LAKESIDE GOLF CLUB DONATION TO RNLI

Dear Editor, Recently I presented, on behalf of Lakeside Golf Club senior section, a cheque for £210 to Porthcawl branch of RNLI. A cheque for the same amount will be presented to Mumbles RNLI branch too. I have been privileged to have been captain of the senior section at Lakeside for the past 12 months, and as Captain have chosen the RNLI Porthcawl and Mumbles as my charity for this year. A truly well deserved charity. At Lakeside we collected £420 this past year. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this fund. We meet every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. New members are always welcome to join us at Lakeside. In the picture is RNLI Porthcawl crew before Sunday morning exercise. Byron Noyes, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL REGENERATION STRATEGY OR WHAT EVER IT’S CALLED THIS YEAR Dear Editor, It appears that the “great debate” on the above has now commenced, even before any applications for development on the Salt Lake/Hillsboro Car Park have been made public. May I, respectfully advise those group or individuals who feel strongly against any planning applications that may be received for the above sites that not wanting something is not a viable planning objection Copies of Planning Guidance for Wales is available from the Welsh Government-at Cardiff, free of charge. The local planning authority can only consider viable objections and must be made to the local authority in writing. Sitting on the park bench complaining or writing to the local newspaper will achieve nothing. Avril Lake, Porthcawl

THE WOOFERENDUM Dear Editor, As an animal lover and especially a dog lover, I was glued to the footage and reporting on the Wooferendum held in central London last Sunday. To see all those dogs and their owners “marching” from Waterloo to Parliament was heartening. May be ordinary people will now take notice about how serious the situation we are in is, when they realise how their pets will be affected by any brexit. Leaving the EU would see a shortfall in skilled vets and veterinary nurses. There would also be rising costs for animal health products and even supplies of medicines could, very quickly, run low. Protesters were also worried about the possible suspension of the EU Pet Passport scheme, which currently allows more than 250,000 animals to travel overseas with their owners. Dogs travelled from all over the country, including Cardiff (and may be some even from Bridgend and Porthcawl?) to protest. There were thousands of dogs of all shapes and sizes. Wooferendum, the campaign, I learnt was founded by someone called Daniel Elkan who said, “If you love dogs, if you think people should have a chance to give their say with a People’s Vote; there is no event in history that is going to match this one.” Looking at all the pictures he was absolutely right. Now that the dogs have had their say it is time for their humans. M.W. Jones Bridgend

SEABANK HOTEL Dear Editor, I wonder if any of your readers can settle a query for me? I have a memory of there being an outdoor pool in what is now the Seabank car park in front of the new flats. I’m not referring to the tidal pool on the rocks, which was filled in many years ago. We used to call that the Billy pool. Does anyone have a photo of the Seabank pool to confirm my recollection? Your views INDONESIAN EARTHQUAKE

Dear Editor, The BBC is no longer reporting from the island of Palu in Indonesia where more than 3,000 people died and 300,000 have lost their homes in the recent earthquake and Tsunami. The earthquake that devastated Lombok, an island near Bali, drew more media attention, as it is an upmarket holiday destination. The people of Palu, itself a beautiful island, are ordinary, simple citizens who need help to rebuild their lives. Thousands of children will need counselling and their schools will need to be rebuilt. My son and his family live in Indonesia. I subscribe to the Jakarta Post as I take an interest in this fast developing country. The attached two photographs will give your readers some idea of the destruction and devastation caused by the fast moving mudslides. With Christmas fast approaching, a donation to the people of Palu would be a wonderful gift. You can ring 0370 60 60 900 or visit DEC.ORG.UK Jan Davies, Porthcawl

MEMORIAL FOR THE 38TH (WELSH) DIVISION Dear Editor, Here is a single image of the Memorial for The 38th (Welsh) Division (38ain Rhaniad Cymreig) at Mametz Wood France. I thought this would be of interest to your readers as this is the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Stan Konkol, Porthcawl

ERASMUS AND BREXIT Dear Editor, As an ex-Brynteg school student now in my third year of a Modern Languages degree at the University of Warwick, I have recently started my year abroad. My time will be split between two great European countries right on our doorstep, first working in Spain and then studying in France. At the time of writing I’m currently in Spain undertaking a work placement at a small editorial firm in Madrid that produces materials for those learning English as a second language. This experience has of course only really been possible thanks to the Erasmus grant. The Erasmus grant is available to all British students and offers financial support that doesn’t need to be repaid, reducing the mountain of student debt inevitably accumulated. Without this grant it’s likely I would not be able to do this; living in a major European capital would not have been viable. It doesn’t bear thinking that if Brexit happens, state school educated pupils from Bridgend may be denied the opportunities I am currently benefitting so greatly from. Erasmus is a great leveller; it does not discriminate. I do not want to see a society in which such experiences in Europe are exclusive; where only the wealthy, privately educated students of our country - those who would not be affected by the removal of this grant, or experience the hit in living standards every report on Brexit illustrates - can take advantage of study abroad. It is about equality of opportunity. During the referendum young people voted overwhelming to remain in the institution that affords them so many opportunities. The fact is that since 2016 1.5m million young people have become eligible to vote and deserve a say on how decisions taken right now will impact their future. After all, it’s young people who will have to live with the results of Brexit for the longest! It is only democratic that the people should say whether, now they know what Brexit looks like, they would like it to happen or not. A People’s Vote, with the option to Remain is the only way to respect the referendum result of 2016, making sure that it represents what people voted for. Rhys Felton, Madrid

BOOK OF THE MONTH Lethal White by Robert Galbraith When Billy, a troubled young man, comes to private eye Cormoran Strike’s office to ask for his help investigating a crime he thinks he witnessed as a child, Strike is left deeply unsettled. While Billy is obviously mentally distressed, and cannot remember many concrete details, there is something sincere about him and his story. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Trying to get to the bottom of Billy’s story, Strike and Robin Ellacott— once his assistant, now a partner in the agency—set off on a twisting trail that leads them through the backstreets of London, into a secretive inner sanctum within Parliament, and to a beautiful but sinister manor house deep in the countryside. And during this labyrinthine investigation, Strike’s own life is far from straightforward: his newfound fame as a private eye means he can no longer operate behind the scenes as he once did. Plus, 16 | seaside news

his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been—Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much trickier than that. Robert Galbraith’s Cormoran Strike series is classic contemporary crime fiction from a master story-teller, rich in plot, characterisation and detail. Galbraith’s debut into crime fiction garnered acclaim amongst critics and crime fans alike. The first three novels The Cuckoo’s Calling (2013), The Silkworm (2014) and Career of Evil (2015) all topped the national and international bestseller lists and have been adapted for television, produced by Brontë Film and Television. The fourth in the series, Lethal White (2018), is now available to borrow from your local Awen library! THE WIRELESS MURDER On 13 July 1910, Inspector Walter Dew of Scotland Yard called at 39 Hilldrop Crescent where, in the cellar, he found the remains of Cora Crippen. Married to Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen (pictured), a doctor of homeopathic medicines, Cora had been poisoned with hyoscine, the only time hyoscine has been used to commit murder. The Crippen’s marriage had been stormy. A would be music hall singer, Cora had indulged in a number of affairs, while Dr Crippen had taken up with his secretary, Ethel Le Neve, a woman twenty-one years his junior. Inspector Dew suspected Dr Crippen of murder, but he couldn’t locate the doctor. Meanwhile, on the SS Montrose, a steamship bound for Canada, the ship’s captain, Henry Kendall, became suspicious of two passengers, John Philo Robinson and his sixteen year old ‘son’; rightly so, because Crippen had shaved off his moustache while Ethel had cut her hair short and donned boy’s clothing. Captain Kendall informed Scotland Yard. In haste, Inspector Dew boarded the SS Laurentic and moments before Dr Crippen and Ethel could disappear into the vast continent of North America, he arrested Crippen, the first man to be captured by wireless telegraphy. Local history THE SHIFTING SANDS ‘The Big Dipper’ in Merthyr Mawr Warren, 200ft in height, lies amongst the remnants of what was once a dune system stretching from the River Ogmore to the Gower. To the east of Porthcawl, Candleston Castle, a fortified manor house originally built in the 12th century by the Normans, has partly survived due to the protection of these dunes and its elevated position. Conversely, Kenfig Castle to the west, built by Robert, Earl of Gloucester, also, 12th century, despite surviving numerous attacks by Welsh princes, finally succumbed to the shifting sands in the 15th century and has, now, all but disappeared. Yet, between these castles the dunes contributed to the development of Porthcawl. Following WW1, the dunes at Trecco Bay began hosting tents and caravans. Tourists being free to select their spot and enjoy their holiday at no expense. By the1950’s, the dunes had been removed and a caravan park established. Finally, in the early 19th century, when the D.L.P.R. built its tramway to the dock, it had to create structures to help build tunnels through the dunes that existed behind Hillsboro Place today. These structures, although overgrown, were still in evidence well into the 20th century. Joe Audsley

