CLOSURE OF PUBLIC FOOTPATHS TO SKER BEACH

Dear Editor, On the 7th October 1916, Councillors from Penybont Rural District Council met at Sker to investigate the actions of Margam Estate, which had blocked three paths leading to Sker Beach from Penymynydd, Waun-y-Mer, and Parc Newydd. The council designated the routes as public pathways and instructed Margam Estates to remove the obstructions. The Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club recently re-developed the practice area opposite their clubhouse. The Golf Club planning application, reference (P/22/502/FUL), was sent to the Bridgend County Borough Planning Department in 2022. The planning application stated that the Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club owned the land. When, in fact, the Golf Club leases part of Kenfig Common from Kenfig Corporation Trust. Which they would have been aware of. Also, the application did not mention the construction of a steel structure set on a concrete base, which would have required planning consent, and omitted to state that a bridleway runs alongside the new development. (NO ACTION TAKEN) I understand recent discussions in the Bridgend County Borough Council propose to close this Public Bridleway, with several footpaths, which will further restrict public access across Kenfig Common, except for a select few. Keith Edger, Porthcawl

NEWTON CHURCH CHEQUE HANDOVER Dear Editor, Newton Church Summer Fayre - we were delighted to present a cheque for over £10,000 to Father Jonathan recently, for this year’s fayre . An unbelievable figure and many, many thanks to all who came and to all who helped us! Robbie Owen, Porthcawl

WASTE OF MONEY Dear Editor, I’ve just read Councillor Huw David’s piece in the October Issue. The leader of Bridgend Council appears to have little idea of what is happening in Porthcawl? He states a new bus facility will improve public transport to and from Porthcawl and will feature a covered station building, four separate bays, a kiosk and environmental enhancements -including a green roof, a rain garden, outdoor seating and associated highway improvements. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there were buses coming to this beautiful bus station! All the buses I used to catch have been stopped. Myself and friends now can’t go anywhere as there are no buses! We are stuck in our homes with no way of getting about. Isn’t there any common sense any more? Please use the money for the rain garden, outdoor seating etc to get back the bus services we used to have. We can’t get to our surgery, hospital, or shopping - it’s really bad. Please pay some attention to what is really going on and not waste money on things we don’t need. S Paget, Porthcawl

BRIDGEND COUNTY DRIVERS Dear Editor, Just a reminder to all drivers about the law for passing horse’s it’s pass wide, 2 meters if possible and reduce speed to 10mph. There are increasing numbers of deaths of horse’s and riders, so please can all drivers slow down when approaching and passing horses. Most drivers are very patient, but the road by Kenfig Nature Reserve is especially bad. Maybe if anyone from the highways department reads this they can see about some signage put up? Thank you to all you responsible drivers out there. I know there’s irresponsible horse riders out there as well as drivers. Let’s all try and accommodate each other and avoid a tragic accident. PROPERTY RENTS CONTINUE TO RISE AS SALE PRICES COOL OFF I think it is accurate to say that when considering the property market we categorise it into two simple parts, pre pandemic and post pandemic. In fact it is hard to see the resemblance in some aspects such as the average asking price and sale price compared to 2019. Although both of these have fallen over the last few months with the inevitable ‘correction’ which was highly anticipated, the 13 Bank of England base rate rises on the bounce did little more than normalise the housing market again. Interestingly though, according to the property website Rightmove.co.uk the average asking price in Wales in September increased by 1.1% compared to the previous month and by 0.1% when comparing to the same month last year which would suggest either Vendors & Estate Agents are starting to feel more confident in the market or they are just accepting that price reductions are back in fashion four weeks down the line. So whilst home movers continue to navigate their way through the market and make the commitment to buy or sell at any given time it is all starting to feel a bit normal again which will be a welcome for some for certain. However the same cannot be said for anyone who is currently renting or looking to rent. According to Homelet’s rental index for Wales the average new rental price is at an all time high and is continuing to rise. In September the average monthly rent was £852 (which includes studios and flats) which is an increase on the previous year of 7.3%. Furthermore the average renter is paying at least

1/3 of their gross salary on rent alone. With so many people competing for the same rental property it is more important than ever to ensure that Landlords are protected and have the most suitable tenant possible (now called Contract Holders) whilst it is just as imperative that the Contract Holder is also a right fit for the property which is why more and more Landlords are choosing reputable firms to reference check and manage their investments. Contract Holders should also be aware of the key things to look out for when considering a let such as the Landlords long term plan for the property. For instance if a Tenant is looking for a long term rental somewhere and the for the Landlord it is a stop gap for a year then the Tenant should consider if that is the right property for them. Some Contract Holders (Tenants) prefer when they are dealing directly with the Landlord whilst others find that intrusive and prefer the Letting Agent to be the point of contact so if the latter is the case then you should really only be looking at properties that are fully managed by the Agent. Over the coming months I will be reporting on the housing market in terms of Sales and Lettings with the aim to provide you with up to date and relevant information on all things related to the wonderful world of Estate Agency.

BOOKS BOOK OF THE MONTH: NO ONE SAW A THING by Andrea Mara No one saw it happen. You stand on a crowded tube platform in London. Your two little girls jump on the train ahead of you. As you try to join them, the doors slide shut and the train moves away, leaving you behind. Everyone is lying. By the time you get to the next stop, you’ve convinced yourself that everything will be fine. But you soon start to panic, because there aren’t two children waiting for you on the platform. There’s only one. Someone is to blame. Has your other daughter got lost? Been taken by a passing stranger? Or perhaps the culprit is closer to home than you think? No one is telling the truth, and the longer the search continues, the harder she will be to find...

