THE PORTHCAWL TRAIN 1972 Dear Editor, This photo was taken in Porthcawl, when the train was running (photo taken in 1972). Big day out from Cardiff for my son’s! Thought that it may be interesting history of Porthcawl. K Owen (formerly of Cardiff)
DEVELOPMENT AT COSY CORNER
PROPOSAL FOR NEW REPLACEMENT SCHOOL IN KENFIG HILL Dear Editor, We were told (in Seaside News issue 249 October 2020) in an article written by Cllr Huw David, that the proposed new school is being progressed following a recent site evaluation. Residents have received one letter to say they were undertaking a site evaluation. No communication when. No communication that this has been completed and no information regarding the outcome/decision. No consultation with residents. The surrounding street already experiences significant traffic increase. Near misses, parking in front of resident’s garages. Abuse if you ask them to move, declining to move. Obstructing the lane alongside the school. If you contact the police they advise they cant do anything as they advise the council have not adopted the road. Furthermore, extra pupils, teachers parents. The traffic is already horrendous. Where are all the cars going to park? Access is very poor. There is already a back up of traffic at the traffic lights in Kenfig Hill. They have not advised that they have factored this in the feasibility study? Have the council sat outside the school and see the carnage that we experience day in and day out. No.

Dear Editor, It has come to my attention that the on going development at Cosy Corner for a maritime centre being carried out by Andrew Scott has been aborted as funding has ceased. I am lead to believe that BCBC planning set a 4-year period and by their hesitating the period has passed. Surely blame has to be placed with someone and through his or her inability to do their job do they still deserve to be employed in the capacity they hold. I am sure when this information becomes news in with residents of Porthcawl there will be outrage. Please make my queries public in our local Seaside News and trust that any further developments proposed for Porthcawl to bring it back to an attractive place to visit will not suffer from this situation. David Lawrence, Porthcawl
NOTTAGE BUS STOP LIBRARY Dear Editor, During these challenging times some enterprising residents of Nottage have demonstrated the importance of our community and have organized life-enhancing facilities. The bus stop library is open 24/7 with an ever - changing selection of books and the gym classes, started on 6th April by the residents of Glynstell Road and held there daily at 11a.m. is open to all. Many congratulations and thanks to the folk responsible for these initiatives. Margaret Edwards Nottage, Porthcawl

There is also a park next to the school. I am surprised a child has not got knocked over yet. Residents can’t park in the street. Often we have had abuse from parents in the school. The school cant do anything about it apart from putting information in a news letter to parents. I’m all for better schools and increased places, however, common sense, communication, and active listening instead of the adoption of passive, tokenistic gestures. Mrs Knowles , Kenfig Hill

COST OF CANCER Well I never thought I’d be typing this as we are about to go into a lockdown here in Wales. It’s mad isn’t it to think that we’re November and we’re still dealing with COVID. Fingers crossed it’s a short sharp lockdown and hopefully this will help to bring back some sort of normality albeit slowly. We are now live on the Wonderful Payments platform so you can just donate an amount if you so wish to. They are hoping to have their other platform Wonderful.org up and running soon, keep an eye out on our Facebook page for details We are hoping to still do the Light for a life this year but I’m sure you’ll understand it will be a virtual event. The very kind Father Philip Masson is going to do a prayer for our loved ones on video. We’ve still got to finalise things but please do help us raise funds by downloading the sponsor form from our website. Please do keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Anyway, don’t forget to keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours, wear those masks and keep a social distance. The sooner we adhere to the rules the sooner we can get back to normal fundraising. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees
FACTORY FARMING Nearly 100 environmentalists, including the prime minister’s father, are calling on banks and the International Monetary Fund to stop investing in factory farming to cut the risk of future pandemics. In a letter to 22 leading financial institutions worldwide, the signatories warn that industrial livestock production increases the potential for further disease outbreaks, and contributes to dangerous antibiotic resistance. Industrial farming also undermines food security, and contributes to climate change, biodiversity loss, including the loss of pollinators, deforestation and water pollution, and the letter says. It was sent to banking giants as well as the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development. Experts from both the UN

and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have pinpointed animals or food of animal origin as a starting point for emerging diseases. In the past five years, meat and dairy companies worldwide received at least £370bn in backing from more than 2,500 investment firms, banks, and pension funds, according to a report this year by Feedback, a UK group lobbying for changes to the food system. High street banks provide billions in loans to the firms behind US chlorinated chicken, it said. Urging them to end their support for or funding of industrial livestock systems, the new letter says: “As the world seeks to ‘build back better’ after Covid-19, it is widely recognised that we need to rethink our relationship with the natural world and to treat it, and the creatures within it, with more respect. This will involve reshaping the way in which we feed ourselves.” Taken from the Independent online, 20/09/20 Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke
REFLECTIONS ON KAMMA On reading of someone’s misfortune, a thought pops up into your mind. But why that particular thought? It is a matter of kamma. All of our intentional actions, speech and thoughts in the past are called ‘old kamma’. The thought that arises spontaneously in the present is conditioned by that kamma. For example, if you know the person, and have thought about them kindly and spoken of them well in the past, then your first reaction might be, ‘Oh dear, I hope they recover soon.’ But perhaps you know this person, dislike them, and have spent a lot of time thinking about them with anger and contempt in your mind, and spoken about them with anger and contempt. In that case, at the moment of hearing about that person’s misfortune, it is unsurprising that the initial reaction is negative: ‘Serves them right!’ or ‘I hope they suffer!’. Your response to that initial reaction involves volition and constitutes new mental kamma. If the initial reaction is positive, it might lead to a wholesome train of thought devoted to the question, ‘How could I help that poor person? Thus good new kamma is created. If the reaction is negative and you dwell on it, taking pleasure in thoughts about the pain of the person you don’t like, then bad new kamma is created. However, if you recognise the initial thought as poisonous and abandon it, wholesome new kamma is created. In short, the results of our past actions of body, speech and mind are a given. The question is how we deal with those results. It is in the quality of our response that we create ourselves in this world, moment by moment. Ajahn Jayasaro

