LETTERS ESMAE DONATES HER HAIR FOR CHARITY

Have your say info@seasidenews.co.uk has no Bible at home they can read it on one of the many Bible websites. They might read Paul’s letter to the Philippians (chapter 4, verses 6 and 7): “Have no anxiety, but in everything make your requests known to God in prayer and petition with thanksgiving. Then the peace of God which is our utmost understanding, will keep guard over your hearts and your thoughts, in Christ Jesus”. C Brown, Porthcawl

PORTHCAWL POLAR BEARS SWIM THE CHANNEL

Dear Editor, Esmae Ann Bold is a 5-year-old pupil of Nottage Primary School, Porthcawl. Several months ago she saw a TV programme about children who had donated their hair to The Little Princess Trust and decided she would like to do the same for her friend Hugo Missen and to help all those children less fortunate than herself. On Friday the 14th of August Esmae had 11 inches of her hair cut off to donate to the Little Princess Trust who provide wigs to children with cancer to restore their confidence and identity. Penny, in Red’s Hair Saloon, Suffolk Place Porthcawl, provided the haircut and then styled Esmae’s new bob; the charge for which Penny asked to be added to the fund. Esmae has so far raised £985 by donations to her link at Just Giving https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/natasha-bold Esmae also raised another £440.50 for the trust by running a Cake Stall on her drive with the help of the Facebook page ‘Porthcawl NHS recipe book’ https://www.facebook.com/ groups/285614419187886/about along with some of her school friends who kindly donated cakes for her to sell. There have also been several other donations amounting to £50. So a grand total of £1530. Nigel Lewis-Davidson, Porthcawl

STRENGTH FROM GOD Dear Editor, I enjoyed the poem entitled “Pray” by Pauline Lewis, in Seaside News for September. The poem was about Amalek and Israel fighting in the Wilderness between Egypt and the Promised Land in Moses’ day. Pauline Lewis writes: “Moses on the mountain stand The battle surging far below” Exodus 17:11 “Whenever Moses raised his hands Israel had the advantage, and when he lowered his hands Amalek had the advantage.” Aaron and Hur sat Moses on large stone and held up Moses’ hands. Then God gave Israel the victory. After that, “Moses built an altar and named it Jehovah-Nissi” (Exodus 17:15), meaning “Jehovah is my banner”. If we need Almighty God to help us, as the poem suggests, we need to pray to Him. But also we need to read the Bible. If someone 8 | seaside news

Dear Editor, Four local swimmers proved their fitness by swimming the English Channel this July in a relay format raising money for Porthcawl RNLI and Porthcawl NCI. The team is known as Porthcawl Polar Bears and regularly trains in the open water at Porthcawl. The four are, Sian Jakeman, Peter Foster, Rosalind Edmonds and Tom Chapman, they completed the legendary swim on 12 July this year in 13 hours 22 minutes and were escorted and supported by pilot boat Sea Leopard. Prior to the swim they decided to raise money for Porthcawl Lifeboat and Porthcawl’s National Coastwatch Institution. To date the fund raising has totalled over £1250 to each charity. Their fund raising page is still open at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Porthcawl-Polar-Bears Some members of Porthcawl lifeboats fundraising team and members of the NCI unit met outside the lifeboat station to thank the Porthcawl Polar Bears for their donation. David Shillaw, Chairman of Fundraising at Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat said, ‘It is an incredible achievement and we congratulate and thank each swimmer for considering our charity particularly during a time when our donations are down’. Photographs of their swim can be seen by going to the following link: https://www.channelswimmingassociation.com/ swim/5154/porthcawl-polar-bears Ian Stroud, Porthcawl

COST OF CANCER

VITAMIN C

Well I believe we are officially in Autumn and how bizarre does it feel? Well it certainly does to me. You guys raised over £1,000 for the Valley to Coast over August Walk this year which is just incredible. Thank you to those who donated to your friends or family who did the walk and thank you to those who did the 18 miles. If you can get me your sponsor money as quickly as possible that would be helpful. Thank you. We have some Wonderful news. The giving platform we used before lockdown – Wonderful.org are starting back up again but not just that they created a new platform called Wonderful Payments, this is for those who just want to “donate” to us without the need to do an event and we’ve just found out that we’ve been accepted. Yayyyyyy. We are currently using PayPal but that can work out expensive but Wonderful Payments are going to charge just 10p per transaction, which could save the charity a fortune. Hopefully in the next few weeks I’ll have a brand-new shiny button on the website and links to it so anyone looking to just donate will be able to. I’ll keep you posted. Keep an eye out on our social media platforms, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Which reminds me to mention if you could get your family and friends to like us on these platforms it helps to spread the word of what we do. Anyway, don’t forget to keep looking after yourselves as well as your friends, families and neighbours, wear those masks and keep a social distance. The sooner we adhere to the rules the sooner we can get back to normal fundraising. Nicky, Emma & Cath Trustees

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. It is needed for normal growth and development. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water. Leftover amounts of the vitamin leave the body through the urine. Although the body keeps a small reserve of these vitamins, they have to be taken regularly to prevent a shortage in the body. Vitamin C is needed to repair tissue in all parts of the body, it form an important protein used to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels. It heals wounds and forms scar tissue, repairs and maintains cartilage, bones, and teeth and aids in the absorption of iron. Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that block some of the damage caused by free radicals. Vegetables that are high in Vitamin C: Broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower; Green and red peppers; Spinach, cabbage, turnip greens, and other leafy greens; Sweet and white potatoes; Tomatoes and tomato juice; Winter squash. MEDITATION How many times have we suffered, and how many times have we created suffering for others, because of our negative emotions? How many times have we been consumed by selfaversion because of things we have said or done? How many times have we acted in ways that we had previously promised ourselves, “never again”! This is not the first lifetime in which we have had to endure such a frustrating state of affairs. It has happened countless times before, in countless lifetimes. And unless we take more responsibility for our lives, it will go on happening for countless more lives in the future. Just stop and think about that for a moment. The Buddha once observed that the greatest of all enemies is our own untrained mind. But – and it is here that we can find some hope – the mind is trainable. The Buddha also said that there is no friend that can compare to the well-trained mind. So please put forth your best effort to train your mind. Break free from your worst enemy and find happiness and peace with your truest friend. Contact me for free meditation days, free retreats, and free online meditation meetings. NEWS BETTER BUS SERVICES IN PORTHCAWL