PORTHCAWL MUSEUM REPRESENTED IN WASHINGTON DC Wednesday the 28th September 2018, marked the 100th anniversary of the loss with all hands, of the USS Tampa, a US Coastguard Cutter. David Swidenbank, Vice Chairman of Porthcawl Museum took part in a commemorative event at the US Coastguard Headquarters in Washington DC when he was invited to read out some of the names of the 131 lives lost when the Tampa was sunk by German U Boat UB91 in the Bristol Channel. The event was attended by a The Coastguard Colour 22 | seaside news

Party, Admiral Karl Schultz, Commandant of the US Coastguard, Florida Congresswoman, Kathy Castor and Kirstjen Nielsen, Secretary of Homeland Security. David has been researching the link between the US Coastguard and Porthcawl which started on an April day on Rest Bay beach Porthcawl. in 1924 when a 14-year-old John Rixon, whilst walking on the beach, discovered a length of wood. Loosely attached to the wood was a brass plate marked US Coastguard boat number 718. John returned home to show the find to his father, a local coastguard, who passed it on to his Station Officer. The Station Officer delivered the plate to the Customs and Excise Office in Port Talbot, from where it was sent to the American Consulate in Cardiff. Finally, it found its way to the US State Department in Washington DC. A few months later the Custom and Excise Office received a reply from US Vice-Consul James Parks, he wrote. “My Government wishes to express its appreciation of receipt of the brass plate, the plate represents the only known recovered distinguishing part of the US Coastguard Cutter “Tampa “which was sunk in the Bristol Channel on 26th September 1918”. What do we know about the Tampa? When the US entered the Great War, the Tampa was sent to Europe on escort duty. She escorted over 18 convoys between Gibraltar and South Wales, with Milford Haven being her European home port. During this period, she was considered to be the happiest ship in the US forces, in her crew were men from the town of Tampa in Florida and included father and son, brothers and cousins. On the afternoon of 26 September,1918, Tampa parted company with convoy HG-107 and after being ordered to return to Milford Haven. At 1930h that evening, a German U-boat spotted the Tampa. According to the war diary of UB-91, her captain dived and manoeuvred into an attack position, firing one torpedo from a range of about 550 metres. The torpedo exploded under the Tampa and she sank in less than three minutes When the Tampa sank there were no survivors. Those lost included 111 US coastguards, four US Navy sailors, ten Royal Navy sailors and five British civilian dockyard workers who were returning from Gibraltar to new postings in the UK. Total loss of life was 131. This loss was the greatest single casualty incurred by any US Naval unit as a result of known enemy action and, because of it, the Coast Guard suffered the greatest loss, in proportion to is size, of any US armed service in the Great War. The brass Lifeboat plate was presented by the State Department to the US Coastguard Headquarters in Washington DC where it is mounted with an inscription which includes Rest Bay Porthcawl as its finding place. During the event,on behalf of Porthcawl museum David was given a limited-edition replica of the Lifeboat plate by Mrs, Arlyn Danielson, US Coastguard museum curator. In return David presented a Porthcawl town plaque provided by Porthcawl Town Council The Lifeboat plate will be on display in the museum during November when it will form part of the Lottery funded, Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales travelling exhibition titled ‘Commemorating the Forgotten U-boat War around the Welsh Coast 1914-18 David Swidenbank

School reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

We were absolutely delighted by the numbers who attended our recent Open Evening for prospective Year 7 pupils; especially the large proportion of children from outside our catchment area, and the positive response to the event. If you missed it, don’t worry, call 774100 to arrange a visit or get more information from our website on www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. Since then, the transition programme has been full steam ahead. Coinciding with European Day of Languages, the MFL department hosted Porthcawl’s very own Eurovision Concert, ‘Eurosition’! Primary pupils were split into 3 groups, learning songs in Welsh, French and German with complex choreographed routines, competing against each other for the Eurosition title! Congratulations to Wales who won, singing ‘Franz o wlad Awstria’. Thank you to PC Williams who has been into school on numerous occasions already this term to talk to Years 7-11 about online safety and drug awareness and Dr Craig Williams and his volunteers who taught Year 8 CPR on “Re-Start a Heart Day” on October 16th. Years 10 and 11 also enjoyed personal finance sessions from the Principality. We are thrilled to announce that this year our annual school show will be ‘Oliver!’ and will run at the Grand Pavilion from 2326 January 2019. More information about tickets will follow. Congratulations to Ella Matthews 8LT for winning the Quadruple Literacy Artcicle Competition. Andrew Slade Head Teacher

ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL It’s been another busy month at Archbishop! We welcomed Mr. Nick Davies, West End Musical Theatre Director, who generously gave up his time to work with the cast of Mary Poppins, the school’s impending production. Even though rehearsals have only just got underway, Mr. Davies was overwhelmed by the progress the students had already made. Well done to staff and students! Congratulations to ex-pupil Jacob Anthony who received the award of Britain’s Young Farmer, seeing off some stiff competition. This award reflects the endless hours Jacob spent working hard to be the best in his field. We wish Jacob the very best wishes for a bright future. As Head teacher, I was fortunate enough to visit Finland with a group of teachers from other schools in the Central 24 | seaside news

South Consortium. It was fascinating to see how the Finnish education system is approaching curriculum reform and it was really helpful as schools in Wales prepare for implementing Professional Donaldson’s recommendations. This year’s Open Evening was once again a great success. Prospective Year 6 students and their families had the opportunity to visit the school and take part in a number of activities. If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact the school on 01656 815505 or email archmcgrathrc@bridgend.gov.uk Angela Keller Head Teacher

Lessons throughout the school focussed on the 17 Global Goals, which are targeted to be achieved by 2030. A big well done to all of the pupils and staff for their energetic and positive approach to keeping fit and healthy on National Fitness day. On Wednesday 26th September all pupils were given the opportunity to participate in a range of fun activities. Nursery and Reception exercised in Nursery and played fun fitness games. Year 1 and 2 completed a variety of circuits to keep active. Zumba, Just Dance and Super Movers proved an energetic and fun way to start the day for years 3 and 4. Year 5 and 6 were put through their paces with some gruelling circuit activities to challenge even the fittest of learners. N Pryce Head Teacher

