Dear Editor, Incredibly, we have now raised over £39,000 - thank you so so so much to you kind people who have raised or donated recently - great effort and very generous! We have set a target of £40,000 to buy much needed equipment specifically for Children having Radiotherapy in Velindre. Emyr, as have many other children, had Radiotherapy as part of their cancer treatment and although staff were fantastic, there was very little specifically for Children. The Consultants and other staff at Velindre are delighted with our idea and have research to support the equipment we aim to purchase that will mean children needing less anaesthetic, being less frightened and that will also help their parents. Whilst working hard to raise funds for Velindre, the caravans are very much in use. We have restocked and made some repairs - Thanks to Charlie Seaborne for repairing the sofa bed, Martin Hannover for repairing the carpet and All Saints Church for the generous donation to repair the damaged outside area. Emyr’s Orange Ball is on Saturday May 12th; we are incredibly grateful for those who have already donated for the auction and raffle but we are still very much in need of items e.g: prizes, vouchers for an experience etc Emyr’s Bike ride- Brecon to Pyle, Riding to Remember’ on Sunday May 27th. £20 entry fee & sponsorship. Local history THE FIRST GETAWAY CAR

On 21st December 1911, a French anarchist gang made history by using the first getaway car. The car, a 1910 DelaunayBelleville luxury limousine (pictured), registration number 783X-3, was stolen on 14th December 1911 by four members of the gang who changed the number plate to 668-X-8. A week later they used the car to intercept a bank messenger en route to a bank in Paris. At 8.25 am the messenger arrived by tram carrying a satchel and briefcase. A gang member grabbed the satchel and briefcase, but the messenger would not let go. Shots were fired, wounding the messenger. With the satchel and briefcase in their hands, the gang jumped into their getaway car, executed a screeching U-turn and sped away. They left the car in Dieppe, which suggested to the police that they had fled across the channel. However, they were still in France. In hiding, they opened the satchel and discovered 5,126 francs while the briefcase contained 130,000 francs-worth of useless cheques and bonds. If only they had looked inside the messenger’s jacket where they would have discovered a wallet crammed with 20,000 francs. PORTHCAWL MUSEUM After further renovation works during the winter months Porthcawl Museum once more opened its doors to the public at the end of March. While repair works continue in parts of the building other exhibitions and displays have been updated and repositioned. Current exhibits include the Porthcawl Railway, Maritime Porthcawl, The Great War and taking pride of place RAF 100 which marks the centenary of the RAF. Visiting the RAF 100 display last week was Air Commodore Adrian Williams, Air Officer Wales he was accompanied by Flying Officer Martyn D Davies, Holding Officer RAF100 Wales, MOD St Athan and the Member of Parliament for Bridgend Madeline Moon MP. Air Commodore Williams commented “This really is a most interesting Museum, and I congratulate the volunteer team for all their efforts to commemorate the RAF and its people over the last 100 years.” David Swidenbank 20 | seaside news

WHAT NEXT FOR THE INNER DOCK?

Salt Lake Car Park enters a new era. BCBC have bought the lease, intending to develop the site. Except for the odd circus, bonfire or car parking area, it has lain almost untouched for 75 years. What of its past? Originally, before the arrival of the Brogden designed dock in 1865, the coastline reached what is now the dual carriageway. The Eastern Promenade was built to encompass an inner dock area, from which coal carrying ships exported to all parts of the globe. In 1906, this enterprise proved no longer viable and the inner dock officially closed; but as the town developed, it continued to be used for importing building materials. Then, following the end of WW1, R Hayes leased it as a ship-breaking yard; during which time, 14 destroyers were broken up. From 1926, as the town grew as a seaside resort, a swimming pool was built at the north east end of the dock, whilst rowing boats used the rest of water. A miniature railway proved an added attraction from 1935. However, the dock was filled in between 1937 -1942 in time for the Americans to arrive. the judges. The parade was followed by a range of family fun activities organised by the Parent Council. There was also family fun to be had during the Class Oren, Glas Golau and Porffor Shine Days. Parents and children enjoyed sharing art activities developing their skills to produce some lovely work. Sport Relief saw us walking a mile and the whole school dancing to raise over £150. Work has started on clearing our new vegetable garden and we are collecting plastic bottles to make a greenhouse. We are taking applications for our September 2018 Nursery Class so if you would like your child to join please contact us. Sue Jones

Brynteg School held their school Eisteddfod on 14th and 15th March. The talent on display from pupils was outstanding, the acts included plenty of variety: singing, acting, dancing and recitals. All performances were extremely entertaining and a fantastic day was had by all. On 9th March a number of year 8 and year 9 pupils took part the South Wales Final of the F1 in Schools competition. There were three entry teams and six awards were obtained by Brynteg School in various categories. One team went on to compete in the F1 National Final held on 19th March in Silverstone. Pupils exhibited their designs and marketing skills through a series of presentations and racing and were rewarded with the ‘Judges Recommendation’ award for their overall performance and quality. What an achievement! In other news the Bear Creek rugby team from Canada visited Brynteg School in March with Brynteg pupils acting as hosts. The Canadians had a fantastic experience staying with our pupils and making friends for life. The rugby was interesting and closely fought with all players gaining valuable experience. Jen L Davies

Their acting and speaking superbly brought to life the true meaning of this festival. As part of the celebrations, parents and families came to watch the Easter Bonnet and Decorated Egg parade and we did not let a cold wind spoil the fun, despite having to chase some wayward hats! The winners of this competition were thrilled with their prizes though the amazing entries made this a very tough job for

