THE NAME PORTHCAWL
HOW TO PRAY
Dear Editor, There is reference in the September Edition of the Seaside news related to the Name Porthcawl, where Cawl is taken as meaning soup, which I understand it is. However in this context it is not so, I read in the past, may be the distant past, that in the name Porthcawl, cawl is derived from Gaul. It sort of fits the point since Porth is entry/ exit point, not necessarily from the sea. It was the sea we could expect a long wait for the tide to make it to Porth Rhondda. I seem to recollect academics considered the bit of the name Cawl is derived from the word Gaul.. I am no academic but that sort of fits. It’s interesting that the Port was significant in the History of Porth y Gaul. K Thomas, Porthcawl
Dear Editor, In the September Seaside News, the article Through Christian Eyes cites a verse in the Hebrew Scriptures about prayer. There’s a verse in the Christian Greek Scriptures saying “This is how you should pray” (Matthew 6:9). Verse 9 continues:” Our Father in heaven, thy name be hallowed”. To hallow means to make holy. William Williams’ hymn Cwm Rhondda says “Guide me oh thou great Jehovah”, God’s name. Verse 10 follows: “thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in heaven”. When we pray this verse, we are praying for God’s government ruling over the earth. Verses 11, 12 and 13 are valuable, but Jesus put the sanctification of God’s name first, and then his heavenly government ruling over the earth. C Brown, Porthcawl

Dear Editor, Further to Mr N Fearnley’s comment regarding the ‘water breaker’ on Porthcawl seafront (August Seaside News) - if indeed this is simply to hold the water back as he suggests, wouldn’t it have made more sense (and less expense ) to use large boulders as on the seafront at Aberavon? There were 2 specimens and we named them Charlie and Harry after our grandsons. Not sure how common theses are in Wales, this is the first time we have found them in our garden in Laleston. Local history A NEW GOLF CLUB FOR PORTHCAWL
A hundred years ago on 1st October 1919 the Newton Nottage Golf Club was officially opened. A new club for the town. This new nine-hole golf club was for artisans. It was called the Newton Nottage Golf Club. The Royal Porthcawl GC helped in providing flag pins and hole cups “until the new ones arrive.” In the months previous to its opening the Newton Nottage Golf Club had attracted 90 members at an initial annual subscription of a guinea. It was decided that when a 100 people had joined the subscription would double to £2.2s. “To members and visitors to whom the course is not known we would explain that the first tee is at the seaward end of Mackworth Road and the course runs direct east of Newton Bay.’ The first green was at the top of the long valley alongside the railway. This was the line that serviced the Barry Sand and Gravel Works. Holes 3, 4 and 5 ran adjacent to Newton Beach. No 6 was behind Moorlands School, (Coop today) whilst 7,8, & 9 returned to behind Mackworth Road. In 1922 the club moved and reinvented itself as The Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. Ceri Joseph

BRIDGEND & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY
The first meeting of the 67th season of the Society took place on September 9th when Rowena Williams and Ian Price gave a talk on the local Jewish Community. Rowena talked about the history of Jews in Britain and specifically in Wales. She outlined the increase in the number of Jews settling in Wales in the late 19th and early 20th century in response to the business opportunities provided by the rapid growth in the general population through industrialization and the sharp rise in Jewish immigration in response to antiSemitism in Eastern Europe. The decline in heavy industries in the south Wales valleys resulted in the disappearance of thriving Jewish communities in a number of towns including Bridgend. Ian gave an account of four generations of the Jewish branch of his family, moving from East Prussia to Liverpool to Merthyr and thence to Bridgend, where his grandfather had been secretary of the local synagogue. The session concluded with tea, biscuits and lively conversation. The next meeting is at 7pm on October 8th in Carnegie House where Andrew Shell will be talking about progress at St John’s House, the mediaeval hospice on Newcastle Hill.
PORTHCAWL MUSEUM On Saturday the 31st August both volunteers, guests’ museum members and visitors enjoyed a remarkable day at the Museum. Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Outbreak of World War 2. In true wartime fashion. Following the official opening attended by guests, trustees and five WW2 Veterans, Father Phillip Masson held a moment of reflection after which Porthcawl Town Council Mayor, Councillor Graham Walter introduced each Veteran to those present. The guests were provided with refreshments, including a commemoratively decorated cake and veteran Mr. David Philpot MBE was asked to cut the first slice. The rest of day was given over to WW2 re-enactments, provided by enthusiastic volunteers and the Welsh Tommie’s Re-enactors group. Also included was a WW2 sing-along, a dig for victory, WW2 Vehicles, and a most imposing French Policeman, black market spiv and madam. Visitors witnessed local children being taken through the experience of an evacuee having to leave a town or city home to be taken in by a family located in the safer countryside. Other activities included a dramatic reconstruction of an air raid with its sights, sounds and aftermath.