School reports NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

PORTHCAWL PRIMARY

It has been a very exciting time in Newton Primary School for the pupils in year 6. As part of our Cornerstones topic ‘Scream Machine’, we visited Brean Sands Theme park in Somerset. We were able to experience a range of thrilling rides and exhilarating rollercoasters! At the end of the Autumn Term topic, we designed and built our own working roller coasters using various construction kits and showcased them to the younger pupils in the school. Parents were also invited to attend to see all the hard work the pupils had put into this topic. We also used iMovie to create big screen marketing adverts for each ride, which were shown live on the projection screens in the school hall. This was the time of the year that our pupil leadership team were selected. After all the applications were submitted, the school council chose the following year 6 pupils: Head Boy – Charlie Ware. Head Girl – Bethan Price. Deputy Head Boy – Daniel Hall. Deputy Head Girl – Eva Dickenson. Head Prefects – Emily Jenkins and Toby Evans. We look forward to our Spring Term topic, ‘Mods and Rockers’, which is based around the life and times of the 1960’s. We will begin the topic with fancy dress themed ‘60’s disco! Henley Jenkins (Year 5/6 teacher)

We have had a great first half term back at Porthcawl Primary. We started with our COOL (Choosing Our Own Learning) Days where all our children are involved in selecting topic ideas for the term ahead. COOL Days are one of the ways in which we ensure learning is engaging, motivating and fun for everyone. Foundation Phase (3 to 7 year olds) went back in time to learn about schools when their Grandparents and Great-Grandparents would have attended. We invited grandparents into classrooms to read their favourite stories, talk to us about the clothing they used to wear to school, explore artefacts from Victorian schools as well as play and make games from when they would have been in school. Our Key Stage 2 children (7–11 yr olds) are studying environmental issues and came up with lots of new ideas under the topic Sustainable Wales. Their COOL day involved a TRASHion show (recycled fashion), creating windmills and balloon-powered antics! The children are now keen to use their new ideas to campaign and make a difference to the world. KS2 will work with Seaquest later this term. We love showing people around, so if you would like to visit, please contact me on 01656 815660. Jo Rowley Head teacher

CYNFFIG NEWS

BRIDGEND COLLEGE CREATIVE ARTS

It’s been a term of appointments with Anwen Sleath and Connor McCarthy being appointed Head Girl and Head Boy respectively. Joe Greenslade and Megan Stephens were appointed Deputy Head boy and girl, and pupils voted in our School Parliament with Todd Murray and Keiran Thomas as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. All School Parliament members experienced a training day to remember with an implementing change session led by Apollo Teaching, a discussion with the Youth Parliament and a talk from Lindsay Harvey Director of Education. Our Year 7 pupils participated in ‘Restart a Heart Day’ aimed at raising cardiac arrest awareness. Thank you to the Welsh ambulance staff that provided pupils with CPR training. Pupils at Cynffig also embraced the Welsh language on Dwirnod Shwmae Sumae day enjoying Brecwast Bingo and a traditional Twmpath. Congratulations to those pupils who entered the writing competition, Stranger Sagas (based on the Netflix series Stranger Things). I am delighted to announce that despite over 11,000 entries nationally, an outstanding 38 Cynffig pupils have been chosen to have their stories published. And finally rehearsals continue as we look forward to our Christmas school show Elf on 18th – 20th December. Please contact the school for further details and tickets. Hannah Castle Head Teacher

It’s that time of year where some of the courses are working on ‘Halloween’ themed projects. The Degree students in Music Production team up annually with the AWEN Trust to create ‘Spooktacular’ in Bryngarw Park. Spooktacular is a guided walk through the dark woods and a story around a campfire. But along the way, the Music students produce a variety of sound design accompanying the actors for the event. As the night draws darker the more intense the sound design and the braver you must be. The RSL Music students are performing the ‘Rockin Halloween Show’, the students are performing Halloween songs including one of my favorite the ‘Ghostbusters’ theme tune. They are performing in the Theatre in College and Heron’s hall. The Production Arts students have created ‘The Angel Cinema’ which is a haunted abandoned cinema. If anyone dares to enter they will experience a wide variety of originally created devices. This event is taking place on Thursday, October 25th for college students. Well done to all the students and staff for creating these exciting performances and hopefully some of you will have the courage to enter these themed shows. WEST PARK PRIMARY

It has been a very busy half term at West Park Primary School and one of the highlights has filled our hearts with Community spirit! Members of our Year 6 Digital Hero Team visited Picton Court to talk to some of the residents about ICT. The pupils asked the residents about their particular interests, hobbies or skills and using the iPads explained how to access related topics online. A number of residents remembered enjoying the Sound of Music and after searching for the soundtracks the children were delighted to join them in a sing along. Another resident explained that he used to work with aeroplanes. Assisted by the pupils he was able to search for footage of aircraft from World War 2 and recall tales of his working days. We are very hopeful that this will become a regular event and would like to thank Picton Court for having us, it was such a lovely experience for the oldest and youngest members of our community to share and an event which brought a smile to many faces. We held a very successful sponsored walk along various parts of the coastal path for our Year 1 to Year 6 pupils, raising an amazing £1500 to help develop our beautiful grounds. Our hook days into our new themes were combined with various visits, for example to Caerphilly Castle to find out about Dungeons and Dragons and to the Gower Heritage park to investigate Celtic Life. Our Early Years Unit will be holding an Open Day for prospective new families on November the 14th so if you have any pre-school children and would like to come along please contact the school on 01656 815510 for more information.

THE BRIDGE ALTERNATIVE PROVISION November is here and my, how quick this term has gone. KS2 have had a busy month, picking apples and making apple cake, clay modelling and a minibeast hunt. All of these exciting things were done in Forest School at Sony Environment Centre, Pencoed. KS2 also take part in the ELSA program using puppets and parrots on a five point scale to regulate their emotions, all very positive. The year 11s all attended the ‘Careers Wales’ event in Cardiff, they had a great time looking at different career paths they could take. Our Macmillan coffee morning ‘afternoon’ was a resounding success, we managed to raise £70 for this worthy cause, thank you to everyone who took part in this event, staff and pupils at Ty Llidiard also raised £60. The KS3 curriculum experience to ‘We the Curious’ in Bristol was successful, we used forensic science methods to determine whether Bigfoot was real or not. KS3 are following this subject up in science by making a database of DNA profiles. Have a good term and remember to stay safe as bonfire night is on its way! Harlie and Dylan KS3

Poets corner DANCE TO HEALTH

Life is for living So what about dancing? Oh dear, nearing ninety, Can this be for me? But yes, I’m made welcome, There are chairs meant for sitting So I’m feeling quite safe here But oh, just wait and see For I’m learning right posture, no lolling or slouching But finding my core and to breath carefully And we’re squidging, like painting And flicking and tapping, but still I am sitting So safely you see. But now, some are up dancing, though I’m watching, quite breathless Though remembering my core and my breathing you see But I’m better at rising and we all are enjoying And soon ‘twill be time for some biscuits and tea. So now we are chatting, new faces remembering For it’s all about friendship and giving a lift. Lay up treasure in heaven, where I know we’ll be dancing So let’s relish the journey, for each day is God’s gift Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl

IMPURRFECT WORLD

Imagine a world without any cats. Plenty of armadillo, plenty of rats. Thousands of monkeys, a million birds a-flying. But you’d never see a tiger and you’d never see a lion. You’d never find a panther slinking through the trees And of a favourite tabby, not even memories. There’d be no E Type Jag, no sightings of a puma, If a leopard had been spotted it would

email us your poem info@seasidenews.co.uk only be a rumour. What good would be a Jerry if he didn’t have a Tom? No memory of Bagpuss and Topcat would be gone. But if you think a catless world wouldn’t be a vice, Just imagine if the planet were overrun with mice! Bob Davies, North Cornelly

