PALLIATIVE CARE PORTHCAWL

REGENERATION

Dear Editor, Sadly my dad recently passed away and for his last days he was determined to come out of hospital to go home to his own home, albeit we had nothing in place to assist his wish. I have to admit I was more than a little anxious, he needed palliative care, how would my husband and I provide the care he needed to ensure dad’s last days were the best they could be. We brought him home just after lunch an hour later my concern was gone the ‘team’ had arrived, one after the other came the Community nurses, Macmillan nurse and Marie Curie support nurses, they cared for him, nursed him, arranged the practical stuff, reassured us, provided emotional support (and hugs whenever needed), for those last few days there was banter, jokes, advise, support, we all laughed and cried together, coming home was completely the right thing to do. We had no idea these teams were there for us. They see their work as a privilege and how many of us can say that? Thanking them just doesn’t seem enough, so wanted to spread the word they are amazing. We will be donating to these charities as a legacy to Leonard Ivens. With wholehearted thanks ladies. Dear Editor, I entirely agree with the Civic Trust’s article in the local paper criticising BCBC’s recent proposals for the regeneration plans for Porthcawl. I am opposed to the building of houses and high-rise flats on Salt Lake on the grounds that we will lose our main car park. This is a prime site and the lovely open view across Salt Lake would be lost forever. In addition you could imagine visitors travelling along Eastern Prom and sighting these high-rise flats and the image of Porthcawl would not be enhanced. In the summer, Salt Lake is the main car park in Porthcawl. With its closure, hundreds of cars would be prevented from coming into Porthcawl, as there would be no car parking spaces available. The loss of hundreds of motorists would have a serious and drastic effect on the trade and prosperity of the town. Unfortunately BCBC is completely unaware that car parks are essential, vital and important and the lifeline of any town or city and especially in a major seaside resort. Referring to car parks, it would be interesting to know what happened to the money that BCBC collected over the years from our car parks. BCBC definitely did not spend it on Porthcawl as indicated by the state of the broken paving slabs on Eastern Prom and the unpainted seats on the seafront which are in a disgraceful condition. Over the last 40 years, BCBC has submitted many plans for the regeneration of Porthcawl. Unfortunately they were mainly pointless and worthless and of no benefit to Porthcawl. Luckily none of their proposals materialised. Prior to 1974 Salt Lake was owned by the people of Porthcawl via the old Porthcawl Council and was always considered a treasured piece of land and we must fight to keep it so. Your views NEW SURGERY COMPLEX IN PORTHCAWL Dear Editor, I understand that the new multi million pound health complex which the advance publicity has informed us is to cater for the needs of residents of Porthcawl, plus residents of South Cornelly and owners of caravans in the resort, some of whom are resident on Trecco Bay site for ten months of the year, is due to open February 2019. However, patients seeking doctor’s appointments in Porthcawl at present results in 90-year-old patients queuing outside the surgery at 6.45am, in the rain to be sure of getting an appointment when the surgery opens at 8.00am. On the morning I arrived at 7.10am there were already eight people in the queue. This morning I attempted to contact the surgery by phone from 8.10am. Eventually when the phone was answered I found all appointments were gone. According to my conversation with a very helpful member of staff there were only two doctors available that day but there would be more tomorrow. National shortage of GP’s. This we continually hear daily in the press and on television applies to all of Wales. As a resident of Porthcawl, how is a multi million pound stylish new building with a view of the duck pond rather than of the car park going to improve the health facilities I need to access in Porthcawl I ask. Moving a service which the management of our present facilities is unable to improve, due to circumstances out of their control, to a posh new building ...without the ability to increase the doctors operating from the new facility is nothing more than moving the deckchairs on the Titanic. To date, there has been no information, other than a public relations exercise during the planning application debate as to what looks at this time little more than a “white elephant”. You cannot run a school without teachers or a GP surgery without doctors. The postwar Labour Government introduced the NHS service in 1948 when farmers ploughed their fields with horses, most houses in Wales had outside toilets, no hot running water and the only houses in a village with telephones were the local doctor and police Officer, coal was ten shillings a sack (50p) and was rationed to one sack per household. Today, the medical profession can produced babies in test tubes, transplant hearts, lungs and kidneys, and operate using keyhole surgery.... things that in 1948 politicians would think as science fiction...but the system whereby patients access the basis health system as had no major update from that initially introduce at the conception of the service...if there has it has been totally unsuccessful. There are already forward thinking development plans, which will increase the number of residents in the town with the present GP service already unable to cope. It is now time for whoever sanctioned the spending of millions of pounds of public money to assure those who will need to use the facility that our already over stretched GP services can be improved. STAY CLOSE TO EUROPE Dear Editor, I am in my eighties and I remember the bombs dropping in Manchester in 1940/41. I was a child and it was terrifying. Those who have not experienced war cannot comprehend how lucky we are to have had peace for over 70 years. We are kept safe because we are in Europe. The European Project that Winston Churchill believed in so passionately is at the centre of this. It may not be perfect but in all those years, like a family, we have not been dragged into war with our neighbours. If only for this reason I think we should stay close to Europe. Personally, I would rather stay in Europe, but at the very least we should all have a say in what happens next. I have heard on the news the idea of a people’s vote on any deal that Theresa May agrees with Europe. I am all for this. M. Jones Bridgend

PLASTIC IN SCHOOLS Dear Editor, The time has come for children to return to school and that includes my youngest daughter Tian who started comprehensive school for the first time. I don’t intend to name and Shane the school, however, I was very disappointed when my daughter came home from school and her very first piece of homework was to cover several of her school books with a transparent piece of plastic. I would have thought that the books would have been made strong enough to eliminate the covering of them with plastic, which as most people know is no good for the environment. Your views RE: SHIFT IN NUMBER OF CONSTITUENCIES TO ‘REMAIN’ IN THE EU Dear Editor, I cannot be the only person interested to hear the result of recent polling showing that 112 more constituencies across the United Kingdom, who previously backed Leave, are now in favour of remaining in the EU. This public opinion shift means that there is now a majority of constituencies in the UK which back remaining in the EU! This is true of our part of Wales, within the County Borough of Bridgend with its constituencies of Bridgend and Ogmore. A YouGov poll which sampled a total of 15,340 people, in the months of June and July, showed that Bridgend’s Remain vote had risen by nearly 5% taking it up to 55.6 % Remain and Ogmore’s Remain vote had risen by over 8% to 48.4% Remain. Overall, based on the results of this poll, Bridgend County Borough is now firmly Remain! Looking at the bigger picture, within Wales as a whole, 25 out of 40 seats are now Remain! Encouragingly, in the light of this shift of public opinion, many of our MPs are fully supportive of a final say; we now need to convince the remainder to support the increasingly louder calls for a People’s vote. As Eloise Todd CEO of Best for Britain commented: “This groundbreaking research shows that Brexit is still not inevitable. People across Wales have witnessed the last two years of uncertainty with dismay and are thinking differently –