Pupils in Class 3 led a Special ‘Come on in’ event on Tuesday 27th March to promote supporting Fairtrade farmers and producers. Pupils shared their ideas during Fairtrade fortnight and have spent their time organising and advertising a variety of games and refreshments the Fairtrade café. They wrote their own letters to invite School Governors to the event. All classes visited the event and played ‘Fairtrade’ games raising awareness of Fairtrade to all pupils. At the end of the school day Year 3 invited their parents to join them in the café. They also had a Fairtrade Raffle, with 4 Fairtrade hampers as prizes. THE BRIDGE NEWS Masai Warriors, Ogmore Castle and Rock School! Just another average month at The Bridge! KS2/3 visited Ogmore Castle. Luckily no one managed to fall in the river! KS2 enjoyed a visit from Rachael the first aid trainer demonstrating bandaging, resuscitating and putting their teacher in the recovery position. She’s still there! We were privileged to receive a visit from two ladies of the Masai. Pupils enjoyed the tribal dancing, which involved jumping whilst creating music with jewellery. They also took the opportunity to raise awareness of the serious issues affecting the tribe. KS3/4 had the opportunity to give their views on smacking children. Cynffig’s BBC News Report team have been extremely busy this term researching topics from sexism in sport to teachers having guns in American schools. Together they have produced an impressive news bulletin and articles, which can be viewed at: www.cynffigcomprehensive.co.uk/bbc-school-report-day A fantastic time was had by 79 pupils and 10 members of staff at Disneyland Paris to celebrate the wonderful Welsh weekend. Pupils and staff faced their fears and took on Big Thunder Mountain; a ‘magical’ time was had by all. Year 9 and 10 pupils thoroughly enjoyed a live interactive performance of ‘Twelfth Night’ by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Our pupils posed insightful questions to the actors during the interval and were delighted to be acknowledged at the end of the performance. Finally we are proud that Cynffig was selected as one of the Lead Creative schools to take part in ‘TATE Exchange’ a live learning event at the Tate Modern in London from 24 – 29 April. Visitors to the event were taken on a journey through the ‘Five Creative Habits of Mind’. Reading Cafés As part of World Book Day celebrations, we invited family members to come see how we develop reading in our school. Nursery and Reception Lots of the parents came and really enjoyed listening to children participate in the story telling of we are going on a bear hunt. Parents enjoyed listening to the children and learning about different activities they can learn and do at home. YEAR 1 studied the book the Gingerbread Man. First they did a quiz, then the children pretended to be the characters from the story in a hot seating scenario. YEAR 2 read the book ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’. First they rearranged the story, then they had to skim and scan and look for the adjective that the author had used. They also used the power of YET. YEAR 3 & 4 had been learning about the story ‘Romeo and Juliet’ They used the ipads to show their family members an app called ‘Puppet pals’ where you can make your own mini movies using characters. The parents were quizzed on how well they listened to the story. The children from years 5 and 6 had been studying the story Gwenllian. There was a variety of activities such as hot seating, group reading and role play. They showed the parents how tricky some of the questioning was. Our Easter Celebration was an unparalleled success! A glorious display of Easter bonnets, cards, decorated eggs, t-shirts and gardens! There were some wonderful entries, all the hard work that had gone into them, it must have taken hours! It was so difficult to judge, they were all worthy winners in the eyes of the judges. The standard gets better every year, a massive thank you to all the parents and everybody who came to support their children and the school. The singing was a joy to hear, a mixture of hymns and Easter songs. The winners were: Millie Williams, Finley Penny, Roseali Owen and Summer Andrews with their bonnets. KENFIG DUNES

I went for a walk to Kenfig dunes today, the sights that I saw blew me away, was it the beautiful views or the wildlife to see? No it was the dog poo on the floor and in the tree. I would not let my children run free, but sadly dog owners weren’t as careful as me. To let your dog’s run out of your sight, and jump on my children is just not right. Responsible dog owners have them under Control, on a lead they can still walk and achieve their excercise goal. He won’t bite he’s friendly some owners may beg, in the few seconds before he starts humping my leg. I just want to go and use what is local, without dogs and their poo becoming so focal. NEW SERVICE AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY A new community-based way of screening for heart disease and strokes is giving people the tools they need to live to a healthy old age. Forty to 64-year-olds living in some of the ABMU health board’s less affluent areas are being invited to have a cardiovascular disease check if they are not already being treated for a chronic condition. The idea is to catch people who may not normally go to see their doctor but whose lifestyles are storing up health problems for them later in life. It’s already making a big difference to people in north Bridgend, where the scheme has been launched.

Neil Fraser, 62, pictured here with healthcare support worker Louise Kelly, was expecting a good result from the test at Tondu parish hall because he is lean and very active. “I was under the impression that I was fit and healthy because I don’t drink or smoke and I exercise a lot,” said the warehouse manager from Llangeinor. “I was expecting my heart age to be under my real age, but it was actually over. My blood pressure and cholesterol are too high as well, apparently because of what I eat, and my stress levels. “This test has been a huge benefit to me. I couldn’t remember the last time I had my blood pressure or cholesterol checked and if I hadn’t have come here today I wouldn’t have known. “It’s opened my eyes and made me realise some people are 30 | seaside news

walking around with a health time bomb. I can change what I eat and I will. The staff here are lovely and they give you ways to tackle the problems. I can’t recommend this service enough.” Health care support workers Louise Kenny, Heather Dawes and Anne Williams are carrying out the checks, which are designed to screen for the risk of developing conditions like coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis and stroke. Each one takes 45 minutes and begins with the patient being weighed and having their height and waist measured. A fingerprick cholesterol test is given and blood pressure taken too. Patients are asked about their family health history, and their habits around diet, exercise, smoking and drinking. At the end of the assessment each person is given a heart age, which can be quite different from their actual age, and told what risk they have of developing cardiovascular disease over the next few years.

