Stroke Club, please contact Keith and Mary Duggan on (01656) 773376 or mobile number:07484250988. At present our venue as changed due to the Coronavirus outbreak and we are based in The Community Hub at Griffin Park. Barbara Matthews
The present situation with corona virus has touched everyone, maybe in different ways.
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Well, what a few last number of weeks these have been. It has given us all time to reflect on priorities and the things that are most important. For me as a Christian it has given me a little extra time to think of certain things in the bible in light of the current issue. I have thought a lot about Romans chapter 5. In Romans 5 Paul describes a comparison and a contrast between two major people in world history. They are Adam (the first man that ever lived) and Jesus. In simple terms, sin and death came into the world through Adam but life came into the world through Jesus. The bible asks us to put our trust in Jesus so that we can have true life (now and for eternity). There’s peace security, joy, wisdom and much more available right now in Jesus Christ. God is inviting you into a personal relationship with him today. It’s the best place you can place your life. I implore you to do exactly that! May God bless you! Neil Harvey

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH Someone once complained to me that the church was not patriotic enough. However, the church has never belonged to one nation or another. You or I can be patriotic, but to suggest the church owes allegiance to any one nation is ridiculous. In the early days of Christianity, the apostles, who had all been raised as Jews, had to figure out what to do with all the people of other faiths, and from other countries who suddenly wanted to follow the teachings of Jesus. The Book of Acts is the story of this amazing adventure in faith. In fact, it has so many parallels to the journey Nottage Chapel is on right now. Recently, many people who come to our services were not raised in our tradition, and like the early church, we are trying to figure out how best to welcome these people from different faith backgrounds; while, at the same time, we are learning from expressions of Christianity that are different from our own. That’s when we remember: It’s all one church, and it does not belong to us alone. God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Minister, Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My husband and I recently decided to split and now we are in the midst of the Covid 19 crisis. I desperately want to see a solicitor but know it will be difficult to see one face to face in the office for advice and to start Divorce proceedings. The atmosphere at home is very strained and I do not wish to wait for this crisis to be over. Answer:I truly appreciate how difficult it must be for you especially during this crisis and lockdown. The best of marriages and relationships will be put under strain during this uncertain period. Sadly, we anticipate that Divorces will spike following this crisis given the emotional, mental, physical and financial pressures of covid 19. I recommend that you consider whether it is the right time to send your husband letters from a solicitor and Divorce proceedings when you are both under the same roof, with little space and tensions are high. You may wish to wait. However, if you wish to set the wheels in motion, you can. Whilst the majority of solicitors’ offices are closed to the public, they continue to provide advice and guidance even in these very difficult times. WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A WILL IN PLACE AND CONSIDER INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE. Given the strange and unprecedented times of Covid-19, people are taking stock of their affairs and ensuring they have a Will to represent their wishes and intentions. If you die without having made a Will, your assets are automatically distributed according to the Rules of Intestacy. This may well have undesired consequences. When making a Will, you should firstly consider who your executors will be. These are the people you trust to administer your estate according to your will. You should next consider who you want to benefit from your estate. Your spouse or partner is typically the first beneficiary, other beneficiaries may include children, relatives, friends, charities. Your Will can name classes of beneficiary (eg all your grandchildren). Gifts can be put in trust rather than made outright. For example, you might use a trust to control assets that are being passed to children (or young adults) or to individuals who are incapable of looking after their own financial affairs. When preparing a Will, we always consider the Inheritance Tax position of your estate. Inheritance Tax (IHT) is chargeable on your estate if it exceeds the IHT nil rate band (NRB) (currently £325,000). If you leave your residence to your children, you can claim an additional £150,000 (As of April 2019) known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB). Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on the value of your estate in excess of the nil rate sum. Effective planning can substantially reduce the amount of tax that will be payable on your estate. If your estate is likely to exceed the nil rate sum, it is worth discussing how family trusts and other planning options could benefit you. If your estate is valued at less than the nil rate band, IHT is not payable. Equally IHT is not payable on any inheritance you leave to your spouse. In addition, if your own estate does not use up the full nil rate sum, then your spouse’s tax free allowance on their death will be proportionately increased. The tax treatment of family trusts is complex and depends on the type of family trust being used. We can draft your Will and arrange for it to be signed in compliance with Government enforced lock down. Please do not hesitate to contact us. WILLS AND POWERS OF ATTORNEY It is a good idea every so often to update your plans in order to provide clarity for your loved ones. Every few years you should update your will or consider making a will if you have not done so before. A will is an important document as it will set out what you want to happen to your assets upon your death. The assets of a person who dies without having made a will pass to their next of kin, rather than to a nominated beneficiary. There is a “family tree” of people who would inherit in the event of an intestate person passing away, so if you want to be clear about who will inherit your estate upon your death, it is very important to make a will setting out who is to benefit. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is advisable if you wish to put in place provision for another person to make decisions if you were to lose mental capacity. An LPA is a document which allows you to nominate a person or persons to deal with your affairs if you become incapacitated. There are two different forms of this document; one deals with financial affairs and the other health and welfare. It is also a good idea to create a list of your passwords for your bank accounts, email account and so forth. This will avoid practical difficulties for your loved ones later on. Obviously, this list should be stored in a secure place and you should let your executors know where it is located. Perhaps this document is best stored securely with your will. Many solicitors and banks offer a will storage service. If any of these issues affect you, it is worth contacting solicitor in order to obtain further advice. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

Business & finance SO, IT’S BUSINESS AS USUAL?
WHAT IS YOUR INVESTMENT RISK SCORE?
Well, not quite, in fact it’s very different from the norm. Never in my lifetime did I think I’d see what we’re all experiencing right now, with Coronavirus having brought the World to its knees, along with the economies of all developed countries and beyond, as lock-down keeps us all in doors. Yet, despite the gloom that descended so quickly and throughout the pandemic, the financial services sector has still been operating and showing remarkable resilience. Top of the list for calls we’re getting at the moment involve remortgaging as there are lenders still offering great deals for those whose deal is coming to an end within the next three months, followed by Later Life Lending as the retired generation seeks to help shore up the finances of their families with financial help at a time when jobs appear to be dependent on whether the employer survives the downturn. Even the legal sector has seen new methods of work, with Solicitors completing on transactions by approved remote methods, so the wheels continue to turn. Then, morbid though it sounds but understandably, people are reviewing their life assurance cover and funeral plans, another area we specialise in, and these can be sorted remotely as well, so give us a call regarding any of the above and we’ll be pleased to speak with you – call 01656 782545 / 07768 418308, between 10 am and 8 pm, seven days a week.
I recently saw a retired gentleman who wanted investment advice. Given that he was advancing in years I automatically assumed he would be a cautious investor, but far from it, he was a particularly astute and adventurous investor, so how wrong was I? It just goes to show before giving advice it is important to “know your client” and never make assumptions. At the same time, you have to help clients to understand risk. Last year a client sent me his son to purchase a pension and he said to make sure his investment was safe. Given that he had 40 years before retirement the last place I was going to advise was safe as that would have limited his potential growth. e.g. £200 per month invested in a cautious portfolio would return £250,000 less than an adventurous portfolio over 40 years (a guide only). There’s a risk that sometimes investors are not taking sufficient risk and confine themselves to poor growth from lack of understanding their future needs. This is very subjective of course and it does largely depend on your “time in the markets” or your “duration for investment” as it’s key in the advice process. Chasing returns for the wrong reason is also dangerous which is why it’s so important to have an advisor check out your risk appetite and find investment products and funds that suit your current situation. Many people don’t know where their pension or ISA funds are invested and are curiously disturbed when they find out! Here again it is best to seek an advisor to analyse your circumstances and make changes where necessary before it’s too late. Please don’t “Google” how to invest your savings! DIY investment advice is nearly as dangerous as going on-line to check out your medical symptoms and it drives doctors up the wall as invariably you’ll get it wrong! If you want to know your risk profile please ask us for a questionnaire and we’ll tell you for nothing, EMAIL Info@ abacusassurance.com

