PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
We are absolutely delighted to announce the summer term will see the long-awaited return of our school show after a two-year absence. When the curtain came down on Sister Act in January 2020, little did we all know about what was ahead of us! Thankfully, because of the timings, we have only actually missed our 2021 show, and our usual January show this year has been rescheduled towards the end of term, after the pupils’ examinations. We are very excited to announce that ‘Legally Blonde’ will be staged at the Grand Pavilion from 4th – 7th July 2022 and tickets will go on sale on in early May. The Sixth Form Interact Group have been busy at school recently, meeting up with members of the Porthcawl Rotary Club and also running an Easter raffle, which raised £126 for local charities. Many congratulations to Will Morris in 7HS who won an impressive array of chocolate! Congratulations to Cari Wilson on winning the Senior Eisteddfod and to Finty Kehoe for winning the Senior Welsh Chair. We are looking forward to celebrating more of our pupils’ many achievements at a presentation ceremony in school early in the summer term.

Commenting on The Wellbeing Hub, Deputy Head Teacher Rachel Smart said, “Positive mental health is fundamental to young people’s ability to thrive and make the most of the opportunities available to them whilst at school. In conjunction with The Wellbeing Hub, we aim to equip our staff and parents with knowledge, understanding and strategies, so that they can support our pupils.” Since the pandemic, The Wellbeing Hub has seen a rising demand from parents and schools for guidance and training on understanding and meeting the social and emotional needs of young people. The Wellbeing Hub, which includes access for pupils aged 10+, is currently impacting more than 78,000 pupils in over 100 schools across the UK.

The Wellbeing Hub will empower teachers and parents at St Clare’s to support the mental health and wellbeing of our young people. Recent statistics from The Wellbeing Hub reveal an overwhelming 89% of parents say there’s a need for all teachers to be given the skills to support the emotional wellbeing of young people.

BRYNTIRION COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
It’s been a busy few weeks of fundraising here at Bryntirion and a massive thank you goes out to our pupils and families for helping us to support some worthwhile causes! The School Council recently collected £1300 from tutor groups for the British Red Cross to help support the DEC Ukraine Fund. As a school, we have developed a strong link with Velindre Cancer Centre, with Mr Rowe recently being made an Ambassador, and as a result, we have taken part in different fundraising activities to support the charity over the course of the year. In February, we raised £1000 by wearing red to school. Our Year 9 pupils are currently involved in the “Victory for Velindre” Enterprise and Employability Challenge and so far, they have raised a staggering £3500 by working in small teams to develop a business concept for a new product or service. Mr Rowe and Mr Shell will be cycling 390km in 3 days, conquering Majorca’s epic mountain climbs and descents, including the mighty Sa Calobra climbs as part of the Majorca Bike Ride in support of Velindre over the May bank holiday weekend. Good luck to them both!