A FORMER PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER, LIVES IN PORTHCAWL

BORN AND RAISED IN PORTHCAWL

The majestic and ancient forests of Ferentrae are under threat from a cruel and greedy prince. Join Tobias the Woodcarver and the mysterious Trelvans in this fast-moving adventure as they try to save the forests from destruction. Though the path to salvation is never easy, especially when the odds are so stacked against you, Tobias and his family and friends must strive for what they know to be righteous, to put the rightful individual onto the throne. A tale of bravery, friendship, and romance, you will be whisked into the beautifully dense world of Ferentrae, that is much like our own world and yet, in many ways, is like nothing you have ever seen. The ordinary becomes the extraordinary; what you once took for granted will be slipped from under your feet as you fall headfirst into the mystical world of the Trelvans. Her life changed when she met and married miner Evan Roberts and became part of the small close knit mining community in Cefn Cribbwr. The life of a miners wife was one of constant worry and hardship during the nineteenth century. Families and friends took care of each other. ARTS PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

We concluded our summer season with a wonderful morning at the Elvis festival at the High Tide. We closed the Owen Money Show with two songs, ‘American Trilogy’ and, with fantastic audience participation, ‘The Wonder of You’. Owen Money interviewed both our Chairman John and MD Alec in his inimitable style. Later, we performed more Elvis songs to an enthusiastic crowd, including some of the other Elvis Tribute acts that complimented us on our unique homage to ‘the King’. One commented, ‘When you sang Unchained Melody I cried’, we hope it was for a good reason? Sincere thanks go out to all the management of the High Tide for such a well-organised and enjoyable event and for inviting us to perform. Now is a perfect time for any of you men out there to come along for a sing. We are rehearsing our festive songs, many of which are known to all. Please drop in and see us rehearse on a Tuesday or Friday at Arlington Road Church at 7pm. You’ll be guaranteed a great welcome, without any pressure. Look out for our Christmas concert schedule, which we’ll publish soon, lots happening. contact@pothcawlmalechoir. co.uk or Ian Williams 07927 219544.

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Local band One Time Alive’s new album, ‘Stockholm’, is released on various online formats and Ed Rees and gang have a good-sounding product. Kenfig Hill musician Mal Roberts sent me some new material of his. I haven’t played it all yet, but it’s got a catchy commercial rock edge to it, and it’s really interesting stuff. I enjoyed new band All Mod Cons and their set of not often played covers. Top musician and singer Tina Graham has got a terrific voice. Check them out if you’re after an exciting night. Kerry Marlow called me to say that Porthcawl Town Xmas Festivities start at 11.00am on Saturday 2nd December. The lights will be turned on at 4.45pm at the bandstand, John Street, with Santa arriving by sleigh. There will be a carol sing-along, a grotto, live music, Porthcawl Choir and much more fun. I must say a big thank you to Kerry and his team who do a lot for our town and never get the just credit. I will be there – however, I’m not turning the lights on, they said I’m too expensive. See you there! Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Tina Graham (All Mods Cons) and Stag

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW Those of us who are old enough to remember the 1960s may well recall the trade test films that were shown in the daytime on BBC2 every Monday to Friday for the benefit of television engineers, intended to supplement the standard test card and music. Whenever I was home from school, I used to watch these films avidly, and I think they were largely responsible for my growing interest in documentary filmmaking, covering all manner of subjects. Mostly they were produced for some of our large industrial companies, and in my opinion, then as now, the best of them were made by BP. Some of them are now shown on YouTube, and once again I have been able to enjoy “The Home Made Car” (an especially clever piece of film-making which has not a single spoken word in it); “The Tide of Traffic”, telling us even then about the growing world problem of motor vehicles; “The Cattle Carters”, a wonderfully whimsical tale from the outback of Australia; and “The North Sea Quest” about the commencement of drilling for oil and gas in 1966. A wide range of subjects, told with true cinematic accomplishment. Anthony Hontoir, Downwood Films 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir

CARIAD AND COCHYN

REMEMBRANCE DAY

As nights are slowly drawing in, Morning’s gently touched with frost. Leaves blaze their autumn glory And summer is truly lost. Old friends return to my garden, So heart warming to see them again. I’d prepared a safe place to feed them And my efforts have not been in vain. A nook in the heart of the privet, I can view to my hearts content. The various seeds I’ve sprinkled there Has proved to be money well spent.

Please remember my name For I was another soul that war did claim We died in our millions during WWI The land we fought; the poppy begun Beneath our boots they grew as we fell Churned up earth by the enemy’s shell The poppy flourished amongst the dead A symbol that history was to forever thread Remember us, both past and present Heroes throughout time, old and adolescent Wear your poppy with our story in mind May our memory live on until the end of time Please remember my name For I was another soul that war did claim My dear mother wept when I never returned home May the pain of her loss forever be known. Tuesday Turner, Bridgend

They dart to and fro from the table Before the portly old pigeon gets wise. He’d eat all the food if you let him, It will disappear in front of your eyes. I whisper the name of each robin. In the hope they’ll respond to my call. I’ve christened them ‘Cariad’ and ‘Cochyn’, But they may not be old friends at all. Can I tell them apart from another? I’m not sure I can, truth be known. I know it’s the same ‘flaming pigeon’, By the time that I check they’ll have flown. Catherine Millard Payne, Bridgend

NEVER FORGET Aberfan, 21 October 1966 Were you there that day When God just looked away Cast his eyes aside Did not see the slide The black abyss brought from the ground Sat and wait to children’s sound With eyes cast to the side The devil roared and children cried Before this wall of mud did slide The silent cries of children you hear But when you look there’s no one near Calloused hands stained with tears Tear at the ground, pray on your knees Angry clouds look down from a teardrop sky To hear Mothers cry Where once life’s innocence was to be found Now lay beneath this muddy ground Silent cries of children never go away For in your heart they’ll always stay Silent screams of despaired Broken hearts beyond repair Forsaken children “Suffer little children to come unto me” But he was blind he did not see Bill Lenihan, Porthcawl

HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY I know it’s been a long time, Since you left this world of ours, Yet your face still looks so clear to me, As I look up to the stars. I wish that I could talk to you, It’s a telephone I need, So many questions in my head, A chat would be good indeed. I hope you get this message, Sent from me to you with love, In thought waves up to Heaven, My link to you above. To wish you Happy Birthday, To sing the song to you, To thank you for the many times, You sang it to me too. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

NOTHING TO DECLARE Don’t you recognise me now Only have just lost my accounts and fame But Did not loss my hope , my courage, my name But You have surely changed now But as I was I am surely the Same Learning still to come back to surface Needs my heart to tame It’s not easy to be always positive But I would try my best and that’s the Game I am what I am and I take it It’s no shame I am clear Nothing to declare No one to blame Dr Nadeem Iqbal

ODE TO THE SYCAMORE GAP TREE For many years you stood alone, Surveying the stars above your home. The last survivor of a wooded past, A single speck, a lonely mast, That marked the spot where once there was A forest that has now been lost. Alone there was upon the moor The last surviving Sycamore. Your sister trees could once be found, Growing around you from the ground. That wood was filled with life and songs Of birds and bees, now dead and gone. As over time, the saw, the axe Chopped and hacked the forest back Till all alone upon the moor, Stood one surviving Sycamore. With others gone, you did then gain An unsought modicum of fame, When strangers came and Robin Hood, Was filmed on land on which you stood. While walkers met and loves were made, Pictures taken and children played, You stood bereft upon the moor; A cold and lonely Sycamore. No Oak nor Ash nor Elm nor Pine Survived with you the test of time. No fellow trees to hear your call; Just you alone against the wall. Now even you are gone for good, And nothing grows where once you stood; For now upon that lonely moor, Lies the fallen Sycamore. Matthew Rolls, North Cornelly

CHRISTMAS – AGAIN? We’re surely too old for Christmas, Decorations, the glitz and the fun? Can’t cope with buying of presents,Sending cards to everyone? No more for us, cleaning and baking Or listening for Santa’s sleigh? No, we’re still sitting here by the fire, Yes, even on Christmas Day. But we still can remember the Child who was bornGod’s gift to us all on that Day; And how Mary and Joseph, on finding no room, Lay their Baby in the hay. And the star shone bright and the angels sang, And the shepherds found where He lay. Yes, Jesus, our Saviour, the Light of the World, Born for us on that first Christmas Day. We’ve no strength left for buying of gifts, Decorations or other array, But we will remember and join in the fun. Yes, enjoy on this new Christmas Day. Pauline Lewis, Pinehurst Care Home

It’s been another busy month at Cynffig. Pupils have visited the Seneydd and posed questions to Vaughan Gethin, whilst Steven Kinnock visited our school to talk to our young people about issues important to them. Year 8 pupils gained art inspiration from the natural world at Plantasia and pupils enjoyed the opportunity to understand different faiths at Swansea Synagogue. Our Seren pupils too have experienced different opportunities from talks on Oxford University, to peer to peer mentoring to support one another with their learning and wellbeing. This month on World Mental Health Day staff and pupils raised awareness by dressing in yellow and considering kindness #Hello Yellow. Shwmae Su’mae @ Cynffig was a great opportunity for us to give Welsh a go. Pupils enjoyed brecwast Bingo, a Treasure Hunt as well as Carioci Cymraeg. Congratulations to Lydia Stamp who is taking the Archery world by storm. She has gained the rank of Grandmaster Bowman - Outdoor Season, Master Bowman - Indoor Season, second place in the UK Masters and has been accepted for the Welsh Academy for the 2nd year running. NEWS PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL MAYORAL MESSAGE The last couple of months have been busy for Porthcawl Town Council. Our maintenance team have been working hard clearing, planting and painting. There have been negotiations around John Street Toilets, and of course last but not least we are preparing for this year’s Christmas Event. Next year, John Street Toilets will be 100 years old. Albeit a focal point and well-used facility within the town, public toilets bring with them a number of problems. The building itself is Grade II listed so when it comes to structural work bespoke materials, fixtures and fittings need to be used, which in itself is costly. Alongside this the building is sadly a victim of vandalism on a regular basis, which adds to the associated costs when trying to maintain and keep the toilets open. However, the Town Council clearly recognises the need to try and keep this facility open and the passion that the community have regarding the building, which became even more evident during the Covid Pandemic. As such the Town Council have agreed to work in close partnership with the Local Authority to develop a project managed schedule plan that will ensure that necessary improvements are made and the toilets can remain open. The opening hours of John Street Toilets have however been changed and they are now open 7 days a week between 10am and 4pm. You may also recall that PTC asked the community to vote for the People’s Budget of £20,000 to be spent within the Town. The voting is now closed and the two clear favourites were Christmas Lights and Play Equipment. Therefore, the Council have agreed that £10,000 would go towards a new piece of play equipment and the remaining £10,000 for the installation of additional Christmas lights. I would very much like to thank all those who took the time to participate and this process is something Council intend to carry out on a more regular basis. As such the Council will soon be looking at the budget for 2024/25 so, keep an eye on the Town Council website over the next few weeks as Council will be asking you to put forward your suggestions for the community and what you would like to see the Town Council concentrate on in the future. For those of you not on social media just drop a note into the Town Council offices and all suggestions will be considered but please remember that the Town Councils powers are limited but we are able to work in partnership. The new play equipment has been installed at Griffin Park and albeit there have been a couple of teething problems that the Council are still working on; it has generally been very well accepted. We are also at this moment in time waiting to hear about the confirmation date for the installation new tennis courts at Griffin Park. This year’s preparations for Christmas are underway and the Town Council are working with local volunteers to bring you not one but two events! On Saturday 2nd December there is a Victorian Themed event with the focus being on children. There will be lots going on in the Town Centre to entertain and bring Christmas excitement culminating in the Christmas Light Switch On! On Saturday the 9th December theme will be Musical Christmas entertainment throughout the day. Posters will be circulated shortly and keep an eye on the Town Council website for updates regarding all matters Town Council. CLLR J PRATT MAYOR Porthcawl Town Council