Good News and Congratulations! This year, there is a most significant change in the way that the Welsh Government is recording the achievements of GCSE’s in schools. All published figures are based upon the first entry only and further or multiple entries do not count. The percentage of pupils achieving 5A*- C (Level 2) is a very credible 83%. ST CLARE’S SCHOOL
St Clare’s celebrated another year of excellent GCSE results that trumped the UK picture. A staggering 91.2% of grades achieved were 4+ (A*-C) versus the UK average of 67% and an impressive 43.5% of grades awarded were 7+ (A*/A) versus the UK average of 20.6%. Almost 25% of our GCSE grades were 8 or 9, the latter being the equivalent of an A** to show exceptional performance. 10.6% of entries were a grade 9 (A**) compared to 4.5% nationally; that’s almost one in every nine entries and more than double the UK average. A number of individual pupils excelled including Lucy Baynham and Theo Quantick. Ben Fodor, Amelia Jenkins, Carys Lock, Emily Smith and Kym Zhang also performed superbly well. On 6th September a group of Sixth Form textiles pupils and the Expressive Arts cluster staff members, Mrs Topham, Mrs Fender and Mrs Tucker attended the opening ceremony of the new Sue Ryder store on Caroline Street in Bridgend. Special guest David Emanuel who hails from Bridgend cut the ribbon to open the store at 10.30am and our pupils were privileged to spend some time with him. Fashion designer Mr Emanuel who is very knowledgeable with regards to the fashion and textile industry, spoke to our pupils and staff on career pathways. Mr Emanuel showed great interest in our pupils and their chosen subject choices. Mrs Topham who organised the community meet up wishes to thank the Store Manager Nicola Steele for her time spent with our pupils and staff. Brynteg School is excited to be collaborating and forging community links with the Sue Ryder store in Bridgend that will include a window display of sustainable reused and renewed fashion garments using pupils own themes. At Porthcawl Primary School we inspire our children to love learning. Classes start each topic with a COOL (Choosing Our Own Learning) Day where children are submerged in exciting new experiences and help chose the direction of their learning for that term. This month we thought we’d let you know what our Year 1 and 2 classes got up to! Our 5 and 6 year old ‘Woodland Warriors’ kicked off their topic in the local woods. They enjoyed an animal hunt, discovering hedgehogs, deer, owls and badgers. They used the magnifying glasses and binoculars they’d made to take a close look at all the spiders, worms and beetles. They loved making bows and arrows and woodland hats out of twigs and leaves they’d collected. They finished all this off with a well-deserved hot chocolate. William (aged 5) said, ‘This is the best day ever’. We are very proud of our small community based school. We have small classes, a nurturing approach and very high standards (we have been a Welsh Government Green Category school for the last four years). We have a few Nursery places left. YSGOL Y FERCH O’R SGÊR It’s been lovely to welcome our children and families back and to meet our new nursery children who are all settling in to ‘Mabon’ class well. The children have seen a number of visitors- Mr Coleman from the Religious Education School Initiative held a new beginnings assembly, Bridget Bee came to reward our year 3 class for their excellent ‘kerbcraft’ work last term and Dale, Ieuan and Lloyd have been holding rugby sessions with pupils from years 4 -6. The Menter, Urdd French, Spanish, rugby and netball clubs have all re-started & it’s great to see how well attended they are. As always we enjoy celebrating all of our school community’s achievement. This month we’d like to say a special well done to Caitlin for a remarkable act of kindness. During the summer holiday Caitlin had her long thick hair cut to donate to the Little Princess Trust. The trust accepts donations of real hair to provide wigs free of charge to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions. 26 | seaside news
CYNFFIG NEWS This month we have welcomed Year 6 pupils from our primary schools for a day of Spanish and Welsh culture and opened our doors to prospective parents and pupils during our Year 6 Open Day. Staff, governors family and friends proudly celebrated the achievements of our pupils at our Presentation Day and we welcomed back past pupil Ben Ffrancon Davies who spoke passionately about his learning journey at Cynffig to Oxford University and then into the world of publishing. In an act of democracy, all Cynffig pupils voted in our school elections to establish our School Parliament. Its departments including Teaching and learning, Eco committee and Pupil welfare ensure pupil’s views are at the heart of decision making at Cynffig. Congratulations also to the newly appointed senior team headed by Head Girl Leah Evans and Head Boy Todd Murray who were at the fore of our National Literacy Day celebrations. They read with Key Stage 3 pupils in our ‘Drop Everything and Read’ event where pupils and teachers took time to read for pleasure. Local news CHANGE IS ON THE WAY AT KENFIG Kenfig Nature Reserve is one of my favourite places. It’s somewhere you feel the stresses of life falling away as you walk through unspoilt sand dunes listening to the cry of the birds. But times are changing. BCBC is surrendering its lease on the reserve, which is owned by the Kenfig Corporation Trust, which dates back to mediaeval times. The council is now working with the trustees to find a suitable organisation with the resources and the expertise to take it over and move it on. The council recognises that the site needs better stewardship than it can afford. A national organisation with the necessary expertise and resources should be sought to ensure that this internationally important site can be appropriately managed. I am hoping to meet the trustees in the autumn to find out what is their plan. This is one of very few dune systems of such size and importance within Europe. It is home to the rare fen orchid, the carver bumblebee and Kenfig Pool regularly attracts wading birds, which in turn attract birdwatchers from all over the UK. PORTHCAWL TOWN BEACH SEA DEFENCE SCHEME Last month, it was a pleasure to attend the official opening of the new coastal sea defence at Porthcawl Town Beach. We can’t hide from climate change and the strengthened sea defences will reduce the risk of flooding and erosion from the sea to about 260 seafront properties providing reassurance to those residents and visitors to the town. The work has been possible thanks to Welsh Government funding, which has provided three quarters of the cost of the scheme with the remainder coming from Bridgend Council. It is good to see that what is there now is more visually attractive than before. The not so affectionately termed ‘tarmac beach’ divided opinion and was certainly a talking point. There was even a mention in dispatches on the BBC One programme, Coast. With the old sea defences coming to the end of their natural life, it was a good opportunity to construct and design a new flood defence scheme, which we now have. Indeed, the new strengthened sea defences will ensure that Porthcawl will remain a safe, viable and attractive place to live, work in and to visit and provide much stronger flood protection for years to come. ‘SIT AND CHAT’ BENCH IS A FABULOUS IDEA Bridgend County Borough Council received a recent request, which I was only too pleased to support. Jo Keen, an art teacher at Coleg Cymunedol Y Dderwen, approached the council about creating a ‘sit and chat’ bench in Griffin Park as a place where the community can come together. The bench has been renovated and painted in bright, friendly colours in a bid to help combat loneliness and social isolation, and help support people’s mental well-being. The bench looks fantastic and is being well-used, and I’d like to congratulate Jo on her efforts. Elsewhere, our annual budget consultation is ongoing, and you have until 3 November to take part and have your say. Despite saving £27m in the last four years alone, we still face huge shortfalls in funding, yet must set a balanced budget to meet our legal responsibilities. We want to reflect your views as much as possible, and taking part in the consultation really does make a difference. NEW INVESTMENT AND A BRIGHT FUTURE It’s been another busy month, and I was delighted to see that land details necessary for the construction of the £5.5m Cosy Corner maritime centre have been agreed. This community-driven project is set to complement the new marina, Jennings Building and harbour kiosk projects in Porthcawl, and a great deal of work has gone into assessing, supporting and facilitating the project. Bridgend County Borough Council has organised a 99-year lease to transfer the site over to the Credu Charity, and I’m looking forward to seeing the project progress. Down in Rest Bay, the new Watersport Centre is preparing to open its doors. I was lucky enough to see it all lit up at dusk recently, and it looked amazing. This is another development that is bound to become an iconic local landmark, and details should soon be announced confirming tenants, its grand opening and more. Elsewhere, the new £3m sea defences at the town beach have been officially opened by Lesley Griffiths, the Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, while footfall cameras have recorded a 36 per cent increase in visitors during the first few weeks of September alone. With further new developments still to come, Porthcawl’s future is bright indeed. HELP MAKE PORTHCAWL A PLASTIC-FREE TOWN In a move to help make Porthcawl a plastic-free town, Bridgend County Borough Council has teamed up with Porthcawl Town Council and Surfers Against Sewage to call on local businesses to stop using at least three plastic items. A community group called Plastic Free Porthcawl has been formed, and a dozen businesses have already signed up alongside Keeping Porthcawl Tidy and other volunteer groups who care about the local environment. Plastic straws, bottles, tops, cutlery, sachets, drinking cups, lids, bags and other on-the-go packaging are all among the biggest offenders when it comes to littering, and too many of them are damaging the planet. There is a real desire to champion this cause, and to make Porthcawl one of the first plastic-free communities in Wales. Bridgend County Borough Council is organising free workshops for Porthcawl businesses where they can discover more about the importance and benefits of reducing the use of polystyrene and plastics. We also want more businesses to sign up to the ‘Refill’ app, which shows where people can fill up reusable bottles with free tap water. It has been a busy summer supporting many of our wonderful local organisations at various events. I particularly enjoyed judging a Sandcastle competition on Coney Beach organised by Porthcawl Lions Club. The winners (pictured) were Joshua Burnett and his pals Ruby and Sonny Gould, and Joshua White – all from Porthcawl – well done! Other notable events included the Vintage Fair and a concert at The Grand Pavilion by Bois Goetre-Hen Male Choir. I am pleased to have had the support of the three Newton pubs who held a summer darts tournament in support of the Mayors Charities, raising £325. The winners were The Globe, all the players are pictured below – my thanks to you all.
