HEARTFELT THANKS FROM MACMILLAN

CALLING PORTHCAWL VOLUNTEERS

Dear Editor, This year our World’s Biggest Coffee morning fundraiser entered its 29th year. In community centres, schools and workplaces, thousands of coffee mornings were held across Wales to raise money and help us support people affected by cancer. I would like to offer a huge and heartfelt thanks to every single one of your readers who held or attended a coffee morning – your energy and generosity never ceases to amaze us. Whether it’s specialist cancer nurses, GPs, therapists or advisers, we can only offer the support that people with cancer need thanks to the tireless fundraising efforts of our supporters. Last year Macmillan help over 62,000 people with cancer in Wales. The number of people who need our help is growing, and we want to offer support to everyone who needs it. Please rest assured that every cake, every brew, every penny raised will now go on to help us to achieve this ambition. And please remember, if you need information, support or a chat with Macmillan you can call us free on 0808 808 0000. If you’d like to support Macmillan and do something amazing today, you can also visit macmillan.org.uk/getinvolved. Thank you all so very much. Richard Pugh Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales

Dear Editor, Wales Air Ambulance is actively looking for new volunteers across Porthcawl, Port Talbot, Margam and Bridgend to assist with fundraising and various charitable activities. Each year the helicopter charity attends on average 2,500 missions across Wales. With four aircraft located in South, Mid and North Wales, the helicopters can be anywhere in the country within twenty minutes. The charity relies solely on support from the Welsh public to help raise the £6.5 million required to continue operating the service. Carrying some of them most pioneering medical equipment on board along with Consultant Doctors and Critical Care Practitioners, Wales Air Ambulance really is a flying Emergency Department, offering advanced care to those who need it most. Volunteering for Wales Air Ambulance can be very rewarding with the chance to meet new people, develop skills and genuinely make a difference across local communities. As a volunteer you’ll not only gain valuable experience, but it also looks great on the CV. Anyone inspired to volunteer for Wales Air Ambulance should contact community coordinator Wendy McManus by emailing: wendy.mcmanus@walesairambulance.com or by visiting www.walesairambulance.com Wendy McManus Community Coordinator / Cydlynydd Cymunedol

WHO WROTE THE HYMN?

TICKLED PINK

Dear Editor, In the October issue of Seaside News C. Brown writes that William Williams wrote the hymn “Guide me…”. He did not. W.W. (Pantycelyn) wrote in Welsh. The hymn was written in English by Peter Williams. G D Morris Port Talbot

Dear Editor, My new friend and I did a Tickled Pink collection at Asdas Bridgend on Sunday 6th October. We spoke to lots of lovely people who were going through treatment, others who were in remission, and others who had lost family members to cancer. As a lady in remission, I can’t stress enough that everyone should go to the breast cancer screening when they get given their appointment. Not all breast cancers produce a lump. I went along to the mobile unit, confident that I was fine, what a shock I had when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, with no lump. It is so important to attend your appointment, as this screening is the best way to find ductal invasive cancer. I would also implore ladies to self-examine their breasts at least once a month. We would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all you lovely people for your generous donations. Susan & Pam Porthcawl

Book of the Month – ‘Postscript’ by Cecilia Ahern A heart-warming sequel to Cecelia Ahern’s best selling ‘P.S l Love you’. It’s been seven years since Holly Kennedy’s husband died – six since she read his final letter, urging Holly to find the courage to forge a new life. She’s proud of all the ways in which she has grown and evolved. But when a group inspired by Gerry’s letters, calling themselves the PS, I Love You Club, approaches Holly asking for help, she finds herself drawn back into a world that she worked so hard to leave behind. Reluctantly, Holly begins a relationship with the club, even as their friendship threatens to destroy the peace she believes she has achieved. As each of these people calls upon Holly to help them leave something meaningful behind for their loved ones, Holly will embark on a remarkable journey – one that will challenge her to ask whether embracing the future means betraying the past, and what it means to love someone forever…

DYSLEXIA FRIENDLY CHILDREN’S BOOK Marilyn has written a book that she hopes will help young children who suffer with dyslexia. She has made reading easier by using letters that are clearer to see using a special font with wider spacing and weighted letters. She has introduced pale colour backgrounds as opposed to white and a different colour font of grey instead of black, both of which take aware the glare that can sometimes cause visual stresses for dyslexic children. The book will take the younger reader on a journey of visualisation as each page is turned and another vibrant illustration appears to support the words and tell the story. Marilyn’s book is written in rhyming verse where children are introduced to the Jolly Jangles, a family of twelve teddy bears created using her crochet hook. They each have a personality of their own and special magic powers. Apart from conveying beautiful messages of sharing, being different and yet being friends, the rhymes take children through the different seasons in a very novel and charming way. The Dyslexia Friendly version of ‘Meet the Jolly Jangles’ is out now. You can get your copy from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1798552191

Local history SINKING TIRPITZ

On 12th November1944 in Norway, after many attempts to sink the German Battleship the ‘Tirpitz,’ British Lancaster bombers finally hit their target. Yet involved in one of the previous attempts was Gilbert Clark. Having gained his degree, Gilbert volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm qualifying as an Observer/ Navigator. His first posting in June 1944, was as part of No 8 Torpedo Bombing Reconnaissance Wing, assigned to HMS Formidable aircraft carrier, for the next raid on the Tirpitz; codenamed ‘Operation Mascot.’ Prior to take off, Gilbert noticed a commotion. The pilot on board his Barracuda plane was being asked to climb out and to his surprise, Gilbert watched as Lt Commander Roy BakerFalkner climbed aboard. Apparently, Baker-Falkner’s plane had been slightly damaged and with little time to waste he had chosen Gilbert’s plane. More so, and to Gilbert’s horror, he did not replace Gilbert with his own navigator. Therefore, in his first mission, Gilbert found himself leading the strike of some 92 aircraft on the Tirpitz. However, due to the Tirpitz being surrounded by a smoke screen, the mission failed. Following his discharge Gilbert attended Cardiff Medical School, married Megan Jones and took up the appointment as a GP in Kenfig Hill. Doctor Clark & his family lived in Porthcawl. Ceri Joseph

passengers. After Act 2, the audience was set the task of finding the clues that would identify the murderers with the help and guidance of Inspector Peach of Scotland Yard. The museum volunteers who made up the cast were Ceri Joseph, Paul Joseph, David Swidenbank, Viv Thomas, Richard Newman, Allan Doyle, Loretta Wilford, Ann Morgan and Veronica Rees. Front of house arrangements and judging was organised by Chris Swidenbank, Ann Taylor and Linda Wade. The cast was ably directed by Glenys Davies with Anthony Callahan and Elaine Newman in charge of sound and props. The museum would also like to offer a big thanks to the High Tide for their support. Special mention must go to Richard Newman (the ship’s captain) for his death scene, which was followed by an outburst of spontaneous applause from the audience. Judging by the response of all those who attended, the event was a resounding success, and such was the demand for tickets that the museum is considering a further performance to be held sometime in the future – watch this space. Oh, and the murderers were? David Swidenbank Porthcawl Museum

BRIDGEND & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY The second meeting of the Society’s 67th season took place on October 9th at when a packed Carnegie House heard Andrew Shell talk on the current progress of work at St John’s House, Newcastle Hill. There has been much argument over the years as to whether or not St John’s, built about 1511, was a mediaeval hospice intended to cater for pilgrims passing on their way to St David’s in the years running up to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries. In an engaging and erudite talk, Andrew addressed the issue head on and examined the design and function of hospices at that time; the various types of private dwellings built during that period and the complete lack of any available written evidence to provide any firm conclusion. He finished by encouraging those present to visit the house for themselves in order to form their own opinion. The session concluded with tea, biscuits and a continuation of the discussion. The next meeting is at 7pm on November 13th in Carnegie House where the history is much more recent. Rob and Ann Taylor will be talking about the Dambusters’ connection in Wales. Chocks away!

FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY NEWS

Last week, a group of Museum volunteers performed a murder mystery play to a packed audience at the High Tide. All proceeds raised were in aid of the museum’s funds. The play, over three acts, was set aboard the fictional liner, The SS Brogden, on the last leg of its journey from New York to Porthcawl. It was 1912, just 3 months after the sinking of the Titanic and there was trouble brewing at sea as Captain Edward Pearson became increasingly unpopular amongst the crew and 22 | seaside news

School reports PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

Our recent Open Evening for prospective Year 7 pupils was a great success; notably the large proportion of children from outside our catchment area, and the positive response to the event. If you missed it, don’t worry, call 774100 to arrange a visit or get more information from our website on www.porthcawlschool.co.uk. Already this term the Transition programme has been full steam ahead with Year 6 Science pupils enjoying a busy morning carrying out 4 experiments, in order to solve the puzzle of who had kidnapped me! Coinciding with European Day of Languages, the MFL department hosted 150 primary pupils for Porthcawl’s very own Eurovision Concert, ‘Eurosition’! Pupils were split into 3 groups, learning songs in Welsh, French and German with complex choreographed routines, competing against each other for the Eurosition title! Congratulations to Germany who won, singing ‘Baby Hai’. Again Porthcawl Comprehensive took part in World Restart a Heart Day on 16th October. Thank you to Mary Emms and other volunteers from the emergency services who taught Year 8 CPR all day – it was a successful day and their expert experience is hugely appreciated. We are thrilled to announce that this year our annual school show will be ‘Sister Act’ and will run at the Grand Pavilion from 22nd - 25th January 2020. More information about tickets will follow. YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR

We’ve started a new venture with Bridgend Credit Union’s School Savings Club this term. So far over a quarter of our pupils have signed up & our year 6 MAT pupils are doing fantastic work as cashiers and administrators whilst learning valuable life skills. Roald Dahl day was a great success again this year. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed a variety of activities & watching the original ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ film. With avid followers of the Rugby World Cup at school, our sports activities are gaining momentum! We’ve now played several rugby and netball matches and tournaments & look forward to future matches with our neighbouring schools. Our Criw Cymraeg and Digital Leaders have made fantastic presentations to governors and are preparing for meetings with their peers in Afon y Felin and Corneli Primary during the next few weeks. Finally we would like to say a huge thank you to Merched y Wawr Porthcawl on accompanying some of our pupils on a litter pick around the school. The children had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed chatting with the ladies. Diolch!

NOTTAGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

As part of our work towards the new Curriculum for Wales at Nottage Primary, from September 2019 we are delighted to be building upon our excellent Forest Schools in the Foundation Phase, to develop outdoor learning in Years 3 to 6 and utilise our fantastic grounds. Mr O’Neill, our STEM leader, is leading our Outdoor Learning lessons, which have already involved: Edible and Deadible lessons, blackberry picking, crumble making, shelter making and much more. We have also included Outdoor Survival in our Enrichment afternoon, where children of mixed ages have been enjoying fire building and tasting marshmallows on the small camp fire. The children have been thoroughly engaged in the lessons with exemplar behaviour, whilst developing life skills.

School reports NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

ST CLARE’S, PORTHCAWL

It has been a very exciting time in Newton Primary School for the pupils in year 6. As part of our Cornerstones topic ‘Flow’, we began with water based games on the beach and then we visited six different locations along the river Ogmore in a ‘Source to Mouth’ trip, to collect different data and record observations using the Seesaw app. We also continued to lead our own learning as pupils chose to conduct a science experiment at Wilderness Lake to investigate which type of stone skims the best! At the end of the Autumn Term topic, all three classes created an artistic interpretation of a rivers journey through the mediums of dance and music. We used the backing track to Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Someone you loved’ to create our own lyrics to complement the dance and showcased them to the younger pupils in the school. We also included percussion and instruments to add texture and dynamics to the performance. The final piece was fantastic and we have shared our work with our parents on Class Dojo. We also look forward to our Spring Term topic, ‘Blitz’, which is based around the life and times of World War 2. We will begin the topic with mystery trip to a top-secret location! Henley Jenkins (Year 5/6 teacher)

Our school follows the English curriculum for GCSE, which means pupils sit the reformed GCSE in all subjects apart from Further Maths. The new Grade 9 is the equivalent of A** denoting exceptional performance. The examinations are challenging and designed to match standards in the strongest performing education systems elsewhere in the world. The reformed GCSEs are more exacting and the examinations are sat at the end of Year 11 with very little or no course work and rely on the performance of the pupil on the day. Although university might seems a long way off when choosing GCSEs, choices at this stage can directly impact on options when it comes to A-Levels and in turn when applying to university. St Clare’s pupils learn Spanish from the age of three in Nursery and French from Year 7. Sciences are also taught as individual subjects from Year 7 so it’s easier to make the right choice when choosing your GCSE options in Year 9. Save up to 50% off school fees with a Senior Sport or Academic Scholarship for entry to Year 7, Year 10 or Year 12 next September. PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL At Porthcawl Primary School, we want our children to be inspired by exciting learning experiences. Pupil and parent questionnaires revealed that our older children wanted more trips to extend their learning. This month our year 6 pupils had an amazing two-day trip to the Sony factory in Pencoed. Day one involved working with the ‘It’s my Shout’ team to produce a short film. Our pupils wrote the script and acted but also got to produce, film, edit and be part of the sound and wardrobe department. It was fascinating to learn all about what goes on behind the camera. Their film involved space travellers visiting different planets including Planet Porthcawl who had Elvis as one of its residents! On day two they got to go on a factory tour and then spend the day coding. They used Raspberry Pi’s to make traffic lights flash and write their own music. It was an incredible experience and they all came back to school as computer experts! We are very proud of our small community based school. We have small classes, a nurturing approach and very high standards (we have been a Welsh Government Green Category school for the last four years). We have a few Nursery places left. If you would like to visit, please ring the number below to make an appointment. Jo Rowley – Head Teacher Tel: 01656 815660

School reports CYNFFIG NEWS # HELLO YELLOW

This month we enjoyed a fantastic day celebrating all things yellow for World Mental Health Day. Staff and pupils donned their best yellow dress and splashed their desks with yellow to raise awareness for young people’s mental health. Together we raised vital funds for ‘Young Minds’ and showed our Cynffig community that supporting positive mental health is everyone’s responsibility. You are never alone. Also this month pupils enjoyed the opportunity to play with fellow musicians from the borough at Brynteg School. Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience of playing with such a large ensemble as well as the BBC national orchestra of Wales and students from the Royal Welsh College of music and drama. Diwrnod Schmae gave everyone the opportunity to speak a little more Welsh. Pupils enjoyed Breakfast Bingo, Mr Urdd Activities and their favourite word competitions. A big thank you to Simon Khalil and Nia from our Business Partners CGI who also spoke to pupils on the importance of Welsh in the workplace.