Heather Jenkins, 51, from Brynmelin, pictured with healthcare support worker Ann Williams, was at the clinic to find out if her attempts to lower her cholesterol levels had been successful. “I was worried about coming here today but it’s been really positive for me. I joined a gym in May last year and did a health MOT and found that my cholesterol level was very high at 7.9. “Since then I’ve been exercising, lost a stone in weight and changed my eating habits. I was nervous about getting my results

today but I was really happy to hear that my cholesterol level is 5 now, which is normal.” Heather is encouraging anyone who gets an invitation for a cardiovascular disease check to take advantage of the opportunity to find out more about their heart health. “Personally I wouldn’t go to the doctor unless I was really unwell. It’s a faff to make an appointment and I don’t like to bother them. “But I think this is a very good idea. Unless you do a check like this you might never know if you had high cholesterol.”

Health care support worker Louise Kenny, left, said: “Even if you think you live a healthy lifestyle, a check-up like this can reveal hidden problems. “We had one gentleman attending whose heart age was 34 years older than he was because of his smoking, family history, high blood pressure and cholesterol.” After completing her assessment at Tondu parish hall, Sian Howell, 49, from Sarn, discovered that her heart age was 56, but was given information by Ann Williams on how she could bring that back down to 49 by exercising and changing her eating habits to include foods like fish, avocados, nuts, porridge, olive oil and avoiding saturated and hydrogenated fats. “I want to lose weight so I am going to join the gym at work. My results were not ideal but they were better than I thought they would be,” she said. “It has set my mind at ease, which is good because I wouldn’t normally go to see my doctor.”

Hopefully with funding we will roll it out to the Afan Valley and beyond.” Patients are invited by letter to ring up and make an appointment at a time convenient for them. “The take-up of the scheme has been twice as high as we were expecting it to be,” said Heather Dawes. “We can’t believe how popular it has been.” “A lot of people say they feel more comfortable coming here than to the doctors,” added Anne Williams. “It’s a friendly atmosphere and people are really taking on board the advice we give them.” Left, Heather Davies weighs patient Lisa Rosser, from Tondu. Porthcawl Independent Alliance - Let’s take Porthcawl Forward

An interesting fact emerged from a public meeting held in Porthcawl to discuss proposals to scrap bus subsidies on three routes serving the town. And it was that car parking revenue from the town contributes £400k a year to the coffers of BCBC while the bus subsidies due to be axed amount to just one tenth of that - £40K. Is it fair for all the car park profit to drain away into the council’s unspecified spending while crucial services in Porthcawl which provide connectivity and help combat social exclusion are scrapped?. And if those bus routes disappear, will there be a greater cost from the loss of custom to the town centre because people who rely on those buses will no longer be able to access any shops or businesses there. If some of them then close, the council will no longer get the business rates that they pay. So we are forced to ask if BCBC has done any cost benefit analysis not only of the financial costs of their proposals but also of the unintended social consequences of leaving people unable to reach the new health centre or engage in any social activities that include shopping and visiting friends and family.

The new absorbent hygiene products collection is proving to be hugely popular across the county borough, and nearly 10,000 households have signed up to the scheme since it was launched in June 2017. So far, 662 tonnes have been diverted from going to landfill and sent to the pioneering Nappicycle plant in Ammanford instead. Here, the waste is processed so that all of the recyclable materials can be recovered and re-used in products ranging from fibre boards to acoustic panelling and more. This is really positive, especially as the average child goes through 5,520 nappies before they are potty trained, and each nappy can take up to 500 years before it fully breaks down. The scheme can also be used to dispose of wipes, paper tissues, stoma bags, adult incontinence pads and nappies, absorbent bed sheets, plastic gloves and disposable aprons. Last month it was a pleasure to attend the launch of Tenovus Cancer Care’s Big Birthday Raffle to mark the charity’s 75th birthday. The charity is hoping to raise vital funds to support its mobile units. It was also wonderful to see the Tenovus Bridgend Sing with Us choir again- another stunning performance. There will be many events over the coming year to mark the 75th birthday including a ‘Light up the Night’ walk by Aberystwyth Friends of Tenovus, a ‘Hymns and Pimms’ party hosted by Aberdare Friends of Tenovus and an evening with Rob Brydon at a birthday ball in June at the Celtic Manor Resort. The stunning transformation of the Jennings Building in Porthcawl and the new ‘Y Bont’ café and meeting space next to South Wales Police in Waterton were the big winners at this year’s Building Excellence Awards. The awards recognise the quality of workmanship shown by constructors in complying with building regulations, demonstrating the highest standards of technical innovation, and constructing buildings which look great. They are organised by the council’s building control team, which carries out more than 7,000 inspections every year - from checking the foundations of a new house to ensuring that the steel structures of an industrial project are up to standard. The Jennings and the Y Bont café took five of the nine awards between them. Best extension or alteration went to Pyllau House in Coytrahen, and best individual new home was presented to ‘Bayleaves’ in Marlpit Lane, Porthcawl. Bettws Primary School took best educational building, and the best high volume new housing development was awarded to the Pentre Felin development on Maesteg Road in Tondu. The winners will now compete at the South Wales Local Authority Building Control Awards, then hopefully the UK awards later in the year – good luck to them, and well done.