MINI MYSTERIES This month, I would like to share some exciting book news with you. Within a month of publication my Victorian novel, Saving Grace, which is set in Sker and Porthcawl, became an official Amazon #1 bestseller in Australia. I think it is remarkable that readers in Australia have taken to a story set in the Seaside News locality, so far away from their homeland. The book has also sold well in Canada and is currently number thirty-eight in America. An audiobook version of Saving Grace is in production along with translations into ten languages including French, Italian, Japanese and Finnish. It is exciting to think that people will be reading about Victorian Sker and Porthcawl in their own languages. In the coming months the possibility of adapting the novel into a screenplay will be explored. Who knows, maybe in the future a film crew will turn up to film the novel amongst the sand dunes of Kenfig and the streets of Porthcawl. Next month, I will return with another mini mystery. Local history PORTHCAWL’S VICTORIAN DOCK

THE NAMES OF PORTHCAWL

2018 marks the bicentenary of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the birth of an engineer who made an impact on Porthcawl. The work of Robert Pearson Brereton (1818-1894) was celebrated on Saturday 15 September when a plaque was unveiled by the ICE Wales Cymru chair; Sarah Jones, and Cllr. John McCarthy, mayor of Bridgend CBC at the Harbour Bar and Kitchen. Brereton would design the new Porthcawl coal dock with an entrance lock at the north side of the existing tidal basin with a new southern entrance and pier and an extension of the breakwater. Prior to the 15th September 1859 Brereton had been Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s senior assistant and with Brunel’s death Brereton was tasked with finishing his works including the Llynvi Valley Railway from the Maesteg district to Bridgend and on to Porthcawl but he would also undertake new projects of his own, including the new dock which opened on 22 July 1867 at a cost of £250,000. In 1906 coal exporting finished and Porthcawl went from dock port to seaside resort with Brereton’s inner dock being filled in (Salt Lake) around the Second World War period. Stephen K. The etymology of some of the places in an around Porthcawl speaks volumes of its history. Newton in Welsh is ‘Drenewydd yn Notais’, which simply means ‘new Nottage’. Nottage, the oldest part of Porthcawl, comes from the Welsh ‘Notais’ meaning ‘the pollard ash tree’. This suggests the village, built on a hill above the level of the wilderness, cut the tops of the trees off to have a clearer view of the sea. Nottage was a Saxon town designed to defend itself from the Vikings, so cutting the trees would create a tactical lookout point. Yet the Vikings arrived, and left their influence as well, such as Sker Rocks. In Old Norse ‘Sker’ means ‘a rock in the sea’, deriving from Proto-Indo-European roots meaning ‘cut’, suggesting it was cut from the mainland. ‘Tusker Rock’ is, also, named after Tuska, a Dane whose fellow Vikings colonised a lot of the Vale of Glamorgan. Porthcawl’s name has many interpretations. Porth is a common Welsh prefix; In this case meaning ‘port’. The second element, ‘-cawl’ could be referring to the Gaulish people, or even suggesting Porthcawl was a harbour for Frankish and Norman knights. A more common interpretation is that Porthcawl means ‘port of sea kale’. Joseph Audsley

A Level Performance 2018

• All students achieved 5 or more A* - G grades, with 89.2% getting 5 or more A* - C • 75% of the group achieved the L2+ which is 5 or more A* - C including English and Maths • The core subjects of English, Maths and Science returned the best results in Bridgend • A* - C pass rates: English 89.2%, Maths 77.6%, Science 82.3% • The Welsh Baccalaureate performance was a staggering 96.6% pass.

The percentage of pupils achieving 5 A* - C (Level 2) improved to a fantastic 89%. The number of pupils who gained 5 A* - C (which includes English and Maths), improved by almost 10% to an outstanding 75%. Those who gained 5 A*/A grades improved to 35.8% which will compare most favourably both locally and nationally. The most exceptional performance was that of the English Department where the A* - C (Level 2) outcome was an incredible 88%. We are delighted to report that the following pupils who achieved 10 or more A* grades; Georgina Anderson, Isabel Appleton, Joshua Audsley, Sam Gilbert, Harrison Lewis, Matthew Pugh, Sunil Vummiti, Ioan Williams and Sarah Wynne. The top performing pupils include a staggering 53 students who achieved 8 or more GCSEs at A* / A; too many to list individually, but many congratulations to them all, as well as to all those students who worked so hard to achieve their potential.

So many of our year 11 pupils have achieved excellent results, with 60 per cent of our pupils achieving the Level 2 threshold including English and Maths, and 98 per cent the Level 1 threshold. There are a large number of outstanding sets of results, including pupils who have gained A*/A grades in all of their subjects and those who have achieved the highest grades in their BTEC and Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate. We look forward to welcoming those who are returning to our sixth form and for those who have chosen to follow other pathways, we wish you all the very best.

We have all returned to school following the summer break eager to begin the new school year. The term has started with our school elections. Children prepared their manifestos for the various committees we have in school. Children voted for their peers to represent them on the School Council, Sports Council, Eco-Committee, Crew Cymraeg and Digital Leaders. NEWTON PRIMARY SCHOOL We have had a wonderful start to the new term. It has been lovely to see all the children come to school happy every day and eager to learn. We are proud that our school is a happy, safe and stimulating learning environment where children achieve high standards. As a green category school we achieve excellent results year on year and continue to perform above local and national averages. September kicked off to a wonderful start with exciting innovation days, these included a fantastic trip to Brean Sands Amusement Park for Key Stage 2. This was a brilliant start to their topic on rollercoasters. This project has a science focus and teaches children about a range of forces. In the Innovate Stage, children apply their skills and understanding by building roller coasters and showcasing them to others. We also took part in The Macmillan Coffee Morning. We had a wonderful turn out, with lots of family members coming along to support an amazing charity. We were also thrilled to see so many members of the local community take up our invitation to join us for tea, cake and songs! ST CLARE’S SENSATIONAL EXAM RESULTS