BRIDGEND MARKET CARVING OUT NEW FUTURE
FIGHT TO SAVE LLANTRISANT HOSPITAL’S A&E VINDICATED
NEWS the new toilets in Bridgend Market have been opened is welcome. The lack of public toilets in Bridgend has been an ongoing issue since BCBC closed the ones at the Rhiw and Derwen Road. I visited Bridgend market shortly before lockdown – when nobody knew what was coming down the track – and met traders who have worked hard with the town council and the borough to get the toilets installed. Although there will be a 30p charge to “spend a penny” I am sure many shoppers will just be glad that there will somewhere they can go at this end of town. Traders will be in charge of the cleaning and maintenance so the income from users will pay towards that. Bridgend market has a long history going back to mediaeval times and radical changes have been implemented in the past year to stimulate business for stallholders. The council and traders have worked together to take out a number of stalls and create a central square where lots of activities will take place – all designed to draw people into the market where many new businesses have been encouraged to open thanks to a more flexible charging regime.
THE current Covid crisis is having a knock-on effect not just on Princess of Wales hospital for obvious reasons but also on its Emergency Department which has been under intense pressure. We were told at a briefing from the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board that the temporary closure of the A&E department at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, because of a major outbreak of Covid, has meant ambulances ferrying sick and injured people to hospital are being diverted to either Bridgend or to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. I visited the A&E department in Bridgend myself not long before the lockdown when I saw the pressures it was under during normal times. So the campaign to stop the closure of the Royal Glamorgan’s A&E department – which flew in the face of the advice from medical and NHS professionals managing the hospital – has been vindicated. If they had won, there would be no A&E at Llantrisant and the pressure now being faced at POW would be permanent. Llantrisant deals with 60,000 patients a year but now half of them at least are finding their way to Bridgend and that’s on top of the 60,000 patients that POW was already dealing with.