PIL PRIMARY SCHOOL - OUT & ABOUT

Year 4 and 5 visited Porthcawl to work with Sea Quest. Pupils engaged in a number of fun activities which focused on learning all about the effect that plastic pollution has upon the wildlife living in our oceans. This was then followed up with an 28 | seaside news

afternoon litter pick. Thank you to Sea Quest for helping us be ethically informed citizens! Year 1 and 2 visited Caerphilly Mountain Ranch. As part of the topics ‘Fire Fire!’ and ‘Happiness’, the children took part in an outdoor story telling workshop, led by Little Red Riding Hood, then toasted marshmallows around a campfire! Despite the wet weather, the children thoroughly enjoyed exploring ’Enchanted Forest’ and ’Fairy Woods’ - they even ate lunch in a giant tepee! All had a great experience and the children’s behaviour was exemplary! N Pryce, Head Teacher

Local news WHAT HAPPENED TO DEMOCRACY? I have just submitted a series of questions to Bridgend County Borough Council about the membership of the Porthcawl Regeneration Board. I was shocked to hear that not one of the elected councillors from Porthcawl on either the borough or town council has been invited to sit on a committee whose decisions will have profound implications for everyone living in the town for years to come. After the shambles that has characterised the town’s much vaunted and long awaited regeneration scheme, I would have thought that the council would have learnt its lesson and not only consulted local people but ensured that they had a voice in the process. I have now asked the council to list all the members of this committee. It is claimed that they are all Labour members. We shall see. The regeneration scheme has already been delayed by 15 years or more so it is crucial that whatever is decided now is right for the town and is something that its residents actually want and will support. We have had enough of top-down decisions being imposed on people by a council that seems unwilling not only to listen but also to learn from its previous errors. SUZY DAVIES AM Welsh Conservative Party www.suzydavies.com

MINISTER OPENS £3M NEW SEA DEFENCES The project to install new sea defences which are protecting more than 260 Porthcawl properties and businesses from flooding came to an official end recently when they were ‘opened’ by Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths. This was an extremely difficult project to deliver amid challenging marine conditions, but the results speak for themselves and the new design for the town beach looks fantastic. They have really stood up to the recent autumn weather, and it has been fascinating to see how each of the 185 new terraces work to divert the force of each incoming wave to either side instead of allowing the tide to hit the seafront area head-on. As part of the work, we have also installed a flat, sandcoloured surface with improved access and drainage, and have strengthened the lower promenade sea wall, too. Welsh Government contributed £2.3m towards the overall cost of the project, with Bridgend County Borough Council making up the remaining £700,000. I hope you will agree that the new sea defences have provided Porthcawl with another iconic landmark development, one that is set to provide the town with effective protection from flooding and coastal erosion for many years to come. £1.5M NEW WATERSPORTS CENTRE MAKES A BIG SPLASH Thanks to funding from Welsh Government and the EU, we’ve officially opened the Rest Bay Watersports Centre as part of a Visit Wales initiative to create 13 new visitor destinations across Wales. Designed to appeal to watersport enthusiasts throughout South Wales and beyond, the new two-storey centre is providing enhanced visitor facilities as well as a purpose-built base for Porthcawl Surf School, Rest Bay Bike Hire, Welsh Coast Surf Club and the Beach Academy. The café/bistro and a few other bits were still being set up when I visited, but it will feature a refreshments kiosk, new toilets, external showers, all-weather bicycle storage, accessible beach wheelchairs and more, Porthcawl Surf School will have access to secure equipment lockers, changing cubicles and showers as they offer year-round surfing and paddle board lessons, surf hire, lifeguard and surf instructor training and more. Rest Bay Bike Hire will make bicycles ranging from ‘fat bikes’ to California-style cruisers available to encourage visitors to take advantage of Porthcawl’s cycle network, and the Beach Academy will specialise in environmental education, outdoor learning, ocean literacy activities and beach cleaning events. This is going to be a brilliant new addition to Porthcawl, which will benefit residents and visitors alike. NEW CHAPTER FOR THE HARLEQUIN One of Porthcawl’s most iconic buildings is receiving a fresh new look in time for its 100th birthday. Regeneration work is underway at the Harlequin Building in Dock Street to replace the walls and roof, fit new windows and doors and carry out a full internal refurbishment. With contractors hard at work, the £143,000 project is being funded by the Porthcawl Townscape Heritage Initiative and Bridgend County Borough Council. The Harlequin will be brought back into use in early 2020 with a commercial occupier as the latest piece of Porthcawl’s regeneration jigsaw falls into place. Built in 1920 by Sir Thomas Jones, the building was originally used by an estate agent before becoming the property of Great Western Railway and serving as the Porthcawl Railway station master’s office, and later as the station’s goods office. It went on to host a range of businesses such as a well-known gown and suit shop called Madge, and most recently the Harlequin antiques shop, which gave its name to the building. As a popular and much-loved landmark building, the Harlequin will be a prime spot for a suitable business when the next phase of our regeneration scheme focuses upon the Salt Lake area. RNIB CYMRU VISIBLY BETTER AWARD FOR GLANOGWR HOUSE

TACKLING THE ROOTS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

I was delighted to congratulate Hafod Housing last month for achieving the RNIB Cymru Visibly Better Platinum Award (the highest level of accreditation) for Glanogwr House in Bridgend. Glanogwr House is a retirement scheme for people over 55, which consists of 34 one-bedroom self-contained flats. During my visit there, it was lovely to chat to staff to hear about what improvements have been made and to talk to some of the tenants to hear more about how these improvements have made a real difference to their quality of life. Indeed, sometimes just simple changes can make a huge impact and make life easier for tenants with sight loss. Some of the improvements that have been made to ensure that Glanogwr House is fully accessible to those people with sight loss include new automated lighting, updated signage and contrasting colours on the walls so that objects and features are prominent. There have also been changes to the outside space to ensure that tenants can live life to the full. There is a sensory garden with a mixture of plants and herbs together with warm to touch handrails so tenants can move around and enjoy the garden safely.

One of the positives that arose from the ruling that ended the prorogation of Parliament in September was the return of the Domestic Violence Bill to the chamber for its second reading. There are an estimated 4.9 million female and 2.2 million male victims of domestic abuse across the UK. Levels of domestic abuse have generally declined over the last decade, but an estimated 33,000 reported incidents were still made to South Wales Police in the last recorded annual statistics. Along with my colleagues from across the political spectrum, I shared some of my experiences from my former career in child protection in Bridgend. I saw victims of domestic violence who were undermined, criticised and isolated by partners until they believed the abuse they suffered was deserved. While awareness of domestic abuse has increased, including the impact it has physically, psychologically, and financially; there is still much we need to do to ensure both victims and abusers understand what is happening in their relationship. This new Bill will focus on strengthening the law around domestic abuse. However, it is the whole of society’s responsibility to recognise the signs and provide help, so abuse does not escalate, and victims know support is at hand.

Poets corner MY HOME TOWN Porthcawl born I am see, lived here all my life daughter, sister, mother, gu (not forgetting wife)! Wouldn’t change a thing about it (except The Beeching Axe which really for this area was incorrect and lax). It is a town of two halves and many will attest the side of the gates where they were born is definitely the best. Notwithstanding, it’s so friendly, a simple walk down John Street can take one many hours all the friends you meet and greet. Outside – we have the sand and sea beautiful green spaces. Trafalgar Wood, The Wilderness, the fair, parks, other places. Inside – we’ve lovely restaurants, pubs and bars galore! The pavilion to see a show, Encore! Encore! Encore! Others think their village, city, town’s a cut above And that is great but my heart’s here – it’s Porthcawl that I love! Sian Jones, Porthcawl

A ZIMMER A zimmer for me? I’m as fit as a flea But the years have slipped gently by First a stick, then a walker are helps on the way Till now yes – it’s a zimmer for me Zimmer – bad leg- good leg- I’m off And maybe it won’t be long I’ll be fit and busy and healthy again And my life still be filled with song For he who gives us each new day Has promised us strength for each hour So we’ll fear not the future, but like the eagle abroad Learn to rise up and fly by God’s power. RUN THROUGH THE SEASONS Run through the Seasons now with me, And find that thread of empathy, That binds us all through Earth’s decree, And flows toward Infinity. Much needed in uncertain times Are friendship and poetic chimes An antidote to cynic’s plea, Fight fear with camaraderie. The beauty of the flowering Spring-forth now with Wordsworth’s offering“And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils”. Resplendent beauty Summer shine, These fields of Margam now are mine. To share with comrades on the quest, Offer to her our personal best. The rutting of the Fallow Deer, Announces Autumn-time is here. Shedding our worries - running frees, Leaving deciduous these trees. Now energy for Winter store, To coldly, boldly run once more. ‘Tis only now we know this place, Full circuit of our Human Race. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl Runners

