Letters Re: Appalled At The Damage Letter (Aug 2014 issue) Dear Editor, I refer to Mr G Wilkins’ comments with regard to the common fire at Rest Bay in June. Firstly may I kindly remind folk that it is imperative that suitable fire breaks are initiated in order to prevent an escalation of damage in the future, primarily the bird/ animal population. I speak from experience having served in what was then the largest forestry/grassland in the UK namely the Glamorgan Fire Service. It is common knowledge that grass and dunes will, through nature recover. The criticism aimed at our dedicated team of firefighters is totally unjust; perhaps one should be looking towards the proposed closure of our fire station and not aiming such criticism towards personnel that one day you may require. Mr R Williams, Porthcawl

Hunters Lodge Charity Quiz – Thank You Deadline date for the October Issue is: Monday 15th September

Porthcawl Regeneration Fiasco Dear Editor, The Welsh office has recently given the green light for a 6 million plan to modernise Bridgend town center. Since 1974 Bridgend has received in the region of 50 million pounds for the regeneration of the town and in the last 10 years has received a further 15 million which makes one very pleased for the people of Bridgend. The reason I mentioned these figures was to emphasise and highlight the complete contrast of BCBC’S attitude to the regeneration of Porthcawl where progress has been nil. Their reason is echoed by their false signature tune which has always been there is no money available. Of course this only applies to Porthcawl which shows how Porthcawl has been victimised over the years by BCBC’S biased principles. BCBC stated that the only way to kick start regeneration in Porthcawl was to sell land at Hillsboro car park to one of the supermarkets. Tesco eventually made a offer of 6.5 million for the land whereupon BCBC immediately held a meeting in secret and at their brilliant best decided to give the staggering sum of 4.7 million to a third party and to retain 1.8 million. I presume they were going to use the money for the weeding of Salt lake car park. Luckily the deal with Tesco fell through. BCBC’S regeneration plans for Salt Lake, which is in a prime spot, is to bury it under hundreds of houses and blocks of flats which they claim would enhance the town and turn it into a premier seaside resort. Because of their biased principles they are against any benefits to Porthcawl such as turning Salt Lake into a pleasure park with a swimming pool, sports center and landscaped with special water features etc. Also a bus station on the corner of Portway Surgery to prevent buses entering town. The only way we are going to get the regeneration plans that Porthcawl needs is for all local organastions to combine and campaign as one body and it is equally essential to seek the assistance of well known people of Porthcawl regularly seen on our TV screens which would give tremendous weight to the campaign to rectify the injustices imposed on Porthcawl and to take the battle into the council offices in Bridgend. It is a case of stand up, stand up Porthcawl before its too late. John Jenkins, Porthcawl Seaside News | 8

Dear Editor, I would like to say a big thank you to past regulars of the Hunters Lodge, Brackla Wednesday night charity quiz who over the years have raised many thousands of pounds for local charities and good causes. I would also like to express my grateful thanks to the management and staff of the Hunters Lodge who over the past 20 years have generously provided prizes and hospitality for the quiz regulars. In the time since I was hosting the quiz from May 2012 we have raised £3,709 with all proceeds of the quiz going to the following local organisations: Healing The Wounds, South Wales Air Ambulance, Bridgend Women’s Aid, St. John’s Ambulance, and most recently, Bridgend Young Carers. Mike Marshall, Brackla

Jelly Fish Dear Editor, Thought this might be of interest - maybe you have a similar picture already. I saw this barrel jelly fish washed up on Sker beach recently. That’s a size 10 sandal next to it. Poor thing. J Whitham, Kenfig

Rubbish On The Beach Dear Editor, The first week of the school summer holidays had been glorious weather and we visited Trecco Bay about 5.30pm on two consecutive evenings for a swim. The tide was in, the children were playing, the sun was shining, the water warm – it was a truly golden summer’s evening. Along the high tide line gently washing in the waves were rows of drink containers, snack food wrappers and the debris from a day at the seaside. Further up the beach waiting for a higher tide or a storm to wash them away were dirty nappies, drink cans, half a dozen corn cobs left from a barbecue, and other debris - all less than two minutes walk from a plentiful supply of litter bins. How can people be so dirty and how do you feel when you take guests for a visit to our beaches? L. Boyle, Pembroke Deadline date is always the 15th of the month

Letters Thank You From Porthcawl Stroke Club Dear Editor, We would just like to say a huge thank you to the local community and visitors to Porthcawl for supporting the Porthcawl Stroke Club. The Porthcawl Stroke Club’s annual collection never ceases to surprise! It is just wonderful to chat to local people and visitors to Porthcawl; who give freely donations towards running this important facility. The Stroke Club is a self help group, supported by devoted volunteers who never gain no financial reward: Mr Ray Cross (secretary); Mr Keith Duggan, (chairman); Miss Miriam Barker (committee member). We would like them all to know it is with great gratitude we appreciate this support. The lives of hundreds of stroke survivors are enriched, friendships are made and best of all there is a life to enjoy. Our gratitude also goes to many volunteers and supporters of the club. A speedy recovery is wished for members who are unable at present to attend the club through ill health, they are: Esther Beresford, John Phillips, Maisie Manley, Victoria and Derrick Critchley, Ken York, Sylvia and Bill Newman, Gwyn Rogers, Gwyn Llewlyn and Ray Stead. Thinking of you all. Anyone wishing to join our happy group, needs to contact Mr Keith Duggan (01656)773376 or Ray Cross (01656) 782190. Barbara Matthews, Porthcawl

Diamond Wedding Celebration Dear Editor, John and Margaret Jenkins celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on 13th August. They met when they worked together in the Avon factory in Bridgend and were married at St Brides Church in 1954. They have lived in Porthcawl for most of their married life. They have three daughters, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. John has regularly contributed to the Seaside News, making several suggestions for the Porthcawl regeneration. Long may it continue! Helen Hawes, Mawdlam

Re: Madeleine Moon MP Article ‘Moving Out Of The Shadows’ (Feb 2014 issue) Dear Editor, I am a carer for a lovely 84 year old husband with vascular dementia for 6 years and feel I want to share a heartfelt poem I was given. It may give people an insight into the problems these sad people face. It’s good that ‘Joe Public’ are now being made aware of the condition - it is nothing to be ashamed about. Alzheimer’s Request Do not ask me to remember Don’t try to make me understand Let me rest and know you’re with me Kiss my cheek and hold my hand I’m confused beyond your concept I’m sad and sick and lost All I know is that i need you To be with me at all cost Do not loose your patience with me Do not scold or curse or cry I can’t help the way i’m acting I can’t be different even though I try Just remember that I need you That the best of me is gone Please don’t fail to stand beside me Love me til my life is gone Joy Chamberlain, Brackla

Cynffig Comprehensive A Level Success Hello again. It seems strange to be writing this September column during our summer holiday, but of course schools never REALLY stop! As I write this, I have just spent a lovely day with our departing Year 13 pupils, celebrating their A-level successes, and sharing their excitement at the prospect of university. And what successes they have had! A* grades in subjects from law to animal management, and first-choice acceptances for virtually all, from Medicine at Newcastle, to Aerospace Engineering at Swansea. We are sending off to the next stage of their lives the lawyers, fashion designers, architects and film directors of tomorrow, to name just a sample of the spectrum of our pupils’ talents. So impressed are universities by their ability that unconditional offers have become commonplace, and rewardbursaries for outstanding achievement awarded by departments delighted to have secured our pupils on their courses. On 11th September at 6pm, we will be holding our annual Presentation Evening, to recognise and celebrate these achievements, and those of pupils from ALL years across the school. It is one of the most uplifting events of the year, and fills me with great pride. Here’s to another great year. Hannah Castle, Head teacher

WELCOME TO THE OLD SCHOOL HOUSE NURSERY The Old School House Nursery, is a “home from home”, a place where children will feel safe and secure, where they are looked after by staff who are not only well qualified, but who genuinely care for their young charges. Finally and of equal importance, our nursery is the ideal environment for early learning development, a place where children learn in an atmosphere of fun, sewing the seeds for their future educational development. We believe that close links with parents are essential, as children feel more comfortable and secure being left with ‘friends’ rather than strangers. This Philosophy of partnership with parents is the foundation that underpins all of the activities and information provided on this website.