LIBRARIES BACK OPEN

I recently met a group of ladies who are campaigning for better bus services in Porthcawl. They want more frequent buses throughout the day and I have raised this with the local bus company. But they are also campaigning for the return of the bus, which used to run into Porthcawl via Mawdlam, Ton Kenfig and Nottage. Since the closure of the Dr Eales surgery, many residents of Nottage have been transferred to the Cornelly Surgery. But getting there by bus is very difficult as it means catching two buses each way – one into town and one to North Cornelly and back. They point out that First Cymru runs three buses an hour in and out of Porthcawl through South Cornelly and argue that diverting one of these to travel along the other route would provide a service to residents living along it who have no buses at all. As this service is commercial and has no public subsidy, any decisions will be down to the operator. However, I have been in touch with BCBC to see if they could reintroduce this service by providing a subsidy to operators using extra cash made available to them for bus services.

IT’S great news that our libraries are back up and running. They were among the many things that people missed most during lockdown. Popping in to the library to have a browse is something many people enjoy and these days, libraries offer so much more than just a good book. They are also the IT hubs, which give many people without their own computers access to the internet. Being unable to go online must have hit people without their own devices very hard as many activities moved onto the web including shopping and meeting up with friends and family. Libraries are also social places these days- gone are the days of being shushed for speaking in anything above a whisper. Now, they are used for book clubs, children’s reading groups and many other communal activities. Of course, there is still much that we are missing but we must hope that theatres and concert halls will re-open shortly even with social distancing and that our choirs can once again get together. However, permission to re-open and the viability of reopening are two different things. In the meantime, I urge everyone to visit his or her libraries to prove that we can stay connected and be socially responsible.

JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL DISTANCING Whilst it is now mandatory to wear face coverings in indoor public places such as supermarkets and other shops, retailers must still continue to do everything they can to ensure that safe social distancing can be achieved. There has been concern that some supermarkets in particular have moved away from some of the safeguards they had put in place at the start of the pandemic. However, this is not the case everywhere and I know that many of our stores continue to work hard to provide a safe and positive shopping environment. I receive regular briefings from some of the supermarkets outlining how its stores are proactively taking steps to ensure compliance with the latest guidance. Supermarkets have an important role to play – both to ensure they comply with Welsh Government legislation and guidance and to help reinforce the public health messages about Covid 19. The Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths meets regularly with food retailers and continues to raise concerns around reports of social distancing breaches. She has also written to supermarkets about adhering to the rules in Wales. Covid has not gone away and everyone has a responsibility to maintain social distancing. CARWYN JONES MS for Bridgend

BRIDGEND FOR EUROPE At the time of writing the UK government has announced a unilateral change to the EU Withdrawal Agreement, an international treaty. This raises a question: can any country trust the UK to abide by any trade agreement it negotiates? Likely serious consequences include undermining Northern Ireland’s peace process, and making a no-deal Brexit almost inevitable (although the government will naturally try to blame the EU). Our photo shows an International Driving Permit, not needed since 1991 in the Single European Market. Will we need one in future? Nobody knows. It is clear that pet passports are unlikely to be valid, along with the European Health Insurance Card. Post-Covid, expect extra holiday costs, including kennel fees, health insurance, and roaming charges. We’ll probably also need extra motor insurance (like the “Green Card” of old). Meanwhile, road hauliers warn of queues at the ports, while the government urgently seeks 30 huge lorry-parking sites around the UK. Food and medicine shortages and higher prices are real prospects for 2021. Whatever happened to the “Oven Ready Deal?” Nobody says. All the above are possible or probable brexit costs. What are the actual, real benefits? Nobody knows, nobody says. Allison Felton bridgend@walesforeurope.org

EXCITING NEWS FOR MYNYDD CYNFFIG PUPILS

HELPING LOCAL BUSINESSES TO RECOVER

Plans to provide Mynydd Cynffig Primary pupils with a new replacement school have moved a step closer. Following a recent sites evaluation review, the council is developing plans for building an all-new primary school, complete with a 75-place nursery, on the same site as Mynydd Cynffig Juniors. This is currently being progressed as part of the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools and the council’s own school modernisation programmes, and I will have more details for you soon. In the meantime, infants at Mynydd Cynffig are benefitting from high-quality modular classrooms, which were set up before the start of the new school term. Manufactured locally to a high standard, the modular classrooms are ensuring that infants can continue to be educated on site after work to repair a burst pipe at the current school revealed further damage which forced the building to largely close. I’d like to thank the teachers, staff and pupils of Corneli Primary School, Ysgol Y Ferch O’r Sgêr and the Integrated Children’s Centre for making room for the infants, giving them a warm welcome and helping to ensure they could continue to receive their education before the new classrooms could be set up – look out for more news soon.