ELEMENTS IN DANGER- RECYCLE YOUR GADGETS We are ever more aware of the environmental challenges facing us, but sometimes threats to our future are subtle- sometimes the evidence of these threats can even be found around the house. A recent study by The Royal Society of Chemistry has estimated that as many as forty million unused smartphones are stored away in people’s homes. With 52% of young people owning ten gadgets or more, it is feared that growing consumption trends will eventually cause a shortage of rare elements. It has been estimated that these elements, used in a variety of industries, are currently likely to run out in the next hundred years. With over thirty different elements used in every smartphone, scientists have urged the public to recycle their unused gadgets to preserve materials for future technologies. Protecting these rare elements is the collective responsibility of manufacturers, governments and individuals, but the Royal Society believes that the best way for individuals to make a difference is to follow the “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle” approach; reduce consumption by postponing phone upgrades, re-use by passing on gadgets to relatives, and recycle by returning them to retailers or searching for the nearest recycling centre online. Said I in some surprise, as I gazed across the waves. “Nay, ‘tis an unearthly crew – one no earthly man can save. And upon a night, some say, like this, their cries are heard amain – Forsaken crew! Upon their oars they cry, yet surely cry in vain! “And who”, said I with mockery, “is captain of this ship? “Why”, cried the old man in reply, “the worst of all sinners, boy, The one they call old Nick”. And on that ship a dread binnacle hangs, a lantern glowing red, Who sees its light is surely damned – at least, it has been said”. “Tales”, said I, with heavy scorn, “to frighten simple minds. I have to write a bucket list of things to see and do. How to go about it I haven’t got a clue. I lower that pail into the well of my imagination. Raise is up and tip it out, filled with anticipation. Oh no! What’s this? A shopping list? Not what I want at all. Whiskey, wine - the liquor aisle. Cheeses, pâtés, fresh foods all. But wait! A list of clues maybe, to places I should go. Bonnie Scotland’s lochs and highlands, or the vineyards of Bordeaux. As for that cheese, there’s Holland, cruise canals, see windmills too. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH My local leisure centre displays a banner that reads: “Make Health the Centre of Your Life.” This slogan seems logical. After all, that’s their business. But by putting health at the centre of your life, you may actually be putting the leisure centre there. However, “Make Health the Centre of Your Life” is actually a terrible adage, because you can go to the gym every day and still get sick. There is absolutely nothing we can do to guarantee our health. Healthy people still become ill. And then, if you have “put health at the centre of your life,” where are you when your health lets you down? You have no centre anymore. It’s just another version of the message we hear everywhere: “Put yourself at the centre of your life.” When life is good, it seems to work. But nobody’s life is perfect enough to be the centre of anything for long. We need a better centre. A cursory glance at the Ten Commandments reveals that the first four are about making God the centre. The next six are about how to treat other people. BRIDGEND CARERS CENTRE Are You Looking After Someone? Does Someone Rely On You For Support? Then why not contact Bridgend Carers Centre for information, advice and assistance. Last year over 1000 carers did, and feedback from them proves how supportive we are as a team. ‘It was very useful to have information about the Carers Centre and to talk to someone’ We are a carer led service, supporting all carers from young carers to adult carers. We have a presence where carers are: Primary and Secondary schools, 19 GP surgeries, Pharmacies, Bridgend Job Centre and Princess of Wales Hospital to ensure that carers are identified. We provide newsletters, home visits, social opportunities for carers to have a short break and meet other carers, holistic therapies, groups, exercise to improve wellbeing, benefits advice, legal advice, training, Mindfulness and much more. We also offer out of hours appointments for working carers, so please ask if this is what you need. We offer a flexible and responsive service for carers to receive a carers assessment. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL As summer drifts to a close, we had yet another record-breaking month during August, which saw us log 1364 vessel movements. We dealt with 12 logged incidents and we monitored a further 19. The logged incidents included tidal cut offs, struggling kite surfers and kayakers, a capsized dinghy, a disabled yacht, missing persons, swimmers in difficulty and an unidentified floating piece of ordnance. Also during the summer the watch hours were extended to 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for the first time since we opened. Our watch hours will slowly reduce, as the hours of daylight decrease, but we will endeavour to remain vigilant. We thank everyone who supported our street collections and our bookstall was also visited regularly and was a successful form of fundraising for us. During the summer we rely heavily on these events to meet our running costs for the station. Our next major fundraising event is the annual quiz at the Hi-Tide on October 9th at 7pm.Tickets are £5 and available from the tower or from watchkeepers. Recently we welcomed 12 new recruits who have already begun their training, followed by mentored watches. We are grateful for their enthusiasm, commitment and skills. PATIENT AIRLIFTED FROM REMOTE WELSH BEACH
Injured horse rider evacuated from Kenfig Sands beach. A female horse rider was airlifted from this remote stretch of beach, following a fall from her horse on Saturday at around 2:30PM. This multiagency evacuation involved Paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust, HM Coastguard Search and Rescue team and members of Kenfig Sands Surf Life Saving Club. The volunteer surf lifesavers were alerted to the incident by a member of the public and responded to the casualty. The volunteers requested an Ambulance and assistance from HM Coastguard Search and Rescue team, who were able to gain access onto this remote stretch of beach. Kenfig Sands, known locally as Sker beach, is a two mile long sandy stretch, almost completely inaccessible by road. Due to this remoteness, the decision was made to airlift the patient to hospital by Search and Rescue helicopter, based out of St Athan. A surf lifesaving club member, who was the first on scene said “the global surf lifesaving ethos is to provide ‘vigilance and service’ to anyone on the beach, whether in or out of the water. We are always happy to lend a hand when needed.” The riders involved would like to thank those who helped, especially the people who caught the horses and returned them safely to their trailer. This is not the first incident requiring extraction off the beach. Over the last few years, similar incidents have occurred where casualties require evacuation after being thrown from a horse. A more recent incident took place involving emergency services in May 2019.