SCHOOLS Record A-Level Results for Bryntirion Comprehensive

Students at Bryntirion Comprehensive are today enjoying a record set of A-level results, which represent the highest ever achieved by the school. The highest achieving A -level students in the year group are: Holly Bennett, Henry Bowen, Samantha Hindi, Bethan Jones, Maria Love, Nicole Martensson, Ashleigh Richards, Andrew Wilcox, and Melanie Williams. Each of the students listed above have achieved at least 3As in their A-level exam studies. In particular, Melanie Williams has gained a place at Cardiff University to study Medicine whilst Andrew Wilcox has gained a place including a prestigious scholarship to study Physics at Kings College London. 44% of the examinations sat by the students achieved an A* or A grade, whilst 81% of entries achieved A* – C grade. The overall A-level pass rate for the year group is an outstanding 100%, a truly exceptional figure. “It is pleasing to report outstanding results from all students. This performance reflects a strong commitment by students, parents and teachers to achieve academic results of the highest standard. As a school we wish to congratulate everyone and wish each student good luck and success for the future,” said Nick Brain, Head Teacher

Brynteg A-Level Results We are delighted with this year’s results, which reflect the hard work of students and staff at Brynteg. Our percentage of students achieving two or more A-levels or equivalent has improved significantly from last year, as has our A*-C achievement. In particular, our A*/A achievement has increased by 10% on last year and we congratulate 20 students who achieved A* or A grades in all of their subjects, which is outstanding. Continuing with the tradition of excellence at Brynteg, the vast majority of our students are now looking forward to attend their first choice of university, including three candidates successful at Oxford and Cambridge. We wish all of our students every success for the future! Nik Dart School Assessment & Data Manager

St. Clare’s School News There were plenty of reasons to celebrate at St. Clare’s School over the summer holidays, as pupils and staff enjoyed a well-deserved break before the autumn term. Pupils, parents and staff from across St. Clare’s School now have yet more reasons to boast about our fantastic school. Staff in the Nursery were delighted to learn that they had been awarded an ‘Excellent’ in the Estyn Inspection which took place at the end of the summer term. This is the highest grading that Estyn awards and reflects the dedication and care given by our professional Nursery team to each individual pupil. We are all exceptionally proud of the Nursery staff and pupils for making this happen. A-level results day is always a nerve-wracking time for pupils who have had to wait months to find out their final grades. There were happy faces all round at St. Clare’s on 14th August as it was announced that this year’s exam results were the best in nine years. Our Year 13 students achieved 41% A* and A grades, compared with the national score of 23%, which was wonderful news for all pupils and staff who have worked tremendously hard all year to secure such impressive results. SCHOOLS Record Year At Porthcawl Comprehensive New Service For Young People At Griffin Park “Perseverance Creates Success”, never has our school motto been so apt in summarising the AS and A2 results for 2014. Determination, application and sheer dedication were the personal qualities on display in abundance. Students at AS and A2 have had their endeavour rewarded with excellent results. There is a large debt of gratitude for teachers who have worked so hard once again this year and for parents who have supported their sons and daughters. Excellent results truly reflect the effective partnership between a school, its learners and the support from home. The current year 13 pass rate at A* to E was an incredible 100% while the A2 A* to C pass rate was an impressive 85.41%. Almost 35%of the whole entry percentage was at the A*/A grade. This is especially astonishing given the fact that 316 A level papers were sat. A very impressive 17 students achieved 3A grades or better at A2 level, with some achieving four ‘A’ levels. The AS results were equally as impressive - 85% of the entry was A* to E and 60% achieved the A* to C grade. At AS a very impressive 19% of the entry achieved the A Grade. Headteacher Mr Slade commented that this excellent series of results will ensure Porthcawl students have secured places at some of the best universities in the country. Mr Slade continued to congratulate staff and students who were praised for their hard work and steadfast dedication. Mr Slade concluded that the results were especially impressive given the large size of the entry; over 316 papers were sat at A level. There were several notable performances from the departments of English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Welsh, French, Welsh Baccalaureate, BTEC Performing Arts, Drama, Electronics, Sociology and Textiles at A2 where 85% or better pass rates were recorded. A special mention must go to Anna Bonet and Madeleine Williamson- Sarll who got 3A* and 1A. Students who performed particularly well include: Thomas Allen - 2A* + 1A Rachel Battrick - 1A* + 1A + 1B + 1C Rhiannon Bevan - 1A* + 2A Anna Bonet - 3A* + 1A Tom Hunt - 2A* + 1A Sarah Kavanagh - 3A Jessica Kilpatrick - 3D* (BTEC) C in AS Rachel Lewis - 1A* + 2A Ellie Morris - 3D* (BTEC) Isabella Pill-Williams - 3A + 1B Yuri Roberts - 3A + 1A in AS Shannon Rock - 1A* + 2A Jenny Sham - 2A* + 2A Madeleine Williamson-Sarll - 3A* + 1A Katelyn Weaver - 1D* + 2D (BTEC) Lucy Webb - 1A* + 1A + 1B + Welsh Bacc Victoria Davies - 2A + 1B + Welsh Bacc

As another summer ends and children head back to school for a new academic year, I hope that they will have been inspired to become more active by events such as the recent Commonwealth Games. Our schools are offering their widest ever variety of different sports and activities for boys and girls. During the build-up to the Commonwealth Games, we also organised a special event that enabled more than 500 local secondary school girls to try new activities such as Zumba, body attack, street rugby, street hockey, fitness workshops and more. We support our children and young people in many different ways, of course, so I was particularly pleased when we recently opened the Griffin Park Health and Wellbeing Centre. Run by Bridgend Youth Service and featuring activities such as a weekly Saturday morning breakfast club, the centre is designed to help young people aged 11–25 deal with important issues such as bullying, substance misuse, and sexual and physical health. With a special emphasis on early intervention, the centre’s staff are on hand to offer young people expert help and appropriate advice as they grow into adulthood. Comprehensive School OPEN EVENING FOR YEAR 7 INTAKE IN 2015

To be held at 6.00pm Thursday 2nd October 2014 The school is proud to hold its Annual Open Evening for those parents who wish their children to attend Year 7 in September 2015. Porthcawl is a traditional school with a proven track record of excellence for all. Examination results have been consistently above the local and national averages. In 2013 • 100% students sitting GCSEs in Year 11 gained a qualification A*- G • 78.9% of pupils passed 5 or more GCSEs at A*- C • 30 students gained 8 or more GCSEs at A/A* (26 in 2012) We organise frequent transition events to help pupils settle in; here are some of their thoughts: “Transition has made me feel more confident!” “The size of the Comp. has become smaller and is not so big and scary any more!” “I’ve already met new friends from other primaries” Further information can be found on the school website: www.porthcawlschool.co.uk Alternatively you may telephone 01656 774100. www.seasidenews.co.uk