PUTTING PORTHCAWL AT THE HEART OF 5G Porthcawl received some great news recently when it became one of the first areas in Wales and one of only 12 new locations across the UK to benefit from 5G wireless technology. As well as offering much faster mobile access, 5G is more responsive, provides greater capacity and enables thousands of devices within a small area to be connected at the same time. This offers fantastic opportunities for local businesses and householders, and ensures that Porthcawl is equipped and ready to benefit from the next generation of technological developments. The service, which is being provided by EE, complements the work of the Cardiff City Region Deal in developing a Digital Full Fibre Network. This is seeking to upgrade all public locations with high-grade connectivity – an essential component in attracting specific types of business into the area as well as benefitting residents in general. The challenges we have all faced this year has meant that digital communications have taken on an even more important role in our daily lives. With the arrival of 5G in Porthcawl, the community is ahead of the game in terms of connectivity and competitiveness, and I am looking forward to seeing this extended into further communities across Bridgend County Borough. BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE A B4E member looks at brexit from an economist’s point of view… People often claim that economists never agree. But in fact there are many topics on which most economists agree remarkably strongly. For example: the importance of trade. Over 200 years ago Adam Smith and David Ricardo explained the significance of specialisation and trade. We follow their principles when we import cars because other countries produce the vehicles we want, while we export financial services because we are better at this than other countries. However, nowadays, a small country prospering, by trading freely on equal terms with everyone else, only exists as a theoretical model in antiquated textbooks. Our world is dominated by trading blocs and large trading nations. This was a powerful argument for the Single European Market, a free trade area of nearly 500 million people - which we leaving. Whatever deal we leave with, it will inevitably mean higher costs and less trade. And this inevitably means lower incomes and declining living standards. One easily understood reason out of many, explaining why, overwhelmingly, most UK economists oppose brexit. …Next month, another B4E member gives a brexit view from their angle. Allison Felton bridgend@walesforeurope.org
Council calls on residents to Be Mighty, Recycle. And let’s get Wales to number one! Wales may be a small country, but when it comes to recycling, we punch way above our weight. We’re already the third best recyclers in the world, and now Bridgend County Borough Council is backing the Wales-wide movement to make us first. Over the past decade, recycling in Bridgend county borough has soared. We’re now recycling 67 percent of our waste, up from just 46 percent in 2010. But if we’re to help Wales reach the coveted top slot we need to do even more. The council’s deputy leader Hywel Williams said: “Recycling is now the norm in Bridgend county borough and most of us recycle every week. “We’re recycling our fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, tea bags and plate scrapings in our food caddies; recycling from every room in the home and recycling those tricky items such as empty aerosols.
“We should be proud of our recycling efforts, but we must keep up our good work. Let’s continue recycling everything we can from all around the home and help get Wales to number one.” From the end of March to the end of July in Bridgend county borough, there was a 17 percent increase in recycling collected from the home when compared to the same period last year. This includes over 700 extra tonnes of glass, 450 tonnes of food, 284 extra tonnes of cardboard and nearly 200 tonnes of plastic and cans. To learn more about the campaign visit www.walesrecycles.org.uk or for more details on recycling in Bridgend county borough visit the council website. NEWS NEW WAYS TO PROVIDE IMPORTANT SERVICES After more than 10 years of national austerity and trying to provide services with increasingly limited resources and funding, our attempts to work in closer partnership with town and community councils and other organisations has been well documented. Porthcawl Town Council has taken advantage of our Community Asset Transfer process to take on the management and operation of public toilets in John Street, and is refurbishing the facilities at Griffin Park. This approach has also paid off in Bridgend Indoor Market where the council has worked with stallholders and Bridgend Town Council to provide all-new public toilets with wheelchair access and baby-change facilities. With a 30p charge in place, which is reinvested into the upkeep of the facilities, the market traders are managing the day-today operation of the toilets while the council is undertaking the cleaning arrangements. This is another example of how we are seeking to work together in greater partnership, and to find new ways to provide important services. I’d also like to remind readers that as part of the council’s ongoing pandemic support for traders, parking is still free between 12noon-3pm at the John Street and Hillsboro car parks, and at the Rhiw in Bridgend where the first three hours are free. LISTENING TO OUR YOUNG PEOPLE We know that the coronavirus pandemic has had a big impact on our young people. Often young people’s voices are overlooked and so it was a great pleasure to speak to some of the members of Bridgend Youth Council during an online question and answer session. Some of the question topics included the Welsh Government’s approach to tackling the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s A Level results, UK and Welsh Government messaging, healthy eating, the Shared Prosperity Fund, pursuing a career in politics, environmental issues and young people’s mental health. The Welsh Government has taken action to mitigate the impact of coronavirus on our young people with new investments in training, apprenticeships, further and higher education and mental health services including more support through Meic, a helpline service for children and young people. The hour-long session went by very quickly and there were some really good questions. Everyone was able to raise the issues that they wished to discuss. It was very important to listen to what they had to say especially as the topics really meant something to them. It was a very enjoyable session and I look forward to taking part in future events. WHAT NEXT FOR COSY CORNER? News that Credu has appointed administrators and that their plans to establish a maritime centre are no longer going ahead comes as a massive disappointment to us all. A great deal of inaccurate criticism has been unfairly levelled at the council over what has always been a separate, independent project which we have supported, but not led on. Rather than continue to dwell upon that, I am more concerned with fixing the problem instead of fixing the blame. However, one persistent rumour I have heard is that Cosy Corner has already been earmarked for houses – this is completely not true. As an iconic seafront location, the council believes that Cosy Corner must continue to serve a large community use. We have already taken steps to protect it as a community asset, and are liaising with Welsh Government and Visit Wales on options that will replace the current vacated building site with something that is far more attractive and useful. Whatever this is, it will complement the Salt Lake regeneration which will deliver breakwater and eastern promenade improvements, a new transport interchange for the town, a new food store, residential and leisure developments, improved car parking and much more. Look out for more news soon. COUNCILLOR CHARLES SMITH Cabinet Member for Education and Regeneration Bridgend County Borough Council 01656 643643 www.bridgend.gov.uk 24 | seaside news
Way back in February 2020 ‘number 13’ in our Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) programme went live at the Porthcawl Practice of the Maes Glas Vets on West Road, Nottage. Unfortunately, the developing COVID situation at the time delayed the ‘launch photograph’. However, we are now pleased to say that in early September we finally got that photograph taken - meaning we can now officially thank Maes Glas Vets for their support in allowing the PAD to be installed on their practice building. In the photograph we have (left to right) myself, Practice Receptionist Pip Francis (who was instrumental in arranging the installation for us), Vet Dr Emily Skipp (holding the defibrillator) and our very own recently qualified Paramedic Rhys Morgan. This installation at Maes Glas Vets, along with the PAD at the Seagull Inn in Nottage (Sponsored by Brains Brewery and Welsh Hearts), makes 14 live and active 24/7 Public Access Defibrillators in and around Porthcawl. We are hoping to install the next PAD in the Cil-Parc area and are currently working on finalising its location. SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL PRIMARY SCHOOL
I can’t begin to tell you how much we have enjoyed our first half term back. Although certain routines have changed because of the pandemic, the important things have remained the same. Being back together with all our school friends feels extra special and we have learnt to appreciate the simple things in life such as playing, laughing and learning together! For the last two months, in addition to English and Maths, we have focussed heavily on Health and Wellbeing - particularly emotional literacy and mental health. Now more than ever it is important that everyone recognises his or her own self-worth and capabilities. We encourage everyone, whatever their age, to be aspirational, resilient and to break goals down into small steps so that we can all enjoy success. In coming back together again, it has been important to further nurture the relationship skills of negotiation, communication and friendship because positive relationships underpin wellbeing. We want everyone here to flourish so that we all feel happy and fulfilled. Happy children make highly effective learners! I hope you enjoy the photos of our younger children showing us how to work together and have fun during their topic ‘Our Wonderful World’. We are a small and extremely friendly primary school. If you are new to the area and looking for a local school, don’t hesitate to ring 01656 815660 for a chat. Stay safe everyone. Jo Rowley, Head Teacher
NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL We are all loving being back at school, we have been focusing on wonderful books, with some lovely activities. In Year 1 / Reception we have been reading the story ‘Room on the broom’. We have created lots of magical potions in our potion lab role play area, used our fine motor skills to thread spider’s webs and watched what happened in a bubbling cauldron experiment. It has been a very exciting 26 | seaside news
Email us your report to: info@seasidenews.co.uk couple of weeks in Year 2 ever since a parcel containing a baby star was delivered to the class! In the parcel was a letter asking the children to name and look after the baby star until it is ready to go back up to space. The children thought of their favourite names in groups and finally voted on the name ‘Blaze.’ In Literacy, we read the story ‘How to catch a star’ by Oliver Jeffers and have been learning about the features of instruction texts. They designed their own star catchers and will be writing instructions on how to catch a star. We have been learning about space, the first moon landing and star constellations. We experimented with different colour mixing techniques in art, the children created beautiful starry sky art pieces to make Blaze the star feel at home. We hope we have looked after the star well and that she will be sent back up to space soon. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see more of the exciting things that we do in school. At this time of year, we usually hold our Open Evening for prospective Year 7 pupils for the following academic year. With the current restrictions in place, we are unable to hold our evening in the usual way, and are thinking creatively about how we introduce our wonderful school to potential pupils and parents. We are in the process of compiling a Virtual Open Evening to capture a snapshot of the school which will be made available through our website – please look out for details. Year 12 Textiles students have been busy making maquettes, these are miniature garments, which they are making, using a variety of Textile techniques and materials. The title of the main project this year is ‘landscapes’ and pupils were asked to reflect their chosen landscape through their maquette making. Here are the winners for the Diwrnod Shwmae video competition; Llongyfarchiadau Mawr! Huge Congratulations to: Year 7 - Joseph Shingler and Seren Pope Year 8 - Adam Kelly Year 9 - Oliver Phillips and Ryan Timms Diolch also to Year 11 for helping us to choose the winners. It really was a tough competition, so well done to everyone who entered - we are very proud! Diolch yn fawr iawn. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