I am still watching over you, I still see you every day, I feel your pain at my passing, It hurts to see you this way, It’s not like I’ve gone too far, I’m with you wherever you go, But I know you cannot see me, So I would like for you to know, I’m in the air that you breathe, I’m with you whenever you eat, I put the thoughts into your head, And I help to guide your feet, So no need for you to grieve me, I’ve not really gone away, I’m always watching over you, And I’m with you every day. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

GHOSTLY MEMORIES Memories of hate, memories of hell, Was it on purpose? I never could tell. Those years of fear and unfaithful love, The odour of sin which lingered above. I remembered her face as she walked through that door, A look of hate is what I saw. Her eyes showed meanness, it was plain to see, I did not love her, she did not love me. My hand came down with the blade of the knife, I realised then I had ended her life. I buried her body amongst the roots of the trees, Today I am haunted by those ghostly memories. Lee-Anne Day

REVEMBER

Today is my first day of waking without you you left without a word When you left you took no possessions only the parts of me you had given me. No sign of you or of what was between us. You came into my room while I was sleeping and stayed. You bought nothing with you only yourself. You talked into the night You told me the story of your life Your life was so far away Your world of warmth and love and touch Your rivers and lakes and skies, you gave them to me. You came silently like an unfolding dawn and when you left it was under the cover of darkness. Tomorrow I will wake again without you Malcolm Price, Porthcawl

(The heart of a two-year-old) 1. I could not go to battle, There’s not much I could do. They wouldn’t let me join up ’Cos I was only two. 2. I would have fought them in the cradle, And fought them in my cot, I’d have fought them with my rattle, I’d have fought the blooming lot. 3. So I could not go off to war, I had to stay inside. But when I think of those who did My heart just swells with pride. 4. What selfless courage they displayed, In muddy habitat, And of such things nations are made, Let’s all remember that. 5. And I remember craters Made by the bombs that dived; The school that took a direct hit, Yet everyone survived. 6. And I remember shopping In queues that never ceased, And I remember rationing; But so few were obese. 7. I remember at one workplace Where I was sent to be, Some keen construction workers Unearthed a UXB. 8. The Bomb Squad came and sorted An explosion loud and neat. I still have the piece of shrapnel That landed at my feet. 9. In times of senseless violence Let our hearts swell with pride Remembering the heroes Who fought and bled and died. 10. So as the years go flying past And memories fade and dim. In the evening and the morning, I will remember them. Bob Davies, North Cornelly

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER

(For Steve, Billy ‘Brush’ Lewis and Martin ‘The Legend’ Griffiths.) My knees have gone, I can’t go on. This might be my last season. But you suggest I’m past my best, That’s tantamount to treason. The knee supports Give hope of sorts, Of one more season’s glory. ‘And then that’s it, I’m going to quit.’ Now where’ve you heard that story?

When the lord thinks you have done enough, And completed your own quests, He will recall you back to heaven, To allow your body to rest. We all have our own tasks to complete, And those challenge points to earn, It gives us education, To allow our souls to learn. We will all have good and bad times, Whilst we live here down on earth, The decisions you make daily, Only you will know it’s true worth. Throughout your life you will cross paths, And teach others true worth, You will gain friends and enemies, As you learn lessons here on earth. Having a religion may help you understand, The faith in you and others, But it’s personal choice which road you take, Which in turn may change what you discover. Believe in yourself whilst you are here, And make the best of what you can, Because when that fateful day arrives, The decision may be taken from your hands. Club features NEWS FROM THE TALBOT Eleven years ago I accepted a challenge from the Talbot CC committee to take on the task of managing the Talbot. This has been a successful project to date, and hopefully will continue to be so for many years to come. However, I now wish to retire from this post, and we are looking for someone to take over the role of Centre Manager. If you think you would like to take on the responsibility, then please give me a call, and we can talk further. It has been very rewarding to see members of the community attend the only stand-alone community centre in Kenfig Hill and surrounding villages, visit the Talbot for lunch, and the many classes and projects we hold. Contrary to local belief, we are not owned by Bridgend Borough Council nor any religious establishment. I, with the support of our many members, have kept this project afloat for the past eleven years. With your help, it will survive another eleven years! Our motto: Owned by the Community - Used by the Community. For more information contact Cheryl on 01656 749754, email: talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website: www.talbotcc.co.uk Cheryl Butcher

TRINITY CHURCH Autumn started with our Elvis service, which was led by Wyn Roberts with CJ Horton and Brightside choir from Cartrefi Cymru. This organisation, which supports people with learning difficulties, was due to sing outside but delighted our church by performing for us instead. Messy Church has a pumpkin theme for Halloween and the November session is on 17th November. A Christmas party will be held on 15th December. Messy Church is held from 3-5pm with activities including painting, arts &crafts, games, stories, songs and a meal. This is a free activity, which runs monthly. On Saturday November 23rd we will be holding our Church Bazaar and on December 15th we have Breakfast with Santa at 9am. This will be followed by a special service when our music group will sing the Christmas musical “King Forever” Our Gap group enjoyed a skittles evening at Moulton last month and church members have been raising money for Action for Children and Alzheimer’s Society with sponsored cycle rides, cooking and a memory walk. Full details of all our events and services are on our website and Facebook page. We are delighted to welcome visitors and new members to our church. There is a chance to chat after the service when coffee is served. Alison Meredith Thomas www.trinitychurchporthcawl.org

ST JOHN’S CHURCH SUMMER FAYRE CHANGES AFOOT! A cheque for £10202.39 was presented to the Rector on behalf of the Summer Fayre committee at a ceremony in the Schoolroom on the 26th of September. On the same evening Jill White stepped down as secretary and Andrew Singer stepped down as chairman. Jonathan and Karen Lewis ‘volunteered’ to be chairman and secretary respectively and their offer was accepted! The date of the 2020 Fayre was set for Saturday July 4th. The Rector thanked everyone for their hard work in providing such a good community event and for the money raised for the parish. The photograph shows Andrew Singer handing over the chair to Jonathan Lewis.

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY We are a friendly group of about 35 members who meet on alternate Wednesday evenings at Awel Y Mor Community Centre from 7pm. We have regular social events and club outings as well as tuition in flower arranging and monthly displays by trained demonstrators. Last month we had a leaf manipulation workshop where we learned how to make flowers by plaiting leaves. It was much harder than it looked! We also had a beautiful floral arrangement demonstration by Linda Garett. We have 2 Practice evenings before Christmas to perfect our techniques as well as our Open evening in the Pavilion on November 6th. We have been invited to create a Christmas tree display for the Community Christmas Tree Festival at Margam park, which will be held from 16th to 24th November. We are also looking forward to our Area Day in Brecon. We have a bus trip taking members where we will enjoy a day out and a display by National Demonstrator Tom Hodge. We welcome visitors and new members and no previous experience of flower arranging is necessary. Further information and details are available on our Facebook page or telephone 07581 048448. TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

We have just completed four crates of tools ready for shipment, over 200 tools in total. These consist of three carpentry kits, one building kit and one automotive kit. We are short of some tools, if you have any of the following we would be very grateful – shovels, pick axes, spirit levels, saw files (triangular), carpenters’ rasps and large carpenters’ vices. We are extremely grateful for all the tools that you have donated. A simple kit of tools has a profound effect; this is only possible with the tools you donate. If you have redundant tools of any kind please phone John on 01656786367. We sometimes have time for tea. We use materials for refurbishing and cleaning tools such as emery cloth (rolls and sheets) sandpaper, machine oil and linseed oil. If you have any you no longer require we can use them in the workshop. We would like to invite all those interested in our work to our Annual Presentation by staff from our head office on Tuesday 5th November at 2.00 p.m. at the Tabernacle in Fenton Place. There will be refreshments and a visit to the workshop across the road. David Cook Workshop manager