Following a report from the Children’s Society which recognises that young people leaving care for the first time are particularly vulnerable to falling into debt, Bridgend County Borough Council has agreed to make them exempt from having to pay council tax until they are 25 years old. The move is intended to provide a helping hand as they learn to become more self-reliant and capable of living independently. Managing finances can be a daunting prospect for anyone tackling it for the first time, but for someone leaving care who doesn’t have parental support, it is particularly challenging. In our role as corporate parents, we hope that the move will give young people leaving our care a stronger start as they adapt to living independently. In another recent move, the council has scrapped fees for the burial or cremation of children and young people who are under 18 years old. We’ve increased the age limit for incurring burial fees from 12 to 18 as part of a campaign led by Swansea East MP Carolyn Harris, which has been recognised by Welsh Government. The council fully supports both initiatives, and we hope that they will help our communities through difficult times.

GLOBAL TRADE, LOCAL JOBS With Brexit one year away and the confusion still raging over the pros and cons of alignment with Europe, it is worth pondering the local impact of global trade. The UK is a trading nation, and a global one at that. Between 1997 and 2011 our exports grew from £172bn to £308bn. However, these are just numbers, what do they mean for the local area? In short, exporting means stability, growth and jobs. 85% of Companies in the UK say that they have achieved a level of growth they could not have without exporting. These advantages can only be gained when exporting, goods or services moving from one economic structure to another, is carried out in as smooth a way as possible. This can come down to things as simple as the colour of the ink you use to sign a contract, all differences create delay, delay increases costs, costs lead to less growth and less growth means fewer jobs. There will always be necessary barriers between Nation States, but the friction which delays exporting and trade can be overcome when Countries agree to follow the same rules, enforced by a single body. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Jesus preached, “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe the Good News” (Mark 1 v 15). This message is simply this: When Jesus came 2000 years ago it was the fulfilment of many Old Testament prophecies that said a King would come who would destroy the works of the kingdom of darkness and set people free from it’s power. The power of death would be one of those works. Jesus came to set people free and offer them eternal life! As he did then, so he does now - he calls people to repent and believe. This means to turn to him and to put our trust in him as the King that God sent. Jesus is King of the whole universe and everything in it. Through his conquering of death in his resurrection he is now the Lord. We will do well to get to know Jesus personally so we can also experience the gift of eternal life - and also the wonderful blessings that it can bring into our lives now! Neil Harvey

BRIDGEND TOWN TWINNING NEWS Bridgend Town Twinning Association (B.T.T.A.) recently welcomed a delegation of 10 representatives from their twin town of Villenave d’Ornon in France. The Mayor of Bridgend Town Council Mr. Stuart Baldwin formally received the delegation and provided them with a buffet lunch at Carnegie House. Discussions took place between the Twinning Associations of Bridgend and Villenave d’Ornon to arrange forthcoming student and adult exchanges. During their stay in Bridgend the delegates also travelled to the Principality Stadium to support France in their Six Nations clash with Wales. A disappointing result for them but a Welsh win was great for us. Sixteen students from Brynteg and Bryntirion Comprehensive Schools have recently visited Villenave d’Ornon and their host students will travel to Bridgend in April. A full week of activities and visits is being planned and B.T.T.A. is very grateful to local families for hosting these students. In May, a mixed choir ‘Chorale du Lac’ from Villenave d’Ornon will visit Bridgend and concerts are being arranged with Tabernacle Music Society for Friday 18th May at 7pm and Sounds Familiar at All Saints Church, Porthcawl on Monday, May 21st at 7pm. We celebrated Easter last month in the traditional way, a nice hot lunch followed by an Easter Bonnet parade. Those members who made their bonnets paraded around the Talbot whilst other diners and the judges serenaded them with the Easter Parade song – in your Easter bonnets. The judges all agreed that the turn- out was good, and chose the only male who had made a bonnet as the winner. Miniature eggs and bunnies were handed out afterwards. We are now at the start of the new financial year, and this means subscription time! Tools for Africa We were delighted to have a visit from the Mayor of Porthcawl - Councillor Lorrie Desmond Williams to the workshop on 20th March - happy to meet the team who were working that day. Welcomed by the Chairman Mark James, and shown around the workshop by David Cook the workshop manager, The Mayor is familiar with tools and enjoyed the intricacies of why hand drills are only sent if they are double pinions, and saws set and sharpened according to whether they are rip saws or cross cut saws! These include three electrician kits of varying sizes, one large auto mechanics kit, a group size carpentry kit and a building kit. We are also sending haberdashery kits and several sewing machines. These tools all look immaculate, we know they will be much appreciated, well looked after and well used by those who have completed their training, for tools without training is no good, and training without tools is no good either. SUMMER PLANETS Summer 2018 will be remembered for the number of bright planets that can be seen in the evening sky. Venus will be a permanent feature, rising higher and higher in the western sky and becoming ever brighter as summer progresses. The giant planet Jupiter will be visible in the east after sunset and although it’s brighter than any star, it will not outshine Venus. This summer Mars will be at its brightest since 2003 when it was at its closest for 60,000 years. By late summer Mars will be twice as bright as Jupiter and easily identified by its bright red colour. Even Saturn will put on a fine appearance with its rings presented favourably towards Earth. The key to finding these planets is not to look too high in the sky as all are positioned in constellations that remain stubbornly near the horizon. For those lucky enough to be travelling abroad for holidays, the planets will be much higher in the sky and therefore a great deal brighter. Definitely worth packing a pair of binoculars to explore the area of sky around the planets which is full of exciting nebulae and star clusters. Clive Down FRAS

