DUMPING OF RAW SEWERAGE
Dear Editor,
In October’s Seaside News, Jamie Wallace MP wrote an article criticising the recent dumping of raw sewage off Porthcawl’s coastline. While it is hard to disagree with these sentiments, what he failed to mention is how, in 2021, he voted with the conservative government in Westminster to reject an attempt by the House of Lords to tighten rules surrounding the discharge of raw sewage. In effect, this vote made it legal for utility
KEEP DANCING!
to protect their profits by dumping
sewage in the sea and rivers [1]
Wallace should use next month’s column to address this seeming contradiction. At the same time, perhaps he could also give us some further information on his recent driving ban, in which a local district judge stated that he didn’t find Mr Wallace “credible in the evidence he gave” [2]. In particular, could he please reassure his constituents that he is not using additional taxpayers’ money to employ replacement taxis and chauffeurs as a result of this ban?

Dear Editor, “The Pavilion was intended primarily to be a dancehall”- quote from Ceri Joseph’s informative article last month. Gradually this has been overlooked to the extent that the dance hall is not being used for dancing anymore. Healthy exercise and social dancing were many benefits. It is still the premier dance hall in South Wales. Before Covid, tea dances, for example, were enjoyed by locals and people from far afield. Now they do not exist. Why?

LOCAL
Earlier this year, five cosmic visitors landed in Porthcawl to help keep the area clean and tidy and local schools have helped come up with some out-of-this-world names to give the solar powered bins.
In collaboration with Keep Wales Tidy, the solarpowered bins have been wrapped and are located across Porthcawl.
Before the summer holidays, five local primary schools spent some time coming up with the names and Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor Martyn Jones, had the tough job of choosing his favourites.
• West Park Primary came up with the name ‘Ziggy’ for the bin located at Rest Bay.
• Afon y Felin Primary chose ‘Comet the Space Bin’ for the bin located on the Eastern Promenade.
• Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr named the bin on the Esplanade ‘Y Bin Hudol’ which translates to ‘The Magic Bin’.
• Newton Primary came up with the name ‘Solar Squish’ for the bin located at West Drive.
• Corneli Primary chose ‘Solar Muncher’ for the bin located at Griffin Park.
Councillor Martyn Jones, Mayor of Bridgend County Borough said: “It’s wonderful to see local schools getting involved with projects like this and I hope it will be successful in discouraging people from littering.
“Choosing my favourite names was a tough job as all the entries were very clever and creative, however, the final
choices are great and can remind residents that the bins are here to say and should be used regularly.”
As the bins are solar-powered, cleaner streets operatives will be alerted when they are nearly full, so they can be emptied regularly.
There are already enforcements in place to try and combat littering and if caught dropping litter in a public place you could be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100 under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
Pam Bacon, Regional Manager Central West for Keep Wales Tidy said: “We are delighted that five new alien solar bins have moved into Porthcawl, this is a new, novel way to get everyone recycling the correct way.
“We have had a bit of fun on this trial and tried to come up with something a bit different that will hopefully capture everyone’s attention.
“We really hope they will inspire people of all ages to do the right thing.”
The initiative has been funded by the Welsh Government Rural Communities, Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

THE BOOK OF THE MONTH LANDLINES, by Raymond Winn
Some people live to walk. Raynor and Moth walk to live . . . Raynor Winn knows that her husband Moth’s health is declining, getting worse by the day. She knows of only one cure. It worked once before. But will he - can he? - set out with her on another healing walk?
The Cape Wrath Trail is over two hundred miles of gruelling terrain through Scotland’s remotest mountains and lochs. But the lure of the wilderness and the beguiling beauty of the awaiting glens draw them northwards. Being one with nature saved them in their darkest hour and their hope is that it can work its magic again. They embark on an incredible thousand-mile journey from Scotland back to the familiar shores of the South West Coast Path. From Northumberland to the Yorkshire moors, Wales to the South West, Raynor and Moth map with each step the landscape of an island nation facing an uncertain path ahead. In Landlines, she records in luminous prose the strangers and friends, wilderness and wildlife they encounter on the way - it’s a journey that begins in fear but can only end in hope.