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH In the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), we hear a story in which two servants were given a lot of money by their master and congratulated for investing it wisely. The master also gave a third servant a lot of money, but not as much as the other two, and so he chose to bury it for safekeeping, something that angered his master. One talent equalled a lifetime of earnings! So in essence there wasn’t much difference between getting 5,000, 2,000, or 1000 talents. The moral of the parable is that we should be investing our hearts and souls in what’s right at hand. However, as with the third servant, our ideas of ‘big’ and ‘little’ can distort both what we do and what needs doing. A woman at a friend of mine’s church, when asked to help with coffee hour one Sunday, said, “I’d rather do something really important.” However, if one can’t be faithful in the small things, can they be trusted to be faithful in bigger matters? We’re meant to appreciate much more what we can already do. It’s not as little as it seems! God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Nottage Chapel

MAKE KENFIG HILL GUIDE DOG FRIENDLY BUDDY the Labrador has taken the lead in a campaign to make Kenfig Hill guide dog friendly. Three-year-old Buddy and his owner, Faith O’Sullivan, visited shops and businesses in the village, handing out leaflets with advice on helping customers with sight loss. Many premises on the high street are now displaying window stickers saying “Assistance Dogs Welcome”. Faith and her husband Joseph signed up to take part in a national Guide Dogs campaign entitled High Street Heroes, which sees volunteers visit their local high street to promote the access rights of assistance dogs. Faith said: “We got a warm welcome from every shop we visited, including Harry’s Sandwich Shop, Arlene’s Florist, building societies, two chemists, the local Spar, the card shop, the local estate agents, hairdressers, the funeral directors and three pub restaurants – the Angel, the Prince of Wales and Greenacres. “Kenfig Hill is full of local businesses and every single one we visited was kind, supportive and very willing to display the sticker.” Andrea Gordon, engagement manager for Guide Dogs Cymru, said: “Faith and her guide dog Buddy are a familiar sight in Kenfig Hill, and it is good that they feel so welcome there. “The Equality Act 2010 rules that assistance dog owners have the right to access businesses and services without discrimination. Yet three-quarters of owners who responded to a recent survey said they had been refused access at some point because they had their dog with them. “Access refusals can be a really upsetting experience, affecting confidence and the ability to carry out everyday activities.” If your business would like a window sticker, or advice on helping customers with sight loss, email cymru-mt@guidedogs.org.uk

Club features TOBY DOTM

Toby is an eight-year-old Terrier cross. He can be a worried chap in new situations and around new people, however, once Toby knows you, he is a very friendly boy who loves a fuss. He is looking for a quiet home where he can be given time to settle in and grow in confidence. Toby will need to meet new owners a few times at the centre to build up a relationship before going into his new home. Toby can be a little unsure around new dogs initially so would benefit from having continued socialisation when out and about on walks as he has managed to find some nice doggy friends here at the re homing centre. Toby can live with children 14 years and above and he would prefer to be the only dog in the home. Canine Carer Molly Brooke says, “The best way to Toby’s heart is to have some tasty treats for encouragement and he will soon become your best friend.” For more information on Toby, please visit the Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Bridgend, CF31 4NG; or give us call on 01656 725219. You can also visit our website at www.dogstrust.org.uk

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Hi folks, this month I want to write about Jesus being a friend. The dictionary defines friendship as a person who you know well and who you like a lot. I suppose it’s not a bad definition – but what about how a true friend is always there for you, through thick and thin. Someone who will never leave you. That is what Jesus is like when we seek His friendship. When I was personally in a very dark place Jesus brought me through. He has been faithful, helping in every situation in life – giving hope, strength, peace and comfort. Jesus is absolutely real and His heart is for you if you open your heart to Him and seek His friendship. Here’s what it says in Hebrews 13 v 5 (AV) – He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] Neil Harvey

PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB

Once more the Porthcawl Stroke Club have been one of the benefactors from the Masonic Ladies Bowls annual coffee morning. The Ladies raised £400 for our society and many of those women are also members of the Sker WI, in Nottage and work tirelessly for charities within the local community. There was a splendid cake stall, beautiful floral arrangements, plants books etc. There was also an exquisite patchwork cushion made by Mrs Pam Wilde and an abundance of raffles prizes. The cheque presentation was made by Bowls Captain Mrs Jean Downes and Bowls Secretary Mrs Wendy Williams to Mrs Barbara Matthews at the Albert Edward Prince of Wales Court Home, where the Porthcawl Stroke Club hold their weekly meetings. Chairman Mr Keith Duggan and Mrs Mary Duggan express their sincere gratitude for this generous gift, which helps towards tackling isolation for Stroke survivors. PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM So November is upon us, which means that it will be Christmas before we know it! Whilst that may be a scary thought, it also means we’ve got another opportunity to have some fun and raise money for local charities. The Swim Committee are delighted to announce that this year’s headline charity is Alzheimers Society Cymru. Dementia affects around 850,000 people in the UK with 1 in 14 over 65’s suffering from the disease. Research is vital to help not only find a cure but also to develop ways to help people with dementia live as well as the can for as long as they can. To link to this our theme for this year’s swim is ‘A Trip Down Memory Lane’. Keep an eye on our social media pages for more details in the run up to the event. You’ll also find the link to a Just Giving Page to help you fund raise on our website www.christmasswim.org. If you’d like to help and can spare some time, please contact us via social media or email christmasswim@gmail.com See you in the sea!

Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My wife and I separated three months. I have recently met another woman but she was not the reason for the split. My wife has discovered this and has now stopped contact with my two children. She is very bitter and I really do not know what to do next. Answer:This scenario often arises and I have every sympathy for you. There may a number of reasons for this. She may be simply jealous or resentful that you have moved on. However, it is important that you also have some understanding that your wife may also be concerned that you will introduce your new girlfriend to your children early on in the relationship which would be very unwise. If you are unable to resolve this issue by talking directly to your wife, I recommend that you consider attending Mediation with your wife, which is a very constructive and cost effective way of resolving such issues. Mediation is a prerequisite to applying to the Court. If Mediation is not productive or your wife refuses to attend, you may wish to consider making an application to the Court for a Child Arrangements Order. You would specify the times and days you would wish to see the children both during term time and school holidays and special occasions such as Christmas, Birthdays etc. Very often arrangements can be settled at the first Conciliation Hearing with a CAFCASS Officer who is an Officer appointed by the Court to assist the parties in reaching an agreement. If this is unsuccessful and in the absence of any welfare concerns, you and your wife will then file Statements setting out your respective positions and the case will proceed to a final hearing where the Court will make a decision on the long term arrangements for your children. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO ONCE YOU REACH AN AGREEMENT IN RESPECT OF FINANCES FOLLOWING DIVORCE? A Consent Order is a financial order that can be issued by the Court when a divorcing couple have reached a financial agreement between themselves during divorce. If you and your spouse can reach agreement between yourselves, you should always have this made legally binding by obtaining a Consent Order, which is approved by the Courts. Once a Consent Order has been finalised, neither of you will normally be able to make a new financial claim against the other. Negotiating an agreement is always preferable to arguing things out in Court and asking a judge to decide. If necessary, you can instruct help from your solicitors or use the mediation process. Without a Consent Order, there is always a possibility that your former spouse will try to make a claim later, maybe against assets acquired after the marriage broke down, there is no limit to how long after the divorce this can happen. Even if you and your partner draw up an agreement between yourselves, this does not have the same effect as a legally binding Consent Order from the Court. You can apply for a Consent Order at any stage after the Decree Nisi has been granted. It is a good idea to obtain the Consent Order before the divorce is finalised with the Decree Absolute. The Consent Order should include: • Your home - whether it will be sold and the proceeds divided or ownership transferred to one of you; • how other assets such as savings, investments or business interests will be dealt with; • what will happen to personal possessions such as furniture; • how any pension schemes will be shared; • child maintenance for any children; • whether one of you will pay the other spousal maintenance, and for how long; • who will take responsibility for any outstanding debts; • an agreement that neither of you can make a claim as a financial dependant when the other dies. You will both need to complete a statement of information form summarising what capital and income each of you have. These are sent to the court together with the signed Consent Order and a £50 court fee. The Judge will approve the terms of the agreement making sure they are fair and legal. The Judge may want to ask a few questions – either in writing or at a hearing – if the agreement seems excessively one-sided. Once the judge is satisfied, the consent order is ‘sealed’ and becomes legally binding. PRE-NUPTIAL AGREEMENTS Often family lawyers are asked to advise on prenuptial agreements. Commonly, concerns arise if one party to a marriage is bringing in more assets than the other, and wants to ring fence those assets to prevent them disappearing in a divorce case later down the line. It is hard as a solicitor to advise clients on such matters, as the law is not clear, but in 2011, a point of principle was established in the case of Radmacher v Granatino. This was that the court should give effect to pre-nuptial (or post-nuptial) agreements which are freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications, unless it would be unfair to do so. There is no law to enforce parties being bound by pre-nuptial agreements. However, providing certain elements are in place it is more likely that parties will be bound by the terms of an agreement. These elements are: 1. That the agreement was entered into without any undue influence or pressure. 2. That there was full and frank disclosure by each party to the agreement in order that the financially weaker party knew and understood what the financially stronger person has. 3. That each party received independent legal advice. 4. That the financially weaker party had plenty of time to consider the terms of the agreement. 5. That any children or potential children were considered. The document should be properly drafted with each party being made fully aware of the other’s assets at the outset. Commonly, such documents ring fence any prior owned assets, and share any assets which have been jointly acquired during the marriage. If you are contemplating entering into a pre-nuptial or postnuptial agreement, independent legal advice is essential for both Parties in order to avoid problems later on. Women’s institutions MYNYDD CYNFIG WI We meet in our usual meeting place The Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill 2pm to 4.30pm. Meeting chaired by Christine, minutes read out by Katherine and WI business by Enid which included the craft spectacular in the Orangery Margam and the Carol Festival in the Brangwyn Hall Swansea. A trip to the ballet in Cardiff in December was discussed. The members were told of our trip to the Hi Tide for the Federation Quiz, sorry we didn’t win but we all enjoyed the night out, we even managed to take a supporter with us Buddy he is the guide dog of one of our members he didn’t contribute to any of our answers but was admired by all. Our speaker this month was Helyn Latimer from the puppet theatre Wales. She told us how puppets have come down through the centuries and how they are very much in demand today. The War Horse is a good example, she fetched several puppets for us to see and we had a go of making them work. We were laughing at our efforts but was amazed at the workmanship. Next month it’s Grace Sollis with craft items, so we can all get ready for Christmas, tea and biscuits fetched our meeting to a close, call in any time. Christine Callaghan

LALESTON WI NEWS Laleston WI met on October 3rd with 21 members present. All members who went on the trip to the Mansion House in Cardiff, for afternoon tea and a tour of the house, had really enjoyed. Members were informed that we would have a New Year’s lunch, and members were asked for suggestions for the venue. The speaker Dean Powell was introduced and he spoke on The Incredible Life of Dr Price of LLantrisant; it was a very interesting talk about the man who had pioneered the use of cremation. This led to the law on cremation being changed. The vote of thanks was given by Jean Smallbone. Visitors are welcome to join the group for an insight into WI life. The WI meets on the first Thursday of each month, at The Blandy Hall, Laleston, at 7.15p.m. For more information call Diane Marshall on 01656 656600.

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS Well and truly into Autumn now but I’m not going to mention Christmas! In September we celebrated Harvest with a special tea as usual but first we had an interesting talk from Mrs Pat Richards on “Tea” - it’s history, culture and social habits. Also Mrs Judith Shawe from the Food Bank told us how it is organised and always in need of contributions. Instead of a Harvest stall members brought items for the Food Bank which were much appreciated. We are joining Swansea Federation now as Cardiff Federation has closed and are happy to do this as when we started in 1954 we were a member of Swansea and they welcomed us back. Our meeting this month is on November 13th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when the title of Miss Debra Johns talk will be “Gower Dreaming”. Debra is one of our most popular speakers so it is not one to miss. All welcome. Dorothy Thomas 772157

NEWTON WI On a very blustery evening in October, members gathered for another WI meeting, where we were pleased to welcome three new members. The ‘Shoe Box’ leaflets were distributed and completed boxes are to be collected in the November meeting by Ann Thomas. The entertainment for the evening was our own ‘Chinese Auction’ which was certainly different and hopefully was enjoyed by all. The evening ended with a special celebration cake to mark the occasion of Jean’s 80th. birthday, we wish her a very happy day. Shirley’s September Walk was around the Porthcawl wilderness area, followed by fish and chips at Beale’s. The Christmas Fayre this year will be held on Friday, November 15th at Trinity, come and join us for a cuppa and hopefully find a Christmas bargain. Quite a busy time to look forward to, with trips organised to Cardiff and the WI Carol Concert at the Brangwyn Hall in December. M Freeman

Business & finance MOBILITY AND ADAPTING THE HOME – IS THIS YOU? One of the most rewarding cases we have ever had the pleasure of dealing with is the case of a husband and wife who were on the verge of having to sell up and move home because they couldn’t afford to adapt the house following the husband having a severe stroke. They didn’t want move as the property had been their home for over 30 years and the prospect of having to up sticks and go at this late stage of their life (both in their 70s) was the most upsetting aspect, whilst actually finding a suitable property for their needs was proving to be even more difficult. It was a chance conversation with someone at Age Concern who knew us, that prompted them to call to see how we might be able to help them even if only with some good advice as to how they should approach the impending and upsetting situation. Having had a really good chat with the couple’s daughter and the wife, with the husband listening on due to his difficulty with speaking following the stroke, we found a way to keep them in the property, raising enough capital from within the property to pay for all the adaptation work, including a new walk-in wet room and stair lift as well as widening doorways, etc. Plus of course, they were able to avoid the very considerable costs of moving, the removals company, Estate Agents fees for selling, their Solicitors costs, hefty stamp duty payment to the Government on the new purchase (many thousands of pounds in total) and perhaps most importantly, the sheer human emotional cost. Needless to say the Family are all delighted and the money spent on the house has been put back into the house through the improvements. The lender offered the facility to make interest payments for borrowing the money, hence minimising or avoiding the effect of rolling up the interest and helping to preserve the equity within the property, should they choose to do follow that route. If they don’t wish to make any payments, they don’t have to. Although the husband’s mobility has been permanently affected, I am assured by their daughter, that being able to remain in their home is the very best they could have hoped for and they can now get on with enjoying the rest of their lives, as circumstances will allow. If you are affected by this kind of situation or feel that having a discussion would be appropriate, please call us on 01656 782545