As part of our support for businesses following the pandemic lockdown, the council has provided several months of free parking incentives at town centre car parks. We are continuing to do so, and throughout October all the way through to 31 March 2021, Porthcawl’s John Street car park will be free to use between 12noon and 3pm. In Bridgend town centre, the free parking will be available at the Rhiw multi storey where the first three hours will be free of charge. Local businesses need all the help they can get to meet the challenges of the pandemic, so it’s good to see that the free parking concession can continue as part of our overall support. Support is also available for employers on how they can help any members of their staff who may have been shielding to return to work. This includes guidance on whether it is sufficiently safe or essential for staff to return to the workplace, how to undertake a risk assessment beforehand, what resources are available to support their emotional and mental wellbeing, and much more. For these and other useful resources, please visit the Healthy Working Wales website to find out more.

BIG PLANS FOR SALT LAKE The next phase in the regeneration of Porthcawl’s waterfront area has moved a step closer with news that marketing is underway for a food store development on part of the Salt Lake site. Set to occupy just over two acres on the northern portion of the site including the area known locally as the Green, money generated from this development will be reinvested into infrastructure improvements and further stages of the town’s regeneration plans. Planning guidelines are supporting the marketing of the site to ensure that the new food store will remain a high-quality development, which complements other regeneration efforts in the town. A Section 106 agreement is being factored in to provide clear links, sightlines and pedestrian access between the food store and businesses based in nearby John Street, while the rest of the Salt Lake site also features a mix of open space, car parking and active travel routes. The news follows action, which the council took in late 2017 to remove a development deadlock on Salt Lake so that it could be developed for residential, leisure, retail and commercial use. Look out for further updates as the regeneration continues to take shape in coming weeks and months. WOMEN OF COURAGE HEROINES OF SOE Odette Sansom, a mother with three daughters, served as an SOE agent in France between 1942 and 1944. In France, she linked up with fellow agent Peter Churchill (whom she later married) and they ran Resistance networks in Burgundy, the French Riviera and the French Alps. When the Gestapo arrested Odette and Churchill at 2 am on 16 April 1943 the couple saved their lives by claiming that they were related to Winston Churchill, a story the Gestapo believed. At Fresnes Prison, near Paris, the Gestapo placed Odette in solitary confinement in the dark believing this would break her. However, as a child, she’d contracted a serious illness, which had blinded her for three and a half years so she didn’t mind the dark. The advancing Allies freed Odette in August 1944 and her SOE experiences were chronicled in a movie, Odette, which was released in 1950. Anna Neagle played Odette while Trevor Howard played Peter Churchill. The movie, a great success, ensured that Odette became a celebrated member of the SOE. EST 2013

From Saturday – Tuesday 1st/4th July 1933, two Royal Navy destroyers, HMS Crusader and HMS Comet (ship in the background), paid a courtesy visit to Porthcawl. The PUDC Chairman Cllr. D.J. Rees held a Civic Reception in the Grand Pavilion where entertainment was laid on for the crew. On the Sunday there was a church parade led by the band of 6th Battalion Welch Regiment (above). On parade were 180 ratings under Commander J.N. Knox, Glamorgan Constabulary under the Chief Constable, Captain J. Lindsey and various other local organisations. The service was held at the English Congregational Church and was conducted by Rev. J.P. Southwell. On Monday, other festivities included a tour through the Vale of Glamorgan and a rifle and revolver shooting match at Newton ranges between teams from both ships, Glamorgan Police, who eventually won the event; and Porthcawl Rifle Club who came second. Arranged by the council, there was, also, a Gala Dance at the Grand Pavilion and a searchlight display watched from the promenade by hundreds of holidaymakers. On Tuesday, Cllr Rees and other councillors, plus their wives, were invited aboard HMS Crusader for afternoon tea. The warships left Porthcawl at 10pm that night, sending up a few rockets in farewell. Ceri Joseph

BRIDGEND & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Over the past few months, the society has been engaging with members through its website and Facebook page, offering short, researched articles on topics and people of local historic interest. With the new season starting in September we decided that, not being able to meet in the comfort of our Carnegie House home, we would go for history on the hoof and the first meeting of the season was an outdoor, socially-distanced, guided tour of the castle at Newcastle, ably led by our chair, Ian Hutchinson. Around a dozen members attended and were treated to a fascinating canter through the history of the castle. Its origins were as a defensive stronghold at the westernmost edge of the initial Norman invasion, guarding both the river below and the route to St Davids. It passed through a range of illustrious owners including, it is thought, Henry ll, and gradually fell out of use from the 13th century until it was abandoned altogether in the 16th century. We are already making tentative plans for a series of such outdoor visits, prevailing circumstances and Welsh Government guidance permitting. Ian Price

SCHOOLS PORTHCAWL COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome all of our staff and pupils back to school after so many months of uncertainty. It is a delight to see our learners back, motivated and enthusiastic to learn, completing their work in the classrooms instead of online which has become the norm in recent times. Year 7 are settling in very well and adjusting quickly to life at ‘big school’ despite their interrupted transition programme. They all had their photographs taken last week and looked very smart indeed in their new school uniforms and sports kits, and they are beginning to get to know our large campus. Most parents and carers are already accustomed to receiving messages from school via the SIMS Parent App and these communications are more important than ever before in these unpredictable times. Please keep a close eye on messages sent from school, and if you have any queries at all please email info@porthcawlschool.co.uk for help. During this term we would normally hold several Parents’ Meetings and we are currently investigating ways in which we can deliver these remotely and will let you know via SIMS Parent App. Many thanks to the Porthcawl Covid-19 strategy group who kindly donated eleven refurbished laptops to school. These computers are greatly appreciated and will be used by our pupils who are less advantaged. Finally, thanks to the school community for the kind words and encouragement over the past weeks. Andrew Slade, Head Teacher