Email us your poem info@seaside news.co.uk DREAM BENDER

I like to lie very still. I close my eyes and slow my breath While the blank spaces fill. Tip toeing thoughts slip in and mingle with memories recalled A lucid dream cocktail of memory and emotion. I chase these dreams and try to mould them Away from the chaos of their own direction. Then the rollercoaster is off, assaulting your senses Tastes and odours and half memory and half nonsense. Familiar situations but in the wrong places, Surrounded by family but none with the right faces. This will not do. So I nudge and I prod the dream into submission Until it becomes like my own television Playing a show in my head Where I’ve written the script, the soundtrack and story But subconscious is still directing, albeit very poorly but at least in my dream I’m not dead. And that will do, for now. Gavin Brown, Bridgend

THE POPPY

The field is red, the poppy grows it’s lifting up its head It is a symbol in our land to honour the world war dead, They fought in the air, they fought on land and sea We honour these great men who kept our country free, They rest in peace in marked and unmarked graves Sailors rest in shipwrecks that lies beneath the waves, The eleventh hour the eleventh day our poppy wreaths we lay In this our land, and in countries far away, We lay the wreaths of poppies upon the deep blue sea To honour the shipwrecked comrades, who lay beneath the sea, The monument at Whitehall is red with poppy wreaths Thousand people marching their medals on display, With banners flying proudly to mark remembrance day Brass bands playing loudly as they march along the way, Three services are marching to honour the fallen dead The Air Force planes are flying proudly overhead, Abide with Me is a song we sing Sing it loud let’s hear the voices ring, So wear the poppy proudly for what it symbolise Peace and happiness throughout the word is what the people cries. Local news TOILET CLOSURE WILL HIT TRADE IN PORTHCAWL I am urging Bridgend County Borough Council to think again about plans to close the public toilets in John Street, Porthcawl – especially as it has not yet prepared a toilets strategy as required by Welsh Government. These toilets, situated in an iconic Grade 2 listed building, are much loved not just by local people but also by generations of visitors. BCBC has given the town council what amounts to an ultimatum – take them over on January 1 or they close. This is totally unreasonable because PTC has already set its budget and cannot just conjure up extra funding. Town councillors are to ask BCBC to keep the toilets open until April to see if this extra cost can be added into the precept for the new financial year. PTC has already agreed to take over the toilets at Griffin Park and have also re-opened the public toilets at the Grand Pavilion so they are playing their part.. BCBC makes thousands of pounds a year from Porthcawl’s car parks. Is it too much to expect that some of that money is actually spent in the town to pay for vital facilities? There seems to be no sense of natural justice here. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

MORE ACTIVE TRAVEL SCHEMES ANNOUNCED FOR THE COUNTY BOROUGH More than £1.7m has been awarded by Welsh Government to fund new Active Travel schemes in Bridgend County Borough. The schemes seek to establish an extensive network of safe cycling and walking routes while encouraging residents to leave the car at home when making a short local journey. In Porthcawl, £450,000 will be spent on extending the active travel route along the Eastern Promenade from Coney Beach so it that it continues along New Road through to Newton Primary. New cycle and scooter storage will be installed at the school, and some of the road humps on New Road will be replaced. Improvements will also be made between Newton Primary and Newton village, while elsewhere the off-road route between Broadlands and Newbridge Fields will be extended to offer links with Merthyr Mawr Road, Bridgend Life Centre and Brynteg Comprehensive. When complete, the schemes will enable people to choose healthier, greener ways of getting around the area. On another note, don’t forget that our ‘Shaping Bridgend’s Future’ budget consultation will close on 18 November. Your feedback forms a valuable part of how we will make £30m savings in coming years, so please take part visit www.bridgend.gov.uk/consultation by to find out more. WORK UNDERWAY ON NEW WATERSPORTS CENTRE

Welsh Government and Visit Wales have announced their new Tourism Attractor Destination programme, which is set to establish 13 must-see attractions across Wales. One of the first projects to benefit from this is the all-new watersports centre at Rest Bay, which is receiving more than £1.5m of EU funding. I’m delighted to see that work is already underway. With a building design that incorporates solar technology, a covered area for dog walkers and glazed panels to make the most out of the stunning coastal views, the new centre will welcome visitors to Rest Bay as a new landmark structure, and will offer modern facilities that will capitalise on the appeal of the famous Blue Flag-winning beach. It will feature enhanced café and toilet facilities, a function room, showers, changing cubicles, space for local water sport groups and clubs, a retail kiosk, a new pedestrian crossing to create a safer link to the beach, and more. The project also includes work to refurbish the historic harbour kiosk with facilities for boat users at Porthcawl Marina. The centre offers real potential for making Porthcawl a thriving 21st century coastal resort, and I am looking forward to seeing the centre open its doors. NEW HUBS WILL HELP DEVELOP YOUR CRAFTY TALENTS Would you like to make money from your craft hobby? A new Bridgend Craft Collective has recently been launched to help you do just that. The council’s Reach Rural Development team has been working with the local community to set up a collective of five craft hubs which aim to bring creative people together so that they can learn from each other’s experiences and receive training in business practices, digital marketing and other skills. Crafting has experienced a massive boost in popularity over the last few years, and you only have to look at how many ‘hobby entrepreneurs’ are selling online these days to see this. The new Bridgend Craft Collective is open to seasoned crafters as well as

email us your views info@seasidenews.co.uk complete beginners. Hub members will be given opportunities to display and sell their work at craft fairs, exhibitions, markets, pop-up shops and more. A total of five craft hubs have been set up, based at the following locations: The Caddt Centre in Cornelly, The Ancient Briton in Newton, Garw Valley Leisure Centre, The Community Church in Aberkenfig and the Cwm Ogwr Men’s Shed in Ogmore Vale. PORTHCAWL INDEPENDENT ALLIANCE There are challenging and exciting times ahead for your Independent Alliance led Porthcawl Town Council (PTC). Challenging because of BCBC’s shock announcement to close Griffin Park and John Street public toilets from 2nd January 2019, leaving PTC with just a few weeks to consider the legal and practical implications of taking over a grade II listed building, with a backlog of repairs/renewals. A further announcement has been made that subsidies for the 61 and 803 bus services will cease from March 2019. PTC is working with BCBC to find solutions to maintain these vital services. Exciting because our 10 pledge programme is nearing completion and the launch of our new programme ‘Porthcawl – A Premier Seaside Resort’ – which is all about investing in Porthcawl. Forward-thinking initiatives include: new Esplanade & Promenade summer lighting, a new Town information centre in partnership with local charity Experience Porthcawl.Com and the launch of a 21st century Porthcawl tourism marketing website supported by interactive electronic touchscreen information boards, situated at various locations across Porthcawl, incorporating smartphone accessible apps providing residents and visitors with up-to-date information on what to do, where to eat, what’s going on, etc. Porthcawl Independent Alliance – Let’s take Porthcawl Forward

Local news BRINGING A LITTLE OF THE WEST END TO WELSH POLITICS Courtesy of Wales’ very own rising star Charlotte Vaughan, a little west end magic was sprinkled at the Welsh Assembly last month. After hearing the soprano and actress sing at a local concert, I was delighted to invite Charlotte to perform at the Welsh Assembly. Charlotte has been building up a successful portfolio performing in London and across the UK. Some of the roles she has played to date include Alice in Closer, Fosca in Passion, Sarah Jane Moore in Assassins and Nettie in Carousel. She has also had the opportunity to play the role of Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. During the concert in the Pierhead Building, Charlotte sang a number of songs and talked about her journey from performing in local concerts and her time in Bridgend Youth Theatre through to starring in leading roles at the West End. Some of the songs included ‘Feed the Birds’, ‘Somewhere’, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, ‘Je Veux Vivre’ and ‘Wishing’. Charlotte has a beautiful voice. Her vocal range is incredible. She is certainly an inspiration for young musicians of the future. CARWYN JONES AM AM for Bridgend