WELSH TOURISM JOBS UNDER THREAT A recent Visit Britain survey reveals the dire state of the tourism industry in Wales after 24 years of a Welsh Labour Government. The survey found that visitor numbers between 2019 and 2022 were down by a third and that visitor spending fell by 24 per cent – the equivalent of £124m. Although this period covers the Covid lockdowns, staycations surged when restrictions were lifted with a boom in bookings. These falls do not bode well for Welsh tourist operators from this year on because the industry is being hit by new rules which mean every holiday let must be occupied for at least 182 days a year in order to qualify for business rates instead of triple council tax. Owners say that reaching the target is difficult especially as some areas have little winter trade. A tourism levy is also being introduced which will add a fixed sum to each night’s stay. This will make Welsh holidays more expensive than those in other parts of the UK which do not have this levy. These changes will hit seaside resorts like Porthcawl hard. There will be a knock-on effect on pubs, restaurants and shops in tourist areas with consequential job losses. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

HAVE YOUR SAY Email: info@seasidenews.co.uk GIVE THE PEOPLE A SAY! I intend to stage a public meeting in November so that the people of Porthcawl can have their say on the plans coming forward from BCBC. I invited council leader Huw David and chief executive Mark Shephard to attend such a meeting, offering them a series of dates. But they have declined, saying they have engaged with local people and do not intend to attend or stage any further public meetings. I am intrigued by the use of the word “further” as, I believe no public meetings have been organised by the council for some years. The council has recently updated the Local Development Plan and also brought in a new Placemaking Plan, which sets out what will happen at Salt Lake and Sandy Bay in particular. Yes, the council has engaged in online consultations, but there has been no opportunity for residents to challenge the council’s cabinet members and chief officers face to face about the decisions that have been made. This is a democratic deficit that I hope to rectify, as I will invite them again. Let’s see if they are brave enough to attend. Watch out for details of the meeting on my social media and from organisations like the Civic Trust. DR ALTAF HUSSAIN Regional Senedd Member

HIGH PRAISE FOR NEWTON PRIMARY It was great to see inspectors from Estyn highlighting all of the good work that is taking place at Newton Primary School in a recent report. The inspectors acknowledged a number of strengths, including the enthusiasm that the children have for learning, and the range of rich and varied learning experiences that the school provides to engage with and motivate pupils. The primary school was especially praised for providing initiatives that encourage pupils to become ambitious, confident and independent learners. In particular, the inspectors highlighted a programme called ‘Newton University’ which provides pupils from different year groups with opportunities to participate in planned activities that are not usually available within lessons. The report also commended the leadership of the school as well as the commitment of its staff in providing outstanding learning experiences, all while promoting a caring, inclusive community that ensures teachers, staff, pupils and families all feel valued and respected. Well done to all at Newton Primary for this well-deserved recognition of how the school is committed towards providing both a positive and engaging learning environment, and to ensuring that pupils have access to a wide range of opportunities which encourage them to explore and develop their talents. £12.8M PLANS FOR NEW SCHOOL AND ALLOTMENTS Work is continuing on plans to provide residents of Pyle and Kenfig Hill with a brand new primary school and a bespoke community allotment site – an investment into the area of more than £12.8m. The proposed new school will offer modern, state-of-the-art educational facilities designed to give pupils the very best start in life possible. It will be suitable for 420 students, and will also provide the community with a new 75-place nursery. Because its construction will require adjacent council-owned land that is currently being used unofficially as allotments, the plans also include the creation of a dedicated allotment site on the far side of the school. Each of the 26 planned new plots will feature new timber fencing, gated access, a hardstanding space complete with a new shed, a water butt, a chicken coop, and soil that has been guaranteed to meet specific standards. Meanwhile, the overall site will boast new security fencing, enhanced access, parking facilities and a pigeon loft. The council also wants to help the allotment holders to establish an official, constituted association so that the new site can be leased to them on a long-term basis. I hope to bring you more news on these exciting new plans very soon.

NEW TENNIS COURTS FOR GRIFFIN PARK Two all-new tennis courts are being installed at Griffin Park as part of the final phase of an overall £520,000 project. Designed to provide local communities with access to modern tennis facilities and encourage more people to take up the sport as a way of improving their health and wellbeing, Porthcawl’s new courts follow similar facilities that have already been provided at locations including Maesteg Welfare Park, Heol-Y-Cyw and Caedu Park in Ogmore Vale. The new tennis courts are being constructed close to Griffin Park Community Centre to ensure they will not be affected by other regeneration proposals for the area, which include doubling the size of Griffin Park and decommissioning the old tennis courts. Once constructed, the new courts will feature all-new surfacing, nets and fencing, improved gate and access systems, and freshly painted court markings. They are being installed as part of a partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council, Porthcawl Town Council and the Lawn Tennis Association. More than £191,000 is being invested into the Griffin Park phase of the project, which is expected to take around seven weeks to complete. Some final painting, including the new court markings, will be carried out in time for spring 2024. FRIENDS OF MONZE ( ZAMBIA)