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
What a resounding success! 500 people turned up to our annual concert at the Pavilion. There were so many highlights on the evening, including our wonderful guest artists ‘Trovatori’. This husband-and-wife duo were fantastic singers and musicians. However, the real stars of the night (apart from us old boys) were our recipients of the Dilwyn Evans Memorial Award, Agnes Pottage and Samantha Welsley. These two very talented local young ladies greatly entertained the crowd. Our last-minute stand in for MC on the night, Paul Morgan, was fantastic, despite his renaming of the choir ‘only granddads allowed’. Our Musical Director Alec Brooks and accompanist Richard David expertly led the choir. Once again, our ladies section were brilliant, directing all of the front of house activities. Thank you, ladies. We also thank the hard-working staff of the Pavilion who made everything work smoothly. Finally, would like to put out a huge thanks to all our loyal supporters for turning out in their droves and for all the invited guest who graced us with their presence. After a short break we’re back practicing for our Christmas concerts. We’ll be announcing these soon. contact@pothcawlmalechoir.co.uk Noel Williams on 07902 333559
A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
As production work on The Llandow Air Disaster draws towards its close, with mostly special effects work still to do, the process of post-production approaches – when the film is edited – and at this point a rather important decision has to be made: is the film to have any music, and if so, what is it to be? The subject of the film is the story of a great tragic event, so the choice of music is very important as it has to match the mood of the narrative. Every film presents its own challenge in this respect, no matter what the story happens to be, and I usually feel inclined to shy away from classical music because somehow it seems wrong to take a well-known piece and associate it with a particular event. Modern music would be even less appropriate. The alternative? Something specially composed for the film, but that would be prohibitively expensive, and even then it might turn out to be not entirely suitable. Maybe the subject of the film suggests no music at all – just the sound of aero engines and then silence. I am open to suggestions, so you are welcome to text me any ideas.

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK
Thanks for all the calls, so there’s plenty of news. Nice to hear from Pyle’s Rob Edwards. Rob has been a mainstay of the area’s music scene and drummed in numerous bands. He’s just released a new song and video which he sang and wrote, and which you can check on YouTube under “Rob Edwards Breaking Up (Official). The song was mixed by Andrew Richards and the video filmed by Aiden Thomas. Both film and song are impressive indeed. It’s a ballad with a bit of a country feel to it and worth a listen. Rob’s getting a new band together called 2EDs with his son Steffan and bassist Greg Jones (ex Revolva), and I look forward to seeing them live!
The Royal Oak, Kenfig Hill, has a jam night on a Thursday so I’ve heard, but check it with the pub first. Other good jam and open mic nights in Porthcawl include Thursday’s The Rock run by that great duo Calon, The Picton on Tuesday and Thursdays, The Prince (6pm) on Sundays plus band nights in The Marine on Fridays, the Royal Oak on Sundays and The Buccaneer over the weekends.

KING CHARLES THE THIRD
King Charles the Third and King Charles the Brave
With gratitude we salute you. Since a child you understood the pressing weight of sovereignty Seeking to lighten the load of beloved parents
In youth bowing to become our Prince of Wales.
Now in maturity and in the pain of bereavement you are became King Charles
Charles the third and we pray King Charles the Blessed For your Mother’s prayers and example pave your way. So now, stand strong, King Charles the Brave, Your lovely Queen beside you. Your people’s prayers now rise anew. ‘God save our King we pray.’ ‘God save our gracious King.’ Pauline Lewis, Porthcawl
A HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY
I feel you’re there Mum but I can’t see you, And I can hear your voice in my head, It would be great to talk like we used to do, But fond memories are there instead.
I feel that you help me in lots of ways, Your advice always comes just in time, So now on this very special day, I have written you this little rhyme.
I can’t get you a birthday present, Or take you out for a lovely meal, All I can do is tell you I miss you so much, And that feeling is still very real.
Marilyn Cook, Bridgend
THE ABERCYNON GIRL
Of course those dark filled thoughts are true
They lurk amongst the rock strewn past But now one comes to guide you through To take your timid hand at last He comes by some unfathomed call He has no choice, it is his fate He must answer yes, or fall Amongst those boulders on the way That beset this Abercynon girl Your knight has rallied to the call Descended from we not where That is not for us to care
Just trust that this is meant to be So take this hand I offer now To you my Abercynon girl And we will thread our way as one Between the dark imaginings you hold At last emerging into light To leave that darkening past behind And bask in wakening love anew Rodger Garratt, Porthcawl
OGMORE CASTLE
The Ewenny river flows beside the castle’s proud remains, A medieval stronghold gracing Ogmore’s marshy plains.
Its river-path of stepping stones, like a well-worn string of pearls, Has borne the weight of peasants, commoners and earls.
Fine stone, quarried from the grounds of Southerndown.
This highly praised ‘Sutton Stone’ built castles all around.
Old walls bear scars from battles and the ravages of time, Echoes of our ancestors ingrained within the lime.
Once great, prosperous lordship, nestling in our fertile vale, A relic of a time gone by, in our beloved Wales.
Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend
THE CHRISTMAS ELF
The Christmas elf has come to stay, As Santa said he should.
To watch those little boys and girls, And see if they’ve been good.
He’ll watch them when they’re playing And watch them being fed.
He’ll watch them when it’s bath-time And when they go to bed.
On Christmas Eve he’ll leave them As Santa needs him back. Have they all been good enough To have presents in their sack.
So boys and girls remember You must be good as gold.
If the elf thinks you are naughty Then Santa will be told.
Remember children - be very good! Judy Dee, Porthcawl