BRIDGEND CARERS’ EVENT DRAWS IN THE CROWDS
Nearly 100 people turned up to the sunlit Hi Tide venue in Porthcawl on Thursday 5 September for a special event set up to highlight the support available to carers in Bridgend. The Bridgend Carers Information Day, hosted by Carers Trust South East Wales, provided carers with the opportunity to meet others in a similar position to themselves, whilst also featuring market stalls and guest speakers. Hafal, Carers Wales and Employability Bridgend were among 15 partner organisations who attended to provide information and support on the day. Carers Trust South East Wales will be working alongside them to ensure that carers in the borough get the best possible support, delivered from community venues across Bridgend. The day also saw the launch of the new Bridgend Carers Wellbeing Service, which aims to improve wellbeing by helping carers to make the most of their life alongside their caring role and maintain their independence. Andreas Van Wyk, of Awen Wales, highlighted Off Duty in his talk, a choir set up specifically for carers in Bridgend County Borough. The choir was formed in January and debuted their first song, titled “Strong”, in June. The first line of the song was written by choir member Jackie, a nurse of 43 years who now cares for her husband, who suffers with dementia. Councillor Huw David, Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council, said: “We are delighted to be working alongside Carers Trust South East Wales, and the recent information event was highly successful. “Since it was launched last spring, the new service has been offering enhanced support to local people specifically designed to help meet their needs and requirements. “It is doing an excellent job of building on the good work that has already taken place, and I am really looking forward to seeing the service develop further for the benefit of carers throughout the county borough.” Carers Trust South East Wales Chief Executive, Gareth Howells, said: “It’s been great to hear from so many carers today about the issues affecting them. Club features BRIDGEND RAMBLERS With the autumn upon us, Bridgend Ramblers have published our latest walks programme covering October to march. Yet again we have a wonderful variety of walks with three walks each Sunday varying from then a tenmile walk in the Beacons to visit a WWII airplane crash site for Remembrance Day, a nine-mile walk around the Newport Wetlands and an opportunity to see the wonders of Autumn in a five-mile walk around Gnoll Park. Our Tuesday walk group have a programme including a nine-mile walk to Henrhyd Falls. On alternative Wednesdays we have five-mile walks like the coastal walk in Llantwit Major and on alternative Thursdays we have three to four-mile strolls including one around Parc Slip. We are a friendly, welcoming group, and encourage new walkers to come along and give it a go, by offering three ‘freebies’ before we ask you to join The Ramblers. TRINITY CHURCH At Trinity Porthcawl we know that autumn is finally here when Harvest and Elvis services appear on our Notice sheets. At the time of writing this article, we are looking forward to our Harvest service on September 21st. This is always a special event and will be followed as usual by a lunch in the hall. Rev Wyn Roberts is famous as an Elvis Minister and will be taking our service during the Porthcawl Elvis Festival on September 29th. The following Sunday on 6th October is another special service when we have a Christening. I am delighted that the baby is my own grandson and he is also celebrating his first birthday. Our GAP group held a summer BBQ in August when more than 20 members gathered in a Nottage garden and enjoyed great food, camaraderie and fellowship. Even the weather was kind! The next Messy Church is on Sunday 13th October from 3-5pm. All children under 10 are welcome. The activities include painting, arts &crafts, games, stories, songs and a meal. This is a free activity, which runs monthly. We are delighted to welcome visitors and new members to our church. There is a chance to chat after the service when coffee is served. BRIDGEND TOWN TWINNING 25TH ANNIVERSARY
This year has seen the 25th Anniversary of Town Twinning between Bridgend and Villenave d’Ornon in France. It was on 6th May 1994 that the first charter was signed. Over the years many links have been formed and friendships made and now our relationship with this town is stronger than ever. To celebrate this Anniversary a group of forty-three delegates from Bridgend recently visited Villenave d’Ornon. Many of these friendships go back over twenty years but for some it was a first visit and it certainly won’t be their last. Members of Cor Tabernacl, Bridgend formed the majority of the group along with committee members of Bridgend Town Twinning Association. As this visit was a Civic Visit to celebrate the twenty five years, the Mayor of Bridgend Cllr. Alan Wathan, his wife Marlene and Mrs. Leanne Edwards, Town Clerk, were also invited. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful hospitality we received and the joint concert and celebration dinner were the highlights of a memorable weekend.