PORTHCAWL - DEVELOPING AN ICONIC WATERFRONT DESTINATION

The development of Porthcawl and Rest Bay has taken another step forward after securing EU funding to develop an iconic waterfront location. EU funding of £1.5 million is being invested in the development through the Welsh Government’s Tourism Attractor Destination programme, led by Visit Wales, which aims to create 13 must see destinations across Wales. The development will include a multi-purpose watersports and café/restaurant facility at Rest Bay with a centre for watersports for use by clubs, associations and private sector operators. The funding will also go towards refurbishment of an existing facility at Porthcawl Harbour to provide improved facilities for boat users and an extension of an existing kiosk/refreshment space. There will also be development of a 4km cycle route that will connect the bays in Porthcawl and provide a shared use scheme for cyclists and pedestrians; connecting up the key developments within the destination. Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, Lord Elis Thomas, said: “Our aim through the Tourism Attractor Destination programme is to focus efforts and investment on key projects in each region so we have a real impact on Wales’ profile in this globally competitive market. In order to be a leading coastal destination we need to ensure that we have exemplary facilities and services for residents and visitors. This development will give people compelling reasons to visit the area and will benefit both visitors and locals with improved connections between these exciting developments around Porthcawl.” Councillor Charles Smith, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development and chair of the Bridgend Coastal Partnership, said: “We are delighted to be part of the Tourism Attractor Destination programme and are looking forward to the creation of an all-new iconic visitor attraction in Porthcawl. “Our coastline and beaches have a long history of attracting residents and visitors, and the new centre at Rest Bay will tap into the growing popularity of sea-based sport and leisure activities to create a uniquely-placed watersport destination. “Together with the refurbishment of the marina building and other regeneration projects that are taking place throughout the town, the Tourism Attractor Destination programme is supporting the council’s overall efforts to transform Porthcawl into a thriving 21st century coastal resort.” In total, the Tourism Attractor Destination programme has been approved with £27.7m ERDF towards a total project cost of £61.8m that will see thirteen strategic infrastructure projects realised up to 2021.

Fish, chips and mushy peas were on the menu for this month’s Town Twinning gathering in Beales. Yes, we celebrate British cuisine as well as French. Fun included a swift game of heads or tails, followed by an educational talk on what language English words are derived from. Did you know that the word “sherbet” comes from Turkey, “abacus” comes to us from Latin via Greek and Hebrew and “bungalow “ from Gujarati .It seems the English language is as mixed as the British people. We will be serving a soup, roast lamb dinner with rice pudding for dessert – costing £8.00 to members and £9.00 to non-members. This has become a tradition when members of the public attend the Remembrance Service at the monument in Kenfig Hill, and then come into lunch. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. At the end of the month, on Friday, 30th November at 6pm, Father Christmas will be switching on the Christmas Lights in the village, which is hosted by the Pyle Community Council. He will come to the Centre to sit in this Grotto to speak to all the children who wish to tell him how well behaved they have been this year! VOLUNTEERS RAISE OVER £100,000 FOR NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION TERMINAL ILLNESS CHARITY – PORTHCAWL

The close-knit group of volunteers have campaigned tirelessly since 2011, raising funds by organising various local events, including quiz nights, fashion shows, tribute acts and their forthcoming clairvoyance evening. The group also host bucket collections, coordinate collection tins in the community and organize the annual daffodil appeal and blooming great tea party. The group range from 16 to 75 years old and give up their time to help fundraise to support those living with a terminal illness. All money raised by the group will help Marie Curie provide expert care, guidance and support to families who need the charity’s support. Helen Thomas, Chairperson of the group said “we are thrilled to have reached £100,000 and thank all those who have supported us in the past. The residents of Bridgend and Porthcawl really are generous when giving to Marie Curie and always support the events and activities we organise; we really couldn’t do it without them In terms of care £100,000 will pay for 555 nights of nursing or 79 weeks. If anyone is interested in helping in any way please contact Helen on (07791) 255943 or email bandpmariecurie@gmail. com

600 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during September. We dealt with 5 logged incidents and monitored 6 others, from navigational hazards, to a missing person. We logged and monitored 197 commercial vessels, 369 leisure vessels, 1 military and 30 others. To avoid false alarms, we are now receiving phone calls from climbers at Ogmore and Southerndown advising us of their planned climbs. This will help ensure that they are not mistaken for persons cut off by the tide and prevent unnecessary call outs to the Search & Rescue teams. Thanks to the generosity of ‘SwimSecure’, we have a supply of tow floats, which can be borrowed by open water swimmers on request. We continue to fly our International Code of Signals “RY” flags to warn vessels of the presence of open water swimmers and since their introduction on September 18th, in the first 2 weeks of operation, the flags were hoisted five times. Thanks to the generosity of the Elvis Festival supporters our collection at Mansells Chip Shop raised £360. Thanks to Mansells for their support and for hosting us again. Our annual Quiz Night was enjoyed by many, raising £750. Thanks to The Hi Tide and all who supported us. Nick Weedon, Media Officer, Porthcawl NCI

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES

OUR MYSTERIOUS SUN

Hey folks, here is a snippet from my book Uncaged! I thought you might be interested in. Uncaged can be ordered on ]www.neilchristianharvey.com I had a vision. On the cross, Jesus hung dying. He seemed immense and I felt very small as I gazed up at him. He looked back at me, His eyes full of love. In that moment, I saw agonizingly clearly all the bad stuff in me and I knew that He could see it, too. Deeply ashamed, I thought that Jesus might withdraw his love from me. He didn’t. Instead, His eyes pierced me with love. I felt ashamed that he could love me so much, when my love for Him was so weak. As I hung my head, I felt someone pouring some substance over my head and my whole being. It felt like pure love; I cannot describe it any other way. A famous preacher by the name of Charles Finney, who must have had a similar experience, called it ‘liquid love’. The revelation shook me to the core. I wept as, for a whole hour, Jesus continued to pour out his love upon me... Then, with a last reminder that His love would always be the same, the vision withdrew. I knew I would never be the same again. Neil Harvey

Data from a NASA satellite have revealed that the thermosphere, which is the layer of the upper atmosphere where the Sun’s heat first strikes our planet, is at its coolest since records began. The Sun is currently in the middle of a particularly deep solar minimum and sunspots have been absent for most of this year. The previous minimum in 2008 was also particularly deep. If the trend continues over the coming decades, it might signal a period of cooling such as we saw in Dickensian times when winters were much colder than they have been in recent years. During a previous prolonged solar minimum between 1645 and 1715, the Thames regularly froze over and ice fairs were held each year. The fair would end after the first person fell through the thin ice. Some people will tell you that it is not possible to see the northern lights when the Sun is inactive but this is a complete myth. The lights have been particularly spectacular in recent weeks but you do have to travel as far north as you can if you wish to see them. It’s well worth the effort. Clive Down FRAS