COST OF CANCER
As you all know we had to sadly cancel our charity ball which we were really gutted, however our band Omega Blend came to the rescue along with their friend who owns 96deg in Cowbridge to allow us to hold an event on in their premises with Omega Blend playing. What an amazing night it was when we totalled up, we’d made £2400. I know amazing right?
We did our bike ride which was just incredible, and we raised £4500 which we were all really pleased with. So, thank you to all our shirt sponsors and to everyone who sponsored us. Next in store for us is our annual Light for A Life which is on Sunday 4th December from 5pm at The Hi-Tide. Father Christmas will be there for the kids, and we’ll have some fab raffle prizes too.
It is really important for us to keep putting the message out there, what and why we do what we do.
For those of you who don’t know, we help families of those who are going through treatment for cancer. We help with the bills that arrive on the door mat every month regardless of what the occupants are going through. Bills like gas, electric, water etc.
So, if your family is affected or you know someone is affected you know what to do, get in touch with us. We offer families total discretion and privacy.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF CINNAMON
Cinnamon is rich in antioxidants and other beneficial compounds. Some research suggests that it may help support blood sugar control, protect against heart disease, and reduce inflammation. Cinnamon is a spice that has been prized for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. In recent years, modern science has started to confirm many of the potential health benefits associated with Cinnamon. It’s high in cinnamaldehyde, which is thought to be responsible for most of Cinnamon’s health benefits. The antioxidants in it have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help lower your risk of disease. Cinnamon may improve some key risk factors for heart disease, including cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. Cinnamon has been shown to reduce fasting blood sugar levels when used in doses ranging from 1–6 g or 0.5–2 tsp. per day. Animal and test-tube studies indicate that cinnamon may have protective effects against cancer but more research in humans is needed. Cinnamaldehyde has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which may reduce infections, as well as tooth decay and bad breath. Further research in humans is needed.

ONLY JOKING!
Laugh I could have cried when I read in Psychology Today that the average 4-year-old laughs 300 times a day and the average 40-year-old only four.
Hard to believe? Why not put it to a test and for the rest of your day catch yourself laughing and add those funny moments up. What makes you laugh? Comedians, corny jokes, unexpected falls, doing something the wrong way, dropping things, hair sticking up, too much make up, work colleagues, clothes not fitting, trying to be serious, driving, traffic, weather?
Laughter changes us we feel more positive, optimistic, hopeful and engaged, friendlier, resourceful, attractive and radiantly alive.
Too much effort for you? Try surrounding yourself with happy people and soak up their happiness and as laughing is contagious who knows you may start laughing as well.
What if, just for today, you were to throw in at least a few extra laughs? What used to make you giggle? TV favourites and YouTube videos just press play!
What would you feel like if you laughed like a 4-year-old today, and tomorrow, and the next? What would we all feel like?
What would the world be like if laughter became, once again, our natural state?

Question: Being a keen runner in my youth I now suffer with painful Knee joints. Are there any natural vitamins or supplements that you can recommend which will help ease this?
Answer: It is estimated that around 10 million people in the UK suffer from joint and musclerelated problems. The main joint tissues are tendons, ligaments, cartilages and spinal discs.
Turmeric & Black Pepper – Our most popular vitamin for pain which also has health benefits, due to the 2 compounds. The human body finds it difficult to absorb turmeric extract alone, so the black pepper extract helps the absorption process and allows you to gain the full benefits of curcumin. A good quality supplement can help reduce arthritis pain, inflammation, relieve joint pain and improve flexibility.
Collagen Joint formula – Collagen plays a significant role in maintaining flexibility as production decreases from the age of 25, at a rate of approximately 1.5% per year. This Formula combines a number of carefully selected nutrients ideal for those with an active lifestyle or for extra support later in life. The product also contains Vitamin D3 and Zinc to help maintain normal bones, Copper and Manganese which help in the maintenance of normal connective tissue and Vitamin C which
Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM or Glucosamine Sulfate – Glucosamine is found naturally in the body’s joint cartilage, helping keep it healthy and lubricated. Glucosamine structurally supports connective tissue integrity within the joint. Glucosamine sulfate is taken orally to treat a painful condition caused by the inflammation, breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage (osteoarthritis). Dietary supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin are the non-surgical treatment options for cartilage restoration and prevent degradation of cartilage and promote formation of new cartilage.

PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
It has been a busy time behind the scenes at the Town Council with the staff working hard on numerous projects. In July the Town Council signed a five-year lease on Griffin Park, which meant the operational running of Griffin Park passed from Bridgend County Borough Council to the Town Council. To date there have been some small changes in the park, for example the installation of new bigger bins, which will prevent wildlife accessing them and spreading litter all over the park. Continuing with Griffin Park, I am pleased to announce that Porthcawl Town Council are the first Town Council in Wales to create a dedicated memorial to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The memorial will be a dedicated picnic area called ‘The Marmalade Garden’ Council felt that this would be especially appropriate in a children’s play area which will recognise the Queen’s affectionate relationship with Paddington Bear. This will be situated opposite the Children’s Play Area. The date of unveiling of the memorial is yet to be confirmed, however please keep an eye on the Council’s website for further information. This is one of many plans that the Town Council has for Griffin Park and it recognised that the improvements may have to take place gradually, with the ultimate objective to provide a first class recreational area for the Town. The Country as a whole, are currently in a cost of living and energy crisis and the Council has been considering ways in which they can help the community. Following discussions with other local groups and organisations in the town, I am pleased to inform you that Council have agreed to open Griffin Park Bowling Pavilion throughout the winter months, twice weekly, as a Warm Space. The scheme will be delivered through a partnership working with ‘Porthcawl Community Support’. Talks on how this will be delivered effectively are on-going but for more information on the scheme, please contact the Town Council Offices. Finally, the Council has been working hard on plans for Christmas this year and has recently appointed a new Christmas Light provider –The Christmas Decorators. You will notice some changes and the Council want everyone to know that this is the first part of a long-term ambition concerning Christmas lights for Porthcawl. Cost implications affect what the Council is able to achieve however, plans for Christmas Lighting 2022 include John Street, Station Hill, Newton & Nottage Greens and Griffin Park. There will be a Christmas light switch on in Griffin Park on Saturday 3rd December 2022, following the Porthcawl Museums Christmas event–keep an eye out for further details.

LUCIE THE LAND TRAIN WINS
TOP AWARD
It was fantastic to see Emmaus South Wales named Social Enterprise Of The Year at the recent 2022 Social Business Awards Wales for providing Porthcawl’s new land train service. The success comes just 18 months after Bridgend County Borough Council named Emmaus as its preferred operator for the new service.
Established as part of the Visit Wales Tourist Attractor Destinations scheme, Lucie the land train has been a huge hit.
Able to carry up to 68 passengers and wheelchair accessible, it operates along a four-mile route between Sandy Bay and Rest Bay.
The route connects the town centre with the seafront and takes in key stops such as Coney Beach, Porthcawl marina, the Grand Pavilion and the Rest Bay Watersports Centre.
As well as offering visitors and local residents a unique service, the land train is staffed by a team of formerly homeless people who work alongside an experienced driver to gain new skills and build confidence for future employment while also raising funds for the charity’s accommodation and support services.
Well done to Emmaus South Wales for winning this prestigious award so soon after the service was introduced – they and Lucie the land train will now represent Wales at next month’s UKwide Social Enterprise Awards.

REFERRALS AND FUNDING ROUNDTABLE
For Mental Health Awareness Day last month, it was great to host a ‘referrals and funding’ roundtable at Mental Health Matters in Bridgend. Thank you to BAVO for attending and advising on the issues being faced in our community. Last year myself and Huw Irranca-Davies MS for Ogmore were asked by local support groups to coordinate a website so that services across Bridgend could be in one place. Since then, we have launched the Bridgend Mental Health Pathway website in collaboration with local support groups such as Lads and Dads, Bridgend Youth Council, Mental Health Matters, Stronger Together Bridgend, and others. I am pleased that following the launch of the website last year, we are now able to continue this collaboration by reconvening and discussing how to improve services with the Council, health services and BAVO. The costof-living crisis continues to impact the mental health of many in our community, and therefore puts pressure on the local services to provide support. As Member of the Senedd, I will do what I can to ensure that services are efficiently funded to support people during this crisis. To access the Bridgend Mental Health Pathway website, please go to: www.bridgendmentalhealthpathway.wales

REGENERATION PLANS MAKING GREAT PROGRESS
Regeneration plans for Porthcawl are making steady progress following the appropriation of 20 hectares in the Sandy Bay and Griffin Park area.
Part of the site will be available for mixed-use development featuring all-new retail, commercial, recreational, housing and leisure opportunities, and a new vehicular route will be constructed alongside an all-new school and all-weather modern tennis facilities.

Griffin Park will double in size, beach access will be enhanced and improved, and facilities for new businesses and visitors will be introduced along with 900 much-needed new homes. The site will also feature significantly improved open space for residents and visitors to enjoy which is in addition to the 200 metre-long seaside park planned at nearby Salt Lake. Future public consultation is being planned to ask residents how they want their new open space to look, and what sort of facilities they would like it to feature.
Meanwhile, work is underway to introduce new facilities at Cosy Corner including an all-new stone and glass-clad building featuring premises suitable for five retail units, public toilets, community meeting space, harbour master offices, marina changing facilities, an outdoor play area, public seating, space for staging events, an all-weather canopy and more – look out for further news on this soon.

HOTELS WILL BOOST HOLIDAY TRADE
NEWS that two of Porthcawl’s leading hotels will shortly be available once more to accommodate visitors is welcome. I fully supported BCBC’s decision to house our homeless population in hotel accommodation during the pandemic. But this was a temporary solution, which had already gone on much longer than anticipated.
New owners have bought the Atlantic and Fairways Hotels and I am looking forward to meeting them to discuss their plans. These two hotels – and others – are crucial if Porthcawl is to revert back to being a seaside resort providing accommodation of all types to those wishing to stay here.
We have plenty of caravan accommodation at Trecco as well as a number of guesthouses. But we also need quality hotels, which is why news that these will hopefully be available in the near future and certainly in time for the next summer season is good. The whole town benefits from the spin off from visitors – the shops, cafes and restaurants as well as the hotels themselves. BCBC has refocused the 39 people who were staying in these hotels and I applaud their efforts in this regard.