TRINITY CHURCH We enjoyed some special services over the Easter period and have some exciting plans to report. On Saturday 12th May we have our May fayre from 10am to 1pm in Trinity Hall. There will be a tombola, cake, bricabrac & craft stalls as well as refreshments and a raffle. On Saturday 19th May we are celebrating the Royal Wedding with live TV on a big screen and lunch with coffee and snacks. All are welcome to attend. LIFE WITH PORTHCAWL LIONS Well the date you have all been waiting for - the start of our car boot sales at the rugby ground has been confirmed as Sunday 6th May 8am -1pm, £6/car. Following on the next day, 7th May Bank Holiday Monday, is our annual May Fayre at All Saints Church which starts at 11am until 4pm. We have lots of craft stalls, BBQ, dog show with judging at 1pm, bric-a-brac, teddy bears picnic at 2pm with stories, teddy walk and refreshments. One of our incidents in March saw us using our new state of the art binoculars to accurately locate a casualty on Witches Point, Southerndown (4.5 miles away), from which we calculated the grid reference. This was sent to UK Coastguard, who passed to Llantwit Major Coastguard Rescue Team, to safely recover the casualty. We were guests of Porthcawl RNLI recently, when we visited the station. We also attended the Coastguard Helicopter Base at MOD St Athan and had an excellent tour of their facilities and helicopters. Thanks to both for their hospitality. We were invited to Porthcawl Town Council to receive a plaque in appreciation of our services to the community and were proud to accept the honour. At the end of April we held our Choral Evening at All Saints Church. Thanks to all who performed and supported this successful and enjoyable event, where so much talent was on display. We recently met Natalie Wilson who is cycling 5000 miles around the UK coastline, to raise awareness of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH We hear a lot of talk these days about lost increasing toughness and lost tenderness. The writer of the book of James suggests the divine origin of gentleness and that origin may matter more than we think. Gentleness turns the tide of a conversation, when we respond with a smile to a rude person. It changes the tone of meetings, when we insert a joke where everyone else has decided to take matters too seriously. It changes what we talk about regarding the government’s austerity cutbacks, when we insert a fact about how some families have a pound for every twenty pence other families have to their names. How do we say something like that with gentleness? We say it quietly, softly, and slowly. We acknowledge every time we complain about how austerity measures are hitting us that they have hit others longer and harder. What is gentle about such truth? It takes the long view. PORTHCAWL U3A U3A stands for the University of the Third Age - but please don’t be put off by our name! We’re not a bunch of dusty intellectuals - we’re a dynamic self-help organisation for people no longer in full time employment offering educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly, accessible environment right here in our seaside community. April was another exciting month. Our regular interest group meets at venues across Porthcawl covered 42 different activities from creative writing to crafts; painting to photography; singing to scrabble. There were also lunches, debates, day trips and theatre visits. It was especially encouraging to see such a good attendance at the inaugural meeting of the Mindfulness and Meditation group. This month we’ve yet another new start-up group: Exercise to Music. We’re holding our Spring Coffee Morning on Friday 4 May, from 10.00 in Trinity Church, John Street. It’s an informal gathering of new, old and prospective members - an ideal opportunity to drop by and find out what Porthcawl U3A has to offer. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS Each month, Melanie Lazarus, Director & Solicitor at Melanie Lazarus & Co Solicitors, the only Specialist Family Law Solicitors in Bridgend will answer some of the typical questions put to her by new clients on a relationship breakdown: Q) I have been married to my husband for 20 years. I wish to separate and divorce and have been told that I can divorce my husband on “irreconcilable differences”. Is this correct? A) This is a common misconception. There is only one ground in this country for obtaining a divorce and that is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. There are “5 facts” which may be relied upon to satisfy the Court of this and three rely on separation of at least 2 years and do not involve citing “fault” or “blame”. Generally, the most common “facts” are ones of “fault” namely “adultery” or “unreasonable behaviour” as proceedings can be filed straightaway. “Unreasonable behaviour” is a combination of a subjective test and objective test. What is unreasonable for one person may not be for another but a Judge objectively considering the reasons must conclude that the marriage is over. Statements such as “I don’t love him/ anymore” are not sufficient. “Adultery” must involve sexual intercourse with a person to whom the other spouse is not married and is of the opposite sex and should only be relied upon if there is evidence of adultery for example, a written confession in an email, text. If a client really does not wish to cite “blame” and is unconcerned about starting proceedings straightaway, the parties may wish to wait for 2 years and agree that either husband or wife files for divorce on the fact of a 2-year separation to which the other party will consent. WORKPLACE BULLYING AND HARASSMENT Workplace bullying and harassment can take many forms, some more obvious than others. Examples include: • name calling, sexist remarks, racial slurs, comments about appearance; • offensive office ‘banter’, malicious rumours or controversial humour; • unfair treatment or informal threats of being sacked; • sexual innuendo, advances from a co-worker, or unwanted flirting, including “sexting” or sexual comments made via social media. Harassment is linked to discrimination. It is related to any of the following ‘protected characteristics, Age, sex, disability, race, religion, gender, marriage and civil partnership; Harassing someone from one of these groups is illegal if it violates their dignity, or if it creates a hostile, degrading or offensive environment for them. Bullying is often defined in terms of behaviour that undermines, humiliates, or injures a person. It is not linked to discrimination, so the legal implications are different to harassment. If you feel this is happening to you then raise your concerns with your line manager, union representative or the HR department with evidence to back up your claim if you have it. If the bullying or harassment is affecting your health, visit your doctor. If it is causing you to take time off work sick, ask for a ‘fit note’. Keep a detailed record of every bullying incident and related conversations. Keep any evidence, for example emails from the bully. You should have been given a copy of the company’s written disciplinary and grievance procedure when you started your employment (it may be part of the company handbook) this should set out the internal steps you can take to address a problem at work such as bullying or harassment. If an informal approach does not work, follow the formal grievance procedure set out in your company’s policy. If you are a member of a trade union, talk to the employee representative about your problem. If you have exhausted all other options and the problem is still not resolved, you can discuss the matter with an employment lawyer who may advise legal action. In some circumstances this may lead to a settlement agreement or as a last resort, an employment tribunal. If you resign as a result of bullying or harassment, in certain circumstances you may be able to bring a claim of constructive dismissal against your former employer, based on the fact that the mutual trust and confidence has been broken. But always take legal advice first.