Friends of Monze ( registered charity No.1154762) has so far built 15 schools in rural villages of the Monze region. Children attend school for a ‘shift ‘ rather than a whole day in order to share the teachers, assistants and facilities. Other activities after lessons are encouraged to keep children around the school these include clubs, sports especially football, and gardening. Gardens have been developed following the Permaculture theory. Several members of our Zambian partner charity have been trained in Permaculture and can encourage and advise as needed. Permaculture is gardening in a sustainable, self sufficient, zero waste manner that works with nature. Native plants are grown for food, medicine, shade, soil retention ,to increase soil fertility but also suitable for weather conditions. Children learn about caring for the environment, conserving water and producing varying crops throughout the year. Children are able to eat the fruit, nuts and vegetables to supplement their diet and produce can also be sold to help fund volunteer (unpaid) teachers. Gardens are fertilised successfully with animal waste and home-made fertiliser called ‘Bokashi’ that is made by bacterial fermentation, rather than decomposing on a compost heap which takes a long time. Belinda Green Autumn is ‘the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ – and also of Fungi! On October 7th Kenfig hosted UK Fungus Day, with exhibits of the many species to be found on the reserve, and wellattended guided walks by the warden and local experts. Many examples were found , including Sulphur Knight, a striking bright yellow fungus which smells strongly of gas. The Farmer’s Markets and Craft fairs continue to go from strength to strength. On November 19th and December 17th there will be special Christmas events combining the Craft Fair and Farmer’s Market, with Santa in attendance. The solar panels have now been installed, and have already reduced the Centre’s electricity bill to almost zero. Work on the new fence is progressing. There will be numerous gates and stiles in the fence where it crosses a footpath or bridleway, ensuring continued free access to the dunes. The income from car parking charges has enabled the Trust to progress with the purchase of a much needed 4 wheel drive vehicle for the warden, and a new flail mower with a facility to collect the cuttings, which is essential for the proper management of grassland areas on the reserve. 34 | seaside news

WHAT IS THE CHURCH? Understanding what the church is, is very important. Before I became a Christian I thought the church was the local church building where people went to on a Sunday morning. When I became a Christian however, and spent time studying the bible, I soon realised that the church was not the building at all. The word church in Greek is ekklesia, which actually means to be called out. The word ekklesia also means to congregate. So it means to be called out and called together. What is really interesting about this word church is that it can actually be applied to any group of people in the world that come together for a common purpose. Rugby is a very popular sport in the U.K. and when there are big games on (like the current World Cup) you can literally get thousands of people coming together to watch the game. Now, in it’s basic meaning it could be said that this is church for those people. However, when the word is used in the bible, and in relation with God, it means to be called out of darkness. Obviously that takes on a different meaning all together. Jesus is calling us out of darkness, to himself, as he is the light of the world. A message we all so need to hear at these tunes! FEATURES PORTHCAWL U3A

The range of groups available to Porthcawl u3a members has been expanding and there is now a ceramics group meeting on Tuesday mornings. The ‘self help’ approach within the group has proved to be very successful and a lot of creative handbuilding projects are well under way. This new group adds to the existing art related groups including crafts and painting. There is also another fairly new group called ‘Understanding modern art’. Twenty-seven members went on a trip to St Fagan’s on the day of Storm Agnes! Despite some concern about what the weather would bring, the rain held off and an enjoyable day was had by all. Even though this local venue of Welsh culture and history is very popular and many members had visited it before, the company of other group members ensured a fresh perspective and sociable experience. If you are interested in joining U3A you can try out a few sessions before making a decision. See the website: porthcawlu3a.org.uk contact: info@porthcawlu3a.org.uk or phone Gary on 01656 785691 for more information.

NEWTON WI The October meeting is traditionally celebrated as ‘Harvest Festival’ month. This we did in great style, with a delicious meal comprising of Sausage Mash, peas, choice of desert, tea or coffee, all prepared and cooked by our amazing President, with a little help from friends (the Committee). We sincerely thank them all. The official part of the meeting was then attended to, after which we entertained ourselves with Bingo and a Musical quiz, which turned out to be quite hilarious. There was also a fine display of Jewellery, craft and card ware, which sold very well. Thank you to all involved. It was a very busy evening, which I’m sure everyone enjoyed. We look forward to Shirley’s Monthly Lunch. Last month we were privileged to be joined by a member of the Glamorgan Federation Committee, Mrs Wendy Knight. Wendy who had cycled from Swansea on her trusty bike, was responsible for passing on the Centenary Baton of Friendship to all WI’s in Glamorgan, so to share this moment with us, Sker, Mynydd Cynffig and Porthcawl WI’s joined us for lunch. Thanks to everyone involved, it was a great success. M Freeman

PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD

MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI

October was a busy month. The Rev Clive Williams was our speaker and helped us understand the true meaning of the harvest festival. In celebration members collected food to donate to our local community. Before the meeting closed a much loved member was presented with a floral tribute to acknowledge her dedication and commitment for 30 years. To round off the busy month members attended a fashion show and a buffet in the refurbished Plaza in Port Talbot. Our November speaker will be Mr John Sheen with the intriguing title of Christmas Claters. A reminder that Christmas is not far away! A carol concert is to be held in All Saints Church hosted by our guild but organised by West Wales Federation with other guilds invited. Prior to that a wreath will be laid in tribute of Remembrance Sunday by one of our members. Our members enjoy time together and by poplar demand meet up monthly for a coffee and again for a luncheon. We’re a friendly group of ladies so if you need more company …why not consider joining us. Pat Ladlow

We were in the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill, usual time 2 pm to 4pm weather dry and we were talking and laughing as normal. We had a talk from the Dogs Trust a lovely lady who fetched her little gold coloured spaniel with her, we were entertained by her antics (the dog I mean) and we were surprised by how much the Dogs Trust do from rescuing dogs to training dogs and helping owners to do the best for their animals. Next month our speaker is from the Community Police we are looking forward to it. We discussed WI business and laid plans for Christmas it will soon be here and we want to make it as special as possible for our members. Our clubs are on going and enjoyed by all. If you would like to spend a couple of hours each month having a laugh and meeting new and old friends with a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits pop in we would love to meet you. FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