NEW ‘SMART’ BINS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD
Five new high-tech litterbins have been installed at key locations across Porthcawl. The bins, which each feature an eye-catching design, are powered by solar energy and are capable of detecting when they are almost full, and alerting council workers to come and empty them.
The new bins, which have been provided as part of a collaboration between Bridgend County Borough Council and Keep Wales Tidy, have also been given special names after pupils from local schools were asked to submit their ideas.
West Park Primary came up with the name ‘Ziggy’ for a bin which has been located at Rest Bay, while children from Corneli Primary chose ‘Solar Muncher’ for one sited at Griffin Park.
Afon y Felin Primary chose ‘Comet’ for the Eastern Promenade’s new bin, and Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr named a bin installed at the Esplanade ‘Y Bin Hudol’ which translates as ‘The Magic Bin’.
Finally, Newton Primary has selected ‘Solar Squish’ for a bin, which has been set up at West Drive.
The new bins are a bright and colourful way of encouraging visitors and residents alike to look after Porthcawl, and it’s great to see how local schools are educating children about waste and recycling initiatives.

A NEW PRINCE & PRINCESS FOR WALES
Apart from losing our Queen and gaining a King, we in Wales now have a new Prince of Wales. Prince Charles handed over the title to Prince William on his first day as King. He was himself created Prince of Wales by his mother at the Empire Games in Cardiff in 1959 and was invested ten years later at Caernarfon. Over the intervening period of more than 50 years, he built the brand visiting every corner of Wales, meeting many thousands of people, supporting our culture and language and using his Prince’s Trust to back young people. He also revived the post of Royal harpist – the first since the reign of Queen Victoria. It would appear that the people of Wales are in favour of the new Prince. A poll for ITV shows that 74 per cent think he will do a good job. William and Kate lived in Wales for three years on Anglesey when William was in the RAF. And they have already made their first official visit.
The name of Wales will be carried around the world embedded in their titles wherever they visit. They will help put Wales on the map and encourage visitors to this ancient land.

Student Support at Ty Enfys has launched their very first art project. After a three-year wait, we were delighted to invite the artist, Jenny Lambert, to school. A Cowbridge based artist known for her colourful landscape artwork; Jenny worked with a small group of budding artists to complete the project over two days.
The pupils involved were Grace Edwards, Alanna King, Katie Long, Kyle Furness, Evie Llewellyn, Kal-El Davies and Molly Waite. The standard of art produced by the pupils was remarkable, the talent and skills of the pupils shone for the duration of the project. It was a pleasure and a privilege to see them at work together.
Pupils commented, “I think the art project helped me because I like to be creative when I am struggling with my emotions. I love art and being part of the project made me feel happy.”
“I enjoyed conversation with Jenny about her career in art. It was nice to be creative and not have to worry about schoolwork for a while. I use art to help me when everything gets a bit too much.”
Creativity and art are valuable tools that enable us to manage our health and wellbeing and in Ty Enfys we are supportive of pupils who use this medium to their benefit. The aim of the project was to create a mural of PCS incorporating landmarks associated with the town. Thanks to the Co-op for supporting the project and to Jenny for her time, passion and dedication and for sticking with us as we tried to organise the project throughout the pandemic.

PORTHCAWL LIONS
As a result of the successful carboot sales this summer, Porthcawl Lions were able to thank Pyle Rugby Club for hosting the events by presenting them with a cheque. The Elvis Festival included a fun quiz, organised by Porthcawl Lions, with the help of several participating shops, all of which we’d like to thank. Now winter is making its presence felt and Firework Night is a major marker for November. Although in Porthcawl we are familiar with beautiful displays of fireworks during the summer, courtesy of the Hi Tide, Guy Fawkes’ unsuccessful attempt to control explosives is replicated by many households around November 5th. You may be surprised to know that the sparklers we merrily wave burn at around 15 times the temperature of a boiling kettle.
Porthcawl Lions’ Christmas Grotto will take place next to the Museum, in John Street on four Saturdays leading up to Christmas – 26th November, 3rd December, 10th December and 17th December from 11am- 4pm. For just £5 per child Father Christmas will provide a great value gift, that children can choose from the range available. Hopefully this will be a fun and affordable introduction to the Christmas spirit for many families.

PORTHCAWL NCI REPORT
It seems like a long time since we had the summer sun as the weather and light changes quickly. The watchtower is now quieter with a lot less people using the beaches and waters. However, depending on the wind and tides, we still have kite and wind surfers, kayakers, surfers, paddle boarders, open water swimmers plus small craft in and out of the marina. After a thorough application process, we had eleven new trainees start their training one evening a week, learning all aspects of the NCI watchkeepers role. Having completed eight theory sessions, the trainees were rostered at the beginning of November to start their practical training in the tower. They are rostered with a mentor to continue the training accompanied by a qualified watchkeeper rostered to help run the watch.
Due to the sunrise and sunset changing and the clocks going back at the end of October, the watchtower opening and closing times are changing. We are reducing the time the tower is open as the evenings slowly get darker earlier. By the end of November, the tower will be open from 8.30am to 4.00pm.