POEMS THE POPPY The poppy, such a simple flower, With petals fiery red. So pretty in the wheat field, Or in our flower bed. But then we learn of Flanders, Those poppies row on row, And all our fallen heroes Laid to rest below. The scarlet is their life blood, Shed to save our kind. The black the grief and heartache Of those they left behind. So now we wear our poppies, A symbol of our pride, In those courageous warriors Who died to save our side. Judy Dee, Porthcawl
Email us your poem info@seaside news.co.uk A WHISPER TO THE SOUL Quiet and silent lies the night – No sound can there be heard, No ticking clock, no whispered tones – Just the breathing of a soul. A heart gives life – it keeps us whole It’s the lifeblood of our lives, For without a breath, that we hold dear – Our lives would soon be spent. The night is still, no movement stirs An air that moves unseen, yet – Ghostly figures cross our paths And entice us far from home. Their spindly fingers weave and dance To show a lighted way, but Venture that way if you dare – Then your life will soon be lost. Lost in thought and lost in mind And maybe lost forever? But a beating heart will beat again – To find its own home. It’ll send a whisper to your soul – “Come back, come back to me, Back to your loved ones, safe and well – To the love of your family.” Rhian White, Porthcawl 28 | seaside news

THE THINGS CHILDREN SAY On the way to school We passed the cenotaph And saw the poppies Ready for Remembrance Sunday “My Bampi is one of those flowers!” My granddaughter said “Because when you die You come back as a flower Or an animal” “When you die... What do you want to be Nanny?” Adds my grandson “I haven’t really thought about it?” Say I “You like giraffes don’t you? If you were a giraffe... We could come and see you At Folly Farm in the holidays” Nanny Sue Waters, Porthcawl
THE NEW NORMAL I no longer stand on the doorstep I no longer hear the applause only the far away sounds of weariness. The banners and posters fade like the memories of good intension of caring and compassion left out in the falling rain. Promises, rewards, and recognition are words printed on empty paper platitudes and speeches that fill no spaces actions that have become inert. Is this the new normal where nothing changes not even us self comes creeping back insidious, unseen until we are the same. The new normal lays unborn in our laps This is not the change I asked for I asked for salvation without pain or sacrifice I asked for belief without the faith You ask too much of me to care for myself less and to care for others more. No this is not the new normal I asked for, I stood on the doorstep and I clapped for minutes is that not enough? Malcolm Price, Porthcawl
BEING OR DOING? They say we’re Human Beings, Which suggests we simply are, But as Human Doings We’ve really come quite far. Am I a Being or a Doing? I really hope I’m both. Being alive and doing well Would be my lifelong oath. By my creativity and lifestyle I cultivate that growth. Keep mind and body nourished, I’d hate to be a sloth. Judy Dee, Porthcawl (Inspired by Paul Casselle)

BRIDGEND SOROPTIMISTS
PORTHCAWL NCI
Bridgend Soroptimists continue to keep themselves busy during these challenging times. Fortnightly Zoom meetings are held ensuring members keep connected and offer support to each other. A total of nine beautiful blankets knitted by some of the ladies were presented to the Princess of Wales hospital recently. Patient Advisory Liaison Officer Debra Rumph received the blankets (see photo) and expressed her sincere gratitude to SI Bridgend. They will be provided for elderly patients. The club welcomed Megan Howells from the Wales Wildlife Trust to their most recent meeting. Megan spoke about conservation issues and also shared stories about the history of Parc Slip Aberkenfig which in 1800’s was a deep coal mine supporting the livelihoods of 2 local villages. A disaster in 1892 wiped out the facility and it remained derelict until restoration was started in the 1980’s when it was handed to the Wildlife Trust who undertook the creation of a wet grassland spectacle and wild flower meadows. Well worth a visit and refreshments available at the Visitor Centre on site. For more information on Soroptimists follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/BridgendSoroptimists or our website http://sigbi.org/bridgend-and-district. Eileen Bayley Publicity Officer
During September we dealt with 10 logged and 19 monitored incidents. 1215 vessel movements were logged and 327 hours watchkeeping were undertaken. We were delighted that, despite the Barcelona Ironman being cancelled, John Price, son of watchkeeper and roster officer Anne, still agreed to run a solo Ironman event on 3rd October and raise funds for Porthcawl NCI in the process. This was his seventh Ironman and the 2.4-mile swim was overseen by our duty watchkeepers who opened the station 3 hours early at 0700hrs for the event. This was followed by a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run in very challenging weather conditions. To date, this has raised £1660 with donations still coming in. A local businessman also pledged a further £1000, for which we are most grateful. You can still donate via the JustGiving page for Porthcawl NCI. We were grateful to receive a generous donation of £800.00 from the Porthcawl Horticultural Society. Thank you to their committee and the treasurer Frank Fulgoni. This donation will be used to upgrade our WiFi links. These operate our Coastal Safety CCTV cameras and the upgrade is necessary to improve operability. Nick Weedon Media Officer