Women’s institutions SOROPTIMISTS SUPPORT TY HAFAN

On Wednesday 28th March President Eurwen presented the sum of £825 to Emma Anthony from Ty Hafan the Children’s Hospice situated in Sully. The hospice opened in 1999 to serve children with life limiting medical conditions and support their families. The hospice is self funding and relies mainly on the generosity of people in Wales and beyond in order to maintain the initiative which provides truly life enhancing care both in the hospice itself and also in the community. Bridgend Soroptimists raised this donation holding various events throughout the year and were humbled by the presentation given to the club by Emma who enthusiastically relayed the work undertaken by the virtual army of dedicated staff and helpers who make this wonderful establishment a joy to behold. PORTHCAWL INNER WHEEL Hello, everyone. I am back but there is so much news. Our GB and NI National Conference took place in Bournemouth in March. The conference was opened by Liz Thomas our Association President. We had great speakers and representatives from the charities we support as an organisation. A collection was taken for Alzheimer’s research UK, and the president’s charity for the year is “Children’s Hospices”. There were far to many speakers to name them all. John Benjamin of Antique Roadshow fame gave us an excellent talk on antique diamonds. Then Helen Sharman, CMG, OBE, explained what it took to be the first Britain in space. She was launched in a Soyuz space craft to spend eight days orbiting the earth on the Mir Space Station in 1991. A talk about the training and work of Medical Detection dogs in our communities by Rtn. Norma Howell was extremely interesting. The International I.W. Conference will have taken place in Melbourne in April, our district chairman Mary EmmentLewis joins thousands of delegates from all over the world. LALESTON WI Our April meeting was attended by 27 members, they were informed of various activities arranged by GFWI. Our W.I. would be visiting Lacock and Bath on 10th July. We are celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year and we would be having a celebratory tea on 21st June and as this coincides with Ladies Day at Ascot members were asked to decorate hats to wear. The May meeting would be the AGM and resolutions and we would be having a Bring and Buy Sale. Luncheon Club is on 17th April at The Grove Golf Club Porthcawl. The speaker for the evening Reverend Clive Williams was then introduced who gave us a very informative and amusing talk on Bach, Mozart and Beethoven he played various pieces of music from these composers, a lovely evening. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS At our A.G.M. the officers remained the same, Chairman Diana Richardson, Vice Chairman Freda Rodger, Treasurer Janet Anderson and Secretary Jean Dorrington and we welcomed Sandra Phillips as President for the next year. Flowers were presented to Ann Barrett on the occasion of her Diamond Wedding. Our 64th Birthday Lunch had been enjoyed at the Grove Restaurant. We welcomed Roger Slennett and Rhys Morgan from Porthcawl First Responders who told us of the organization, which only started here last November. They are trained by the Ambulance Service but rely on donations to cover the cost of equipment and clothing. Roger demonstrated all the equipment from a defibrillator down to small it essential items. In case of heart attacks, strokes and heavy bleeding time is of the essence so we could see what an important service it is. Our meeting this month is on May 9th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when Clive Williams will entertain us with his music and talk. Always popular so do come and join us. All welcome. NEWTON WI In the April meeting members were welcomed by our President Jennifer, who also welcomed Pam a visitor from Mynydd Cynffig WI. Betty Metcalf was congratulated regarding her poem ‘Bodmin Moor’ which was chosen to be read at the G.F.WI. Literary Lunch, held at the Hi Tide. Betty then read out her poem to the ladies at our meeting, and was warmly applauded. An Easter Bonnet Competition was held with members parading their hats to the chorus of ‘In my Easter Bonnet’. The winner was Pat Richards, who was presented with an Easter Egg. The speaker for the evening was Tina Hoskins (Gutteridge Flowers) who is also one of our members. She gave a wonderful flower arranging demonstration, also telling us of her passionate interest in plants and flowers all her life. Tina then organised us into creating a corsage, there was a lot of laughter but everyone had a most enjoyable time. Mynydd Cynffig WI held their monthly meeting at the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill 2pm to 4.30.pm. We had a good turn out of members including two new ladies who have decided to join us. Minutes read out and WI business discussed including our guided walk around Tewkesbury, and our trip to Carmarthen and the botanical gardens. We are all looking forward to entertaining our link members, Sker, Newton, Porthcawl and Cwm Brombil these meetings are what the WI is all about, friends meeting each other from other WIs and enjoying time spent together. Our speaker this month was Don Llewllyn who gave us a talk on ‘Brains behind the Mob’ a man who’s parents came from North Wales who emigrated to America, and who’s son Murray Humphrey was one of the most feared gangster of his day. His talk was riveting and had us enthralled. Our next months meeting is our AGM so no speaker but June should be interesting. The May meeting of Sker WI was held recently and after the minutes had been read it was with much sadness we heard one of our members Anne Lodwig had died. On a brighter note we have a varied programme coming up with the Link Meeting being hosted by Mynydd Cynffig at the Talbot Centre, which should be an enjoyable evening. There is our Birthday Supper at the Hi Tide and also a trip to the Theatre in Swansea and a visit to a visit to a Vineyard to look forward to. The entertainment for the evening was Linda and her group of Belly Dancers The ladies were ornately and colourfully dressed. There is a lot of history involved and has been called belly dancing from the start. It is seen mainly in Eastern countries. The ladies showed us some of the various dances and movements involved. Some members had a try and did very well. The competition for the evening was won by Margaret Owen with Audrey Ellams 2nd and Nora Williams 3rd. The raffle was won by Lauraine and Sarah. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at St. David’s Church Hall, Nottage at 7pm. Anyone wishing to join us will at very welcome. Ann Vipond