Sixth Form students from St. Clare’s, Porthcawl celebrated another year of excellent A-Level results that trumped the national picture. A superb 78% of grades achieved were A*/B compared to 52% nationally while 16% were A* (almost double the national results). The 2018 A-Level grades build on the excellent results seen in previous years and continue the theme with a 100% pass rate for five consecutive years. This year, 40.5% of grades were at A*-A, 78.4% at A*-B and 92% at A*-C, compared to the national average of 26.3%, 52% and 76.3% respectively. A staggering 95.6% of GCSE grades achieved were 4+ (A*-C) while 51.3% of grades awarded were 7+ (A*/A), compared to 61.6% and 18.5% respectively across Wales. Almost a third of all grades were 8 or 9, the latter being the equivalent of an A** to show exceptional performance. The bespoke state of the art Sixth Form Centre is now complete and our Y12 students were extremely excited when we announced their all-expenses paid trip to Barcelona at half-term. It’s hard to believe that we’re not long back after our summer break as so much has happened. It’s been lovely to welcome our children and families back and to meet our new nursery children who are all settling in to ‘Gwern’ class well. The children have seen a number of visitors, Bridget Bee has been to reward our year 3 class for their excellent ‘kerbcraft’ work last term, Anwen from Boomerang TV came in to hold workshops with years 5 and 6 and Leon of Fit Cymru spoke to years 3-6 about healthy living and the sporting opportunities available through the Urdd and Matt from the Fire Service has spoken to years 2 and 5. The Menter, Urdd French, Spanish, rugby and netball clubs have all re-started & it’s great to see how well attended they are. We will be saying a very sad farewell to our Deputy Head teacher Mr Gareth Davies this term. Mr Davies will be leaving us after nine very happy years at Ysgol y Ferch o’r Sgêr. He has been a great asset to the school with his energy and passion for music and all things Welsh. We all wish him the very best in future.

It has been a busy start to the autumn term at Cynffig. We’ve hosted our annual Presentation Evening where pupils across the whole school were recognised for their hard work, dedication and commitment to work and school life. Dr Andrew Workman guest speaker and ex head boy inspired both pupils and parents in describing his journey from year 7 Cynffig pupil to the Doctor he is today. Boys from years 7 to 11 sung their hearts out in a workshop conducted by leaders and a member of the Only Boys Aloud choir. The boys had great fun participating in challenges aimed at developing their voices and teamwork. In sport our year 8 and 9 Rugby boys won their first matches of the season against Porthcawl and Isabelle Anderson Year 9 was successful in being selected to play Netball for the County. ARCHBISHOP MCGRATH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL This year, we threw down the gauntlet for Year 11 to meet the GOAT challenge and make their results the Greatest Of All Time. They triumphed and the group lived up to the school’s high expectations, achieving the best results in the school’s history. Every child can be justifiably proud that they were an integral part of this achievement. In Year 13 there were amazing performances with over a third of results at A grade and above. They have not just set the bar high in terms of examination performance but the service they have given our school community. Local news AUTOMATED GATE RISKS Amongst all the furore surrounding Brexit, it’s important that other issues are not sidelined. Since 2010, following the death of a child in Bridgend who was killed by an automated gate, I have worked with Gate Safe to ensure no more accidents or fatalities occur due to unsafe gate installation. Lifts are routinely checked and maintained every six months to ensure they are safe to use. Currently there is no statutory requirement for a qualified person to install automated gates nor an obligation to ensure they are inspected and maintained. This is despite the increased use of such gates in schools hospital residential and business settings. I hosted a roundtable meeting with Gate Safe and senior leaders of industry bodies. We discussed future steps needed to ensure improves safety of automated gates. Gate Safe offers training and practical guidance to do just that. I am supporting the group in pressing the Government to legislate to ensure all gates are installed safely and have regular certified maintenance. The next few years are going to be our most challenging yet as we are forced to consider important areas such as schools and nursery education, social services for children, older residents and disabled people, and more. SOLID PROGRESS ON NEW SEA DEFENCES Good weather and calm seas have helped Porthcawl’s all-new sea defences to make great progress. Like a giant jigsaw puzzle, the £3m project involves 185 new terraces being set in place to protect 260 seafront properties and businesses from flooding and coastal erosion. Each piece weighs between four tonnes and a hefty 20 tonnes, which explains the giant crane you may have spotted on the seafront! And of course, all of the work needs to be carried out in line with the tide times. It’s such a complicated marine engineering project and I’m sure you’ve been as fascinated as me seeing it all taking shape. At the time of writing, less than a quarter of the terraces are left to be installed, thanks to the excellent conditions created by the summer heatwave. When complete, the terraces will be joined by a sand-coloured hard surface to create an attractive, all-new look over the coming months which will be very different to the infamous ‘tarmac beach’ but will do just as good a job in protecting the seafront from the battering it takes from powerful storm surges. We are grateful for the Welsh Government funding we received in support of this initiative. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Last year, local residents recycled enough food waste to power a typical school for over four years! So, most local people are avid food recyclers, but there’s still room to do better! On average, 18 per cent of rubbish found in a typical Bridgend County Borough bin bag is food waste, which could have been recycled into something useful instead. The food waste that you recycle through your weekly collections gets turned into a farming fertiliser and electricity once it has been processed at the local Agrivert anaerobic digestion plant in Stormy Down. As well as food leftovers, we all produce a certain amount of unavoidable food waste that can’t be eaten, but can be recycled, such as tea bags, fruit and veg peelings, eggshells, and meat bones. All of those can be put into your brown food waste recycling caddies, as can pet food. Don’t forget to delve into the back of your fridge to pick out any out of date food you find as this can be recycled too – just remove any packaging first and recycle that as well. Local news VISIT TO THE BRACKLA MARIE CURIE SHOP Last month, it was great to visit the Marie Curie shop in Brackla to speak to the store manager and to meet some of the volunteers who give up their time to support the charity. At the shop, they sell ladies, men’s and children’s clothing, shoes, handbags, homeware, books, DVDs and children’s toys. It was interesting to hear about the type of goods donated and how they are processed, priced and sold. The manager told me that books and DVDs sell very well. On one occasion, they had four copies of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ by Dan Brown. Also, birthday cards sell very well. Sometimes, people can bring in unexpected items. For example, the manager said that someone had brought in a Radley Bag, which had proved very popular, and that one lady had brought in a lovely green ball gown that had been snapped up as soon as it was on display. The charity plays a remarkable role providing help and assistance for people who need it the most at the time they need it the most. I would like to thank the volunteers for all their work. DEMENTIA Dementia can be distressing to both those who are affected and their families so anything that lightens the load is very welcome. It was a pleasure to support the launch of the Villages Project recently, which is seeking to make the communities of Cefn Cribwr, Kenfig Hill, Pyle and Cornelly dementia friendly. Originating with the Alzheimer’s Society, this local programme is run by a steering committee, which includes volunteers who are dementia champions. A central focal point is the Memory Lane Café run by Louise Barham, which meets in Pyle Life Centre each Friday morning. I enjoyed a visit there and spoke to those with dementia and their carers. The aim of the Villages Project is to raise awareness of how dementia affects people and how making small changes in the way shops and businesses are run can make life so much easier. They have already approached small local businesses and provided information sessions for staff – it only takes 45 minutes - and hope that bigger businesses like supermarkets will also come on board. I have done the session myself and can say that little changes can make massive differences to those with dementia. 2018 is the Year of the Sea and although summer is over, we’ve had a busy few weeks. Next month will be a busy month for the Independent Alliance led Porthcawl Town Council (PTC) as we look at ways in which to tackle the continued reductions in funding for basic community services. Our ten-pledge programme is well on track. We are now focused on the next stage of Bridgend County Borough Council’s (BCBC) impending cuts, which means reducing resources to non-statutory services for Porthcawl. We have been notified by BCBC that unless PTC take over public toilet facilities within the town then the Griffin Park and John Street facilities will be closed in January 2019. Taking these facilities over is one thing, however. The chronic lack of maintenance of these facilities by BCBC over the years means that Griffin Park needs to be rebuilt and John Street, which is a listed building, requires substantial internal works. PTC is being very proactive and having agreed to transfer Griffin Park toilets to the council under the Community Asset Transfer programme back in October 2016 talks with BCBC are still on-going. A huge frustration for Town Councillors is that BCBC have to approve the schemes and we still have some projects waiting for approval some eight years later. Club features TEA PARTY FOR THE ELDERLY