BRIDGEND COLLEGE MUSIC Local musician and rock legend, Phillip Jones, started our music department back in the 1990s. Phil has taught and inspired thousands of learners over the years, with some of who had never picked up an instrument before. Phil would always see the shared passion in people of all ages and backgrounds and would patiently teach from the basics all the way to professional levels. Music students would leave college completely different 26 | seaside news

Email us your report to: info@seasidenews.co.uk from when they first started, having now developed confidence, experience and a bigger understanding of themselves musically and creatively. Phil was a multi-instrumentalist that could help many of our students with their instrument choices. Despite his local legend status, he was one of the hardest working musicians we have ever met and lived his life to the full with amazing stories. Unfortunately, the inspirational legend that is Phill, sadly passed away much too soon but he will always be remembered and commemorated within our department. We are deeply saddened by his recent passing but glad he knew that we named our live performance space after him, The Phill Jones Theatre. We will also be introducing a new annual award in his name, honouring the student who the music team sees as having progressed the most and worked to the standards that Phil always upheld. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Adam Richards and Ruth Hughes Bevan Bridgend College

DREAM, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE AT ST CLARE’S PORTHCAWL

Our Class of 2020 made us so proud with their GCSE grades, with 51.8% at Grade 7+ (A*/A) and over 97% of grades at 4+ (C+). To have achieved these results this year is testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and staff. Throughout these unprecedented times our students remained resilient and strong in their work ethic and emotional maturity. Star performers were Jaynee Winslade-Gregory (nine 9s and a 7); Iwan Cartwright (eight 9s and two 8s); Susmita Dutta (one 9, four 8s, four 7s and an A) and Agnes Pottage (three 8s and six 7s). We deliver the English curriculum for GCSEs, with the coveted Grade 9 the equivalent of A** denoting exceptional performance. Although University may seem a long way off when choosing GCSEs, choices at this stage directly impact options when it comes to A-Levels and University. This year’s excellent GCSE results follow our exceptional A-Level results where students achieved 76.3% at A*/A and 100% at A*/B with 100% pass rate yet again. Why not transfer to us for your GCSEs now? We have a few last-minute places left for this academic year so visit www.stclares-school.co.uk or call us on 01656 789966. Helen Hier, Head Teacher

CHASING THE DRAGON

BEING OR DOING?

God bless our seaside news For all its lovely views, Advertising just what we’re looking for, Images that help us to soar, Sunshine that brightens our day, Bright colours all along the way. What a diamond of publishing! It makes the hearts of readers sing. Seaside News You’re the bees knees! Philip Jones, Bridgend

Within the jaws, on fairest shores, a fiery king will reign, Bellowing fire, a quarry choir, mined slate for our Porth gain. Though slate ran slow the king did grow by adding to his tricks, His quarrymen began again and turned their hands to bricks.

They say we’re Human Beings, Which suggests we simply are, But as Human Doings We’ve really come quite far. Am I a Being or a Doing? I really hope I’m both. Being alive and doing well Would be my lifelong oath.

Their maiden’s hair was sunniest fair amidst the harvest hay, Like golden sand it graced the land at Abereiddi Bay. Her moistened lips passing the ships on dreamy shores maroon, Abundant sewn, her beauty shown, within her Blue Lagoon. Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl

By my creativity and lifestyle I cultivate that growth. Keep mind and body nourished, I’d hate to be a sloth. Judy Dee, Porthcawl (Inspired by Paul Casselle)

A WONDERFUL FRIEND We meet so many people, As we walk this age old path, Some old, some young, some miserable, And others who make us laugh. We’re lucky if we’ve families, To share our time of day, And all of us have Angels, To guide us on our way. But some of us are fortunate, And have a very special friend, To share in all life’s treasures, A bond that’ll never end. I’m one of those lucky people, And I’d like to let you know, How much you’re really valued, You’re a treasure I won’t let go! Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS Dark thoughts of the Future Dwell upon tranquility Like smooth, round pebbles in my hand. Trace their intricate designs, Through a vein of gleaming quartz. Hard, pristine, diamond lucre Set into the memory. Tales of travel through the land In search of Dissolute Rhymes, Of jewels of the Past The Future’s key unlocks these lines When glances at my palm I cast. Sally Richards, Porthcawl

FEATURES SOROPTIMISTS’ COVID SUMMER ACTIVITIES Bridgend Soroptimists were unable to enjoy their customary summer outing due to Covid restrictions. However a group of 18 ladies gathered at Coed-y-Mwstwr Hotel to take afternoon tea once restrictions were eased somewhat. Socially distanced over 4 separate tables, pictured here are part of the group enjoying a long awaited opportunity to meet up and share must missed company. Some members regularly collect a group of 6 local senior residents and host Sunday tea parties in their homes but have substituted this activity temporarily by delivering “Tea in a Box” directly to the homes of their guests who have been instructed to shelter during the current crisis. This was well received by the recipients. Monthly ZOOM meetings are being held until such time as free movement is permitted and the Heronston Hotel Bridgend are able to accommodate us once more. THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH We don’t often admit it, but our cash transactions and credit card accounts say a lot about our character and about what we value in life. Jesus puts it even more directly when he says that wherever our treasures are, our hearts are there also. The early church valued human life and human equality so much that they established a community of faith where no one suffered from material lack. They established a commune of equals, where value was placed not upon individual wealth, but upon contributing to the common good and distributing resources to everyone according to need, not greed. Human equality, shared resources, compassion, the common good, beloved Community, the realm of God, these were the community values of the earliest Christians. These were the community values that stood up to the institutionalised inequities and injustices of the Roman Empire. Does the story sound strangely familiar for our day and age? God Bless. Rev Lewis Rees Nottage General Baptist & Unitarian Chapel

A CALLOUT WITH A DIFFERENCE

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Jesus said ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” The nights are getting longer and the days are getting darker – but Jesus Christ is our light of hope whether the darkness is outside us or inside us. These are ‘dark times’ for many people; anxiety caused by the Coronavirus, worries about Brexit, some have lost their jobs or suffered a broken relationship, or heard some bad news about their health. Come to the light ! Come to Jesus out of all the darkness and uncertainty and find fresh hope, God’s love, and an inner peace that the world’s problems can never take away. It is too easy to let the darkness swallow us up. Jesus came to bring us the light of the love of God. Jesus is the light that can break into our darkness and show us a way forward. Call out to Him in prayer today and ask Him to shine His light in your life, or in the life of someone you know. If you want to find out more about Jesus contact me on faith@gilgal.co.uk. Rev. Martin Gillard BD MA (Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl).