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

The gardening year begins to reach a crescendo of activity this month with tender annual plants to harden off, hanging baskets to be made up and weeds appearing in abundance! With lush new growth emerging our reliable adversaries, snails and slugs, seem to view a large number of our favourite plants as a tasty meal. There are a few that they pass by (including Verbena, Geranium and Penstemon) which at least allows us to focus on protecting the plants most at risk. Earlier in the month we held our annual plant sale, which was hard work but also great fun. We enjoy meeting fellow gardeners and having the chance to share our love of gardening. This year we have been delighted to welcome quite a few new members who seem to enjoy our comradery and activities. Who knows we may even see their competitive spirit at our annual autumn show? Since last autumn enthusiastic club members have set about refurbishing one of the borders. It began with the restoration of a very old plough, which is now the centrepiece, cutting back an overgrown area and the introduction of a new planting scheme. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB May Day, May Day, might be a distress call to Mariners, but to gardeners it’s the start of the loveliest month of the year! It’s time to start picking your rhubarb if you are lucky enough to have some, pick when to stems are about 10 inches long, pick from the outside, always leaving about a third, do not harvest in the first year after planting as this reduces vigour. It depends on the species of rhubarb you’ve planted what colour the stems are, it may be ripe even though the stems are still green! Rhubarb contains oxalic acid so short lengths pushed into the ground next to cabbages protects against club root, also if you soak the leaves in rainwater for a few weeks, the liquid is an excellent pest control! Oh the joys of rhubarb! Try tying some black thread around fruit bushes, birds have difficulty focusing on it which makes it hard for them to judge distance so they won’t risk getting snagged up in it (bit mean though). Pinch out the tops of broad beans now and earth up potatoes. Gardening - a leisure time activity - lots of time and little leisure! Chris Early