CONEY BEACH WHEELCHAIR FUND The wheelchair appeal was launched in August, via a gofundme facebook page, following a request by a parent for a specialist wheelchair to enable her daughter to access the beach. Local people & businesses have supported the appeal with around £850 raised through donations, coffee sales & beach yoga sessions. Further cash donations have been pledged by businesses – details to follow. Please follow our facebook page Coney Community Hub for updates. Fundraising has stepped up this month with a large raffle including prizes of cash, wetsuit, dryrobe, rugby tickets, meals & gift vouchers. PORTHCAWL LIONS The popular and very successful car boot sales give way to rugby at our host club, but have enabled us to be generous to local charities – not least the Rugby Club itself with its pavilion improvements. We have also donated to the Museum, and continued our usual support for KPC Youth, the foodbank, and young carers, while further afield we back water aid and our international arm is there at disasters like that in the Bahamas. Summer activities also included the golf day (supporting Prostate Cymru, Sandville and the stroke club, and the enormously popular Vintage Fayre. We now quieten down a bit but there will be Booksales and Pub raids as we plan ahead for Christmas. As we celebrate more ‘special’ birthdays we really would welcome new members so if you enjoy being involved with good company in all sorts of community events, as well as supporting good causes – do join us. PORTHCAWL ST. SEBASTIEN TOWN TWINNING ASSOCIATION
It was a trés grand soirée at The Hi Tide recently, as Porthcawl Town Twining celebrated twenty years of twining with the people of Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire. The evening started with a meal followed by speeches from the Mayor of each town. Cllr Graham Walters spoke in French welcoming our visitors, and the Mayor of St Sébastien, Laurent Turquoise responded in English. This was followed by the signing of the reaffirmation charters, the exchange of gifts and the cutting of a very special Twentieth Anniversary cake. The celebrations continued with singing and dancing led by Ukulele Bandits in English, Welsh and French and came to a grand conclusion with the singing of La Marseillaise. All had a goodly night out. ROTARY ROUNDUP Tea Party On Wednesday 28th August Porthcawl Rotary Club held their annual afternoon tea party at All Saints’ Church. Residents from four care homes in Porthcawl enjoyed a fun afternoon followed by a traditional afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes, jelly and custard. Rotary President Hugh Moatt welcomed everyone and opened the afternoon with a sing-along of familiar songs. A few games of Bingo followed with prizes for the winners. Club members were on hand to serve tea and ensure everyone had enough to eat. The afternoon was then rounded off with a free raffle for everyone. Thanks to all members who helped make the afternoon so enjoyable, the ladies and gent who made the delicious cakes and to Canon Philip Masson for his continued support. World Polio Day On Saturday the 24th October Awen Trust is lighting up the Grand Pavilion in Purple in support of World Polio Day. Rotary International has for many years tried to eradicate Polio and is very close to eliminating this awful disease. NEWS FROM THE TALBOT CHANGE OF DATE: You might have read in last month’s Seaside News that our Fashion Show with Klass had been planned for Tuesday, 29th October. Please make a note of the change of date, to Monday, 28th October. Everything else remains the same; tickets will be on sale from 1st September, priced £5, doors open 6.15 pm and light refreshments will be available. Eight local models have offered to strut the catwalk to show off the beautiful clothes from Klass. We have started planning our Christmas events, and have even arranged for Father Christmas to visit the Talbot on Friday, 29th November to switch on the Christmas lights throughout Kenfig Hill and Pyle (courtesy of Pyle Community Council). Children can visit Father Christmas in his grotto in the Rees Hall, whilst the parents, and others, can purchase various foods and crafts from our market stalls in the Talbot Hall. Another Enjoyable Summer River Cruise Despite the weather extremities of summertime this year the members of this club and their ladies thoroughly enjoyed their annual outing on a sunny but not uncomfortably hot day by firstly visiting the interesting town of Monmouth, where the morning was spent browsing the town’s both quaint and modern shops, before travelling the short distance to Symonds Yat for a river cruise up the glorious Wye Valley, followed by afternoon cream tea in the nearby Yat Hotel. CATWALK FOR CHARITY A Nottage resident is set for an unforgettable day when she takes to the catwalk at the annual Breast Cancer Care Show in London. The glamorous fashion show event kick-starts Breast Cancer Awareness Month and takes place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel on Thursday 3rd October. Sharan Sinclair, 44, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and will be sharing the stage with 31 other people aged between 29-75, who have also been diagnosed and were selected out of hundreds of applicants. Sharan says, “ I am honoured to have been chosen to model in The Show. I didn’t think when I was diagnosed that it would be possible for me to have this opportunity, especially after 5 operations, chemotherapy & radiotherapy. The support from my family & friends has been so important in my recovery and I’m doing this for them” “I was shocked when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2018 at just 43 years old. “I’m so excited to take part in The Show and I can’t wait to step onto the catwalk in front of many of the people who have been by my side every step of the way. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: I am thinking about splitting from my long term partner. We have been together for 20 years, never married. He owned the house where we live prior to us meeting. The title deeds are in his name. He has always paid the mortgage and bills. I generally have only paid for holidays, socialising etc. We have no children. I assume I have rights as his “common law wife”? Answer:The answer is No. There is no such concept or term as “common law wife”. You have never married and therefore, you do not enjoy the same rights as a wife. The reality is that you are treated in law no better than a best friend who may have lived with him for years. Your partner owned the house before you met him, paid the deposit on purchase, mortgage and bills. You do not mention any contributions you may have made to the renovation of the house which might make a difference. It is an unenviable position to be in and you may have to rely on his good nature/moral conscience as to whether he is prepared to give you a small lump sum to allow you to start again, for example, for a bond/six months’ rental payments, if you are not in a position to buy or a small deposit if you are able to secure a mortgage to buy a place of your own. It is regrettable that you have not married as this will have strengthened your position in law, even if the marriage had taken place in recent times. Think carefully about separating and whether some counselling may help you both overcome these issues. DEPUTYSHIP ORDER A deputyship order gives you the ability to make decisions on behalf of someone who has lost the capacity to care for and make decisions for themselves. You might apply for a deputyship order when there is no lasting power of attorney (or enduring power of attorney) in place. A Lasting Power of Attorney can only be granted if the donor is considered as having capacity. The lack of capacity may be because of any impairment of or disturbance in the functioning of the mind or brain, such as dementia or a stroke. The Court of Protection’s deputyship order will set out the deputy’s powers. the powers may relate, for example, to the