Two of Porthcawl’s RNLI volunteers celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary during August. John and Marj Abraham had a special surprise when they answered the door at their Porthcawl home on the evening of their special day. Unknown to the couple members of the lifeboat station, both crew and fundraisers gathered at the end of their street for the 18:00 planned knock on the door. A spokes person said, ‘To say that it was a surprise to the happy couple is an understatement’. During the brief celebration Philip Missen MBE, Lifeboat Operations Manager, presented John with a ‘Letter of Thanks’ from RNLI Headquarters for his long and dedicated service as Chairman of Porthcawl Lifeboat Station. Marj was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a card of good wishes from members of the station along with a special cream tea from the crew. She was also thanked for her years of fundraising during which time she was known to be sat out on the promenade selling raffle tickets for her renowned patchwork quilts. Her efforts were not without results as over several years she raised in excess of £70,000 for Porthcawl lifeboat station. Ian Stroud

FEATURES TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE

We are grateful for all the tools donated during the last few months but as we were not open we were not able to process them. We are now open but with reduced staff to enable us to comply with Corona 19 virus working conditions. We are now able to process all these donations but it will take us some time, so could anyone with tools to donate please give us a few weeks before bringing them to the workshop, unfortunately we are unable to collect. This year we have only sent eleven kits to Malawi and no sewing machines at all. As we have not sent anything in the last four months we have to catch up on tool refurbishing however we are hoping to send some unrefurbished tools to our training partner SIDO in Tanzania where they have opened their own refurbishing workshop in conjunction with TFSR Cymru. Our next shipment will be to Ghana but do not expect this to happen until sometime in 2021. We have had to change our working conditions with social distancing, a dedicated washing area, face covering, six people only working and no tea break. PORTHCAWL VETERANS HUB On 15th August we held a socially distanced, VJ Day commemoration service at the Veterans Hub in Griffin Park. Invited members of the Hub, along with representatives from Porthcawl branch of the Royal British Legion and Porthcawl Town Council, including Mayor Brian Jones; were in attendance. Despite the limitation of 30 attendees due to Covid regulations; the need for social distancing and the awful weather, the event was a success. Members stayed on after the service for a chat and a fish and chip lunch. We are also pleased to announce we’ve been able to start holding Saturday morning meetings at the hub again. We’re restricted to 30 people and only able to gather outside; so reliant on fine weather, but members attending have really enjoyed the chance to chat and catch up (although from a distance!) Two meetings have been held so far, with all members happy to be able to socialise after such a long time away. Hopefully, we’ll be allowed to venture indoors sometime soon. If you’d like any information on the Porthcawl Veterans Hub please email us on porthcawlvh@outlook.com or come along and meet us on a Saturday morning. Louise Magenty Membership Secretary

PORTHCAWL U3A September may be the start of meteorological autumn but for me, it is when October comes in like John Keats’s ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ that I know that nights are drawing in and winter is around the corner! Writing that, brings to mind the big question, will winter bring a 2nd lockdown? While we hope not, the threat of it means we can only meet outside! Thankfully I can say we have managed some Walks, some Social Cycling Rides and even, by Zoom, our previously postponed Annual General Meeting. Thanks go to everyone who participated in that event either by attending or by sending in a vote to be counted, it was never going to be the same as similar events in the past, but it was good to hear from so many of you, almost as many as we would normally see. Thanks go to all who have volunteered to serve on the committee whether new or returning. We thank those retiring Margaret Williams for her years of working with the committee, Brian Thomas for his work as Secretary and also Stephen Jarvis for all his years of hard work with the Painting Workshop as he has decided now is the time to step back. Stay safe everyone. We’ll be back! Sally A Corbett Chair

PORTHCAWL NCI During the month of August we received 9 requests for assistance from UK Coastguard and 5 from RNLI lifeguards. We raised concerns to UK coastguard on 15 occasions and Porthcawl RNLI brought concerns to our attention 3 times. This resulted in 9 logged incidents and 29 monitored incidents ,including paddleboarders, open water swimmers, tidal cut offs and persons stuck in mud at the harbour entrance. We continue to work closely with local boating groups and the open water swimming community to maintain a safe environment for swimmers to enjoy their sport in the local waters around Porthcawl. As well as monitoring swimmers, we take the opportunity to broadcast swimmer warnings on VHF Ch 65 and to hoist appropriate “RY” signal warning flags as a visual indication that such activity is taking place. We gratefully received a donation of £1054 from a group of open water swimmers, the “Porthcawl Polar Bears,” in a presentation outside the tower. The team of 4 recently completed a relay swim of the English Channel to raise funds for Porthcawl NCI and Porthcawl RNLI Lifeboat, taking 13 hours 22 mins to complete the swim. During the pandemic donations to NCI have fallen significantly, so we appreciate the support. Thanks to Tom, Peter, Ros and Sian! Nick Weedon Media Officer