BREXIT OVER! OR IS IT? By the time you get to read this Brexit could be done and the whining and winging will be over, but we know that’s far from it. So how will it affect us all in a year, five years or ten years? The honest answer is no one really knows. In the short term there will be continued uncertainty and the only thing you can guarantee is further volatility in the markets. Most people have lost the will to live as it’s consumed us all in every aspect of life and I think we are all ready to move on. This week I had a lovely book bought for me called ‘What Is Brexit’? It’s a Ladybird publication and I must admit it makes far more interesting reading than the political piffle we’ve had to endure in the last three years. Why am I telling you this? Well it will probably be a future collector’s item and will no doubt be on The Antiques Roadshow by 2050! From the perspective of an investor the current blip will not matter in the long term, so you carry on being invested as the markets will always reward the patient investor says Warren Buffet. If you chicken out and move all your money into cash you will never know when to buy back in. Witness what happened after the referendum in 2016, anyone who sold up missed out on the market rise in the following six months. There’s an old maxim that reads ‘Don’t worry about anything you have no control over’ so if your wife burns the Sunday roast you just shut up, if the market falls ignore it. If you’re superstitious and stay in bed on Friday 13th the roof can still fall in on you so you have to carry on as if nothing’s going to affect you. So did we get that deal? You know more than me by now! Philip Vaughan is a Director at Abacus Assurance Financial Services Ltd Porthcawl. 01656 772222 PHILIP VAUGHAN Abacus Assurance 01656 772222

Gardening advice LALESTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS

Our Clubs series of talks and demonstrations is well underway yet we still find time for some fun and entertainment with a quiz night. It is a lighthearted evening with a mixture of questions on gardening as well as general knowledge. In our gardens it is time to generally tidy up and gather leaves. If you have a lot of leaves at this time of year have you thought of making some leaf mould? It makes good use of this material and couldn’t be easier – simply bag up the leaves and stack them away in a corner of the garden. Leave them for a year and you will end up with a nice crumbly mulch to use on the garden. Are you a ‘dig’ or ‘no dig’ gardener? Either way the mulch can be put to good use at this time of year by returning some great bulky organic matter back to your soil. Don’t forget to give your lawnmower a thorough clean before it is put away for the winter, as this will reduce the risk of problems when you come to service it next spring. BUGLIFE SPINS A NEW WEB Buglife the leading charity in Europe for insect conservation have been busy spinning a new website. A key feature of the new clean cut website is the addition of a multi-media tool that enables readers to change the words into around 100 different languages including many as audible read outs. There are also special tools to assist people with colour blindness and other visual impairment and even a special script to improve accessibility for people with dyslexia. One of the really useful features is that the entire content can be available in Welsh where as in the past there were only selected pages available in the Welsh language. Beyond improved accessibility the site aims to have clearer user defined navigation and a new bug identifier that is be expanded upon over time. The website was built by Peterborough based Free Thinking Design working closely with Buglife using the WordPress platform – the work was funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery Green Trust. “We are really excited with our new website, the increased accessibility and enhanced user experience will be a real boon for the charity. The new site is also so much easier to operate from the back end enabling us to continual enhance the user experience.” Commented Paul Hetherington, Director of Fundraising and Communications at Buglife.

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB November is here; time to put away the mower for the winter (Hooray!) before you abandon it to the shed give it a bit of TLC, a good clean, so it will be tip-top when spring arrives. If you are planting tulips thus month and squirrels are plentiful where you live, cover the ground with chicken wire afterwards to stop our furry friends digging them up for dinner! Winter bedding plants are little miracles in the gardener’s life, just as the summer blooms are dying off these colourful delights (pansies, violas, polyanthus and sweet Williams) are ready to explode onto the scene, they have a wonderful cheering up impact wherever you plant them, make the most of them! Elephant garlic can be planted now; each clove will produce a huge bulb of mild flavoured cloves, it’s better suited to wet soil than your average garlic, really worth a try if you’ve failed on the garlic front before! We have a quiz in Cefn Social Club 7.30 on the 12th November, come along and test your wits against Cefn’s best, it’s fun! Did you know the chrysanthemum is November’s Flower. It symbolizes joy and optimism, just what us gardeners need. Chris Early

An excellent article in this month’s issue of the RHS magazine, “The Garden”, makes a convincing case for the ‘no-dig’ approach to growing vegetables. Charles Dowding runs a ¾ acre market garden and can show improved yields for less physical effort. This will be especially beneficial for gardeners who cannot manage the heavy work of digging and constant weeding. The answer lies in an annual mulching in Autumn with compost, either self-made or bought-in as bagged, sterile farmyard manure. Manures straight from the farm must be well rotted but will always contain a multitude of problems such as weed seeds and residues from animal feeds. Spread the compost about 1 to 1.5 inches deep and allow Nature to take its course over the winter. The RHS Chief Horticulturalist writes that ‘no-dig’ is supported by scientific research, which shows reduced soil degradation and erosion, an increase in organic matter enhancing soil fertility, raising water-holding capacity and stabilising soil structure. Note that Seed Orders under the NSALG seed scheme with King’s seeds must be in by Nov 2nd. Our AGM will be held on 12th November at All Saints Church Hall followed by a Gardening Quiz set by Mrs Sheena Crossley. Please attend. Frank Fulgoni

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER Christmas is almost upon us and we thought of a way you can help those going through treatment throughout the month of January 2020. Why don’t you donate what you would spend on Christmas Cards to Cost of Cancer which will go towards helping those who are currently going through treatment pay their January heating bills. There are numerous ways you can donate. You can either go onto our website and click one of the donate buttons, we also have a donate button on our Facebook page or you can do it the oldfashioned way and send us a cheque. It’s important for a cancer patient to stay warm whilst they’re going through treatment for cancer. So please send your Christmas wishes via the many different social media platforms and donate that money to Cost of Cancer and you’ll be helping so many people this winter. The last event in our 2019 calendar is our Annual Light for A Life. This where we get to remember our loved ones. You can sponsor a light on our Christmas Tree (there is no fixed amount) and each light on the tree represents a life lost. This doesn’t have to be a life lost to cancer, we’re just remembering our loved ones. We have a memory book and if you fill in the form with a message that message gets uploaded to our website and you’ll be able to see your message at any time. It’s just our way of remembering. You’ll also get a seeded heart which you can plant in memory of those who aren’t with us. It’s down at the Hi-Tide on the 1st December from about 5pm, keep an eye out on our Facebook page for updates. Father Christmas will be there, there’s a delicious hog roast, we have raffle prizes and we also have a choir singing the best in carols. We also have the vicar from Newton Parish to say a prayer for our loved ones. They may be gone but they’ll never be forgotten. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees Cost of Cancer www.costofcancer.org.uk

NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLENT Mosquitoes in general only live up to a week, but the females stick around longer – they can live for several months. Despite their short lifespans, mosquitoes must be eliminated to lower your risk of various health conditions. These annoying and deadly pests carry bacteria, parasites, and viruses in their saliva. Once you get bitten by a mosquito, these pathogens are transmitted into your body. The following are natural repellents and will help deter them. For Appointments Call: 07815 848 339 MEDITATION The inclination towards a life based on depth rather than on the surface activity of events is a fundamental cause for the development of pãramì, potentials that we can firm up into guiding intentions. Potentials such as generosity, virtue and renunciation are deeply supportive faculties. They make us clear about our own values and intelligence, and as we develop these, they become a kind of temple, a sanctuary within which we can stand, look around and formulate a path for practice. And the Buddha once described the Way of that practice as being ‘for my welfare, for the welfare of others and leading to Nibbãna (peace)’ (M.19). Whatever we do, whatever views or aims we hold, if we examine them under the light of these criteria, our actions will generate perfections and spread them into blessings for others. Outside of this temple of practice, we don’t see where we get caught; or we see it but think we have no choice but to be caught up in our moods and impulses. Such an assumption deprives us of dignity and self-respect. So, when we don’t acknowledge our own inner temple, and visit it often, we lose faith in ourselves, and weaken our potential for complete liberation from suffering and stress. Neville Evans