PORTHCAWL LIONS CLUB
Where are living in strange times! I think one of the worst things about this time is the lack of relationship connection and the loneliness that brings. Loneliness can be a terrible thing and those who have experienced it know how bad it can be. I want to encourage all those who feel lonely by saying that Jesus wants to come close to you. Take this message as if from him and not merely from me. I guess it would be worth clarifying that Jesus is certainly alive and real today, and that He knows all about how you feel. Turn to Him and allow Him to help you in that area. There are many, many people who have been right where you are and have found rest, comfort and healing in knowing God. God is the one who makes our lives complete and that is certainly something that every person needs. No-one has it all figured out. A prayer to pray: Lord, I want to turn to you and know your presence in my life, which makes me whole. Help me to give it all over and find rest in you. Neil Harvey
By the time you read this our competition for the best GUY Fawkes in town will be finishing (ends on 1st Nov) and we hope to show the entries on our website, with results, on Guy Fawkes Night 5th. Do check porthcawllions.org.uk As for everybody our activities have been severely curtailed this year, but we are planning more no-contact or virtual events and are still managing to support key charities - KPC Youth, the Food Bank and breaks for young carers. We will also be helping the RBL Poppy Appeal, collecting in town If you have time to spare think about joining us - part of a million plus world organisation, but serving the community, fundraising for (especially) local causes, and enjoying each others company. SUSTAINABLE WALES ACTIVITIES
Before we were forced to stop in October we had a request from TFSR Cymru in Crickhowell for any spare tools we had for their Mwanza Workshop in Tanzania, see photo as they were very short of tools. TFSR have several ways of providing help, we refurbish tools for kits but their set up is different to ours, they send un-refurbished tools to their African workshop where they are refurbished by local people working in conjunction with our agents SIDO. We had a good sort out as we have surplus stock of many tool items and sewing machines, we were able to assemble over 1000 tools and several sewing machines, and these were collected on 13th October. We are planning to reorganising the storage racking in our workshop so the reduction of tools donated to Mwanza is a bonus, as we do not have to move so much stock. This article was written in October but when you read it in the November issue of Seaside News the covid situation may well have changed so if you have tools to donate please check with John that we are able to do so on, 01656 786367. PORTHCAWL U3A Well it’s taken a while but we are becoming more proficient with Zoom and felt brave enough to try a quiz, this month! It was a great success, not just because I won, but because it was such a fun way to spend a wet afternoon with friends I hadn’t seen for such a long time. I’ve since been told I didn’t win it was a tie, some confusion about whether the flag of St David’s is the same as the county flag of Cornwall! Apparently it’s not! I hope that by the time you read this all members will have received a newsletter, not as it was I’m afraid because normally more than half of it would be a timetable of meetings!

The Charity has been both busy and creative thanks to our wonderful volunteers working through these difficult Covid 19 times. As older members have shielded, younger people have taken their places, especially in SUSSED, our shop and trading arm. Open weekly 10am - 2pm. 4pm Saturdays. (5, James St., Porthcawl CF36 3BG.) Indeed, SUSSED has become an important supplier of washable cotton face masks from Porthcawl’s Cwtchable Creations, of home-baking ingredients, plastic-free toiletries and eco/fairtrade gifts. Also, the first three pieces from the charity’s writing project, ’Ein Milltir Sgwar / Our Square Mile’ will be published in December’s ‘New Welsh Review’. These are detailed looks at particular areas of Cardiff, Newport and Porthcawl, by writers Peter Finch, Dr Laura Wainwright and Robert Minhinnick. The first volume features five published authors and five newcomers. New contributions can be via any form of writing, photography or film. This is certainly an idea that has enthused many. PORTHCAWL ROTARY
Little did I know what I was taking on in July when Hugh handed me the badge of President of our Rotary club! Everything is so different. We meet each week via Zoom which is not ideal but it keeps us all in touch. We were hoping to do our usual Christmas Post this year, the Christmas Tree festival at All Saints Church, Carolcade round the streets and Charity Collections in John Street but have decided not to go ahead with any of them for the safety of everyone involved. All seemed possible until a few weeks ago that we were able to carry out our Christmas events but the latest surge in COVID 19
cases has ended this. We promise to do them next year! Meanwhile we continue to post our activities on our Facebook page - Porthcawl Rotary, on our website and on Porthcawl First Facebook page. Stay safe, Andrew Singer, President. andrewbsinger@icloud.com