Hello all, We are busy making kits, two sizes for bricklaying, one for building, one for electrical wiring, one for carpentry, one for beehive making and one for electrical and solar installation for Malawi. Tools for these kits are always required but we can only accept good tools, we cannot accept any other items that we cannot use in our kits. We had a visit from Ben at head office on 31st October to explain the changes within the charity, there will be less kits sent as the training programme is being extended from one year to two years to ensure local businesses get better support but we will be sending refurbished tools to head office for them to build required kits. We are having a sale at Trinity Church on 25th November and a sale in James Street on 2nd December, a good chance to pick up some bargains. We are looking for someone to take on the roll of sorting haberdashery items and putting them into kits to send with sewing machines that we are still collecting and sending to Africa, the person will need some storage space for collected items. Contact John 01656 786367 for tool donations. David Cook (Workshop manager)

LOCAL STUDENTS FROM PORTHCAWL HELP IN FILMMAKING Highlighting the threat to coffee from the climate emergency. Sustainable Wales, involved students in filmmaking, recently for our ‘Coffee and Climate’. The film’s aim to draw attention to the threat climate change is making to the coffee producers now and is likely to make to us all, as up to half the world’s land used to produce coffee could become unusable! Thus, also a direct threat to business and all Porthcawl’s coffee bars! (See pics of many of our Town’s coffee bars) Coffee is not the only food under threat from extreme weather. The film also advocates buying Fairtrade brands, which provide a minimum price, an extra premium to support and maintain the farmer’s livelihoods, helping them adapt and tackle climate change. It is also a challenge to big business and wealthy countries that have produced the problem to get to grips to reduce these emissions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjl1hY98mb8

PORTHCAWL LIONS Most of the Christmas events are well under way. Santa will be in his Grotto in John Street on Saturdays during part of November and December and entrance will again be £5.00 to include a quality toy. The Boxing Day Fun Run of approximately 7km. starts and finishes at the Hi-Tide and participants are encouraged to pre register on line (details next month or on Facebook.) although it will be possible to register on the day. Entry fee is £8.00 (£6.00 for affiliated runners). Unfortunately the planned coffee morning at the Grove Golf Club on November 9th. has had to be cancelled but the club hopes to get really busy in 2024 and already there are plans for a concert in the Hi-Tide in March and there is hope that the Sunday car boot sales could return to Porthcawl in late spring. Of course the more manpower the club has the more it is able to do to help others in this time of need. If you think that you would like to know more about becoming either a member or a Lion Friend please contact Pauline on 01656 859505. She will be delighted to hear from you. JMC

PORTHCAWL NCI REPORT The summer season is now well and truly behind us, so the watches are not only quieter but getting shorter due to the clocks going back and the nights drawing in. Some of the watchkeepers training and mentor team are concentrating on passing on their knowledge and experience to the new recruits. There are currently ten trainees who are finishing off the last of the classroom theory sessions as well as being rostered for watches with a mentor and additional watchkeeper. Now the weather is much colder and wetter, we have had to stop the second-hand book sales that have taken place through the summer outside the station watchtower. Huge thank you to Watchkeeper Jackie and a team of helpers (watchkeepers and spouses) who have looked after the stall over many weekends, chatting to members of the public and explaining what we do, as well as selling lots of good books. Thank you to all the people who supported us by buying books, games and jigsaws. The sale of books has become a major part of the Porthcawl NCI stations funding, so it is very import it does well. Please look out for the books next spring! Laurence Bater – Media Officer

SKER WI The October meeting opened with the singing of Jerusalem followed by the WI business. Members were reminded of the fashion show by Samantha B on 23rd October at 7pm at St David’s Church Hall, Nottage. The show is open to the public with tickets available at the door. Our speaker for the evening was Joe Woodcock who gave an interesting insight into the life of the soldiers and the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service during WW1. Although not a nurse, she was dressed in the nurse’s uniform of the time and is part of the Durham Re-enactment Company. The competition was won by Heather Jenkins and the raffle by Maureen Jones. We closed by singing the Welsh National Anthem Pam Powell

THE MID GLAMORGAN SAVOYARDS PRESENT GILBERT & SULLIVAN’S ‘HMS PINAFORE’ Once again our ever popular Savoyards prepare to tread the boards of Porthcawl Pavilion with their 27th annual production. Possibly the best loved opera of G&S, this love story takes place on the deck of HMS Pinafore. Making such wicked fun of the old class system, Queen Victoria herself said she was not amused… But the audience was, and with magical melodies and devilishly funny lyrics, you will be too. Singers, actors and musicians get together from our community to raise money for local charities. Since the first production in 1994, over £75k has been raised. This year proceeds will go to Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice and the Sandville Self Help Foundation. Starts at 7.30pm. Tickets @ £15 can be obtained from Savoyard members or online from Porthcawl Pavilion

HISTORY A HOLLYWOOD MURDER: PART ONE At 7:30am on Thursday, 2 February 1922, Henry Peavey walked through the affluent neighbourhood of Westlake, Los Angeles towards a bungalow in the Alvarado Court Apartments. His destination was 404B South Alvarado Street, the home of his master and employer, movie director William Desmond Taylor (pictured). Peavey opened the door and screamed – at some point during the previous twelve hours someone had shot Taylor; the movie director was dead. Who murdered Taylor? Over time, a number of suspects emerged. They included Mabel Normand, the leading comedienne of the silent movie era; she called on Taylor that evening, and walked away minutes before it’s assumed the fatal shot was fired. Mary Miles Minter, a leading actress of the day; thirty years younger than Taylor, she was madly in love with him, a love he refused to return. Edward Sands, Taylor’s ex-valet who’d robbed him previously, forged his cheques, and wrecked his car. And Charlotte Shelby, Mary Miles Minter’s mother, a woman who also desired Taylor and controlled her daughter like a puppet. Who murdered William Desmond Taylor? More next time… Hannah Howe, author of Tula and Sunshine, novels set during the Golden Age of Hollywood. https://hannah-howe.com