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

The recently held charity concert at All Saints Church, with the Polperro Fisherman’s choir, was an amazing success. Despite the shocking weather the church was packed to overflowing. The audience was treated to an eclectic mix of Cornish, Welsh and traditional male choir pieces. In addition, duets by Mair and John Jones provided a wonderful addition to the evening. The MC Rev. Phil Denyer and the Polperro MC kept the audience well entertained. Musical highlights from the choirs included the appropriately timed ‘World in Union’, theme of the Rugby World Cup from the Porthcawl choir and ‘When the Saints’ from the Polperro boys. Concluding the evening was a rousing version of Gwahoddiad, in English and Welsh by both choirs. The evening raised over £1600 for Latch, wonderful! Thanks to all involved in the event, too many to mention, especially all of the audience who generously donated towards this worthy cause. Special thanks to Mary from the Waterfront for hosting the ‘afterglow’ party. Following the successful annual and charity concerts the choir is now back to rehearsing for the Christmas events. Bolstered by an influx of new members we are really looking forward to the festive activities. Ian Williams

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

It seems hard to imagine, but twenty-five years have passed since Downwood Films began producing our local history documentary series, starting with “The History of Newton Church”. Since then, we have toured the main centres of 52 | seaside news

population in this locality, including Porthcawl, Bridgend, Port Talbot and Maesteg, producing films about each town’s history. Most of these took the best part of twelve months from early research to release, and now, with the passing of time, contain scenes, which have become part of history themselves. “Dangerous Coast” brings back memories of making detailed models of the S.S. Samtampa (1/96th scale) and Mumbles lifeboat (1/12th scale), something that took eighteen months to accomplish. “The Restoration of Sker House” was a wonderful experience, charting the progress of saving an important historic building from collapse. The most adventurous production was “Ghosts of Glamorgan”, using local actors to portray twelve different supernatural tales. The company is currently preparing the production of its most ambitious film, “The Mystery of the Llandow Air Disaster” which, when it happened in 1950, was the world’s worst civil aviation accident. With the twenty-fifth anniversary now upon us, watch out for the DVD re-release of all existing titles. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

There’s a huge event that slips under the radar of most locals – the Planet Rockstock Festival, which is back at Trecco Bay on December 6th – 8th. It’s organised by the Planet Rock radio station and features some of the world’s biggest rock bands. Topping the bill are the legendary Uriah Heep, who have sold over 40 million albums. The Heep are massive all over the world, especially in Europe where in 1987 they became the first western rock band to play in the Soviet Union, making history at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium playing to 180,000 people across ten consecutive nights. They’ve been a big influence on my music career and are great guys, too. Other top groups on the bill include Skid Row, The Quireboys, The Temperance Movement and many more. Former Ezra guitarist Andy Edwards is back with new project “Mighty Ra” – check out their video “We Must Travel Through”. It’s good! Welcome back, Andy! Bridgend’s Those Damn Crows’ new album “Point of No Return” is out on 7th February, and you can catch them live at Swansea’s Patti Pavilion on Friday December 13th. Well I’m off now to put up my Xmas tree, I’m late! Keep your music news coming. Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Stag with Uriah Heep’s Bernie Shaw and Mick Box

THE GONDOLIERS BY GILBERT AND SULLIVAN

At The Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl The Mid Glamorgan Savoyards will present a charity performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s delightful comic opera “The Gondoliers”, on Saturday 16th November, in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl at 7-30pm. This opera, first produced in 1889, is the last of the very popular comic operas that came from the collaboration between the famous duo. The music is fresh and lively and the fanciful (Topsy Turvy) plot starts with a happy go lucky group of Gondoliers and their lady friends in Venice. It then finishes in a fictitious place called Barataria in Spain where one of two gondoliers expects to become king. The performance will clearly provide an evening of delightful musical entertainment to remember. Since starting in 1994, the company has raised over £65,000 for local and national charities. This year, the proceeds will be divided between Ty Hafan, the Welsh children’s hospice, Macmillan, for cancer support and KRUF for kidney research. Tickets (£12-00) may be obtained from the Pavilion Box office, the charities and from members of the company.

Sport reports END OF SEASON FUN AND GBR PERFORMANCES

Pen y Bont SLSC is very proud to congratulate its members who competed in the recent European Lifesaving Championships in Riccione, Italy, for team GBR. Ashley Lewis, a member of the male senior team, won gold in the sprint relay, taplin relay and had silver in the board rescue. Millie Wiggins, a member of the youth female team, had gold in the sprint relay, second in sprints and third in ski. Meriel Clode, also a member of the youth female team, won gold in the mixed taplin relay and had second in ski. Well done to them and all the GBR athletes! Pen y Bont’s juniors, seniors and masters finished the beach competition season with a bit of fun at the annual Gully Run and Hardy’s Swim. The event is club-run and was a huge success this year. There were some great performances on the day, including Sam Moore’s wetsuit-less swim to win the Dai Splash memorial award, an award close to the hearts of many at Pen y Bont SLSC. Similarly, our nippers finished their season with lots of fun at the Whitmore Bay nipper carnival, where alongside many big smiles they put in great performances to come second overall! Meriel Clode

SURF REPORT OGMORE BY SEA & SOUTHERNDOWN Wave had yet another near fatal accident at the river mouth (many fatal ones of the years) in which I was involved in dragging a man out of the waves. It has left me with severe flash backs and anxieties. I shouldn’t have to go through this. 1st I would like to thank the other members of the public who came to help and the off duty lady life guard and the man who resuscitated him. Also the RNLI and the Coast Guard and ambulance services all turning up with haste as they do every time. I’m sure they and the residence of Ogmore by sea are fed up of attending at Ogmore by Sea and Southerndown plus all the noise and activity. I just would like to raise an issue at this point and say I think something needs to be done to stop people walking along that stretch of river at the mouth there. A pretty fence and pretty benches along that length may be the answer. No obvious Access. And there should be a legal ban on waders. They are lethal. D.A. Batten

It was great for all the club to share in the excitement and elation of those newer members who had “graduated” through the Couch to 5k, stayed with the Club and now have run Cardiff Half Marathon for the first time - three pictured here are Julie Morgan, Nick Lewis and Alison Cobley. Just three of over eighty of us that completed the run. Local legend Mike “the Taxi” Davis recently completed 300 Parkruns and all at Porthcawl! That’s nearly 1000 miles Mike! We’ve enjoyed having some younger runners over the summer and their hard work is paying off too with Jack Bevan getting consistently under 19 minutes for the Parkrun and Hannah Jenkins winning selection for the South Wales 10k team competing in November. Good luck from all of us Hannah. Good luck also to our current batch of Couch to 5k under the expert guidance of Alwyn and Sue Thomas. Those who missed out this time on Couch to 5k, don’t despair, as new runners and those new to running are always welcome at the club with training from Porthcawl Rugby Club at 6.30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl Runners

CONEY BEACH WHEELCHAIR FUND

During the Elvis Festival weekend an Elvis surf was held at Coney Beach plus a music event at Coney surf shop. Huge thanks to Corum & Helen Champion & their team for organising everything and Tommy D & The Tomahawks for providing the live music. A total of £500.86 was raised. We’ve also received generous donations - The Newton Music Festival committee have given £200 and the Ancient Briton have raised £100 through their pub quizzes.

Drive is a charitable organisation supporting adults with learning disabilities, ASD and mental health issues to live independently in their community. People supported by Drive talked about how they can help to keep their local community clean and tidy. They decided on a local beach clean. People supported by drive and their support workers have helped to clean three beaches so far, including Barry Island, Aberavon beach and Porthcawl. Drive worked with the local councils and the surf shop in Porthcawl who provided us with bags. All the beach cleans where facilitated by Tamzyn Long who cleans beaches around the UK in her spare time. Tamsin met us at each beach and provided all the equipment required to do the clean-up. As well as lots of plastic and rubbish, some unusual items were found too, including a workman’s hard hat! Individuals learnt about what things could be recycled and why cleaning the beach is so important in helping to protect sea life. Tamzyn Long took the items we collected on the beaches to use in her Eco Project, which she does with children in her local community. Everyone who joined us on the beach clean enjoyed it experience and are really looking forward to the next one!