HISTORY WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Yvonne Cormeau served the SOE as a wireless operator for the Wheelwright network under the code name Annette. She operated in southwestern France from 23 August 1943 until the liberation of France in September 1944. Yvonne was an unusual SOE agent in that she was a widow and mother. Wireless operators transmitted an average of twelve words per minute in Morse code. However, Yvonne averaged twenty words per minute. This meant she was a very talented “pianist”, SOE slang for wireless operators. Yvonne also worked as a courier, cycling 50 kilometres a day. While posing as a “district nurse” the Nazis stopped her at gunpoint at a roadblock. They accepted her false papers and her story that her wireless was an X-ray machine. After D-Day, Yvonne assisted in the cutting of power and telephone lines. In June 1944, she was shot in the leg while fleeing from a Nazi attack on Castelnau, but managed to rescue her wireless. She escaped and in September 1944 returned to Britain where she was reunited with her daughter. BYPASSING BRIDGEND In the mid 1920s, on summer weekends, the centre of Bridgend was congested with traffic and the narrow road through Laleston formed a bottleneck. In 1927, Glamorgan County Council included a Bridgend by-pass in their plans for modernizing the County’s roads. There was local opposition as it was seen as taking passing trade away from the town. The Western Mail, on April 26th 1929 noted: “The new road goes through Newbridge Fields, one of Bridgend’s most cherished beauty spots, but the inhabitants are prepared to sacrifice part of this sylvan scene for the sake of the new road, which will render the streets of the town less dangerous for pedestrians that they are now.” The opening, the week before Easter 1931, was performed by David Watts-Morgan, MP, Roads and Bridges Committee chairman. The party travelled from Coychurch along the new road to the new bridge across the Ogmore, named ‘Pont Ogwr’, and on to the outskirts of Laleston, where it joined the existing main road. The cost of the road was £133,250, the Ministry of Transport paying £97,000 and Glamorgan CC the rest. Following the opening the traders continued to bemoan the loss of passing trade. Ian Price
MR. HENRY STUDT AND PORTHCAWL
The photograph is of Henry Studt’s Carousel at Porthcawl in 1904, at the College Fields, which today is the land behind the Seabank Hotel. Henry was born on 30th July 1853 in Carmarthen. He was one of three boys and two girls born to Conrad and Catherine Studt. The place of birth of Conrad Studt is recorded as Frankfurt- Main. Conrad married Catherine, from Gloucester, and their children were born at various locations across South Wales, because Conrad was a travelling showman. In 1901 Henry, himself, is referred to as an ‘Amusement Caterer,’ yet, there is more to Henry Studt besides amusement rides. In the ‘Souvenir of Porthcawl’ booklet published in 1921 there is a whole page dedicated to him, as a result of his generosity. It reads: -‘The worshippers of All Saints Church have much for which to thank Mr. H. Studt. His unselfish generosity, spread over many years, has helped them to see their beautiful building raised to its present state of completeness.’ Throughout his life, Henry contributed thousands to hospitals too. ‘He went about doing good.’ Henry died on 25th April 1922 aged 68 years old. Studt’s Fun Fair, based in Swansea, still travels all around Wales. Ceri Joseph

LEGAL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: My husband and I have separated, but we do not want a divorce yet, how can we sort out finances? Answer: Couples often seek professional legal advice regarding divorce, finances and children matters without wishing to begin divorce proceedings right away. If this is the case, it is advisable to have a written document stating how you agree to handle your finances in the future. A ‘Deed of Separation’ can be useful in this situation. A Deed of Separation is a document that couples can use to record how they wish to divide their finances and responsibilities for child care. This can be used if they are married or cohabiting. Unfortunately, a Deed of Separation is not legally binding, meaning one spouse or partner can change their mind after the document is drafted. The only way finances can be completely sorted in a divorce is if you file a ‘Clean Break Order’. This Order is a financial settlement between yourself and your spouse that is approved by the Court. Once the Order is approved, a spouse is unable to make a claim against the other’s finances at any time after the divorce is finalised. Choosing to enter into a Deed of Separation however can give couples clarity on their financial situation in the future. Whilst they are not legally binding, when couples eventually decide to get divorced in the future, the Deed of Separation can be formalised by way of a Clean Break Order. Because of this, it is advisable for couples to seek independent legal advice regarding the preparation of such a document. Here at Melanie Lazarus and Co Solicitors, we have experience in drafting Deeds of Separation and Clean Break Orders. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBATE PROCESS
Losing a loved one can be a confusing and difficult time. Not only will you deal with grief, but often you are faced with dealing with their financial affairs. We would suggest you establish early on if the deceased left a Will, if so, who they appointed as the Executors of the Will. The Executor(s) are the people appointed to administer the estate, this will include making initial decisions such as registering the death and organising the funeral. If the deceased did not make a Will, then under the Rules of Intestacy there is a list of persons in propriety who are entitled to Administer the Estate and take care of these decision. Regardless of who is entitled to benefit from the estate, the Executors have a duty to notify all the financial institutions where the deceased held investments, accounts and policies of the death, update insurances especially in respect of the deceased property and notify all utility providers. The government’s useful Tell Us Once service can help with the process, information about this is provided to the person who registers the death. Depending on the value of the deceased assets it is likely that the Executors will need to apply for a Grant of Probate. This is a document that allows the Executor to take control of the deceased’s assets, pay their debts and begin the process of transferring the estate to those who are due to inherit. Whilst it is possible for the Executor to apply for Probate themselves, often lay people prefer to utilise a specialist probate solicitor to assist. Before you apply for a Grant of Probate, the Executors or solicitors appointed to assist, will gather information on the estate’s value, this information is then detailed on an Inheritance Tax form to HMRC - whether tax is due or not. There are a few other scenarios when it is advisable to instruct a solicitor to assist. For example, if the estate value is likely to cross the £325,000 inheritance tax threshold, it is worth hiring a probate specialist. It is also a good idea to seek help if assets are held in complex arrangements such as trusts, if there is no will, or if the will is contested. This time frame for obtaining the Grant of Probate depends on a number of factors, including how soon you receive the valuations and balances of the accounts, whether inheritance tax is payable, any mistakes made in forms, and how busy the Probate Registry office are at that time. Once Probate is granted the executors will begin to call in the funds, sell or transfer property, discharge any debts, account to HMRC in respect of any tax payable and then administer the estate according to the Will. This is not a quick process, but it is essential it is done correctly. THINGS TO CONSIDER IF YOU ARE GETTING MARRIED Getting married is a wonderful event that will change your life forever, but generally people assume that because they are married it gives them automatic rights in relation to their partner’s affairs. It quite often comes as a shock when they find out that, even though they are married and the law does recognise a lot of additional rights as a result, this does not cover every eventuality. If you had a will prior to your marriage it will automatically become void as the law assumes that you will want your new spouse to be a beneficiary of your estate. Unless you have made your will in contemplation of your marriage, it will become null and void. You should therefore consider what you would like to do with your estate and have a new will drawn up. This is especially important if you have children from a previous relationship, or other obligations which might not be met if you were to die and leave everything to your new spouse. You should consider whether you would like to add your new spouse to the title deeds of any pre-owned property, or whether you would prefer to be cautious and leave them a right of occupation instead. It is possible to leave your spouse the right to live in the property for their lifetime (or until earlier remarriage or co-habitation), and then leave the property to your children or other family members. Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are also useful for newlyweds who are possibly not yet sharing bank accounts. You may wish to consider a Lasting Power of Attorney for your new spouse to not only deal with your financial affairs but also any Health and Welfare Issues should anything happen to you. These are two important documents that are often overlooked. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