Our recent Estyn inspection report was very positive and we were proud to read that: “One of the school’s strengths is the exceptional working relationship between teachers and pupils. The school has a strong ethos based on fairness and this creates a caring and disciplined environment.” “Transition work with partner primary schools is of the highest quality.” “At Key Stage 3, performance in English, Mathematics and Science has improved and overall performance is higher than modelled expectations.” “Nearly all pupils behave very well in class and around the school. They are ready to learn and participate well in lessons. They are courteous and relate well to one another, to their teachers and to other adults.” Seaside News | 17

News Move The Mud

Porthcawl Town Council News

It appears that tempers have finally snapped, with campaign group Porthcawl First planning a protest on August Bank Holiday Monday over a pile of dredged harbour silt that has been left on the sea front. The group says the ‘Move The Mud’ event is aimed at pushing Bridgend County Borough Council to dispose of the waste, claiming it poses a health risk, as it contains chemicals including lead and benzene. The council disputes this and says its removal is currently the subject of a legal dispute. Leader Mel Nott claims the protest will adversely impact Porthcawl during one of its busiest tourist weekends. It seems like strange reasoning from the council. South Wales has enjoyed a record July for hot weather and during that time this pile has remained on view as visitors to the town will have passed it by and – no doubt – wondered why it has been allowed to remain in such a prominent position. This in turn underlines the argument I frequently hear from people in the town – and from Porthcawl First – that the area is not high up on the council’s list of priorities. Whether it is or isn’t, quickly removing this eyesore will go some way to addressing local concerns.

The Porthcawl Saturday Club is returning for another term with a brand new name ‘Seaside Stars!’ Sessions will on Saturday morning 10.30am – 12.30pm and will be open to 8-11year olds. The cost is £1/child for a one hour session. It is a great opportunity to encourage the further development of a child’s numeracy and literacy skills through a variety of fun and creative tasks. For further information please email ptc.saturdayclub@ gmail.com or telephone 01656 782215. The first session is scheduled for 27th September. The Town Council has a number of energy saving light bulbs available to give away to residents of Porthcawl. If you wish to have one please call into the Town Council Office, 24 Victoria Avenue, Porthcawl during office hours (9.00am – 1.30pm) – first come first served! Do you have something you would like the Town Council to discuss, or would like to attend a Full Council meeting but have difficulty travelling to the Town Council Chamber? If so, please pop something into a letter for the Town Council and ask for a meeting to be held in your ward. This request will then be considered by the Town Council. Alison Thomas Town Clerk

Travelling Abroad How often when planning your summer holiday do you think of making a quick note of your MP’s email and telephone number? Never? Well this year MPs have been involved in making sure a huge number of constituents can go on holiday by chasing up delays and lost papers in the passport office. More passports have arrived at the last moment with bags packed by the front door than I ever thought possible. Into my inbox has also come a letter from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office asking MPs to pass on simple precautions to constituents. The letter starts with the usual advice about researching the country to be visited, health risks, behaving responsibly and respecting local cultures. Taking out comprehensive travel insurance is essential for everyone. The costs of a health crisis and repatriation can be greater than buying a house. Sadly there is also information about support for anyone concerned that they or someone they know may be forced into a marriage via the specialist Forced Marriage Unit. There is also some help available from the FCO if someone goes missing abroad. So take out that insurance, do some background reading and make a note of 01656 750002 and moonm@parliament.uk Finally, congratulations on the 16th birthday edition of the Seaside News. The magazine has become an essential resource for news and services locally. I always make sure I have a copy in both my London and Bridgend offices. Porthcawl Museum The failure of Bridgend Council and Porthcawl Town Council to agree a way forward on the future of Porthcawl Museum has left the town facing the loss of a major cultural asset. My understanding is that the Town Council were offered the building on condition they vacate their current premises. However, Town Councillors decided that the museum building did not meet their needs and were reluctant to commit themselves to a planned maintenance programme amounting to around £200,000. As a result the County Borough Council are now planning to sell the building to the highest bidder as early as this autumn. Porthcawl Museum is the only county-run museum in the council’s whole area, and is a vital component in explaining Porthcawl’s past history to present and future generations. I have written to the County Borough Council asking them to reconsider but without any success. It is my view that an alternative way forward should be found to keep this building in public ownership and prevent the 5,700 items there being put into storage or sent to other museums. News High Hopes For More Golf Success

Support Your Local High Street

Following the recent success of the Senior Open Golf Championship, support is growing for the Royal Porthcawl to join the prestigious likes of St Andrews as a host for the Open Championship within the next few years. We received excellent feedback from many of the 43,500 people who travelled to the town to enjoy the Senior Open. The players themselves had very good things to say, too, and golfer Tom Watson has already recommended the Royal Porthcawl as a potential venue for the Open to the chief executive of the sport’s governing body. The Royal Porthcawl has rightly earned a reputation as being one of the premier links golf courses in the UK, so staging the Open Championship would be another step towards making Porthcawl synonymous with golf, and would clearly be an immense boost for local tourism and the economy. That’s why Bridgend County Borough Council will be working closely with the Royal Porthcawl and other partners to do all that we can to deliver this for the area. Support from Porthcawl Town Council, local volunteers, residents and businesses during the Senior Open was excellent, and I’d like to thank everyone who helped make it such an outstanding success.

According to the latest figures, the number of people using the shops and services in Porthcawl town centre is on the rise. High streets have been hit hard in recent years but it’s great to hear that 14 per cent more people have visited Porthcawl town centre so far this year than by the same point in 2013. It’s fantastic news, and comes as a new campaign is set to begin which will encourage communities across Wales to use their local high streets more. Led by the Welsh Government, the ‘Support your High Street campaign’ launches this autumn and will be focused around national High Street Week which runs from 20 to 27 September. Many businesses in Porthcawl town centre will also be getting involved with a number of initiatives to help attract more people through their doors, and if the displays that so many traders put on for the recent Senior Open Golf Championship are anything to go by, there’ll be a real buzz around the town. You can find out more at www.wales.gov.uk/highstreet. Local businesses are also looking forward to this month’s Bridgend Business Forum Awards 2014, which will highlight our exceptional businesses and individuals. Good luck to everyone who has been shortlisted.

Gas Safety Week – 15th to 21st September Local Gas Safe registered engineer David Finney is urging residents to be safe not sorry as part of National Gas Safety Week (15-21 September). Only Gas Safe registered engineers can legally work on gas. With 250,000 illegal gas jobs carried out every year by cowboys who do not have the skills or qualifications to do the job safely, David is reminding the public to have gas appliances checked at least annually and ensure the engineer they are using is registered by asking for their Gas Safe ID card. If left unchecked, poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Last year 343 people were injured and 10 people died as a result of gas related incidents. David said: “I regularly go to homes and see unsafe appliances which haven’t been serviced in years or have been worked on by illegal fitters. Householders are often unaware of the danger they are in. So I’m supporting Gas Safety Week by raising awareness of these issues among local residents so they know how to keep safe.” Smell gas or think there might be a leak? Call the free 24 hour national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999. David Finney 07790 336094 www.boilerservicesbridgend.co.uk

Selling Off The Old Police Station News that BCBC wants to sell off the old police station in Porthcawl is hugely disappointing. I had hoped that the town council would have been able to take it over but I understand that the deal on offer was for them to do a swap and give up their offices in Victoria Avenue. But the council feels that the old police station does not meet all their needs especially as there is no room for a council chamber there. I feel very strongly that this building must be retained – not least because it houses the Porthcawl Museum plus their archive of thousands of items. The town’s art society is also based there. A way must be found for it to be retained. I understand BCBC’s need to raise capital by selling off assets but this asset is one that should be handed to the people of Porthcawl. This means that organisations, councillors and individuals must band together to form an organisation which can take it over and then raise the funding needed to carry out all the repairs required. The time for talking is over – action is what is needed now from Porthcawl’s many elected representatives. Byron Davies Welsh Conservative Regional AM for South Wales West

News Wi-Fi At The Seaside…For Free!