person’s finances, property or accommodation (including where they live or whether they go into care), their medical treatment and other healthcare issues, and their personal welfare, eg: what clothes they wear, and anything needed for their general care and wellbeing. The powers given depend on the person’s needs. The Court may allow you to recover the fees from the funds of the person lacking capacity. A deputy must be over 18 and is often a family member or friend, although anyone can apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed. The proposed deputy completes a set of application forms and a suitable practitioner (eg the patient’s doctor) completes a medical report. An application fee is payable. You can employ a professional adviser to help you with the application and with your duties as a deputy (once appointed). Their fees can normally be recovered from the funds of the person lacking capacity. A professional deputy can be appointed if there are no suitable other persons. A court hearing is not normally required, provided there is no objection to the application. Deputies can be reimbursed reasonable and legitimate expenses, such as telephone calls, travel and postage. If these exceed £500, they may have to explain why. A deputyship ends automatically if the person lacking capacity recovers or dies. If the person becomes able to make their own decisions, the deputyship order stays in force until it expires or is discharged by another Court order. A deputy who cannot, or does not want to, remain a deputy must apply to the Court to have their order discharged. The Court can also discharge a deputy who it believes has acted improperly, eg not in the person’s best interests. SEPARATION AND DIVORCE Divorce is one of the most stressful and emotionally difficult life events. Getting the right advice can help guide you through the divorce process. At the point of separation, the family home can be an emotionally charged environment. You might want to leave the family home or you might want your partner to leave. However, before moving out, consider the following: • Do you or your partner have an alternative place to go, somewhere that meets your needs and your children’s needs? • What is best for your children? If possible, you should aim for as little upheaval as possible – so that the children can remain close to their school, their friends and their childcare. Being close to your support network and to your work will also be important. • Safety: if you are in an abusive relationship, your safety and your children’s safety should be your paramount concern. It is possible to apply to a divorce court for an occupation order, which is an order excluding your partner from the house. Should you consider this step necessary, specialist advice is crucial. For separating parents, sorting out the arrangements for their children can be highly emotionally charged, making it difficult to agree – particularly in the early stages. In time, hopefully the practicalities of child care can be discussed and agreed upon freely. If you still cannot come to an agreement then mediation should be considered. Counselling can also be very valuable in some cases, which you can attend together or separately. Speaking to someone about the breakdown of the relationship might help you put matters in perspective and make speaking with your expartner easier. You can also consider family therapy. Tuesday 10th September and we’re back in our venue the Talbot Center Kenfig Hill , usual time 2pm to 4.30 pm All our members were glad to catch up with each other after the summer break. Meeting chaired by Christine, minutes read out by Katherin and correspondence read out by Enid. WI business discussed and Federation news read out to our members, there are trips and dates for our diary’s for us to participate in. We have started a Lunch Club and Jackie is organising the day and time, we are hoping it will be a goodbye addition to our list is things to do together. Several of our members are interested in the Craft Spectacular in Margam Orangery and with Christmas looming on the horizon it’s our chance to get presents early. Our speaker was Marianne Harman. Her topic exercises for the older generation, what a good time we had she had us exercising to music and we didn’t stop laughing she was such a lively lady and showed us you can exercise at any age. Next month we have Helen Latimer her topic Puppetry from puppet theatre Wales. We finished our meeting with tea or coffee and biscuits. We will be looking out for you next month call in . On July 25th we were joined by our speaker/demonstrator who showed us her exceptional skills at making small items such as animals and birds out of sheep wool. We had an enjoyable social event in August when a few guests from local WI’s joined us for a delicious afternoon tea. The tempting spread was prepared by the committee and followed by a quiz and bingo. Arrangements were made for members to visit “Gareth’s kitchen” in Lampeter and names were taken of ladies wishing to see Owen Money at the Hi Tide , both events in October. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS In August many members enjoyed an afternoon tea with entertainment at Margam Orangery. This was by invitation from Swansea Federation and we were very pleased to accept. We also held our own cream tea, which has now become an annual fixture in August. After the summer break our committee met to make plans for the coming season when all our activities will be restarting. Our meeting this month is on October 9th 2.00p.m. at All Saints Church Hall. Final arrangements were made for our trip to The Mansion House Cardiff on Wednesday 2nd October. All members that had attended agreed that our Brecon trip and Fish and Chip supper had been most enjoyable. Our luncheon would be on Tuesday 17th September at the Harvester McArthur Glen 12.30 pm. Members were asked to submit a photograph of a Laleston landmark for a competition for our next years programme cover. Our meeting then progressed with our Harvest Auction conducted by Mo Morgan as our auctioneer who as usual with her humour and fun had all members rocking with laughter and managed to raise £120.10, which was to be donated to the local charity Bridgend Riding for the Disabled. After a lovely summer break, September found us back in the ‘Scouts Hall’ in Woodland Avenue, to enjoy another WI gathering, President Jennifer welcomed new and old members. At the September meeting we celebrated ‘Harvest Time’ with a delicious meal of fish and chips, followed by a beautiful cake to mark the occasion of Joan’s eightieth birthday. Ending the evening with silly stories read by Shirley and Marilyn, which caused a great deal of laughter. During the August break 50 members went on a trip to Worcester, although the weather wasn’t perfect every one had a great day out. Also in August a few ladies attended the ‘Porthcawl WI’ summer tea. We received a warm welcome and a delightful spread, we thank them for their invitation. On September 2nd we were invited by ‘Cwm Brombil WI’ to a coffee morning in aid of ‘Maggies Centre’, which is a cancer support charity based at Singleton Hospital. Once again we enjoyed wonderful hospitality at their Presidents Farm House, where the sun always seems to shine. We hope lots of money was raised for a very worthy cause. Hello everybody, we are clearly into the last quarter of the year. I hope you are all looking forward to the Christmas celebrations. I have an events to invite you to, on the 10th of October. Samantha B is holding a fashion show at the Grove golf club, not golf attire, but lovely fashionable outfits. Tickets can be purchased £5 on the door, I am sure it will be a very pleasant. The I.W. ladies have gathered on several occasions to knit and natter, a lot of the latter, with tea and biscuits. We are knitting blankets for foreign charities and hats for sailors. It gets very cold in the winter at sea. We also make things to sell on our Christmas stalls. Some of our members