THE DUTCH IN PORTHCAWL

In May 1940 Dutch Queen Wilhelmina sought refuge from the Nazis in Britain followed by 1,400 soldiers who ended up in Porthcawl. The Princess Irene Brigade, as it became known, first arrived in Porthcawl on June 11 whereupon they were moved to Dan-y-Graig Camp. Three days later a second group were bussed in by armed soldiers which anxious locals’ thought were captured Germans. Dutch officers and NCO’s were billeted at the Esplanade Hotel. Before long the men began to pick up English, often with the help of local girls at the Borza ice-cream parlour. (Cadwaladers today) One of three marriages that resulted was between Eirwen Jones, who worked at the Hotel, and Lieutenant Henry Hendriks on September 21, 1940, in St John the Baptist Church, in Newton, Porthcawl. A ten-strong team of Dutch engineers maintained their vehicles at Evans’ garage (Pavilion Court site today) sleeping above the garage with meals being brought in from the camp. Naturally, during the time there was also friction; often fights in pubs: Holland versus Wales. But a Delft blue plaque on a wall at St John’s Church, in Newton, recalls the goodwill engendered by the stay of the Dutch soldiers. It reads: “I was a stranger and ye took me in.” Ceri Joseph

THE A TO Z OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) It helps your body turn food into energy. It’s also key for the structure of brain cells. Legumes, like black beans and lentils, and seeds are go-to sources. Pork and whole grains are also good. Most people get enough thiamin from the foods they eat, but pregnant and breastfeeding women need a little more. People with diabetes tend to have low levels of it. People with diabetes tend to have low levels of it. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) You could get enough for the day from a good breakfast! It’s added to many fortified breads and grain products and also found naturally in eggs, asparagus and other green veggies, and milk. Your cells need it to work right, and it might help prevent migraines. (It gets its name from the Latin word “flavus” for yellow -- a lot of B2 will turn your pee a bright color.) Vitamin B3 (Niacin) This is a family of compounds that your body needs to turn food into energy and store it. It helps protect your skin and tissues, too, and may improve your cholesterol levels. Three ounces of canned tuna has nearly all you’ll need in a day. Or serve up some chicken, turkey, salmon, or other lean meats. You’re vegan? Eat crimini mushrooms, peanuts, and peanut butter. COME TO THE EDGE In times of difficulty, we are often told to take care to help us feel safe. I wonder what would happen if someone else told you to live on the edge? Would it be like this? What are you afraid of? Success, failure standing out or not fitting in? Who can help you friends, family, colleagues’ members of your social tribe? FINANCE MORTGAGE WORRIES AND NOWHERE TO GO? READ ON... Earlier this year, I mentioned that there were hundreds of thousands of mortgages all over the UK, including here in Wales, which were on an interest-only basis and which were coming to the end of their current scheme before Christmas. Since then, we all know what’s happened to interest rates and we now have a situation where many, many people need help but simply don’t know where to start or with whom to discuss the matter privately. The stress caused by financial difficulty like a new much higher interest rate on your mortgage payment can be huge and having someone to talk to really does make a difference. An experienced independent mortgage Adviser like us can be invaluable by offering support and by researching the whole market, where there are usually lenders that will seriously consider trying to help you move to a better rate if your own lender can’t or won’t do so. The High Street cannot offer you this facility although of course, you are not guaranteed a switch but at least you will have the option of seeing if it’s possible. This same principle goes for people who might be close to retirement but still have to have a mortgage. Age is not necessarily the problem it once was and as long as you meet various conditions, which many do, we may well be able to assist. Those with repayment mortgages also have seen payments shoot upwards, so again, let us take a look at the market for you, it costs nothing except your time, to find out. In conclusion the golden rule always is that you MUST talk to someone – don’t bury your head in the sand when help is available. We can speak with your current lender for you if you provide authority and this helps those who work as lenders often close before you get home and are able to call them or are unable to call them from workplace. Call us on 01656 782545 or 07768 418308 for an initial chat or to simply make an appointment, no charge for home visits and weekends can be arranged by request. All we ask is that you provide us with all relevant information – help us to help you.

INVESTING IN UNCERTAIN TIMES Current economic conditions present financial challenges but where challenge lies so does opportunity. Getting financial advice and making a long-term outlook is key to reaching your goals. Here is your three - step plan: 1. Get Financial Advice. Contact us for 1 hour’s free financial advice. Getting expert advice can help put your mind at ease, by taking the emotion out of investing and providing an objective view may be the best financial decision you ever make! 2. Have a long-term financial plan. Your money needs to be invested in the right place to recover in value and make a profit when markets go up. It’s important not selling an investment as a ‘knee jerk reaction’ to a fall in value. The key is to make a long-term investment plan and stick to it. Its time in the market, not timing the market that rewards investors. 3. Make sure your investments are diversified. It’s best to invest in a range of different places where your money has chance to grow, and to keep an emergency fund in cash but other investment types offer better growth potential and by spreading your money over different types of assets it’s possible to reduce risk. GARDENING CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