Local PCSO News

Bridgend County Borough Council has joined forces with Wi-Fi specialists The Cloud to offer Porthcawl visitors and residents free outdoor internet access at the new marina and along the Esplanade. With thousands of fans expected to visit Porthcawl’s annual Elvis Festival this month, the new service means that enthusiasts can go online to keep up-to-date with the festival’s events while exploring Porthcawl. Councillor David Sage, Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “The recent Senior Open golf championship was a brilliant opportunity to launch the new free seaside Wi-Fi service and showcase what Porthcawl and Bridgend County Borough has to offer. Now Elvis fans will get to sample the great new outdoor service too. “Members of the public recently voted Porthcawl and Rest Bay into the National Trust’s top 20 list of special places in Wales, and I hope that this new service will help even more people explore the local area.” The free Wi-Fi service was developed to boost internet accessibility in Porthcawl following the success of a similar initiative at local libraries. It will allow the public to browse the internet, access social networks, and search for local businesses, services and destinations via smartphones, tablets and other WiFi enabled devices. Hannah Lewis, Marketing and Engagement Assistant BCBC

PCSO Kyle Maiden took part in the Kenfig Hill Festival Week by engaging with the disability group at the Talbot Community Centre. The morning included sit down aerobics, bingo, tombola and cake and drinks stalls, raising money for the local community. PCSO Maiden said: “It’s great to engage with different members of the public and to help raise money for the local community. Events like this are really important to build the bridge with a diverse range of people.” PCSO Kyle Maiden 55667 Mobile 07825 503907

“So,” he said, “you’re a private detective?” I nodded, “Huh-huh.” “You solve mysteries?” I shrugged, “Sometimes.” “Then solve this…a woman and her husband go to the cinema. She murders him, then unseen and undetected, she removes herself and her victim from the scene of the crime. How did she do it?” I thought for a while, then asked, “In what country did this take place?” He replied, “The USA.” “What type of film were they watching?” “A western.” I thought for a while longer then smiled. “That’s easy, what do I get for a reward.” “Name it,” he said. I looked out of my office window at his sparkling new car. “How about the use of your Bentley for a day?” He shrugged, “It’s yours. Now tell me, how did she do it?” “The woman and her husband went to a drive-in movie. During the final showdown, the gunfight, she used the sound of the bullets on the screen to cover her own gunshot. Then she simply drove away. Am I right?” He stood and fished in his pockets for his car keys. Then he walked out of my office, leaving the keys to his Bentley on my desk. The Hi Tide is known everywhere as a Mecca for entertainment but few know it became Porthcawl’s answer to London’s Tate Gallery when U3A convener and monthly speaker Graham Cross gave a skilful and interesting presentation on Victorian art with his wife Jenny operating the PowerPoint pictures. Entitled “The Victorians: Britain through the Paintings of the Age,” his colourful talk described the Victorian era (18371901) through famous artworks of the day. They changed the world with their great inventions and many of us had Victorian grandparents but few of us asked what life was like for live-in servants paid just £10 a year or 5 year old boys who swept the insides of hot chimneys. Graham, a 70’s art student recounted the many stories behind the works of art and their painters such as Queen Victoria’s favourite, William Powell Frith who had 12 children by his wife Isabelle and seven by his former ward and mistress Mary Alford. Some of the 40 paintings shown and discussed were The opening of the Great Exhibition 1852, The World of Wealth and Power 1861, Chimney Sweep 1866, Battle of Balaclava 1876, Tepidarium 1881, Prince of Wales at Cragside 1884 and The Lady of Shalott 1888. September At The Talbot

The Andromeda Galaxy

On Thursday 4th September we start off the autumn programme by paying a visit to the Westons Cider Mill in Ledbury, near Ross on Wye. We will have a guided tour of the mill, cider tasting (loo on the coach), Ploughman’s lunch and an hour in Ross on Wye on the return journey. There are not many seats left, so book early to avoid disappointment. All this for only £25! We just hope the weather will be kind to us to enjoy the day out. Later in the month members of the Talbot, based in Prince Road, Kenfig Hill, are looking forward to our Hawaiian evening on Saturday 20th. Most have already bought their garlands and grass skirts (although not compulsory)! The entertainment for the evening is by the Porthcawl Ukelele Band. At £10 a ticket, including supper, it should be a good evening, especially when we can bring our own liquid refreshment. For more information on the above, or for the Talbot in general, please contact the office on 01656 749754, 07792 089394, email Talbotcc@tiscali.co.uk or visit our website www.talbotcc. co.uk Cheryl Butcher

The most distant object that can be seen with the unaided eye is the Andromeda Galaxy. It’s around 2.5 million light years away and surprisingly easy to spot if you know where to look. Begin by locating the ‘W’ described by the circumpolar constellation of Cassiopeia. Below you will see a great square of stars called Pegasus. The star at the top left of the square is Alpheratz and actually belongs to the constellation of Andromeda. Above it there is a line of stars pointing northwest, the second of which (Mirach) is quite obviously red in colour. Look a little distance above it and that fuzzy patch is the Andromeda Galaxy. Binoculars will make it even easier to find! It was once thought that Andromeda and our own Milky Way galaxy were twins, both being spiral galaxies and similar in size. But recent research shows that the Andromeda Galaxy is twice as big as our own, and contains a trillion stars. The galaxies are the largest members of the Local Group of around 54 (mostly dwarf) galaxies and the Local Group is itself an outpost of the Virgo Supercluster of many thousands of galaxies. FEATURES Model Exhibition In Porthcawl

Life With Porthcawl Lions

The Tenth Annual Model Exhibition was held at Trinity Church, Porthcawl on 9th August. The event had its beginning in 2003 when Teifion Humphreys, a life-long model railway enthusiast and a retired Minister at the Church, took his layout to the Lorelie Hotel. The men of the church enjoyed their evening playing trains so much and that, the following year, the first exhibition was held. Over the years it has grown, with many and various models being exhibited; it is always good to see so many people, young and old, appreciating the skill of the model makers and re-living their childhood. Recognition is given for the best exhibit in the show and, this year, Revd. John Hanson was awarded The Teifion Humphreys Trophy for his tremendous skill in aluminium boat building. A great debt of gratitude is owed to Alan Jenkins of MIB Models, Newton, for picking up the baton of the organisation of the event on Teifion’s death seven years ago, as well as to the exhibitors and the people of Porthcawl for their support. The money raised by the event will enable Trinity Church to serve its community in the coming year. Jean Humphreys

The Vintage Fair, held together with the Classic Car Club, at Porthcawl Rugby Club was a successful day, despite an early shower meaning an early finish. However, the choir were still able to perform even if it had to be in the bar. The cars were also a great attraction, as well as a trip down memory lane for a lot of visitors! Many thanks to the rugby club for hosting the event and for being so helpful. Beautiful weather meant a good response to the sandcastle competition with some pretty impressive results. Well done to all the boys and girls (and big boys and girls!) who took part. Unfortunately the weather was far from kind for the Bob Cooke games making it a complete wash-out and disappointing many eager would-be competitors who will now, doubtless, be looking forward to next year. An important change to the twice monthly Porthcawl Lions meetings: they are now held on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at the Hi-Tide, Mackworth Road, starting at 8pm. If you are interested in learning more about the life and work of the club do come along to one of the meetings or phone Don on 01656 788583. Men and women of all ages from 18 to over 80 can be sure of a warm welcome. John Cosson