are very talented quilters and you may see these items on sale, cushions quilts etc. I hope you are all looking forward to the party season. Our group has had sessions preparing donated stamps to send to the Lepra charity. We collect crisp packets, milk bottle tops, ring pulls from drinks cans. We are all doing our best for recycling. Meet Tom and Iris. They took out a very good equity release plan on their property 6 years ago to help their Grandson get on the property ladder and to give them some extra cash for home improvements, etc. They have always been pleased with the plan but paying interest at a higher rate than now currently available and they recently called to ask if any better options were available, as they had seen that rates have fallen to an alltime low. We took a look at the market for them and were able to lower their rate by almost 2%, a massive difference. They had a proportionate penalty to leave the existing lender early, however with all facts and figures considered, they have moved to a new more cost-effective scheme, with greater flexibility, which reflects the plans that now exist across the whole market. Needless to say, they are delighted. A word of caution however – transferring the borrowing to a different lender will not work for everyone, for a variety of reasons, so we can’t assume that a new solution will exist for you, as the numbers have to all come together to make it possible. However, when we looked at Tom and Iris’s situation, we didn’t know what could be achieved, either. The rule of thumb here is to simply ask for an illustration of what might be achieved, as it costs nothing to find out. Yes, of course, there have been people we have not been able to help, simply because the numbers didn’t work. However, for those that have been able to assist, they are delighted to be able to enjoy the lower rates now on offer. Competition in the market usually works in the clients’ favour, as interest rates reduce and schemes become more flexible. Last month I asked a few clients if they’d heard of the mercurial investment skills of Warren Buffett and was met with a stony silence. Our Annual Show last month was a great success with a number of our new members winning quite a few prizes. Well done to one and all and let’s hope this has encouraged you to ‘have a go’ next year as it is our 50th year celebration. Our new evening talks programme begins this month with a talk entitled “12 months in the life of Aberglasney” being given by Joseph Atkins. The talk is scheduled for the 14th October and begins at 7pm. The event is free to members however new members can join on the night. The programme is set for the remainder of the year and continues until June next year and the lectures and events occur on the second Monday of the month. As autumn is rapidly approaching it is time to start sorting out our gardens in readiness for the onset of winter. A key task is to gather in leaves as they begin to fall. Once they have rotted down, leaves make lovely mulch for the garden. It is also time to lift and store both potatoes and carrots which will come in handy for all those soups and casseroles during the cold winter months. PORTHCAWL FLORAL ARRANGEMENT SOCIETY We are a friendly group of about 35 members who meet on alternate Wednesday evenings at Awel Y Mor Community Centre from 7pm. CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB With the clocks going back and the days drawing in it’s hard to believe that October is the start of the planting season, beginning with spring bulbs, for a natural drift, throw them gently in the air and plant them (2 ½ x their own depth) where they land. Anything planted now will benefit from the month ahead to get its roots well stuck in! Prune climbing and rambling roses and tie in the stems to save damage from autumn winds, always clear up fallen rose leaves to prevent black spot overwintering on them, ready to pounce on new foliage next spring! Reuse the old compost from discarded hanging basket displays as mulch on your borders, to insulate plant roots and deter pesky weeds. We have a Halloween Party on the 27th at five in the Green Hall for your little monsters, it’s free and it’s fun! We are also holding a craft fair, again in the Green Hall, 11.30 on the 19th, come and start your Christmas shopping! Did you know – October the 1st is National Coffee Day, lots of us need caffeine in the morning, but in the coffee plant caffeine is a pesticide, still fancy a cup? Chris Early

Sow green manures or cover empty ground with well-rotted farmyard manure or your own compost. Either dig it in or let the worms do it for you, increasingly popular with amateurs and professionals alike. Manure obtained direct from farms or stables can be variable in quality, not always well rotted or weed free. Bagged manure maybe is preferable. Do not manure where brassicas are to be grown but lime instead. Over –wintering crops to be sown now for an early start next Spring are Japanese onions Senshyu, broad beans Aquadulce and peas Meteor; also shallots and garlic which benefits from a couple of months below 10C. Envirotect tunnels will protect them from the worst of the Winter weather. Winter Density lettuce could be grown in an empty greenhouse. For some winter colour in the garden replace summer bedding in pots with Winter flowering pansies and violas perhaps mixed with ornamental grasses. For a fuller display plant bulbs in pots in layers. Divide perennials to increase stock and clean up any diseased roots. Treat lawns with an Autumn weed, feed and moss killer. Frank Fulgoni

Health & wellbeing COST OF CANCER Well the nights are drawing in and strictly has started so that means only one thing. Winter is coming. I trust you’ve all had a great summer? I know we have. If you didn’t see the September Issue our annual walk was a huge success. The weather was a challenge but it was awesome. We are still waiting to collect sponsor money in and as soon as that’s in we’ll be updating you all. The last event in our 2019 calendar is our Annual Light for A Life. This where we get to remember our loved ones. You can sponsor a light on our Christmas Tree (there is no fixed amount) and each light on the tree represents a life lost. This doesn’t have to be a life lost to cancer, we’re just remembering our loved ones. We have a memory book and if you fill in the form with a message that message gets uploaded to our website and you’ll be able to see your message at any time. It’s just our way of remembering. You’ll also get a seeded heart which you can plant in memory of those who aren’t with us. It’s down at the Hi-Tide on the 1st December from about 5pm, keep an eye out on our Facebook page for updates. Father Christmas will be there, there’s a delicious hog roast, we have raffle prizes and we also have a choir singing the best in carols. STEP ONE OF THE TEN PERFECTIONS HEEDFULNESS What heedfulness amounts to is the opening of the mind in full attention; and this dropping of habitual, careless or compulsive tendencies. This is the preparation for seeding mental perfections. That is, when your mind is opened out of its preoccupation, you have a chance to reflect on what it’s doing and bring up a relevant intention such as ‘patience,’ ‘kindness,’ and so on. Heedfulness is supported by restraint, a nonjudgmental pausing and gathering in of mental energy. Restraint can be used to create a few seconds’ pause in which you pay unbiased attention to what’s happening for you. If you build in pauses of ten seconds or so ten to twenty times a day, this doesn’t entail carving out a lot spare time. But this small exercise will help to keep you on track, make useful adjustments and avoid running into trouble. Neville Evans

Arts & music PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR
The choir performed to a packed house at our annual concert on the 14th September. This years special guests ‘ida’, a fantastic group of London based sopranos, wowed the audience with an eclectic mix of operatic and musical medleys. Thanks to all who supported us on the evening. Annually, the Dillwyn Evans award is presented to a local student who is going to study music at university. This year the £250.00 award was given to Rebecca Coleman, a student from Porthcawl Comprehensive pupil, who is going to Bristol University to study music. We wish her all the best. With the annual concert behind us, the choir is focusing on our charity concert with the much acclaimed Polperro Fishermen’s Choir in All Saints Church on the 5th October 7pm. This promises to be an exciting evening in aid of Latch. We’re looking forward to welcoming our Cornish friends who hosted us earlier in the year. We are holding an open night on the 1st of October at Arlington church at 7pm and invite anyone interested to come along and see what we do. This informal evening will show how much fun we have. Bridgend/Porthcawl’s Last Flight to Pluto will be jetting off to the USA this month to play a major music festival in Chicago. The group, which signed a deal with White Knight Records, has a great new album out entitled “A Drop in the Ocean” (which I recently reviewed) and it has been having rave reviews. The band is: vocalist Alice Freya, guitarists Ryan Barnard and Jack Parry, bassist Lewis Kreft and drummer Daz Joseph. They have already appeared at some large venues including London’s Islington Assembly Hall. Former Shy Warrior keyboard player Richard Burton’s son has landed a top job on the keys with 80s icon Howard Jones, so well done Dan! Following on from what I wrote in last month’s column about how I believe there has been a decline in the standard of documentary programmes on television since their heyday in the 1970s, lately I have been enjoying watching Series 6 of The Avengers on DVD, which was first screened in 1969, with Steed and Tara King. Although production difficulties meant that filming got off to a bad start, it soon recovered and got into its stride, and what stands out about this series is not only
email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk the pictorial clarity – it was shot on 35mm film – but also the inventiveness of the imagery. I believe that this can largely be credited to Peter Hammond, the director who worked on some of the earlier series, who encouraged later directors like Robert Fuest and John Hough to employ unusual camera angles. It became something of a visual style for other productions of the same period, as well as finding its way into cinema films, and maybe in the end it was overdone, but now it brings back memories of TV shows and films made with great visual style and panache, rather than today’s reliance on realism and special effects. Sport reports BOWLS CHAMPION
At a recent all Wales bowls championship held in Llandrindod Wells, Steve Hawes, of the Prince of Wales Bowls Club in Porthcawl, won the Seniors singles four wood championship, which resulted in him being the best bowler in Wales in this category. During the previous knock-out games Steve defeated many of the best bowlers in Wales. In the final, which was an exciting nail-biting match, Steve came back from losing 20-15 to eventually win by one shot with a score of 21-20 thus becoming champion. This match showed both his fighting qualities and his brilliant skill. The presentation ceremony was a big event with the President of the Wales Bowling Association presenting Steve with a cup and an engraved pewter plate. Steve’s home club have been celebrating having one of the best bowlers in Wales in their midst. He has brought honour to both the club and to the town of Porthcawl. Congratulations to Steve on achieving this prestigious award. John Jenkins
A GREAT END TO A GREAT SEASON FOR PEN Y BONT SLSC
Pen y Bont’s nipper section finished their beach season in style, coming second overall at the Pen y Bont nipper carnival this month. Almost eighty of our talented nippers competed at the carnival and the effort, teamwork and skill demonstrated by all of them was outstanding. They were also only twenty five points from first place - maybe next year! The British Open Nationals this year took place in St David’s, West Wales, and over twenty of Pen y Bont’s senior members travelled down for the weekend to compete. There was some tough competition provided by the English clubs like Portreath and Woolacombe, but our seniors came second overall which is a great achievement at such a high level of competition. The efforts of our nippers, juniors, seniors and masters over the past few weeks at their respective British Nationals resulted in Pen y Bont coming fourth overall in the Super Club of the Year points accumulator. Well done to each and every competitor! With the summer holidays over and the winter weather closing in, Pen y Bont has now ended their weekend patrols of Ogmore by Sea beach. The club had a successful season and is looking forward to doing it all again next summer. Meriel Clode
PORTHCAWL RUNNERS NEWS It has been a great summer for the Porthcawl Runners. Four club members bagged themselves medals at the South Region Trail Championships, which were incorporated within this year’s Rabbit Run. There was gold in the MM50-54 category for Mike Furness, silver for Romana Maine (MW55-59) while there were also bronze medals for Karen Phillips (MW50-54) and Chris Jones (MM55-59) in their respective age categories. Congratulations also to Julian Jones on reaching the 150 parkrun milestone and Susan Thomas on 100 parkruns. The Bridgend County Running League summer events have once again been well received with some excellent performances. At the Kenfig Dunes event, Geraint Lewis came home in fourth overall from 288 competitors while Hannah Jenkins was second leading female. Then at Newbridge Fields, Mike Furness was second in his age category (MM50-54) while Gabriella Booth was first SENW and Deb Roberts second MW45-49. There was also plenty of fun to be had at the club’s toga themed scavenger hunt and social along with the monthly club parkrun, the Beer Mile and Barry 10k all across one weekend last month. The Royal Porthcawl Golf Club Annual Charity Day took place on Thursday 1st August with a full field of 155 players taking part on a glorious day in Rest Bay. Chairman of the RNLI Fundraising Committee David Shillaw and fellow Committee member Jeff John attended the day, providing a warm welcome to each and every participant on the first tee. The Mayor of Porthcawl, representatives from Porthcawl RNLI including Mr Shillaw and Mr John were invited by the Golf Club to attend a drinks reception and cheque presentation on Tuesday 3rd September.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE FOR CHARITY There has been plenty happening in another busy month for Porthcawl Runners. A big shout out in particular to the seven club members who all jumped on their bikes to cycle 55 miles from Newport to Porthcawl in order to raise money for the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group.
It was organised by Josephine Shirley who was joined on the ride by Nicky Middleton, Mark James, Mark Jones, Jo Rowlands, Jayne Hopkins and Gareth Roper. Meanwhile the final Bridgend County Running League event of the summer on Rest Bay Beach, which was run by the club, was a massive success. A special thanks goes out to Lucy Jones who took on the responsibility of race director for the evening. The beginning of this month sees club members descend on the capital in their droves for the annual Cardiff half marathon, where some will be going the distance for the first time, including graduates of the recent Couch to 5k groups. They will also provide inspiration for the next batch of C25K recruits, who began their nine-week programme at the end of last month, run by Alwyn and Susan Thomas. Welcome to the Nipper Section Our club’s Nipper section (Age 7-13) has over 80 children. As a Nipper your child will be taught surf safety, basic lifesaving skills, surf and beach sports (wading, surf swimming, boardpaddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays).