Deadline date for the November issue is: Thursday 15th October TRINITY CHURCH We have been delighted to meet each other again in person after such a long time. At the time of writing we have held 2 Sunday morning services at 10.30. We have had to limit places in the church to 36 seats due to the 2 metre spacing required for social distancing. We have not been able to join in singing the prerecorded hymns and recognising our friends can be difficult behind masks! Despite this we have enjoyed the return to fellowship and our safe practice arrangements have worked well. We also provide recordings of the services for those not able to attend and are performing live Zoom sessions. Please contact Teddy or the pastoral team via telephone, Facebook page or website for further details of our arrangements or to receive a link for the zoom services. Our Trinity Bargain Store continues to be held outside the church. We are also exploring other fund raising options for our Church Repair Appeal. We are sadly not able to resume any of our outside activities normally held in the hall but will review the situation in January. Please visit our Facebook page or website for any further information. Alison Meredith Thomas Communication Secretary www.trinitychurchporthcawl.org

PORTHCAWL ROTARY ROUND-UP

It’s official - The WHO Africa Region has been declared wild polio-free! This progress is the result of decades-long effort across the 47 countries which make up the WHO’s African region and now means that five of the six WHO regions, which represent 90% of the world’s population, will be free of wild polio. Rotary members have played an invaluable role in the effort to rid the African region of wild polio. After 30 years fund raising throughout the world, wild polio is now eradicated from Africa. This is a massive achievement for Rotary and the Bill Gates Foundation. Porthcawl Rotary President Andrew Singer would like to thank all those members for their past fund-raising efforts over the years in supporting “End Polio Now”. Sadly, the fight continues in 2 places, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where several cases were reported during the past year. Porthcawl Rotary continues to support “End Polio Now” with the grateful support from the Public at large although due to the Covid-19 pandemic, raising funds has become more difficult. World Polio Day is on 24th October 2020. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause please email Jeff Perren at: jeff@perrenpartners.co.uk Rtn Robert Lee

Child Arrangements during Covid 19? Where do you stand? With the restrictions that lockdown brought, we saw an influx in parents needing advice regarding the impact of Covd-19 on child arrangements. Just because it may not be possible for face to face contact to continue in some cases, parents can think creatively to ensure that the best possible arrangements for their children can continue. This can include the use of parenting apps, video calls or even remote contact via a contact centre. One of the sad bi-products of the pandemic is the increase in cases where children are alienated from one of their parents. Seeking specialist advice on the impact of alienating behaviours as well as the best possible legal solutions, is key to finding the best solution for you and your child.

Domestic Abuse – It is NEVER OK! Domestic Abuse has increased dramatically during the pandemic. It is extremely complex and it is not always the case that the police are able to assist with a prosecution where abuse has been perpetrated. It is in these types of circumstances that you may need a Non-Molestation Order and/or an Occupation Order. What is more – Legal Aid is available for these types of cases and if necessary an application can be made to court without the other party being given prior notice and can usually be done by telephone conference in a safe environment.

Social Services’ Involvement with the Family - Early Legal Advice can be key No parent ever wishes for social services to become involved with their children. Sadly however, circumstances can sometimes mean, that this is where you, as a parent, can find yourself and this is an increasing issue during the pandemic. It is scary and tremendously worrying and we are seeing more of these cases at this time. Legal aid is available for these cases and early advice is key and can avoid the local authority issuing proceedings.

LEGAL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Question: ‘DIY divorce’ is it really that simple? Answer: It is understandable why more and more people are choosing to apply for divorce online. A DIY divorce seems appealing if you want to cut down on solicitor’s fees. However, divorce is a complicated and emotional process, especially when finances are involved. One particular risk in a DIY divorce is filing the divorce Petition itself. Though the document may look simple, great attention needs to be taken to ensure all questions are answered correctly. This is typically the case when people base their divorce on ‘unreasonable behaviour’ or ‘adultery’. For example, people often forget that ‘adultery’ needs to be either admitted by your spouse or proved to the Court. In addition, a person can draft ‘unreasonable behaviour’ too mildly that the Court rejects the Petition altogether. Without legal knowledge, spouses can unknowingly overlook these issues, increasing the time divorce takes which can sour a relationship even further. Greater risk of a DIY divorce appears in situations where finances are involved. Even if you and your spouse agree on how to divide assets, without what the Court calls a ‘Clean Break Order’, your spouse can apply for a pension provision or lump sum payment from you in the future, even if you are divorced. Therefore, seeking professional legal advice whilst going through divorce is extremely important. Without the expert knowledge on drafting a ‘Clean Break Order’ and how to divide your finances fairly, you can risk more problems occurring in the future. Here at Melanie Lazarus and Co Solicitors, we have over 20 years of experience dealing with such matters. We will ensure all legal requirements are done correctly and reduce the stress by handling all aspects of your divorce and finances on your behalf. Melanie Lazarus, Melanie Lazarus & Co

MAKING A WILL AND INHERITANCE TAX PLANNING Why you should always have a Will in place and consider Inheritance Tax planning for the future. Given the strange and unprecedented times of Covid-19, people are taking stock of their affairs and ensuring they have a Will to represent their wishes and intentions. If you die without having made a Will, your assets are automatically distributed according to the Rules of Intestacy. This may well have undesired consequences. When making a Will, you should firstly consider who your executors will be. These are the people you trust to administer your estate according to your will. You should next consider who you want to benefit from your estate. Your spouse or partner is typically the first beneficiary, other beneficiaries may include children, relatives, friends, charities. Your Will can name classes of beneficiary (eg all your grandchildren). Gifts can be put in trust rather than made outright. For example, you might use a trust to control assets that are being passed to children (or young adults) or to individuals who are incapable of looking after their own financial affairs. When preparing a Will, we always consider the Inheritance Tax position of your estate. Inheritance Tax (IHT) is chargeable on your estate if it exceeds the IHT nil rate band (NRB) (currently £325,000). If you leave your residence to your children, you can claim an additional £150,000 (As of April 2019) known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB). Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on the value of your estate in excess of the nil rate sum. Effective planning can substantially reduce the amount of tax that will be payable on your estate. If your estate is likely to exceed the nil rate sum, it is worth discussing how family trusts and other planning options could benefit you. If your estate is valued at less than the nil rate band, IHT is not payable. Equally IHT is not payable on any inheritance you leave to your spouse. In addition, if your own estate does not use up the full nil rate sum, then your spouse’s tax free allowance on their death will be proportionately increased. The tax treatment of family trusts is complex and depends on the type of family trust being used. We can draft your Will and arrange for it to be signed in compliance with Government enforced lock down. Please do not hesitate to contact us. SEPARATION AND DIVORCE