FLORENCE & THE OTHER TWO!
Local Historian Gwerfyl Gardner was the Guest Speaker at Bridgend Soroptimist club’s recent Supper meeting held at the Heronston Hotel Bridgend. Gwerfyl spoke in detail of the nursing skills provided to troops in the Crimean War from 18531856. The Senior Nursing Officer Florence Nightingale was assisted by two other pioneering nurses, Mary Seacole and Betsy Cadwaladr, both of whom came from the UK. Betsy Cadwaladr is buried in Abney Park Cemetery London but her name lives on in North Wales by way of the Betsy Cadwaladr National Health Trust.
Mary Seacole also returned to London and is buried at St Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Kensal Green.
Members and guest enjoyed a splendid Fish and Chip supper provided by the hotel.

PORTHCAWL JOY-RIDERS UP & RUNNING
We were delighted to be able to offer our inaugural rides to Newton Care Home, where a number of residents were able to enjoy a short, if blustery journey along the sea front towards Newton beach. Many more such journeys will follow and care homes throughout the area have been offered the opportunity to take advantage of this fantastic local facility.
If you are aware of any elderly or less abled residents who would benefit from a wind in your hair Trishaw experience, we would be delighted to hear from you. Over the coming months journeys will be extended and varied to include Trecco, Sandy and Rest Bays, so multiple journeys can be arranged to cover the entire glorious Porthcawl sea front.
We are still recruiting for cyclists (Trishaw pilots) who have some free time to help transport our guests. Find out more about Porthcawl JOY-riders by visiting our Facebook page. For more information about the Cycling
Without Age initiative please see the link below. Thinking about becoming involved in this exciting local project please contact Steve on 07791 101081 or via email smccreery@hotmail.co.uk. https://cyclingwithoutage.org.uk
THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES
Peace, give me peace! This is definitely a statement we are hearing a lot more these days. With all the issues of the world, people are longing for peace. The good news is that God wants to give us peace in three major areas of our life. Firstly, peace with God. The bible tells us that Jesus came to bring us back into relationship with God and there is great peace and a sense of wholeness from being in that relationship. We sense his smile over us, and he actually gives us - HIS peace. An internal, deep-seated rest. Secondly, peace with others. God can help us to do relationships well and therefore get along with people better. When we are at peace inside, we are generally happier and therefore more able to love, support and help others. Thirdly, peace with yourself. All of us have done things that lay on our conscience and take away inner peace, but God can take this away when we come into a relationship with him. All the above is possible from him who is above. That’s all we need to do is get into relationship with God.

TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE
Hello, you all know about our organisation, sending tools in kits to Africa so I thought I would take to the start of the process when collections arrive or people turn up with various items. We have a garage where all items arriving at our facility are sorted. It is really a recycling centre. The first operation is to sort all the paper, cardboard and plastic, these items are stored for council recycling collection days. Wood is stored for our woodburning stove used during the winter months.
Metal items that are not required for the kits, broken and worn out tools are stored before being taken for scrap, all proceeds are recycled back to the workshop for the purchase of consumables. Usable garden tools, screws, brackets and any other suitable items are stored for one of our sale days.
What is left should be tools that can be refurbished; these are relocated in designated bins in the workshop ready to be selected for one of our kits. Over the last fourteen years we have sent over 20,000 tools to Africa, can you imagine the amount of recycling this has generated.
For tool donations please contact John Hanson 01656 786367. David Cook Workshop Manager

THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD: CLARA BOW
Clara Bow was born into poverty in Brooklyn on 29 July 1905. Her father was an alcoholic while her mother suffered from severe mental health problems; she died in an asylum when Clara was a teenager.
Just before her mother’s death, Clara entered an acting competition. One of the prizes was a small part in a movie. Clara won that competition and was so impressive in the small part that she won further roles, and a contract in the newly-developing Hollywood.
Clara’s great ‘skill’ was to cry on demand. She later said that she only had to think of her home life and it reduced her to tears. She became the leading star of the silent era and made the transition into talkies.
In total, Clara made 46 silent films and 11 talkies. However, the strain of Hollywood and her bohemian lifestyle meant that she retired from movies in 1933 to live on a ranch in Nevada.
Must see Clara Bow movie: It, 1927, a movie that made Clara the leading symbol of the Roaring Twenties.