Y Cefn Gwyrdd Good and bad, success and failure, optimism and pessimism... what’s that got to do with Y Cefn Gwyrdd, I hear you say? Well it describes perfectly the way in which the last month has panned out in Cefn Cribwr. The history wall at the top of Bedford Road is now nearing completion and looks superb thanks to the stone working and building skills of two excellent stonemasons. The wall commemorates the industrialists associated with Cefn’s industrial past, workplaces and the railway development of the northern valley. Soon, panels will further explain the significance of these. Square Mile Artists at the Box proved a great success with over 70 visitors sampling teas and cream cakes but atrocious conditions a week later spoilt attendance at the excellent Silures Art group. However the negative side of the month came in the form of a professional break-in at the Signal Box resulting in the devastating loss of over half of our exhibition...train lamps, GWR lanterns, a GWR clock, brass paraffin lamp, our DVD player and monitor, all of which have been donated by villagers or friends over a period of thirty years! Disheartened but still positive...onwards and upwards! John Mason Seaside News | 26

FEATURES Make A Difference To Someone’s Life

Porthcawl Museum

“My name is Vernon and I retired a few years ago having worked for 42 years and served in the RAF for 26 years. With this spare time after retirement I thought I could give something back as a volunteer. I heard about the Community Companions project from a friend and contacted BAVO to find out more. It sounded like something I’d enjoy so I decided to give it a go. Having completed all my training, I have started befriending a gentleman called Norman who is a retired deputy head teacher and served in 4 Commando during the Second World War. With our military backgrounds we already had a lot in common and after a few visits developed a really good friendship. Being a volunteer gives me great satisfaction. There are a lot of people out there that need support and it’s great to know that what I do makes a difference.” If you are interested in making a difference to someone’s life, contact Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO) Tel: 01656 810400 or Email: bavo@bavo.org.uk Jane Savile - BAVO

War declared, and forces of both sides ready to face each other - nothing to worry about ‘it will all be over by Christmas’. The British Expeditionary Force arrives in France in good spirits, but the German army pushes forward through Belgium and Luxembourg, and threatens the Channel ports. The BEF is rushed into action, but a series of setbacks cause the French army to fall back, and on 21st-23rd August are defeated at Charleroi. A withdrawal of French and British troops follow their action at Mons a day or two later. Then towards the end of August after the battle at Le Cateau the BEF is again forced to withdraw. At home Kitchener appeals for an army of 100,000 men to be formed quickly. The famous poster is issued showing Kitchener pointing out, saying ‘Your country needs you’. Men answer the appeal, thousands flock to enlist. At home in Porthcawl the August weather was showery, and visitors were not expected in any number at all. The reservists had been recalled to their units. Tools For Africa As the NATO Summit comes to Newport this month, Tools for Self Reliance remind us of an issued statement made to the Copenhagen World Summit as early as 1992 to ask “how can noble aims be achieved so long as basic hand tools are not accessible to the majority of working people in the developing world?” This is our work and we are still at it! Consequently we were delighted to receive a very encouraging visit to the workshop of our MP Madeleine Moon last month. Sadly our last shipment of crates had already left for Tanzania, but our MP was well aware of the aims of our group, the hard work that was involved and the care and consideration given by TFSR to the kit requirements, allocations and destination of the renovated tools. Thank you for all tools donated to our workshop or at “Sussed” Shop in James Street. We can also collect. Volunteers are always welcome. Workshops are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. We start again after our summer recess on Tuesday 9th September. For information contact John at 786367 or please view the charity website www.tfsr.org John Hanson (Tools for Self Reliance)

Through Christian Eyes Hi all, well what a summer we have had. Hope it has been good for you. Here are some things I have been thinking about recently. Although there were some things going on in my life beforehand (which could not have been coincidental) I think my first real encounter/experience with God was about 11 years ago. I was in a very sensitive place in my life and feeling quite desperate for answers. As I searched I heard a voice telling me that I/things could change if I opened my heart. The voice claimed to be Jesus. I believe it was. I have changed. In the experience I also felt burdened that I not valued the gift of life God had given me. I really felt as if I had ruined any connection with the God who had created me. I repented of my life without God and asked him in. I have never felt so at peace in all my life. Even in the tough times. Every now and then I am reminded of how wonderful God has been to me - and it all started the moment I connected with him. Neil Harvey

1st Nottage Beaver Scout Colony What an exciting year! Nottage Beavers have busily worked towards gaining many badges and challenges, culminating in seven of the group achieving their Bronze Baden Powell Award as they head off to their new Cub group in September. During the autumn, we have been on nature walks, experienced den building, visited the fire station and even met a police dog! We have seen Horrible Science in the Theatre, experienced a climbing wall, participated in the National Garden Bird Watch project and had a visit from the Wildlife Trust with a talk about real beavers accompanied by a real stuffed beaver! Our Beavers were also able to taste nettle soup and make a hut at Bryngarw Park with their WW1 exhibition. This summer we have had cricket training, been to Beaver Camp, had water fights and a barbeque and been bell boating, to name but a few of our activities. We must thank our team of supportive parents, without whose support and assistance this year would not have been such a success. We look forward to many more adventures in September! WI & GUILD Porthcawl Townswomen’s Guild News

Porthcawl WI News

We held no meeting in August but our usual activities have continued - craft, literary, walking groups and the ever popular luncheon club. Our big news since my last report was winning 2nd prize for the “Votes For Women” float in the Carnival. Thanks to Ceri Joseph of the Museum Society for organising it. What fun we had - rather hoarse next day from singing and shouting “Votes for Women” but well worth it! Also again with Ceri, taking part in the Suffrage March down John Street. We were proud to play a part in Porthcawl’s commemoration of the start of WW1. We have also enjoyed a visit to Kentchurch House and Gardens and held a successful coffee morning in aid of the Mayor’s Civic Fund. We next meet on Wednesday 10th September at All Saints Church Hall at 2pm when Ms. Rhiannon Gamble will be telling us about Dyffryn House and Gardens. Do come and join a lively group! Dorothy Thomas

At our last meeting Ceri Joseph from the Historical Society came and gave us an excellent talk all about the Suffragette movement. It really was a very interesting afternoon and our members learnt quite a lot of information from her. This all tied in with the hundred years since the First World War, as well as our afternoon tea event which also had a World War 1 theme to it. Perhaps many people will not have realised this but the first WI was founded in Wales, in Llanfair PG in September 1915. This idea was brought over from Canada, and thanks to the Marquis and Marchioness of Anglesey, we have WIs all round the country today. Mynydd Cynffig WI News Tuesday 12th August saw Mynydd Cynffig WI off on our summer trip. This year we picked Tenby and set off at about 9.30am arriving there just after 11am. We were lucky with the weather and the small shower we had didn’t dampen our spirits. Tenby always gives a great day for visitors, plenty of shops, place to eat and have coffee; the harbour is a delight with its boats and brightly painted houses. We all agreed that the day had been a great success. We left about 4.30pm and due to traffic got home about 6.30pm. Tired but having had a good day. Our next WI meeting is on 9th September. Autumn will be just around the corner but we have had a good summer and our Christmas outing to Abbey Cwmhir to look forward to. The speaker in September is Don Llewellyn, topic ‘a life behind the camera’. Perhaps we can get some tips for our own picture taking. Looking forward to meeting all the members in September and hearing about their summer holidays. Call in and tell us about your holidays. Christine Callaghan