FINANCE HOW LATER-LIFE LENDING CAN HELP YOU It was interesting to see the articles written by the various lady Solicitors in this magazine last month, much of what was written being centred on divorce. It’s a fact that divorce is increasing especially among the over 60s and very often buying a partner out of a home causes all kinds of financial issues, not just legal ones. Indeed, these exist for anybody going through divorce, not just those later in life and we are experienced in such issues, assisting Clients in making financial arrangements for their lives ahead. At the time of writing we have three divorce cases that we are dealing with on a financial front and those Clients have the support they require. For younger people, a break-up can be different in the respect that time is on your side to start again. However, with later life Clients, time is shorter to get life back on track and we deal with more complex issues; this is something we have specialised in for many years. With the sheer number of flexible schemes now available to later life Clients, it is no longer the major headache it once was, when very little choice was available. These days, there is a plethora of excellent and flexible schemes offering a good range of options. As an example, we did a case recently for a couple both aged 68 years of age. They have decided to go their separate ways with the wife remaining at the property (valued at £280,000) in exchange for the husband receiving a good share of the couple’s savings and a lump sum of £95,000. Following our discussion
we agreed that later life borrowing be arranged on the property to pay the husband. The interest rate for the arrangement was fixed for life at just 2.85%, making the monthly interest payment £226, which was affordable from the wife’s pension income and of course, was a fair price for her being able to remain in the property for as long as she wished, for life even. That was worth more to her than anything else as she didn’t want to move, being close to her friends and in the place she’d made her own. For a private and informal discussion on this topic, please give us a call on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308. If appropriate, we can then get together, even outside normal office hours (to suit you) and take matters further. We look forward to assisting you however we can. Keri Harvey trading as Dragon Financial Services is an Appointed Representative of the On-Line Partnership Limited, which is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority Think carefully about securing other debts against your home. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH £100,000? Well it largely depends on the state of your current finances. Do you have young children, is there a mortgage? Are you retired or are you a broke student? Everyone will react differently and it’s all down to circumstances. Nevertheless you couldn’t just leave it in your current account or even deposit account as interest rates are virtually zero and could even go negative, yes negative interest rates! In effect you could be paying the bank to keep your money safe! It would be cheaper to keep it in a tin but then you have the insurance and theft risk! The first priority is to repay any expensive loans credit cards etc. Most lenders will charge you more than you can make on their money. Next consider how risk averse you are. Some would buy a house/flat to rent out so have a ready-made income. Before you do that consider the property market and when would you want your money back, do you want access to the capital, tenants can be troublesome and trash your property and you can’t even evict them these days!? A dead cert starting point would be a cash ISA at least you could get 2% on that for a while but there’s a snag, you can only invest £20,000 in any tax year so it will take you five years to invest so what about the remainder in the meantime? Gold is safe they say it’s a great hiding place from Covid, Brexit or Trump. It’s up 30% this year so well done those who hold it because the only way it’s going to go next is south maybe! You might be tempted to open an on-line stock broking account and start trading shares but you’ll need nerves of steel as the
markets can be very cruel. The FTSE 100 fell 33% in the spring and is still down 20% so good luck with that one then. How about the art market? Buy a wonderful painting so you can enjoy your money on the wall. Don’t forget the gallery commissions of 50% so you won’t be getting your money back anytime soon and there’s another commission when you sell! Don’t forget the cost of fitting burglar alarms and the soaring insurance premiums, and the worry when on holiday! What do you know about Bitcoin it’s all the rage or is it? There are plenty of casinos in Monte Carlo. Having money is a real nightmare. Go see a financial advisor!! CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB
LALESTON GARDENING CLUB
From the gardener’s point of view, November can be the worst month to be faced, nature is winding down, the air is cold, skies are grey reminding you that winter is very nearly here and with it will come the snow [The only fab thing about snow is it makes your garden look as good as your neighbours!] the gardener is winding down too with less to do outside except begin the process of putting the garden to bed for the winter. This involves a lot of cleaning of tools, greenhouses, pots and even the ends of stakes and canes before storing as nasty little pests often lurk there. Tie in long whippy shoots of climbers to prevent them being blown about and damaged in bad weather, check tree ties and stakes regularly to ensure the ties are not cutting into the trunk as it expands with growth [how cheerful – wind whipped clematis and strangled trees]. On a happier note it’s time to plant tulips, beautiful, they look lovely in pots and then can be moved around wherever you want a bit of colour. The flower for this month is the wonderful chrysanthemum, which symbolises cheerfulness and love that needs more! Chris Early
November is the month for planting tulip bulbs and winter bedding if you haven’t already got them in. Roses can be lightly pruned by shortening tall growth to prevent winter wind damage. Don’t forget to sweep up those autumn leaves, protect containers from winter frosts. Laleston Gardening Club remains closed, but behind the scenes the Committee remains active. Our ladies have been busy making pickles, chutneys, preserves and crafts as we usually do at this time of year. We would like to be able to hold an outdoor Christmas mini market and have Saturday 28th November in mind as the date. It will all depend on Government guidance at that time as to whether we can go ahead, but we have our fingers crossed. We intend it should be a ticket only event to strictly control numbers browsing at any one time. Our usual Grand Christmas Raffle will be a feature as will as our 2021 Calendar. Watch our Facebook page for up to date information, please feel free join in the friendly communication and please Stay Safe everyone. Susan Ford