MAYOR’S CHARITY
Cllr Mark Chegwen, the Mayor of Porthcawl, recently paid a visit to Porthcawl Museum to accept a cheque for this year’s Mayor’s charity fund.
Porthcawl
Museum runs its popular coffee mornings throughout the year, the proceeds of which help support the volunteer-run museum. However, each year one of the coffee mornings is held to support the mayor’s charity fund and all money raised at the event is passed on to the charity fund.
This year the coffee morning took place on July 1 and raised a total of £233 towards the Mayor’s charity fund.
a guided tour of the museum’s latest exhibitions, Mark received the cheque from museum chairman, Paul Joseph. The Mayor commented that the museum is a vital part of the town’s community and thanked all of its volunteers for their support.
said he was looking forward to the Victorian
event being planned by the museum and others, which is to be held on Saturday 3 December.

RADIO COMES TO PORTHCAWL
May 1920, Porthcawl was selected by the Marconi Company to connect with Cardiff Technical College in a demonstration of wireless telegraphy and telephony. Two light masts 72 feet high and about 350 apart were erected on the Green. By 1924, 2 valve wireless sets with batteries were being sold in the town. In December 1925 S.J. Bentley, 1 Sand Bay Bungalows, Porthcawl was operating as an agent for ‘First Grade Wireless Fitments.’ All attachments were required which cost from 55/for loudspeakers, headphones 10/6d to batteries at 7/6d plus more items!
Of course, the BBC had been founded in October 1922, with its first broadcast 14th November 1922 from London’s Marconi Studio. As its popularity grew there is evidence that a few Porthcawlians indulged in this new trend.
Then in 1933 an advert by W.J. Coombes Radio Relays, Radio House, South Road, pronounced ‘Progressive Porthcawl. One of the first popular seaside resorts to adopt BROADCAST RELAY.’ This relayed weekly programmes to homes by wire in the same manner as the telephone at a total cost of 1/6d a week. Free installation, including loudspeaker. What is amazing is a reference is made to one day being able to possibly relay television along the same lines!

FINANCE
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
Well, here’s a name you’re not going to forget in a hurry, Kwasi Kwarteng! Why? He’s the one that put £400 per month on your average mortgage. His so called ‘mini budget’ or as some wisecrack journalist called The Kami Kwasi Budget cost him his job. As he fell on his sword and hit the ground so did the pound and the future of our economy.
They used to say a week in politics was a long time, more recently it was a day, but now an hour is a long time as you hoped our fortunes might change with a little tinkering around the edges of the country’s finances. When they said an adult had entered the room in the name of Jeremy Hunt, we felt things would settle as he began to correct the PM’s homework.
In the meantime, gilts and some pension funds were taking a hammering unless the Bank of England bails them out? Odd things gilts they always confuse clients, they hear that gilt yields are going up and think it’s a good thing but if you’re holding them the capital value collapses, most clients don’t know they have them, big thinks!
Conversely if you’re of an age to buy an annuity it’s good news. Ask us about it as it’s not the easiest subject to follow and needs an IFA to help.
When one person is crying another is laughing as savers rates will soar. ‘Money Box’, that wonderfully informative programme on Radio 4 with the humourless Paul Lewis, listeners were told they could get a five-year bond returning more than 5% interest, but they wouldn’t tell you where. Just great!
In all seriousness mortgage holders need to take immediate advice to refix their mortgage deals before rates get worse, if it’s not too late. Jeremy our resident mortgage advisor is available to take calls on 07971 172135. He can help you navigate the mortgage market and find you a new if it’s available. Borrowers with a fixed rate ending in the next twelve months might need to take a view and see if they can get out early and pay a penalty. Every case is different so make that call.
Then there’s my wonderfully laconic client who said ‘if it all goes horribly wrong I’m going to tell the Omnibusman’! Best of luck with that then.
the Russia Ukraine issue and you have a perfect storm and this one is huge.
At the time of writing this, the Government is in desperate trouble of its own making and will struggle to pull through at all unless a wind of massive fundamental change blows this way and fast.
Yes, it’s like going back to the 70s and 80s when we had to pull in our belts and make lots of sacrifices financially and yes getting on the housing ladder and staying there now seems a hark back to then. It remains to be seen how we will all deal with this new crisis over the coming weeks and months.
Going back to the present though, the mortgage market whilst still reeling from the current financial fallout and awaiting some good news, still offers rates for mortgages which can be a viable alternative to renting. At least with a mortgage, you will own the property – just like we eventually did back in 1979, with things getting better as time went on.
The difficulty people have right now, is guessing the market –shall I jump in now or shall I wait until rates start coming down?
As whole of market Advisers, we will know where the best rates are at any given time, so give us a call to see how we might help. 01656 782545 / 07768 418308

The law changed to allow parties to file for Divorce without citing blame as of 6th April 2022. It means that there is less acrimony and hostility. Whilst this may be frustrating for you, under the new rules, you can file on the online Divorce portal and need only state that your marriage has broken down irretrievably. Your husband will not be able to defend the Divorce. If you are the Applicant filing for Divorce, you can only recover your costs if it has been agreed with your spouse that he will contribute towards those costs. You may wish to discuss this with your husband in advance of filing your application for Divorce. If he refuses, those costs will fall on you.
Whilst the process is more straight forward, many of my clients feel in safer hands by instructing our firm to start the process alongside resolving their financial affairs. Our costs for dealing with the Divorce on a fixed fee basis are £600 inclusive of VAT and there is a Court fee of £593.00.