The annual tea party, organized by the Rotary Club of Porthcawl, was held recently at All Saints’ Church Hall, Porthcawl. Residents from Porthcawl care homes Picton Court, Monkstone House, Pinehurst and Danygraig, enjoyed a traditional tea that included sandwiches, a great selection of cakes and even jelly and custard, reminiscent of the tea parties of the past. President Denzil Gould welcomed everyone, then the afternoon began with a singalong to some of the old familiar songs and this was followed by some sessions of Bingo, which everyone enjoyed. Tea followed and the guests tucked into the delicious food that was prepared and served by Rotarians and there was more than enough for everyone. A free raffle concluded the afternoon and everyone left having had a lovely afternoon of food and fun. Rtn. Carol Llewellyn, Chair of Community Committee, expressed her gratitude to all Rotarians who had worked to make the afternoon such a success, the ladies who made the delicious cakes and to the Rector, Canon Philip Masson, who supports the tea party and allows it to be held at the Church Hall every year.

The early Christian church valued human equality so much that they established a community where no one should suffer from poverty. They established a community in which value was placed not upon individual wealth, but upon contributing to the common good, which they then distributed to everyone according to need. Human equality; shared resources; public compassion; no one left behind; all for the common good. We are called to be a ‘Beloved Community’, to be the eyes, ears, hands, and feet of God. These were the community values of the early church. They were the community values that stood as a powerful corrective to the inequities and injustices of the Roman Empire, and these were values that were violated by Ananias and Sapphira as told in the Biblical ‘Book Acts of the Apostles’. I would like to thank all the people who have donated tools or had tools collected, we have been very busy refurbishing your tools for carpentry and mechanical kits for Ghana; these are being shipped out later this month. In August we had a sale day at the Lions Classic car show on the Porthcawl rugby field. We save anything automotive and other random items that are not required for kits for this show. All money raised supports our group. We also send a donation to head office to contribute to the transportation costs of the tools container that is sent to Africa. It was a very busy day; people were able to purchase tools for a very low cost, as we do not like to take anything back to our workshop, storage space being a problem. A surprise awaiting many people attending the Bridgend Princess of Wales hospital over the past two months has been the Porthcawl Shout Forum exhibition to honour the emergence services that took part in the 1947 Samtampa and Edward Princes of Wales disaster. In a hurricane force storm 47 seamen died at Sker Point Porthcawl when the Liberty ship SS Samtampa and Mumbles Lifeboat, Edward Princes of Wales were both lost with all hands. This tribute to those that have to deal with the trauma of such disasters was opened in the hospital atrium by our project Patron Carwyn Jones AM and later moved to the main hospital arterial corridor All the emergency services covering South Wales both then and now were represented with Coast Guard Commander, George Crumpler travelling from Aberystwyth to attend. The Merchant Navy also attended plus the Mayors and consorts of Bridgend County Borough Council, Bridgend and Porthcawl together with Borough Council Leader Cllr Huw David and members of his Cabinet. Porthcawl Shout Forum would like to express their gratitude to everyone attending this commemoration of our coastal heritage and we are indebted to our ABMU Health Board for their help and especially hospital director Jamie Marchant. BRIDGEND RAMBLERS Bridgend Ramblers have just published their walks programme for the autumn and winter taking us through to the end of March 2019. Our programme offers a variety of walks of varying levels of difficulty and distances appealing to walkers of all abilities. Each Sunday we typically offer three walks – long (10+ miles), medium (8+ miles) and short (~5 miles). The walks are also categorised as Easy, Moderate and Hard; these categorisations are open to interpretation, hard walks are not aimed at beginners! Our Sunday walks meet at Bridgend ‘Rec’ car park and we drive to the start point. Long walkers leave at 09:00 and the others at 09:30. Every other Tuesday we have a medium walk that meets at either Pencoed or Pyle Swimming Pools and leave at 09:00. Alternate Thursdays we meet at 10:30 for a leisurely stroll of about 3 miles, meeting at the start point of the walk. Details are emailed on the Tuesday before the walk. Rambling isn’t just about walking though, we pride ourselves on the social aspects of the activities and can only emphasise the numerous health benefits. We offer a three walks for free introduction. NATIONAL COASTWATCH INSTITUTION – PORTHCAWL 656 hours watchkeeping were undertaken during August. We dealt with 7 logged incidents and monitored 14 others. We logged and monitored 207 commercial vessels, 654 leisure vessels, 2 military and 35 others. Further to our collaboration with Porthcawl RNLI and their initiative surrounding the use of high visibility floats by open water swimmers in the bay and harbour entrance, we are introducing the use of signal flags at the lookout. We will fly the flag combination “RY” which is a yellow cross on a red background and red and yellow diagonal stripes, when swimmers are in the water. This flag hoist is a recognised signal within the “International Code of Signals” and means “you should proceed at slow speed when passing me”. This will be flown when we sight swimmers within the harbour entrance area and provides a visual warning to boat owners to exercise caution and maintain a good lookout. Thanks to the generosity of the public we raised £600 from our recent bucket collection. Congratulations to Viv Sanders, Jen Haakonsen and Roger Flitter who recently passed their final assessments and are now qualified watchkeepers. THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES Have you met Madison Perry yet? Madison is from Texas, USA, and is the Missional Links Wales intern at Gilgal Baptist Church from September to June. Her role will be to work alongside the Children’s, Youth and Family Pastor Steve Lock and encourage our children and young people in their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Madison will be found at Gilgal’s ‘Carers and Toddlers’ group in the hall at Woodland Avenue on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10.30am, at Youth Club on Friday evenings in Park Avenue, taking part in School Assemblies along with Pastors Steve and Martin, and in church on Sunday Mornings at Park Avenue from 10.30a-12noon. It is a huge commitment for a young woman from America to devote a year of her life to helping the churches here in Wales. Madison already has a qualification in child care from America, but is also taking some time to study and deepen her faith while she is here in Wales, it’s called the Caleb Course and is equivalent to an A Level qualification which includes practical assessment and review of her work with Gilgal Baptist Church. Porthcawl U3A is a flourishing self-help organisation providing a broad range of locally hosted educational, creative and leisure activities within a friendly, supportive community. Here in Porthcawl we’ve a large and flourishing U3A of around 500 members and this autumn a host of activities and events from which to choose. A programme that includes talks, walks, outings and friendly coffee mornings. Truly something for every taste. Last month alone there were some 94 meetings of interest groups at venues across Porthcawl covering 41 different activities from creative writing to crafts; painting to photography; singing to scrabble. Some are long established groups, others are new, such as our phenomenally popular Mindfulness & Meditation group; and there’s our Wildlife group, focusing our awareness on the abundant natural beauty, which surrounds us. So as the evenings get darker, cast off those October blues come give us a try at Porthcawl U3A, make new friends, learn, laugh and live! Porthcawl St. Sébastien Town Twinning Association has had a busy few months. In July, we had fun at the Porthcawl Carnival and celebrated la Fête Nationale (the French National Day which marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille - 14 July 1789). In August, we held a wonderful afternoon tea, which brought together members of other local twinning associations. We have also just returned from another fantastic trip to France, which included an evening ‘à la bonne franquette’, where we enjoyed a simple meal with cheese, charcuterie and wine and a musical soirée with crêpes, where Welsh and French musicians played side by side. The visit also included a badminton day, which brought together players from the badminton clubs of Porthcawl and St. Sébastien in a friendly competition. Six young players from Porthcawl (aged 16-26) accompanied members of the association on the visit, building yet more friendships between the two communities. Many more twinning events have been planned ahead of the twentieth anniversary celebrations next year. DWARF STARS