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

IT’S JUST AROUND THE CORNER

Celebrating 10 years of sending out tools to Africa. We have over that time sent out 175 crates of tools containing 7993 beautifully renovated tools. These were allocated kits, we know exactly who they were going too, and what training they have had. We have also sent 47 crates of un-refurbished tools for stock, 323 sewing machines, 53 different kinds of machinery, and 174 kits of Haberdashery, to seven African Countries and supported our Training Partners. We have enabled many young people to lift themselves out of poverty and improve the standard of living for many people through the work they do. Many thanks to all organisations in the Town, to individuals who have supported us, and for all tool donations over the last ten years. Not to mention nearly thirty volunteers who have worked at varying times. Much re-cycling has been done which is a byproduct of our activities, as well as sharing the camaraderie at the workbench. On SUNDAY 2nd DECEMBER the VOLUNTEERS are conducting the UNITED ADVENT SERVICE at TRINITY, PORTHCAWL. This will be light and challenging. Refreshments following. It will be preceded by the blessing of the crib. Time 4.30pm. Big welcome to all. John Hanson Group Coordinator 01656 786367

We welcomed back our minister, Professor Teddy Kalongo from his sabbatical in September. We have enjoyed autumn with a Harvest festival followed by a lunch in the hall and a Harvest themed Messy Church session. The children made pizza and joined in the games, arts and crafts, stories and singing. Our next Messy Church in October has the theme of Darkness and Light. There will be apple bobbing, pumpkin rolling and many more themed activities. The sessions continue every 3rd Sunday between 2 and 4 pm and all are welcome to attend this free activity. It will be held on Sunday 18th in November. Our monthly social events have recently included a pottery making session and an enjoyable trip to the Malvern show. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q) I have been told by my solicitor that my reasons for divorcing my husband on his behaviour are somewhat flimsy and have been warned there is a risk that my husband could contest my Divorce. What should I do? A) This year saw the case of Owens v Owens reported in all the national papers and is an example of a Respondent who successfully defended the grant of the Decree. Mrs Owens aged 68 had wanted a Divorce from her husband of 40 years and in accordance with Law Society Family Law Protocol, her Solicitor had drafted a mild Divorce Petition based on husband’s behaviour. She had taken the step as Mr Owens had refused to file for Divorce on her adultery and he had refused to agree to a Divorce on the fact of a two years’ separation by consent. Mr Owens refused to agree to the Divorce on his behaviour. The trial Judge and Court of Appeal dismissed her petition as it had not met the threshold for the divorce to proceed. Mrs Owens appealed to the Supreme Court who unanimously rejected the appeal meaning that she will remain married until 2020. Mrs Owens had to show that on the balance of probabilities that her husband had behaved in such a way that she could not reasonably be expected to live with him. Mrs Owens had cited reasons of behaviour which had taken place after the parties had separated which was somewhat unusual as they had been married for 40 years Therefore, defending Divorces is rare but care should be taken citing the reasons of behaviour. In 2016, 114,000 petitions for divorce were filed in England and Wales and only 800 answers were filed. In fact, only 17 petitions in that year proceeded to a Final Contested Hearing. PITFALLS FOR OLDER PEOPLE WHO DIVORCE

A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY

The last 25 years has seen a significant increase in the number of over 55’s seeking to divorce. There are many unique financial considerations for those divorcing at that time of life. In divorce proceedings a pension is usually the second largest asset on the table after the family home. An older divorcing couple may both be retired and so one party’s pension income may have to provide for them both. If a pension is shared, both spouses may end up with less than before due to tax considerations. Also, people should be aware that it is not possible to split a state pension, which will affect less affluent couples. Divorce will affect a person’s inheritance tax allowance and so tax planning should be considered. Whereas married couples can pass assets between them tax free and make use of their spouses’ allowance when they die, divorcing couples lose that right and so their heirs’ tax bill will increase. Another issue may arise from the fact that more adult children are living with parents. Soaring house prices and stagnant wage growth has affected the ability of young adults to meet the cost of living, so many return home while they get their careers underway, or they return to the family home after a relationship breakdown. This creates a financial burden upon parents which could be unsustainable post-divorce. The courts do not look at the needs of adult children living with their parents, nor is there a duty to pay adult child maintenance. This often creates pressure on the spouse who continues to take on the responsibility of allowing an adult child to live with them. These factors should be considered when an older couple seeks to divorce, and the appropriate advice should be taken to avoid unnecessary financial strain. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document that lets you (the ‘donor’) appoint one or more people (known as ‘attorneys’) to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf, typically if you are no longer able to do so. Drawing up a lasting power of attorney gives you the opportunity to decide who you would like to do this for you and include any particular wishes or restrictions. If you are asked to act as an attorney, you should think carefully about whether you will be prepared to take on the role and if you decide to take on this role it’s essential to ensure that you fulfil your responsibilities. Drawing up a lasting power of attorney is a sensible way to plan for an uncertain future. Many people choose to do this at the same time as drawing up a will. You can choose to draw up a property and financial affairs LPA (allowing your attorney to make financial decisions for you), a health and welfare LPA, or both. In each case, you have the freedom to choose the attorneys you want (provided they agree to act) and to limit what they can do. With a property and financial affairs lasting power of attorney, you can decide whether it should be operational now (for example, if you want someone to take care of financial affairs while you travel) or only in certain circumstances (eg if you become incapable). A health and welfare LPA can only be used to take decisions for which you lack the mental capacity. Clearly, the choice of your attorney(s) is critical. Willingness, competence and trustworthiness are essential. A lasting power of attorney must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before you can act. You and the donor of the power of attorney should discuss when to do this. Once the LPA has been registered, you can take decisions on the donor’s behalf provided they are within the restrictions of the LPA. You must act in the donor’s best interests and take reasonable care. If necessary, you should consider taking professional advice: for example, to help with investment decisions or identify the most appropriate form of care.

Women’s institutions BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS We met on 26th September for our monthly Supper/ Speaker meeting at the Heronston Hotel. The guest speaker, Katie Davies, on behalf of CALAN DVS gave a most interesting overview of their work currently being undertaken in Bridgend and the South Wales area. CALAN DVS merged with Bridgend Womens’ Aid in 2015, taking on the services and support previously provided by Womens’ Aid. There is a marked increase in the need year on year to help individuals - male and female - experiencing domestic violence. Since the merger they have formulated a working partnership with South Wales Police, Bridgend County Borough Council, CALAN DVS’ Integrated Domestic Abuse Service and other agencies to deliver the best support and help to those in need. The team is based in the Bridgend Civic Offices. Bridgend Soroptimists have been involved in supporting local Womens’ Aid for many years and are delighted to continue to do so with CALAN. President Helen presented Katie with a cheque from the club and thanked her for attending and sharing the evening with members, pledging continued support from the club in whatever way necessary. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS An important date for everyone this month is November 30th 10.30am when we will be holding our Christmas Fayre at Trinity Church Hall. This is in aid of Porthcawl Community First Responders, a recently formed local organisation highlighted in last months Seaside News and always in need of funds to enable it to carry out its essential work. If they can get to a local medical emergency more quickly than an ambulance it could make all the difference in saving a life. We have celebrated Harvest with our usual good tea and entertainment from members. Again on eating, our monthly luncheon was at Francos. Next months meeting is on November 14th 2pm at All Saints Church Hall when we welcome back Debra John telling us about Christmas in her own dramatic style. Do come and try out our friendly group, you will not be disappointed. And don’t forget November 30th! Dorothy Thomas 772157