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
email your report info@seasidenews.co.uk
CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB “The world’s favourite season is spring; all things seem possible in May” (Edward Teale) so it’s possible the lock down will be over, garden centres will be open and we can buy new plants, and hug our friends! Still, lots to do in the garden: hoeing, deadheading, pond clearing, lawn mowing and patio cleaning. When you run out of that there is always a bit of hedge trimming. Remember disturbing nesting birds is illegal; check before you start, you don’t want homeless baby birds on your conscience! Now the weather is warming up it’s important to water thirsty crops like tomatoes, cucumber and courgettes regularly, make sure the soil stays moist but not water-logged. Only water ground around the plant, not the leaves as water evaporates fast on hot leaves then it doesn’t benefit the plant! Have you noticed when you mow dandelions down they regrow with very short stems so the flowers are just above the grass, I know this is adaptation but I think its spite, cos they always slide under the mower blades! I was in my herb garden yesterday and one of my plants told me I was a useless gardener, I think it was discouragemint! Chris Early
We are in very strange and worrying times but one place we can find peace of mind, joy and hope is in our gardens. Spring has sprung despite the happenings we face and we are looking to embrace the new growing season. With frost no more we will be looking to plant out our summer bedding plants and begin to plant up our pots and hanging baskets. The Coronavirus situation has forced us to cancel our Annual Plant Sale due to be held on the 2nd May. However, we are trying to get our plants out to our members by means of non contact doorstep deliveries, which is providing a complete lockdown doesn’t come into force. The busiest time of the year in the garden is being curtailed by the virus situation but hopefully the keen veg growers have their seedlings and plants ready to go. The flower borders are already graced by our faithful shrubs and perennials can hopefully become colourful once more and brighten our gardens. To keep in touch with the Club and the latest developments please follow us in Facebook. We will open again as soon as permitted and a warm welcome will once more be extended to present and new members. Susan Ford

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
The choir celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020. To mark the event (and before the lockdown) an anniversary dinner was held in the High Tide. The evening was a fantastic success. Following introductions and anecdotes from Vice President David NewtonWilliams and a very nice dinner, the choristers, wives and guests were thoroughly entertained by the wonderful Mike Doyle. Thanks goes to our longest serving chorister and evenings organiser, Stuart Philips. A return visit to entertain the staff and students of the Business School of Cardiff University was again well received. In the wonderful setting of the Cardiff City Hall, the St. David’s Day themed evening concluded with the Chinese students joining in with the phonetically translated ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’. Always a great evening. The choir performed at the St. David’s Day concert at Medow Lane Primary School. The children joined in with the choir on some of the welsh classics and a thoroughly enjoyable morning was had by all. One of our choristers Phil Benjamin is currently a very proud man indeed. Grandfather of the brilliant Sam Costelow, outside half of the Wales under 20 team and man of the match in the winning team against England. Scoring 18 of the 23 points including the match winning last minute drop goal; an emerging superstar. Ian Williams
STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I’m sure you know by now that your favourite magazine will not be delivered while this horrid virus is around, but keep on reading it online. Normally I’m writing about some great gigs coming up but of course all tours and festivals are cancelled. I was speaking to a promoter who told me that on the day the lockdown started several thousand flyers and over 100 posters turned up for three shows he had arranged, while another was telling me about the festival he had to postpone after working on it for the last nine months. This virus is going to hit hard the “gig economy”, pubs, clubs, venues and of course musicians and businesses in general including the self-employed. If and when we get out of 36 | seaside news
this current situation I feel that a lot of businesses will sadly not recover. However, on a more positive note, it’s great to see the local public coming together and helping the most vulnerable and every Thursday at 8.00pm giving our brilliant key workers a well-earned applause. Next month I will review some new local bands’ videos, which will help keep you entertained in these unprecedented and lonely days of self-isolation. Keep safe. Deadline date for the Online Version in June is: Sunday 25th May A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