Health & wellbeing KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE DAY 2018 The Rotary Club of Porthcawl recently organised the annual Stroke Association’s KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE DAY at Trinity Church, Porthcawl. Rotarians, assisted by members of Porthcawl Stroke Club, encouraged people to have a free blood pressure check taken by health professionals, without any need to make an appointment. Mayor of Porthcawl, Cllr. Lorrie Desmond Williams was first in the queue to see Nurse Gill Williams and while Rotary President Sandra Townsend, Madeleine Moon MP and Mayor’s Consort, Don Sutton looked on, they couldn’t resist hamming it up a little! Of course there’s nothing funny about Stroke and that’s why this event is held every year; high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to 50% of all strokes, and of course not everyone with high blood pressure experiences any symptoms. During the day one hundred and sixty seven people took the opportunity to get checked: of this number sixteen were advised to have a routine follow up and six were recommended to make an urgent referral at their local surgery. If only one or two are alerted to possible problems then the Rotary Club of Porthcawl feel it was all worthwhile. Rotarians are very grateful to all the volunteers who worked throughout the day, especially the health professionals who gave their time so willingly. ‘GENEROSITY’ A PERFECTION OF THE HEART Many parents, educators and public organisations use the lived and spoken process of extrinsic reward. We all play a part in it, it is a very powerful motivator and as a method it can organise the collective movement of human behaviour. Much of the early research was conducted by the developmental psychologist - Skinner. Skinner had a huge impact on education, but went a bit mad towards the end of his life! Extrinsic reward as a behaviour tool can be used in many ways, sometimes the outcomes can be disastrous (think gambling, excessive spending, forms of cheating, fraud etc.). The self and our personality that we are trying to continually create, is a fragile sensitive self. Receiving a reward stimulates pleasure and desire. Being rejected by a rewarding system, creates animosity and mistrust. Emotions such as anger and resentment follow. Therefore both systems create a push and pull movement system. Personal Bias ignores the push and pull of the mind. The mind and this heart needs stability, because it is stability that forms the foundation for deep care and the next intention. Buddhist teachings show us how to liberate ourselves from these constructs. Because of the many levels that ‘reward’ exists at, loosening and recognising the bias that the process causes, reduces suffering. Lived generosity is the sacred, our highest human capacity. The Buddha called ‘Generosity’ a perfection of the human heart. This next month notice the dissatisfaction that arises when your not rewarded. Arts & music A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Filming is now well under way on the new Porthcawl documentary film, and it will show viewers how much the town has changed. One section looks at the contrast between pre-war Porthcawl, with relatively few streets and no housing estates, and searches for some of the grand houses of the day. I recently asked, in a Facebook request, if anyone could remember Long Acre, the house which used to stand in isolation at what is now the end of Long Acre Drive, roughly where the houses of Long Acre Court are, and I received responses from several people whose information helped me to piece together its history – it had a stained-glass atrium, which must have been an impressive feature. But like so much else, it has slipped into the past. Some houses, such as West Winds on Locks Common, fortunately still retain much of their original character and give us a visual taste of the town’s earlier days. And the new Porthcawl film will include old home movie footage shot in the summer of 1940 in the front garden of what was then one of Danygraig Avenue’s few houses, complete with a column of soldiers marching past on the concrete road! We are a group of people who ring handbells for fun and are based in Porthcawl. We are trying to get more people interested in this and are looking for anyone of any age or ability to come along to our twice-weekly practice evenings and see if they would like to learn this unique musical form. We regularly get asked to play for different events and organisations and our busiest period is leading up to Christmas when we are in great demand. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK It’s always nice to get calls from promoters who say “I’m putting on a festival and you are the man to talk to!” The music world is so fickle. Past glories are soon forgotten or just ignored, especially on a local level. One of these events is to be held in South Wales so I’ll have more information next month. I’ll also ask Steve Maitland Thomas for the line up for Newton’s Pop and Beer Festival in August. Jay Aston, who hails from Cornelly, popped around recently. He found fame with his band Gene Loves Jezebel in the 80s but still has a large cult following around the world. Jay, now London based, has a recent album out with G.L.J. called Dance Underwater – check it out! Bridgend’s Last Flight To Pluto, featuring Alice Freya, plays the Trinity Prog Fest at London’s Islington Assembly Hall on Saturday 12th May. Headliners are Marillion’s Steve Rothery Band along with Touchstone and Ghost Community. Pluto’s new album is out soon and I attended a recording session – it’s sounding the biz and I’m certain it will put them in the big time. As always, let me have your music news. Preparations are well in hand for our forthcoming summer events. The Choirs highlights include a short tour to Belgium at the end of May, with our Annual Concert in The Grand Pavilion Porthcawl on the 8th September, where we will be joined by The 4 Tunes - four young singers who have had wide success in musical theatre, taking lead roles in the West End. They have come together to sing iconic songs spanning the world of pop, opera, & musical theatre. Two of the quartet are Welsh, Michael Conway hails from Porthcawl, having attended Porthcawl Comprehensive School. He played the role of Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys in the West End. The other Welshman is Aled Williams from the Amman Valley, his roles have included Jesus in Godspell, and Don Carlos in Carmen. Tickets will be available shortly from choir members. The Choir is currently inviting applications for The Dillwyn Evans Memorial Award, from A level music students from Porthcawl intending to further their education in music. The winner was the member with the highest total from their two highest scoring entries and it was extremely close again this year with two members tied in 1st place - Geoff Baker and Richard Craze. So we then had to include their 3rd highest entries to establish the winner but it was still a tie so we then introduced their 4th entry and Geoff Baker won by just two points. Dennis Russ was our judge and as usual his unique humour and personality made it a very entertaining evening. THE NAVIGATORS SAIL INTO PORTHCAWL At 14:00 hrs the 34ft yacht Rival Star will sail into Porthcawl on Day 2 of a round-Britain expedition seeking the early voyages and life stories of Celtic Christianity. Howard Worsley and Andy Carnegie will trace the sea routes, landing places and influences of the early Celtic Christian saints. Howard is a theological college vice principal and Andy a businessman and keen sailor. They will be met by the Sea Cadets and the Town Mayor at the harbourside. A reception will be held in the YMCA at 7pm where the pair will talk about the voyage and hope to gain knowledge of the local Celtic traditions from those attending. There is no entry fee and everyone is welcome. If you would like to attend you will be very welcome. Sport reports TATA STEEL SAILING CLUB

Tata Steel Sailing club held its Annual Dinner and prize-giving event recently at the Fairways Hotel in Porthcawl, and those present enjoyed a very nice meal. Following this the prizes were presented to the worthy winners by our Commodore - Linda Ingram, prior to everyone taking to the dance floor. Our first photo’ shows David Gibson receiving the ‘Ian (Leedsy) Williams’ trophy, which is presented annually to the Sailing Club Overall Champion. The second photo is of Sophie Edwards, one of our Junior members receiving the ‘Brocks Pot for Dames’ trophy. This is one of the clubs earliest trophies dating back to the 1960s when the Club sailed on Port Talbot Docks, and is awarded annually to the top Lady Helm at the club. The period after Christmas has been hugely distributed by very poor weather and many games have been called off, so no articles were published. However, despite this intermittent break, the boys have sustained their good level of performances. We have been working very hard in training on team structure and different ways of attacking spaces. REST BAY NIPPERS NEWS I’m delighted to report that, on the 24 & 25th March, Rest Bay Nippers came 4th in Britain in the SLSGB Nipper Pool Championships held in Cardiff! Over the two days of competition we scored 945 points, won 51 medals and set 9 British records. A fantastic achievement and one all the kids involved should be really proud of.

But, as I said to the kids, it’s not all about the medals and points – it’s about the whole team from the youngest to the oldest, and the team spirit every child showed was superb. Cheering on and supporting their team mates and having loads of fun was as important and a particularly pleasing part of the two days. The atmosphere at the event was fantastic, with local teams hanging out together and cheering each other on. All in all, a really enjoyable two days and great to be part of.

REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB NIPPERS SECTION Now it’s onto the beach, and by the time you read this we will have already started beach training. We train on Rest Bay beach, Porthcawl on a Tuesday 6-7.30pm and Sunday 11am - 1pm. Anyone is welcome to come along and see what we do. There are 6 different age categories and Nippers are aged 7-13 years old.

Rest Bay Nippers has limited spaces available for boys and girls but there are spaces for those born in 2010. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have loads of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.