Deadline date for the December 2018 issue is Thursday 15th November

Business & finance 20 BILLION UNCLAIMED UK PENSION FUNDS WITH £5,000,000 IN PORTHCAWL? The lost pension mountain, as it’s being called, was revealed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) this week. Apparently they’ve calculated that there are up to 1.6Million unclaimed pension pots worth an average value of £13,000. As people change jobs and move home so many times in their career it has become increasingly more difficult for pension providers to reunite people with their pensions. To further compound this pension holders are finding it difficult to locate their respective company’s due to mergers or closures & takeovers etc that it has become a minefield, which almost needs a forensic accountant to locate the funds. Take this example; we had a client with a £50,000 pension pot with Provident Mutual who were taken over by General Accident then the company was dissolved only to reappear with Friends Provident which is now Aviva but were previously called Norwich Union, it took months to find the money and many people would have given up looking. Fortunately the government is stepping up its help to assist with the process of reuniting people with their pensions and there is a website where you can start the process at www.gov.uk/findpension-contact-details. Alternatively you can try The Pension Tracing Service or former employers if they haven’t been taken over and absorbed into other companies and their pension schemes. When you’ve finally traced your funds you will need advice on how to access the money tax efficiently or merge with other pension pots you may have so you can manage the money more cost effectively. It may be a defined benefit scheme or investment related all of which could be a minefield to understand so we invite you to contact us for a free consultation without obligation. If there are 1.6 million untraced pensions in the UK then that makes 80,000 in Wales with 400 of those living in Porthcawl! It could be you! someone returning to the market, to get on the ladder without a deposit. One example is that if Mum and Dad own their own home, preferably without a mortgage themselves, although not necessarily a mandatory requirement, they can use their own home as a security for the children to buy. Another way is that Mum and Dad’s savings could be used just as a security to help their son or daughter to purchase without a deposit, yet without the parents having to part with hard cash. The rationale is simple – if the son or daughter should get into difficulty with the mortgage for whatever reason, then the ‘security’ can be called upon to right matters. In most cases, careful first-time purchasers ‘cut their cloth’ to suit and manage to make their mortgage monthly repayments without difficulty, so it’s now down to trust between the parent and the child and it has to be said that in the vast majority of cases that we have seen here, it really does work very smoothly. So, call us for an informal discussion on how we may be able to help – 01656 782545 / 07768 418308. Appointments are available to suit you, even out of hours and weekends, where possible.

It’s very easy to say that you should save and save as hard as possible and whilst that IS true, sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get there. Also, not all families are in situations where Mum and Dad can simply put their hands on several thousand pounds of ‘spare cash’ to help. Many choose to release cash from their own homes to help the kids and even Grandmothers often chip in with help and we assist many of these. The latest good news is that there are now certain building societies that will offer help where parents, Grandparents and others are prepared to offer ‘security’ to help the first timer or 44 | seaside news

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

Our Club has started the ‘indoor’ tasks of maintenance. This is when we spruce up our building inside with wet weather jobs such as painting and decorating. This month we have a fun evening of a quiz competition and social gathering and this is followed soon after, on Saturday the 17th, with a fund raising coffee morning and craft sale. This event is open to the public and it is an ideal time to stock up on beautifully handmade Christmas greeting cards and gifts as well as joining us for a cuppa and a chat. Winter is just around the corner so it is time to pull out all the frost protection gear for our vulnerable plants. This can be as straight forward as a few layers of fleece or the more elaborate types of purpose made covers. With the risk of very wet weather ahead, simple plastic cloches will protect plants that do not like the ground too wet around their roots. It is also just about the best time to plant Tulip bulbs for a great display next spring. New members are always welcome – find our more at lalestongardenclub.co.uk Joyce Pegg

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB “In November the earth is growing quiet, it is making its bed, a winter bed for flowers and small creatures” - C. Ryland. Sounds cosy doesn’t it? Remove the saucers from your containers to avoid the pots sitting in freezing water which can lead to rot, swathe them up in bubble wrap or hessian if you can as the roots of container plants are more prone to frost than those in the ground! Make time to give your evergreens a haircut before bad weather sets so they are neat and tidy for winter. Plant tulips in pots, they can be planted pot and all, in any part of the garden lacking colour – fab! Before the birds eat them, cut a few stems of holly with berries for Christmas garlands, stand them in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot where our feathered friends can’t get them! (All bushes with berries are female obviously – they’re prettier!) Did you know – Historically its unlucky to cut down holly which is said to ward off evil – holly was encouraged to grow up through hedges to prevent movement of witches who apparently love to run across the top of hedges! Milk may be widely marketed, highly advertised and perennially consumed, but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Lactase persistence is now recognised as a genetic evolutionary adaptation and even the gene that codes for it has been identified. It’s most prevalent in northern Europe, but still only around 25% of the world’s population is lactase persistent. Evolution is all about survival and reproduction – it’s not necessarily about health. Unless you are starving or severely malnourished, there is actually no nutritional requirement to drink milk past infancy — and including significant quantities of cows’ milk or dairy in your diet can be particularly dangerous to your health Milk can increase your fracture risk – according to the Nurses health study dairy consumption may increase your risk of fractures by 50% Milk does not prevent osteoporosis – interestingly countries with the lowest consumption of dairy products and calcium (Africa and Asia) have the lowest rates of osteoporosis and associated fracture risk. Around 32% or less of calcium from cow’s milk is absorbed, as against 40-64% from plant foods but calcium is far from the only player in building strong bones. Arts & music MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR

The choir received really positive feedback following their performance at the Civic Ceremony for the Mayor of BCBC Councillor John McCarthy. The new repertoire certainly is proving popular. The service was held at St Mary’s Church Nolton and it was a real pleasure performing in such a lovely setting. We are now gearing up for our charity concert being held on 10th of November at 7pm in the Welfare Hall Pencoed in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society where we will be joined by Tonyrefail Ladies Choir. After that it is Christmas Concerts all the way with regular concerts at Brocastle Care Home and Rhiwceiliog and a new invite to Heol y Cyw. Our own Christmas Concert is a real coming together of Pencoed with Pencoed Silver Band and Pencoed Primary School Choir joining us. We are also busy putting into practice all of the plans for our ‘Make us Forty’ project. Look out for our poster in the Rhiw Shopping Centre I don’t think you will miss it! If you don’t read music and don’t fancy having an audition then our choir may be the one for you just check us out on our website midglamorganmixedchoir@outlook.com

BRIDGEND MALE CHOIR ANNUAL CONCERT

Bridgend Male Choir spoke across generations of a magnificent, thankfully continuing strong musical tradition at their 58th Annual Concert. The Choir’s programme compelled the audience to lean in and listen, convincing in their delivery, they displayed a melodious and cohesive sound throughout the evening. The varied selection included, ‘Y Darlun’, and ‘Tangnefeddwyr’ with Dr Peter Morgan, 50 | seaside news

orating as a prelude to ‘Tell My Father’. ‘For the Fallen’ was delivered with pathos and a rich, sympathetic unity of purpose Tenor, Robert Lewis, showcased his potential with a light and sparkling lyrical sound with ‘Bugail Aberdyfi’ and then treated the audience to the power of his voice in ‘Che Gelida Manina’. In complete contrast, the young and fresh sound of the pupils of Oldcastle Primary School was a delightful change under the leadership of teacher, Miss Charlotte Ellis. Dr. Alwyn Humphreys MBE added an extra touch of class, smoothing over changes of ‘set’ with bilingual, relevant, witty and entertaining quips and anecdotes. His analysis of the ‘Anatomy’ of the male choir had the audience rolling with laughter. It is a tribute to Ryan Wood and the superlative musicianship of accompanist Stephanie Bailey that they can clearly not just ‘come up with the goods’, but teaches them so effectively too. The full review of the Concert, by Naomi Hitchings, is available on the Choir’s Website. Martin Cadogan mrcadogan@lineone.net