SOLICITORS • CYFREITHWYR CONVEYANCING - Moving House? We offer a friendly and efficient service at a fixed price with all the work carried out by a qualified Solicitor Contact Mike Greenway for more information and a written quotation

Divorce is one of the most stressful and emotionally difficult life events. Getting the right advice can help guide you through the divorce process. At the point of separation, the family home can be an emotionally charged environment. You might want to leave the family home or you might want your partner to leave. However, before moving out, consider the following: • Do you or your partner have an alternative place to go, somewhere that meets your needs and your children’s needs? • What is best for your children? If possible, you should aim for as little upheaval as possible – so that the children can remain close to their school, their friends and their childcare. Being close to your support network and to your work will also be important. • Safety: if you are in an abusive relationship, your safety and your children’s safety should be your paramount concern. It is possible to apply to a divorce court for an occupation order, which is an order excluding your partner from the house. Should you consider this step necessary, specialist advice is crucial. For separating parents, sorting out the arrangements for their children can be highly emotionally charged, making it difficult to agree – particularly in the early stages. In time, hopefully the practicalities of child care can be discussed and agreed upon freely. If you still cannot come to an agreement then mediation should be considered. Counselling can also be very valuable in some cases, which you can attend together or separately. Speaking to someone about the breakdown of the relationship might help you put matters in perspective and make speaking with your expartner easier. You can also consider family therapy. Although there will be some circumstances where court intervention is required, going to court should be a last resort. Madeline Rand King Davies & Partners

FINANCE TIME TO PAY ATTENTION!

DON’T GIVE SHARE TIPS, ESPECIALLY TO YOUR DOCTOR!

So, let’s start with the actual facts: * 40 % of households in the UK can’t survive a month without income * FIVE MILLION Self-Employed workers don’t have access to sick pay * 75% of long-term absence is caused by non-critical illnesses (Source: www.cipd.co.uk ) Now, if you see yourself somewhere in these facts, then we need to talk. Many HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of families around the UK do not have the financial resources to survive a single month without income, so imagine what a disaster being out of work would be. Sudden illness, accidents or simply losing your job, all knock a massive hole in the family’s financial well-being, leading to often severe financial hardship for many. Often, it’s true that employers simply can’t afford to pay you if you’re off sick – and could you live on the £95-85 per week statutory sick-pay that you’d get without any other income? Of course not and then the bills don’t get paid and pressure builds on the family, even the mortgage goes unpaid and could lead to repossession. For self-employed people, they don’t get anything at all if they’re out of work, especially when illness strikes, so their problems can be even more severe, with all the stress that brings – and the last thing you need when you’re ill is even more stress or you’ll find your health getting worse. There’s no access to sick pay for self-employed of course, so no income really does mean no income, simple as that. Now, many of our readers will see themselves in these circumstances but don’t realise that a good Independent Financial Adviser can often help put measures in place, which are designed specifically to save you financially when the unexpected happens. A good quality, sound and affordable income protection arrangement can ensure you get money paid to you when the pressure of lost income descends upon you and your loved ones. We are proud to be able to offer the best policies that the financial services industry has available from a number of specialist providers and all you need do is pick up the phone and let us know what you think you may need – we’ll do the rest and provide you with the necessary information to help you put an affordable arrangement in place. The numbers you need are 01656 782545 / 07768 418308 – give us a call!

I’m often asked ‘what’s a good Stocks & Shares ISA this year’ or ‘what’s hot in the markets just now’? Everyone wants a better return on his or her hard earned cash. It’s a common question and the answer isn’t as easy as you might think. Following a trend can be dangerous especially if you’re late getting to the party. Over demand can cause a bubble in the markets and what was hot today will often be cold tomorrow. Take Elon Musk’s Tesla Car Company, the share price is up 500% since January it might carry on it’s meteoric rise but will it? I remember giving my doctor a share tip in a cutting edge stem cell research company which will go nameless, it was meant to go up by 300% of course it fell 50% and still falling last I looked, so I hope I don’t need a prescription any time soon! A clever way to look at the investment market is best described from the perspective of the world famous hockey player Wayne Gretzky. He wasn’t the biggest, he wasn’t the fastest, he wasn’t the strongest and people would ask him how he was the best hockey player in the world. He said “I don’t go where the puck is, I go where it’s going to go”. It’s a saying often borrowed by the corporate boys but well worth noting. So having said that it’s quite likely that the puck is headed straight to ESG Funds best known as Environmentally Socially Governed investment funds as it seems to be the way the world is going given the way things are and what people want. By the time we all buy into these funds the puck will be somewhere else. Of course, the best advice in the long term is always to diversify and spread your funds out into several sectors so the impact of Brexit and the Pandemic and the US Election are nullified as best as possible. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured against it. For investments, the value of units can fall as well as rise and you may not get back all your original investment. For pensions, this is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend on the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