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK I missed out again on the Queen’s birthday honours! I thought Sir Stag Marks had a good ring to it. Still, maybe next year’s list? I was actually invited to Buckingham Palace some years ago, but never got to meet Her Majesty as she was on the throne at the time. On a more serious note, being a former pro musician myself, I feel for everyone in the arts and entertainment business whose jobs are ruined by the pandemic – sadly, I think they will have to heed the government’s warning and find a new career until things change for the better. On the local music scene, there’s no stopping Kenfig Hill’s rock star Jayce Lewis. His new project, along with Burton C. Bell, is a band called Ascension of the Watchers and they have a new album out called “Apocrypha” and single “The End is Always the Beginning”. It’s good. Also, every Friday at 9.00pm, my old mate Andy Collins goes live on his Facebook site. The one-time Karrot and The Story’s member, who toured with Elton John, is a real talent so check out his album “Right Here, Right Now” and his live stream – it’s brill. Keep your news coming. A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW
Much has been said and written lately concerning the arts, and how badly it has been affected by Covid-19, certainly as far as performing at live venues and exhibiting in cinemas and such places is concerned. Creative people – and I count myself as one – do what they do because they feel it is their vocation, and often they do it without too much thought of financial reward, that is not their main motivation. But in his column, Stag Marks rightly refers to the arts and entertainment business, because that is what it is. There may be a clamouring for government subsidy to keep the arts alive, though this is frankly unrealistic, and besides, do creative people really want to be told by their paymasters what they should be creating? Meanwhile, my own documentary film is still in production, although a tightening of restrictions in the coming weeks could bring it to a halt again, and it is very much affected by the big question mark that hangs over the future. SPORT REST BAY LIFEGUARD CLUB OUR VOLUNTARY PATROLS
With both competitions and training cancelled, we still wanted to get our members together (socially distanced of course) at Rest Bay to keep an eye on beach users outside of RNLI patrol hours. Following discussions between the team it was felt that Rest Bay needed us at the crucial times before and after the RNLI patrol the beach from 10am-6pm. When we asked our members if anyone would be keen to do voluntary patrols, we had an incredible amount of interest, meaning we had to split into three teams: Yellow, Green and Black, each with a team leader and a deputy. Our aim was to cover peak weather and tide times from either 7:30am-10am or 6pm-8:30pm, especially when the tide was flooding, meaning the current was at its strongest and ‘the point’ became particularly dangerous. It was fantastic to see the juniors and masters enjoying the fundamentals of being in a lifeguard club, giving the public important safety advice about Rest Bay as they walk down the slipway and even carrying out important rescues, first aids and assists. Juniors brought their own first aid kits with gloves, masks, hand sanitiser (to ensure we were COVID-19 secure), and plasters. Some even brought whistles to call surfers across who had drifted toward the point. So, with our slipway covered with lifeguards and sanitised boards and rescue tubes, we were good to go. The more experienced team leaders, some even members of the RNLI, taught our younger members skills like using our radios to communicate with each other on the beach, what to do in a first aid scenario and making tannoy announcements to the public from our lifeguard station. We were also very grateful to have the help of the Rest Bay RWC and IRB which were able to patrol the point from the water, advising countless surfers of the dangers of the current and assisting swimmers, bodyboarders and surfers in difficulty. We also spent quieter times clearing the slipway of rocks which can cause a hazard at high tide, and carried out regular litter picks on every patrol. We’d also like to say a massive thank you to CGI who created our wonderful sign so the public knew when we were on duty, and for funding us to have the appropriate PPE to keep everyone safe. Over the course of nine weeks, this is what we achieved: -A total of 24 patrols, with 23 members -55 hours of patrolling -Over 100 preventative actions -15 water assists -14 first aids -5 rescues -2 missing children Meg McCloy Youth Captain Rest Bay Lifeguard Club 46 | seaside news

PORTHCAWL RUNNERS The easing of restrictions towards the end of the summer allowed the members of the club to actively take part in more inclusive activities to maintain fitness in small but well organized groups. The club still managed to motivate the members by providing training sessions, challenges, incentives and rewards whilst strictly adhering to government guidelines and using common sense to keep everyone safe. The latest couch to 5K session started up again having been put on hold during the earlier lockdown. We had a virtual 10k event during July in lieu of the cancelled Porthcawl 10K and a multi-event challenge in August (The Quintathlon). All this was building up to the end of the season when the club replaced the postponed Cardiff Half Marathon with our very own Porthcawl Half Marathon (with some even running a Virtual London Marathon on the same day). Bespoke medals designed by runners from the club were awarded to all finishers including the superb Porthcawl themed one pictured. Winter and the further tightening of restrictions will afford greater challenges for Porthcawl in the coming months but we are a resilient lot and the continuously growing membership shows that we take fitness, wellbeing, social interaction and friendship earnestly. Mental health and physical health must be taken seriously and we at Porthcawl Runners are continuously striving to achieve this during the challenging times ahead. Nick Middleton
PATROLS AND TRAINING COMING TO AN END Pen y Bont SLSC have had, all things considered, a really productive, fun and valuable summer on the beach. Our seniors have coordinated voluntary patrols either side of high tide each weekend from July through to August, in which several rescues have been bravely performed. When groups of 30 became allowed to train outdoors, we got nipper and junior training up and running on weekends, which almost everyone thoroughly enjoyed because, without the pressures of competitions, it was a chance to go back to basics, get fit again, enjoy the fresh air, and spend time with friends. With local lockdowns coming into force, our time on the beach was cut a little short but, luckily, pool training is on the cards again now that leisure centres are open. Hopefully, this means that we can continue to build up our fitness, keep in touch with teammates, and prepare for next season (which we dearly hope will take place). Despite the uncertainty that lies ahead, we hope that this season has provided everyone with good memories and a reinvigorated love for the sport and the club, to keep us going through the winter months.