PAWS

Most stars are much smaller than our Sun. They are so feeble that even those nearest to us are invisible to the naked eye. Of the nearest thirty stars to the Sun, twenty are red, brown or white dwarfs. Our closest neighbour is Proxima Centauri, which is red dwarf complete with at least one planet orbiting it and possibly more waiting to be discovered. Interestingly, the 4th closest star system to us was only discovered in 2013. It’s a pair of very faint brown dwarfs named Luhman 16 that were discovered by orbiting infrared telescopes. Brown dwarfs are less massive than their red counterparts and have failed to begin the process of nuclear fusion that causes larger stars to shine. The nearest white dwarf star is actually in a tight orbit around the brightest star in the sky - Sirius. Known as “The Pup”, Sirius B is a star that has ended nuclear fusion and has become a stellar remnant. It has the same mass as the Sun but is the same size as the Earth. This is the ultimate fate of most stars including our own which in 5 billion years time will expand into a red giant before collapsing into a white dwarf. Clive Down FRAS

PORTHCAWL’S NEWEST HELM CALLED INTO ACTION Porthcawl RNLI’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose Of The Shires was launched to assist a sailing yacht, which had suffered engine difficulties and was struggling against the tidal conditions to the South of Porthcawl. The yacht was taken under tow and brought back to Porthcawl Marina to allow the skipper to undertake repairs. Sam, 25, is the station’s youngest helm, following in his father’s footsteps, who was a senior helm at Porthcawl. Just 20 hours prior to being paged Sam was out undertaking a helm assessment, being tested in his ability to command the lifeboat in a range of different simulated scenarios. Sam said, ‘I grew up around the lifeboat station and couldn’t wait for the time I was old enough to join the crew, I was obsessed with lifeboats as a child. We used to visit Ilfracombe regularly when I was younger and if I heard the maroons set off to call the crew to launch the lifeboat I couldn’t contain my excitement! My dad even built me my own lifeboat station at home to play in.’ Sam, who works commercially as a relief coxswain on a pilot boat regards his background with the RNLI as being the footing, which got him his first job as a deckhand. MAKE A WILL AND PROTECT YOUR ‘DIAMONDS AND PEARLS’!

New research reveals that more than half of us have not made a will, following in the footsteps of the late music legend Aretha Franklin. The study carried out by Will Aid, the Charity will writing campaign, found that 55% of us in Wales have not made a will; that’s 4% up on last year. The research concluded that the most common reason for why people haven’t made a will is that they ‘didn’t get round to it’ (42%) but also many of us find the topic of death too squeamish with 23% not wanting to discuss what will happen when we die. However, making a will doesn’t have to be difficult. Aretha Franklin is not the only celebrity to die without a will, Prince being another famous celebrity to die intestate. This is a celebrity trend that should be avoided. Aretha Frankin’s failure to make a will is also striking as one of her four children has special needs and will require financial and medical support for the rest of his life. A will would have ensured that appropriate persons could be appointed to look after the funds and ensure it was spent in the most beneficial way for her son. Samantha Abbott, Chartered Legal Executive in the Wills and Probate department at RLE Law Solicitors and a member of Solicitors for the Elderly, says that the trend is concerning: ‘Making a will is not only about who inherits your estate, it’s about making life easier for your loved ones. I have seen countless families fall out when there is no will and this can so easily be avoided. We take part in will campaigns to raise awareness of the importance and benefits of making a will as we see the fallout when there isn’t one’. RLE Law has worked in partnership with the Will Aid Campaign for several years, raising nearly £14k for the charity. Will Aid takes place in November and RLE Law will waive their fee for drafting a will with clients being invited to make a donation to Will Aid, raising vital funds for its charities ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children and Sightsavers. RLE founding director Emma Hardwidge said ‘In November 2017 we offered a number of appointments on a first come, first served basis, which were all snapped up before the month was halfway through. WillAid is always a great opportunity for charities and legal firms to work together to ensure that as many people as possible put their affairs in order. Legal advice YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q)I am obliged to pay my ex wife spousal maintenance for life following our divorce 10 years ago. She is appalling with money, has run up debt and is now threatening to take me back to Court to increase my payments. Surely this can’t be right? A)On the 18th July of this year, the Supreme Court in the UK ruled that a businessman Graham Mills should not have to increase the amount of maintenance he paid to his ex wife 16 years following their divorce after she had managed her finances poorly. Following their divorce settlement in 2002, Mrs Mills had received sufficient funds to buy a property mortgage free but had traded up to live in a more upmarket properties leaving her with a mortgage and no remaining capital. As a result of unwise decisions, she had ended up living in rented accommodation and had applied to the Courts for maintenance to be increased. Mr Mills Chairman of a company Technics Group had been ordered by the Court of Appeal last year to increase monthly maintenance payments to his former spouse Maria from £1,100 per month to £1,441.00 per month for life because she was “unable to support her basic needs”.