Finance Beware Of “Free” Pension Advice

University Mortgage Scheme

You may have read in one of my previous articles or heard in the news recently that from April 2015 pension rules will be changing to allow greater flexibility in how you are able to take benefits from your pension arrangements. For many this is welcome news; however the changes will provide an opportunity for the unscrupulous to scam hardworking people out of their life savings. The City watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has already identified a number of organisations involved in less than honest activity and advise that if you are called out of the blue by anyone offering a “free pension review” or “guaranteed better returns” to take particular care as such approaches may be designed to trick you into putting your cash into high-risk investments that will almost certainly leave you out of pocket. Tracey McDermott, Director of Enforcement and Financial Crime at the Financial Conduct Authority, said: “Most of the companies offering this ‘service’ are not authorised, and we are concerned that the reviews often end with pension pots being placed in unregulated investments.” Investing in overseas property developments, forestry or “storage pods” with your pension funds can be extremely high risk, as those who were “advised” to invest in Spanish or Bulgarian developments before the market collapsed are able to testify. Returns can be unreliable, the investments can be difficult to sell and you could lose everything you have invested, significantly reducing how much you will have to live on in retirement. Our advice would therefore be to only seek pension advice from an Independent Financial Advisory firm which is regulated by the FCA. Congratulations to Mr Delwyn Eatwell of One Life Financial Planning Ltd who recently achieved Chartered Financial Planner status.

At the time of writing, we’ve just seen thousands of anxious school-leavers sweating on their A-level results, hoping for the university place of their choice. Whilst this represents a new chapter in their young lives, it also brings with it the issue of ‘where do they live?’ Some students are lucky enough to be in halls of residence on campus, others are not. Many do not wish to be in halls, preferring the experience of being out there, house sharing or having their own place. That’s where we can assist. A well-known UK building society has, just a few days ago, launched a superb new university mortgage scheme, whereby the parents can purchase the property (say a 3 bed house) for their son or daughter to reside in, near the university, on a ‘buyto-let’-type mortgage basis. Many parents have actually taken this clever path historically, on the occasions when such schemes have been available and the advantages are obvious, including: (i) the parents have a rental property as an investment, (ii) the spare bedrooms are rented out to other students to help pay the mortgage (iii) the son or daughter does not have to pay rent to someone else and (iv) the son or daughter, once their studies are completed, have a home to live in, should they secure a job in the area. If they do not wish to remain in that area, the property can be sold, at a profit (should house prices rise) and the equity returned to the parents. At Cambria Financial, we can assist interested parents in pursuing this tremendous opportunity and we would encourage you to call as soon as possible, to ensure you get a head start. Call us on 01656 782545 and we’ll gladly put the wheels in motion, with a specialist mortgage adviser visiting you at a convenient time (evenings and weekends included), to discuss the options with you.

Garden Cefn Cribwr Gardening Club

Bird Watch: Nuthatch

September is a cooler gustier month than August (let’s hope not too cool and gusty) and the nights are getting shorter – here comes winter! Again there is not much to do in the flower garden but enough to keep you busy. Split perennials, you can always find a willing recipient for one half if you haven’t room. Sedums love being split and thrive, whereas peonies resent it and don’t (there’s nothing worse than a sulking peony!) Collect seeds from your favourite plants for next summer’s colour, plant spring flowering bulbs (next month for tulips though). Why not pot up some hyacinths and narcissi ready for Christmas making the most of the warm weather while you can? In the veg patch dig up the last of the spuds before the slugs make a meal of them, lift and pot up strawberry runners and sow winter onion sets, harvesting time for all your summer crops – lovely! Did you know - the world’s largest garden centre is in (no not America!) Cheshire. The Bridgemore Garden World has over 25 acres and sells more than 3 million plants a year – wow! Only gardeners can find delight in the rain – even after 10 days non-stop! Chris Early

The Nuthatch is instantly recognisable. This small, plump, and woodpecker-like bird is a steel-blue grey colour on top and reddish-buff (almost brick-red in males) below, with a white chin and dark dagger-like bill. The distinctive black eye-stripe always reminds me of a masked bandit, a fitting description given its habit of flying off with food to cache elsewhere! The

Nuthatch descends trees head first and is the only British bird that can do so; this posture is adopted on peanut feeders too. Pairs of Nuthatches defend their territories throughout the year, a survival strategy that gives them an excellent knowledge of the food available in the area and where it has been stored. Since the mid-1970s populations have rapidly increased. Their presence in gardens tends to be higher when there is a poor beech mast crop. Laleston Gardening Club As the summer continues it’s still a busy time watering, picking, pruning and dead heading and enjoying your garden or vegetable plot. Things have continued at a busy pace at Cliff Cottage resulting in the door and sash windows being painted, thanks go to David, Dennis and Ron. By the time you read this our Annual Horticultural & Vegetable Show will have been so here’s hoping for some nice weather for the day. We will have also seen the last trip/outing taking place to Wyncliffe Court, thanks again to Margaret for organising the trips. Patrick has been busy compiling the lecture programme for 2015, so watch this space for further news. On a sad note one of long standing members Betty Jones passed away on 12th July 2014. There was a strong representation from the Gardening Club; our thoughts are with her family at this sad time. Don’t forget the club shop is open on Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am until 12 noon - give us a try first for your gardening needs. The nights are starting to draw in a little now, until next time enjoy your gardening! Simon J Nelson

DJM SOLICITORS BECOME A MEMBER OF CERTAINTY – THE NATIONAL WILL REGISTER DJM Solicitors are proud to announce that we have become a member of Certainty, the National Will Register. What is the National Will Register? As the name suggests, the register is a database where anyone can register the location of the Solicitor who holds their Will. No further details are registered so that your confidential information never becomes accessible to the public or anyone searching the register. The Register was created by ‘Certainty’ following considerable investment. Why Register your Will with Certainty? 575,000 people die in the UK each year, and two thirds of adults do not have Wills. However, for those people who have taken the wise step to create a Will, it may not always be found. A Survey carried out by Certainty revealed the following facts:• 67% of people do not know where to find their parents Wills. • 98% of Solicitors hold Wills at their office where the person has died and the Will has not been administered. • Over 300,000 people die every year intestate where a Will either cannot be found or was presumed never written. • 77% of the public were in favour of a voluntary Wills register. What Happens If I Don’t Register? • Your beneficiaries may not receive inheritance in accordance with your instructions. • Your Will may be found after your estate has been distributed. • The Courts distribute your assets under the rules of Intestacy. • You beneficiaries are financially penalised. • An old Will may be discovered and deemed as your final wishes. • Family disputes can occur. • Your children and dependants may not be looked after in the way you have stated in your Will. • It may be assumed that you never wrote a Will. At DJM we have decided that it is in the interests of all our clients to make the financial commitment and join Certainty. So if you have a Will and would like to register it then please contact us. Similarly if you are an Executor of a Will then we recommend that you ask the person appointing you to register their Will to avoid any difficulties for you in the future. Finally, the Register also enables us to carry out a Will search on your behalf – not just against the Register itself, but also against other Solicitors in the country. If you have therefore lost a loved one and are not certain whether they have left a Will, or if the Will you have is the most up to date version, then please contact us for assistance.