“How Sad would be November if we had no knowledge of Spring!”(Edwin Way Teale1953) Time for the big clean up, give all your tools and pots a scrub, grease and sharpen secateurs and shears before putting them to bed for the winter, bit boring but you will be glad you did in the spring! Planting tulips after other spring bulbs are in gives them a better chance of escaping the fungal disease Tulip Fire. Not many tulips return each year as they are happiest in their native Himalayas! Try “Darwin’s Hybrid” blooms for years! Plant broad beans now in deep module trays because they send out long roots quickly, when they are 5cm they can go out, nice for an early crop. The small size makes them more weather hardy. If they fail you can always plant more in February! Plant garlic now too. Are you addicted to garlic but still want people to talk to you? Chew some parsley first. We used to garnish so many things with parsley because it’s an antidote to poison. We put it on our guests’ food as a sign that, although our cooking might we awful, we weren’t trying to bump them off! Chris Early

Email your report info@seasidenews.co.uk entertaining and informative. We also have 2 more practice nights on 25th October and 8th November. We have plenty of opportunity to learn and master floristry skills in an enjoyable and friendly setting. Our Christmas dinner is on 6th December at the Grove and this completes our term until January. Many members will be attending the NAFAS area day in Brecon in November and more trips will be organised in the New Year. We are always delighted to welcome new members and visitors are also welcome at our meetings. You may enrol at any time throughout the year if you missed enrolment night. The subscription fee is £30 for the year and all meetings incur a £5 admission charge. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings of the month at Awel y Mor Centre at 7pm. Please check out our Facebook page and WhatsApp group for more information. Alison Thomas. Club Secretary (07581 048448)

PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY

Calling all who enjoy Christmas decorations and floral displays! Our Christmas open event is being held at the Stage Door in the Grand Pavilion on Wednesday 22nd November. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. It promises to be a fabulous evening full of Christmas cheer and entertainment. All floral displays will be raffled and lucky winners will have their seasonal house decorations sorted. A demonstration by Ruth Milton Jones in October proved 48 | seaside news

November is upon us and shorter days are here leading us into Winter. In the garden, when weather permits, there are always tidying jobs to do. Leaves to be swept and borders to be tidied. Prune fruit trees and prune back tall growth on your roses to prevent wind tearing them from the ground. For those who have grown veg, time to lift and store parsnips and artichokes. If you are tempted to sow a wild flower lawn now’s the time to sow. The low temperatures and thawing encourages germination. Sow on bare earth not into grass as it impedes growth. Still time to plant tulips too for a beautiful Spring. At Laleston Gardening Club we will be holding our Annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday, 11th at 10am. There will be stalls selling Christmas cards, cakes & bakes, crafts and Christmas gifts and of course our bumper Christmas Raffle. On the 13th we will be holding our annual quiz night, (places have to be booked). For more information see our Facebook page. Susan Ford

Surf life saving is a very diverse sport and can offer something to suit everyone! At Rest Bay we provide high quality surf life saving, swimming, ocean and beach training. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have lots of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch. Nippers are aged between 7-13. As a Nipper, your child will be taught surf safety, first aid, surf and beach sports such as wading, surf swimming, board paddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays.

Our Youth section is between the age of 13-18. During the summer months we train at Rest Bay beach, and also at Pyle Swimming pool throughout the year. Our focus is to teach our youth how to save lives. Lots of youth members also like to compete in regional, national and international competitions. Our youth section also train to become Lifeguards and carry out voluntary patrols as part of our training programme. Our aim is to provide the lifeguards of tomorrow with training to help keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying our wonderful beaches.

SPORT CONEY BEACH CLEAN

We don’t clean the beach to make it look pretty, we do it for the voiceless who live in the Ocean and who have no choice about what enters their environment. So, as we come into winter, we will still be on Coney trying to keep on top of the rubbish and prevent as much as possible from going into our piece of the Atlantic. So far this year we have removed 1460 kg of debris. Which is equivalent to one and a half great white sharks or 8 common dolphins. It would be great if you could join us to remove even more. Here are the dates for the rest of the year: November 12th 10am & November 26th at 10am; December 10th, 10am. Everyone is more than welcome. We provide pickers and bags so just bring yourself. Any clubs or groups who would like to organize individual beach cleans just holler. We meet at Grow & Grind Coffee, Hi Tide Car park. For more details check on our FB page and the Pantri Box in Porthcawl. Or contact us at: southwales@paulwatsonfoundation.uk Elkz, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL CHRISTMAS MORNING SWIM

This year sees the 58th Christmas Morning Swim in Porthcawl. Due to the tidal conditions on Christmas Day the start time has returned to its usual time of 11.45am so please meet at the beach from 10.45am. This year’s theme is ‘Pantomime’ so let your imaginations run wild - we love seeing all your costumes on the day! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for all the details. Or visit our website christmasswim.org See you in the beach! Lucy Jones

SURF REPORT

TIDES

The autumn surf season has seen a return to the wave generating weather patterns that Porthcawl surfers eagerly anticipate throughout the summer flat spells. Sunday Oct 10th in particular was a classic with Rest Bay providing non-stop waves and sunny skies from dawn till dusk, for the best Welsh impression of California you’re ever likely to see. Its great to see the local youngsters standing out from the crowds on any given day with Tom O Leary, Luca Owen, Coby John and Henry Munro as well as Summer Moore, Anna Rose Merchant and Ruby Lewis are all leading the charge from the under 18’s side of things. There’s also a whole squad of frothing groms fresh out of the WCSC grom club who have benefited hugely from Head Coach Sam Moore and his dedicated team, so plenty more future Welsh Champions in the making there also. The Porthcawl based Welsh Coast Surf Club (WCSC) is hosting the long-anticipated return of the Surfers Ball Fancy Dress Party at the Hi-Tide on Sat Nov 25th, and it’s great to see so much excitement already building. There’s a live band, DJ, prizes galore and tickets are available from the Hi Tide. No theme this year, so anything goes! Gary Lewis Facebook: Welsh Coast Surf Club