The Supreme Court however overturned that decision and concluded that Mrs Mills’ decisions had left her without capital and had increased the costs of her basic needs. Many have seen this decision as a victory against “the meal ticket for life” of indefinite maintenance orders. The case fitted with the growing trend for Courts to assume that a spouse who may earn less and has fewer assets can return to work and be financially independent following a divorce. CHANGES TO THE DIVORCE LAW IN ENGLAND AND WALES A consultation on introducing “no-fault divorces”, which could streamline the slow and confrontational procedures couples face when separating, is being prepared by the government. The justice secretary has previously acknowledged that the argument for reform is “strong”, and is expected to launch a public debate on proposals to modernise legislation that has not been changed for almost 50 years. Under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 in England and Wales, anyone seeking a divorce must either prove their partner is at fault through adultery, desertion or unreasonable behaviour, or alternatively, if both sides agree, they can part after two years of separation. In the absence of consent or evidence of fault, applicants must wait until they have been living apart for five years. Demands for change have mounted after the Supreme Court ruled in July this year that a 68-year-old lady could not divorce her husband and escape her loveless marriage until a period of five years had elapsed. She and her husband had been living separate lives since 2015. It is understood that a consultation will be published in the coming months. There has been growing pressure from campaign groups and divorce lawyers who want the system to be modernised. They argue that the current adversarial system forces couples to blame one another if they wish to speed up divorce. This often has a negative impact on settling finances or making arrangements for the children. Making couples attribute fault in order to end their marriage can escalate the differences between them in an already charged situation. Solicitors find that clients are often unable to understand why they must apportion blame and make their separation more acrimonious. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WILL?

If you die without having made a will, your assets are automatically distributed according to the rules of intestacy. The distribution depends on whether you are married (or in a registered civil partnership) and whether you have any children. This may well have undesired consequences. Having a will ensures your estate is distributed according to your instructions and wishes. You should firstly consider who your executors will be. These are the people you trust to administer your estate according to your will. When making a Will it would be helpful for your executors if you keep a clear written summary of your assets (and debts). You should consider who the Beneficiaries of your estate will be. Your spouse or partner is typically the first beneficiary you will want to provide for. Other beneficiaries may include relatives, friends, charities and other organisations you would like to make gifts to. Your will can name classes of beneficiary (eg all your grandchildren – including those who may be unborn at the time of writing the will). The will should also take into account what will happen if a beneficiary predeceases you: for example, whether you would want a deceased child’s share of your estate to pass instead to his or her family. The will should make it clear what is to be given to each beneficiary. Gifts can be put in trust rather than made outright. For example, you might use a trust to control assets that are being passed to children (or young adults) or to individuals who are incapable of looking after their own financial affairs. Wills commonly include an indication of your wishes for your funeral, though these are not binding on your executors. You may want to prepare a separate letter of wishes providing guidance for your executors. For example, such guidance might be aimed at helping them understand how you would want different beneficiaries of a trust to be treated. Again, this is not binding on your executors. Finally, it is worth reviewing your will regularly, particularly if there are changes in your family circumstances, your financial position or in the law relating to wills and inheritance tax. Your will can be amended as necessary with an appropriate ‘codicil’, or a new will drawn up and the existing will revoked.

Women’s institutions NEWTON WI On September 5th our President Jennifer Davies welcomed everyone back after the summer break. Following the official half of the meeting, we held our celebration of Harvest Time with a delicious supper of fish and chips. The evening concluded with home entertainment by a few of our members, which was hilarious and Betty’s Poem very impressive. Everyone enjoyed. The Summer Fayre, which took place at Trinity on July 27th, was very successful, thanks to all who helped and attended, especially our very own Bell Ringer Gill George. On August 22nd the annual Summer Outing took us to Gloucester. Many members enjoyed their time touring the amazing Cathedral, with its wonderful stained-glass windows, its history and special atmosphere it creates. After a lovely relaxing lunch we were ready to hit the shops for some retail therapy, which we found in the Keys area. The weather was perfect; we all arrived home happy but tired. LALESTON WI Our WI met on 6th September and 25 members were present. I t had been decided that we would have a New Years Lunch rather than a Christmas one and all members were happy with this arrangement, we would also be having a visit to the pantomime in Cardiff on January 10th. Our December meeting was to go back to the old format with a Church Service followed by a buffet in The Blandy Hall. Various items of interest were pointed out to members in The County Letter organised by GFWI. Mo Morgan the proceeded with our Harvest Auction all items supplied by our members, as normal members were very generous with their bidding and we managed to raise £105 which was added to a previous donation of £50 so £155 would be sent to Bridgend Alzheimer’s Society with a request that it would be used locally. I would like to thank all our members for getting into the spirit of things to raise this amount and special thanks to Mo for taking the auction with her usual humour. MYNYDD CYNFFIG WI Tuesday the 11th September and we were holding our monthly meeting at the Talbot Centre Kenfig Hill, usual time 2.00pm to 4.30pm. Meeting chaired by Christine minutes read by Katherine, Enid our secretary and Eirwen our treasurer in attendance. Enid read out our WI correspondent and business. Our August trip to St. Fagans and the Mansion House in Cardiff was declared a great success. Talk of Christmas and our Christmas party and Enid’s now famous ‘pass the parcel’ was organised and put to bed. Our speaker was Malcolm Cowper whose talk on Glamorgan’s Greatest Generation was of great interest as several of our members knew of people in the book and was delighted to hear the stories written about their time during the 2nd world war. The speaker for October is Rosemary Scaddon her topic Top to Toe a history of clothes should be interesting. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMENS GUILD NEWS As I write this in early September we are looking forward to our Harvest celebration and tea! Which reminds me of our afternoon tea in August. In recent years afternoon teas have become popular again and who wouldn’t enjoy that! Fifty of us including guests from Bridgend Guild and Cardiff sat down to a splendid tea and good chat. Flowers have been given to Beverley Perrott for her special birthday. The committee has been busy arranging the year ahead. We shall again be holding an Autumn Fayre on November 30th at Trinity Church Hall this time in aid of Porthcawl’s First Responders. We had a talk from them earlier in the year and it is a very worthwhile organisation providing rapid response to local medical emergencies before an ambulance can arrive. They are always in need of funds for equipment so do support this. Our meeting this month is on October 10th 2.00 p.m. at All Saints Church Hall when we will be having a craft afternoon organised by Freda Rodger and her craft group. Autumn is here and we have started to put our minds to charity work, collecting and preparing things to be used and sold to make money. We collect milk bottle tops and stamps among other things. The Purple Community Fund charity founded by Jane Walker MBE uses drinks can pull rings, leather belts, ties, etc. that can be used to make lovely handbags jewelry and other novelty items to sell. This helps communities to feed and educate their children and lift them out of abject poverty. Our President is supporting two local charities this year - The Stroke Club in Porthcawl and Glanrhyd Mental Health Clinic. These are both very worthy local charities needing our support. We are starting to finalise our dates for autumn events and have had invitations to the events of other clubs in district 15. An interclub meeting in Cardiff is the first, with a speaker for our entertainment. Then we have been invited to an International Rally, which always includes a meal, at the end of October. Our evening talks for members, held on the second Monday of the month, is getting off to a great start with an interesting talk on “The Beauty of Wales” scheduled. Our club members have very innovative ideas to raise funds. Earlier this year we had a Club curry night, which was a delicious success, and, more recently, some members of the Ladies Section put together a fabulous afternoon tea. So we need to undertake some hard work on our plots in order to burn off the calories! This month the key tasks are to begin to put everything ‘to bed’ ready for the autumn and winter. Annual bedding can be removed as it becomes tired (or ‘spent’ to use the gardening phrase) however don’t do this task by the calendar. If your bedding is still looking colourful leave it for a little longer until the first frosts finishes it off. This is the time of year to think about planting bulbs for a colourful display next spring. Bulbs such as Crocus and Narcissi can be planted now but leave Tulips another month. The end of summer is not the end of the world – here’s to October (A.A. Milne, and he’s right you know). October is a glorious month, apart from the odd frost of course. Its bulb planting time, the earlier you plant them the better, whilst the soil is still warm, getting the roots established before the weather closes in will help them fight wet and rot, that said, tulips are happy to go in as late as the end of November, so if you are dithering about what sort to get you’ve got plenty of time! Spring bulbs look fab growing in the lawn, lift a piece of turf pop the bulbs underneath and replace the turf, a real teat in the spring. If you are having trouble ripening off the last tomatoes try putting them in a bag with a banana and they will turn red nicely! The lawn requires less cutting now (yippee!) but rake up any fallen leaves to stop it going brown (they make a great leaf mould) Nature hates a vacuum and will always fill an empty space, so get in first with a plant before nature does it with a weed! MEDITATION GATHERING The time is now for me to invite interested people to form a meditation gathering. A group that will meet on the auspicious day of the full moon every month. I’ve been here before with the very successful Bridgend Meditation Community and our hosting at St Clare’s Prayer Centre. I have no interest in beginner or experienced labels or what you currently believe in. The practice will be guided by the formulaic teachings of the Pali Cannon. Teachings that have helped millions of people for over 2600 years. There will be no new age interpretation and ignoring of the fundamental practices (no watering down like Mindfulness) neither will there be an unrealistic structure and pay for session pricing. Given completely freely, all materials will be given without any expectation or reward. The Monks of Amaravati Monastery will support us where audio teachings are provided. Meetings may not always be indoors but involve travel to our temple, outside in the woodland or in a scenic peaceful location. PORTHCAWL COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS SAY “THANK YOU” TO PORTHCAWL TOWN COUNCIL