MID GLAMORGAN SAVOYARDS Another year, another great evening ahead for fans of Gilbert and Sullivan. Or even if you’re not a fan, you will find much to enjoy at the performance of “Yeomen of The Guard”, set in The Tower of London. Since 1994 the Savoyards have raised over £65,000 for charity. The real Yeomen of The Guards were a body created by Henry VII in 1485 as a bodyguard for the Monarch. The opera is set in the 16th century and premiered at the Savoy Theatre, London. The plot involves a jester and his partner, a jailer who wants to marry Phoebe who doesn’t want to marry him but eventually does and a prisoner who expects to be beheaded but escapes thanks to Phoebe’s feminine charms. When Sullivan first saw the plot, he wrote in his diary “Pretty story, no topsy-turvy, very human and funny also.” Critics of the time declared the score to be “Sullivan’s finest”. It was a great success. Please come along to support this event, with proceeds going to Kidney Research Wales, Prostate Cymru and Macmillan Cancer Support. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW I am pleased to say that there has been a resurgence in the use of Super 8mm film in recent times, as creative film makers realise the shortcomings of the digital image and opt to return to the analogue version of celluloid. It shows that the “perfection” of digital is far from satisfying for those who wish to make films that truly come to life in the sense of having grain and texture, and at the same time possess an almost indefinable softness that only real film can provide. Old standard 8mm and Super 8mm home movies from the 1950s to the 1970s can still be projected on to a screen and, perhaps just as importantly, may also be transferred on to a modern digital format for convenience of viewing. I am often asked to carry out this service, but please don’t be surprised if you can no longer access your old video tape images, because many of the original camcorder formats of the 1980s and 1990s are now obsolete. Each member entered 4 images taken either on our summer field trips or on camera club practical evenings and was expertly judged by our Chairman Glyn Edmunds. There were a lot of very good entries mixed with some fun ones. The winner was Jane Jarville, winning her very first competition with a lovely image taken in the tennis court at St Clare’s, congratulations Jane. We’re a very friendly camera club with a mix of male & female members and welcome new members of all ages and skill levels; it’s all very informal. So if you have an interest in photography why not come along and join us on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at St Clare’s School, Newton. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk. STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Cardiff’s John Sloman’s back with a great new album, El Dorado. The former Lone Star, Gary Moore and Uriah Heep vocalist, after a couple of almost political acoustic albums, is back to his Rock & Blues roots! El Dorado tells the story of his brother Robert’s experience of moving from Wales to America, getting ill, returning home and spending a year in hospital before dying. The ten songs start with “Going to America” and end with “In a World of Pain”. It’s a sad testament to the event, but John’s emotional and heartfelt vocal delivery makes this a music masterpiece. It will only enhance his illustrious career. Get a copy from his website or from the various online stores. Well, I’ll soon be dusting the Xmas tree down so get tickets early for The Cornelly Xmas Show on Saturday 22nd December at Pyle Legion. Acts include Cornelly Beatles, Wayne (The Legend) Davies, Dean Kinsey and more. Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion hosts Andy Fairweather Low on Saturday 24th November and Roy Wood (Move, ELO, Wizzard) on Friday 30th November. Next month, Sex vocalist Phil Jones will be sharing his plans with us for world domination of the rock scene. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: John Sloman seaside news | 51

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service

is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service Porthcawl, Stormy Down, North Cornelly, South Cornelly, Kenfig, Mawdlam, Margam Village, Pyle, Kenfig Hill, Cefn Cribwr, Pen-y-Fai, Laleston, Broadlands,

Whiterock, Brackla, Coity, Bryntirion & Bridgend town centre and Welsh business owner Phil Powell agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Phil a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COMMEMORATIVE WW1 REMEMBRANCE SERVICE, PYLE

XMAS FAYRE @ NEWTON INSTITUTE, PORTHCAWL

St. James Church Pyle will be holding a Commemorative service to mark 100 years of remembrance of WW1 at 10am. The Church has been fortunate enough to be awarded Tommie silhouettes from the Armed Covenant fund trust. The Armistice and Armed forces communities programme aims to bring communities together to remember and to think about the Armed Forces today. To enhance this a tea and cake reception will be held at 3.00pm at Pyle Church Hall where a nominal charge of £3.00 will be made. The charge enables us to qualify as a community fund raising event, as this was the criteria required for us to be awarded the prestigious silhouettes. Everyone welcome, please come and join us.

Starts at 2pm. Come along and get yourself some lovely Xmas presents at very reasonable prices. There will also be a raffle, tombola, Cake stall and hand made items for sale. Tickets are £1 which include a glass of wine or tea/coffee.

ELLIE - EUROPEAN CHAMPION!

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS

Ellie McCloy has been a member of Rest Bay Lifeguard Club for ten years, since she was seven years old. She has always been a strong competitor, but the last year of her lifeguard career has seen her catapulted to the very top of her sport. Ellie has represented Wales for the last four consecutive years, which is a fantastic achievement, in itself. However this summer, following an exhausting and challenging selection process, Ellie recently made her Team GB debut at the European Championships, held in Ireland. Ellie went into the competition as double Welsh and GB champion in the board and ocean-woman, both extremely demanding and competitive events. Ellie was in a very strong position going into the Euros and all her training paid off as she was crowned European Champion in both the individual board and oceanwoman. Ellie’s performances this summer make her the most successful member of our lifeguard club - what an achievement! Ellie is continuing her hard training as she builds in her preparation for taking on the world’s best, in the home of surflifesaving, Australia. Ellie leaves for Adelaide in the middle of November and we at Rest Bay wish her a safe journey and all the best in the competition. You can follow Ellie’s progress in Adelaide on SLSGB-high performance on Facebook.

The Porthcawl Runners are certainly riding the crest of a wave after another memorable month. The Cardiff half marathon was undoubtedly the highlight with the club descending on the capital in huge numbers with a number of PBs, first-timers and success stories to boot. Among those include Lucy Jones, who raised in excess of £1,500 for Macmillan Cancer Support as she completed her first half marathon – just a year after first taking up running with the Couch to 5k programme. Rachel Hopley, meanwhile, was spurred on by the memory of her aunt as she also raised over £700 for Velindre Cancer Centre. A big cohort then flew out to Mallorca to compete in the popular annual marathon, half and 10k races. There were some good performance again while for Dave Bennett, who appeared in the official promo material for this year, he also had the honour of seeing his face appear on the back of buses all around the famous Balearic Island! This month, the club will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day at Porthcawl parkrun by wearing commemorative buffs, which also coincides with the latest batch of Couch to 5k graduates running their first parkrun. BRIDGEND COUNTY SWIM SQUAD NEWS On the 6th and 7th October, Bridgend County Swim Squad swimmers took to the pool in the annual club championships. In total over 80 swimmers took part. There was some outstanding racing with many swimmers achieving personal best times and others gaining experience and competing for the first time. An amazing weekend was had by all in a great atmosphere and the swimmers showed fantastic team spirit in supporting and cheering for each other. Parents, coaches and helpers are extremely proud of the efforts and hard work of all the swimmers. The positive progress being made is due in no small part to the swim squad’s two new coaches. Matt Williams is the new head coach. Matt is a very experienced swimming coach having previously had great success with City of Cardiff Swim Squad and more recently Hillingdon swimming club in London where he coached swimmers to British National standard. He is supported superbly by Assistant Coach Ben Reid who has coached various squads at City of Cardiff for the past six years. The swimmers at Bridgend County Swim Squad range in age from about 8 years old right up to seniors and there are a range of squads catering for all abilities. If you are interested in joining Bridgend County Swim Squad, please contact bcss-membership@bridgendcounty.co.uk