Health Mindfulness

Food Concerns

Mindfulness is a big movement here in the UK: recent discussions in parliament and the rolling out of secular programs across education, health and criminal justice. It won’t be that long before local Bridgend schools are teaching children mindfulness skills. As with all new movements, there are teething problems. Who is qualified? Who isn’t? That word ‘mindfulness’ replaces ‘meditation’. The internet and particularly Facebook has allowed many groups to form, and yes they are jumping on the bandwagon. How do you know that you’re getting the real and more importantly safe aspect of practice? Here are a couple of guidelines to look for. Is this teacher’s meditation history available, verifiable and publically open? Who taught this teacher? Does this teacher have a lineage of teachers? Does this teacher have recognised qualifications? Does this teacher have a referral pathway when other presenting issues surface? For example, if a meditator begins to experience flashbacks or past trauma is there a pathway for such issues? A recognised psychotherapist will be part of the teacher’s support network. What does a mindfulness qualification look like? For more information on this subject, join our Facebook page: Bridgend Meditation Community. Neville Evans

One of the greatest concerns with the food supply today is the toxicity and lack of nutrients. This begins with the seed, then the soil it is planted in, followed by the treatment it receives during its growth phase but if that wasn’t enough, a further degradation of food takes place between the harvest and the plate. The most commonly eaten and most processed food category is arguably the grains. They often undergo a process that leaves them with a fraction of the nutritional value than when they were initially harvested in order to produce many types of flour products. To begin this process, the highly nutritious, sprout-able bran and the husk that has the fibre are removed leaving only the light yellow endosperm, which is virtually all starch with very little nutritional value and a high glycemic index rating. Following that, in order to bypass the ageing process and add shelf life, as well as keep the clean white colour, the endosperm is crushed and treated with chlorides to make it instantly white. A by-product of that process is alloxan, which is used to induce diabetes in lab animals for medical testing. What is left is a food that has a mere remnant of its original nutrient value. Another way the nutrients in food are destroyed is through heating. Microwaving is the worst way to cook food because it excites the water molecules inside whatever you are cooking, causing heat to be formed from the inside out. This results in a cell-by-cell nuking of the food causing near-total molecular decomposition of the vitamins and phytonutrients. This leaves microwaved food almost completely dead, leaving nothing but empty calories, fibre, and minerals. Virtually every vitamin and phytonutrient content has been destroyed. POEMS Hands

The Old School

Our Surgery

You use your hands for many tasks, Throughout your own lifetime, You can use your hands for gestures, Or to assist some people in sign.

I went along the other day to see a school once mine To wander through its halls and rooms remembering the time When laughter filled the air around and noise was everywhere A place full up right to the brim of warmth and loving care And as I turned into the drive to walk into my past I caught a glimpse of rugby fields’ big trees with shadows cast When I was young they were but shrubs and now they stand too tall Has so much time gone by the way since we all graced these halls The pristine blocks and changing rooms were all but memories The pool was gone and in its place some bricks and cut up trees But as I walked the memories came flooding back in like rain Remembering the names of teachers calling out my name Taken back to sports days, cricket matches, rugby games And in the corner of the field the old pavilion wanes Once watching over matches in the lazy summer sun Exciting mellow afternoons, we didn’t care who won The school now closed and empty, the children moved away The rust upon the buildings shows how hard she fought to stay But time will always catch us and change will sweep away That place we all remember in that far of distant day I hope someone takes pity and leaves some trace of past Perhaps the old pavilion in the corner might just last But even if the diggers sweep away and build a new A hundred ghosts may wander through the fields that once we knew

Many people complain about their doctors’ surgeries They grumble and groan and voice their displease. But I consider myself lucky with the surgery I’m at North Cornelly Surgery I’ve never seen that.

Dean Smith Attended St. Johns 1981-1993 and will miss its hallowed halls.

Pauline Lewis

You use your hands to touch, And to caress the ones you love, You use your hands together to pray, For your loved ones up above. You use your hands to carry for others, So they can go that extra mile, Or to touch a person’s upset face, And help them just to smile. You use your hands in darkness, For the right direction to feel, You use your hands to massage, And you can spiritually heal. You use your hands to press the buttons, And turn on and off switches, You use your hands to rub your body, And scratch it when it itches. You use your hands to eat your food, And to help set the table, Unfortunately we don’t all have hands, So consider those who are disabled. Written by David Boyce Brackla , Bridgend

To A Fish Do pardon my whimsy, But how I so wish That I’d only worry As much as the fish: Artlessly darting, Waggling beneath waves, Sleeping open-eyed, Escaping unscathed. Needing no friends to keep, And no cherry to lose. No tears to weep, No path to choose. Such solace it’d be To harmonise with the crowd; To not be excluded As something too loud. To swim, and belong, Yet not left astray. To be one with a thousand. May we all lead the way. Sam Pryce, Porthcawl Seaside News | 40

The doctors are thorough but show that they care, kindness and patience that’s nowadays rare, Receptionists often get a rough deal but the ones that I see are helpful and real. So I think that’s it’s fair to give praise where it’s due and consider ourselves some of the lucky few, so I know it’s not much but thank you from me, for looking after me and my family. Prayer For A New Home Lord, help me weave a web of prayer To wrap around this brand new house Garment so fine will let the sunshine in But keep all darkness out A web to bind your children close to you As they share new life together So e’en though winter winds may shrill they’ll know Naught from your love may sever A web to spin a carpet fine That Christ himself may walk within A welcome guest in every nook And always Lord and King

Porthcawl Family expand Digital Copy Centres into town…

“We have made a substantial investment in the latest state of the art digital printing equipment and digital photo labs to ensure we provide the best quality possible to our clients. We will also be offering a fully creative design for print service for individuals & local businesses including web and social media management”

The Print Centre Group will open a branch of their successful Copy Centre chain in Porthcawl early in September. Mark, Alison and son Chris have operated Independent Design, Copy and Photographic stores in Cardiff since 2003, operating from two City Centre locations delivering high quality design and print services to both general public and commercial clients. The business supplies many blue chip clients including Cardiff University, John Lewis, Boots, Hamleys, Go Compare and The Welsh Government. The Print Centre brand is well respected in the Cardiff area and a structured expansion plan is underway to increase its number of stores in the South Wales area. With over 28 years’ experience in the Printing Industry Mark has always had a passion one day to open a store in his home town. The Print Centre has been a keen supporter of local charities including the junior section of Porthcawl RFC for many years, and will continue to do so. They have seen an increase in work from new clients from the area recently so now seems to be the right time to open up.

Following extensive refurbishment to the store in Lias Road, Print Centre Porthcawl will open its doors in early September. The store will carry the Kodak Express brand which in its own right ensures that the quality that is offered is second to none. A full range of photographic services will be available from instant prints, passport & ID, through to high volume photo reproduction. Some of the other services offered apart from standard digital printing, copying and book binding will include promotional personalised gifts and garment printing, large format and signage. There will even be some special services including canvas printing and even caricature design! We have opening offers including 6 free prints if you download our Kodak Moments App in store… Mark, Alison and Chris extend a warm welcome to everyone to call in and see what’s available, you will be amazed at some of the things we can do…

I really enjoy the Liz Carlyle series, and Close Call is the latest instalment from the former head of MI5. Liz Carlyle and her Counter Terrorism unit in MI5 are hunting the international under-the-counter arms trade. With the Arabic region in a volatile state, British Intelligence is concerned that extremist Al-Qaeda are building their power base ready to launch another attack. As the pressure mounts, Liz and her team must intercept illegal weapons before they get into the wrong hands. When MI5 learns that the source of the arms deals is located in Western Europe, Liz is on a search that leads her to Paris, Berlin and Manchester.