Porthcawl Community First Responders (CFR’s) are a small but growing team who volunteer with the Welsh Ambulance Service covering Porthcawl and it’s surrounding area. We are allocated to 999 emergency calls by Ambulance Control, including life threatening situations such as suspected stroke cases, choking, significant bleeding, heart attacks, cardiac arrests and breathing difficulties, providing initial emergency care to people until a Paramedic or Ambulance can arrive on the scene. Whilst we are trained by the Ambulance Service to carry out emergency first aid, administer oxygen therapy, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use a defibrillator we are a ‘self-funding group’. This means we have to source funding for the purchase of a number of essential items including uniform, kit bags and Defibrillators. Earlier in the summer we were fortunate to receive a Grant from Porthcawl Town Council that has enabled us to buy a defibrillator that is already being used by the team when on call responding to emergency 999 calls, along with a training defibrillator and CPR training doll - these will be used to maintain the teams skills and also allow us to start training members of the public within the Porthcawl Community in Basic Life Support, including CPR and how to use a defibrillator. The equipment was formally handed over by the Porthcawl Town Council Mayor, Councillor Norah Clarke.

As we said a final farewell to our outgoing Musical Director, Phil Juliff and accompanist Beryl Evans at our Annual Concert in July, the Choir returned in September to a new exciting era under the musical direction of their new MD Joshua Xerri. We look forward to the regular concerts that take place in the Autumn, Christmas, St. David’s day, 2 tours away in 2019 and the next Annual concert in the Grand Pavilion in the summer as well as some interesting and exciting new ventures such as: hosting a Male Voice Choir from Ireland; Performing a joint concert with the Royal Marines Band and an extra concert at the Grand Pavilion for the National Coast Watch. MID GLAMORGAN MIXED CHOIR The Choir has had some exciting news. In preparation for their 40th anniversary celebrations next year, the choir has been successful in obtaining a community Lottery grant through Ty Cerdd. The grant, supported by The Arts Council for Wales and the Welsh Government will help support the choir’s ‘Make us Forty,’ project. The focus of the project is to raise the numbers to the 40 mark or more. It aims to get to a wide section of the community hopefully enthusing people to join. To achieve this, the choir will go out to a number of locations to meet the public. At these monthly events/venues members of the choir will talk to members of the public about the choir and the work they undertake. Over the past few months the Choir has been fortunate to secure the services of several Patrons, Councillor John McCarthy and his wife Judy, Councillor Richard Williams and his wife Julie, Mr Huw Iranca Davies AM and Mr Chris Elmore MP. AROUND PORTHCAWL By local artist Joe Rhodes

Since winning the Art Challenge Wales award in 2016, professional artist Joe Rhodes from Porthcawl has been amassing a body of work that captures the peculiarity of light to be found at various sites around the old seaside town. An exhibition in the Pavilion Theatre which ran until 9th September, was well attended and many of the works sold. All the paintings, can be viewed on Joe’s website at joerhodes.uk and on his Facebook Joe Rhodes Art. Joe’s work is in collectors’ homes around Britain and he has won awards and plaudits over the years including twice selling as a finalist in the Daily Mail ‘Not the Turner Prize’ at the Mall Galleries in London and exhibiting in shared shows around the UK. Locally he has exhibited and won awards at Y Galeri Caerphilly and Rhondda Heritage Park annual exhibition and South Wales Art Society, winning the Derick Turner Award in 2017. He has also had solo shows at Nolton Gallery Bridgend, and Silures gallery Porthcawl. A double page article outlining his working was published in the magazine Artists and Illustrators in 2007. Working from sketches ad photos taken on site, Joe usually produces finished pieces in his studio overlooking the panoramic vista of the Bristol Channel.