With film production work presently brought to a halt by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the realisation that film makers are a pretty superfluous lot compared with those brave doctors and nurses battling every day in hospitals to keep people alive, as well as many key workers helping those of us in self-isolation to be supplied with essentials, my thoughts turned back to a previous career, because although I have been a film producer for over thirty years, before that I was a freelance journalist specialising in woodwork projects. So rather than pass each day in a state of wishful thinking (along the lines of “will things ever return to normal?”) I decided to pick up my woodworking tools again and put them to some practical use. Two years ago I started – but didn’t finish – a postbox to go in the porch and the wood was lying around the house gathering dust. With no excuse now to keep leaving it untouched, I got out my portable workbench and set myself the task of finishing it. There is, of course, one catch: where can I buy the bits needed to finish it off? Wait until next month, when I hope to be able to tell you, and show the finished result! Sport reports PORTHCAWL RUNNERS
From little things, big things grow. The germination of a dream of Charles Jones ten years ago at a house warming party, our club sprouted into existence as Porthcawl Runnerslife, and later the name would be shortened to Porthcawl Runners. Affiliated to the Rugby Club, in recent years we have enjoyed our biggest successes as a Club. The roots of camaraderie have never been stronger and we have been able to branch off in many directions. The trunk of our committee and coaches sees Lucy Jones at the centre now as newly appointed Chair, with Alwyn Thomas retained as Treasurer and Toni Cosson Secretary. We embrace the future together - so many more shared dreams will blossom. So the virus hits and throws up many challenges for a running club whose watchwords are togetherness, community, friendship, support etc. A plan was put in place to allow assistance and integration remotely instead. An online network enabled members to share their personal training at a socially acceptable distance (alone) and to also take part in weekly challenges devised and presented by various club personnel who increasingly found themselves with far too much time on their hands! Let’s hope the following months are more positive. Until then, many of our members are volunteering around Porthcawl to help out those who most need it. This includes Lisa English (pictured) who put on her running top and gave up her time to deliver medicines in the community. Stay safe. By Nicky Middleton and Wilfy Edwards

PORTHCAWL RNLI VOLUNTEER LAUNCHES ONLINE GYM CLASSES TO KEEP THE COMMUNITY FIT
Local gym owner and Porthcawl RNLI crew member Gareth Charnock has launched live online gym classes open to the whole community aimed at getting them fit. Gareth who has been a member of the RNLI volunteer crew at Porthcawl since 2006 featured in the last series of the BBC TV series Saving Lives at Sea. The popular documentary series showcases the lifesaving work of the RNLI. Gareth owns local gym Porthcawl Health and Fitness Club and was keen to continue offering something for his members and the local community when the enforced closure of gyms was announced due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Gareth said, ‘when the news came that we had to close the gym I was devastated. The gym isn’t just a place people come to train, I see my members as one big family. I really wanted to offer them a way to continue to train together from their own homes. ‘After doing some research last weekend I found an app we could use to run live online gym classes. Initially this was just for our members but with the Government instruction on 23 March for people to stay at home and avoid gathering outdoors I’ve decided to offer the classes to the local community too. You don’t have to be a member of the gym to join the online classes. I hope in these difficult times our online classes will help prevent social isolation and help people’s health, mental health and well being. ‘Working alongside my other instructors Heather Barnett, Steve Powell and Vicky Jones we’ll be offering a few online classes a day and are very much looking forward to getting the local community fit in their own homes.’ Porthcawl Lifeboat Operations Manager Phil Missen MBE said, ‘Gareth is a great member of our volunteer crew and always keen to help others. As a station we are proud of the fundraising and support of Gareth and his gym members who regularly raise funds for us to help save lives at sea. He genuinely cares not just for his gym members but wants to help everyone from the local area during these difficult times. I think it is really admirable that he is offering these live online training classes to the wider community. I’m undecided yet whether I’ll sign up and join in!’ If you’re interested in taking part in an online class email: info@porthcawlhealthandfitness.co.uk