Arts The Acoustic Club At The Grand Pavilion

Porthcawl Male Choir

After a great spring/summer programme, featuring Lindyhopping Jelly Roll Jones, Amy Wadge, The Parcel of Rogues, and Woody Mann, to name but a few, we return on 11th September with Shootin the Crow and Blind River Scare. Both have played at the Acoustic Club before and we look forward to their return on a double bill, playing Americana, Alt Country and Folk, a mixture of well known and original material. Doors open 7.30 pm for 8pm start. For further information and tickets please contact the box office on 01656 815995. Look forward to seeing you there. Lin Williams

The choir’s much respected and popular President and founder member, Glan Davies recently passed away. He will be greatly missed, not only by us, but also by the many other organisations for which he worked for and tirelessly supported. This respect was apparent by the large number of friends and colleagues attending his funeral. Each year Porthcawl Male Choir and Port Talbot’s Cymric Choir join together to perform a concert in aid of LATCH, the charity that supports the families of children suffering from cancer. This year the concert took place in Port Talbot’s St Agnes Church and, despite an extremely warm evening, it was, as ever, well supported. The choirs were conducted by Mair Jones who is the Musical Director for both and were accompanied by Matthew Lewis and Huw Smitham. Soloists were soprano Shoshana Pavett and clarinetist Jordan Lewis. Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Graham Jones. The choir is currently rehearsing for this year’s annual concert to be held in the Grand Pavilion on Saturday 4th October commencing at 7pm. We are fortunate in having as this year’s guest artist, Sophie Evans star of West End’s Wizard of Oz. John Williams PRO

Want To Learning The Art Of Handbell Ringing? Would you be interested in having a go at and learning the art of handbell ringing? It is an activity that all ages can participate in and have fun whilst doing it. An ability to read music is an advantage but not necessary as the music is marked up by colours. I run a local team of ringers based at St John’s church in Newton and have a large set of handbells that makes it possible to be able to play a wide range of music. We have played at various events and venues around the area in the last few years and are now about to start practicing carols for Christmas. We will be giving performances leading up to Christmas at various venues around town. We also try to be available for other requests to play throughout the year. So, if you would like to come along and have a go please give Tim a call on 07749 254131 - we would love to see you. Tim Tilt

A Film Maker’s Point of View Being out and about with my Arriflex 16mm movie camera at the moment, shooting “Discovering Nottage”, makes me think how increasingly unusual it is to be producing a documentary on film as opposed to digital. Soon, young film makers will hardly recognise a true movie camera as they are being brought up to use modern electronic gadgets, so, at the risk of repeating myself, let me explain my raison d’etre. Traditional film-making uses a roll of celluloid coated with a lightsensitive emulsion which reacts chemically when exposed to light, and the emulsion is made up of millions of tiny grains, none of which is exactly the same as any other. After processing, this gives the image the characteristic of being “alive”, due to the organic nature of the medium. Colours can be reproduced as a subtle range of tones, blending into one another. By contrast, the digital image is made up of fixed pixels, millions of them, but they are all the same, unlike film grain, and this produces a “dead” image – to me, at any rate. I have been a film cameraman for over 25 years, and I have no desire to join the digital revolution, at least for filming purposes, because I believe it is simply a step in the wrong direction. I wonder how many other people think the same way. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Film Productions Picture: Arriflex 16SR film camera Seaside News | 44

Arts Stag’s World Of Rock Hi gang, did check out new covers band but it was as exciting as a cemetery with lights! If they played on my lawn I’d close the curtains and watch paint dry! On a plus note, my old mate Jay Aston is home by the time you read this. Jay found fame in the 1980s in “Gene Loves Jezebel” and was very successful in the U.S.A. before splitting up. He’s now back writing, and has been touring America and recently played the European festival circuit where “Gene Loves Jezebel” headlined the “Week of the Sea” Festival. Also, his new side project “Ugly Buggs” has a new single out called “Summertime”. Will keep you up to speed on Jay next month. Glad to see original bands are still coming through so check out Nantymoel’s “Zephyr Reign” whose bassist Mojo I met a few months ago (thanks for the pint!) “The Blims” from Bridgend, Jayce Lewis from Kenfig Hill and new grunge punk outfit “Stabby with Knives” featuring former “Jeff Killed John”/”Bullet for my Valentine” bassist Nicki Crandle who lives in Rest Bay, Porthcawl and is a regular visitor to my flat “The Stag and Sounds”! Make sure you check all the acts I’ve plugged on their websites and keep your calls and text messages coming. Stag Marks 07979 971127 Photo: Jay Aston from “Gene Loves Jezebel”

Our new season starts 4th September with an enrolment night. Throughout the summer “closed period” we still met every week for our Thursday evening field trips, which were great fun, particularly the evening we went to Kenfig Pool, which was full of laughs and some great images. We also held our annual exhibition in the Grand Pavilion in August, which was very successful. Our programme is available at www.pyle-porthcawl-ps.co.uk or contact Glyn Edmunds for more information. We welcome new members of all ages and skill levels, so if you have an interest in photography, come and join us on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm in the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel. Art In Focus As part of the national commemorations of the centenary of the First World War, the National Museum of Wales is hosting a series of exhibitions to explore the impact the Great War had on life in Wales and its people. Efforts and Ideals: Prints of the First World War contains 66 lithographs that were originally commissioned by the British Government in 1917. The aim was to generate public and financial support after suffering three years of hard fighting and unprecedented loss of life, as well as increasing hardship at home. The ‘Efforts’ portfolio illustrates some of the day-to-day activities of the war effort, including the important role women played. ‘Ideals’ expresses the aims and ambitions of the war through use of allegory and symbolism. As images of propaganda, they purposely avoided showing the horrors and atrocities of war, as was typical of the work of the official war artists. It was the most ambitious print project of the First World War and this is the first time that this series has been displayed in its entirety since 1920. They are on show until 7th January 2015. Daily Art Tours: 12:30pm free to the public. Josephine Lewington MA. Seaside News | 46

Rest Bay SLSA Welsh Nipper Champs! On the 10th of August, Rest Bay Nippers were crowned Champions at the Welsh Nipper Championships at Aberavon. The sea events were held on the Saturday and in difficult sea conditions, the courage and determination shown by all of the nippers from all clubs was outstanding. Rest Bay had some great results in the individual events and performed superbly in the team relays, taplin and sea rescue events. Sunday was all about the beach and once again Rest Bay Nippers produced some outstanding individual results in the beach flags, long run and sprint. Not even torrential rain half way through proceedings could dull the enthusiasm of the nippers many of whom were soaked right through by this point. The final event of the day was the sprint relay and only a couple of points separated the top 2 clubs. Silver for the boys and gold for the girls meant that Rest Bay came out on top and had won the championship to go with the Welsh Stillwater Championship they won at the start of the season. A massive well done to all nippers, coaches, parents and organisers from all clubs for what was a brilliant weekend of surf lifesaving. Chris Howells Rest Bay Nipper Coach

Southerndown & Ogmore Surf Report Hurricane Bertha fizzled out, out West into the Atlantic and limped up the Channel as a weak low spreading rain and strong stormy skies as she swept. We had some onshore windy surf off her of about 3ft but very lumpy and poor. A slick of purple brown water spews out of the Ogmore Estuary after such heavy downpours of rain brought by storms. All the visual glory of clear emerald green water is ruined as the silt and mud spews into the sea and spreads along our coastline with the tides - taking away the summer feel to the water. As I write, it’s mid August now. We have lost the blazing weather for now and hope we get some more in before October takes over. Let’s hope we get a proper hurricane swell or two this summer.