A FILM MAKER’S POINT OF VIEW

PORTHCAWL MALE CHOIR

The zoom lens is one of those optical devices that all photographers now take for granted. Even relatively inexpensive cameras provide a zoom facility. In the world of film and television, they came into widespread use in the 1960s, and the zoom effect quickly became a visual gimmick, so much so that it was rather tiresome in the end. Its chief use should be for critical focusing and framing rather than to provide the effect of closing in, or drawing back from, the subject. However, its most ingenious use was, in my opinion, providing the “dolly zoom” effect, reputedly thought up by second-unit cameraman Irmin Roberts for Alfred Hitchcock’s film Vertigo. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know the shot I mean: it’s when James Stewart is ascending the wooden staircase in the old mission building and looks down. There’s a weird change of perspective to represent his feeling of disorientation, created by physically moving the camera nearer whilst zooming back, or vice versa. The zoom lens is actually almost as old as the cinema itself, but was rarely used in the early days, being big and cumbersome, and optically less simple than a prime lens. The choir completed their summer programme with a very successful Annual Concert in the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl. The concert featured The 4 Tunes, four young singers who have had wide success in musical theatre. They entertained the very appreciative audience with a wide range of close harmony and solo musical items that complemented the Choirs programme superbly. The choir was also pleased to welcome on stage the recipient of this year’s Dillwyn Evans Award given to a pupil from Porthcawl going on to study music at university. This year it was Lucy Vinen, who is going to Warwick University to study Music and Drama, we wish her well for the future and hope she will return to sing with the choir once again. The choir is very appreciative of the efforts of Musical Director Mair Jones, Richard Davies, accompanist, Beryl Cullen, assistant accompanist and Marilyn Hill, Treasurer, in making the Concert such a success. With a fresh start for the coming year, it is an ideal time for prospective new choristers, who can join in the learning of new items, where we are all in the same boat! STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK Viv Jones Tribute This month’s column is dedicated to the memory of veteran Porthcawl-based drummer Viv Jones who peacefully passed away last month. Viv started his musical journey playing in showbands, clubs and on cruise ships. I first met him in the 70s when I was a glass collector in the Pondarosa Club, North Cornelly and he played in the resident band. We became friends later when he and his best mate, pianist Graham Thomas took over The Farmers Arms in Nottage when it affectionately became known as The Piano Bar in the 90s. Viv could play any style of music, but I think jazz was his favourite and I believe American legend Buddy Rich was his idol. To see him behind a kit was pure poetry in motion, and he was still performing up until the last few years. I know he was a huge inspiration to all us local musos, especially the drummers, who all admired his musical prowess. He was a modest but larger than life character and will be sadly missed by his family and hundreds of friends. But one thing is for sure – he will not be forgotten. There were 3 awards to be announced. The Photographer of the Year for Prints was won by Richard Craze. The Photographer of the Year for Digital Images was won by Geoff Baker. Richard Craze for the second year running won the Overall Photographer of the year and recipient of the Trevor Owen Trophy. What’s on ELVIS - THE ART EXHIBITION, PENCOED The Pencoed and District Art Group will be exhibiting their tribute to Elvis at the Little Pen-y-Bont Micro Pub, Pencoed from Saturday 22nd September to late November. The group has been successfully exhibiting at the micro pub for the last 18 months this has become a very interesting talking point and has become known as ‘enjoying a pint and a picture’. The idea of a themed exhibition was much discussed by the members and finally Elvis emerged as the favourite. The Porthcawl Elvis weekend probably helped the decision and with enthusiastic Elvis fans amongst the pub regulars, the exhibition should prove to be a success with the pictures showing the various talents from beginners upwards using different techniques, styles and the full range of art mediums on display. Portraits, caricatures, song titles even an Elvis landscape will be on show and hopefully should cause admiration, discussion and even constructive criticism but enjoyment is our main aim. The club recently celebrated ‘Taxi’ Mike Davies’ magic milestone 250th parkrun. It’s a stunning achievement for 60-year-old Mike, who ran his very first parkrun back in June 2013 and, since then, was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent chemotherapy. Even more staggeringly, all of his parkruns have been run consecutively and all of them at Porthcawl. Other milestones in the club were achieved by Carl Field and Martin Gush who both brought up their 50th parkrun respectively. In other news Deb Roberts – the club’s reigning female champion – has successfully come through the Coach in Running Fitness programme run by Welsh Athletics, while she also won her age category (W45) in the Run 4 Wales 10k series. The club treasure hunt was a massive hit with members – who were also out in force with plenty of PBs at the Swansea, Cardiff and rearranged St David’s Day 10K events ahead of this month’s Cardiff half. Meanwhile the Ladies’ cross-country team is now competing in Division One of the West Glamorgan League after receiving the welcome news they had been promoted. And coach Wilfy Edwards now well into their nine-week programme, leads the latest batch of Couch to 5k recruits. Carl Field

SOUTHERNDOWN & OGMORE BY SEA SURF REPORT Mid September and we are all poised for Hurricane Helene and what surf conditions she will bring. Big, but what will the winds be like and how will it affect the surf. Onshore and rubbish probably. After the great heat wave of 2 months and practically no surf at all, we have had a few very small days at only 1ft as well as a couple of 2ft windy days. All in all it has been a great summer for weather but a poor surf summer. After more dredging out off Porthcawl and Ogmores River mouth, a lot of sand has gone now from the River mouth and the Banks have been ruined. Q? Why don’t they get the sand from the Sahara and leave our surf and Tourist beaches alone and free of Damage. EVERYBODY SAYS SO, so why do the authorities keep granting dredging licences in this area. Answer, because hrwallingford.com keep saying its ok to do so. Haven’t they noticed the accelerated rate at which our cliffs are crumbling into the sea with rock falls like you have never seen before? The pebble banks having to be rebuilt by hand. PORTHCAWL LIFEGUARD CLUB NEWS Unfortunately due to adverse weather and sea conditions a decision was made to cancel the Round the Bay Swim in August. This was to ensure the safety of competitors and those providing safety cover in the water. It has not been possible to rearrange the swim yet so it is likely that the next swim will take place next June or July. Great Britain Lifesaving recently announced the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) Team to represent GB at the Lifesaving World Championships in Australia in November. This is the first time an IRB event will take place at a World Championships and Porthcawl Lifeguard Club are delighted that 4 of the 8 GB Team Members are from our club. Picked from PLGC to represent GB Men are Tom Parry, Marcus Fish and James Evenden; and picked from PLGC to represent GB Women is Sarah Davidson. Big congratulations to them and good luck in Adelaide in November. PLGC sea training on Tuesdays and Sundays is due to stop in September, but pool training will continue at Pyle Pool from 8.00pm-9.00pm on Friday nights.