GARDENING CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB October beautiful time of the year! What I call “change your mind month” a perfect time for moving shrubs and bushes, the ones that you thought would look right but on growth didn’t, honest my shrubs think they are on Zoopla! It is, of course, also bulb planting time, so joyous in the spring, the sooner you plant bulbs the better this month, whilst the soil is still warm, giving them an extra chance of settling in before winter. Leaves, how lovely on the trees but how awful on your lawn! The best way of dealing with them is to mow them; this will cut them to shreds and make them easier to rot down. Clear up fallen rose leaves to stop nasty diseases like black spot from overwintering this avoids the spread of the fungi but don’t compost them! When harvesting cabbages, leave the root in the ground, make a cut in the stem thus encouraging a flush of new baby leaves, very tasty! Did you know – Figs are not always considered vegan, the fig is pollinated by a wasp, the fig flower traps the wasp and the enzymes in the flower digest the copse – quite puts you off! Chris Early

PORTHCAWL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Due to the restrictions on public gatherings presently in force and for the foreseeable future we have cancelled the AGM and the Christmas Flower Arrangement meetings. The accounts will be prepared and audited in the usual way. Copies will be held by the Committee for members to read. Also, since the Society’s activities, meetings and visits, have been curtailed we have decided to cancel this year’s subscriptions. Any members who have recently paid will get a refund from a Committee member or the Stores. On a more optimistic note, looking to the future as all gardeners must do, the Stores are now well stocked. Aquadulce broad beans, Senshyu Japanese onions and five varieties of garlic, both softneck and hardneck, plus elephant garlic are available. We have the 2021 NSALG seed catalogues offering the full range of King’s seeds at almost half retail prices. Order forms must be in by Nov 4th. Frank Fulgoni

LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

October is here again and autumn in the garden is a very busy time. It’s time to cut back perennials and divide to increase your stock. Move tender plants into the greenhouse away from frost. Daffodil, narcissi, crocus bulbs to be planted and autumn mulches to be applied. The last cuts of the lawn and autumn dressings can be applied. Spring cabbages can be planted out too, so much to do before winter is upon us. The Gardening Club continues to be closed for events, but the Committee is busy compiling an Annual Report to send out to the membership as an AGM cannot be held under present Government Guidelines. Our Competition was a popular distraction in September and the results are as follows: Best Flower Bed - Martin Edey; Best Veg or Allotment plot - Boby & Jo Thomas; Best Rose Bloom - Lucy Bloomfield; Best Dahlia Bloom - Sylvia Davies; Best Hanging Basket - Sue Ford; Best Photograph depicting Lockdown - Joanne Tibbs.

Deadline date for the November issue is: Thursday 15th October

ARTS STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Due to the printing schedule, I couldn’t put this personal tribute in the September issue of Seaside News to local rock singer Phil Jones who passed away in August. I first met Phil when he joined my band briefly in 1978. In subsequent years our music careers ran parallel, rivals but great mates. He was a regular guest when I had my own radio show and was always fun to have on. His bands included Chartered Hurricane and more recently Big Fat Blues Band, but it is rock band Sex that made him famous, where he wrote and released ten albums. A talented guitarist and songwriter, he also ran the Performing Arts course in Bridgend College where many famous bands have gone through the ranks thanks to Phil. On stage an eccentric front man, off stage a shy, modest, gentle giant. The thousands of tributes on social media and the huge send-off at his funeral proves how loved he was by family, friends and fans. I’m so proud to have known him as a dear friend and we won’t forget you, Phil, your music will live forever! Until me meet again – Forever Rock! A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

Filming has resumed on ‘The Mystery of the Llandow Air Disaster’ production, and in the last few weeks there have been two trips to London to shoot scenes connected with the Avro Tudor 5 airliner and its crew, for while the seventy-five passengers who died in the crash all lived in South Wales, the five crew members came from elsewhere, chiefly in and around London. Research had established where the pilot, Captain Dennis Parsons, and the airhostess, Daphne Davidson, were living at the time of the tragedy, and these became significant locations. The aircraft itself was based at Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire, although it was maintained at Langley aerodrome near Slough, and it was from there that it took off on its ill-fated flight. But 44 | seaside news

Email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk whereas Blackbushe is still an airport, Langley has mostly been built over, although part of it is still open space and forms the north-west corner of a golf course, so that was included on the list. With the distant locations accomplished, filming has now resumed in South Wales and will continue to do so through the coming months, although restrictions could halt it again at any time. RETURN TO TRAINING FOR PEN Y BONT SLSC

TIDES High Tide: Larger Number (m)

Low Tide: Lower Number (m)

OCT NOV 2020

SPORT

Pen y Bont SLSC began weekend patrols of Ogmore by Sea beach, in line with government Covid safety regulations, in July and two months later we can safely say that they have been hugely successful. Not only have the patrols been a taste of normality, they have enabled our senior and junior members to practise their surf lifesaving skills, keep members of the public safe, and bring people together after a long few months of very little contact with each other. Junior members have performed rescues in the river and senior NVBLQ holders have done an excellent job of organising useful patrols that support and work alongside the RNLI. With the new regulations in Wales indicating that groups of people can now meet up for socially distanced exercise outside, training has (finally!) been able to resume for Pen y Bont. Volunteer coaches and our committee members have worked hard to create sessions and timetables that allow our nipper and junior members to train across two or three sessions each Saturday and Sunday respectively at Ogmore beach. The sessions have been great! Lots of our members were very keen to get back into training and they have loved being able to get back in the sea, see their friends and gain a little fitness. With the pools scheduled to start reopening in September, we hope that as the summer changes to winter we can carry on training our brilliant members and, despite all the challenges thrown our way this year, come back fit for next season. Meriel Clode