WHAT INITIAL STEPS SHOULD I TAKE FOLLOWING A DEATH?
The first step is for a doctor to issue a medical certificate showing the cause of death.
If someone dies in a hospital or a care home, the staff there should arrange this.
If someone dies suddenly or unexpectedly, you should contact their family doctor. You must also contact the police.
If the doctor can, they will issue a medical certificate showing the cause of death. Normally, a death must be registered within five days.
If the cause of death is unclear, the doctor will contact the coroner and will note this on the formal notice they give you. The coroner may arrange a postmortem, to find out more about the cause of death.
You should begin the funeral arrangements and will want to let immediate family and close friends know.
A relative normally registers the death and you can register the death at a register office. You will need to take the medical certificate showing the cause of death with you.
Try to find a copy of their will, as this should name the ‘executor(s)’ who will be responsible for looking after the financial and legal side of things. The executors are normally relatives, good friends or professional advisers such as the family solicitor.
You can also purchase a death certificate (and any additional copies you want).
In most parts of the country, you can use the government’s ‘Tell us once’ service so that you only have to provide details once after registering the death.
Funeral arrangements are usually made by the closest living relative (or someone acting on their behalf) or the executors dealing with the deceased’s estate.
You should be aware that the person who organises the funeral will be responsible for paying for it, though the costs can usually be recovered from the deceased’s assets. If possible, you should discuss this with the executors before committing yourself.
Although the deceased’s wishes are not binding, you should check their will to see if they left any instructions. You should also check to see whether they made any specific arrangements to pay for the funeral such as a funeral prepayment plan.

We held our enrolment night on 28th September at 7.30 and this was followed by a demonstration from our club tutor. Many of us then practiced making the Autumn Topiary creation. We were delighted to welcome some new members and catch up with familiar friends.
We have an exciting programme this year, which also marks the 60th anniversary of our club. All our meetings will be held at Gilgal hall on the first and 3rd Wednesday evenings of the month at 7 for 7.30 start. Visitors and members are welcome at all meetings and can enroll at future meetings if they missed enrolment night.
Autumn is well under way, but still time to plant tulips, shrubs, roses and bare root hedging before the very cold weather descends on us. Rake up those fallen leaves and if you haven’t a compost heap to put them on, how about putting them into black bags and letting them decompose during the winter months and make leaf mould. If you’re celebrating Bonfire Night with a bonfire in your garden or allotment please check for hedgehogs and wild life before lighting. Insulate your greenhouse, plant onions, shallots and garlic covering with fleece to protect. Sort out congested strawberry beds and lift dahlias after the first frost. Time to scrub your bird houses and feeders to reduce infection, we need to help our feathered friends as the winter approaches by filling up with goodies for them to enjoy. Laleston Gardening Club will be holding its Annual Quiz night and social evening on 14th November at 7.30pm. Members must book to attend, contact me Sue Ford. We will also be holding our Annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday 19th November at 10am - 12 noon. There will be crafts, cakes, hand made Christmas cards and more.

“The November days draw in like a noose and the garden seems to slowly implode, losing all the things that gave it worth. The only answer to this is to tend it like an ailing friend!” (Monty Don) poor old garden!
Keep up with the task of raking leaves. Did you know the leaves fall when cells break down in the layer between stalk and twig, a scar forms over the wound to protect the tree from infection, some trees can’t do this so leaves do not fall until the new ones are ready to push them off in the spring, which is why beech keep their russet leaves all winter!
Stake up top-heavy brassicas, draw up some soil round the base of the stem to prevent the wind rocking the plant and causing damage to the roots (and to keep them cosy of course).
Keep your eye out for pesky ‘winter annual’ weeds, these germinate in winter, in spring they get bigger, a real nuisance, the sooner you get the little blighters the better If a man is alone in the garden and speaks and there is no one to hear him, is he still wrong? Probably!
Early
Highlights in November include our Christmas Open evening on 9th with a demonstration by Delyth Price entitled “Christmas is coming.”
We have our 60th anniversary dinner at the Grove on 23rd with guest speaker Katherine Lee. On December 14th we will practice making a Christmas Swag and on 11th January we look forward to our long awaited Afternoon Tea with speaker Terry Walton, the radio gardener.

PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM
So, 3 years after the last one, we’re back - Let’s see if we can make this, the 57th Swim, the biggest and best event yet and come back with a bang!
The incredible Porthcawl RNLI is our headline charity this year – they, along with the many other local charities that will benefit from the event need support more than ever.
Due to the tidal conditions on Christmas Day the start time has been moved forward to 10.45am so please meet at the beach from 10am.
In keeping with the current cost of living challenges, this year’s theme is ‘waste not, want not’. We look forward to seeing the creative ways you incorporate this in your costumes – keep an eye out for how we’re demonstrating it with this year’s mugs. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all the details. Or visit our website christmasswim.org
